All you need is a spot in the countryside, a farm, or one of the large and small concert stages – in Munich and the outback, people will party and dance to techno, world music or even Bavarian sounds at a variety of festivals all summer long. Tollwood Summer Festival

Strictly speaking, the concerts at Tollwood are not open air, but take place in the music arena tent. Nevertheless, this list of summer music festivals would simply not be complete without Tollwood, which is now over 30 years old. During the four festival weeks, both legends and newcomers will take to the stage. Featuring in 2023 are Adel Tawil, Province, Santiano, Placebo, Ayliva, Porcupine Tree, Tom Jones, LaBrassBanda, Die Fantastischen Vier, Jan Delay & Disko No. 1, Nico Santos, The Lumineers, Sportfreunde Stiller, Bonnie Tyler & Chris Norman, Danger Dan, Konstantin Wecker, Meute, Spider Murphy Gang & Münchener Freiheit, Silbermond, Beth Hart & Special Guest, Joe Bonamassa & Special Guest, Fury in the Slaughterhouse and Schmidbauer & Kälberer. Unfortunately, some concerts are already sold out.

There will also be live music every evening in the beer garden of the Hacker-Pschorr-Brett and in the Andechs tent - with free admission!

Fans of theatre, artistry and acrobatics are in for a great time at the Tollwood amphitheatre. Here, artists from France, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Germany juggle, dance, balance and perform magic. All performances are free of charge and, this time, really in the open air!

Wannda Circus Open Air

This year, the Wannda Circus celebrates its 10th anniversary. The opening takes place on 18 May in Freimann. Besides techno, house and electro, there is always a circus programme with acrobatics on stilts and fire shows. Elves take care of those who want their make-up done.

OBEN OHNE (topless) Open Air

The OBEN OHNE (topless) Open Air has been an integral part of the Munich music scene since 1998 and also has established itself in the festival scene beyond the regional borders. The aim is to offer young people in particular an affordable entry fee for interesting national and international band performances ranging from rap and hip hop to techno and pop, as well as to help young and up-and-coming artists make a big appearance. In 2023, Ennio, Dilla, BLVTH, anaïs, Berq, Blushy AM x Levin and Lokey will be performing at Königsplatz (square) in the heart of Munich's Maxvorstadt district .

Theatron Music Summer

The Theatron is an amphitheatre in the middle of Munich's Olympiapark (Olympic Park), built on the occasion of the 1972 Summer Olympics. It is located directly on the lake, downstream from the Olympic swimming hall. The arena can accommodate 2,000 guests and the concerts in summer are very popular – all events have free admission and usually take place in glorious summer weather. Young musicians and bands can apply to perform every year. You can listen to new folk music, world music, jazz and classical music.

Artist Jam Summer Festival

Last year, Artist Jam held a small open-air festival at Theatron Westpark . The basic idea is to network musicians and offer them a venue. This year, the spectacular music event will last for two days. Guests can look forward to a full music programme, live jam sessions, a big flash mob and lots of open stage for free jamming.

Superbloom Festival

After the première last year, the Superbloom Festival will take place again this year in the Olympiapark (Olympic Park) and the Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) . The international line-up includes stars and bands such as Calvin Harris, Louis Tomlinson, Cro, Sam Smith, Shirin David, RIN, Loreen, Tream, und Tokio Hotel. The supporting programme offers performances, workshops, talks and much more.

„Celebrate sustainably together“ this is the motto of the PULS Open Air Festival. In addition to the idyllic atmosphere and the exciting workshops, the castle grounds in Kaltenberg offer a wide variety of musical styles from young artists such as Paula Hartmann, siovo, Graf Fidi and many more. PLUS Open Air celebrates its 25th anniversary. The motto is once again "Celebrate, feel good and relax" at the Vöttinger Weiher in Freising. The event prioritises charm and a family atmosphere, so everyone, from young to old, is welcome.

The techno and electro sound festival “Greenfields“ takes place on the grounds of the racecourse in Riem. The festival looks back on a proud 20-year history. Andhim, Ben Klock, DJ Hell, Innellea, Joseph Capriati, Karotte, Korolova, Mind Against, René Vaitl and Sven Väth will spin the turntables.

Puch Open Air Festival 2024

The Puch Open Air has its roots in a group of befriended bands who decided to organise a joint concert in 1989. While flyers were distributed back then, today the festival is advertised with posters by the Herburg Wieland agency, which also designs campaigns for the Vienna Burgtheater, among others. The name of the festival has remained, only the venue has changed to Biohof Lehmair (organic farm) in Jetzendorf. In the early 1990s , The Notwist, DJ Hell and Tocotronic performed here.

