Vegas hits the seas

Learn from experts — like our staff or perhaps other guests nearby — and put your skills to the test. More casual players can pull up a seat at the slot machines for the same adrenaline at their own speed. For an afternoon full of games, join fellow travelers for Bingo, or compete in scheduled group tournaments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORDIC CRUISES

Just in case you want to learn more about cruise packages or Nordic Visitor destinations, we’ve collected the most requested queries and answered them here. If you want details on our company and booking processes, then check out our general FAQs or booking information page .

1. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE POPULAR?

Northern Europe is a popular holiday destination for so many reasons! It is a region brimming with gorgeous scenery and vibrant cultures, with the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of tours and activities.

From the fjords of Norway to the ice fields of Greenland, and from the world-class museums of Scandinavia to the Celtic heritage of Scotland, there is simply so much to uncover in Northern Europe. Best of all, you can visit the region year-round, with each season offering its own appeal.

Northern Europe is so diverse yet it is very easy to travel around, so you can see more than one country in the same trip. Flight times between destinations are short, although you can also journey by road, rail or cruise for scenic views along the way.

What’s more, the Nordic countries – that’s Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – regularly rank in the top 10 safest places in the world to visit. This is partly because they generally have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety, among other reasons.

Another plus is that most people in the Nordics speak English, which means you can easily interact with the locals if you are an English speaker yourself. In Scotland and Ireland, English is the main language.

2. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE GREAT TO VISIT ON A CRUISE?

You can easily travel around Northern Europe by cruise as there are fast, reliable and efficient links within the region. For example, Scandinavian cruise tours are very popular as they offer you the chance to visit a number of destinations across the Baltic and North Seas.

Cruising in Norway is a great option as you can visit various fjords and explore the country’s coastal landscapes. It’s also a fantastic way to discover the Arctic region, travelling aboard the reputable Hurtigruten cruise vessel.

In Greenland, cruising is the best way to reach remote corners of the country as they cannot be accessed by road. For a real adventure, spend a few days aboard a cruise to marvel at the Ilulissat Icefjord, whale watch in Sisimiut, and see mountains towering above the sea at Maniitsoq.

3. WHAT ARE THE TOP SIGHTS IN NORTHERN EUROPE?

Some of the top sights in Northern Europe include glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland, and fjords, mountains and valleys in Norway. Sweden flaunts lushly forested islands and countryside, while Scotland and Ireland are blessed with dramatic national parks and coastlines.

Find out the best places to visit in Northern Europe with our insider guides:

  • The best places to visit in Scandinavia
  • The best things to see and do in Norway
  • The best places to visit in Iceland
  • The best places to visit in Scotland
  • The best places to visit in Ireland

4. WHAT IS THE BEST NORDIC CRUISE?

There are so many Nordic cruises to choose from, so finding the best one depends on what you want to do and how much time you have.

On Scandinavian cruise tours , you can visit Sweden, Denmark and Norway on the same trip. You could spend a week visiting the three Scandinavian countries, or stay for longer to explore the region at leisure and even incorporate other destinations into your tour.

A Baltic cruise is a great option if you want to experience a mix of Northern European cities and cultures.

Take your pick from various Baltic Sea cruise ports to stop off at. You might like to begin in Helsinki, Finland. You can then hop over to Tallinn, Estonia before sailing to Stockholm, Sweden. You may also wish to consider St Petersburg, Russia, as a port of call.

Alternatively, you could focus on exploring Norway by cruise . The west coast is 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) long, so there is plenty to discover! A Hurtigruten cruise will take you to glittering fjords and picturesque shorelines, ranging from 2 to 7 days at sea with shore excursions along the way.

How about an adventure to the far north? If you love immersing yourself in wild, remote landscapes, then opt for a Greenland cruise . Greenland is one of the last unexplored frontiers in the world, with its icy tundras, vast glaciers and Arctic wildlife.

Your voyage could whisk you to the hard-to-reach corners of Greenland. Cruise along glacier lagoons to see icebergs calving into the water, spot whales in the sea, and admire mountainous scenery from the water.

5. WHAT IS A SELF-GUIDED TOUR?

On a self-guided tour, you travel independently without a guide or a group. You’re certainly not alone, though, as your dedicated Nordic Visitor travel consultant has arranged everything before your arrival. They provide you with a personalised itinerary complete with tickets, bookings and recommendations.

We have a 24/7 emergency helpline as well, so should anything unexpected arise, we’re only a phone call away.

6. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO CRUISE NORWAY’S FJORDS?

Each travel season offers different reasons to visit the Norwegian fjords, so there is no “bad time” to go! However we can give you a good idea of what it will be like in Norway at different times of the year, so that you can decide when is best for your trip.

Visit Norway’s fjords in the spring and summer (May to August) for long daylight hours and warmer weather. This is the ideal time to see the fjords surrounded with greenery and to join bird watching or kayaking excursions. You could also experience the midnight sun at the height of summer.

Alternatively, chasing the northern lights in Norway might be on your wish list. Many travellers head to Northern Norway hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive “dancing” aurora borealis.

In which case, we recommend visiting in the autumn and winter, between September and March. You’ll need the right conditions to catch sight of them, such as solar activity, dark skies, and low light pollution. Learn more about the best time and place to see the northern lights in Norway on our blog.

Whether you see the northern lights or not, cruising the Norwegian fjords in winter is ideal if you want to avoid the crowds. The shoulder season (autumn and early spring) is also a good time to go as top attractions are quieter, with fewer visitors compared to the summer.

Whichever time of year you prefer to travel, we have reliable departure dates and there are cruise tours available year-round. You can find out more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

7. DO I NEED A VISA FOR A BALTIC CRUISE?

Whether you need a visa or not will depend on where you are travelling from. For example, you do not need a visa for a Baltic cruise if you are a citizen of the United Kingdom or USA. For all other nationalities, we recommend getting in touch with your local consulate to check.

It’s also worth mentioning that you can visit St Petersburg without a visa for up to 72 hours if you book a package cruise tour. Usually British and American citizens require a visa for Russia, but booking a Baltic cruise is one of the few exceptions.

8. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

In most cases, yes, you can view and select Nordic Visitor arrival dates online. You can always add extra days to your itinerary before or after the cruise.

9. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Yes, you can extend all Nordic Visitor packages with extra days. Every tour can be customised by adding days to the beginning or end of your trip. You can also add extra days within your itinerary if you are travelling on a self-drive or private tour .

For cruises there are fixed departure dates as the vessel must adhere to an itinerary. But of course you can add days before or after your cruise experience. The same applies to small group tours .

10. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

We recommend you look over flights for timings and prices, but hold off purchasing until your package has been secured. Once your dedicated travel consultant has introduced themselves and sent over the confirmation email, you will have all of the information you need to pick and purchase flights.

11. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

You should always bring sensible layers to add or remove when travelling in Northern Europe. The weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • Warm socks (especially for winter travel)
  • Sunscreen (for summer trips)

An umbrella will also come in handy, and cruise passengers may wish to bring binoculars to get a closer look at the fjords and local wildlife.

For a detailed list of what to bring and how to prepare for your trip, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway , Scotland and Ireland .

