Stuck on the Go

20 Best Things to Do in St. Thomas, USVI

Sharing is caring!

I’ve been to the Virgin Islands many times over the last few years and always enjoy all the fun things to do in St. Thomas, whether on the island or exploring the other islands nearby.

Most people think of gorgeous beaches and the great shopping in Charlotte Amalie when they think of the island, but there are so many other fun activities in St. Thomas that you can do.

Best part – you don’t need a passport to visit St. Thomas!

From family trips to a girl’s getaway to my honeymoon, I’ve been to St. Thomas with all kinds of travel partners, so I’m pretty well-versed in the epic things to do.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Lounge on Coki Beach
  • Go on a Food Tour
  • Take the Ferry to St. John
  • Island Hop Around the BVI

Note that if you’re a cruise ship passenger, you won’t be able to do the BVI day trip.

20. Fly Through the Trees on a Zipline

Charlotte Amalie is full of neat attractions and things to do, but St. Thomas is also an adventure-lover’s paradise.

I’ll cover things to do in Charlotte Amalie and so many other things that are spread out around the island or on nearby islands. Make sure that at least a few of these are on your St. Thomas itinerary !

1. Visit Paradise Point via the Skyride

gondola cabins on the skyride heading up to Paradise Point, one of the best things to do in St. Thomas

700 feet above St. Thomas Harbor is where you’ll find Paradise Point where you can enjoy stunning views with a drink in hand and browse fun souvenir shops.

The tram ride takes less than 10 minutes and you can access the Skyride just across the street from Havensight Mall.

Their open air restaurant is taste at Paradise Point and you don’t need to make reservations here. PRIME is their other restaurant that’s only open for dinner and one of the best steakhouses on the island.

2. Take in the View from Drake’s Seat

aerial view of Magens Bay from Drake's Seat

Drake’s Seat is one of the most popular viewpoints on St. Thomas and if you take an island tour, you’ll likely stop here for a photo opp. It overlooks Magens Bay which is commonly named one of the best beaches in the world.

If you aren’t taking an island tour, then you can arrange for a taxi to bring you up to Drake’s Seat – though that would be expensive depending on where you’re staying.

The best way to get here if you aren’t visiting on a tour is by taking a rental car and there are a few parking spaces. You’ll want to check the cruise ship schedule before visiting though. It gets very busy when multiple ships are in port.

Be careful when pulling in and out here – driving around the island is already a little nerve-racking and the pullout is along a bend in a major road.

There are no fees or reservations required to visit this beautiful spot!

3. Go Shopping in Charlotte Amalie

shops lining the streets of Charlotte Amalie

Shopping is one of the most popular activities in St. Thomas as each person is allowed to bring $1,600 worth of duty-free purchases back to the US.

Havensight Shopping Mall and Main Street (Dronningens Gade) in downtown Charlotte Amalie are the most popular spots for shopping. If you’re looking for high-end stores then head to Yacht Haven Grand.

My family and I used to love walking through the stores and window shopping at Yacht Haven Grand.

Crown Bay Center is a newer option for shopping and if you’re looking for souvenirs, then you can also pick those up at Paradise Point or Mountain Top.

4. Learn Pirate History at the Pirates Treasure Museum

telescope laying on a leatherbound book

The Caribbean islands have a long history with pirates and St. Thomas is no different. If you’re interested in learning more about this history, then Pirates Treasure is a must-visit.

You can see authentic artifacts from discoveries made by Odyssey Marine Exploration, and they also highlight various Virgin Islands shipwrecks and artifacts.

The exhibits are also interactive, which makes this museum tons of fun for the entire family. Just note that they also follow the cruise ship schedule so they aren’t always open.

5. Check Out Fort Christian

girl standing in front of large fort experiencing some of the best things to do in St. Thomas

This is actually a National Historic Site that’s managed by the National Park Service. The fort is currently being restored but you can visit on weekdays between 8:30 – 4:30.

The original fort was built by explorers from Denmark and construction of the outer walls and tower was completed by 1676. It was used by military forces until the 1870s, when it became the headquarters for the police of the Virgin Islands.

Much of the original structure was demolished and what you see today was built in the last 150 years. There is a museum here where you can learn more about the history of the Virgin Islands.

Many of the food tours meet here and walking tours will cover the history as well so if you are interested in that, consider joining a guided tour.

6. Go on a Food Tour

girl holding pate, also known as meat pie

Speaking of food tours, they are one of the best activities in St. Thomas as well! Tyler and I did one on our honeymoon and absolutely loved it.

On these walking tours, you’ll stop at around 5 different restaurants where you’ll get to try preselected items from the menu. Typically a painkiller or bushwhacker is included in your ticket as well.

You’ll sample island specialties like fungi, callaloo soup, conch fritters, or pate depending on which tour you take.

Not only do you get to try local foods, but you also learn a ton about the history of the islands from your knowledgeable guide.

Taking a food tour in St. Thomas is one of the best ways to learn more about the local culture and history!

7. Climb the 99 Steps

the famous 99 steps in Charlotte Amalie with tropical plants lining both sides

The 99 Steps is probably one of the most iconic attractions in St. Thomas as it’s a very popular photo spot but it’s also full of history.

When the Danish came to the island, they built this staircase between streets as a better way to get around the Charlotte Amalie because the terrain was so hilly.

The bricks were brought over in Danish ships so it’s amazing to think about how long they’ve been there and how many people have passed over those streets since. You’re walking in the footsteps of pirates!

Fun fact – there are actually 103 steps, not 99.

8. Head to Mountain Top

inside of Mountain Top, one of the most popular souvenir shops and best things to do in St. Thomas

If you want some souvenirs to take home, then Mountain Top is a great place to stop in since they have the largest duty-free gift shop on the island.

They also have a fantastic view since the store is located 1200′ above Magens Bay. Their other claim to fame is their “famous banana daiquiri,” though some people could take it or leave it.

I would recommend only coming here if you’re really interested in souvenir shops otherwise, Drake’s Seat has stunning views for free.

9. Explore Phantasea Tropical Botanical Gardens

green tropical plants

I don’t know about you, but I love visiting a good botanical garden when I’m traveling. Phantasea Tropical Botanical Gardens opened in 2015 and people have been enjoying them ever since.

The gardens are an oasis as most of the area is shaded and there is typically always a nice breeze flowing. It’s located on a hillside so there are lots of stairs – just beware if you have mobility issues.

There are nice bathrooms here and entrance is only $10 for adults. It’s just down the road from Drake’s Seat so I highly recommend combining the two if you are out this way.

10. Kayak Through the Mangroves

man and woman standing in front of natural blowhole by the ocean

One of my all-time favorite things to do in St. Thomas. Hands down, no questions asked. This is one thing that my husband and I still talk about today and a great day trip on the island.

Taking a tour with Virgin Islands Ecotours is amazing, not only because of the beautiful sights but because of everything you learn from the amazing guides. It’s by far one of the best St. Thomas tours .

We went for their longest tour – the kayak, hike, & snorkel tour with a picnic lunch – and I only recommend doing this if you are in decent shape. We were EXHAUSTED by the time we got done.

As you paddle out through the mangrove lagoon to Cas Cay, you watch for stingrays in the shallow water. You’ll stop along the way to see a blowhole and tide pools filled with ocean life.

We hiked and learned more about Cas Cay and the plants here then had lunch with lots of hermit crabs scurrying around.

The last part of the tour is snorkeling along the mangroves and we saw so much diverse marine life! Tropical fish, a barracuda, lobster, sea urchin, sting ray, and so much more.

