This will ensure you receive quality care and support in case of any medical emergencies or other issues abroad. Check out our best travel insurance companion – SafetyWing .

10 Reasons to Make Abu Dhabi Your Next Travel Destination

iStock-497249264 (1).jpg

Stretching from the Arabian Gulf coast to the heritage heartland of Al Ain and the magnificent desert landscape of the Al Dhafra Region, Abu Dhabi comprises 80 percent of the United Arab Emirates. Between its natural islands and luxury resorts, shifting sand dunes and cool oases, the emirate holds something for every traveler. What's more, the city of Abu Dhabi , located just an hour and 20 minute drive from Dubai, was recently named the safest city in the world by Numbeo's Safe City Index. One day you could be touring world-class museums; the next, watching falcons hunting in the desert. Here are ten reasons why you need to make Abu Dhabi your next travel destination.

1) Visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Built in honor of the UAE's founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a true reflection of Arabian splendor. With the capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshippers, it is the largest mosque in the UAE and one of the largest in the world. 82 domes and more than 1,000 columns adorn the structure, and reflective pools amplify its beauty. Inside the main prayer hall hangs the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet and one of the world’s largest chandeliers, weighing in a twelve tons. As the sun sets, a unique lighting system reflecting the phases of the moon transforms the mosque’s white and gold accents. It's no wonder Sheikh Zayed Mosque was voted the world’s second most popular landmark attraction in TripAdvisor’s 2017 Travelers' Choice Awards.

2) See the brand new Louvre Abu Dhabi in Abu Dhabi’s cultural district

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Opened November 11 on Saadiyat Island , the Louvre Abu Dhabi is the Arab World’s first universal museum. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, its layout resembles an Arab medina, and the dome casts an enchanting ‘rain of light’ inspired by the shadows of overlapping palm trees in the UAE’s oases. Spanning from ancient times to present day, the collection will celebrate cultural exchange and diversity.

Set to open next on Saadiyat Island is Zayed National Museum, conveying the story of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the unification of the UAE, followed by the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Displaying art from the 1960s to present, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be a preeminent platform for contemporary art and culture.

3) Enjoy five-star luxury on a private marina

Abu Dhabi Palace

An Abu Dhabi icon, the 114-dome Emirates Palace  spans over half a mile from wing to wing and amazes visitors with its opulence. During the day, the hotel’s golden-sandy color stands in contrast with its lush green gardens, silvery water fountains and the blue sky above. By night, the hotel’s lighting changes, featuring a rainbow effect over the central dome. Inside the main palace building, gold, pearl and opal designs abound, and more than 1,000 chandeliers hang from the ceiling. Especially memorable are the two handmade wall display carpets portraying the palace and each weighing a ton.

4) See the UAE’s national bird up close

Abu Dhabi Falcon Rescue

Originating with the Bedouin tribes, falconry remains an important part of UAE culture, and the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is one of the best places to observe these legendary birds. The world’s largest and most advanced falcon hospital, it also features a museum and space where the birds fly free. On your guided tour, visit the wards where the birds are kept, gain insight into the desert sport of falconry, and try your hand at the pursuit in the facility's gardens.

5) Experience what it’s like to be a racecar driver

Abu Dhabi - Race Cars

Experience the thrill of driving on a racetrack in the car of your dreams. At the Yas Marina Circuit , one of the world’s most advanced Formula 1® circuits, Yas Racing offers a number of day track experiences to suit all tastes. Test the limits of your own car during Track Day, or hop in to a race-worthy Mercedes or Formula Yas 3000. Coaches are on hand to help you reach heart-racing speeds, whether you opt for the driver or passenger seat. You can even register for a racing license course.

6) Discover an historic oasis city

Abu Dhabi Oasis

One of the world’s oldest permanently inhabited settlements, Al Ain is a Unesco World Heritage city. Encompassing seven oases, the city also abounds with picturesque forts. Erected in 1891 to defend the city and protect precious palm groves, Al Jahili Fort is one of the UAE’s most historic and features a stunning collection of photographs by British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger from his 1940s crossings of the Rub Al Khali desert.  The redeveloped Al Qattara Fort is another must-see. Now home to an arts center and gallery, it offers hundreds of modern exhibits as well as workshops ranging from pottery to painting, music and calligraphy.

