Google reveals android security update that even beats iphone.

The clear differences between Android and iPhone are narrowing quickly—and the latest Google update has just reduced that gap even further...

Android dials app security up to 11 with new quarantine feature

It’s already clear that Android 15 will be a huge step forwards for users on the security and privacy front. The gap between iPhone and Android is closing fast, with little to choose between features and hardware. Apple’s privacy and security credentials have remained one of the last standouts—but Google is catching up.

Just as with the recent revelation that Google will provide Pixel users with warnings when their cellular devices might have been tracked or intercepted—beating iPhone at its own game, we have just seen another security innovation previewed.

In fact, the latest revelation to come from the Android 15 Beta currently doing the rounds, actually beats iPhone with a neat new security feature.

This update is app quarantining. One of the areas where Android still lags iPhone is app defense—malware and device infection. Google provides Play Protect and has shored up its Play Store, but rogue apps still manage to find a way through.

Bitcoin Suddenly Braced For A 35 Trillion Halving Price Earthquake

New google play biometrics warning issued to all android users, apple watch series 9 hits all time low special offer price.

Quarantining is a halfway house between letting a potentially dangerous app run wild on a device and deleting it completely. Instead, Android could quarantine an app—almost like putting it into a sandbox, where it’s contained and unable to access data or functionality that might harm the user, without resorting to deletion.

This doesn’t seem like such a material change. But because deletion is so drastic, Play Protect needs a high bar before it does so automatically. That isn’t the case with quarantining, meaning the system can act more quickly and more often.

And while this will initially be seen as soft deletion, it could evolve into a setting whereby Android can act to block apps with onerous permissions or which seem to be acting out of character. Perhaps, eventually, users could even select a general privacy/risk level and have the system act accordingly.

Android 15 could bring app quarantining

As reported by Android Authority , quarantined apps will have notifications disabled, will be hidden from view and have any ongoing activities stopped; in parallel, other apps won’t be able to access the quarantined app, which is important given that malware often sees apps operating in concert, with one installing another.

As ever, this is a pre-release preview and there’s no guarantee it will make it into the initial release of Android 15—if at all. That said, it’s in keeping with the general security and privacy enhancements from Google that we’re now seeing.

Even though security updates such as this further level the playing field between Android and iPhone, that might all change in the fall when Apple releases iOS 18 and we see exactly what flavors of AI make it into the first full release.

While most of the expected excitement will relate to new AI features and capabilities, there’s a critical security and privacy angle here as well. Apple— it now seems —may stick rigidly to on-device AI, as opposed to even the hybrid model offered by Samsung’s Galaxy AI, which is a mix and match between on-device and cloud.

Google has always erred more on the cloud side of that spectrum, with its AI fairly limited when it cannot engage the company’s vast back-end. The latest news that Google will combine its hardware and software teams—Pixel and Android—into a new, unified structure, is therefore interesting from an AI perspective.

This goes beyond just mobile. As The Verge reports, “the creation of a new team called ‘Platforms and Devices’ will oversee all of Google’s Pixel products, all of Android, Chrome, ChromeOS, Photos, and more.” But from a mobile perspective, this has the potential to enable better alignment between device hardware and software around AI offerings, which is a very Apple-like approach with very Apple-like privacy implications—assuming we do see a push toward on-device processing.

As I’ve said before, the potential privacy backlash that will follow AI’s push onto billions of devices is not yet understood—but this will be the next battlefield, after the progress seen in recent years over app permissions and location/activity tracking.

Samsung is already heavily pushing the benefits of its hybrid approach from a privacy perspective, and this will pressure Google to do more of the same. When Apple joins the fray with iOS 18 later this year, we will assess exactly how far apart Android and iPhone remain, or if all this recent convergence is set to continue...

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: Which flagship phone wins?

Two titans battle it out

  • Price and value
  • Performance
  • Special features and software
  • Battery life and charging

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Prodict Card Render.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max delivers the best performance we've seen from a smartphone, and its bright and colorful display, lightweight titanium design and long battery life also help it stand out. While the upgraded zoom lens is a step forward, the Galaxy S23 Ultra remains the better camera phone. But overall, Apple's premium iPhone is tough to beat.

  • Stronger and lighter titanium design
  • Longer 5x zoom
  • Action button adds flexibility
  • Best-in-class A17 Pro chip
  • Super long battery life
  • Slow charging compared to other phones
  • Action button only does one thing at a time

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The king of camera phones is a great device to buy if you want a super-sized screen, even if the iPhone 15 Pro Max proved brighter in our testing. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powering the Galaxy S23 Ultra delivers solid performance and long battery life on a charge, and Samsung's phone still offers the best close-ups of any mobile device.

  • Powerful 200MP camera
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip beats iPhone on graphics
  • Awesome display
  • Excellent battery life
  • Smart One UI 5.1 upgrades
  • Very expensive
  • Curved screen can get in way
  • No upgrade in charging speed

It's a battle between the two very best phones that money can buy with this iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comparison. I tested both phones side by side for several days to crown a winner, backed up by our in-depth camera shootout and lab testing.

As you'll see in our iPhone 15 Pro Max review , Apple's $1,199 flagship has a lot to offer, including a strong, lighter and more compact titanium design, a smart new Action button and a blazing A17 Pro chip. Plus, there's several camera upgrades on board along with (finally) USB-C charging.

On the other hand, our Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra review shows why it has been our best camera phone champ and is the best Android phone overall. It offers a whopping 200MP camera, dual telephoto zoom lenses, a great display and — if you want one — a built-in S Pen.

So which is the best phone overall? This iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Galaxy S23 face-off will crown a winner and help you pick the best flagship for your money.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Specs

Iphone 15 pro max vs galaxy s23 ultra: price and value.

Both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra are among the most expensive phones available. Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max has a starting price of $1,199 for 256GB of storage. If you want more, you can spring for 512GB for $1,399 and 1TB for $1,599.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra arrived in February with a starting price of $1,199 for 256GB of storage. You can upgrade to 512GB for $1,379 or 1TB of storage for $1,619.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Design

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro Max starts with a distinct advantage with its new titanium design. This replaces the stainless steel band on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and it's both stronger and lighter than the aluminum on the S23 Ultra.

Apple has also trimmed the bezels around the iPhone 15 Pro Max's display and it the design is now contoured — the rounded edges feel comfortable to hold.

Profile of iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Measuring 6.29 x 3.02 x 0.32 inches and weighing 7.8 ounces, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is more compact and lighter than the S23 Ultra's 6.4 x 3.0 x 0.35 inches and 8.2 ounces. To be fair, the S23 Ultra has a slightly larger display and a built-in S Pen.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the curved edges on the S23 Ultra's screen, which can sometimes result in accidental screen touches. But Samsung's punch hole in the display is certainly smaller than the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Winner: iPhone 15 Pro Max

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Display

iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra displays showing Barbie trailer

The iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra both offer stellar OLED displays. The 6.7-inch panel on the iPhone 15 Pro Max is a bit smaller than the 6.8-inch screen on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but they both offer vivid colors and a bright picture along with 120Hz refresh rates.

