The Definitive Danube River Cruise Guide

A Danube River cruise showcases some of the finest scenery in Europe, passing grand castles, stunning cathedrals, ancient sites and elegant cities which have inspired travelers for centuries.

Unveiling Europe’s rich and dramatic history, a Danube River immerses you in the glittering cultural capitals, lush vineyards, magnificent monasteries and endless scenic splendor that line the river’s banks.

Danube River Basics

Ideal for first-time river cruisers as well as seasoned travelers seeking to experience yet another dimension of some of Europe's most-loved destinations, a Danube River cruise is a  journey that any culturally curious world traveler will love , featuring old-world capitals, charming towns and villages and world-class food and culture.

Castles and cities along the Danube River

Flowing  through Germany, Austria, Hungary and seven other European countries , the Danube is the soul of Central Europe and its  second longest river after the Volga. The Danube originates in the Black Forest of Germany and flows southeast for 1,770 miles before emptying into the Black Sea. It passes through and borders many magnificent cities, including four capitals: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade.

Insider Tip: After dark, gorgeous waterfronts illuminate the surrounding cities, and sailing into the famed city of Budapest, with its impressive palaces bathed in golden light is a memory you won’t soon forget.

Some categorize the Danube into two sections with Budapest being the dividing point. To the west are places like Germany and Austria with their extravagant medieval towns, villages and beautiful cities like Vienna. The Eastern Danube weaves its way through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, bringing the chance to experience the region’s rich history and cultural offerings.

Danube River Cruise Lines

Nearly every river cruise line sails the Danube as it’s one of the most popular itineraries for cruising in Europe, ideal for first-time river cruisers as well. Even those who’ve embarked on several river cruises over the years are bound to discover something new when sailing the Danube.

Our CruiseInsider experts can help you find the perfect cruise line and ideal time of year to travel the Danube , but some of the most popular lines for Danube river cruising include:

  • Viking Cruises
  • AmaWaterways
  • Crystal Cruises
  • Uniworld River Cruises
  • Tauck Cruises

Insider Tip: While sailing along the Danube, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife ranging from primitive fish species to white pelicans and European pond turtles.

A week or multi-week grand adventure.

We recommend at least a week to experience the mighty Danube and all it's culture, scenery and history. Along the Danube, there are plenty of longer river cruise options like Viking’s 22-night European Soujoun Cruisetour. If you're looking for elegance and style onboard, then Crystal, Uniworld and AmaWaterways also offer many luxurious Danube river cruise options.

Or, if you’re interested in both a land and cruise option, there’s the 23-night Grand European Cruise on Tauck. An experience of a lifetime, this grand adventure begins in Amsterdam with ports of call in all capital cities the Danube passes and a number of others, including spectacular Cologne with its over 2,000-year history, iconic cathedral and Roman remains.

Danube castle

The Danube is widely considered one of the best itineraries for first-time river cruisers.

Danube river cruising also brings the opportunity to visit charming Bavarian villages like Rothenburg along Germany’s Romantic Road, a place that inspired Walt Disney to create Pinocchio. Travel writer and television personality, Rick Steves, once called this village a “fairytale dream town.”

Insider Tip: After your cruise ends in Bucharest, don't miss an excursion to Romania’s famous Bran Castle, the place where myths like werewolves and vampires first took hold.

Those limited by budget, time or who just want a short taste to determine whether river cruising is for them may want to try a shorter cruise like Crystal’s 6-night Danube Getaway River Cruise. This itinerary starts in the German city of Passau on the Austrian border with stops in Bratislava and Budapest before culminating in beautiful Vienna, the epitome of European elegance and grace.

Highlights Along the Danube

Whether you choose an all-inclusive luxury river line or yearn for a more authentic and immersive family adventure, there is a Danube River cruise for everyone and something to see at every stop along the way including:

  • Enchanting Passau, set where three rivers meet
  • Lush vineyards of the Wachau Valley
  • The baroque splendor of Melk Abbey
  • Vienna’s elegant architecture
  • The splendid Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig
  • Scenic beauty of the picturesque Danube Bend
  • Budapest’s stunning Chain Bridge and Parliament Building
  • Soaring cliffs of the scenic Iron Gate
  • Romania’s rural culture and rich folklore
  • Belgrade’s impressive Kalemegdan Fortress
  • Viewing the acclaimed art collection of the Kunstkammer Vienna
  • In Winter, visiting the famed Christmas Markets

When to Cruise the Danube

May through September is the prime cruising time on the Danube. However, fall can be ideal as well, especially early fall from around mid-September through October.