They do have an option for a shorter kayak and snorkel tour in case you are short on time. I can’t recommend this tour enough though!

This is one of the most beautiful places to go kayaking in St. Thomas so I highly recommend going with VI Ecotours.

🌊 Check prices and availability for the Kayak, Hike, & Snorkel Tour. 🌊

11. Explore Coral World Ocean Park

underwater observatory tower at Coral World, one of the top St. Thomas attractions

Coral World is such a fun stop for anyone who loves animals and wants to learn more about them. They are also accredited by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums so you can feel good about visiting.

They are dedicated to conservation and educating others about how they can help preserve marine life. Take your time to walk around and see all the exhibits – we loved the turtle pool, shark shallows, and underwater observatory tower.

We also really enjoyed going to some of their free presentations. The sea lion one was especially memorable. They also have paid add-on experiences that look amazing.

Coral World is right next to Coki Beach so we rented snorkeling gear from a little stand on the way to the beach and hung out on the beach after Coral World.

I’ve stayed at Margaritaville – one of the best places to stay in St. Thomas – a couple of times now and it’s a quick walk from Coral World and Coki Beach.

12. Lounge on the Beautiful St. Thomas Beaches

rocky beach with great snorkeling

Unpopular Opinion: Magens Bay is not the best beach in St. Thomas .

If you need lots of amenities like family bathrooms, a large bar or restaurant, and water sports rentals then Magens Bay might be for you. It is very crowded though and they charge $5 for entrance. The water is also very calm here if you have small kids.

We prefer quieter beaches with less people, so we love Coki Beach. There are still a few shops plus a restaurant and bar here. However, I’ve been told by multiple people not to visit this beach after dark.

Other popular beaches are Lindquist Beach (fee required), Hull Bay, and Brewers Bay. You will need to arrange pick up from these beaches if you take a taxi here!

13. Visit Water Island

tropical beach on Water Island

Water Island is a fun day trip from St. Thomas and is where you should go for a super laid-back beach day. As a residential island with no hotels, it’s a true island escape.

You can easily get there on a 10 minute ferry ride or take the paddleboat tour across the harbor. It’s famous for Honeymoon Beach but you can rent a golf cart and explore the entire island if you want.

Other things to do on Water Island include checking out Dinghy’s Beach Bar, visiting Limestone Beach, or shopping at The Crossing.

14. Take the Ferry to St. John

crystal clear water with people swimming and small islands in the distance

If you want to explore Virgin Islands National Park or check out a different island in the USVI, then take a day trip over to St. John. The ferry system is easy to navigate and leaves from Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook.

We’ve always taken the ferry from Red Hook and it’s only about 20 minutes over to Cruz Bay. The National Park is great for hiking and has some of the most beautiful beaches like Cinnamon Bay and Trunk Bay.

Check out the underwater snorkeling trail at Trunk Bay – Tyler and I saw a shark here on our honeymoon!

The Cinnamon Bay hiking trail was really neat too. You can take a taxi from Cruz Bay out to the trailhead.

After you’re done adventuring, come back to Mongoose Junction where you can check out the shops and grab something to eat. St. John Brewers is a must-visit for drinks and apps.

15. Island Hop in the British Virgin Islands

desert landscape with rocky coastline and boats anchored nearby

One of my other favorite things to do in St. Thomas. There are multiple tours that take you out to the British Virgin Islands but my favorite is the one that goes to The Baths and then White Bay on Jost Van Dyke.

Hike through the Baths among all the massive boulders with gorgeous views of the surrounding coastline and boats in the water. You’ll learn all about the history of the area too.

The hike leads you down to Devils Bay where you can grab a drink at the bar and swim as the waves splash around the boulders dotting the beach.

You’ll load back up on the boat and head over to White Bay where you can visit the famous Soggy Dollar Bar.

There’s no dock at White Bay, so all the boats anchor out away from the beach and you swim a short distance to shore. Hence “soggy dollars.”

Typically the captain does pass around a dry bag for anything you don’t want to get wet. You’ll have time to check out the bars, grab some food, and order a painkiller.

We had an amazing shrimp quesadilla from One Love Bar and Grill but according to Google they are temporarily closed.

This is just a fun day with the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation and one of the best boat tours in St. Thomas !

16. Go Deep Sea Fishing

Fishing rod with sunset and islands in the background. One of the best things to do in St. Thomas.

Both times I’ve been fishing in St. Thomas have been memorable – the first my dad caught a huge Blue Marlin and the second I caught a big African Pompano.

The best time to go fishing all depends on what you want to catch – there’s something running all year. You can catch anything from Mahi-Mahi to Wahoo and Sailfish to Marlins.

If you just want a taste of what it’s like then go with a half-day tour to get a feel for it. Make sure to take motion sickness pills if this is an issue for you!

The captain has typically packed a cooler with drinks but you can also bring your own.

If you catch any fish that are good to eat then they’ll typically filet it for you and you can take it to a restaurant that will cook your catch. The crew typically has good recommendations for those.

17. Search for Tropical Fish on a Snorkeling Tour

girl holding a sea urchin underwater with snorkel mask on

There are so many great options for snorkeling tours in St. Thomas ! Some will take you to nearby Buck Island, some around St. John, and others will stick closer to St. Thomas.

In most places, you’ll see coral and all kinds of tropical fish and some take you to bays where you’re more likely to see sea turtles.

My personal favorite snorkeling tour was the Kayak, Hike, & Snorkel Tour with VI Ecotours but I’ve been on ones around St. John as well that were great.

After you’re done snorkeling, most of the tours will open the bar on the boat and your ticket includes unlimited drinks and you can enjoy lying in the sun on the boat.

18. Enjoy a Sunset Cruise

view of cliffs on the coastline at sunset

Ending your day in St. Thomas with a sunset cruise is nothing short of magical.

Picture yourself sailing across the calm Caribbean waters, watching the sun slowly dip below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of gold, purple, and pink. You’ll feel a gentle breeze on your skin and the soothing rhythm of the waves.

Some cruises offer light snacks or even full meals in addition to the open bar. It’s a perfect way to unwind after a day of adventures and truly absorb the breathtaking beauty of the island.

19. Head Underwater and Go Scuba Diving

two scuba divers exploring a reef

Another way to enjoy the underwater world is by going scuba diving here in St. Thomas. There are options for complete beginners as well as experienced divers.

The St. Thomas Dive Center, JJ Divers St. Thomas, and Aqua Marine Dive Center are all highly rated. Some of the most popular dive spots are Coki Beach, Congo Cay, and Cow and Calf Rocks.

Since the Virgin Islands were created from volcanic activity, this is a great area to dive with so much to see.

girl zip lining over the trees

For a little change of perspective, why not take to the treetops with a zipline adventure at Tree Limin’ Extreme?

As one of St. Thomas’s top attractions, this exhilarating course offers a bird’s eye view of the island’s forests and stunning coastline.

If this is your first time, it’s normal to be nervous, but don’t worry. You’ll be strapped into safety harnesses and guided by experienced instructors the whole time.

Restaurants in St. Thomas

There are plenty of great restaurants on St. Thomas to enjoy between your adventures. Here are just a few suggestions to get you started!

The Tap & Still

cheeseburger on top of aluminum foil

Tyler and I loved Tap & Still so much that we went twice! This is a no-frills sports bar with four different locations where you can get an amazing chicken sandwich and a bag of fries. Their burgers are also really good if you’re craving one.

