Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, is a world-renowned ethologist and activist inspiring greater understanding and action on behalf of the natural world. Dr. Goodall is known for groundbreaking studies of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, transformative research which continues today as the longest running wild chimpanzee study in the world.
At 26, Jane followed her passion for wildlife and Africa to Gombe, Tanzania. There, under the mentorship of paleoanthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey, she began her landmark study of wild chimpanzees. Her revelatory observation that chimpanzees make and use tools rocked the scientific landscape and forever redefined our understanding of the relationship between humans and other animals.
Jane’s work builds on innovative science, growing a lifetime of advocacy particularly through her global organization the Jane Goodall Institute, founded in 1977. Her trailblazing efforts advance community-led conservation through JGI’s Tacare approach which empowers local communities to own the process of sustainable development and conservation, and through Roots & Shoots, JGI’s international youth program which supports young people in more than 60 countries to create positive change in their communities.
Today, Jane continues to connect with worldwide audiences, despite the challenges of the pandemic, through ‘Virtual Jane’ including remote lectures, recordings, and her podcast, the “Jane Goodall Hopecast.” In 2021, Jane was the recipient of the Templeton Prize, and published her newest book, “The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times . ”

Step into Jane Goodall's shoes at an interactive exhibition at the Natural History Museum of Utah
The exhibit, about the life and work of the woman who spent decades studying chimpanzees, is free with admission to the museum and will be on display through may 27, 2024.
By Kaigan Mears Bigler
The jungle sounds of cooing chimpanzees and a breeze swaying through trees greets patrons as they walk into the Natural History Museum of Utah's new exhibit, "Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall."
The sights and sounds of Goodall's life decorate the exhibit, from her favorite childhood stuffed toy chimpanzee up to a replica of the tree-canopied tent she lived in during her years spent among a chimpanzee community. Hands-on videos and displays friendly to all ages carry patrons through a timeline of her life and work.
Her whole life, Goodall knew she wanted to spend her time with humankind's closest living relative, the chimpanzee. She worked as a waitress at a hotel to save her money, eventually earning enough to take a boat to Kenya — a trip that would forever change our understanding of our close cousins.
The Natural History Museum of Utah has been planning this exhibit for years, excited to help Utah understand Goodall's impact on the way scientists interact with chimp communities in what is now Gombe National Park in Tanzania.
Goodall became famous for the knowledge she brought to the scientific community about chimpanzees — her observations helped us understand just how much like humans chimpanzees are, especially in their use of tools, which was originally thought only to be a human trait. She is most recently well known for her activism in advocating for protection of forests and ape habitats.
Rachna Reddy, a keynote speaker at the opening celebration of the exhibit on Saturday, said Goodall is "one of the most iconic figures of drawing women into science ... in a context where there's a lot to be afraid of."
Reddy's work is greatly inspired by Goodall, starting when she was invited to observe chimpanzees in Uganda at just 19 years old. Now 33 and an assistant professor of biological anthropology at the University of Utah, she considers Ngogo Kibale National Park a home away from home, where she spends a few months every year with a chimp community.
"I hope (the exhibit) is an inspiration to be curious about the world around (us), and to value not just other people, but other animals as individuals and ... ways we can coexist," Reddy said.
While one family member can be watching a a hologram-like Goodall share her memories of arriving in Tanzania, another family member can be learning how to speak like a chimpanzee by listening and howling with a chimp through a screen.
Original letters, notes and journals penned by Goodall are also on display throughout.
There are various attractions related to the "Becoming Jane" exhibit throughout the museum, teaching about the relation and evolution from early man and monkey to today.
The "Becoming Jane" exhibit is free with admission to the Natural History Museum of Utah and will be on display through May 27, 2024. For more information about the exhibit, visit the museum's website .

NHMU to Open “Becoming Jane” an Immersive Multimedia Exhibition on the Legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall
SALT LAKE CITY—Nov. 28, 2023— Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace—has created an indelible legacy in the fields of science and conservation—a legacy celebrated in “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall,” a new exhibition opening at the Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) on December 7, 2023. Produced in partnership with the National Geographic Society and the Jane Goodall Institute, the exhibition explores Dr. Goodall’s life from her early years as an intrepid young woman with a dream to learn about animals in Africa, to her years establishing herself as a renowned scientist in Gombe, Tanzania to her present role as an activist, mentor and advocate for creating a better world for all life on Earth. “Becoming Jane” will remain open at NHMU until May 27, 2024.
