December Cruises

December is a magical month for many reasons. Christmas is of course on the horizon, so there is an air of magic everywhere. The weather is chilly and perfect for hibernating in front of the fire with a warm drink, and the end of the year looms with the promise of new beginnings in the next one.

But sometimes, the call of travelling abroad during this period is loud and if it becomes overwhelming, then perhaps you should answer it? Leaving behind the darkness of December in the UK is something many of dream to do…so maybe it’s time to make it your reality on cruises in December 2023 or December 2024.

At this time of year, there are plenty of fabulous destinations you can travel to which will provide all the warmth you might be craving at the height of winter. Perhaps it’s just a touch of pre-Christmas winter sun you’re after or perhaps it is a voyage that will see you cruising exotic lands over the festive period. You can see how other countries celebrate their Christmases, be treated whilst on board and even ring in the New Year in far flung lands.

So whatever the reasons for taking December cruises, there are plenty of options available. From the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean, the Americas to Asia, you can be in the most beautiful, iconic and exotic parts of the world having an experience that you will never get back at home.

So why not carry on reading and find out everything you need to know about cruises in December and when you’re ready, give our expert Connoisseurs a call to find out more.

Destinations

Rivers of europe.

At this time of year, the climate in Europe is hardly what we would call optimal, but this means it is perfect for you to explore the waterways of certain parts and visit Christmas markets along the way on December cruises.

Choose to cruise in December down the Main, Rhine or Danube, and you’ll get to see where the traditions all began. Buy some stunning, handmade souvenirs as the perfect gifts and sample the local mulled wines to warm your soul.

Alternatively, you could cruise Southern France by sailing the Rhone and the Saone and see how the French enjoy their winter months on December cruises. A river cruise is a romantic way of seeing Europe and will give you the perfect opportunity to have some festive fun with a difference.

The Caribbean

The Caribbean is one of the most sought-after cruise destinations of all thanks to the romance associated with tropical islands dotted across an azure sea, soft reggae beats and the warm and welcoming nature of the locals. Although the recommended season to travel to the Caribbean is November to April, it can be the case that early December cruises are a little cheaper as many people want to stay at home to prepare for the upcoming festive season!

So a cruise in December 2023 or December 2024 will be nothing short of idyllic from a seasonal point of view, and from a price point of view! The climate at this time of year is perfect – slightly cooler, particularly in the north of the region – you won’t be overly warm whilst trying to see the sights. It is also outside of the hurricane season, meaning you are likely to avoid them – a huge bonus – although in the far south, they are somewhat rarer! There will be slightly less rain too so all in all, it’s a really good time for you to travel here.

As the Caribbean has been featuring on the itineraries of ultra-luxury cruise lines for years, there has been an increasing number of itineraries created to journey further and see more of this stunning area. Of course, you can visit the old favourites such as Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua, but if you choose to cruise the Caribbean with Oceania for example, you can take a more in-depth tour. You’ll visit ports such as Terre-de-Haut; this island is the most easterly one in the Îles des Saintes which forms part of the archipelago of Guadeloupe.

You can take a stop at the Cabrits National Park in Dominica too and explore the tropical forest, reefs and wetlands. Sail with Seabourn and enjoy ports such as Port Elizabeth on Bequia, literally meaning ‘island of the cloud’, the largest of the Grenadines.

Known for sailing and towns with waterfront bars, restaurants and shops you can enjoy a glorious day on this beautiful island. And from the largest to the smallest…you will also visit Mayreau Island which is the tiniest of the Grenadines!

Just one and a half square miles, you’ll find no proper roads and very few vehicles. But there are perfect snorkelling spots to enjoy! Or perhaps spend Christmas Eve and Day on board your Azamara ship, cruising the open seas where you’ll be treated to a range of festive events.

All of the ultra-luxury cruise lines specialise in the Caribbean so you can also enjoy fantastic voyages with Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Oceania Cruises, and SeaDream with their December cruises too.

If you’re looking for something a little different for your December cruises in the Caribbean, you’ll also have the opportunity to sail on a yacht-style cruise. SeaDream have a variety of sailings in this part of the world and their ships will have a distinctly intimate feel as well as making you feel more like a true sailor!

Sail from Marigot to Castries or take a Puerto Rican round-trip – you’ll love the feeling of sailing around these beautiful islands all from the luxury of a yacht.

South America

No matter when you travel to this incredible continent, you will simply be blown away and December cruises are no different. And with itineraries labelled with such exciting names as ‘Lands of Fire, Peaks of Ice’ and ‘Southernmost Seafarer’, how can your interest not be piqued?! Several of the ultra-luxury cruise lines excel in this region and with good reason – they take you to see more of the destinations on the list and get you closer to the heart of them.

So take December cruises with Regent, Silversea, Seabourn and Oceania and you won’t be disappointed, we assure you. You will realise how far from home you really are when you start your journey in cities such as Buenos Aires. Reminiscent of a European city, the locals still hold the belief that they are indeed more European than their neighbours and with such stunning Italian and Spanish influence across it, it’s not hard to see why. Sail away from Argentina to the beats of the tango and find yourself in Uruguay and Montevideo, which is the nation’s only major city.