7) Spend a night amid the dunes

Abu Dhabi Camel Ride

For some of Abu Dhabi’s most incredible and dramatic scenery, head inland to Al Dhafra Region . Set in the middle of the Rub al Khali, the largest uninterrupted sand mass in the world, Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is the ideal place from which to explore this landscape. The hotel’s desert experiences include dune dawn walks, camel trekking, campfire barbecues and heart-pounding dune drives known as "dune bashing."

8) Take a wildlife safari on Sir Bani Yas Island

Abu Dhabi Safari

Spanning more than half of Sir Bani Yas Island , the Arabian Wildlife Park is home to more than 10,000 free roaming animals. Spot giraffes at eye-level from the viewing platform, or head deeper into the park on a wildlife drive. Guests of the boutique Desert Islands Resort and Spa by Antara can take 4X4 Nature & Wildlife Drives of the park in specially made vehicles, and Danat Resort Jebel Dhanna offers a three-hour tour. Arabian oryx, gazelles, hyenas and cheetahs are just some of the species you’re bound to see.

9) Enjoy Arabian hospitality and traditions

Abu Dhabi Culture

In Abu Dhabi, hospitality is a lifestyle. The warmth of welcome and generosity that emerged from encountering travelers in the desert generations ago is very much a part of life today. From the serving of Arabic coffee and dates, to falconry, camel racing and Ayala folk dancing, or "stick dancing," Abu Dhabi’s culture is awash with fascinating  stories, crafts and traditions . Be sure to attend the annual  Qasr Al Hosn Festival  in February. Spanning ten days and taking place on the grounds of Qasr Al Hosn, the symbolic birthplace of Abu Dhabi, it celebrates the emirate's best traditions.

10) Visit the innovative Masdar City

Abu Dhabi - Masdar

Stroll through one of the world's most innovative cities, or take a tour  in a driverless vehicle. Masdar City broke ground in 2008 with the visionary goal of becoming the world's most sustainable city and a model for how urban centers  worldwide can dramatically reduce energy and water usage.  At the city's center lies  the  Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, a research university dedicated to ground-breaking research in the fields of renewable energy and sustainability. Cutting-edge companies dedicated to the same goals can tap into university resources to help bring much needed sustainability solutions to life. The city is still being built, with new businesses and facilities being added every day, making this an exciting time to visit and gaze into the future.

Visiting Abu Dhabi: What to Know Before You Go

By Jenna Scatena

Abu Dhabi

Every foreign destination has its nuances: There are local customs to be mindful of, etiquette to abide by, and regional laws to follow. Some are intuitive or common knowledge, while others aren't. Being a respectful and responsible traveler means reading up on how to navigate the local culture and regulations, so we’ve compiled a few extra tips to ensure a smooth trip to Abu Dhabi .

This Emirati region has been drawing more and more visitors with its dynamic mix of cultural offerings , from historic to modern; its expansive dining options ; and its unique desert attractions. As one of the safest cities in the world, it’s a huge draw for families. So pay attention to these tips (and note the government's website has additional information ), because when you’re in this great of a destination , we don’t want you to miss a thing.

Emiratis are conservative dressers, often donning traditional attire. But don’t worry: you aren’t expected to sport an abaya or a kandura. Instead, expect to dress modestly, especially in conservative areas and public spaces like shopping malls and parks. We suggest loose-fitting clothes that cover shoulders and knees for both men and women. Consider a higher neckline, and avoid form-fitting or transparent clothes. You can sport swimwear at designated places like hotel pools and beaches. When visiting a mosque, women are required to wear an abaya, which most mosques provide for free, including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque .

Photography

This one might be hard for modern globetrotters, especially Instagrammers and photographers. But taking photos—and posting them on social media sites—is a bit tricky here. Just because something is in a public space doesn't mean you can photograph it or post it. In a nutshell, avoid photographing anything that has to do with the government or people if you don't have their permission.

Taking photos of people in public without their clear and direct consent is considered a violation of personal privacy, and thus an offense. This particularly goes for taking photos of women, but applies to everyone. Even if someone is in the background, if they didn’t give you consent, they shouldn’t be identifiable. Note that taking photos of government buildings, military installations, and aircraft (commercial or government) is prohibited.

Drinking in public is illegal in Abu Dhabi, but hotels with legal permits are allowed to serve alcohol. While you can consume alcohol on these premises, it's illegal to be intoxicated in public, so you have to sober up before leaving. Read more in our Abu Dhabi drinking guide .

