When choosing the right portable digital piano, you need to have a clear image of your requirements for this instrument.

Will it going to be your first digital piano?

Have you ever played a piano before?

Is it for an adult or child?

Can you handle multiple features or you would like a simpler piano at the moment?

How much do you plan on spending on such an instrument?

Guide to Choosing a Travel-Sized Piano: Playing Piano On the Go

a) How light is it?

(Airlines restrict carry ons to around 12kg. I can carry up to 15kg comfortably if I’ve been to the gym, but do my noodle arms WANT to?)

b) Does it sound nice?

c) Weighted keys or non-weighted keys, that is the question…

Well. I figure that a decent sounding mid-ranged piano = A composed travel buddy = An ideal vacation situation, pianist edition!

Sound too good to be true? Not by the end of this article!

Travel Practice Keyboard under $200

Throughout the past year, I’ve had a lot of students look for a portable piano to practice while on vacation. I’ve rounded up the following keyboards that are good options. They are small, light, and low-cost. They don’t have weighted keys, but they have really good touch sensitivity, which could be just as beneficial on vacation.

They don’t have the full 88 keys, but I’d argue that’s not necessary for a vacation keyboard.

Yamaha Piaggero is a light, touch-sensitive keyboard. Yamaha is known for making touch-sensitive keyboards that are enjoyable to play. This is a great option for anyone looking for a simple, no-nonsense travel keyboard. It also runs on batteries!

Casio Casiotone is also a simple, straightforward keyboard. It can also run on batteries and comes in 3 colours, and has a carrying handle. I haven’t tried this piano yet but it looks like a good option.

A Portable Piano for Composing

In Amsterdam I let my nails grow out, but miss playing without them too soon after . I’ll bet most most pianists prefer it when they feel the keys, too.

If you don’t think you can groom your nails when you’re on the go, consider getting a keyboard with narrower keys. You can utilize your hand-space better, keep up with where the notes are on the board, and be able to hear them too. There’s no point in doing Hanon if your fingers are going to be splayed flat.

The Yamaha Reface CP is a portable keyboard  geared towards people who want to compose and hear the notes rather than keep up their technique. It may also be useful if you teach music online, because students are concerned with seeing the sequence and range of the notes and the mini keys might fit their computer screens better.

The Yamaha Reface CP weighs 6 pounds. Seriously. The portability is so amazing that if I bought it, this would be a serious contender with my laptop for desk space.

Casio CTK2400 PPK  features a stand and headphones in case you can’t play loudly. It doesn’t have weighted keys, though, which is my major concern for such a large keyboard. If it’s taking up so much space, it might as well have proper keys. I’ve played acoustic piano for almost all my life, and non-weighted keys doesn’t cut it for me in terms of getting satisfaction in playing and maintaining technique.

However, if you want a lighter keyboard to carry and non-weighted keys aren’t a huge issue for you, look into this model as it is more portable than some of the other standing keyboards. With playback and recording, it’s a solid option if you compose music. It’s 23.7 pounds, so if you really want to compose or teach remotely, check this one out.

A Portable Piano for Practicing Technique

Most people aren’t on month-long trips with flights every few days , so a keyboard with normal-sized keys will do just fine if you’re looking to maintain technique.

If you care about having fast fingers and decent technique, look into weighted keyboards. They may be heavier keyboards for the same size as a nonweighted keyboard, but it may be worth it to maintain the strength of your fingers, especially if you won’t have access to a real piano for a while.

Weighted keys , which mimic the action of an acoustic piano, becomes important for keeping your fingers nimble, but they do make the overall keyboard heavier. Take a look at the following travel-sized keyboards with weighted keys. They are smaller and lighter- not your play-me-everyday Steinway, of course- but great for travel.

Roland GO  is a light, no-nonsense portable keyboard, great for keeping your fingers nimble while on the road. The touch gives you sensitive weighted keys, which is all I’d need. It also comes with functions like transposing and reverb- always good fun. This one’s 8 pounds, definitely something you can take on most planes.