Continue your journey and head to Sea Wolves Island where you’ll see a colony of endangered sea lions and seals and even enjoy a visit to the Falkland Islands to learn more about their rich history. You’ll find a home away from home in Stanley, which has all the charm of a rural English village and see red telephone boxes, shops and even a local pub or two! You’ll continue onwards to the bottom of the earth and arrive in Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city in Argentina.

Head to the peaks of Torres del Paine in Punta Arenas and then find yourself in Laguna San Rafael – a simply breath-taking UNESCO World Biosphere reserve. It has a wall of blue ice, towering 200 feet above you that is the world’s lowest-latitude tidewater glacier. Sadly, the glacier is now in retreat and has been since 1960 but until that point, the wilderness had remained largely unchanged. Experience the laid-back local culture of Chilean Puerto Chacabuco, and watch as Patagonian sheets of ice fall into the sea. Look out for Black Necked Swans and the endangered Giant Condor too. End your December cruises in Santiago and you’ll fly home in time for Christmas with the family.

If you fancy something even more involved and immersive, you can even take an expedition cruise to South America in December. Scenic Eclipse will be sailing its waters and heading to South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and even as far as Antarctica so you can experience these amazing places from the comfort of your supremely indulgent discovery yacht. Scenic will ensure you have a once in a lifetime experience with this extraordinary voyage – you’ll be heading there right in the peak of breeding season.

See colonies of King Penguins, walk in Shackleton’s footsteps and explore the quaint streets of the Falkland Islands as well as uncovering the secrets of the Antarctic Peninsula. You’ll gasp at magnificent icescapes and be surrounded by wildlife such as whales, seals, penguins and a huge range of marine birds. It may be a little colder than the UK in December but it will be worth it to see these amazing sights.

South America is a wonderful blend of cultures, scenery, wildlife and diversity and can be enjoyed on many levels. You’ll see more of it on a cruise than by traditional land-based holidays so give yourself an early Christmas present by heading on cruises in December 2023 or December 2024 to this incredible continent.

Ever fancied seeing sunrise on safari? Or journeying from sands to safaris? Now is your chance with one of the ultra-luxury Africa December cruises specialists such as Regent, Oceania or Azamara. If you start in Cape Town, you will be instantly thrust into the cultural melting pot that lends this city its charm. Of course, you’ll see the stunning figure of Table Mountain looming over you but beneath it, you’ll find evidence of the complex history South Africa has been through. Explore the colourful Malay Quarter and see one of the most scenic stretches of road in the world at Chapman’s Peak.

As you journey onwards to Walvis Bay, you’ll find a natural lagoon dusted almost completely pink with the large colony of flamingos. If you choose to head inland you can see the Namib Desert, visit the colonial town of Swakopmund or head to what are said to be the highest dunes in any desert, mountainous and ochre-coloured, in Sossusvlei. December cruises will take you around more of Africa’s stunning ports and cities, including Maputo Mozambique, before you arrive in Richard’s Bay, the gateway to Zululand and the KwaZulu wildlife reserves.

Why Elite Ocean

If you’d like a broader itinerary, you can include the mystical Middle East too on December cruises, by starting your trip in the United Arab Emirates. See the opulence of oil-rich countries that has risen from the ground, with the most decadent hotels in the world and impressive shopping. See the souks and mosques in Muscat and pass by tropical side of India before heading to the Maldivian capital, Male. See yet more castaway islands of the Seychelles and then arrive in Mombasa with its rich and fascinating history.

Zanzibar will provide you with the perfect opportunity to explore the wonderland beneath the ocean waves but don’t neglect to learn a little about the haunting past of slavery. As you continue on to South Africa, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the rich wildlife on safari before ending your trip in incredible Cape Town. Africa is a continent so rich in everything that you simply can’t fail to be disappointed and by going on cruises in December, you’re arriving in the height of their summer so you’ll benefit from the warmest weather too.

Whilst you can see parts of Asia on a cruise that lands in Africa, if you wish to see more of this huge region, then take cruises in December 2023 or December 2024 which are dedicated here. Meander through the Middle East with Oceania where you’ll take in all the modernity of Dubai, see the stunning fjords of Khasab and watch the perhaps even see dolphins playing. Travelling to Oman, you can see the incredible mosques and sultan’s palace and then you’ll cruise the waters of the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Bahrain, Doha, Abu Dhabi with its incredible Sir Bani Yas Island are all on the list too so you can explore this magical part of Asia, seeing more than you thought possible.

But if it’s the Far East you’d prefer to travel to, why not take December cruises with Silversea from Singapore to Hong Kong? The skylines of these stunning places will dazzle you, as will everything else in between. Explore the old versus the new in beguiling Singapore, where you’ll find traditional enclaves in and amongst the high-tech areas. See the colonial heritage mixed within the evidence of strong economic growth, visit the Empress Place Building and enjoy a Singapore Sling in Raffles Hotel.