We went to the Red Hook location but you can also visit them in Havensight or Cruz Bay over on St. John. Their other location is in Sint Maarten.

To order, you fill out a checklist on a piece of paper where you choose the type of sandwich, what you want on it, and your sides. Service is typically pretty quick too.

They get super busy especially on the weekends so you’ll wanna get there early! They’re right on the harbor at Red Hook so it’s a really cool vibe.

Lattes in Paradise

bagel breakfast sandwich with coffee

This is the perfect breakfast spot in Red Hook and if you’re leaving for a full day tour that doesn’t include breakfast, I highly recommend picking up something quick here.

It’s counter service only and the restaurant is open-air on the second level looking over the bay. There are a few tables available on the deck outside in case you want to sit and enjoy your breakfast.

On the menu, you’ll find all kinds of coffees, teas, and smoothies plus plenty of other options like sodas and water. Their breakfast sandwiches are delicious but they also have breakfast burritos, quiche, and bagels.

Greengos Caribbean Cantina

Greengos is a lively spot in Charlotte Amalie known for its delicious Mexican food – they even make their tortillas fresh in-house daily.

Their name is a play on words but signifies their commitment to “going green.” Their takeout food is packaged in recycled materials and all their glassware is made from recycled glass.

They are also well known for their selection of tequilas and they have an extensive margarita list. People love the Cantina Bowl and Shrimp & Chorizo Bowls but they have other great options like burritos and enchiladas.

It’s a busy place in town so be prepared to wait if you hit it right at lunch or dinner time!

Glady’s Cafe

calalloo soup, fungi, and a hushpuppy

We went to Glady’s Cafe on our food tour and it’s where we got to try some of the local cuisine – fungi, callaloo soup, and conch fritters. They have lots of other options if you want to try Caribbean cuisine.

It’s a cute space tucked in a side street of Charlotte Amalie and they’ve been open for over 30 years so you know it’s good food.

They serve breakfast and lunch and are known for their large portions and friendly service.

key lime pie with whipped cream

Head to the Old Stone Farm House if you’re celebrating something special or if you want an upscale meal. You’ll want to make reservations here if you go.

The restaurant is located at Mahogany Run Golf Course inside a 200-year-old restored plantation field house. It’s a romantic setting, so perfect for couples – we went on our honeymoon.

They serve dinner and Sunday Brunch but on the dinner menu you’ll find things like yellowfin tuna, filet mignon, and beef short ribs.

16 Exciting Things To Do In St. Thomas to Explore The Island

Things to do in St. Thomas

Looking for an island getaway that combines stunning beaches with a warm, unique culture and history?

St. Thomas is an island in the Caribbean perfect for travelers looking to explore the region for the first time. It’s an especially easy island getaway for Americans. As an overseas dependency of the United States of America (USA), no passports are required by US citizens for entry and exit, and the official currency is the U.S. dollar.

If you’ve just booked a Caribbean getaway here’s a list of things to do in St. Thomas to consider.

1. Spend The Day At Magens Bay

One of the exciting things to do in St Thomas is visiting the spectacular beaches. Located in the Northern region of the island, Magens Bay Beach is appreciated for its calm and turquoise waters. Active travelers will love the hiking trail, which is approximately one mile to the beach and is developed and well-maintained.

2. Hike To Mermaid’s Chair

Are you looking for more hikes? Then check out Mermaid’s Chair, one of the unique spots in St Thomas. Mermaid’s Chair is situated on the West Coast near the capital city of Charlotte Amalie. There is also an area with fantastic turquoise waters ideal for swimming and relaxing.

The admission fee is $10 for tourists, and free for residents.

6. Climb 99 Steps

Surrounded by several species of tropical flora and fauna, climbing 99 Steps is always at the top of people’s things to do in St. Thomas lists!

These steps were constructed from bricks brought to the island from Denmark and are actually 103 steps in total and not 99 according to its name. At the top of the steps is Blackbeard’s Castle which was constructed in 1679 by the Danish to protect the harbor as well as Fort Christian.

This tiny island comprises only 135 acres and is accessible via a short boat ride from the capital city, Charlotte Amalie. Hassel Island was previously connected to mainland St Thomas but was separated by the Danish Government in 1860.

The island is perfect for history enthusiasts as several historical ruins, such as Fort Willoughby, Fort Frederik, and Fort Shipley, remain to date.

9. Swim With Sea Turtles At Brewers Bay

Exploring one beach is not enough when visiting the island of St Thomas. In addition to Magens Bay Beach, Brewers Bay is another excellent option to consider. Brewers Bay beach is not as famous as Magens Bay Beach and ideal for those seeking a quieter beach experience.

The water is beautiful crystal blue, and its located near the University, so it is accessible via public transportation. There are changing rooms, showers on the premises, and local food trucks.

Brewers Bay is exceptional for snorkeling and swimming with sea turtles, but its location near the airport means that visitors will hear the constant departure and arrival of aircraft.

16. Use it as A Base For U.S. Virgin Island-Hopping

When’s The Best Time to Visit St. Thomas?

Things to do in St. Thomas

The island is truly a gem, and there are numerous exciting things to do in St. Thomas to make your stay unforgettable. But when’s the best time to visit the islands and region?

While high temperatures and daily sunshine are the norm, St. Thomas and The Virgin Islands are in the main Hurricane Path. It’s best to avoid traveling in between June and November, but if you must purchase travel insurance for your vacation.

Prices and crowds will peak in the high season from Mid December to Mid-April when vacationers are looking to escape from cold weather in their part of the world. But it’s also the most lively time on the island when all the establishments are open, and the events take place. So warning, if you book a trip during the off-season to avoid crowds and high prices, do your research to ensure all the best things to do in St. Thomas will be open.

19 Fun Things to Do in St. Thomas

By Author Laura Longwell

Posted on Last updated: January 6, 2024

Just a few hours from the East Coast, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, is an ideal Caribbean getaway. The water is brilliant blue, the beaches are outstanding, and there is an incredible variety of good food options. From historic sites to dazzling views to activities that will get your adrenaline pumping, there are lots of fun things to do in St. Thomas.

We’ve visited St. Thomas several times in the past but always on cruises. We recently had the chance to explore the island in depth to see more of what there is to do in this beautiful place. Here’s a look at some of our favorites.

See the view at Mountain Top

Hand holding a yellow cup labeled

One of the most popular St. Thomas attractions, especially for cruise ship passengers, Mountain Top has several claims to fame. At 2,100 feet above sea level on the top of St. Peter Mountain, its most notable feature is the stunning views it provides. Visitors can see not only Magens Bay beach below, but views extend all the way to Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands.

Mountain Top also bills itself as the island’s largest gift shop. There are plenty of souvenir t-shirts, beach bags, and more, often at lower prices than other places on the island.

While you’re browsing and taking in the view, grab a banana daiquiri from the bar where it was invented in the 1950s. Giant signs overhead proclaim that over 7 million have been sold here, though it’s surely more than that.

Visit Emancipation Garden

Statue of a man blowing a conch shell in a park with benches and trees.

Emancipation Garden commemorates the freeing of enslaved people in St. Thomas by the Danish governor on July 3, 1848, 15 years before the Emancipation Proclamation did the same in the US. A commemorative plaque and a bronze bust of a newly freed man blowing a conch shell mark the location, along with a small replica of the Liberty Bell.

Located near Charlotte Amalie’s waterfront, the park provides a shady place to take a break near some of the popular St. Thomas sites. Throughout the year, it is the location of special events, including the inauguration ceremonies for the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Emancipation Day festivities. At Christmas, the park is filled with lights and decorations, making it a must see during the holidays.

