Cancun Tours & Excursions : Final thoughts

Whether you are looking to relax on the beach, explore Mayan ruins, or swim with the largest fish on earth, Cancun has a tour for everyone.

However, it’s important to do your research to determine which companies and tour guides are reputable and provide the type of experience you might be seeking.

This will help prevent travel mishaps, missed opportunities, and potentially wasted money.

Try to plan ahead as much as possible (typically 2-4 weeks when it comes to booking tours and excursions).

Since Cancun is such a popular destination, know that tours and excursions may fill up quickly, especially during the week of Spring Break and the summer months.

Explore as much as you can in the time you are given (and within your budget!). One of the great things about Cancun is that there’s always something to see and do with many options to fit every budget.

You can sail the Caribbean on a private catamaran or hike through underground caverns one day, and enjoy dinner and a show the next.

The opportunities are endless!

day tours in cancun mexico

Explore beyond Cancún with these top day trips to Chichén Itzá, cenotes and more © Bucha Natallia / Shutterstock

Cancún is one of Mexico’s crown jewels – a spectacular destination with stunning white-sand beaches and a nightlife that doesn’t stop.

But just beyond this bustling beach city, there’s a world of excursions and adventures that offer everything from a pleasant change of pace to a deeper understanding of the region’s richness, with ancient pyramids, otherworldly cenotes and colonial towns to explore.

Here are a few day trip options from Cancún  and all the info you need to make them happen.

A young couple driving a golf cart alongside a tropical beach

1. Relax in Isla Mujeres

Travel time: 20 to 30 minutes

A quick ferry ride from Cancún transports you to  Isla Mujeres , a laid-back island with backpacker roots. The main town is draped in murals and known for its superstar  Playa Norte – a white-sand beauty with swaying palm trees and tranquil turquoise waters, perfect for a relaxed beach day.

Take a stroll along Calle Hidalgo, a pleasant pedestrian street lined with artsy boutiques and eateries; in the evening, enjoy live music at a handful of open-air bars.

Alternatively, explore the island by golf cart, stopping at  Playa Garrafón for snorkeling and at  Punta Sur , with its crashing waves and Maya temple to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. All are easily done in a day, especially with ferries running from 5:30am to midnight.

How to get to Isla Mujeres from Cancún:  Ultramar operates two ferries from the Zona Hotelera at  Playa Tortugas and  Playa Caracol , and one just north of downtown Cancún at Puerto Juárez. Tickets are M$270 each way.

A man dives into a cenote - a sunken water hole - to join friends swimming there

2. Cenote hop along the Riviera Maya

Travel time: 1 hour

The coastal road (Hwy 307) from Cancún to Tulum is dotted with spectacular cenotes, crystal-clear pools of water found in deep underground caves or in open-air jungle settings.

Spend a day hopping between them, snorkeling and swimming ‘til dark. Most are located just south of Playa del Carmen , though new ones open yearly.

Favorites include  Cenote Azul , a luminous set of open-air cenotes with teal waters, stone walkways and overhangs for jumping into the water; Cenote Manatí, a rare oceanside cenote winding through a lush mangrove forest; and Dos Ojos, twin caverns decked out in stalagmites and connected by a chilly underground river. Snorkel gear rentals are available at each.

How to get to cenotes along the Riviera Maya from Cancún:  Colectivos (shared minivans) are an inexpensive way to travel along Hwy 307; they leave every few minutes from outside Cancún’s bus station and stop at passengers' request.

If they’re full, however, they won’t pick up passengers, so you may have to wait for an open seat between cenotes. Alternatively, rent a car for the day or hire a taxi to take you from spot to spot.

Snorkelers observe a sea turtle from a safe distance as it sits on the ocean floor

3. Swim with sea turtles in Akumal

Travel time: 1 hour 20 minutes

The calm, clear waters directly in front of the beachfront hamlet of Akumal are designated as a marine conservation area. And with good reason: endangered loggerhead, hawksbill and green sea turtles feed, rest and nest here, and can be spotted in and around Akumal Bay year-round.

Come here for a snorkeling tour of the turtle feeding grounds, where they’re most frequently seen (guides are required to enter the water and are easily hired on the beach); or join staff members of  Centro Ecológico Akumal for an evening walk to see nesting turtles and check on nests. Remember to give turtles plenty of space and do not attempt to touch them.

Before you leave, spend some quality time on the gorgeous palm-laden beach, then head north to Half Moon Bay for an oceanfront meal at  La Buena Vida .

How to get to Akumal from Cancún:  Colectivos from Cancún drop passengers off at the turn-off to Akumal, a dusty 1km (0.6-mile) walk to the beach. For more comfort, rent a car or hire a cab. There’s a parking lot and a taxi stand just outside the town arch.

4. Experience the Yucatan at Xcaret eco-park

Of all the region’s theme parks,  Xcaret is the most ambitious, a sprawling, tropical park on a beautiful oceanfront property and a great place to get a taste of the Yucatan’s offerings. Spend your day floating in underground rivers, walking through butterfly gardens, snorkeling along reefs, and visiting folk art museums and Maya ruins.

There are live performances too, including a spectacular nightly showstopper integrating Mexican folk dances, regional music and even a Maya ball game. For sure, it’s a packaged experience – there are even all-inclusive meal plans – but it makes for a stellar day trip, especially if you’re short on time.

How to get to Xcaret from Cancún:  Xcaret offers round-trip transportation from any Cancún hotel; it’s convenient, but you’re at the mercy of the shuttle schedule. There’s also  ADO bus service several times daily from downtown Cancún. If you have a car rental, there’s free parking. Alternatively, taxi stands make cabbing it easy in either direction.

A row of terraced colonial-era houses painted in pale pastel yellows and oranges

5. Take in the colonial vibe of Valladolid

Travel time: 2 hours

Valladolid is a charming town just inland from Cancún. The central plaza is the heart of the action, a leafy affair surrounded by historic buildings and buzzing with locals. Late afternoons bring regional dance performances plus cart vendors selling elote (corn on the cob) and paletas (popsicles).

Consider visiting one of the town’s museums, including  MUREM or  Casa de los Venados with their respective (and impressive) collections of traditional dress and Mexican folk art. Or stroll down Calzada de los Frailes, a cobblestone street lined with artisanal boutiques and cozy cafes.

End with a tour of  Templo de San Bernardino , an imposing Franciscan church and convent that doubled as a fortress during the Caste War. If you have flexibility, stay overnight to soak in the town’s atmosphere, making time for a dip in one of the local cenotes.

How to get to Valladolid from Cancún:  ADO provides bus services from downtown Cancún to Valladolid several times per day. If you have a car, it’s a straight shot on Hwy 180 (libre) or Hwy 180D, the toll road (cuota) .

Maya ruin of the Temple of Kukulcan at Chichén Itzá, Mexico, a stone pyramid with a square top

6. Wander through the Maya world of Chichén Itzá

Travel time: 2 hours 30 minutes

West of Cancún sits one of the world’s most celebrated archaeological zones –  Chichén Itzá , an iconic Maya ruin with magnificent palaces, pyramids and ball courts. The most recognizable is  El Castillo , a towering 25m-high (82ft) structure positioned to create the shadow of a serpent moving down its staircase at the  spring and fall equinoxes .

The ruins, however, are a must-see year-round – the sprawling site revealing the complexities of ancient Maya life. Arrive early to avoid the midday heat and crush of tourists; consider hiring an onsite guide to gain a deeper understanding of the place and the people who built it. Afterward, cool off at the nearby Cenote Ik Kil or grab a bite in the tiny town of Pisté at  Restaurante Las Mestizas , with a tasty Yucatecan menu.

How to get to Chichén Itzá from Cancún:  First-class buses travel from downtown Cancún to the ruins. If you rent a car, take the well-maintained toll road (Hwy 180D) for the fastest trip; or to see villages along the way, take the libre (Hwy 180). A rail service on the Maya Train is in the works too.

14 Amazing Cancun Day Trips (2023)

This post may contain compensated links. Find more info in our disclosure policy

Chichen Itza Sunrise Cancun Day Trip

Within easy reach of idyllic islands, beautiful cenotes and ancient Mayan ruins, there are some incredible Cancun day trip options. Cancun is the arrival point for the majority of visitors to the Yucatan Peninsula and its sprawling resorts are a great base from which to explore the sights of the Yucatan.  Having used Cancun as a base during our many Mexico adventures, we’ve put together this list of the best 14 day trips from Cancun.

Tulum Cancun Day Trip

Cancun Day Trips: How to get around

It is relatively easy to plan a day trip from Cancun and transport options include renting a car, using the ADO bus system, riding one of the small local buses known as Colectivo that run across the Yucatan or by joining a tour.

