Across Italy E-Biking or Biking Adventure
“I chose each of the routes for their scenic beauty and lack of road traffic as well as for the incredible variety of food, wine, culture, and landscapes they offer.” GIOVANNI RAMACCIONI, OUR TUSCANY-BASED GUIDE for the italy e-biking or biking adventure
A nine-day tour across Italy via e-bikes or bikes – there is a lot to talk about here and a lot to experience over there!
E-Biking or Biking Across Italy?
First off, let’s talk bikes and difficulty level. E-bikes have been around since the late 1800s but it is only in the past few decades that they have become widely available. Then, during the pandemic, bicycling boomed and e-biking boomed along with it.
They have also become increasingly popular on our biking tours , for multiple reasons:
- They allow couples or friends who are not at the same fitness level to cycle together
- They have multiple gear settings, so you can get a lot of boost or none at all, depending on how much you want to workout
- They eliminate walking your bike up steep hills which, in all honesty, most of our travelers have had to do when cycling in Italy
On this tour, there are definitely hills and e-bikes are a great way to conquer them. Therefore, this tour is really for bikers of most ability levels. We expect most of our participants to be on an e-bike – and you can always turn off the electrical boost when you want. However, regular bikes are available for those of you into your riding!
The Route Across Italy
Not only is this nine-day tour (eight days of riding) take us across Italy, but it takes us across one of the most beautiful areas of Italy. Centered on the region of Tuscany, we actually start on the beautiful Adriatic coast, go through the heart of Tuscany, and end on a peninsula sticking out into the Tyrrhenian Sea, which connects to the Mediterranean.
We meet in the seaside resort town of Fano on the Adriatic coast, which still has ruins from its Roman origins. We visit amazing cities such as Urbino, Città di Castello (where our guide Giovanni lives), Cortona of Under the Tuscan Sun fame, and Montepulciano. We end in a small seaside town on the slopes of Monte Argentario on the opposite coast. We move each day except for two overnights in Montepulciano, one of the most amazing cities in Italy. Our routes throughout are designed to minimize traffic and maximize scenery.
The Food and Wine
The food and wine in all of Italy is superb but this area is known as both a major wine region and a bread basket. We’ll enjoy seafood at both the start and end of the tour. We’ll taste the local pecorino cheese in Pienza and the Tuscan-style pici pasta . We’ll taste the Montepulicano, Brunello di Montalcino, and other wines sourced from vineyards we pass en route.
Join Us On Our Across Italy E-Biking or Biking Adventure
We love this area of Italy and know you will too. It is a big commitment of nine days but well worth the investment! Join our May 13 – 21 pubic tour in 2023 to meet other cyclists and Italy fans or gather your own group of eight for a private tour on a date of your choosing.

Day 1: FANO to URBINO
You can arrive to the seaside resort town the day before to enjoy the area, explore the ancient Roman ruins, and prepare for our tour. Our Guides will meet you in the morning for introductions and to pair you with your rental e-bike or standard bike. Most of today's ride is relatively flat, taking place on the land that extends from the coastal beach as we move inward and across Italy. Near the end, there will be a steep rise to the city of Urbino, which will either be a serious workout on a standard bike or, if you have elected to rent an e-bike, a joy as you get that electric boost. Make sure to turn around and take in the expansive views of the coast behind you. Urbino is a magnificent medieval and renaissance town - a place of architectural and artistic masterpieces. After you shower you can choose to visit Mondavio, the Palace of the Duke of Urbino, or simply hang out in the historic center.
Total Distance: 67 KM
Day 2: URBINO to SANSEPOLCRO
Today in the morning it is mostly small rolling hills as we make our way to the medieval town of Sant'Angelo in Vado, , before we descend down to the Val Tiberina. We will pass beautiful countryside and small towns, including the medieval S. Angelo in Vado, a great place to park your bike to wander the streets and perhaps grab an early lunch. It is then a long uphill climb up the Appenines to the Bocca Trabaria pass (again, that electric boost!) before we head down to the Val Tiberina, with an optional stop at the Hermitage in Lamoli on the way. We reach our valley town of Sansepolcro, a fantastic small city with one of the most beautiful Corsos (main street laid out by the Romans) in the region. Our guide, Giovanni, has his base here. Note: It is possible we will stay in the nearby Citta di Castello (City of the Castle), where Giovanni lives, depending on hotel availability.
Total Distance: 68 KM
Day 3: SANSEPOLCRO to CORTONA
Today we cycle over another small range of the Appenine Mountains, the long set of mountains running along the eastern side of Italy from north to south. We have a long gradual rise at first to top the mountains and then an equally long descent, with views of Lake Trasimeno and the Val di Chiana as you go. Finally, we face a sharp uphill climb to the hillside city of Cortona. Cortona, of course, is famous as the site of the book and move Under the Tuscan Sun. It is a lovely city with a fantastic central historic area and a perfect place to enjoy a coffee or glass of wine after the ride. Cortona is our base for the night and is the start of our time in what we consider the heart of Italy.
Total Distance: 72 KM
Day 4: CORTONA to PIENZA
Today is a day dominated by hill towns. We start with a ride down from the hilltop city of Cortona. We then have a relatively flat to rolling section across beautiful plans and utilizing a paved bicycle path. It is then up, up again to the small city of Torrita, once a fortified city that protected Siena, with remains of its walls still visible. The small historical center is well worth walking around and is a good place for lunch. We then continue on to the town of Pienza, the town planned by Pope Pius II with its balcony looking over the valley below and home to pici pasta and pecorino cheese. Our hotel for the night has an excellent garden overlooking the valley below and is a superb spot for enjoying a glass of wine as the sun sets.
Distance: 60 KM
Day 5: LOOP RIDE OR REST DAY
If you choose, you can opt to rest your legs, sleep in late, and wander the small streets of Pienza. Or you can hop back on your bike / e-bike to do a loop ride through what is the most beautiful region of Tuscany, one of the most beautiful regions of Italy. Our ride today is a loop taking us from Pienza to Montepulciano to the small village of Monticchiello and back to Pienza. And we will tempt you at every step of the way. Outside Pienza we'll do a tasting of Pecorino cheese. Montepulciano is one of the most well-known villages of Italy and is famous for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wine; we'll have a formal wine tasting in an ancient wine cellar beneath the city. In Monticchiello you can stop for lunch at one of several restaurants with verandas overlooking the valley below. All this takes place in and above the Val d'Orcia, which is classic Tuscany postcard perfect. And as an option, you can continue to the town of Bagno Vignoni, famous for its Roman-era baths heated by local hot springs. Dinner tonight is on your own in Pienza.
Total Distance: 56 KM
Day 6: PIENZA to RELAIS SAN LORENZO (OPTION SANTA FIORA)
Today we engage in a shorter but epic ride on the slopes of the ex-volcano Mt Amiata, passing through olive groves and durum wheat fields to the chestnut woods of Amiata. Monte Amiata is an important part of Tuscany but less well known. It is a dormant volcanic mountain that separates the Val d'Orcia where we were this morning from the Maremma area where we are headed tomorrow. The Amiata area is rural and less touristed than other, more famous regions in Tuscany. There is a good deal of up and down today and, by this point, you will likely be loving your e-bike's electric charge assist. We stop early in part because our destination is the Relais San Lorenzo , a beautiful hotel located in the country with an incredible outdoor swimming pool. This is a great day to have a short ride to luxuriate in the hotel. However, you can always opt to continue on to nearby Santa Fiora, a small village of only 2,500 people. It is perched on the slopes of Monte Amiata, has a walkable city center, and you can enjoy the sounds of the Fiora River running through. Arriving in town, you'll want to spend an hour or so just wandering and enjoying real Italy. One stop to make is the gardens around the local peschiera, a reservoir for trout breeding generally created in Roman times.
Total Distance: 43 KM
Day 7: RELAIS SAN LORENZO to SOVANA
There are a few uphills today but in total the downhills are twice the elevation loss as the uphill gains. We are heading back down and towards the western coast of Italy. By the time we reach the area of Maremma, the riding is flat. Maremma is the most southwestern portion of Tuscany and was previously marshlands until it was ordered drained by Ferdinando I de' Medici. The area is known today for its cattle and horse raising but it was in ancient times home to the Etruscans, a national of city-states that dominated what is now Italy in the 8th to 5th centuries BCE. (The Romans called them the Tyrrhenians, hence the name of the sea to which we are heading.) On our route we'll have the opportunity to soak in the hot springs of Saturnia, try a glass of the local Morellino di Scansano red wine or the Bianco di Pitigliano white wine, and walk the remains of city walls laid out by the Etruscians in Pitigliano. Our destination is the town of Sovana, listed as "one of the most beautiful villages of Italy."
Total Distance: 53 KM
Day 8: SOVANA to PORTO ERCOLE
The first part of our ride day has a few distinct but moderate ups and downs, follwed by a long downhill to the coast. On our route we'll pass through towns such as Manciano and Capalbio where you can stop for a coffee or gelato. As we reach the coast, the riding flattens out and we head out on a flat isthmus that eventually reaches the peninsula on which stands Monte Argenario, surrounded by the Terrenian Sea. Upon arrival, you can check in, shower, and go for a nice exploratory walk in the old town of our home for the night, Porto Ercole, and along the harbor. Tonight is our final dinner together and we will celebrate our accomplishment of riding across Italy from coast to coast!
Total Distance: 77 KM
Day 9: CIAO CIAO!
We will have breakfast together and say our goodbyes. With a short shuttle to the local train station, you are free to continue your journey or start on your road home, with incredible memories stored away.
Trip Accommodations
The hotels on this tour will depend on the number of people participating in the public or private tour. For small tours of eight or so people, we have the ability to choose smaller accommodations. For larger tours, we focus on amazing hotels both in cities and in the countryside.
Arrival & Departure
We will meet at a designated hotel in Fano on the eastern coast of Italy at 9:30 AM on the first day. The easiest way to reach Fano is to fly to the major airport of Bologna (two to 2.5 hours by train to Fano), Florence (three to four hours), or Rome (4.5 to five hours) and take a train from there to Fano, where the station is conveniently in the center of town. Our suggestion is to fly into one of these cities and spend a night or two before the tour and then to arrive in Fano the day before we meet.
We depart after breakfast from Porto Ercole with a 15-minute shuttle to the nearby train station. From there you can reach Florence (3.5 hours) or Rome (two to 2.5 hours), the two preferred departure airports.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
- Two Zephyr guides (one local) accompany each trip, with a third added as necessary.
- Double occupancy lodging is included. If you are traveling solo, you may ask us to find a traveler to share a room with you but will need to pay a single supplement to have your own room if we cannot match you.
- Six dinners (one dinner on your own in the town of Pienza) and all breakfasts are included. Gratuity for these meals is also included. In general, we leave lunches open so that you have time to explore and enjoy the local flavors en route.
- All your transportation is included once you meet your guides on the first day.
- All group activities are included.
- NOT INCLUDED Beverages, desserts, lunches, one dinner, gratuities to your guides, personal expenses, bike rentals, and travel to and from the destination.
Best time to visit
We like the shoulder seasons of spring (April through June) and fall (September and October) because there are fewer tourists and more pleasant temperatures than in the months of July and August. You will have greener fields and more daylight in the May through June time frame but ripe vineyards and golden wheat fields in the fall.
Extending your vacation
We definitely recommend arriving to Fano one day early for the 9:30 AM start on our first tour day. It can be really nice to spend a night or two in your airport arrival city of Bologna, Florence, or Rome. If you have more time than that . .. well, Italy has so much to offer. A major decision is whether to travel in Italy by train (best for the larger cities) or car (better for rural areas). We love the nearby city of Siena and the fun hilltop towns of Umbria.
Ability Level
This Adventure is rated Moderate due primarily to the planned use of e-bikes. E-bikes are great and have some awesome advantages. They turn the hills of this route into very manageable aspects of the ride. If you wish to test yourself, however, you are more than welcome to ride a standard hybrid or road bike!
Type of people who will enjoy this tour
This adventure is ideal for those who like to exercise on vacation but are not up for climbing big hills on a bicycle. We expect some of our travelers to have been to Italy before and possibly even to a few of the towns on this tour - but this is a great tour to get you Italy fans into areas you would never otherwise visit.
Changes to Your Itinerary
While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience.

