Scandinavia Cruises

Discover Historic European Wonders on a Scandinavia Cruise

Tabs View Cruises

  • View Cruises

On a Scandinavia cruise, you’ll discover the towering fjords, fascinating Viking history, and opulent architectural wonders of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. Embark on an unforgettable adventure through the Norwegian fjords, or visit the vibrant city of Oslo. See Copenhagen’s whimsical Tivoli Gardens and explore its decadent palaces.  Ride a gondola to the top of the world’s largest spherical building and stroll along the historic district’s narrow, cobblestone streets in Stockholm.

On a luxury cruise to Scandinavia with Celebrity Cruises, you’ll discover why this incredible region is home to some of the happiest people on Earth—and experience some of that joy yourself.

Scandinavia Cruise Highlights

Art and design.

Minimalist Scandinavian design has swept the world, influencing cafes, shops, and our homes for decades. While you’re traveling through beautiful cities like Oslo and Copenhagen, you’ll quickly see the contrast between early Medieval opulence and the modernist, sleek style that dominates today. Stop in Oslo’s National Museum or the Designmuseum in Copenhagen, which both explore the origins of design and architecture in the region.

European History

Discover Viking stories and preserved ships at the Vasa Maritime Museum in Stockholm and the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. Time travel to the Medieval period as you stroll the cobblestone streets of Copenhagen, and admire the statue of the Little Mermaid, based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. Castle-hop across Denmark’s capital, stopping at Amalienborg, Rosenborg Castle, or Christiansborg Palace.

Scenic Waterways

On a Scandinavian vacation, exploring the region’s incredible fjords and picturesque canals is a must. Journey through majestic landscapes and marvel at the breathtaking views on a cruise to the Norwegian fjords . In Copenhagen and Stockholm, boat down serene canals and admire the cities’ beauty from a unique vantage point.

Featured Ports

Stockholm, sweden.

Enjoy the colorful, cobblestone streets of Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, or Old Town, where you can discover centuries of Swedish history or shop in chic, modern boutiques. For an active adventure, go kayaking along the city’s canals and paddle through the city at your own pace.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The myths and lore of Copenhagen and its laidback ambiance have attracted international tourists for years. Visit the Little Mermaid statue commemorating Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale. Stroll alongside the Nyhavn Harbour, admiring the wooden ships floating in the calm waters. Relax and play at Tivoli Gardens, a perfect activity for all ages. Come see why Denmark is consistently rated one of the happiest places in the world.

Oslo, Norway

Viking history runs deep in Oslo. At the Viking Ship Museum, you can see preserved Viking ships on display. Art lovers, spend an afternoon surrounded by eccentric and classic sculptures at Vigeland Park. Museum hop from Oslo’s Natural Museum to the Edvard Munch Museum, which is home to the world-famous painting “The Scream.” During your day in port, visit the Ice Bar, made completely of ice.

Scandinavia Cruise Itineraries

Spend 7 to 13 nights at sea discovering the wonders of Scandinavia and beyond on a luxury cruise. Explore Norway’s fjords cruise to the region’s capital cities. Set sail from Rotterdam or Amsterdam, Netherlands, or Southampton, England aboard Celebrity Apex or Silhouette.

Itineraries

Why sail on a scandinavia cruise with celebrity.

On a cruise to Scandinavia with Celebrity Cruises, you’ll sail from one fascinating port of call to another aboard one of our luxury cruise ships, where world-class dining, luxuriously appointed accommodations, and exciting venues await. Order your favorite cocktail at an ice-covered bar in port, then at the dazzling Martini Bar on board. Saunter along the storied streets of Scandinavia’s capital cities, then relax in the comfort of your stateroom or suite. On one of our luxury cruises, everything is done for you, so all you have to do is relax and enjoy the ride.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORDIC CRUISES

Just in case you want to learn more about cruise packages or Nordic Visitor destinations, we’ve collected the most requested queries and answered them here. If you want details on our company and booking processes, then check out our general FAQs or booking information page .

1. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE POPULAR?

Northern Europe is a popular holiday destination for so many reasons! It is a region brimming with gorgeous scenery and vibrant cultures, with the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of tours and activities.

From the fjords of Norway to the ice fields of Greenland, and from the world-class museums of Scandinavia to the Celtic heritage of Scotland, there is simply so much to uncover in Northern Europe. Best of all, you can visit the region year-round, with each season offering its own appeal.

Northern Europe is so diverse yet it is very easy to travel around, so you can see more than one country in the same trip. Flight times between destinations are short, although you can also journey by road, rail or cruise for scenic views along the way.

What’s more, the Nordic countries – that’s Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – regularly rank in the top 10 safest places in the world to visit. This is partly because they generally have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety, among other reasons.

Another plus is that most people in the Nordics speak English, which means you can easily interact with the locals if you are an English speaker yourself. In Scotland and Ireland, English is the main language.

2. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE GREAT TO VISIT ON A CRUISE?

You can easily travel around Northern Europe by cruise as there are fast, reliable and efficient links within the region. For example, Scandinavian cruise tours are very popular as they offer you the chance to visit a number of destinations across the Baltic and North Seas.

Cruising in Norway is a great option as you can visit various fjords and explore the country’s coastal landscapes. It’s also a fantastic way to discover the Arctic region, travelling aboard the reputable Hurtigruten cruise vessel.

In Greenland, cruising is the best way to reach remote corners of the country as they cannot be accessed by road. For a real adventure, spend a few days aboard a cruise to marvel at the Ilulissat Icefjord, whale watch in Sisimiut, and see mountains towering above the sea at Maniitsoq.

3. WHAT ARE THE TOP SIGHTS IN NORTHERN EUROPE?

Some of the top sights in Northern Europe include glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland, and fjords, mountains and valleys in Norway. Sweden flaunts lushly forested islands and countryside, while Scotland and Ireland are blessed with dramatic national parks and coastlines.

Find out the best places to visit in Northern Europe with our insider guides:

  • The best places to visit in Scandinavia
  • The best things to see and do in Norway
  • The best places to visit in Iceland
  • The best places to visit in Scotland
  • The best places to visit in Ireland

4. WHAT IS THE BEST NORDIC CRUISE?

There are so many Nordic cruises to choose from, so finding the best one depends on what you want to do and how much time you have.