PDA is not appropriate—and there are plenty of signs posted around the city to remind you of this. Public decency and morality laws are taken seriously here. While it's tolerable for married couples to hold hands in public, kissing and hugging are considered an offense to publicly decency, and can lead to jail time.

10 Reasons to Travel to Abu Dhabi This Winter

The beautiful Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest in the UAE

Abu Dhabi , capital of the United Arab Emirates, is often overlooked for the Vegas-like decadence of neighboring Dubai . But that dynamic is shifting. Investments in culture set into motion a decade ago are now blossoming. Combined with an already impressive suite of architectural and design superlatives, a trove of natural treasures, and a contemporary population rooted in Bedouin traditions of hospitality, Abu Dhabi is more than just a one-day destination. Here are 10 reasons to go right now.

1. Winter temperatures are the most comfortable

After months of visible summer heat shimmering over the city streets, the regular 100-degree temperatures are cooling just enough for people to emerge from their air-conditioned cocoons, making winter the best time to experience all the city and its surroundings have to offer.

2. The events calendar kicks into gear

From concerts to sports and art to food, Abu Dhabi’s calendar starts filling up in November. The crown jewel is the weekend-long frenzy surrounding the Etihad Formula 1 Grand Prix where yacht parties reign, pop stars perform, and racecars whiz. And for an experience you won’t find anywhere else, attend the Al-Dhafra camel beauty pageant deep in the desert.

3. Now is an important time to learn about Islam

With divisive rhetoric over immigration and terrorism dominating headlines around Brexit and the U.S. presidential election, now is the time to learn about Islamic culture firsthand. Each experience and story shared helps shape a deeper, more personal narrative of an often-misunderstood religion and culture. Abu Dhabi, rooted in Islamic tradition but with eyes set firmly on the future, is a safe, contemporary Middle Eastern destination for an introduction to Islam and the Arab world.

4. Famous museums are opening outposts here

Abu Dhabi is spending billions to develop a trio of starchitect-designed museums as centerpieces for a new cultural district. The first is set to open in 2017 and it’s far from what you’d expect in the Middle East: the Louvre. Next up? The Guggenheim. Abu Dhabi has partnered with the most renowned museums in the world, a testament to the Emirates’ determination to become a global culture powerhouse. Get there now for the first look at this expansion of the local art scene.

5. It’s a surprisingly diverse city

With international residents making up 80% of the population , you’re just as likely to overhear conversations in Hindi, Farsi, Tagalog, English, or Chinese as you are in Arabic. Stroll along Abu Dhabi’s corniche, a popular landscaped promenade between the sparkling skyscrapers and sea, to get a snapshot of the city’s diverse daily life. Among other things, you’ll see women power-walking in traditional abayas , construction workers napping from shaping the city’s ever-evolving skyline, waiters balancing plates of hot coals to fuel shisha pipes in cafés, children playing with soccer balls, suits closing deals over cell phones, and expat families walking barefoot in the white sand and splashing in the turquoise waters.

6. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is exquisite

Whether you have an entire day or simply a spare hour on a layover, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a must-see. This majestic house of worship, made of pure white marble, seems to float like a cloud against the blue sky. Stroll barefoot around columns inlaid with intricate floral designs made from semi-precious stones, under the Swarovski crystal chandeliers, and over the largest handwoven carpet in the world. You’ll leave in awe.

7. There are more and more options to fly there in style

Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways has been busy adding new routes and opening new airport lounges around the world, making its luxurious flying experience even more seamless. In the spirit of Bedouin hospitality, Etihad pampers its guests with thoughtful touches and generous service no matter where they sit. From noise-canceling headphones in the elegantly designed economy seats to private butler service in the three-room “residence,” the flight alone is worth the trip.

8. You can easily explore the beauty of the desert

Discover Abu Dhabi’s desert landscape by foot, four-wheel drive, or camel. Be one of the first to wander 3,000 acres of date palm plantations in the newly opened Al Ain Oasis, part of the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the UAE. Enjoy dune-bashing over waves of sand. Drive to the top of Jebel Hafeet, the tallest peak in the emirate, and then explore the ancient dome-shaped tombs in the foothills below. After an active day, ride camels into the sunset and count shooting stars under a pristine night sky.