The GO comes in a few models, each with their own quirks. The GO:Keys is red and comes with more than 500 sounds. GO:Piano has more of a realistic acoustic piano sound and comes with a music stand. As a Classical musician, I would take the GO:Piano because of the music stand and audio quality. When I’m on the road, I don’t have a need for any sounds other than piano.

Roland RD 64  is a larger, more robust, grand piano sounding instrument. The keys are weighted properly, but it doesn’t have a built-in sound system, so you’d connect it to an audio output like an amp or headphones to hear what you’re playing.

It also gives you other instrument options like the organ, but if you’re a classical pianist like me, those aren’t exciting. What’s exciting is that it seems to be the your favourite sounding keyboard that you can carry around. It’s 28.2 pounds–less portable than the last option, plus the amp–but worth looking into if you’re on-the-go and still care about quality of the sound you’re hearing from the instrument.

Yamaha P45  is a bit large for a carryon, but it’s more of your solid keyboard sidekick with pedals, ideal for keeping fingers strong on-the-go and perhaps playing some fancy licks. It gives you features like combining voices and lets you play sounds from your PC, which (for those new to digital composing) is pretty sweet. It’s 36.4 pounds, so definitely less portable than the previous options.

The Roland GO is my favourite travel-sized keyboard with weighted keys. It’s 8 pounds–half the weight of the backpack I carried around Europe, and even then, I almost broke my back.

Just kidding. I lift, dang it!

The other one I really like is the Yamaha Reface CP , if I wanted to compose or teach music on-the-go.

When it comes to making music, I have always loved portable keyboards for their convenience. There’s something nice about having an instrument that I can use for when I’m traveling and need something light. In this article, we will break down the best portable keyboards and help you decide which one is best for your needs.

I’ve played all of these keyboards listed below and I have been playing keyboards for well over 20 years now.

These are all going to be smaller keyboards as well. If you are looking for something a little bit more serious, I would recommend checking out my guide to Digital Pianos .

Quick Glance At My Top Portable Keyboards

What to look for in portable keyboard pianos.

Size:  I suggest staying under 61 keys so you can increase the portability. Having anything bigger means it’s typically going to be a bit heavier. You can find some great options that are smaller, you just have to know what to look for.

Sounds:  Depending on how much song-writing you are doing, you will want something that has some decent sounds and a good variety. For some people, this will be more important than for others.

Speakers/Headphone Jack:  Make sure the speakers are loud enough and get the job done. If they’re not great; you will want a headphone jack, so you can plug headphones in.

Price:  It is important to know just what you need so that you can determine what you want to spend. The great thing here is that these types of keyboards are actually quite inexpensive.

Weight:  The lighter, the better for portable keyboards. The whole point of these is so that they’re easy to travel with.

Recording: Some of these will come with the ability to record and this is a neat feature.

Power Supply:  I love a keyboard that can be powered by just batteries and doesn’t always need a power supply. It’s just way more convenient.

Best Portable Keyboards

I am often asked, can you learn to play the piano on a keyboard ? Before I get into this list, I would like to answer it by saying, yes, you can.

Casio CT-X700

The Casio CT-X700 is extremely budget friendly. It is a great choice if you don't care about weighted keys and you want a lot of sounds.

The Casio CT-X700 is a 61 key keyboard that is a little bit heavier than some options. However, it still only weighs 19 pounds, so it still fits the definition of a portable keyboard in my eyes.

Casio keeps surprising me with their entry-level options as they’re getting some pretty nice sounds on them.

I like the sounds a lot on the CT-X700. I am surprised by all of the features on this keyboard and I think this makes a great portable option. Beginners are going to be happy with this and I think even advanced players will love this for its light-weight

Overall Thoughts

The CT-X700 61 key is a great pick for beginners. I would recommend this as it has great sounds, speakers, and a headphone jack.

Casio SA76 44 mini Sized Keys

I've purchased this for multiple nieces now and this is my go-to for any toddlers. It has some great sounds and powerful speakers for such a cheap price.

The Casio SA76 is a go-to since it is so light and portable. I like this because it is so small and easy to take with me when I travel. It makes as a perfect gift for kids and also a perfect instrument to take with you on the road.

The sounds are surprisingly good for the price range. Don’t expect this to blow you away though. It has some nice and warm pad sounds with a couple of decent sounding pianos with an overall total of 100 sounds.