Climb the 99 Steps

Staircase with palm trees on one side.

The hills rising around Charlotte Amalie are full of steep streets. Perhaps the most visited by tourists are the 99 Steps, which were built by the Danes in the 1700s.

Actually clocking in at 103 steps, the 99 Steps are one of the most well-known landmarks in St. Thomas. Not far from historic Fort Christian and the Emancipation Garden, they lead visitors to a nice view of the island and close to the foot of Blackbeard’s Castle, though that National Historic Landmark is currently closed.

Explore the bounty at the Pirates Treasure Museum

Red, white, and orange building with four fake canons and a sign for

In its centuries of maritime history, thousands of voyages have started and ended on the shores of St. Thomas and the Virgin Islands, but not all of them have made it safely. Exhibits at the Pirates Treasure Museum include items recovered from nearby shipwrecks and educate visitors about the technology used to find and recover wrecks. There are plenty of engaging stories from survivors of doomed ships and lots of pirate lore to keep you entertained.

Relax at the local beaches

Blue ocean water and a white sand beach with hilly islands in the distance in St. Thomas.

Visiting the island’s stunning beaches is one of the best things to do in St. Thomas. They range from a pristine park with white sand at Lindquist Beach to the tourist favorite Magens Bay Beach , which features rental chairs and a full beach bar and restaurant. Some spots like Coki Beach offer chances for great shore diving, or you can head to Sapphire Beach for snorkeling and gorgeous views. It’s hard to go wrong here.

Go snorkeling

Close up of a sea turtle swimming in the ocean.

Nearly every beach on St. Thomas offers a chance to see something unique just a few yards from shore, so it’s a great place to go snorkeling. Depending on how busy the beaches are and how deep the water is, plant and animal life varies, but there’s almost always something cool from sea urchins and brain coral to sea turtles and stingrays. We have the most flexibility traveling with our own snorkels , but a few of the beaches offer hourly snorkel rental for those who want to explore.

To dive into a bit deeper water, check out some of the catamarans that offer snorkel tours from the island. We went with the VI Cat, which offers several snorkel and beach excursions.

Zip line above the trees

Two-story green and yellow building surrounded by trees and plants.

If you’re looking for a little adventure, head to Tree Limin’ Extreme ziplining, the first zipline park in the Virgin Islands. This experience isn’t for the faint of heart, as you zip up to 35 miles per hour above the trees.

Tree Limin’ has six ziplines and two sky walks that will get your adrenaline pumping and provide incredible views of Magens Bay, Jost van Dyke, Tortola, and beyond. It’s a must do in St. Thomas for kids or anyone looking for a bit of a break from the beach.

See the plants at Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden

Lizard stature surrounded by plants and trees

For over 20 years, the gardens at Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden have been cultivated to showcase orchids, bromeliads, tropical trees, and other Caribbean plants. Now open to the public, the garden educates visitors about the tropical plants and conservation methods.

As you wander through the 2-acre garden, there are lots of places to sit and appreciate the natural beauty. Some of the spots even have views of neighboring Tortola and St. John as well as the cruise ship harbor. With plants blooming all year long, there is no bad time to visit this lush location.

Visit Coral World Ocean Park

Building in the ocean with a white domed second floor and a bridge connecting to land.

Right next to Coki Beach, you’ll find Coral World Ocean Park , an attraction dedicated to showing visitors the exciting world of the ocean. Its signature Underwater Observatory Tower goes 20 feet below the surface, giving people a chance to see sea life in a unique way.

Coral reef tanks and a giant aquarium also allow visitors to Coral World to see sea turtles, sea lions, lots of fish, coral, and sharks. Those interested in getting a closer look can try a sea trek experience–walking on the ocean floor with an oxygen-filled helmet. Note: we never endorse activities that involve interacting with sea life in a way they wouldn’t behave in the wild.

Visit Fort Christian

Exterior of a red building with a clock tower.

One of the most historic attractions in St. Thomas, Fort Christian was first built in the 1670s by Danish Governor Jørgen Iversen. Named after Danish King Christian V, the fort was designed to provide defense for the island.

Over the centuries, the structure and purpose of the fort evolved, and it became police headquarters of the Virgin Islands and a prison. Today, the red and white Gothic revival structure is a National Historic Landmark featuring a museum filled with period furniture and historic documents and photos that tell the story of the island.

See the St. Thomas Synagogue

Gate topped with a lamp and a Star of David outside a synagogue .

The St. Thomas Synagogue —officially named Beracha Veshalom Vegimulth Hasidim, meaning Blessing and Peace and Loving Deeds—is the second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. The congregation started with just nine Sephardic Jewish families and dates from 1796.

The current synagogue was built in 1833 in the same location as previous buildings. On the regular tours, visitors can see its unique historic features, including its domed ceiling with European chandeliers, mahogany pews, and the Menorah, which dates from the 11 th century. Uniquely, the building’s floor is covered in sand, symbolic of the desert where the Moses and the children of Israel wandered for 40 years.

Grab a drink in a parking lot

People sitting at a bar with a large metal shark on the wall.

If you’re wondering what to do in St. Thomas at night, head to Red Hook, which is full of lots of great restaurants and fun places for going out. One of the most unique is Duffy’s Love Shack .

Duffy’s, a fun tiki bar that serves food, is set up in the parking lot of a strip mall right in the heart of downtown. You can eat outside in the parking lot or inside where you’re likely to find bubbles coming down from the ceiling and an animated shark moving around at least some time during your visit. It’s an experience not to be missed.

Explore the underwater world on a SCUBA Dive

Brightly colored coral in the ocean.

Dozens of breathtaking dive sites line the waters off the coast. Whether you’re interested in getting SCUBA certified or are an advanced diver, there are lots of options from beginner’s classes to wreck dives.

We dove off Coki Beach and saw the most colorful coral we’ve seen anywhere in the world along with sharks, sea turtles, eels, and all kinds of fish. The scenery is gorgeous and the water is warm, so it’s hard to ask for anything more.

Shop in Charlotte Amalie

Green exterior of a strip mall of shops lined with plants and palm trees

Some of the most popular places for visitors to shop in St. Thomas are just outside the cruise port at the Havensight Mall in Charlotte Amalie. There are lots of choices for jewelry and watches, souvenirs, duty free alcohol, designer goods, and more.

Have a pint at Leatherback Brewing

Interior of Leatherback Brewery tasting room with a bar, tables, and chairs.

To sample some beer from the islands , head to Leatherback Brewing Company . Brewed with Caribbean grown ingredients, the beers at Leatherback are made both in St. Croix and in St. Thomas at Havensight Plaza not far from the cruise port.

A celebration of life in the Caribbean, the signature beers are Beach Life, Island Life, and Reef Life. With these beers and a selection of other ales, IPAs, hefeweizens, and more, Leatherback has a broad offering to please a range of palates.

See Frederick Lutheran Church

Exterior of a brick church with a red door and windows.

Founded in 1666, the Frederick Lutheran Church is one of the oldest institutions on the island. The current building, which was dedicated in 1793, has survived disasters and been repaired and remodeled over the years. It remains one of the oldest continually used structures in St. Thomas and is worth a stop when you’re downtown.

Take the Skyride to Paradise Point

Cable cars going uphill from a two-story building.

Rising to 700 feet above sea level, the Skyride to Paradise Point provides sweeping views of the island. It’s a beautiful place to visit any time but is especially popular at sunset.

