15 Best Places to Visit in Sumatra (Indonesia)

Sumatra sits in western Indonesia and makes up part of the Sunda Islands. Consisting of a number of different provinces, Sumatra is often less-visited by tourists compared with some of the big hits in Indonesia such as Bali or Lombok . This is a shame, as Sumatra offers a completely different side of this vast and amazing country and is covered in gorgeous primary rainforest which Sumatran tigers, elephants, and orangutan still call home.

One of the big draws in Sumatra is the diversity of experiences it offers visitors, and you can spend time in big cities like Medan or Banda Aceh, relax on soft sandy beaches or go trekking inside some of the most famous national parks in Indonesia. When it comes to unique culture, Sumatra doesn’t disappoint, and you can travel to Lake Toba to learn about the Batak way of life, or visit Padang which is the home of the Minangkabau people who run a matriarchal society.

Wherever you choose to travel to in Sumatra, you will find welcoming spots that are off the usual tourist trails and that allow you to immerse yourself in traditional Indonesian life and culture.

Here are the 15 best places to visit in Sumatra …

Sultan's Palace Maimoon In Medan

Medan is the third largest city in Indonesia and is also the capital of the province of North Sumatra.

Unfortunately Medan is often used strictly as an entry and exit point for visitors who want to move on to other spots in Sumatra, but to miss a visit to Medan is to miss a trick.

This vast city is known to domestic tourists as the culinary capital of Indonesia and you can happily spend a day eating local delights like Soto Medan and delicious Nasi Padang.

You will also find some impressive cultural attractions here such as Istana Maimun which is the home of the Sultan and you can learn the history of the royal family here and even dress up in period garb and take photographs in the ornate throne room.

Other sites include the stunning Tjong A Fie Mansion and the main spectacular mosque called Mesjid Raya.

2. Lake Toba

Lake Toba

Lake Toba is undoubtedly the main attraction in Sumatra and is around 5 hours away by road from Medan.

The lake has the claim to fame of being the largest crater lake of its kind in the world and is said to be the result of a massive volcanic eruption or, as local legend has it, the result of the wish of a magic fish.

Whatever the true story, the lake that sits in the crater of a long extinct volcano is one of the top sights across Indonesia and you can take a boat out on the water or go for a cooling swim.

On the main island of Samosir you can visit a cultural village to learn about traditional handicrafts like weaving and see some spectacular old fashioned Batak houses made of wood.

You can easily explore the Lake Toba region by car or motorbike and if you travel up into the mountains you will find hot springs and dainty villages dotted around the scenic countryside.

3. Bukit Lawang

Bukit Lawang

Bukit Lawang is another one of the main attractions in Sumatra and is a small village that sits on the outskirts of the Gunung Leuser National Park.

This protected area of jungle stretches all the way from Sumatra up into Aceh Province and is the home of a plethora of local flora and fauna.

The main reason why many people come here is to see the local orangutans that live here and you can travel to their feeding platform twice a day to see them swing through the trees in search of bananas.

Trekking is a common pastime here and you can choose from day hikes or longer treks that mean that you can set up camp in the middle of the rainforest.

If you don’t fancy the downhill trek back into Bukit Lawang then you can opt for tubing down the river that runs through the jungle.

Rumah Gadang Or Big House In Padang, West Sumatra

The city of Padang in West Sumatra is rarely visited by international tourists although it is a well loved spot on the domestic tourism scene.

The reason why many Indonesians flock here is for the food, as this is the birthplace of Nasi Padang, arguably the most famous regional cuisine in Indonesia.

Nasi Padang consists of rice served with a range of curries and side dishes and there is no better place to sample it that the spot where it was first created.

If you want to travel onward to the Mentawai Islands to go surfing, then you will need to stay overnight in Padang, and it is well worth spending a day or two here eating your way around the city before moving on.

5. Gunung Sibayak

Gunung Sibayak

Gunung Sibayak is one of several volcanoes in Sumatra although it is classified as dormant and is one of the easiest volcanoes to climb if you are in the area.

Located close to the town of Berastagi, Gunung Sibayak still has gas and smoke erupting from the crater from time to time and you will also find some soothing hot springs on the side of the volcano that are said to have medicinal properties thanks to the volcanic minerals found within.

The hike to the top of Gunung Sibayak is around 7 kilometers long so depending on your fitness levels it should take around three hours to get to the summit.

A guide is recommended especially if you are not an experienced trekker although this is not mandatory.

6. The Mentawai Islands

Mentawai Islands

The Mentawai Islands are made up of more than 70 little islands off the coast of Padang in West Sumatra and if you like surfing then this is a spot that it is not to be left off the itinerary.

The Mentawai Islands are said to have some of the best surfing conditions in Indonesia and those in the know often travel to Bali first before moving on to the Mentawais for the rest of the surf season.

Other activities on the Mentawai Islands include swimming, water sports, and trekking as many of the islands are covered in untouched areas of rainforest.

7. Banda Aceh

Banda Aceh

Banda Aceh is the capital of Aceh Province and is unfortunately best known for the horrific tsunami that hit here in 2004. Much of the city has now been repaired however and you can visit places such as the Tsunami Museum to learn more about the tragedy.

Other highlights of Aceh include its Grand Mosque which is one of the most beautiful religious monuments in Indonesia, as well as other haunting relics from the time of the tsunami like a large ship that was washed ashore and which has now become a permanent museum.

Aceh is also famous across the country for its coffee so make sure to stop off at its most famous coffee shop called Warung Kopi Solong to try a cup.

8. Bukittinggi

Bukittinggi

Bukittinggi lies in the west of Sumatra and the main reason to come here is to take in the surrounding scenery which is simply stunning.

The premium attraction here is Lake Maninjau that shimmers with deep emerald waters and is encircled by lush countryside.

As well as the vistas over the water, this is also the land of the Minangkabau people and you can check out the wonderful Minang architecture here as many of the homes are shaped to reflect the horns of a buffalo.

9. Weh Island

Weh Island

If you are travelling up into Aceh Province then it makes sense to also hop across to Weh Island which lies just off the coast.

Something of a well kept secret in Sumatra, Weh Island offers you miles of beautiful sands and some of the clearest waters in the region, so if you like diving or snorkeling then this is a good choice.

You will find a good range of guesthouses here as well as some beachside cafes that are the perfect spot to watch the sunset and you can also easily hire surfing or diving equipment here.

10. Palembang

Palembang

Palembang is the capital city of the province of South Sumatra and also has a fascinating history as is it one of the oldest inhabited parts of Indonesia.

In ancient times it would have been the strategic center of the mighty Srivijaya Kingdom and occupies a pretty spot on the majestic Musi River.

This river is actually one of the main reasons to visit Palembang as the waterfront is dotted with small boats that also serve as restaurants.

On these boats you will find delicious plates of local delicacies that also allow you to take in the vistas over the water as you dine.

11. Berastagi

Berastagi

The town of Berastagi is only a few hours away from Medan but sits at a higher elevation which means that it has a very different feel to it.

Many of the fruit and vegetables that make their way to Medan are grown in Berastagi and one of the highlights of a trip here is to visit one of the fruit farms and pick your own fruit straight from the trees.

This is also the home of the Karo people and you can learn about the local culture as well as check out the amazing Karo architecture.

Nias, Sumatra

Unfortunately Bali has come to dominate the surf scene in Indonesia, although if you are in Sumatra and are looking for some waves then look no further than the island of Nias.

Here you will find a less crowded version of Bali and you can easily rent surf or diving equipment and explore the seas around the island.

The area is also famous for its stone jumping tradition where locals have to clear a high stone in a single jump, so make sure to check out this amazing feat of athleticism if you are in the area.

13. Batusangkar

Cow Race In Batusangkar

Batusangkar means ‘stone cage’ in Indonesian and is known on the domestic market as one of the most culturally important places in Sumatra.

Located in the Tanah Datar Regency in the west of Sumatra, Batusangkar has a range of historical attractions such as Fort van der Capellen which was a Dutch outpost during the colonial period.

Batusangkar is also famous of its traditional festivals such as pacu jawi which is basically cow racing that takes place in the muddy fields around the city.

Jockeys hold on to a set of reins attached to the cow and then skate through the fields on the surface of the mud making this an amazing experience that is not to be missed if you are here at the right time.

The schedule changes from year to year so it is best to ask locally when the next tournament will take place.

14. Belitung

Belitung Islands

Belitung is an island off the east coast of Sumatra that sits in the Java Sea and is part of the wider Bangka-Belitung Islands.

One of the main attractions here is the chance to explore the coves and islets and some of the main beaches that are not to be missed are Tanjung Tinggi Beach and Tanjung Kelayang Beach.

On a visit here you can expect cobalt blue seas as well as sandy beaches and a range of craggy granite rock formations that tower out of the water.

Some of the main activities here include snorkeling and swimming or you can take a scenic boat trip.

15. Lampung

Pasir Putih Beach

Lampung Province is hardly ever visited by foreigners to Sumatra and as a result is one of the best hidden gems in the region.

You can travel to Pasir Putih Beach which means White Sands Beach in Indonesian and if you make the trip to Kiluan you can even go dolphin spotting and enjoy the graceful creatures that swim in the waters here.

Lampung is also the home of the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park which offers you some great hiking trails and the opportunity to see a range of local flora and fauna.

The rainforests of Sumatra have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so the chance to enjoy the natural scenery is one of the highlights of a trip to this part of Indonesia.

North Sumatra Travel Itinerary: Where to Go & How Long to Stay

A fiery land.

Sumatra doesn’t stand still.

