Belfast turns 250 years old from Belfast Community Media.

Happy 250th Birthday, Belfast!

The Town's Founding and Incorporation

On June 21, 1773, the General Court of Boston passed an act incorporating the settlement of Belfast as a town. It was originally settled in 1770 and required a formal system of town government. According to legend, the name of Belfast was chosen by one of the early settlers, James Miller, who had come from Belfast, Ireland. Other proprietors had advocated for the name Londonderry, but the dispute was ultimately settled by a toss of a penny.

In March 1853, Belfast was divided into five wards and reorganized under a city charter. This new city government was officially inaugurated on March 21, 1853 and has continued ever since. As such, 2023 marks the 250th anniversary of the original incorporation of Belfast, as well as the 170th year for the City of Belfast.

As Belfast celebrates its 250th birthday, it is a good time to look back on the town's rich history and its journey to become the vibrant city it is today.

See All the Best Photos from Taylor Swift's Eras Tour

In honor of the Eras Tour film releasing on Disney+, look back at the best moments from the concert

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour is finally coming to a living room near you!

Following  the theatrical release of the concert film  in October 2023, the Eras Tour film was released on Disney+ on March 14, featuring even more bonus footage from the hit show.

Through the successful world tour , which officially kicked off in March 2023 , Swift takes fans on a musical journey, spanning 10 albums and three hours of music.

With flashy costumes and intricate sets, Swift creates a true spectacle as she performs some of her biggest hits from her illustrious career. Plus, she always has a few surprises up her sleeve, whether it be special guests or announcements about her upcoming albums .

As you relive the Eras Tour with the recent concert film, take a look back at some of the best moments from the show ahead.

It's a Cruel Summer with You

Following a dramatic interlude that references Taylor Swift's first 10 albums, the singer emerges from under the stage to perform her Lover song "Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince." She then segues into her hit track " Cruel Summer ," which leads the audience to erupt in applause.

She's 'The Man'

Marcelo Endelli/TAS23/Getty

Swift then addresses the lively crowd, joking that they're making her feel so powerful as she shows off and kisses her biceps. As she slips on a blazer, she transitions into her next song by letting the crowd know that they're making her feel like " The Man ."

This Is Our Place, We Make the Rules

John Shearer/TAS23/Getty

During the show, Swift brings the Lover House to life as she performs the titular song from her seventh studio album with her full band and backup singers.

Swift ends her Lover set by singing her ballad "The Archer," transforming the stage into a starry spectacle.

It's Fearless

Swift then goes back to her Fearless days as she dons her best gold dress on stage. At one point during the set, she throws up a heart for the audience before doing her signature twirl with her studded guitar.

Standing Ovation

Hector Vivas/TAS23/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management

One of the highlights of Swift's Evermore era has to be her performance of "Champagne Problems" at her moss-covered piano, which always earns a huge standing ovation from the crowd — with one of her longest being eight minutes during her Los Angeles show.

Tribute to Majorie

Buda Mendes/TAS23/Getty

During her Evermore set, Swift brings the audience to tears as she performs "Marjorie" penned about her late grandmother Marjorie Finlay , who was an opera singer. For the special performance, Swifties pay tribute to Marjorie by turning on their camera flashlights, creating a beautiful array of lights across the stadium.

Fun Times with Haim

Jeff Kravitz/TAS23/Getty

For select dates when Haim served as her opening act , Swift brought out the sibling trio to perform "No Body, No Crime" from her Evermore album. While performing in Santa Clara, California (above), Haim even donned their outfits from the " Bejeweled " music video, in which they played Swift's evil stepsisters.

Entering Her Reputation Era

Don Arnold/TAS24/Getty

Nothing quite tops the introduction to Swift's Reputation era as images of snakes and Swift's clanking heels appear on the screen before her hit song "Ready For It?" blares through the speakers. Of course, the transition from "Don't Blame Me" to "Look What You Made Me Do" is a true highlight of the show.

The Old Taylor Can't Come to a Phone Right Now

Taylor Hill/TAS23/Getty

Paying homage to the " Look What You Made Me Do " music video, Swift's backup dancers dress up as "old Taylors" as she performs the hit song on stage. It's a true "eras" moment to see Swift (in all her snake queen glory) with her old selves on one stage.

1, 2, 3, Let's Go!