NORTHERN EUROPE CRUISES

Come aboard one of our MSC Northern Europe cruises and uncover the treasures that can be found in the British Isles, Scandinavian coasts or Baltic seas and experience Europe like you have always imagined it. Start your Polar, Scandinavian or Baltic cruises from the United Kingdom and visit enchanting coastal towns and cities in countries like Norway, Denmark, Sweden or Iceland. From bustling cities like Copenhagen, Tallin or Hamburg , to the beautiful fjords or the picturesque coasts, Northern European cruises have it all. Northern Europe is distinctly different from any other part of the continent. This is because its ancient settlements combine the essence of their culture with the modern features of today. Scandinavian cruises will show you beautiful locations such as Stockholm , Bergen or Oslo . You will be able to visit gorgeous buildings such as the Akershus Fortress or take a stroll around Frogner Park, and we cannot forget the avant-garde building of the Oslo Opera House, located on the harbor.

A Nordic cruise can take you to the bustling city of Copenhagen, with the famous Little Mermaid statue, or to Stockholm, home of the Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are a nature-lover, then this is the cruise for you: MSC Baltic cruises will show you the best of the northern coasts, including the stunning Norwegian fjords, the rugged North Atlantic islands such as Svalbard, or experience a unique and breathtaking Northern Lights cruise. Discover also our Artic cruises and get a rare opportunity to visit Iceland and Greenland. Whether you are planning a trip with friends or family or going on a couple’s getaway, treat yourself to a Baltic cruise in 2024 or a Scandinavian cruise in 2024 and see Europe from a new perspective.

Northern Europe Countries

Have you dreamed of seeing the Norwegian fjords in real life? Are you intrigued by the volcanic wonders of Iceland? Choose a Scandinavian cruise and travel to Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Iceland and discover how these countries mix modern lifestyles with centuries of history and culture. You will be able to not only learn about it but experience it up close during trips and excursions, either to capital cities like Oslo, Stockholm or Reykjavik, but also to smaller towns such as Trondheim in Norway, or Akureyri in Iceland. No matter where you’d like to go in Northern Europe, we can take you there. Or choose an MSC Northern Europe cruise and experience all the North Atlantic has to offer: from France (La Rochelle) and the United Kingdom (Southampton or Edinburgh) all the way to Greenland (Oaqortoq, Nuuk or Ilulissat), passing through the Baltic Sea to Estonia (Tallin) or Finland (Helsinki, Hamina/Kotka), among many others.

How well do you know the United Kingdom? If you need a plan for your 2024 vacation, there are many hidden treasures within Great Britain and Ireland, the only thing you need to do is jump on an MSC cruise around the UK and discover these local attractions. The ports for the British Isles cruises act as gateways to other cities and you can even book a Norway fjords cruise or other Norway cruises in 2024. For starters, you could begin your cruise from Southampton, a port city that has always been a bright spot for cultural exchange. Why not take a stroll down its medieval town walls? During a stop at South Queensferry in Edinburgh, marvel at the beauty of this city. Visit the castle for a look at the Scottish crown jewels or amble down the Royal Mile for a bit of shopping or a cup of tea. If you are lucky, you might get to experience –or hear—the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Art Festival or the International Book Festival. If you wish for a bit of luck on the Emerald Isle, you can stop off at the ports in Cork or Ringaskiddy in the Republic of Ireland. Discover so much more with a cruise around the British Isles in the summer!

Norway Cruises

Did you know that the Vikings main mode of transportation was a ship? They used them to go from one fjord to another. You can do the same with an MSC Norwegian fjords cruise that will show you some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Discover two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Geirangerfjord (Hellesylt) and the Nærøyfjord (Flaam), a stunning landscape that you will only be able to see in Norway, so hop on an MSC fjord cruise and enjoy these natural wonders, whether you are taking a trip with friends, a family vacation or going on a couple’s getaway. You will be able to visit fjords such as Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord and soak up the natural beauty of these formations. Another prime example of incredible natural formations you can enjoy in Norway is the enormous Briksdal Glacier, near Olden’s port. There you can visit the picturesque houses or go for a hike around the Jostedalsbreen National Park. You can visit even more locations during an MSC Norway cruise such as: Maloy, Stavanger or Alesund in the South; and Tromso, Alta in the far North. Find the perfect Norwegian cruise for your next vacation with MSC cruises!

Baltic Cruises

Are you intrigued by the wonders of the Baltic Sea? Discover them with an MSC Baltic cruise this 2024 and spend your summer exploring Sweden, Finland, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and much more. Tallin is the capital city of Estonia. There you can stroll down its cobbled streets, explore its medieval walls, Gothic churches, squares and more. You can also book an MSC cruise excursion to visit the Toompea Castle and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, two of the city’s most impressive buildings. Other capital cities included in an MSC Baltic cruise are Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen or Helsinki, an up-and-coming destination where you can explore Suomenlinna, an 18th century fortress that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If UNESCO World Heritage Sites do intrigue you, or you simply appreciate history and culture, choose a Baltic cruise and enjoy the beauty of Visby, on the island of Gotland. You will be charmed by Visby’s botanical gardens and its beautiful medieval town center. Don’t forget to visit the 12th century St. Mary’s Cathedral. There is much more to see and more hidden gems to discover in Northern Europe! What are you waiting for?

Northern Europe ports

MSC offers a wide range of docking points for your Northern European cruise. Some are embarkation points and others are ports of call, so you can pick the one that will best suit you to start from, and then which ones you will want to visit during your vacation. Start your trip in the south of the UK, with cruises from Southampton and enjoy your MSC Baltic, Fjords or European Atlantic cruises. We also stop at ports in Ireland, such as Cork, or in the Netherlands, for example in Rotterdam, from where we also organize shorter cruises. If you’d prefer to begin your adventure elsewhere, there are ports located across Northern Europe, so you could get your trip started in France, choosing a cruise from Le Havre port, which is near cities such as Paris, Cherbourg or in the Netherlands, opting for a cruise from near Amsterdam. You could also hop aboard your cruise in German ports such as Hamburg or Kiel (near Lübeck) or Warnemünde. There are many other different options spread across the Atlantic such as Rotterdam or Copenhagen. Choose MSC Cruises, and book and unforgettable experience exploring the north of Europe.

CRUISES FROM SOUTHAMPTON Are you ready for a new adventure from the UK? Southampton’s bustling port is the perfect place from where you can discover the beauty of the North Atlantic. Hop onto an MSC cruise ship and explore Northern Europe gems in France, the Netherlands, Norway or Denmark. Find the right itinerary for your trip and explore cities like Bruges, Helsinki or Stockholm, among others. Come aboard a Northern European cruise at Southampton and enjoy yourself. Once aboard, you’ll be able to visit many European cities. When stopping in Copenhagen, you may book an excursion from those available. You can do the same at ports in Germany, the Netherlands or France.

COPENHAGEN CRUISE Begin your MSC Northern Europe cruise in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. This lively city is known for its colorful houses, art and cuisine. Did you know Copenhagen has Michelin-star restaurants? You can discover them during your visit while the cruise ship is docked there. Take a stroll and enjoy the sights of the Øresund strait, or book MSC excursions to see the impressive Christiansborg Palace. Enjoy a scenic river cruise from MSC or enjoy the exciting Tivoli Gardens, the perfect place to spend an afternoon with family or friends. Hop aboard an MSC Baltic cruise at Copenhagen and discover other port cities in Estonia, Sweden and Finland.

REYKJAVIK CRUISE Reykjavik is known as the city of spas. With an Iceland cruise, you can marvel at its craters, volcanos, and caves. The piers along the shore host a variety of shops, live music clubs and bars and cafés. Take a stroll up to Lækjartorg to admire the Sófar, also known as the Sun Voyager, a huge modern steel sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason. It represents an old Viking vessel, with the bow of the ship pointing north. As you will see during your MSC cruise of Northern Europe, Iceland is full of geothermal energy, hot springs, spas and gorgeous skies. Summer is the best season to enjoy a spectacular sunset and admire Reykjavik in the waters of its bay.

