Emarosa (formed in 2006) is an American post-hardcore band that combines the vocal sensibilities of R&B with alternative rock, hailing from Lexington, Kentucky, U.S.

In 2006 keyboardist Jordan Stewart, drummer Lukas Koszewski, and guitarist E.R. White had a decision to make: would they attend college or start a new band – they chose the latter. Initially named Corsets Are Cages as a five piece, which included vocalist Chris Roetter, bassist Will Sowers and rhythm guitarist Madison Stolzer, following the departure of Roetter and Stolzer the band changed its name to Emarosa. The group subsequently signed with StandBy Records who issued Emarosa’s debut seven-track EP “This Is Your Way Out” in May 2007.

Former Dance Gavin Dance lead singer Jonny Craig joined Emarosa in November 2007 enabling the band to fulfil its screaming intentions. Showcasing their new singer, Emarosa issued the track “New Demo” (“Set It Off Like Napalm”) in January 2008, ahead of their sophomore record. Released in July 2008, “Relativity” earned a host of rave reviews and peaked at No. 33 on the Top Independent Albums Chart. With Kris Crummett at the production reigns, the album massively increased the band’s international exposure and was supported by extensive touring alongside Before Their Eyes, A Skylit Drive, You Me at Six, and A Day to Remember. From June to August 2009 Emarosa headlined The Artery Foundation Across the Nation Tour, before returning to the studio to work on new material.

Having signed with Rise Records, the group’s self-titled, sophomore album far surpassed the success of its predecessor. Released in June 2010, the record earned critical acclaim, later peaking at No. 69 on the Billboard 200. Proving the last album with vocalist Jonny Craig, former Tides of Man frontman Tilian Pearson filled in for the band's 2011 international supporting tour. In September 2014, following years of being without a permanent vocalist, Emarosa released their third full-length album “Versus”. Featuring new frontman Bradley Walden, once again the record earned popular reviews and charted at No. 61 on the Billboard 200.

Live reviews

Not many bands have the knack to balance R&B/Gospel inspired vocals infused with post-hardcore rhythm and melody successfully. Emarosa, however achieve this effortlessly through the addition of lead vocalist Jonny Craig in 2007. Starting as a five piece metalcore band in 2006 and before settling on the name Emarosa, the band released their debut EP “This Is Your Way Out”. After departing from his previous project (Dance Gavin Dance), Craig became a permanent member and it wasn’t long before his incredible soulful vocals assisted in the directional musical transition retaining the metalcore rhythm and riffs whilst being complimented by his smooth 90’s inspired R&B vocals, gave Emarosa their defined sound. Releasing their debut album “Relativity” in 2008 and their critically acclaimed self-titled album in 2010 whilst embarking on the tour circuit led them to touring with bands such as: A Day To Remember, Pierce The Veil, Chiodos, A Skylit Drive and Breathe Carolina and saw them win over crowds. In 2010 Craig announced his departure from the band and after numerous open auditions was replaced in 2013 with Bradley Walden.

With big boots to fill in regards to vocal style, Walden steps up to the challenge and retains that magical quality which Emarosa possess in a live capacity. Having a similar tone to his predecessor, Walden’s voice melts like butter and oozes an abundance of heart and soul while perfectly intertwining with the post-hardcore sounds. Warmly received by audiences as the new frontman, the same level of excitement still exists as the crowds roar even before the band grace the stage. That intimate connection which the fans feel radiates through the room as they play favourites such as: “A Toast to the Future Kids!”, “Live IT. Love IT. Lust IT.” and “The Past Should Stay Dead”. The energy which the band possess is infectious and permeates through the room and you can’t help but be moved. Who doesn’t want to be feel every word being sung? Emarosa have the ability to capture the hearts and souls of all who witness this musical delight.

Emarosa has managed to gain the attention of such a diehard fan base due to their ability to merge the jagged edges of their post-hardcore sounds with their melodic pop like elements.

They always deliver their performances at full force, keeping their audiences engaged with the clashing sounds of the drums, their dynamic guitar playing, and their highly emotive singing style. Emarosa’s guitarist, ER White, has a unique way of playing his guitar. He will play in your face, heavily distorted guitar power chords that are fast and dirty, and then he will switch to a clean, melodic riff that exhibits a form of ambience with the use of delay and reverb. Will Sowers’ bass playing is also highly unique as he will sometimes hold the melody of the song with his deep resonating bass lines in songs like, “I’ll Just Wait”. Bradley Scott Walden has a highly dynamic voice switching back and forth between octaves in a seemingly effortless way. His voice at times can be clean, crisp, and melodic, and at other times he will exert his voice with great force.