Remember to don your VR headsets at each stop, and once you’ve arrived back at the starting point, the choice is yours to transfer back to your hotel or grab a well-earned lunch at a nearby restaurant.

Dawn at the Colosseum
You’ll meet your group at the meeting point early in the morning for a brief introduction to your e-bike. These high-quality bikes are easy to ride, even if you’re not an experienced cyclist, and will allow you to check out the city’s many iconic highlights before the crowds hit the streets.
With anticipation building, you’ll hop on straight away and embark on a short ride to the Colosseum. Marvel at its grandeur, free from the usual daytime tourists, and delve into the rich history of the amphitheater as brought to life by your knowledgeable guide. You’ll also don your VR headsets to admire what the Colosseum looked like in its prime.
Piazza Venezia and Piazza Navona
Next, follow your guide along the Via dei Fori Imperiali (Road of the Imperial Forums) to Piazza Venezia (Venice Square). Along the way, admire the Arch of Constantine, one of Rome's best-preserved triumphal arches, and the Imperial Forums, which date back as far as 46 BC. Take a moment to check out Venice Square's impressive buildings and statues, which will look exceptional in the tranquil morning hours, before continuing to Piazza Navona.
Also known as Navona Square, this is arguably the most beautiful of Rome’s squares, and in the early morning, you’ll have the freedom to admire its magnificent fountains and Baroque Roman architecture without the crowds.
The Pantheon
The next part of your Rome e-biking tour takes you to the Pantheon, a marvelously preserved ancient Roman monument. The soft morning light lends a mystical aura to its grand facade, and as you put on the VR headsets, you'll be shown a Pantheon untouched by time, granting you a newfound appreciation for this architectural masterpiece.
Trastevere and Capitoline Hill
Your e-bike tour then continues past the Campo dei Fiori, a vibrant marketplace that'll only just be waking up for the day ahead, and through the picturesque streets of Trastevere, a neighborhood known for its bohemian vibe and ivy-clad houses. Then, climb up to Capitoline Hill for a grand view of the cityscape sprawling before you continue past the ancient Roman chariot-racing stadium of Circus Maximus. Along the way, your guide will point out other interesting landmarks and hidden relics, but before you know it, you'll find yourself returning to the starting point, energized and invigorated, just as the city around you stirs to life.

Fantastic Tour of Rome
My wife and I really enjoyed the tour of Rome from start to finish. We came to Italy for a 2 week vacation celebrating her 40th birthday and started the trip with a few days in Rome. She loves biking and I'm a big history buff so naturally this was something we both wanted to consider. Ed was our tour guide and he took us along various parts of the city and kept the rides brisk but relaxed and was incredibly informative with the historical information. He was also happy to recommend some great dining spots along the way as well. We had a great time on this tour and I can't recommend it enough. It was well worth the price of admission. Cheers!