While the Danube covers a lot of territory and the weather can be inconsistent, temperatures are usually quite pleasant – water levels are good, the crowds of summer have diminished, and fares are usually cheaper.

And if you’re lucky, you might be able to enjoy some of the sights framed with vibrant fall foliage, too. Although late November and December will be chilly, a cruise on the Danube is especially magical with all the holiday lights and neighboring Christmas markets.

Christmas Market along Danube

The springtime can be quite damp due to heavy rain and snowmelt in the mountains. If water levels get too high, cruising vessels won’t be able to pass under some bridges or locks, which means you’ll have to be transported to destinations by bus.

During the summer months, there is more hustle and bustle around central Europe with excellent, warm weather. The days will be wonderfully long as well, which means you’ll have plenty of daylight for seeing the incredible sites and cities along this majestic European waterway.

Insider Tip: If you sail the Danube during the summertime, be sure to book one of the river cruise ships that have a pool - our Insiders know each ship's features well - and you’ll have the perfect way to cool off if it gets too hot.

The Danube River is one of the most famous rivers in the world and the second longest in Europe, and cruising on the Danube River is most enjoyable.

Our quick-reference guide to Danube River cruises in Europe will provide an introduction and overview of cruise options, where they go, and reasons to sail this popular European river.

What is the history and importance of the Danube River?

The Danube River, also known as the “Blue Danube,” has served as an important natural resource for thousands of years. It begins in Germany's Black Forest area (partially flowing from the Brigach stream, fed by resources in the Black Forest). The river goes on for 1,770 miles through 10 countries. Its mouth flows out to the Black Sea between Romania and Ukraine, right by Moldova.

The ten countries it flows through are Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. It gets its name from the Celtic word “danu,” which means “to flow.”

Highlights while sailing on the river include the Wachau Valley, which is a UNESCO Cultural Landscape (pictured below), and the Iron Gate in the Balkans, between Serbia and Romania.

Is a Danube River cruise worth it?

100%, yes!!! We love river cruising. Though it may not be for everyone, it's a real winner for us. There are several great things about river cruises in general, and we do a great job of spreading the word about what to expect on a river cruise if it's your first time .

But in terms of the Danube River, in particular, it's a beautiful river that offers fantastic ports and charming scenery as you sail. It's also one of the most popular European river cruise itineraries. You may stop at some classic big cities, depending on your itinerary, like Budapest and Vienna. You'll certainly stop in incredibly charming smaller cities you may not otherwise have visited along the way, no matter your Danube River itinerary.

Why choose a Danube River cruise?

If you love Europe's charm and are drawn to castles and small European cities, this is the cruise for you. It also has some seriously impressive scenery along the way. Not all rivers provide great scenery between cities, but the Danube River does in this regard in several key areas.

Truth be told, not every mile of the Danube River cruise is photo-worthy. For instance, some stretches are simply through the water with grass on the bank and a few trees here and there.

Absent are castles, churches, or fortresses towering above the town. It goes through several locks that are cool and worth taking photos of but are not magazine-worthy if you know what we mean. But you'll experience locks and some scenery better than others on most European river cruises.

The Danube is special for the countries it goes through, the moments and areas that do have phenomenal scenery along the way, the destinations along the river, and its history.

Can other rivers claim a waltz named after it, like “The Blue Danube,” by famed Austrian composer Johann Strauss II in the 19th century? You also can't beat the Christmas Markets in the cities along the Danube River during Christmas time.

Where does a Danube River cruise start and end?

Your cruise's embarkation and debarkation points depend on the precise Danube River cruise you book.

However, some of the most popular cruise lines and itineraries start in Budapest, Hungary, and end in Nuremberg, Germany. Or they do the opposite cruise, from Nuremberg to Budapest.

Yet the Danube River is a sizeable length, as we mentioned at over 1,700 feet! And there are many more itineraries to consider that have different starting and ending points.