On Scandinavian cruise tours , you can visit Sweden, Denmark and Norway on the same trip. You could spend a week visiting the three Scandinavian countries, or stay for longer to explore the region at leisure and even incorporate other destinations into your tour.

A Baltic cruise is a great option if you want to experience a mix of Northern European cities and cultures.

Take your pick from various Baltic Sea cruise ports to stop off at. You might like to begin in Helsinki, Finland. You can then hop over to Tallinn, Estonia before sailing to Stockholm, Sweden. You may also wish to consider St Petersburg, Russia, as a port of call.

Alternatively, you could focus on exploring Norway by cruise . The west coast is 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) long, so there is plenty to discover! A Hurtigruten cruise will take you to glittering fjords and picturesque shorelines, ranging from 2 to 7 days at sea with shore excursions along the way.

How about an adventure to the far north? If you love immersing yourself in wild, remote landscapes, then opt for a Greenland cruise . Greenland is one of the last unexplored frontiers in the world, with its icy tundras, vast glaciers and Arctic wildlife.

Your voyage could whisk you to the hard-to-reach corners of Greenland. Cruise along glacier lagoons to see icebergs calving into the water, spot whales in the sea, and admire mountainous scenery from the water.

5. WHAT IS A SELF-GUIDED TOUR?

On a self-guided tour, you travel independently without a guide or a group. You’re certainly not alone, though, as your dedicated Nordic Visitor travel consultant has arranged everything before your arrival. They provide you with a personalised itinerary complete with tickets, bookings and recommendations.

We have a 24/7 emergency helpline as well, so should anything unexpected arise, we’re only a phone call away.

6. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO CRUISE NORWAY’S FJORDS?

Each travel season offers different reasons to visit the Norwegian fjords, so there is no “bad time” to go! However we can give you a good idea of what it will be like in Norway at different times of the year, so that you can decide when is best for your trip.

Visit Norway’s fjords in the spring and summer (May to August) for long daylight hours and warmer weather. This is the ideal time to see the fjords surrounded with greenery and to join bird watching or kayaking excursions. You could also experience the midnight sun at the height of summer.

Alternatively, chasing the northern lights in Norway might be on your wish list. Many travellers head to Northern Norway hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive “dancing” aurora borealis.

In which case, we recommend visiting in the autumn and winter, between September and March. You’ll need the right conditions to catch sight of them, such as solar activity, dark skies, and low light pollution. Learn more about the best time and place to see the northern lights in Norway on our blog.

Whether you see the northern lights or not, cruising the Norwegian fjords in winter is ideal if you want to avoid the crowds. The shoulder season (autumn and early spring) is also a good time to go as top attractions are quieter, with fewer visitors compared to the summer.

Whichever time of year you prefer to travel, we have reliable departure dates and there are cruise tours available year-round. You can find out more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

7. DO I NEED A VISA FOR A BALTIC CRUISE?

Whether you need a visa or not will depend on where you are travelling from. For example, you do not need a visa for a Baltic cruise if you are a citizen of the United Kingdom or USA. For all other nationalities, we recommend getting in touch with your local consulate to check.

It’s also worth mentioning that you can visit St Petersburg without a visa for up to 72 hours if you book a package cruise tour. Usually British and American citizens require a visa for Russia, but booking a Baltic cruise is one of the few exceptions.

8. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

In most cases, yes, you can view and select Nordic Visitor arrival dates online. You can always add extra days to your itinerary before or after the cruise.

9. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Yes, you can extend all Nordic Visitor packages with extra days. Every tour can be customised by adding days to the beginning or end of your trip. You can also add extra days within your itinerary if you are travelling on a self-drive or private tour .

For cruises there are fixed departure dates as the vessel must adhere to an itinerary. But of course you can add days before or after your cruise experience. The same applies to small group tours .

10. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

We recommend you look over flights for timings and prices, but hold off purchasing until your package has been secured. Once your dedicated travel consultant has introduced themselves and sent over the confirmation email, you will have all of the information you need to pick and purchase flights.

11. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

You should always bring sensible layers to add or remove when travelling in Northern Europe. The weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • Warm socks (especially for winter travel)
  • Sunscreen (for summer trips)

An umbrella will also come in handy, and cruise passengers may wish to bring binoculars to get a closer look at the fjords and local wildlife.

For a detailed list of what to bring and how to prepare for your trip, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway , Scotland and Ireland .

Whether you want to book a cruise or ask about updating a package with extra days and nights, get in touch with our travel consultants.

Understanding the midnight sun.

The Midnight Sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the polar regions during the summer when the Earth's tilt causes these regions to receive more amounts of sunlight. It results in the sun remaining visible even at midnight.

Scandinavia Cruise Itineraries

Scandinavia cruises depart from a variety of ports both in the UK and from within the region itself. The UK’s embarkation ports are Southampton, Dover and Portsmouth, with voyages from these places will entailing a full day crossing the North Sea. Departure ports in Scandinavia include Copenhagen, Sweden, Bergen and occasionally Oslo.

The average length of a Scandinavia cruise is between 7 and 14 nights. Longer voyages will also include stops at ports in Baltic cities such as St Petersburg and Tallinn. Scandinavia cruise itineraries will typically call at a combination of cities, towns and harbours, with the most frequently featured being Visby in Sweden, Skagen in Denmark and Kristiansand in Norway.

The most popular Scandinavia cruise itineraries are those that sail the Norwegian Fjords. Departures are available from the UK in Dover or Southampton, or Bergen in Norway. The majority of cruise lines will offer these on a 7 or 8-night basis, but longer journeys that venture further up the Norwegian coastline are also available.

The best time for Scandinavia cruises

The best time for Scandinavia cruises is during the summer. During June, July and early September, the Scandinavia welcomes warmer weather and longer daylight hours, which allow for a more comfortable time when exploring ashore.

Cruises that explore the region outside of this period tend to be more expedition-orientated, with operators offering extensive sailings deep into the Arctic Circle. While the weather is colder and the hours of daylight fewer, exploring Scandinavia in the autumn and winter gives you the best chance of seeing nature’s most spectacular light show, Aurora Borealis .

Cruise lines that offer Scandinavia Cruises

The majority of cruise lines offer Scandinavia cruises, with some choosing to dedicate itineraries to the region and others including Scandinavian ports on sailings in the Baltic and Northern Europe . Operators like Oceania Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Cunard all offer immersive cruise experiences in Scandinavia, while all-inclusive lines such as Silversea and Regent Seven Seas are perfect should you wish to enjoy the very highest standards of accommodation, dining and facilities onboard.

