Graduate Student Conference Travel

The college provides an additional $400 for travel for graduate students who are presenting papers at a conference and have already secured approval and funding from the Graduate School. You must be the first author of the paper and must be presenting it in person. When you return and file for reimbursement, contact your department support staff person for instructions. Each department is dealing with graduate student travel differently.

If you have exhausted the limit of three supported trips in your graduate career allowed by the Graduate School, you may apply for support for one trip per academic year from the college. You may submit a petition to Associate Dean Lori Martin, 132 Hodges Hall for additional funding  if your conference is a high profile one which will significantly improve your and LSU’s reputation. Besides your petition, which need not be more than half a page, you should include a letter or e-mail of acceptance by the conference and a letter or e-mail from your advisor or faculty member in support of your travel and describing the importance of this particular conference to your work and career. The petition should include a statement that you have permanently used up your allotted funds from the Graduate School and list the conference presentations you made on those trips. First priority will go to national and out-of-state conferences and low priority will be given to for conferences that focus largely on graduate student work. Funding is extremely limited, but your needs will be considered on a case-by-case basis as long as our annually budgeted support fund allows. You will be notified by e-mail if the petition has been approved and further directions will  be included in the e-mail. University travel rules apply in all cases and travel arrangements should be handled within the department. Please work with the support staff person in your department for assistance. Each department is dealing with graduate student travel differently.

Spring Break travel offers students a new perspective

March 25, 2024

This Spring Break, international travel gave two Coastal Environmental Science students a glimpse of what life is like in very different parts of the world. Sierra Moran, a senior, traveled to Ghana as a part of the inaugural class of LSU Global Ambassadors, and Betsy Cook, a junior, journeyed to Panama as part of the LSU Global Water Brigades.

The Global Ambassadors spent eight days traveling around Ghana, including spending time in Accra, the capitol city.

Sierra Moran made it through a rigorous nomination and interview process to become the CC&E representative to LSU Global Ambassadors . “I was honored to be nominated and [I] accepted immediately,” she said. While she had traveled on the North American continent, she said, “I have never have been overseas. This seemed like an amazing opportunity to be introduced to international travel.”

During the eight day trip, Sierra and her fellow travelers learned about Ghanaian life from a wide variety of perspectives. They spent a day with a local family, visited a center for unhoused youth, heard from experts on the country’s economy and political system and even met with representatives from the US Embassy.

They also delved into the country’s past, including its history with the trans-Atlantic slave trade. “We spent a day touring the slave dungeons in Cape Coast, which was very heavy and sad. We learned about the long-lasting impact slavery had on Ghana and many West African countries,” Sierra said.

The Global Ambassadors’ itinerary was designed to give them a better perspective on pressing global issues. For Sierra, the meeting with the Director of Climate Change and Sustainability at the University of Ghana was especially impactful. “He educated us on the environmental injustices happening in Ghana, particularly the exploitation of natives and their land for mining of gold and uranium by USA and China.”

Sierra said the trip was eye-opening. “Our time in Ghana was one full of new experiences, cultural immersion, and education on the social, political, and environmental challenges Ghanaians are facing. I have returned home with a much wider perspective and motivation to continue traveling and learning about the environment in other countries.”

In addition to helping improve village water infrastructure, Betsy and her fellow volunteers made connections with local residents.

Betsy Cook put service at the center of her spring break when she joined the LSU Global Water Brigades on a trip to Panama. “When I heard they were going to Panama, I knew I wanted to come.” Not only did the trip provide an opportunity to speak the Spanish she’d learned, she said, “I liked that it was a service trip.”

The LSU Global Water Brigades takes students on trips abroad, to work with communities around the world to develop clean water infrastructure. On this trip, Betsy joined CC&E Interim Dean Clint Willson and 6 other students as they journeyed to Panama, to Sinaí, a small village about 6 hours outside of Panama City.

The village, like many in the area, struggled with access to clean water, an issue that can impact all areas of village life. The group's goal was to help improve the village’s infrastructure.