These include:

  • Bucarest (Romania) to Budapest (Hungary)
  • Amsterdam to Budapest
  • Munich to Budapest
  • Budapest to Regensberg (Germany)
  • Passau (Germany) to Budapest
  • Budapest to Vilshofen (Germany)
  • Vienna to Nuremberg
  • Vienna to Prague (transfer from Nuremberg because Prague isn't on the river)

A journey between points like Amsterdam and Budapest will typically be a longer cruise than eight days (even 12-15 days). It also starts in The Netherlands, where the Danube River doesn't exist yet, so you partially sail on other waterways.

Where does a Danube River cruise go?

To charming towns and wonderful cities in Europe! For more specific port information, we've listed the ports where cruise lines stop. There's a lot of overlap for more popular cities, like Vienna, Nuremberg, Melk, and Budapest, for example. And not a lot of cruise lines go to lesser known cities , like Roth, Emmersdorf, Weissenkirchen, and Kalocsa.

Pending your specific itinerary, we've also included cities that Danube River cruises may reach via bus from the port yet aren't directly off the Danube River.

An example of that is Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria. It's approximately an 80-minute ride from the Danube River on the Yantra River. And while it's not on the Danube itself, it is a town that Viking River Cruises transports its guests to on some itineraries because it's an interesting place to visit and not that far from the Danube.

  • Engelhartszell

Austria (cont'd)

  • Wachau Valley
  • Weissenkirchen
  • Veliko Tarnovo

River cruises on the Danube River that begin in Amsterdam also sail the Rhine River and Main River. We have not listed the cities it stops at before it reaches the Danube River in the bulleted list above.

River cruises that sail into Serbia, Croatia, and Romania may also travel on the Drava River.

Danube River Cruise Highlights

You may visit these must-see places when you're Danube River cruising:

  • Melk's Benedictine Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Budapest's Parliament building
  • St. Stephan's Cathedral in Passau
  • Palace of Parliament in Bucharest

When is the best time to cruise the Danube River?

Now that you have a better idea of what cruising the Danube is like, you're probably wondering when to go. There's no wrong answer because any time a cruise line has an available cruise means they have already considered the time of year.

But the answer could depend on what kind of season you want to experience:

  • Spring : Mother Nature is in her splendor during spring and colors dot the European towns. Choose April or May for a spring cruise when you'll also experience cooler temperatures, with flower bulbs popping up and leaves beginning to show on the trees.
  • Summer : If you want to enjoy the pool on a river cruise ship (not all have a pool, but some do), then choose summer. It's also great for packing a little lighter since you won't need sweaters, long sleeves, or fall or winter coats.
  • Fall : Consider fall if you envision wearing a lightweight coat as you walk around charming European towns (and maybe even a scarf during late fall). Temperatures are slightly lower (between 45 to 65 degrees), but the fall colors are awesome if you're lucky enough to see them.
  • Winter : The dazzling lights at the Christmas Markets will warm your heart along with warm mulled wine! If you want to experience Chirstmas in Europe with one-of-a-kind holiday markets, then going during December is a must. You'll definitely need to wear a winter coat and pack a scarf, gloves and a hat because it will be cold. But it will be magical!

How much does a Danube River cruise cost?

In general, river cruises are inclusive of many things, like wine and beer with lunch and dinner and walking tours in each city. We've written extensively about the cost of river cruises , overall, and what to expect in that regard.

Depending on the cruise line, Danube River cruises can cost anywhere from $1,200 per person based on double occupancy of an onboard cabin, to upwards of $7,000 per person for double occupancy.

Sometimes you'll find them at lower starting prices, depending on the season (like if they're running holiday sales) and depending on the cruise line. The level of “luxury” of the cruise line and the length of the cruise could also be determining factors for the Danube River cruise cost.

What is the best Danube River cruise line?

That's up for debate, of course. It depends on your travel style (including your preferences when you vacation) and your budget.

