THEY COME FROM NANCY MOMMY! The core of Nancy’s sound is high-energy punk with a glammy, power-pop edge. The glam rock twinge to the guitar-playing and the vocal melodies makes me think of the Boys or Protex, but Nancy’s hyperactive tempos are more akin to the Dickies and the Jabbers, and the songwriting is in the same league as all those great bands. If the Nancy boys just strung together their classic bunch of punk bangers it would still be killer, but there’s also this whole other level to the Nancy experience. Nancy has an off the wall sense of humor that ranges from the satirical to the silly to the surreal. There are very few bands out there who will make you smile and get you excited the way Nancy does, especially when watching them rip through their raucous live set. There are a lot of options out there for dumb, sing-songy punk, but Nancy are right at the top of the heap. I mean, it’s your basic Ramones rip off (though their newer stuff is a hair more musically sophisticated and borders on power pop), but the execution is completely flawless and the gleeful sense of absurdity is totally infectious. I mean, this is the band that has their own sea shanty!

Watch: HEART Plays First Concert In More Than Four Years

HEART played its first concert in more than four years Wednesday night (December 27) at Yaamava' Resort & Casino in Highland, California.

According to Setlist.fm , HEART kicked off its 14-song set with the title track of the band's 1980 album "Bébé Le Strange" and finished the show with a cover of LED ZEPPELIN 's "Stairway To Heaven" .

The setlist was as follows:

01. Bébé Le Strange 02. Never 03. Magic Man 04. Love Alive 05. Little Queen 06. Straight On 07. Let's Dance 08. These Dreams 09. Alone 10. What About Love 11. Mistral Wind 12. Crazy On You 13. Barracuda 14. Stairway To Heaven (LED ZEPPELIN cover)

Prior to the Highland show, HEART 's last concert took place in October 2019 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

HEART has two more shows scheduled for this week —December 28 in Palm Desert, California; and December 31 in Seattle, Washington.

In a recent interview with the 96.1 KLPX radio station, HEART 's Ann Wilson , who has been working on solo projects, and in September of this year released the album "Another Door" , billed as ANN WILSON & TRIPSITTER , stated about HEART 's reunion concerts: "We're gonna see how it works with the HEART thing, whether it feels like a level up. If it does feel like a level up, then we'll keep doing it. But that's what it has to be. It can't just slide down into jukebox time… It's gotta be real. No going through the motions. No phoning it in. No just getting on some kind of circuit just to take people's money and play the old songs again and again and again. No, we're gonna make it cool, really make it cool."

Ann 's sister, HEART guitarist Nancy Wilson made a surprise appearance during Ann 's concert on October 10 in Santa Rosa, California.

Nancy joined her sister and TRIPSITTER on stage at the Luther Burbank Center For The Arts in Nancy 's hometown to perform the HEART classic "Barracuda" .

This past June, Nancy revealed in an interview with Joe Rock of Long Island, New York's rock station 102.3 WBAB that she was working on fresh music with Ann . The 69-year-old musician, who has spent some of the recent months on tour with her new band NANCY WILSON'S HEART , broke the news of her latest collaboration with Ann while discussing some of her current recording projects, including "Tomboy" , which involves covering songs written by her male friends.

"I think right now I've been working on 'Tomboy' the most because I love the title, for one thing; it's almost like 'boy genius' or something," she explained. "But I've got a bunch of new ideas for songs. But I've also been writing new music with Ann too. So it's a real creative time. I think being on the tour right now, when I get home, I'm gonna really dig into the other projects, including finishing some new material with Ann . So it's really a good time to be creative. And I've got a new studio in my house, and so I can't wait to sort of run tape on stuff."

Asked if there is anything that she feels is really exciting because she feels it's something that's so different from what she's done before, Nancy said: "Yeah. Some of the stuff I've been working on with Ann is like that. I've also worked a bit with Sue Ennis , who used to work a lot with me and Ann for HEART music. And so I have some lyrics mainly that I worked on with Sue and took to Ann . And there's a couple of things that I'm really excited about. Very cool. Like stuff that you wouldn't have heard us do in the '80s. [It's] closer to what you would have heard us originally do in the '70s, late '70s. So it's really fun. It's just exciting and inspiring."