This fiery island in western Indonesia sits right on top of the Pacific Ocean’s “ring of fire” making it a true hotspot for cataclysmic events. The 2014 tsunami hit North Sumatra especially hard.

There are 35 active volcanoes in Sumatra, and in North Sumatra, two volcanoes are of particular interest to travellers: Mount Sinabung and Mount Sibayak – both located closely to Berastagi .

There’s no doubt that these are fertile lands. The biodiversity in the rain forests of the north is staggering (and includes wild orangutans !) while the islands to the west of Sumatra are filled with marine life under the sparkling surface.

Lake Toba (formed by a supervolcano ) is a great place to unwind after experiencing some of North Sumatra’s natural attractions.

In this extensive Sumatra itinerary travel guide, we’ll do our best to give you an overview of what to do, where to go and how long to stay.

Understand North Sumatra

North Sumatra is Sumatra’s most populous province with about 13.5 million inhabitants of Sumatra’s total 54.4 million.

Medan is both the capital city of North Sumatra and Sumatra’s most important city. It is here most international tourists enter the island.

To understand North Sumatra, it helps to briefly understand its geography.

With just the narrow Strait of Malacca separating Sumatra from Malaysia, Sumatra is the closest part of Indonesia to mainland Asia.

Sumatra is Indonesia’s largest island (if you don’t count the Malaysian part of Kalimantan/Borneo) and the world’s sixth-largest .

Surrounding area of Sipiso Piso Waterfall - a must on your Sumatra itinerary

Mountains and volcanoes

The Barisan Mountains (or Bukit Barisan) form the backbone of Sumatra with its 35 active volcanoes.

The range starts all the way north at Weh Island (Pulau Weh) and continues to the south of Sumatra towards Java.

The west of the island is dominated by this mountain range while the east is made up primarily of rivers and swamps .

Sibayak with Sinabung in the background

Deforestation is a big problem in Sumatra and these days you’ll mostly be able to find primary rain forest in the mountainous regions.

In North Sumatra, the Leuser Ecosystem is of great conservation importance for preserving the homes of orangutans and elephants among other species.

There are several islands off the north and west coast of Sumatra .

Some of the most famous are Simeulue , Banyak Islands , Nias and the Mentawai Islands .

Weh Island in Banda Aceh province all the way to the north is also a popular tourist stop.

Our Sumatra itinerary

We flew into Medan’s Kualanamu International Airport from Penang in Malaysia to start our Sumatran adventure.

We also flew back out of Medan to Kuala Lumpur.

In total, we spent three weeks in Sumatra.

These are the places we visited in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Being able to experience orangutans in the wild was the reason we started thinking about visiting Sumatra in the first place.

The obvious place to do so is from Bukit Lawang in North Sumatra, so that’s where we headed first.

We went on a 2 days/1 night ethical orangutan trek and absolutely loved the experience.

Not only did we get to see orangutans swinging around the treetops; we were also lucky enough to witness some of their babies !

How long to stay in Bukit Lawang

With one night on arrival and one before leaving again, the absolute minimum time to spend in Bukit Lawang is two nights – but that will only have you going into the jungle on a short day trip.

We recommend that you spend a night in the jungle to fully immerse yourself in nature (or perhaps two or three nights if you want to venture even deeper).

For most people, three or four nights in total will be perfect.

Where to stay in Bukit Lawang:

  • Value for money : Ecolodge Bukit Lawang – A great place to stay and relax before and after your orangutan tour.
  • Value for money : Hotel Orangutan – Nice rooms with wifi.
  • Budget : Green Travelodge – Private bathroom and fan at a good price.

Berastagi is the famous home of the two volcanoes Sinabung and Sibayak.

Sinabung is the taller one at 2,460 metres (versus Sibayak’s 2,212 metres), and it’s pretty with its perfect cone .

But it’s also really dangerous and not to be climbed.

We went on a sunrise hike to Sibayak (from where it’s possible to see Sinabung) and really enjoyed both the trek and the amazing views from the summit.

If you get the chance, try to go at either sunrise or sunset.

Sipiso Piso Waterfall

On our way to Samosir Island in Lake Toba from Berastagi, we stopped at Sipiso Piso Waterfall.

The running water drops 120 metres from an underground river and ends up in Lake Toba on the lake’s northern shores.

Though the sight is impressive enough from the viewpoints up top , getting down to the bottom of the falls was really the highlight of visiting.

How long to stay in Berastagi

Before travelling to Sumtra, we thought that we could easily spend a handful of nights in Berastagi surrounded by pretty views.

While we loved the fresh mountain air , we found quality accommodation to be a bit too expensive for our budget. Which made us stay for just two nights .

If you get a nice place to stay, it’s easy to justify staying in Berastagi for three or four nights .

Especially if you visit Sipiso Piso Waterfall as a day trip from town instead of either to or from Lake Toba as we did.

Where to stay in Berastagi (near both Sibayak and Sipiso Piso):

  • Value for money : Sinabung Hills Berastagi – Pool and A/C at a fair price.
  • Budget : Hotel Kalang Ulu. – Wifi in the rooms and nice sunset views.
  • Budget : Wisma Sunrise View – Where we stayed and hired our guide for the volcano in Berastagi. Simple rooms with nice views at ridiculously low prices.

Sunset in Berastagi

With the most adventure-filled days behind us, we immediately felt at ease on Samosir Island in Lake Toba.

Even though it’s a really big island (technically only because a canal was built where it connects to the rest of Sumatra on the central western side), Samosir Island feels very relaxed.

Most tourists tend to base themselves near Tuk Tuk , and so did we.

We arrived by boat directly from Parapat across the water and got dropped off directly at our hotel.

Renting a scooter for a day (if you know how to drive) is a must when you visit. The southern part of the island is especially beautiful.

Tuk Tuk on Samosir Island in Lake Toba.

How long to stay on Samosir Island, Lake Toba

Staying for a few nights (or even weeks) on Samosir Island in Lake Toba is a must on any North Sumatra itinerary.

Originally, we had planned to stay for just two nights .

But we extended our stay to four nights as we enjoyed the lake views, mild temperatures, good food and incredible local hospitality so much.

Where to stay on Samosir Island:

  • Value for money : Zoe’s Paradise Waterfront Hotel – Partly Swiss-owned with everything you need for a pleasant stay on Samosir Island.
  • Budget : Mas Cottages – Also located lakeside. Where we stayed!

Asu Island was everything we dreamed of: Some of the most beautiful water we’ve ever seen, a perfect white sand beach and huts right next to the water.

The (vegan) food options were much better than anticipated and the seven puppies were just the best thing ever.

If you’re looking to unwind in a hammock while looking at an unreal tropical scene, Asu Island just might be the place for you.

Asu Island itinerary - beach and hut

How long to stay on Asu Island

A few days on Asu Island would be sufficient, right?

Boy, were we wrong!

We ended up staying for 12 days and could have easily spent a couple of nights more in paradise.

Some people come just for a night or two while some (like us) end up staying far longer.

Other ideas for your Sumatra itinerary

Banda Aceh is the capital city of Aceh province in Sumatra’s northernmost part and a popular stop for many tourists visiting North Sumatra.

It is known as Indonesia’s strictest city in terms of practising Islam , but also for being the gateway to some great snorkelling at Weh Island.

Marketed as an elephant sanctuary , many people arrive at Tangkahan thinking they’re supporting elephant rehabilitation.

Journey of a nomadic family called it a “ glorified prison abuse centre” and we have read many reviews sharing those sentiments.

Avoid this place at all costs, no matter what the guides tell you.

Our original plan was to visit Asu Island for a few days and then spend about a week exploring Nias Island as well.

Alas, we didn’t – but Nias looks like it might have a lot in store for the adventure-traveller.

There are a lot of beaches, and the locals seemed super friendly and eager to cater to tourists.

Check out Visit Nias Island for tips on visiting Nias.

Nias' coastline

There are a lot of islands outside Sumatra, and choosing between them can be difficult.

Apart from the Hinako Islands (of which Asu Island is one) and Nias Island, also check out Simeulue Island , the Banyak Islands and the Mentawai Islands .

Padang is the gateway to West Sumatra and from here you can reach lots of beaches and islands.

Also check out Mount Kerinci (Sumatra’s tallest volcano), Kerinci Seblat National Park and the Sianok Valley .

indonesia travel sumatera utara

How long to stay in North Sumatra

We spent three weeks in North Sumatra alone and had we had the time (or the visa needed!), we could have easily found amazing things to do for at least a few weeks more.

If you just want to see wild orangutans , you can get by with just a few days in Bukit Lawang .

But once you’ve made the trip all the way to Sumatra, why not discover what else the island has to offer?

Adding two or three nights in Berastagi for a volcano trek and for visiting Sipiso Piso Waterfall is a no-brainer if you’re into hiking and natural attractions.

Samosir Island in Lake Toba isn’t far away, so consider relaxing there for a few days as well.

Victoria trekking back down Sibayak

If you have less than a week , we would choose just two locations (Orangutans + Berastagi or Lake Toba).

  • Day 1 : Arrive in Medan. Drive towards Bukit Lawang. Sleep in Bukit Lawang.
  • Day 2 : Go on an orangutan trek in the rain forest. Sleep in the jungle.
  • Day 3 : Return to Bukit Lawang after the trek and sleep here.
  • Day 4 : Transport from Bukit Lawang to Berastagi or Samosir Island.
  • Day 5 : Hike a volcano or relax on Samosir Island.
  • Day 6 : See a waterfall or relax on Samosir Island.
  • Day 7 : Drive back towards Medan.