Here are a few well-known cruise lines that market to United States consumers. They all have Danube river cruise boats that sail the famous river:

  • Emerald Cruises
  • AmaWaterways
  • Adventures by Disney
  • Avalon Waterways

8 days - Imperial Danube (Vienna - Budapest - Vienna, MS Crucestar 4*)

We were very pleased with the ship and the itinerary. The cabins and common areas were clean and well appointed. As independent travelers, we did not participate in any of the excursions offered by Crucemundo, but rather thoroughly enjoyed our own exploration and activities at all the ports. We have taken many cruises and did find the level of service and quality of food was not up to our standards. The staff was entirely from the Ukraine, and while it felt good to know we were helping them (tips etc.), it seemed like the ship/job was a safe haven for them but not where they wanted to be. Few spoke English/Spanish and were not skilled and experienced in their jobs. We understand there is cultural difference. but a smile and little enthusiasm would go a long way. The food was mediocre/okay. Fortunately, we embraced the opportunity to sample the cuisine at every port so we missed most lunches aboard. Overall, we found the cruise to be a great value and would certainly try another Crucemundo voyage with a Spanish crew.

Enchanting Danube (2024) (Passau to Budapest, 2024)

This was our first river cruise and everything went beyond our expectation. Services: the staff were accommodating and helpful. Tours: various excursions to choose from for different age group and they were well-organized. Ship: beautiful boutique-design ship. The only cons is a slow Wifi connection but it ain't a big deal. There were so many onboard activity that kept us entertaining. I noticed that the cruise operates in eco-friendly manner, i.e. they eliminates sing-use plastic. That's a big plus!!!!

Reviews of danube cruises.

We really enjoyed our cruise on the Crucemondo "Crucestar" ship. The cabins were clean and well maintained with daily housekeeping including turn-down service. The staff on board the ship was courteous and always happy to help. The food was excellent. Each day we filled out a form to choose our lunch and dinner entrees - always 3 choices including one vegetarian. There was never a day that I couldn't find something that appealed and the variety was amazing: beef, pork, chicken, lamb, seafood, pasta, etc. Each meal also included a salad and dessert and dinner included soup as well. Almost too much at times. We were assigned a table at the beginning of the tour and sat with the same people throughout the cruise. We had great table-mates - a couple from the US and another from the UK (we are from Canada), so it was a lively international table. In fact, the entire cruise was very international with passengers from Spain, Germany, Turkey, US, UK, and Canada. All information was given in four languages, which was wonderful. We took the optional tours in the four cities (Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and Melk). The tours were conducted in English despite the fact that we (4 of us) were the only English-speaking passengers on the tours. The tour guides were very knowledgeable about their cities. The only thing I didn't like about the tour was the fact that it was a there and back cruise (Passau to Budapest to Passau). It meant a lot of cruising time. If it was a one-way cruise, we would have had a little more time in each city, which would have been nice. But I knew this ahead of time and will make this a consideration for future cruises. Overall, I was very pleased with the Crucemondo cruise line and will look at other river cruises offered by this company in the future. Thank you for a wonderful, relaxing cruise!
This tour was wonderful. Hit all the highlights. Definitely recommend.
The cruise was excellent in most aspects, especially the crew, who were absolutely lovely and extremely hardworking. Our ship, the Arosa Donna, was very smart and clean with adequate space in the lower deck cabin we occupied, but let down by the loud noises when going through the numerous locks. We found the food, which was prepared and cooked with care, a real treat at every mealtime and so too were the drinks - we enjoyed the water, wine, beer and the really good coffee! We enjoyed the time on and off the ship and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the scenery and see a little of Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava, as well as the delightful little town of Engelhartszell. In addition, we enjoyed the Wachau day trip. Thank you very much to Sabrina and all the other staff on board, who always did their very best to ensure everyone was able to make the best of their time on the cruise.

The most beautiful Danube cities and towns to visit

From grand European capitals to enchanting villages with intriguing histories, these are the places to visit along one of the continent's longest rivers

the most beautiful towns to visit on the danube

It flows through Vienna, known as the home of Mozart; Budapest , a historic gem where grand buildings contrast with more ramshackle, bohemian neighbourhoods; Bratislava, where you'll find neo-Gothic architecture and a diverse culinary scene; and Belgrade, with its vibrant nightlife and tumultuous history.

A great way to discover the cities along the Danube is on a river cruise . River cruises are a great way to embark on grand adventures, allowing you to visit several towns and cities on one trip, without the hassle of navigating local transport yourself.