To explore Norway in-depth, choose to cruise with Hurtigruten . Founded in 1893, the Norwegian operator has spent years travelling the country’s coastline and offers an array of unique itineraries stopping both at marquee ports and hidden ports other cruise lines seldom visit.

Gamla Stan (Old town of Stockholm)

Norway in a nutshell®, flåm railway (flåmsbana), fjords in norway, senate square.

A day-by-day plan to guide your Nordic adventure.

Day 1: WELCOME TO FINLAND

When you arrive at Helsinki Airport, make your way to city centre. Many travellers opt to take public transportation, but we also offer direct private transfers. Take advantage of this first day on your own to discover this Nordic gem at your own pace, and eat at one of the many delicious restaurants. We recommend visiting Senate Square , Uspenski Cathedral , and the Old Market Hall to become acquainted with Finnish history and culture.

Spend the night in Helsinki.

Day 2: EXPLORE HELSINKI & SAIL TO SWEDEN

Spend the early part of the day continuing to see Helsinki before boarding a cruise to Stockholm . Helsinki is known for its creativity and, in 2012, the city was awarded the UNESCO “City of Design” title, boasting its very own Design District and “design tram route” (Line 6). Some notable city landmarks to visit include Sibelius Park, Finlandia Hall , the Finnish National Opera House , and Parliament House . In the afternoon, you will board the cruise to Stockholm , Sweden’s capital. During your time at sea, take full advantage of the on-board amenities including cafes, restaurants, and shops and spend the night in one of the cruises’ comfortable cabins.

Spend the night on the cruise.

Day 3: SAIL TO SPLENDID STOCKHOLM

Savour the maritime scenery during breakfast as the ship navigates through Sweden’s Archipelago, a collection of over 30,000 islands and inlets. Upon your arrival in Stockholm , make your way to the hotel and then enjoy some time exploring the city centre. We recommend, enjoying some shopping on the well-known pedestrian street Drottninggatan and taking a stroll in the surrounding area of Östermalm . There you will find numerous shops, cafés, and restaurants for a perfect introduction to Swedish culture.

Spend the night in Stockholm.

Day 4: THE CHARMS OF SWEDISH CULTURE

Today you will explore the heart of scenic Stockholm. We recommend exploring the capital by foot, visiting attractions such as the Old Town (Gamla Stan) , where you will find the Royal Palace , the parliament, old churches, beautiful cobble stone streets and medieval houses.

After some time at Gamla Stan, you can take a short ferry ride to the nearby island Djurgården , a cultural oasis with something for everyone. Here you will find the kitschy Abba Museum , the Nordic Museum , the Gröna Lund amusement park, and the Skansen open-air museum. It is ideal to spend the afternoon here, exploring the grounds and many attractions.

Day 5: TRAVEL FROM STOCKHOLM TO LOVELY COPENHAGEN

Today you will take a short flight to Copenhagen . After settling in at your hotel, go for a walk along the enchanting old harbour area of Nyhavn , where you will see colourful houses and lively restaurants among the docked boats. Walk the narrow side streets, visit some shops and try out the traditional Danish open-faced sandwich, Smørrebrød. In the evening, visit the amusement park Tivoli Gardens , which has something for everyone. It’s a lovely place to admire the architecture and gardens and to enjoy some carnival rides.

Spend the night in Copenhagen.

*For those interested, we offer the option of travelling by train instead of flight between Stockholm and Denmark. For more details click the optional activities.

Day 6: A DAY IN CAPTIVATING COPENHAGEN

You have the whole day to explore Copenhagen . We recommend seeing the city by foot, visiting landmarks like Amalienborg Palace , Christiansborg Palace , and the famous Little Mermaid statue. An optional cruise from the harbour is also highly recommended as you can appreciate the architecture and beauty of the city by water. Next, stroll Ströget street for some shopping and grab something to eat at Torvehallerne food hall.

Day 7: SET SAIL FOR NORWAY

Spend the morning touring Copenhagen. Some interesting attractions include the observatory of The Round Tower , the most famous church in Copenhagen, Church of Our Saviour , as well as the impeccable King’s Garden, and the regal Rosenborg Castle . In the early afternoon, it’s time to board your cruise to Oslo, which sails gently up the Kattegat Sund on its way to Norway’s capital city. You can enjoy dinner in one of the restaurants, check out the entertainment on board or just relax and watch the sunset from the deck.

Day 8: EXPLORE ENCHANTING OSLO

After the ship docks, get ready to see the best of Oslo. The city is quite walkable and we recommend exploring by foot and the convenience of public transport. Notable attractions include visiting the Fram Polar Ship Museum and spending some time along the beautiful harbour area. Other highlights include the beautiful  Vigeland Sculpture Park , the  Royal Palace ,  Akershus fortress , Oslo City Hall, and Karl Johans street.

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 9: NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL - THE FLÅM RAILWAY

Get an early start and head to Oslo Central Station, where you’ll begin the Norway in a Nutshell® railway journey towards Bergen, with an overnight stop in  Flåm . This train ride takes you over Norway’s “mountainous rooftops”, through charming villages like Gol and  Geilo .

In Myrdal, you’ll switch trains to the famous  Flåm Railway  (Flåmsbana) for an incredible ride to the beautiful village of Flåm. Enjoy a relaxing day in Flåm, where you can follow one of the many hiking trails in the mountains around the village, or participate in an optional activity, such as kayaking, fjord sightseeing or visiting the Stegastein platform.

Spend the night in Flåm.

We recommend booking luggage transfer for the travel between Oslo and Bergen.

Day 10: NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL TO BERGEN

Today, you’ll board a boat to sail through  Aurlandsfjord  into the World Heritage-listed Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in all of Europe. This is perhaps the most beautiful arm of  Sognefjord , with its mighty waterfalls and small farms clinging to the steep mountainsides. The boat docks in Gudvangen, from where you’ll be transported by bus to  Voss  to board the train for the last stretch of the journey to  Bergen .

Spend the night in Bergen.

Day 11: THE CAPITAL OF THE FJORDS

Despite being an international city, Bergen, “The Capital of the Fjords”, has all the charms of a small town. Here you’ll find  Bryggen , a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with remarkably preserved old houses, a lively fish and flower market, cable cars offering stunning views, great museums and more.  We recommend riding the  Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen to enjoy the panoramic view of the city or a cable car up Mt. Ulriken. Bergen is also known for its museums dedicated to history within trade and fisheries, architecture, musical art and contemporary art.