There is Little India, Chinatown and the Arab Quarter to visit and don’t forget the impressive shopping you can also find. Your other ports will include Ho Chi Minh City where you can get an insight into the atrocities of the Vietnam War but beyond that, you’ll see modern exuberance in a distinctly Asian style, not forgetting the French colonial influence. Hue sits in the foothills of the Annamite Mountains and was once Vietnam’s Imperial City. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in time, all of its former glory will be restored.

In Ha Long Bay, you’ll see the limestone tombstones jutting clear out of the water, dotted about the misty lagoons. This majestic UNESCO World Heritage site will imprint on your memory thanks to its unusual beauty. Natural parks offer biodiversity and there is so much to see here it simply must be visited to be believed.

You’ll end your voyage in Hong Kong where you might want to consider extending your stay so you can enjoy as much of it as you possibly can. Outlying islands, a communist regime, former colonial rule, economic prosperity and gleaming skyscrapers; this city of contrasts has it all and more.

Take a grander voyage with December cruises from Seabourn and their 28-day adventure entitled ‘Grand Southeast Asia’ and grand it is! Circle Vietnam and head to the Hundred Islands National Park in the Philippines, you’ll finally end in Singapore.

You’ll see some of the remotest, most exotic and wonderful places on this epic trip which will see you away well into the New Year. And if India is somewhere which has always been on your must-see list, then why not take a journey from Mumbai to Phuket? See Goa, Mangalore, Cochin and even pass by Yangon in Myanmar before arriving in Phuket. This will give you a whole world of diversity and enjoyment.

There really is so much to see on December cruises to Asia, all brought to you by the ultra-luxury cruise lines – from Oceania to Silversea, Seabourn, Regent and Azamara you’ll have an unrivalled experience.

Cruises in December are a fantastic time to visit this part of the world as its climate becomes more temperate and tolerable.

Rivers of Asia

The vastness of this continent must not be underestimated and you will find that one of the ways to get right to the heart of it is with luxury river cruises in December. Sail the Irrawaddy with Scenic and explore Bagan Pakokku, Amarapura, Mandalay and more, all in complete luxury. You’ll see artisans who have perfected their crafts, have the option to take a hot air balloon flight over Bagan or take a tuktuk to a local cheroot factory.

You could also take the opportunity to explore the Mekong in December, where you’ll sail the centre of Vietnam, Cambodia and also head to Bangkok. December cruises along the rivers in Asia are well-timed thanks to the more inviting climate which has less humidity than at other times of the year. December cruises are a chance to visit cultures who won’t even be aware of our festive celebrations and immerse yourself in rich heritage, stunning scenery and diversity across many countries on the same trip.

Australasia & New Zealand

There is no better place to head on December cruises to escape a harsh UK winter. Spending Christmas on the other side of the world is such a fantastic experience; if you’ve never spent Christmas Day in the sunshine then perhaps now is the time on one of the amazing December cruises on offer – and we are pretty sure you might enjoy the change!

The ultra-luxury cruise lines all take great pride in exploring this region well so you find December cruises itineraries from Regent, Silversea, Seabourn, Azamara, Oceania and Ponant all offering you the sort of holidays you don’t know how to choose between. You’ll see Queensland’s Thursday Island, cruise the Coral Sea and start to head south from Cairns to Airlie Beach and then Brisbane. You’ll eventually end in Sydney and whilst you might have already spent a good chunk of December away from home, we’d recommend an extra stay here to really explore it.

If you can stay as long as New Year’s Eve, you could even experience the fireworks over Sydney Harbour – one of the most spectacular sights there is. And let’s not forget, you’ll be half a day ahead of those back home, practically living in the future so you get to ring in the New Year first!

Or what about Bali, the Outback and New Zealand? With this itinerary you’ll get to see even more of the other side of the world, even heading inland to the famous ‘bush’ which many adventures won’t take you on. Again, you’ll see Indonesia but this time you’ll go so far as Melbourne, then Tasmania and onwards to New Zealand. The fjords of Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound will all astound you with their natural beauty and you’ll see a huge amount of the rest of New Zealand too including Dunedin, Akaroa, Wellington, Napier, the Bay of Islands and Auckland.

Travelling so far really needs to be worth your while. The beauty of cruising this region means you get to see far more than you would on any other type of holiday and you can explore all your surroundings from the comfort of your luxurious ship whilst only unpacking once. We can’t recommend a luxury cruise here enough if you’ve always wanted to see the other side of the world.

Transatlantic Cruises

If you’re travelling at Christmastime, you don’t have to stick to the sorts of destinations you often hear about. No, instead, you can take a trip with a difference on December cruises such as a transatlantic expedition with Regent. You’ll be away just before Christmas and will take two weeks cruising from the southern tip of South Africa, Cape Town, up the coast of east Africa and across the breadth of the Atlantic Ocean.