A Danube river cruise is not just about capital cities. As well as bustling metropolises, you'll also be able to explore old towns, historic landmarks and pretty villages set amid glorious rural scenery, like Passau and Linz, the venerable 900-year-old abbey at Melk, and the breathtaking natural landscapes of the UNESCO-designated Wachau Valley.

Good Housekeeping has a boutique river cruise which will take you through several of these locations and cities along the Danube. In Vienna, you'll enjoy an exclusive visit to the Royal Lippizaner Stables with historian Lucy Worsley, to see the city's beautiful Lipizzaner horses in training.

We've rounded up some of our favourite destinations to help you feel inspired and visit the loveliest Danube cities, whether on a river cruise or a city break.

Vienna, Austria

vienna

Vienna is one of Europe's grandest cities, boasting Baroque palaces, beautifully-tended gardens and chic coffee houses where you'll feel as if you've stepped back in time. It's also a city synonymous with music, being the home of Mozart for much of his life, and still draws lovers of classical music who come to hear accomplished musicians play in the city's many magnificent concert halls. You can visit the house Mozart once lived in, which is now a fascinating museum dedicated the composer.

Vienna is also home to the the Royal Lipizzaner Stables at the Spanish Riding School, where grand Lipizzan horses are trained to perform a mesmerising type of equine ballet.

You can visit the Royal Lipizzaner Stables with Lucy Worsley as part of Good Housekeeping's Danube River cruise. You'll enjoy an aperitif and an introductory talk before watching the training of the young stallions in the imperial atmosphere of the Baroque winter riding school, accompanied by classical Viennese music.

Esztergom, Hungary

the most beautiful places to visit in france

Esztergom is a historically important city perched on a picturesque curve in the Danube River which marks the boundary between Hungary and Slovakia. This Danube city has been the seat of Catholicism in Hungary for over 1,000 years, and the first thing you'll see as you approach is the remarkable church that crowns the historic town.

This is Hungary's largest church and has an impressive history stretching back to the reign of the nation's first king, St Stephen. You're sure to be impressed by the scale of the Basilica up close, with its monumental 118-metre dome.

Elegant Esztergom is a port of call on Good Housekeeping' Danube cruise with Lucy Worsley, where you'll have time to visit the exquisite Basilica before sailing onwards for Budapest.

VISIT ESZTERGOM WITH GH

Linz, Austria

the most beautiful towns to visit on the danube

The Austrian port city of Linz enchants visitors with its Baroque facades, fairytale churches, and charming squares. The city has transformed from an industrial hub to a vibrant European cultural stronghold in recent years. Whether it's theatre, cinema, art, or music, you'll find plenty of thriving culture to enjoy. Of course, no visit to Linz is truly complete without indulging in its sweet culinary delights, including the famous Linzer Torte, in one of the city's many excellent cafés and bakeries.

As well as having plenty of culture of its own to offer, Linz also makes a great base from which to explore nearby Salzburg. While not located on the Danube itself, Salzburg often makes an appearance on Danube river cruise itineraries due to its unmissable landmarks, including Mozart's birthplace and the exquisite Mirabell Palace and Gardens.

Krems, Austria

the most beautiful towns and cities to visit along the danube

Krems might not be among the better-known locations on the Danube, but it certainly has a lot to offer in terms of culture and scenery. In this small Austrian town, you'll find story-book churches and museums and plenty of spectacular vistas to enjoy on a meandering walk along the Danube's banks.

It's also a great destination for wine lovers, who can sample vintages from the surrounding Krems Valley wine region. Vineyards have flourished in this valley for centuries, thanks to the region's fertile soils, and are particularly known for their Rieslings and spicy Grüne Veltliners.

You'll make a stop in lovely Krems on Good Housekeeping's Danube cruise, where you can join an optional tour to discover Krems and parts of the surrounding Wachau Valley.

VISIT KREMS WITH GH

Bratislava, Slovakia

bratislava aerial view

Slovakia's capital sits snugly between Hungary and Austria along the banks of the Danube. Bratislava may be compact, but it packs a punch in terms of history and culture. The city's location has made it a melting pot of cultures since ancient times, and you can expect to see these influences play out in every corner.

