Batting Practice

Before every home game at Minute Maid Park, the Astros and visiting team takes batting practice. Bring a glove and catch some free souvenirs as some of baseball’s biggest stars hit homers into the stands starting 2 hours and 25 minutes before game time. This is also the time when players often interact with fans and give autographs before preparing for the game. If you don’t catch a baseball of your own, there are multiple gift shops at the park overflowing with ‘Stros memorabilia.

Once the game is underway, Minute Maid hums with excitement. For restless kids, try visiting the Kids Zone at the northeast corner of the ballpark at the Right Field Entrance near Section 133 for activities, music, and even slushies! Who knows, you might even get to meet Orbit, the Astros’ furry mascot that routinely makes his way around the stadium throughout the game.

Food Inside and Outside the Stadium

Minute Maid Park made national headlines at the beginning of the 2015 with its fried chicken and waffle cone. For the record, it is as good as it looks! The dish is part of a larger park-wide menu that infuses local flavors with a unique twist.  If eating at the stadium isn’t for you, within walking distance of Minute Maid are a handful of excellent dining options offering a great pre-game meetup or post-game celebration. For the more upscale dining experience try the nationally acclaimed  Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse  directly across from the ballpark.  Jackson Street Barbecue  offers mouthwatering BBQ served up Houston-style by acclaimed chef Bill Floyd of  Biggios  and  Grotto . Don’t forget about  Home Plate Bar & Grill  for the favorite neighborhood sports bars. For more options take a short walk to  Discovery Green  or downtown’s other dining locations.

Go ‘Stros!

Cheer on one of the best teams in baseball with thousands of other fans as they chase playoff hopes. Each time a home run is hit by the Astros the Minute Maid train blows its horn, shoots fireworks, and chugs its way across the stadium wall towards Union Station.  Return to Top

This was a great tour! Corellia (our tour guide) knew a lot. The history was fun and it was cool to see the areas we don't normally get to enter.

This tour is incredible! David and Jadyn were absolutely remarkable and were extremely knowledgeable about the entire park and made sure our students were actively engaged throughout the entire hour and a half tour. We had such a great experience, and I highly recommend this event for any group or individual to visit.

We decided to have our son's first birthday party at Minute Maid Park and I must say everyone had the time of their lives! Let me start off by saying everything was perfect! Caleb(events coordinator) the wonderful tour guides and the staff at Minute Maid Park were extremely kind and courteous! They went over and beyond to accommodate my friends and family at the party. I absolutely love how the suite where we ate pizza and sang happy birthday overlooked the whole baseball field. My guest were amazed and the children were so excited to eat on the balcony outside. Like I said everything was perfect, from the cupcakes to the amazing Astros party favors the guest got to pick from. After the suite we got to go to the batting cages, this is where any guest who wanted to practice batting got to step up to the plate. It was amazing to think that players from different teams in the Major League practice batting in the same cage we were currently in. After the batting cages we then got a grand tour of the Minute Maid park, from the press box to the best seats on the field. We seen everything! Everyone and I mean everyone loved it all! This will always be a birthday everyone will talk about for years and years to come! Thanks to all the staff at the Houston Astros minute maid park, you guys Rock!!!!!!

This place is a real Tours-De-Force, and the tours here take more than a minute. They're just maid that way. Just be careful where you park. Astro-logically speaking this is one of the best teams out there. Considering Houston is the 4th city of America, a huge market and one which likes sports as much as the next town (to some degree), it doesn't have a marquee team that everyone here loves. The Astros have, more than any other, emerged as that team. They're very beloved by the Latin community because of people like Altuve, and because of bringing championships to Houston, a city that needs and deserves them more than most. So yes, the Astros are a very good baseball team which represent the city of Houston better than any of the other teams, although the Rockets are a close second, in terms of putting things on the shelves of the trophy cabinet, and in representing the Latin community, which makes up more than half of Houston's population, and this is probably why you see more of these shirts around than any other team. The Rockets are kinda good and kind of popular, and manage to bring the odd big name to town which is great, and the Texans are just a major disappointment despite having the marquee stand up guy (JJ Watt) on the team for so long. Now we're going to see if they can step out of his enormous shadow. But regardless, the Texans aren't fanatically followed, and honestly that's what happens if you put a major NFL franchise, which is a sport mainly followed by some demographics, in a town that is not famous for those demographics. Houston should continue investing in the Dynamo, the Rockets, and especially the Astros since they're already by far the most beloved team in town.