With two weeks , you can add in a third location – and even cram in some days on a tropical island if you’re travelling swiftly.

Two week itinerary (slow-ish):

  • Day 1 : Arrive in Medan. Spend a night in the city.
  • Day 2 : Drive towards Bukit Lawang. Sleep in Bukit Lawang.
  • Day 3 : Go on an orangutan trek in the rain forest. Sleep in the jungle.
  • Day 4 : See even more orangutans. Sleep in the jungle again.
  • Day 5 : Return to Bukit Lawang after the trek and sleep here.
  • Day 6 : Transport from Bukit Lawang to Berastagi.
  • Day 7 : Hike Sibayak volcano and relax in the hot springs.
  • Day 8 : Take a slow day in Berastagi. Visit the fruit market.
  • Day 9 : Drive to Sipiso Piso on the way to Samosir Island.
  • Day 10 : Relax on Samosir Island in Lake Toba.
  • Day 11 : Relax on Samosir Island in Lake Toba.
  • Day 12 : Rent a scooter and tour Samosir Island.
  • Day 13 : Relax and soak the last sun rays.
  • Day 14 : Drive back towards Medan.

Two week itinerary (fast pace with an added island):

  • Day 4 : Transport from Bukit Lawang to Berastagi.
  • Day 5 : Hike Sibayak volcano and relax in the hot springs.
  • Day 6 : Drive to Sipiso Piso on the way to Samosir Island.
  • Day 7 : Relax on Samosir Island in Lake Toba.
  • Day 8 : Relax on Samosir Island in Lake Toba.
  • Day 9 : Rent a scooter and tour Samosir Island.
  • Day 10 : Transport to a tropical island (Asu Island, for example).
  • Day 11 : Relax on a tropical island.
  • Day 12 : Relax on a tropical island.
  • Day 13 : Relax on a tropical island.
  • Day 14 : Head back towards Medan.

If you plan to spend your whole 1-month Indonesian visa in Sumatra alone, you can afford to travel slower and venture even further off the beaten path.

Think about what made you want to travel to Sumatra in the first place – and do even more of that.

A month can afford you to visit more remote places and travel much cheaper. Make your itinerary unique and you’ll get to discover untold bounties in this beautiful part of the world.

Asu Island waters

Remember: Sumatra is huge and travel times quickly add up .

After a five hour ride, you (probably) won’t want to have other activities planned for the day than just checking in at your hotel and eating a meal or two to replenish your energies for the following day.

The harbour at Parapat. A usual stop on a Sumatra itinerary

Getting around North Sumatra by public transport is totally do-able and quite cheap.

But from what we heard, the money you save by going public instead of private may not make up for the hassle and extra time you’ll spend waiting around.

We mainly opted for the “ tourist busses ” which are just bigger cars or minivans.

No matter what type of transport you choose, the roads are quite crazy and people drive fast .

Road on Samosir Island in Lake Toba

Sumatra can be really cheap to visit and even if you do your best to splurge, you won’t find too many expensive luxury options around (except perhaps in Medan).

We paid between IDR 20k and 40k for most main meals per person (~ 1.4 USD to 2.8 USD / 1.3 EUR to 2.6 EUR).

Most nights, we paid around IDR 150k for a room with a double bed , fan, shower and electricity (~ 10.6 USD / 9.5 EUR).

Sample transport prices (private):

  • Medan to Bukit Lawang : IDR 190k (~ 13.5 USD / 12 EUR)
  • Bukit Lawang to Berastagi : IDR 170k (~ 12 USD / 10.7 EUR)
  • Parapat to Samosir Island (by boat) : IDR 20k (~ 1.4 USD / 1.3 EUR)
  • Parapat to Medan : IDR 130k (~ 9 USD / 8 EUR)

Read our guide to Asu Island for the full breakdown of transport prices there.

Sumatra’s tourist high season is between June and August .

We visited North Sumatra in the middle of July and had great weather for most of the time. We didn’t think that visiting in the high season felt overly touristic at any point.

It generally rains a lot in the north from October to January and from November to February in the south.

Bukit Lawang is pretty rainy all year round but driest in the summer.

Rainforest sunset drone perspective

  • Good shoes with a hard sole will be nice to have for jungle and volcano treks.
  • Warm clothes . We both wore long socks, long pants, a t-shirt, a sweater/fleece and a rain jacket to Sibayak.
  • A refillable water bottle (adlink) .
  • Sun protection ; a hat, sunglasses and an eco-friendly sunscreen (adlink) will come in handy for the harsh Sumatran sun.
  • Swimming shorts , swimsuit and/or bikini .
  • A quality camera . You’ll really want to photograph Sumatra’s amazing nature. Here’s a guide to the camera, lens, drone and more we use on our travels .
  • Extra tip: Consider buying a local sim card with data as wifi can be scarce in places. You can buy one when you arrive in Medan.

indonesia travel sumatera utara

Sumatra isn’t really on the digital nomad radar in Southeast Asia.

We can understand why. On the surface, it’s very Indonesian . As opposed to Bali, for example, which is so dominated (in some parts) by western tourism.

But if you prefer nasi goreng to smoothie bowls, Sumatra just might be the thing for you.

We didn’t spend any real time in Medan , but there’s probably cheap rent to be had in new condos with great facilities. We have no reason to believe that wifi shouldn’t be super fast. Medan is well-connected to huge parts of Asia.

If you don’t need too many amenities, staying on Samosir Island in Lake Toba for weeks or even months sounds like a wonderful time. Not much happens, but the climate is mild, the food is good and the views are stunning.

Puppies on beach with Victoria

With all this talk of volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis it begs the question: Is Sumatra (and North Sumatra) dangerous to visit?

In short… Yes.

Sumatra probably is a tad more dangerous to visit than many other places in the world.

The longer answer can be summed up by saying that travelling always carries certain risks .

Some of these risks may be more prevalent in Sumatra than in other places.

Volcanoes and earthquakes

Volcano eruptions and earthquakes do occur occasionally in Sumatra.

You can, of course, never know for certain exactly when there will be an eruption.

Our take is that if you stay away from exclusion zones and head the advice of the government, you’ll most likely be fine.

Millions of people live on this spectacular island peacefully and will continue to do so.

The biggest risk of visiting North Sumatra is more likely that you’ll fall in love with the magnificent landscapes, beautiful islands, varied flora and fauna, kind people and interesting culture – and never want to leave!

If you’re considering visiting Sumatra (or Indonesia in general) and wonder if you’ll feel safe travelling around, we can only say that during our three months in Indonesia in total, we felt very safe and comfortable.

The Indonesian roads are a much bigger threat to your safety than a volcano can ever be…

Indonesians are wonderful people, and whatever risks the natural world may present is made up a thousand-fold by nature here being downright incredible at the same time.

Hi Victoria and Alexander Compliments! The best report what I found in the net about Sumatra. We will stay in this august one month in Sumatra. As in Europe in this moment are serious problems with the airlines, we can’t book right now the connection flight from Giacarta to Medan because we do not know if we arrive in time. My question is…..do you think we can book the jungle trekking when we arrive in bukit lawang or absolutely we have to book it before arriving? Thank you for yr kindly response and good luck for yr future

Hi Monika, thank you so much for your kind words. We’re glad to hear that our guide has been helpful! Regarding booking the jungle trekking on arrival, we have no reason to think that this shouldn’t be possible. Of course, if you want to be 100% sure that there’s an available spot on a specific day, booking ahead is advisable. But even if everything is full, we think that the trekking guys in Bukit Lawang will probably get creative and help you to the best of their abilities when you arrive. Have a lovely time!

Hi, Thanks so much for your information. We are considering going to Sumatra in late September/ October with our two kids (3/5). Do you think it would be a good place to visit as a family? We’ll be in Indonesia/Asia for about 5 Months. You didn’t mention having to cover up as a woman. Was this not something that was required a lot of the time? Thanks so much!

Hi Vicky, Thanks a lot for your comment. We can definitely recommend visiting Sumatra if you’re up for an adventure. We didn’t travel with kids so we can’t comment much on that, but apart from the traffic (and volcanoes!), we felt very safe. It’s such a beautiful part of the world full of natural diversity and splendour. Just keep in mind that the infrastructure isn’t amazing.

Being predominantly Muslim, dressing modestly when visiting Sumatra is recommended. When we sunbathed on Asu Island and Samosir Island though, bikinis were not a problem at all. Victoria didn’t cover her hair or anything like that but we would double-check that if we were visiting the northernmost part (Aceh).

Enjoy and have a fantastic time in Asia!

Thank you Victoria and Alex for this blog. I used it extensively to plan my recent 12 day Nth Sumatran trip, and everything you mention is spot on 👌🏻. Congrats on the baby news, hopefully this will only be a small pause in your travel plans. Graeme and Laura.

Thanks so much Graeme and Laura! That is super awesome to hear. And thank you so much – yes, we’ll probably slow down a little and then take it from there 😉

Indonesia Travel Guide

North Sumatra 7 Days / 1 Week Itinerary – Medan, Berastagi, Lake Toba

Planning an itinerary for Sumatra can be tough as it is not as firmly on the tourist trail compared to many other places in Indonesia, for example, Bali or Java and so it can be difficult to know what to do there and where to go. Planning the itinerary for Sumatra is also no easy feat but don’t worry as our itinerary will fit in some of the must visit places in Sumatra , fitting them all in one week.

In this itinerary, you will find yourself covering the 3 main tourist locations of Sumatra that are interlinked to your convenience. They are Medan , the main city and where you most likely fly into, Berastagi, the Karo highlands of rice fields and the famous Lake Toba , the largest volcano lake in the world with arguably the best tourist facilities in Sumatra.

