Manga Cafes

manga cafe tours

Manga cafes (܂񂪋i, manga kissa, short for manga kissaten) are establishments where visitors can read from an extensive library of manga (Japanese comics). They also provide computers with internet access , making them synonymous with internet cafes. Furthermore, manga kissa have become a popular low budget accommodation option as many of them are open 24 hours and offer amenities such as showers and free drinks for around 1500 to 2500 yen per night. Some manga kissa offer women-only sections.

Manga kissa can be found in most cities across Japan. Many are located in side streets close to train stations. Big cities such as Tokyo and Osaka have a large number of such establishments. However, without Japanese reading skills it can be difficult to identify a manga kissa as many do not have English signs and they are not usually located at street level, but on a higher floor in a multi-storey building.

manga cafe tours

The cost of staying at a manga kissa depends on the time spent there. Typically, the initial 30 minutes cost around 200 to 400 yen, and additional time is charged at a rate of about 100 yen per 10-15 minutes. Longer plans are commonly available: typically 3 hours for 700-1200 yen, or 5-8 hours for 1500-2500 yen. Note that prices can be a little higher on weekends.

There are usually two types of seats available at manga kissa: open seats and private booths. Open seats are office chairs at a computer desk, while private booths are narrow partitioned cubicles with just enough space for a desk and either an office chair, reclining chair, flatbed chair or futon . Some manga kissa also offer wider private booths that can accommodate two people or even larger family rooms; these tend to be comparatively more expensive.

manga cafe tours

Other facilities typically available at a manga kissa, in addition to an extensive manga (comic) collection, include free Wi-Fi , unlimited soft drinks, paid showers (amenities sold separately), television, movies , console games, dedicated online gaming computers, printers, CDs and DVDs, and vending machines . Note that some of these extras require an additional fee. Manga kissa also commonly provide blankets, indoor slippers, web cameras, and phone and handheld game chargers for free. Snacks and food may also be sold at the front desk.

The procedure to use a manga kissa may seem intimidating at first, but it is essentially the same at most manga kissa across Japan. Some places even provide English check-in instructions at the counter or may have English speaking staff. It typically goes as follows:

  • Enter the building and take the elevator to the check-in floor.
  • A membership may be required to visit a manga kissa. If you don't have one yet, you can sign up for one on the spot for typically a few hundred yen. Photo ID, such as a passport, is usually required when filling out the membership form.
  • You will be asked to choose the type of seat or booth that you want, and the time plan that you intend to stay on. There is usually a price list at the counter that you can use to help make your decision. The plan that you choose determines the length of time that you are committed to pay for. Staying longer will incur additional charges.
  • The staff will issue you a membership card and hand you a payment slip that contains your name, seat or booth number and starting time.
  • Proceed to your seat or booth. When using a booth, you can close the curtain or door for privacy. The manga kissa is generally a quiet place and it is considered rude to make noise and disturb others. Requests for extra items should be made at the check-in counter.
  • When you decide to leave the manga kissa, take the payment slip to the the check-in counter and pay. The staff will tally the charge based on your seat or booth type, time plan and additional fees (if any).

Tips and recommendations by our official guides

Thanks for your interest in this tour! I read lots of anime magazines describing Akihabara as a "paradise for the otaku" and was dreaming about going there one day. When I started living in Japan, I was finally able to go to Akihabara, expecting a world of subcultures outside of the station. However, the reality is that all those famous spots are a bit far from the station, and it was very hard for me to find stores that sell anime goods or to choose a good maid cafe. So I created this tour for anime & game lovers who would like to explore Akihabara without getting lost or spending too much time finding the way by themselves.

What travelers treasure the most during the trip is time. To make full use of every minute, getting a guide is a great way to avoid all the time wasted on getting lost on the streets.
Especially in Akihabara where there are tons of travelers going to Akihabara and purchasing electric products around the station, you cannot expect all the fun subcultural spots to be set around the station. If you are a game or anime lover, you may get disappointed by finding it so hard to reach all the fun spots. Joining our tour will save you a lot of time and energy for a better traveling experience!

This tour is not only suitable for game or anime lovers, but also for those who are just curious to learn about the Akihabara culture! In these three hours you can explore the geek world in Akihabara including retro game stores, anime goods stores, game arcades, and maid cafes.
Solo travelers, friends, couples and family, are all welcome!

Although not all of our guides are fans of anime or games, they all have the passion to help foreign travelers feel the real Japan and give you traveling tips to counter tourist traps!
We are looking forward to seeing you soon!

What's included

Jump into the world of old school video games in akihabara.

The first stop of the Akihabara tour is a retro video game store that is considered a treasure trove for game lovers, especially for those who grew up experiencing the rise of the Japanese video game industry. Here you can listen to the 8-bit video game keyboard music which you can hardly find anywhere else! Your guide will help you find and buy all the old fashion video game machines and disks. While the world is chasing after new games, it is also a good idea to look back to these old-time games that bring back the charm of our childhood memories.