The keys are mini, so this is good for portability, but bad if you’re looking for something that you can still shred with.

I recently did a review on the Casio SA 77 , which is very similar and you might enjoy the read.

My overall thoughts are that this makes sense if you are on a budget or just simply want something to play with when you’re not on your main keyboard.

I also really like the headphone jack on this. Lastly, it’s power by batteries, making it ultraportable.

Yamaha NP12

The NP-12 is a portable powerhouse that features some great sounds suitable for performing and learning.

The Yamaha NP12 is a great option because it has some cool new-school technology features. You can use this with your iPhone or iPad to access some great learning apps.

You’re getting 61 keys with this keyboard and the overall feel is decent. I say decent, only because sometimes people set their hopes way too high for the price they’re paying for instruments. It’s a good key-bed if you look at the price range.

It has a power supply, but it can also be powered by 6 AA batteries for about 5 hours of use.

When I played the Yamaha NP12, I was really surprised with the sounds and that’s why I put it on this list. For this price, it’s a great option.

Connectivity

The selling point with the NP12 is definitely the ability to have USB and be able to connect to a computer, iPad or iPhone with ease. To do this, all you need is a USB cable. To read more about how to do this, check out my guide on connecting keyboards with USB cables .

I’m not crazy about the key-bed, however, you’re really not going to be crazy about any of the key-beds with portable keyboards. Portability is king with these and the weight of the NP-12 is 14 pounds. For 61 keys, I would consider this a win and I think this is a smart pick for musicians.

Roland Go:88 – Best Portable Keyboard For Price

The Roland GO-88 is a great choice for those on a tight budget. While the sounds aren't as solid as the top picks here, it offers a wide variety of sounds for church performance.

The Roland Go88has some great features. It comes with Bluetooth audio support, which is a new feature for keyboards. Since Roland came out with this; more and more companies have started to introduce Bluetooth technology to their products.

The key-bed on this isn’t the standard Roland key-bed, but it’s not bad. For a portable keyboard, this one has a ton of features that songwriters can take advantage of.

Roland has really marketed this towards traveling songwriters who are on the go frequently.

The Go88 only weighs 8 pounds and that is something I find to be unique for a keyboard with 688 eys.

It is loaded with over 500 different sounds that have Roland’s technology for sound. I personally think most of the songs are of quality.

The samples are probably the best you can find currently for the price. This is a cheaper keyboard that is extremely portable and it also has high-quality samples. That is what makes me like this keyboard so much.

Yamaha PSR-E-3 60

The PSR E360 is loaded with 573 presets and it is a great portable option for beginners. Not only is it lightweight, but the sounds are actually pretty solid as well.

The Yamaha PSR-E-360 is a keyboard I would recommend for beginners and people looking for a second instrument as the sounds surprisngly solid.

It comes with USB so it can be run as a MIDI controller as well. This means that if you aren’t liking the sounds it has, you can get external sounds instead. I love having keyboards that have USB connectivity.

The keys aren’t my favorite on the PSSR-E-360 as they just feel very plasticky and cheap.

As far as the sounds, the speakers are decent. I would recommend using headphones with this keyboard as I’ve had a lot of problems with the onboard speakers. The sounds themselves aren’t bad, it’s just the speakers aren’t extremely powerful.

I would recommend this more to beginners as it has a lot of features geared toward beginners. If you’re not a beginner, maybe go for another option.

Alesis Harmony 61 MKII

The Alesis Harmony is a great look for those in search of a lightweight keyboard for beginners. It comes equipped with over 300 preset sounds ready for exploration as you take on your musical journey.

The Alesis Harmony 61 MKII is a nice look at another keyboard I would recommend more towards beginners. It’s not going to blow you away with what it can do, but it’s got some nice features for beginners.

If you have any musical knowledge, you may not like the sounds of this keyboard. It sounds rather cheap and the speakers aren’t very good either. I personally understand that it’s meant for beginners and to me that just automatically says that the sounds are going to be cheap.

If you are looking for a back-up keyboard and aren’t a beginner, I wouldn’t recommend this. I don’t personally believe you will be happy with it unless you are a beginner.