Sportfreunde Stiller joined them in 1998. The Puch festival has been presented by the Zündfunk station of the Bavarian Radio since 1994. It is deliberately kept petite and exquisite. This is how the radio producers from Zündfunk sum up the special atmosphere: “On the meadow with your picnic blanket, a bottle of red wine and something to eat from one of the small stalls on the grounds, you're guaranteed to feel comfortable right from the start. The most beautiful little festival in Bavaria.“

Schall im Schilf – Sound in the reeds

In the north of Munich, at Garchinger See (lake), DJs Agy3na, BASHKKA, Carista, Fadi Mohem, Jamie Tiller, Job Jobse, Konrad Wehrmeister, Ogazón, sianza B2B, Keriner and Sophie Pschorr will spin the sound for dancing under the open sky. There will be regional vegetarian food trucks and the after-show party will kick off at Blitz Music Club Munich.

Traumtänzer Festival (Dream Dancer Festival)

For the organisers of this festival, “dancing“ means “dreaming with your feet“. The Hausler Hof in Hallbergmoos near Munich Airport offers enough space for camping and a total of four stages for international and local DJ stars to perform. The special feature is the supporting programme with yoga workshops, a traders' market and food stalls.

You can also have fun without techno! As the name suggests, the BrassWiesn is dedicated to Bavarian folk music in the best sense of the word. The music festival in the north of Munich combines traditional brass music with modern rhythms; international acts play alongside well-known bands. Performing in 2023 are: LaBrassBande, Oimara, Seiler & Speer, DeSchoWieda, Cuba Boarisch 2.0, Die Fexer, Alpensound, In Oana Dur and many more. You can get a good impression by watching last year’s aftermovie: Haindling and the band appear briefly in the picture, while the backdrop with alpine huts and maypole reflects the special character of this open-air party. Happy people, some traditionally dressed in lederhosen and dirndls (women's traditional Bavarian dress), accompanied by the Fäatschbänkler's song “Glücklich muss man einfach sein“.

Isle of Summer Beach

The Isle of Summer series ends with the Isle of Summer Beach on 3 August 2024. The Isle of Summer Beach is held at the Munich Beach Resort. On the sand, next to the regatta and under the trees, you can dance and party to the music of AKA AKA, Dominik Eulberg, Klaudia Gawlas, Moonbootica and Stella Bossi.

Back to the Woods

13 hours of open air on four stages followed by an after-show at the Blitz Club in Munich on 26 August at the Garching research centre. Performers at the festival will include: DJ Nobu, Gabrielle Kwarteng, Nene H, Sam Goku and Young Marco.

Deep in Forest

A trip to Starnberg is worthwhile, not only because of the beautiful Starnberger See (lake), which is very close to Munich, but also for the Deep in Forest Festival. On September 2, the last of a total of three festivals in the summer of 2023 will take place on a site by the lake, in the middle of the forest. The programme includes Deep House, Downtempo and Techhouse.

Date : May 4 and June 15, 2024 Venue : Starnberg, Mühlthal 124, 82319 Starnberg How to get there : By car via the A 95 or by paid shuttle bus from the Starnberg Nord (S6) suburban station to the festival site. International Schiller-Days

Focused on the work of playwright Friedrich Schiller, this festival is held once every two years at National Theater in Mannheim. This year’s festival takes place June 22–July 2.

Rheingau Music Festival

Founded in 1987, Rheingau Music Festival highlights international music. Concerts take place at culturally significant venues throughout the region, June 24–Sept. 2.

Ruhr Piano Festival

The largest piano festival in the world, Ruhr Piano Festival runs April 24 through mid-July. Acclaimed pianists and upcoming young artists showcase their skills in venues throughout the region.

Music festivals in Germany are generally synonymous with summertime, huge parties, and the best traditions of music in all its genres. Tens of thousands of revelers head out into the country or even visit classic industrial sites for their kicks. There’s definitely a little something here for everyone!

The Germany music festival scene runs a range of techno, Rock, metal, and all the various kinds of electronic music/ EDM. And many of these music festivals in Germany invites huge masses from all over Europe – one EDM festival in Germany claims an attendance of over 200,000 over a weekend. Here’s the rundown on some of the biggest and best, and a couple that are just plain unique for their concept.

