The Wiggles announce 18+ arena tour with original line-up

It’ll mark the group’s first full-scale tour for adults only, and their first reunion gigs in arenas

The Wiggles. Credit: Mark Metcalfe/Getty Images

The Wiggles ‘ original line-up have announced a seven-date run of arena shows for 2022, marking their first full-scale tour for 18+ audiences.

The tour is set to kick off in Darwin on Saturday February 12, before the quartet – alongside a full cast of classic characters such as Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur and Wags the Dog – hit stages in Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Tickets will be available from The Wiggles’ website from 4pm local time this Friday (October 22).

It’ll be the third time the group have performed together since their initial disbanding in 2012, with Murray Cook (the original Red Wiggle), Jeff Fatt (Purple) and Greg Page (Yellow) having previously joined Anthony Field – who has maintained his role as the Blue Wiggle since 1991 – for standalone charity shows in 2016 and 2020.

“All of those children who loved The Wiggles in the ‘90s are now adults who love the nostalgia and fun from that time in their lives,” Fatt said in a press release. “This night is for the grown-ups and is a chance to bring back some of that genuine, high-spirited liveliness again. We can’t wait to relive those childhood memories and dance the night away to some of the favourite old-school tunes.”

Cook added: “It will be The Wiggles as you remember and love them, but we’ll all have a bit more grey hair… And there’s a bar. We’ll be playing all your favourite songs, and put on a show you won’t forget.”

Each show will feature a different support act, with more details for those due to be announced in the coming months. Polish Club and DZ Deathrays are amongst the acts set to join the festivities.

Cook and Fatt retired from the group in 2012, while Page stepped away in 2006, though he returned briefly from 2012 to 2013. Their first reunion with Field – a pub show in Sydney – took place in 2016, with the band raising money for Soldier On Australia.

They reunited again for a pair of shows last January , this time endeavouring to raise funds for the Australian Red Cross and WIRES, following the bushfires that devastated Australia throughout the summer of 2019 and 2020. They pulled in over $150,000 between the two shows , however Page was not present at the second one as he’d suffered a cardiac arrest onstage during the first .

Joking about the incident in today’s (October 19) announcement, Page said he “may have to pull back a bit on the dancing this time around”.

Also announced today was the departure of Emma Watkins, who’d performed as the Yellow Wiggle since 2010. Her role will be filled by the 15-year-old Tsehay Hawkins, who’d previously joined the group back in August for the webseries Fruit Salad TV .

In a video statement posted to The Wiggles’ Instagram, Watkins said: “Like many people around the world, the pandemic has given me time to reflect on what is important in life. For me, that means spending more time at home, something that I didn’t realise I was missing out on being away eight months of the year on tour.

“I’m really looking forward to devoting more time and energy to focus on completing my PhD which incorporates my ongoing passion for sign language, dance and film editing, and to having more time to work with the deaf community.”

2021 has been a massive year for The Wiggles, despite the challenges that the pandemic has continued to pose. The band celebrated their 30th anniversary; a remarkable milestone that has seen them entertain millions of families and generations of fans around the world.

They completed a massive tour of Australia and New Zealand, and released several albums including a career-spanning Greatest Hits collection,  We’re All Fruit Salad! , and the ARIA-nominated  Lullabies with Love . Most recently, The Wiggles were named as the second-most streamed local artist on Spotify in Australia this year, across all genres.

In an exciting development, the long-standing Wiggles lineup of  Anthony Field ,  Simon Pryce  and  Lachy Gillespie  was expanded to include new members  Tsehay Hawkins ,  Evie Ferris ,  John Pearce  and  Kelly Hamilton.  It was also announced that  Emma Watkins  will depart The Wiggles at the end of the year.

Now, the current Wiggles lineup has joined forces with the ‘OG Wiggles’ ( Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt  and  Greg Page ), and teamed up with some very special musical friends, for an ambitious and expansive recording project,  ReWiggled .

wiggles on tour 2022

ReWiggled  is a double album, comprised of two distinct halves, which celebrate both the enduring nature of The Wiggles’ songbook, and also The Wiggles’ own lifetime love of music.

Side One of the album   sees some of Australia’s top musicians paying tribute to The Wiggles, honouring the profound and unique influence the band has had over generations of young music fans. Featuring classic Wiggles songs reimagined by artists including  Spacey Jane ,  DZ Deathrays ,  The Chats ,  Stella Donnelly ,  San Cisco ,  Emily Wurramara ,  Polish Club ,  Dami Im ,  Donny Benet ,  Emma Donovan and The Putbacks ,  Custard ,  Melbourne Ska Orchestra ,  Luca Brasi , and more.

Following on from The Wiggles’ groundbreaking appearance on triple j’s Like A Version (covering  Tame Impala ’s ‘Elephant’) – and in response to overwhelming audience demand, so popular was their offering – the band have decided to record a full length collection of covers, filled with equally unforgettable and impressive renditions of some of their favourite songs.

Side Two of  ReWiggled  features “wigglified” versions of hits originally performed by  AC/DC ,  Queen, Rihanna ,  James Brown ,  The Chats,   Fatboy Slim,  and many more.

The  ReWiggled  double album will be released on March 11, 2022. However, today sees the release of the first taste of the collection, the 5 track  ReWiggled EP .

This sneak peek sampler sees beloved Perth indie rock maestros  Spacey Jane  deliver a sparkling, joyous version of  ‘D.O.R.O.T.H.Y. (My Favourite Dinosaur) ’, in what is a major highlight of the album.

