Where To Get Larvitar, Pupitar & Tyranitar in Pokémon HGSS
Wild Larvitar only appear in Mt. Silver’s cave and the Mountain Area of the Safari Zone.
That means you’ll need to wait until you’ve healed the sickly Ampharos in Olivine Lighthouse to add one to your team – or perhaps longer if you get unlucky with your initial Safari Zone areas.
Once you’ve got a Larvitar, they evolve into Pupitar starting at level 30. Then, when your Pupitar reaches level 55, it will become the mighty Tyranitar.
We’ll go into more detail on the exact catching locations and recommended movesets below.
Catching Your Larvitar
The best place to catch a Larvitar will depend on how far through the game you are.
The easiest location is Mt. Silver’s cave, but you’ll need all 16 gym badges to gain access.
If you want a Larvitar on your team before that point, the Safari Zone is your only option. Depending on which starting areas you’re randomly allocated, this approach becomes available from your 5th badge onward.
Location 1: The Safari Zone’s Mountain Area
After healing the sick Ampharos in Olivine Lighthouse, you’ll get a call from Baoba informing you the Johto Safari Zone is open for business.
This is your first opportunity to catch a Larvitar. Head to the Safari Zone, west of Cianwood City, to get started.
First, you’ll need to check to see if your Safari Zone came with a Mountain Area. There are 10 possible starting configurations, and only half include the Mountain Area. Which set you get is completely random.
The Mountain Area is the one pictured below.
If you started with the Mountain Area, great news!
Larvitar appear in the grass here as 10% of the wild encounters, although only in the morning or day time.
If you add 5 peak blocks, they’ll appear at higher levels and at all times of the day.
Catching Pokémon in the Safari Zone can be tough. Remember, throwing mud makes the wild Pokémon easier to catch, but more likely to flee. Bait makes them less likely to flee, but harder to catch.
If you didn’t start with a Mountain Area, you’ll need to complete both of Baoba’s challenges to unlock the Area Customizer. The second challenge is offered as a phone call three in-game hours after completing the first.
Once you’ve completed both, use the Area Customizer to add the Mountain Area and away you go.
Location 2: Mt. Silver’s Cave
If you’ve already beaten all 16 gyms, catching a Larvitar in Mt. Silver’s cave will be much simpler.
Start by flying to Victory Road.
Enter the building and take the left path. The guard will only allow you through if you’ve collected every badge.
You’ll emerge on the other side on Route 28.
Walk west for a short while until you reach the point pictured below.
See those steps in the bottom-right of the picture above?
Climb them and carry on further west until you reach another set of steps.
Climb these and walk a short distance north.
Before long, you should reach a Pokémon Center.
You’ll find the entrance to Mt. Silver’s cave just a little to the left of the Pokémon Center.
Once inside, Larvitar will appear as 5% of the wild encounters throughout the cave.
Wild Larvitar here are only level 15-20, so it may be a good idea to bring a similar-level Pokémon to weaken them easily.
If you want to skip an evolution stage, wild Pupitar appear in a single specific room not far from the cave’s entrance. They will be at level 45 in HeartGold, and level 30 in SoulSilver.
To reach the room, Surf on the water immediately to your left when you enter Mt. Silver’s cave.
Climb the waterfall and you should see a cave entrance to your right. Pupitar make up 5% of the wild encounters in that small room.
Evolving Your Larvitar
Larvitar’s evolution methods don’t require any special items or unique approaches, just regular training.
Larvitar begin evolving into Pupitar at level 30.
Pupitar then begin evolving into Tyranitar at level 55.
The Larvitar evolution line are HeartGold and SoulSilver’s pseudo-legendary Pokémon.
That means they have three evolution stages that happen at relatively high levels and end up with incredibly high stats in their final form.
As such, Larvitar and Pupitar may not be the strongest Pokémon around, but once they become Tyranitar, you have one of the strongest non-legendary Pokémon in the game at your disposal.
Tyranitar’s stats are excellently balanced.
Their monstrous Attack stat makes them devastating physical attackers, while their still-respectable Special Attack gives them a truly versatile mixed attacking potential. This is complemented by a wide-ranging offensive movepool.
Their formidable bulk makes them even more dangerous.
Their HP, Defense, and Special Defense stats are naturally high – with the Sandstorm caused by their Sand Stream ability further raising their Special Defense by 50%.
The one area Tyranitar lacks in is Speed.
However, this is more than negated by their other strengths.
Tyranitar can play purely offensive, mixed, or supporting roles on your team. They can set up powerful hazards in the form of Stealth Rocks, buff themselves with Dragon Dance, and automatically set up Sandstorm to support weather-based team synergy.

Larvitar is a small, green reptilian Pokémon with rocky skin. It has a blunt spike on top of its head, a short, rounded snout, and triangular, black markings below and on the upper corners of its red eyes. Red scales cover its diamond-shaped belly, and there are several small diamond-shaped holes in its body. Its short arms lack fingers, while its feet have a single toenail each. It has a tail with a conical center surrounded by a ring of plate-like scales, causing it to resemble a tunnel-boring machine.
Larvitar is born deep underground, far from its parent. It emerges to the surface and grows by consuming soil, and it will enter its pupal stage upon eating an entire mountain's worth of earth. This pupal stage is an evolution called Pupitar . Larvitar usually lives in mountains , hills, and caves. It adapts poorly to bright lights.
Larvitar evolves into Pupitar , which evolves into Tyranitar .
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data .)

