This place is the cultural capital of Karnataka and as it is named it has places for all kinds of people ranging from great historian sites to the beautiful gardens and plant nurseries to the marvelous and enthusiast Mysore zoo. People who have different mindset towards nature should visit this place because it comprises of every part of nature and in a very beautiful way.

1. Bangalore

At a distance of 139 km from Mysore, 261 km from Tirupati, 347 km from Chennai, 348 km from Mangalore, 573 km from Hyderabad, 514 km from Kochi and 595 km from Goa, Bangalore (also known as Bengaluru) is the capital city of the Indian state of Karnataka. Bangalore is third most populous city and 5th largest City in India. It is also known as the Garden City of India. Bangalore is often referred as Silicon Valley of India due to large number of technology companies established in the city.

2. Coorg (madikeri)

At a distance of 265 km from Bangalore, 117 km from Mysore, 132 km from Mangalore, 322 km from Coimbatore & 362 km from Kochi, Coorg or Kodagu is a district in Karnataka and Madikeri is the district headquarters. It is a major waterfalls near Bangalore and also one of the best waterfalls in India, sometimes referred to as the ‘Niagara of India’.

At a distance of 89 km from Coimbatore, 128 km from Mysore, 265 km from Bangalore,158 km from Kozhikode, 244 km from Munnar, 254 km from Kodaikanal, 18 km from Coonoor & 556 km from Chennai, Ooty is one of the best hill stations in India and also one of the top places to experince Tamilnadu Tourism.

At a distance of 25 km from Chikmagalur, 40 km from Hassan, 165 km from Mangalore, 154 km from Mysore and 217 km from Bangalore, Belur is very famous temple town situated in Hassan District of Karnataka State. It is renowned for the grand Hoysala Temple dedicated to Lord Chennakesava, an incarnation of Vishnu. It is the best of three Hoysala temples nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Sites (other two being the temples at Halebid & Somnathpur). The Hoysala temples are known for minute & intricate carvings and sculptures with metal like polishing. It is one of the best heritage sites in Karnataka, situated on Bangalore to Chikmagalur route. 7. Srirangapatna

At a distance of 18 km from Mysore, 26 km from Mandya and 124 km from Bangalore, Srirangapatna or Srirangapattana is a historical town in Mandya district of Karnataka. Located near the city of Mysore, Srirangapatna is among the popular tourist places in Karnataka owing to its cultural, religious and historic importance and also one of the top places to visit in Mysore. The entire town is surrounded by the river Kaveri to form a river island.

8. Halebidu

At a distance of 17 km from Belur, 34 km from Chikmagalur, 32 km from Hassan, 148 km from Mysore & 211 km from Bangalore, Halebidu is located in Hassan District of Karnataka State. Halebidu (or Halebid) is famous for the beautiful Hoysala Temples of Hoysaleswara and Kedareswara built in 1121 AD. It is one of the three Hoysala temples nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Sites, other two being the Belur temple & Somnathpur temple). The Hoysala temples are known for minute & intricate carvings and sculptures with metal like polishing. Halebidu is among the most popular tourist places in Karnataka.

9. Banasura Sagar Dam

At a distance of 22 km from Kalpetta, 21 km from Mananthavady, 46 km from Sulthan Bathery, Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earthen dam in India and second largest in Asia. This is one of the most popular tourist places in Wayanad. Banasura Sagar Dam across the Karamanathodu River, a tributary of River Kabini, is ideally placed in the foothills of Banasura hills, which got its name from Banasura, the son of King Mahabali, the famous ruler of Kerala. It is said that Banasura undertook severe penance on the top of the hills. Banasura hill is the third largest peak in the Western Ghats.

10. Belavadi

At a distance of 82 km from Kemmangundi, 64 km from Chikmagalur, 27 km from Belur & 12 km from Halebid, Belavadi is a village situated in Chikmagalur District and is famous for Sri Veera Narayana Temple built in Hoysala architectural style. The place is described as Ekachakranagara of Mahabharata and is said to be the place where Pandava prince Bheema killed the demon Bakasura and protected the village and its people.