From clapping during "You Belong with Me" to singing Kendrick Lamar's verse in "Bad Blood," fans have created many interactive chants for the Eras Tour. However, none of them quite top the "1, 2, 3, let's go b----" chant before "Delicate," which even Swift participates in during each show.

Her Princess Moment

Though the Eras Tour's Speak Now set is short, it's definitely sweet as Swift has her princess moment in a gorgeous gown for "Enchanted."

Long Live the Memories We Made

Emma McIntyre/TAS23/Getty

During a few special performances, Swift extended her Speak Now set by singing her hit " Long Live " with her band.

A Perfect Night to Dress Up Like Hipsters

For her Red set, Swift dresses up like a hipster for her performance of "22." In a heartwarming moment, she ends the song by giving her hat to a special fan in the audience.

We Remember It 'All Too Well'

Swift perfectly sets the scene as she sings the 10-minute version of her song "All Too Well" on stage. As she reminisces about fall and winter, the seasons come to life with leaf and snow confetti.

Trouble, Trouble

Ashok Kumar/TAS24/Getty

Swift doesn't hold back with the special effects as she sings her hit "I Knew You Were Trouble" and bursts of smoke appear around her on stage.

Duets with Phoebe Bridgers

John Shearer/TAS23/Getty

During a few select performances, Swift was joined by her opening act Phoebe Bridgers to perform their song "Nothing New" from Red (Taylor's Version) .

The Folklore Cabin

Buda Mendes/TAS23/Getty

Following her Red set, Swift transitions to her Folklore era where she brings the woodsy cabin to life on stage and soulfully sings tracks such as "Cardigan" and "The Last Great American Dynasty."

Lost in the Memory

Terence Rushin/TAS23/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management

At one point during her Folklore set, Swift puts her cape dress to good use as she twirls around on stage, getting up close with the audience.

The Rain Came Pouring Down

TAS Rights Management/Getty

During her concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts (above), Swift found a way to "shake off" the rain as she danced the night away in her green two-piece.

Burning It Down

Hours after bringing the Lover House to life, Swift burns it to the ground as she performs her hit "Bad Blood" during her 1989 set. During her show at Arrowhead Stadium (above), Swift perfectly matched the fire hue with her orange outfit and boots.

And the Surprise Song Is . . .

Swift's acoustic set has become one of the most anticipated moments of the Eras Tour as Swifties (in the stadium and watching at home) eagerly wait to hear which songs the singer will perform at the show. Surprise songs have ranged from early hits like "Tim McGraw" to a recent introduction of mashups like "New Year's Day/Peace."

Sweet Moments with Sabrina Carpenter

Don Arnold/TAS24/[SOURCE] for TAS Rights Management

During one special show in Sydney, Australia (above), Swift was joined by her opening act Sabrina Carpenter who joined her in a special performance of "White Horse" at the flower-covered piano.

Speak Now (Taylor's Version)

Swift has also used her acoustic set as an opportunity to make some very special announcements, starting with the announcement of Speak Now (Taylor's Version) during her Nashville show on May 5, 2023 (above).

Friendly Reunions

John Shearer/TAS23/Gett

Months later as Swift debuted the music video for " I Can See You " from Speak Now (Taylor's Version) , she enlisted some surprise guests . The singer was joined on stage by Presley Cash, Joey King and her ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner , who all played pivotal roles in her Speak Now era.

1989 (Taylor's Version)

Kevin Winter/TAS23/Getty

As Swift performed one of her final shows for the U.S. leg of the Eras Tour on Aug. 9, 2023 (above), she shocked the crowd by announcing 1989 (Taylor's Version) on stage. For the special moment, she debuted several new blue concert looks in honor of the album.

Special Guest Ice Spice

Kevin Mazur/TAS23/Getty

Swift turned MetLife Stadium into a party in May 2023 as she was joined by Ice Spice (above) for a special performance of " Karma ."

Making the Whole Place Shimmer

Swift proves that a diamond's gotta shine as she performs "Bejeweled" on the stage, complete with delightful choreography from her backup dancers.

Dressing for Revenge

Swift's sultry performance of "Vigilante S---" is another highly talked about moment from the show (and has quickly gone viral on social media as many try to replicate her intricate chair choreography).

