Viking river cruise on Danube

My husband and I took a river cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg with Viking in August. We had taken a river cruise with Uniworld in the past and found it very relaxing. From the beginning our experience with Viking was anything but relaxing. We decided to book our air with them since they assured us that doing so would make things go more smoothly. We also added on 3 days in the beginning in Budapest. Our first flight was cancelled and Viking rebooked is on another flight ( without consulting us) that now had 3 layovers instead of 2 and would lengthen our travel time to 20 hours. Since they had rebooked us the airline was unable to change the reservation. My husband’s luggage was lost and the Viking representatives at the hotel were unconcerned and not helpful. We found out that because the Danube was low we would be bused to the ship. We realize that the level of the Danube was not under Viking’s control but they made little effort to make up for this. Instead, we had long bus trips, less time in the cities and no flexibility about going in and out of the cities. No apologies were given and we were made to feel that we were just lucky the cruise wasn’t cancelled. We had to change ships several days into the cruise so we were unable to really settle in and had to get to know a new crew. The final straw for us occurred when a group of us got back from an excursion. The rest of the guests had been back since 1 but we were now docked in a new area. There was no gangplank for us to get aboard. The crew was now lowering a small gangplank from the top deck. To get to it, we had to scramble down a steep enbankment with large rocks at the bottom. We had several women in their seventies in our group. The crew stayed at the bottom and waited for the men in our group to help people down. Several people fell... luckily not onto the rocks. When my husband complained about the lack of planning and concern for our safety, the social director told him, “tell the captain” We we’re so shaken and appalled at the lack of caring for guests that we hit off the ship and spent the last 2 nights at a hotel. I will not be taking another Viking cruise.

Took a Viking River Cruise on the Seine from Paris to Normandy. Went through the communities of Giverny, Vernon, Rouen and Les Ansley’s. All very historic communities dating back to the 12th century in some cases. Travel through locks and lovely countryside.

This cruise exceeded our expectations. The staff was awesome! They created an environment for a worry free getaway. We thoroughly enjoyed the tours. We did all of the included tours and added on 2 extras. I thought the food was very good with enough variety for our week’s journey. We had such a great time that we are starting to think about our next Viking River Cruise in 2020.

14 Day cruise form Budapest to Amsterdam. Consisted of day trips in most large European cities along the way..

We took our first Viking river cruise, Sept 22-29, 2018. We were very impressed. The longship is lovely -- very well appointed, very tasteful. Our veranda cabin was impeccably clean and well laid out allowing for maximum storage and convenient access. Bathroom floor was heated -- a nice touch. With the exception of one night, the meals were terrific -- lots of options, and the food was very good. On the whole, service on the ship was excellent. Our cabin service as exceptional. General hospitality was also good. Dining room service was a bit slow at times, but not seriously so. The excursions and guides were excellent. The Taste of Alsace optional tour was terrific -- worth the extra sum. Really enjoyed the afternoon cruising the Rhine as well -- fortunately the weather was ideal. Viking is clearly committed to customer service and was immediately attentive to special requests and concerns. There were complimentary "extras" throughout the cruise as well. Our one disappointment came from the "pep rally" atmosphere created by the Program Director during two or three of the group gatherings. Rather than the elegant, refined environment we expected from Viking, it felt more like summer camp and made us uncomfortable -- adults being treated like kids (to be fair, many of the guests seem to enjoy this, but we did not). I hasten to add that our Program Director was impressive and genuine -- professional, highly organized, and very approachable. He's clearly an expert, and we benefitted from his knowledge and experience. We learned from other repeat travelers than this is not typical of Viking so we found that reassuring. Two other areas we think Viking needs to reconsider -- 1) no single supplement, so single travelers pay for 2 people if they want to travel alone. This did not affect us, but it's a discriminatory practice that does not reflect societal demographics and needs review, and 2) not allowing one person in a couple to take the Spirits Package. This policy conveys a level of distrust which is not in keeping with Viking's image. Overall, we really enjoyed our first cruise and are already considering another Viking cruise. We feel Viking earned their excellent reputation with the experience we had, and we will recommend them to family and friends. We also felt that the 8-day cruise was ideal for a first cruise experience. Thank you, Viking, for your commitment to service and for a memorable vacation.

First, we tried to take advantage of their low airfares. However, they charged us extra to come in early and stay later since we didn’t want to use their overpriced extensions. Also, their travel group was Very difficult to deal with. The good: The staff was, by far, the highlight of the trip. They are extremely well trained, friendly and quick to help. The French balcony room was very well designed and made excellent use of space. We liked the bed and the design of the shower. The bad: The “included tours” were too large (38-42 people). In hindsight, we would have preferred no included tours, at a lower price and booked our own. In addition, some tours were not that great, even with if it had been a small group. Viviers, in particular, was a sad little forgotten town with not much to see. You had to pay a premium to get a smaller group. One such “optional” tour was 120 euros per person and the group size was 22 people. The food was so so. We expected excellent food and got mediocre. The pre-cruise information talked of three venues, but in reality, there were two with basically the same menu. Tandem docking, ships docked side by side, was the norm at each port, taking away the view from our French balcony on a regular basis. There were only four ports on an 8 day cruise and very little daytime cruising. The sundeck was closed 90% of the cruise. The overall experience: We paid a premium to take a Viking river cruise and didn’t receive a premium experience. How anyone can give this cruis 5 stars is absurd.