Nancy went on to say that she is really pleased to be collaborating on new material with her sister. "It's been a really nice kind of rediscovery of our relationship, working on music together again," she said. "So, yeah, I'm really happy about that."

In July 2022, Ann told Grammy.com that she and her sister had plans for the band to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2023. "Yes, we do," she said. "I'm not at liberty to say exactly what they are yet because it's such early days, but sure. It will be next year. And we're doing a thing. Definitely. We're still formulating it now."

Ann 's comments came three months after she denied rumors of a rift with Nancy . In an interview in the 300th issue of Classic Rock , Ann said that she was "not" feuding with her younger sister. "It's a myth," she insisted. " Nancy and I are okay with each other. We just have different ideas for what HEART should be, and we haven’t figured out a compromise yet.

"Fifty years on, I still want it to break barriers and rules, and she's more satisfied to ride the L.A. imaging thing and just do legacy stuff," Ann explained. "So that's a real split between us. Things like this will happen, though, but then they'll get better, and we'll love each other more."

Relations between the two sisters were considered to be at an all-time low after a much-publicized incident when Ann 's husband was arrested during a HEART tour in 2016. But in an interview with Rock Candy magazine to coincide with the release of her new solo album, "Fierce Bliss" , Ann said: "Things happen in families. And that was a really good example of something that happened within a family, and we worked it out. But the part that made it hard was that it happened in the public eye. If it had happened privately, we'd have got the family in a room and sat down and worked it out between us. Instead, the police were called, and this myth was born that Nancy and I were feuding, and we were at each other's throats all the time. And it's really not like that at all."

A proposed HEART tour fell through last year after the two sisters failed to agree on which backing band to use. Ann wanted her guys, Nancy didn't. But Ann later said that another HEART album, which would be the band's first since 2016's "Beautiful Broken" , was a definite possibility, especially considering the fact that 2023 marks HEART 's 50th anniversary.

"It depends on the songs," she said in her Rock Candy interview. "The songs lead everything. And I'm writing songs again now. I don't know if they'll be for my solo thing or for HEART . But yes, I would like to make another HEART album."

Ann previously said that HEART would celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2023 "because next year's the 50-year [anniversary] of when we actually got together and got going," she told Liz Barnes of Planet Rock 's "My Planet Rocks" . " Nancy didn't join until '75, but the band got going in '73. So, yeah, we have a bunch of stuff planned for next year. So I can definitely see HEART doing something."

In February 2022, Nancy spoke to Joe Rock about why HEART had been inactive for most of the previous three years.

" HEART had a big offer on the table [in 2021] for a bigger tour, but Ann wasn't interested in going out with my lineup of guys that we were out with before," she said. "She has a new lineup of guys that she wanted me to join up with. And I sort of [thought] I don't really know them and don't have loyalty yet for anybody like that."

HEART toured North America in the summer of 2019 after the aforementioned nasty split that kept the Wilson sisters estranged for three years.

Ann and Nancy had a falling out during HEART 's 2016 tour, when Ann 's husband Dean Welter was arrested for assaulting Nancy 's then-16-year-old twin sons in a backstage altercation at a gig near their hometown of Seattle. He pleaded guilty to two lesser assault charges to avoid jail time.

After completing HEART 's 2016 tour, Nancy formed a new band called ROADCASE ROYALE and released an album, "First Things First" . ROADCASE ROYALE featured three members of HEART along with Liv Warfield from Prince 's NEW POWER GENERATION band and her guitarist Ryan Wilson .

In Nancy 's new band NANCY WILSON'S HEART , she is joined in the group by her longtime collaborators, guitarist Ryan Waters , drummer Ben Smith , bassist Andy Stoller and keyboardist Dan Walker , along with powerhouse singer Kimberly Nichole .

So, Is It a Tour? Heart Books More Concerts, First Shows Since 2019

Sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson, in an undated photo, via Heart’s Facebook page

They’re not calling it a reunion—and haven’t announced a tour, yet—but sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson have revealed many more Heart concerts. What makes them of particular interest is that unlike the previous three, which all took place in December 2023, the latest shows are for Spring and Summer 2024. On Jan. 18, it was announced that they’ll be performing during the first weekend of Jazz Fest in late April. They’ll also be playing the Tons of Rock festival in Oslo, Norway, in late June as well as several dates on the Def Leppard – Journey Summer Stadium Tour in the U.S. It had been a month since the trio of December shows—all on the U.S. west coast—were announced. On Oct. 24, the sisters first made the surprise announcement of their return with a Dec. 31 show to be held in Seattle, Wash. That celebration, from “Seattle’s own,” will ring in the New Year with special guest Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin’s Evening. Tickets for the U.S. shows are on sale here .

