  • The author has a wide range of fics, from slash to het to general.
  • It might seem odd to put an entire RP here, but the players are amazingly good, the plot is well-written, and they aren't afraid to have fun with it. Includes Thor, Loki, Frigga, Jane, Darcy, Dr. Selvig, and a bunch of other Marvel characters.
  • Recommended by Red Wren
  • Loki-focused, mostly hurt/comfort with some humor.

General Fics  Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

  • Synopsis : Loki sits in a prison cell and waits to hear his fate. If luck turns his way, that fate could provide him with another opportunity to finally earn the respect, admiration, and power he covets. He doesn't dare dream he could return to Midgard. There he's met a number of people of interest… but there is only one he's vowed to visit. If Loki falls again, does another abyss await him?
  • Comments : An epically long fic which readers can easily sink several days into digesting and, once caught up, find themselves eagerly anticipating the next chapter of. Be warned that this is an absolute monster of a fic with over 200 chapters to its name—while it's absolutely worth your time, it's not a fic to take on lightly.

  • Synopsis: After failing to take over Earth, Loki has returned to Asgard and become King due to a series of events. He kidnaps a Midgardian that he's been stalking for most of her life and forces her to become his queen.
  • Warnings: Mature Content, contains StalkerWithACrush and RomanticizedAbuse
  • Comment: Loki's portrayal in this fan work differs after the events of the Avengers and includes some of the events of Thor: The Dark World . Loki's portrayal is written as a combination of his movie appearances with a smattering of his mythological backstory, and it creates an unforgettable villain turned Deurotaganist.

  • Synopsis: Someone starts to notice that Odin treats Loki in ways that are neglectful and borderline abusive and starts to feel very uncomfortable about it. It becomes worse when people at court start to take after Odin's treatment of Loki. But they still don't feel comfortable voicing they're doubts out loud. And then the lip-sewing incident happens.

  • Synopsis: Thor loses Mjolnir to the ice giant Trym, who will only return it in exchange for a bride. Of course Loki knows exactly how to handle this .
  • Comments : Well written, utilizes Norse mythology effectively, weaves itself into canon smoothly and even enhances it. Not to mention the whole thing is hilarious. An in-character bonding story for the sons of Odin.

  • Synopsis: Odin and Frigga's struggle to raise Loki, a baby from a species they have only know in battle before. Particularly frustrating for Frigga, who is the goddess of motherhood.
  • Comments: From the same author as the above recommendation, this fic deserves a mention for being not only both sweet and heartwarming but also really funny and faithful to the characters. The parts focusing on Frigga and Loki are adorable and her reactions believable, and the author gets bonus points for doing a portrayal of Odin as a troubled but good father instead of the Ron the Death Eater portrayal fandom likes to use. The ending is also too perfect.

  • Recommended by somebody else, Sheliak
  • Synopsis: Before his adoption by Odin, Loki was abused by an Asgardian warrior. This warrior was subsequently banished for war crimes. Many years later, the warrior is pardoned and returns. Loki remembers.
  • Comments: I wasn't expecting this story to be so awesome. Believable, angsty with moments of levity to balance it out, thought provoking, predominantly from Thor's perspective, and... really, really packs a punch. Both the culprit and a related character (canon) are represented in a horrifying way, but given their behavior in comics and the presentation of abuse I wouldn't call it OOC so much as artistic interpretation. The relationship between Thor and Loki is particularly stunning.
  • Seconded. Thor and Loki's relationship in both fics is great —the first shows it more from Thor's side, the second more from Loki's. It's wonderful, and they both seem like themselves even though the circumstances end up very different from canon. -Sheliak.

  • Synopsis: After all these years, Loki realized, he was still nothing more than a frightened little boy.
  • Comments: The prompt was found from the kinkmeme, but the author mixes real Norse mythology with movie canon and has created one of the most heart-wrenching fics out there. Has Loki/Thor in the beginning, but mostly centers around Loki’s relationships with others.