Confetti Falls to the Ground

John Shearer/TAS23/Getty for TAS Rights Management

It wouldn't be a Taylor Swift show without confetti! As Swift closes the tour with "Karma," the stage is covered with rainbow confetti representing Swift's first 10 albums.

45 Remarkable Things To Do In Belfast Maine [2024]

For a small town, there are so many great things to do in Belfast, Maine . It’s definitely one of my favorite towns in Maine. It’s got an artsy yet outdoorsy vibe to it that is really unique.

One of the great things about living in central Maine is it seems you are not too far from anything you want to do, whether it’s on the coast, in the mountains, or in the city.

A long dock leading out into a lake on a beautiful summer day in Belfast, Maine.

With barely 7,000 people, Belfast is exactly what you think of when you imagine a traditional coastal Maine town. Especially when you see a sign like this:

A sign for a dinghy tie-up in Belfast Harbor.

Here Are The 45 Best Things To Do In Belfast, Maine [2024]

Just three hours north of Portland, Maine lies the coastal city of Belfast. Known for its Irish heritage, eco-vibe (honestly, it has an eco-village ), and charming little shops, this quaint town is an ideal day trip for those looking to experience an authentic coastal town.

If you are wondering what to do in Belfast Maine, here’s a massive list of ideas that is sure to keep you busy during your visit!

✅ Arts, Music, & Theater

1. come to belfast for the all roads music festival.

I know this is only held once a year (in May), but it’s so worth coming for! You’ll have to plan ahead because places to stay go fast, and the festival is three days long. There is an amazing number of local bands that play at various spots around downtown Belfast.

You’ll have trouble deciding which bands to see because there are so many of them. It’s an amazingly great time. You get to wander around one of the most picturesque towns in Maine, listen to incredible music, and have a ball.

There are different levels of tickets available because you might be someone like me who wants to attend the opening and closing events. I also happen to think this is one of the best things to do in Belfast Maine!

A cosmo at Darby's with the All Roads Music Festival schedule up on the phone.

What Is Belfast Known For?

Belfast is a quintessential Maine coastal town. It’s got an artsy vibe and everyone shops at the co-op. Downtown Belfast, Maine is very walkable and has a great variety of shops and restaurants. There are many historic buildings and many opportunities to get out into nature.

2. See A Movie At The Colonial Theater

I love this theater. It’s so old that it’s on the National Register of Historic Places, but it is just so cool. It’s been listed for sale since at least 2017 that I know of , but it’s still operating. It’s now run on a community model, which is so exciting!

Here’s a link to the theater .

Walking in is not like walking into a regular, run-of-the-mill movie theater. You can feel the history of the building as you walk through narrow doorways and go up or down stairs to get to the theater your film is showing in.

You can see new movies here, but they also have special screenings of movies and documentaries that you won’t see anywhere. I’ve seen some great movies there that a couple of years later ended up in mainstream theaters.

I’ve also seen some one-of-a-kind movies here, like a festival of short films all about nature and wildlife.

It’s right down the street from several restaurants in downtown Belfast, so you can make a whole night of it.

Several old books lying open with pages spreading out.

3. Visit One Of Belfast’s Independent Bookstores

These aren’t your typical chain bookstores. It’s hard to believe, but there are three independent bookstores in Belfast! I sometimes wonder if there are three independent bookstores in entire states anymore.

➡️ Left Bank Books on Church St. I’ve spent my fair share of time in this bookstore. It has such an interesting variety of books for such a small space (well, small compared to the giant chain bookshops). You could easily, easily spend an hour just looking around.

The entire shop feels like it’s personally curated , and maybe it is. The atmosphere is welcoming, and if you need help, you know you are talking to another reader, another person who loves books. It’s just one of those places you have to visit to understand.

➡️ Old Professor’s Bookshop/Craig Olson Books on Main St. focuses on rare and collectible books.

A seaglass necklace I bought in Belfast, Maine.

4. Purchase Something From A Local Artisan

➡️ The Lupine Cottage (lupines are those purple flowers you see everywhere) is a co-op of Maine artists. You will find an incredible variety of Maine-made items, ranging from hand-painted scarves to jewelry to wooden kitchenware to glasswork.

Everything is unique and handmade. This is a seaglass necklace that I got there.

