Sharjah launches new brand logo and tourism campaign

Press Room

Sharjah government on Sunday launched its new brand and a campaign, ‘Your Sharjah’, that gives a peek into the northern emirate’s successful growth over the past 52 years.

The new brand logo, showcasing windows in the design, depicts ample room for residents and visitors to explore and discover the tourist destinations and the fantastic things happening around the emirate.

“Sharjah has grown rapidly in the last 52 years since Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, led the emirate. And it was time to find a way to encompass all that with a new and modern brand. This identity is something that people can relate to. It is there with the tag line with the essence of our emirate which is ‘Your Sharjah’”, said Sheikh Fahim Bin Sultan Bin Khalid Al Qasimi, executive chairman of the Department of Government Relations in Sharjah.

A multi-departmental team from Sharjah government entities took part in the campaign to reach the new brand.

“There was a lot of hard work from a dedicated team to find a new logo and identity that showcases all the fantastic things happening in Sharjah as a tourism destination, as a thriving economy for investment for trade regionally and globally, and rich culture and heritage that we can discover in Sharjah,” Sheikh Fahim said, adding that “It is not easy to a develop a brand when Sharjah has so much history.”

Replying to a question whether the emirate’s popular tagline, ‘Smile, you’re in Sharjah’, still exists, he responded with a smile: “With the number of smiles that we have in Sharjah, it is very difficult not to say ‘Smile you’re in Sharjah’. If I add, it would be ‘Smile, you’re in your Sharjah’ because the emirate has something for everybody – whether you are here to discover fantastic beaches, heritage, archaeological sites and educational institutes,” he added.

Addressing the gathering, Shaikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Executive Committee for the SICC 2014 Celebrations, said the selection of Sharjah as the Islamic Culture Capital comes in culmination of its numerous cultural and intellectual achievements, which align with the vision of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

“Thanks to its abundant intellectual treasures, the emirate has managed to establish its cultural and Islamic identity so as to remain a source of pride for us, as well as for Arabs and Muslims,” he said.

He pointed to the emirate’s unique set of Islamic edifices and museums and said it is poised to include new heritage, tourism, cultural and architectural projects early next year.

According to Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Isesco), Sharjah’s selection is based on its long history of disseminating science, culture and knowledge, and its edifices that sum up an entire history in their architecture.

The organisation pointed to the mosques, cultural institutions, museums and heritage markets as well as the artistic, literary and theatrical arenas in the emirate. It also pointed to the cultural and intellectual events that the emirate holds throughout the year.

SHARJAH // A Dh140 million man-made island will be the centrepiece of Sharjah’s celebrations as it takes the title of Islamic Culture Capital of the Arab region 2014.

The Al Majaz Island project, to be built in Khalid Lagoon in the heart of Sharjah City, was named as the official venue for next year’s events and forms part of a wider Dh273m development plan for the area including bridges linking it to the mainland and an open-air, 7,238-square-metre amphitheatre that seats 4,500 spectators.

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, chairman of the Executive Committee for Sharjah’s Islamic Culture Capital organisation, said the emirate’s selection is the culmination of its numerous cultural and intellectual achievements and is in line with the vision of Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah.

“Sharjah, with its people, scientific edifices, cultural platforms and historical character, has given joy a different meaning embodied in the knowledge it disseminates to continue to serve as a beacon of science among nations,” he said.

“Thanks to its abundant intellectual treasures, the emirate has managed to establish its cultural and Islamic identity so as to remain a source of pride for us, as well as for Arabs and Muslims.”

Sheikh Sultan was speaking at the launch of the official logo for Sharjah’s tenure as culture capital.

Each year three Islamic cities are selected from the Arab world, Africa and Asia to represent their region as the Islamic Culture Capital. Al Madina in Saudi Arabia is the current Arab capital.

According to the Islamic Organization for Education, Science and Culture (Isesco), the selection of Sharjah as the capital of the Arab region for next year is based on the emirate’s long history of science, culture and knowledge, as well as its one-of-a-kind buildings and architecture that show its history.

Dr Obaid Saif Al Hajri, director of the regional office of Isesco in Sharjah, said the Islamic Culture Capital programme aims to show the cultural richness of the Arab and Muslim world, as well as its material and moral diversity, while highlighting the history and civilization of Muslim cities in addition to the contributions made by their intellectual and scientific institutions.

“It is crucial to point out that this city boasts a prestigious position and a cultural role essential to spreading Islamic and human culture.