Emarosa often performs on a stage that has a great ambience about it. They sometimes will have lamps and chandeliers draped over the stage, as well as bright colorful lights, flashing across the stage. Their guitarists can be seen running across stage and headbanging to their more intense songs. Their singer, Bradley Scott Walden, is always inciting the audience to clap along to songs and sing along to the lyrics. He has also been known to jump into the audience to make the concert more personal for his fans.

During their performance Emarosa will play through most of their hit songs as well as draw more heavily on songs from their most recent release, Versus. If you ever get the opportunity to see Emarosa live, they will be sure to amaze you with their impeccable dynamics and their intense energy they exert into all of their performances.

Emarosa, have such a loyal following, a horde of punters who have come to this early anticipated show from the post hardcore band who blend a mixture of metal and R&B. There are hooks left right and centre, paired with some huge mammoth riffs that draw the outline for these huge songs. They perform a huge variety of their songs including the songs from their self-titled album, which made it to number 9 in the US Indie charts.

ER White, is the delivery man of their huge riffs that make the audience go crazy, causing ruckus amongst these patrons. It is as though these die-hard fans seem to know every single word to every single song. Led by Jonny Craig on his soaring vocals who commands this crowd from front to back, like a natural born leader. His range is a force to be reckoned with, not to mention the machine gun blast drums of Will Sowers, who maintains some of the most complex beats, whilst thrashing around the drum kit “Casablanca” is a worthy closer of the set.

This was easily the best night of my life. The band and crowd were full of energy, absolutely loved every second of this show. Plus the openers (Tetelestai, Of Night and Light, Rescue Dawn, Cedar Green and Chapel) were amazing!

The NSO departs for a European tour, and getting there is half the fun

Going behind the scenes with the national symphony orchestra as it prepares for a two-week, nine-city trip.

emarosa european tour

On the late side of a recent Friday night, a sold-out Kennedy Center Concert Hall crowd wound down its final round of applause, still buzzing from a particularly electric account by the National Symphony Orchestra of Beethoven’s “Eroica” symphony, as well as a skyscraping performance of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s cinematic “Violin Concerto” by Hilary Hahn.

Transitioning into a din of chatter, the audience plucked up their bags and hats, slipped on their coats and scarves, milled around in the aisles for a bit, and slowly vanished through the exits. Once the hall was clear — and after a quick backstage beer — the orchestra sprang into action.

Just outside the stage doors, a pair of temperature-controlled trailer trucks sat humming with their doors up and ramps down, awaiting a cargo of 76 precisely fitted trunks containing everything the orchestra could possibly need as it embarks on its first multi-city European tour since 2016, and its first overseas trip under maestro Gianandrea Noseda. From here, the trucks were bound for Carnegie Hall . And from there, a two-week, nine-city romp through Spain, Italy and Germany.

But first, they needed to pack.

Sharp. Witty. Thoughtful. Sign up for the Style memo newsletter.

Like many of us, an orchestra can spend years planning the details of a substantial overseas trip, only to cram all the packing into a few frenzied hours the night before departure. But unlike our habitual scramble for adapters and chargers and passports, the packing of an orchestra is a finely tuned and precisely orchestrated operation, requiring months of advance planning and permitting, a crew of nearly a dozen workers and an all-hands effort by the musicians themselves. Backstage, towering coffin-like cases await their double basses; the string section takes over a row of folding tables to pack their instruments; the red case of a rented celesta sticks out like a sore thumb, but fits snugly into the elaborate packing scheme like a Tetris block.

More than 16,000 pounds of musical instruments, musicians’ wardrobes and specialized equipment — from dollies and racks to stools to stands to Noseda’s personal podium — must get packed, shipped and accounted for at each stop along the way, traveling by plane and truck as the orchestra moves from one city to the next.

This is the seventh tour for NSO production manager Daryl Donley, who has been with the orchestra since 2000, a count that doesn’t include his planning for the orchestra’s ill-fated tour of Asia in 2020, which was grounded by the pandemic three days before it was to begin.

And it’s the fourth tour for Krysta Cihi, the NSO’s senior manager of production and orchestra operations, who helped facilitate two previous European tours as well as the orchestra’s 2017 tour of Russia.

Donley’s purview skews toward the macros — the trunks, the trucks, the carriage of cargo across a network of crews and depots. He travels mostly in advance of the arrival of the orchestra, as five pallets of orchestral cargo are trucked around Europe — sometimes by teams of two drivers to ensure the efficiency of long hauls such as the one between Madrid and Berlin .

Meanwhile, Cihi’s sizable domain is the micro. She totes around a binder that strains its binding, stuffed with hundreds of pages of forms and permits. While most international travelers are conscious of the minor “Anything to declare?” rigmarole of overseas travel, for orchestras, it’s on an entirely different scale.

“Everything inside the trunks is, to the best of our ability, itemized for the various paperwork involved,” Cihi tells me on a Zoom call with Donley from the tour’s first stop in Barcelona. “That’s all the strings and their bows, all the trumpets and their mutes. Everything.”