There are a ton of great options for portable keyboards. Make sure that you keep an open mind when looking at these types of keyboards as I don’t suggest them for advanced players unless you’re looking for simply something portable.

A lot of portable keyboards are typically meant for beginners, however, as I said, I love having one with me at all times in my car. You never know when creativity is going to strike, so it’s always good to have something for those occasions.

Hello Chris, My name is Fred Sweeney. I’ve been playing most of my life have a very old Roland (JV-90) and am looking to get a newer portable keyboard. I’m an older guy (64) and play mostly classic rock. Would like your suggestions for a keyboard that has the following sounds ( piano, electric/Rhodes type sound, organ (possibly)with a Leslie like sound) clavinet, brass and a strings patch). I understand that are a lot more sound than that, but the above are 95% of what I need. Please advise when you can. Thank you.

I have a couple of suggestions for portable keyboards: The Yamaha NP-12 and the Roland GO. They both have pretty nice sounding electric piano sounds. Another one would be the Casio CTX-700. The Casio CTX-700 has some great sounds for its price.

Hi Chris, My name is Elise and I am a music teacher and composer. I am in need of a portable, roll-up keyboard. I haven’t seen the greatest reviews on them and I was wondering if you have any suggestions. I’ll be going on about a week long trip in June and would need something that can fit in a bus full of students.

Hi, I started to learn piano few months ago. Because I need to travel most of the time, I have not enough time for study. I’m looking for a small keyboard, to take with me for training. I think that 36 keys are ok for me, but the size of the key must be normal, not mini. Could you recomend me something? Thank you.

Do you recommend any of the folding keyboards?

I am a drummer who plays in a duo with an acoustic guitarist. I play on an Alesis Strike Kit and want to add a small keyboard to the left side of my kit to play basic chords using my left hand to help fill out the sound. I will still play drums with just my right hand. I am not looking to break the bank though I do want decent sounds (organs, strings, synths) What suggestions do you have? Thanks so much!

After fiddling with his grandpa's old Yamaha PSR-E323, my then ten-year-old son ended up learning to play the main theme of Fur Elise. And he did so with just the built-in tutorial features, without help from anyone else.

His curiosity soon developed into a passion for playing and learning, so he needed a beginner-friendly keyboard. So, after much research, I ended up getting him the current generation model of his grandpa's keyboard, the Yamaha PSR-E373.

The PSR-E373 is part of Yamaha's long-running PSR line of portable keyboards. It has 61 synth-style touch sensitive keys with over 600 voices, and multiple rhythms and effects.

What sets it apart from its predecessors is its improved sound processing and the use of better sound samples. Some sounds are taken from Yamaha's more expensive digital piano keyboards.

It also has built-in lessons that teach students how to play various songs, from kid-friendly tunes to classical pieces.

The keybed doesn't stray from standard piano size, so there's no need to adjust finger positioning when playing on stage-ready 88-key digital piano keyboards or an actual piano. But there is a big difference in playing feel because this one has a lighter "synth style" action. The keys have uniform weight and are easy to press, making for a more relaxed keyboard playing experience. Most young musicians, including my son, prefer this softer feel over the weighted keys feel of an acoustic piano.

Touch sensitivity adjusts the volume of the note you're playing in relation to how hard you press the keys. This results in more control over dynamics. Four Touch sensitivity settings are available: Soft , Medium , Hard , and Fixed . My son and I are content with the default medium setting. We can hear the dynamic differences as we lighten our key presses and pound on the keys.

Those who want the keys to respond to lighter playing will appreciate the Soft setting. Hard setting is meant for those who are used to playing acoustic pianos and weighted keys. Fixed setting disables touch sensitivity altogether, much like how old synths behave. For the price, the Yamaha PSR-E373 has good touch sensitivity, comparable to the more expensive keyboards that I've tried.

The main advantage of the PSR-E373 over its predecessors is the use of premium voices and samples. These sound samples are taken directly from their former flagship Tyros line. And because of that, there was a lot of hype about its sound quality being better than more expensive keyboards from other brands.