Widely known for her innovative approach to animal behavior research, Dr. Goodall traveled to what is now Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park and immersed herself in observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Her work studying the lives of chimpanzees in the wild captured the imagination of the world. Rather than seeing the animals as subjects, she came to know them as individuals with personalities and emotions—a notion once rejected by the scientific world, yet now considered revolutionary. Her story—one of fearless determination, curiosity, the pursuit of knowledge and a passionate love of the natural world—has resonated with generations of people around the globe.
“Jane Goodall has been inspiring National Geographic audiences, young and old, for over half a century,” said Anthony Luckett, vice president of business development at the National Geographic Society. “This exhibition allows us to experience her amazing life story in a highly personal and powerful way. Through immersive media, authentic scenic and interactives, this exhibition takes visitors into the field and around the world with Jane, walking in her shoes and experiencing her powerful message of hope firsthand.”
“We are thrilled to welcome ‘Becoming Jane’ to NHMU and offer our visitors the opportunity to understand and appreciate Dr. Jane Goodall, a pioneering icon of science,” said Dr. Jason Cryan, The Sarah B. George Executive Director. “NHMU is inspired by Dr. Goodall’s life and work, which affirms that science is ever evolving, and conservation is the key to preserving our natural world. We are grateful for the tremendous strides Dr. Goodall has made in understanding our closest living relatives and are excited for visitors to learn about Dr. Goodall’s innovative research techniques and explore her passion for nature.”
Highlights from the exhibition include:
- A multiscreen experience where visitors are introduced to Dr. Goodall’s extraordinary work, alongside surprising encounters with virtually rendered chimpanzees.
- A replica of Dr. Goodall’s research tent where, in a hands-on experience, visitors can envision themselves as scientists jotting down observations in their field journal.
- A hologram-like projection of Dr. Goodall who shares her memories in Gombe and recalls her thoughts, feelings, impressions and lessons learned while living among chimpanzees.
- An immersive projection of Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park
- Interactive augmented reality (AR) activities, including one in which visitors can test their skills at matching the pant-hoot vocalization of a chimpanzee.
- Updates on the current state of Gombe Stream National Park and the chimpanzee range in Africa, along with the work of the innovative scientists and conservationists who are following in Dr. Goodall’s footsteps.
- A call to action to visitors from Dr. Goodall to join her, the Jane Goodall Institute and National Geographic in an effort to ensure a more sustainable future for us all.
- A pledge station where visitors can share what actions they will take to help Dr. Goodall in her mission.
Join NHMU on December 9, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the opening celebration of “Becoming Jane”. The opening celebration will include an activity zone with face painting and a community art project; hourly presentations by HawkWatch International; the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art truck featuring What Sustains? by Nina Elder; and a keynote lecture from biological anthropologist and primatologist Rachna Reddy entitled Coming of Age in Chimpanzees .
In its commitment to bringing visitors the most up-to-date scientific knowledge, NHMU is continually updating exhibits to reflect new discoveries. NHMU has added a new permanent exhibition: Climate of Hope , which tells the story of how we can build a thriving future in a world with a changing climate through hands-on interactives, immersive environments and captivating photos.
In addition to a new permanent exhibit, NHMU has also recently updated its ‘Life Gallery’ with a new exhibit sharing groundbreaking information about ribosomes, the structures that create proteins – essential building blocks of life – and a substantial update to the ‘Hominid wall’, adding new information about our early ancestors.
Don't miss your chance to visit Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall at NHMU from December 9, 2023, to May 27, 2024. About Dr. Jane Goodall
Jane Goodall was born on April 3, 1934 in London, England. At the young age of 26, she followed her passion for animals and Africa to Gombe, Tanzania, where she began her landmark study of chimpanzees in the wild—immersing herself in their habitat as a neighbor rather than a distant observer. Her discovery in 1960 that chimpanzees make and use tools rocked the scientific world and redefined the relationship between humans and animals. In 1977, she established the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) to advance her work around the world and for generations to come. JGI continues the field research at Gombe and builds on Dr. Goodall’s innovative approach to conservation, which recognizes the central role that people play in the well-being of animals and the environment. In 1991, she founded Roots & Shoots, a global program that connects young people in more than 60 countries to be conservation activists in their daily lives. Today, Dr. Goodall travels the world, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees, other environmental crises, and her reasons for hope. In her books and speeches, she emphasizes the interconnectedness of all living things and the collective power of individual action.