Where do you go on a Scandinavian cruise?

MSC Northern Europe cruises branch off into different areas. You can start further north on the Scandinavian Peninsula and choose a cruise to visit Iceland, Greenland or Norway, where you will be able to see the majestic fjords. And then there is the Baltic Sea, located between mainland Europe and Scandinavian and Jutland Peninsulas. On the west, the countries you can visit there are Sweden and Denmark, and on the east, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Explore the Scandinavian Peninsula, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea with MSC and discover its hidden gems on your next vacation. What are you waiting for?

Can you cruise to Iceland?

Our Northern Europe cruises have stops at Icelandic ports such as Reykjavik and Akureyri, where you can dock and experience the beauty of this unique country. When you set sail for your Iceland stopover and first dock in Reykjavik, don’t miss an excursion to Þingvellir National Park where you can see Iceland’s largest lake or head southeast on the island and to find Strokkur, the only regularly erupting geyser. In Akureyri, you can choose excursions such as Godafoss, a waterfall approximately 40 feet tall, the pseudo-craters of Skutustaðir, and Dimmurborgir, an incredible labyrinth of lava. From waterfalls to craters and geysers, it has something for everyone. Explore beyond Scandinavia with an Iceland stopover on an MSC cruise!

How much does a Baltic cruise cost?

There’s a Baltic cruise waiting for you, independently of your budget. MSC cruises offer a wide range and selection of experiences, which will determine the overall price. Factors to consider are different cabin types and accommodation preferences, the excursions you book, as well as the numerous on-board services and experiences we offer. The earlier you book your cruise, the better the price you will find. Although, you can also take advantage of our special promotions available at different times throughout the year. You can also come across a bargain through our flash sales and last-minute deals. What are you waiting for?

Can you see the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise?

The Arctic viewing season for the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise is from late September to late March or early April. However, the best months to view the Northern Lights are December through March, when skies are darkest due to the darker winter days and the higher probability of clear skies. Keep in mind that while it is possible to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis in places like southern Finland, you will have a much better chance if you choose a cruise that travels farther north into Scandinavia.

What is the best time to go on a Baltic cruise?

The Baltic Sea is characterized by seasonality. That is to say there is a large difference in the weather depending on the month. Winters are long, cold and dark, while summers are short and relatively warm. Although, you can still experience some weather changes and spots of showers on a Baltic cruise in the summer. Because the Baltic Sea is located between the cooler winds of the North Atlantic and the harsher continental European climate, conditions and temperatures can vary greatly throughout the year. This means summers can be warm and relatively dry, with some chances of precipitation. MSC cruises go to the Baltics when the weather is best, although you should take into consideration how variable the conditions can be when packing your suitcases. Discover a unique part of Europe with MSC and find your Baltic cruise for the summer!

What do you wear on a Baltic cruise?

The best time to go on a Baltic cruise is in the late spring or summer, seasons when the temperatures range between 53ºF and 72ºF. With such a temperature range as that, you will be able to wear anything from shorts and a T-shirt to jeans with a hoodie or windbreaker. We recommend you choose a varied wardrobe and add plenty of layers to your outfits for your cruise, just in case. Also, even though the precipitation rates are lower in May, June and July, we would still advise you to pack a rain jacket along with you, because you might encounter light showers during your cruise. Another detail you might want to consider that the Baltic States experience long daylight hours, especially during the months of May, June, July and August. So, remember to pack your sleep mask if you think you’ll need it. Go on an incredible adventure with an MSC Baltic cruise.

Routes North - Nordic travel guide

Scandinavian cruises: 2023 guide

Scandinavia has thousands of miles of dramatic and geologically fascinating coastline. It varies from the steep mountainscapes of the fjords to the long sandy beaches of the Danish islands and the pretty villages of the Stockholm archipelago .

Norway's Geirangerfjord is one of Scandinavia's most beautiful and dramatic cruise destinations.

So taking a cruise makes sense and allows you to view the varied coastline and visit places that may takes hours of driving to get to by road.

But what is it really like to take a cruise in Scandinavia? And which are the best routes to follow? Read on to find out all you need to know about Scandinavian cruises.

What is a Scandinavian cruise?

There are many different types of cruise that visit the Scandinavian coast.

They vary from huge luxury liners with loads of leisure activities that are more like giant floating hotels, to smaller cruise boats, where you can attend lectures from wildlife and natures experts on board.

The most popular countries visited are Norway, Sweden and Denmark, while Nordic cruises add on Finland and Iceland. A few cruises include all five countries.

More usual combinations are Norway and Iceland; Denmark and Sweden; Sweden and Finland; or Sweden, Finland and the Baltic states.

Scandinavian cruises tend to sail round Iceland to view the dramatic scenery.

Cruising has a reputation as being for older people, and it is true that in general more cruises are taken by those over 50.

However,  Scandinavian cruises tend to attract a slightly younger demographic and are popular with young honeymooners, families and those people who may not consider a more traditional type of cruise (to somewhere like the Caribbean, for example).

Some ships, such as the Hurtigruten cruises, double as local ferries and are used by residents to get from one town or village along the coast to another without having to drive miles over mountains and around fjords.

Why choose a Scandinavian cruise?

Since many parts of Scandinavia are steep, mountainous, remote and covered in snow and ice for part of the year, they can be difficult to access by car.

To drive from Stockholm to Helsinki for example, is more than 1000 miles by road, even though the two capitals are less than 250 miles apart by sea. By ship, the journey can be done overnight in a comfortable private cabin.

Cruising is also convenient, allowing you to see multiple locations in one trip without having to spend your whole holiday being at the wheel of a car.

And it needn’t necessarily be that expensive. Eating and drinking in Scandinavia is pricey, whereas on an all-inclusive cruise you have unlimited access to as much food and drink as you want!

Downsides to joining a cruise

Of course, cruising isn’t for everyone and there are some downsides:

  • Lack of flexibility. You have to stick to a set itinerary and often don’t have much time in each port. So you can’t just head off to explore somewhere that you see en route.
  • The crowds in port. If you’re on a large ship it can sometimes take a long time to disembark once the ship docks.
  • Extra costs. Some cruises charge extra for internet access or expect large staff tips. Make sure you check exactly what’s included when you book.
  • You may well put on weight! The all-you-can-eat element of a cruise ship buffet makes it hard to resist eating at all hours.

Best time to go on a Scandinavian cruise

Since Scandinavia is in the north, it enjoys long daylight hours in summer, and 24 hours of daylight for much of June once you’re above the Arctic Circle .

Cruising in Scandinavia in in winter means lots of snow and the northern lights

And, of course, the weather is milder with more sunshine in summer, though there’s often just as much rainfall in the summer months as in winter.

The main reason to choose a winter cruise is to see stunning snowy scenery and the northern lights. The spectacular Aurora Borealis can be seen in northern Scandinavia on a clear night from around October to March.

And indeed some cruise companies, including the Hurtigruten cruise line , are so confident that you’ll see the lights during a winter cruise that if there are no sightings, they’ll give you another trip for free.

For more on the best times to view the lights, check out out guide to seeing the northern lights in Scandinavia .

Top Scandinavian cruise lines

There are plenty of cruise lines that specialise in Scandinavian cruises, plus some international cruise lines that include Scandinavia on their itineraries

Hurtigruten

The original Norwegian fjord supply ships, Hurtigruten cruises run the length of Norway from Bergen up to Kirkenes every day, stopping in at major ports and tiny villages.