Get spell casted by cute Japanese maids in a special maid cafe.

Speaking of Akihabara culture, a maid cafe is what you cannot miss out on while you're in Tokyo . In this tour, we go to a popular maid cafe among locals where you can hang out with cute maids, get spells cast on your food, and take photos! If you order an omelet or a hot latte, they will draw cute illustrations on it with ketchup / chocolate sauce!

Enjoy a wide array of interactive Akihabara style entertainment such as anime cosplay, from a local's perspective.

You can enjoy wandering around huge anime stores with hundreds of figurines and cosplay goods . There are lots of places that travelers feel awkward going to by themselves. However, with a guide, you can fully enjoy every single stop like a local!

In front of Ticket Office right outside of Electric Town Gate of JR Akihabara station

  • Your guide will be holding a red/orange sign saying "MagicalTrip"

Manga Cafe: A Cheap Stay Where You Can Read Manga

It is undeniable that manga is one of the most popular Japanese cultural phenomena inside and outside the country. Throughout history and especially after the Second World War, these Japanese comics have developed a huge industry that moves billions of yen a year. As might be expected, its popularity has given rise to other business models that turn Japan into a manga-lovers paradise. Themed cafes, events, exhibitions, manga cafes, exclusive shops, or amusement parks are some of the places where fans can enjoy their favorite characters and stories.

A nice detail of a manga and a coffee

If you aren’t a manga lover, you might also be interested in a visit if you’re a low-budget traveler. Recently, manga cafes have become a popular option for cheap accommodation. Besides having a wide catalog of manga, they are also opened 24/7 and provide various services and entertainment.

What is a Manga Cafe?

They have a wide collection of manga, they are an economical option to rest for a few hours, services and amenities of a manga cafe, how much does it cost to stay in a manga cafe, how to stay in a manga cafe, famous manga cafe chains in tokyo, is it worth staying in a manga cafe.

In Japan, manga cafe is popularly known as manga kissa (漫画 喫茶). ‘ Kissa ’ is a shortening for kissaten (喫茶店), a traditional tea house where they serve coffee and sweets.

It is said that the origin of the first manga cafe was in Nagoya city. Due to the competition between some coffee shops, one of the owners decided to place several comics in his business so that his customers could enjoy them for free. This cafe-manga style rapidly increased in popularity, with more and more people coming every day to read the free manga. However, this created another problem — customers spent a lot of time in the cafeteria without ordering anything from the cafe menu. Hence, these businesses started to charge a small fee calculated on the time customers spent there.

manga cafe tours

The current kissa cafe has continued this concept. Manga cafes are establishments where visitors have access to a wide catalog of many kinds of manga. But they are also spaces to relax with a multitude of services and amenities, such as unlimited internet access or non-alcoholic drinks included in its rate. All this for a reasonable price and 24 hours of access.

Why are Manga Cafes Popular in Japan?

Manga kissa are much more than places where you can have a good read. Since its creation, they have evolved to become a unique element of the Japanese popular culture and lifestyle.

According to a study carried out in 2019, 33% of Japanese people read manga frequently . So as you may have guessed, the main reason to go to one of these cafes is to enjoy reading manga.

The manga kissa ‘s gigantic shelves occupying all the walls have an extensive catalog with hundreds of titles . Some of the manga, perfectly arranged and aligned, narrate impossible loves with a happy ending. Others tell us epic battles, and some will make us laugh and others, sometimes, cry.

In a manga café you will be able to choose many manga

Whatever story you want to read will have it at your fingertips in a manga cafe. This makes it the preferred spot for reading manga in Japan. In addition to saving money and space at home (the latter being limited in most Japanese residences), you can also find mangas that have been out of print for a long time and are no longer sold in bookstores.

The Mobal SIM Card is the only SIM card with a Japanese phone number — perfect if you need to stay in touch on short visits or for long-term visitors living, working, or studying in Japan. Mobal pocket wifi is also great if you’re traveling with family or a group!

Imagine that you are having an epic night with friends, drinking, eating, and sharing laughs and adventures. Suddenly, you look at your watch and realize it is almost midnight. You run to the nearest train station, barely dodging all those who are in the same situation as you. You jump the steps three at a time, and when you finally reach the station platform, the doors of the last train of the day close in front of your eyes.

Although Japan has one of the best public transport services in the world , it is not available 24 hours of the day. Most trains and subways in large cities stop working between 12-1 am, depending on each line. Additionally, getting home by taxi or staying in a hotel can be an expensive option.

Book and Bed have some capsule beds

Luckily, there are cheaper alternatives, and manga cafes are among the most popular in Japan. Most establishments have private cubicles whose rates depend on the time you spend there . Many of them offer free non-alcoholic drinks and ice cream, as well as TV, computers, and unlimited Wi-Fi. They also tend to have showers where they can cool off before bed or wash up in the morning. Spending the night in a manga cafe costs between 1,500 and 3,000 yen, depending on the place and the hours you are there. Sounds good, right?