Side by side, I found the iPhone 15 Pro Max's screen a bit brighter overall, which is backed up by our testing. The Pro Max reached 1,500 nits in our labs when displaying HDR content, compared to 1,444 nits for the S23 Ultra. Indoors the 15 Pro Max looked brighter but in direct sunlight Samsung's adaptive brightness had an edge.

In terms of color reproduction, the Galaxy S23 Ultra turned in higher scores in both the sRGB test and DCI-P3 color space, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max's colors proved more accurate in our Delta-E test as you can see in the results.

I love that Samsung gives you a choice between color profiles but when viewing content the iPhone 15 Pro Max's screen looked a bit better with higher contrast and dimension to subjects as in the above Barbie movie trailer.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Cameras

You won't find more powerful camera phones out there. The iPhone 15 Pro Max offers a 48MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide camera and a new 12MP tetraprism zoom lens with 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom. The front camera remains 12MP.

The biggest iPhone 15 Pro Max camera improvements other than zoom includes the ability to take portraits without having to enter portrait mode, improved Smart HDR for better colors and highlights and a boosted Night mode.

In this photo of the Bryant Park Fountain, the Galaxy S23 Ultra produces the brighter but it looks washed out. The iPhone 15 Pro Max delivers sharping looking water coming from the fountain and better detail in the fountain itself.

In this portrait photo, the Galaxy S23 Ultra once again delivers a brighter shot and my face pops a bit more as Samsung's camera handles the shadows a bit better. But there's more detail in my face and shirt in the iPhone 15 Pro Max pic. I'd probably share the Samsung photo despite some smoothing in my face.

To test the zoom of both phones I started with the side of this building in Manhattan. The stone figures are fairly sharp in both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra but I'd give a slight edge to the Pro Max in overall sharpness as I zoomed in. It also offers a warmer color tone, which some may prefer.

The tables turn here at 25x digital zoom. This is the upper limit of what the iPhone 15 Pro Max can do, and there's a fair amount of noise in the shot. The S23 Ultra's picture is considerably sharper, especially in the lettering.

Heading indoors, I shot this photo at the City Winery of a bunch of wine barrels with a red glow. The iPhone 15 Pro Max renders with more realistic looking shadows but the text on the barrels is more legible through the Samsung. This one is a toss-up for me.

In night mode both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra shine. In this pic of harvest decorations, the Samsung turns in the brightest pic overall. And I like that the straw and flowers look sharper. The iPhone 15 Pro Max's shot is good though, and the scarecrow in the middle has a more realistic orange.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max narrowly takes this night mode comparison shooting a volleyball in front of a pool. The ball itself is sharper and more vibrant versus the Galaxy S23 Ultra. But the concrete on the left has more definition through the Samsung.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max easily takes this selfie round. My face and hair have more detail, and my eyes look a lot clearer. At first glance, the S23 Ultra's shot is certainly brighter and more inviting.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra does the better job here capturing yellow echinacea flowers along with some hay and an pumpkin. The flowers have more detail in the petals and the rest of the shot is in focus. The iPhone 15 Pro Max applies a bokeh to everything but the flowers which adds a sense of depth but I still prefer the Samsung pic.

Once again the Galaxy S23 Ultra wins with a close-up shot in this photo of a fruit tart. The pastry itself has more defined edges and the strawberries and blueberries look crisper. The colors do look more natural through the iPhone 15 Pro Max as Samsung tends to oversaturate things.

In macro mode using the ultrawide cameras both shots are mesmerizing in their own way. The center of the flower is sharper in the Samsung photo, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max's pic has a bit more depth to it.

How about ultrawide photos? This shot is very close between the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra. I like that the wood pile-ons in the water are brighter in the foreground in the iPhone pic, but the building off to the right is overly warm. The Samsung shot has a more even exposure but less contrast.

While both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra are capable of shooting at 4K and 60 fps, I shot these clips at 30 fps in order to be able to use all of the zoom levels. Samsung only lets you change the zoom from 1x to 3x and 10x and beyond while you're shooting in 30 fps mode.

Overall, I prefer the iPhone 15 Pro Max's video clip because there's more contrast in the water and more gradation in the blue sky. And jumping between the zoom levels is much smoother than the jerkier Samsung S23 Ultra. However, once you get to 3x and 10x zoom, the Samsung's footage looks more detailed.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Performance

iPhone 15 Pro Max shown in hand

The iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra are both fast phones, but Apple has vaulted into the lead with its A17 Pro chip. This is the world's first 3nm processor for phones, which packs in even more transistors.

In Geekbench, which measures overall performance, the iPhone 15 Pro Max cleared 2,700 and 6,900 on single-core and multi-core, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra was half as fast on single core and 34 percent slower on single-core.

This matchup was closer in graphics performance, as the iPhone 15 Pro Max notched 92 frames per second in 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited versus 87 fps for the Samsung. But Apple extended its lead in our video editing test, needing only 24.5 seconds to transcode a 4K video to 1080p. That's 15 seconds faster than the S23 Ultra.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Special features

Tom's Guide Awards 2023 winner:

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra's biggest special feature is the S Pen, which is included and lets you take notes, sketch and perform fine photo edits. It can be a pretty valuable tool. Another handy feature is mult-window, which enables you to run two applications on the screen at once. This comes in handy for multitasking.

The One UI 5.1 software for Galaxy S23 Ultra offers several neat fetures. For example, with Bixby Text Call Samsung's assistant can answer incoming calls for you, and then you can pass on messages via speech-to-text or by voice typing.

iPhone 15 Pro Max shown in hand

The iPhone 15 Pro Max arguably has better special features. For example, the new Action button lets you assign any number of shortcuts to it, including muting calls but also launching the camera, flashlight, voice recorder and magnifier. And you can customize thousands of options via the Shortcuts app.

Another unique feature the S23 Ultra can't match is Dynamic Island . This area displays live alerts and activities to save you time. For example, I can see my Uber status at a glance while I'm using other apps, or quickly change tracks on Spotify . It's getting more useful as other developers catch on.

There's lots of great features within iOS 17 , too. Standby mode turns your iPhone into an alarm clock and mini smart display. And it's easier than ever to exchange contact info with NameDrop, though you need another iPhone running iOS 17 to do it.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Battery life and charging

iPhone 15 Pro Max shown in hand

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is simply one of the longest lasting phones we've tested. In our battery testing, which involves continuous web surfing over 5G, the new Pro lasted a whopping 14 hours and 2 minutes.

By comparison, the Galaxy S23 Ultra lasted 13 hours and 9 minutes with its display set to 60Hz mode and 12:22 in adaptive mode. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is adaptive by default and you can't change it.

On the plus side, the Galaxy S23 Ultra charges faster via a 45W charger, getting to 57% in 30 minutes. The iPhone 15 Pro Max got to just 41% in the same amount of time with a 20W charger. We'll be performing additional testing to see how much faster the iPhone can get with a 30W charger.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Verdict

iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra cameras

The iPhone 15 Pro Max wins this very close contest as the best phone overall. It gives you a stunning display in a sturdier and lighter titanium design, and it offers both stronger performance and better battery life than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

However, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is still an amazing phone and it got a narrow victory in the camera round thanks to its brighter and sharper pics and more powerful zoom.

