AMON AMARTH will release its twelfth studio album, "The Great Heathen Army" , on August 5 via Metal Blade .

Recorded with esteemed studio guru Andy Sneap at the controls, "The Great Heathen Army" represents another bold leap forward for AMON AMARTH , as their trademark sound undergoes yet another skillful, evolutionary overhaul, both lyrically and musically. From the noisily rabble-rousing "Find A Way Or Make One" and the pummeling, pugilistic "Get In The Ring" to the evocative fury of "Saxons & Vikings" and the cinematic squall of the title track, "The Great Heathen Army" encapsulates the essence of this legendary band, while still allowing acres of space for new ideas.

AMON AMARTH vocalist Johan Hegg comments: "Overall 'The Great Heathen Army' is one of the heavier albums we've made. There are some dark and heavy songs that are really powerful and in your face, but we obviously have some trademark melodic AMON AMARTH songs on there as well and a few surprises too. It's a really well-balanced album. It sounds great. Andy Sneap is awesome. It was great to be able to work with him again."

Guitarist Olavi Mikkonen adds: "We've been away making new music and we're back with new darker, more death metal-sounding album. If 'Berserker' was our 'heavy metal' album, then 'The Great Heathen Army' is our 'death metal' album. But with that said, it's still very much contemporary AMON AMARTH , but perhaps style-wise we have gone back to our roots a little bit."

This past February, AMON AMARTH released a standalone single, "Put Your Back Into The Oar" , an ode to the epic Viking row. The track was recorded and mixed in January 2021 at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden with producer Jens Bogren and was made available via the band's own label Victorious Music .

The "Put Your Back Into The Oar" video was shot in England over three days in October 2021. The atmospheric, cinematic clip was produced by Twin V and directed by Ryan MackFall at Crashburn Media .

AMON AMARTH will team up with MACHINE HEAD for the "Vikings And Lionhearts" co-headlining European arena tour in September and October.

AMON AMARTH 's last album, "Berserker" , was released in May 2019 via Metal Blade Records . The disc was recorded at Sphere Studios in North Hollywood, California with producer Jay Ruston , who has previously worked with ANTHRAX , STEEL PANTHER , URIAH HEEP and STONE SOUR .

AMON AMARTH enlisted a session drummer, Tobias Gustafsson ( VOMITORY , CUT UP ),during the recording sessions for 2016's "Jomsviking" , following the departure of longtime drummer Fredrik Andersson . The band tapped OCTOBER TIDE drummer Jocke Wallgren as Andersson 's permanent replacement six years ago.

AMON AMARTH stands tall and unassailable: 30 years into a career that has seen them evolve from humble origins in the dark, dank rehearsal rooms of their native Tumba to their current status as explosive festival headliners and one of the metal world's most widely adored bands.

Formed in 1992, AMON AMARTH became modern metal greats the hard way. Ruthlessly dedicated to creating new music and taking it out on the road, the Swedes steadily built a formidable reputation as a ferocious live band and, as the years passed, were increasingly recognized for their recorded achievements too. Since the dawn of the millennium, AMON AMARTH has been unstoppable.

Breakthrough releases like 2006's "With Oden On Our Side" and its now-legendary follow-up, 2008's "Twilight Of The Thunder God" further cemented their popularity throughout the metal world, while the band's stage show evolved with each successive tour, transforming into one of modern metal's truly great spectacles. "Berserker" brought with it an epic, history-making trek across North America with fellow Swedes ARCH ENEMY , AT THE GATES and GRAND MAGUS and saw multiple sell-outs.

Amon Amarth

After more than 20 years of slogging away on the road in both North America and overseas, Swedish Viking metallers Amon Amarth are finally having a moment.

Three years ago, the band went on a series of sold-out headlining theater tours that cemented their place in metal, in support of their 10th album, 2016’s Jomsviking . As a result of their dedication, Amon Amarth has now penetrated U.S. consciousness enough that singer Johan Hegg — a Washington Capitals fan —  joined a February segment of NHL Now , and Cleveland Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer walks out to the mound with the band’s “The Pursuit of Vikings” as his theme. (Amon Amarth repaid the love by having Bauer appear in its video “Raise the Horns.”)

A band whose lyrics are steeped in Viking history, Amon Amarth went the concept route for new record Berserker (May 3 on Metal Blade Records). The collection is based on the story of England’s Battle at Stamford Bridge in 1066, when King Harold Godwinson faced off against the invading Norse army of Vikings, led Norway’s King Harald Hardrada and Godwinson’s own brother Tostig. When the Vikings had to retreat over the bridge, they sent one man out with an axe in an effort to slow the English army. He killed 40 men before he was taken. “It’s a pretty amazing tale, and since it’s the English who told it, you can believe it’s not a myth, but actually happened that way,” says Hegg. “And for a metalhead who typically feels like an outsider, the story of one man alone against an army is especially meaningful.”