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by somebody else, Mooncinder
  • Synopsis: Due to the immense damage he causes and their inability to contain him, S.H.I.E.L.D. decides the way to deal with Loki is to brainwash him to their cause.
  • Comments: This is a stabbed-through-the-heart-and-twisted-too sort of fic. Very well written, very upsetting, short and powerful and absolutely worth reading.

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by somebody else
  • Synopsis: An AU oneshot based off of Doctor Doom's canon experimentation on Loki clones. Loki, reincarnated as a boy after Siege, dreams over and over of being ripped apart on an operating table.
  • Comments: I honestly feel like it would be a crime not to list this here. Sad, horrifying, touching, and sweet—this is one of best, if not the best hurt/comfort fics I've read in a long time. The heroes are in-character and actually DO what heroes are supposed to do, Doom is terrifying and believable as a villain, Loki doesn't lose his mischievous streak or personality despite being utterly traumatized, and the whole thing is just a vivid, stunning, and thoroughly satisfying piece of fiction.

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by Ingu, Long Live Humour
  • Synopsis: Loki dials the wrong number by accident, and then decides to keep doing it for fun.
  • Seconded. This fic is non-stop hilarity with a few heartfelt, very touching moments thrown in. Loki's texts to Steve are hysterical and it feels only natural that the God of Chaos has mastered text-speak. Great for a good laugh!

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by Ultio, Mooncinder , Faramir
  • Synopsis: What if Loki were captured by the Frost Giants during the beginning battle? What if they thought they were rescuing him?
  • Comments: This one is long but really worth it. What if Loki were given more of a chance to come to terms with his heritage?

wandering child ao3

  • Synopsis: Jormungandr seems to enjoy encircling, unsettling, and threatening to swallow Thor a little too much. And Thor finds himself almost hypnotized every time he has to face Jormungandr, drawn into a twisted predator/prey dynamic he doesn't quite understand.
  • Comments: This feels authentically mythological, Jormungandr is unsettling in a very eldritch abomination sort of way, the characterization is spot on everywhere, descriptions are amazing, and...yep, pretty kickass. There's a hint of sexual tension in the foe yay flavor but nothing explicit.

  • Synopsis: Post-Avengers. Thor and Loki never get back to Asgard. Now S.H.I.E.L.D. is stuck with the world's most hated war criminal on their hands and everyone wants a piece - unless they can find a way to get rid of him for good.
  • Comments : This is an amazingly written story that keeps Loki very much in character as his dangerous and unhinged self while simultaneously covering questions of morality, loyalty, and the risks of tempting "fate" in quite a literal sense.

wandering child ao3

  • Synopsis: Post-Avengers AU. (Pulled from prompt) "After the Avengers capture Loki at the end of the movie, they lock him up as a precaution before shipping him off to Asgard. And being the good guys, they decide to give him the chance to bath and dress in clean cloths instead of sleeping in his own dirty rags. The problem is, without the whole battle gear and the drawn and mean look, Loki looks surprisingly young, which prompts the Avengers to ask Thor just how old Loki really is. Of course Loki is centuries old, but Thor tells them that in human standard, Loki would still be considered underage! Cue to horrified Avengers who wants to know exactly what sort of crappy home life Loki must have had to end up like this before even reaching adulthood.
  • Warnings for: Alternative Character Interpretation , Crazy Cultural Comparison , Culture Clash , and triggers that the author will warn for at the beginning of the particular section. It was also controversial enough (particularly on the nature of the Alternative Character Interpretation ) to warrant closing Part Nine of the Kinkmeme early due to the Fan Wank it attracted. Read at your own discretion.

  • Synopsis : For years, Loki had served his father as an agent of stealth and silence, cunning and trickery. Thor was his father's right hand, serving him at court and at battle, but Loki was his left hand, the one that lingered behind, darting swiftly to strike when the enemy's attention was elsewhere.
  • Comments : Kink meme fic, basically about Spy!Loki and his heartbreaking exploits. He believes that the way for him to serve Odin is to take all the subtle damage directed towards the royal family upon himself, and they way Loki thinks of himself in this fic is full of all the sadness. Then ending made me cry, and trust me, I do not cry easily. Plus the writing is magnificent. Everyone should read this, but especially if you like hurt comfort.