11. Dubare Elephant Camp

At a distance of 29 km from Madikeri and 15 km from Kushalnagar, Dubare Elephant Camp is an elephant training center situated on the banks of the river Cauvery in Kodagu district of Karnataka. Dubare is a natural island formed by Cauvery River. Dubare is one of the most famous places to visit in Coorg and also one of the top attractions you must include in Coorg packages.Dubare is an important base for the Karnataka Forest Department’s elephants. Dubare Elephant Camp is a project undertaken by forest department and jungle lodges & resorts. This camp has plenty of elephants which are trained under naturalists. The elephants used for Mysore Dussehra are trained at this camp.

12. Brindavan Gardens

At a distance of 16 kms from Srirangapatna & 19 Kms from Mysore, Brindavan Gardens is a famous & beautiful garden laid out below the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam. The construction work of the garden was started in the year 1927 and completed in 1932. The garden was designed by Sir Mirza Ismail, Diwan of Mysore based on Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir in the Mughal style. Spread over an area of 150 acres, the Brindavan Gardens is considered as one of the best gardens in India. The garden is enriched with fountains, terraces, parterres, running and cascading water channels, lush green lawns & flower beds.

13. Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

At a distance of 16 Kms from Mysore & 3 Kms from Srirangapatna, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a small sanctuary spread across 67 sq.kms. The sanctuary comprises of six islets on the banks of the Kaveri River. It was declared in 1940 as a result of many requests from Dr Salim Ali who surveyed the birds in this area. Since then, the sanctuary has become a paradise for bird watchers. The sanctuary is a breeding ground for many migratory birds from all over the world. It is home to a wide species of birds including cormorants, darters, white ibis, spoon billed storks, open billed storks, painted storks, white necked storks, egrets, herons, terns, swallows, kingfishers, sandpiper etc.

14. Kukke Subrahmanya Temple

At a distance of 100 Kms from Mangalore, Kukke Subrahmanya Temple located in Subrahmanya (or Kukke Subramanya) is one of the most famous temples in Karnataka and one of the important temples of Lord Subrahmanya (Lord Murugan). This temple is famous for Sarpa Dosha. Lord Subrahmanya is worshipped as the protector of all serpents. The epics mention that the divine serpent Vasuki and other serpents found refugee under Lord Subrahmanya when attacked by Garuda.

15. Emerald Lake

At a distance of 17 km from Ooty and 27 km from Coonoor, Emerald Lake, a serene lake with emerald blue waters, is located near Emerald village in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. Situated amidst dense forests, it is one of the top Ooty tourist places. The lake is part of the Silent Valley National Park situated on the way to Avalanche village. The blue waters of Emerald Lake surrounded by lush green meadows and forest is simply mesmerizing. The water is crystal clear and of course cold. This is a great place to enjoy the day with breathtaking views of the slopes of Nilgiris. Emerald Lake is also a haven for a variety of birds. It is a mini paradise for bird lovers and ornithologists as they get to see and study a number of native birds. It is also notable for the scenic sun rise and sun set views near the lake. 16. Bannerghatta National Park

At a distance of 23 km from Bangalore City Railway Station, Bannerghatta National Park is the most famous wildlife park and also one of the top tourist places in Bangalore. This park is spread in reserve forests of Anekal Range with an elevation of 1245 – 1634 m under the Bangalore Forest Division. This park is part of a wildlife corridor for elephants which connects the BR Hills and the Sathyamangalam forest. Bannerghatta National Park was founded in 1971 and declared as a national park in 1974. Spread over an area of 25,000 acre and a portion of the park became a biological reserve called the Bannerghatta Biological Park in 2002. The park consists of the main Nature Reserve, a zoo, a children’s park, an aquarium, a crocodile park, a museum, a butterfly park, a snake park and a safari park. The forest consists of deciduous trees and thorny scrubs.