You’ll take a stop in St Helena and see where Napoleon was imprisoned before continuing onwards all the way to Rio de Janeiro. This highly unusual and interesting itinerary will suit those who want to get more out of their December cruises so why not ask us about how we can make it even more special by extending your stay in South America?

Grand Voyages

Of course, there will always be other types of cruises in December you can take and given its such a festive time of year, perhaps you should indulge in something a little more extravagant such as a Grand Voyage? These extended itineraries take you across multiple regions and countries and often see you away from home for several weeks.

There are many December cruises itineraries to explore from Silversea, Seabourn, Azamara and Oceania and will take you to the farthest reaches of the globe such as Africa and the Indian Ocean and even Central America and the Panama Canal. So if you would like something more exciting from December cruises, get in touch with our expert Connoisseurs and they will be able to guide you to exactly the right one to suit your personal requirements.

Festivities on December Cruises

If you are planning on taking a cruise in December 2023 or December 2024, you will need to bear in mind a few things. You will be away either just before Christmas or even over the festive period, so it goes without saying you need to take this into account.

The last thing you want to do is feel as though you are missing out back at home if you are on the other side of the world, trying to have the time of your life! If it is just a one off, the chances are lower, particularly if you have been planning this for some time. And ideally, you will be enjoying your luxury cruise holiday so much with all it has to offer that it simply won’t occur to you to be homesick. But just make sure you are prepared! The elite ocean cruise lines, as well as the yacht-style and expedition ones will all ensure that they do what they can to make it a fun celebration on board.

But it is important to remember you are there to see the destinations so if you are docked in a port on Christmas Day, you might not have a day of excitement on the ship as it will be presumed you are ashore. There will of course be some festive celebrations in the evening after your return but don’t be disappointed in the day!

December can be a fantastic time to travel if you aren’t a huge lover of all the hype of Christmas throughout the month and if you want to escape to some warmer climes. So if you are considering it, we recommend you take the plunge – give us a call and we will discuss all the options to set your wanderlust alight.

FAQs about cruises in December

Your world cruise frequently asked questions answered..., why should i cruise in december.

Firstly, it’s a great time to get away from the freezing cold of back home and enjoy the balmier temperatures of the more tropical parts of the world. You can escape the madness of a lot of Christmas overkill (as long as you have sorted your present buying and any other planning in advance, that is) and you will be able to revel in your holiday alone. December cruises happen to be the perfect time of year to travel to many of the exotic places too, so you’ll see them at their absolute best. It’s also an opportunity to travel further than you might do in the summer months.

Can I sail close to home in December?

We understand that you might not want to go too far in order to ensure you are still close to family at this important time of year. There are some river cruises which will take you to the Christmas markets, and some which will provide that glimpse of winter sun in the Canary Islands, but other than that the conditions simply aren’t as preferable near to home so it is best to travel further afield to the likes of Asia or the Caribbean.

What type of cruise can I take in December?

If you pick your destination wisely, you can pick all types of cruises in December, from elite ocean to luxury river, yacht-style and expedition too. It is true that you won’t have the breadth of possibility to explore everywhere, but the destinations on offer on December cruises will more than satisfy your desire to travel.

When is best to book a December cruise?

ASAP! With cruising, particularly luxury cruising, you pretty much always find that you’ll secure the best price and benefits (not to mention the itinerary and suite of your choice) when you book it sooner rather than later. These cruises are not subject to as much fluctuation as other types of holiday and you may find flights can be cheaper the earlier you book, especially when travelling long haul. With smaller ships, plus the fact that there are fewer cruises to choose

Panache Cruises' Words of Wisdom

It may sound odd but December is peak season for certain regions (such as Australia and New Zealand, and even the Caribbean) so you will find flights are not at their lowest. Speak to us about optimal times to book and we will be well-placed to advise you on all things flight-related.

Back at home it will be freezing and damp but when you’re on a cruise at this time of year, the chances are you’ll be heading somewhere much warmer. Unless you choose an expedition to Antarctica of course! But don’t forget to plan for where it is you are going…and take something warm in your hand luggage for your return to Blighty!

As with any time of year, you will be exposed to the most stunning local and indigenous species and scenery so you need to ensure you treat them with respect to ensure their preservation. Take pictures, but nothing more so that other visitors can still enjoy them in years to come.

With a voyage so far away from home, you are bound to meet people from cultures that are wildly different to yours, many of whom might have a different religion and as such won’t even realise that we are in the midst of our festive period! Treat them all with the respect you would hope for and ideally, you will receive it.

If you’re heading away in December, why not make your trip even more special with a private tour, helicopter excursion or even a trip on a submarine? You could treat it as an extra Christmas present for yourself which we will be happy to arrange for you.

Let’s be honest, unless you are doing something Christmas-centric, it will be wisest to head as far away from the British climate as you can get in December! Take the chance to visit the other side of the world and you will be nothing but delighted and excited by every port you stop at.

Why cruise in December?

Discover the many reasons why December cruises remain a popular option for travellers, with exciting winter escapes and Christmas cruises to choose from.

