⭐ BEST TORREMOLINOS TO GIBRALTAR TOUR

  • 9.5 hour tour
  • Includes transportation and guide
  • Free time to explore Gibraltar

If you’re wondering how to take a day trip to Gibraltar from Torremolinos, here are your main options:

  • Renting a car and driving to Gibraltar
  • Getting the bus to Gibraltar
  • Booking a tour to Gibraltar

Option 1: Driving to Gibraltar

It’s the most convenient option as you don’t need to rely on the bus times, and you can visit Gibraltar at your own pace.

The car journey is 1 hour and 30 minutes if you drive via the toll road. If you don’t want to pay tolls, it’ll take 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Regardless of the type of road you take, both are well-maintained and aren’t complicated to drive on.

If you visit Gibraltar in summer, be aware that there are usually long queues at Gibraltar’s border. The earlier you arrive, the better. Also, avoid weekends if possible.

When it comes to parking in Gibraltar, the truth is that it’s better to park your car at La Linea de La Concepción . This way, you can avoid the long queues to enter Gibraltar by car.

If you decide to park inside, it isn’t easy to find a free car park, so if you don’t want to waste time trying to find a spot, you can head to the Mid-Town Car Park. It’s one of the cheapest, costing £1.80 per hour from 7:45 am to 7 pm and £0.80 per hour outside those hours.

Check out rental cars at Malaga Airport here

Option 2: Getting the bus to Gibraltar

Is it possible to travel from Torremolinos to Gibraltar by bus? Yes, but it’s the longest way to get there.

First, you need to go to Torremolinos coach station, where you can take the ALSA bus (Co-Ma-Alg) towards Algeciras.

The bus takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes and stops at other Costa del Sol towns, such as Fuengirola and Estepona.

Once in La Linea de la Concepcion, the Spanish town next to Gibraltar, you must walk 10 minutes to reach passport control.

It will take you approximately 20 minutes from passport control to the centre of Gibraltar.

Please note that you might need to take another bus different from what you take first to arrive in Gibraltar.

This is because buses aren’t very regular. On the way back, you can take the Avanza L-611 that leaves you at Malaga Airport.

You can take a taxi or the C-1 train from Malaga airport to Torremolinos .

Book your bus tickets here

Option 3: Booking a tour of Gibraltar

Last but not least, you have the option to book a day tour to Gibraltar.

This is a good idea for a few reasons: firstly, you don’t need to worry about sorting out transport and attractions as most tours include this, and secondly, you get the knowledge and tips from an experienced guide.

This Gibraltar tour from Malaga and Costa del Sol lasts 9.5 hours and provides transportation, a bilingual guide, Nature Reserve entry tickets and free time in Gibraltar.

There are several meeting points, including Malaga to Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Marbella.

I found this day trip to Gibraltar from Torremolinos perfect for discovering Gibraltar’s main attractions.

Things to do in Gibraltar on a day trip from Torremolinos

1. visit top of the rock and upper nature reserve.

apes den in top of the rock, gibraltar

When anyone thinks of Gibraltar, the first thing that comes to mind is Top of the Rock (and the monkeys!)

There’s no visit to Gibraltar without going to the top of the Rock and exploring its beautiful natural surroundings.

You have three ways to access it: 1) cable car (the most convenient option), 2) group tour, 3) on foot.

My preferred option is taking the cable car because it’s quick, affordable, and you can discover Top of the Rock at your own pace.

I would avoid group tours because they tend to be more expensive, and you’ll spend a lot of your time in a 4×4 and only stop at certain spots.

The Top of the Rock has breathtaking views, and you can see three countries in one from here: Gibraltar, Spain and Africa.

Regarding the Upper Nature Reserve, you can spend a lot of time exploring its different attractions.

Cross the Suspension Bridge, walk on the skyline, see the monkeys being fed and visit St. Michael’s Cave, among other things.