A Conversation With…
Jane Goodall Is More of a Dog Person, Actually
Dr. Goodall, who is best known for her work with chimpanzees, recently celebrated her forthcoming 90th birthday with as many dogs and explained why she isn’t slowing down.
By Darren Incorvaia
Darren Incorvaia interviewed Dr. Goodall in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif., after attending the pup-filled beach gathering in her honor.
Jane Goodall is turning 90 on April 3 and the primatologist-turned-activist seems busier than ever. This year, she’ll be on the road for 320 days. She’ll be raising money for her nonprofit organizations, the Jane Goodall Institute and Roots & Shoots, and encouraging people to take environmental action.
But she is still managing to find time for fun. On Saturday, revelers congregated on the beach here for a 90-dog salute. Hosted by the Wildlife Conservation Network, a nonprofit, and its founder, Charles Knowles, the event saw guests’ Great Danes, goldendoodles, chihuahuas and other dogs bound across the sand in honor of Dr. Goodall, who has said that dogs are her favorite animal (although she is best known for her work on chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania).
On-and-off rain briefly lifted just as Dr. Goodall arrived, which one attendee, Jeff Horowitz, attributed to a phenomenon called “Jane Magic.”
After the canine salute, Dr. Goodall talked with The New York Times. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
I first want to get your thoughts on what just occurred on the beach. I will confess that a dog salute is not something I’d heard of before.
It’s never been thought of before. You know, it didn’t go as they planned it. What they planned was at the end, the dogs would file past me and we’d have a photo. That was the salute. But the rain came. So actually it was much better the way it was. I don’t think anything like that’s ever been done. Never.
Does that feel special?
Oh, it’s amazing. This tour is my 90th birthday year tour around the world and there are events everywhere. We’ve got 25 Jane Goodall Institutes in different countries, and they all make use of my birthday. They do events, they can make money and do auctions. And because it’s Jane’s 90th, big deal — for them. This was the only event I really, really looked forward to in the whole year. And it was as good as I could have imagined.
How do you think it would have gone if it’d been a 90-chimp salute instead?
It would have been a disaster. I wouldn’t have come.
The world knows you best for your research on chimpanzees, but I know you want to talk about dogs, and especially your childhood dog, Rusty. When you left Africa to get your doctorate, what was it about that relationship with a pet that helped you understand primate behavior?
Here I am registered at Cambridge, and very nervous. First thing, I was told that I’ve done everything wrong. Chimps shouldn’t be named, they should be numbered. You can’t talk about their personalities. You can’t talk about them having brains capable of solving problems. And you certainly can’t talk about them having emotions. You cannot be scientifically objective if you have empathy with your subject.
Well, the last I just knew was wrong. But the first three — personality, mind, emotion — my dog Rusty, when I was a child, taught me that was absolute piffle. Balderdash. Rubbish.
What about Rusty showed you that old ways of thinking about animals were wrong?
Probably any dog would have taught me. We all know that they can be happy, sad, fearful and that they’re highly intelligent. Rusty, I’ve never known a dog like him. He didn’t even belong to us. This is the strange thing, like so much of my life. He belonged to a hotel down the road. He used to come along, bark outside our house at 6 in the morning, get let in, stay with us all morning, go home for lunch, come back and leave when we put him out at 10. The hotel knew, they couldn’t have cared less. It was as though he was sent to me.
Sent to you by who?
[Dr. Goodall pointed up.] What I was talking to, saying, “Please don’t let it rain on the whole afternoon today.”
How do you feel about being labeled an icon?
I was walking through the market in Santa Fe. This couple came up, and the woman said something nobody’s ever said since, thank God. She said, “Are you Jane Goodall?” I said yes. She said, “Can I touch you?” Imagine. I said, well, we could shake hands.