We gave the most points to the camera round, and here the iPhone 15 Pro Max held its own with a number of victories. It tends to produce more detailed portaits and selfies and its Night mode performance and HDR video capture are both top-notch.

The deciding factor really was battery life, as it's hard to argue with up to 2 hours more endurance when the screens are in adaptive mode (1-120Hz). So the iPhone 15 Pro Max takes this very close contest, but the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra could certainly come out on top when it debuts.

Best camera phones for photography in 2024

We pick the best camera phones for photographers to buy, derived from our reviews of the top rated samsung, google, apple iphones and more..

Samsung S23 Ultra vs iPhone 15 Pro Max

The title of best camera phone is ever more hotly contested. As major manufacturers Apple, Samsung and Google constantly compete to come up with better features, higher resolutions and sharper lenses, the discerning smartphone photographer has plenty of choice. And with other manufacturers like Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo and Honor also in the mix, there are lots of affordable budget options, too.

At AP, we take reviewing smartphones as seriously as we do testing the  best mirrorless cameras – after all, far more images are now shot on smartphones than anything else. We look at image quality, video quality, handling, durability, battery life, ease of use, and more. To know more about our testing criteria and what to look for in a smartphone camera, we’ve put together an explainer on how to choose one at the bottom of this page.

The acceleration of progress in smartphone cameras has raised the question of whether they can replicate the quality of digital cameras. Ultimately, with their interchangeable lenses, larger sensors, and raw imaging capability, the answer is: not yet. Some genres and conditions eg portrait photography are certainly better served by a camera than a smartphone. For most users though, the best smartphone cameras will achieve all that they need. See our smartphone camera photo of the week for inspiration.

Best Samsung camera phone: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Amateur Photographer verdict

  • Improved image quality (slightly)
  • Massively improved screen (reduced reflection and improved scratch resistance)
  • Added AI features
  • Reflection removal particularly useful
  • Macro mode lags behind others
  • Shutter lag really hurts for fast moving subjects
  • 45W charging is looking slow

At a glance:

  • 200MP f/1.7 main camera, with OIS, 1/1.3inch, 23mm
  • 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera (0.6x), 13mm
  • 10MP f/2.4 3x telephoto camera, with OIS, 69mm
  • 50MP f/3.4 5x telephoto camera, with OIS, 115mm
  • 12MP f/2.2 PDAF selfie camera (same on all S24 models)
  • 8K 30fps video, 4K 120/60/30fps
  • From $1299 / £1084 (256GB)

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra succeeds S23 Ultra as Samsung’s flagship model. Its main camera has the same headline-grabbing 200MP sensor that uses pixel-binning technology as its predecessor. However, the telephoto camera has been upgraded to a new 50MP 5x telephoto zoom from the previous 10MP 10x telephoto seen on the S22/S23 ultra.

A new generation of AI technology is introduced with the S24 series, utilised during image capture and said to improve night photography, noise performance, zoom quality and HDR imaging among others. AI is also relevant in the new on-device and cloud-based editing features like its new Reflection removal tool.

10x zoom photo. Photo JW

The S24 Ultra records video up to 8K 30fps, and with AI can also be used to create slow-motion videos by generating interim frames in a video, letting you create slow-motion videos after you record them.

Following our full review, we noted the incremental improvements to the cameras and features in Samsung smartphones, but that they remain behind the big competition. We did conclude, though, that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is one of the best camera phones currently available in the mainstream, and we stick by that.

If you’d like one of the newest Samsung phones, but don’t want to spend top dollar, then the Samsung Galaxy S24 offers a compelling option, but with three rear cameras, is considerably cheaper.

Read our full Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra review to see what this smartphone is cable of.

Best Apple camera phone: iPhone 15 Pro

iPhone 15 Pro

  • Improved shooting modes for photo and video
  • Tough and well-built
  • Fairly minor upgrade over iPhone 14 Pro
  • 48MP wide camera, f/1.78 aperture, 24mm equivalent
  • 12MP ultrawide camera, f/2.2 aperture, 13mm equivalent
  • 12MP 3x telephoto camera, f/2.8 aperture, 77mm equivalent
  • 6.1” Super Retina XDR OLED screen
  • Price: from $1,149 / £1,266

While not the biggest iPhone on the block – that being the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which you’ll meet further down this page – the iPhone 15 Pro offers a balanced set of features that make it realistically the best option for most users. It’s no great jump from the previous year’s iPhone 14 Pro, but the iPhone 15 Pro makes several clever useability upgrades that improve the experience for the smartphone photographer and videographer.

For instance, portrait mode can now kick in automatically when the smart facial recognition system detects a human subject (or a pet, for that matter). What’s more, an image can also be turned into a portrait post-capture. Video shooters get new Log profiles, which allows for much more flexibility when it comes to colour-grading footage. And Apple has finally relented on the port and given us the widely used USB-C connection, rather than its proprietary Lightning port. At last!

iPhone 15 Pro Sample Image

In our full review, we concluded that the improvements to the iPhone15 over the iPhone 14 Pro are relatively marginal, and that it was another excellent device. Neither this model nor its bigger Pro Max cousin has quite done enough to dethrone the Samsung Galaxy S23, the current king of the hill when it comes to smartphone imaging.

However, this is a credible effort and an excellent camera phone nonetheless. If you prefer the Apple way of doing things and want a fantastic smartphone for taking pictures, here it is.

Best Google camera phone: Google Pixel 8 Pro

Google Pixel 8 Pro in hand

  • Three high-resolution sensors
  • Computational magic makes images pop
  • Pro control option
  • Price hike from previous model
  • No 1TB storage option
  • Triple camera setup
  • 14mm, 25mm, 113mm equivalent
  • Android operating system
  • 30x Super Res Zoom
  • 10.5MP f/2.2 selfie camera with autofocus
  • Price: $999-$1179 / £999-£1179

While Google’s Pixel smartphones don’t get the same level of press as the flagship phones from Apple and Samsung, the Pixel phones have quietly been building a reputation among those in the know as some of the best camera phones money can buy. The Pixel 8 Pro is the latest flagship – it’s the best Google phone on sale and makes a case for itself as one of the best camera phones, full-stop.

This phone retains a similar triple-lens setup to its predecessor, the Pixel 7 Pro . There’s the tried-and-tested trio of a wide lens, an ultrawide, and a telephoto. Google has improved the maximum aperture on the telephoto lens this time around, expanding it to f/2.8, so low-light performance has been kicked up a notch. There’s also now a “Pro” mode for those who like to take manual control of exposure settings.

However, the headline is that Google has gone all-in on AI, with powerful features like “Best Take” and “Magic Editor” that let you do futuristic, postmodern things like swap out faces in group shots.

GooglePixel 8 Pro sample image Night Sight 1x lens, sculpture and a large building with a clocktower at night illuminated by streetlights

Our original review found the combination of excellent hardware and advanced software further improves the Pixel 8 Pro over previous models in the range. We reckon it is one of the best smartphone cameras around.

Producing excellent images in a wide range of conditions, there’s been a noticeable jump in image quality from its predecessor – something that is often harder to spot from the likes of Apple and Samsung, where advances are generally more subtle.