Frequently Asked Questions
What to bring?
We will be outside the entire time, so make sure to bring a bottle of water and sunscreen in summer.
Do we go inside the Colosseum?
This e-bike tour does not include entry to the Colosseum. After seeing it from the outside, you'll likely want to explore the amazing interior, so book a Colosseum Arena Floor tour for an amazing chance to see the Colosseum like a gladiator.
Does this tour include lunch?
No, lunch is not included on this e-bike tour. But you will cycle through the Trastevere neighborhood that has a great food scene. Book our Trastevere Local Food Tour to come back and enjoy authentic Italian food and wine in the evening.
What kind of terrain will we be riding on?
Beautiful cobblestoned streets are part of what makes Rome so timeless and nostalgic, but it also means that we're in for a bit of a bumpy ride in places! You won't be jostled the entire tour, but keep in mind that some of the route is uneven.
What if it rains?
This tour usually runs rain or shine. If your guide deems the weather conditions unsafe for bike riding, the tour will be canceled for your own safety. We will do our best to reschedule you for another tour or offer you a full refund. We understand your time in Rome is limited, and we want you to experience as much as you can!
What should I wear?
Wear light, comfortable, and sporty clothes in the summer and always wear comfortable shoes or sneakers.
Is this tour run by The Tour Guy?
No, this tour is operated by one of our trusted and vetted partners in Rome.
Can I bring my kids, and do I have to pay for them?
Yes, everyone is welcome on our Rome e-biking tour. Infants under 5 years of age are free and will sit in a child seat attached to their parent's bike. Children under 10 years are entitled to a discount. Please choose accordingly when booking. We will accommodate your kids according to their cycling capacities.

E-Bike Cycling Tours in Italy
If you think you can’t tackle the hills of the beautiful area of your choice, or in case you just want to enjoy the scenery without (too much) sweating, a good E-Bike might be the right solution for you!
On an increasing number of our self-guided tours (and as well for some small group cycling adventures) Genius Loci Travel now offers fantastic E-bikes. These bikes will helping you to get you up and over some steeper hills (or help you to keep up with faster friends!) and allow you to cover longer distances without arriving exhausted at your final destination.
This means that the pleasure of touring beautiful, but steep, areas, such as the stunning Amalfi Coast, are now within reach for people of varying fitness and experience levels.
If you don’t book a tour to the place where you really want to go biking because you think it’s too difficult for you, an E-bike can help you make this kind of active vacation a reality! Go for it!
Carefully selected routes
As we don’t want our clients to be ‘stuck’ somewhere with an empty battery, we have carefully selected – and tested – the routes of our E-bike tours, to make sure that with a ‘normal’ usage the battery life will last at least (!) until the arrival in your hotel. Cycling through a mountainous area of course needs more assistance, and ‘drains’ the battery a lot, while in flat areas you can cycle (almost) without a battery).
But be sure that for any of our selected routes, with our high-end E-bikes, equipped with Bosch battery packs, you can easily reach your accommodation every night!
One of our bestselling tours – with a number of steeper hills – is our classic ‘ Amalfi Coast Cycling ‘, tour. This tour becomes a leisurely ride with an E-bike. Moreover, with an E-bike you can easily make a number of great detours, and take in awesome hidden panoramas, visit wonderful Ravello, the backroads of Vietri, or discover the secret vineyards of Tramonti.
Also a shorter, 3-nights/4-day special centre-based special Amalfi Coast E-Bike tour is available. This tour is especially designed for the rides with an E-Bike. A longer version of this special E-Bike tour includes also the Sorrento Peninsula – cycling towards the very tip, face-to-face with Capri.
Another stunning area is the Cilento National Park , where we can offer several short, 3- or 4-day trips, especially designed for the E-Bike. As well do we offer some more challenging rides, like the tour from ‘ Paestum into the Cilento National Park ‘ , a beautiful ride to explore the stunning natural and cultural treasures of southern Campania, which will take you through a largely unknown part of southern Italy, with astunning coastline and awesome mountain scenery.
And last but not least: ask about our short trips in ISCHIA , the green island!
For small groups we offer the unique challenge of cycling right across Italy – between two famous cycling destinations, Puglia and the Amalfi Coast. From beautiful Puglia you’ll cycle through the relatively unknown Basilicata and the unspoilt Cilento National Park, ending on the popular Amalfi Coast.
More about (our) E-Bikes
An E-bike (sometimes called pedelec) is a bicycle which gives you ‘assistance’ while you pedal. They look like a conventional bike, but with the addition of a small electric motor and a battery pack.
The bikes can be ‘normal’ city bikes, hybrid bikes (perfect for most of our tours), but also mountain bikes (and recently even some electric road bikes have been produced).
Our bikes support you while pedaling , at adjustable assistance levels. So yes, you do have to cycle yourself (!), so you do get your exercise, as these bikes don’t give you assistance in case you don’t pedal (they are not electric scooters or motorcycles).
The assistance level of course influences the battery life (the more assistance, the more energy you use), but with the modern batteries on our bikes, all of our carefully planned routes can be done easily without running out of power (and even in the unlikely case that the battery runs out of power, you can keep riding – or call our assistance, as it is hard work with the extra weight ….)
Our E-bikes will only ‘push’ you up to a speed of 25 km./h. (legal requirement), the ideal speed to soak in the countryside. And pedaling up a hill like you are in the plain is a unique experience!

E-bike Tour In Italy: Highlights of An Affordable, Sustainable Cycling Vacation (You’re Invited!)
Imagine you want to take a trip through the Italian countryside. You could always rent a car and drive through Tuscany – but you’re aiming for something a bit more adventurous, a bit less expected. So instead, you start looking into an e-bike tour in Italy’s Marche region.
And instead of planning it yourself, and relying on hours of research and your best guess to try to avoid tourist traps, you ask your very outdoorsy Italian friend, Marco, to set you up.
Marco, a smiling, energetic 40-something with a dark beard, recently moved back to his hometown in Italy’s under-the-radar Marche region. (A gem of Central Italy, Marche is just over the Apennine Mountains from Tuscany and Umbria.)
And Marco and his wife, Silvia, happen to have a garage full of shiny new Italian mountain bikes (and e-bikes, thankfully), ready to lend to their friends.
They also know all the best hidden trails, the best view points, the local farmers with the best stories to tell, and the country grandmothers who will happily invite you in for a homemade lunch.
All you have to do is show up. Book your ticket to Italy, and then a train to the 1,000-year-old mountain town of Fabriano. Marco and Silvia will take care of the rest.
I didn’t know that’s what I was signing up for when I said yes to this trip with very small tour company, Basecamp523 , but that’s exactly what it felt like.
It felt like we had local friends who planned the perfect trip they would want to take, stringing together a list of stops we never would have found on our own. (Many of which no other tourists seemed to know about, since we didn’t see a single one for the entire week!)
What exactly is this Italian bike trip?
Marco calls the trip “ Ruralmente ,” which means “rurally” in English. It’s a one-week, supported and guided bike trip covering about 90 miles (145 kilometers), from the central mountains to the East coast of Italy, with plenty of gastronomic and artisanal stops along the way. (Think: wine, olive oil and honey tastings, visits to medieval towns, and a workshop in the ancient local art of paper making. A classic European cycling holiday, with just the right twists.)
Those 90 miles break down to anywhere from 8 to 28 miles a day (13 to 45 km). And if that sounds like a lot to you, don’t stop reading yet! A couple of things made this particular Italian bike trip a lot less intimidating:
“Supported” means you don’t have to carry your luggage on your bike. A car shuttles everyone’s bags from one hotel to the next every day, while you ride.
“Bike trip” means either on a mountain bike , if you want to peddle your heart out, or an electric bike ! The e-bike option is fantastic if you still want to work your legs, but would like to have a backup plan, too… since you’re on vacation, after all. Basecamp will provide either one – brand new and perfectly maintained. (No need to ship your bike across an ocean.)
The Italians called the standard mountain bikes “muscular” bikes, which I found adorable. And I was more than happy to turn them down in favor of e-bike ease.
Pssst … Are you busy in September?