At the top, visitors will find the famous Bailey’s Bushwacker cocktail as well as PRIME at Paradise Point , a steakhouse that is one of the top restaurants on the island.

Grab a coffee at Virgin Islands Coffee Roaster

White circular sign with a bird:

Virgin Islands Coffee Roasters is a small batch artisanal coffee roaster whose coffee ensures a delicious drink (and caffeine fix!) across the island. Their beans are roasted and packaged on St. Thomas for maximum freshness.

Virgin Islands Coffee Roasters has a cafe right near the cruise port where visitors can try their coffee alongside snacks like ice cream and Belgian waffles and other drinks like fruit teas and locally brewed coffee beers. If you can’t make it to the cafe, their beans are used at coffee shops and restaurants all over the island, so look out for their sign.

Visit Water Island

Island filled with palm trees beside the blue ocean.

A 7-minute ferry ride from the Crown Bay Marina will take you to the shores of Water Island, the smallest of the US Virgin Islands. Much smaller (and generally quieter) than St. Thomas, a visit here feels like a getaway from your vacation.

Rent a chair, grab a cocktail from Dinghy’s Beach Bar , and settle in for a relaxing day among the waves. Sea turtles feed on sea grass just a few yards from shore, so bring your snorkel to watch them in their natural habitat.

What to See and Do in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.

st thomas virgin islands tourist attractions

The duty-free shopping capital of the Caribbean features block after block (and alley after alley) of jewelry stores selling precious gems, watches, and more at bargain prices. You’ll also find the usual souvenir shops, and there’s a market along the waterfront with vendors selling jewelry, clothing, and knockoff designer handbags.

The island’s busiest road (Veteran’s Drive) separates downtown from the harbor, so this isn’t where you want to go for waterfront dining and drinking. However, the city’s narrow streets -- most with their original Danish names -- are home to a number of small, specialty restaurants, often housed in historic former warehouses and other buildings.

Historic sites include Fort Christian , which may or may not be open for tours (it’s currently undergoing renovations); the 99 Steps, built by the Danes in the mid-1700s using bricks transported as ships' ballast, and Blackbeard’s Castle . You can also catch a ferry from here to Cruz Bay, St. John, or a seaplane to St. Croix.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Red Hook

Stellig2008 via Flikr

Located on the southeast coast of St. Thomas , Red Hook is known for its ferry to nearby St. John (20 minutes away, $6 each way for adults) and, increasingly, for its dining and nightlife scene. Steps from the ferry terminal are an array of restaurants and bars, some on the waterfront (Fish Tails, Big Bambooz, Molly Malone's ), others in strip malls (the XO Bistro martini bar, Fat Boys, and the walk-up Taco Hell stand). One of the best, Duffy's Love Shack, sits in the middle of a parking lot but has a popular dance party and free well drinks for the ladies on Wednesday nights.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Frenchtown

© Bella Blu

This historic port community just west of Charlotte Amalie is home to the island’s fresh-fish market and a marina where you can charter a yacht or join a kayaking excursion to nearby Hassell Island. There’s also a cluster of good-to-great restaurants here, including the Hook, Line, and Sinker (facing the marina, seafood-heavy menu, obviously), Bella Blu (oddly, Austrian cuisine -- try the schnitzel!), Pie Whole (outstanding thin-crust pizza, bruschetta, and specialty beers from around the world), Looney Bien , a Mexican place for reasonably priced tacos and burritos and two varieties of homemade sangria, and Craig and Sally's , where the humble facade gives way to a pretty dining room and fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Havensight

If you come off a cruise ship docked in Charlotte Amalie, Havensight is the first thing you’ll see -- a purpose-built waterfront mall with all the usual souvenir shops, jewelry stores, and touristy bars like Hooters and Señor Frogs . There are a few standouts, however: the Pirates Chest sells genuine coins and other artifacts from shipwrecks around the world, many brought to the surface by store owner Sean Loughman. Mojo’s is one of the better watering holes you’ll find in a shopping center parking lot, with swings to sit on, decent drink specials at the big round bar, and rock music on the sound system.

The Shipwreck Tavern claims to have the island’s best burger: some dispute that, but their huge charcoal-grilled burgers are very good -- and big enough to split. Next door is the Al Cohen liquor store, which has an excellent selection of duty-free spirits, wine, and beer, including the local Cruzan rum for less than $8 a liter (K-Mart, also in Havensight, is another option for low-cost alcohol and other shopping).

The base of the Paradise Point sky ride also is in Havensight: cable cars take you from sea level to the 800-foot summit of Paradise Point for spectacular views (weather permitting, of course) of Charlotte Amalie, its harbor, Hassell Island, Water Island, and -- on a good day -- as far off as Puerto Rico . A ride on the ferris wheel at the summit is included in the price of your ticket, and there’s also a bar/restaurant on top that’s famous for its Bailey’s Bushwacker, a frozen drink made with Irish cream liqueur.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Yacht Haven

© Fat Turtle

Yachts (and mega-yachts) dock here for port calls at Charlotte Amalie, disgorging their well-heeled passengers into Yacht Haven Grande , a warren of upscale shops selling designer goods from the likes of Bulgari, Coach, and Gucci. At nights, the blue dock lights lure visitors down to gawk at the yachts and imbibe at the Fat Turtle , where the drinks and dining are surprisingly affordable despite the tony address. The Friday night dance party here is one of the best on the island, and there’s also live music on many nights.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Water Island

Joyosity via Flikr

Tiny (about 500 acres) Water Island has just 120 year-round residents and is very low-key, but this “fourth Virgin Island” is just 10 minutes away from St. Thomas by ferry ($3 one-way), so it’s a popular day-tripper’s destination. You can rent a bike or walk around the island, lay on a beach, kayak or snorkel, or explore the ruins of old military facilities. Stop at Joe's Beach Bar for a drink. If you want to stay overnight, your best option is to rent a tent-cottage at the island's campground , near Honeymoon Beach. The Water Island ferry is in the Crown Bay Marina , a short walk from St. Thomas' Crown Bay cruise-ship dock.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Hassell Island

Historic Hassell Island is tantalizingly close to Charlotte Amalie but for many years has been more-or-less inaccessible to visitors. However, the U.S. National Park Service is in the process of restoring a former boat-repair building, several forts, and the remnants of a leper’s hospital on the island. Eventually there will be ferry service to Hassell Island, but for now, you can visit by way of a kayak excursion that leaves from Frenchtown and includes a guided tour and hike plus snorkeling on the quiet, windward side of the island.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Magen’s Bay Beach

U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism

One of the most famous beaches in the Caribbean, Magen’s Bay is a fabulous stretch of sand on a U-shaped bay on St. Thomas’s north side. Like all beaches on the island, Magen’s Bay is public, but you’ll have to pay a fee to reach the shoreline -- as one resident put it, you’re basically paying to walk through the parking lot. Most visitors agree that it’s worth the small charge, however, as long as you don’t come when a bunch of cruise ships are in port, when this popular strand can get unbearably crowded. Better then to opt for another spot to spread out your beach towels, such as quiet Hull Bay, also on the island’s north side.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Coral World Ocean Park

Coral World Ocean Park

Located between Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook on St. Thomas’ Route 38, Coral World Ocean Park is a stand-alone attraction focused on marine life. Basic admission includes access to the park’s Undersea Observatory and other exhibits; add-ons include Sea Trek , Snuba , shark, turtle, and sea-lion encounter programs, a boat tour aboard the M/V Nautilus, and parasailing. Packages are available from St. Thomas hotels and cruise ships and include transportation, or you can take a cab. Swimming and sunning at nearby Coki Beach is also an option.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Buck Island Reef National Wildlife Refuge

Karl Callwood

Located two miles off the south coast of St. Thomas, the Buck Island Reef National Wildlife Refuge is home to the historic Buck Island Lighthouse, which presides over 45-acre Buck Island. There are hiking trails on the island, but the lighthouse is closed to the public, a large rat population keeps the seabirds away. The main attraction here isn't the island itself but the surrounding, wreck-strewn reefs, which are a popular destination for divers and snorkelers .