2. Do some shopping at Main Street

gibraltar main square

One of the most popular activities to do in Gibraltar is shopping.

Did you know that most products are tax-free? This means you’ll be able to purchase many products for less than in other countries, including Spain.

There are many shops in Gibraltar, and you can find British high-street brands, such as M&S and Holland and Barrett.

It’s a paradise for shopaholics! But you must know there’s a limit to the number of things you can take outside the country. You’ll have to declare customs at the border.

3. Go to The Alameda Botanic Gardens

A street in Gibraltar

Gibraltar Botanic Gardens are worth visiting – from seeing beautiful flowers and plants from different parts of the world to visiting the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park.

The latter has a wide variety of animals. You can see macaques, lemurs, tortoises, iguanas and other interesting species. The park’s mission is to protect the local wildlife.

In addition to these activities, you can take a guided tour of the botanic gardens to learn about the plant species and this location.

Important to know : The Botanic Gardens are free; however, if you want to visit the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park, you must pay an entry fee of 7 pounds per adult and 4 pounds per child.

4. Spend time at the beach

Gibraltar rock

If you visit Gibraltar in summer, it’s always a good idea to cool yourself down by swimming in the sea.

Gibraltar is home to a few beautiful beaches to spend some time on. Plus, it’s very close to the beaches of La Linea, the Spanish town next to Gibraltar.

One of my favourite beaches in Catalan Bay, and apart from the beach, I also recommend the neighbourhood, home to colourful buildings and a church.

And if you’re up for an adventure, you can do popular water sports in Gibraltar, like scuba diving and stand-up paddleboarding.

5. Go on a dolphin-watching tour

Another popular activity in Gibraltar is dolphin watching . This 75-minute tour sails through the Spanish and African coastline and includes live commentary from which you can learn more about the three different types of dolphins that live in the area.

Enjoy the cruise while spotting regular, striped and bottlenose dolphins.

Book this highly-rated dolphin-watching tour

Other activities you might want to add to your itinerary

Rock of Gibraltar History Tour . Learn all about the history of the Rock of Gibraltar in a 2.5 hours guided tour. The tour includes transport to the rock and entrance to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve

Dolphin Watch Cruise & Cable Car Fast Track Combo . Enjoy a boat ride where you can spot dolphins and other sea life, such as turtles and flying fish, and then take the Gibraltar cable car to access the Rock of Gibraltar and see the Barbary Macaques!

How to prepare yourself for a Gibraltar day trip from Torremolinos

a photo of Gibraltar steps

  • Make sure you take your passport with you . It needs to be valid for more than 6 months.
  • If you come to Gibraltar by car, consider parking outside Gibraltar because it isn’t easy to find a parking slot. You can find car parks in La Linea and walk to Gibraltar. This way, you’ll avoid big car queues at the control border.
  • Buy Gibraltar pass to save money on attractions and transportation. The pass includes access to The Nature Reserve, St. Michael’s Cave, The Moorish Castle, Europa Point, and other top sights in Gibraltar.
  • Don’t take much with you to the Top of the Rock . Some monkeys will try to get your stuff. Watch out for your belongings.
  • Don’t feed the monkeys . There are signs across the Upper Nature Reserve about it, but it’s good to remember because otherwise, you can be fined.

Staying in Gibraltar for more than a day? Then, you might want to explore beyond the country and visit nearby Spanish towns.

These are some beautiful towns to consider exploring:

Tarifa . It’s known as Spain’s surfing capital, but not only can you surf in Tarifa but explore its picturesque and laid-back vibe old town. Tarifa is only a 30 minute drive from Gibraltar.

Estepona . If you love discovering whitewashed towns, head to Estepona. It’s considered the Garden of Costa del Sol, and there’s nothing better than wandering its historic centre with cobblestone streets, beautiful flower pots hanging on the walls and locals’ balconies and attractions, like the Orchidarium.