“The programme is regarded as one of the mechanisms to deepen Islamic cultural unity and appropriate the means to establish the immutable foundations of the cooperation among the member states to renovate the civilised construction of the world,” said Dr Al Hajri.

The Dh120 million amphitheatre on Al Majaz Island will host international cultural and art events and will include conference rooms and galleries, as well as a number of shops, restaurants and green areas. It will be connected to Khalid Lagoon Street by a Dh13 million footbridge.

SCTDA organizes workshops to enhance tourism in Sharjah in cooperation with government, hospitality, travel sectors

Al Bawaba

Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority organized three workshops to discuss the optimal use of the Sharjah Capital of Arab Tourism Award 2015 logo to enhance tourism in the emirate in cooperation with its partners.

The workshops, held over three days at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the government, hospitality and travel sectors, were attended by more than 200 participants.

Addressing the workshops, His Excellency Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Director General, SCTDA, called upon the participants to play a proactive role in encouraging tourism growth in Sharjah.

We can work together as a team to create the right environment for tourism to flourish in Sharjah. Together we can attract more visitors by using all the available tools and capabilities. In this aspect, the logo of Sharjah Capital of Arab Tourism Award 2015 is one of the most important tools that embodies in its design the cultural heritage of Sharjah. It symbolizes the emirate’s new status as the Capital of Arab Tourism and as well as a modern city with a rich heritage,” H.E. Al Midfa said.

During the workshop, the creative agency which designed the logo provided the participants detailed information about the concept behind the design. The participants were able to gain insights on the significance of each colour on the logo and how each element of the logo can be used among stakeholders to effectively raise awareness about the Award.

The purple colour on the Sharjah Capital of Arab Tourism Award 2015 logo shows that Sharjah is the cultural heart of the United Arab Emirates. The gold colour represents the authentic characteristics and rich business foundation of the emirate, while the pale blue colour stands for Leisure. The orange colour on the logo represents the vibrancy of the emirate. All the colours of the new logo are consistent with the colours of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority.

The logo also features architectural elements which are a tribute to the iconic buildings in Sharjah. The Al Midfa Wind Tower represents the only wind tower existing in the UAE. The Central Souk, also known as the Blue Souk due to the colour of its roof, is another focal point in the emirate

SCTDA launches Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021

Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) unveiled today Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021, aiming to attract more than 10 million tourists by year 2021, when the UAE celebrates its 50th anniversary. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Radisson Blu Resort Sharjah, attended by H.E. Mohammed Ali Al Noman, Chairman of SCTDA, and H.E. Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Director General of SCTDA, in the presence of a number of dignitaries and representatives of key players in tourism, travel and hospitality sectors as well as the media.

SCTDA stated on the occasion that as part of its role towards developing the tourism sector in Sharjah and to promote its attractions, it studied the factors that affect tourism at the local, regional and international levels, and analysed the development of tourism in the emirate based on scientific data. This effort has been translated into an ambitious strategy, through a plan of action based on key pillars for a promising future for the tourism sector, the Authority said.

Addressing the press conference, H.E. Mohammed Ali Al Noman said: There is no doubt that Sharjah has established a leading position for itself on the global tourism map as one of the favourite destinations for millions of visitors from all over the world. We have been able to tap into our historical and cultural tourism potential and leverage our advanced infrastructure and innovative hospitality services to attract tourists from different parts of the world. However, we believe that developing tourism capacity and launching strategic projects are essential to ensure sustained growth and excellence. We are therefore focused on maintaining the uniqueness of our tourism sector and expand the market share of tourism in the economy.

H.E. Al Noman clarified that the main goal of the vision is to build a platform to unite all the efforts, initiatives and tourism programmes under one umbrella, to provide industry players and stakeholders with the ability to reach the stated goal, and enable the tourism industry to play a prominent role as one of the most important economic sectors in Sharjah.

Stating that the development of tourism sector is vital for the overall development of Sharjahs economy, H.E. Al Noman said: This is a goal that cannot be achieved by any particular sector on its own. To achieve this, we need the active partnership of all public and private sector companies and institutions in the aviation, tourism, and hospitality sectors. Everyone must support this vision in a collaborative framework to achieve the Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021.

During the press conference, H.E. Khalid Al Midfa gave a presentation on the plans to achieve Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021, during which he explained that SCTDA will adopt, in collaboration with partners in the tourism sector, four strategic pillars working in parallel to achieve the aim of welcoming 10 million tourists by year 2021.