We went on the Minute Maid Park tour on Father's Day 2020... during Covid. Baseball was cancelled for the season so this was the closest thing we had. We loved the tour... well, loved it as much as Covid restrictions allowed. Temperature checks, masks and a strict NO TOUCHING ANYTHING POLICY was in full effect. One of our kids literally touched a table and the tour guide yelled at her and had to immediately disinfect the spot. (Eye roll). Anyways, we liked the tour and how much we got to see. It wasn't too short, wasn't too long... just right. Can't recall how much tour tickets were... $15 sounds right. Highly recommend if you are a 'Stros fan and haven't been on it yet.

This review is for the daily tour offered by Minute Maid Park. The ballpark offers several types of tours. The daily tour, the pregame tour and custom tours. The tour starts at the Astros team store in the Union Station lobby. During 1.5 hour tour you will see the press box, the owners suite, the diamond club and actually spend time walking the warning track for great photos of the field. The tour guide shared a wealth of anecdotes, historic facts and general thoughts about the park, the Astros and baseball. I highly recommend this tour before seeing an Astros game.

houston astros tour of stadium

Recently we went on a field trip to Minute Maid park for the educational tour. I have to admit when I first found out this was where a bunch of first graders were going on the field trip I was apprehensive because I thought the kids would be bored. I was wrong, they loved it! I loved it too! Our tour guides were great and kept it exciting. It was paced perfectly and my students had so many great questions that the guides knew all the answers to. The only reason why it's not getting 4-5 stars is because once the tour was over the kids were able to sit and eat their lunch outside on the property, I wish they had a playground and definitely restrooms. We were not allowed back inside to use the restroom and luckily after some convincing they allowed us to send 6 kids at a time to use the restroom. For anyone who has small children or is in education I'm sure you all know that this created a bit of a stressful situation. Luckily no accidents occurred. If we ever do this field trip again, we are getting right on the bus after the tour and going to discovery green where restrooms are available and it's more "kid friendly" to play.

Tour guide was terribly unknowledgeable about the team, the stadium and any player history. All she knew about was prices of seats and food. Very poor speaker as well. Extremely disappointing.

Dear Kyle, I am really sorry to hear about your experience here at Minute Maid Park. The tour you described is uncharacteristic of our tour guides as they are all well-trained and undergo rigorous testing, which includes team history, stadium history and specifications, as well as speaking ability, before being certified to give stadium tours. Please feel free to call me so we may discuss the issue in better detail. I would like to know which tour you took and the date and time of your tour, so we may better address the situation. Thank you for visiting Minute Maid Park, and again, I am sorry to hear about your experience. I sincerely hope you will consider visiting us, again, in the future. Our particular guide did not provide much information about the different areas we were shown. Our students had some good questions, yet he was unable to answer several that a tour guide should have known. A bit more enthusiasm and much more information would have made for a better experience.

Minute Maid Park

By Edward de la Fuente

Our guide to Minute Maid Park in Houston includes information on events, tickets, parking, public transportation, nearby hotels and restaurants, seating, bag policy and more. Read on to find out how to get the most out of your gameday experience.

In Major League Baseball there are traditional ballparks and quirky ones; old-timey ones and modern ones; ones that embrace the great outdoors and ones with retractable roofs.

Houston’s Minute Maid Park, home of the Astros, seems to fit the second of each of those pairs — it certainly fits the last one, since it undoubtedly has a retractable roof. But none of this is to say that any of those things are bad.

Baseball fans and ballpark enthusiasts tend to romanticize the old-timey and traditional, but Minute Maid Park fits Houston and its team just fine. Remember, the Astros are a team that used to play in the majors’ (and the world’s)  first domed stadium  and helped usher in the era of  artificial turf .