17. Janapada Loka / Folk Art Museum

At a distance of 52 Kms from Bangalore City Railway Station, the Folk Art Museum or Janapada Loka is situated on the Bangalore – Mysore highway near Ramanagaram. This is one of the popular places of interest in Bangalore. Numerous collections of masks, artifacts, costumes, collection of folk music and videos of folk dances are exhibited in the museum. Spread over 15 acres, the artifacts in the museum are kept in three buildings namely Lokamahal, Lokamatha Mandira and Chitrakuteera. In Lokamahal the visitors can find interesting folk puppets, utensils, instruments, weapons and masks. In Lokamatha Mandira a wide variety of baskets, utensils and earthen jars are featured which were used to store & grain pickles. In the Chitrakuteera a number of photographs covering different aspects of folk life is displayed.

18. Channapatna

At a distance of 58 Kms from Bangalore towards Mysore, Channapatna is a small town famous for wooden toys. This place is also famous for door hangings, powder boxes and traditional jewellery. Fort of Jagadevaraya family built sometime during 16th century is also an interesting place to visit in Channapatna. Timmapparaja Urs mansion, a three storied building made of brick and mortar and was home to Timmapparaja is also worth visiting. The building is a typical example of Hindu mansion from 19th century.

19. Biligiri Ranga Hills

At a distance of 85 km from Mysore, 40 km from Chamarajanagar and 170 km from Bangalore, the Biligiri Ranga Hills popularly known as the BR Hills is a lofty hill range in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka. It is considered to be the wildlife corridor that connects Eastern Ghats to Western Ghats. This is one of the popular tourist places to visit near Mysore and is one of the top attractions you must include in Mysore packages.BR Hills is famous for BRT Wildlife Sanctuary (Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary). The highest peak within the sanctuary is the Kattari Betta. At a distance of 15 km from Kukke Subramanya, 30 km from Somwarpet, 65 km from Madikeri, 115 km from Mangalore, 260 km from Bangalore, Kumara Parvatha, also known as Pushpagiri, is a beautiful mountain peak located in Pushpagiri reserve forest near Kukke Subramanya town in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. Situated at an elevation of 1712 m above sea level, Kumara Parvatha trek is one of the toughest treks and most popular trekking destinations in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. The trek distance is around 25 km (with return) and usually done in 2 days.

At a distance of 20 km from Coonoor, 29 km from Ooty, and 72 km from Coimbatore, Kotagiri is a small hill station in the Nilgiris district of Tamilnadu. Situated at an altitude of 1793 m, Kotagiri is the oldest and the third largest hill station in the Nilgiris after Ooty, and Coonoor. At a distance of 12 km from Sulthan Bathery, & 37 km from Kalpetta, Chethalayam Waterfalls is a beautiful waterfall located near Kidangand, towards Pulpally from Sulthan Bathery. It is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in Kerala and among the best places to visit during your Wayanad trip . This is a seasonal waterfall in Wayanad region, but it is ideal for trekking. Chethalayam Waterfalls with its picturesque beauty, scenic slopes, and blue water bodies are worth the trek up. Its surroundings offer several vantage points for bird watching. This waterfall is situated close to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary which is inhabited by spotted deer, sambar, gaur, elephants, and sloth bear, amongst others. One has to trek about 4 km from Kidangand to reach the falls. The Forest Range Office at Chethalayam issues visitor passes to the waterfall. Their permission is mandatory to get into the jungle surrounding the waterfall. One can avail of the services of a guide from the check post. Wild elephants, at times, pass through the area. For that reason, the Guide service becomes indispensable to this 4 km trek. The falls may completely get dried in summer, so the post-monsoon season is the best time to visit the falls. 90. Karappuzha Dam