Larvitar debuted in Pikachu's PikaBoo . Pikachu and its friends invited it and its own friends to a game of hide-and-seek , though Larvitar refused because it holds its responsibility for being charge of guarding the garden. Later, it felt angry about its duty being compromised and viciously kicked a rock at a lawnmower, which went ridiculously haywire, causing it the chase Pikachu and its friends which causes Larvitar to become contrite, though the situation was eventually resolved.
In Pinch Healing , a Larvitar was being babysat by a Poké-Sitter named Matt . Ash and his friends decided to help him with his job. The Larvitar was particularly shy and would use Sandstorm when confronted. By the end of the episode, however, it warmed up to the group, particularly May .

less common, more %'s pls
its hard to judge percentiles, especially when the developers changed up the safari zones (lotad at night in Kanto, that is evidence of a change...).
means that they have the % as well. Besides, i'm not asking for cpt to put it in half n hour later, whenever they are accurate
I do pose this question to you Malorne, do you understand the fact that CaptainGrey is not a dev? I know that he posted where all the pokes are, but at the same time, he probably ventured out into the safari a couple of times. Captain is just giving his input from a CM's prospective. ( C M = Community Manager not Development Manager). Thus, Captain probably does not have the percentiles on top of his head. The devs have a hard job, but at the same time, they shouldn't be responsible for giving us percentiles, that is just plan silly. My conclusion to the problem, lack the percentiles (in the Emerald Guide Book, I read it and when it was showing pokemon, it didn't say "Whismer 100% " instead it stated "Whismer Very Common ." Percentiles are just plan silly and are not needed to make an effective guide. CaptainGrey made a to the point guide that I am planning to advertise on my YT channel, it is to the point, and no need for silly numbers.

CaptainGrey made a to the point guide that I am planning to advertise on my YT channel, it is to the point, and no need for silly numbers.
how is this about your channel again? i prefer numbers of rarity, gives more precise rates.
1. The devs can't give numbers because then that would be like looking into a mathematics guide of PokeMMO rather than a typical guide. Thus, if they did give exact numbers, this would ruin the fun of the game, and this would single-handedly, expose the game too much.
2. Please refrain from insulting my YouTube channel, it is not polite. I am not going to insult you although I do feel like doing it sometimes. Violates Rule 1 clause a
These are two important points I would like to express to you. Please read them. Like I said, I am going to refrain from insulting you for all the distress you are causing here on a simplistic and to the point guide.

i didn't insult your channel lol, was simply asking what was the validity about it with the topic at hand (which is irrelivant btw) also, giving out exact encounter rates doesn't change that much of a thing with the fun of the game, coz it isn't... so i don't see why not actually, why am i even arguing with you lol. Cpt, give enc rates mate
You should play the game itself. You are ruining fun because you are bluntly giving way number information instead of a generic Very Common . Do you want to deface hope for those that want to catch Chansey, but come to find out that there is a 5% chance of encountering it. That would ruin hope for chansey lovers and also discorage people from venturing out into the Safari Zone for that Chansey or Kangaskan. Instead of ruining people's hopes, make a genaric Very Common or Very Rare label, saves the trouble and the more generic you can be, the happier the player base.
More numbers = More stress <---Important formula for an MMO's success
I will not give the % encounter rates, and please stop to debate about it on this topic to keep it clean. Thanks
do i need to remind you that some values are based on encounter rates?

Types [ edit | edit source ]
Larvitar has two types, Rock and Ground .
Larvitar 's Rock type gives a damage bonus with most Rock moves, a 50% increase to special defense during a Sandstorm , and immunity to Sandstorm damage.
Larvitar 's Ground type gives a damage bonus with most Ground moves, and immunity to Sandstorm damage.
Water and Grass moves are super effective against Larvitar , dealing quadruple damage. Fighting , Ground , Steel , and Ice moves are super effective, dealing double damage. Normal , Flying , Rock , and Fire moves are not very effective, dealing half damage. Poison moves are not very effective, dealing quarter damage. Electric moves cannot damage Larvitar .

Covering more than an eight of the Earth's land area, 142 million people live there making it the ninth largest nation by population . Still known for its impressive days as the expansive Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russia was the world's first and largest constitutionally socialist state. A recognized superpower, the USSR was known for its excellence in both arts and science winning many awards in both fields.
Russia changed drastically after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, but it continues to be a powerful and important nation. It has one of the world's fastest growing economies and the world's eight largest GDP by nominal GDP. Russia is also one of the five countries which officially recognized nuclear weapons states. In conjunction with this title, Russia is also a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the G8, APEC and the SCO, and is a leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
A European city in a country that lies over a vast part of Asia, Moscow holds one-tenth of all Russian residents . The city is located in the western region of Russia and is the capital and epicentre of political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation happenings. "Muscovites" , as residents are known, tend to be cultured and worldly. This may be due to the many scientific, educational, and artistic institutions that are based here. An intoxicating mix of the exotic and the familiar, it is the largest city in Europe with the Moscow metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world.
The city is situated on the banks of the Moskva River which flows through much of central Russia. Moscow is actually located in a basin for the Volga, Oka, Klyazma, and Moscow rivers. The city of Moscow is 994 sq. km with 49 bridges spanning the rivers and canals that criss-cross the city.
Forests are another part of Moscow's make-up. They coveer over a third of the territory in the region. A variety of animals like elk, wild boar, deer, foxes, weasels, lynx, martens, and birds make their home here.
Located in the UTC+3 time zone , Moscow has a humid continental climate. The summers tend to be warm and humid and the winters are long, cold, and hard. High temperatures occur during the warm months of June, July and August at about 23 °C (73 °F). Heat waves sometimes grip the city anywhere between May to September with temperatures spiking up to 30 °C (86 °F). Winters are harshly chilly with temperatures dropping to approximately 9 °C (15.8 °F). There is consistent snow cover for 3 to 5 months a year, usually from November to March.