Standing proudly in the center of St. Thomas , Skytsborg Tower provides its visitors a 360-degree angle view of Charlotte Amalie and its harbor. This 40-feet-tall tower erected in the late 1600s served as a vantage point for soldiers to spot enemy ships. Legend has it that in the 18th century, Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, used the tower as a lookout point. Nowadays, tourists from all over can climb the tower and marvel at the majestic view of the harbor. Afterward, take a dip into one of the three swimming pools of the estate.

View of Magens Bay viewed from Drake’s Seat.

You’ll never run out of sightseeing opportunities at St. Thomas . One of the spots you and the entire family shouldn’t miss is Drake’s Seat . Situated on top of Skyline Drive, this lookout point is named after Sir Francis Drake , the first English explorer who circumnavigated the globe in a single expedition . Local folklore claims that this was where Sir Francis went to look out for the enemy ships of the Spanish Fleet. Whether this story is true or not is still unclear. However, what is certain, is the stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

9. Enjoy More Underwater Fun at St. Thomas Scuba Diving Spots

Two men in scuba diving equipment diving near a ship wreckage, one of the fun things to do in St Thomas.

We’ve already mentioned Coki Beach as one of the top St. Thomas scuba diving spots on the island. But, there’s still a plethora of other locations to enjoy more underwater fun.

Located off the south side of St. Thomas , Cow and Calf is a popular site for beginner and intermediate divers with its shallow depth and calm waters. The area offers divers’ canyons, ridges, swim-throughs, tunnels, and arches. Another great spot for beginners is the relatively shallow waters of Ledges of Little St James. This site is popular for snorkeling and night diving, as well.

Meanwhile, you’ll find Congo Cay and its dramatic ridges and rock formations on the north side of the island. The area’s abundance of colorful coral and pelagic creatures makes it a popular spot for underwater photography, so don’t forget to bring your best underwater camera ! Note that the area is more geared towards advanced divers due to its brisk currents. As such, novice divers may want to avoid this spot.

10. Tour Nearby Islands

A romantic Caribbean getaway for couples isn’t complete without catching at least one of the amazing sunsets. Located on the East End , Secret Harbor is one of the smaller St. Thomas beaches and is much less crowded than Magens Bay and Coki Point Beach . As such, it’s a great place for those looking for uninterrupted romantic moments. Soft white sand, swaying palm trees, and crystal clear waters await you and your partner on this beach .

What makes Secret Harbor one of the top romantic spots, though, is its breathtaking view of the sunset. Enjoy a romantic meal and cocktail at one of the restaurants and bars at the Secret Harbor Beach Resort to complete the experience.

Unusual Things to Do in St. Thomas

18. explore the historic sites of hassel island.

Abandoned ruins of a building at Hassel Island.

Hassel Island is an often overlooked part of the U.S Virgin Islands, a small isle nestled south of Saint Thomas . It was once part of the mainland but was separated in the 1860s by the Danish government to improve the water circulation of the Charlotte Amalie harbor. History buffs can learn all about the island’s rich history by exploring ruins of sites and structures dating back to the 17th century. Ruins include remnants of shipping and coal stations and the oldest steam-powered marine railway in the Western Hemisphere. Here, you can find the ruins of military quarters and barracks used during wars.

19. Step into the Wilderness at Buck Island

If you want to unplug from the modern-day, head over to the Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge. Situated two miles south of St. Thomas , this 45-acre uninhabited island is covered in rocky cliffs and sheltered coves with grasslands teeming with shrubs and trees. The island is home to several creatures, including Caribbean-native reptiles. It also serves as a safe nesting habitat for different migratory birds. Exploring the island is certainly one of the best things to do in St. Thomas for nature enthusiasts. The only sign of civilization you will encounter is the historic Buck Island Lighthouse.

20. Skyride to Paradise Point

While these alone don’t seem like one of the unique things to do in St. Thomas , getting there, however, is a one-of-a-kind experience in itself. To get there, you will need to hop on a tram that will whisk you and 23 other passengers up 700 feet above the hustle and bustle of Charlotte Amalie . This seven-minute ride to paradise offers panoramic sights with no shortage of photo opportunities, so don’t forget to bring your camera and selfie stick .

Climbing a bunch of steps doesn’t sound like the most exciting thing to do. However, this steep flight of steps is one of the most popular landmarks on the island . Located in Downtown Charlotte Amalie , the Danes built these steps in the mid-1700s. Made of bricks bought over from Denmark, the steps were built to make navigating the island’s steep hills easier. Nowadays, the staircase, which actually consists of 103 steps, is among the top attractions of St. Thomas . Flowers and other tropical plants surround both sides, so you can enjoy a scenic stroll and capture colorful photos when catching your breath during the climb. Blackbeard’s castle , along with stunning views, awaits you atop the staircase.

23. Travel to the Past at Fort Christian

Since its erection over 300 years ago, it has served as a military base, a town center, and a police headquarters. Today, it’s home to the St. Thomas Museum, which holds exhibits on the history of the US Virgin Islands . What’s more, there’s a natural history section with local flora and fauna on display. Visitors can browse the museum’s collection of furniture from the Dano-Norwegian period and an art gallery. Take in Charlotte Amalie ’s panoramic views from the fort’s roof.

As the only golf course on St. Thomas island, you shouldn’t miss the chance of hitting a hole-in-one at the Mahogany Run Golf Course . The golf course, spanning almost 100 acres, offers challenging courses, including the infamous Devil’s Triangle that’s perched atop a 200-feet cliff. Conquer the exciting greens while surrounded by tropical foliage and amazing wildlife, and a stunning view of the Atlantic ocean.

15 Best St. Thomas and USVI Attractions

The best St. Thomas tourist attractions include Magen’s Bay beach and two of the largest duty-free shopping districts in the Caribbean.

St. Thomas is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the Caribbean. It is a common stop on eastern Caribbean cruises.

More than 2 million people visit the U.S. Virgin Islands by cruise and another 700,000 visit for stayover vacations each year. Nearly all of the cruise travelers go to St. Thomas.

St. Thomas Tourist Attractions

1) havensight mall.

The duty-free Havensight Mall, which sits right beside the cruise docks, has expanded dramatically in recent years. It appears to have overtaken Charlotte Amalie itself as the hot spot for shopping on St. Thomas.

The outdoor mall is a series of long buildings packed with jewelry and clothing shops as well as a handful of restaurants. More shops and restaurants have grown up near the mall. Visitors also will find the St. Thomas Skyride there.

2) St. Thomas Skyride

The growth of the Havensight Mall area has led to a decline in Main Street. But it still is an important duty-free shopping area, especially for jewelry and electronics.

Shoppers may want to combine the visit to Main Street with tours of nearby historical sites including Fort Christian, Blackbeard’s Castle and Government Hill.

4) Fort Christian

A visit to Charlotte Amalie also is a chance to see Fort Christian, the oldest structure in the Virgin Islands. It dates back to 1762 and the original Dutch colony.