Here is a suggested itinerary that you can tailor according to your own preferences for your 7 days in Sumatra.

Suggested time: 2 days Connects to Berastagi (2 hours) or Lake Toba (5 hours)

Medan is not typically thought of as a tourist destination by international travelers who used it simply as an entry and exit point to move on to other places. The domestic market in Indonesia, however, sees things very differently and Medan is known as the culinary capital of Indonesia.

Day 1 – Medan sightseeing and food

Tjong A Fie Mansion was a relative of the better known Cheong Fatt Tze who lived in Penang and built the gorgeous Cheong Fatt Tze mansion. This is one of Medan’s few real attractions and is definitely worth a trip to see how people would have lived in 1900. It’s also near to Kesawan Square, a great option if you are looking for some authentic Medanese food.

Addres: 105 Jl. Jend. A. Yani, Kesawan, Medan Bar, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20111; Telephone: 0813 6120 3998. Opening hours: 9 am to 5 pm.

Soto Kesawan is located just across from Tjong A Fie Mansion so it makes sense to combine the two. You will need to get here before 4 pm however as they shut up shop after that. This small cafe is famous for its Soto, a soup made with coconut milk and filled with juicy prawns.

Address: Jl. Ahmad Yani, Kesawan, Medan Bar, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara Telephone: 20236; 061 4514518 Opening hours: 7 am to 4 pm.

Day 2 – Medan Mosques and Palaces

Mesjid Raya Al Mashun is the great mosque of Medan and is known for its great beauty and imported building materials. You will see glittering green tiles here as well as graceful black domes and pretty stained glass and marble floors. Make sure to dress modestly if you are going to visit.

Address: Jl. Sisingamangaraja, No. 1, Medan Kota, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara Telephone: 20212; 061 4512555.

Istana Maimun is the royal palace that used to belong to the Sultanate of Deli. Now it has been turned into a museum and you can also catch a traditional band here that play local tunes every day at 10 am.

Address: Jl. Sultan Ma’moen Al Rasyid No. 66, Medan Maimun, A U R, Medan Maimun, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20151. Opening hours: 8 am to 5 pm.

Merdeka Walk – If you are looking for dinner in Medan but can’t decide what to get then consider a trip to Merdeka Walk. Here you will find a long strip that has a range of stalls selling all kinds of dishes from noodles, to rice, to soups, to desserts.

Address: Jl. Balai Kota, Medan Barat, Kesawan, Medan Bar, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20236. Opening hours: Some places here are open 24 hours a day.

Moving on from Medan, you have two options:

How to get to Berastagi – Take a bus from the main bus station on Jalan SM Raja that will take you directly to Berastagi. The trip takes about 2 hours.

If you want to skip Berastagi then you can also take a bus directly to Lake Toba from Medan which takes around 5/6 hours.

Suggested time: 2 days Connects to Medan (2 hours) or Lake Toba (4/5 hours)

From Medan, you can easily move on to Berastagi, home of the Karo people with just a 2 hours bus ride. One of the highlights of Berastagi is picking your own fruit like oranges and strawberries at one of the local farms, although you need to be there when the fruit is ripening so it’s best to check when you are actually in Berastagi.

Day 3 – Berastagi volcano mountain

Gunung Sibayak is a dormant volcano has a large crater at the top from which gas still erupts. There are also hot springs here where you can soak in the naturally warm thermal waters. It is about a 7 kilometer walk to the top.

Day 4 – Berastagi waterfall

Sipiso-piso Waterfall – This is one of the best spots in Berastagi and you can see all the way to Lake Toba from here. You can catch a mini bus called an angkot straight from Berastagi to the waterfall or hire a motorbike and head out there on your own.

Moving on from Berastagi, we head on to Lake Toba.

How to get to Lake Toba – You will need to take a mini-bus to Siantar which takes about 3 hours and then another bus to Parapat which takes about 1 hour. It’s then a short ferry ride across to Tuk Tuk, the main island in Lake Toba.

Suggested time: 2 days Connects to Berastagi (4/5 hours) or Medan (5/6 hours)

Lake Toba is a gem in the region of Sumatra and has a crater lake that sits in a dormant volcano. It’s also the largest crater lake in the world and sits next to the charming island of Tuk Tuk.

Day 5 – Enjoy Lake Toba and Tuk tuk village

Enjoy the lake – One of the reasons people come to Lake Toba is the lake, so make sure that you enjoy all that it has to offer. You can indulge in a range of water sports here and can tour the lake in a speedboat. For something a little more relaxing you can simply float here in a rubber tube.

Visit Tuk Tuk – The village of Tuk Tuk is charming and is also the home of a Batak cemetery. Here you will find amazing carved graves Batak kings which are in the shape of traditional Batak houses, so make sure to give this a miss to get an insight into Batak culture.

Day 6 – Explore Lake Toba island

Tuk Tuk is covered in a range of attractions and due to its size, you can see most of them in a day. The best option is to hire a car and driver or a motorbike to whizz around the island.

Day 7 – Back to Medan

Getting back to Medan, completing the loop of Medan , Berastagi and Lake Toba in Sumatra. Here you can choose to head onwards north to Bukit Lawang for the Orangutan trek or the interesting city Banda Aceh or go for diving at Pulau Weh.

North Sumatra

For many visitors, the northern part of Sumatra bordering Aceh is their primary focus. With good air connections to Medan, from here you can trek in search of orang-utans in Bukit Lawang, climb volcanoes from Berastagi, laze away on the shores of Danau Toba, skim the waves off the Banyaks and Nias, and easily venture further north to Pulau Weh or south to Padang and the Mentawais.

Travelling Sumatra in 2024: Everything You Need to Know (Insider’s Travel Guide and Tips)

Travel to Sumatra, Indonesia is the adventure of a lifetime, but it can be hard to plan ahead when there isn’t much info out there on the web.

Our Sumatra travel guide is here to enhance your travels, alleviate your nerves, and answer all the burning questions you have about exploring this incredible destination.

What’s the best sim card to buy?  When should you visit? What’s the weather like?  What visa do you need?  How the heck do you use a bum-gun!?

Don’t worry, my friend; we’ve got you covered. We’ve been there, done that, and sometimes learned the hard way, so you don’t have to.

So, let’s dive right in and show you how to travel to Sumatra.

This blog was originally published in 2018 and updated in June 2023 to ensure accuracy.

How big is sumatra.

Sumatra is the largest island within Indonesia, with an area of 473,481 km2 (294,207 miles).

To put that into perspective, the United Kingdom is only 242,495 km2 (150,679 miles), so this one island of Indonesia is almost twice as big as that entire area!

Image of the shape of Sumatra Island in pink overlaid by the United Kingdom in purple, showing the relative sizes of each

How Many People Live in Sumatra?

An estimate from 2021 stated that just over 59 million people call Sumatra home. Compare this again to the UK (at half the land area) with a population of 66 million-ish people and you’ll see that there’s quite a lot of room to move in Sumatra.

Where is Sumatra?

Located in wonderful, eclectic, exotic Indonesia, the top half of Sumatra’s east coast is just a stone’s throw from Singapore or the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur (around a one hour flight to each city).

From the southern tip, you could practically swim across to Java – home ofIndonesia’s capital, Jakarta — although obviously, we don’t recommend trying it.

The equator passes almost smack through the middle of Sumatra, and Pulau Weh (also known as Sabang) — the small island off the northern tip Sumatra in Aceh province — actually marks Kilometer Nol  –the northernmost point of Indonesia.

What are the Different Regions of Sumatra?

Because it’s just so darn big, Sumatra is divided up into seven different provinces and one autonomous province (Aceh).

Each has its own local governance and attractions, however, the province of North Sumatra is by far the most populated and attracts the most international tourists. It is also home to the huge, chaotic city of Medan, where most people enter Sumatra via Kualanamu International Airport.

  • North Sumatra (Sumatera Utara)
  • West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat)
  • South Sumatra (Sumatera Selatan)

What is Sumatra Famous For?

Tourists usually come in search of the natural wonders on offer: orangutans and other iconic wildlife, pristine jungles and steamy volcanoes.

Unfortunately, Sumatra also has the unwanted honour of having the highest rate of forest loss in the WORLD , losing an estimated 40% of old-growth forest over the last 20 years.

This island is also rich in natural treasures, it’s famous for its high-quality coffee, and a slew of agricultural products like rubber, tea, tobacco, palm oil (ugh) and more. There’s also petrol, gas, coal, gold, silver and other goodies to be had.

What is the Best TIme to Visit Sumatra?

A shot taken of turqouise water with forest covered islands in the distance

Perched on the equator, Sumatra is a true tropical island — just a really, really big one! There are only two seasons: wet and dry.

Officially, the wet season is from October to April, so naturally, dry season is from May to September.

To get a little more accurate, in the north, you can typically expect the most rain between October to January, and in the south, November to February.

The average temperature throughout the year is 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 F)

Having said this, bear in mind that times are a-changing (thanks global warming!) Living as locals in Sumatra, we’ve noticed that the lines between the seasons are blurring. In the last few years, it’s been rather unpredictable.

The good news is that it doesn’t really matter too much. Even in wet season, you will seldom see days where it rains all day. More often, you get an hour or two of torrential rain in the late afternoon and evening and can carry on as normal before that.

The added bonus is that the wet season is usually accompanied by some truly spectacular thunderstorms for a bit of holiday excitement.