9. Abu Dhabi’s seafaring past is alive and well

For a glimpse of Abu Dhabi’s seafaring past, head to Dhow Harbour at dawn. Dhows—traditional long, narrow wooden sailing vessels—arrive with the day’s catch, which you can buy and then have gutted, spiced, and grilled to perfection at the adjacent fish market. Jump aboard a pearl diving tour where you’ll glide through protected mangroves while sipping local coffee, nibbling dates, and learning proper oyster shucking techniques. You get to keep the shiny bounty you discover.

10. You can buy gold from the souk . . . or a vending machine

Controlling the majority of the UAE’s oil reserves, Abu Dhabi is the wealthiest of the seven emirates and the signature souvenir to show off that superlative is gold: gold-flaked cappuccinos, gold-dusted camel burger buns, and an ATM machine dispensing gold bars are all available at the opulent Emirates Palace . Away from the hotel, shop for that special someone at the gold souk, where you can haggle for a deal on 18- to 24-karat jewelry and watches.

5 Reasons To Visit Abu Dhabi

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

A country of incredible contrasts; where towering skyscrapers stand beside centuries-old mosques, thrilling theme parks juxtapose laidback beaches, and both traditional Souks and modern malls delight the avid shopper. Abu Dhabi is a destination that travellers continue to visit time after time, and our Kenwood Travel Experts share their 5 reasons as to why you too should make the UAE’s capital your next holiday destination.

1. Rich Culture

From arts to architecture, customs to ceremonies, Abu Dhabi boasts a rich culture both old and new. One of the country’s most important heritage sites is the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque; a marble-domed masterpiece adorned with jewel-encrusted columns, gold-plated Swarovski chandeliers and one of the largest mosaic courtyards in the world.

For those looking to feed the creative soul, the Louvre Abu Dhabi houses some of the most outstanding galleries and exhibitions in the world. It’s also a fantastic place for children too, with crafty workshop classes and interactive displays to keep all the family entertained.

2. Incredible Hotels

Abu Dhabi’s skyscraper-studded skyline is the perfect showcase of its many incredible places to stay. From luxurious penthouses right in the heart of the city, to family-friendly resorts perched on the shores of Yas Island, the range of accommodation in Abu Dhabi is diverse, but the warm, Arabian hospitality is ever-present.

Kenwood Travel Tip: For something unique, our Abu Dhabi Expert, Stuart Armsby, recommends a stay at the Anantara Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort – “There’s truly no other experience like it. You can enjoy candlelit dinners surrounded by golden dunes, camp beneath the stars in a traditional Bedouin tent, and even spot local wildlife from the comfort of the infinity pool – it’s incredible!”

3. Blissful Beaches

With year-round sunshine, Abu Dhabi makes for the perfect escape to get that well-deserved fix of vitamin D. There’s plenty of beautiful beaches to be found on this Emirate archipelago, but one of the most notable is Saadiyat Beach, a sweeping stretch renowned for its pale, white sands and glistening turquoise waters. If you’re extremely lucky, you may even get the chance to spot one of the endangered Hawksbill turtles that come to lay their eggs on the shore.

4. Desert Adventures

Outside the of city’s high-rises lies a world of desert wonder. Reaching impressive heights of over 300m, Abu Dhabi boasts some of the tallest sand dunes in the world; and with such extraordinary landscapes, comes extraordinary activities. Thrill-seekers will be in their element with the choice to sandboard or quad bike down the towering, golden slopes, and for those looking for soft adventure, camel rides and falconry demonstrations are excellent choices.

5. Exceptional Cuisine

It wouldn’t be a visit to Abu Dhabi without trying some of the delicious Emirati cuisine on offer. Traditionally, meals burst with platters of slow-cooked lamb and chicken, accompanied alongside a mezze of aromatic rice and fresh, seasoned vegetables. After dinner, it is customary to wash down your meal with one of the fine cups of Arabic coffee the UAE is famed for. You can sample authentic dishes at most restaurants throughout the city, though our Kenwood Travel Experts say some of the finest meals they’ve had lie in the streetside cafes and traditional dhow boats.

Dubai vs Abu Dhabi: Should you visit the UAE's 'stuffy uncle' or 'sophisticated aunt'

Some destinations will always get pitted against one another. In this series, two passionate writers go head-to-head to explain why you should visit their chosen destination.

Just how different are Dubai and Abu Dhabi ?

While only a little over an hour's drive from each other on the country's Persian Gulf coast, these two major metropolises are distinctly different.

So which is the best? Let's hear the arguments from two writers before you decide.

Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the tallest man-made structure in the world at 828 meters

Why Dubai is more fun

Lonely Planet Editor-at-Large Sebastian Modak’s idea of a good time is asking a Dubai cab driver where to get lunch. And then, after a delicious meal, asking the employees at that restaurant where he should go for dinner.

I could take the easy route here by listing all the superlatives attached to Dubai. In a single afternoon, you can take an elevator to the top of the world’s tallest building , hit your 10,000 steps in the world’s largest shopping mall and even glide down the world’s largest indoor ski slope. You can ride the world’s largest Ferris wheel and then kick back in “the world’s only seven-star hotel.” You ask why, Dubai answers, “Because we can.”

But pointing to Dubai’s unmistakable appeal as a kind of living theme park for tourists is too obvious. Instead, I want to point you to its real beauty, as a crossroads of the world. Name a nationality and you’ll find it in Dubai. Sure, the same could be argued for nearby Abu Dhabi, but as a global financial center, Dubai just has more of it. And it’s a place where encountering the world – without the government bureaucrats and buttoned-up diplomats you’ll find in Abu Dhabi – is just more fun.

Dubai's newest museum wants to take you to the year 2071

A textile souk in Bur Dubai

The real magic of the city is found where it began, along Dubai Creek and in the low-rise neighborhoods of Bur Dubai and Deira that extend on either side of it. It’s like stepping back in time – the 1960s are ancient history in a city as new as Dubai – and is a reminder of what the city was like before it started growing vertically. Follow your nose through the souks and in no time you’ll find the best Filipino, Indian, Pakistani and Iranian food you’ll find outside of the Philippines, India, Pakistan and Iran. Overwhelmed? There’s a tour for that: the women-run Frying Pan Adventures offers walking tours with a focus on the immigrant communities and their cultures that flourish away from the five-star hotels and amusement parks.

Top neighborhoods to explore in Dubai

A central square in Dubai's sprawling Global Village

Okay, but maybe you came to Dubai because you want the amusement park vibes. You can encounter the world in one of those too, at the deliciously kitschy Global Village. A kind of turbocharged Epcot Center, “village” is an understatement here. Spread over a massive space, different countries and regions are given different pavilions to sell food and handicrafts. It’s a celebration of the 190-something nationalities that make the U.A.E. the U.A.E and good, old family-friendly fun.

Abu Dhabi is your very cultured – but, let’s be honest, kind of stuffy – uncle. Dubai is your polyglot friend who knows about that one hole-in-the-wall kebab spot where you can have the best meal of your life for under ten dollars but is also going to convince you to go skydiving and splurge on beachside cocktails right afterward. And they’ll have a whole other day planned when you wake up the next morning.

Abu Dhabi: A Stuffy Uncle?

Dr. Jenny Walker is a long-term resident in the Middle East where she works in higher education; she has contributed to many Lonely Planet guidebooks on the region over the years, including the first edition of the Abu Dhabi pocket guide .

The strait-laced alter ego of Dubai? Abu Dhabi only appears as such to those who don’t know better. And you could be forgiven for not knowing better because, where Dubai likes to talk itself up, boasting ‘biggest’ this and ‘fastest’ that, Abu Dhabi doesn’t feel the need to brag, quietly confident as the Emirati capital.

Modesty shouldn’t be confused with mediocrity, however, and Abu Dhabi is no stranger to world records. But where Dubai measures firsts in terms of tower blocks, Ferris wheels and shopping malls, Abu Dhabi’s best lists are more culturally unique. Take the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque ; with its 100,000 tons of marble fashioned into 80 domes, 1000 pillars and four 107m-high minarets, it’s a masterpiece of contemporary Islamic design. Accommodating 40,000 worshippers, the great prayer hall, lit with 12 tons of crystal chandeliers and burnished with 40 kilos of 24kt galvanized gold, houses the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. Weighing in at 38 tons, that’ s a superlative to boast about!

Tania AbuZeid Dahbour: Revelry, romance and family in Abu Dhabi

Or let’s talk dynamic innovation. There’s Capital Gate , a building with the world’s greatest tilt, or Masdar City , built with recycled materials and focused on energy efficiency. The Saadiyat Cultural District will showcase the largest cluster of cultural structures built this century and already Abu Dhabi Louvre is breath-taking with palm-frond-inspired interior and wealth of art displayed within.