The fort is now a museum with exhibits on the human and natural history of the Virgin Islands. It sits between Emancipation Garden and Veterans Drive.

5) More Charlotte Amalie

Skytsborg tower, also known as Blackbeard’s Castle, was once used as a lookout to identify enemy ships entering the harbor. The five-acre site in Charlotte Amalie includes the lookout tower, historical villas and 14-foot bronze sculpture of the pirate Blackbeard.

The nearby Government Hill has sites including Government House, 99 Steps, Crown House and Seven Arches Museum.

6) Magen’s Bay Beach

The one-mile-long Magen’s Bay beach is often ranked among the best beaches in the Caribbean because of its scenic views and calm waters.

Whether or not the ranking is justified, Magen’s Bay on the north coast is the most popular beach to visit for cruise visitors to St. Thomas. It is a 15-minute drive from Havensight Mall via taxi or excursion bus.

Other St. Thomas beaches include Coki Beach, Lindquist Beach and Bolongo Bay.

7) Coral World Ocean Park

Nature lovers may want to visit the Coral World Marine Park and Observatory at Coki Point on the northeast coast of St. Thomas.

It has a tropical nature trail, marine gardens aquarium, coral reef tank and an underwater observatory. $$

St. Croix Tourist Attractions

8) buck island marine park.

The 704 acres of Buck Island near St. Croix and the surrounding waters were established as a U.S. national park in 1961.

It is one of the few fully protected marine parks in the U.S. national park system. Visitors can snorkel the famous underwater trail and view the coral reefs.

9) St. Croix Heritage Trail

The Heritage Trail tour is a 72-mile ride that connects many of the island’s historical and natural sites.

Shopping, dining and more history can be found in the largest towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted.

10) St. Croix Beaches

Popular St. Croix beaches include Cane Baye, Chenay Bay and Coakley Bay.

St. John Tourist Attractions

11) virgin islands national park.

Virgin Islands National Park includes more than 9,500 acres of land on St. John and an underwater reserve that makes up 5,650 acres of the total.

The park is filled with numerous human and natural history experiences including diving, snorkeling and sailing, an underwater trail at Trunk Bay and hiking at the Reef Bay Trail.

12) Beaches

Beaches include Hawksnest Bay, Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay. Bus and car tours also are available.

13) St. John Historical Attractions

St. John historical attractions include the Elaine Ione Sprauve Library and Museum, the Ivan Jadan Museum and the Annaberg Sugar Plantation. Visitors to St. Thomas can take a 20-minute ferry ride to reach St. John.

St. John beaches include Cinnamon Bay, Francis Bay, Francis Bay and Hawksnest.

15) USVI Golf

St. Croix is the place for golf with two 18-hole and one nine-hole courses.

Buccaneer Golf Club is a par 70, 18-hole course encompassing 5,668 yards. Carambola Golf Club was built by Laurance Rockefeller and designed by Robert Trent Jones. The Reef Golf Course is a nine-hole, par-35 course with a driving range.

St. Thomas' Best Attractions above and below Water

Chelle Koster Walton

LAST UPDATED BY Chelle Koster Walton March 27, 2015

St. Thomas gives visitors so many options for spending leisure and recreational days both on land and on (or under) its clear, sparkling waters. This list puts Magens Bay at the top because it is one of the Caribbean’s best beaches, and because the beach is often the first destination of vacationers. So start at the beach to get into the “limin’” mode, as they say here in the U.S. Virgin Islands. From there, use this list as your priority guide for picking the best from all of St. Thomas’ varied and alluring attractions and activities.

Get on and under the water both with a combo kayak and snorkeling tour with Virgin Islands Ecotour . Some of its excursions also include exploring trails and historic sites. The rest of the attractions and activities included here revolve around the manmade, but yet they almost always bring you in contact with the islands’ rich world of flora and fauna or their intriguing history peopled with pirates, sea captains, traders and soldiers. St. Thomas’ past pops up everywhere in downtown Charlotte Amalie, where each building seems to tell a story. Check with the St. Thomas Historical Trust for walking and ferry tours of downtown’s historic sites.

Paradise Point St. Thomas Skyride

Paradise Point St. Thomas Skyride

For visitors without automobile transportation, the best way to score one of St. Thomas' legendary views is this gondola, located across the street from the Havensight cruise ship dock and shopping center. It whisks visitors high above Charlotte Amalie harbor to an entertainment center at the top of the 700-foot peak. From here you can see all the way to St. Croix, Vieques, and Culebra on a clear day. At the bar, sample a famous Bailey's Bushwhacker (be prepared to open your wallet wide), hike the quarter-mile nature trail, catch an entertaining bird show, or shop for souvenirs. Paradise Point features live music in the evenings and Carnival-type games and activities throughout the year.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : Paradise Point gives you the best of St. Thomas: great views, drinks and music.

Chelle's expert tip : The cable car only operates when cruise ships are in port, but you can drive up to Paradise Point to drink in cocktails and the view.

Mahogany Run Golf Course

Mahogany Run Golf Course

The only golf course on St. Thomas, the very hilly Mahogany Run course is declared "spectacular" by golfers. Designed by George and Tom Fazio, the par-70 course boasts its famous "Devil's Triangle" — holes 13, 14 and 15, which stretch along dramatic cliffs and whose fairways cross the Caribbean Sea. Set into a coastal valley, the greens have hosted celebs and dignitaries as diverse as Tiger Woods and Bill Clinton. Club rentals are available at the pro shop. Green fees vary by season and include a golf cart; twilight and off-season rates are available. Cruise ship passengers may opt for a ship-golf package.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : St. Thomas' only golf course is gorgeous and challenging with mountain and sea views.

Chelle's expert tip : The club has its own restaurant, but if you are looking for a special dinner in the vicinity, reserve a table at the Old Stone Farmhouse.

Magic Ice Gallery

Magic Ice Gallery

A spinoff of an Oslo, Norway, ice sculpture gallery, Magic Ice localizes its inventory with Virgin Island themes such as Blackbeard, local marine creatures and other works carved by specially trained Lithuanian artists and illuminated with changing colored lights. The sculptures, which include an ice chapel, change up a few times each year. It's a great place to truly "chill" on a hot downtown day. Kids love the ice slide. Admission includes a chilled shot of your choice of local Cruzan rum, from the 40 foot bar made of ice, and use of a deluxe parka and leggings and gloves.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : This is a perfect escape from the heat and throngs along downtown Charlotte Amalie's waterfront.

Chelle's expert tip : The temperature remains at 35 degrees, so make sure your toes are covered.

Tree Limin' Extreme Zipline St. Thomas

Tree Limin' Extreme Zipline St. Thomas

One of St. Thomas' newest attractions, Tree Limin' Extreme consists of a series of eight cables and two rope bridges that crisscross down verdant St. Peter Mountain, one of the island's highest peaks.Visitors cop stunning views across the Caribbean Sea, with Magens Bay in the foreground and the islands of St. John, Tortola and Jost Van Dyke in the distance. The eighth and final zip line is the only "yo-yo" zip in the Caribbean: instead of a typical point-to-point ride, this type of zip line allows the rider to travel to the far end of the line, pause briefly, then yo-yo back. The entire zip line tour takes about two-and-half to three hours.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : This is the only canopy zip line facility in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Chelle's expert tip : Children must be at least 5 years old to tandem zip and 8 years old (and at least 70 pounds) to solo zip.