“They had a chlorine filtration system, and so the water was relatively safe to drink,” Betsy said, “but their main problem was that they didn’t have running water anywhere. Everyone had to go to one place, and [bring] buckets and bottles just to get the water they need for the day.”

Such a labor intensive system means residents, particularly women, have to make compromises in order to survive. “What they end up doing is compromising on water safety,” Betsy noted.

Betsy said the LSU volunteers spent the bulk of their time trying to improve the way water was distributed in the village. “In terms of physical work, the main thing we were doing was building trenches, putting pipes down,” she said

The group had laid about 250 meters of pipe by the time the project was completed at the end of the week.

Betsy said the most meaningful part of her trip were the connections she made with local villagers, especially women. “They inspired me, how hardworking they were, and how passionate about their communities. In the United States, we can be more individualistic,” she said. “They inspired me to be a better steward of my community.”

Integrative Learning Core: LSU’s General Education Program

The Integrative Learning Core (ILC) curriculum is composed of two components.

First, students are required to complete 39 hours that provide a breadth of knowledge across the following  six Louisiana Board of Regents statewide disciplinary areas :

  • English Composition (six hours)
  • Mathematical/Analytical Reasoning (six hours)
  • Fine Arts (three hours)
  • Humanities (nine hours)
  • 2 courses in biological or physical science area sequence and one in the other area
  • Social/Behavioral Sciences (six hours)

The second component of the ILC curriculum will complement course content by incorporating proficiencies designed to cultivate leaders and produce nimble minds, minds that can take LSU graduates in any direction outside their specific discipline.

ILC proficiencies:

  • Civic Engagement
  • Ethical Reasoning
  • Global Learning
  • Intercultural Knowledge and Competence
  • Inquiry and Analysis
  • Oral Communication
  • Problem Solving
  • Quantitative and Formal Reasoning
  • Written Communication

Regulations

  • Students must complete the 39-hour ILC requirement prior to graduating from LSU . It is recommended that students complete the requirement during their first four semesters at the university.
  • Only those courses on the approved list below may be used to satisfy the ILC requirement.
  • An entering student may receive three or six hours of credit in English composition on the basis of ACT scores and/or performance on approved placement tests.
  • An entering student may receive credit for one or more of the required mathematics courses on the basis of placement test scores.
  • Advanced placement and advanced standing credit may be used to satisfy the ILC requirement.
  • ILC courses will be graded on the “A+,” “A,” “A-,” “B+,” “B,” “B-,” “C+,” “C,” “C-,” “D+,” “D,” “D-,” “F” system . No courses taken on a pass/fail basis will count toward the ILC requirement.
  • Appeals for an exception to the ILC requirements: A “Request for an Exception to the ILC requirements” must be submitted to the dean of the student’s college using the appropriate form. Please note that the ILC curriculum is a highly intentional aspect of undergraduate education. Courses are listed in the ILC curriculum on the basis of criteria associated with clear expectations for student achievement.  Accordingly, appeals of this type are discouraged and will be considered only in extreme circumstances.  Scheduling difficulties or allegations of poor advising do not constitute a reasonable basis for an appeal, nor does the perception that the content of a course adequately substitutes for a course listed in the curriculum. Requests are heard by the Faculty Senate Integrative Learning Core Committee. Where students intend to substitute a course for an existing approved ILC course, they should obtain a decision prior to taking the course intended for substitution.

Transfer Course Approval

Deans, or designees, are to determine the applicability of transfer courses to a requirement of LSU’s ILC program.

Courses without an LSU equivalent that are deemed applicable by the student’s dean or designee should be entered as a course substitution on the Student Records and Registration database, indicating that the course is accepted for ILC credit. Documentation concerning this decision should be kept on file in the college.

If it is determined that a course is equivalent to an LSU course, colleges should notify the Office of Enrollment Management so the Admissions Transfer Table can be updated.

If the college does not approve a transfer course for ILC credit, the student may petition the Faculty Senate Integrative Learning Core Committee for a decision, then Office of Academic Affairs for final decision.