Prefer theme parks to museums? Abu Dhabi has those too. In fact, it has a whole island dedicated to high-adrenaline fun with a Grand Prix circuit and twilight racing showing off the Yas Island marina complex to its most glittering advantage. Next door, the world’s fastest rollercoaster, at Ferrari World , hurls the brave from zero to 240km/h in 4.9 seconds.

So no, this capital city is not shy of world records, nor is it as parochial as its neighbor would have you believe. Abu Dhabi doesn’t need a Dubai-style Global Village because it encompasses the real thing. Grown wealthy on oil (and formerly pearling), it knows about trade and its international malls and restaurants add accretions to the cultural mix, like the layering of a Gulf pearl.

Hashel Al Lamki: Creating space for creativity in Abu Dhabi

Enjoy a traditional coffee inside a traditional Bedouin tent in Abu Dhabi

Stroll the Corniche and it’s quickly apparent that Abu Dhabi isn’t simply a blandly globalized entrepôt. It identifies with Bedouin roots, celebrated in camel races, dog-rearing at the Arabian Saluki Centre  and bird-husbandry at the Falcon Hospital. In fact, Bedouin culture is everywhere in evidence – from coffee-drinking hospitality in the Qasr Al Sarab desert resort to cross-legged storytelling on a Liwa Oasis sand dune. Yes, in Dubai you can ski on a black run, but you could probably do that closer to home on real snow. Where other than Abu Dhabi, though, can you paddle by kayak through herons in a thicket of mangrove in search of sea cows?

So, let’s forget about ‘stuffy uncle’ to Dubai’s petulant nephew and think ‘sophisticated aunt’. Grown-up, multi-tasking, urbane (like the Abu Dhabi women emerging from higher education), she wears a glamorous pair of heels beneath the abaya to impress those gutsy enough to engage.

6 Reasons Why You Should Visit UAE

Abu Dhabi

There’s no shortage of reasons why you should visit the United Arab Emirates. This small country located in the Persian Gulf is home to the tallest building in the world, some of the most luxurious hotels ever seen and a mixture of tradition and novelty that can rarely be found in other countries. The best reasons to visit the UAE can be found in each of its Emirates, all of which offer their own unique experiences.

This Emirate is the UAE’s capital and its largest state, occupying approximately 87% of the country’s territory. Abu Dhabi is the home of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque , one of the most beautiful and picturesque mosques in the world. Everyone is welcome in the Mosque to come in and see its exuberant architecture, as well as learn more about Islamic culture – visitors are just asked to dress respectfully. In addition to the mosque, Abu Dhabi is also home to the Yas Viceroy Hotel , where visitor can see the Formula 1 racing track and watch world renowned races. Only a few minutes drive away, you will find Ferrari World, an indoor amusement park themed after the famous car brand. The Emirate has been fast growing and constantly adding new attractions to its already long list of World Records and unique attractions. Abu Dhabi

Sharjah is located North of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and although the city doesn’t hold the same world famous attractions as the above two, like all other Emirates, it is definitely worth checking out. Perhaps one of its most popular attractions is the Sharjah Natural History Museum , where visitors can educate themselves about the flora and fauna of the Arabian Desert. This in itself is a remarkable experience, a great reminder that although the UAE is now populated by skyscrapers, it once was only desert. Another must see in Sharjah, is the Blue Souk, its impressive architecture is a favorite of residents and visitors alike. The market-like place offers traditional shops for tourists to indulge themselves. This is the only Emirates on the East Coast of the UAE. Fujairah has a breathtakingly beautiful geography that can’t be found anywhere else in the country. The Emirate offers the perfect contrast of massive mountains and endless beaches to either side of it. This is the ideal Emirate for those who love the sea and enjoy snorkeling, as its crystal clear beaches are full of sea life. Only approximately an hour and a half drive away from Dubai, visitors can spend the day here and head back to their hotels in the evening, although it’s better to take the opportunity to stay in one of their various luxurious beach resorts.

Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is the ideal Emirate for an escape from the city. With high-end beach resorts such as Banyan Tree , where guests can book rooms with their own beach front and swimming pools, this is one of the UAE residents’ favorite places for a weekend get away. The Emirate is also well known for its historical ruins such as Dhayah Fort. For those seeking a thrill in Ras Al Khaimah, they must visit Jazirat Al-Hamra, also known as Ghost Town, where there are now only abandoned houses as residents left the area decades ago amid suspicion that it was haunted. Ajman and Umm Al-Quwain

These two Emirates are much less showy than their counterparts but although they may not have the same abundant landmarks as Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Ajman and Umm Al-Quwain still qualify as reasons to visit the UAE, as each of them offer something individual. Ajman has its share of beautiful beaches as well as history. The Ajman Museum was built by the historical Ajman Fort and gives a further insight into the past of the United Arab Emirates. Meanwhile, Umm Al-Quwain is home to Dreamland Aqua Park , one of the world’s largest waterparks, offering families visiting the UAE an opportunity to road trip to this awesome park and enjoy their day in the sun. 13 amazing natural wonders you can visit in Abu Dhabi

Get these on your bucket list….

Abu Dhabi is a land of beautifully blended contrasts. Of worlds old and new, of deserts, island networks, and lush green oases set against hyper-modern towerscape, and future-tech enhanced infrastructure. Contained within its borders there are many marvels, but often less accessible, it’s the stunning natural ones can easily be overlooked.

This is a guide to some of our favourite Abu Dhabi natural wonders, and where to find them.

Al Mirayr forests

Pic Credit: @wonguy974 via IG

Just a stone skim away from the beautiful Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara ( geolocation here ), you’ll find the arresting sight of a desert forest, known as Al Mirayr. It’s unlikely to be the largest wooded expanse you’ll have clapped eyes on, but with its juxtaposition to the saffron-hued desert sands around it, it might just be one of the most impressive. You’ll need a 4WD enabled vehicle to get there, and if you fancy extending the wadi roaming, there are plenty more exciting sights to explore in the surrounding sand. For more off-the-beaten-track adventures, check out our guide to some of the best off-road trips in Abu Dhabi .

Al Ain Oasis

If you’re looking for green, Al Ain AKA ‘The Garden City’ is a pretty good place to start.  This 1,200-hectare desert oasis is found in the middle of Al Ain and attained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011. It contains more than 147,000 date palms, trees bearing mangos, oranges, bananas, figs, and jujube. With its whimsical shaded pathways beneath fractal canopies it’s a place that provides a shuddering contrast to the urban jungle of Abu Dhabi’s cityscape. There’s also an Eco-Centre that offers insight into the conservation efforts at the oasis, and a look back at its history.

Al Ain, open daily 9am to 5pm. Tel: (03)  711 8251 , take a virtual tour at  visitabudhabi.ae

Al Wathba Fossil Dunes

The desert areas of the UAE hold many wonders, but few can compare to the ethereal beauty of  Al Wathba’s fossil dunes . These naturally occurring monoliths are jutting, jagged reminders of the emirate’s storied geological past, having been forged over the past 120,000 years. Found a short distance away from the (also well-worth a visit) Al Wathba Wildlife Reserve, an expanse covering more than 1,700 of the fossil dunes has now been designated as a protected landmark. The Al Wathba Fossil Dune Protected Area now features a visitor centre, a viewing area, an amphitheatre and 7kms of hike-able trails with educational signage explaining the origins and cultural significance of these magnificent sand relics.

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

A popular resting spot for flamingos during autumn and spring, this note-worthy site can be found beside the beautiful Al Wathba fossil dunes. Known as Flamingo City, it is home to various wildlife habitats, including freshwater and saltwater lakes. The area hosts over 250 bird species, and 37 plant species, as well as a plethora of marine life. The wetland is a popular place for bird watching and even offers two self-guided walking routes to explore the area. To keep the area as natural as possible, there are no cafes so be sure to pack in your reusable water bottles as the walking routes are quite long.

Desert Lakes

There’s a bit of a catch with this pair of entries… Their location is a trade secret (and, well, the second one probably isn’t ‘natural’ is it?). Both images were captured (well before the current drone ban) by the incredibly talented, intrepid photographer, @amarhabeeb . He’s responsible for the discovery of another lisiting a bit further down, but these finds starkly represent what can happen when you follow that pioneer nomad spirit and explore the desert for hidden wonders. Safely of course, it can be an inhospitable place without modern luxuries. If you’re heading out to the wilds, tell someone, go accompanied, go prepared, take more fuel, water and food than you need, and remember there is currently a ban in place for all non authorised drone flights.