Cheap Stayings in Japan for Tourists: Why Choose a Manga Cafe?

It is not a secret that Japan is an expensive country, and finding cheap and well-located accommodation can be a challenge. In cities like Tokyo and Osaka, you may have to travel long distances to visit the various tourist areas, and it is quite likely that you will have to take several trains to return to your hotel at the end of the day. For this reason, more and more tourists choose to stay in manga cafes to save money and time, especially after long days exploring and enjoying any city.

Manga kissa are an excellent accommodation option, especially for those travelers who want to enjoy themselves freely without being tied to strict schedules. There are usually one or more manga cafes in each area in big cities, so you can find accommodation wherever and whenever you want.

Most manga kissa offers two types of options: public area or private rooms . The public area is designed for people who want to read for a while or use a computer with internet access. There is usually a zone with tables and computers in this area, and another with armchairs to sit down to enjoy reading some manga.

public area of a manga cafe

Private rooms are small cubicles and often offer different options. Some rooms have a desk and reclining seat, while others can have a tatami floor or mat for guests to lie down to rest. Also, some manga cafes offer double or family-size rooms. All these options include a computer with a DVD player and an unlimited Wi-Fi internet connection .

A private room of a manga cafe

Whether you book a public space or the private rooms, you will have access to different types of services and amenities:

  • An extensive catalog of manga, magazines, and films: Besides having thousands of manga books, manga kissa also offers magazines and other types of publications available to read for free. However, most of them are in Japanese, so if you don’t have a fluent level, you might not understand much. However, you can take some manga and try to understand the content by looking at the illustrations. There is usually a small section with movies that you can watch on your computer, and some of them include different language or subtitle options.
  • Unlimited drinks: In the public area, you will find a small space with soda, juice, tea, and coffee machines free for guests to use freely. Additionally, they also offer a food menu and alcoholic beverages for an extra cost.
  • Showers: Many manga kissa have showers. In some establishments, they can be used for free, although in others, you need to pay a small additional fee (between 100 and 300 yen).
  • Other additional services : Some manga cafe chains offer rooms with karaoke, darts, and even areas to play pool. These options usually have an additional cost that is not included in the basic rate.

Free machines of coffee in a manga kissa

The price of a manga cafe depends on the establishment and the type of room you choose. A private single room usually costs between 100 and 300 yen for the first thirty minutes. But the most common option is to choose a multi-hour plan: the 3-hour plan costs about 700–1,500 yen and the 8-hour plan around 1,500 and 3,000 yen. Many manga kissa have a small additional cost during the weekends.

In some manga cafes, it is not possible to make a reservation for several days. If you plan to stay longer, you will have to leave the room in the morning and rebook another one the following night. You can ask if there is an option to store your luggage at reception or look for a payment locker near the establishment. Therefore, staying in a manga cafe is really useful when you want to spend the nights in different areas or places.

Getting a room in a manga cafe is quite easy, even if it’s challenging to find staff who can speak in English. When you arrive at the reception, they may ask you if you have a membership card for that establishment. If it’s your first time, you can get it by paying between 100 and 300 yen. You will also have to show them your passport to become a member and fill out a document with some information. You will only need to do this the first time you sign up for any manga cafe chain. That is why it is a good idea that you always try to stay in establishments of the same company.

Entrance of a manga cafe

Once you have your membership card, they will ask you to choose the type of room and how many hours you want it. To do this, they will show you a list of all the types of rooms and their prices. When you decide where you will spend the night, staff will explain the establishment’s different services and their general rules. In some places, they will ask you to pay in advance, and in others, you can pay when you leave. Finally, they will give you the key, and you can start enjoying your room and all the services offered by the manga cafe.

How to Find a Manga Cafe?

If you have decided to try the experience of staying in a manga cafe, but you don’t know how to find one, the easiest thing is to do it google it. You can write or copy and paste the following sentences in Google or Google Maps, and you will get the closest manga kissa in your results. My advice is to check the establishments’ pictures to see the facilities and check that they have private cubicles.

  • Internet cafe (ネットカフェ)
  • Manga cafe (漫画喫茶)

Manga cafe in Tokyo

There are hundreds of different manga cafe establishments and chains scattered throughout Japan, and it would be impossible to make a detailed list of each location. However, here is a selection of some of the most famous manga cafe chains in Tokyo:

  • Customa Cafe : There are different establishments in Tokyo and in the nearby prefectures of Chiba and Saitama. Some have exclusive areas for women. The rate, services, and facilities depend on each establishment.