We rented a car when we arrived in Cancun airport and used our rental to travel around the Yucatan. A rental car allows easy access to the sights, allows us to follow our own schedule and often works out less expensive than organised tours

Cancun Day Trip tip: Renting a car is the easiest and one of the cheapest ways to travel around and we highly recommend a rental car for day trips. There is one small thing to be aware of with Mexican rentals – TPL/PLI is a mandatory insurance required by all drivers in Mexico. You can either rent the car with TPI/PLI included in the quote or or budget in around US $20 a day to allow for it. It is not typically covered in the rental insurance included with some credit cards.

We book our rentals with  RentalCars.com , as they usually have the best rental car price.

14 Unmissable Cancun Day Trips You’ll Love!

Psst! Some links in my posts may be affiliate links, which means that I get paid a fee if you chose to purchase something through it. This doesn't cost you anything, but makes a huge difference for me! Thanks for your support!

Cancun is many travelers’ first stop in Mexico for a bunch of reasons. Firstly, it is within reach of several of Mexico’s must-see destinations and sights, and many of these are available as day trips from Cancun . Places such as Tulum, Chichen Itza and Isla Mujeres are only a few of the day tours and excursions you can embark on from Cancun, and in this post I cover some of the best Cancun day trips.

Don’t miss these on your next visit!

Additionally, Cancun offers convenient flights to most destinations in the US (and many in Europe), as well as warm weather, amazing beaches and great hotels. What’s not to love?

Table of Contents

Quick Cancun Travel Guide

Where to stay : The Cancun Hotel Zone is where you will find most all-inclusive (and well-known) hotels in the city. My favourite resort is the Grand Fiesta Coral Beach , and you can check out my full review here . Other recommended hotels in the Hotel Zone are Secrets The Vine (adult-exclusive) and the Riu Palace .

Where to eat : There are several restaurants along the Hotel Zone, and most resorts have several restaurants. Don’t miss La fonda del Zancudo or La Habichuela .

Top activities and tours in Cancun :

  • Day trip to Chichen Itza ($69)
  • Day trip to Tulum and two cenotes ($39)
  • Catamaran sailing trip and visit to Isla Mujeres ($139) – read my review of this here!
  • ATV and Zipline adventure ($75)
  • Pirate show and dinner ($120)

Packing for Cancun : Cancun is hot-hot-hot, so you obviously want to pack your swimwear, flip flops and light summer dresses year-round. Most resorts have a casual dress code, but require closed shoes and somewhat nicer outfits for dinner. So pack a few nice dinner dresses as well. Don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen and sunglasses, and have a look at my all-inclusive packing list before you go!

Airport transfers : When you arrive at Cancun international airport it can be a little overwhelming, as there are countless transportation companies and taxies trying to get your attention (by literally shouting). I always save myself the trouble by booking a transfer in advance. This is the highest-rated transfer service on Viator.

14 Day Trips from Cancun not to miss

Below I have outlined the best Cancun day trips, in my opinion. Most people won’t have the time to do them all, so I recommend reading through the list and deciding which is more important for you.

On my first visit to Cancun, for example, I prioritised Chichen Itza, Akumal (to swim with turtles !) and Tulum. On later visits I was able to add Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and even Bacalar to the list!

Note that Bacalar isn’t on the list, as it is a 6-hour bus ride from Cancun. However, if you have a night to spend (or two), I highly recommend visiting Bacalar and its stunning lagoon!

Below you will find a map of each of the spots outlined below, to give you an impression of where they are located compared to Cancun.

Tip : you can also save the map through this link – I’ve made it public!

A screenshot of Google Maps showing a section of Mexico surrounding Cancun, with day trip destinations pinned.

Some of the recommendations below are day tours you can do on your own, either by renting a car or traveling by bus (the Riviera Maya has an extensive bus system with comfortable, air-conditioned buses).

Other destinations (most of them, actually) have tours you can join, if you want a hassle-free day trip. These usually pick up right outside your hotel in the Cancun Hotel Zone, and are very convenient if you don’t want to worry about bus schedules or timings yourself.

Read more : what is the Cancun Hotel Zone?

For each listing below I have indicated how to get there, whether it’s by tour or on your own (or both).

#1 Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is probably the most famous excursion you can do from Cancun, and with good reason.

When I first visited Chichen Itza, it was on an excursion from Cancun and the Riviera Maya , and we ended up joining a tour that also stopped at several cenotes along the way.

It was a long day, but worth it to see one of the seven wonders of the world!

The Chichen Itza is an ancient Mayan city, dating back to the year 525. It is said to be one of the most important city of the Mayan civilization, along with the Palenque ruins (that I also recommend).

The video below dives into a little more detail, and shows some up close footage of the Temple of Kukulcan – perhaps the most famous building in Chichen Itza.

day tours in cancun mexico

Day Trips from Cancun to Chichen Itza (plus a few tips!)

There are many day trips from Cancun to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chichen Itza, and you’ll find that even if you don’t book it in advance, there are plenty to choose from.

The drive itself is only 2,5-3 hours, so getting from Cancun to Chichen Itza won’t take up your entire day. However, it you join a tour that also stops at cenotes and local villages can easily make this a full day trip.

Tours start at around $39 per person, and vary a little from company to company. Of course, it also depends on the length and how extensive the tour is.

Another option is to opt for a private tour, which might be most convenient if you are visiting Cancun and Mexico as a family.

These day trips are intense, and will take up your entire day – so make sure to bring water, sunscreen, a hat or a portable fan (like this one ) to protect you from the heat.

Tip : on the way back from Chichen Itza on our tour, I ended up getting so cold due to the A/C in the bus. So I highly recommend you also bring a cardigan or sweater to avoid shivering like I did.

Below is a selection of day trips from Cancun to Chichen Itza:

  • Full Day Trip to Chichen Itza, including stop at Valladolid and Cenote Saamal – $59
  • Full Day Trip to chichen Itza, including stop at Valladolid, Cenote Chichikan, and a tequila tasting – $39
  • Full Day Trip to Chichen Itza, with early access to the site, and stopping at the Yaxuna Ruins and the Cenote Saamal on the way back – $53
  • Private Day Trip to Chichen Itza, with stops at a cenote of your choice (Il Kil, Selva Maya or Xcajum) – $360

Note that the Chichen Itza entrance fee of around $35 (613 Mexican Pesos at the time of writing) is not included in these tours.

So, make sure to read the fine print so you are aware of this before you go (when booking through Viator or GetYourGuide, this will be clearly stated on the tour information).

#2 Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is an island located just off of the Cancun Hotel Zone (we could actually see it from our hotel in Cancun !).

The name Isla Mujeres actually means “the island of women”, something I thought was really cool.

The island is the perfect day trip for those who want a little more laid-back and chill experience. The colorful buildings in the town center will make you want to stroll around all day, and the beautiful beaches and clear waters will make you want to stay forever.

How to get there

You can get to Isla Mujeres on an excursion or by ferry from Cancun. The ferry departs every half hour, and the crossing only takes 15-20 minutes.

The Ultramar ferry dock can be found in Puerto Juarez , right by the Cancun city center. They also have ferries departing from Playa Tortugas in the hotel zone – this ferry leaves once an hour.

If you are leaving from the Hotel Zone, note that the ferry stops running a little earlier than the downtown Cancun ferry. So make sure to check the schedule before you go, so you don’t miss the last ferry returning from the island.

a photo taken on Isla Mujeres, outside Cancun. It shows a fountain with statues of soldiers, in the middle of an empty roundabout.

#3 Catamaran Boat Cruise / Day Cruise

Now, I mentioned above that there are tours and excursions that will take you to Isla Mujeres to spend the day.

However, there are also plenty of day cruises you can take if you just want to spend the day on a boat!

Personally, I love being on a boat (and in the ocean), and I usually jump at the chance to relax on a catamaran or a sail boat for a day.

Luckily, there are plenty of tours from Cancun that take you out on a boat to go snorkelling, enjoy lunch, and relax in the sun all day.

I’ve listed a few of them below, so you can get a chance to jump in the crystal clear waters outside Cancun as well!

bare legs on top of a pink towel in the sun

I have gone out on a boat tour from Cancun (and Playa del Carmen, which I’ve covered below) several times – and it is always a great time.

Usually, you are picked up in the morning from your hotel, and taken straight out to sea. Then, there is snorkeling and swimming, and of course lunch and (usually) an open bar involved.

The perfect recipe for a great day, in other words!

You can head this way to read my most recent review of one of these Cancun day trips, or browse below to see if you find any that catch your eye.

Luxury side note : one option is to rent a private yacht for the day, for you and your friends and family. Prices start at $580 per group (you can be up to 15 people, so it works out to a lot less if you split it). You can book it for 2, 4 or 6 hours here !

Akumal was one of my favourite experiences on my first visit to Cancun.

This small town (and popular beach) is located along the coast south of Cancun, and is just a 1 hour and 20 minute drive.