Blackbeard's Castle / Skytsborg Tower

Blackbeard's Castle / Skytsborg Tower

Although the pirate Blackbeard most likely never set foot on St. Thomas, he is something of a patron anti-saint. The center of this attraction, Skytsborg Tower, was used as a military lookout in colonial times, but has come to be called Blackbeard's Castle in the middle of an eponymous inn. You can visit it along with a knot of historical structures on Blackbeard Hill by a self-guided tour the inn offers and tickets. The tour begins with a dramatic and entertaining pirate re-enactor at the watchtower, which you can climb. Docents are stationed strategically along a trail that leads to circa-1860 Villa Notman, which showcases antique mahogany furniture from Trinidad and Barbados. Built in 1822, Haagensen House features restored outbuildings, gardens, 19th-century exhibit rooms and a Pirate's Gallery of sculptures depicting the Caribbean's most infamous. The trail ends at Hotel 1829, another 19th century home with a 20-foot amber waterfall.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : This one tour takes in many of the island's historic treasures with a bit of spice.

Chelle's expert tip : The pathway along this historic self-tour trail is uneven, steep and stepped.

St. Peter Great House and Botanical Gardens

St. Peter Great House and Botanical Gardens

A restored colonial plantation great house originally built in the early 1800s lies at the heart of these 11 lushly landscaped mountain top acres above Magens Bay. The 2,000 square foot structure, open ofr touring, exemplifies West Indian colonial architecture with exquisite detail. Allow about 45 minutes to tour the grounds, which include the botanical gardens' nature trail, waterfalls, fish ponds, a tropical bird aviary and more than 20 species of orchids and 150 varieties of Caribbean plants and fruiting trees. An observation tower expands your view to encompass at least 15 other U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : St. Peter Great House combines the island's history with its nature for the best of what St. Thomas offers.

Chelle's expert tip : Do NOT forget the camera. Besides the lovely vegetation, St. Peter Great House affords some the island's best views.

Experienced naturalists lead groups of two to 50 participants, providing informed commentary on the indigenous flora and fauna of the area. The trips includes about an hour's worth of easy kayaking, a half-hour walk and a half-hour stop for snorkeling and underwater exploration.

Chelle's expert tip : The ecotours are suitable for paddlers and snorkelers of all ages and skill levels.

St. John Ferry

St. John Ferry

The quick ferry ride to the island of St. John whisks you away from St. Thomas' bustle to a quieter, more natural island. The Virgin Islands National Park occupies about two-thirds of the island, insuring it remains as lightly developed as it is. The ferry ride from Red Hook is air-conditioned and comfortable with TV cartoons airing to keep the kids occupied. It lands some 20 minutes later at the docks at Cruz Bay, the island's main town. From there you can walk to a number of fun shops and good restaurants and bars as well as the national park visitors center. Or hop aboard one of the safari surreys that await in the town plaza for transport to St. John's gorgeous beaches. The most lauded, Trunk Bay has an underwater snorkeling trail. Along the island's climbing road you'll see breathtaking views, donkeys, sugar mill ruins and mongooses.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : No trip to St. Thomas is complete without a visit to its little brother island.

Chelle's expert tip : Ferries also depart from downtown Charlotte Amalie, but less frequently.

Magens Bay

The most highly awarded and flaunted beach in St. Thomas, it attracts locals and tourists alike to its coved, sandy shores within the verdant embrace of St. Thomas' famously scenic hillsides below the Drake's Seat overlook. It is also one of the island's most developed beaches. Complete amenities make it an all-around perfect spot for watersports, picnicking, sunbathing or just people-watching. Concessions feed appetites for beach food, beer, kayaking, beach lounging and other sandy pursuits. Sea grape trees and plenty of picnic tables line the fine white sand. On weekends, the locals come to party, so head early to the fringe areas if you are looking for peace.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : Magens Bay's beach offers an outstanding all-around beach experience, with lifeguards, a snack bar, restrooms, picnic areas and watersports.

Chelle's expert tip : The beach bar features wait staff who will come to take your order from you on the beach.

Both are located on the south side of the island not far from Charlotte Amalie. Generally, the ships of Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Royal Caribbean (except Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas) dock at Havensight. What to Look for When Choosing a Family-Friendly Resort in the Virgin Islands

It can be overwhelming to plan a family vacation. To make it easier, here is a list of the most important things to consider when booking a hotel in the Virgin Islands.

The Virgin Islands are an idyllic tropical getaway that offers various atmospheres and activities. Choosing where to stay is the most important thing to consider when booking accommodation. Here is a brief summary of the main highlights of the Virgin Islands:

St. Thomas is the gateway island of the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Known for its beautiful beaches and snorkeling spots, it is also home to the capital, Charlotte Amalie, which is a bustling port city famous for its Danish colonial architecture, shopping, and historical sites.

Over half of St. John is covered by the Virgin Islands National Park, which preserves the natural beauty of the island with its forests, beaches, and coral reefs. It’s known for its hiking trails, like the Reef Bay Trail, and pristine beaches such as Trunk Bay, renowned for its underwater snorkeling trail.

The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix boasts a diverse landscape from lush tropical forests to desert-like areas. It has a rich cultural heritage, with influence from the Danish, West African, and Indigenous Carib peoples. Visitors can explore historical sites like the Christiansted and Frederiksted, rum distilleries, and beautiful beaches.

British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands are known for their stunning beauty and exclusivity. Islands like Virgin Gorda and Tortola offer luxurious resorts such as Long Bay Beach Club, which cater to families seeking a high-end, secluded getaway. The British Virgin Islands are perfect for sailing, exploring hidden coves, and enjoying world-class snorkeling and diving.

You can’t go far wrong when choosing where to stay on these stunning tropical islands – but it is still worth taking the time to consider which atmosphere appeals to you the most.

Kid-Friendly Amenities and Activities

Resorts featuring kids’ clubs can provide educational and entertaining experiences for your little ones, ensuring they’re happily engaged throughout your stay. For families with older children and teenagers, seek resorts offering adventurous activities such as water sports, hiking trails, and guided island tours.

These activities provide lots of opportunities for quality family time you will remember for life, but also introduce children to new experiences and cultures. Ensure the resort offers family-friendly pools, possibly with child-safe features and play areas, to ensure relaxation and fun for all ages.

Accommodation Options

Look for resorts providing various room configurations to suit your family’s needs, from spacious family villas and interconnected rooms to suites equipped with kitchenettes for easy meal preparation. The option of having separate sleeping areas for parents and children can make your stay more comfortable and relaxing.

Food Options

It can be difficult to find food that keeps everyone in your family happy. We recommend choosing a resort with a diverse range of dining options, from formal restaurants to casual beachside cafes, to ensure everyone finds something to their liking.

Kid-friendly menus, flexible dining hours, and the availability of all-inclusive or meal-plan options can simplify meal times, allowing more time for relaxation and family fun. If necessary, check for resorts that provide accommodations for dietary restrictions and preferences.

Safety and Convenience

When traveling with your family, finding a safe environment is a top priority. Resorts with private beaches offer a secure environment for children to play and explore. On-site medical services provide peace of mind, knowing that professional help is readily available if needed. The proximity of the resort to local attractions minimizes travel time, reducing stress and maximizing your vacation enjoyment.

Additional amenities, such as babysitting services and laundry facilities, can also make your trip go as smoothly as you deserve!

When deciding on accommodation in the Virgin Islands, carefully consider the preferred location, available activities, dining options, room types, and amenities to ensure a vacation that and suits your family’s needs.