Trending on Billboard

To support Berserker , the band hit the road on May 13 for a shed tour with Slayer, Lamb of God and Cannibal Corpse. “Slayer are really good guys, and we love playing with them. It’s a huge honor to have been asked to be on this tour, as this is their farewell run,” says Hegg, calling the group “probably the most influential band in the history of Amon Amarth.” AA will then head abroad for a summer European festival tour before returning to the States this fall for its headlining Berserker World Tour, featuring Arch Enemy, At the Gates and Grand Magus — an all-Swedish lineup tailor-made for an Ikea sponsorship. “That would be something,” notes Hegg with a laugh.

Below, Hegg chats with Billboard about Amon Amarth’s music, and how yoga and Guinness do a body good.

Many of your fans are polarized about how they identify Amon Amarth. Do you consider the band to be a death metal band whose song content is primarily about Vikings, or are you a Viking metal band with a Swedish melo-death style?

Personally, I always thought it was odd to characterize music based on lyrical content. If that’s all it takes to be a Viking metal band, then Iron Maiden is a Viking metal band, Led Zeppelin is a Viking metal band, Black Sabbath is a Viking metal band…

Having said that, since Viking history and mythology — and philosophy, if you want — is a big part of what Amon Amarth is and always has been, I guess it kind of makes sense. The origin of the band is obviously death metal; then we started incorporating more harmonies and melodies into the music, which has progressed up until today; we are still obviously death metal or melodic death metal, but these days, we have a lot more heavy metal influences as well. But it’s not important to me for us to be categorized. I don’t mind. It comes with the territory… What’s important is that people enjoy the music and that we are comfortable with what we are doing.

Slipknot Detail New Album 'We Are Not Your Kind' & Share 'Unsainted' Music Video: Watch

A lot of Swedish bands, particularly melo-death ones, sing in English. What’s behind this choice?

I don’t know. It’s always felt easier to me to write lyrics in English for some reason. I made a stab at writing some lyrics in Swedish, but it didn’t turn out so well. And I don’t know why, but it feels more natural to sing in English for me. For a small band from Sweden, to break in Sweden and sing in Swedish, it would make it difficult for us to break in other parts of the world, which is obviously what we wanted to do, and English was the best way to do that.

You sing in a traditional death metal vocal style — a deep, throaty growl — but everything you sing is understandable, while most death metal bands are unintelligible.

I’ve been told that I have a very different style — and I don’t know if that’s true, but I’ve always tried to be very articulate, even though I’m growling. But I think it comes from the fact that I’m actually trying to sing the growls, which is not always the case in a death metal band, where they just want to sound brutal and growly and dark, which is totally understandable… I think it is something that sets us apart from a lot of other bands.

There is a majestic quality in your storytelling, which is somewhat unusual for melo-death. Do the subjects demand a certain way of writing?

I think so. So much of what I write comes from the sagas and old Norse mythology, and I try to keep that vibe. That’s what I loved in reading them in the first place: that epic vibe, the majestic stuff. Not all of the songs are like that, but there is something about the music that lends itself to that style.

[Songwriting] remains a team effort. [The band] all shares what we’re working on . . . What I usually do, when I have lyrics or a lyric idea, I’ll send it to [lead guitarist] Olavi [Mikkonen] and [rhythm guitarist] Johan Soderberg, who write most of the music. It depends on which way you go, though; sometimes I’ll write for music they’ve sent me.

What inspired the singles from Berserker ?

“Crack the Sky” is a great song. It started out as a thing we did for fun. The pitcher for the Indians, Trevor Bauer, walks out to the plate to “The Pursuit of Vikings.” So we were talking about this and toying with the idea of writing a song and putting a lot of baseball references into the lyrics. But we liked the song and decided to keep it the way it is.

“Raven’s Flight” is based on an idea that I got from the TV series Vikings . The sons of [Viking hero] Ragnar Lothbrok go to England to avenge their father’s death. The sons are kind of enemies, but they band together to avenge the murder of their father, which I thought was pretty cool. So it’s about when they set out to do this and all the politics that go into it.

Tool Debut Two New Songs at Welcome to Rockville Festival: Watch

The opener, “Fafner’s Gold,” really stands out with the acoustic guitar intro, which then explodes with those heavy, galloping guitars.