The reason you might want to visit Akumal is because of its unique beach in Akumal Bay. This is one of few places I know of where you can swim with wild sea turtles!

Of course, there are several things you need to be aware of before embarking on a trip to swim in Akumal, so please read my full guide to Akumal before you go.

Read my extensive guide to swimming with the turtles in Akumal here!

a turtle underwater in akumal turtles akumal snorkeling

There are several ways to get to Akumal from Cancun.

The easiest is to join a tour that includes swimming on the beach (and with the turtles). This tour is $99 and includes getting picked up in Cancun and swimming with the turtles.

Alternatively, you can travel using the local buses (called a Colectivo). These are small, white vans that are very affordable, leaving regularly from Cancun and taking you down the coast.

Next on the list is to use one of the several shuttle companies to travel to Akumal. These can be booked in advance, and will often pick you up at your hotel, such as this one .

Finally, you can jump in a taxi (which can work out quite cheap if there are several of you) or rent a car to make the drive yourself.

Tulum is located a little further south along the coast, past Akumal.

The total drive time from Cancun to Tulum is 1,5-2 hours, and this charming, laidback town can easily be visited on a day trip.

In addition to being a very walkable, chill place, with lots of cute cafes and restaurants, Tulum also has some cultural and historical significance making it worth visiting for a day.

The ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum are mostly known for their location, right on the cliffside overlooking the ocean. From its location, we have learned that the city of Tulum would have been an important sea port for the Mayans.

It is believed that the site, estimated to have up to 1600 inhabitants at one point, was inhabited as early as the 6th century.

So, a day trip from Cancun to Tulum should definitely be on your list, especially if you are a history buff!

Tip : if you want to be extra efficient, there are plenty of tours that allow you to visit both the Tulum ruins and Akumal (to swim with the turtles) in the same day – such as this one !

Cozumel is a paradise island off the coast of the Riviera Maya, and a popular day trip from Cancun.

The ferry company Ultramar (the same one that takes you to Isla Mujeres) will take you from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel in just a 45-minute ferry ride.

With their island hopper package you can book a ground transfer from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and back – leaving right from the Playa Tortugas in the Hotel Zone.

Cozumel is the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean, so there are plenty of things to do there. If you go there for a day, here are a few things to consider:

  • Snorkel in the waters surrounding the island
  • Scuba diving (I was dying to go diving in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef during my visit)
  • Rent a bike and cycle around the island
  • Go explore the Jade Cavern Cenote – a crystal clear cenote on the island
  • Visit the Punta Sur Eco Park
  • Get a day pass to chill at a beach club

the cozumel and isla mujeres ferry dock in the cancun hotel zone - perfect for day trips from cancun

#7 Isla Holbox

I have heard such great things about Isla Holbox from my friend Emily, who is obsessed with the island (and has written a complete guide to it here ).

This island paradise has plenty to offer, and if you have the time, I definitely recommend spending more than just a day here. However, if that is all you have, it is still possible to visit Isla Holbox on a day trip (or tour) from Cancun.

Some of the best things to do in Isla Holbox include the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, swimming with whale sharks (from June to September) and going kayaking in the mangroves .

In addition to swimming on the beaches, snorkeling, eating amazing Mexican tacos and relaxing in the sun, of course.

Those wanting to explore Isla Holbox should plan for a very early start , and consider a private transfer to the ferry dock. To reach the island, you get a ferry from the Chiquila ferry dock on the north-side of the coast.

Cuiquila is a 2,5-3,5 hour bus ride from Cancun, and can be booked in advance on the ADO website (ADO is one of the main bus companies in Mexico).

You can also consider a full-day tour from Cancun to Isla Holbox such as this one . It includes all transfers, a packed lunch, a guide and visits to some of the most popular spots on the island.

#8 Cenote Il Kil

Il Kil is a beautiful Cenote, and one you have probably seen pictures of in the past (perhaps without quite knowing the name).

Cenote Il Kil is located on the way to Chichen Itza from Cancun, and is often included as a stop on the way there. It is recognisable by the hanging vines reaching down to this almost-underground Cenote.

It is actually located just 10 minutes from Chichen Itza, so I highly recommend including a stop here on your day trip.

As you can see below, most Cancun day tours that include Cenote Il Kil will take you to Chichen Itza, so these two are perfectly paired together.

#9 Xel-Ha Park

Let me say two things to get you pumped for Xel-Ha: unlimited margaritas and snorkelling .

What more can you ask for?

Xel-ha (which I have covered more extensively here ) is a natural water park, where you can play around in the beautiful waters along the coast of Mexico.

Similar to Xcaret and Xplor (I believe they may be run by the same company, but don’t quote me on that), this is a place where you can run around, jump in the water, snorkel and relax on the beaches all day once you’ve paid your admission fee.

Included in the entry ticket is unlimited snorkelling gear, buffet lunch throughout the day, and unlimited drinks. So it is basically an all-inclusive water park, and I am here for it!

Xel-Ha can be reached from Cancun in just a 1,5-hour drive, either by Colectivo or ADO (smaller, local buses or big, long-distance buses).

However, your best option from Cancun is to book an official tour like this one , that will take you from your hotel to Xel-Ha, including entrance.

Xel-Ha Park is one of the top attractions in the Riviera Maya

Coba is an ancient Mayan site that you may not have heard of. It is less famous than the likes of Chichen Itza, Tulum and Palenque, but is still worth a visit if you are looking for a great Cancun day trip!

This means the site is less crowded, so this is the ideal excursion for those who want a little more space to explore.

Coba is still not fully excavated, and is located in the jungle with four natural lakes surrounding it. You’ll feel like you’re in Indiana Jones due to the vines and growth that still cover many of the ruins, and it makes the visit feel very wild.

If you want to join a tour from Cancun, there are several full-day trips to Coba , that also include a visit to the Tulum ruins.

Alternatively, if you want to drive yourself, you can make the 2,5-hour drive to the Coba ruins, and then download this self-guided walking tour of the ruins (it is much cheaper than a day trip – so this is the best option for those on a budget).

#11 Isla Contoy

If you would like a truly exclusive excursion from Cancun, consider visiting the beautiful Isla Contoy.

It is a tiny island, just a little over 5 miles long. The trip to Isla Contoy from Cancun takes around 1-2 hours by boat.

Isla Contoy actually has a limit of 200 visitors allowed per day , so there are few tour spaces available, and only a few tour companies are allowed to take tourists to the island.

The island is protected, and can only be reached by boat – there are no ferries or scheduled boats, so joining a tour is the only way to visit this paradise.

The island is completely uninhabited, and has been a Marine National Park since 1998.

Day trips usually include snorkelling in the beautiful waters around the island, and getting a tour of the island – seeing some of the wildlife that inhabit Isla Contoy.

It is actually one of the most important bird sanctuaries on the coast, so bird watchers will love this small island.

Below you will see a selection of tours from companies that are allowed to bring people to the island. Please make sure to book this well in advance – because of the 200 visitor limit.

#12 Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a charming coastal city, just a 45-minute to an hour’s drive south of Cancun.

Many people opt to stay here for a few nights, as it is less crowded and busy compared to Cancun. The vibe is more relaxed, and there is less of a “party factor”.

Yet you still get sandy white beaches, luxurious resorts and are within easy reach of many of the day tour destinations mentioned on this list.

If you want to visit Playa del Carmen on a day trip from Cancun, whether you want to spend the day on the beach there, explore some of the shops in the city, or dine in one of the many restaurants on their main street 5th Avenue , there are several ways to get there:

  • Take a local Colectivo. They stop in front of the ADO station in Cancun.
  • Speaking of ADO, these large, air-conditioned coaches are another way to get to Playa del Carmen. Tickets can be booked in advance here .
  • If you have a rental car, you can drive yourself. As mentioned, it is a 45-60-minute drive along the coast.
  • Take a taxi. A taxi from Cancun to Playa del Carmen will cost around $70.
  • And last, but not least: book a private transfer .

a colorful street with tiled floor and flags in many different colors hanging above as decoration.

#13 Ek’ Balam Archeological Site

Just 32 miles northeast of Chichen Itza you will find the Ek Balam Acheological Site, another set of Mayan ruins worth visiting.

Ek’ Balam is believed to have had its golden age from 770 to 840 AD, and is a very well-preserved ancient city from the Mayan era.

In fact, it is most famous for how the plaster on a tomb is preserved – specifically the tomb of Ukit Kan Lek Tok’, who was a king buried in the largest pyramid.

Another thing I found incredibly fascinating about Ek’ Balam was the theories on why it was seemingly abandoned in a haste.

The reason for this theory is that one (and seemingly the final) of the defensive walls around the city was very poorly constructed, and not very wide – and has been described as a “ last ditch effort at protection “. Perhaps from an invading army or enemy of some sorts.