Here’s a super secret tip for you: rainforests (and areas adjacent) see more rain! Shocking, we know. Be prepared for a bit more rain in these regions, although, again, you’ll usually be able to find plenty of non-rainy time to get out and about.

One thing to note, dry season does make for a bit of an easier journey if you’re heading to places where the roads aren’t quite so good, which is pretty much everywhere outside of the big cities.

In a nutshell, Sumatra is hot and humid most of the year. Sometimes there’ll be more rain bucketing down than you ever imagined possible, while at other times, the rivers will dry up to trickles, but you’ll seldom be cold, unless you are heading for higher-altitude areas.

For more in-depth info about the weather, seasons, public holidays, and other things that may affect your holiday, head over and read our blog, Best Time to Visit Sumatra.

How to Travel Around Sumatra?

A ferry crossing Lake Toba in North Sumatra

Did we mention that Sumatra is big? Travellers to Sumatra often underestimate the distances between each destination. Coupled with bad roads and vast areas of impenetrable jungle, there’s no such thing as a quick road trip here.

As a side note, mentally prepare yourself for a good dose of very well-managed chaos. For a first-timer, a road trip in Sumatra can be a bit of a fist (and buttock) clenching experience. Road rules don’t seem to apply and traffic lights are often decorative only.

But somehow, it works! Try to relax in the knowledge that your driver knows exactly what they’re doing, but chuck that seatbelt on just in case.

If you’re hoping to see as much of Sumatra as possible, flying is going to be your best bet to optimize your time. Of course, it’s possible to travel the length and breadth by car or bus; you’ll literally be doing overnighters or longer, often on less than ideal buses that crawl along bumpy roads.

Domestic flights are pretty affordable and a much quicker way to get from A to B, but it’s up to you lah!

Airports in Sumatra

Medan is the entry point for most visitors to Sumatra, via Kuala Namo International Airport (KNO) — a slick, modern port of entry. But there are plenty of other airports scattered around the island, most of which have good international links, including

  • Medan (Kuala Namu)
  • Lake Toba (Silangit)
  • Batam (Hang Nadim)
  • Pekanbaru (Sultan Syarif Kasim II)
  • Palembang (Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II)
  • Padang (Minangkabau)
  • Banda Aceh (Sultan Iskandar Muda)

Then there are smaller airports which accept flights from Jakarta and selected other airports, including:

  • Bandar Lampung
  • Tanjungpinang
  • Tanjung Pandan
  • Pangkalpinang

TOP TIP: We use Skyscanner when travelling in Sumatra and beyond.  Click here to find the cheapest flights to your destinations with Skyscanner.

Getting to Sumatra by Boat

You can reach Sumatra from other islands in Indonesia or from Malaysia by ferry.

The major port is Dumai in Riau; here, you can get your visa on arrival needs sorted.

In the spirit of honesty, this isn’t something that we’ve done much research on, but if you’re a seafaring adventurer, let us know and we’ll help you out – or help us out and share your experiences with us!

Travelling Sumatra by Car

By far the most comfortable and enjoyable way to travel around Sumatra is by private car. Bummer that it’s also the most expensive way.

If you have the budget to hire a car and a driver, we recommend it; you get the convenience of stopping where you want, when you want, the journey is quicker than on a bus, and most drivers are super nice, friendly and act as your own personal tour guide.

If you are stuck looking for a driver, hit us up , we will do our best to sort you out!

Some popular routes have shared cars available, a much more budget-friendly option. Ask at your guest house or check out our specific location guides for more information.

Taxis in Sumatra

Getting around by taxi in the bigger cities is a relatively budget-friendly option. We recommend using the blue, Bluebird taxis – they use a meter system and, in our experience, we’ve never been ripped off by this company.

Note that most drivers don’t speak English, so you’ll need to have your destination written down clearly so they understand. Cities like Medan are chaotic and sprawling.

If you’re heading somewhere that isn’t super well known, you may find yourself guiding your driver using Google maps on your phone.

Grab and Gojek in Sumatra

These services are amazing and make life in Sumatra (in fact, most of Indonesia) so much simpler. Unfortunately, they are really only available in some of the bigger cities, but if you find yourself needing a cheap, reliable way to get around the city, this is it.

Both utilize a smartphone app system, where you input your pick up and drop off point, get a quote (always dirt cheap) and then track your driver as he or she comes to pick you up.

You can choose from motorbike or car options. This is our absolute go-to method for getting around big cities like Medan. It’s much cheaper and safer than a taxi.

All you need to do is download the Grab or Go Jek app and you’ll find it simple to use.

Download Grab

Download Go Jek

Travelling Sumatra by Bus

Almost anywhere where you want to go, you will be able to find a bus to get there. But fair warning — it’s not easy to find any kind of information.

We’d love to publish a full bus schedule covering even the main routes in Sumatra, but it doesn’t reallllly work like that here.

Well established routes — for example, Medan to Lake Toba or Bukit Lawang — have more regular schedules and better quality buses, but try to do a bit of research before you head out.

We love the friendly people of Sumatra, but of course there are some out there looking to make a buck or two extra out of unsuspecting tourists.

Do your best to suss out the going rate for bus tickets before you get on the bus.

Check out our individual location guides for more specific info on buses. Failing that, you can usually get relatively accurate, up to date information if you have booked with a local hotel or guesthouse.

There are overnight sleeper buses for long distances.

Travelling Sumatra by Local Bus or Becak (Motorcycle Taxi)

There are local buses — more like minivans — that get around some of the cities and villages; they are known as angkots. If you want to truly live like a local, jump on with the chickens, sacks of rice, and squeeze into a space. If you’re lucky, they may be blaring out some dangdut music – Indonesia’s unique disco/techno combo!

A cheap and cheerful way to get around is to jump on a becak. This is a motorbike with a comfy side car attached. In Thailand, it’s known as a tuktuk, but in Sumatra, Tuktuk is the place where you’ll be staying on Samosir Island in Lake Toba; try not to confuse the two!

Currency and Money in Sumatra

In line with the rest of Indonesia, Sumatra uses Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Most of us will find the money a tad confusing, purely because there are a lot more zeros than we are used to!

Enjoy the difference, it is probably the only time in your life you’ll be an actual millionaire.

Exchange rates as of June 2023

How Much Do Things Cost in Sumatra?

Because of exchange rates, most of the western world, and a large part of the rest, will find Indonesia super affordable.

As a guideline, check out the generalized pricelist below, bearing in mind that prices vary from area to area, just so you can get an idea.

  • Nasi goreng (fried rice) – 15,000 – 25,000
  • Large beer Bintang – 40,000 – 50,000
  • Budget room (out of the big city) – 100,000 – 150,000
  • 5-star hotel room 1,000,000+
  • Large bottle of water – 8,000 – 10,000
  • Souvenir t-shirt – 80,000 – 150,000
  • Cup of coffee – 4,000 – 6,000

ATMs in Sumatra

The general rule of thumb when travelling Sumatra is this: when you have a chance to withdraw money, do it!

Once you’re out of the main cities, you’ll be hard pressed to find ATMs. And from experience, more often than not, the ones you do find (after traveling by motorbike for hours on a terrible road) are out of order.

Bring rupiah before you arrive. There are money changers around the place -including Medan airport – but not all of them are above a bit of a rip-off.

The main banks with ATMs that accept credit cards for withdrawls are:

  • Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI)
  • Bank Mandiri
  • Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI)

Depending on your card and banking rules, you may be faced with considerable fees when you withdraw money, so it’s best to withdraw the maximum amount possible every time, which is generally 2.5 million rupiah.

If you want to get the maximum, you’ll need to look for a machine that has a sticker saying 100,000 on the front. This means it gives out 100,000 rupiah notes, and usually has a higher maximum withdrawl than those with the 50,000 sticker.

It is possible to withdraw multiple times from the same machine, but keep in mind your bank may have associated fees.

TOP TIP: Sign up for a free Wise account to manage your money while travelling! We use this all the tie and would be lost without it.

Wise allows you to send money in various currencies, convert between currencies, and even offers a credit card that works throughout Sumatra (with the exception of Aceh).

Click here to get your Wise account set up today.

Do I Need to Tip in Sumatra?

Tipping isn’t a  hard and fast rule as you’d find in the United States, but there are some situations in which it is expected – and a nice thing to do.

It’s not really necessary in accommodations or restaurants, but if you feel like doing it, go for it.

If you enlist the services of a local guide in your travels, we do recommend tipping. Often, this is the only form of income for the guides, and it can be hard for them to make enough for their families to survive – particularly as Sumatra is not a thriving tourist hub.

You can tip as generously as you like, but as a guideline, we suggest a minimum tip of 100,000 – 150,000 to your guide if you do a half or one-day trip with them.

In some areas, the staff at your guest house or the restaurant you eat at may be working there without a wage (or below minimum wage). With limited employment opportunities in small villages, this is their opportunity to learn English and learn the skills that will help them get a job later in life.

If you find they’ve been helpful, entertaining, or just generally awesome (as most are) feel free to give them a tip. The same goes for drivers.

What is Sumatran Food Like?

Rice and mixed vegetables on a banana leaf and brown paper

In general, Indonesian food is fresh, tasty and spicy, spicy hot – and Sumatra specialty dishes pack just as much punch!

Rice and noodles are staple foods, mixed with a variety of vegetables, meats and egg. Food ranges from curries and stews to nasi goreng (fried rice) and satay.

The most famous Sumatran dish is rendang – a slow cooked beef dish that is unforgettable!

In many of the bigger restaurants and hotels in the tourist spots, you’ll find a pretty good variety of Western food, but once you’re out of the city, you’ll be hard-pressed to find so much as a loaf of bread.