Thank you! It’s from Norse mythology, and the story was what inspired [J.R.R.] Tolkien to write The Hobbit . It’s about two brothers who steal a treasure, and the treasure is cursed. One of the brothers takes off with the treasure and transforms into a dragon. The other brother wants the treasure back, so he tricks a man to go into the desolation where the dragon lives and kill the dragon. But after killing the dragon, the man, knowing he was tricked, returns and kills the brother. It is a tale of greed and what it does to people. It’s also about the environment: The dragon lives in desolation because he is a dragon; he has destroyed everything around him.

I understand your wife is a yoga teacher. Do you practice yoga? What are the benefits for a metal singer?

Yes and yes! There are many benefits, but it helps me with breathing and stamina and focus as a performer. I think yoga is good for everyone, it’s just a matter of finding the yoga that suits you. It’s good for many reasons, but the reason I started in the first place was because I had back problems from years of headbanging. I went to an osteopath who fixed it but recommended yoga.

You often appear onstage with a drinking horn on your belt. What are you drinking when you salute the crowd?

Guinness! Guinness is a pretty easy-going beer, especially for singers, because if you drink too much regular beer the carbonation makes you burpy, and because Guinness uses nitrogen, there’s less carbonation, so you’re less burpy. [ Laughs .] And it’s delicious and refreshing and it has iron, so it’s good for you!

Comprising 12 monstrous heavy metal anthems that bulge with irresistible melodic hooks, bursts of thrilling savagery and moments of spine-tingling dynamic drama, Berserker is the result of the huge surge of creativity and a collective desire to keep moving forward with no compromise. From the disarming melodrama and explosive riffing of opener “Fafner’s Gold” and the brutish simplicity of the rampaging “Crack The Sky” to the epic fury of “Raven’s Flight” and the grim, gritty storytelling of “Ironside” and “Skoll and Hati”, Berserker is an album full of trademark Amon Amarth bluster and bite but with every aspect of the band’s sound somehow refined, sonically enhanced and made vastly more potent, both in terms of metal oomph and emotional power. Neatly summing up the spirit behind these exhilarating new songs is the album’s semi-title track, “The Berserker At Stamford Bridge”: a visceral but vivid historical tale, recounting the Vikings last stand against the English army in 1066 and the mind-bending heroics of one axe-wielding warrior.

Showcasing an undeniable and startling upgrade for every aspect of Amon Amarth ‘s iconic sound, Berserker was recorded in Los Angeles with renowned studio guru Jay Ruston ( Anthrax/Stone Sour ) manning the controls. After recording several rounds of professional demos for the new songs (initially with fellow Swedish metal icon Peter Tägtgren and then later with Ruston himself) the band crossed the Atlantic to make final the recordings in LA, eager to take a fresh approach to the album-making process.

“For me, this is Amon Amarth 2.0,” vocalist Johan Hegg declares. “I think what we’ve done here is give ourselves the space to explore other parts of our musicality and who we are as a band. If you’re content with where you’re at, what’s the point of continuing? We always want to come up with new ideas and find new ways of doing things and to create bigger and better shows and really try to improve every aspect of what the band is. We want to try to keep growing and to do this for as long as we have the possibility to do so, because this is the best fucking job in the world.”

AMON AMARTH, CANNIBAL CORPSE, OBITUARY announce 2024 tour

amon_amarth_07.jpg

The death-metal tour of 2024 has been announced. Viking-metal mainstays Amon Amarth will be headlining a North American trek next year with support from OSDM champs  Cannibal Corpse and Obituary , as well as the new-school genre leaders Frozen Soul.

Dubbed the "Metal Crushes All Tour," the journey begins April 21st in Albuquerque and will hit both coasts of the U.S. — and several dates up in Canada — before concluding May 25th in Anaheim.

Notably, several of these shows are going down in actual arena venues, and Amon Amarth are billing Metal Crushes All as their biggest North American tour to date. That's a pretty big deal, and with such a killer lineup of top-tier death metal bands, this is already one of next year's most impressive billings.

General tickets go on sale Friday December 8th, but Revolver subscribers can get their tickets Wednesday December 6th a 3 p.m. EST with the pre-sale code "JOHNAN". Grab yours here .