  • Synopsis: Loki falls to Midgard after the first movie and, rather than becoming a supervillain, decides to lay low and do his best to keep out of Heimdall's way. But hiding is harder than he expects, and after the latest in a long list of criminal groups goes too far in their attempt to recruit him, he takes up Agent Coulson's offer to join SHIELD.
  • Comments : The story is largely character-oriented, and it does its job extremely well. The dialogue is superb and Loki's personality is still clearly very similar to his canon one, just applied in a different direction.

  • Pairing: Loki/Original Character
  • Synopsis: Thor just wanted his brother back. When Loki is set loose from Hel with a thirst for blood and a burning hatred for the living, Thor has no choice but to hide him away where he cannot cause chaos, trapping him in a castle imbued with powerful magic. But Loki still hungers. The Allfather cannot bring himself to subject an innocent to his brother’s impulses, but when a prisoner of Asgard begs to avoid the executioner’s blade by any means necessary, it seems that the Norns have granted him some small measure of relief. After all, a warped brother is better than no brother at all...isn’t he?
  • Warnings: Mature Content, Dub Con , & Blood Drinking
  • Comments: Short, only five chapters long, but it was a Dark!Loki Halloween Prompt request. Well written, intriguing, and just the right amount of creepy.

Shipping Fics  Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

  • Pairing(s): Loki/Sif
  • Synopsis: Asgard expects Sif, an admired warrior who possesses all qualities they hold dear, to be Thor's lover. The truth isn't always so neat.
  • Comments: Very, very in-character. This story is stylistically beautiful, well-paced, provocative, and shows so much not only with what characters say or do, but what they DON'T say or do. The whole piece feels incredibly honest and is highly recommended.

wandering child ao3

  • Pairing: Loki/Sif
  • Synopsis: Loki would never call Sif easily offended, but he had spent no small portion of his life practicing the fine art of stoking her ire. The only problem he saw was the fact that, this once, he hadn't actually done anything.

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by Candelabra
  • Pairing: Thor/Loki
  • Synopsis: Loki is cast out instead of Thor, and manages to get by with the humans on Midgard much less conspicuously than Thor ever did. As he struggles to come to terms with his banishment and the growing suspicion that he's not truly Odin's son, Thor insists on visiting him and making everything more difficult than it could have been.
  • Comments: Very in-character. One of very few stories in the Thor film fandom that manages a perfect balance between Loki's jealousy and loneliness. I actually don't like this pairing, but the author manages to write it in a very believable and convincing way. Definitely worth reading.

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by Psyche, Candelabra
  • Pairing: Loki/Darcy
  • Synopsis: Darcy thinks of the sharp curve of Loki's smile, of his long pale fingers and his eyes like chips of ice. Some things are much more amazing and important than photosynthesis and Youtube and the ability to eat a whole box of Pop Tarts.

  • Pairing: Loki/Jane
  • Synopsis: From the moment Loki strikes the earth onward, he desires revenge on his family. The strange Cube SHIELD has found may be his key. But when he hides his identity to get info from Jane Foster, something inside him begins to shift. And when a mysterious villain steals the Cube, Loki is forced to choose between vengeance and the life of the woman who loves his brother.
  • Seconded. The author does a fantastic job of weaving Norse Mythology and legend into Loki's backstory, making his character all the more layered and sympathetic given what he's endured throughout his life. I also never really cared for Jane, but she and Loki really do fit perfectly with one another, thanks to some very compelling storytelling.