We appreciate your feedback, f02301, and while we’re delighted to hear that you had an enjoyable experience interacting with the staff, we regret to learn that other aspects of our voyage together were disappointing for you. To continue this conversation and discuss your concerns, we welcome you to contact us at [email protected]. We’re looking forward to speaking through that outlet, f02301, and wish you a lovely day.

Viking Rhone River Cruise

8 Day Viking cruise from Lyon to Avignon exceeded our expectations. Two couples with many years of worldwide travel were very impressed with organization and overall service of the crew of the Viking ship Heimdal in the summer of 2018. We enjoyed the history, sights and culture of Southern France. The ship schedule allow ample opportunity to tour everything from Roman ruins and history to the role of the resistance in WWII. Of course the vineyards of the various wine regions were a highlight as well as educational. The food on the ship was excellent and allowed great variety. We plan to tour the Rhone River with Viking in the near future.

First of all you have to realize that these cruises are designed for you to see a little bit of a lot of places in a short time without having to drag your luggage from hotel to hotel. And that is exactly what happened. We took the Rhine River cruise in July and enjoyed it immensely. The customer service is absolutely first rate and could not be better. I was constantly amazed at the little amenities and how well we were treated. The food on the boat was a gourmet delight. Every meal was awesome. The excursions, naturally, hit the touristy spots and some tended to be crowded. But each walking tour included a tour guide carrying a sign and we all wore headsets so we could hear him or her. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and quite interesting. I had broken my foot six weeks prior to the trip so I wasn't up to doing a lot of long distance walking but if you are able, there is much more you can do than just the organized tours. Once the boat docks you can walk, get a cab, or bicycle an set out on your own. As long as you get back before the boat leaves, you are fine. I highly recommend Viking. My only complaint was that the wifi was so poor on the boat that it was virtually useless. We ended up paying $100 for an international phone plan just because we needed to use the internet now and then. Other than that, Viking knows what it is doing.

We are delighted to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed your Viking voyage, DenaBeeTripper. Further, we are thankful for your constructive feedback, and have made note of your comments for future consideration. Your accolade is appreciated and we hope to travel with you again in the future!

We were a group of ten who are first time cruisers with Viking. We cruise at least once a year and have gone on Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, NCL, and Oceania. All of us were very disappointed with how our trip was handled. Because of the low water levels in the canals and rivers, we had to disembark 3 times and be bused to the next destination to board a different ship. A lot of our time was spent packing and unpacking and being bused during the 7-night trip. Instead of having our planned excursions in the morning, we had to get up early and were on a bus 4 to 5 hours headed to our next location. We never had the “river cruise” experience that we expected. Never saw the scenic landscapes from our ship because once we boarded the “new” ship, it was already around 1 pm, which was only enough time for lunch and our rescheduled shore excursion. We returned in the evening from our tours to find our ship parked side by side with up to three other ships. The only thing you see from your window or balcony is another ship 6” away from you. I learned that as early as Oct, Viking was aware of the water level situation but they proceeded with their schedule. We were not notified and given an option to reschedule or cancel our trip. It was a waste of my money and time, and caused much anxiety and stress. Viking is definitely off my list for future travel. L

I think this is the best way to visit Cuba. The ship "Viking Star" is very comfortable. We had 900 passengers but it never felt like we did. The decor of the shio is first class. Very comfortable colors and a feeling like you are home. The food at each restaurant was exceptional and the service very first class. We had two days of being at sea. During this time there were lectures about Cuba and related topics by very accomplish professor. I really enjoyed the lectures. Our room was very comfortable and the valet service excellent. The included walking tours were excellent. Tour guides spoke English and were knowledgeable.

Welcome home, Travelingman1212, and thank you for reviewing your Cultural Cuba voyage. We are excited to hear that you enjoyed the ship's aesthetics, the food, service and tours, as we strive to provide an excellent experience for all of our guests. If you choose to go on another adventure with us, we would be delighted to welcome you back aboard! Have a lovely day.

Our trip started out badly. We had paid Viking for a 14 day cruise starting in Amsterdam including flights and all transfers. Three hours prior to departure KLM Airlines emailed only one of our party of 8, that our flight was cancelled! Luckily the person checked her email and just saved us an expensive cab ride and long wait. KLM never offered any solution and Viking took NO responsibility and said they washed their hands of our dilemma caused by their Airline choice. Luckily our amazing travel agents at Expedia Travel in Edmonton worked hard to arrange the next possible flight that brought us to Amsterdam 2 days late for our cruise. Viking then arranged to drive us to our ship the Mirmir, and from boarding the ship to end of cruise the Viking service was excellent 5star all the way. Viking(KLM?) should be financially responsible for our 2 day cruise and included tours that we all missed. No satisfaction or replies have given by Viking to date. Needless to say that we will not be considering Viking again unless they take responsibility for losses they caused us. This is same review as Jim R in Edmonton as there were 8 of us that missed out on part o0f our cruise.