Queensland shed rock heroes  The Chats  put their own unmistakable garage punk stamp all over  ‘Can You (Point Your Fingers and Do the Twist?)’ .

And The Wiggles have returned the favour directly, with their exhilarating yet Wiggly take on The Chats’ modern Aussie Rock classic  ‘Pub Feed’ .

But perhaps the wildest moment on the EP sees The Wiggles tackle one of the most iconic songs of all time – Queen’s  ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’  – in a performance that proves to be an absolute musical tour de force.

On their involvement with  ReWiggled , Spacey Jane commented:

“There were plenty of reasons ‘D.O.R.O.T.H.Y. (My Favourite Dinosaur)’ was the track we chose! First and foremost, we’ve accidentally stumbled upon Peppa’s insanely good Dorothy impressions, and the ad-libs really gave her space to shine. It was easy to re-interpret the song and comfortably make it sound like something we’d release, and we had an absolute blast putting it together in the studio. Honestly, wouldn’t be surprised if we play it live at least once or twice…”

Wiggles founder and Blue Wiggle Anthony Field, remarked:

“It’s been really enjoyable, and also so humbling, hearing all these wonderful artists doing their versions of Wiggles songs – they’re all so very talented. And it’s been a real thrill to get back in the studio together with all the Wiggles – the current members and the OG’s – to record some cover versions of our own. We had so much fun doing ‘Elephant’ for Like A Version, and now we’re really excited for people to hear what we’ve cooked up for this record!”

Concerts and kids

Meet your heroes! Or at least scream-sing along to their music while 60 feet away from them, amid hundreds or sometimes thousands of other people doing the same thing!

Marc Thiessen is a huge concertgoer , and if you like music even a fraction as much as he does, he wants you to be one, too.

In an essay very much outside his customary political wheelhouse, Marc traces his live-music experience from his first show as a teen (Madonna — I see you, Marc!) to his present-day quest to track down his all-time favorites performing in concert before “they die — or I do.” North of 100 shows he’s attended (or has plans to attend) are mentioned in the piece; it’s more if you count a Wiggles concert he went to with his kids.

One of Marc’s old buddies puts it nicely: “Live music allows us a real, incarnational connection to the music we love. Like time spent ‘in person’ with a friend versus a phone call. It’s spontaneous and a little unpredictable; something we all crave in our overscheduled, often virtual lives.”

Parenting writer Jan Sokoloff Harness in her essay today reflects , meanwhile, on hyper-scheduled, predictable and perhaps overbearing connection: Her adult children are well past Wiggles age, but, until recently, she still texted them to say good night before every bedtime.

“That might sound sweet,” she writes. “It wasn’t.”

Over time, Harness realized that “it’s not a kid’s job to calm their parent’s anxiety.” She ceased the nighttime texts — after some prodding from her daughters — and it turns out that by not scheduling fretting about her kids each evening, she managed to calm her nerves herself.

Now, given a little more autonomy, Harness’s daughters call more frequently for more meaningful phone conversations: real, unscheduled, “incarnational.” Or, music to her ears.

Chaser: While Marc is busy meeting his heroes, Rick Reilly imagines an abysmal dinner where you can hobnob at Augusta National with all the Masters’ biggest losers.

From the op-ed by event management firm founder Lynda Webster and William Webster , a former CIA and FBI director — and scam victim.

Since a Jamaican crime ring tried to defraud the Websters out of $50,000 in 2014, they write, scam artistry has grown only more sophisticated and widespread in the United States. (This, I should note, makes me feel much better about the $700 I lost in 2019 to a convoluted scheme involving a counterfeit cashier’s check.)

The Websters, appropriately, take a very CIA/FBI tack to the problem, which they write is largely “the work of foreign organized-crime syndicates that have hijacked our technology and are using it against us. … We must move rapidly to increase our defenses against this growing national security threat.”

Hear, hear. And, thankfully, I’ve just gotten an email from a Nigerian prince willing to invest millions in this project as long as he can first verify my identity with my Social Security number. I’ll keep you all posted.

More politics

For a few cycles now, Democrats have been accused of “meddling” in Republican primaries by running ads touting the Trumpy bona fides of the most MAGA candidates — thinking they would be weaker opponents in the general election.

Meddling, maybe. But E.J. Dionne doesn’t see a problem : “A little hardball in pursuit of the power needed to defeat Trumpism is not hypocrisy. It’s a necessity.”

As E.J. writes, the hypocrisy argument might hold a little more water if moderates could ever be counted on to stand up against Donald Trump . That just isn’t so, he writes, making the case that the only way to break the far right’s grip on the GOP is for extreme Republicans to keep losing races to Democrats.

Chaser: Republicans want you to believe you were better off four years ago. Jen Rubin writes that just about the only person who was … was Trump himself.

Smartest, fastest

  • Abolishing liberty did not bring Russia security, the Editorial Board writes following last week’s terrorist attack in Moscow. And Max Boot writes that Vladimir Putin’s fixation on imaginary foes keeps the Russian leader from seeing the real ones right in front of him.
  • The United States will have to intervene in Haiti, former U.S. ambassador James Foley writes .
  • Electric cars are the future, Megan McArdle writes . So why is the EPA pumping the brakes?

It’s a goodbye. It’s a haiku. It’s … The Bye-Ku.