The sisters shared the stage on Oct. 10 when Nancy Wilson was a surprise guest at Ann Wilson’s concert for a brief Heart reunion in Santa Rosa, Calif. As the stunned audience applauded, Nancy strode across the stage and planted a kiss on her sister’s cheeck, as the crowd roared its approval. The pair performed Heart ‘s classic rock favorite, “Barracuda.” That was the first time that the sisters had performed together on stage since 2019. In an extensive 2021 interview with Best Classic Bands, Nancy Wilson said, “Live Nation has put a big offer on the table for Heart for 2022. That will be a really fun thing to look forward to! Ann and I are both up for it.”

Regrettably, things changed, and it never took place as the sisters again toured separately in 2022.

Watch them perform “Barracuda” on October 10, 2023

In 2016, the sisters had a falling out over a family dispute. Before Nancy and Ann reunited as Heart for their big “Love Alive” tour in 2019, they performed together in New York City for a benefit concert.

“We’re sisters, first and foremost,” Nancy Wilson said in our interview, “and that’s the most important story to tell about Heart. It’s not really a business between me and Ann. It shouldn’t really be a business. That [doesn’t] help the sisterhood. That’s where the blood is thicker than water. That’s the biggest joy to celebrate.” She turns 70 on March 16, 2024. Older sister Ann turned 73 on June 19.

Nancy Wilson Wraps Up Spring Tour with Heart Hits and Rock Classics

The guitar icon put on a magnificent performance

nancy band tour

Last night, Heart’s Nancy Wilson wrapped up her spring tour at the Wind Creek Event Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The guitar icon took the stage with her band and treated the capacity crowd to several Heart hits mixed with some other great rock classics. The capacity crowd gave her a warm welcome, and she proceeded to roll through a solid 14-song set.

Wilson strolled onto the stage with a gorgeous Martin guitar slung over her shoulder, which was incredibly fitting considering the factory is right down the road in Nazareth. She kicked things off with a lovely rendition of “Band on the Run” by Paul McCartney and Wings. Another Wings track – “Let Me Roll It” – would also get some love later on.

Nancy Wilson live 2023 Matt Bishop

Next up was Heart’s punchy “Straight On.” It’s a bite-your-bottom-lip kind of a song, and there was plenty of grooving going on in the crowd. Shortly, “Alone” and “These Dreams” were incredible back-to-back, with soaring vocal harmonies the elicited an incredible reaction from the fans. While Heart lead Ann Wilson’s voice is renowned and Nancy is known for her guitar chops, more die-hard fans of the band know that Nancy also has a pair of pipes herself. She turned in a fantastic vocal performance along with her signature riffs.

Some other non-Heart highlights included a gorgeous cover of Van Halen’s 1988 hit “When It’s Love” and Pink Floyd’s iconic “Comfortably Numb.” Towards the end of the set, things got a lot grittier when Wilson ripped through two of Heart’s heaviest hits – “Crazy on You” and “Barracuda.” The riffs continued to rain down with Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll.”

nancy band tour

The sole encore song was “4 Edward,” a beautiful acoustic tribute to the late Eddie Van Halen. The track is from her debut solo rock album, You and Me , which arrived back in 2021. After blowing the roof off the joint with the last three songs, it was a wonderful way to ease the crowd out the door.

At this point, Wilson’s legacy is cemented. She’s was a guitar god during the decade that defined rock and roll. At this point, any performance, whether solo or with Heart, is an absolute privilege to witness.

Nancy Wilson Plans To Take Heart On Tour Without Ann Wilson

By Andrew Magnotta @AndrewMagnotta

February 23, 2022

nancy band tour

Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson plans to get the band back together this year, but with one key member conspicuously absent: her sister Ann Wilson .

Nancy Wilson's Heart will feature Nancy alongside bassist Andy Stoller , drummer Ben Smith , keyboardist Dan Walker and guitarist Ryan Waters .