Inside a customa cafe, a manga kissa

Hailey’5 Cafe : Hailey’5 Cafe has several locations in the most central areas of Tokyo and one in Kyoto. This manga kissa is renovated with wide spaces. The rate, services, and facilities depend on each establishment.

Mangas in a manga cafe in Tokyo

Book and Bed : Book and Bed’s concept is somewhat different from the other manga cafe since it has rooms with beds, and therefore, its nightly rate is more expensive than others. In Book and Bed, it is possible to find some books in English or other languages. The rate, services, and facilities depend on each establishment.

Inside of a book and bed

GeraGera Manga Cafe : This is one of the most popular manga coffee chains in Tokyo since its rates are relatively cheap and usually have additional promotions and discounts. It has several establishments around Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa. The rate, services, and facilities depend on each establishment.

Staying in a manga cafe has its pros and cons. On the one hand, it allows you the freedom to spend the night in the area you want and without having to worry about schedules . They are also cheaper than most hotels, and you simply have to pay for the hours you will spend there.

Detail of a manga

Keep in mind that rooms are small and most of the manga is only available in Japanese. Sleeping in a manga cafe for several days in a row can be hard and tiring since there are no proper beds or normal pillows.

All in all, my recommendation is to sleep in a manga cafe if you can’t catch the last train, if you want to a specific place early in the morning, or if you’re just curious and want to experience a night in a manga cafe.

Staying in a manga kissa is a complete immersion to a different kind of Japanese popular culture. It is where visitors become nomads when the trains stop running, and the neon lights go out. Surrounded by manga , magazines, computers, and coffee machines, you can enjoy a moment of peace before the sun illuminates the streets and the city goes back to its chaotic rhythm. A manga cafe is not only an affordable place to sleep, but a unique element of the country’s culture that will make you feel like a real local during your stay in Japan.

I arrived from Madrid to Tokyo in 2017, with two suitcases full of dreams to fulfill and one backpack full of fears to beat. I always carry my camera with me, my biggest passion, during all my trips and adventures. My ikigai is discovering the real essence of this country; the part of Japan that is hidden in the daily routine, in the supermarkets crowded with japanese grandmas, in the restaurants without english menu, in the countryside’s hidden gems and in the small things that we don’t notice everyday.

You missed the most famous of them all, Kaikatsu Club. They are nationwide. I used them in my trip there in 2016 and 2023. The memories during my 2023 trip brought tears of joy, I didnt think that the place/manga still existed especially with todays technology. I completely stumbled upon the place in some town in 2016 and then remembered when I was in Sapporo in 2023 and struggled to find cheap available hostel around Christmas holidays. On both trips I had skis with me and they fit nicely into the cubicle with enough space to sleep. You can get packages up to 24hrs but must pay within each 24hr period and did 8hr night special for 1800yen incl taxes (2023). I remember it being around 1200yen in 2016, what a bloomin bargain. Free drinks, ice-cream and showers and laundry/food options available at additional reasonable cost. I will definitely be there on my next trip and is truly embedded into my memory now

How to stay at a manga cafe (internet cafe) in japan.

The Complete Guide to Staying Overnight at a Japanese Manga Cafe

Traditionally, when travelers think of cheap accommodation, they think of hostels. Although there are cheap hostels all across Japan, manga cafes, also referred to as internet cafes, are actually the cheapest accommodations in the country. They are even more accessible, too, as they are located in some of the country’s most remote corners.

You might be apprehensive at first to stay overnight in a manga/internet cafe. You might think staying in an internet cafe means laying across chairs in a Starbucks. However, that is not the case in Japan. There is a large network of these cafes across the country with great amenities.

In this article, I will share why you should stay at a manga cafe and explain the process for checking into one. I will tell you how to find these cafes and how you can stay at one without knowing Japanese.

manga cafe tours

Hi. I am Noah Takes The World. I traveled to every prefecture in Japan while teaching English in Japan for one year. If it weren’t for manga cafes, there would have been no way I could have afford to travel so much on a teacher’s salary.

Subscribe to my monthly newsletter— stunning photos and stories to guide your solo trip

This post may have affiliate links. I receive a small percentage if you book a hostel or attraction through my recommended links. This is at no extra cost to you and helps me reach my goal of becoming a full-time digital nomad.

What are Manga Cafes?

A sign of a manga cafe.

Manga cafes are places where you can read manga (Japanese comics) and access the internet. Some people simply refer to manga cafes as internet cafes. The term manga cafe does not fully represent these spaces, as some cafes also offer karaoke, pool, and darts.

If you stay at a manga cafe, you can access an unlimited drink bar and soft-serve ice cream. You can take a shower here as well and buy food. So, manga cafes are an attractive place for travelers to stay once the trains in Japan stop running at midnight.

Why Should I Stay at a Manga Cafe in Japan?

Chairs at a manga cafe.

I primarily stay at manga/internet cafes because of the cost. Manga cafes are not as private as hotel rooms and are not as social as hostels. However, manga cafes are the cheapest place in the country to get some sleep.