Traditionally a lifeline for communities that had no road access, the ships now also have comfortable cabins, some with balconies and hot tubs.

The full route takes seven days, and it’s possible to book just one or two legs of the journey.

Hurtigruten cruises often have expert lecturers on board to talk about the wildlife, culture and geology of the landscape, and they also run full-scale expeditions to far-flung destinations, including the Arctic, the Antarctic and the Galapagos islands.

For more on the Hurtigruten, check out All you need to know about Hurtigruten cruises .

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises have good choice of routes round Scandinavia – we like the look of this mega 29-day cruise from New York via Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard and along the Norwegian fjords to Bergen.

Viking also has a 29-day cruise from London via Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Denmark, Berlin in Germany, Gdansk in Poland and ending up in Stockholm in Sweden.

Tallink Silja

Tallink Silja runs mini-cruises across the Baltic Sea from Stockholm to Helsinki, Tallinn and Riga.

The Stockholm to Helsinki mini cruise includes two nights in a sea-view cabin, two breakfasts and gives you a day in Helsinki to explore.

For more on the Stockholm to Helsinki route, read our guide .

Norwegian-owned but based in the UK, Fred Olsen Line has four ships, all small enough to enter the Norwegian fjords but with the facilities and luxury of a larger ship.

We like its Summertime in Lapland and Scandinavia cruise, which leaves from Newcastle, stops in Aarhus in Denmark, then has a few stops in Sweden including Stockholm and a few stops in Finland, including Lapland and Turku.

Royal Caribbean

One of the largest cruise companies, Royal Caribbean runs a few cruises in Scandinavia including a 9-night Norwegian fjord cruise that starts in Copenhagen and ends in Amsterdam, taking in Oslo and the fjords en route.

Popular Scandinavian cruise routes

If you’re after a classic Norwegian Fjords’ cruise, we recommend the Hurtigruten from Bergen up to Kirkenes close to the Russian border, and back.

The full return journey takes twelve days and stops in at the Geirangerfjord , Ålesund, Trondheim, Bodø, the Lofoten Islands , Tromsø, the North Cape and Kirkenes – amongst others!

Ålesund in Norway is a popular stop on a Scandinavian cruise

For those who want the ultimate Baltic Sea cruise, we like this 28-day cruise on the Princess Line , which starts in Scotland, sails round the Shetland Islands, Iceland, along the Norwegian coast, and takes in Copenhagen in Denmark, Stockholm and Gotland in Sweden, Tallinn, Riga and Lithuania in the Baltics, plus Gdansk in Poland.

Many Baltic cruises used to include St Petersburg in Russia on their itineraries, but these have been amended or cancelled due to the war in Ukraine.

Arctic Circle cruises are also popular, particularly in summer when you can take full advantage of the midnight sun. We think this 12-day cruise from Scotland that sails along the Norwegian Coast to the North Cape, then over to Svalbard, is a good option.

Must-visit destinations on a Scandinavian cruise

Of course, the Norwegian fjords are a highlight of any Scandinavian cruise (see our guide to the 16 best fjords ).

We reckon the beautiful Geirangerfjord and the dramatic Lofoten Islands are not be missed for their stunning natural beauty, along with the interesting cities of Oslo and Bergen .

The Geirangerfjord in Norway is a popular cruise destination.

Icelandic cruises tend to sail round the whole island taking in the breath-taking scenery and stopping in at lively Reykjavik .

In Denmark, Copenhagen and the pretty island of Bornholm are regular cruise stops, while in Sweden Stockholm and its archipelago are must-see destinations on any cruise itinerary.

In Finland, Helsinki and Turku are both interesting places to stop at, to get a good idea of the country and its culture.

Cruises worth checking out in 2023 and 2024

2023 is the 130th anniversary of the first Hurtigruten ship, so you can get discounts of up fifty percent off the classic Norwegian coastal voyage this year .

Svalbard is a great place for an adventure cruise

We also really like this cruise round Iceland , which includes whale-watching, geysers and the fjords on the remote eastern side of the island.

For those who want to see as much as possible in a short amount, we suggest this 14-day cruise from Southampton that takes in four European capitals, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn, as well as Kiel in Germany.

But, if you think cruising isn’t really for you and want something different, we reckon this six-day Arctic Adventure round the remote island of Svalbard is a great choice.

It takes in the world’s northernmost capital Longyearbyen and explores glaciers, Arctic fjords and mountains, while looking out for walruses, whales and polar bears.

What to pack for a Scandinavian cruise

What you pack depends on the type of cruise you’re going on. If you’ve chosen a large ship with lots of leisure activities and nightlife, you’ll want evening clothes, gym gear and some smart formal wear.

If you’re on an adventure cruise, you may need hiking or climbing gear, waterproofs and walking boots.

But whatever type of cruise you’ve chosen, here’s a basic packing list of essentials.

  • Waterproof and windproof jacket. Whatever time of year you’re travelling, there’s a good chance of rain in Scandinavia, and the wind can be strong!
  • Layers. Even in summer, it can get cold in the evenings so brings lots of layers that you can take on and off.
  • Binoculars. Wildlife spotting is a big part of many Scandinavian cruises, so binoculars are useful.
  • Sunscreen and sun hat.
  • Sturdy shoes. Even if you’re not going hiking, walking round around cities can be hard on the feet, so make sure you have comfortable shoes or boots.
  • Swimming costume. Many ships have pools and even the smaller ones may have a hot tub on deck to dip in.
  • Camera or phone. You won’t want to miss all that stunning scenery!

Experiencing Scandinavian culture on a cruise

Experiencing the culture can be an integral part of any trip, and many cruises put on lectures about local culture and traditions, workshops on local arts and handicrafts, cooking demonstrations of local dishes and shows of local music or bands.

The Silja Line runs between Stockholm and Helsinki.

Often experts in their field give talks on subjects such as star-gazing, geology, wildlife and the culture of the countries you’re visiting.

Some ships, such as the Hurtigruten, pride themselves on serving traditional dishes made from locally sourced seasonal products that are picked up from ports on the way in their restaurants.

Optional shore excursions also often include cultural immersion opportunities, such as this trip to a sheiling , or traditional farm, where you’ll learn all about life on a rural smallholding in the Norwegian mountains.

We also like this visit to a traditional turf farm in Iceland to learn about life in rural Iceland and how to churn butter!

Essential tips for Scandinavian cruises

  • Do your research beforehand. Some of the larger cruise ships are too big to enter the fjords, so choose a smaller boat if you want to go into the fjords, and a larger one if you want lots of facilities and activities.
  • Pick a cabin with a window. Yes, we know they cost more than inside cabins, but we think it’s worth it so you don’t miss any of that beautiful scenery from your room.
  • Don’t expect to see everything. Sometimes the choice of shore trips can be overwhelming, so pick the ones which you really want to do.
  • Make the most of the free activities. Some ships put on loads of activities, so why not use the sea days to learn the ukulele or try your hand at salsa dancing or crochet?
  • Buy travel insurance. Cruises can be expensive so make sure you’re properly insured in case anything goes wrong. We like World Nomads: see below for an instant quote.
  • Most important of all – relax and enjoy the scenery. Make the most of the fact that some of the world’s most dramatic sea- and mountainscapes are sailing past your window!

Scandinavia cruises: everything you need to know to start planning.