Ann's lead vocals will be handled by Kimberly Nichole , a Seattle native known for her part in Broadway's Rocktopia and her strong performance on Season 8 of NBC's The Voice .

The new version of the band represents a compromise between the sisters, whom Nancy says could not agree on a live lineup for a tour last year.

"Heart had a big offer on the table last year for a bigger tour, but Ann wasn't interested in going out with my lineup of guys that we were out with before," Nancy said in a recent radio interview.

"She has a lineup of guys that she wanted me to join with. I don't really know them and don't have loyalty yet for anybody like that. So I just kind of shined it on and decided when I do go out with my new singer Kimberly, I can telegraph to the people coming to the show that they're gonna heart Heart songs in a whole different way."

Anyone who saw Heart in 2019 for the Wilson sisters' reunion saw the band with Stoller, Smith, Walker and Waters in tow. Waters and Smith were both members of Nancy's Roadcase Royale side project before joining Heart.

For anyone curious, Nichole is no Ann Wilson sound-alike. Nancy says the the two singers are "apples and oranges" vocally.

While Nancy released her long-awaited solo album, You and Me , last year, she indicated that Nancy Wilson's Heart will predominantly pull from her Heart catalog for its live shows. The band debuted live last month in Las Vegas supporting Styx and there's talk of the two acts touring together this summer.

Ann, meanwhile, is planning to deliver another solo album in April, titled Fierce Bliss .

Review: Heart’s New Year’s Eve bash

Concert review.

Standing in front of a packed house at Climate Pledge Arena, Ann Wilson reflected on the fact that many people weren’t quite sure what to make of two sisters playing hard rock when they first started out in the 1970s.

“We’ve come a long way since then,” Wilson said to cheers.

Heart, Seattle legends long before grunge put the city on the map for its music, helped ring in the new year Sunday night and proved looking back can be just as rewarding as forging ahead.

The concert was a prelude to a midnight fireworks show at Seattle Center and the band, led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, took fans right up to the final seconds of 2023 with a satisfying 90-minute celebration of some of rock’s greatest riffs.

Things were almost derailed before Heart took the stage when opener Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening was so bass-heavy it drowned out almost every other aspect of the band. Arenas are often tricky venues when it comes to achieving a clear mix, and at first, it seemed like it might be a rough night for Heart, which these days consists of the Wilsons and Ann Wilson’s band Tripsitter.

Fortunately, by the time Heart opened its set with “Bebe Le Strange,” the improved sound quality was dramatic and immediately apparent. Both Wilson sisters sounded great, especially for having been inactive since 2019.

While Heart is partly known for its powerful guitar work, the Wilsons’ pop sensibilities came out on “Never,” one of four Top-10 hits off their self-titled 1985 album that signaled Heart’s embrace of glam rock.

Hard-driving folk ballad “Love Alive” was another standout vocal performance and even though the song came out just eight years before “Never,” the difference in style and era was stark and a testament to the band’s staying power and willingness to reinvent itself.

It wasn’t all classic cuts. The band also played a new song that Nancy wrote about coming out of the pandemic and learning to socialize again called “Roll the Dice” and a cover of the Tripsitter song “This Is Now.” The crowd, mostly older folks with a smattering of millennials, was appreciative, but it was clear they came to hear the hits.

Heart didn’t disappoint. “Magic Man” and its iconic riff momentarily brought the crowd to its feet, but this was mostly a sit-down affair. Even when the gritty sleaze of “Straight On” turned into David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” not many seemed up to the offer.

Synth-laden “These Dreams,” another hit off Heart’s self-titled album, was just as effective an earworm on the final night of 2023 as it was in 1985, while “Alone” and “What About Love” merged into an effective medley.

“Mistral Wind,” off Heart’s 1978 album “Dog & Butterfly,” was dark and foreboding, appropriately calling to mind Led Zeppelin. You could hear Robert Plant’s charismatic danger in Ann Wilson’s voice as she wailed in tandem with a screaming guitar solo.

Heart finished things off with “Barracuda,” still just as snarling and angry as it was in 1977. Unfortunately, by the time the song ended, it was closing in on midnight, and many in the crowd, seemingly eager to grab a spot outside to watch fireworks shoot off the Space Needle, started heading for the exits. It was a shame the timing had to be so tight, especially since Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening didn’t come on until 9 p.m.