Thankfully, the hype turned out to be real - the main voicings sound great. Especially the grand piano sound, sampled from a costly Yamaha CFX concert grand piano.

Since my son is into classical piano pieces and taking piano lessons, having a good piano sound is our primary concern. And the PSR-E373 did not disappoint.

This portable keyboard comes with built-in lessons. It has breakdowns of popular piano standards, classical pieces, nursery rhymes, pop songs, and more. My son used this to learn Fur Elise on his own.

It has controls for phrase repeat and adjusting tempo, which helped my son focus on sections he struggles with. There's even a lesson that teaches dynamic playing. Other lessons include chord study and chord progression.

Note that while these built-in lessons are helpful, there still needs to be a substitute for a good tutor. And speaking of tutors, this keyboard is tutor and student-friendly, with its tap tempo metronome and a built-in chord dictionary. This portable keyboard piano also has headphones for quiet practice. Unfortunately, it doesn't have dual headphone outputs, which would also be great for tutors to listen in.

The Yamaha PSR-E373 has exceeded most of my expectations. It truly is instrumental in developing my son's playing and love for music - definitely worth getting.

Things to Consider When Buying a Portable Keyboard Piano

It would be wise for beginners to start with something portable. Even experienced musicians can benefit. Even pros who are torn between Synthesizer vs Keyboard arrangers have to compromise for portability.

Portable keyboards come with built-in speakers, amplifiers, and the ability to run on batteries . This allows them to be used virtually anywhere. They also come in compact profiles to limit size and weight to more manageable levels.

Note that keyboard speakers impact volume and sound quality. Don't expect the small speakers that come with keyboards to be loud and have deep sound. To make the most out of the sound of your piano keyboard, you will want to plug it into a keyboard amp or a PA system.

Most modern keyboards already have some accompaniment features. But arranger keyboards give you more control over the accompaniment, and some even allow you to edit or create yourself. Some arranger keyboards also have MIDI compatibility, allowing them to serve as controllers. If you're looking for a more portable MIDI controller, then go for one of the best 61 key MIDI controller

Key Size, Action, and Sensitivity

But be warned that hammer action keybed is heavy, so you won't find one in a travel keyboard piano. Also, they are usually more expensive. They are not priced under $500. Most of the keyboards in this price range have softer synth style keys. The advantage that they bring is that they are easier on the hands.

Touch response and sensitivity are features that separate toys from real instruments. They should be considered when looking for small keyboards piano. Sensitivity lets you control the volume of each note depending on how hard you press the keys. It lets you better express your music, much like an acoustic piano would.

On the flipside, there are those with fewer keys, making them cheaper and easier to carry, at the expense of having limited notes to play with.

The 61-Key configuration sits nicely in between big 88 key keyboards, and small 44 key keyboards. It has good access to notes while keeping the instrument reasonably portable.

Many also come with drum and percussion sounds. Others have pre-made rhythms that can be used to accompany you as you play. These are fun features to use, and more importantly, for training to improve your timing.

Note that there are keyboards in this price range that are similar to most digital pianos. They focus more on sound quality and playability, with more streamlined features. These often have good sounding real grand piano sounds, electric piano, upright piano, and other piano sounds. Best Portable Keyboard Piano Selection Methodology

The first edition was published in 2016. The current edition was published on Feb 21, 2024.

To be eligible for this guide and to meet the portability requirement, each keyboard had to have the option of running on batteries and have built-in speakers so you don't have to use them with an amplifier. Like we normally do, we limited our scope to keyboards that are widely available from US retailers, to make sure that you can readily get the keyboards that we recommend.

We ended up with a short list of 19 keyboards, which entailed the analysis of over 45,00 relevant ratings and reviews. All these data were analyzed and fed into the Gearank Algorithm, which gave us rating scores out of 100 that represent what the market actually feels about each instrument in real life. We then used the scores to narrow down the list further to the highest rated options. Finally, we divided our list to two sets, first of which feature the best arranger keyboards and the second one showcases the best regular portable keyboards . Tips for Buying Portable Keyboards

Look for the keyboard size and the key size.