Besides the cost, you should stay at a manga cafe because they are convenient and can be found all across the country, even in rural areas. Manga cafes eliminate spending days researching where to stay.

There are locally-owned manga cafes in larger cities, but the Japanese internet cafe industry leader is Kaikatsu Club. They operate hundreds of internet cafes across the country, even in the most remote areas.

Staying at a Kaikatsu Club is a little bit more expensive than staying at locally operated manga cafes, but they have great amenities, like laundry machines and free towels. They are also typically in better shape than local cafes.

How Do You Find Manga Cafes?

manga cafe tours

  • Open Google Maps.
  • Zoom into the area where you want to stay.
  • Search for Kaikatsu Club.
  • If you want to stay at a cheaper local manga cafe, you can simply search “internet cafe.” I generally only stay at local manga cafes if there are no Kaikatsu Clubs in the area, which is rare. I have found that Kaikatsu Clubs are cleaner and have better amenities than local cafes.
  • Stay at the Kaikatsu Club that fits best with your itinerary.
  • For example, if you are coming to Hiroshima from Fukuoka, you will want to stay at the Kaikatsu Club located closest to Hiroshima Station since Hiroshima Station is a stop on the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Kyushu.

How Do You Check Into a Manga Cafe?

The food menu at a manga cafe.

The first time you visit a manga cafe is a little complicated. You will have to follow a similar process as checking into a hotel. You will present an identification and usually need to write down your contact information. Once you are registered in their system, you will receive a card that can be used each time you come into that cafe.

At Kaikatsu Club, once you have this card, you can get into any of the hundreds of locations across Japan. If you are staying at a local internet cafe, you will have to register each time you visit one since they are not connected to a large network.

You might need to write your name in Katakana to register to stay at a manga cafe. Katakana is the Japanese writing system for writing foreign loan words. Just use this Katakana name converter site .

Do I Need to Speak Japanese to Stay at a Manga Cafe in Japan?

Get free soft-serve during your stay at a manga cafe.

You don’t need to speak Japanese to stay at a manga cafe, but you do need access to a good translation app. You can normally expect Japanese staff to speak English at hostels and hotels because they have many foreign customers.

This is not usually the case at manga cafes. Since very few clients are foreign visitors, you should not expect the staff to be fluent in English. Luckily, you can normally get by without much Japanese after you register during your first stay.

At many Kaikatsu Club locations, you check in on a computer monitor, and there is an English language option. If there is not a computer check-in, go to the front desk. On the front desk, they will have a menu with the prices. Just point to the package you want and say, “Kore wa, onegaishimasu,” which just means, “This one, please.”

If you forget this phrase, chances are the staff will try very hard to understand your English. Most likely, someone on the staff will understand. They will pull out their phones and use a translator app if they don’t.

One time, I had trouble checking an internet cafe because of the language barrier. This was in a very rural prefecture. However, once I showed the staff I could communicate using Google translate, they were very friendly and let me stay.

How Much Does It Cost to Stay at a Manga Cafe in Japan?

When you check into a manga cafe, you will be assigned a seat number.

Manga cafes charge based on how many hours you stay. So, you always pay upon leaving the cafe. Normally, you can stay anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours. Typically, cafes in bigger cities and near major train stations will be a few hundred yen more expensive than cafes in more suburban areas.

Manga cafes are also priced based on what package (the type of seating) you choose. The cheapest rates are for seats only. Typically, you get a little cubicle with a chair. These are more meant for travelers who want to read manga and sit for a few hours.

If you want to stay overnight at a manga cafe, you should get a semi-private booth with a flat mat and PC. These booths are ideal for sleeping, but they fill up the fastest. If you cannot get a flat mat, some internet cafes have semi-private rooms with reclining chairs that can also be used for sleeping.

I call these rooms semi-private because there are walls on each side of the cubicle, but they do not reach the ceiling. So, you can hear your neighbors next to you, especially if they are moving around or sleeping.

For 6 hours or less, you should expect around 1,500 yen for a semi-private booth. For 8 hours, the best deals fall under 2,000 yen. For 10 hours or more, anywhere up to 3,000 yen is common. You pay about 200 yen more on weekends for each package price.

Do Manga Cafes Have Completely Private Rooms?

a semi-private room at a manga cafe

If you want more privacy than the semi-private booth, some Kaikatsu Clubs have private rooms that come with a lock key. The private rooms are about the same size as the booth, but the door locks and the walls extend to the ceiling. Private room rates are typically 500 yen more than a semi-private booth.

How Can I Check the Price of a Manga Cafe in Japan?

It is very easy to check the price of a Kaikatsu Club, and it is important to do so if you want to save the most money.