What’s the catch? (Affordability)
This trip was almost shockingly affordable compared with other great bike tours in Italy. (And especially compared with multi-day e-bike tours in Italy, which often cost even more.)
There are a couple of reasons for the relatively lower price tag. One is that the Marche region is much more under the radar than very similar regions. (Like Tuscany – a very popular bike trip destination, for rolling hills and wine tasting. Scroll through the photos below and you’ll see the same.) Marche has the nickname “the poor man’s Tuscany,” which is a bit insulting, but definitely gets the idea across.
The second reason is that, while the accommodations, food and equipment were all excellent, Marco didn’t design this to be a “luxury” bike tour, as many trips are. He designed it to be adventurous , with a focus on local hospitality . That kind of travel is better for the local economy, less resource-intense and (in Marche, at least) less expensive. Win-win-win, in my book!
Now, here’s my full log of our trip:
Day 1: Biking 17 miles from Fabriano into the mountains
It was just the end of the first day when I realized this bike trip in Italy wasn’t going to feel like most group trips I’d been on. We’d pedaled 17 miles, or 28 km – an “easy start” sort of day, designed to warm up our legs. (And I was already overwhelmed with gratitude that Emanuele, my Milanese husband and videographer, had insisted we go for the e-bikes.)
We’d started the morning in the medieval town of Fabriano, which has been famous for at least eight centuries for its artisan paper makers. And we were ending the day with an Aperol Spritz, served pool-side at a small resort in the mountains.
Artisan Paper Making in Fabriano
As every Italian told me before this trip, you can’t visit Fabriano without visiting its famous paper making museum . Well, Marco and Silvia had a different idea – they wanted us to do something more unique.
So before we got set up with our e-bikes on Day 1, we spent an hour with Sandro Tiberi, a master paper maker. Sandro regaled us with the history of Fabriano’s paper industry, and his own story working in that industry for decades, before he started his own workshop. That’s where we created our own sheets of paper the old-fashioned way – except made of out of recycled cotton and bamboo fabric.
Fun Fact: That’s one reason why natural fabrics that are 100% one fiber (as opposed to cotton-poly blends, for example) make for more eco-friendly clothing choices. Those blended fabrics can’t be recycled or upcycled into paper or anything else. Check out my guide to sustainable clothing brands for more info!
The reason they sent us here, instead of the museum? As Marco put it:
“This is the kind of thing that makes a town stay alive, especially in inland Italy, where towns are disappearing.” Marco – Basecamp523 founder & Guide
Our first big stop once we started pedaling showed us exactly that. We visited the abandoned town of San Cristoforo , which Marco said lost its last inhabitants about six years ago.
That depopulation is happening in so many small towns in rural Italy, and it’s the reason why it feels so significant to support the small businesses in these places.
It’s a matter of life or death for communities, and for their traditions.
Because we’ve all seen the click-bait headlines about Italian towns selling villas for 1 euro, right? That’s the last resort.
An earlier solution is supporting new enterprises, like Sandro’s paper business, a creative and authentic way to show off centuries of tradition, and give artists and other locals a job that they don’t have to move to Milan or Germany or the US for.
Mass tourism in Italy doesn’t normally give a cent to rural communities, but this trip clearly does.
The Road Less Traveled (and harder to find)
We’re no rookies to Italian travel planning – I lived in Milan for three years, and Emanuele did for 30 – and we get around a lot every time we go back for a visit. But still, at the end of the day, as I looked around, at the dramatic karst mountains jutting up behind the quiet pool, where the only other guests were one or two Italian couples on local get-aways, I kept thinking that I never would have picked this spot out on the map.
And I had no idea what to expect in this part of the Italian peninsula.
Tourism in this region of Italy – Le Marche – is overwhelmingly concentrated on the coastlines, and that’s something Marco and Silvia say they’re trying to balance out.
Marche isn’t as famous outside of Italy as other coastal destinations – like Liguria (home of the Cinque Terre), Sicily, Sardinia, or the Amalfi Coast. Within Italy, though, it’s a different story. Marche is still a major destination – known for its white pebbled beaches, turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea, sunshine, and seafood.
But the interior of the Marche region is a different world from the beach towns. Just a few miles from the beach, stunning mountains jut up, with shocking white stone edges and thick forests.
We rode our bikes past the line of tourists waiting to enter Le Grotte di Frasassi – the second largest cave in Europe. (We didn’t stop – Marco deems it too touristy for this adventure.)
And after grimacing at the line as we glided by, we hardly saw another tourist for the rest of the week. Truly.
Instead of the famous caves, we stopped for lunch at a secret spot Marco knows on the Sentito River, where Silvia had stashed a cooler in the bushes with our homemade lunch. We changed into our swim suits behind a tree and took a very refreshing dip in the river before diving into our farro salads.
As we relaxed by the water, Marco pulled a small camping stove and silver moka coffee pot from his backpack. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of Italians so excited to see someone making coffee.
After lunch, a short hike led us up to the kind of place I can’t believe I’ve never heard of. (And as my legs slowly remembered how to walk uphill, I couldn’t believe it was only Day 1, either.)
Il Santuario della Madonna di Frasassi (the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Frasassi) is a chapel and hermits’ outpost.
It was carved into the stone on the side of the mountain in the 800s. (That’s not a typo, there’s no 1 missing. While the most dramatic part of the sanctuary was finished in 1828, it’s been used by religious hermits for a millennium.)
It was just sitting there, pale gray and shiny, cooled by the air from another cave behind the chapel.
And a few miles beyond, the mountains soften out into those gorgeous hillsides, just like what you see on postcards from Tuscany.
Compared to the American West, where landscapes go on for hundreds of miles, one of the best things about traveling in Italy is how little distance you need to cover to go from seaside, to dramatic mountains, to soft hills. The landscape is as efficient as it is beautiful.
Hotel, Pool Time & a Very Local Dinner
After a few more easy kilometers, we checked into our hotel for the night – the Hotel Le Grotte . (This was the resort where we sipped Aperol Spritzs by the pool, as I mentioned above.)
In Italy’s busiest tourist season, July and August , it’ll be a busy place. But even in late June it was blissfully quiet. (Marco plans this trip when it’s still cool enough to actually enjoy biking under the sun, and to avoid the crowds of the high season.)
Dinner was a fantastic spread at an agriturismo – an Italian farm stay, where you can sleep in what are usually rustic accommodations, and eat massive portions of truly local foods – made mostly with ingredients grown on the farm itself and nearby.
We went to bed happy and exhausted.
Day 2: The longest, most beautiful bike ride through the Italian countryside
I made it to the end of Day 2 so exhausted I could hardly pick up my pen to write about the day. We covered 28 miles, or 45 km. And this was the day that I realized the profound, immense value of a good e-bike.
Why this trip made me an e-bike convert:
The e-bikes Marco set us up with were brand new, and let me tell you, they’re worth their weight in gold. (This is the exact $3,000 model we used, which I fell a little bit in love with.)
Our electric bikes had four modes:
- You can leave the electric part turned off, and just pedal like a regular bike. In that case, you’ll have fewer gears than a normal mountain bike would, and it’s a bit heavier, but it’s an option.
- Eco mode: This is the lowest level of support, the extra push from the motor is so subtle you hardly even feel it. The battery also lasts the longest with this mode.
- Trail mode: Level two, you’ll feel slightly more e-kick. It’s not a motorcycle or anything; it just feels like every time you pedal, you get more than you expect.
- Boost mode: For me, Boost is for when I’m pedaling up a long hill, and suddenly it goes from feeling like a nice, satisfying bit of effort (even in Trail mode), to just not fun anymore. Boost makes it fun again.
The higher levels burn through your e-bike’s battery faster, so Marco cautioned us to use Boost sparingly. (But honestly, I boosted absolutely whenever I felt like it and always had more than half of my battery left at the end of the day.)
Body weight is a factor, too, so heavier people will burn through more battery. (But at 195 pounds, Emanuele also always finished the day with a comfortable amount of battery life.)
You still need to have a moderate level of fitness for this trip, that’s for sure. Even on an e-bike, riding 30 miles a day is still a good workout!
But the e-bike makes it a lot less intimidating, even for first-time mountain bikers, like me!
Farmhouse lunch & beekeeping lesson
Luckily, we broke up a long day of pedaling today with a fantastic, leisurely lunch prepared just for us by a farm family. (It’s a working farm, not a restaurant, so it’s not somewhere we would have been able to eat on our own. They cooked just for us.)
It was absolutely down-home cooking, and one of my favorite meals of the trip, with multiple (sometimes confusing) courses :
- Pasta all’Amatriciana – a traditional, spicy kind of tomato sauce with Pecorino Romano cheese and guanciale (a type of cured pork)
- A selection of grilled meats that were entirely fantastic. (And I’m a very selective meat eater, mostly for climate reasons (scroll to #5 on that article). So if I’m saying that, it means they’re worth it!)
- Lightly breaded, pan-fried vegetables that I wish I’d been able to get the recipe for. (I asked, but I got the idea it was a family secret.)
- Fruit. (Which also makes an appearance in my wildly popular article about why Italians are relatively thin , despite eating all these decadent courses.)
- Homemade tiramisù.
Oh, and beer and wine on the table – drink as much or little as you think you should, knowing you’ll still have a few more miles to pedal later in the day.
After lunch, the actual beekeeping experience was a unique addition to the trip. We got all suited up in protective suits, and Andrea, the beekeeper, showed us his entire daily process to check on the bees. We each had a chance to pull a tray of live bees out of hive.
Bees and their royal jelly.
Back in the e-saddle
Then we got back on our bikes, to ride just a few more easy miles. It was one of my favorite rides of the entire trip, as we crossed farm fields bathed in absolutely gorgeous early evening light.
We decided it was a perfect spot for Emanuele to fly his drone , and capture some aerial shots on the way to our country hotel.
Everything was fine until…
He launched the drone and everything was going just fine… until suddenly it wasn’t. It was following us along the white gravel road, when it failed to dodge some trees. I looked up to check where it was just as it happened… and saw our $1,000+ camera tumble down through the branches.
Somehow , I convinced Emanuele not to hurl himself down the steep hill from the road to rescue it. I went instead, slowly and carefully making the near vertical descent into the farmer’s field, and then fighting my way through the bushes to pull it out.
As I climbed back up to the road, drone in one hand, clinging to handfuls of earth with the other, covered in scratches and brambles, I saw a middle-aged man riding by on his Vespa, with a helmet on his head and a calm expression on his face. He looked healthy, relaxed, and in no rush to get to where he was going.
It felt like such an idyllic moment of rural Italian life that I’d thought might not exist anymore. But there it was, picturesque like a movie, but right in front of me.
I brushed myself off, we inspected the drone – luckily, nothing was broken beyond repair – and we continued our relaxing, Golden Hour ride.