At a distance of 17 km from Kalpetta, Karapuzha Dam is an earth dam situated near Vazhavatta in the Wayanad district of Kerala. It is one of the biggest earth dams in India and also one of the major Wayanad tourist places. Karapuzha Dam is built on Karapuzha River, a tributary of Kabini River. The construction of the dam began in 1977 and it was completed in 2004. The height of the dam is 28 meters and length is 625 meters. The purpose of the dam is irrigation and it left and right bank canals are still under construction. The dam is located in the greenish and natural regions of Wayanad. It is an ideal place for watching aquatic birds that frequent the reservoir, which is surrounded by partially submerged hills and green islands. The Tourism Department has ambitious plans to develop the area around Karapuzha Dam. They plan to landscape the area, construct an aquarium and provide boating and canoeing facilities also. Vazhavatta is connected by few buses with Kalpetta. But Meenangadi town (7 km from the Dam) on Kalpetta - Sulthan Bathery road has frequent bus facility. Private transportation can be availed from Meenangadi to reach the Karapuzha Dam. The road to Karapuzha Dam is very bad and the short distance takes about 30 minutes. There is not much to see near the dam except the view of the water and surrounding hills. The water level is very low in summer and not recommended to visit in summer. Timings: 9 AM - 6 PM

6. Folklore Museum

7. Melody World Wax Museum

Melody World Wax Museum started in 2010 in a heritage building. The museum has a large collection of Karnataka’s musical instruments in addition to pieces from all over India.

Expect to find instruments from various eras and genres, from classical to indigenous, Punjabi bhangra to jazz, Hindustani to hip-hop; all music has a home here, and all with life-size wax statues playing them.

8. Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon

Built by Tipu Sultan to hold his British prisoners, the dungeon is named after Colonel Bailey who died in miserable captivity there in 1780. The 30 by 12-meter wide structure still has the prison hooks in the wall to which prisoners were tied.

The dungeons as you would imagine are dark, damp and frightening. The atmosphere still holds the sense of suffering and you rarely hear laughing even from the jolliest tourist. It is an interesting place to visit especially for war history aficionados.

1. krishna raja sagar dam.

Close to confluence of the Kaveri, Hemavathi and Lakshmana Tirtha Rivers stands the mighty KRS Dam, built-in 1932 the sheer magnitude of the structure is mind-blowing. It stands at 130 feet and has over a hundred sluice gates. Historically India’s first irrigation dam and one of the main water sources for Mandya and Mysore.

2. Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens

1. st. philomena’s church.

Established in 1840, historically designed by French artist Daly and drawing heavily on Germany’s Cologne Cathedral, St. Philomena’s Church is one of India’s largest built to hold close to eight hundred people.

01 . Mysore Palace/Amba Vilas Palace

Undoubtedly the most popular tourist attraction of Mysore, Mysore Maharaja Palace is located in the heart of Mysore city. Known for its renowned Mysore Dussehra Festival, it is one of the largest palaces in India. This palace was designed by a known British architect, Henry Irwin.

Residence of Mysore kings Wodeyars, the present structure of the palace was built in 1912 when the previous wooden building caught fire during a wedding ceremony of Chamaraja Wodeyar eldest daughter Jayalakshammanni. This palace is known for its architectural beauty which combines Muslim, Gothic, Hindu and Rajput style of architecture as well as Indo-Saracenic architecture.

It is said to be the fourth building to be constructed on the same location. An imposing structure, it is almost impossible to miss it for anyone on Mysore tour. Located at the Sayyaji Rao Road, Agrahara, Chamrajpura, it opens at 10 AM and closes by 5.30 PM.

One can enter the palace through four majestic arched gates which lead to the beautiful garden surrounding the palace. 02 . Jayalakshmi Vilas Palace

Built in 1905, for Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar’s eldest daughter, Jayalakshmi Vilas Palace also used to be called First Rajkumari Mansion. One of the most beautiful palaces in Mysore, it has been declared as a heritage site by the government of Karnataka.