Nowadays, the Astros play in a park that is quite unique and quite quirky — perhaps, in retrospect, the designers tried a little too hard to make it so — but for the fan offers plenty in the way of an enjoyable day at the ballpark. So it’s an A-OK place to see baseball as far as we’re concerned.

These days the Astros are one of baseball’s more entertaining clubs to watch, with four trips to the World Series and two championships since 2017 (though not without plenty of controversy involved). Between the action on the field and the venue, taking in an Astros game promises to be a fine experience all around.

Getting to the ballpark

Minute Maid Park sits on the edge of downtown, with a freeway (U.S. 59, or the Eastex Freeway) running right by it, and occupies a prominent piece of land in an up-and-coming part of town — there are several apartment and loft complexes within walking distance, built around the same time the ballpark was or afterward.

Despite Minute Maid Park’s downtown location, driving and parking is the best way to get there. There is an alternative, though, in the form of Houston’s METRORail light rail system. Expanded in recent years, it now has a station that serves Minute Maid Park.

If you’re using the Red Line that cuts through downtown, transfer at Central Station to either the green or purple lines and take it one stop to Convention District, and from the station you can walk one block to the ballpark. Or you can just walk from Central Station, a stroll of about six blocks and 15 minutes or so.

If you’re visiting Houston, there are a number of brand-name hotels within easy walking distance of Minute Maid Park as well as the numerous other attractions in the area.

Parking at Minute Maid Park

There’s quite a bit of parking around Minute Maid Park, which is no surprise in car-centric Texas. Also of no surprise is that there are several rather large parking lots in the surrounding area, all along Texas Street south of Minute Maid Park.

The most prime spaces are reserved for season-ticket holders and prepaid permits. Follow the link for Minute Maid Park parking information , including a map and a portal to purchase parking passees.

If you’d like to find a cheaper parking option that isn’t too far from Minute Maid Park, you can try the blocks northwest or northeast of the stadium. The deeper into Houston’s downtown core you get, the more parking structures you’ll find, many offering ballgame rates under $10.

Things to do around the ballpark

The range of things to do near Minute Maid Park has increased over the last decade or so thanks to an influx of development near the ballpark as well as attractions such as Shell Energy Stadium, home of the Houston Dynamo of MLS, and a little farther away, the George R. Brown Convention Center and Toyota Center , where the NBA’s Rockets play.

The intersection of Texas and Crawford streets, adjacent to Minute Maid Park, is itself teeming with things to do, from the Westin hotel to a number of restaurants. This is a good starting point to finding a place for pregame merriment, and a walk of three or four blocks in any direction should yield a lot more options.

As the ballpark is on the edge of downtown, you’ll find that the restaurant and bar options become more sophisticated the deeper you get into the downtown core. More typical sports-fan fare exists next to the ballpark, though. If you’re walking from a downtown hotel to Minute Maid Park, you’re bound to find an eatery or bar to your liking.

But for a little bit more of a hometown feel, try crossing under the highway toward Shell Energy Stadium. This neighborhood, known locally as EaDo (East of Downtown), has a bit more artsy feel to it, and it’s reflected in the establishments that you can find here.

Watching a game at Minute Maid Park

If you’re making your first visit to Minute Maid Park, do yourself a favor and go inside through the left-field gate at the corner of Crawford and Texas regardless of where your seating area is.

At first it’ll appear as though you’re entering an office building, but once you’ve gone through the ticket scanners, you’ll get your first glimpse of the left-field patio that was fashioned to resemble a train depot — a tribute to the former Union Station  that stood at the site (the building is now part of the ballpark).

The arches, the other side of which are visible from inside whenever you look toward left field, are perhaps the most distinctive thing about the ballpark, so it’s a nice intro to the experience to be able to walk under them.

As you do so, you’ll get your first glimpse of Minute Maid Park’s diamond as you stand before what’s known as the Crawford Boxes — the short-porch seating area in left field. Just above you will be the orange-filled train that rolls along its tracks whenever an Astros player hits a home run.