Regents’ Statewide Articulation

LSU participates in the Board of Regents’ Statewide Articulation Consortium. Students who plan to transfer to another Louisiana public institution should consult the Office of Enrollment Management for information about the course transfer agreement.

ILC Courses

In the list of courses in the “ **COURSE SEARCH**   ” section of this catalog, ILC courses are designated within the course description.

When you need to renew a passport to travel to Europe

  • Wednesday 27 March 2024 at 12:10pm

lsu travel guidelines

Since Brexit , passport rules for UK visitors to the European Union (EU) have tightened up.

But many people may not be aware of the finer print, and some families are finding themselves thousands of pounds out of pocket when they have been banned from boarding flights due to the rule changes.

So what exactly are the rules for British travellers to the EU, and how can you avoid a passport disaster if you're jetting off for the Easter holidays?

How have the rules changed?

When the UK was a member of the EU, British passports remained valid up to and including their expiry date for travel to other EU countries.

But post-Brexit, British passport holders wishing to travel to EU countries in the Schengen Area are treated as non-EU nationals. This includes popular tourism destinations such as Portugal and Greece.

As such, they must meet two key requirements, as outlined on the EU's Your Europe website . If you are a non-EU national wishing to visit or travel within the EU, you will need a passport:

which is valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting;

which was issued within the previous 10 years.

This means you should really be looking at the date of issue when checking if you need to renew, as well as the expiry date.

It may appear that your passport is within date, but if it hasn't been issued in the past 10 years you could be stopped from boarding your plane or ferry.

Have you heard our new podcast Talking Politics? Every week Tom, Robert and Anushka dig into the biggest issues dominating the political agenda…

According to the government's website, for some Schengen countries, once the three-months-remaining rule is taken into account, a passport needs to have been issued no more than nine years and nine months ago.

What is the Schengen Area?

The border-free Schengen Area is made up of 27 countries and guarantees free movement to more than 400 million EU citizens, along with non-EU nationals living in the EU or visiting the EU as tourists.

It is comprised of most EU countries, except for Croatia, Cyprus, and Ireland. Bulgaria and Romania will be part of the Schengen Area as of March 31 2024. The non-EU countries Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein are also part of the area.

Aren't all passports only valid for 10 years?

Until September 2018, the UK had a policy that meant you could claim credit on 'unspent' time when renewing your passport, so you could be issued with a passport that was valid for up to 10 years and nine months.

People who took advantage of this policy could now find themselves caught out.

Do the rules affect children's passports?

Passports for under-16s are usually valid for five years, so there should be no chance of breaching the 10-year rule.

But be careful of the three-months-remaining rule, which states your passport must be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave the country. Children's passports are more likely to get caught out by this rule as their passports don't last as long.

Am I covered if I get caught out?

Unfortunately, if you don't make sure your passport will be accepted before you travel, you are unlikely to get back any money you lose.

Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, told ITV News: “There has been confusion over guidance for travel to the EU. Passports must be issued within 10 years of entry into your destination country and remain in date for at least three months after the day you plan to return to the UK.

“It is essential to ensure your passport is valid when you are due to travel and return home. Otherwise you risk losing the money for your flight or holiday as your provider will not refund you, and insurance will not cover you for the error.”

Do the rules apply anywhere else in the world?

These rules are specific to Schengen Area countries. If you are travelling to the rest of the world you should check the individual rules for entering those countries on the government website .

When should I renew my passport?

To be on the safe side, it's best to apply to renew your passport before it is nine years and nine months old.

You should allow up to 10 weeks to receive your passport, so you should apply for it at least 10 weeks before you're due to travel. The Passport Office say people usually get their passports within three weeks.

You can apply online (£82.50) or by post with a paper form (£93). Passport costs are set to increase by more than 7% in April, the Home Office announced this month.

If you need a passport urgently, you can pay more for the fast track service . The one-week service costs £155 for an adult passport and £126 for a child passport, while the one-day premium service costs £193.50, or £204.50 for a 54-page frequent traveller passport.