Due to its proximity, some tours (such as this one ) include a visit to Ek Balam on the way to or from Cancun. Others will take you straight to Ek’ Balam, and include a refreshing swim in a cenote on the way back (such as this tour ).

#14 Valladolid

Another destination that is often included on a tour to the archeological sites of Chichen Itza and Ek Balam is Valladolid.

This Pueblo Magico is a charming city, founded during colonial times (and considered one of the best Pueblo Magicos in Mexico ). Today, it is the second largest city in the state of Yucatan.

The city is vibrant and authentic, and whilst you might visit it on the way to (or from) Chichen Itza, you should consider a day trip here just to take in some of the untouched, non-touristy magic this town has to offer.

Making a day trip to Valladolid from Cancun is a must for those that want to travel a little off the beaten path, experience a different side of Mexico, and eat some authentic local food.

Cancun Day Trips FAQ

Yes, Tulum can be a day trip from Cancun! The total drive time is 1,5-2 hours.

Yes. You can easily visit Isla Mujeres from Cancun by ferry, leaving from both the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun. Isla Mujeres is a charming, small island with beautiful waters, shopping and restaurants.

The most popular day trips from Cancun are Chichen Itza, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. But there are so many great ones!

The best day trip to avoid crowds is to Isla Contoy, because the island has a 200 visitor per day limit.

Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and Isla Contoy.

Technically, yes, as there are daily flights and the flight time is only 1 hour and 10 minutes. However, with the time it takes to get to the airport and through customs, it wouldn’t give you many hours in Cuba.

Below you will find a selection of other trips you can take from Cancun during your trip to Mexico. There are so many different tours to choose from, whether you want to spend your day on a boat, explore Mayan history, or dive into local culture and cuisine.

What travelers are saying.

  • Ping Y 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent This was one of the best tours I have experienced. We were assigned to the Moto Moto group, and our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. He adds humour to his remarks and is all in all good company. Our bus was spacious with large windows for capturing our surroundings, and its driver Eduardo was a polite man. My family and I were educated on many cultural aspects of the Mayans, such as their beliefs and gods. However, the prices of the souvenirs at the stalls near the ruins are quite expensive, though fairly reasonable for its material, namely obsidian and opal. The craftsmanship is quite intricate as well. In conclusion, I believe this trip to be very insightful and interesting. We felt very safe throughout and they all did a great job. The only mid callout I would have is that an extra 30 minutes in chichen itza and the cenote would have been nice. • Trey E 2 contributions 0 4.0 of 5 bubbles Long, but fun experience! The ruins in Tulum and Coba were absolutely beautiful, and the cenote was so much fun! Marco was an amazing tour guide for us. Only thing of note is the tour is 14-15 hours long. We spent 45 minutes in Playa Del Carmen and it felt unnecessary for the extra driving time. But all in all a good trip! Explore the Cancun Area

day tours in cancun mexico

Cancun has great hotels and fabulous nightlife, not to mention its stunning beaches , but it's just the gateway to getting to know the Mayan world. There are water parks, nature reserves and archaeological sites that you really shouldn't miss out on. Even if your main interest is relaxing and taking it easy, you should still check out some of these Cancun day trips during your stay.

Chichen Itza

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Named one of the New World Wonders, this pre-Hispanic city was the political, religious and military center of the Yucatan Peninsula for centuries. Admire the amazing Mayan art and architecture of this ancient city. Hire a guide to appreciate the archaeological site fully. Chichen Itza is 125 miles from Cancun, a two to three-hour drive, about halfway between Cancun and Mérida . If you go on your own, get an early start to arrive before the tour groups to enjoy the site with fewer crowds.

Tulum was once a busy Mayan ceremonial center and trading port. The ruins are in a spectacular setting, on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. The Tulum archaeological site is small, consisting of some 60 buildings and can be toured in about two hours. Tulum's beach is arguably the most beautiful in Mexico. Tulum is located 72 miles south of Cancun. A visit to Tulum can be combined with a visit to Xel-Ha (see next item on the list) to make an all-day excursion.

Xel-Ha is a water theme park where interconnected freshwater lagoons combine with salt water streams, producing a unique ecosystem with multitudes of tropical fish. This is a great spot for kids and beginners to practice snorkeling. Other activities include floating along the river on inner tubes, swinging over cenotes and swimming with dolphins. If you get tired of being in the water you can go on an ecological walking tour through the surrounding jungle. Xel-Ha is 68 miles south of Cancun.

Playa del Carmen

Once a sleepy fishing village, Playa del Carmen has grown into a cosmopolitan town, now the largest in the Mayan Riviera. If you're interested in shopping, nightlife, and fine dining, this is the place, but the beach is also alluring. Go for the day, or even better, for the evening, to stroll along Quinta Avenida and enjoy perusing the shops and people watching. Playa del Carmen is located about 35 miles south of Cancun.

This is a unique ecological theme park with water activities, an archaeological site, a re-created Mayan village and jungle trails. A full day can be spent in Xcaret! You can swim in underground rivers, go snorkeling, see a re-enactment of the Prehispanic ball game, visit ancient Mayan ruins and top off the day by watching the spectacular cultural show that is presented every evening. Xcaret is a little less than an hour south of Cancun, about 40 miles.

Sian Ka'an Ecological Reserve

TripSavvy / Jamie Ditaranto

One of the largest protected areas in Mexico, Sian Ka'an has approximately 1.3 million acres of unspoiled natural beauty with unexcavated Mayan ruins, freshwater canals, mangroves, lagoons, and inlets. Visitors can learn about its diverse wildlife and participate in conservation projects. Ecological tours of the reserve are offered, as well as kayak tours and fly fishing. The Sian Ka'an ecological reserve begins just south of Tulum.

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a 5-mile long island with a tranquil atmosphere. It's a great place to lounge by the water or enjoy a meal at one of the oceanfront restaurants. There are plenty of options for snorkeling, or you can rent a golf cart or a scooter to explore the island. Attractions include the Turtle Farm, Garrafon Park, and Isla Contoy, located nearby. You can get to Isla Mujeres by ferry from the Cancun hotel zone in about 20 minutes.

The largest island in the Mexican Caribbean is a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen. It's one of the best spots for scuba diving and snorkeling, the clear water offering visibility of up to 200 feet. The center of the island is mostly undeveloped jungle and lagoons with many endemic species of small animals and birds. Chankanaab National Park has a botanical garden featuring tropical plants, and Chankanaab Lagoon, a natural aquarium with more than 60 species of tropical fish, crustaceans, and corals.

This fishing village is a good spot to practice windsurfing and snorkeling and is a popular spot to swim with sea turtles. You can hire boats for sport fishing, or a diving instructor to take you to visit the closest reefs. At the Ecological Center, you can hire a guide to take you on a walk into the jungle to learn about the local flora and fauna. There are rustic restaurants with great seafood along the beach. Akumal is located 62 miles south of Cancun.

This is one of the largest Mayan archaeological sites, though only a few of its estimated 6,500 structures have been excavated. Cobá was the hub of a complex network of causeways and was probably an important trade link between Mayan outposts on the coast and cities in the interior. The Nohuch Mul Pyramid , the tallest in the area, has 120 steps - if you don't suffer from vertigo you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the jungle from the top. Cobá is 95 miles from Cancun.

17 Best Day Trips from Cancun, Mexico – Day Tours You Must Do!

Abigail Lewis

If you are looking for the best day trips from Cancun, you’re in the right place.

I am assuming you do not have endless amounts of time in Cancun and would like to travel with a structured itinerary (life is unfair, I know).

So here I have shortlisted 17 of the best day trips from Cancun, Mexico that you can consider embarking on with family and friends alike.

Whether you’re staying at one of Cancun’s all-inclusive family resorts or a boutique hotel, these activities are all easily accessible.

Let’s go!

1. Rio Secreto

Rio Secreto

If you’ll be in Cancun, and are looking for day tours, a trip to the natural Cenotes in the area is a must.

Cenotes are sinkholes that appear when limestone gives way, revealing groundwater beneath.

The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is one of the most famous cenote transformations in the world.

Rio Secreto is one of the best ways to experience the cenotes.

This will be a three-hour trip where you can swim among the caves and under low-hanging ceilings.

The trip will take you out to this cave system which boasts of 12 km of underground rivers.

You do not require a dive certification, some professionals will guide you the whole time.

Just bring your bathing suit and sense of adventure and you’ll be ready to go!

There are moments you may be swimming in complete darkness and quiet.

This is one of the most unique experiences Cancun offers and not one you should miss.

If you tend to feel claustrophobic, however, I would suggest you read up a little more about the cenotes before visiting.

Click here to learn more about experiencing a guided Rio Secreto Cave tour

Xcaret

Xcaret is an archaeological site in Cancun dating back to the Mayan civilization.