[ Related: We’ve definitely had worse drone mess-ups! Read about this one on a plastic-free sailing trip in Greece , if you want a laugh… or a cry.]
One of my favorite agriturismi
That night, we stayed in one of my favorite properties of the trip – Piagge del Sole , a classic country farmhouse converted to a rural agriturismo. ( Agriturismi is the plural of agriturismo in Italian.)
It’s perched on a hill with gorgeous views all around, and a pool in the backyard. The perfect spot to relax after a long ride.
We also ate dinner here (gnocchi with duck and tomato sauce, a local speciality). I was a bit too relaxed for much food photography, but this was the view – quite literally from the patio where we ate:
PIC – views from Piagge del Sole. Pool
Day 3: The foodie day – oil, wine and grandma’s cooking
Ahh, Day Three gave us a much-needed rest for our legs, biking only 8 miles / 13 km. (Trust me, it’ll feel like nothing after 45km!) And covering such little ground gave us lots time to soak up a few of the gastronomic gifts the area has to offer.
We started with a visit to a sustainable olive farmer named Giorgio.
You’ve probably done a wine tasting before, right? Well, how about an olive oil tasting?
Giorgio led us through an entire tasting lesson, explaining how to sample oils, how to recognize a good one, and which varieties to pair with different foods.
[ Stay tuned! This was such a fascinating experience that I’ll be writing a separate post on what I learned about how to taste olive oil.]
His business, called Colle Nobile , is a family farm, where you can easily see every tree from one view point. Giorgio purposefully keeps it small, because he wants to do something different – namely making sustainable farmed, “mono-cultivar” olive oils . That means every bottle contains oil from just one specific variety of olive tree, while most oils are a blend.
“It’s the concept of wine, transported to olive oil.” Giorgio
And this particular kind of oil is hyper-local. Of the four varieties Giorgio grows, three of them are native to and grow only here, in the Marche region.
Although they practice organic farming techniques , Colle Nobile isn’t yet certified organic. That’s a familiar story I’ve seen played out with tons of small businesses around the world. Getting certified takes time and money, and when your business has just three employees, the paperwork probably won’t be the first thing on your to-do list.
While we were busy learning about oil, Giorgio’s mother, Elena, was preparing lunch.
And let me tell you, it was another special one. Every dish was purposefully chosen to pair with the fresh oils and let their flavor shine. (This was another meal that isn’t available to most tourists . The Nobile family doesn’t run a restaurant, just a picnic table in the backyard of their family home.)
This meatless meal was purposefully designed to be light enough to highlight the flavor of the olive oils. (And the chocolates are made with oil from the olive groves behind us.)
From Olive Oil to Wine
After our olive oil afternoon, we checked into a very different kind of agriturismo. While most agriturismi I’ve stayed in have a slightly rustic, farmhouse vibe, Tenuta San Marcello goes for a more elegant take on the classic Italian farm stay. (Which made sense, after I learned that the couple that founded the place had lived in Milan for years. They brought some of the big city’s dressed-up vibes.)
The property has another gorgeous pool, with an enviable view over the valley below. But we ended up spending so much time at the oil tasting that we didn’t have time to take advantage of the pool before it was wine tasting time. (Just another reason to go back…)
3,000 Years of Wine Making
Before the tasting itself, one of the owners, Massimo, showed us around the property and explained that people have been producing wine in these hills for 3,000 years. The geology of the region, with limestone and layers of clay, makes it similar to Burgundy , one of France’s most famous wine regions.
Massimo described wine making as “just the oldest way to preserve must,” which is essentially grape juice.
“It’s like what farmers do with milk, by making cheese. If we had tomatoes, we’d make tomato sauce. But we have grapes, so we make wine.” Massimo, Tenuta San Marcello vineyard & Winery
This particular winery has been around for 15 years, and has been biodynamic since the beginning. (That’s a style of sustainable farming that’s essentially a step beyond organic. Biodynamic farming allows even fewer inputs – chemicals, fertilizers, etc. – than organic farming, and follows traditional methods related to seasonality and moon cycles.)
No Chianti – pass the Verdicchio, please
Verdicchio is the local grape that put Marche on the map as a wine region, so naturally it’s the specialty of this sustainable winery. (What Chianti is to Tuscany, Verdicchio is to Marche… except it’s a white wine instead of a strong red.)
For some of their wine, Tenuta San Marcello uses the ancient amphorae technique . These giant containers are filled with grapes (skins and all), and buried underground, where the earth dissipates heat and keeps the wine cool. After “nine moons,” or when the wine starts to touch the lid of the amphorae, the wine is ready.
We tasted their unique natural wines while eating a “light” dinner of farro salads, local cheeses, and local charcuterie.
The natural wines had a totally different flavor from other verdicchio bottles. (Which we’d already been sampling since the beginning of this bike trip.) Personally, they reminded me of a very interesting cross between white wine and sour beer.
Day 4: 39 km ride to a medieval castle town
Day 4 was the reminder that we were actually on a bike trip , not just an oil and wine tasting trip. We covered a lot of ground today – 24 miles, or 39 km – cycling through some more absolutely beautiful country.
It made me kind of wish we could have split up the oil and wine tastings into two different days, but it all depends on where the best and most sustainability-focused producers happen to be.
And at the end of the day, I really didn’t mind not doing a big visit today. It was also nice to just settle into the ride, enjoy the views, and just be alone with my thoughts.
We stopped for lunch – sack lunches prepared by the agriturismo where we stayed the night before – in a park in the medieval town of Polverigi , which is known for its live theatre scene. Next year, we might even be able to stay for a show, or a perhaps a tour of the town.
But this time, we hopped back on our bikes and pedaled up to the town of Offagna , which centers around a medieval castle. We checked into our hotel, Il Ristoro del Viandante , and had the late afternoon free to explore the town, before meeting back up for an aperitivo and then dinner in a local restaurant.
Gorgeous views from hilltop Offagna, and our dinner there: a “bis di primi,” or two pasta first courses in one.
Day 5: A short bike ride down to the sea
The final day on our bikes was a short, satisfying ride from the high mountain castle of Offagna , to the classic Italian beach town of Sirolo , and the sharp blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. (We cycled about 13 miles, or 21 km.)
It was also the most poignant reminder of what a special experience we’d just had – an entire week without seeing another tourist!
As we rode down from the hills, getting closer to the coast, we finally bumped into several other small groups on bike trips. But before that, we’d been truly on our own, in places very few travelers ever go – especially in the shoulder season. (Any time besides July and August.)
Sirolo – the Pearl of the Adriatic
Then that all changed, as we arrived in Sirolo . It’s still a small town, and is an excellent base for the endless outdoor adventures available nearby, but it’s definitely on the tourism map, so it felt like a bit of a re-entry into civilization.
And about those adventure options: Sirolo is known as the jumping off point for Parco Naturale del Conero (Conero Natural Park – a regional conservation area), and lots of other nature areas that are perfect for kayaking, hiking, more bike riding, or just exploring beaches .
In Sirolo, we checked into a small hotel called Villa Ghirardelli . It had a beautiful garden area, but if I were to go back on my own, I think I’d opt for somewhere with a sea view – after pedaling all the way here, you might feel like you’ve earned it!
We were on our own for dinner, but we’d become such fast friends with our little tour group, that we couldn’t skip one last dinner together. Marco made us a reservation at Ristorante della Rosa , a local gem that specializes in seafood. It was sort of a celebratory dinner, and definitely the most upscale restaurant we’d eaten at the entire trip.
Of all the fantastic meals on this bike tour, this was definitely the furthest from traditional Italian homestyle cooking. (And I’ll be adding this to my list of my favorite restaurants in Italy !)
Ciao for Now: The trip home & beyond
Next year, we’ll have more time to spend adventuring around Sirolo and the surrounding area – and Marco’s itinerary for this trip includes a Day 6 spent doing just that! But this time, we had a train to catch back up to Milan for an event with Emanuele’s family.
So on Day 6, we headed up the coast just 20 km to Ancona. (A 30-minute drive, or 1-hour bus ride.)
While this trip was just a week out of my life, by the end, it felt like one of the most meaningful, and authentically Italian experiences I’ve ever had.
(And that’s even after living in Italy for a few years.) I’d repeat it in a heartbeat, and would be happy to savor every view, every bite and even every muscle ache again.
[ Semi-Related: Looking for a place to warm up your biking legs before heading to Italy? If you live on the East Coast, check out my guide for a sustainable and foodie weekend in the Adirondacks , including how to do the trip car-free and make it bikeable.]
Logistics – Getting to & from the Marche Region
Whether you want to keep exploring or head home, Ancona is the transportation hub that connects Marche to the world… or at least the rest of the region. From there, you could take a ferry across the Adriatic Sea to Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, or even Greece !
You can take advantage of Italy’s excellent train system . It’s just under two hours on the fast train from Ancona to Bologna, or about four hours to Milan, Rome, Bari or Venice. (Those are just the major options without changing trains.)
And Ancona does have a small airport , with mostly regional fights . (But to reduce the carbon footprint of your trip , I’d recommend taking a train to larger airport. Rome’s Fiumicino airport ( FCO ) and Milan’s three airports , especially Malpensa ( MXP ), are the biggest hubs in Italy.)
[ Speaking of carbon , this is where I put my money for “cleaning up” my emissions , in a small but meaningful way.]
For booking train tickets , I recommend checking Omio (which lets you compare multiple train, bus, ferry and flight options in one search) and RailEurope (which also shows the difference in carbon emissions between trains and flights for each route). To read my take on the pros and cons of both platforms, see my guide to booking train tickets in Europe .
For ferry tickets , compare Omio and FerryHopper . (For what you need to know about booking ferry tickets, read this .)
And for flights , I recommend Kayak and Momondo , which I find give the best results.
And stay tuned for my own, very realistic packing list for this trip ! (I’d say it also has some good tips for any bike trip.)
In the meantime, check out my guide to packing light (carry-on only!) for any trip – including weeks at a time in Europe. If you want to skip the roller-bag, here’s my review of my favorite travel backpack (and how I chose it over several others).
Come biking in Italy next year?
Did this story get you itching for an Italian bike trip? I hope so. It was honestly one of my very favorite trips I’ve taken in the country – and I’ve seen a lot of Italy!
I was initially drawn to it because Marco and Basecamp523 share so much of my dedication to sustainable travel, getting off the beaten path, preventing over-tourism, and working exclusively with locally owned businesses. (Even the electric bikes Marco had us riding were all Italian brands!)
That was the baseline. But then the trip exceeded my expectations in so many ways that I’ve decided to take a group of Tilted Map readers with me for a repeat in 2024 !
[ Prefer to go solo, or make your own group? No problem! You can save 10% on any Basecamp523 trip with my referral code: MAP10RURAL .]