Whether it's the perfect pre-Christmas getaway, with the chance to explore unique and fascinating markets or it's just the perfect excuse to escape the bad weather and find somewhere warm to unwind, December cruises offer a chance to get away and see the world in style. We have some amazing adults-only cruises, as well as a number of more family-oriented itineraries and ships if you want to take the kids with you.

Cruising the Caribbean in December

Take a Caribbean cruise and you can experience a tropical paradise of absolute serenity. Almost two-thirds of our cruises in December are to the Caribbean islands, letting you enjoy the best of the dry season with immaculate white beaches and gorgeous crystal-clear waters, creating a taste of ultimate relaxation.

There is a mix of short breaks and longer Caribbean getaways with a range of cruise lines and ships to suit every travelling party. So, whether it's an action-packed family break or something a bit more calm and elegant, the Caribbean makes for a magnificent cruise destination.

Sailing to Europe in December

Away from the Caribbean, there are numerous cruises around Europe during December. Unlike the summer months, more of the cruises are tailored towards the northern region rather than the Mediterranean although voyages to both are available. December is one of the better times of the year for possibly seeing the Northern Lights in Norway, while a city break to France, Holland or Belgium is ideal if you want a mini cruise with the option to visit nearby Christmas markets.

Where else to go?

Cruises to the Panama Canal in Central America, as well as around the continent of South America, are more readily available in December than in many other months, including a mix of mini cruises and those lasting a week or two. See stunning wildlife around Brazil, Peru and the Galapagos Islands along with lively and interesting cities.

Other cruises in December visit the wonders of the Far East, as well as destinations around Africa and Australia, while transatlantic options let you spend more time at sea if you're more interested in the cruising side of your holiday and spending days at sea.

Booking your December cruise

Leaving the bitter cold and pre-Christmas stresses behind, cruising during this month is a perfect excuse to get away from it all. We have a fantastic range of cruises to choose from, with a range of exceptional cruise lines and an amazing fleet of ships to offer the ultimate cruise experience. Call our Cruise Concierge today to book your cruise for December 2023, 2024 & 2025.

Short-haul December cruises

vienna december cruises

Austria Vienna

A December river cruise along the Danube to Vienna in is the ultimate way to immerse yourself in all things Christmassy thanks to numerous markets popping up throughout the Austrian city’s streets and squares.

One of the most iconic Christmas markets in Vienna is the Christkindlmarkt in front of the City Hall – expect a dazzling spectacle of lights, decorations and delicious treats including roasted chestnuts, gingerbread and aromatic mulled wine. Meanwhile the Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market offers a royal setting with its market stalls set against the backdrop of the historic palace.

Festive charm can be found across other Viennese neighbourhoods, for example, artistic Spittelberg, elegant Belvedere Palace and Innere Stadt, where the grand architecture and museums are adorned with seasonal decorations. Feeling active? Try your hand at ice skating at Rathausplatz (which will definitely earn you that hot chocolate).

River cruise ships typically dock near the iconic Reichsbrucke or Schwedenplatz in Vienna, providing convenient access to the historic city centre and the Innere Stadt’s attractions via the U-Bahn lines 1 and 4, just a few minutes away.

Which cruise lines sail to Vienna?

Viking River Cruises, AmaWaterways, Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, Scenic River Cruises, Tauck River Cruises, Emerald Waterways and Avalon Waterways all cruise to Vienna.

France Strasbourg

Known as the “Capital of Christmas,” Strasbourg boasts one of the oldest and most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe – so book yourself onto a Rhine River December cruise to unwrap its magic.

The city’s Christkindelsmärik is one of the oldest and most picturesque Christmas markets in Europe, and transforms Strasbourg into a winter wonderland, with magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral providing a stunning backdrop.

On shore excursions during your December cruises, wander through the historic cobbled streets and take in the hundreds of beautifully-adorned stalls bursting with artisanal crafts (perfect for Christmas prezzies), seasonal goodies like spiced mulled wine and traditional bredele cookies (key fuel for all that shopping), and the scent of evergreen trees filling the air (so much better than that scented candle at home, right?).

Cruise ships typically do not dock directly in Strasbourg city centre and instead dock at the nearby port of Kehl, Germany, which is just across the river. Kehl is easily accessible from Strasbourg via various transportation options, including buses and trams.

Which cruise lines sail to Strasbourg?

Viking River Cruises, AmaWaterways, Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, Scenic River Cruises, Tauck River Cruises, CroisiEurope and Riviera Travel all cruise to Strasbourg.

Long-haul December cruises

Honduras

Central America Honduras

Eager for warm, tropical weather with a helping of active fun? Take a December cruise to Honduras, in Central America. With the Caribbean coastline to the north and lush rainforests to the south, the country offers opportunities for both beach relaxation and eco-adventures.

Popular Honduran destinations include the island of Roatán and the Bay Islands, where you can explore eye-catching coral reefs and try your hand at water sports. The sand here is superbly white, making for tip-top snorkelling and diving.