The site today has been converted into an interactive park that tourists can visit and learn more about Mayan and Mexican culture.

This is one of the most famous places in Cancun and is certainly worth a trip, especially if you are traveling with children.

If you are around in the evening, there is also a cultural event planned during dinner.

You can enjoy some traditional Mexican delicacies while enjoying a show about the history and culture of the country you are visiting.

When the singing begins, you may recognize a lot of the tunes as classics that have been translated into English.

The experience is not too extravagant and costs approximately 1,842 pesos (97.26 USD).

The Xcaret experience is one you do not want to miss, even if you cannot make it to the dinner.

The park and the activities it offers in itself make for great day excursions.

Click here to learn more about taking a round trip tour to Xcaret

3. Xel-Há

Xel Há

Xel-Há is another park associated with Xcaret.

This is an aquatic theme park that has come up around a lagoon.

I would not make the mistake of thinking this is just an amusement park because Xel-Há has so much more going on.

Since it is built around a natural inlet, it is in the lap of wildlife and will allow you and your family to experience interactions with nature more intimately.

There is also a natural aquarium in which you can swim around with fish of hundreds of different species.

This is one of the most fun places to visit in Cancun with kids or family.

Xel-Há is not in Cancun but is near Tulum, which is just about an hour and a half’s drive from Cancun.

This is one of the ideal day trips around Cancun.

Click here to know more about getting an all-inclusive day pass at Xel-Ha Park

4. Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza

If you are a history buff, I would highly recommend making a trip to Chichen Itza.

This is one of the largest Mayan ruins in the area and inspires awe in whoever manages to visit it.

There was a time you could climb up to the main sanctum but that passage has been shut for tourists for some time now.

Fret not, however, this is still an experience that is worth a million bucks (don’t worry, it costs only 232 pesos).

A lot of work has gone into maintaining these ruins and several years of excavation work has been conducted here.

If you are making a list of sightseeing trips in and around Cancun, put this site somewhere right on top.

Click here to learn more about a guided tour to Chichen Itza

5. Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy

If you are a water baby like I am, head out to Isla Contoy for some of the best snorkeling experiences Mexico can offer.

You can get to Isla Contoy within an hour if you rent a speedboat.

The Isla Contoy is situated in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which is the second largest of its kind in the world!

The island is not very large and there isn’t much to do here if you are not exploring the waters or enjoying some of the seafood delicacies.

The island is fast becoming popular as one of the must-visit destinations in Cancun, so it may be advisable to book ahead to avoid crowds.

It would be a terrible regret if you make a trip to Cancun but are not able to snorkel in Isla Contoy or at least spend the day there.

This is one of my strongest recommendations for what not to miss in Cancun.

Click here to learn more about taking a day tour to Isla Contoy

6. Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres

Not too different from Isla Contoy, Isla Mujeres is also one of the most stunning places to see in Cancun.

The island is in the Yucatan Peninsula and is not far from the cenotes mentioned earlier.

The island is also home to a few Mayan ruins and makes for a great way to spend the day with the family, either snorkeling in the water or hiking through the island to explore the natural flora and fauna and the Mayan ruins.

Depending on the time of year you choose to go, you can also swim with some sea turtles (summer is usually the best time to visit).

You can also pay a visit to Tortugranja, an aquarium, and conservatory that promotes and protects local species of sea turtles.

At the aquarium, you can take back interesting knowledge about the stages in a sea turtle’s life and the egg-laying cycles they follow.

Click here to learn more about taking a day trip via Catamaran to Isla Mujeres

7. Xplor Park

Xplor Park

Xplor Park is one of the best places to visit if you are traveling with kids.

If I was a child, I would have an absolute field day here.

This is a playground practically in the heart of the forest, perched inside the Riviera Maya.

There are several activities and adventures you can partake in when you are at Xplor Park.

From zip lining to swimming in natural cave formations, there are plenty of things Xplor Park has to offer.

Most of these adventures are man made, but the park is also located inside a dense forest so there are many sights to see and experience here.

The area also has a cave complex that has calcareous stalagmite formations — a sight to behold!

Click here to know more about getting an all-inclusive tour at Xplor Park

Tulum

Tulum is a town not far from Cancun and makes for a wonderful day trip.

This is a coastal town and is also home to a protected national park and is regarded as an archaeological site for ancient Mayan ruins.

The Tulum waterfalls are an absolute delight and are a great way to spend time with the family.

The town is situated right by the Caribbean Sea and also has a thriving nightlife.

There are several things you can enjoy in Tulum, be it some downtime in the sea, exploring ancient Mayan ruins in the forest or enjoying a drink and a buzzing nightlife in one of the many cafes and bars that line the coast.

I would recommend also hiring a local guide so you can explore the area more thoroughly and absorb all the knowledge.

Click here to learn more about taking a day trip to Tulum

9. Cenote Zacil-ha

Cenote Zacil Ha

If you are already in Tulum, you can also consider making a trip to Cenote Zacil-ha, one of the most famous and striking cenotes in the area.

This is not an expensive trip at all and will cost you as little as 50 pesos.

It is also one of the less known cenotes near Cancun so you can enjoy a whole day with the family without being hassled by hawkers, vendors and other loud groups of tourists.

Again, you do not need to be a certified diver to wade through the underground river formations and can even bring a pair of snorkels to enjoy these natural geographical formations fully.

Click here to know more info on visiting this magical cenote

10. Playa del Carmen

Playa Del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is another great coastal town not far from Cancun and Tulum both.

This city also falls along the Yucatan Peninsula and is situated in the Riviera Maya end of the Caribbean shoreline.

The city is great for exploring natural formations like the coral reefs.

This is also a great place to go snorkeling or simply walk along one of the best beaches in Cancun at sunset.

If you are looking to spend a day in Playa del Carmen, walk along the Quinta Avenida, the boulevard that runs parallel to the beach to explore the various shops, boutiques and restaurants in the area.

There are also cenotes here so you can take a dip in one of those in this area, an experience you will not get anywhere else other than Mexico (so make the most of it).

11. Ek’Balam

Ek’balam

Ek’Balam is one of the largest Mayan archaeological sites in Mexico and perhaps even in the world!

The site is in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula and is believed to have been the center of significant Mayan rituals and ceremonies.

This is one of the most important sites of the Mayan civilization and kudos to Mexico, it has been preserved exceptionally well!

You can observe the stucco sculptures on the site and also the intricately carved hieroglyphic inscriptions on the walls.

Though, as the civilization progressed, Chichen Itza became a more important site of mass worship and Ek’Balam was relegated to the side, it is still preserved well and is one of the most important sites to study the history of the Mayan civilization.

12. Valladolid

Valladolid

One of the best Cancun day trips, Valladolid is a treat to the eyes and the senses.

The city has a proud Spanish heritage which is being strongly preserved and promoted by locals.

Some of the lovely things to see here are the Convent of San Bernardino of Siena which boasts of beautiful colonial architecture from the 16th century.

In the same complex as the convent, there is the San Gervasio Cathedral which is not as old as the convent and has a stunning baroque style of architecture.

If you want to cover more on the same day, you can also club trips to Valladolid with a trip to Ek’Balam.

If you are a sucker for history and culture, Valladolid is certainly a spot near Cancun you should hit up.

Coba

A Mayan city that will keep a piece of your heart is Coba.

This is a stunning city that was once home to a thriving civilization.

Coba is not the most popular spot for tourists so you can really enjoy the city at your own pace, without being hustled around by a large crowd.

I would really recommend renting bicycles and riding through the city to explore it better.

An opportunity you should not miss is to climb on top of the Ixmoja or the central pyramid in the ruins.

Be warned, though, there are 120 steps you need to ascend so you should carry some water with you and take breaks too if you are feeling short of breath!

But the sight from the top of the pyramid is not one to be missed!

Click here to know more about a private tour to Coba

14. Akumal Bay

Akumal Bay

If you are in Mexico, there is no dearth of spots where you can swim with turtles.

Some of the spots have already been mentioned above and Akumal Bay is one that needs to be added to the list.

The bay has a healthy population of sea turtles and is one of the best spots in Mexico to swim with these sweet reptiles.

The Akumal Bay is home to not only flippers but also has a stunning coral reef and cenote formations.

You will be in the lap of nature and all its wonders in Akumal Bay.

The bay is not far from Tulum so you can also pair a trip to the Bay with half a day in Tulum.

Click here to know more about a guided snorkel tour at Akumal Bay

15. Sian Ka’an Biosphere

Sian Ka’an Biosphere

Sian Ka’an Biosphere has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the municipality of Tulum.

This is one of the most carefully preserved biospheres in the region and is home to large tracts of mangroves and massive spreads of tropical forests.

I would suggest calling ahead and making a booking with a tour group so you can take in all the wondrous sights the biosphere has to offer.

The biosphere is quite large so you may be able to cover more in a day if you are exploring it with an experienced guide.