Standard full-size keyboards measure around 17 inches in length, making them impractical for travel even though they are the preferred option for many people at home because of the full functionality offered by having all 104 keys, including a full number pad and function keys. Smaller options include tenkeyless or TKL keyboards (full-size keyboards without a number pad, which measure approximately 14 inches in length) and 75 percent, 65 percent, and 60 percent keyboards. 

The most popular layout for a portable keyboard is 60 percent, because it’s compact at roughly 11 inches in length. However, with just 61 keys on average, you’ll be sacrificing a number pad, function row, and arrow keys. This loss of functionality may be worth it for those that travel a lot and have no need for these keys; however, professionals who regularly input a lot of numbers, gamers, or those who intend to use their keyboard full-time may prefer to stick with one of the larger keyboard sizes. 

Buying a separate number pad, touchpad, or mouse is also an option for those that need them but want to keep their main keyboard small. Typically, travel-sized keyboards simply use less keys, rather than using smaller keys in order to maintain typing accuracy. 

Make sure it works with your devices

The majority of portable keyboards use Bluetooth or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to connect to your device. You’ll need to check that your device is enabled for the necessary technology. This should be clear from your device’s product description or user manual; if not, most keyboards offer specs that list the operating systems and specific models that they are compatible with. If your device isn’t Bluetooth- or BLE-enabled look for a keyboard that offers a USB receiver or dongle connection instead. Again, you’ll need to make sure that your device has the appropriate port (or adapter) required to connect. Tablet keyboards are typically specific to a certain model, so be sure to purchase the one that’s made for yours. 

All of the keyboards on this list use Bluetooth or BLE technology to connect to your device. Benefits of these technologies include longer battery life and the ability to connect to any device that’s Bluetooth or BLE enabled, even if it doesn’t have a USB port. However, if you have an older device that doesn’t support these technologies but does have a USB port, a 2.4 gHz wireless USB receiver or dongle is another option. 

Gamers often prefer a 2.4 gHz receiver since it offers a more reliable connection with none of the latency issues that can affect Bluetooth pairings. It should be noted that this slight lag rarely affects other users. Finally, it is possible to find a portable laptop with a wired connection. Again, you’ll need to make sure your device has the correct kind of USB port; if not, you will need to buy an adapter. 

Many portable keyboards are powered by an internal lithium battery that can be recharged via a USB cable plugged into your laptop, portable charger , or a regular outlet. Some keyboards use disposable batteries, while tablet keyboards often draw charge directly from the tab itself. If battery life is a primary concern, look for keyboard models with charge-saving features such as an automatic sleep mode or an on/off button. Backlighting is handy if you often work in low-light conditions but it does drain battery quickly. Choosing a model with sensor-activated backlighting or backlighting that can be dimmed or turned off is a good way to mitigate this. 

The short answer is yes, you can bring a portable keyboard on the plane. Regardless of which size you go for, it should fit comfortably in your carry-on luggage or backpack (just be sure to pack it carefully to avoid damage.) Policies differ from one airline to the next, but the Federal Aviation Administration says that devices containing non-removable lithium batteries should be packed in personal item bags rather than checked bags, so bear that in mind if it applies to your keyboard. 

You should only use the keyboard at times when flight-safe electronics are permitted to be switched on. Besides, the fact that tray tables have to be stowed during take-off and landing would make it tricky to use a keyboard during these stages of the flight anyway.

The Atlanta producer Rico Wade was the de facto leader of the Dungeon Family, the loose collective of rappers and musicians that coalesced around his mother’s smoke-filled Georgia basement — a.k.a. the Dungeon — in the mid-90s. Wade’s open doors and nurturing vision became the engine of Atlanta’s creative explosion, tilting the spotlight away from New York and Los Angeles and toward the homegrown sounds of artists like Outkast, Goodie Mob, Killer Mike, Janelle Monáe and eventually Wade’s younger cousin Future. Wade’s death at 52 was announced on social media last Saturday.

Beyond his roles as conceptualist and deal maker, Wade served as one-third of the adventurous production team Organized Noize. The crew’s red-clay-scuffed sound was steeped in vintage ’70s soul, cutting-edge electronica, murky noise, slurping hi-hats and the warmth of live instruments. Working alongside the melodic sensibilities of Sleepy Brown and the beatmaking prowess of Ray Murray, Wade was “the mouthpiece,” Outkast’s Big Boi said in the 2016 documentary “The Art of Organized Noize.” “He was the inspiration guy; he could sell it.”