This palace houses three museums namely Folklore Museum, Archaeology Museum and General Museum. This spacious palace, which is spread over 6 acres of land, has around 125 rooms and more than 250 carved doors and windows. It is located near another popular Mysore attraction Kukkarahalli Lake.

03 . St. Philomena’s Church

It is the second largest church in South Asia. It was built by Mysore King for the European residents of Mysore, setting an example of religious harmony and understanding. This church is dedicated to St. Philomena.

Initially a small church, it was later renovated into its present grandeur by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar. Established by His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche in 1933, this monastery presents a serene spiritual atmosphere along with a captivating architecture.

05 . Chamundeshwari Temple

No trip to Mysore is complete without a visit to the highly regarded Chamundeshwari Temple. Not only religiously inclined, this temple attracts nature lovers too. Located on top of Chamundi Hills, this temple has been built in Dravidian architectural style. The main deity of this temple is Goddess Chamundeshwari, who is also considered at the deity of Mysore Royal family.

07 . Krishna Raja Sagara Dam

Popularly known as KRS Dam, this dam was built in 1932 during the reign of Wodeyar Kings. Named after Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, it is the creation of Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, who is considered to be one of the best engineers of India.

Built over Cauvery River, this dam is also the first irrigation dam of India. It is 130 feet high and has 152 sluice gates. About 3km long, this dam is around 20 km away from the Mysore city. 08 . Lalitha Mahal Palace

Located at the foothills of Chamundi Hills, it is the second largest palace of Mysore. This palace was designed by E.W. Fritchley. The structure of this palace is believed to be an imitation of St. Paul’s Cathedral which is located in London. It was built in 1921, by the Mysore King Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV to serve as a guest house for the then Viceroy of India. Later on it served as a royal guest house.

In 1974, Lalitha Mahal Palace was converted into a luxurious heritage hotel. It is currently maintained by the Ashok Group of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC).

Its architectural brilliance with pure white structure, imposing around lush greenery which has been, carefully maintained is a sight to be behold. Its grandeur along with the luxury and comfort of a royal stay attracts many guests from all over the world. 09 . Tombs of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali/ Gumbaz

Gumbaz consists of the tombs of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. It is located in Srirangapatna which is about 15 km from Mysore. It was built by Tipu Sultan in 1784 as tombs of his father Hyder Ali and mother. Later on in 1799 AD, Tipu Sultan was also buried here.

Standing in the midst of Lalbagh Gardens, these tombs captivate everyone with historical significance and alluring architecture alike. Their structure is found to be similar to that of Golconda Tombs. These tombs with a height of 20 meters are built in the Persian style of architecture. Visiting timings are 8 AM to 6 PM.

10 . Somnathpur Temple/ Chennakesava Temple

Located in Somnathpur, about 35 km away from Mysore, Chennakeshava Temple is one of the best examples of Hoysala architecture. Standing on a raised platform, this temple is a Trikuta. It consists of three shrines. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple was built in 1268 during the reign of King Narasimha III.

A heritage site, this religious shrine is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This temple has also been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site. It opens every day for visitors from 9 in the morning to 5.30 in the evening with a minimal fee of Rs.5 for Indian tourists and Rs.100 for foreign tourists.

11 . Trinesvaraswamy Temple

Located inside the Mysore Palace Complex, this temple is on its north eastern corner. Trinesvaraswamy Temple stands facing the Mysore Fort. Built in the Dravidian style, this temple is dedicated to three-eyed Lord Shiva, often referred as Trinesvara.

Initially located on the Banks of Doddakere, this temple came under the premises of the fort when the fort was extended during Kanthirava Narasaraja Wodeyar and Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar rule. The temple too has been renovated under the reign of Maharajas of Mysore.