Read our Google Pixel 8 Pro review to find out why we gave this camera phone the full five stars. See how it fares against one of its biggest rivals in our Google Pixel 8 Pro vs iPhone 15 Pro Max camera comparison.

Best iPhone with long zoom : iPhone 15 Pro Max

iPhone 15 Pro Max in Natural Titanium

  • 5x zoom lens
  • Gorgeous display quality
  • USB-C connection
  • Maybe too large for some users
  • High price, and fairly incremental upgrade from predecessor
  • 12MP 5x telephoto camera, f/2.8 aperture, 120mm equivalent
  • 6.7” Super Retina XDR OLED screen
  • Price: $1299/£1199

While we feel that the iPhone 15 Pro provides the best balance for most users, if you have a bit more cash to spend or prefer a larger phone, the iPhone 15 Pro Max could be the better choice. The display is a glorious 6.7” Super Retina XDR OLED, with a resolution of 2556 x 1179 pixels, at 460ppi and 120Hz – however that isn’t the only difference between the Pro Max and the Pro. You see, where the iPhone 15 Pro has to make to with a 3x optical zoom lens, the iPhone 15 Pro Max ups this to a 5x optical zoom lens, providing better telephoto reach.

Elsewhere, the iPhone 15 Pro Max includes many of the same improvements as the 15 Pro – which is all to the good. So once again we’ve got USB-C charging rather than just Lightning, as well as an effective resolution of 24MP (double that of previous generations). Image quality is excellent across the board; it’s only when you start pushing the limits of the digital zoom that quality starts to suffer.

Apple claimed upon its release that the iPhone 15 Pro Max was the best iPhone yet. So one would hope. Our original reaction to testing its cameras broadly agrees with that view, although its upgrades are relatively gentle. Some will be matters of personal preference and taste; and perhaps what else you need from a phone beyond its cameras.

In short, the best iPhone camera is the iPhone 15 Pro Max, with its advantages over the iPhone 15 Pro as described. This in turn is a moderate improvement on the iPhone 14 Pro. You get the idea!

Read our iPhone 15 Pro Max review , and check out our comparison piece on iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro/Max: Should you upgrade to get 5x zoom?

Best Honor camera phone: Honor Magic 5 Pro

Honor Magic 5 Pro camera screen

  • Triple high-resolution cameras
  • High-end features at an affordable price
  • Gorgeous screen
  • Portrait mode not the best we’ve seen
  • Fairly standard video options
  • Triple 50MP camera system
  • 13mm, 23mm, 90mm equivalent
  • Android 13 operating system
  • Price: $1099 / £949

While the Honor Magic 5 Pro isn’t exactly cheap, its specs put it well on par with contemporary flagships such as the iPhone 14 Pro and Samsung S23 Ultra. It has a triple-array of 50MP cameras – the 13mm ultra-wide, the 23mm wide and the 90mm telephoto all shoot with the same high resolution, so there’s no compromise to quality when switching between focal lengths. There’s also one of those headline-grabbing 100x digital zoom modes like we’ve seen on the S23 Ultra – though here, as there, it’s more a gimmick than something you’d actually use for serious photography.

Otherwise, the Honor Magic 5 Pro puts in a good showing for pretty much everything a modern user asks of a camera phone. Photo quality is consistently good in a variety of conditions, with a capable Night Mode kicking in when the light gets low. While the 100x digital zoom is not up to much, the 10x and 30x options produce credible results, giving you more shooting flexibility at distance. There’s a handy Super Macro mode for getting in close, and you can toggle High-Resolution mode to use all 50 of those megapixels when you want to. The Portrait Mode is a little over-processed – we felt that images looked a little fake around hair outlines, with rival phones producing much better results. But overall, the Honor Magic 5 Pro is consistently impressive.

animal sculpture close up on building

There’s not much to criticise here. The video resolution tops out at 4K rather than 8K as is becoming commonplace, but in all honesty this is not something that will matter to most users. More significant may be the lack of an advanced stabilisation mode. The Honor Magic 5 Pro produces good-looking video, but if it’s a vlogging phone you seek, there are better choices out there.

Best Xiaomi camera phone: Xiaomi 14 Ultra

The four lenses of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Image credit: Amy Davies

  • 1inch main sensor
  • Four 50MP cameras
  • Raw shooting and pro mode
  • Photography kit available
  • Selfie camera doesn’t have AF
  • Not available in every market
  • Quad 50MP camera system and Leica lenses
  • 12mm, 23mm, 75mm, 120mm equivalent
  • Android 14 operating system
  • Price: £1299

There’s an awful lot to like about the Xiaomi 14 Ultra . It’s packed with a great range of features, including a one-inch main sensor, putting it ahead of most rivals. It even lets you set the aperture on the main camera, something you rarely find outside of DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras. You can shoot using all four lenses in 50MP mode. Video performs pretty well and it has a slew of options including slow motion, night video, video pro mode and a tracking mode.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra sample image cityscape with a a square and clocktower 1x zoom

While the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is not cheap, it fares well when compared to competing flagship models. It is also likely to drop in price more quickly – on the second-hand market too – compared with the likes of the bigger name (at least in certain markets) Samsung and Apple phones. Keep an eye out for an emerging gap in prices.

Our review found it to be an extremely capable smartphone which produces excellent results in a wide variety of different shooting scenarios, with some impressive close-up performance as well. In our opinion, it even gives the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra a run for it’s money, which is saying a lot!

Best value for close-up photography: iQOO 12

iQOO 12 Legend Edition. Photo Joshua Waller / AP

  • Excellent high-ISO performance
  • Fast operation and high-quality display
  • Macro mode works with telephoto lens
  • Only available in certain territories
  • Selfie camera not the best
  • 50MP main wide-angle, f/1.68, OIS, 23mm equivalent (1/1.3inch sensor)
  • 50MP ultra-wide-angle, f/2.0, 15mm equivalent
  • 64MP telephoto, f/2.57, 3x/70mm equivalent, OIS
  • 6.78inch screen, AMOLED, 144Hz, up to 3000nits brightness
  • £550 (sim-free)

This clever smartphone by vivo sub-brand iQOO sits firmly in the mid-range, with an impressive set of cameras, especially considering the price! Equipped with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 , this BMW sport branded phone also offers BMW-like operating speeds, with a high-quality AMOLED display that boasts a 144Hz refresh rate. The body of the phone is IP64 rated, meaning it’ll stand up to a rain shower and can be used without fear in difficult weather.

But of course, we’re interested in how that unusually bulbous camera array performs. The iQOO 12 boasts an impressive triple-camera setup , as is pretty common among mid-range and high-end smartphones. The main camera uses a larger-than-average 1/1.3-inch sensor with 50MP of resolution, and produces consistently clean results, especially in low light. IQOO have leaned into the phone’s low light credentials by equipping it with a number of interesting specialised astrophotography modes. Elsewhere on the array, you’ve got a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 64MP telephoto lens – the latter of which is notable for being compatible with the Macro mode – letting you get great close-up photos.