Thank you for reaching out, McGordy. Although we’re sorry to hear that your cruise was cut short due to the unfortunate flight cancellations on part of the airline, we are delighted that your Viking experience was excellent. While we understand your frustration, please note that the airline is responsible for providing alternative solutions in order to get you to your destination. Further, we would be happy to assist you at submitting a claim with your travel insurance company to be reimbursed for the portion of the cruise that you missed. Please contact us at [email protected] or directly at 1-877-523-0579 with your booking information, where a member of our Customer Relations Department will be happy to walk you through the process. Have a great day.

Viking did not make us aware of the potential for low water when we booked our November river cruise. Had they told us we would not have booked that one. We spent more time on the buses between ships than sailing on the Danube. 3 ships in 8 days. Could not even unpack our clothes. Had a balcony which was useless because they docked next to another ship so could not see anything. Very disappointed. Staff was great but trip was exhausting with all the changes in itinerary.

Viking River Cruise - Grand European Tour

In June of 2017 my husband and I traveled with Viking River Cruises on their Skirnir Ship. For 15 days we traveled the Rhine and Danube rivers from Amsterdam to Budapest. We just can't say enough about this tour and Viking. The ship, crew, food and excursions was more that we could have ever hoped for!! Every meal felt like we were dining in a five star restaurant. The staff was attentive to our every need. Stephen Guy, our program director, was like a shepherd, tending to his flock. He kept track of everyone while they were off the ship. The local tour guides were very informative, giving us detailed history of their beloved cities. we met many new friends and had fun every minute of every day. We will be taking another cruise with Viking Cruise Lines. They are the best in the industry!!

Viking river cruises and their crews are the best in the business. First class all the way. We did the rhine river from basel to amsterdam and could not have had a better time.

Nuremberg to Budapest was our second river cruise on Viking. The first the Rhine was very good. This sevond was a disaster, a rippoff. Because of where the boat was docked we spent the first three days waiting fot the lock tp open being bused to our itinerary cities. Then once underway Viking never recovered schedule, due in my opinion to propulsion problems with the boat. We missed on major destinstion and sailed through the most scenic part in the dark arroving a day late in Budapest. Viking offered us only a 20% discount credit of only our cabin cost toward another cruise within a year. Attempts to negotiate aore equitable settlement were obfuscated by Viking and in the end we were given an onerous one sided Non Disclosure which it was purported to us that if we signed it we would get a 30% credit. No refunds. No admission of their incompetence and faulty equipment. We turned it down. There are many cruising alternatives and they just can't be any more arrogant. Too bad as we had liked our first cruise.

The river cruise itself met more than our expectations. The staff, food, rooms and excursions were fantastic. We took several of the optional tours to Salzburg, Rothenberg and Kunta Hora which we did not regret. Unfortunately we will not take another Viking cruise due to the marketing hook of cheap air fares at the expense of horrible flight itineraries and inconveniences that their customer service staff seems to be completely indifferent to any complaint. Also, the hotel in Prague for the post trip extension was substandard in both room accommodations and city placement.

Sailed on the one week Viking Forseti cruise out of Bordeaux on June 10, 2017. A superb experience. Cuisine was top-notch, and the staff highly trained and accommodating. The tour director, Filiz, could not be more skilled at her job. (She even graciously accepted my unsolicited edits to the English of a few on-board publications. I'm sure she had more pressing issues to deal with.)The front desk (Ana) and our waiters (Robert, Djoko, Marina) were excellent.I am a very experienced cruiser, both ocean and river. This one I would rate one of the best ever, if not the finest overall. Viking is really at the top of their game.

This was our first river cruise. We were on the Viking Jarl, it was a fairly new ship. Will have to be a great cruise before going back to the Caribbean. You had changing scenery ever minute. With also a small ship 170 passengers, you were treated very well. Within a few days the staff knew you name as well as cabin number. Food was excellent! We were a group of 6 and one had food allergies. They brought the next days menu to her every night to chose her meal . Same as ours except without the things she was ellergect to. We also bought the Silver drink package. Well worth the money if you would like try different wines and beers. We took several optional tours, as well as the included. Both exceptional. They hire local guides that live in the city. Would do it again in a heart beat on a different river.

Viking river cruise

First class service from the minute you leave home to your return and everything in between. This should be on everyone’s bucket list. Cruise past beauty and history with a fine wine.

Our first river cruise and recommended by our friends. We began in Budapest two days before cruise as part of our trip. Awesome time and great help from Viking with plane and hotel accommodations. We have been on many Ocean cruises but never a river cruise. From start to finish this was the very best in all aspects. We are now looking forward to our next river cruise with Viking and I’m sure many more. It is a must! Egil was name of our ship, but other friends tell us there’s were just as good as ours.