12 . Lingabudi Lake

Located in Srirampura which is 8 km from the centre of city, Lingabudi Lake is a freshwater lake. Built in 1828 by Mysore king Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, this lake is the one of the oldest lakes in Mysore. It is also considered to be the largest lake of Mysore with an area of 260 acres. It attracts visitors with its bewitching scenery. Not just humans, it is an equally popular place amid the avian fauna. Verditer Flycatcher, Brown-headed Gull, White Ibis, open billed storks, little cormorants, egrets, river terns, Pied Avocet and Common Teal are just a few birds that one can commonly spot at the lake. As many as 250 varieties of birds are found around the Lingabudi lake.

13 . Karanji Lake

Initially built as a source of drinking water and as a source of water for day to day chores, Karanji Lake was built by Mysore Maharaja. However, later in 1976, this lake became a part of Mysore zoo and since then it is maintained by Mysore Zoo authority. This lake is spread over 90 acres of land and is often referred to as the fountain lake.

Located at the Chamundi foothills, it has the largest walk-through aviary in the country. Not only visitors seeking a captivating view and serene waters, this lake attracts a lot of birdwatchers as well. More than 147 species of birds are seen here. The Regional Museum of Natural History, Butterfly Park are other attractions at the Karanji Lake.

14 . Kukkarahalli Lake

Built in 1864, this lake was the brainchild of Krishnaraja Wodeyar. Spread over 58 hectares, Kukkarahalli Lake is often visited by nature lovers. Its 5 km long shoreline is also a major attraction point apart from the rich avian fauna. Close to 180 varieties of birds can be spotted around the lake.

Its scenic beauty has mesmerised many painters and poets such as Gopalakrishna Adiga, S.L. Bhyrappa, T.S. Venkannaiah, A.N. Murthy Rao, G.S. Shivarudrappa, V. Seetharamaiah, who have praised this lake in their creations. Situated in Saraswathipuram, near the University of Mysore, it is easily accessible. It is only 3 km away from the Mysore railway station.

17 . Mysore Sand Sculpture Museum

The first sand sculpture museum in the entire country, it is a unique and comparatively new addition to the list of sightseeing places in Mysore. Inaugurated in 2014, this museum showcases a wide array of brilliantly sculpted sand creations. This museum is a brainchild of M.N. Gowri, who is one of the very few women sculptors in India.

One of its kinds in India, Mysore sand sculpture museum, presents sculptures made just out of sand and water, depicting unparalleled craftsmanship, precision and creative excellence. A 3-dimensional selfie gallery has also been added to the museum in 2017.

Mysore Sand Sculpture Museum presents 16 different themes of sculptors. Some of the themes are Dasara procession, Disneyland, civilizations, Goddess Chamundeshwari, wildlife and many more.

18 . Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery/ Jaganmohan Palace Art Gallery

Jaganmohan Palace, an alternate home of Mysore royal family, was converted into an art gallery in 1915, during the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. In the honour of Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar Bahadur, this art gallery was renamed as Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery in 1955.

One of the best art galleries in India, it boasts of a rich collection of artefacts and paintings of the renowned painters from all over the world. 19 . Folklore Museum

Another interesting museum to visit in Mysore is the Folklore Museum. Established in 1968, this museum, as the name suggests, focusses on the varied folk arts and crafts of Karnataka. It has a rich collection of more than 6500 archives about dance, literature, music and various other arts forms from all over the state.

The collection range includes puppets, masks, props from folk dramas and much more. Situated inside the campus of University of Mysore in Manasa Gangothiri, it can be visited from 10.15 in morning till 1.15 in afternoon. It reopens at 2.30 in afternoon till 5 in the evening. 20 . Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts

Arizona Supreme Court rules a near-total abortion ban from 1864 is enforceable

PHOENIX — The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban still on the books in the state is enforceable, a bombshell decision that adds the state to the growing lists of places where abortion care is effectively banned.

The ruling allows an 1864 law in Arizona to stand that made abortion a felony punishable by two to five years in prison for anyone who performs one or helps a woman obtain one. 

The law — which was codified in 1901, and again in 1913 — outlaws abortion from the moment of conception but includes an exception to save the woman’s life.