➡️ Waterfall Arts is the type of place that you can only find in a town like Belfast that supports the arts. It offers exhibitions and workshops for all ages, and now has a glassblowing studio. I first visited when they hosted the opening of the All Roads Music Festival.

It’s a really cool space and one that, if you are in the area, you should definitely visit. Check their calendar to see what is happening on the dates you’ll be in the area.

➡️ JP Studio Pottery on Main St. offers a variety of beautiful, handmade (obv) pieces of pottery.

➡️ Jenni Blue Ceramics on City Point Rd. works in graphite and pen and ink, and puts those pieces of art (sketches?) onto a variety of ceramics. Her work is in shades of gray, and it’s striking. From platters to tea towels to mugs, you’ll find something amazing and affordable.

➡️ Take home some truly permanent and personal art–get your vacation tattoo done at Permanent Expressions Tattoo Studio .

➡️ The Blue Alpaca Store & Ranch has a store downtown and a ranch right in Belfast where you can get a free tour. You’ll get to see the adorable alpacas whose fur the items in their store is made from.

✅ Restaurants & Bars In Belfast, Maine

5. eat at one of belfast’s many restaurants.

There are so many restaurants here. I’m just going to list the ones I’ve eaten at. I’m pretty much a creature of habit, so I really ate at the same places over and over. Most of them are right in downtown Belfast.

➡️ Chase’s Daily was my go-to breakfast spot. I would always get the same thing–their tofu and swiss chard breakfast sandwich. It is insanely delicious. Chase’s is always packed, but the service is still quite good.

Three of us having drinks at Darby's in Belfast, Maine.

➡️ When I just wanted a drink, Darby’s offered my favorite cosmo, so after Chase’s Daily, Darby’s was my go-to restaurant. Honestly, the cosmos were so good that even though I ate there a bunch of times, it’s the cosmos I remember!

Laan Xang restaurant in Belfast, Maine

➡️ Laan Xang Cafe is a Thai/Laotian restaurant right downtown. My friends and I sat outside on their upper deck overlooking the harbor. We all enjoyed our food–and our drinks–as we were there for the All Roads Music Festival.

➡️ Three Tides is closed for renovations, but this is a great low-key place to grab some food and a beer.

➡️ Marshall Wharf Brewing Company has a tasting room , and a beer garden , and offers over 30 craft beers . They are located right on the water, and I can’t remember if it’s MW or Three Tides, but one of them often has a fire going outside in the back if the night is chilly.

➡️ I love the Belfast Co-op . I’m including it in restaurants because they have a small cafe there and I ate there a lot. The food was always really good, and the atmosphere was really welcoming.

➡️ Rollie’s is like a basic pizza place sort of restaurant. Think of your local __________House of Pizza, and Rollie’s is pretty much like that. I don’t mean that in a bad way, like it’s just reheated frozen food or something (!), because it’s not.

My food has always been really good.

➡️ I think I only ate at Delvino’s Grill and Pasta House once or twice. The food was really good, and while it was a little less casual than Darby’s, it was still a comfortable atmosphere.

➡️ Nautilus Seafood & Grill is a pretty nice place right on the water. I ate there once or twice and the food was really good. It’s probably on par with Delvino’s–a little more casual I think, and comfortable and friendly.

➡️ Wild Cow Creamery Handcrafted Ice Cream on the Harbor Walk has super good ice cream. They consistently come up with irresistible flavors.

➡️ Sit out on the deck at Front Street Pub and have some fresh seafood and/or a drink. It’s the only place I’ve ever gotten a pickled fiddlehead with my drink.

✅ Belfast Parks & Recreation

6. take a break in the park.

There are over 10 parks in Belfast. Whether you are looking for a park to laze around in for an afternoon, reading one of the books you picked up downtown, or something a little more exciting like a park with a pool or a dog park, Belfast has you covered.

Check out the Belfast, Maine Parks & Facilities for details on all the parks you have to choose from in the city.

✅ Support Local Artists

7. participate in the belfast arts scene.

➡️ The Belfast Maskers Community Theater is just really cool (well, kind of like everything in Belfast). Their performances are right downtown on Court St. at the Basil Burwell Community Theater, and if you know the vibe of Belfast , you’ll know that the performances are well worth attending.

➡️ Spend Friday evening at the Fourth Friday Art Walk . Belfast is a great town to walk around in anyway, but during the art walk, you’ll get the opportunity to comfortably wander in and out of galleries. Gallery owners and artists are more than happy to welcome you into their spaces.