Piedmont Pleasures!
After this bike tour, we can hardly imagine touring most of Italy, or Europe, any other way than by bicycle. Stopping in small towns for simple mid-day lunch, riding by a tiny gelato shop and making a quick U-turn, and having a cappuccino among other a few local residents in an ancient town square were just a few of the experiences that allowed us to be part of the Piedmont region, not just tour through it. When we were on streets and road, off the bike trails, we found the drivers in the Piedmont region to be cautious and careful around us, giving us and our bikes as wide of berth as they could afford, including in the roundabouts and larger cities like Tourino and Asti. We're in decent biking shape but grape vines love hillsides so we're glad we selected e-bikes for this particular tour route. We didn't have any problems with the bikes or battery charging (though if you're a larger person, some of the longer riding days required some riders to keep their e-assist on lower levels to facilitate battery strength throughout the day as the Bosch batteries are half strength of what is available here in the US.) The map app with its corresponding daily route map made finding our way simple, and when we left the route for an interesting side-tour of our own (a wine stop!), it was easy to jump back on the route from where we were. You couldn't get lost using the map app.

Go when it is Sunny!
The sunny moments were heavenly, the hotels, food, wine all excellent. We went too late in the season (Oct 8-18) and the weather was mostly cool and rainy. Our few sunny breaks were heavenly, and if you go in September, you will do fine.

Tour of the month
Our day starts in Camogli with a walk in the caruggi, the narrow alleyways that characterise this historical seaside town. We visit the beautiful baroque church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, built in ‘the island’ right on the cliffs facing the sea, and see the charming Castel Dragone, dating back to the XIII century. After enjoying a cappuccino and a slice of focaccia (the typical breakfast of the area!) in one of the coffee shops along the sunny promenade, it is time to start our ride.

