First Goa group on Holy Land pilgrimage since Gaza war

The 17 pilgrims visit the Mount of Beatitudes as part of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in March.

It was a memorable experience for 17 pilgrims and a special moment for Panaji’s travel agency Zion Tours and Travels, as a first group from Goa went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land since the war broke out in Gaza in October 2023.

Led by the tour leader Paul Siqueira, proprietor of Zion Tours and Travels, the group, consisting of pilgrims from different parts of India, mainly Goa, Mumbai and Kolkata, left from Goa on March 8 and returned from the Holy Land on March 19.

“We feel blessed and grateful to be back in the Holy Land after so long. It was a joy to be back, especially during the season of Lent,” remarked Siqueira.

The 12-day tour covered three countries, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. The group stayed for two days in the Sea of Galilee and spent three days in Bethlehem, Palestine.

“Everything was incredibly peaceful in every place right from the first day to the last. Schools, colleges and churches are open, children playing on the streets, and people walking about on the roads. Everything was so peaceful,” said Siqueira.

Besides Zion’s group from Goa, there were other groups from Indonesia, Philippines and two groups from Kerala as well.

Siqueira explained that Zion’s groups normally consist of 50-100 pilgrims to the Holy Land.

“But this time, because of the war, they were only 17 pilgrims. Nonetheless, these 17 pilgrims had an awesome and spirit-filled time and returned back with smiling faces,” said Siqueira.

Siqueira said the strength of the group didn’t matter to the shopkeepers and guides in the Holy Land, who were brimming with joy to see people from different countries after so long.

“It meant so much to see the joy back on the faces of all our friends because we had come back again. In fact, most of them remarked that they were not concerned with the size of the group, just the fact that we had come back to the Holy Land and supported them during this difficult time.”

“As for the food, the people, as usual, relished the barbecue and Arabic food. But most importantly, they were blessed to visit the Holy Land, many of them were visiting for the first time and were walking in the footsteps of the Lord.”

“We are overjoyed to conduct pilgrimages back to the Holy Land, and we will be leaving again in May for another pilgrimage,” said Siqueira.

While this was Siqueira’s 91st trip to the Holy Land, Zion Tours and Travels has, so far, organised pilgrimages for over 10,000 pilgrims to the Holy Land, ever since it began operations in 2011.

Incidentally, Zion Tours and Travels had also succeeded in getting installed the Magnificat in Konkani language, and it is the only Goan company to get an award from the Tourism Ministry in Israel.

Zionto visit the Upper Room and the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu, which is built over the ruins of the Palace of Caiaphas, the High Priest before whom Jesus was brought for trial (Mark 14: 53-65). Bethlehem : Visit the Basilica of the Nativity where there will be an opportunity to kneel at the birthplace of Christ in the Grotto of the Nativity. Before leaving Bethlehem we shall visit the Fields of the Shepherds where the Angel of the Lord proclaimed the birth of the Messiah, the Savior of the World, to the shepherds. (Holy mass will be celebrated at one of the churches En-route). Overnight stay at Bethlehem. (B/L/D). Day 6 We shall enter within the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem and walk in the footsteps of our Lord as he bore the burden of our sins on the Cross at Golgotha. We visit the Pools of Bethesda where Jesus healed the man who had been crippled for 38 years (Joh. 5:1-9) and walk the VIA DOLOROSA on following the 14 stations of the Cross from Pilate's Judgment Hall to the empty tomb in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. We shall visit the Western Wall (Wailing Wall) and visit the Garden Tomb. (Holy mass will be celebrated at one of the churches En-route). Overnight stay at Bethlehem.(B/L/D). Day 7 We drive to the top of the Mount of Olives from which Jesus ascended to heaven after his resurrection. From the Mount there is a magnificent view over all ancient and modern Jerusalem, the center of the biblical world. We visit the holy shrines on the Mount and walk down the "Palm Sunday Road" visiting the Chapel of Dominus Flevit (Jesus wept) En route to the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of all Nations where Christ prayed. Drive to Ein Karem where John the Baptist was born. Visit the Church of St. John the Baptist and Church of the Visitation. Proceed to the Mahane Yehudamarket for shopping. We will have a festive ceremony and distribution of Holy Land certificates signed by the Mayor of Jerusalem to all pilgrims along with JP badges. (Holy mass will be celebrated at one of the churches En-route). Overnight stay at Bethlehem.(B/L/D). Day 8 After breakfast Transfer to the TabaBorder Crossing for entering into Egypt. Finish security and immigration formalities. Transfer to St. Catherine's for overnight stay. (Holy mass subject to availability). Overnight stay at St.Catherine's. (B/L/D). Day 9 VisitSaint Catherine's Monastery,the site of the Burning Bush where Moses is said to have received the 10 Commandments. Proceed to Cairo, via the Suez canal. Lunch En-route. Arrive in Cairo. The city of Jerusalem offers a unique convergence of Judaism, Christianity, and the Muslim faith. Sea of Galilee