Day Trip From Torremolinos To Gibraltar: Practical Tips [2024]

If you’re looking for an easy and convenient way to book a day trip from Torremolinos to Gibraltar, you came to the right place!

I have visited Gibraltar myself, and as I live on Costa del Sol, I am able to share lots of local insights and tips that will make your trip options much more convenient and save you a lot of time and hassle.

BOOK ONLINE :

Day trip from torremolinos to gibraltar travel options.

Torremolinos is well connected with the rest of Costa del Sol with a train and bus network, but by far the most convenient travel option is local tour company.

Here is a list of all your options with full details for each below.

  • Day trip from Torremolinos to Gibraltar with local tour company
  • Rent a car and travel on your own (see notes re parking)
  • Using public transport (not recommended)

1. Day Trip from Torremolinos to Gibraltar with Local Tour Company

Using a local tour company is the easiest and most cost-effective option to see Gibraltar on a day trip from Torremolinos.

Click this link to choose your dates, add a number of passengers, and book in a few steps online.

This day trip comes with a FREE cancellation policy for up to 24 hours, and you can book the trip now and pay later (how great is that!).

Using a tour company has a number of benefits. In this case, its much better value for money compared to renting a car, no need to navigate the local traffic, and you also get insights about Gibraltar from the English-speaking guide on board an air-conditioned bus with wifi.

This day trip has a basic fee which includes transport to and from Gibraltar, but also an upgrade option to book the tour of the Nature Reserve, for an extra charge.

Simply select which one you prefer when you book using the link above.

2. Day Trip to Gibraltar with Rental Car

If you already rented a car or planning to do so, you can also drive to Gibraltar on your own, but there are a few things you should keep in mind.

While the drive itself is not too difficult, around 1.5 hours via the main highways, there are road tolls to pay on your way, on top of petrol and the cost of the car rental.

It is also highly recommended to leave the car at La Linea parking lot to save a lot of time waiting for passport control and crossing on foot.

The car lines to cross the borders are notoriously long, and you can end up waiting for an hour just to cross the borders. Cars drive on the right inside Gibraltar, unlike the UK.

It might end up costing you a lot more than booking a day trip with a tour operator, plus the added hassle of finding parking and paying the extra fees.

Gibraltar old town

3. Day Trip to Gibraltar with Public Transport

The public transport options to Gibraltar from Torremolinos are fairly limited, your best bet would be getting a train or bus to Malaga, and then taking a bus from there.

There are up to 7 connections per day, with the shortest journey around 1.5 hours but can go up to over 2 hours.

With the added travel time to Malaga and change, I think this is too much time spent traveling for a single-day trip.

You also have to consider that the bus can’t cross the borders of Gibraltar, so you will have to get to La Linea bus station and walk to the border crossing from there.

From the border crossing, you can walk to Gibraltar on foot via the airport runway crossing, or take a local Gibraltar taxi to the town.

While it’s certainly an option, the daily connections are pretty limited and you will have to pick the shorter travel time buses so you have plenty of time to explore Gibraltar.

Essential Info For Your Day Trip From Torremolinos to Gibraltar

A trip to Gibraltar comes with a few unique rules that you should know about and check before you book your trip.

  • It is your responsibility to check the entry requirements to the country, especially if you’re from a non-EU country.
  • Gibraltar was annexed to the UK by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, following the end of the war. It is considered a British territory abroad, most often referred to locally as ‘the Rock’ (no, not the actor).
  • As a British territory, the same rules will apply as if you’re visiting the UK. These rules have changed a little since the UK left the EU.
  • Before you plan your trip, please make sure that you check the legal requirements for entry to this UK territory on the  official Gibraltar government website , where you will get advice for every nationality
  • As of spring 2023, you can enter Gibraltar with a valid EU passport without any additional paperwork, or even a valid national ID card (EU citizens only).
  • If you’re not from the EU, VISA requirements may apply – check the link above for more details
  • There are some restrictions on how much good you can bring to Spain from Gibraltar and another way around, you can check the  HM Customs page which has more details . The customs check is both on entry to Gibraltar and also exit.
  • Following the border crossing and passport control, you will have to cross the airport runway to get to Gibraltar town – sometimes a wait is necessary if a plane is scheduled to land or depart.