And off to the left are a couple good platforms for standing-room viewing, including one that juts out slightly over the playing field (look for the large white gas pump that keeps track of Astros home runs).

The ballpark used to be known for the hill in center field that was in the field of play — and had a flagpole jutting out of it, also in play. Those features were removed in 2016, which allowed for more standing-room space on the concourse, above the center-field batter’s eye.

Minute Maid Park’s seating bowl is pretty big, and feels big, especially if your ticket is for the upper deck. At least if you’re up top you can get a good glimpse of the giant roof that covers the ballpark for most games, or if you’re lucky and the weather is nice on the day that you attend, you can feel the breeze from the open roof.

Be sure to stay in your seating area for the seventh-inning stretch, as the Astros and Minute Maid Park always follow “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” with the playing of a Texas tradition, “ Deep in the Heart of Texas ” — a song you’ll hear at more than one Houston venue.

Food and drink at Minute Maid Park

Take some time to survey your food options while you’re walking the concourses. There are a few good ones as ballpark food goes, including plenty of stands serving brisket and pulled pork. Tex-Mex options like quesadillas and nachos are easy to find as well. Look out for the Frito Pie corn dog, served at the Texas Legends stand (where you can also find burgers from Astros legend Nolan Ryan’s beef company ).

National burger chain Shake Shack, pizza chain Papa John’s and Houston taco favorite Torchy’s Tacos all operate stands at Minute Maid Park.

The craft beer scene is strong here as well, with local breweries Karbach and Saint Arnold represented. Karbach, in fact, operates its own taproom on the 300 level, where it serves a ballpark-specific beer called Crawford Bock .

Minute Maid Park bag and food policy

Per policy , approved bags for entry into Minute Maid Park must measure 16 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches or smaller, and must be single-compartment. They need not be clear, like those permitted in NFL stadiums.

Large bags such as backpacks (other than single-compartment bags with drawstrings that fit the size requirement above), suitcases and purses are forbidden at Minute Maid Park, per stadium policy.

Outside food is permitted at Minute Maid Park, as long as items are inside a plastic bag no larger than one gallon in size. Fans can also bring in one factory-sealed water bottle, one liter or smaller.

Bags will be inspected by security at the entry gates to Minute Maid Park, and patrons carrying any bags that don’t comply with stadium policy will be denied entry.

Minute Maid Park, home to Major League Baseball's Houston Astros, is a popular place to be during the summer months in Houston. In addition to housing more than 40,000 seats, the park also features a replica of a 19th-century locomotive that runs about 800 feet along the west side of the ballpark and lights up and makes sounds when the team first takes to the natural grass field, when an Astros player scores a home run and when the team wins. The air-conditioned stadium is a wonderful relief from hot summer days. Yet the stadium also has a fully retractable roof, which allows for fresh air on cooler days. Even when the roof is closed, a 50,000-square-foot glass section keeps the city's skyline visible.

Some visitors suggest trying to catch a game on a Friday fireworks night, as the show is impressive. Those on the lookout for unique ballpark eats won't be disappointed either. The park offers a huge food selection ranging from ballpark classics (like hot dogs and nachos) to healthy salad bars, though several recent visitors commented on the hefty price for a beer.

Minute Maid Park is located in the northeast end of downtown Houston, a few blocks from Discovery Green and the Marriott Marquis Houston . There are an estimated 25,000 parking spaces (paid) in lots and garages within walking distance of the park. The ballpark is walkable from downtown and the METRORail Green and Purple lines service the Convention District stop. For visitors not in town for a game, Minute Maid Park offers guided tours, from the one-hour classic tour to the two-hour Ultimate Fan tour; tour ticket prices vary. Check out the tour availabilities here . Game tickets also vary in price. For more information visit the official website .

Entertainment, taylor swift deal overshadows diplomacy at asia summit as singapore defends exclusive eras tour stop.

Rod Mcguirk

Associated Press

MELBOURNE – Taylor Swift stole the show at an Asian summit Tuesday when Singapore’s leader defended his tiny country's lucrative concert deal that could cause bad blood with neighboring nations.