Cruising is a great way to get around to more destinations in one trips, without having to move your luggage from city to city. Scandinavia is a conglomeration of fascinating destinations and it presents the perfect opportunity for cruising.

If you’re thinking about setting sail on a Scandinavian cruise, there are a few things you need to know to start planning.

cruise in scandinavian countries

Follow our guide below to learn everything you need to know to start planning your Scandinavian cruise today. Scandinavian cruises are so great because they are “sampler cruises”. We came up with this term while on a Northern Europe cruise , which is also a great sampler cruise.

You will see many different countries and cities during the typical 7-12 day itinerary. However, you will only spend a day in each port. That’s not enough time to truly explore a city, but it is a good way to get a taste of what the city and the country are like, so you can know if you’d like to return in the future.

Why Take a Scandinavian Cruise

Watch our Scandinavia Cruise Video for inspiration

The best part about Scandinavia is the stunning beauty it offers: from the Norwegian fjords to the archipelagos in Finland and Sweden, and the colorful architecture in Denmark. If you’re a nature enthusiast or outdoor adventurer, Scandinavia offers some of the best experiences you’ll find anywhere.

Typically, Scandinavia cruises include stops in Norway , Finland, Sweden , Denmark , and Germany . They may also include some of the Baltic regions ( Estonia , Latvia, Lithuania), or even Russia.

Where you go will depend on the itinerary you choose. With so many cruise lines to choose from, you can keep searching until you find the perfect itinerary for you.

The Sailing Season in Scandinavia

Due to weather conditions, the Scandinavia cruise season isn’t very long. The season typically lasts from May to September, with the shoulder months offering the lowest fares. The summer days are gloriously long, with many hours of daylight to enjoy your time in port.

It’s typical for the sun to rise at 4am and not set until 11pm.  Cruises to Scandinavia usually range from 7-14 days, though you’ll find more options on the longer side, because of the distance involved.

Weather in Scandinavia

Because the sailing season is confined to the warmer months, it’s never super cold on a Scandinavian cruise. Here are the typical temperatures in Scandinavia during the cruising months:

  • May: 52 degrees F (11 C)
  • June:  50 degrees F(15 C)
  • July: 64 degrees F (17.5 C)
  • August: 62 degrees F (16.5 C)
  • September: 54 degrees F (12 C)

What to Expect From the Itinerary

stockholm, sweden

If you’re looking for a relaxed, stay on board type of cruise, you will still probably enjoy a Scandinavia cruise because the scenery going by the cruise is so pleasant. However, the time in port won’t be super exciting for you if you remain on board. The ports are not quite as scenic.

Most cruisers who choose this destination should be prepared to spend each day making the most of your time in port.  You’ll be spending time in a different major city each day for up to 14 days. For the most part, you will be able to make your own plans in each port.

If you want to take advantage of outdoor activities in each port, be sure to plan ahead to make sure you can access the equipment you’ll need.

  • Sweden Highlights: Discover the city, kayak Stockholm’s archipelago, hike in the countryside, or cycle through remote woodlands, go on a food tour , see the art in the Stockholm subway .
  • Finland Highlights: Explore one of Finland’s 180,000 lakes on a canal cruise, kayak around the famous archipelago of Helsinki, visit the old merchant town of Porvoo, go on a food tour in Helsinki .
  • Denmark Highlights: Enjoy outdoor cafes and street performers, explore Copenhagen by bicycle, sample the freshest seafood in Skagen.
  • Germany Highlights: Visit the adorable seaside town of Warnemunde or take a longer journey into Berlin. Some cruises also include Munich in the itinerary.
  • Netherlands Highlights: Tour Dutch villages Marken and Volendam to see the windmills, learn about Dutch cheese in a tasting course, drink Dutch beer , see the renowned flower garden of Keukenhof, explore Amsterdam .

How to Choose the Right Cruise

Scandinavia

Consider the Cruise Line & What They Offer

The cruise lines that offer itineraries in Scandinavia are numerous. Our favorite cruise line has always been Celebrity and they offer many different itineraries to Scandinavia. Many of their itineraries also include the Baltics, Russia, and other countries in Northern Europe .

Holland America, Princess, Crystal, Costa, Oceania, Regent, Asamara, P&O, and MSC also offer Scandinavia cruises. You can choose the cruise line that best suits your travel style and budget. Some of them are quite a bit more expensive than others.

All of the lines I just mentioned are high-quality, luxury cruises, so it’s guaranteed you’ll be well taken care of, but each brings to the table a different set of amenities and expectations.

» Planning has never been easier with these helpful cruise planning apps .

  • Dining Options – We personally preferred not to eat in the dining hall and we opt for specialty dining instead (read more about specialty dining on Celebrity Cruises) . If that’s more your style, be sure the cruise you choose has that option. If you prefer open seating dining vs fixed time and table dining, or have special dietary restrictions, make sure the cruise you choose offers it.
  • Beverage Packages – We did some extensive beverage package research on our last Celebrity cruise. See what we found out about whether the premium beverage package was worth it . Every cruise has a different package and pricing, so be sure to check them all out.
  • Shore Excursions – Keep in mind that the amount of time the ship is in port has a huge impact on what excursions you can do. You can go on planned excursions to see the typical things in each port. The cruise line will help you plan and book those excursions, so you never have to worry about the logistics. You can also plan your own excursions and maybe get a little more out of the experience.
  • Stateroom Choices – The cruise ships all vary in size and comfort. Be sure you know what you’re getting into and that you save up enough money to get into the cabin you really want. On Celebrity, the Aqua level is more expensive, but offers quite a bit more comfort.

Scandinavia countryside

5. The Perfect Itinerary – Itinerary is so important. Not only the amount of time you spend in port, but also how many sailing days there are, and what destinations you’ll spend the most time at. Make sure your cruise matches your style. Most Scandinavia cruises hit up 5-8 different countries or they specifically focus on the Norwegian Fjords.

We put a lot of consideration into how many sea days were included, and if there was an overnight stopover somewhere, like Copenhagen or St. Petersburg.

Our itinerary left from Stockholm , Sweden, and ended in Amsterdam , Netherlands. Some cruises start and end in the same city, which means you’ll be backtracking. While it might be more convenient for scheduling flights, it will definitely cost you a day or two in transit, which means more sea days.

What Ports Are Included in a Scandinavia Cruise?

You might expect these cruise itineraries to include only Scandinavian countries, but the ports extend quite a bit beyond just that region. This adds to the diverse itinerary options. The 8 most popular cruise ports for Scandinavia are:

  • Stockholm, Sweden
  • Helsinki, Finland
  • St. Petersburg, Russia
  • Tallinn, Estonia
  • Amsterdam, The Netherlands
  • Oslo, Norway
  • Warnemünde, Germany (Berlin)

Other ports are located in Lithuania, Latvia, and several different ports in Sweden, Norway and Germany , etc.

Sample Itineraries

Here are a few popular itineraries from top cruise lines. You can see that they all have some ports in common, but if you really wanted to go to Lithuania, your options are limited.

Regent: 12-night Stockholm to London

Celebrity: 8-night norwegian fjords cruise , celebrity: 14-day scandinavia & st. petersburg, princess: 7-day scandinavia cruise.

What to Pack for Your Cruise

When it comes to packing for a Scandinavia cruise, the biggest concern is weather. If your cruise is on the shoulder season (April, May, September), you’ll want to be prepared for colder weather by packing layers that you can easily take off and put on.