On the mainland, explore the Unesco-listed ancient Mayan ruins of Copán, hike in Pico Bonito National Park (the most biodiverse in Honduras complete with a namesake mountain) or visit the charming colonial town of Comayagua.

December marks the start of the dry season, so it’s the ideal time to visit Honduras for pleasant climes (think, less-sticky), cultural festivities and natural beauty – plus there are fewer tourists than in the ensuing peak months (January to April).

If you’re into birds, you’re in luck on December cruises to Honduras – keep an eye out for hawks, eagles, parrots, hummingbirds and loons.

Cruise ships in Honduras dock at various ports, with Mahogany Bay in Roatán one of the most common and well-developed cruise terminals, providing easy access to the island’s beaches and activities. Some cruise ships also dock at the Port of Roatán (Coxen Hole) to provide access to the town’s local culture and markets.

Which cruise lines sail to Honduras?

Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean , Celebrity Cruises, Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Virgin Voyages and MSC Cruises all cruise to Honduras.

Caribbean Martinique

Martinique in December is a delightful tropical escape and a popular Caribbean cruise port of call. The island boasts lush rainforests, pristine beaches and friendly, French-Caribbean culture… oh, and there are average highs of 28C. Nice one.

Roam the vibrant markets and historic sites in Fort-de-France, set forth on hiking adventures in the volcanic peaks of Mount Pelée, breathe in the heady scents of the lush Jardin de Balata botanicals gardens, or simply relax on picturesque beaches – good options include the white sandy sweep at Les Saline and the black shores of Anse Noire.

Cruising in December to Martinique also means you can enjoy a taste of Chanté-Nwel – one of the island’s biggest annual festivities – held throughout the month. Lend an ear to locals singing carols to Creole rhythms and sink your teeth into island favourites such as yams, pâtés, boudin creole (blood sausage) and yule logs.

Of course it wouldn’t be a Caribbean cruise call without a sip of rum, and the good news is that Martinique boasts a Christmas cocktail called shrubb, made from orange peels, sugarcane syrup and white rum (be careful though, it’s powerful stuff!). There’s La Route de Rhum distillery tour too, if you take to the beverage. Hic.

Cruise ships typically dock at the Pointe Simon Cruise Terminal in Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique. The primary cruise port in Martinique, it’s conveniently located in the heart of the city and provides easy access to attractions, shopping areas and cultural sites.

Which cruise lines sail to Martinique?

Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises , P&O Cruises, Holland America Line , Princess Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Seabourn, Ponant, Silversea Cruises , Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Virgin Voyages all cruise to Martinique.

USA Florida

Opting for December cruises to Florida guarantees an escape from the winter chill. The Sunshine State lives up to its name, offering lovely weather with average temperatures ranging from 14°C to 26°C.

Whether you’re enjoying the theme parks in Orlando, exploring the art scene in Miami or relaxing on the white-sand beaches along the Gulf Coast or Atlantic, there’s something for everyone…including the West Indian manatees who come to enjoy the subtropical climes.

The sea cows migrate to Crystal River National Wildlife Reserve (an hour and a half drive northwest of Orlando) to loll in the warm, clear shallow creeks and pools. The manatees can be viewed from boardwalks and platforms – but there’s also the option to snorkel with the curious but peaceful animals on an ethically run tour.

December also brings Christmas magic to Florida, with festive decorations, events and boat parades so you’ll still get a dose of festive fun – even if there’s no snow in sight.

Cruise ships dock at a selection of ports in Florida, depending on their specific itineraries. Major cruise ports in Florida include Miami (known as the cruise capital of the world and one of the busiest cruise ports globally), Fort Lauderdale , Port Canaveral (near Orlando), Tampa and Jacksonville.

Which cruise lines sail to Florida?

Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises , Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, Cunard Line and Regent Seven Seas Cruises all cruise to Florida.

China Hong Kong

Hong Kong in December comes alive with festive decorations and cool, pleasant weather (15-20°C) making it an ideal time to explore its dynamic culture and stunning skyline. Plus, if you stay until the 31st, the New Year’s Eve fireworks are spectacular!

Don’t miss the renowned Christmas lights along Victoria Harbour, a symphony of impressive displays and multimedia shows. Take a tram ride to Victoria Peak for breathtaking views of the city or immerse yourself in the city’s buzzy street markets.

The Hong Kong WinterFest adds to the holiday cheer with markets, concerts and seasonal treats while Hong Kong Disneyland also goes big on Christmas celebrations. Stocking up on Christmas presents (for loved ones and yourself!) is gentle on the wallet thanks to the many winter sales held in December. Queen’s Road Central is where you’ll find the big names, Hollywood Road and Cat Street antiques, Sham Shui Po electrical items and fashion finds, and Tsim Sha Tsui well, everything.

Mild temperatures make December perfect for outdoor activities, such as hiking in scenic country parks (consider Lantau island or a section of the MacLehose Trail) or taking a ferry ride to the outlying islands.