As many continued to file out, Heart came back for the Led Zeppelin song “The Battle of Evermore” before ringing in 2024 with their classic hit “Crazy On You.”

Heart Announces 2024 ‘Royal Flush’ Tour With Cheap Trick

Heart has announced the 2024 Royal Flush tour with support from Cheap Trick , marking their first extended trek since 2019.

The North American leg will launch on April 20 in Greenville, South Carolina, and conclude on Sept. 22 in Morrison, Colorado. Heart will also head to Europe in late June through mid-July, with Squeeze opening select dates.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday through Heart's website . You can see the full list of tour dates below.

Heart's Recent Touring History and Family Drama

Heart last hit the road in 2019 for the Love Alive tour, ending a three-year hiatus and estrangement between Ann and Nancy Wilson . The sisters put the band on hold after Ann's husband was arrested for allegedly hitting one of Nancy's children during Heart's 2016 tour.

Following the 2019 trek, Heart once again took an extended break, during which both sisters released solo music and Nancy toured under the name Nancy Wilson's Heart. Although some onlookers have questioned whether tensions remain between the Wilson sisters, Ann insisted in 2022 that there was no lingering animosity.

"It's a myth," the singer  said . "Nancy and I are OK with each other. We just have different ideas for what Heart should be, and we haven't figured out a compromise yet."

Heart reunited for a trio of shows at the end of 2023, marking their first performances in four years. In addition to their headlining tour, they'll support  Def Leppard  and Journey on a handful of their stadium tour dates this summer. Nancy Wilson also said last June that she and Ann were working on new material that's "closer to what you would have heard us originally do in the '70s, late '70s. So it's really fun, it's just exciting and inspiring."

  • Gabrielle Calise Times staff

The weather isn’t the only thing heating up around Tampa Bay.

Not only is Megan Thee Stallion bringing her “Hot Girl Summer Tour” to town — there’s a sizzling slate of concerts for fans of just about every music genre.

Expect to see some fun pairings, from longtime peers (Missy Elliott with Busta Rhymes) to some wild mashups (Red Hot Chili Peppers and...Ice Cube?). Sting, who just swung through Tampa with Billy Joel , will even return two more times to rock out with the Florida Orchestra.

Here are over 50 local shows we’re excited about.

Living legends

Diana Ross: The legendary Motown singer will bring solo hits and favorite songs from the Supremes to the BayCare Sound in Clearwater on Thursday, May 9.

Janet Jackson: The “Together Again” tour comes to MidFlorida Credit Union Ampitheatre in Tampa on Tuesday, July 16.

Sting and the Florida Orchestra : The “Englishman in New York” join conductor Michael Francis and the Florida Orchestra for two intimate benefit concerts. Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10 at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg.

The Magpie Arc

nancy band tour

The UK’s Folk/Rock “Supergroup“ (said the BBC!) (Findlay Napier, Martin Simpson, Tom A. Wright, Nancy Kerr, Alex Hunter)

Some Press “Folk/rock with Led Zeppelin vibes” (Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2) “Just the right amount of Black Sabbath for folk/rock” (Rockslam Podcast)

The Magpie Arc is a cross-Border band out of Sheffield, Arran and Edinburgh featuring the multi-award-winning talents and wide musical influences of Nancy Kerr, Findlay Napier, Tom A. Wright, Alex Hunter and UK folk legend, guitarist Martin Simpson. Formed from the idea of bringing together a group of established folk musicians who would mix their unique song-writing styles and musicianship in a full-on electric band to create exciting new music and update the classic 60’s and 70’s British folk/rock sound, the possibilities of The Magpie Arc being something special and unique on today’s folk scene became obvious very quickly. Having three strong writers the focus has naturally been on new material, however they’ve also tackled some great covers plus their own re-workings of traditional songs. There’s folk, rock, a bit of country and even some prog-rock elements, but whatever the genre the band are their own musical mix of everything you could expect from such a line-up, with excellent songs, lush harmonies, scything electric guitars, gorgeous fiddle lines and rock solid bass and drums. The buzz about seeing the band live and the anticipation among those in the know all became clear as they hit festival stages during the summer of 2022, where only their fifth gig was the Main Stage at the Cambridge Folk Festival, and 2023 kicked off in style with a live session on Mark Radcliffe’s 10th Anniversary BBC Radio 2 Folkshow, followed by a trip to the Costa del Folk Festival on Ibiza and summer festival appearances which included main stage slots at the Sidmouth Festival and Friday headliners at FolkEast.