Just a giant rooster sculpture in downtown Belfast!

➡️ The Crosby Center is a great old building with all types of event spaces in it. I’ve seen local musicians play there, and I know they also have plays and other local performances. It’s a great location, and you can walk to a nearby restaurant and have dinner or drinks.

✅ Museums & History

8. learn about belfast’s history.

➡️ The Belfast Historical Society has a variety of exhibitions, and they have a bunch of videos that you can watch online if you don’t have time to visit. They also lead a variety of walking tours, including the:

➡️ Museum of the Streets , which are cool walking tours in towns all throughout Maine. If you can’t make the guided tour, someone has made a self-guided tour. Here is the link for that.

✅ Shopping In Belfast

9. souvenir shop at some unique belfast retail stores.

Belfast has such a great, walkable downtown . It’s full of shops ranging from arts to intimate apparel to souvenirs . One of my favorite shops, Coyote Moon, sells unique jewelry, clothes, and small souvenirs, as well as some new-age types of stuff.

➡️ Stop at Perry’s Nut House on Rt. 1. A place that sells nuts? Why would I want to stop there? Perry’s sells more than nuts; it is a classic Maine roadside attraction . You will find all sorts of interesting things to peruse in this quirky store.

Sure, they have nuts, but they also have some really old-school toys and candy. I’m not sure where they even find these things, but it’s fascinating to browse, for sure.

➡️ The Belfast Co-op isn’t really shopping, shopping, but it’s still a really great store. If someone asked me to pick just one place that exemplified Belfast, I’d pick the Belfast Co-op. It’s like a community meeting place.

If you go to the website, note the person wearing Bean boots. It’s such a Maine store!

You can, of course, buy groceries or grab a bite to eat in the cafe, but you’ll also likely see people working on their laptops or just catching up over a coffee, tea, or kombucha. Plus, it actually has ‘seaweed’ listed on an aisle directory. That might be my favorite thing of all!

Aisle sign at the Belfast Co-op that lists 'seaweed' as an item in that aisle.

Since we are talking about food, Belfast has not one, but TWO pretty big farmers’ markets . These are both serious markets with long-term vendors and an enormous variety of foods to purchase.

➡️ The Belfast Farmers’ Market is held Fridays from 9-1. While they have an amazing amount of local food, they also have local artisans selling their wares. Here is a link to their vendors so you can decide what you might want to purchase.

➡️ United Farmer’s Market , technically The United Farmers Market of Maine, is an indoor market open on Saturdays from 9-2. It, too, has a huge array of vendors, from vegetables to essential oils to handmade beeswax wraps.

A lot of the same vendors attend both markets, but here is a list of vendors for the United Farmers’ Market.

✅ Things To Do In Belfast, Maine Near The Water

10. take a walk.

➡️ The Harbor Walk is really beautiful. Belfast Harbor Walk parking is right in the harbor with easy access to the Harbor Walk. On one side of the main parking lot, the walk is park-like, but along the water.

On the other side, it runs all along the harbor where the boats are moored. There are benches where you can take a break, and there is also a great ice cream shop (noted above!).

Here is the City of Belfast’s Harbor Walk map.

A view of the Belfast Harbor with a few boats in the water.

➡️ Walk across Belfast’s Footbridge , also called the Armistice Bridge . It used to be part of Rt. 1, but now it’s only a pedestrian bridge. You’ll see people fishing off it, getting in their daily run, or just taking a walk. It’s located right on the Harbor Walk.

This is a picture taken from the footbridge.

Picture of the Belfast Harbor taken from the Armistice Bridge

➡️ Walk the three-mile out Passy (short for Passagassawakeag) Rail Trail which runs along the river. You can pretty much just keep going out past where the Harbor Walk turns into crushed stone.

It’s an easy walk or bike ride, and it’s stroller and wheelchair accessible (as is the Harbor Walk).

➡️ For something a little more rugged, check out the trails offered through the Coastal Mountains Land Trust.

✅ Things To Do In Belfast, Maine On The Water

11. go kayaking in belfast harbor.

Rent a kayak for the day so you can see Belfast from the water. While Water Walkers isn’t right in Belfast (they are in Monroe, Maine) they will still deliver a kayak to you in Belfast, so I’m including them.