There's a medieval and Gothic old town that buzzes with the sound of different languages around grand Baroque palaces built by Hungarian nobility alongside communist-era blocks and a unique futuristic bridge that reflect its more recent past. A highlight is the imposing Bratislava Castle, which dominates the skyline with its four turrets, standing on a rocky hill in the Little Carpathians and looking out across the Danube.

You can visit Bratislava on Good Housekeeping's Danube cruise, where you'll have time to visit the castle and wander the cobbled streets of the Old Town and along the promenade of the Danube riverbank, stopping for a coffee and admiring the views.

VISIT BRATISLAVA WITH GH

Durnstein, Austria

pictorial wachau valley,lower austria

If you're compiling a list of smaller towns and villages to visit along the Danube, you'll want to add Durnstein in Austria's Wachau Valley. This village is home to around 900 residents and looks like something straight out of a storybook, with its crumbling hilltop castle and pretty blue-white church overlooking the river.

Durnstein is also a must-visit location for wine lovers. This sleepy little town is well-known for its wineries and is surrounded by lush vineyards producing quality Rieslings and other wines. The surrounding countryside is also known for its sweet and plump apricots, whose trees transform the valley's orchards into a fragrant pink-white ocean of blossoms each spring. The locals take these delicious fruits and turn them into a range of products that make excellent souvenirs. Perhaps you'll come home with some apricot liqueurs, marmalades, or even apricot-based cosmetics.

Passau, Germany

passau at sunset

Another small but mighty location along the Danube is the enchanting town of Passau. The town is located at the meeting point of the Danube with two other rivers, the Ilz and the Inn, and is known for its colourful Baroque buildings and winding alleyways. Having been partially destroyed by a fire in 1662, parts of the town were rebuilt by Italian architects, giving the city a Mediterranean Baroque flair.

Nestled among the charming cobbled streets of Passau is St. Stephen's Cathedral, home to one of the world's largest church organs with more than 17,000 pipes and one of the buildings that was rebuilt in the Italian Baroque style. It's well worth paying a visit to the cathedral to see this spectacular instrument, as well simply strolling the streets and marvelling at the beautiful buildings set on the banks of the rivers.

Budapest, Hungary

the most beautiful towns to visit on the danube

Hungary's enigmatic capital, nicknamed 'the Pearl of the Danube,' is a city of contrasts. For much of history, the city didn't exist. Rather than Budapest, there was Buda and Pest, two distinct settlements on opposite sides of the river. Around 150 years ago, the two sides became one, forming the city we know today. You can still note the differences on either side of the Danube, with historic Buda being slightly more upmarket and elegant than the lively, bohemian Pest across the river.

Visitors love wandering around admiring Budapest's mix of architectural styles, from Art Nouveau to Baroque and Bauhaus. Highlights include the Gothic Hungarian Parliament building standing proudly on the eastern bank of the Danube and the famous Szechenyi Baths - one of the largest thermal spas in Europe.

Good Housekeeping's Danube river cruise, with Lucy Worsley, will take you to Budapest, where you'll dock for two nights, giving you plenty of time to get to know this central European gem.

VISIT BUDAPEST WITH GH

Belgrade, Serbia

belgrade, the capital of serbia view of the old historic city center on sava river banks image

Another Danube city is Belgrade. While it might not be considered the prettiest city along the Danube, Belgrade has a long and fascinating history and is thought to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, stretching back over 7,000 years.

You'll see reminders of this long history as you explore, especially at the impressive Belgrade Fortress, standing at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, first built by the Romans in the 2nd century and later destroyed, rebuilt and expanded many times.

But Belgrade has a modern flair too and is gaining a reputation for buzzy nightlife, with a whole host of excellent bars and restaurants to discover as well as a lively street art scene, with various intriguing murals adorning the walls of its buildings throughout the city.

Melk, Austria

the most beautiful towns and cities to visit along the danube bratislavajpg

Known as 'the gateway to the Wachau,' Melk is another exquisite Austrian city with an important religious history. Its crowning glory is its Baroque Abbey, perched high above the Danube and offering incredible views across the region's beautiful valleys and Melk's cobbled streets.