A great cycling vacation! The individual stages were well chosen (route, length, landscape, hotels) and the navigation has largely worked very well. With the slopes, especially in the heat, a good condition or possibly an e-bike is required.

Straight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Roads in Puglia and most of southern Italy are not always as well maintained as those found in other parts of Italy. Although our routes are quiet and picturesque, you can expect some rough patches of road along the way. Also, litter can occasionally be part of the landscape, especially when approaching small villages. For most, these challenges are offset by Puglia's beautiful countryside and warm hospitality.
The slower pace and relaxed approach to life in Puglia is one of the highlights of this spectacular region and is reflected in the hotels and restaurants on this trip. This said, service can lack a sense of urgency when compared with the service found in other parts of Europe.

The most beautiful E-Bike Tours in Europe
Active and relaxing vacation
E-bike equipment
Majorca & Madeira
Combination of active and relaxing vacation
Thanks to the categorisation of our cycle holidays according to the tour characteristics easy , medium , challenging and athletic , you can always see at first glance what level of difficulty is required. Are you talking about a sporty tour, but do not feel up to the level of difficulty yet? No problem, then you can easily manage them with the support of an e-bike. The unisex bikes with coaster brake have a battery range of 120-180 kilometres, three support modes and are very easy to use. But be careful, our electric bikes are not ‚motor scooters‘, you have to pedal for active motor support. Then you can decide individually how much support you need. So a perfect combination of active and relaxing holiday.
Reasons for an e-bike tour
- Headwind is yesterday’s news! If you are on the road with an e-bike, you no longer have to deal with whipping headwinds, because the motor will take care of that from now on.
- Riding an e-bike is fun! The fun factor is also not neglected on our e-bike tours across Europe. Thanks to the motorised support, you will feel a lightness in the movement and may be more interested in longer and more demanding routes.
- Steep climbs done in no time! Even short ascents or mountain rides are no longer a problem thanks to e-bikes, simply switch on more support and you are on top of the hill.
- Focus is directed on beauty! Thanks to the motor you can perceive and enjoy your entire surroundings and – above all – the beautiful scenery more intensively with all your senses.
Eurobike’s Unisex-E-Bikes are top of the range :
- Dimensions : 28-inch bicycle with a total weight of approx. 23 kg
- Electric motor : Due to the position of the mid-engine at the bottom bracket the centre of gravitiy is lower and the weight is well-distributed.
- Battery : The rechargeable battery can be easily unclipped from the frame and has a range of 120 to 180 kilometres.
- Modern electronics : The bike-computer is equipped with a premium LED display to tell you how much charge you have remaining. You have a choice of three cruising speeds at the touch of a button.
E-Bike Tours in Europe
E-bike tours in austria.
Land of mountains, land situated on the river, land of fields, and of cathedrals! The first stanza of the national anthem already makes it clear how diverse and beautiful our homeland Austria is. And what could be nicer than exploring all of this by bike? In general, all of our cycle holidays are available as e-bike tours. However, we particularly recommend the tours with the level of difficulty ‚ambitious‘ or ‚sporty‘. This includes, for instance, our bestseller tour, Ten Lakes Tour or the tours on the Tauern Cycle Path , the Danube Cycle Path , the Drau Cycle Path and the Adige Cycle Path from Innsbruck to Lake Garda .
E-Bike Tours in Germany
Our neighboring country also has a lot to offer for e-bike enthusiasts. How about a holiday in Southern Germany , more precisely in the popular region of Bavaria ? Not only nature lovers on the cycle holiday ‚ Romantic Road & Bavarian Lakes ‘ and ‚ From Lake Constance to Lake Königsee ‘ get their money’s worth, but also fans of German beer culture. Experience and taste the Franconian brewing tradition on the ‚ Bavarian Beer Tour ‘. But in case you prefer to drink wine, then we recommend the ‚ Winegrowers‘ Tour on the river Rhine ‘. With an e-bike you cycle through the idyllic vineyards and can relax and taste a glass or two in the evening. The ‚ Neckar, Rhine and Vines Cycle Holiday ‘ is also all about wine. So hop on your bike and enjoy Germany with all your senses thanks to the motorised support.
E-Bike Tours in Italy
Benvenuti in bella Italia! The tourist magnet attracts countless enthusiastic cyclists to Southern Europe every year. However, if you want to get to know and enjoy Italy even more intensively and better, you should definitely use an e-bike. The classic e-bike tours through individual regions of Italy are the ‚ Tuscany roundtrip ‘, ‚ Florence – Rome ‘ and the ‚ Piedmont roundtrip ‘. Pizza, pasta, vino and a well-equipped e-bike await you on these cycle holidays!
E-Bike Tours on Majorca and Madeira
Summer, sun, sunshine on almost 365 days a year! Pack you bike gear, the e-bike is already waiting for you on the Mediterranean islands of Majorca and Madeira. The ‚ Majorca Loop Tour ‘ and ‚ Madeira circular tour ‘ are quite challenging – long daily stages, several inclines and summery temperatures. To ensure that your holiday is not a torture, choose an e-bike as your rental bike. That way you can relax and immerse yourself in the Spanish and Portugese culture.
What can you expect from all these e-bike tours? A lot of relaxation, intersting Day Finishes, beautiful natural scenery, culinary delights and lots of fun!