Great cruise. Viking does everything and then some to make your cruise a most pleasurable experience. This was our third Viking cruise and we are currently planning our fourth.

Want to visit multiple countries without worrying about how you are going to get to each local? Viking River Cruise is your answer. I do not like Ocean Cruising. I find the boats too big with too many people. Viking River Cruise offers a more intimate experience (190 passengers), and you see land at all times! We took the Romantic Danube cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg. From the moment we met our Viking welcome team at the airport to the time we left them for our return, we were treated royally! Bags were handled for us, delivered to our hotel, then to the boat. We arrived early for our cruise: Take advantage of a Pre Package! We stayed at the Hilton in the Castle District in Budapest, a perfect location! Our one mistake: We didn’t book the Post Package to Prague! All of the tours offered, those included with the cruise package and the add-ons, are exceptional. We paid for the Walking/Food Tour in Budapest, the Heurigen Dinner in Vienna, Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg, and the World War II Nuremberg Tour. Note: the Cruise Director reviews excursions nightly in the lounge before dinner. I recommend having a person attend to get updates on excursions. We signed up for the free tour of Vienna. A walking tour, not mentioned prior to the cruise, was offered at the nightly briefing. We opted to walk vs. taking a bus tour and we are happy we did! When booking, I wanted a room with a French Balcony or Full Veranda. We traveled with a group, and hubby recommended putting the extra expense to the excursions instead of the room. He was right!! Our stateroom was bright with lots of hook and shelves. Fresh water is provided in the room, and you have a mini-frig. Coffee, tea, water, seltzer is always available just outside the lounge. Do you like that afternoon sweet? ...no problem. Have a cookie with your afternoon tea! We signed up for the Silver Spirit Package and if you like a cocktail when you return from your explorations, I highly recommend you do the same! The bartenders on our ship were fantastic! I smile when I think of them! (Milan and Zorhan, hugs to you both!) The food on the ship is wonderful! It is so good that when eight from our group left the ship for the Heurigen Dinner, we were lamenting missing a great meal. No worries there, the Heurigen Dinner was a BLAST! ...And what a feast! If you are a fan of The Sound of Music, take the tour. The beauty of Mirabell gardens and the old city, the shops, and the lunch with entertainment is a memory I will hold dear for my lifetime. Note: You are given at least an hour to explore in each destination during a tour. We loved this trip so much, we just booked another tour for 2019!

Excellent in all ways. Viking Forsetti is a beautiful well-run and well maintained river boat. Service was fantastic as was the food. Casual atmosphere perfect. The staff were great: helpful, service minded and took great care of us. The land tours were interesting, fun, well planned and perfect. Staterooms were comfortable, nicely appointed, roomy and serviced twice each day. Can’t imagine a better river cruise. Highly recommended.

Viking Mekong is a very small ship with the only public area other than the dining room being the sun deck. Unfortunately some of the passengers spent a great deal of time smoking cigars. They were not in the designated smoking area but rather under the canopy. Therefore, the entire deck was in a cloud of vile smoke. Staff spoke to them, but the problem reoccurred. In addition there was rampant flu. We were told this is not uncommon which made the issue more distressing. Contagious passengers came to dinner in masks, but they removed them to eat. They used the utensils in the buffet line until we said something to the staff. Even then, staff would offer to serve, but they continued to help themselves. The sneeze guard is significantly inadequate. There was little guidance for infected passengers and no real effort to prevent the spread of the flu. They did disinfect the lecture room but that did little to prevent the airborne spread of disease. There was one lecture on deck, but others were in the confines of the small room on the lower deck. Thus, lectures and movies were undesirable. In fairness, the staff provided excellent service and the food was prepared well. However, the lack of protocols to deal with illness made meals unpleasant. We were surprised and distressed to find that Viking allows cigars on board. We have previously sailed with Viking and were very pleased. However, this experience has soured me on any future cruises.

Introduction

This was our 13th river cruise since 2012 and the 12th with Viking. We’d originally booked the Great Lakes cruise from Duluth, Minnesota to Toronto, Ontario but after seeing it on Viking TV realised it was too active for us. We’d have lost our deposit by cancelling but a phone call to Viking told me that we could transfer to another cruise for an admin fee of £100 each. Asked which cruise we wanted I plumped for the Rhone, and since we’d cruised downriver in 2015 I chose up-river from Avignon to Lyon. Not losing the deposit was such a relief I didn’t realise till later that the cabin they’d suggested wasn’t a Veranda Stateroom but a Veranda Suite.

The Veranda Suite has a bedroom with a French Balcony and a living room with a Veranda. So now this was the fourth type of Viking Longship cabin we’d stayed in. Surprisingly it had less personal storage. The other cabins had two sets of three drawers under the desk, plus two drawers in the wardrobe: the Veranda Suite had just the two in its wardrobe. Also there was a lack of power points. The living room had a 220 (Europlug socket) and 110 (USA flat pin socket) at the desk, but the 220 was used to charge the Quietvox. There was one 220 by the bed. The USB socket didn’t charge devices quickly, if at all. I’d brought a Europlug with four USB sockets and used the bedside 220 socket. Thus we could charge two Kindles and two phones.