As the first pillar, Sharjah will be promoted as an Ideal Family Tourism Destination by offering distinct packages and offers specially designed for families. The second pillar will be Innovative Tourism Approach to improve the tourist experience through the provision of innovative solutions. World Class Tourism Facilities and Capabilities constitute the third pillar to enhance efficiencies in tourism sector through partnership and collaborative action. International Cultural Hub will be the fourth pillar which will help achieve the Vision through effective promotion of cultural and heritage elements among families.

Guided by the wisdom and skills of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the Emirate of Sharjah has not only emerged as the Cultural Capital of the UAE but has also been crowned as the Cultural Capital the Arab World. The promotion of Sharjah as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO in 1998 has been further endorsed by its recognition as Islamic Cultural Capital in 2014 and Arab Tourism Capital in 2015.

Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority will play a key role in coordinating tourism activities through a collaborative effort involving partners in both public and private sectors. We will expand the existing tourist attractions and build on the success of our festivals and special events. We are also looking to expand tourist numbers through exhibitions and conferences and enhance Sharjahs reputation as a major international cruise tourism destination in the region, H.E. Al Noman said.

We will create advanced tourism infrastructure to offer an exceptional tourism experience that takes care of every requirement of visitors, right from the moment of their arrival until their departure. Through innovative marketing strategy, we aim to achieve a bigger market share in the tourism sector, Al Noman said.

The SCTDA Chairman said the announcement of Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021 marks a new phase in the Authoritys approach, based on innovation and creativity. As part of this Vision, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority will work with partners in public and private sectors to unveil new plans for Sharjahs tourism sector, he added.

SCTDA will utilise the Arabian Travel Market 2015 next week to communicate with major players in the global tourism sector on the objectives and themes of Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021, H.E. Al Noman concluded.

Sharjah government on Sunday launched its new brand and a campaign, 'Your Sharjah', that gives a peek into the northern emirate's successful growth over the past 52 years.

It is there with the tag line with the essence of our emirate which is 'Your Sharjah'”, said Sheikh Fahim Bin Sultan Bin Khalid Al Qasimi, executive chairman of the Department of Government Relations in Sharjah.

A multi-departmental team from Sharjah government entities took part in the campaign to reach the new brand.

“There was a lot of hard work from a dedicated team to find a new logo and identity that showcases all the fantastic things happening in Sharjah as a tourism destination, as a thriving economy for investment for trade regionally and globally, and rich culture and heritage that we can discover in Sharjah,” Sheikh Fahim said, adding that“It is not easy to a develop a brand when Sharjah has so much history.”

Replying to a question whether the emirate's popular tagline, 'Smile, you're in Sharjah', still exists, he responded with a smile: "With the number of smiles that we have in Sharjah, it is very difficult not to say 'Smile you're in Sharjah'. If I add, it would be 'Smile, you're in your Sharjah' because the emirate has something for everybody – whether you are here to discover fantastic beaches, heritage, archaeological sites and educational institutes," he added.

Sharjah wins Arab Tourism Capital award 2015

man at sea in sharjah

According to a recent report , Sharjah – a city named after its state, one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates criteria set forth by the Arab Council of Tourism Ministers. It must be actively attempting to: increase tourism exchange with other Arab countries, promote the region’s appeal on the international market, sustain natural attractions , uphold heritage sites and cultural values, etc.

Sharjah promises fun for the whole family, with beautiful white beaches and water sports, camping along the coast, a “cultural palace” and a history museum, and interminable shopping opportunities. The Blue Souk, or Central Souk, is where 600 merchants set up shop. Then there’s the Souk al Arsah, the oldest market place in the UAE, where one can find genuine pearls from the Gulf.

The honor of being named Arab Tourism Capital is showcased in the brightly colored logo shown above. There’s something special about the skyline that forms the bottom border…did you see it?

If you read Arabic, look closer: the buildings spell out “Sharjah.” This graphic design is the perfect pictorial representation of what Sharjah is proud to be: a modern city that embraces its Arabic roots.

Sharjah stands out for its architectural and cultural wealth. Its touristic sites include historical areas like Heart of Sharjah and modern sites like Al Qasba and Al Majaz waterfront.

Sharjah’s cultural wealth has been aptly recognised regionally and internationally. In 1998, it was named ‘The Cultural Capital of the Arab World’ by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and in 2014, it was named ‘The Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014’ by Organisation of Islamic Countries. In 2015, it was named ‘The Capital of Arab Tourism’.
