Big Shark Bicycle Co. presents Missouri’s top cycling event over Labor Day weekend.

The Gateway Cup features four days of racing across four neighborhoods of St. Louis. The best professional and amateur cyclists will put on a show as they zip around Lafayette Square, Francis Park, The Hill and Benton Park from Sept. 1 to 4.

The four full tilt races showcase “criterium format” racing on one-mile laps. This Americanized style of racing appeals to both athletes and spectators as the peloton speeds by you every few minutes, holding lines only inches apart from one another.

Spectators can watch the race develop lap after lap and hear commentators announce race strategy as the excitement builds.

Gateway Cup

4 DAYS OF RACING, 4 UNIQUE ST. LOUIS NEIGHBORHOODS!

The 38th edition of the Bommarito Audi West County Gateway Cup takes place in the heart of FOUR unique and awesome St. Louis neighborhoods. You can download a flyer with race times HERE.

Within each of these host communities, the race course is a defined one mile lap and the race format is known as a “criterium.” This Americanized style of racing appeals to both athletes and spectators alike as the peloton, or pack of cyclists, pass by every few minutes at impressive speeds holding lines only inches apart from one another. Spectators can watch the race develop lap after lap and hear commentators announce race strategy, allowing more of an understanding and involvement in the excitement. Returning for 2023-  all four days of the Bommarito Audi West County Gateway Cup are included on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar.

There are 9 races each day based on ability, ranging from newbies to pros. Each day begins with the amateur races and builds up to the featured events, the men’s and women’s professional races. In these races, 150 of the top national and international cyclists will hurl themselves through corners averaging 30 mph towards a typically thrilling sprint finish. Guaranteed inspiration.

For the Men’s and Women’s Elite Classes we have an overall Omnium competition for best aggregate results over all four days of racing. Each day we score the top 15 places and assign points towards an overall prize. Points are awarded 25, 20,16, 14, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Both Pro Men and Pro Women Categories will compete for equal prize money. $20,000 per gender, with $6,000 being in both the men’s and women’s Omnium.  Including the other amateur races, there will be a total cash purse of $50,000+ up for grabs. Check out our Payout Schedule Here .

The Gateway Cup is the final race of the US Masters Cup , a competition for the best Masters Racers in the United States. Three age groups (40+, 50+, 60+) will be competing for an overall Series Prize List at three marquee events this season – Tour of America’s Dairyland (TOAD), The Intelligentsia Cup, and the Gateway Cup.

2024 Vann Knight Tuesday Night World Championship Criterium Training Series 3/12/24 to 8/27/24

What: A St. Louis cycling tradition. The Vann Knight Tuesday Night World Championship Criterium Series has been going on for over 30 years. This is the perfect training opportunity for any cyclist who wants the challenge of fast, mass start bike racing. Keep your fitness sharp and experience the American cycling art form of criterium racing. Criteriums are a mass start bicycle racing format that is extremely popular in the US, especially in Carondelet Park. See what USA Cycling has to say about it here .

When: Tuesday Eveningsm March 12 - August 27, 2024

Why : Criterium racing is terrific for improving speed, tactics, positioning, handling, and fitness. Where:   Carondelet Park 3900 Holly Hills Blvd, 63136

How it Works: Each race lasts a specified duration plus 3 laps with the final lap signalled by the ringing of a bell.

Race Information:

Most evenings there are two races: A and B

  • The "A Race" will be for USA Cycling Category 1, 2, and 3 licensed racers.
  • The "B Race" will be for USA Cycling Category 4 and 5 licensed Men, Category 1/2/3 licensed Women, and Masters 50+ Category 1/2/3 Men, All Juniors
  • Racing Age for Juniors is defined as being under 18 prior to 12/31 of the current year.

Pre-Race Clinics : These will hopefully return for the 2024 season.

The Course:  is a wide open .7 mile loop with a fast downhill turn + a bit of elevation gain.  Pavement quality is near perfect and corners are very safe.

The Perfunctory Stipulation:  In exchange for usage of the course, the City of St Louis requests that we simply respect the Park and the residents of the adjacent neighborhood. 

Parking:  The area will be available as close to 5:30 pm as possible. Please do not park blocking the one-way access loop on the west side of the course/park.

EARLY Number Pick up Saturday, March 9th Register early for the first race, purchase a Season Pass and get your cloth bib number early on Saturday March 9th from 2pm until 5pm at Big Shark's Big Bend Location- 1155 South Big Bend Blvd. 63117 Please have these items with you, completely filled out and ready to go: 1. USA Cycling Series Waiver. 2. USA Cycling Current License 3. Payment - Credit card Only- Online through Bike Reg (made payable to Big Shark Bicycle Company)

Registration:   Online Only - on site will be possible via www.bikereg.com and opens around 5:00 pm each Tuesday.  Registration closes 30 seconds prior to the start of each race. Numbers issued are for the entire series- so hang on to your bib number!

Race Fees are as follows:

  • Entry fee is $20.
  • Your 2nd race on the same night: $5
  • Fees include a $5 per rider insurance surcharge/BAR fee.
  • Replacement bib numbers: $5
  • Season Pass- before March 12th,  purchase all 27 races for $450. This includes a 2nd race on the same night. Normally $675. Season Pass holders must check in each evening at the registration tent.
  • The Junior Race Entry is underwritten by Renaissance Financial Services

Continuingfor 2024! The Renaissance Financial Junior Race Series . Renaissance Financial , a St. Louis based business and personal financial planning company, is committed to growing Junior Cycling. All Junior Entry Fees for every Big Shark produced Road, Time Trial, Criterium, or Cyclocross Event are underwritten. The only requirement is that each Junior provide a minimum of one hour of volunteer work at one of our events. From helping set-up, assisting during the race, or helping at the end of the day. Each age group/gender will be scored and assigned points throughout the season. Points earned at the Bommarito Audi Gateway Cup will be counted double. Winners of the 17-18 Age Groups for young men and women will be awarded a $250 Gift Card. We will post the rankings monthy in our online Race Results.

Important!   ALL participants must have a current year USA Cycling license (1-Day and Annuals are available on site).  Riders must report to registration each evening to be included on the start list. Please don't be THAT racer.