wandering child ao3

  • Pairing: Loki/Thor
  • Synopsis: Thor and his esteem issues and his magical sentient hammer go hunting for tricksters in Jotunheim.
  • Comments : The summary makes it sound a lot more silly than it is. There are definitely moments of humour in this fic, quite a few in fact, but it's also a dark, quite interesting take on the characters, notable especially for the way Thor is characterized. Very well done. (I'll add some warnings in here because the author uses Choose Not to Warn: mentions of rape, abuse, and of course explicit incest and BDSM, as well as cannibalism)

wandering child ao3

  • Pairing: Heimdall/Loki
  • Synopsis: Heimdall has watched Loki all through his life, and he alone knows his secret crimes and hurts. This is where the story becomes a lie, he thinks.
  • Comments: An interesting blend of the comic-verse (particularly the Ragnarok cycle) with the movie-verse and the original Norse Mythology. Particularly interesting for its characterization of Loki and his reactions to those who love him.

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by Kereea and The Broken Bird
  • Pairing: Loki/Darcy, Thor/Jane
  • Synopsis: Another Asgardian has fallen to Earth, leaving Jane hopeful of Thor's return. But her hopes are dashed when the visitor is revealed to be someone else entirely: Loki. In-character, canon excepting post-credits scene.
  • The sequels include other pantheons and royal groups, such as Hermes, Oberon, and Titania.

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by Z Gory , Candelabra, Kilyle
  • Paring: Thor/Loki
  • Synopsis: Four years into a hopeless war against Eldritch Abominations , Odin bids Thor go find Loki and bring him home. Thor thinks it's pointless to punish Loki right now , but Odin has something else in mind....
  • Warnings : Dubious Consent note  More than halfway through, an effect causes Thor and Loki to desire each other and have sex despite neither one wanting it at the time; the effect triggers more than once over the rest of the plot, and at some point they just treat it as a pleasurable inconvenience — Thor even uses it to get some intel out of his taciturn brother and collaring.
  • Comments : Epic. Not just in length but in scope. The plot is exciting and intriguing. It has an episodic feel to it that makes me wish that it was the plot of the Thor sequel. Loki and Thor's characterizations are wonderful, and their pairing is built up to with the latter working through the former's issues without either giving in to angst. The pairing works into the plot, and it's just great all around. Also, it works with a somewhat more mythological-feeling Loki, rather than coming on the heels of a specific film.

wandering child ao3

  • Synopsis: Thor is a mischievous seidrmadr, Loki is a respected warrior prince.
  • Was originally listed under General Fics, was moved here because the pairing is quite unambiguously Thor/Loki. Still an amazing read, and worth checking out even if this isn't your ship of choice.

wandering child ao3

  • Pairing: Doom/Loki
  • Synopsis: "OKAY, normally I pull a line from the story as a summary, but I can't find a good one that summarizes SUPERVILLAINS IN LOVE, WAIT, IS LOVE THE RIGHT WORD? YES? PROBABLY? That's what this is about. Also mortality! Monsters! Armor! Asexuality! Gender! Violence! TRUE SUPERVILLAIN LOVE, YES."
  • Comments: Bizarrely sweet. There isn't really a better way to describe this—it really is TRUE SUPERVILLAIN LOVE. The progression of Doom's and Loki's relationship is perfectly entertaining and understandable without having any familiarity with Doom's backstory and canon. Warning for some violence and references to abuse, since author used "Choose not to warn."

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by actress92, Anonymous Apathy
  • Synopsis: In the wake of a treaty, Prince Loki of Jotunheimr travels to Asgard for the first time, where he meets the woman warrior-in-training, Sif. The volatile and intense bond stuck between them will alter the relationship between the two realms forever.
  • Comments: A very great version of the "What if Loki hadn't been taken by Odin?" AU storyline. The author is great at keeping Thor, Loki, and Sif all in character, and is particularly adept at the characterization of the Jotunns, making them complex real characters and not simply "monsters." And since this is a romance, it must be said that the romantic tension between Sif and Loki is very truthful and beautiful.