Melk Abbey is packed full of fascinating artefacts and includes a stunning library with an intricately frescoed ceiling, a spiral staircase and thousands upon thousands of books. The Abbey is also the final resting place of several members of the House of Babenberg, Austria's first ruling dynasty.

You can visit Melk on Good Housekeeping's cruise of the Danube. You'll get the chance to visit the city's famous abbey and wander around the city's delightful streets, enjoying views across the Danube as you go.

VISIT MELK WITH GH

Visit Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and Melk on a Danube cruise with Good Housekeeping. This exclusive seven-night cruise includes a special visit to the Royal Lipizzaner Stables with Lucy Worsley who'll give a special talk and Q&A.

7 Fantastic UNESCO Sites To Experience On A Danube River Cruise

T he Danube is one of the most popular rivers in Europe for its natural beauty and the many castle ruins, monasteries, and palaces you can see while cruising along the river.

In fact, there are so many fantastic sites to see along the Danube, you would need months or even years to see them all. If you’re on a river cruise, as I was, you’ll have a week or maybe 10 days; therefore, I’ve chosen what I believe are some of the most visually splendid UNESCO sites as I experienced them on Viking’s Danube Waltz.

Notably, the Danube flows through two capital cities rich in UNESCO designations: Budapest and Vienna. It was not easy to narrow down the list for this article, and I know many worthy sites and experiences have been left out. Nevertheless, I hope you’re inspired to do your own exploration of fantastic sites along the Danube River.

What Is A UNESCO Heritage Site?

The United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a designation protecting the cultural heritage of places and monuments around the world. There are even intangible UNESCO designations such as Vienna’s coffee house culture.

A key aspect of UNESCO is that it helps to foster appreciation for a people’s culture and heritage, and it supports awareness and conservation.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is one of Europe’s most romantic cities. The mix of architectural styles, broad city streets, and the many bridges crossing the Danube River create an old-world atmosphere that feels as if you’ve traveled back in time. And, in November 2020, Conde Nast Traveler included the banks of the Danube in Budapest in its list as one of the most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

There are three main districts designated UNESCO Cultural Heritage Sites in Budapest: Buda Castle Hill, the banks of the Danube River, and Andrassy Avenue. The Danube River divides the city with Buda Castle Hill on the west side and Andrassy Avenue on the east side. The most beautiful views are anywhere along the river and from Buda Castle Hill.

1. Buda Castle Hill

Buda, on the west bank, is the older part of the city, perched about 500 meters above the river. It is less populated and there is a wonderful mix of medieval, Baroque, and 19th-century architecture. The Buda Castle was built in 1265, but later buildings were added during the Baroque period. In the past, the castle complex was the home of Hungarian kings. Today, it houses the Hungarian National Gallery.

Part of the Buda Castle complex is the 700-year-old Matthias Church, named for King Matthias, who ruled between 1458 and 1490. He was the most popular Hungarian king, and under his rule, the country experienced peace and prosperity. He is sometimes referred to as Matthias the Just and is said to have been a bit of a Robin Hood. Be sure to visit the interior of the church with its gold leaf treasure and ornate stained-glass windows. Matthias Church was the coronation church for many Austrian Emperors.

The Fisherman’s Bastion is a viewing area built to celebrate the 1,000th birthday of the Hungarian State. It is usually crowded with people so don’t be in a rush. It is by far the best place from which to view the river and the monuments on its eastern banks.

Pro Tip: Buda Castle Hill provides the best views of the Danube River and the Parliament Building. You may encounter some steps and a few mildly steep hills, but overall it’s not too strenuous. To get there, walk across the Chain Bridge then take the funicular up the hill. Or, you may hire a taxi to take you up. It’s worth it for the views. Allow at least a half-day for visiting the Castle District.

2. The Szechenyi Bridge

The Szechenyi Bridge is also known as the chain bridge. This iconic monument is spectacular any time but for the most magical experience, be sure to view it at night. Built in 1849, it was the first permanent bridge to connect the east and west sides of the city, and it is the oldest bridge in Budapest. The bridge was blown up during World War II by the retreating German army leaving only the towers. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1949.

Pro Tip: The chain bridge and all of the historical monuments along the river are exquisitely lit at night. It’s easy to see why Budapest is often referred to as the Paris of the east. Do make time to walk across the bridge at night and admire the city from a different perspective.