Dairy is scarce here – so prepare yourself for a holiday without cheese and milk (again, unless you stick to the tourist areas).

The most common meats used in cooking are chicken and fish. Beef is available, but not readily so; again, you’ll find it in tourist areas and bigger cities.

Muslims are not permitted to eat pig products, so you may struggle to find pork in some areas; however, it’s still around.

Top tip: If you have a slightly delicate stomach that can’t handle spicy food, simply ask for “tidak pedas” (not spicy) dishes. They will still be full of mouth-water flavours, just without the eye-watering kick!

Can I Find Vegetarian or Vegan Food in Sumatra?

As a vegetarian living in Sumatra, Carly has never had a problem finding meat-free meals.

Tofu and tempeh are readily available at all the warungs, and there’s a wide range of veggies to keep dishes hearty and filling.

Being vegan is just as easy: because dairy isn’t a commonly consumed food type, you’ll have no trouble avoiding it. Eggs do tend to be thrown into most dishes though, so make sure you specify “tidak telur” (no egg) to make it clear.

Enjoy a coconut milk-based curry, tofu sambal (tofu and rice with rich tomato sauce) or Gado Gado  – a delicious peanut satay dish served with tofu and veggies (and often eggs).

The more off the beaten path you get, the more fresh and tasty the food is. Head to jungle areas and experience amazing jungle food – eat banana tree curry and jungle ferns – it doesn’t get much better than that!

Our Top Sumatran Food Recommendations

Our favourite treats in Sumatra are pergedel – a delicious sweet potato cake found at most places – and gorengan.

Gorengan is a mixture of different battered and fried things, such as bananas, vegetable fritters, and tofu.

We also highly recommend trying ayam semur (chicken in a tasty soy curry) and traditional beef rendang.

Pergedel

Can I Buy and Drink Alcohol in Sumatra?

In many areas of Sumatra, beer is readily available. There’s often only one type on offer, but luckily, it’s an extremely good one!

Bintang is the brew of choice wherever you go. You might find some other offerings in popular areas, but Bintang is the cheapest and tastiest – in our humble opinion! We love it!

If you’re after spirits, your best bet is to bring them in duty-free; however, the airport only allows one 500mL bottle, so you’ll have to make it last!

You can buy spirits and wine in some areas – major supermarkets in Medan and selected other spots throughout Sumatra – but again, these are usually pretty pricey.

Your best bet? Ask a local guide – they’ll know the best way to get it.

A gentle word of warning : be mindful of where you are. Stricter Muslim areas such as Aceh (including Pulau Weh) and Padang do not permit the consumption of alcohol. It is not sold (at least not openly) and is quite difficult to get.

Although Westerners are sometimes given a free pass for this kind of thing, we suggest it’s better to abstain or drink it quietly in the privacy of your guesthouse if they have it on offer.

Beer Bintang

What is Tuak?

Tuak is the local drink of choice. It’s known as “palm wine” although has very little in common with actual wine!

Fermented from the fruit of a palm tree (different from the palm oil trees), it can be a potent brew and may take a little getting used to. I’m told that after your third glass, it grows on you, but I’ve been unable to get through even one, so I may never know!

Tuak is super cheap and often purchased in plastic bags and drunk by the village men by the jug load.

A beer glass filled with tuak (light brown/cream liquid)

Healthcare in Sumatra

Bring your essential medications with you, but ensure they are in containers labelled with your name and bring a copy of your prescription, just in case!

If you do run out, there are pharmacies (apoteks) in most areas that might be able to fill your script, but don’t count on it.

You can buy things like cold and flu tablets, paracetamol and bits and pieces at the Indomaret (like a local 7/11 – there’s one on every corner in populated areas) or even small local shops, while antibiotics, creams, and other medicines are available at apoteks – often without a script, which comes in handy.

Medical centres and hospitals vary by location – check out individual location guides for specifics.

The bigger towns and cities will have hospitals that provide quick, efficient and affordable service. We have personal experience at  Siloam and Columbia in Medan; the basic service is affordable and fast. But bear in mind that if you wind up needing to stay at a hospital or require surgery, the costs will add up very qiuckly.

Outside of the big cities, you’ll find the odd small clinic or local hospital.

The most common complaint of travellers will be tummy upsets. Drink only bottled or thoroughly boiled water. Pack some Immodium tablets (or buy them at the local pharmacy). Charcoal tablets called Norit can be found almost everywhere and work wonders for a bout of diarrhea!

What Languages are Spoken in Sumatra?

There are 52 unique languages spoken throughout Sumatra. From Acehnese in the far north to the Minangkabau in the south.

Luckily, almost everyone you meet can speak Indonesian, and in many tourist spots, most people have a good grasp of basic English, with many speaking it fluently.

In fact, the main tourist spots boast guides that know a mind-boggling array of greetings and common words in many different languages that they’ve learned from visiting guests.

Although many people you meet will relish the opportunity to practice their English with you, they are so appreciative if you know even a few words and phrases.

We recommend making an effort to learn even a smattering of the language to forge strong connections and show respect to the places you are visiting.

Pack a mini Indonesian dictionary in your backpack, make sure you’ve got Google Translate at the ready, or take time before you travel to learn from a smartphone app.

I tried many different apps and learning methods, but the one that really helped me become more fluent was “ Duolingo .”

Cultures in Sumatra

Batak Toba dance

Like Indonesia itself, Sumatra is bursting with different cultures. Each region may have one or more “cultural groups” with totally unique languages, or even different cuisines, music, dances and customs.

From the traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle of the Mentawai people from the Mentawai Islands and the uniquely isolated culture of Nias Island to the six different Batak tribes throughout Sumatra, there is a plethora of different cultures to appreciate and uncover – far too many to go into any detail here.

What they generally have in common, however, is their strong sense of community, generosity and welcoming nature.

What Visa Do You Need for Sumatra?

At the time or writing, there is no free visa entry into Indonesia.

Instead, 72 countries are eligible for a VOA – Visa on Arrival in Indonesia.

This is easy to obtain; simply visit the VOA desk at whatever airport you use to enter Indonesia, pay 500,000 IDR (you must have cash with you, but often they do accept foreign currency), and you receive your 30-day entry.

As of 2023, there is a fantastic new option – an E-VOA  (electronic visa). This has the same rules as the 30-day VOA, but you can apply online before you head to Indonesia, and you can also renew this online.

This is a great alternative to buying your VOA when you arrive, as you don’t have to worry about fitting in multiple trips to immigration offices to extend for another 30 days during your trip!

Here’s the official Indonesian government website for applying:

https://molina.imigrasi.go.id/

If you’re planning to get the most from your 30 days and stay right up until the last day, bear in mind that the day you arrive in Indonesia counts as day one, and you must leave no later than day 30. Don’t get it wrong and assume it’s a month-long visa; you’ll have to pay a fine for every day you overstay.

Most ports of entry require proof of onward or return travel. Every time I’ve flown into Medan airport (and everyone I know of) has been asked for this. So make sure you’ve got your flight out booked and ready to show immigration.

If you don’t like to plan and don’t know exactly when you’ll be leaving Indonesia (or from where), buy the cheapest flight you can find (from Sumatra, it’s usually the Medan to Kuala Lumpur route, which you can often buy for around 300,000 IDR) – or book a ticket that you can alter or cancel.

Want to stay longer than 30 days? It’s not too complicated to stay for 60 days.

Your VOA can be extended for a further 30 days for a total of 60 days in Indonesia. Factor in several visits to an Immigration office at least a week before your first visa runs out.

If you overstay, you’ll be fined one million IDR for every extra day.

If you want to spend more time in Indonesia, you can either fly out after the 60 days is up, then re-enter and purchase another VOA.

Alternatively, there are “B211a Tourist” visas that allow you to spend up to 6 months in Indonesia. You must apply for these using an agent as your sponsor.

Is Sumatra Safe?

indonesia travel sumatera utara

Overall, Sumatra is a safe place to visit. The people are generally friendly, welcoming and protective of tourists.

However, we always recommend people invest in travel insurance, regardless of where they are heading.

We recommend SafetyWing for flexibility and affordability. Click here to check out their plans and prices.

The usual rules apply — as with all over the world — big cities are not the best places to go out at night, particularly if you’re travelling solo. Be cautious when exploring in Medan, even in the daytime — don’t carry your bag or mobile where it’s visible; snatch and grabs by passing motorbikes are common.

In the city, be polite but firm when approached by friendly locals. Be wary of stopping for a chat; many people will be generally interested in you, as they don’t see many foreigners, but there are opportunists (as with anywhere), so best to say hello and keep walking.

Don’t hang your phone or camera out the window of the car to take photos – you may “lose” it.

If you’re riding on a scooter, store your bags and valuables under the seat, do NOT wear them. This is a good general rule wherever you go.

Don’t flash your money around. Keep your “big money,” the pretty red 100,000 notes stashed somewhere else, and the “smaller money” in a separate place for making regular purchases. 100,000 is a lot of money in Sumatra and will be noticed — especially a wad of it.

General travel tip worldwide: don’t always carry all your money, passport and credit cards with you. If your bag gets stolen, you’re in trouble. Keep emergency money and a spare credit card stashed back in your hotel room. Always store money in a few different spots.

Smaller villages tend to be very safe places. People are respectful, and your belongings SHOULD be safe. But take normal precautions as you would at home.

If you’re travelling by scooter, it’s better to wear a helmet. Although there’s not much police presence in smaller villages and the attitude is pretty relaxed, you could face a fine if the police decide to pick on you that day. Plus, there are some crazy drivers and roads, to better to be safe than sorry.