If you are looking to explore the Mayan ruins, you should enter the biosphere from the Muyil side and if you want to explore the natural formations and the ocean lagoons, enter from the Punta Allen side.

You can choose a tour guide or a group accordingly.

Click here for more info on experiencing a discovery tour to Sian Ka’an Biosphere

16. Isla Cozumel

Isla Cozumel

The Isla Cozumel is another in the list of stunning islands around Cancun.

The island is a popular port for holiday cruise ships and several of the famous cruises that go around the island and in the Caribbean Sea start from this island.

Despite the massive footfall it gets, the island has managed to preserve its natural charm and is one of the most beautiful places you can visit in Mexico.

The island is also surrounded by the Mesoamerican Reef so you can also dive and snorkel in the water here for an experience that is life altering.

If you are a slightly more skilled diver and snorkeler, you should swim to the Museo Subacuatico de Arte — a submerged art museum that hosts several stunning sculptures.

Where else in the world do you get to see that?

Click here to know more about exploring the Island of Cozumel

17. Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is a coastal town and seaport in Quintana Roo. Puerto Morelos was once a fishing village though today it is a developed town that has no lack of modern facilities.

Visually, however, the town still sports some of its earlier village charms.

You can also observe sea turtles on the beach and frolicking in the clear waters of the sea.

Make sure not to disturb them or touch the turtles though.

Remember, this is their home and you and I are merely guests.

When you go further inland, there are also several cenotes you can explore.

What travellers are saying.

15 Best Day Trips from Cancun

Cancun has become a Mecca for young party animals in search of a cheap holiday and an epic adventure.

Consisting of two distinct areas El Centro, and Zona Hotelera, the city is awash with vast hotel resorts and tourist orientated bars wherever you turn.

In Zona Hotelera you will find the party people, the beachfront bars and chaotic clubs.

Although Cancun has a lot to offer it is best appreciated when teamed with a day trip or two, to provide you with a rounded view of the wonderful nation of Mexico.

Rich in cultural heritage there are dozens of incredible places to visit with the easy day trips from Cancun.

Xel-Há

The Xel-Há is an amazing natural aquarium park like no other.

This is a truly unique tourist attraction that features a mangrove forest, a cenote, zip lines, waterslides and more.

Both a theme park and an ecotourism and ecological preservation project, Xel-Há is an awesome way to spend a day.

You can snorkel with the tropical fish and follow the iridescent shoals as they flit around the warm waters.

What is great about Xel-Há is that you can do as you please; you can cram in activities from dawn until dusk or you can relax in a hammock and soak up the sun with a swim thrown in for good measure.

2. Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is one of Mexico’s most important historical landmarks and has been named as one of the new seven wonders of the world.

This tremendous stepped pyramid is also known as El Castillo or Temple and Kukulcan.

Chichen Itza is, to this day, considered to be a deeply spiritual and sacred place by the Mayan people.

Throughout the Chichen Itza ruined city you will find dozens of stone carvings that have survived over 2000 years.

Look specifically for the Wall of Skills and the Temple of the Warriors.

When Chichen Itza was abandoned the jungle took over.

It is humbling to see how the jungle has reclaimed the surrounding areas.

3. Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy, Mexico

Isla Contoy sits about a 40-minute speedboat ride from Cancun and is one of Mexico’s best snorkelling spots.

Lying in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef ecosystem in the world.

With so much doom and gloom hitting the headlines about our world disappearing before our eyes Isla Contoy gives you the opportunity to experience the planet’s natural marine beauty at its best.

This tiny island is merely 8.5km in length and is picture perfect beyond belief.

As Cancun grows in popularity so does Isla Contoy so visit as soon as you can to avoid the impending crowds.

4. Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres

Much like Isla Contoy, Isla Mujeres is one of the most beautiful spots along the Yucatan Peninsula.

This is an inhabited island that features a smattering of Mayan ruins and dozens of breathtaking snorkelling spots.

Isla Mujeres is a vacation destination that is becoming more and more popular, especially around Playa Norte.

If you get lucky you could be snorkeling with sea turtles all day long.

For a mixture of exploration and relaxation spend the morning strolling around El Meco and Punta Sur then head to Playa Lancheros or Shark Beach for a sunbathe and snorkel.

5. Xplor Park

Xplor Park

For a super fun, action packed day out then there is no better place to head than Xplor Park.

This jungle playground can be found at the heart of the Riviera Maya and genuinely has something for everyone.

From rafting to zip lining, cave swimming and amphibious vehicle adventures, Xplor Park provides an adrenaline fuelled day out for all.

In addition to the man made attractions Xplor Park sits right on the river banks, is surrounded by lush, dense rainforest and has its own cave complex featuring calcareous stalagmites.

The Xplor Park is one of the most popular day excursions from Cancun so be sure to book in advance, especially in high season.

Tulum, Mexico

Tulum is not only a coastal resort town but is a protected national park and ancient Mayan archaeological site.

Sitting on the ridge of the vegetated cliffs Tulum is a walled Mayan frontier that overlooks the dazzling Caribbean Sea.

Reinvented as a hang out for hippie travellers Tulum offers you the best of both worlds; impeccably preserved cultural heritage and dozens of tourist oriented bars and cafes.

Learn about Mayan culture from a local guide and take time to immerse and reflect in this spiritual site.

Then move on to modern Tulum, hang with locals and travellers, swap stories and even take a stroll along the sun kissed beach.

7. Cenote Zacil-ha

Cenote Zacil-ha

If you like to flick through travel magazines and scour social media for travel inspiration chances are you have seen dozens of photographs of your fellow adventurers swinging from vines into mystical sinkholes, also known as cenotes.

One of the most impressive cenotes near Cancun is Cenote Zacil-ha, close to Tulum.

This is a family friendly attraction that costs just 50 pesos to enter.

There are no stall vendors hassling you nor is it too overcrowded.

You can hire snorkels or bring your own.

You can couple a visit to Cenote Zacil-ha with an afternoon at Gran Cenote to experience more of these geographical wonders.

8. Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Sharing the Yucatán Peninsula with Cancun is the lesser known resort town of Playa del Carmen.

This little gem has just the right amount of tourist facilities and a sublime stretch of beach.

Much of the town is pedestrianised so you can saunter, stroll and snake your way through the streets without a care in the world.

There is a typically Mexican feel to Playa del Carmen, the people are incredibly welcoming and are happy to help you navigate the Spanish language should you be prepared to try.

There are some amazing coral reefs lying off the shores of Playa del Carmen; get snorkelling if you can.

9. Ek’Balam

Ek’Balam

The astounding Mayan archaeological site of Ek’Balam is one of the largest of its kind.

Strategically placed at the centre of the Yucatan Peninsula, in ancient times Ek’Balam was the location of ritual ceremonies and mass worship.

Ek’Balam means Black Jaguar but historians have revealed that the original name of this city was more likely Talol.

Once a beacon for the Mayan people Ek’Balam slowly became dwarfed by Chichen Itza.

Although the focus moved 56 km northeast to Chichen Itza, Ek’Balam was lovingly preserved.

To this day visitors can observe the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the walls of the city and too the stucco sculptures that remain.

10. Valladolid

Valladolid, Mexico

Culture vultures will love Valladolid.

Proudly preserving its Spanish heritage and further cultivating it within modern life Valladolid is a truly special city.

The Convent of San Bernardino of Siena, constructed in the 16th-Century is a wonderful example of colonial architecture.

The convent features an ostentatious wooden altar which is a sight to behold.

The convent complex also houses the San Gervasio Cathedral which is a little younger and built in baroque style.

If you are short on time it is possible to couple a visit to Valladolid with the ancient Mayan site of Ek’Balam.

Cobá, Mexico

You could easily spend a whole vacation exploring one ancient Mayan site after another and never tire.

One Mayan city not to be missed is Coba.

What makes Coba so special is that its well off the beaten tourist trail.

One of the highlights of a visit to Coba is taking a bicycles ride through the scabes.

There are 16 of these ancient roads open to the public although over 50 have been discovered by the archaeologists who have dedicated their lives to studying this area.

You cannot leave Coba without having climbed to the top of ‘Ixmoja’ the central pyramid, although there are only 120 steps you’ll certainly be short of breath by the time you reach the top.

12. Akumal Bay

Akumal Bay

For many people swimming with turtles comes at the very top of their bucket list.

In Mexico you can make your dreams come true.

This is a world class snorkeling spot that is famed for is strong population of sea turtles.

Off the coast of Akumal Bay you’ll find not only your flippered friends but beautiful coral reefs and awe-inspiring sinkholes, caverns and caves.

12 Best Things to Do in Cancun, According to Someone Who Has Visited Mexico 200 Times

Plan the perfect Cancun itinerary.