Singapore is a key member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations , a 10-nation bloc known as ASEAN. Its three-day summit was expected to focus on member Myanmar’s humanitarian crisis and conflicts in the South China Sea.

Recommended Videos

Instead, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was grilled on the summit's sidelines about an exclusive deal his city-state struck with Swift that prevents the singer from taking her Eras Tour to any other stop in Southeast Asia.

Swift is performing six concerts from March 2 to 9 in Singapore, and some Southeast Asian neighbors complain that the Singapore deal deprives them of the tourism boom her concerts bring to hosts. Her Eras Tour shattered records when it reportedly surpassed $1 billion last year , and her film adaptation of the tour quickly took No. 1 at the box office and became the highest-grossing concert film to date.

The Singaporean leader confirmed Tuesday that Swift was provided with “certain incentives” in exchange for making Singapore her only Southeast Asian destination on her Eras Tour. Lee defended the deal at a joint news conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, a self-professed Swiftie whose Spotify Wrapped list boasted Taylor Swift as his second most streamed artist of 2023. Albanese is hosting the summit in Melbourne, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Australia becoming ASEAN’s first external partner.

Lee did not reveal the cost of the exclusive deal, which was paid for from a government fund established to rebuild tourism after COVID-19 disruptions. He also did not directly answer when asked if he had encountered “bad blood” among other leaders due to the deal, instead suggesting that if Singapore hadn’t struck an exclusive deal, a neighboring country might have done so.

“It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don’t see that as being unfriendly,“ Lee said.

Thailand’s Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, brought attention to the deal in February with a public claim that a promoter told him the Singaporean government subsidized the concert with a condition that the artist not play anywhere else in Southeast Asia.

Srettha said that if he had known about the deal before, he was confident he would be able to pull off something similar.

But Thailand doesn’t hold it against Singapore, said Prommin Lertsuridej, the Secretary-General of the Prime Minister. He told reporters in a group interview Monday that Thailand took what Singapore did as an example, and while Thailand already has some laws in place to allow such incentive packages, the government is working to remove red tape and make Thailand a more attractive venue for international events.

“We learn from each other,” Prommin said, adding that he admired Singapore for being able to come up with and achieve this “good business idea.”

Lee said that, while he didn't know what Australia's arrangements were, he expected it similarly made “mutually acceptable, sensible arrangements” with Swift when she performed in Melbourne and Sydney — one of which Australia's prime minister attended — before flying to Singapore.

Swift’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Other questions at the news conference covered increasing tensions in the South China Sea , the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the likelihood of China joining in a regional free trade pact.

Hip Hop Mogul Buys Naming Rights to Astros' Spring Training Stadium

When a team is as consistently good as the Houston Astros have been for the past seven years, a lot of eyes are placed upon them.

This brings more opportunity from a business sense than if they were routinely at the bottom of the league.

For a while, the Astros were at the bottom of the league, undergoing an extensive rebuild that stripped just about everything down to restart fresh.

They've come out on the other side maybe even better than they imagined, having built a modern dynasty that's seen them hoist two World Series trophies, four AL pennants, and make an American League record seven consecutive ALCS appearances.

Houston's front office has done a good job of navigating this offseason to give themselves another shot at winning their third championship.

As the team begins to report for Spring Training, the stadium they'll be playing at in West Palm Beach, Florida will now have a new name.

According to Matt Young of The Houston Chronicle , it will now be called Cacti Park of the Palm Beaches after both the Astros and Washington Nationals , who they share the stadium with, reached a deal with Hip Hop mogul Travis Scott and his Cacti Hard Seltzer brand.

Scott is a Houston area native, having grown up in Missouri City, and is major fan of the Astros and other professional Houston sports teams. He's a 10-time Grammy nominee but has never taken home the award.

The naming rights will go into effect immediately, changing from Ballpark of the Palm Beaches to its new name.

The Astros and Nationals play on Feb. 24 as the first game in the newly named stadium.

Young reports that Scott will throw out the first pitch and be present for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