Gibraltar Day Trip From Torremolinos

A popular day trip from Torremolinos is visiting the famous Rock of Gibraltar! A British Territory offering a choice of guided tours, tax free shopping, plus the opportunity to get up close and personal with the famous monkeys!

Discover the Famous Rock of Gibraltar!

Gibraltar is easily accessible from Torremolinos  by road, with a driving distance of around 123 kilometers (about 76 miles). Alternatively, there are bus services and private transport companies which offer their services for return trips to Gibraltar. The bus/coach service stops at La Linea, just across the border from Gibraltar. Click here to view bus times and prices.

If driving to Gibraltar, it's advised to park on the Spanish side and walk across the border. This will help to avoid any long queues. Don't forget your passport too!

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. Its iconic Rock of Gibraltar is a major landmark and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

Rich History

Gibraltar has a rich history, dating all the way back to the Neanderthals through to Ancient Greece, Roman times, 18th Century ship battles and even World War II! It has been strategically important throughout history and has been ruled by various powers, including the Moors, Spanish, and British.

Visit the Famous Gibraltar Attractions

The Rock itself is a major attraction. Visitors can take a cable car ride to the top, where they can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area and even see across the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa on a clear day.

The easiest way to see the attractions in Gibraltar, especially the caves, monkeys, views from the top, tunnels and castle - is by booking your own private tour. This way you can enjoy a Gibraltarian official tour guide to explain the history of Gibraltar, to drive you to all of the sites (to avoid lots of difficult uphill walking) - all with a luxury vehicle with air conditioning in comfort and style.

Gibraltar is home to a unique population of Barbary macaques, the only wild monkeys in Europe. Visitors can see these fascinating creatures up close in their natural habitat. Tour guides are particularly experienced in ensuring your interaction with the monkeys is a safe one for a special photo opportunity.

Gibraltar is also a popular destination for duty-free shopping, with a wide range of goods available at lower prices compared to neighboring Spain.