  • Pairing: Loki/Tony
  • Synopsis: The timeline starts in a fall of glass. There’s a staggering loss of gravity as Tony stares up at the suddenly blue sky.
  • Comments : A beautifully written, compelling story. It's funny, witty, and keeps you on your toes the entire way through. The characterization is spot-on and I have yet to read another Frost Iron fic that has taken hold of me as much as this one.

  • Synopsis: When the Avengers RPF kinkmeme happens, Darcy is all over that shit. So, it turns out, is Loki. They bond over the crack and the p0rn and somehow, end up meeting up—epic WTF and hot metatextual sex ensues.
  • Comments: This is a brilliant fic, screamingly funny, with levels of meta that will make your head spin. Converted many people, including this troper, to the Loki/Darcy ship. WIP, but absolutely worth it. Note: Had an entry on this page for some time, but it seems to have been zapped.

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by cybernedick
  • Synopsis : It started with a message, a late-night visit, and a God of Mischief in Tony’s bed. A story of trust, trickery, unwilling aid and inevitable attraction.
  • Comments : Compelling in its adherence to MCU canon with added Comic-verse elements that don't detract from either. One of the few Loki-centric fics that don't try to excuse or forgive his actions, and present his relationship with Tony as believable and paced. Masterfully showcases the ups and downs of the Dating Catwoman trope. You're never quite know whose side Loki is on but his own.

wandering child ao3

  • Recommended by Maxi 1234
  • Synopsis: Magic is for children and cruel, cowardly adults. This is what Thor and all Asgardians are taught and know is true.
  • Comments: This fic is based off two different prompts. One, that in Asgard, magic can only be used until one falls in love (but not so on Jotunheim), and two, an AU where Loki was taken as an actual stolen relic, and kept in Odin's vault until a suitable use had been found for him. The combination of these two is gorgeous, the story sucks you in immediately and the characterization is spot on. It's an amazing story—I highly recommended it.

wandering child ao3

  • Pairing: Thor/Jane
  • Synopsis: He finds that there are sweeter things than mead and glory and the fierce bright colors and rich textures of Asgard.
  • Comments: An AU oneshot in which Thor is on earth far longer, long enough to develop a real relationship with Jane, which just makes the inevitable outcome so much more tragic.

  • Synopsis: Being involved with the Avengers can be exciting during the fighting but like the rest of life, there are always boring necessities. Fury's meetings are one of them. A Loki/Darcy oneshot. Set in the post Avengers movieverse.
  • Comments: A very amusing oneshot, and Loki is surprisingly in character.

wandering child ao3

  • Synopsis: After he is taken back to Asgard, Loki escapes his prison and decides to return to Midgard. How can an angry and hurting god pass the time? Oh look, there’s Thor’s woman. He did promise to pay her a visit, right?

wandering child ao3

  • Synopsis: Thor 2 AU. He had always longed to be wanted by someone. His mother, his father, his brother, said brother's friends... He never would have guessed he would be wanted by a once insignificant Midgardian girl. And somehow, he didn't seem to mind.
  • Comments: This is only a twoshot, but what a wonderful twoshot it is. Loki's feelings are described in-depth and in character, making him sympathetic but also making you aware that he's still done bad things. While it is AU, it's only minor, as the changes it makes to the second movie is that Loki lives while it's Sif who dies instead . Placed in the pairing section because the pairing is what the story builds up to.

  • Synopsis: Loki falls into another realm, and learns there is more than one way to deal with being a monster.
  • Seconded, so much. A tremendous read even if you, like me, don't really know Being Human . The author gives so much thought to detail —for example the nature of Loki's magic—and creates such a believable setting that it keeps your eyes glued to the screen. I can especially recommend "Brother's Keeper" if you're looking for a reasonable account of how the relationship between Loki and Thor could improve under the right circumstances , that also happens to have quite an exciting plot.

Israel, Gaza and Double Standards, Including Our Own

A man walking among rubble below a cracked roof with exposed metal rods.

By Nicholas Kristof

Opinion Columnist

Does the West have a double standard when it comes to Israel, pouncing on everything it does with undue harshness?