Spend another night in Bergen.

Day 12: DEPARTURE FROM BERGEN

When it’s time for your trip to come to an end, make your way to Bergen-Flesland Airport. You can either take the airport bus from one of the many departure points in the Bergen city centre or you can take a taxi directly from your hotel to Bergen-Flesland Airport. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can choose to enjoy some last-minute shopping, visit one of Bergen‘s many museums or relax at a café, enjoying the last few moments of this amazing journey.

For those departing from Oslo, we offer direct train transfer back to Oslo. Please keep in mind you might need to book an additional night if your flight is early during the day.

Optional extras

We recommend adding your extra activities to the tour now for the best booking experience and to secure your spot, as activities are likely to sell out.

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Completely seamless

Very well thought out by Nordic Visitor. Completely seamless for the entire trip with layovers of perfect length. In the two larger cities, the hop on and off bus stop was a block away.

Best of scandinavia & finland cruise, september 2023, a great experience.

Overall, this Best of Scandinavia trip was a great experience, especially Norway in a Nutshell and the full-day fjord trip. Well-planned, with varied modes of travel between countries and good locations for our hotels. Each voucher, ticket and arrangement for every part of our trip was accurate and included in our packet of provided materials. The suggested city touring itineraries were informative; the directions provided for accessing our travels were very helpful.

Brian, United States

Best of scandinavia & finland cruise, july 2023, loved working with our travel consultant.

We love Nordic Visitor and recommend the company all the time to friends and family. This trip, a customised independent tour, was arranged before COVID, and we had to cancel when the borders didn't open in a timely fashion and another planned trip intervened. When we were ready to reschedule, we contacted Ari and he recreated the earlier itinerary. Loved working with him--always responsive and helpful!

Barbara, United States

Best of scandinavia & finland cruise, august 2023, excellent accommodation.

We were very happy with all aspects of our trip. The quality of the accommodation was excellent and their locations within the cities was also very good.

Christopher, Canada

Best of scandinavia & finland cruise, june 2023, great communication.

Easy to book, great "extras", great communication, easy process once we were on the trip to use vouchers and easy to follow directions etc. Already looking to book again.

Everything went according to plan

Everything went according to plan. The variety of transportation was very good. All hotels were clean and in city centres. All breakfasts were excellent and a great start to each day.

Skagen is first of all great nature, the oceans and the sand dunes make a great landscape. The closeness to two oceans makes the weather rough sometimes, but there is always fresh air and we had sunshine most of the time. Dining at the harbor is just great, due to the large fishing harbor you get really great, fresh fish and can sit outside the cozy, Skagen style, buildings. We rented a summer cottage, newly renovated, and had a great time grilling our dinners on the terrace, enjoying a bottle of wine and each other. Skagen is the northernmost point of Denmark, dividing the North Sea and Kattegat, the entrance to the Baltic Ocean. The light in Skagen is famous, a lot of artists come to Skagen to paint pictures, and we visited Skagen Museum, which has an excellent exhibition of paintings. A must in Skagen is the sunsets over the ocean, never the same, but always fascinating to see the colors changing as the sun sets in the ocean. As the land between the two oceans only is a couple of kilometers wide at Skagen, you can see the sun rise over one ocean and set in the other, a unique experience every time, even after watching a thousand times.

'Beauty on Water' or 'Venice of the North' - these phrases sum up the Baltic allure of a city built on 14 islands in an archipelago of some 24,000. Founded by Birger Jarl in 1252, Stockholm owes its existence to water, developing as a transit point for goods moving between the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren. A strategic and trade centre, the fortified town grew during the Middle Ages when it acquired much of its picturesque architecture. However, it only became the national capital in 1634, during the Thirty Years War, when Sweden was an imperial power. The Vasa monarchs left Stockholm with a Baroque magnificence that would grace a far grander setting than today's peaceful capital of a small Nordic nation: splendid palaces, gold and ironwork, dignified ceremonial and rich royal collections. Baroque monumental stucco blends beautifully with the colourful plastered walls of the medieval Old Town. The clear northern light falling across these surfaces, especially during the endless northern summer evenings, intensifies the freshness and cleanliness of even the most venerable districts. Modern Stockholm is a bustling business hub for the entire Baltic region yet anglers can still catch salmon in the centre of the city. Sweden was the envy of less dynamic economies during the 1960s and 1970s, with Stockholm a trading and commercial centre to be reckoned with, as anyone who has ever used an Ericsson mobile phone or an Ikea chair can testify. Swedish design genius, aesthetic and technical know-how, has ensured that many professionals in the creative and IT fields look to Stockholm for inspiration and partnership. Prosperous, efficient and well-scrubbed, Stockholm balances its economic vigour with a remarkably unspoilt natural charm. With 30% of the city area made up of waterways and another 30% parks and green spaces, it has perhaps the freshest air and widest lungs of any European capital. But it has nightlife and a restaurant culture that belie any impression of a quiet garden city; Stockholm has almost as many restaurants per capita as Paris and a night in the hotspots of Stureplan should be enough to satisfy even the most demanding clubber. Sweden is the world's third most successful exporter of pop music behind the United States and Britain, a process that began with Abba's global success in the 1970s. A good night out here can soon blow away any clichés about Nordic gloom. And Stockholm's 150 or so museums and galleries means there's plenty to do on rainy days. Light on water and pure air may be the strongest impression a visitor carries away from Stockholm, especially in the summer, but they might equally be thinking of a particularly rowdy night in the Pelikan Bar on Södermalm, or hot jazz in the Lydmar Hotel. The entire world may descend on Stockholm each December for the Nobel Prize ceremonies, but they arrive in the winter cold and darkness; the smiles of a summer night are far more inviting for the traveller.

The story of Tallinn is a tale of three cities: an ancient citadel, the old town, and the modern city. Capital of the Estonian Republic, the coastal settlement is almost opposite Helsinki on the Gulf of Finland. The citadel, known as Toompea Castle, sits on a craggy hill peering down on a fascinating amalgam of medieval rooftops and winding cobbled streets, punctuated here and there by graceful spires and turreted towers. Around this ancient core, building continues constantly, and Tallinn today is the major industrial centre in Estonia. Tallinn is now the home of no less than six theatres and is famous throughout the Baltic for its song festivals, where massed choirs sing to packed audiences in a huge open-air stadium. Sailing, too, is an important recreation. Tallinn-made yachts are renowned, and in 1980 the city hosted the yachting events for Moscow's Olympics. Tallinn enjoys a mild climate, with summer 'white nights', when sunset blends into sunrise, rivalling those of St Petersburg.