The media have created an icon. The only way I can cope, and it took a while, was to think there’s two Janes. This one — the one you saw on the beach with the dogs — and the icon. I have a jolly hard job keeping up with the icon, I can tell you. At first, I put dark glasses on and let my hair down; they still recognized me. Then I realized, for what I’m trying to do, I need to use this.
Was your decision to focus on activism and advocacy a way to take control of the image that the news media was constructing and use it to do good in the world?
Sort of. Right at the beginning, the media was not very kind. When my first information about Gombe came out, about tool-using, there were scientists saying, “Why should we believe her, she hasn’t been to college, she’s just a girl.”
The thing was, I never wanted to be a scientist. Because when I was growing up, women weren’t scientists. Articles began writing and saying, “Jane Goodall is only recognized because she’s on the cover of National Geographic. And she’s only on the cover of National Geographic because she’s got good legs.”
So for me, what did I want to do? I wanted to get back to the chimps and go on learning about them. So if it’s my legs that have got me this position, thank you, legs.
When you ramped up your conservation activism in 1986, were you concerned about an increase in media attention, given this history?
Because I knew what I was supposed to do.
One of the few people who has criticized me recently was Elon Musk . He was critical of what I always say about human population growth as one of the things that we have to think about when we want to protect the planet for future generations. I invented “Voluntary Population Optimization.” Could you criticize that? Voluntary? And optimizing? I talked about V.P.O. and I never got heckled, I never got any problem.
There are worries, though, on the other end of the spectrum, about human overpopulation concerns being turned into involuntary population control.
You must never use control. Never. Control is wrong. You can’t control people like that. It has to be voluntary.
Around Gombe, we introduced this program, TACARE, to help people find ways of living without destroying the environment. It includes restoring fertility to overused farmland without chemicals, and then we introduced scholarships to give girls a chance at secondary education. And also family planning.
So family planning for you is connected to lifting people out of poverty.
And giving women the power to choose for themselves how many children they have.
I’m curious about your packed, worldwide birthday tour. I don’t think I would have the energy for this, and you’ve been traveling extensively for decades.
At your age, I wouldn’t have had the energy. No way. You realize when you get to 90, I don’t know where the end will be, but I’m obviously closer to it than I was when I was 70. Much closer than when I was 60.
But if you feel you have a mission to try and get more people to understand we need to take action, and that your individual action will make a difference, then there’s so much of the world that hasn’t had this message. Instead of slowing down, what can I do but speed up?
One former high school teacher told me she stumbled on the dog salute by accident. But she got the chance to chat with you, and she was ecstatic.
It can sound kooky, I know, but things have happened in my life that look like coincidences, but I don’t think were. And I personally think every person comes into this world with a role to play.
When I look back over my life, I mean, my goodness, the coincidences that led me to the path where I am now were quite clearly points where I could have said yes or no. It depends whether you think there’s just this life or something beyond, I happen to think there’s something beyond. I feel I was born with a mission. Right now, that mission is to give people hope. So when I get exhausted, I look up there and say: “You put me in this position, you bloody well help me get through the evening.”

Jane Goodall's 90th Birthday Wish? More Time to Get Out the Conservation Message

NEW YORK (Reuters) - British primatologist-turned-conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall will mark her 90th birthday next month with a series of talks.
Her greatest wish is for people to start thinking more about the environment, she said in an interview last week. But in the meantime, she says she would like the gift of more years "to continue getting the message out."
"We've got a window of time, I believe, to start slowing down climate change, loss of biodiversity, to alleviate poverty, to bring to an end the terrible industrial farming, especially of animals," she said.
Goodall, a United Nations Messenger of Peace and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, rose to prominence as a pioneering female scientist in the 1960s carrying out groundbreaking research on wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania.
Her insights into the behavior of the animals, including their use of tools, have revolutionized our understanding of the relationship between humans and animals.

Her work has since expanded into environmental education and advocacy.
The upcoming talks will focus on Goodall's reflections as she turns 90 and her view on why immediate action is crucial for the creation of a better future. The events will raise money for the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots and Shoots youth program.
Despite challenges like climate change, loss of biodiversity and poverty, Goodall said she remained hopeful that there was time "to try and persuade the very wealthy to be a little more considerate of the future."
"Without hope, this won't happen. People have to have hope," said Goodall, who will speak in the U.S. on March 30 in Seattle, Washington and on April 1 in New York.