Cruise ships dock at Hong Kong’s Ocean Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui and the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in Kowloon, offering easy access to the city’s shopping, dining and cultural attractions.

Which cruise lines sail to Hong Kong?

Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises , Viking Ocean Cruises, Seabourn, Cunard, Oceania Cruises, Azamara, Windstar, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises all cruise to Hong Kong.

USA San Diego

San Diego – a popular embarkation and disembarkation point for cruises travelling to the Mexican Riviera and the Pacific Coast, as well as passages through the Panama Canal – offers a delightful blend of mild weather (average highs of 19°C) and holiday festivities come December.

This makes the last month of the year an ideal time to explore the city’s beautiful coastline, from La Jolla’s pristine beaches and the surf spots at Encintas to the iconic views at Sunset Cliffs. You can also potter around its village-like neighbourhoods such as foodie Little Italy, alternative Ocean Beach and bar-packed Gaslamp Quarter on cruises to San Diego.

Other great experiences include the museums in Balboa Park, comprising Air & Space Natural History and Art, while the cliff-top trails of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve are great for spotting dolphins and migrating grey whales which pass here between December and March.

As for Christmas festivities, San Diego’s Parade of Lights sees a festooned flotilla of 80-odd boats take to the streets and the annual December Nights festival at Balboa Park is a must-visit, offering cultural performances, decorations and delicious international cuisine, food-truck style. Don’t miss the festive events at the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld where you can experience the magic of the season.

San Diego cruise ships typically dock at the B Street Cruise Terminal which is located in the heart of downtown and provides easy access to the city’s attractions.

Which cruise lines sail to San Diego?

Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Holland America Line, Disney Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises all cruise to San Diego.

Chile/Argentina Southern Fjords

Visiting the Southern Fjords of Chile and Argentina in December offers a stunning adventure during the Southern Hemisphere’s summer – and a cruise is absolutely the best way to do it thanks to the month’s ‘warm’ clement weather of 10-15°C and less ice blocking the route.

The Tierra del Fuego archipelago is located right at the bottom of South America – an island-studded destination fringed with towering glaciers and snaked with majestic fjords. Cape Horn is right at the tip and from there it’s on to Antarctica , if your cruise takes you all the way.

Embark on December cruise expeditions to see the awe-inspiring glaciers of Patagonia, such as Perito Moreno in Argentina and the Pio XI Glacier in Chile, both accessible by boat tours or take a Zodiac ride to the Tuckers islets to admire a colony of Magellanic penguins.

Hike through the rare sub-polar forest at Ainsworth Bay and delve into charming coastal towns such as Ushuaia [pictured] – dubbed the “End of the World” – and Punta Arenas, known for its wildlife and historic sites.

Cruise ships visiting the Southern Fjords of Chile and Argentina often dock at the key ports of Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas and Ushuaia.

Which cruise lines sail to the Southern fjords?

Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Ponant, Silversea Cruises and Lindblad Expeditions all feature itineraries to Patagonia and the Chilean and Argentine fjords.

Ushuaia lighthouse

South Atlantic Ocean Falkland Islands

Not that far off are the Falkland Islands , which are also a terrific December cruise destination. While the islands’ weather can be unpredictable, it’s a prime time for wildlife enthusiasts as the month marks the breeding season for many bird species, including elephant seals, whales and albatrosses.

Set foot on rugged landscapes, hike along pristine coastlines, and observe incredible wildlife in its natural habitat. Penguins chicks are just starting to hatch at this time of year – visit Volunteer Point for King penguins, Beaker Island for Magellanic and gentoo, and Pebble Island for rockhopper and macaroni. For other seabirds and black-browed albatrosses, take a boat trip to Carcass Island with its imposing 1,247ft cliffs.

Cruise ships visiting the Falkland Islands typically anchor at the capital, Stanley. Passengers are then transported ashore via tender boats to the main jetty, allowing for easy access to the town’s attractions – including iconic red telephone booths and post boxes straight out of London.

Expedition vessels typically incorporate the Falklands into their itineraries as part of a broader route that includes South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula .

Which cruise lines sail to the Falkland Islands?

Azamara, Holland America Line, Aurora Expeditions, Hurtigruten, Oceania Cruises, Seabourn, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea Cruises and Lindblad Expeditions all cruise to the Falkland Islands.

Caribbean Puerto Rico

December cruises to Puerto Rico offer a heady mix of warm tropical weather, rich cultural celebrations and outdoor adventures. With temperatures ranging from 14°C to 22°C it’s an excellent time to explore the island’s diverse landscapes, from the lush El Yunque Rainforest (stretch the sea legs on a rainforest hike) to such pristine beaches as Flamenco and Luquillo.

San Juan, the capital, dazzles with festive holiday lights, music and culinary delights, and the Old San Juan district’s historic charm is a highlight too – it was founded back in 1521. Lively second-city Ponce is also worth a visit if you have time on your December cruise Puerto Rico.