To check the price of a specific Kaikatsu Club location, follow the steps above for “How do you find manga cafes.” Once you have found a Kaikatsu Club, click the link to kaikatsu.jp to see the pricing table. The site will be in Japanese, so you might need to download the Google Translate extension .

manga cafe tours

Also, I like to check the price beforehand because it affects which Kaikatsu Club I visit. For example, in Hiroshima, there are two Kaikatsu Clubs, only 4 minutes away from each other , but they have different prices and packages.

a screenshot of a pricing table for an manga cafe

When Should I Stay in a Manga Cafe Over a Hostel?

Private rooms at manga cafes offer the most privacy.

You should stay in a manga cafe when you want to maximize savings using a JR Pass. JR passes allow unlimited train rides for a set period in a specific region of the country. Rail passes are expensive and only cost-effective if you want to go long distances.

I love staying at manga cafes because they help me save hundreds of dollars with my rail pass. I would spend the day sightseeing or hiking, and then at night, I would take the train to my next destination and find a Kaikatsu Club nearby to take a quick rest.

An example of maximizing your rail pass is taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nikko National Park for the day. Then, around 7 or 8 pm, take the Shinkansen to reach Koriyama. Once in Koriyama, you can stay at a manga cafe for 8 hours before going to the stunning Goshikinuma Ponds the next day.

When Should I Stay at a Hostel Over a Manga Cafe?

Shelves of manga at a manga cafe.

Visiting Japan? Read: How to Spend 48 Hours in Tokyo With Only $100 and The five best hostels for solo travelers

I did not always stay at manga cafes during my travels to every prefecture in Japan. Sometimes, it is more convenient and cost-effective to stay at a hostel. When visiting a large city over multiple days, I recommend staying at a hostel, not a manga cafe.

For instance, you are taking a 3-day trip to Kyoto , one of the most idealistic cities in the country. If you stay at a manga cafe, you cannot leave your luggage there once you check out for the day. You would have to rent a locker at the train station, which would eat away at your savings.

If you are staying in the same city during your trip, it is more convenient to have a place where you can store your luggage.  You will also probably sleep longer if you stay at a hostel too, since hostels do not have any hourly fee like manga cafes do.

Our Otaku Tour is carefully crafted to indulge your Japan anime obsession. This 10-day itinerary aims for the immersion of our guests into Japan's anime culture. Visits to three of Japan's top anime districts: Tokyo’s Akihabara, Osaka’s Nipponbashi Den Den Town, and Nagoya’s Osu Shopping District, with visits to the many real locations featured in popular anime, giving the itinerary the feel of an anime pilgrimage. Choose to enjoy the otaku destinations of Japan during one of three seasons: summer, autumn, and cherry blossom spring. Transportation for the tour is facilitated by our sleek and comfortable private coaches, with two days set aside to experience Tokyo’s efficient public transportation system, along with a trip on the speedy Shinkansen bullet train. Tokyo brings the most in terms of anime appeal: we take you all the unmissable attractions for otakus: Ikebukuro Sunshine City (featuring a must-try Ramen Tour!), Animate Ikebukuro, Harajuku's Takeshita District and Omotesando, Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo, Otome Road, and Nakano Broadway. Shop till you drop in Akihabara - anime's cultural crossroads, with store after store of anime merchandise, retro video games, manga, and more. While there, take tea in a maid cafe - a themed cafe hosted by adorable and entertaining maids, or immerse in otaku culture at a local anime cafe such as the Gundam Cafe. Try Pachinko in Shinkjuku, take a foodie tour of Tokyo's neon-lit entertainment district of Kabukicho and Golden Gai, and see Asakusa Sensoji - the oldest shrine and temple complex in Tokyo. Hakone is a must for Mount Fuji alone; Japan's sacred mountain makes an appearance in numerous anime and movies, and the nearby Hakone region presents a charming countryside appeal, as seen from your Lake Ashi cruise on the deck of a pirate ship. Hakone was also the setting for the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, and we visit a local Evangelion Store for a chance to shop for official merchandise. After, we visit Iga Ueno, a location famous for its ninja, with a former ninja residence (now a museum) complete with hidden rooms and hidden trap doors. Visit Nagoya, which is increasing in popularity with anime fans, especially since the addition of the new Ghibli Park in November, 2022. While there, you can enjoy a day of leisure to explore the city as you want. If you would like to try and experience the delights of Ghibli Park, AJT will help you in the attempt to get tickets, although they cannot be guaranteed at this time. As an alternative, you can join our guide on a combination foodie / anime store walking tour around the city. You will explore Nagoya’s downtown district of Sakae, as well as the Osu Anime District, stopping to browse in a variety of anime, manga, and pop culture boutiques. We take you to Kyoto for a more traditional Japanese experience, with visits to the most memorable of the old capital’s temples and shrines. Fushimi Inari's hundreds of red torii gates (and accompanying Fushimi Sake District), Kiyomizu Temple, Kosanji Temple, the Golden Pavilion's shimmering phoenix, Arashiyama's Bamboo Grove, and the Gion Geisha District are just a few of the captivating locations in old Kyoto, and we also include a Kimono Experience where you can take pictures in stylish traditional attire. Osaka is famous in anime for the eccentricity and homegrown humor of its residents, and this otaku tour gives you plenty of time to explore the most fascinating places in town: Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market, Nipponbashi Den Den Town (also known as the Akihabara of Osaka), and Dotonbori, with a special Street Food Tour of the nostalgic Shinsekai District. Please browse our detailed itinerary for more details.