The walled and cobbled medieval port of Visby is a living relic: more than 40 proud towers and the ruins of great churches attest to Visby's former Hanseatic glories. The contemporary ruins of Drotten, St Nicolai, St Lars and St Carin are all within the town walls and contrast with the old but sound cathedral of St Maria. Gotlands Fornsal is the historical museum with a fine collection of the Gotland picture stones of the pre-Viking period. During the second week of August, costumes and re-enactments commemorate medieval week. Visby is on the island of Gotland, which is serviced by flights from Stockholm and ferries from a number of mainland cities.

Routes North - Nordic travel guide

Scandinavian cruises: 2023 guide

Scandinavia has thousands of miles of dramatic and geologically fascinating coastline. It varies from the steep mountainscapes of the fjords to the long sandy beaches of the Danish islands and the pretty villages of the Stockholm archipelago .

Norway's Geirangerfjord is one of Scandinavia's most beautiful and dramatic cruise destinations.

So taking a cruise makes sense and allows you to view the varied coastline and visit places that may takes hours of driving to get to by road.

But what is it really like to take a cruise in Scandinavia? And which are the best routes to follow? Read on to find out all you need to know about Scandinavian cruises.

What is a Scandinavian cruise?

There are many different types of cruise that visit the Scandinavian coast.

They vary from huge luxury liners with loads of leisure activities that are more like giant floating hotels, to smaller cruise boats, where you can attend lectures from wildlife and natures experts on board.

The most popular countries visited are Norway, Sweden and Denmark, while Nordic cruises add on Finland and Iceland. A few cruises include all five countries.

More usual combinations are Norway and Iceland; Denmark and Sweden; Sweden and Finland; or Sweden, Finland and the Baltic states.

Scandinavian cruises tend to sail round Iceland to view the dramatic scenery.

Cruising has a reputation as being for older people, and it is true that in general more cruises are taken by those over 50.

However,  Scandinavian cruises tend to attract a slightly younger demographic and are popular with young honeymooners, families and those people who may not consider a more traditional type of cruise (to somewhere like the Caribbean, for example).

Some ships, such as the Hurtigruten cruises, double as local ferries and are used by residents to get from one town or village along the coast to another without having to drive miles over mountains and around fjords.

Why choose a Scandinavian cruise?

Since many parts of Scandinavia are steep, mountainous, remote and covered in snow and ice for part of the year, they can be difficult to access by car.

To drive from Stockholm to Helsinki for example, is more than 1000 miles by road, even though the two capitals are less than 250 miles apart by sea. By ship, the journey can be done overnight in a comfortable private cabin.

Cruising is also convenient, allowing you to see multiple locations in one trip without having to spend your whole holiday being at the wheel of a car.

And it needn’t necessarily be that expensive. Eating and drinking in Scandinavia is pricey, whereas on an all-inclusive cruise you have unlimited access to as much food and drink as you want!

Downsides to joining a cruise

Of course, cruising isn’t for everyone and there are some downsides:

  • Lack of flexibility. You have to stick to a set itinerary and often don’t have much time in each port. So you can’t just head off to explore somewhere that you see en route.
  • The crowds in port. If you’re on a large ship it can sometimes take a long time to disembark once the ship docks.
  • Extra costs. Some cruises charge extra for internet access or expect large staff tips. Make sure you check exactly what’s included when you book.
  • You may well put on weight! The all-you-can-eat element of a cruise ship buffet makes it hard to resist eating at all hours.

Best time to go on a Scandinavian cruise

Since Scandinavia is in the north, it enjoys long daylight hours in summer, and 24 hours of daylight for much of June once you’re above the Arctic Circle .

Cruising in Scandinavia in in winter means lots of snow and the northern lights

And, of course, the weather is milder with more sunshine in summer, though there’s often just as much rainfall in the summer months as in winter.

The main reason to choose a winter cruise is to see stunning snowy scenery and the northern lights. The spectacular Aurora Borealis can be seen in northern Scandinavia on a clear night from around October to March.

And indeed some cruise companies, including the Hurtigruten cruise line , are so confident that you’ll see the lights during a winter cruise that if there are no sightings, they’ll give you another trip for free.

For more on the best times to view the lights, check out out guide to seeing the northern lights in Scandinavia .

Top Scandinavian cruise lines

There are plenty of cruise lines that specialise in Scandinavian cruises, plus some international cruise lines that include Scandinavia on their itineraries

Hurtigruten

The original Norwegian fjord supply ships, Hurtigruten cruises run the length of Norway from Bergen up to Kirkenes every day, stopping in at major ports and tiny villages.

Traditionally a lifeline for communities that had no road access, the ships now also have comfortable cabins, some with balconies and hot tubs.

The full route takes seven days, and it’s possible to book just one or two legs of the journey.

Hurtigruten cruises often have expert lecturers on board to talk about the wildlife, culture and geology of the landscape, and they also run full-scale expeditions to far-flung destinations, including the Arctic, the Antarctic and the Galapagos islands.

For more on the Hurtigruten, check out All you need to know about Hurtigruten cruises .

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises have good choice of routes round Scandinavia – we like the look of this mega 29-day cruise from New York via Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard and along the Norwegian fjords to Bergen.

Viking also has a 29-day cruise from London via Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Denmark, Berlin in Germany, Gdansk in Poland and ending up in Stockholm in Sweden.

Tallink Silja

Tallink Silja runs mini-cruises across the Baltic Sea from Stockholm to Helsinki, Tallinn and Riga.

The Stockholm to Helsinki mini cruise includes two nights in a sea-view cabin, two breakfasts and gives you a day in Helsinki to explore.

For more on the Stockholm to Helsinki route, read our guide .

Norwegian-owned but based in the UK, Fred Olsen Line has four ships, all small enough to enter the Norwegian fjords but with the facilities and luxury of a larger ship.

We like its Summertime in Lapland and Scandinavia cruise, which leaves from Newcastle, stops in Aarhus in Denmark, then has a few stops in Sweden including Stockholm and a few stops in Finland, including Lapland and Turku.