How to Buy a Local SIM Card in Sumatra

Telkomsel sim card

On arrival to Sumatra (or anywhere in Indonesia), you can buy a local SIM – although it’s not as straightforward as it once was!

Before you can use a local SIM in your foreign phone, you need to register your phone/SIM using your passport.

You can only do this at a Telkomsel Grapari shop, so make sure you visit one at the airport or in a bigger city before heading off on your travels.

There are a few providers, but the most widely used option with the best service is Telkomsel.

A new SIM can set you back between 30,000 IDR to 70,000, depending on the data and pulsa included.

When you buy your SIM, you can also buy data or calling/texting bundles.

Prices vary, but as an example, right now around 5GB of internet data costs about 35,000 IDR.

How to Top Up Your Data and Credit (pulsa).

Visit any vendor and give them your number to buy a data package or pulsa. Prices and promotions vary in different times and places.

Alternatively, download the Telkomsel app to your phone so you can quickly see how much data and credit you have.

Dos and Don't When Travelling Sumatra

Sumatran people pride themselves on being polite and respectful – to each other and tourists. Therefore, most of the dos and don’ts are based on politeness.

If you do forget some of these, it’s not the end of the world, and you won’t be chased out of the village; just general guidelines to help you respect their customs.

  • Don’t use your left hand when shaking hands, high-fiving, giving or receiving money or items. Why? Indonesians use their left hand to clean up after going to the toilet. Even though they obviously wash their hands after, the left hand is considered to be “dirty” and it’s very impolite.
  • Don’t touch anyone’s head! This includes ruffling the hair of cute little kids. It’s not polite and may cause offence!
  • Don’t put your feet on tables or chairs or touch people with your feet.
  • Don’t go overboard with kissing, touching, and public displays of affection. Depending on where you are, a little peck  may be okay, but keep it at that. Sumatran people believe this should be kept private. Even Indonesian TV shows are not allowed to show people kissing – even a light peck. Particularly important in strict Muslim areas such as the Aceh province.
  • Don’t be offended or shocked if people ask you quite personal questions. They are generally interested in you and want to know how old you are, if you’re married, if you have kids and everything else.
  • Do take your shoes off when entering someone’s house. Often, you’ll notice shoes outside a shop or restaurant too. Do as others do in this case.
  • Do shake hands when you meet someone new — or even someone you already know. You might notice that after the locals shake hands with you they will touch their hand to their chest as a sign of respect — showing that you are welcomed into their heart. (Remember right hand only!)
  • Do dress respectfully. In general, the Sumatran people dress conservatively. They don’t see a lot of foreigners, and even cleavage gets blurred out on the telly! The few tourist areas e.g. Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba are a bit more laid back, but most places it’s best to not be too risqué. Unlike Bali, it is not acceptable to walk the streets or ride a scooter in a bikini – anywhere. If travelling to strict Muslim areas, girls should wear long skirts or pants and T-shirts or long-sleeved shirts. Guys should not wear singlets. Be respectful and aware of the customs and cultures you are visiting, and dress accordingly. As a female traveller who has done a lot of solo travel in Sumatra, I prefer to cover up as much as possible to avoid unwanted attention.
  • Do accept food or drink if it’s offered to you. Again, not the end of the world, but people are trying to welcome you and show you kindness, so it’s respectful to accept when you can.
  • Do be prepared for the toilets! Most of Sumatra features squat toilets. There will be a bucket full of water with a smaller scoop inside so you can manually “flush.” Fancier toilets feature the good old “bum gun” — a water pistol fitted to a hose that power cleans your butt. Pro tip: always give a test squirt aimed at the floor first to determine the strength of the bum gun and avoid disaster.
  • Generally there wont’ be toilet paper – the waste systems aren’t equipped for it. If you feel the need to wipe, dispose of the paper in the waste basket provided. Tourist areas will have western loos that flush, if you’re lucky.

Squat toilet

Essential Words and Phrases

Many Sumatran people will know one or two English words, most commonly, “Hello,” “How are you,” “Where are you from,” “I love you,” and “Thank you.”

It’s only polite for tourists to learn one or two also.

Here are our top 10 words and phrases to use when travelling Sumatra:

  • No problem = Tidak masalah or Tidak apa apa
  • Thank you = Terima kasih
  • How are you = Apa kabar
  • I am fine = Kabar baik
  • Excuse me = Permisi
  • Where is the… = Di mana
  • My name is.. = Nama saya …
  • What is your name? = Siapa nama anda?

Sumatra is a traveller’s dream, and there’s truly something for everyone. If you want snorkelling, diving, or relaxing on a beach, trekking through a jungle, scaling a volcano or simply exploring new cultures and cuisines, you’ll find it here.

Exotic Sumatra is one of the world’s last frontiers – an island of lush tropical rainforests, extraordinary flora and fauna, and active volcanoes. Home to Sumatran tigers, rhinos and elephants and a host of dynamic ethnic groups, it is the third-largest island in Indonesia and the fifth-largest in the world (roughly the size of Sweden). It is vastly rich in natural resources: over half of the country’s exports come from the treasure trove of Sumatra’s bounty of oil, natural gas, hardwoods, rubber, palm oil, coffee and sugar.

Sumatra is a travel haven for nature-lovers, with surfing beaches and 11 national parks sheltering tigers, elephants and orangutans. There is also memorable Danau Toba, Southeast Asia’s largest lake, along with impressive architecture, and ancient megaliths. Allowing enough time here is the challenge. The thorns in the island’s side are the west coast’s susceptibility to earthquakes and tsunamis but for the intrepid traveller, the rewards are worthwhile.

Situated at the western rim of the archipelago along the Strait of Malacca, for centuries the region was the gateway for maritime trade through Southeast Asia, receiving merchants from China , India , the Middle East and Europe. The early coastal kingdoms were the entry points for foreign influence that left a lasting imprint on the very fibre of Indonesia’s culture.

Today, Sumatra is a tapestry of ethnic groups living in rural communities: in the north are the devout Muslim people of Aceh; in the northern highlands, the Christian Batak; and in the west, the matrilineal Minangkabau. The Kubu and Rimbu in the south are the last remaining forest-dwellers, while the Orang Laut (sea people) traditionally lived aboard boats and continue to ply the seas off the east coast.

You never know where your Sumatra adventure will take you, so don't set off without securing great value travel insurance from our trusted partner Heymondo .

Vast, beguiling and beautiful, there is so much to see and do in Sumatra that you could easily spend a month exploring. Engrossing North Sumatra is known for its great cultures – especially the Acehnese and the Batak – and magnificent landscapes, as well as for its wildlife and rainforests. Rugged West Sumatra is home to beautiful upland scenery, proud Minangkabau culture with its fiery cuisine, fabulous surfing and a string of fascinating offshore islands. Very few travellers make it to the southernmost regions of Sumatra, which is a shame, but the region is home to interesting towns, fine jungle and mountain landscapes, and excellent surf.

#1 Gawp at Medan’s historical buildings

Most visitors enter North Sumatra via Medan , a sprawling and crowded city stuffed with architectural gems from its colonial days. The largest concentration of such examples is found along Jalan Jendral A. Yani and around Merdeka Square. Chinese shops line Jalan A. Yani, which is also home to the Tjong A Fie Mansion, the former home of the eponymous Tjong A. Fie, who arrived in Sumatra as a poor migrant from China in the 1870s but had become a fabulously wealthy tycoon by the time of his death in 1921.

The mansion, built in the traditional Chinese style, has been beautifully restored. At the southern end of Medan’s longest street, Jalan Sisingamangaraja, stands the magnificent Istana Maimoon, constructed by an Italian architect in rococo style in 1888. One block east is the imposing Mesjid Raya (Grand Mosque). Built in 1906 to complement the palace’s architectural style, it is the city’s largest mosque.

#2 Visit Gunung Leuser National Park, Indonesia's most accessible reserve

Northwest from Medan, some three hours by road, a narrow road winds up the Alas River Valley to Gunung Leuser National Park, an 8,000- sq km (5,000-sq mile) park covered in dense jungle that is home to elephants, rhinos, sun bears, tigers, 500 bird species and orangutans. The park is both a Unesco World Heritage and a World Network of Biosphere Reserves Site.

Surrounding sputtering Gunung Leuser, 3,404 metres (11,167ft) high and Sumatra’s second-highest peak, the park reaches all the way to the west coast and is probably one of the most accessible in Indonesia.

#3 Visit Bukit Lawang

Bukit Lawang is a stunning destination located on the island of Sumatra. The town is situated in the heart of the Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. It is renowned for its Orangutan sanctuary, where visitors can witness these amazing primates up close and in their natural habitat.

Trekking through the lush rainforests and exploring the local wildlife is an unforgettable experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Besides, the town offers a variety of other activities such as white-water rafting, tubing, and visiting nearby waterfalls. The friendly local community and laid-back atmosphere make it an excellent place to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

#4 See the great apes of Bohorok Orangutan Centre

Although it no longer rehabilitates the red great apes, visitors are still welcome to Bohorok Orangutan Centre. A one-hour hike through the jungle here brings you to the platforms used for early-morning and afternoon feeding of wild and semi-wild orangutans. Permits are required from the PHKA office (take a photocopy of your passport with you). The well-run Bukit Lawang station provides comfortable lodging, decent food, and a superb visitor centre complete with slide shows and information concerning local wildlife.