Heavy metal isn’t just music: it’s a way of life. No current band embodies the spirit of metal’s immersive culture with more fervour and might than Amon Amarth: Sweden’s celebrated Viking overlords and undisputed modern masters of epic heavy metal. Today, Amon Amarth stand tall and unassailable: over 25 years into a career that has seen them evolve from humble origins in the dark, dank rehearsal rooms of their native Tumba to their current status as explosive festival headliners and one of the metal world’s most widely adored bands. Their most recent album, 2015’s Jomsviking, hit the #1 spot in Germany’s official album chart and swiftly became their most successful worldwide release to date. As a result, Amon Amarth are very much at the height of their powers as they prepare to return to action in 2019, with their biggest, boldest and most bombastic musical statement to date. Formed in 1992, Amon Amarth became modern metal greats the hard way. Ruthlessly dedicated to creating new music and taking it out on the road, the Swedes steadily built a formidable reputation as a ferocious live band and, as the years passed, were increasingly recognised for their recorded achievements too. Since the dawn of the millennium, Amon Amarth have been unstoppable. Breakthrough releases like 2006’s With Oden On Our Side and its now legendary follow-up, 2008’s Twilight Of The Thunder God, further cemented their popularity throughout the metal world, while the band’s stage show evolved with each successive tour, transforming into one of modern metal’s truly great spectacles. All of this and more has been captured in the band’s recent live DVD and documentary, The Pursuit Of Vikings: 25 Years In The Eye Of The Storm, which put a stylish seal on one of modern music’s most unlikely success stories. Meanwhile, in 2019, Amon Amarth – completed by vocalist Johan Hegg, guitarists Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg, bassist Ted Lundström and drummer Jocke Wallgren - know that expectations for their next move are at an all-time high. The excellent news is that the band’s 11th studio album, the aptly-named Berserker, is guaranteed to have all discerning metal fans punching the air with joy. Comprising 12 monstrous Viking metal anthems that bulge with irresistible melodic hooks, bursts of thrilling savagery and moments of spine-tingling dynamic drama, it’s the results of the huge surge of creativity and a collective desire to keep moving forward with no compromise. “The previous album was a concept album but we didn’t want to get into a situation where every album has to be a concept record, so this is different,” states Johan. “We wanted to step away from that and look at being a little bit more diverse, with the lyrics and everything else. I got ideas from lots of different things, from history stuff and mythological sources. Sometimes you just get something in your head and there doesn’t have to be a bigger meaning behind it – sometimes it’s just a great metal lyric that fits with a great metal song. And these are fucking great metal songs!” From the disarming melodrama and explosive riffing of opener Fafner’s Gold and the brutish simplicity of the rampaging Crack The Sky to the epic fury of Raven’s Flight and the grim, gritty storytelling of Ironside and Skoll and Hati, Berserker is an album full of trademark Amon Amarth bluster and bite, but with every aspect of the band’s sound somehow refined, sonically enhanced and made vastly more potent, both in terms of metal oomph and emotional power. Neatly summing up the spirit behind these exhilarating new songs is the album’s semi-title track, The Berserker At Stamford Bridge: a visceral but vivid historical tale, recounting the Vikings last stand against the English army in 1066 and the mind-bending heroics of one axe-wielding warrior. “The Vikings were cut off from their supply ships, so they had to retreat over Stamford Bridge, with the whole English army hard on their heels,” Johan notes. “The Vikings sent just one man out on the bridge to hold the whole English army back, about 15,000 men. So this guy, equipped with a Dane Axe, I think he killed between 40 and 70 people before they got him. And the only way they could get him was to send four guys onto the river on a raft, and they got him from beneath with spears! So it’s the perfect story for a great metal song.” Showcasing an undeniable and startling upgrade for every aspect of Amon Amarth’s iconic sound, Berserker was recorded in Los Angeles with renowned studio guru Jay Ruston (Anthrax/Stone Sour/Steel Panther) manning the controls. After recording several rounds of professional demos for the new songs (initially with fellow Swedish metal icon Peter Tägtgren and then later with Ruston himself) the band crossed the Atlantic to make final recordings in LA, eager to take a fresh approach to the album-making process. “Working with Jay was great,” Johan recalls. “The studio was amazing, and Jay’s methodology was new to us - he suggested that we record one song at a time, so that you can go back and change things and then it’s easy because everything is already set up. It was interesting, and we had a great time.” Emboldened by their recent triumphs and unerring longevity, Amon Amarth return in 2019 with Odin’s breath billowing their sails with more strength than ever before. Encapsulating everything that fans love about the band while boldly stepping into new territory, Berserker is a career-best tour-de-force from 21st century metal’s most dedicated foot-soldiers. The march to glory continues! “For me, this is Amon Amarth 2.0. I think what we’ve done here is give ourselves the space to explore other parts of our musicality and who we are as a band.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