That Civil War-era law — enacted a half-century before Arizona even gained statehood — was never repealed and an appellate court ruled last year that it could remain on the books as long as it was “harmonized” with a 2022 law, leading to substantial confusion in Arizona regarding exactly when during a pregnancy abortion was outlawed.

The decision — which could shutter abortion clinics in the state — effectively undoes a lower court’s ruling that stated that a more recent 15-week ban from March 2022 superseded the 1864 law.

The Arizona Supreme Court said it would put its decision on hold for 14 days, writing that it would send the case back to a lower court so that court could consider “additional constitutional challenges” that haven’t yet been cleared up.

Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, said moments after the ruling that she would not enforce the law.

“Let me be completely clear, as long as I am Attorney General, no woman or doctor will be prosecuted under this draconian law in this state,” Mayes said in a statement, adding that the decision was “unconscionable” and “an affront to freedom.”

Democrats all the way up to President Joe Biden also blasted the ruling.

“Millions of Arizonans will soon live under an even more extreme and dangerous abortion ban, which fails to protect women even when their health is at risk or in tragic cases of rape or incest,” Biden said in a statement. He called the ban “cruel” and “a result of the extreme agenda of Republican elected officials who are committed to ripping away women’s freedom” and vowed to “continue to fight to protect reproductive rights.”

Vice President Kamala Harris announced shortly after the ruling that she would travel to Arizona on Friday “to continue her leadership in the fight for reproductive freedoms."

Responding to questions from NBC News about the Arizona ruling, a spokesperson for Donald Trump's campaign referred only to the former president's comments on Monday that abortion restrictions should be left to states.

“President Trump could not have been more clear. These are decisions for people of each state to make," Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs called for the GOP-controlled Legislature, which is currently in session, to repeal the 1864 ban, though there was no immediate indication that Republican lawmakers in either chamber would take up such an effort.

"We are 14 days away from this extreme ban coming back to life," Hobbs, a Democrat, said at a press conference. "It must be repealed immediately."

While Hobbs said she was "sure" reproductive rights advocates would appeal the ruling in the 14-day window they were given, she also suggested that the best avenue to counter the ruling would be for voters to support abortion rights on the November ballot. A separate, ongoing suit would allow for abortion providers to continue providing services through the 15th week of pregnancy for another 45 days.

"It is more urgent than ever that Arizonans have the opportunity to vote to enshrine the right to abortion in our constitution this November. I’m confident that Arizonans will support this ballot measure, and I’m going to continue doing everything in my power to make sure it is successful," Hobbs said.

In a 4-2 ruling, the court’s majority concluded that the 15-week ban “does not create a right to, or otherwise provide independent statutory authority for, an abortion that repeals or restricts” the Civil War-era ban “but rather is predicated entirely on the existence of a federal constitutional right to an abortion since disclaimed” by the 2022 Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.

“Absent the federal constitutional abortion right, and because” the 2022 law "does not independently authorize abortion, there is no provision in federal or state law prohibiting” the 1864 ban.

They added that the ban “is now enforceable.”

Tuesday’s ruling is the latest chapter in a decadeslong saga of litigation in the battleground state over abortion rights. 

Reproductive rights groups had sued to overturn the 19th century law in 1971. But when the Roe decision came down in 1973, a lower state court ruled against those groups and placed an injunction on the 1864 ban that remained in effect until the Dobbs decision.

In March 2022, Republican lawmakers in the state enacted the 15-week trigger ban, which, months later — after the Dobbs decision — snapped into effect. The law makes exceptions for medical emergencies but not for rape or incest. 

Litigation resumed after that decision as lawmakers on both sides of the issue sought clarity on whether to enforce the 1864 near-total ban or the 2022 15-week ban.

A state appellate court initially ruled that both the 1864 and 2022 laws could eventually be “harmonized,” but also said that the 15-week ban superseded the near-total abortion ban and put on hold large parts of the older law.