Top 20 German Music Festivals 2023

1) Airbeat One Festival 2024

Join 40,000 other electronica and EDM music fans – and how appropriate that it’s at the airport! Names like David Guetta, Dmitri Vegas, and other top DJs and acts regularly share the headline spaces here.

Each year, the festival takes a major city and themes itself along with the sites and visual aesthetic that make it iconic. The theme for 2023 was the country of Italy – which means lots of stages and sets that resemble the iconic landmarks and buildings of that country. What visual appeal will be the highlight? It’s anyone’s guess.

2) Lollapalooza Berlin 2024

Lollapalooza is one of the most biggest and most iconic US festivals , and it’s recently begun touring the globe with editions in several different countries in Europe. They’ve chosen Berlin as their home-base in Germany, and each year it seems to get bigger and better than the previous year!

The lineup, though primarily mainstream/rock, in reality, is multi-genre and celebrates the edgy elements of the hip hop and indie scenes as well. The festival runs for two days, and the stadium-connected venue gives you some idea of the crowd you can expect. It is befitting of the capital city and a calendar highlight. It’s one of the most epic festivals in Berlin and I’m hoping to make it myself for the 2024 edition!

“Lollapalooza Berlin is far more than a stripped-down music festival. Highlights like Kidzapalooza, a festival at the festival welcoming all kids, Der Grüne Kiez (Green Neighbourhood) dealing with topics like sustainability and social responsibility and the spectacular Lolla Fun Fair celebrating oddity, acrobatics as well as art and installations all over the festival grounds take the festival experience to a whole new level.”

3) Hurricane Festival 2024

When: June 21-23, 2024

Hurricane and Southside festival (mentioned below) are twin festivals happening concurrently. This arrangement seems to be somewhat popular in Germany, as you’ll see below. SEEED,  Martin Garrix, Kings of Leon, and The Killers were the headliners in 2023 at this multi-genre, multi-day fest, which also shares the same lineup in both locations.

Together, the twin fests entertain around 130,000 people, with a superbly curated combo of top international and German acts. There’s even a space for new discoveries, which makes it the perfect variety lineup.

4) Southside Festival 2024

Happening at the same time as Hurricane Festival, and has an absolutely stacked line-up for 3-days of incredible music spanning dozens of genres! Past headliners included Martin Garrixx, Kings of Leon, Rise Against, The Killers, Twenty One Pilots, and so many more!

5) Love Family Park – Open Air Festival 2024

Family. Techno. Emotions. No fairy tales – just good music.

Techno is the name of the game here. While the regular spot for hard techno and EDM is the underground, FP takes the genre to the summer outdoors. It only lasts one day, so there’s no excuse to simply not make the most of the greatest techno of the summer.

You won’t be lonely, as you enjoy the range of minimal to pure techno along with 20 000 of your closest friends, of course.

6) MAYDAY Festival Germany 2024

By now you might be getting the feeling that techno and EDM is a major sector for German summer festivals. MAYDAY is 32 years old, so one of the grandaddies of the EDM festivals Germany has to offer.

It has more pedigree – the promoters of MAYDAY are also the ones behind Nature One, Exodus, and Syndicate – they seem to know what they’re doing. And yes, Mayday doesn’t always happen in May. That said, it’s a European institution, befitting its status as one of the grandest.

7) Melt Festival 2024

This German music festival gets special points for its unique setting. A former coal mine serves as the backdrop – they’ve even left several structures in place that call back to the industry that made its home in the City of Iron.

Perhaps fittingly, the music here looks outside the boundaries of the norm. It’s an alternative music festival, celebrating the fringe artists and genres that inform creativity, high and low fashion, and even alt lifestyles. And it’s been doing so for 20 years!

8) MS Dockville Festival 2024

Island life isn’t something you’d expect from a German festival. But this is an island in the middle of the Elbe, and whoever had the idea to do something here deserves a cocktail.

Set outdoors and essentially in the woods, the idea here is simply to engage with artists that sit outside the mainstream. That means that the appeal isn’t the most famous artists or the most downloaded. It’s about an unusual and passionate music lover.

More than likely you’ll see something here that you can talk about for days and weeks afterward – that’s beside the awesome sunshine, beach, and woods.

9) Nature One Festival 2024

Those familiar with the previously mentioned MAYDAY will no doubt love this festival from the same crowd. It’s a bit younger, but carries the same vibe and has actually grown bigger than its older cousin.