Bagus Gran Cyber Café グラン・サイバーカフェバグース

  • Published on : 09/02/2015

The Bagus Gran Cyber Cafe mangakissa in a workmanlike. Internet, anime movies, video games, all for a good night.

A manga break

In the bustling Shibuya, Bagus Gran Cyber Café presents the traditional services of a mangakissa for a mere 1 500 yen for eight hours. An unlikely home for one night, as a temporary halt.

The Danshi - Japanese teenagers - rub shoulders with disillusioned workers who missed their last train and seinen fans (young adult manga) or amused tourists, in a subdued atmosphere, with black carpet and soft lighting. Bagus Gran Cyber Café is a mangakissa institution, which attracts curious visitors to discover a purely Japanese concept. It is part of Japanese culture and urban landscape, mixing very diverse people of Tokyo.

Manga culture

What are we doing here? Whatever you want, from consulting e-mails to a nap, as well as a manga break. Emerged in the late 1970s, manga cafés offer their customers hundreds of comics to devour, imaginary universes aligned in rows of bookshelves. Whether they be tankōbon, the traditional form of manga , or Zasshi, huge compilations of several series that readers follow each week, they all have a "manga dimension" and Bagus Gran Cyber Café never makes an exception from the rule.

It also rents animes and DVD s, in addition to offering video game consoles. The discovery of digital and popular Japanese culture is at hand in a multi-level building.

For the night

Tokyo spreads out and often residential areas are more than an hour and a half from the center of the capital. It is not unusual to see Tokyo people miss the last train, and not living in the center of the capital, having to spend the night in a mangakissa, thanks to the great value of these very well kept hotels. Of course, everyone can go there at any time of the day. At Babus Gran Cyber Café everyone can connect to internet, read, use food and drink distributors, sleep on a futon, take a shower, rest on a massage chair or in a projection room.

Forget the image of the young, neglected and unfriendly geeks: Bagus Gran Cyber Café is part of a mangakissa chain, the staff are friendly, it is very clean and silence and privacy rule. An experience in itself.

We’ll spend most of our time in Akihabara, but I’ve often mixed this tour with seichi junrei , pilgrimages to sites famous from critical scenes in famous anime and manga .

What’s the Coolest Budget Tokyo Stay : A Capsule Hotel or Manga Cafe?

Table of Contents: What’s the Coolest Budget Tokyo Stay : A Capsule Hotel or Manga Cafe?

After I stayed at Popeye Media Cafe in Fukuoka , I was charged to keep going.  Like my explorations of Korean love motels and bathhouses , I was ready to take the tour of manga cafes (aka manga kissas ).  Afterall, what I experienced for a $12 overnight stay was pretty darned exciting and if done right, it could be a ghetto palace.

Other Tokyo accommodations I’ve tried

Staying at a hostel in Tokyo

My first night in Tokyo, I stayed at a hostel in the popular Akihabara district . It cost around $22/night  for a dorm bed at an old, run-down building with fickle hot water and the reek of cigarette smoke coming from a downstairs bar. The showers and bathrooms on each floor were hodge-podge work-around creations ( a shower in a sink? …And a sink built over a toilet?). The mattresses were so used, they were practically futons. One night was enough.

Staying at a Japanese home

Next, I stayed with a girlfriend in the Chiba prefecture, halfway between the airport and Tokyo . Staying in a Japanese home with local hosts is a wonderful opportunity to experience an authentic Japanese lifestyle and cuisine. Unfortunately, budget-wise, “free” doesn’t mean cheap. The ride to her prefecture alone, was the cost of my hostel, not to mention, customary gifts, hiked up the cost. It’s definitely a stay I enjoyed and was grateful for.  But it’s certainly, not cheap to stay with friends. …Unless you’re fine with mooching.

Tokyo capsule hotel vs a manga cafe : which is the better choice.

My last night in Tokyo, I wanted to try the capsule hotel in Akihabara . But standing before the night manager in an aging lobby, while inquiring about a night’s stay,  the pros and cons didn’t balance.

We all know the pros of staying at a capsule hotel .  A capsule hotel has the “cool factor” of being able to tell your friends, you’ve slept in a life-sized bubble like an astronaut in some  Space Odessey movie .  But that’s really the only thing it’s got going for it. It’s a bare bones businessman’s sleeping cot.