Their first full length album, Glamour In The Grey, was released in November 2022 and has enjoyed an unbroken run of fourteen months in the UK Official Folk Chart where it debuted at number 9 and was punningly compared by Mojo magazine to the first ever album of the folk/rock genre in 1969 from Fairport Convention as being “Liege and Lief affirming” and also “an elemental racket”. The start of 2024 sees them heading out on a UK tour starting with a headline show in Glasgow as part of the Celtic Connections Festival on the 30th of January, and a 10-date sweep round England which includes their own one day festival, the Indoor Festival of Folk, at Cecil Sharp House in London on Saturday the 3rd of February featuring Tom Robinson, The Trials of Cato, the Rosie Hood Band, Janice Burns and Jon Doran and a very special interview session where Folk On Foot podcaster Matthew Bannister will be talking to the co-creators of the classic UK Folk/Rock genre producer/manager Joe Boyd and producer John Wood (Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Richard and Linda Thompson, the Incredible String Band John Martyn and Nick Drake).

“The possibilities The Magpie Arc offer are very enticing indeed. You owe it to yourself to catch this band as soon as you can. Capability, flair and originality rarely come so well wrapped.” (Spiral Earth) “Everyone in the band brings their own talents but the synergy makes them much more than the sum of their parts. It takes “folk-rock” to a new and exciting level.” (Fatea Magazine) S ign-up here for email updates on music and live gigs near you.

You Don't Wanna Miss These Amazing Vintage Photos of Aerosmith in the '70s and Beyond

The rockers have been living it up for decades — see some throwback photos from their first years on tour together

Aerosmith is going back on tour.

The iconic rock group — originally made up of Steven Tyler ,  Joe Perry , Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer —  has been on the scene since 1970 , linking up in Boston and going on to worldwide fame.

And though many of today's fans know them thanks to Tyler's own star power (or maybe the movie Armageddon ), the band has been making major headlines since those early days.

Here, check out some incredible '70s- and '80s-era photos of Aerosmith in their early days.

  • "Waiting a Lifetime"

The new album from Lo Moon , I Wish You Way More Than Luck , takes its title from a somewhat well-known quote by the writer David Foster Wallace. It was said to outgoing graduates, in a commencement speech. It's fitting, because Lo Moon's Matt Lowell returned to his old campus in Connecticut to get inspired by the place he first performed as a musician, Clark Memorial Chapel. It was the spark that put I Wish You Way More Than Luck into action.

In this mini-concert, the psychedelic pop band out of Los Angeles joins World Cafe for a performance recorded in London at The Lexington in 2023. Enjoy.

This episode of World Cafe was produced and edited by Will Loftus. The web story was created by Miguel Perez. Our senior producer is Kimberly Junod. Our engineer is Chris Williams. Our programming and booking coordinator is Chelsea Johnson.

More: Aerosmith Peace Out: See the setlist for the iconic band's farewell tour

Why did Aerosmith postpone their farewell tour?

After playing only a handful of concerts in September, the “Walk This Way” heroes had to hit pause after singer Steven Tyler damaged his vocal cords. He also fractured his larynx and was given doctor’s orders not to sing for 30 days.

But Aerosmith opted to give Tyler ample time to recuperate and scuttle all of their shows until 2024.

The wiry frontman known for his searing rock yowls, said at the time that the injury occurred at a Sept. 10 show in New York and that the vocal cord damage “led to subsequent bleeding.”

What songs can fans expect to hear at Aerosmith’s farewell shows?

USA TODAY was there for opening night of the Peace Out tour Sept. 3 in Philadelphia. As the tour is also a celebration of the band’s 50 years in the music industry, the setlist reflected their vast catalog.

The band – Tyler, guitarist Joe Perry, bassist Tom Hamilton and guitarist Brad Whitford, along with drummer John Douglas filling in for Joey Kramer – sounded in peak form for their deserved victory lap.

Songs ranged from singalong rock smashes “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Rag Doll” to the rarely played album track “Adam’s Apple” and a dip into Aerosmith’s blues roots with “Hangman Jury.”