Going off the beaten path is an exciting way to travel, but sometimes it’s equally great to stick to the classics. And when it comes to Mexico, you can’t get much more classic than Cancun. The original tourist destination in Mexico, Cancun consistently delivers a quintessential tropical experience: soft, white-sand beaches, crystal-clear water, a toes-in-the-sand energy, and fantastic beachfront resorts.

It’s no wonder Cancun is one of the top beach destinations in the world. And yet, for as much as it has been explored, it still retains a secret or two for travelers wanting to venture a bit deeper. Whether you’re looking to bask on the beach, indulge in a spa treatment, or foray into the jungle-shrouded unknown, Cancun has the ingredients to impress even the most seasoned Mexico traveler.

Here's our list of the 12 best things to do in Cancun.

Hit the beach.

The beaches in Cancun are among the best in the world. Nowhere else in the country will you find sand so soft and white, or water that perfect shade of turquoise. With no shortage of all-inclusive resorts in Cancun , staying directly on the beach is easy. That said, all beaches in Mexico are public, so even if you aren’t staying on the sand, you can still explore popular local beaches like Playa Delfines, Playa Chac Mool, or the blissfully quiet stretches of Costa Mujeres.

Have a great meal.

Cancun is a culinary hot spot, with many fantastic hotels and a picture-perfect Caribbean Sea setting. Avenida Kukulkan in the Hotel Zone is lined with fine-dining restaurants, while resorts around the region tout five-star dining experiences.

A personal favorite is Mar-Bella Fish Market Raw Bar & Grill. Tucked behind a grocery store, the seafront restaurant lets you pick your fish before it’s cooked to perfection.

Zachary Rabinor , CEO of Journey Mexico, recommends Puerto Santo, another casual seafood restaurant known for its toes-in-the-sand setting, fresh ceviche, aguachile, and legendary paella.

Indulge in wellness.

Some of the best spas in Mexico are found right in Cancun, featuring everything from therapies rooted in Mayan healing to the latest med spa technology. For an over-the-top experience, try Haven Riviera Cancun . The sprawling MySenses Spa offers a little bit of everything: a hydrotherapy circuit with Roman baths, a temazcal experience, and a dome-topped hammam.

The Waldorf Astoria Cancun has another spectacular spa experience, with eight indoor and 13 outdoor treatment rooms, a relaxation pool, and wet areas that include a sauna, a steam room, and an ice fountain. Tip: Book the 100-minute Melipona Honey Ritual, which includes a honey exfoliation and wrap, a full-body massage, and a honey face mask.

Sail to Isla Mujeres.

One of Rabinor’s top suggestions for things to do in Cancun is take a sailing trip across the Caribbean Sea to Isla Mujeres. This lovely, laid-back island is close enough to be a day trip from Cancun, but far enough removed to feel like a destination all on its own. Playa Norte is one of the best beaches in Mexico , while Playa El Cielo is one of the best spots in Cancun to snorkel with thousands of starfish.

Swim with whale sharks.

While we’re on the subject of water activities, the diving in Cancun is among the best in the world. It's home to a section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and divers can expect a kaleidoscope of coral and fish beneath the water's surface. During the summer months, whale sharks come to the waters around Cancun. Snorkeling or diving with these gentle giants is a humbling experience, and a must for any marine lover.

Walk in Mayan footsteps.

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is rich with Mayan archaeological sites. A short drive from Cancun in any direction will put you at the doorstep of some of the most spectacular Mayan cities in Central America.

One of the most popular day trips from Cancun is out to Chichén Itzá, arguably the most famous archaeological site in Mexico. However, visitors can also explore sites like the ruins of Tulum, Coba, Muyil, and Ek Balam. Each one offers something different, and you may feel like you have several of these preserved cities all to yourself.

Swim in a cenote.

Beneath the pavement and forest floor across the Yucatan are thousands of interconnected underground rivers and caves. This network of subterranean waterways was important to the Mayan culture, as the sinkholes (called cenotes ) were believed to be entrances to the underworld. Today, these portals still exist, and many are open to the public.

You can find dozens of cenotes within a short distance from Cancun, all up and down the Riviera Maya. One of my favorites is Río Secreto, a spectacular underground river and cave system that feels like it sprung straight out of a fantasy novel. Thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, as well as deep, turquoise-colored cave pools, set the scene for a step back in time.

Head downtown.

For years, the heart and soul of Cancun's tourism was focused around the Hotel Zone. But as the city has grown and changed, more and more travelers are venturing inland to the city's thriving downtown .

Avenida Huayacán is one of the main arteries of downtown Cancun. A local hot spot, it's a flourishing scene of trendy restaurants and bars. Downtown Cancun also has a vibrant street art scene, sprawling parks, hole-in-the-wall taquerias, and local markets selling handicrafts and souvenirs.

Explore the nearby small towns.

Cancun may be a major seaside metropolis, but the region surrounding the city is home to some of the best small towns and villages in Mexico . From Spanish-influenced destinations to sleepy fishing villages with lovely boutiques, you'll find lots to explore away from the rattle and hum of the big city.

Valladolid, for example, is a beautiful Spanish-influenced city on the route between Cancun and Chichén Itzá. Visit the 16th-century Convent of San Bernardino of Siena overlooking the Parque Principal Francisco Canton Rosado. Casa de los Venados is a popular museum in Valladolid showcasing folk art and furniture.

South of Cancun, Puerto Morelos is a small beach community with a stretch of white sand and a charming downtown with open-air restaurants, local boutiques, and low-key bars.

Cook in the jungle.

Mexico’s cooking schools are legendary, but one, in particular, has always been cemented in my mind. Mexico Lindo Cooking is more than just a cooking school — it’s a full-day journey that mixes traditional Mexican cooking with a sensory experience. Travelers are taken deep into the jungle, where a small, pink-and-yellow casita explodes from the depths of the green forest. Here, chef Alejandra Kauachi walks her disciples through recipes like cochinita pibil, Veracruz-style ceviche, tacos, tamales, fresh salsas, and handmade tortillas. The entire experience concludes with a beautiful sit-down lunch on the covered terrace.

Kayak in the Nichupte Lagoon.

Most visitors to Cancun are so enamored with the beautiful beaches that they forget to turn around. On the other side of the Hotel Zone is one of the largest mangrove ecosystems in Mexico — the Nichupte Lagoon. Spread over nearly 12 square miles and including seven lakes, the Nichupte Lagoon is one of the best places in Cancun for kayaking, sport fishing, and boating. It's also the best spot to view a gorgeous Mexican Caribbean sunset.

Party on Avenida Kukulkan.

Nightlife in Cancun is legendary, particularly in the Hotel Zone along Avenida Kukulkan. Here's where you'll find nightlife legends, including Coco Bongo, Mandala Beach Club, and The City Nightclub Cancun. Not for the faint of heart, or those with an early bedtime, these pulsing, high-energy dance clubs keep night owls going until the wee hours of the morning.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Shuttle drive time from airport: About 15 minutes

Looking for an all-inclusive Cancún resort where your toddler will easily be entertained – and easily able to take a midday nap when they're tired? Consider a stay at the highly rated Moon Palace Cancun, where toddler-friendly amenities include swimming pools (one with a kids play area), a playground, mini-golf and a game room appropriately named the Playroom.

All-inclusive rates at Moon Palace Cancun cover a wide variety of on-site dining options – such as Italian, Brazilian and Pan-Asian – which can be enjoyed around the clock thanks to 24-hour room service. The food, in particular, earns high praise from recent guests.

Rates also cover nonmotorized water sports, pool and beach access, and entertainment such as pyrotechnic shows – as well as accommodations, which include Superior Family Suites (with two connecting rooms) and Swim Up Suites. If you enjoy golf, be sure to schedule a tee time at the resort's 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course.

Most parents agree this all-inclusive resort is one of the best all-around options for families visiting Cancun. Many travelers also recommend The Grand at Moon Palace , which offers even more restaurants and activities, including a water park.

Shuttle drive time from airport: About 25 minutes

Formerly Panama Jack Resorts Cancun, Wyndham Alltra opened its doors in 2022. The all-inclusive resort maintains the family-friendly amenities of its predecessor, which include swimming pools, around a dozen dining options, family suites and, of course, direct access to the beach in Cancun's Hotel Zone.

Camp Alltra is the highlight for the elementary-aged set, with a pirate ship water play area featuring seven waterslides, a ball pit and hanging bridges. Camp Alltra hosts children ages 4 to 12 during the day and in the evening, so you might just be able to enjoy a massage or facial at the on-site Aura Spa.

Staff also host beach games and arts and crafts activities; nightly entertainment includes mariachi bands and family movies. Recent guests praise the resort, particularly its friendly staff.

Pool at Beach Palace.

Courtesy of Beach Palace

Parents love this resort for its small size – which is great for tweens who want to explore on their own – in addition to the clean beach and staff. Many note that resort employees are quick to learn your family's names and food preferences.