In use, the IQOO 12 proved a highly capable camera phone that more than justified its mid-range price tag. The larger sensor on the main camera mean the high-ISO performance is excellent, making the phone immensely capable in low light. We noted in our review that the selfie camera is a little weak, lacking autofocus and only able to shoot video in a maximum of Full HD. It’s also worth noting that this phone is currently only available in some territories. If you can get hold of one though, it’s a snappy performer with highly capable cameras. JS.

Best iPhone 14: Apple iPhone 14 Pro

iPhone 14 Pro Review

  • Very good Night mode
  • New 48MP sensor delivers flexibility
  • 4K 60p video
  • Easy to use
  • Not quite as versatile as S22 Pro
  • Not a huge jump from 13 Pro
  • Relatively expensive
  • Quad-camera setup
  • 3x and 2x telephoto cameras
  • iOS operating system
  • Two sizes: Pro and Pro Max
  • Price: from $999 / £1,099

The iPhone 14 Pro is a commendable – if somewhat iterative – upgrade to Apple’s flagship smartphone. If you want the best Apple smartphone for photographers, this is definitely it.

With a new 48MP sensor as part of its camera array, the iPhone 14 Pro reliably produces excellent images, and specialist modes like Macro and Portrait help out the user in various different shooting situations. It’s already pricey, though if you have the budget you can go for the larger iPhone 14 Pro Max. This model has an identical camera array, just a larger display.

iPhone 14 Pro camera sample image in Macro Mode, taken by Amy Davies

When it came out, we liked a lot about the iPhone 14 Pro, and it undeniably produces some excellent imagery. In truth, it was a small turn in evolution from the iPhone 13 Pro before it. Only those with a 12 Pro or older would find a leap to the 14 Pro worthy of the outlay.

Second best Google Phone : Google Pixel 8

Google Pixel 8. Photo JW/AP

  • Improved ultra-wide module with AF and Macro mode
  • Clever computational features
  • Images have consistently punchy colours
  • No Manual mode
  • No AF on the selfie camera
  • Dual camera setup
  • AI powered computational photography features
  • 4K 60fps video from rear and front cameras
  • Uses Android operating system
  • Price: $699 / £699

The Google Pixel 8 is a compelling option for those who want to take advantage of Google’s latest AI bells and whistles, but don’t want to pay a four-figure price for a top-end flagship smartphone. Using a dual main camera setup, with a wide lens and an ultra-wide, the Pixel 8 consistently delivers impressive images. Like the Pixel 8 Pro, it offers the latest AI magic like Magic Editor and Best Take, and it also gains a Macro Mode, which the Pixel 7 didn’t have.

In use, the Pixel 8 is intuitive and versatile. You can shoot long exposures, night images and astro photographs by flicking between modes, and the 4K 60p video looks great. While there’s no telephoto module, the Digital Zoom does surprisingly well, and if you try to keep it to 2x you’ll consistently get good-looking results. All modes consistently deliver images with great, punchy colours that aren’t oversaturated. The selfie camera produces attractive results, though it does lack autofocus.

You can use hybrid zoom, and results remain good - this was shot at 2x zoom. Google Pixel 8 sample photo. Photo Joshua Waller

The Google Pixel 8 is an excellent camera phone with some very impressive photography features. Even without using these features, the cameras produce some beautiful images with excellent exposure, good detail, and pleasing colour reproduction.

The advanced photographic features and consistently good results from this phone make it a real contender to Samsung and Apple. It’s also priced competitively, and gives other phones a serious challenge.

Second best Samsung Phone: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

  • Fantastic all-rounder with superb image quality
  • Four lenses
  • Pro shooting mode and RAW format
  • Resolution jump can be hard to spot in practice
  • Space Zoom not actually that useable
  • 10x telephoto lens a bit smudgy
  • 200MP wide camera, 1/1.3” sensor, f/1.7 aperture
  • 12MP ultra wide camera, 1/2.55” sensor, f/2.2 aperture
  • 10MP telephoto camera, 1/3.52” sensor, f/2.4 aperture
  • 10MP telephoto camera, 1/3.52” sensor, f/4.9 aperture
  • 8K video 30fps, 4K video 60fps
  • Price: $1,683 / £1,399

With an impressive 200MP main camera sensor, which is a first for Samsung (although it’s made such large resolution sensors for other makers before). In comparison, the S22 Ultra had a 108MP device, so it’s a big leap forward.

Before getting too excited, remember that images are not output at 200MP by default, although it is possible to shoot in super high resolution mode if you really want to. Rather, the new phone makes use of  pixel-binning technology  so the images come in at a more practical 12.5 megapixels, with enhanced lighting and detail.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The main camera features a f/1.7 stabilised lens, backed up by a 12MP ultra wide f/2.2 combination. Then there are two telephoto lenses, both with 10 megapixel sensors. One has 3x zoom and an f/2.4 lens, while the other offers a a 10x zoom with an f/4.9 aperture. Digital zoom goes as far as 30x or 100x if you need it (though as with the phone’s predecessor, digital zoom should only be used as a last resort). So the S23 Ultra has jumped ahead of the iPhone 14 Pro and the Google Pixel 7 Pro, which only have three lenses.

Last year’s Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was so good, that we knew that the company would have to go some way to topping it. The good news is that it has done so – but less good is that you have to really examine the pictures to see the difference.

In conclusion, you could be left a little disappointed by upgrading if you expect much difference to your photography. Images directly from the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s main (200MP) sensor show more detail than last year’s S22 Ultra main (108MP) sensor. But, that’s really only obvious if you’re comparing like-for-like images shot at the same time and you zoom in closely.’

If you’d like one of the newest Samsung phones, but don’t want to spend top dollar, then the Samsung Galaxy S23 offers a compelling option, but with three rear cameras, is considerably cheaper.

Best camera phone for under $600 / £600: Google Pixel 7

Google Pixel 7 review image

  • Excellent 50MP main camera
  • Same launch price as Pixel 6
  • Screen looks punchy and bright
  • Night photography is fast and looks great
  • Generally fast, responsive operation
  • Selfie camera reliably produces great results
  • There is no Pro or manual mode
  • HDR can’t be turned off unless you shoot raw
  • Fixed focus selfie camera
  • No macro mode
  • Optical Image Stabilisation
  • Up to 8x “Super Res Zoom”
  • Price: $594 / £526

The Google Pixel 7 is a well-designed and attractively priced phone that sits firmly in the mid range. We applaud Google’s brave decision of going with a dual camera array – many smartphone makers tack on a rubbish 2MP macro camera or similar so they can say their phone has a triple-camera setup, when there’s no need for it.

The combination of a 50MP f/1.85 wide-angle camera and a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens works really well for the vast majority of situations, and the digital zoom gives you an extra 2x power in a pinch (it goes up to 8x, but we don’t recommend going that far).

Amsterdam train station, 1/478s, f/1.8, ISO41, 7mm/24mm equivalent

The main thing you might find you miss is a really good close-up mode – if you can live without that, the Google Pixel 7 offers exceptional value for money in a crowded field.

In our review we noted: “If you don’t want to spend flagship money on a smartphone and simply want an excellent camera system, then the Pixel 7 offers an excellent combination of features, for a great price. At $599 / £599 you get a great main camera, a very good ultra-wide, and a decent selfie camera. Whilst we’d love to see a macro mode, we think the computational photography features help make up for this.”