Nowhere in Israel does the Bible come to life more than along the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Pilgrims who visit the Galilee region have the opportunity to imagine what life was like 2,000 years ago and what Jesus and the twelve disciples experienced while fishing on the Sea of Galilee. The peaceful setting and the natural wonders of the Golan Heights to the east and Mt. Arbel to the west make for a great way to start your morning in quiet reflection. During our tour, we explore the Biblical towns of Capernaum, Magdala, and Nazareth and take a meaningful cruise on the Sea of Galilee.

The Dead Sea is not only the lowest and most lifeless lake in the world, but also nearly 10 times saltier than the ocean. Travelers will enjoy the beautiful colors of the blue water and the red mountains of Jordan to the east. Garden Tomb

Our visit to the Garden Tomb and its surrounding gardens is normally one of the highlights of our tour to Israel. The Garden Tomb is a rock-cut tomb in Jerusalem that was unearthed in 1867 and is considered by some Protestants to be the site of the burial and resurrection of Jesus. Our visit offers a unique time of prayer, reflection, communion, and praise, which will be a special life-long memory for many travelers.

Jordan River Baptism Site

The Jordan River Baptist Site or “Yardenit” is a baptism site located along the Jordan River just south of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel. This site is frequented by Christian Pilgrims who enjoy imagining the setting of the baptism of Jesus. For anyone who would like to be baptized in the Jordan River, Yardenit has been developed to be a peaceful setting with beautiful gardens, clean colored water, changing facilities, showers, and a nice souvenir shop.

Caesarea Philippi

To many Pilgrim travelers, Caesarea Philippi is a special surprise while on their tour. Located along the rushing springs of Mt. Taking a trip to Israel during the spring or fall offers the most enjoyable weather of the year but normally has the largest crowds. How many days do you need for a Holy Land tour?

We offer several types of tours of the Holy Land, so the duration of your tour depends on the tour package you choose. The Best of Israel Tour is our most basic offering and includes a Sea of Galilee boat ride, a trip to the Jordan River Baptism Site, the Dead Sea, and many opportunities to walk on the same land Jesus walked on. This is our shortest trip at just 9 or 10 days. Our most involved trips allow you to experience a wide range of historical locations over the course of a few weeks. These tours can take up to 24 days, giving you the chance to spend an extended period of time learning about and visiting different parts of the world. What is the dress code in Israel?

The dress code in Israel is different from other parts of the world. There are a few dress code basics you should understand before booking Israel tours: When you’re in Israel, there is no strict dress code. You can wear what you feel comfortable wearing. However, both men and women should try to dress conservatively and cover their shoulders and knees when visiting any of the religious sites throughout Israel. Generally speaking, it’s best to avoid tank tops and shorts. Men need to cover their heads when visiting the Western Wall. Pilgrim Tours provides a Pilgrim Tours ball cap upon arrival in Israel, but you might consider purchasing an affordable kippa that you can bring when you visit Jewish sites. Some places may offer a free kippa, but these are generally low quality. (Women are not required to cover their heads at any sight.) You can figure out what you need to pack and how to dress each day by looking at the itinerary for our Holy Land tours. Guides normally offer guidance on how to dress for the next day while on tour. We also suggest looking at the extended weather forecast as you prepare and pack for your trip.