But there was a bottle of Champagne Jacquart Mosaique Brut NV in a cooler with two flutes, and the fridge was filled with soft drinks and two 250ml bottles of white wine and on top were another two 250ml bottles of red wine and wine glasses. These were refilled daily, but since we only drink wine now, and the Silver Spirits Beverage package was included we didn’t make much use of them. Since we could have glass of Champagne anytime the bottle of Jacquart came home with us and will be drunk in memory of this cruise.

Daily shoeshine and free laundry was included, and the wardrobe had towelling robes and sandals. This cruise, as is usual currently, included free Silver Spirits package and gratuities.

20230817_Viking-Delling.jpg

The boat was Viking Delling, the same boat we’d cruised down the Rhone in 2015. Four Viking boats cruise up and down the route, crossing at Tournon where both sets of passengers go on the steam train ride.

Note: All times are in 24hr format, thus 03:00 means 3 am and 15:00 means 3pm

DAY 1 Tuesday 15 August - London>Avignon

20230815_rhone-from-plane.jpg

Check-in was quick and flight from Heathrow to Marseille was on time. It was an afternoon flight and I’d calculated that with the extra hour time difference that we’d reach the boat at the start of dinner at 19:00. We’d checked in two identical cases and one was the third or fourth to come out on to the carousel at Marseille. We waited for the other case till the carousel powered off and the lighted sign showing our flight number was extinguished. A lot of people were missing their bags, and a long line was forming at the missing bag desk.

When we exited Arrivals we were greeted by the Viking rep who led us to some tables she’d commandeered at a café and we sat with the others till all remaining Viking passengers had reported missing bags and exited Arrival.

It’s just over an hour’s drive from Marseille airport to Avignon where the boat was moored. We got to the ship at about 20:20 and went straight to the restaurant for dinner.

20230815_Dinner-Menu-2.jpg

After dinner Joan rinsed  her clothes in the bathroom.

DAY 2 Wednesday 16 August - Arles

Joan received a text to say her bag would be delivered 10:00 – 20:00

While we slept the boat departed down-river for Arles, arriving there at 08:00. We took the included walking tour at 09:15, Joan wearing one of my shirts.

20230816_Arles-Amphitheatre-1.jpg

Temperature was in the high 30˚s and Joan bought a hat from a street stall. Arles is most famous for two sites; its amphitheatre (not Coliseum insisted our guide who said there’s only one and it’s in Rome) and the hospital where Vincent van Gogh stayed and painted that and around 300 other Arles views. There are other Roman ruins and the town centre is close to the river, compact and easily walkable.

20230816_Arles-Amphitheatre-2.jpg

The amphitheatre is impressively large. We sat on one of the seating tiers while the guide told us its history and showed picture of how it looked in Roman times. It is still used to day for public shows.

Then a few minutes later we were in the courtyard of van Gogh’s hospital. It had several different roles subsequently before coming into public ownership. The garden was recreated from van Gogh’s paintings and letters.

20230816_Arles-Hospital-Garden.jpg

Our guide mused on the various pronunciations of van Gogh’s name. Go (o as in ‘owe’) is usual in USA, while Goff (o as in ‘ox’) in UK and Gock (gh as in a cough crossed with throat clearing) in his native Netherlands.

During the walk the guide pointed out where van Gogh had rented rooms, the café terrace in his 1888 painting   Café Terrace at Night   and other scenes.

We made our own way back to the boat for a coffee instead of waiting around in ‘free time’.

20230816_Lunch-Menu.jpg

After lunch we walked the short distance back to Arles where Joan bought a t-shirt.

20230817-joan-arle-tshirt.jpg

The boat cast off at 18:00 to return to Avignon. Joan’s bag did not arrive.

20230816_Dinner-Menu.jpg

Day 3 - Thursday 17 August - Avignon

20230817_Avignon-City-Wall.jpg

When we woke we were moored again at Avignon. The city is surrounded by a serious wall, with battlements and regular forts along it. The included excursion ‘Avignon Walk and Pope’s Palace’ set off at 09:00 but we didn’t join it. We’d done it in 2015 and Joan didn’t want to trudge again through the crowds packed in the palace which would be very stuffy in the current temperature. Instead we had a lazy breakfast during which Joan got a text that her bag had arrived, but reception said it hadn’t arrived.

We decided to explore Avignon ourselves, but tried, without success, the two cruise boats moored next to ours in case Joan’s bag had gone to the wrong ship.

20230817_Avignon-Popes-Palace.jpg

The marble pavements in Avignon, polished by generations of feet, were very slippery. After viewing the outside of the Pope’s palace, glad we were not in the crowds queuing for entry, we returned to the boat.

At 14:00 we joined the coach going on the optional excursion ‘Chateauneuf du Pape Wine Tasting’. For 70 years in the 14thC Avignon had been the home of the papacy and seven Popes had ruled there.