Scandinavia Cruise Itineraries

Scandinavia cruises depart from a variety of ports both in the UK and from within the region itself. The UK’s embarkation ports are Southampton, Dover and Portsmouth, with voyages from these places will entailing a full day crossing the North Sea. Departure ports in Scandinavia include Copenhagen, Sweden, Bergen and occasionally Oslo.

The average length of a Scandinavia cruise is between 7 and 14 nights. Longer voyages will also include stops at ports in Baltic cities such as St Petersburg and Tallinn. Scandinavia cruise itineraries will typically call at a combination of cities, towns and harbours, with the most frequently featured being Visby in Sweden, Skagen in Denmark and Kristiansand in Norway.

The most popular Scandinavia cruise itineraries are those that sail the Norwegian Fjords. Departures are available from the UK in Dover or Southampton, or Bergen in Norway. The majority of cruise lines will offer these on a 7 or 8-night basis, but longer journeys that venture further up the Norwegian coastline are also available.

The best time for Scandinavia cruises

The best time for Scandinavia cruises is during the summer. During June, July and early September, the Scandinavia welcomes warmer weather and longer daylight hours, which allow for a more comfortable time when exploring ashore.

Cruises that explore the region outside of this period tend to be more expedition-orientated, with operators offering extensive sailings deep into the Arctic Circle. While the weather is colder and the hours of daylight fewer, exploring Scandinavia in the autumn and winter gives you the best chance of seeing nature’s most spectacular light show, Aurora Borealis .

Cruise lines that offer Scandinavia Cruises

The majority of cruise lines offer Scandinavia cruises, with some choosing to dedicate itineraries to the region and others including Scandinavian ports on sailings in the Baltic and Northern Europe . Operators like Oceania Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Cunard all offer immersive cruise experiences in Scandinavia, while all-inclusive lines such as Silversea and Regent Seven Seas are perfect should you wish to enjoy the very highest standards of accommodation, dining and facilities onboard.

To explore Norway in-depth, choose to cruise with Hurtigruten . Founded in 1893, the Norwegian operator has spent years travelling the country’s coastline and offers an array of unique itineraries stopping both at marquee ports and hidden ports other cruise lines seldom visit.

THE BALTIC SEA & SCANDINAVIAN Cruises

Medieval architecture, modern sensibilities and icy beauty await in Scandinavia and the Baltics.

The Points Guy

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Viking cruise ship

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Fast-growing Viking has one of the most diverse arrays of itineraries of any cruise line.

Not only does the California-based company offer ocean cruises in almost every corner of the world, it also offers river cruises on many of the world’s major rivers.

That’s notably different from most cruise lines. Typically, cruise lines operate either ocean cruises or river cruises but not both. That gives them a smaller range of itineraries.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Viking has a particularly large footprint when it comes to European river itineraries, with a wide range of sailings on nearly every European river of any note, from the Douro in Portugal to (until recently) the Volga in Russia.

The company also operates river trips on the Nile in Egypt and the Mekong in Southeast Asia, and it just began river trips on the Mississippi River .

There are 80 river ships in Viking’s fleet — an astounding number. None of its main competitors among river lines catering to North Americans, which include Avalon Waterways, Uniworld and AmaWaterways , have anywhere near that number of vessels.

Related: First look at Viking’s stylish new Nile River ship

Among ocean cruise destinations, Viking has a major presence in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, which it considers its home turf. (The company was founded by a Norwegian family.) However, you’ll find Viking’s nine traditional ocean ships everywhere from North America to Asia and Australia.

Last year, the line began cruising to Antarctica with its first expedition ship — a type of vessel built specifically for travel to remote, hard-to-reach places. Viking now has two such vessels.

Among the line’s voyages, there’s everything from eight-day cruises in the Mediterranean to 138-day around-the-world voyages.

Overwhelmed with choices? Here are the five best Viking cruise destinations where the line can truly offer you a memorable vacation.

Scandinavia and Northern Europe

Some of Viking’s most interesting itineraries are around Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea, with many beginning or ending in Norway — the homeland of the company’s founder and chairman, Torstein Hagen.

As Hagen once told me, Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea are what the company considers “Viking country” — a region where it wants to dominate.

During summers, in particular, Viking devotes an unusually large number of its ships to itineraries around Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea and other Northern Europe destinations such as Iceland. Many, notably, use the relatively small but famously scenic Norwegian city of Bergen (population 286,000) as a gateway, something no other line is doing. That allows for unusual variations on the typical Baltic Sea or Norwegian fjords cruise.

The line’s most popular route in the region, “Viking Homelands,” is a two-week-long, one-way trip between Bergen and Stockholm that combines several days of exploring the fjord region of Norway’s west coast with more-typical Baltic cruise destinations such as St. Petersburg, Russia, and Helsinki.

Related: The ultimate guide to Viking ships and itineraries

Note that, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Viking has pulled the St. Petersburg stop, as well as stops in Finland and Estonia from the Viking Homelands itinerary; the trips instead feature extra stops in Norway and Denmark. It’s unlikely St. Petersburg will return to the itinerary until the war in Ukraine is resolved.

Viking also offers a 14-night itinerary that includes several stops in the northernmost part of the country above the Arctic Circle. Dubbed “Into the Midnight Sun,” the one-way route between Bergen and London is unique because it combines calls in far-north Honningsvag and Tromso, Norway, with visits to Scotland’s remote Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands. Though part of the United Kingdom, these archipelagos have ties to Norwegian and Viking history.

Itineraries that will take you from Bergen to Iceland or even as far away as France, Portugal and Spain also are available.

Viking’s Scandinavia and Northern Europe trips range widely in length from just seven nights to a whopping 28 nights.

Among the longest sailings that Viking offers that include calls in Northern Europe are one-way, 28-night voyages between Bergen and New York City. The trips include stops in Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Canada.

In Northern Europe, Viking ships mostly sail out of Bergen, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen and London as well as Reykjavik.

The Mediterranean

Viking has grown into a major player in Mediterranean sailings, with more than 30 distinct itineraries that include stops in the region.

The trips include voyages focused specifically on the Western Mediterranean or Eastern Mediterranean and some that include stops across both areas.

Typical of the latter is the line’s 14-night “Mediterranean Antiquities” routing, a one-way trip between Athens and Barcelona that stops in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Monaco, France and Spain.

More-focused Mediterranean itineraries include the line’s nine-night “Empires of the Mediterranean” voyages between Venice and Athens, which mostly concentrate on stops along the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea in Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro.

In the Mediterranean, the line’s main hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice, Italy; Piraeus (the port for Athens), Greece; and Istanbul.

Europe riverways

Viking is, quite simply, the giant of river cruising in Europe — at least among lines that cater to English speakers. The company operates around 70 river ships on a broad swath of the continent’s rivers — far more than any other river line catering to North Americans.

In all, the line accounts for about half of all river cruises taken by North Americans in the region. The next biggest player in Europe river cruises for North Americans, AmaWaterways, is less than half the size.

Among the rivers in Europe where Viking has a major presence are the Rhine, Main and Danube in Central Europe; the Seine, Rhone, Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde in France; the Douro in Portugal; and the Moselle and Elbe in Germany. Until recently, Viking also offered cruises on the Dnieper River in Ukraine. The voyages have been suspended since Russia invaded the country in early 2022.

On nearly all of the rivers, the line offers multiple itineraries with lengths ranging from seven nights to as many as 22 nights.

Among 10 different itineraries on the Rhine River alone, offerings range from a seven-night “Rhine Getaway” from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, to a 22-night “European Sojourn” from Amsterdam to Bucharest, Romania. The latter adds travel on the Main and Danube rivers to days on the Rhine.