  • VoyagesMarioTours 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Elena was fantastic. We did 4 different tours and activities with Julia Travel. From Torremolinos, we went a the sale office and Elena was there to help us, she was very good on recommendations, she was able to book us private tour just for our group, she went out of expectation to make sure to offer us the best tour possible, with our limited time available. She told us about the different options. Some tours we decide to go with the less expensive, but we knew about all the pick up at the other hotels. Some tours we choose private to save time on our way there. Overall, we were very pleased with the company, specially with Elena. Read more Written February 28, 2024
  • C3545VBdianec 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Too much time on the bus It took a really long time to pick everyone up from their hotels (not everyone was on time). Its a long time in the bus to and from Malaga. There was a lot of waiting around in Gibralta due to logistical issues. Our local guide in Gibralta fed the Monkeys and had them climb all over him after he told us not to feed or touch them. Read more Written February 27, 2024
  • Ian W 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Train ride from hell We have used city bud tours in many cities on our trips and found them very informative and worthwhile. This bud tour was the worst we have ever been on. The train itself is small and very tough and jerky, you are down low in the train and can not see sights at all. The narration was terrible. Either there is nothing to talk about Granada or they did a poor job. We listened to the song Blue Bayou for half the trip, absolutely awful. We had numerous stops where you just sat there for 3-5 minutes at a time listening to the song. I would highly recommend you stay off this train. It was , as we called it “ the train from hell” Read more Written February 26, 2024
  • twmtl2014 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Worth going to see I booked this trip on TripAdvisor. Very easy to do. Did have to call the tour operator to confirm my reservations which was a little odd as when I called the person answering had no idea what I was talking about. I hung up then got an email to confirm the trip. Called agai. As the meeting spot was not very clear. That peeps. Was helpful I. Getting me the right directions. Once we made it to the pick up spot. A very nice coach bus came the woman stood outside the bus. A couple of people went up to her but no one got on the bus. I finally had to go up and ask if she was with a tour company. She only gave my last name told me she has been waiting. I said well so haven’t I. Might help if you call the last name out as others were waiting. For their tour bus also. Annabelle the tour guide once settled in was very good. Spoke ma y many different languages which was impressive. Hold of down a little better job on explaining what was happening but in fairness she was doing the same message four times. Joaquin the bus driver was amazing. He took those narrow roads like a champ. Angel our small tour bus guide was funny amusing and knowledgeable. He kept a smile on our face all day. The rock st Michael’s and the monkeys were awesome. Well worth the trip. Enjoyed it immensely though Read more Written February 25, 2024
  • Dave N 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Interesting Rock The tour on Gibraltar was great with a dedicated English tour guide/mini bus driver who was informative and funny, and the caves were great to see. The bus from Malaga to Gibraltar took 3 hours as there were many stops to pick people up and the return trip took 2.5 hours. More time travelling than spent at Gibraltar which was surprising. Would also have been good having some commentary on the drive to and from Malaga though the staff member on these parts of the trip was translating info into 4 languages. • Jackiegh 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Rattle trap tour of the city center. This bus runs a loop around the city center. We used it to get an overview of the city on a rainy afternoon. It served this purpose. However, it was a rattle trap, with poor narration, leaky doors/windows, and a not very friendly driver. It was a rough ride over the stone pavers, so it would be torture to anyone with a bad back. That being said- we would probably do it again if we have a rainy day and didn’t want to stay in the hotel room. There is so much room for improvement, though. Read more Written February 16, 2024
  • b0bif 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Tour worth visiting Great tour, it was a bit crowded, both the bus picking up the passengers from Costa del sol, as well as the mini bus for the rock tour. But we saw all the tourist attractions (Europa point, St. Michael’s cave and the apes den). With the tour bus you pass both borders much faster and hassle free. Well worth visiting Read more Written February 12, 2024

  • T8247VMmarkl 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Whistle stop Alhambra tour! This is an amazing place to visit and so glad we did. The guide at the Alhambra was very informative and engaging. However the time at the palace felt rushed and you need much more than 2 and half hours to do it justice. I would have preferred less than 4hrs in Granada and more time at the actual attraction. What to expect

An exotic blend of the familiar and the unusual, Gibraltar is a must-visit. This tour ticks off all its top attractions – the Barbary apes of the Rock, St Michael's Caves and the Main Street. Rosa, one of our local guides, says: ‘Gibraltar is one of the most unexpected culture shocks I've ever encountered. It feels like my native Andalusia, but everything looks British. Wandering around, listening to the locals chat in their cute dialect is always a joy.'

The fun kicks off on a high with a guided tour of the Rock of Gibraltar. Towering 426 metres above the Med, its steep slopes look daunting – but you'll be discovering it from the comfort of a minibus. The first stop is packed-with-monuments Europa Point, a popular spot for taking snaps. At the Upper Rock nature reserve, you'll meet the free-roaming Barbary apes – Europe's only wild monkeys. On a clear day, you can see all the way across to Africa. Next up is St Michael's Cave. Once home to Neanderthals and used as a war hospital during World War II, they're now an atmospheric concert hall.

Back at ground level, Gibraltar's town centre has a distinctly British feel to it, whether it's the more obvious red phone and post boxes or the more succinct ones such as arched Georgian door frames. Tuck into a pie or maybe some fish and chips for lunch, before some retail therapy. Main Street, where many of the British high street chains have outlets, is famed for its duty-free shops.