Is there a lot of walking involved on an Israel Tour?

Our Israel tours do require a significant amount of walking each day and you should be able to walk unassisted 3-4 miles per day on average. Make sure you have a comfortable pair of shoes that provide adequate support. While there are bus and boat rides during these tours, you have to walk quite a bit to explore some of the Biblical sites. Our tour guides normally give the group a few options at sites for those that have physical limitations. One thing to keep in mind is that there are many hills and valleys in Israel which can make walking even more taxing. The amount of walking you have to do may vary based on the tour you take, so look at the itinerary before choosing your tour. The good news is that Israel is a beautiful country to see on foot, and you’ll have several opportunities to sit down and give your feet a rest. As long as you have a good pair of shoes and comfortable clothes, it’s easy to forget about all the walking you’re doing and enjoy the tour.

What passport & visa information do I need for your Israel tours?

U.S. citizens need a valid U.S. passport with at least six months validity beyond their intended stay to enter Israel. Make two photocopies of your passport. Leave one copy at home and carry the other separately from your original. Israel: U.S. and Canadian Citizens do not need a Visa when entering Israel. Non U. What currency can I use on your Israel tours?

The U.S. dollar is widely accepted across Israel, and we suggest bringing about $30 for each day you’ll be on tour. U.S. dollars are recommended for use for small purchases and lunches. Lunches typically cost $15-20. It is important to bring about 20 $1 bills as some bathrooms charge a small fee for use. Credit cards may also be used for larger purchases. ATMs in Israel are all connected to European and American banking systems. Please be advised that the ATM machines dispense money in SHEKELS – NOT U.S. DOLLARS. Do I need to bring a converter for the Israel tour?

Day 1 Depart USA

Relax and rest on your flight from the USA.

Day 2 Arrive in Israel

You will be landing at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. Afterwards, we board our motor coach and go to our hotel on the beautiful Sea of Galilee. After we have checked into our hotel, we enjoy a dinner together and time to relax.

Day 3 Sea of Galilee/ Boat Ride/ Capernaum/ Jordan

The group will start early in the morning with a view from the breathtaking shore of the Sea of Galilee following breakfast. You will see the Mt. of Beatitudes where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount. After that, a motor launch will take us all on a short cruise across the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum. You will see the ruins of the third-century synagogue before reaching Tabgha, place of multiplication of Loaves and Fishes. That brings us to lunch, where we will enjoy a delicious St. Peter’s fish luncheon at a famous resort on the Galilean seashore. Immediately following our meal, the group will visit the Jordan River and have the chance for an optional baptism. We will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 Caesarea/ Megiddo/ Nazareth/ Cana/ Mt. Carmel

The fourth day will begin along the coastal plain and the Mediterranean Sea to Caesarea, the ancient port built by Herod the Great. We will then visit the fortress used by the Crusaders where the first Gentile, Cornelius the Centurion, and his household were baptized. Following, there will be a visit to Mt. Carmel. The tour will continue to Megiddo and the Valley of Armageddon. We will have time to visit the historic military fortress that controlled the highway between Egypt and Mesopotamia, and we will also tour the excavation and museum to understand how the legendary hill played such an important role during the Wars of antiquity. From there, we will go to Nazareth and visit the Nazareth Village. We will then go to Cana of Galilee, finally arriving at Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee where the group will spend the night.

Day 5 Beit Shean/ Dead Sea

The morning will start with a trip to the Jordan Valley where you will visit Beit Shean, one of the Decapolis cities and largest remains of a complete ancient Roman city. The tour will continue through the valley and on to lunch around the Dead Sea. Afterwards you will check-in to your hotel early; you will have time to relax and enjoy the spa and go for a swim in the Dead Sea.