Jebel Hafit

Part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jebel Hafit is Abu Dhabi’s tallest peak, located in Al Ain, and about 90 minutes’ drive from the capital city. There is a campground that offers tented accommodation and pitches for those that wish to bring their own canvas and poles. You can also rent traditional Bedouin-inspired tents; bubble tents — equipped with panoramic windows that are just perfect for star-gazing; and luxury dome tents which come with AC, a TV and, excitingly a telescope. Prices start from Dhs650. Holiday-makers come here to hike, mountain bike (rental available), dune buggy, ride horses and camels and enjoy the rare fresh air (and lack of light pollution) that contributes to the perfect conditions for astronomy. Wonders above wonders below.

You can book your stay now here or by calling (03) 711 8362.

Jebel Hafit Beehive Tombs

Situated at the foothills of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient tombs mark the beginning of the Bronze Age in the Middle East. 5,000-year-old structures and evidence of ceramic vessels and copper artifacts were found here, indicating the importance of maritime trade across the Arabian Gulf even then. You can visit the park’s majestic natural surroundings on a mountain bike, horse, or camel. Discover archaeological and historical remains that tell stories of this unique area’s ancient habitation.

Mangrove Forests

ubail Mangrove Park opened in January 2020 , offering visitors the opportunity to explore one of this region’s most fascinating natural ecosystems. Found nestled on a quiet outcrop of Jubail Island — the mangroves became an instant hit with locals, residents and tourists. It features a meandering 2.3km boardwalk and sits about 20 minutes drive from Downtown Abu Dhabi. Park inhabitants include herons, flamingos, turtles, gazelle, crabs, as well as some more mysterious creatures. There’s plenty of ways to explore this fascinating turquoise expanse including ranger-led, guided boardwalk (from Dhs50), kayak (Dhs100), and e-canoe tours (from Dhs80) of the mangroves.

Jubail Mangrove Park, Al Jubail Island (next to Saadiyat Island), Abu Dhabi, 8am to 7.30pm daily, Dhs15 for adult, Dhs10. Tel: (05) 63032423.  park.jubailisland.ae

Liwa Oasis and Tal More’eb

Found at the northern edge of Rub’ Al Khali (the Empty Quarter), Liwa Oasis is the ancestral home of the Nahyan family and the Bani Yas tribe. The Liwa Oasis area marks out a 100km stretch of desert, where the dark green of date trees cuts a stark contrast against the amber desert sands. It’s all possible thanks to an elevated water table, close to the surface. There are walled areas, reconstructed forts and watch towers and a collection of truly gigantic dunes, including Tal More’eb , at 300 metres high it’s one of the world’s largest.

Found at the eastern edge of Al Jubail Island, close to Zeera Island and across the water from Khor Laffan, this fluvial feature found amongst the mangroves was given the name ‘Plant Lake’ by the individual that discovered it — Abu Dhabi-based photographer, Amar Habeeb (Insta handle: @amarhabeeb ). The stunning depth of green is no Photoshop trickery, it really is that lucid. When the beguiling natural feature popped up on the digital viewfinder of his drone remote, Habeeb recalls immediately thinking “Emerald Green. I couldn’t believe my eyes”. As mentioned above, the private use of drones is currently prohibited in Abu Dhabi, so you’re unlikely to be able to replicate this epic shot any time soon.

Saadiyat Reef

The emirate’s coral reefs are currently subject to a massive rehabilitation project, supervised by the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD). Even with the effort in full swing, there are a number of dive sites across the Abu Dhabi archipelago that offer safe and legal access to coral reefs. You can find multiple dive companies offering chartered trips out to locations such as Philippe’s Reef and Saadiyat Reef (weather and numbers permitting), with prices from around Dhs300 for snorkelling and Dhs500-600 for scuba activities. Whilst the variety and vibrancy of the reef’s colour might not match those found in some other more famous dive spots in the world, the marine life you’ll find navigating them, is truly mask-misting. Turtles, for example, are not an uncommon sight.

Abu Dhabi’s  Salt Lakes  took Instagram by storm last year. Bloggers, influencers and the naturally curious headed out to their location near Al Wathba Wildlife Reserve, to capture snaps with the narrow pastel green lakes filled with crystalline lily pad features. You can find the exact location on  Google Maps , but getting there isn’t easy. Take an SUV, take snacks and back up supplies, tell someone where you are going, do not litter, and make sure you’re all fuelled up. We promise it’s worth it.

Shuweihat Island

This beautifully unique island is surrounded by red rocks and erosion-carved cliffs, with pristine beaches. Unfortunately due to littering and mistreatment, making landfall on the island is currently prohibited for the public. However if you do make the trip, you can enjoy the view from a distance.