Royal Caribbean

One of the largest cruise companies, Royal Caribbean runs a few cruises in Scandinavia including a 9-night Norwegian fjord cruise that starts in Copenhagen and ends in Amsterdam, taking in Oslo and the fjords en route.

Popular Scandinavian cruise routes

If you’re after a classic Norwegian Fjords’ cruise, we recommend the Hurtigruten from Bergen up to Kirkenes close to the Russian border, and back.

The full return journey takes twelve days and stops in at the Geirangerfjord , Ålesund, Trondheim, Bodø, the Lofoten Islands , Tromsø, the North Cape and Kirkenes – amongst others!

Ålesund in Norway is a popular stop on a Scandinavian cruise

For those who want the ultimate Baltic Sea cruise, we like this 28-day cruise on the Princess Line , which starts in Scotland, sails round the Shetland Islands, Iceland, along the Norwegian coast, and takes in Copenhagen in Denmark, Stockholm and Gotland in Sweden, Tallinn, Riga and Lithuania in the Baltics, plus Gdansk in Poland.

Many Baltic cruises used to include St Petersburg in Russia on their itineraries, but these have been amended or cancelled due to the war in Ukraine.

Arctic Circle cruises are also popular, particularly in summer when you can take full advantage of the midnight sun. We think this 12-day cruise from Scotland that sails along the Norwegian Coast to the North Cape, then over to Svalbard, is a good option.

Must-visit destinations on a Scandinavian cruise

Of course, the Norwegian fjords are a highlight of any Scandinavian cruise (see our guide to the 16 best fjords ).

We reckon the beautiful Geirangerfjord and the dramatic Lofoten Islands are not be missed for their stunning natural beauty, along with the interesting cities of Oslo and Bergen .

The Geirangerfjord in Norway is a popular cruise destination.

Icelandic cruises tend to sail round the whole island taking in the breath-taking scenery and stopping in at lively Reykjavik .

In Denmark, Copenhagen and the pretty island of Bornholm are regular cruise stops, while in Sweden Stockholm and its archipelago are must-see destinations on any cruise itinerary.

In Finland, Helsinki and Turku are both interesting places to stop at, to get a good idea of the country and its culture.

Cruises worth checking out in 2023 and 2024

2023 is the 130th anniversary of the first Hurtigruten ship, so you can get discounts of up fifty percent off the classic Norwegian coastal voyage this year .

Svalbard is a great place for an adventure cruise

We also really like this cruise round Iceland , which includes whale-watching, geysers and the fjords on the remote eastern side of the island.

For those who want to see as much as possible in a short amount, we suggest this 14-day cruise from Southampton that takes in four European capitals, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn, as well as Kiel in Germany.

But, if you think cruising isn’t really for you and want something different, we reckon this six-day Arctic Adventure round the remote island of Svalbard is a great choice.

It takes in the world’s northernmost capital Longyearbyen and explores glaciers, Arctic fjords and mountains, while looking out for walruses, whales and polar bears.

What to pack for a Scandinavian cruise

What you pack depends on the type of cruise you’re going on. If you’ve chosen a large ship with lots of leisure activities and nightlife, you’ll want evening clothes, gym gear and some smart formal wear.

If you’re on an adventure cruise, you may need hiking or climbing gear, waterproofs and walking boots.

But whatever type of cruise you’ve chosen, here’s a basic packing list of essentials.

  • Waterproof and windproof jacket. Whatever time of year you’re travelling, there’s a good chance of rain in Scandinavia, and the wind can be strong!
  • Layers. Even in summer, it can get cold in the evenings so brings lots of layers that you can take on and off.
  • Binoculars. Wildlife spotting is a big part of many Scandinavian cruises, so binoculars are useful.
  • Sunscreen and sun hat.
  • Sturdy shoes. Even if you’re not going hiking, walking round around cities can be hard on the feet, so make sure you have comfortable shoes or boots.
  • Swimming costume. Many ships have pools and even the smaller ones may have a hot tub on deck to dip in.
  • Camera or phone. You won’t want to miss all that stunning scenery!

Experiencing Scandinavian culture on a cruise

Experiencing the culture can be an integral part of any trip, and many cruises put on lectures about local culture and traditions, workshops on local arts and handicrafts, cooking demonstrations of local dishes and shows of local music or bands.

The Silja Line runs between Stockholm and Helsinki.

Often experts in their field give talks on subjects such as star-gazing, geology, wildlife and the culture of the countries you’re visiting.

Some ships, such as the Hurtigruten, pride themselves on serving traditional dishes made from locally sourced seasonal products that are picked up from ports on the way in their restaurants.

Optional shore excursions also often include cultural immersion opportunities, such as this trip to a sheiling , or traditional farm, where you’ll learn all about life on a rural smallholding in the Norwegian mountains.

We also like this visit to a traditional turf farm in Iceland to learn about life in rural Iceland and how to churn butter!

Essential tips for Scandinavian cruises

  • Do your research beforehand. Some of the larger cruise ships are too big to enter the fjords, so choose a smaller boat if you want to go into the fjords, and a larger one if you want lots of facilities and activities.
  • Pick a cabin with a window. Yes, we know they cost more than inside cabins, but we think it’s worth it so you don’t miss any of that beautiful scenery from your room.
  • Don’t expect to see everything. Sometimes the choice of shore trips can be overwhelming, so pick the ones which you really want to do.
  • Make the most of the free activities. Some ships put on loads of activities, so why not use the sea days to learn the ukulele or try your hand at salsa dancing or crochet?
  • Buy travel insurance. Cruises can be expensive so make sure you’re properly insured in case anything goes wrong. We like World Nomads: see below for an instant quote.
  • Most important of all – relax and enjoy the scenery. Make the most of the fact that some of the world’s most dramatic sea- and mountainscapes are sailing past your window!

There are many things to see in Helsinki. So, you’ll see Senate Square, which is the central square of Helsinki with some of the most famous architectural landmarks around the square. Among these are the oldest building in central Helsinki, Sederholm House, and the Helsinki Cathedral .

On Senate Square is also the Government Palace, the University of Helsinki’s central building, and the National Library of Finland. In the center of the square stands a statue of Alexander II.

The Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art is part of the Finnish National Gallery. It houses Finland’s largest collection of contemporary art by leading modern Finnish artists.