This itemization goes beyond a simple tally and valuation of instruments. Cihi must comply with airline rules and TSA requirements, as well as international customs rules regulating the international transport of endangered species materials — rare substances that appear with disproportionate abundance in orchestras.

In 2016, new rules and broader enforcement of regulations laid out by the 1973 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora ( CITES ) resulted in orchestras facing much more pressure to meet stringent requirements for declaring instruments. A 2020 report by the League of American Orchestras found that “export permits granted by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service doubled in 2017 from 20,000 to 40,000,” most of which were related to musical instruments.

Consider the ivory bell rings often found on bassoons, or the monitor lizard skin and whalebone sometimes used in the grips and tips of violin bows, or the Brazilian rosewood used for violins, or the Pernambuco wood used for bows, and you get a sense of how quickly these details add up, and how thick Cihi’s binder can get.

Cihi also embraces her unofficial role as “luggage magistrate” for the tour party of just over 120 travelers, including the orchestra, staff, a tour librarian, a cover conductor, a pair of tour managers, a doctor, a photographer and, if he can get his own things packed in time for his flight to Cologne, a pesky critic — all of whom will move according to a tight timetable of buses, trains and planes. Add to this the unofficial orbit of spouses, friends, family members and 60 or so patrons (who have their own dedicated itinerary from Berlin to Milan) and the NSO’s roving numbers nearly double.

“Once you’re all moving together, it definitely feels a little like you’re on a school field trip,” Cihi says. “But it’s fun being in an unusual place with 100 of your colleagues. It’s an adventure. I just hope people don’t leave their passports in their hotel safe.”

“You prepare as much as you can,” Donley says, “and then you improvise the rest of the way.”

As tends to be the case in classical music, there are limits to what can be improvised. Touring an orchestra in 2024 is a heavy lift that comes with a crushing cost.

Including the Carnegie date, expenses for this tour total around $2.1 million — a figure that includes fees for artists and crews, transportation, accommodations, per diems, cargo, promotion and other miscellaneous expenses, and which is comparable to past tour budgets for Europe (the 2016 tour cost $2.2 million) and Asia (the canceled outing to Asia was budgeted at $1.8 million).

The Style section

On the revenue side, orchestral tours are seldom paid for by fees and instead rely heavily on philanthropic gifts. To this end, the NSO’s $2.3 million of tour revenue breaks down to $1.4 million of funds raised from donors and just under $1 million in tour fees.

There’s also a substantial environmental cost that comes with orchestral touring — one that, in 2024, may draw attention to itself. The pandemic brought a halt to international orchestral tours for a solid two years, with many orchestras rethinking the intents and effects of a practice that has been a line item given for decades.

Donley cites a number of internal measures taken to lessen emissions (and costs): A set of new wardrobe trunks, for instance, can accommodate the clothing of twice as many players and reduce the total cargo by one pallet. A 10-foot chime called for in the Korngold was swapped out for a sonically similar 49-pound bell plate, with a comparably tiny footprint. Review and modifications of instruments and equipment taken on tour have brought about a 20 percent reduction in the orchestra’s total freight volume.

The NSO has also launched a partnership with the reforestation group American Forests , a conservation group that teams with organizations to reforest areas scourged by wildfires. In practice, the NSO partnership puts $7,000 toward reforesting 660 acres in northwestern Oregon , which, in theory, offsets its own emissions from the tour.

Along with the reduced freight volume, NSO Executive Director Jean Davidson says the partnership amounts to “a tangible action” to reduce the orchestra’s carbon footprint while touring. (To this end, on the home front, the NSO has recently cut the printing of paper programs and reduced its wattage 95 percent by replacing onstage canopy lighting with 60 LED fixtures.)

“Whether you’re a nonprofit or a corporate entity, it’s all of our responsibility to figure out how to run our businesses in a more environmentally friendly way,” Davidson says on a call from a tour stop in Madrid. “And what I’ve been learning is that nobody has all the answers and that many of us are trying different things to try to get it right. I think we need to have the mind-set that this is a journey that we’re on, and we need to keep learning.”

The rising costs, the exhaustive effort, the looming uncertainty, the financial burden and environmental impact that make orchestral touring such an overwhelming undertaking might easily summon questions of how worthwhile it is in the first place. But no one I spoke to in the belly of the Kennedy Center or on the horn from the road expressed any doubts about the value of bringing the show on the road — least of all Davidson.

She points to a pre-tour swell in hometown pride in the orchestra as possibly accounting for a conspicuous surge in ticket sales in January and February. But as the group has moved from one hall to the next, she has also seen the direct impact of an American orchestra with “National” in its name on those who come to listen.

“People talk about soft power and cultural diplomacy, and those words get thrown around a lot,” Davidson says. “But to me, when you’re on the ground and you see 123 artists and staff members interacting with people in all of the cities we’re in — it really does build relationships. Ones that maybe deepen the understanding of who Americans are.”