You can also bring your own kayak. There is a perfect little spot to put your kayak in right at the Belfast Boathouse. You can park next to a little beach area (not a swimming area) and get your kayaks in the water. From here it’s just a short paddle out to the harbor where all the boats are moored.

Here’s a picture of the spot. It’s right next to a public parking lot. If you paddle out and to the left you’ll end up at the harbor.

A little spot to put kayaks in in Belfast.

Depending on the time of day, the tide coming in or going out makes it a workout paddling under the bridge, but it’s not in the extremely challenging category. If you’re a kayaker, you’ve certainly paddled upstream before, so just expect that when you reach the bridge.

Map of where to put your kayak in in Belfast, Maine

12. Cruise Belfast Harbor

Take an amazing cruise around the harbor with the Back and Forth Boat . This isn’t just a quick ride on a lobster boat (though that would be cool all on its own), but a for-real experience! Check out their website and you’ll see what I mean.

They don’t just offer a boat ride, you can go on a treasure hunt, eat lobster rolls on a lobster boat in Maine–well, I’m not sure what can follow that! If you are going to be in Belfast anyway, the Back and Forth and the Out and About are must-do experiences.

✅ Attend A Festival

13. celebrate . . . something . . . .

Belfast has festivals all year long. They don’t all have websites, and some were interrupted by COVID, but here are some festivals that you shouldn’t have any trouble getting info on.

✔️ February: The Whoopla Weekend festival is basically a celebration of winter. There are tons of outdoor activities, of course, like snow sculpture exhibitions, sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing–you name it. If it can be done outdoors, they are doing it.

For those less hardy folks, there are also plenty of indoor activities, kicking off with the Ice Ball, free movies at the Colonial Theater, and food cook-offs at the United Maine Farmers’ Market.

✔️ June : There is Arts in the Park . Arts in the Park is a long weekend full of artists sharing their talents, whether that’s on a canvas or a guitar. You will find unique pieces, as well as types, of art. It’s a real celebration of both Belfast and the arts.

✔️ July : July brings the Celtic Festival , or Celtic Celebration, depending on who you talk to. The celebration/festival is held in a beautiful park overlooking the water. There are lots of vendors and food trucks, and, of course, awesome music.

✔️ August : The Belfast Harbor Fest is held the third weekend of August. It is a celebration of the harbor itself, which has an integral place in Belfast’s history. There are a variety of events, from a 5K to a community breakfast to boat building demonstrations.

✔️ September : The Maine Weinerfest may be the only festival celebrating those adorable weiner dogs, the dachshund! That’s right. There is an entire festival about them. Parades. Costumes. And the cutest dogs ever.

✅ Odds & Ends Things To Do In Belfast, Maine

14. do some yoga.

Belfast definitely has its share of opportunities for people to practice yoga and other forms of well-being. I’m not sure where else you can practice yoga on an alpaca ranch , but you can in Belfast, Maine!

(Actually, I just learned there is goat yoga in Maine, too! Scroll almost to the bottom of the linked page to read more about that.)

A funny looking alpaca face staring at the camera.

15. Go Bowling

Sometimes it rains and you just want to be indoors. There are other reasons you might want to spend a day inside I suppose, and if you do, visit All Play on Searsport Rd. in Belfast. It’s a modern bowling alley with some traditional arcade games as well.

They have video games, a foosball table, and air hockey available if you don’t want to bowl. And, of course, you can also grab some food here.

16. Learn To Curl (or at least visit and watch some curling)

This is the only curling club I’ve ever seen outside of Canada. I’m sure we have some somewhere. I’ve just never seen them. But, of course, Belfast being the cool town that it is, they have an actual curling club!

The Belfast Curling Club offers learn-to-curl and has leagues. Maybe you don’t have time to learn *how* to curl, but maybe you have time to watch a game or practice. Where else are you actually going to see curling in person? Only in Belfast!

A close up view of some curling stones at L.L. Bean's curling display in Freeport.

Where To Stay In Belfast, Maine

There are many places to stay in Belfast. Here are two places I’ve stayed that I know are nice.

✅ Fireside Inn, Ocean’s Edge

The pool, hot tub, and room at the Fireside Inn in Belfast, Maine,

I stayed here for one of the All Road Festivals I attended. The room was clean and the staff was helpful. There is also a private beach, and you get a view of the harbor from every room. If you need to take a cab, it’s easy to get one to go back and forth from downtown.