Finlandia Hall is an architectural masterpiece designed by famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Made of granite and marble, so it stands out on the beautiful waterfront of Toolo Bay.

The Church of the Rock

The Church of the Rock is one of outstanding churches in Northern Europe. Also known as Temppeliaukio Church. It was designed by architects and brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen and built in 1969.

Most of the church was carved right into the rock. Thanks to the light ceiling, the church is also often used as a concert venue due to its outstanding acoustics.

To sum up, you will see all these places and more on your walking tour. And then, it’s back to the ship in the evening for a leisurely cruise back to Stockholm.

There were 3 guides (we do not know their last names). Miguel was a very good guide, knowledgeable, attentive, no need to be aggressive to control the group. He earns respect. A suggestion for your tours. It would help us a lot if the hotels where they put us up were close to the historic center, to take advantage of the free time they give us. Of all the points visited Suomelina leaves me with doubts. Although it has its historical importance, it consumed too much of our time, which we could have taken advantage of in other important points.

A fantastic trip, our guide Greg and driver Zolton were exceptional. I have done many trips with Insight and as well as many, many with other companies but have to say Greg Colgin went out of his way making my trip one of the best ever. A very attentive Tour Director and attention to details the best. As for Zoltan this is the second trip I have travelled with him as driver, a driver I Trust and feel safe with and a man that goes out of his way to make our experience even better. A lovely clean coach each day with beautifully cleaned windows is always a plus. As for Insight I just love the roomy coaches with extra leg space.

Reviews of finland, norway and sweden tours.

I was worried about the culturally mixed tour clients due to some negative reviews from previous clients. But I enjoyed the experiences of mixing with participants from Mexico and the Philippines. Yes sometimes bilingual guides’ presentations were not clear, and I had to ask for clarifications. Hotels were better than I had expected from the reviews; except in one-hotel the lightening was so bd
Hi... Home too soon and reflecting on how great our trip with Intrepid was. We usually make our own arrangements when we travel. Though older, we do NOT enjoy the big bus experience. However, as we slip into our 70s, it's tougher to arrange all complexities of a trip. Since we are explorers at heart, we thought we'd try a small group trip. So...signed onto Scandinavia Explorer with Intrepid. How wonderful to be so independent yet not have to make all the arrangements. Hrvoje, our guide, was a walking encyclopedia about the sites and both fun and informative. And enjoyed meeting an Aussie lady to share our experiences. A very relaxed sort of trip. We will book another. So 5 stars!!! A little disappointed about the bike ride cancellation, but soon realized that street construction and other circumstances were the cause. One tip, however. On the small cruise part of our trip, we ended up in separate rooms. Not our guide's fault (he was the best), but perhaps with prior forewarning, we could've paid a little supplement to be in the same room even with separate single beds. We've been all around the world yet found ourselves wide-eyed with discoveries on this trip. Small trips like this allow one to meet the locals, too. Can't believe it's over. Although memories aren't. Thank you. What a charming almost fairy tale intro to Norway, Sweden, and Finland! Tom and Sherry Miller from U.S.A.

‘Absolute clown show': Biden sparks mockery after mixing up Norway and Finland while speaking about NATO and foreign policy

R ENO, NEVADA: President Joe Biden slammed former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, March 19, for having "no basis of understanding" of foreign policy, but he subsequently muddled up Norway and Finland when discussing NATO, according to DailyMail .

President Biden told a throng of approximately fifty Democratic Party supporters at a campaign stop in Reno, "This guy – he has no basis of understanding what American foreign policy is about."

Additionally, the Commander-in-Chief said that when Trump spoke about Russian President Vladimir Putin , he sounded as though he had "lost a buddy".

"This guy's talking about like he has lost almost a buddy," the 81-year-old incumbent POTUS remarked.

What prompted Joe Biden to botch his speech midway?

During Tuesday's speech, President Biden committed a glaring slip-up, which would be one of several missteps where he has confused world leaders and countries while speaking in public.

Specifically, while discussing a conversation he had with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger shortly before the latter's passing, Biden recounted that Kissinger had spoken about Sweden and Norway joining NATO.

The President further stated that he was instructed by Kissinger to "increase the NATO border through Sweden and Norway" in order to fortify the alliance.

Notably, while Kissinger did indeed advise strengthening the alliance, Norway was an original member of NATO, and Sweden and Finland had only joined the alliance in the past year, during President Biden 's tenure in the White House.

President Biden visited Reno to inaugurate a new campaign office that will collaborate with the local Democratic Party to attract support from Latino and union voters in the upcoming November election. In order to win Nevada, the President needs the backing of these two groups.

During his address, Biden dedicated a significant portion of his speech to criticizing his political adversary, without ever mentioning the Republican candidate's name, although, it was quite evident who he was referring to.

Biden repeated a comment that Trump told supporters at Mar-a-Lago, even checking his conspicuous note card to ensure he got it correct.

"He was in Mar Lago and he told a crowd of people - I want to look down so I get it exactly right - he said he described the crowd as I know you're rich as hell. But I'm gonna give you those big tax cuts."

The Commander-in-Chief also derided the press because the media houses "report a lot of polls."

He continued, "The last four polls had me up' but didn't say which polls.

"None of the polls mean a damn thing this early on," Biden asserted.

President Joe Biden expressed his confidence in winning another term as the POTUS and conveyed his message to the enthusiastic crowd of supporters, "I'm confident if we get our message out to the American people we're going to win again."

"I feel really good as I go around the country. Not a joke," he further added.

In the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden emerged victorious in the state of Nevada with a narrow margin of 2 percent over his Republican opponent Donald Trump .

In an effort to consolidate his position in the southwestern region of the United States, Biden will be visiting two states on Tuesday.

His first stop will be in Nevada, where he aims to bolster his support and engage with his supporters, followed by a visit to Las Vegas, before he proceeds to Phoenix, Arizona, for his second engagement of the day.

Internet mocks Biden for repeated verbal gaffes

People chastised the Democratic Head of State on social media platforms for his continuos slip-ups while addressing his supporters.

One person remarked: "Biden has no basic understanding of anything that I've seen."

Another person claimed: "At some point Biden is going to run out of steam. He appears to be on life-support on so many levels."

Another person wrote: "Hahaha !!! Joe Biden is without a doubt, the worst POTUS in history. He's absolutely sickening. "

One person commented: "LOL, you could not make this up. Absolute clown show!"