Best looking camera phone: OPPO Find X5 Pro

OPPO Find X5 Pro Camera Phone

  • Well balanced camera system
  • Good feature set
  • Fine image quality
  • Good video, especially in low light
  • Short telephoto lens
  • Super-slippery back
  • Android smartphone
  • Triple camera system
  • 12MP standard output
  • Price: $889 / £749

This high-end smartphone is equipped with a good-looking camera that performs well and takes great pictures and video. It is a Hasselblad -branded triple-camera system, which includes an ultra-wide, wide and telephoto lens. Its aesthetics feel like a mix of the Google Pixel 6 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.

The OPPO Find X5 uses a conventional-looking Android camera app, with a familiar set of options and includes both a fully automatic Photo mode and a Pro mode. With manual control you can tweak shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation, focus and white balance.

OPPO Find X5 Camera Phone Pro Screen

From our review: “I was most impressed by the low-light performance, and the way the camera is capable of rendering a full range of brightness and colour even under streetlights at night. It’s not magic – if there’s not enough light for you to see anything, it won’t either – but I haven’t seen another smartphone capable of this kind of low-light video quality.”

Best second hand Samsung camera phone: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra camera phone

  • Stunning display
  • Pro shooting mode and raw support
  • Can be unwieldy
  • Quad-camera rear setup
  • Two telephoto lenses
  • Pro mode available with raw shooting
  • Refurbished price: $600 / £600

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was Samsung’s 2022 flagship smartphone, the one you saw on TV, YouTube, and billboard adverts worldwide, boasting an incredible 100x “Superzoom” that uses a combination of it’s 10x optical zoom telephoto lens, and digital zoom to give you a 100x view of your subject.

S22 Ultra, 1/3208s, f/2.4, ISO50, 8mm/69mm equivalent (3x telephoto)

While we weren’t so impressed by the image quality of this feature, the other cameras on offer were very good. The ultra-wide angle lens (13mm equivalent), the ultra-wide (24mm equivalent), the 3x telephoto (72mm equivalent), or the 10x telephoto (240mm equivalent), all produce fine looking images.

Images directly from the camera are very good, with vibrant and bright results produced by the standard “Photo” mode and images with good scope for editing produced by the “Pro” mode. Other shooting modes, such as Portrait and Night mode also produce good results.

Best second hand iPhone for photos: Apple iPhone 13 Pro

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max

  • Improved cameras with brighter lenses
  • Addition of 2cm macro mode
  • More telephoto reach
  • All cameras feature image stabilisation
  • Cinematic video mode
  • Not much reason to upgrade from iPhone 12
  • Cinematic mode isn’t always accurate with masking regions to be blurred
  • Triple 12MP camera setup
  • 13mm, 26mm, 77mm equivalent
  • Price: $938 / £717

The Apple iPhone 13 Pro  offers an improvement over the iPhone 12 Pro, with brighter lenses, a new 2cm macro mode, and more telephoto reach. All cameras feature image stabilisation, and there’s a new cinematic video mode. If you’ve wanted to shoot macros with an iPhone, or interested in video recording then there’s a lot of reasons to choose the iPhone 13 Pro.

iPhone 13 Pro Camera Phone Sample Photo

In our review we wrote: “When shooting stills, the iPhone 13 Pro does a great job of identifying the subject and focusing on it quickly even in very low light. It also manages create natural-looking shallow depth of field effects in many instances, even dealing with fuzzy subjects like fur and hair effectively in many cases.”

How to choose the best camera phone

best camera phones for photography

Sensors and image quality

Comparing the headline specs of camera phones can be a useful way of getting a sense of how they perform, and which ones might be better than others. Digital photography enthusiasts may gravitate towards comparing  camera resolution   (megapixels or MP for short) , however this often doesn’t tell the whole story .

Smartphone cameras use  very small sensors , due to their physical size and shape, and this can mean a lot of image noise in high-resolution shooting. If a camera phone has a high megapixel count, it also needs a capable image processing system to ensure it’s capable of producing pleasing images.

When we talk about a smartphone’s main camera (i.e. the rear camera), we’re really talking about more than one, as modern smartphones use a  camera array  made up of multiple modules. This is what allows smartphones to shoot at different perspectives; generally there will be a standard wide lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and then sometimes a telephoto lens or a macro-lens for close-ups .

iPhone 14 Pro Vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The different lenses use their own sensors, and as such will tend to have different megapixel counts. Some of the latest smartphones even use quad camera arrays with four modules, while other manufacturers are experimenting with  optical zoom lenses , though this tech is in its early days.

Battery life and video

You should also consider  battery life , as some phones last the day while others do not. If you’re shooting video, this is particularly important, as it tends to eat away at a phone’s battery faster.

The top video resolution will be of interest, as you’ll likely want at least the option to shoot 4K. You’ll also want advanced lens options and good audio recording capabilities .

Check out the best smartphones for video if that’s your priority, but otherwise, continue reading.

iOS vs Android

iPhone vs Android: which is better for photographers?

One big thing to think about is whether you want to use a phone that runs iOS or Android as its operating system. Both systems have their own advantages and disadvantages when it comes to smartphone photography, as well as general use as a smartphone.

If you already use a lot of Apple products like MacBooks then an iPhone will integrate better into your system. However, Android phones offer a lot more choice and flexibility with third-party apps. These days, Android phones from market leaders like Google and Samsung have some of the best cameras in the business.

You can check out our guide to iPhone vs Android: which is better for photography for a detailed comparison.

10 Samsung Galaxy Camera Tricks You Need To Try

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Samsung's Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets has long been known for including more features than anyone could possibly use, and the cameras on those devices are no exception. Aside from massive megapixel counts and triple-digit zoom capabilities, the camera software is crammed full of features you'll never find if you don't go digging.

For those who just want to point and shoot, any phone will do, but Galaxy devices take things to the next level with a slew of hidden features that will make you the photographer of your friend group. From taking pictures completely hands-free using voice commands to unlocking settings that aren't there by default, here are some Samsung Galaxy camera tricks that will take your Instagram game to the next level and make it easier to get the perfect shot.

All the features in this list work on devices running One UI 5.0 and above, with a couple of caveats. For our testing, the latest version of One UI that I had access to is version 6.0 running on a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra , but if you're one of the lucky people to own one of the new Galaxy S24 phones , everything should still work. Any feature that utilizes the S Pen is, obviously, limited to devices with S Pen support. Without further preamble, let's get snapping.

Hold Up Palm To Take Pictures And Videos

It's happened to everyone. Your friends want to take a group shot, so someone pulls out their iPhone or Pixel, but no one else is around to hold the phone. "It's fine," they say. "I'll just prop it up on this shelf and start a timer." Suddenly, everyone is scrambling to pose, but inevitably, not everyone does, and the resulting shot is disappointing. Samsung Galaxy owners, it's up to you to stop this scenario before it unfolds by using your phone's ability to take pictures remotely by holding up a hand. After everyone is in position for the photo, you can simply raise a palm to the camera to begin the photo timer. Note that this feature only works on the front-facing selfie camera.