Viking offers some of the most intimate and elegant cruises on the Nile, with three ships including the recently unveiled, 82-passenger Viking Osiris — one of our favorite vessels on the river.

All three of Viking’s Nile ships operate the same seven-night Nile cruise itinerary that Viking pairs with a four-night stay at a hotel in Cairo (three nights before the cruise and one night after) to create an 11-night “Pharaohs and Pyramids” tour of Egypt.

Related: The ultimate guide to Viking’s loyalty program

The cruise portion of the tour includes visits to the historic temples of Luxor, Karnak, Esna, Dendera and Abu Simbel as well as a visit to the iconic Valley of the Kings. The stay in Cairo brings a visit to the pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum and other sites.

Viking Osiris is the first of four sister ships that Viking plans to launch on the Nile by 2025 as it doubles its footprint in Egypt. The vessels offer a clean-lined, Scandinavian-influenced design that mimics the look of Viking’s Europe-based vessels.

Notably, the ship features an entire deck of sprawling suites that rival anything else found on the Nile for luxury and comfort. Each comes with two full-size rooms — a large living room with a residential feel and an adjacent bedroom with a walk-in closet and bathroom. Each suite also has an outdoor balcony with seating for two — something you don’t always see on Nile ships.

Viking is a newcomer to cruises to Antarctica, but the destination is a big growth area for the line. Viking recently added two new, 378-passenger expedition cruise vessels specifically built to travel to the White Continent.

Dubbed Viking Octantis, the first of these vessels began sailings to Antarctica in February 2022. The second ship in the series, Viking Polaris, has just joined its sister in Antarctica this year. Together, the two ships are already making waves in the market for Antarctica cruises, in part because they have several new and unusual features.

Most notable is The Hangar, an enclosed marina that allows passengers to transfer to two of each ship’s exploratory vessels while still in the protected interior of the ship. A first for an expedition ship, it’s something that is significantly improving the experience for passengers heading out on Antarctica exploration.

Related: The 3 types of Viking ships, explained

In another first for polar expedition cruise vessels, every cabin on both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris has floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide partially open from the top to create a balcony-like feel.

Viking offers several Antarctic itineraries, with the typical trip starting with a night at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, before a flight to Ushuaia, Argentina, to board one of the two expedition ships for an 11-night cruise to Antarctica and back. A longer version of the trip features 13 nights on board one of the ships and extra days in Antarctica.

Viking also offers Antarctica sailings that combine a visit to the White Continent with stops in the Falkland Islands, Uruguay and Brazil.

Viking Octantis, notably, also operated Viking’s first sailings around the Great Lakes this year. In 2023, both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will spend their summers in the Great Lakes.

On a luxury cruise to Scandinavia with Celebrity Cruises, you’ll discover why this incredible region is home to some of the happiest people on Earth—and experience some of that joy yourself.

Scandinavia Cruise Highlights

Art and design.

Minimalist Scandinavian design has swept the world, influencing cafes, shops, and our homes for decades. While you’re traveling through beautiful cities like Oslo and Copenhagen, you’ll quickly see the contrast between early Medieval opulence and the modernist, sleek style that dominates today. Stop in Oslo’s National Museum or the Designmuseum in Copenhagen, which both explore the origins of design and architecture in the region.

European History

Discover Viking stories and preserved ships at the Vasa Maritime Museum in Stockholm and the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. Time travel to the Medieval period as you stroll the cobblestone streets of Copenhagen, and admire the statue of the Little Mermaid, based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. Castle-hop across Denmark’s capital, stopping at Amalienborg, Rosenborg Castle, or Christiansborg Palace.

Featured Ports

Stockholm, sweden.

Enjoy the colorful, cobblestone streets of Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, or Old Town, where you can discover centuries of Swedish history or shop in chic, modern boutiques. For an active adventure, go kayaking along the city’s canals and paddle through the city at your own pace.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The myths and lore of Copenhagen and its laidback ambiance have attracted international tourists for years. Visit the Little Mermaid statue commemorating Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale. Stroll alongside the Nyhavn Harbour, admiring the wooden ships floating in the calm waters. Relax and play at Tivoli Gardens, a perfect activity for all ages. Come see why Denmark is consistently rated one of the happiest places in the world.

Oslo, Norway

Viking history runs deep in Oslo. At the Viking Ship Museum, you can see preserved Viking ships on display. Art lovers, spend an afternoon surrounded by eccentric and classic sculptures at Vigeland Park. Museum hop from Oslo’s Natural Museum to the Edvard Munch Museum, which is home to the world-famous painting “The Scream.” During your day in port, visit the Ice Bar, made completely of ice.

Scandinavia Cruise Itineraries

Spend 7 to 13 nights at sea discovering the wonders of Scandinavia and beyond on a luxury cruise. Explore Norway’s fjords cruise to the region’s capital cities. Set sail from Rotterdam or Amsterdam, Netherlands, or Southampton, England aboard Celebrity Apex or Silhouette.

The aurora borealis made a welcome appearance during Kevin Rushby’s trip on board Havila Capella.

‘It is magical to swim surrounded by the Arctic winter in all its brutal glory’: an eco cruise in Norway’s far north

Our writer travelled on a low-emission ship to the top of Europe in winter to experience the northern lights, cross-country skiing and a freezing plunge in the sea

T he view from the ship’s bridge is what I expected: a ribbon of dark Arctic water leading through a maze of snowy mountain islands. But the view of the bridge is a shock. Where is the wheel, the chart and that big metal thing that goes “ting”? You know, the one marked “Dead Slow” and “Full Steam”, like you see in Titanic when they spot the iceberg? In its public areas, the Havila Capella looks like any modern cruise ship or upmarket ferry. There are lounges, a panoramic bar, a couple of gyms and a deck that can be strolled. It is what lies behind the bulkheads that is very different.

On a bridge that is more USS Enterprise than Titanic, Captain Brynjard Ulvøy checks the flatscreen displays. “You see, if we increase speed … ” He nods at the first officer in the comfortable chair who taps another screen. “We drain the batteries and use more liquid natural gas.” Another nod and the ship eases back a little. “At this speed, we are at our most economical.”

The chief engineer, Bjørn Jones, puts it like this: “Remember the first hybrid cars? We are at that stage with ships.”

Soaring peaks … a photo taken from the deck north of Tromsø by Kevin Rushby.

Liquified natural gas has been criticised for its methane emissions , but on this ship other pollutants are reduced and the batteries allow four hours of low-emission sailing in environmentally sensitive areas. When Havila Capella was built, its twin 43-tonne batteries, each housed in a tennis court-size compartment, were the largest in the world.

I hurry away, back to the world of the passenger. We are on a cruise from the Norwegian port of Bergen to the most northerly fishing village in the world, a place far beyond the limit of most human settlements inside the Arctic Circle. On board we have an astronomer, ready to answer questions about the stars and aurora, should they appear. This being a winter cruise also means the weather can play a part: storms have already blown out our departure from Bergen and we had to meet the ship in Trondheim, then make a rapid departure as another squall came bashing up the fjord. Best-laid plans get rewritten, and I’m enjoying the unexpected: instead of a hike up a mountain near Ålesund, I find myself visiting the aviation museum in Bodø .