Plus, you'll also visit the Rock's recently renovated St Michael's Cave, which now hosts an auditorium. At the Upper Rock nature reserve, you'll meet the free-roaming Barbary apes – Europe's only wild monkeys. There are about 300 monkeys on the Rock. A local legend says that if the monkeys disappear, Gibraltar will stop being British. Back at ground level, Gibraltar's town centre has a distinctly British feel to it. Head to Main Street, where many of the British high street chains have outlets, for a mooch around its duty-free shops.

Andalusia Tour with El Torcal, Antequera and lunch

Andalusia Tour with El Torcal, Antequera and lunch

This tour is a scenery-rich journey through some often-overlooked corners of inland Andalusia. You'll visit historic Antequera, immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of El Torcal and the Guadalhorce lakes, and round off the day at Juanito's orange farm. Sonia, one of our guides, says, ‘You'll pass through miles of stunning, varied and unspoilt scenery. It's a rare chance to try local food and wine in a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere.'First up is the UNESCO-listed nature reserve of El Torcal. Here, you can stroll about its gnarled and otherworldly karst rock formations, which date back to the Jurassic age. Next, we'll stop to enjoy panoramic vistas of the Antequera's Moorish fortress and Lovers' Rock – a mountain steeped in local legend. The city has been dubbed the ‘Florence of Andalusia' because of its Renaissance and baroque palaces and churches. Free time to explore the old town is followed by lunch made from locally sourced seasonal ingredients, washed down with regional wine, in a family-run restaurant. In the afternoon, we'll head to the jade-green waters of the Guadalhorce reservoirs. But the best is yet to come, with a visit to the citrus farm of the larger-than-life Juanito. He'll proudly show you around his groves and offer you his tangy fruits. ‘Juanito is a true character who'll give you insights into local farming methods and let you taste his freshly squeezed orange juice and homemade orange cake,' Sonia adds.

The Gaitanes Gorge is the must-see natural attraction in inland Malaga. After a scenic drive through the country, we'll stop off at a typical village for some free time to wander around its narrow, whitewashed-fringed streets. Then, don your walking boots as we set off on an 8km walk along the recently reopened Caminito del Rey, or King's Walkway.Departing from the pine-fringed reservoirs, you'll trek along a spectacular walkway pinned along the steep gorge walls. Your guide will give you an insight into its geological origins and fascinating historical past. Finally, at the end of the journey, you'll have a well-earned break in El Chorro for the chance to grab a spot of lunch.

Full Day Tour to Ronda with Reservatauro Ranch Visit

Full Day Tour to Ronda with Reservatauro Ranch Visit

Heading into the hills from the Costa del Sol, you'll come across one of the most storied medieval towns in the region – the one and only Ronda. Spend the whole day exploring its cobbled alleys and discover its history and local traditions, including a visit to a bull ranch. Marilo, one of our expert local guides, says ‘Ronda's famous bridge is still known as Puente Nuevo, even though construction began over 250 years ago. It joins the two parts of Ronda – the new town, “Mercadillo”, and the old town, “La Ciudad”.'After arrival, you'll set off on a guided walk around the town, checking out its churches, mansions and the Puente Nuevo. This magnificent stone bridge straddles the 100-metre-deep Tajo gorge that bisects the town, serving up dizzying views. Ernest Hemingway was a frequent visitor – so much so, there's a sculpture of him, opposite one of Orson Welles, another Ronda aficionado – in Blas Infante park. Then, you'll enjoy more views over the ravine from the Casa Don Bosco, a modernist mansion perched above the gorge, as well as a glass of wine. You'll round off at the Reservatauro Ranch – set in a biosphere reserve filled with centuries-old oak trees, it's a perfect habitat for breeding Spanish bulls and Andalusian horses. Learn more about the history of Spanish bulls and Andalusian horses, in a sustainable and eco-friendly way. You'll stroll through wooded pasturelands studded with oaks and get to meet these lovingly cared-for animals, which are free to roam the vast ranch.