To use palm detection for pictures on your Samsung Galaxy camera:

  • Open the camera app on your Galaxy device.
  • Tap the gear icon in the top left corner of the screen to open the camera settings.
  • Tap, "Shooting methods."
  • Toggle on the option, "Show palm."
  • Return to the main camera viewfinder.
  • Place your Galaxy device on a stable surface or tripod, then step into the frame.
  • Hold up an open hand with your palm facing the camera, and the photo timer will begin counting down.

The palm recognition feature works on devices as far back as the Galaxy S6 series. It works best in bright lighting conditions, and you may need to fiddle with the exact gesture of your hand to make it work.

Say Cheese To Take Pictures And Videos Hands-Free

One theme that will become evident as we uncover the hidden secrets of the Galaxy camera app is that Samsung has included a ludicrous number of ways to take a photo hands-free. On top of the palm method described above, you can also trigger a photo countdown by saying, "Cheese," "Smile, "Capture," or "Shoot," and you can begin recording video by saying, "Record video." Not only is this a convenient -- and, frankly, magical -- way to take photos, but since you're not touching the phone to take the photo, it should result in more stable shots. This feature works on devices as far back as the Galaxy S6 series of phones.

To use voice commands on your Samsung Galaxy camera:

  • Toggle on the option, "Voice commands."
  • Say one of the trigger phrases to begin a photo timer.

Note that this feature may not work as well in noisy environments, or if the phone is placed too far away from you. In either scenario, the microphones may not pick up your command phrase. If you're having trouble using voice commands to take photos on your Galaxy device, try moving to a quieter environment or bringing it closer to you.

Use Your S Pen As A Remote Control

Although it often goes overlooked, the S Pen stylus is one of Samsung's most impressive hardware features. A sleek Bluetooth pen that comes included with some Galaxy devices, it unlocks a range of productivity features, making it the best stylus for Android . But did you know that it also makes you a camera wizard?

The S Pen can be used as a remote for the camera, making it feel like a magic wand for photography. Pressing the S Pen's button will take a photo or begin video recording. Holding the button down in photo mode will take a burst shot. Pressing the button and gesturing left or right will switch shooting modes, while gesturing up or down will switch between the front and rear cameras.

This trick works on all S Pen-equipped Galaxy devices as far back as the Galaxy Note 9. That includes the S22, S23, and S24 Ultras, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Despite the fact that the latter device does not come with an S Pen, a compatible pen is sold separately.

Make The Shutter Button Easier To Reach With Floating Shutter

Flagship phones keep getting bigger and more unwieldy, stretching out their screens to sizes that would have been considered tablet-sized a decade ago. As the company that kicked off the big phone trend, Samsung's lineup continues to include massive phones like the "Ultra" devices it places at the premium end of its offerings. Anyone who's taken photos on those devices knows that it can require some serious hand gymnastics to get a shot, especially when trying to do so one-handed. Thankfully, Samsung's camera app has a solution for that problem. The feature is called Floating Shutter, and it lets you drag the shutter button around the screen so you can place it at a more convenient angle. Floating Shutter works on devices at least as far back as the Galaxy S6.

To enable and use Floating Shutter:

  • Tap on the gear icon in the top left corner of the screen to open the camera settings.
  • Toggle on the option for "Floating Shutter."
  • Return to the main camera viewfinder screen.
  • Drag the shutter button to your desired location on the screen. It should stay in place, and tapping it will take a photo.

Find The Perfect Bottle Of Wine With Bixby Vision

Have you ever struggled to pick the right bottle of wine, only to pop the cork, pour a glass, and taste disappointment? The fact is, choosing wine can be a roll of the dice, but your Samsung Galaxy device's Bixby Vision camera features can help ensure that you bring home a bottle you'll actually enjoy.

Bixby Vision is a suite of camera-based smart features built into Samsung's camera app. The included wine mode allows you to point your phone at a wine bottle's label to display ratings, flavor profiles, and other information about it. The feature works based on a partnership with wine database app Vivino. It is available on devices as far back as the Galaxy S9.

To use wine mode:

  • Open the Galaxy camera app and scroll through the list of modes above the shutter button until you reach, "More."
  • At the top left of the screen, tap Bixby Vision. At this point, you may be prompted to install Bixby Vision if you have not used it in the past. Simply follow through the prompts, and eventually you will be returned to the camera app.
  • Select Bixby Vision once more from the modes list, then scroll through the Bixby Vision modes until you reach the "Wine" option.
  • Point your camera at the label on a wine bottle. The app should automatically capture the label and surface information about the wine.

If wine mode does not identify the label, try moving to better lighting, and ensure that the label is centered in the camera frame.

Take Photos When Your Finger Touches The Shutter

You may not know that, when you press the shutter button to take a picture, the photo is not captured when your finger touches the button. Rather, it is captured when the button is released . The practical reason for that slightly slower shooting method is that holding down the shutter button will record video, meaning whether or not you immediately release the shutter is how the software determines whether you're shooting photo or video. However, using the Camera Assistant module in Samsung's enhancement suite, Good Lock , you can force Samsung's camera app to take the photo the moment you depress the shutter.

To enable the quicker shooting method, you'll first need to install the Good Lock app from the Samsung Galaxy Store. Then, from within Good Lock, install the Camera Assistant module. Note that Camera Assistant is only updated for recent versions of One UI, and may not be available on your device. Once Camera Assistant is installed, return to the camera app and follow these steps:

  • From the main viewfinder of the camera app, tap the gear icon in the top left corner of the screen to open camera settings.
  • Tap, "Camera Assistant."
  • Enable the toggle for, "Quick tap shutter."

From now on, pictures will be taken the moment your finger makes contact with the shutter button, helping you to capture the kinds of moments that slip away in an instant.

Capture Immersive Audio With Galaxy Buds2 Pro

What if you could hear videos shot from your phone as if you were standing in the same space where they were recorded? Well, you can! Using a pair of Galaxy Buds2 Pro, you can capture binaural, 360-degree audio when recording video, meaning that when playing the video back on supported headsets or speaker arrangements, sounds will appear to be coming from where they were relative to you when you were recording. Enabling this feature will disable the "Zoom-in mic" feature. This works on the Galaxy S23 and later models.

To enable the 360 audio recording feature:

  • Tap the gear icon in the top left corner to open camera settings.
  • Find and tap on, "Advanced video options.
  • Toggle on the option for "360 audio recording."

To shoot video with 360 audio:

  • Connect your Galaxy Buds2 Pro to your device via Bluetooth.
  • Open the camera app.
  • Switch to video mode.
  • Begin recording. Your video should now be recording 360 audio from your Galaxy Buds2 Pro.

Keep Your Camera In The Mode You Last Used

Normally, the camera on a Galaxy phone will open to the standard photo mode, even if you were previously using a different mode. That can be annoying, especially if you're consistently trying to record video at an event, where wasting precious seconds switching into video mode could cost you the shot you're aiming for. However, you can force the phone to stay in the mode that was last used by heading to "Settings to keep" in the camera settings. This works on all Samsung phones running One UI.