#5 Sail to the revered Samosir island

Around 170km (110 miles) from Medan, on the eastern shore of Danau Toba, is tourist resort Parapat. It's all deluxe hotels, golf courses, watersports and the like. Parapat is nestled on the lake’s eastern shore, and is a favourite weekend getaway for Medan residents. The best place to experience Danau Toba’s spell, however, is Samosir, a 1,000-sq km (380-sq mile) island in the lake.

Samosir is regarded as the original home of the Bataks in Sumatra, and the Toba Batak, the ‘purest’ Batak tribe. The carved boat-like tomb of King Sidabutar is here. In an enclosure opposite the tomb are ritual statues of a buffalo sacrifice. Boats depart from Parapat for Samosir daily.

#6 Embrace Minangkabau culture in Bukittinggi

A two-hour drive from Padang north through the lush tropical Anai Valley delivers you to picturesque hilltop Bukittinggi, the heart of Minangkabau culture. Blessed with friendly people, a relaxed atmosphere and cool mountain air, Bukittinggi is the best base for visiting the surrounding Minang Highlands. Bukittinggi, which means ‘Tall Hill’, stands at 930 metres (3,050ft) and is surrounded by the Gunung Agam, Gunung Singgalang and Gunung Merapi volcanic peaks. It is a pleasant town to stroll through. The cool mountain air also enhances touring on foot.

#7 Get stoned on Nias island

The main points of interest on Nias are the traditional villages and surfing beaches, all located in the south. The largest of the west coast islands, Nias is 100km (60 miles) long by 50km (30 miles) wide, and is home to one of Southeast Asia’s most unusual ancient cultures, which revolves around stone: in architectural style, sculptures and rituals.

In its most memorable traditional dance, Fahombo, Niasan tribesmen leap feet first over stone columns several metres high.

Tutotolo is a warrior dance performed by young men leaping in combat. Niasan villages are veritable fortresses, with great stone-paved central ‘runways’. Stilt houses stand in parallel rows on hillsides, shielded by a thorny bamboo barricade from foreign attack.

#8 Sniff out the repulsive Rafflesia arnoldii at Bengkulu

The small, sleepy seaside city of Bengkulu was founded in 1685 by the British. Its fort, Benteng Marlborough, was constructed in 1713–19 and restored in the late 1970s. Old gravestones with English inscriptions can be seen in the gatehouse. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles was governor of Bengkulu from 1818 to 1823.

During his time in Sumatra local guides showed him and the botanist Joseph Arnold the vast parasitic flower known locally as padma raksasa or kerubut. Although the plant had previously been identified by a French traveller, Raffles’ account was the first made public in Europe, and today its scientific name is Rafflesia arnoldii Examples can be found at the Dendam Tak Sudah Botanical Gardens near the lake of the same name 8km (5 miles) southeast of Bengkulu.

#9 See the carved megaliths of the Pasemah Highlands

Inland is the beautiful upland Pasemah region, centred on the small town of Pagaralam. Dotting the surrounding mountain plateau are carved megaliths, tombs, pillars and other stone ruins thought to date from about AD 100. Oddly shaped rocks have been fashioned into figures of armed warriors riding elephants, wrestling buffaloes or fighting snakes. The area is dominated by volcanic Gunung Dempo, which can be climbed by hardy trekkers.

#10 Splash out on the Bintan and Batam islands

Once part of a maritime sultanate, the islands of the Riau Archipelago are now a zone of major economic activity. Batam has been developed into a major industrial satellite of Singapore and is popular with weekend visitors from there, who come for its golf courses, beaches, duty-free shopping and seafood. Ferries and hydrofoils ply the waters to and from Singapore almost hourly, from sunrise to sundown.

Bintan, meanwhile, is the largest of all the Riau islands, and its northern shore is a string of high-end resorts catering to well-heeled Singaporeans and Indonesians. The energetic Tanjungpinang port town, situated on the island’s southeastern coast, is also a jumping-off spot to nearby tiny islands and the Lingga archipelago.

#11 Explore the Hindu temple complex of Muaro Jambi

Jambi, the site of the ancient Melayu kingdom, is today a modern city. The surrounding forests are still home to a handful of Kubu people, the original hunter-gatherer inhabitants of the area, though most are now settled in modern communities. Exploration of the city starts along the river, where a large number of people live on floating rafts or in houses built on stilts over the Sungai Batanghari.

You can walk or ride on a dokar (horse-drawn cart), and visit the Pasar Raya (Central Market). The Hindu temple complex Muaro Jambi, 25km (15 miles) northeast of the city, is an hour by car or 30 minutes by speedboat.

#12 Visit the Mentawai Islands

The Mentawai Islands are an archipelago off the coast of Sumatra. These islands are a popular destination for tourists seeking a tropical paradise with pristine beaches and world-renowned surf breaks. The islands are also home to a unique culture and indigenous people who have lived on the islands for thousands of years. You can learn about the local customs and traditions by staying in traditional homestays and experiencing the daily life of the Mentawai people.

In addition to surfing and cultural experiences, you can explore the islands' lush jungle, trek to scenic waterfalls, and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

To get to the Mentawai Islands, you can travel from Sumatra to Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra province. From there, they can take a ferry or speedboat to the islands, which typically takes around 10-12 hours depending on the weather conditions.

Sumatra is littered with a wide variety of accommodations that range from beach huts and bungalows to good quality hotels and hostels in the larger cities. Booking a homestay in some of the smaller villages can be a good way to meet local people too.

North Sumatra

As the most popular area on the island, North Sumatra has the widest selection of accommodation to choose from. As well as resorts and some decent business hotels, there are numerous cheap guesthouses dotted both along the coast and further inland.

Browse the best places to stay in North Sumatra .

West Sumatra

There are some great places to stay in West Sumatra for all budget ranges. The nearby islands have seaside bungalows, whilst the rural villages have basic guesthouses and homestays. There are good hotels and a range of hostels in towns like Padang.

Browse the best places to stay in West Sumatra .

South and East Sumatra

As these regions are a little more off-the-beaten-path, the places to stay aren't quite as sophisticated. That said, Pagaralam and Palembang both have reasonable and affordable guesthouses and bigger hotels.

As with much of Indonesia’s islands, the world-class seafood served in the resorts and restaurants of Sumatra is freshly-caught and prepared. Elsewhere, the island is famed for its Minang food – spicy meals with coconut milk. Meals usually include gulai (curry), lado (chilies), and rice. Padang in West Sumatra is the place to try it.

Best places to eat in Sumatra

  • Korintji Heritage, Sungai Penuh The talented chefs at social enterprise Korintji Heritage serve up delicious lobster dishes that are covered by bumbu perancis (cheese sauce) or lada hitam (a black pepper sauce). Their coffee is excellent too.
  • Restoran Sari Raso, Padang For authentic Minang food, head straight to the town that gave it its name. This busy neighbourhood in the best around.

Most international travellers arrive in Sumatra via Medan, its largest city. Flights land at the modern Kualanamu International airport from both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur as well as from elsewhere in Indonesia.

Kualanamu International airport has short-haul international links and an extensive list of domestic connections to Palembang, Pekanbaru, Batam, Banda Aceh and Padang. Other airports with domestic connections include Bandar Lampung, Bengkulu, Jambi, Pekanbaru, Bangka and Belitung.

International ferry services have mostly been discontinued, but there are still regular speedboats for the short hop between Singapore’s Harbourfront Centra and Bintan and Batam. Ferry operators include Penguin and Dino/Batam Fast. Travellers will have to go through Immigration upon arrival at Batam.

The length of time you need to visit Sumatra could easily stretch to three weeks should you wish to see the very best of everything on the island. For most, seven days is enough here. That allows you to go orangutan trekking in Bukit Lawang, relaxing around Lake Toba, and head to Bukittinggi for a cultural side to the island. That said, once you add in the time it takes to travel between some of the smaller islands - like the hundreds of atolls off the east coast - you could easily find yourself spending two weeks here. Most, however, will only need a week.

On mainland Sumatra, there are good highway systems in the north, west and south, but in the east, travel is more difficult. The long TransSumatra Highway is gradually being upgraded along its entire length, but conditions on remote sections can sometimes still be rough, and delays due to the upgrading work itself are frequent.

For intercity journeys, pre-booked door-to-door ‘travel’ (passenger car/minibus) is the most popular option, though there is also an extensive bus network.

Buses travel across the island, including express services. Among the routes are: Medan to Banda Aceh (11 hours); Medan to Prapat (4 hours) ;Medan to Padang (18 hours); and Padang to Bukittinggi (2 hours).

There are three unlinked rail systems in Sumatra. The North line runs from Medan north to Banda Aceh and south to Rantauprapat; West, from Padang north to Bukittinggi and Payakumbuh and south to Solok and Sawah Lunto. In South Sumatra, the line begins at Tanjung Karang and runs north to Prabumulih, east to Palembang and west to Lubuklinggau. The trains that run on these routes are hot, slow and crowded, generally taking longer than buses serving the same destinations.

Generally, the best time to visit Sumatra is during the dry season, (May to September). This is when the weather is generally sunny and dry, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife spotting, and hitting the beach. Expect higher humidity, more rain and cheaper accommodation during the monsoon season (November to March). Hiking in the mountains during the wet season isn't recommended.

Pilkada Serentak 2024

Didukung golkar dan pan, menantu presiden jokowi didorong jadi calon gubernur sumatera utara, setelah sukses jadi wali kota medan, kini menantu presiden jokowi, bobby nasution didorong jadi calon gubernur sumatera utara periode 2024 - 2029., penulis: frans krowin | editor: frans krowin.

Presiden Jokowi Titip Satu Pesan