Day 6 Masada/ Ein Gedi/ Jerusalem

The sixth day of the tour starts with a trip to Herod’s ancient fortress of Masada high atop a mountain on the edge of the Dead Sea. In the afternoon, on the way to Jerusalem, your group will visit Ein Gedi, an oasis in the desert and a green Garden of Eden in the wilderness. It is situated on the shore of the Dead Sea the lowest place on Earth - at the feet of majestic mountains and cliffs. Ein Gedi contains the historical and archaeological remains of its first inhabitants, who discovered the magic of the place more than 5,000 years ago. The day will end with an overnight stay in Jerusalem.

Day 7 Jerusalem/ Bethlehem

First, a tour at Mt. of Olives and journey to the Garden of Gethsemane on foot where you will see ancient olive trees, some of which have been there since Jesus’ time. That is followed by a visit to the house of Caiaphas, where Jesus was held the night before his crucifixion. The next stop will be Mt. Zion and the Upper Room for a time of devotion and worship. The afternoon will bring a visit to Bethlehem, the Church of The Nativity and the Shepherd’s Field. The group will also tour the fields of Boaz and Ruth before dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 8 Old City/ Western Wall/ Dome of the Rock/ St. Anne/ Via Dolorosa

Tour the Old City of Jerusalem where it all began. We will start at the Lions’ Gate to see the old Crusader’s Church of St. Anne, the pool of Bethesda and the remains of Antonia Fortress, which is believed to be the site of the trial of Jesus. Next will be a walk of the Via Dolorosa and visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and visit the Jewish Quarter and the “Wailing Wall”, followed by Mt. Moriah, also called Temple Mount. It is here at Solomon’s Temple where the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque stand. Mt. Moriah was where Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice, and is the perfect end to a truly memorable day. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in Jerusalem.

Day 9 Bethany/ Qumran/ Jericho

The tour will travel to Bethany which is recorded in the New Testament as the home of the siblings Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, as well as that of Simon the Leper. Jesus is reported to have lodged there after his entry into Jerusalem, and it could be from Bethany that he parted from his disciples at the Ascension. You will also visit The Tomb of Lazarus in Bethany where a very old staircase leads into what is left of the tomb, of which much has been destroyed through history most likely by past earthquakes. In Qumran you will see where the Dead Sea Scrolls were uncovered. You will also travel to Jericho, the oldest inhabited city in the world. You will travel to the biblical town of Jericho and see the Tel of Jericho, Mount of Temptation, and view the Valley of the Shadow of Death. In the evening you will enjoy dinner at your hotel in Jerusalem.

Day 10 Ein Karem/ Emmaus/ Garden Tomb

You have the morning to yourself in Jerusalem for a time of reflection before an afternoon visit to Ein Karem “ Spring of the Vineyard”, the home of John the Baptist. The Garden Tomb service will be a truly memorable time on the tour. The group will celebrate Communion in the Garden before a farewell dinner, and travel back to Tel Aviv.

Day 11 Return to USA

Relax and reflect on your flight home.

“What a trip!  Leading up to visiting Israel we were excited with anticipation, but boy did it exceed anything we had imagined.  Our tour guide CJ was outstanding. He broke down the Jewish culture, past and modern history, biblical connections/application, and geography of Israel at every site.  It was just so awesome with how many sites and artifacts we were shown and how seamlessly our trip was organized. Throughout the week we were taken well care of.  We stayed in very nice hotels, ate great food, and enjoyed a comfortable, air-conditioned bus driven by our expert driver, Happy.  Happy made sure we stayed hydrated and took extra special care of us in keeping us safe. CJ and Happy complemented each other wonderfully. With packed days of touring, we enjoyed restful evenings. We also felt safe and secure throughout our travels, allowing us to delve fully into what we were learning and what God was teaching us about Himself. This was my first time to Isreal, and it was such a fantastic trip due to our guide Adam and our driver Money Mike! Adam is so knowledgeable and was really able to make each site come alive for me. We had a really large group, and I am sure that Adam felt like he was “herding cats” all week, but he kept us together and moving through the areas while sharing so much information. With Mike’s driving and sense of humor, I felt very safe even though the streets sometimes seemed way too narrow for all of the buses and cars! The team of Adam and Money Mike were fabulous, and I would highly recommend them!!