When he was challenged about the bloodshed in Gaza on “Face the Nation” last weekend, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel responded , “What would America do” after something like the Oct. 7 Hamas attack? “Would you not be doing what Israel is doing? You’d be doing a hell of a lot more.”

Rabbi Marvin Hier in The Jerusalem Post condemned “an unprecedented double standard” that relentlessly criticizes Israel’s bombing of Gaza but is unbothered by the Allied bombing of civilians in Germany and Japan in World War II. And the World Jewish Congress cites “criticizing Israeli defensive operations, but not those of other Western democracies” as an example of antisemitism.

All this strikes me as both right and wrong, a fair point and a false one. I’ll come to why it’s wrong in a moment, but it is undeniably true that the world applies more scrutiny to Israel’s oppression of Palestinians than to many other horrors.

In 2023, for example, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 15 resolutions critical of Israel, and only seven resolutions critical of all other countries in the world together, by the count of one pro-Israel group. Does anyone think that represents even-handedness?

People are more focused on Israel than on what Unicef describes as a “wave of atrocities” currently underway against children in Sudan, while the number of children displaced by recent fighting in Sudan ( three million ) is greater than the entire population of Gaza. University students in America and Europe protest about Gaza but largely ignore the 700,000 children facing severe acute malnutrition in Sudan, after a civil war began there last April.

The Darfur region of Sudan two decades ago endured what is widely described as the first genocide of the 21st century. Now bands of gunmen once more are killing and raping villagers belonging to particular ethnic groups. I was seared by my reporting from Darfur during the genocide, and it staggers me that the world is ignoring another round of mass atrocities there.

Meanwhile, some of the worst mistreatment of Arabs in recent years was inflicted by Arab rulers themselves, in Syria and Yemen .

So is there a double standard in global attention? Absolutely. Defenders of Israel have every right to point all this out, and sometimes it does reflect antisemitism. Yet — now we get to the other side — it also strikes me as unconscionable to use the world’s hypocrisy, however invidious, to justify the deaths of thousands of children in Gaza.

That would be an echo of Russian whataboutism: How can you talk about our war in Ukraine when you Americans invaded Iraq and tortured people there?

It’s also true that while some university campuses may be guilty of selective outrage, that is not true of all observers. Some of the most incisive critics of Israel’s actions are from the very U.N. agencies and human rights groups whose staffs are risking their lives in the field to save lives in Sudan, Ethiopia and other countries.

In any case, there is a reason to focus on Gaza today, for it is not just one more place of pain among many contenders but, in the judgment of Unicef , the world’s most dangerous place to be a child.

Consider that in the first 18 months of Russia’s current war in Ukraine, at least 545 children were killed. Or that in 2022, by a United Nations count, 2,985 children were killed in all wars worldwide. In contrast, in less than five months of Israel’s current war in Gaza, the health authorities there report more than 12,500 children killed.

Among them were 250 infants less than 1 year old. I can’t think of any conflict in this century that has killed babies at such a pace.

Of course Israel had the right to respond militarily to the Oct. 7 attacks. Of course Hamas leaders should give up their hostages. But none of this excuses Israel’s “indiscriminate” bombing, in the words of President Biden, and restrictions on food and other assistance.

Because of America’s support for Israel’s invasion and diplomatic protection for it at the United Nations, this blood is on our hands, and that surely justifies increased scrutiny.

Yet here’s another double standard: We Americans condemn Russia, China or Venezuela for their violations of human rights, but the United States supports Israel and protects it diplomatically even as it has engaged in what President Biden has called an “over the top” military campaign.

“How can the U.S. condemn Russia’s bombing of civilians in Ukraine as a war crime but fund Netanyahu’s war machine, which has killed thousands?” Senator Bernie Sanders asked .

So it’s fair to talk about double standards. They are real. They run in many directions, shielding Israel as well as condemning it. And in a world where we are all connected by our shared humanity, I believe we should never let our very human tangles of double standards and hypocrisies be harnessed to deflect from the tragedy unfolding today for the children of Gaza, or America’s complicity in it.