Another person quipped: "The mumbler in chief"

Finally, this person asked: "Hey Joe when are you going to debate Trump?"

U.S. Marines join NATO exercises on freezing Norway tundra, as new battlefield emerges in Arctic

ALTA, Norway — Nestled waist-high in Arctic snow miles away from civilization, U.S. Marines looked through binoculars from their machine-gun position toward the frozen ridge, watching for signs of enemy movement.

Their battalion commander in this exercise, Lt. Col. Thomas Driscoll, approached the trench they dug by hand into the mountainside and asked what they needed.

“More ammo,” one of them replied.

In a nearby tent, fellow soldiers dried snow-saturated cammies over a gas stove. For nearly two weeks, they lived, slept and trained on this stretch of tundra on the northern tip of Norway where temperatures regularly dip below zero.

But when the orders came to change position, they packed the tents and hurriedly filled in the ditches. Within around two hours, they’d taken off on snowmobiles and tracked vehicles, leaving barely a trace behind.

Lt. Col. Thomas Driscoll of the 2nd Marine Regiment, right, visits troops in trenches dug into the Arctic ice in northern Norway.

The fact that troops from the II Marine Expeditionary Force traveled thousands of miles from their base in North Carolina for two weeks of exercises, is a sign of the Arctic’s emergence as a new battlefield in a growing competition between East and West. As climate change exposes once-unreachable parts of the planet, the U.S., Russia and China are all in a race for military and economic dominance.

“The Arctic is absolutely critical,” the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Christopher Mahoney, said in an interview in Norway before the exercises wrapped up this week. “The opening of the Arctic as far as maritime waterways, in lines of communication, make it that much more important.”

The Marines were among some 20,000 troops from 13 nations taking part in NATO’s “Nordic Response” exercise, part of larger war games that are the biggest since the Cold War . The exercise extended to Sweden and Finland , NATO’s two newest members, whose addition in the last year added more than 800 miles to the alliance’s border with Russia.

The scenario: A major adversary is launching a cross-border invasion from the east, and NATO has been activated to repel them. For the Marines, the U.S. military’s rapid response force, the task was to delay the enemy’s advance until reinforcements arrived.

A Swedish soldier takes part in an amphibious assault during a NATO exercise in Badderen, Norway.

It’s a scenario that seems ripped straight from Russia’s war in Ukraine and the resulting fears that Moscow might seek to threaten NATO nations next. U.S. and Norwegian military officials said they have been studying Russia’s successes and failures on the snowy battleground of Ukraine to learn lessons about defending NATO’s northern flank. The officials requested anonymity because they were discussing sensitive intelligence matters.

For the U.S. military, it’s a major shift after decades fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and conducting counterinsurgency against extremist groups in the Middle East . Lt. Col. Driscoll, of the 2nd Marine Regiment, said a large part of his 18 years of service had been spent in Iraq and Yemen.

“The adversary is very different,” he said. “Now we’re in this tactical scenario facing a large-scale, modernized adversary who brings a lot of capability: long-range, indirect fire, large amounts of reconnaissance. And then you’ve got the actual environment: not the heat of the desert, but the harsh cold.”

Corp. Tyler Staehr, 22, brought his expertise operating a HIMARS artillery system — the same kind the U.S. has provided to Ukraine — to an icy stretch of Norway about 150 miles from the Russian border. As the truck-mounted rocket launcher hummed behind him, he recalled learning how to boil snow every morning and night for drinking water.

“Here everything’s a little bit more scarce,” said Staehr, from Lancaster, South Carolina. “So you have to rely on yourself and on your team if you want to survive out in the Arctic climate.”

U.S. Marines train with High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, at a site near Alta, Norway.

As the U.S. and NATO allies hone their cold-weather skills, Moscow is watching. The Norwegian officials said that they had detected Russian vessels in the area spying on the war games and working to pinpoint their radar positions.

While Russian spying on NATO and vice versa is nothing new, Norwegian officials said they’ve detected changes in Russian behavior in recent years, including an increase in electronic warfare like signal-jamming. They also said that Norwegian troops operating near the border have increasingly been approached by Russians in what they suspect is intelligence-gathering.

At the same time, Russia’s heavy attrition in its two-year war in Ukraine has forced its military to divert resources away, said Eirik Kristoffersen, Norway’s chief of defense. He said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military had five times as many troops near its border with Norway before the war. This was proof, he said, that NATO posed no threat to Russia, only the other way around.

“President Putin has demonstrated very well that he knows that NATO is a defensive alliance,” Kristoffersen said.

Still, it’s no coincidence that the Arctic has become the venue for a new global power struggle.

Global warming is quickly melting sea ice, opening up new shipping routes in swaths of Arctic Ocean that are now ice-free during the summer. It has also created new competition for extracting natural resources like oil and natural gas. And undersea data cables in the Arctic are a critical link in global communication systems, relied on by U.S. agencies like NASA.

For the U.S., it’s also a matter of national security. If Russia were to ever launch missiles or bomber jets to strike North America, the shortest path would be over the North Pole.

Swedish combat boats approach the Norwegian coast during an amphibious assault exercise.

A report last year on Arctic power competition from the Washington-based Brookings Institution found that Russia has or is building 30 military or dual-use facilities in the Arctic, including elaborate air bases, ports, nuclear facilities and radio nodes. All told, the country has about three times as many bases as NATO nations inside the Arctic Circle, according to the report’s author, former U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. Jeremy Greenwood.

Beijing has also its sights set on the Arctic. Western nations were taken aback in 2018 when China declared itself a “near-Arctic state” and promised to develop a “Polar Silk Road.” Greenwood’s report found Chinese companies have worked to buy or build airports, rail facilities, and naval and submarine bases from Greenland to Scandinavia.

It’s against this backdrop that a swarm of attack boats cut through the frigid waters and helicopters whipped up the icy air this week, as forces from the U.S., Italy, Finland and other NATO nations practiced an amphibious assault in a Norwegian fjord.

As tactical vehicles rolled off ships onto the shore, troops rappelled from the helicopter by rope while others in snow-colored camouflage stormed the coastline with assault rifles.

Lance Cpl. Cooper Khoury, 21, from Swansea, Massachusetts, said he never imagined being in the snow when he joined the Marines — known for being an amphibious force — a year and a half ago.

“No matter what, we’ll dig in,” he said. “Anywhere we go, I know we can fight. I know we can thrive.”