20230817_Popes-new-chateau.jpg

They built a chateau   (now a ruin, above)   among vineyards on a hill to escape the summer heat of Avignon. That new chateau now gives its name to the wine of the surrounding area, which is made of a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre but 18 or 13 (sources differ) are be allowed.

20230817_Chateauneuf-vineyard.jpg

Millennia ago the region used to be the Rhone river bed and the soil comprises large smooth river-bed stones. These take in the day’s heat and release warmth during the night, adding to the richness of the wine.

Chateauneuf du Pape wines, in bottles embossed with Papal keys, are expensive which explained to us the high cost of the optional tour. We were taken to the ruins on the new Chateau, surrounded by vineyards and had a short time to take photos, before being bussed down to the village below.

20230817_Chateauneuf-village.jpg

We were led from the coach to Chateauneuf du Pape village centre and given just over 20 minutes ‘free time’. The blurb for this says this is where we’d    ‘meet the vintners whose families have lovingly cultivated these vineyards for generations. They invite you to browse their winery cellars and learn the delicate blending process behind their extraordinary wine. Toast your experience by sampling the distinctive bouquet and finish of these very special wines in the place of their birth'.   There was not enough time to ‘meet vintners’, ‘browse winery cellars’ ‘learn the delicate blending process’ and sample their wines. I didn’t see any vintners, let alone receive any invitations. The description was highly misleading.

20230817_Alain-Jaume-winery.jpg

Then we were bussed to Alain Jaume & Fils winery where we were shown their cellars before going for a tasting. Only three wines were presented, one not exported white and one red Chateauneuf du Pape wine. The third wine was a €10.20 rosé from Tavel. The hostess seemed keener to encourage wine shipments to the USA than to tell us about the wines.

Then back to the boat. I felt we were overcharged at £154 for a couple and that while two Chateauneuf du Pape wines might technically be a Chateauneuf du Pape Wine Tasting, it wasn’t in the spirit. Alain Jaume makes four different red Chateauneuf du Pape wines. Not recommended.*

When we got back Joan’s bag was in our room. The boat left at 18:30 heading up-river to Viviers.

* On my return I wrote to Viking about my concerns with this tour – as detailed in the post. They offered   generous On Board Credit for our next cruise, and said that the excursion and my comments would be discussed by the board. I am satisfied with their response

Day 4 - Friday 18 August – Viviers

20230818_Viviers-Mooring.jpg

We arrived at Viviers at 01:30, and after breakfast we took the included excursion ‘Viviers Walk’ starting at the civilised time of 09:45. As we waited by our guide I heard laughing from one of the other groups. Their guide seemed to have them in stitches.

20230818_Viviers-town.jpg

Viviers is small sleepy riverside town of fewer than 4,000 inhabitants and in August there were few people about and fewer moving cars. It had once been important and there was a cathedral on a high rocky crag that overlooks the town.

20230818_Viviers-Knights-house.jpg

Untouched since 1546  is the ornately carved façade of the ‘Knight’s House’, all the more strange as it is in a long terrace of houses with plain frontages. The house was owned by a salt merchant who wanted to flaunt his riches. He was given the job of tax collector by the Bishop, got even richer and ended as ruler of the town.

20230818_Viviers-Knights-house-2.jpg

Our guide took the group up a steep, cobbled street to the cathedral. I stayed behind looking at the façade and heard laughing people coming towards me. It was the leisurely group. Their guide was a short wiry Frenchman, in his late 60s or early 70s, and I listened as he told the history of the Knight’s house. But, unlike the guide with our group, he peppered his explanation with jokes and shrewd comments.

While the earlier guide had pointed out the carving of knights with lances as a joust, he said that as some of the knights were using the lances on fallen men it was surely a battle scene as jousts were a contest between mounted knights.

He moved the group on to the nearby small square to get everyone seated, before telling a tragic story about his mother’s family who were living in Viviers in the 1940’s under German occupation and of an American commando raid through the town that fought German troops as they headed to destroy anti-aircraft guns sited on the rocky crag.

If you go on this excursion I recommend leaving whatever group you’re in and joining his laughing one. If it’s the leisurely group you won’t get to the cathedral but you’ll have a great time and learn a lot.

20230818_lunch-menu.jpg

We cast off at 13:00 and we lunched as the boat cruised, Most preferred to eat inside where it was air-conditioned, but we revelled in the heat and took every opportunity to eat outside.

20230818_reday%20for%20lunch.jpg

We started with Champagne, and got refills during lunch.

20230818_lock.jpg

During this cruise we went through several locks. Some had pairs of doors that swung open (like this one) some had gates that sank below the water and some had gates that lifted high out of the water and dripped on the boat.

At 18:15 was the Viking Explorer Society Party for passengers who’d travelled before with Viking. I remember when this was a minority of people, but now it is the vast majority and there was no move to exclude anyone. Trays of cocktails were there for the taking.

The Programme Director was absent dealing with an emergency so it was an unstructured gathering, during which the Captain explained about Aquavit having to twice cross the equator and anyone who wanted shots got them.