A Carter County man and woman were arrested early Monday morning after a 911 caller reported finding their young child wandering near a road and no one at home at the residence.

Deputies of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ibrahim Boateng, 30, and Miram Boateng, 23, both of 106 Milligan View Road, Apartment 5, Johnson City, charging each of them with one count of child abuse and neglect.

Officers responded to the apartment complex at 106 Milligan View Road around 12:15 a.m. on Monday following a 911 call reporting a small child running across the grass in front of the apartments toward the roadway. The caller, able to secure the child, promptly dialed 911 and provided refuge in his apartment, believing the child resided in apartment 5.

Deputies proceeded to apartment 5, discovering the door ajar upon arrival. After announcing themselves repeatedly and receiving no response, officers entered the apartment to find it empty. Concerned for the child’s welfare, they contacted the Department of Children’s Services (DCS).

While awaiting DCS personnel, Ibrahim Boateng and Miram Boateng returned to the apartment around 1:30 a.m., identifying themselves as the parents of the child. The couple arrived with a 1-year-old child. Ibrahim Boateng explained to officers that they had left the 2-year-old at the apartment asleep while they went to purchase formula, as the child required a specific type. They left around 10 p.m., visiting several stores unsuccessfully due to closures.

Following interviews with DCS, both children were placed in DCS custody. Deputies subsequently arrested Ibrahim Boateng and Miram Boateng, transporting them to the Carter County Detention Center.

How a wandering white shark's epic journey could provide clues for protecting them

Patrick Whittle

Associated Press

In this photo provided by Chip Michalove, LeeBeth, a white shark, is tagged on Dec. 8, 2023, off Hilton Head Island, S.C. Scientists say the animal has been tracked further into the Gulf of Mexico than any white shark they've ever tagged before. (Chip Michalove via AP)

As sharks go, LeeBeth is something like a long-haul trucker with gills and giant teeth.

Swimmers at the beach might not be excited to see the 14-foot (4.3-meter) white shark, but scientists following LeeBeth's movements are thrilled that the big fish's epic journey could provide valuable clues to help the species . And they're curious where she'll go next.

White sharks, often referred to as great whites, were made famous by the 1970s hit movie “Jaws.” They roam the ocean searching for their favorite food, marine mammals, and were once hunted without discrimination. Some scientists believe growing populations of seals in parts of the Atlantic Ocean are helping the sharks, which were designated a protected species in 1997.

Since getting her tracking device near South Carolina in December, LeeBeth has traveled more than 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) south and into the Gulf of Mexico, the scientists monitoring her every move said Monday. They watched as she made history in late February by traveling further into the Gulf than any previously tracked white shark. A signal showed her off the coast near Matamoros, Mexico, just across the U.S. border from South Padre Island, Texas.

The shark's presence so far west indicates that this part of the Gulf of Mexico could also be important to other white sharks, said Megan Winton, a senior scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, based in Chatham , Massachusetts. International cooperation is important to protect the sharks, whose worldwide populations are recovering from decades of overfishing, she said.

“We don't know how many white sharks travel that far west, but it's a good indication they do,” Winton said. “There are only a handful of sharks that have been tracked west of the Mississippi.”

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy collaborates with Massachusetts state government to tag white sharks, with more than 300 tagged so far. Thousands more have been tagged by other organizations worldwide, Winton said.

The conservancy paired up with fishing charter Outcast Sport Fishing of Hilton Head, South Carolina, to tag LeeBeth.

Chip Michalove, who owns Outcast, said LeeBeth turned out to be an advantageous shark to tag, as she had sent more signals back from the tracking device than most. The tracker sends a signal whenever the shark breaks the surface of the water.

“Not only one of the biggest sharks we've caught, but she's the best-pinging shark as well,” Michalove said. “We definitely hit a home run with LeeBeth.”

The last time LeeBeth checked in was on March 7, when tracking data showed the great white to be about 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast of Galveston, Texas.