Four aspiring rappers with wildly different styles, the members of Goodie Mob were grouped together by Wade, who supplied the quartet with darker, moodier beats than the more playful and colorful ones he made for Outkast. Inspired by the raw, noisy clank of Jeru the Damaja’s 1993 East Coast hit “Come Clean,” “Cell Therapy” was built on a swirl of dub-inflected noise and an icy piano riff. Goodie Mob painted with dark lyrics gleaned from a copy of Milton William Cooper’s Illuminati manifesto “Behold a Pale Horse” that Busta Rhymes gave to the group. Khujo Goodie told VladTV that Reid allowed them to take a risk with the track: “‘Man, run with it. I trust Organized Noize.’ And to this day it’s a pillar in hip-hop.”

Goodie Mob featuring Big Boi & Cool Breeze, “Dirty South” (1995)

Over a shadowy Organized Noize production, the Dungeon Family member Cool Breeze introduces the phrase “dirty South,” a description that would grow to become as ubiquitous as the movement itself. “As far as the term go, we never got paid for none of that [expletive]. But as far as the way it’s been capitalized, now everybody got ‘dirty south’ records, and ‘dirty south’ movies,” Wade told Complex . “I didn’t know we should trademark that.”

Outkast, “Two Dope Boyz (In a Cadillac)” (1996)

“It was Wu-Tang-ish. And we knew that. But it was still Southern,” Wade told Boiler Room . “We felt like we opened up that gateway where we could bridge this gap.” Though Organized Noize rarely relied on heavy sampling, “Two Dope Boyz” loops the evocative, nighttime croon of the Chicago soul group Five Stairsteps, setting the tone for the psychedelic space-noir of Outkast’s second album, “ATLiens. ”

En Vogue, “Don’t Let Go (Love)” (1996)

Wade told Complex the biggest song of En Vogue’s career was originally meant for Mick Jagger and was turned into a smash for the girl group by the record executive Sylvia Rhone. Ray Murray later said this majestic, lush, tympani-pounding track was a pure Wade invention: Murray was originally writing the beat as a rap song for Cool Breeze to rhyme over, but Wade had the foresight to give it to the R&B trio, resulting in a Grammy-nominated No. 2 hit.

Witchdoctor featuring André 3000, “Dez Only 1” (1997)

After its huge pop successes, Organized Noize signed a deal with Interscope. While its brief dalliance with the major label in the late ’90s did not yield any pop home runs, the moment coincided with what many consider to be the production trio’s creative apex. Its most out-there and ambitious release was the debut LP from the M.C. Witchdoctor, “A S.W.A.T. Healin’ Ritual,” a one-of-a-kind blend of Afrocentrism, voodoo imagery, unflinching street reality, off-kilter flows and skittering beats reminiscent of British drum-and-bass music. The spiritual “Dez Only 1” finds Witchdoctor, Big Boi and André 3000 celebrating God over a track that sounds like chittering birdsong.

Cool Breeze featuring Outkast, Goodie Mob and Witchdoctor, “Watch for the Hook (Dungeon Family Mix)” (1999)

The ultimate Dungeon Family posse cut features nine M.C.s and a skipping snippet of Merry Clayton’s soul-funk cover of Neil Young’s “Southern Man.” “We was all able to study each other’s rhymes before we did our particular verses,” Big Gipp told Hot 107.9 in Atlanta . Once André 3000 laid down his verse, “it was like, ‘OK, everybody gotta get their good pen out.’”

Outkast, “So Fresh, So Clean” (2000)

By 2000, Outkast’s André 3000 and Big Boi had grown into formidable producers in their own rights, as evidenced by the group’s first No. 1 single, “Ms. Jackson.” However, their old collaborators Organized Noize supplied the follow-up. Sleepy Brown came up with the melody on the keyboard and Wade provided the iconic lyrics: The chorus came to him while he was literally getting fresh and clean in the shower, Brown told Red Bull Music Academy .