20230818_Dinner-menu.jpg

Dinner today had my highlight starter of the cruise -  Red Pepper Tartlet.

20230818_red-papper-tartlet.jpg

Although it looked nothing special  such was the intensity of flavour that the first mouthful made me stop and go 'wow'.  From the regional specialities menu I had an excellent coq au vin as the main course and a delicious decadent walnut tart as dessert. The wine was a local Cozes-Hermitage by Maison des Alexandrins.

20230818_wlnut-tart.jpg

After dinner we found two shot glasses in our cabin.

We moored at Tournon at 22:00 at the end of a most enjoyable. day

Day 5 - Saturday 19 August – Tournon

09:00 was the included excursion for a ride on the Tournon Steam Train. This is a heritage railway with a one metre gauge.

I’d been tempted by the optional Vineyard Hike, but decided it was too strenuous for my current health after viewing Viking’s “Beyond the Brochure,” video featuring Jean Newman Glock.

20230819_Tournon-train-station.jpg

It’s a short coach ride to the railway station and we are there with ample time to spare before the train is due to depart. There is a gift ship and a separate (free) museum and the steam engine itself attracts attention as the crew get the steam up.

20230819_Tournon-train-engine.jpg

Train carriages are open, more like goods wagons with roofs and have wooden benches. There are many groups on the trip. Some have their name on chalkboards, but the carriages that Viking uses have a metal holster that takes Viking’s paddle. Each of the four groups from our boat has their own carriage. Guests from Viking Heimdal that departed Lyon to go to Avignon on the same day we departed Avignon to cruise to Lyon are on the train. Capacity of the train is 500 passengers.

20230819_Tournon-train.jpg

We are given a map of the route and can see where the track crosses the gorge. The best views are from the right side, but our guide asks us to swap sides coming down, so everyone gets view from both sides.

20230819_Tournon-train-gorge.jpg

It’s been a dry summer and when the train sets off it is closely followed by a diesel locomotive pulling a water bowser to extinguish any trackside fires that sparks from the steam engine might cause. We are told that in flood the River Doux sometime reaches the height of the track, but on our August trip the river consists of pools separated by dry stony river bed a long way below.

20230819_Tournon-train-turntable.jpg

After 35 minutes the train stopped and we can get out. Many rushed to the turntable where the de-coupled engine reverses onto and is turned so it is ready to pull the train back down. We swapped sides in the carriage as the train headed back down reaching the terminus in 26 minutes.

20230819_lunch-menu.jpg

Delling departed Tournon shortly after we left so the coaches took us up-river to Andance where Delling is waiting for us to embark for lunch before setting off again. During the afternoon the wheelhouse is open for visits and there are French pastries available in the lounge and a demonstration of how to make Chocolate Fondant.

20230819_cote-rotie.jpg

We enjoy a relaxing afternoon cruising and pass vineyards of Cote Rotie.

The boat is scheduled to moor at Vienne 16:45 for an included walking tour of this historic town, but it is delayed and arrived after dinner so the Vienne excursion is cancelled.

Day 6 - Sunday 20 August – Lyon

Viking Delling departed Vienne at 05:00 and three hours later moored in Lyon, our final stop.

20230820_Lyon-cathedral.jpg

At 09:00 is an included excursion. A coach tours us through the city and up to a high promontory with a cathedral and fine view over Lyon and its two rivers, Saone and Rhone.

20230820_Lyon-eiffel-tower.jpg

Close by is the Eiffel look alike tower now used as a TV and radio transmitter.

20230820_Lyon-panorama-1.jpg

When the coach takes us down to the Saone and the guide prepares for a walking tour we bale out and make our own way back to the boat. It is stifling hot in the city and the prospect of a coffee on board is more attractive than looking at buildings followed by ‘free-time’.

20230820_Lunch-menu.jpg

We miss the afternoon Enrichment Lecture on WWII Lyon and the Resistance in the lounge and also the Programme Director’s disembarkation briefing at which 'at least one person per cabin' is supposed to attend. But we need only to know three things: when to put cases outside our cabin, when to vacate our cabin and when we’ll be taken to the airport. As we have an afternoon flight and we know from experience that the answer to the first two questions is 08:00 and that everything we need to know about disembarkation will be placed in our room.

20230820_selfie.jpg

Day 7 - Monday 21 August – Lyon

This is the last full day of the cruise.

At 08:45 we join an included excursion to Beaujolais Wine Country. We travel north as the guide tells about Beaujolais. The appellation Beaujolais, which includes the once famous young wine Beaujolais Nouveau, but the best wines come from the ten ‘crus’ which use their name instead of Beaujolais – although all the red wines of the region are made from the same black grape variety Gamay. About 5% of production, rarely seen outside the area, is white wine made from Chardonnay.

20230821_Ch_Ravatys_sign.jpg

We go to Chateau des Ravatys in the hills about Mount Brouilly which gave its name to two of the ‘crus’, Brouilly and Cote de Brouilly.