Guests rate it 4.3/5.0 stars.

👉 Check To See If Your Dates Are Available

✅ The Jeweled Turret Inn

Dining room at the Jewelled Turret Inn in Belfast, Maine.

This is another place I stayed during an All Roads Festival weekend. It’s a beautiful bed and breakfast. It’s a little more expensive than staying at the Fireside Inn, but you also get breakfast here.

Also, since it’s located in the center of Belfast, you won’t need your car or a taxi to explore the town.

👉 Book Your Room Here

A new Holocaust exhibit in Boston confronts a painful history

  • Arielle Gray

Nearly 80 years ago, World War II was finally coming to an end. In January of 1945, the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz, was liberated by the Soviet army — around 7,000 people were freed, though many would later die due to malnutrition and other medical complications.

And liberation came too late for the 1.1 million people whose lives were claimed by Auschwitz in the years it operated.

For the first time, hundreds of Holocaust artifacts are in Boston as a part of the international exhibition, “ Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away .”

Running through Sept. 2 at Saunders Castle at Park Plaza, the exhibit explores the painful legacy of one of history’s darkest chapters.

Created by Spanish company Musealia in collaboration with Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, “Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away” comes at a time when religious and racial tensions are high. This is the first traveling exhibition on Auschwitz.

“An exhibition this substantial and comprehensive on Auschwitz ... is unlikely to ever be assembled again,” said Luis Ferreiro, director of Musealia.

Seven years ago, he was inspired to explore the idea of an exhibit after reading "Man's Search for Meaning," a book that chronicles author Viktor Frankl's time spent in Nazi concentration camps. Frankl and his family were sent to Auschwitz.

“Listening to their stories and understanding how these events could happen is the best action we, as citizens of the world, can take against the reoccurrence of such a horrific event,” Ferreiro said.

This is the first time a collection of this size has been brought together to tell the story of the Holocaust — the exhibit features 700 artifacts from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and over 20 other museums. Objects include materials and suitcases packed by Auschwitz deportees, a gas mask and even large portions of an original prisoner’s barrack.

“These artifacts call upon guests to prevent the dehumanization of others by building a future free from antisemitism, racism and all ideologies of hatred,” said Piotr Cywinski, director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial.

Upon entering "Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away," visitors are guided chronologically through the exhibit via an audio-tour device, starting with an exploration of how so many people bought into genocidal, anti-Semitic, racist political rhetoric.

Founded in 1919, the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, or the Nazi party, helmed by Adolf Hitler, would go on to kill an estimated six million Jewish people under the guise of restoring the German nation to its former glory. The total number of people killed throughout the Holocaust, including other minority groups and prisoners of war, is closer to 11 million.

Auschwitz was the largest of the many concentration camps established by the Nazis after the beginning of World War II. It received its first detainees in 1940 and operated for five years until 1945.

Before Soviet forces liberated Auschwitz in January, nearly 60,000 prisoners were forced on death marches. Around 15,000 people died on those marches. The war would eventually end months later in May when German forces surrendered in Berlin.

Divided into four parts, co-curator Paul Salmons says this exhibition "will show objects related to the perpetrators themselves... it shows the personal items of the victims and tells the stories of the individual people, the families that were torn apart, the communities that were devastated."

Items, like a bright red woman's shoe and a child's doll, bring detail to the lives of those killed at Auschwitz. They help concretize and contextualize a history that many have only experienced through history books. Other objects, like the barracks and operating table, underscore the dehumanization necessary to commit such atrocities like the ones that happened at Nazi concentration camps.

John Norman, the president of World Heritage Exhibitions who is presenting the exhibit locally, points out that “Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away" will help viewers confront the sobering reality of humanity's past. This confrontation is what raises awareness and with awareness comes the ability to choose differently in the future.

"Within the echoes of history's shadows, lies a vital truth; to remember, to learn and to honor," he said.

This is the exhibit’s New England premiere, and Boston will likely be the only East Coast stop during its 14-city tour.

" Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away " is on view at the Castle at Park Plaza through Sept. 2.

Anthony Boyle Is Moving Forward by Looking Backward

The actor has broken out on TV this year in the historical series “Masters of the Air” and “Manhunt.”