The decision also sent shockwaves through the reproductive rights community in Arizona and nationally.

Angela Florez, the president of Planned Parenthood Arizona, one of the state's remaining abortion care providers, said her group would now only be able to provide abortion care through the 15th week of pregnancy — and only "for a very short period of time."

The issue, however, could soon be in the hands of voters.

Abortion rights groups in the state are likely to succeed in their goal of putting a proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would create a “fundamental right” to receive abortion care up until fetal viability, or about the 24th week of pregnancy.

If voters approved the ballot measure, it would effectively undo the 1864 ban that now remains law in the state. It would bar the state from restricting abortion care in situations where the health or life of the pregnant person is at risk after the point of viability, according to the treating health care professional.

That ballot effort is one of at least 11 across the country that seek to put the issue directly in the hands of voters — a move that has the potential to significantly boost turnout for Democratic candidates emphasizing the issue. 

In 2024, that could factor heavily into the outcome of both the presidential and U.S. Senate races in Arizona. Biden, whose campaign is leaning heavily into reproductive rights, won the state by just over 10,000 votes four years ago. And the Senate race features a tough battle to fill the seat held by the retiring independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, most likely between Democrat Ruben Gallego and Republican Kari Lake. 

During her unsuccessful 2022 run for governor in Arizona, Lake said she supported the 1864 law, calling it “ a great law that’s already on the books .” But Lake now says she opposes the 1864 law , as well as a federal abortion ban, while also acknowledging that her own views regarding state policy conflict with some voters’ preferences.

In a statement following the decision, Lake said she opposed the ruling, adding that "it is abundantly clear that the pre-statehood law is out of step with Arizonans." She called on state lawmakers to "come up with an immediate common sense solution that Arizonans can support."

"Ultimately, Arizona voters will make the decision on the ballot come November," she added. 

Gallego, who is backed by several reproductive rights groups, has said he supports the ballot measure. As a member of the U.S. House, he is among the co-sponsors of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would create federal abortion protections.

In a video posted to X after the ruling, Gallego said he would, with reproductive rights supporters, "fight all the way to November so we can get abortion rights back for women in Arizona."

Other Republicans in the state who’d previously expressed robust support for Roe being overturned joined Lake in condemning the ruling. Reps. Juan Ciscomani and David Schweikert , who both face tough re-elections this fall, both called on state lawmakers to address the issue “immediately.”

The ruling Tuesday — the second in a swing state on the issue in as many weeks — further highlights the already prominent role abortion rights will play in Arizona and across the country.

Last week, the Florida Supreme Court upheld a 15-week ban on abortion in the state, which effectively meant that a six-week abortion ban, with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the woman, that Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law last year will take effect. The state's high court also allowed a proposed amendment that would enshrine abortion protections in the state constitution to appear on the November ballot.

Tuesday's decision, while jarring to reproductive rights groups, wasn’t entirely unexpected. All seven justices on the Arizona Supreme Court were appointed by Republican governors, and during opening arguments in December, they aggressively, but civilly, quizzed attorneys on both sides about the fact that the 15-week ban enacted last year did not feature any language making clear whether it was designed to repeal or replace the 1864 ban.

Only six justices participated in Tuesday’s decision, however, after Justice Bill Montgomery — who previously accused Planned Parenthood of practicing “generational genocide” — recused himself. (The court’s chief justice did not appoint another judge to take the spot, which is an option under Arizona law.)

The abortion landscape in Arizona has been uniquely confusing since Roe v. Wade was overturned. 

While the 1864 law had been on hold after the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe decision, then-Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, successfully sued in 2022 to have that injunction lifted following the overturning of Roe, putting the ban back into effect — though a higher court put that ruling on hold. 

But after Mayes succeeded Brnovich as attorney general, she announced that she would not enforce the 1864 ban.

That led to suits from anti-abortion groups seeking enforcement of the ban, which ultimately led to the case making its way up to the state Supreme Court.