Check out the Top 10 Capsule Hotels in Japan

What do you compromise for this experience:

  • No charging facilities for batteries and electronics (there’s an outlet in the shared bathroom!).
  • No WiFi and internet facilities were on a separate floor.
  • No eating allowed in the capsule.
  • No checking out the facilities before renting.
  • No credit cards unless you want to pay a % fee.
  • A shared bathroom (… and the aged hotel lobby alone told me what I could expect of that).
  • You must additionally, rent a locker if you have luggage.

All this nothing and “No…” costed around $40.

I stood outside for a while, contemplating the choice, while illegally smoking a cigarette in a non-smoking zone . It was 10pm. The choice was stressful (hence, the cigarette). I had an hour to decide. The train stopped running at midnight.

Go with the capsule or run across town to a manga cafe listing in Shinjuku?  I really needed to charge my camera and iPod batteries for the next day.

Getting to @gran bagus manga cafe in shinjuku.

When I got out of Shinjuku subway, many businesses were already closed. Most building lights were off around Shinjuku station and only a couple of shops were still open, with owners getting ready to leave. No more train service for the evening. Good or bad, this cafe needed to be “it” for the night, but the building wasn’t looking to be an easy find. I asked a passing pedestrian for directions…

“ Haruku Departu-mentu store, doko desu ka? ”  I asked.

The building was around the corner.

When the elevator doors opened, there was already a queue of Japanese waiting to check in. Some were already holding overnight bags. The layout of @Gran Bagus Cafe was black, sleek and glossy. The lounge/lobby area had a wall of soft drink and food vending machines. Two front desk attendants dressed in white long-sleeved shirts were servicing customers. I was in a good place.

gran bagus rates, manga cafe rates tokyo

I looked at the price list on the wall. Feeling fatigue,  I decided to splurge. I’d go for the 9 hour package at a flat cubicle compartment and sleep in.  I needed the rest.

As I said in my first post about manga kissas ,  this isn’t a place for a businessman, who only wants a quick nap time until morning. This has been becoming the place where young ‘un-employees’ are holing up in to avoid high costs of rent. It’s (unofficially)a techno-geek’s relaxed living space, with shower facilities.

What do you get at a boutique manga kissa?

  • Your own private cubicle space and enough sleeping space to sprawl
  • A shared bathroom.
  • Your own charging station, computer and tv counsel, and on top of that… free WiFi!
  • The freedom to eat in your cubicle space
  • Unlimited free soft drinks (anywhere from tomato juice to iced mocha lattes!)
  • Unlimited soft serve ice cream ( yes, soft serve ice cream! )
  • Free luggage storage
  • And access to wall-to-wall manga magazines

And it cost less than the capsule hotel. And unlike a hostel dorm, I had privacy and space!

gran bagus manga cafe, what is a manga cafe

How clean is @Gran Bagus?

Clean. Whenever someone left their cubicle space or I exited the bathroom, a cleaner went in and rigorously cleaned and wiped everything down. For instance, when I walked into the (shared) shower, it felt like having a private hotel bathroom. Everything was clean, sparkly, white and not a drop of water was left as evidence that someone was there before me. I got 20 minutes of shower time. Unlike Popeye Media Cafe , I had to pay a small shower fee, which was almost equivalent to the cost of Popeye’s towel rental (so it actually balances out). For that fee, I got a clean, white towel, free toothbrush and razor .

Where to find the best manga kissas?

@Gran Bagus Cafe and Popeye Media Cafe are well-known chain cafes in Japan. They’re boutique cafes and although they’ll cost a bit more than smaller cafes, they carry the amenities for a comfortable overnight stay.  Not to mention, they have the capacity to bed as many people as a small hotel (Bagus ranged around 200 cubicle spaces). So if you’re looking for a last minute place to crash during the week, your odds aren’t bad. However, for weekends, you might want to get there early to secure a spot. While I can’t vouch for every chain or location. If you know nothing about Japan or were short on time, I’d suggest checking out these larger chains first. They’re more likely to maintain similar standards.

@ Gran Cybe Cafe Bagus in Shibuya , Mitsuyoshi Bldg 6F, Shibuya   www.bagus-99.com/netcafe

What to do with your luggage?

At night, some manga kissas offer luggage storage or you can keep it in your unit.

Storing your luggage in the daytime after you’ve checked out of the cafe, is the real trick… I stored mine train lockers.

Every metro station in Tokyo has locker areas and many of them will fit a standard-sized roll-on suitcase (the size that would fit a plane’s overhead compartment).  It’s 400 yen for a locker for large bags. This is why you may want to consider packing light and taking a roll-on suitcase or small backpack or sports duffle.  If I traveled with my ordinary backpackers backpack, I might have a harder time fitting it into the train lockers.

Have you ever experienced a Tokyo manga cafe or a capsule hotel? What would you choose?