The Battle Over Classic Rock Band the Guess Who Just Went Nuclear

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

For the past six months, Burton Cummings, founding singer and songwriter of classic rock group the Guess Who , has been in a bitter legal dispute to wrest control of his old band’s legacy. Now he’s adopting an aggressive and relatively unheard of approach to make that happen: giving up on certain royalties so the band can’t play his songs.

As Rolling Stone previously reported , Cummings and original Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman sued the current iteration of the Guess Who (as well as the band’s original drummer and bass player Garry Peterson and Jim Kale) last October, alleging that the group that currently holds the Guess Who trademark is “a cover band” using the original group’s recording in ads “in an effort to boost the Cover Band’s ticket sales for live performances and to give the false impression that Plaintiffs are performing.”

“I’m willing to do anything to stop the fake band; they’re taking [Bachman and my] life story and pretending it’s theirs,” Cummings tells Rolling Stone. “They’re not the people who made these records, and they shouldn’t act like they did. This doesn’t stop this cover band from playing their shows, it just stops them from playing the songs I wrote. If the songs are performed by the fake Guess Who, they will be sued for every occurrence.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“Not a lot of artists are both the writer and the publisher on their songs, and Burton Cummings fortunately is, so this is a very rare case where the artist can take this action,” Yu says. “And I think this situation shows the direct nexus between their false advertising and who they say they are.”

The move is focused on agreements set through groups called performing rights organizations (PROs). The termination targets all the venues the band would play. Almost every concert venue in the country has blanket agreements with various PROs such as BMI and ASCAP, who collect royalties on behalf of songwriters for the public performances of their works. If a venue has licensing agreements in place, the venues’ artists are free to cover any song from the PROs’ repertory.

By Thursday morning, the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville, the Saenger Theatre in Mobile, Alabama, and the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, Florida — who would’ve hosted the Guess Who’s next three shows — announced cancellations as well. Tickets for shows beyond those dates remain on sale as of this article’s publication.

An attorney for the Guess Who didn’t respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment regarding the shows. In December, the band took to social media calling Cummings’ and Bachman’s suit “meritless.” In a memorandum, the band argued that “there is no dispute that Defendants lawfully own ‘The Guess Who’ trademark,” and that Consumers who see an ad for a concert by the Guess Who would not reasonably assume that Bachman and Cummings are performing merely because they were in the band many years ago.”

Assuming the group does play the classic-era songs at their upcoming shows, both the band and the venue they played at could be on the hook for legal recourse, Cummings and his team tell Rolling Stone .

But like most nuclear options, Cummings’ strategy doesn’t come without the risk of some mutually assured destruction. While terminating the rights complicates the current Guess Who’s performances, it may also significantly hit Cummings’ own earnings. Aside from working with concert venues, PROs also collect royalties from when songs are played on the radio, on TV shows, or even when they’re played in the background at restaurants or shopping malls. With the license terminated, Cummings will likely lose out on seeing those royalty payments. And that’s not just on the versions he recorded, but on covers such as Lenny Kravitz’s Grammy-winning “American Woman” cover.

The termination is the latest development in a decadeslong dispute that bubbled over with last year’s lawsuit . The fight began when the band’s original bassist, Jim Kale, obtained the trademark to the Guess Who name in 1986, as the band hadn’t secured the trademark before then . From then on, Kale had organized several tours using the Guess Who name featuring a heavily rotating lineup.

By the late 1980s, the Guess Who’s original drummer, Garry Peterson, joined the band as well. Kale retired in 2016, leaving Peterson as the only original member left. But he doesn’t play every show, Bachman and Cummings alleged, meaning some shows feature no original members of their band.

Since Cummings filed the suit, he says that the band had removed his access to the Guess Who’s Spotify for Artists page. (When the suit filed last fall, the band’s Spotify page showed a picture of the current Guess Who lineup, but as of publication, it’s now a picture of the old band.)

Cummings also tells Rolling Stone that within the past month, the band’s lawyers said they’d “sue me if I ever even say I was ever in the Guess Who.” “You know how ridiculous this is? What next, can I not say I was born and raised in Winnipeg? That I’m Canadian?”

“How much is my life’s work worth? You can’t put it in dollars and cents,” he says. “It’s wrong what they’ve done and for years, nobody did anything about it. But we’re doing something now, and this may set some precedents because there are other acts out there that aren’t real either.