Enjoy traditional holiday festivities such as the San Sebastián Street Festival and relish carol singing in the streets and churches – as well as shops bursting with Christmas trinkets. If you’re around on December 28 you’ll be treated the high jinks of Día de los Inocentes – it’s much like April Fool’s Day and everyone tries to play tricks. Hatillo is the best spot for this jolly affair.

Hungry? Savour local festive specialities like lechón (suckling pig), arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), pork and potato pasteles (steamed plantain tamales), and coquet (a sweet spiced coconut drink).

For active fun, surfers should head to Rincón while the islands of Vieques and Culebra offer quieter sands and Bioluminescent Bay serves up amazing after-dark kayaking.

Cruise ships in Puerto Rico typically dock at the San Juan Bay Marina and the Pan American Pier in San Juan.

Which cruise lines sail to Puerto Rico?

Royal Caribbean, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Seabourn, Explora Journeys, Viking Ocean Cruises, Virgin Voyages, Azamara, Ponant, P&O Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises, Oceania Cruises and Windstar Cruises all cruise to Puerto Rico.

Ring in the holidays with our December cruise deals.

Sometimes, the best holiday gift isn’t something you unwrap at all. It’s something you open simply by clicking a button on a computer screen. Maybe it’s even a gift you gave yourself. This year, treat either yourself or your loved ones to something better than a new gaming console or yet another pair of wool socks — an epic cruise with Virgin Voyages. Our December cruise deals make cruising a no-brainer gift this year, with stellar savings and value that’ll make an already memorable holiday even better.

3 of the best places to sail away from winter in 2024

You might just feel like cozying up by the TV with some hot cocoa during these cold winter months, but what if we told you that you could be reclining on a hammock in 80 degree sunshine with a paloma in hand? Yeah, we thought so. Whether it’s sailing the warm waters of the tropical Caribbean, or exploring the far-flung South Pacific with a voyage down under, we’re teeing up some pretty incredible getaways this winter.

Visiting the Caribbean is always a treat, but it’s particularly gratifying when all your friends are at home navigating black ice on their way to work. Our Riviera Maya itinerary is one of the best December cruises, leaving from Miami and sailing to Mexico, stopping at Cozumel, Playa del Carmen. You’ll also spend an additional day and night at The Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas. Our special Scarlet Caribbean Holiday 2023 voyage is another great way to escape to the Caribbean this holiday season. Sailing from Miami on December 22 to Puerto Plata and Bimini, we’d gladly swap out our traditional Christmas firs for some nice palm fronds this year.

The South Pacific might fly under your radar, but it’s actually one of the best places to visit in December — and, well, all year round. Our epic 5-night cruise from Melbourne to Hobart brings you from mainland Australia across the Bass Strait to the rugged island of Tasmania, where you'll stay overnight in its capital.

Are there better cruise deals in December than Black Friday and Cyber Week?

When it comes to savings, Thanksgiving gets most of the attention. Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, we tend to think that once December hits, we’re doomed to pay full price for everything. Well, at Virgin Voyages that’s not exactly true. We’ve got some irresistible December cruise deals that’ll give you just the motivation you need to pull the trigger on your next cruise vacation.

We’re offering a Splash for your Bash, perfect for leveling up your group trips. For $250 per cabin, you’ll get a bottomless brunch event at The Wake or Razzle Dazzle, and a special dinner party with curated drinks and desserts. And since we know the holidays can be tough on the wallet, we’re alleviating the financial stress with our monthly payment plan option. This limited-time offer lets you put $0 down when you book your next voyage.

Top 3 reasons to travel in December

December is one of the most popular months of the year for travel, particularly in the cruise industry. Ironically, what makes it so desirable for traveling is the same thing that makes it undesirable for everyday life – the weather. Sub 30-degree temps are reason enough to set sail for warmer climes. Whether you’re lounging on a white sand beach in Grand Turk, the Bahamas, or Puerto Rico, or venturing south of the equator in Sydney, Melbourne, or Hobart, we’ve got plenty of hot places in December calling your name.

If you’re looking for another reason to cruise in December, you officially have our permission to use our cruise deals as an excuse. Whether you’re taking advantage of our monthly payment plan option or getting a great deal on a group celebration by adding a Splash for your Bash , it shouldn’t take much convincing for your friends and family to see the value in a December cruise.

You probably don’t need us to tell you, but cruises are also the perfect birthday travel idea. If your birthday is in December (we’re looking at you, Sagittarius’ and Capricorns), why not celebrate with an epic voyage? So make a list of all the friends you wouldn’t mind sharing a cabin (and a few drinks) with, pick your dream birthday travel destination, and celebrate a very happy birthday in the Dominican Republic. Or Australia. Or Greece. Oh, and let JLo take care of the invites.

If all that wasn’t enough, we’ve also got special New Year’s sailings on each of our three ships, designed specifically to  help you ring in the New Year in style – including our festive sailing to Honduras aboard Scarlet Lady and our New Year’s celebration from Australia to New Zealand aboard Resilient Lady. Because while we’re pretty excited about December, it’s never too soon to start looking ahead to January.