About emarosa.

Emarosa (/ɛməˈroʊsə/ EM-ə-ROH-sə) is an American post-hardcore band from Lexington, Kentucky. The band currently consists of founding members ER White (lead guitar) and Jordan Stewart (keyboards), as well as lead vocalist Bradley Walden and rhythm guitarist Marcellus Wallace. Upon forming in 2006, they released one extended play (EP) in 2007, titled This Is Your Way Out, and shortly after, the group underwent significant line-up and sound changes, dropping their heavy metal influence and leaning towards a more rock sound. The band went on to release Relativity, which features vocalist Jonny Craig and new guitarist Jonas Ladekjaer. Their eponymous second album was released on June 29, 2010, meeting their highest critical acclaim yet. After undergoing a vocalist change and a slight style change, they released their third album Versus on September 9, 2014 which peaked at No. 61 in the Billboard 200. The band released their fourth studio album, 131, on July 8, 2016 through Hopeless Records. The band has undergone several line-up changes throughout its career, with lead guitarist ER White and keyboardist Jordan Stewart being the only two remaining founding members.

ALBUM REVIEW: Sting – Emarosa

The creative LA duo known as EMAROSA , consisting of vocalist Bradley Scott and guitarist ER White , have returned post 2019’s Peach Club – a record which saw the band chart at the number two spot on the US Indie Charts and 137 on the US Billboard Charts whilst they embarked on a sold out nation-wide tour in celebration. This time however, they’v e sewn together fragments in time to create this timeless take on synth-pop. Sting delivers an honest reflection on both past relationships, future relationships and being unapologetically you; flaws and all.

Opening with Preach , we are welcomed in the warm arms of that MICHAEL JACKSON -esque “ ow!” with vintage synth tones, that crisp distinct 80s guitar sound, and cowbell galore accompanied by Scott ‘s sweet, soulful vocals that arguably compete with those of CHARLIE PUTH . It’s the complete opposite to Attention which starts off with chopped up synth lines that bring out this edge that works perfectly with Scott ’s gritty vocals as he soars through the bridge, “ D o you feel alone? / Cause I feel alone/ Cause I feel alone”. W ith the addition of the choir harmonizing as they belt out “ attention” in the background to fills out the sound, this track has a real cinematic feel.

Sting  perfectly showcases EMAROSA ‘s abilities as songwriters, such as in the MJ influences sprinkled throughout Stay between the synths and subtle nod to Beat It with the second verse’s guitar riff placed behind the synths while not being completely overpowered by them. Elsewhere, there’s Cinnamon with its feathery light vocals that give praise to Scott and his higher range accompanied by a continuous synth line throughout; the late night driver’s dance anthem in Forgiveness with its synth bass heavy chorus; and the ethereal tinted INLA .

The scene stealers of this record belong to Again , Woman and Rush however. These seem to tell this strong visual story upon listening. Again shows this magnetized relationship that moves back and forth but always ends the same; in heartbreak but you can’t help but want those good times back because when it worked it was like fireworks. Woman carries on this story with that sudden epiphany and vulnerability of honesty; breaking yourself down and realizing you deserve better than what you’ve been given even if it hurts. The message is brought beautifully forward by the chorus’ female choir-esque call and response. Now if these tracks represented denial and acceptance then Rush is that post-breakup period where you’re chasing that thrill; an adrenaline fuelled track that gets your heart pumping, a desire to chase the feelings much less the individual with the constant reminder that “ F ast love don’t last don’t you know “ .

We close this chapter with Danger ; an enticing atmosphere of desire and longing to feel something even if it ends with heartache and disaster as Scott sings in a heartfelt manner, “O ne more time I fell in love with a stranger / Just one night I was looking for danger “ . The sudden swoop of the saxophone solo towards the end pulls a sense of yearning in your heart; this realization that many of us are searching for that one night in this big, wide and often lonely world. It feels like a comfort blanket for those with a dark, honest truth staring back at themselves. This feels like a perfect send off for those wanting a heart-pulling ballad.

As a whole this record does exceptionally well by playing on the nostalgic aspect of the 80s with clear influence from MICHAEL JACKSON and TEARS FOR FEARS mixed with the modernity of artists like THE 1975 and CHARLIE PUTH and of course the obvious influence from synthwave as a whole. The guitar work displayed by White is impeccable, from catchy displays of lead hooks to emotionally driven solos that are few and far between but are impactful and memorable when there. Equally, the vocal display from Scott is stunning between the gritty soul of his deeper range and the feathery light high range he places throughout the record. Its only downfall are the short lived saxophone solos which have so much undelivered potential, yet that’s a minor inconvenience compared to the record as a whole, which delivers more than it lacks.

Rating: 9/10