In keeping with the trend to find interesting places to stage a show, the venue is a former missile base. There are 20 stages to choose your poison from, and there’s a huge crowd of almost 65 000 attending each year.

10) Wacken Open Air Rock Festival 2024

When:   July 31 – 3 August , 2024

Where: Wacken

Wacken is arguably one of the most well-known festivals on this list. It’s certainly an annual pilgrimage for loads of rock, hard rock, and metal fans from around the continent.

Nearly 100 000 metalheads make the journey to Schleswig-Holstein in the German north, and the biggest names in the genre are always on the bill. If you’re not familiar with pits, stay away from the front and center.

Techno outdoors is a way of life in summertime Germany. PollerWiesen offers lawns, beaches, woods, and sunshine to accompany a top lineup of DJs spinning techno, house and electro beats.

Running since 1993, it has occasionally traveled to other cities, but will once again make its home in Dortmund in 2024. PollerWiesen draws around 12 000 people, so it’s comparatively small and intimate – at least, compared to some others on this list.

13) Rock am Ring & Rock im Park 2024

Another classic German music festival is split into two events happening at the same time – one in Mendig, the other in Nurnberg. They share the same lineup, though, so it’s mainly an issue of letting two separate crowds in different parts of the country enjoy the same show.

Since 1985, huge rock names and global stars have shown up here, with appropriately massive crowds enjoying the music and the atmosphere. At last official count, nearly 90 000 fans attended the event. It’s arguably the premier mainstream rock festival of the year.

14) Sea You Beach Festival 2024

Where: Tunisee, Freiburg

If you fancy a lakeside getaway as your scene when you attend a major festival, Sea You is – erm – for you. The “Beach Republic” is a fabulous weekend on the shores of Lake Tunisee (“see” in German translates to “Sea”).

The fest is appealing for its additional activities like watersports and a beach-like atmosphere to accompany the house and techno beats. You can dance, or you can waterski! Why not do both? 

15) SEMF – Stuttgart Electronic Music Festival

If you can’t wait for a summer fix – most of these take place in summer – then SEMF is your solution. While most techno fests wait for the long days of summer, SEMF taps into a December Christmas spirit, warming your bones the old-fashioned way – with dancing!

Currently scheduled for a comeback after a hiatus in 2022, the festival had at one point claimed to be the biggest dance festival in Germany. Can it reclaim its lofty position upon its return? Time will tell. I’m betting on a big “yes”.  

16) Syndicate Festival 2024

As metal is to rock, so Syndicate’s musical style is to techno and house. Here’s where you’ll feel the energy of a harder dance beat. To suit the mood, the light show and staging reflect the culture of raves in Germany and EDM rapture that feels edgier, and more serious in a way.

Once the overnight sounds of the beat take you it will be hard to resist. The 20 000 fans of hardstyle and hardcore techno will be in seventh heaven. You can almost feel the thudding beat just by talking about it.

17) Time Warp Germany

Get the summer season off to a good techno start. Timed Warp is regarded as the great kickoff to the Euro techno party season. It’s now celebrating its 30th Anniversary and looks like it will continue to lead the summer line of dance parties.

It has occasionally ventured beyond Germany, with editions in Turin, Milan, Zurich, and Prague among those highlights. It does however make a home in Germany, with a partner show in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

18) Echelon Open Air & Indoor Festival 2024

MSU’s Thompson details country music, patriotism connection in new book

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Joseph M. Thompson, an assistant professor in Mississippi State’s Department of History, concludes the 2023-2024 MSU Faculty Book Talk series next week with a conversation about the intricate connection between American military life and the popular country music genre.

Thompson presents a lecture on his book “Cold War Country: How Nashville’s Music Row and the Pentagon Created the Sound of American Patriotism,” 3:30 p.m., April 19 in Mitchell Memorial Library’s John Grisham Room. The event is free and open to the public.

Released April 2, “Cold War Country” discusses familiar stars including Roy Acuff, Elvis Presley and George Strait and explains how the relationship between Music Row and the Pentagon “helped shape not only the evolution of popular music but also race relations, partisanship and images of the United States abroad.”

“These events are great opportunities for faculty to share their research and for the community to learn about the research happening on campus,” said Eric Vivier, an MSU associate professor of English who is a faculty fellow with MSU’s Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College and director of the book talk series.

MSU’s College of Arts and Sciences includes more than 5,000 students, 300 full-time faculty members, nine doctoral programs and 25 academic majors offered in 14 departments. Visit  www.cas.msstate.edu for more information.