Kids and adults alike enjoy Beach Palace's outdoor pools, water activities like stand-up paddleboarding and Las Vegas-style performances, including musical acts and fire shows. Dining options span six restaurants, three bars and a coffee shop. There's also a spa and plenty of add-on Cancun excursions to attractions such as Chichén Itzá . While the resort has a fantastic kids club, tweens might not be interested as it's designed for children ages 4 to 12.

Book a stay in a Superior Family Deluxe suite, where your tween(s) can feel like grownups with a kids minibar (stocked with chocolate milk and juice), an Xbox 360, a beach bucket kit and a room service menu just for kids. Children and teens often stay and eat free at Beach Palace thanks to recurring promotions, so be sure to check current offers when booking your stay.

Rates include access to the Music Lab, where guests ages 12 and older are welcome to use the recording studio, play different instruments, learn how to be a DJ and even star in their own music video. All meals and drinks – available to enjoy at five on-site restaurants as well as in your room – are also included in rates, along with nightly entertainment and daily activities.

Located in Cancún's Hotel Zone, the Hard Rock features a lagoon-style pool, nonmotorized water sports, and courts for tennis and basketball. Recent visitors appreciate the accommodating staff and the kids programming at this resort, though some caution the adults-only crowd can get rowdy here.

Testing out Tren Maya, Mexico’s new train that connects the Yucatán

The controversial train is up and running, but not without challenges. here’s what it’s like to book and ride..

MÉRIDA, Mexico — It wasn’t until I stepped aboard Mexico’s shiny new train myself that I truly believed the Tren Maya existed. Up until that point, between a confusing booking process and reports of stranded passengers and construction problems, I felt that it was possible the entire project was nothing but a Potemkin train.

If there was any hope it existed, it was from the bad news: the train had already attracted headlines for injuries to workers, rushed construction and damage to the fragile jungle of the Yucatán Peninsula and archaeological sites, despite promises from the Mexican government to avoid any harm.

The new train opened its first section in December 2023 and was scheduled to be fully complete in February, but that’s since been pushed to June. When finished, it will span about 970 miles and link five states in southeastern Mexico in a Q-shaped loop — Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Chiapas and Tabasco. Construction is still underway on tracks covering most of that distance, including a line running about 26 miles south from the Cancún airport to the popular beach town of Playa del Carmen. The inaugural train rolled through that section Thursday.

During my early February visit to the region, only one segment of the total route was in reality complete — a line connecting the busy tourist hub of Cancún to Campeche via the busy midsize city of Mérida. At the time, the train was making just a couple of runs per day, which is a fraction of its promised frequency. It’s ostensibly geared toward visitors, so being a lover of train travel, I eagerly incorporated it into my travel plans. That, it turned out, would be easier said than done.

Here’s what it was like booking and riding the train from Mérida to Valladolid.

day tours in cancun mexico

The booking process

The beauty of taking a train is that booking a ticket and boarding the train is a much simpler process than flying. That’s not the case for the Tren Maya, which is complex.

I first tried booking a ticket from my home in Canada in the weeks before my trip. There is just one official website for booking tickets — the service’s X account warns of scams — but the site is less than user friendly. Tickets only come available one week before and are frequently sold out. (This week, there were no tickets available, for any segment of any route that I checked.)

One week before my arrival in Mexico, I did manage to snag what I thought was a reservation. Alas, it was not to be: Booking a ticket is actually a two-part process, and I had only completed the first part. Once a booking is made, you have to make a payment online within half an hour, but the site’s automatic redirect to the payment page didn’t work, no matter how many times I tried from Canada. I gave up and decided to book while I was in Mexico for a different leg of my trip.

A week later, I was in my hotel in Mérida, determined to make this journey happen. When I found two open seats, I jumped on them, and — voilà! — was redirected to the payment page. The payment went through, and I received a receipt moments later. But, still no tickets. Those would take another nerve-racking 13 hours (did I just get scammed?) to arrive in my email inbox.

The lessons I took away from this experience: Booking within Mexico seems to be the easiest, if not the only, way to complete a reservation. The website does in fact provide tickets eventually, but planning a week ahead helps. So does having a grasp of Spanish; there is no English-language website or support, though you can use the translate function of your browser. I also didn’t see ticket kiosks in the city centers of Cancún, Mérida or Valladolid, where I spent time throughout my trip.

Ticket pricing

Prices for different journey lengths vary based on the cabin choice — tourist or premier — and are higher for international visitors than for Mexican nationals.

When I booked my tickets, a three-and-a-half hour, one-way trip from Mérida to Cancún airport cost about $90 for premier class or just under $60 for tourist class, for an international visitor. Tickets are 25 percent less for a Mexican national. With all the uncertainty and wanting to limit my chances of being stranded, I decided to book a premier ticket on the shortest leg I could — between Mérida and Valladolid — for about $50.

The station and boarding

With my ticket PDF on my phone, I caught a $15 Uber from central Mérida to the brand-new station in Teya, on the city’s outskirts. My Uber driver, Gabriel, mentioned that he was taking the train to visit family in Cancún in July. As I arrived at the station, it appeared that the majority of the users of the train were in fact Mexican families. The lack of international visitors riding has raised concerns, local media has reported.

Construction at the station was still ongoing. Crews were putting the finishing touches on everything from the landscaping to platforms, while the security screening machinery sat next to the boarding area, ready to be plugged in. The station is sparkling and airy, with a few little shops selling snacks, but there is no air conditioning, phone charging stations or WiFi.

With the departure approaching, an announcement in Spanish echoed through the station and we were ushered smoothly and efficiently onto one of the station’s six platforms, the only one that appeared to be operational at that point. There are no elevators in sight, but instead many stairs and escalators. Combined with a wide gap between the platform and the train, it’s safe to say that accessibility is not yet a consideration.

The departure time came and went, with no sign of the train, and I feared the train might not come. But then, 20 minutes later, the security officers fanned out across the platform and fixed their eyes into the distance where the train was winding into view.

The train journey

The train is divided into two classes: tourist and premier, which are distinguished mainly by the amount of elbow room. Premier compartments have three seats to a row, while the tourist compartments have four and more options for seats that can face one another, which is great for small groups. (A third, sleeper class, will eventually operate on the longer journeys.) The cars are immaculate, comfortable and quiet; the train operates so smoothly as to be almost unnoticeable when it moves.

The cars were outfitted with air conditioning and the seats have USB plugs for your devices; and the temperature is kept at a pleasant, cool level. There is WiFi, but it didn’t appear to work at a level sufficient to do much of anything.

After one or two stops, at semi-functioning stations near archaeological sites between Mérida and Valladolid, a cart rolled through the premier cabin with complimentary (but unappetizing) sandwiches. Luckily, other snack and drink options, including alcoholic drinks, were available in the bar car. A full menu of food options is expected to be offered later, but it wasn’t available yet. When I turned down the sandwich, I was instead offered a cup of fresh papaya, watermelon and pineapple, which I gladly accepted.

The atmosphere on the train was bordering on festive: Families took selfies as the train pulled away from its various stops, and those who had just disembarked waved to everyone aboard. The sense was that this train was opening up new possibilities for the region, much of which is served by poorly maintained roads, if there are any at all.

A friendly Pomeranian wandered the central aisle — a reminder that the train allows small dogs — as the train rolled past tiny villages and henequen plantations, and near enough to archaeological sites for quick access — but unfortunately not for a view.

Pulling into the station near the region’s best-known archaeological site and new Wonder of the World , Chichén Itzá, I felt like the kids locked in their Jurassic Park jeep, craning my neck to spot the attraction from the ride. There was no sign of the towering Kukulcan pyramid on the horizon, however, and I had to remind myself it’s not a theme park ride, it’s transit — intended to deliver you to the places where you can experience the region, not to be the experience itself.

The train glided into a station north of Valladolid just behind schedule, as the sun was about to dip below the horizon. A bus waited to whisk us downtown for about $2 a head, completing the short journey.

It was hard in retrospect to reconcile the comfort and confidence of the train experience itself with the labyrinthine process of booking — and the ecological destruction its construction has wrought. Sitting down on the train, I had the sense of having tumbled through the surf, certain I would drown, only to be deposited gently on a pristine shore with a drink in my hand.

If I were returning to the Yucatán Peninsula, I’d avoid incorporating the train into my plans for now. The booking system is too unreliable and support is too sparse for it to be a predictable or pleasant part of a vacation. I also have a nagging feeling that my uneventful, mostly on-time journey was something of an outlier.

But if I were to return sometime after the dust settles over the next few months — and I hope to — I’d gladly hop on another ride. When the booking system bugs and construction chaos are worked out, the Tren Maya feels destined to become a must-do for any traveler, foreign and domestic alike, eager to explore beyond the resorts of Cancún.