3. Parliament Building

The Parliament Building was built between 1885 and 1902 on the east bank of the Danube in neo-Gothic style. The building symbolizes the importance of Budapest as the capital of Hungary. The exterior is impressive with its many domes, spires, and statues of Hungarian horsemen, but the real treasure is the inside, which is decorated with 88 pounds of gold.

Pro Tip: If you do visit the interior of the Parliament Building, plan to spend at least 2 hours.

Vienna, Austria

Before embarking on the Danube river cruise, what I knew about Vienna was that it was the home of Mozart (though he was born in Salzburg) and the Habsburgs. I had no idea that the historic center of the city is protected by UNESCO or that it was once the capital of the Holy Roman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

What makes the city center fascinating is the layers of time exposed in the architecture and ruins that have been excavated. And of course, the history of the Habsburg Empire is seen everywhere, especially as you walk the Ringstrasse, or Ring Road, created in 1865 under the rule of Emperor Franz Joseph. At the time of its completion, it was considered quite chic to walk the Ringstrasse and possibly catch a glimpse of the Royals.

A few buildings of importance in the history and culture of Vienna include the Vienna State Opera, the Hofburg Palace (home of the Habsburgs), the gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and many 19th-century buildings that were once residences. Altogether, it is an enchanting mixture that begs you to stay, and perhaps enjoy a Strauss Waltz or a classical music concert.

4. The Hofburg Palace

The Hofburg Imperial Palace was the home of Austrian sovereigns including the Habsburgs. The Habsburgs ruled for 600 years — from the 13th century until 1918. Like the city of Vienna itself, the Hofburg consists of many additions added over time. The original structures were built in the 13th century! I highly recommend a good guide well versed in the history of Austria to tour this important monument.

The buildings today house the Austrian government, however, the apartments and living quarters of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth are open for tours.

Plan at least 2 hours to see the apartments, and if you want to visit other exhibitions at the palace, plan a half day.

Pro Tip: If you love all things equestrian you’ll want to at least walk by the stable of the Spanish Riding School where you may get lucky to see the Lipizzaner stallions in their stables. They are treated like royalty. You can purchase tickets for a tour or to watch a training session here.

5. Viennese Coffee Tradition

The Viennese coffee tradition has been designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. You must not leave Vienna without having a coffee at one of the historic cafes . There are as many cafes as there are ways to enjoy your coffee. A few options are Cafe Ritter, one of Vienna’s oldest and most elegant cafes; Cafe Landtmann on the Ringstrasse; and Cafe Demel, once the cafe of the royal Habsburgs family. This is a very old and pretty cafe with seating indoors.

Pro Tip: In Vienna, you may linger as long as you like over your coffee. In fact, that is exactly what the Viennese do. Also, your coffee will be served on a silver tray with a glass of water on the side.

6. Gottweig Abbey

Gottweig Abbey overlooks the stunning Wachau Valley and the Danube. It is a working Benedictine monastery.

The original abbey was built in 1084 and became a Benedictine abbey in 1094. After a fire in the 18th century, the abbey was completely reconstructed in the Baroque style. Today, there are only 30 monks who live here. They maintain the grounds and work in the apricot orchard and vineyards. You can buy some of the apricot wine produced at the Abbey, as well as tour the extensive library and art collection.

Referred to as the Montecassino of Austria, Gottweig Abbey is a place of respite and provides a window into the monastic way of life.

7. The Wachau Valley

The Wachau Valley is most memorable for the breathtaking views of castle ruins, monasteries, and vertical vineyards that appear to be at 90-degree inclines. You will see the ruins of Durnstein Castle where King Richard of England, also known as Richard the Lionheart, was imprisoned. The Wachau also encompasses Melk Abbey and the Abbey at Durnstein, which you’ll see on the shore just below the ruins of the castle. Cruising the Wachau Valley is a highlight of the Danube River cruise.

Pro Tip: If there is one thing I wish I had known before embarking on the Danube River cruise, it’s that there is so much to see, a week is like a movie trailer — just enough to get you really interested in the main feature. It’s a good idea to book some extra days in one of your favorite cities, be it Budapest, Vienna, or another port on the river. Once you’re there, make the most of it!