To keep your Samsung Galaxy device's camera in the mode you last used it with, follow these steps:

  • From the main viewfinder screen of the camera app, open camera settings by tapping the gear icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  • Tap "Settings to keep." Here, you'll be presented with a list of various settings that your device would otherwise revert away from.
  • Enable the toggle for "Camera mode."

Correct Lens Distortion

Since camera lenses are curved bits of glass, there's always at least a small amount of distortion in a photo compared to reality. Take a close-up shot of someone's face with a wide-angle lens, for example, and their nose will appear enlarged while the rest of their features become flattened. For this reason, professional photographers use a variety of different lenses to minimize that warping effect. On a smartphone, the lenses you have built in are the ones you're stuck with, but using the Camera Assistant module in Samsung's enhancement suite, Good Lock, you can enable distortion correction, which will compensate for lens warping by adjusting the photo. This can be especially helpful for selfies, which distort your face when taken close-up.

To use this feature, you'll first need to install Good Lock from the Samsung Galaxy Store app. Once installed, open it, and install the Camera Assistant module. Camera Assistant is only available on recent versions of One UI, so those with older devices may be out of luck.

Once both Good Lock and the Camera Assistant are installed, open the main camera app, and follow these steps:

  • Open camera settings by tapping the gear icon in the top left corner.
  • Tap "Camera Assistant."
  • Toggle on the option, "Distortion correction."
  • Return to the main viewfinder. Any photo you take will now have distortion correction applied to it.

Take Multiple Photos On A Single Timer

This tip is for those of us who've lined our friends up, placed our Galaxy phone down nearby, started a timer , and told everyone to say, "Cheese," only to be disappointed in the resulting shot and redo that entire process. Using the Camera Assistant module in Samsung's enhancement suite, Good Lock, you can use the "Timer multi-photo options" to take up to seven photos each time a timer photo is taken. You can also set the photos to be taken at intervals between one and three seconds apart, giving your subjects time to adjust between shots. Camera Assistant is only available on recent versions of One UI, so those with older devices may not have access to it.

To use this feature, you'll first need to install Good Lock from the Samsung Galaxy Store app. Once installed, open it, then install the Camera Assistant module. After both Good Lock and the Camera Assistant are installed, follow these steps:

From the main viewfinder screen of the camera app, open camera settings by tapping the gear icon in the upper left corner of the screen.

  • Scroll down and tap, "Timer multi-photo options."
  • You will be presented with a range of options to adjust the number of pictures taken on a single timer, as well as the interval between photos. Set both parameters to your preference.

Ivan 14 April 2024

Week in review Featured

Welcome to another week's recap. Samsung announced that it's moving the Galaxy S20 series from monthly security updates over to a quarterly schedule, meaning the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra will get patches every three months.

Redmi announced the Redmi Turbo 3. It has a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip, a 6.67-inch AMOLED with 2,712 x 1,220px resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, and a 50MP Sony LYT-600 main camera. The Turbo 3 runs Android 14 with Xiaomi's HyperOS, and packs a 5,000mAh battery with 90W charging. Pricing in China starts at CNY 1,999 ($276) for the 12/256GB trim, while open sales begin on April 15.

HMD launched three feature phones - the Nokia 6310, the 5310, and the 230. All three have USB-C ports and bigger batteries than their Nokia-named predecessors.

A major leak seemingly laid bare the iPhone 16 series batteries. The iPhone 16 is said to sport a 3,561 mAh cell, 6% larger than its predecessor's, while the iPhone 16 Plus will make do with a 4,006 mAh battery, which is 9% less than what the iPhone 15 Plus had to play with. Over on the Pro side of the fence, the iPhone 16 Pro is rumored to come with a 3,355 mAh cell, 2.5% larger than its predecessor's, while the Pro Max will allegedly have a 4,676 mAh battery, 5% larger than the iPhone 15 Pro Max's.

Motorola confirmed it will unveil the Edge 50 series in full on April 16. Expect the Edge 50 Pro, the Edge 50 Ultra, and the Edge 50 Fusion.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 specs predictions: all the key specs we expect

A mix of old and new

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 review front handheld angled open

There’s every chance that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be the most popular foldable phone of the year. After all, it comes from the leader in the foldable space, and it’s likely to be far more affordable than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 .

But that likely lower price doesn’t mean the specs won’t be up to scratch, as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will probably have a top-end chipset, among other impressive specs. Then again, some aspects of the phone might be less impressive.

So to give you a clearer idea of what specs to expect – both good and bad – here’s a rundown of the key rumored specs of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 predicted specs

The chart above details the key specs that we’re currently expecting from the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, based on the rumors we’ve heard so far combined with some educated guesses. So none of this is confirmed just yet, but it’s our best guess as to what we’ll see when the phone launches – likely in July.

Starting with the foldable screen, we’re expecting this to be a 6.7-inch one, as multiple sources have said the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will have a 6.7-inch screen . That’s the same size as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 ’s screen but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as few phones have screens that are much bigger than 6.7 inches.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 will also almost certainly use AMOLED, just like its predecessor, and we’ve heard that the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s brightness might be the same as last year too (meaning 1,750 nits). That same source claims that unsurprisingly it will also have a 120Hz refresh rate once again.

There’s no news on the resolution, but with the other screen specs possibly being the same as last year, we’d think there’s a good chance that will be too, meaning a resolution of 1080 x 2640.

The cover screen however could be in for some improvements, with numerous sources saying the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will have a 3.9-inch cover screen (up from 3.4 inches on the Galaxy Z Flip 5). We’ve also heard that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6’s cover screen could have a 120Hz refresh rate (up from 60Hz).

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 review front handheld angled closed

As with the foldable display there’s no news on what the cover screen’s resolution might be. And this is harder to predict, since if it’s a larger size then it’s likely to also be higher resolution than the 720 x 748 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.

The chipset is another aspect that we’re expecting to get upgraded, with both leaks and logic pointing to a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 . That would be a generational leap from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the current model, and would also see it match the Samsung Galaxy S24 line for power.

That said, some versions of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 might instead get an Exynos chipset (likely an Exynos 2400). If so, it’s likely that the version you get will depend on where you are in the world, as this is the approach Samsung has taken with the Galaxy S24. Either way though, that's a top-end chipset.

For RAM, the options will reportedly be 8GB and 12GB, while storage is rumored to come in at a choice of 256GB and 512GB. For reference, the Z Flip 5 has the same storage configurations, but only an 8GB of RAM model.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 review camera closeup

On to the cameras, and multiple leaks suggest the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will have a 50MP main camera , up from a 12MP one on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. That said, one source disagrees and says its will be 12MP again, so while we suspect 50MP is right we can’t be certain.

It’s also expected to have a second rear camera, which will likely be a 12MP ultra-wide one, just like last year. We haven’t heard anything about the front-facing camera, so for now we’re predicting a return of the Z Flip 5’s 10MP one.

Finally, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6’s battery will apparently be 4,000mAh . We’ve heard that claim from several sources, so it’s likely accurate; especially as others have more vaguely said it will have better battery life (which a 4,000mAh battery would likely deliver, as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a 3,700mAh one).

That’s all the key specs covered, but again, this is mostly leaks paired with a few educated guesses, so there’s a chance any of this could be wrong.