Arrive in Dolomiti di Sesto
Arrive in Dolomiti di Sesto / Sextner Dolomiten (1,310m / 4,298') and check-in to your hotel (private transfer available on request). Sesto is one of five villages in the Val Pusteria, at the eastern end of this South Tyrolean valley. It is referred to as the “Village of the Three Peaks,” as it sits just beneath Tre Cime di Lavaredo – one of the most recognizable features in the Dolomites. This area has innumerable mountain-bike and hiking routes, is a climbing paradise, and has wonderful ski and cross-country areas available directly from the town center, plus idyllic lakes and rivers, cultural sites, and many gourmet options, that combine to offer fantastic adventures and recreation. Your rental e-bikes and helmets will await you at the hotel.
Hotel in Sesto/Sexten (D)
Passo monte croce.
Today, you'll start from your hotel in Sesto / Sexten and bike to Passo Monte Croce. You'll experience the magnificent panoramic views of the Sesto Sundial and the surrounding Dolomite massifs. After biking for approximately 7km / 4,35 miles, you can take a break at a hut along the way and be spoiled with coffee and homemade apple strudel. Then, continue biking on a slightly more technical path until you reach the next hut, which is also worth a stop. Here, the hospitality is warm and traditional, and the views from the hut are outstanding: they will inspire you to keep going to your well-deserved lunch destination, passing a picturesque reservoir along the way. After lunch, continue downhill on a forest road and bike back to your hotel in Sesto / Sexten. (E-bike ~ 4 hours, 30km / 18 miles, 1,035m / 3,415' ascent and descent)
Hotel in Sesto/Sexten (B,D)
Cortina d’ampezzo.
Today you’ll ride on two popular routes: part of the Lienz-Dobbiaco cycling route, and along the old Cortina-Dobbiaco train line. When you arrive in Dobbiaco, you’ll join the famous Dobbiaco to Cortina trail that travels along the Val di Landro (Landro Valley). Your route follows an old railway line that was converted into a bike path. In the early 20th century this rail line provided communication between the towns of Calalzo, Cortina, Dobbiaco, and Austria. The slope here is very gradual and easy to bike, and the incredible remaining iron bridges traverse deep canyons providing views of the mountains and glaciers that are some of the most beautiful in the Dolomites. Continue in the direction of Cortina d’Ampezzo, en route you’ll have magnificent views of the stunning Tre Cime di Lavaredo. (E-bike ~ 59km / 35,4 miles , 1,250m / 4,125' ascent, 1,350m / 4,455' descent.)
Hotel in Cortina d'Ampezzo (B)
Bike from Cortina towards the stunning Cinque Torri area and descend into the Val Badia. You’ll pass by a fairy-tale setting around a czy malga, a rustic but fully working farm where you’ll be able to taste some delicious dairy products made on site. Gradually climb across grassy flowered flanks to some gentle meadows filled with tiny wooden huts. From here there are breathtaking views of the Conturines, Fanes-Sennes National Park, and the Setsass Massif. The last section of the path will give you an amazing view of the Marmolada Glacier, the “Queen of the Dolomites,” and the largest remaining glacier in these mountains. Descend on a jeep track to your hotel in Alta Badia. Alta Badia is a sunny hollow on the south side of the Val Badia in the Alto Adige region. Home to three cultures – Italian, Austrian, and the native Ladin, most signage in Alta Badia is written in three languages – Italian, German, and Ladin! (E-bike ~ 49km / 30 miles, 2,100m / 6,890' ascent, 1,900m / 6,235' descent.) Off-road: 21 km / 12,6 miles Asphalt: 24,3 km / 14,6 miles Tecnical path: 2,9 km / 1,7 miles
Hotel in Alta Badia (B,D)
Discover alta badia.
After breakfast begin your exciting day by ascending to the meadows (1,859m / 6,099') of Alta Badia, an area of outstanding beauty surrounded by gorgeous flowers and farmers’ huts. The views across to the Puez-Odle National Park and Sass de Putia mountains are superb. (E-bike ~ 48km / 28,8 miles, 1,500m / 4,950' ascent, 1,500m / 4,950' descent.) Off-road: ~ 33,9 km / 20,3 miles Asphalt: ~ 13,2 km / 7,9 miles Tecnical path: ~ 1,1 km / 0,6 miles
Alpe di Siusi
Today you’ll leave Alta Badia behind to enter another beautiful valley of the Dolomites, Val Gardena. This valley is a popular destination throughout the year, for its vicinity to the nearby city of Bolzano makes it easy to reach. It is also known for its wood-carving, which has flourished here since the 17th century. You'll reach the famous Alpe di Siusi, the largest high-altitude alpine plateau in Europe (ranging in elevation from 1,700 to 2,000 meters / 5,577' to 6,562'), a front-row seat facing the Dolomites. (E-bike ~ 39km / 23,4 miles, 1,500m / 4,950' ascent, 1,100m / 3,630' descent.) Off-road: ~ 23,1 km / 13,8 miles Asphalt: ~ 6,4 km / 3,8 miles Tecnical path: ~ 8,9 km / 5,3 miles
Hotel in Val Gardena (B,D)
After breakfast, departure on your own (private transfer available on request).

Ten of the best cycling holidays for 2024
2024 is set to be one of those cycling mega-years. On top of the usual three professional Grand Tours – in France, Spain, and Italy – and the World Championships in Switzerland, a summer Olympics (also in France) will be thrown in, for an extra sprinkle of fairy dust.
The Tour of Britain’s future still hangs in the balance, but across Europe and around the world, professional and amateur cyclists are gearing up for another 12 months of hairpin corners and steep ascents.
If the cycling bug hasn’t already bitten you, then 2024 might be the year it finally latches on. From Wales to the Arctic, we’ve selected ten of the best cycling holidays to whet your ravenous appetite, including serious cycles for the Mamils and Mawils, and gentle pootles for the easy riders, too.
Cycle the Cotswolds
New for 2024, this Oxford to Bath guided bike tour starts in the city of dreaming spires and ends with curved rows of honeystone Georgian buildings.
On the way you’ll take in villages such as Bibury, described by William Morris as the most beautiful in England, and Bampton, where scenes from Downton Abbey were filmed. Famed for its rolling hills and centuries-old pubs, the route also weaves through Bourton-on-the-Water, the Venice of the Cotswolds.
Exodus Adventure Travels ’ (020 8772 3743) new six-day tour starts at £2,099 per person, including bed and breakfast accommodation and a trip leader throughout.
Brecon Beacons and beyond
If you like the idea of carrying all your own gear and travelling under your own steam, then Roam Bikepacking offers something slightly different. It will equip you with a bike, saddlebags, a tent and sleeping bag, allowing you to get fully off road and into the wild.
Its new tour for 2024 will see guests take on Gospel Pass, Wales’s highest road, and Devil’s Staircase – one of Britain’s toughest climbs, reaching a maximum gradient of 20 per cent. They’ll also tell you about the best places to wild camp and swim.
Roam Bikepacking (07967 870654) can organise this four-day tour for £425 per person (camping) or £550 (B&B).
One for the road in France
2024 is set to be a vintage year for cycling in France. Not only will it host the annual Tour but also the summer Olympics. But while the pros will be powered by sports drinks and protein shakes, how about a leisurely amble around Champagne and Burgundy – two of Europe’s great wine-growing regions.
Highlights of this new tour include a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral in Reims, and a tasting at the Côte des Blancs wine estate. The laid-back route also takes in historic Dijon, the charming capital of Burgundy.
Exodus Adventure Travels (020 8772 3743) offers a seven-day tour from £4,399 per person, including flights, half-board accommodation, bike hire and a trip leader. Departures on June 23, July 14 and Sept 15 2024.
Midnight sun in Norway’s Lofoten Islands
This new self-guided cycling holiday explores one of northern Europe’s most spectacular and isolated regions, the Lofoten Archipelago. The route takes in deserted beaches and tiny fishing villages. If you’re really lucky, you might spot a white-tailed eagle.
Head north between the end of May and mid-July and the sun won’t set at all. Your bright nights will be spent in seaside lodges and red fishermen’s cabins. As for fuel: booze certainly won’t be cheap, but there will be plenty of local cheese and stockfish dumplings.
Headwater (01606 720199) is offering this new self-guided trip between June and August from £3,419 per person, including flights, accommodation, bike hire, and meals.
Discover the rural patchwork of Poland
Poland, you say? It’s not a country that many would associate with a cycling holiday, but then again, few operators share the vision of The Slow Cyclist, renowned for its off-the-beaten-track adventures.
This new tour kicks off in May and takes in Poland’s Lower Silesia region, bordering Germany and northern Czechia. By day, you’ll pass castles, forests and extinct volcanoes, but at night there’s plenty of time for Polish wine – the country is home to 400 vineyards – and nutritious hearty local food. Silesia is best known for its poppyseed cakes.
The Slow Cyclist (01865 410356) is offering a new four-night trip from £2,290 per person, based on travelling as a group of 12, including airport transfers, a support vehicle, and English-speaking guides.
Train like a pro in the French Alps
Aimed at serious cyclists, this week-long training camp based out of Morzine – host of the Tour de France on more than 20 occasions – is probably as close to riding professionally as you can get.
This “holiday” includes a private chef, daily massages, and a support vehicle. You’ll also receive a pre-camp training plan and an all-inclusive drinks package for the evenings. But don’t overdo it – the cycling will be tough. You’ll climb over 40,000 feet in a week. One of the climbs, the Col de la Pierre Carrée, is considered among the toughest in the world.
Sa Calobra Cycling Club (0033 688 699 160) is running this seven-night holiday between June 28 and July 5 2024 and costs from £2,208 per person.
A long weekend in Italy’s Dolomites
This is a convenient cycling holiday for people who don’t fancy spending a whole week in the saddle. Rather than moving each night, you’ll be based in a four-star lakeside hotel, in the village of Alleghe.
Each day ride comes in three options, offering mighty climbs for experienced col baggers, or more relaxed jaunts for the beginners. Epic scenery is, however, guaranteed for all. Day four tackles Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites.
Marmot Tours (01373 830409) offers four-night tours for £1,350 per person this July and August. Airport transfers and half-board accommodation are included, so too is wine with dinner.
Explore Ireland’s south coast