20230821_Gamay_grapes.jpg

First we go to a vineyard to see vines with plump bunches of black grapes, then we get a tour of the underground cellars before being seated in a barrel aging cellar for a tasting.

20230821_tasting.jpg

We are poured four wines, a white, a red Brouilly and two Cote de Brouilly  and nibbles are passed around. The excellence of the Beaujolais excursion emphasises just how overpriced was the optional  Chateauneuf du Pape visit. And while we can buy the wines if we want, there isn't the hard sell we got in Chateauneuf du Pape

I20230821_Ravatys-lineup.jpg

We are moored on the Rhone at Lyon and some people wander off into the city in the afternoon. At 17:00 we attend a demonstration in the lounge given by two people from a silk factory. They explain how complicated pictures are imprinted on silk by multiple additions of dye through a screen. After 25 minutes the talk turns to various ways women can wear silk squares and I lose interest and return to the cabin.

20230821_Dinner-Menu.jpg

Day 8 - Tuesday 22 August – Lyon > London

The latest time to depart the cabin is 08:00, which means we have only really had the suite for six full days since we arrived so late on Day1. We are not due to depart until 14:45 so have a leisurely breakfast and later the buffet embarkation/disembarkation lunch.

When not eating we sit, after a short spell on the sun deck, in the lounge. The earliest departure was 03:30 and the latest is twelve hours later at 15:30. Two other couples are on the same flight as us and Viking have booked a people-mover taxi for us.

There is no delay getting to the airport where we have to wait 20 minutes for check-in to open. Then we’re homeward bound. Both cases arrive with us.

20230818_Viviers-me-champagne.jpg

Reflections on the cruise

I like the heat and we ate out on the prow almost every lunch and dinner, and most of the others in the open were Brits and Australians. The majority of Americans preferred being inside with air-conditioning. It was also the first time I could spend any length of time on the veranda, and some evenings after dinner I sit there with a glass of white wine from our fridge while reading my Kindle.

Cooking seemed to have less flair on this cruise. As a non-cheese eater I was most aware of just how many dishes had cheese; there didn’t use to be as many.

This cruise the bottle of wine chosen from the wine list was left on the table for us to pour subsequent glasses. We preferred this, rather than the waiter taking the bottle away then coming back to top up glasses.

Since we were cruising through the famous Rhone wine region I found it disappointing there were only two red Rhone wines on the list included in the drinks package. The one Chateauneuf du Pape, at €120, was not included in the package.

There were about ten people in their twenties or thirties, the majority in the 40-50 range and a sprinkling of 60-70 year olds. It shouldn’t be assumed that the leisurely walking groups were only for the elderly, one of the youngest women on the cruise was so large she had difficulty walking and chose the easy group.

Anyone considering a trip to France in August ought to be aware that French people take their holidays in August and many places are closed.

I welcome questions about the cruise

Thank you Pontac, brings back memories especially about the train trip where as with you the weather was nicely warm but it meant we viewed far more of the French than we expected to!

Got2Cruise

Great report. It gives everyone who is considering this cruise exactly what to expect. Thank you for taking the time to attach all the photos, menus and other info.

odblnt

Thank you very much. We're taking this trip next fall (in the opposite direction) and are looking forward to it.

Thank you.  Considering this cruise in October of next year - and have never been on a river cruise before.  Definitely gives me a better idea of "the flow".

Great write up, thanks.

Nice that Viking took care of you after your poor experience on the optional cruise.

From a business sense, it would be foolish of them not to respond to legitimate issues from such a long term customer as yourself.  Judging by the tone of your writing style, I'm thinking it was a non-ranting style note you sent, and you were taken care of to your satisfaction.  Cheers!

I didn't rant.

I stated what happened, how it didn't match the description, that I thought it overpriced, and proposed an amount I thought it worth, and requested a refund of the difference. Viking were more generous.

They are the best in the industry!!

tripadvisor viking river cruise reviews

  1. Viking River cruise is my best trip ever....

Danube Christmas Delights Cruise, Viking Ingvi, 4 - 18 Dec 2022, Budapest to Passau with 2 nights Budapest pre and 3 nights Prague post Background: I think most "reviews" do not provide much actionable information. They just relate whether the people liked it, or not.

  2. Viking Cruises France

After Russia and Eastern Europe river cruises with Viking, we basically knew what we were going to get on the "Grand European Tour" and we weren't disappointed. Starting in Amsterdam and going to Budapest, we had great visits in many cities, a good tour director and local guides and an attentive crew.

  3. Viking River Cruise

A disclosure was warranted for two reasons. First, the trip cost roughly $4,250 per guest, so at that price one expects the promised goods to be delivered. Second, this problem had repeatedly occurred on the Viking Elbe cruises, which the staff onboard freely and repeatedly admitted.

  4. Viking Rhine river cruise

Viking is obviously dominating the river cruise market (think Princess). Whenever we would pull into a city, it was common to find other Viking ships, but only one offs of the others. In Vienna there were six Viking ships stacked in threes while there was only one Tauck, AmaWaterways, Uniworld Boutique, and Gate 1 with no other ships blocking ...