LNG explainer

Ocean-going ships have not been environment-friendly since the Victorian heyday of tea clippers like the Cutty Sark and Thermopylae, but the search is on. First came coal-fired then diesel, now liquid natural gas, which is largely methane cooled to -162C. “LNG ships can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 23%,” says Dr Kayvan Pazouki, lecturer in marine, offshore and subsea technology at the University of Newcastle. “Not only that but they cut nitrogen emissions by up to 80% and eliminate sulphur and particulate matter.” However, there are drawbacks. “Savings in CO2 are limited,” he notes. “They cannot meet the net zero by 2050 requirement.”

Vessels such as Havila Capella augment LNG with huge batteries (equal to 600 Tesla cars). In China, the Yangtze River Three Gorges 1 is an entirely electric cruise ship, carrying up to 1,300 passengers on day trips along the river. Batteries, however, limit range and the future might see the return of wind power. The bulk carrier Pyxis Ocean is already using steel and fibreglass sails developed by British company  BAR Technologies , generating fuel savings of up to 30%. Pioneering Bahamas-based  Veer Group  is planning to launch two wind-powered ships by 2026. “They will be the first zero-emission container ships capable of crossing oceans,” says  CEO Danielle Southcott. Veer is also working on expedition cruise vessels that use the same technology.

The museum is not something I would normally choose, but I’m soon lost in the Norwegian cold war experience and also have time for a coastal walk, spotting three sea eagles before hurrying back to the departing ship. At dinner, our astronomer, Ian Ridpath, tells me he is optimistic about northern lights possibilities. “The forecast is showing some clear skies and we’re heading right under the aurora band. Kp index is not high, but there’s a coronal hole.”

I already understand what he’s talking about because I had attended his lecture in the conference room. The aurora band is a broad ring of aurora activity that circles the pole. “You can go too far north and miss the aurora,” Ian says. Tonight, and for the next couple of days, we will be directly under that prime aurora-activity sky. The Kp index – K for Kennziffer or code, p for planet – is a measure of solar activity that goes from zero to nine, nine being maximum activity. Even a low index of two can mean a decent sighting when you are under the band. A coronal hole is a cool region on the face of the sun that allows more solar wind to escape, bombarding our atmosphere in the particles that cause those magical displays.

Dinner is not one of those giant buffet blowouts found on many cruises; this is a ship that takes environmental concerns seriously, and table service significantly reduces food waste. The cuisine, however, is delicious, and delivered by the friendliest crew I’ve ever come across.

That evening, the ship is due to pass through the narrowest channel of our voyage, the Raftsundet, a 16-mile channel between two of the Lofoten islands that is barely 200 metres wide at its narrowest. Captain Ulvøy knows it well, having grown up on an island farm close to its jaws. As we pass, he points out his childhood home with a spotlight.

Kevin swimming in the Barents Sea.

As we pick our way through the Lofoten archipelago, on-deck temperatures drop and the sky clears. The ship’s lights are dimmed. A plume of grey mist seems to rise in the darkness from one of many snow-clad peaks ahead, a plume that slowly coils itself, then unfurls across the sky, gaining a greenish tint with a delicate pink fringe and a reddish hem. For the next few hours the aurora display swells, fades, then reappears. The deck lights are turned back on as we approach another port: although in many respects this is a tourist trip, the ship still carries cargo to dozens of tiny ports up the Norwegian coast, bringing mail and essential supplies.

At our next big stop, Tromsø, most passengers disembark for a few hours. I go cross-country skiing around the hilly outskirts of the city, dodging folk on skies or fat bikes, many pulled by their dogs.

Despite its wintry looks, and high latitude, Tromsø benefits from the warming effects of the Gulf Stream, but after that we move around the top Arctic edge of Europe, heading east into colder air. At dawn one morning I can barely last a minute outside holding a metal camera with bare hands. The settlements have a tougher look about them and there are no snow-laden trees. Frozen vapours drift across a hard, dark sea streaked with white, and the island bays are silent with ice. We are now close to the Russian border, and in some small ports the road signs are in Norwegian and Russian, a mark of how close the ties once were: Russians popping across to do their luxury shopping; Norwegians heading east for cheap petrol.

At Honningsvåg on the island of Magerøya we tie up and everyone disembarks. Most board coaches for a tour to North Cape, the most northerly point in Europe. Several others choose a snowshoe walk. That leaves a tiny, rather nervous-looking, group, coincidentally all British. We have chosen to swim in the Barents Sea.

A short bus ride delivers us to Skarsvåg, the most northerly fishing village in the world and the scene for our remarkable act of folly. Gøran and Sunniva run a small shop and a sauna, which they have fired up ready. There’s a fire on the jetty, too, but it doesn’t seem to be giving off any heat.

The couple are the youngest members of a dwindling population, now down to about 40. “The old ladies come and sit in the shop and knit socks,” says Gøran. “Without them I couldn’t go ice fishing.” I assume he means the socks, but maybe the indomitable nonagenarians go fishing, too. In summer this is a popular sport fishing location – visitors landing giant halibut of up to 400kg – but in winter, houses disappear under heavy snowfalls and everywhere is snow and ice. It is magical, especially viewed from the sauna after an invigorating dip.

Kevin Rushby tries to warm up after his swim.

After a few minutes in the 80C sauna, I brave the jetty and descend the steps into the sea. The air temperature is -15C. “Not too cold in the water today,” shouts Gøran. “Maybe three or four degrees.” I surprise myself by actually swimming a few metres, then my toes and fingers start begging for mercy. Once I’ve warmed up, however, an inexplicable desire to repeat the experience grabs me. It really is magical to swim surrounded by the Arctic winter in all its brutal glory.

Later, in the cafe, I eat waffles with cloudberry jam, washed down with hot coffee. I buy some locally knitted socks and discover that Gøran was right. At last, my feet warm up.

The trip was provided by Discover the World , wh ich offers an eight-night trip from Bergen to Kirkenes , with six nights on board ship from £1,624pp with sea view cabin . Discounts are often available and non-seaview cabins are cheaper. Sauna and ice-bathing excursion from £170. Astronomy lecture series (on some voyages) £254 . Mauritius Stops Norwegian Cruise Line Ship From Docking, Cites Health Risk

PORT LOUIS (Reuters) -Mauritius stopped a ship belonging to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings from docking at its ports due to what it said was a health risk and took samples from about 15 passengers who were in isolation on board, its port authority said on Sunday.

The Norwegian Dawn had been scheduled to dock in Port Louis on Sunday, but since it had not gone to Reunion Island, it arrived in Port Louis a day earlier, the Mauritius Ports Authority said in a statement.

"The decision not to allow the cruise ship access to the quay was taken in order to avoid any health risks," the authority said.

"The health and safety of passengers as well as that of the country as a whole are of the utmost to the authorities," it added, without giving any details about the nature of the health risk.

A spokesperson for the U.S.-headquartered Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement that during the ship's trip to South Africa on Feb. 13, some passengers had experienced mild symptoms of a stomach-related illness.

Once in Port Louis, the ship's management worked with Mauritian authorities to make sure precautions were in place and all on board were okay, the spokesperson said.

The port authority said its test results would be known in 48 hours.

Officials at Mauritius' health ministry were not immediately reachable for comment.

The ship has 2,184 passengers and 1,026 crew members. Of these, about 2,000 passengers would have disembarked in Port Louis after completing their cruise while another 2,279 new passengers had been expected to board the ship, the port authority said.

"Passengers who were due to board the 'Norwegian Dawn' and begin their cruise from Mauritius today will not be able to do so due to potential health risks," it said.

Those who were disembarking or joining the cruise will now do so on Feb. 27, the Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said.

Tourism is one of the major drivers of Mauritius' economy.