  • Share full article

In a black and white photo, a man in a white T-short and jeans has a pensive expression, with his head leaning on his hand

By Christopher Kuo

Anthony Boyle was out of luck. He had been expelled from his Catholic boys school for “behavioral problems.” He had also been fired from his job at a nightclub after getting caught drinking while working.

And so Boyle, then 16, figured it was as good a time as any to chase the dream that had begun to take shape in his head. He typed a string of words into Google search: “Belfast male acting auditions.”

He eventually landed some unorthodox roles, including a part in a production of “Romeo and Juliet” that was staged on a massive chessboard and a stint in a ghost tour, in which he wore a black bag over his head and scared people by pretending to be the wrathful spirit of an 18th-century Irish revolutionary.

Though Boyle would later return to school, he didn’t stop acting.

“I never felt like there was another option,” he said in a recent video interview. “I never felt like there was like a backup plan that I could go and study medicine or go and do something else. It was always just acting.”

More than a decade later, Boyle has arrived at another turning point in his performing career. Despite finding success on the stage in London and New York, he had landed only minor roles onscreen before this year.

Now, the man who hated school suddenly seems to be the go-to actor for televised historical dramas. Boyle plays Major Harry Crosby, an airborne navigator battling seasickness and self-doubt, in the Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air,” about the travails faced by America’s 100th Bomb Group in World War II and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman.

He also has a leading role in “Manhunt,” which premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, as the actor John Wilkes Booth, who assassinates Abraham Lincoln and tries to evade capture.

For Boyle, 29, this momentum hasn’t come a moment too soon. He still looks young, with an impish grin, thick brown hair and a boyish face, but he has also grown more conscious of time slipping by. During a recent interview, someone had asked him how he felt about turning 30, which will happen in June.

“I was having a mild existential crisis in the middle of the interview,” he said, laughing.

Boyle comes from a working-class family in the Catholic, west side of Belfast. His mother was a receptionist, and his father worked in security. None of his relatives or anyone else he knew had ever gone into acting. Boyle grew up watching films like “Quadrophenia” and “This Is England” and imagining himself onscreen.

Traditional schooling never suited him, and he received a string of suspensions for impersonating his teachers. After getting expelled at 16, he was transferred with a group of other unruly boys to a large Catholic girls school that had just decided to accept boys.

During this time, he performed in small local theaters, including a role in a Simon Stephens play called “Herons.” A teacher from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama saw him in that production and convinced him to enroll as a student.

Leaving Belfast to attend the posh college in Wales — a school where people ate foods he had never tried and performed in Shakespearean dramas — felt like entering a new culture, Boyle said.

“I remember calling my family and saying, ‘They’re offering me hummus,’ and my family screamed on the phone, ‘Don’t eat it! Don’t eat it!’” he said.

Attending the school allowed him to reach new heights in his acting. After two years there, he left to take the role of Scorpius Malfoy in the West End and Broadway productions of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” a performance that earned him an Olivier Award and a Tony nomination.

“My longest run before that was five days in a community center in East Belfast, and then it was the West End, so it was a real shift,” he said. “It was a baptism of fire.”

He later had minor roles in “Tolkien,” a 2019 film about the early life of the author J.R.R. Tolkien, and “Tetris,” a 2023 thriller from Apple TV+, before being cast in “Masters of the Air.”

Boyle gravitated to Crosby because of the airman’s diffidence and humanity. He was a conflicted character who vomited on his fellow crew members and accidentally led his plane astray into enemy-occupied France.

In 2021, to prepare for this role, Boyle and the rest of the cast, including Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Callum Turner, headed to boot camp.

“Most rehearsal processes, you’re sitting there with a director and cast and you’re leafing through a script and you’re drinking lattes and talking about childhood trauma,” he said. “This was like you got there, and there was a guy yelling at you and calling you by your character name and saying, ‘Drop and give me 20, maggot.’”

For three weeks, Boyle did push-up routines and other fitness exercises and learned how to study maps for navigation. Filming took place in replica B-17s that were suspended 50 feet in the air and surrounded by 360-degree screens.

After filming on “Masters of the Air” wrapped up, Boyle had about three months to grow a bushy mustache for his next role as a historical figure, the infamous John Wilkes Booth. Monica Beletsky, one of the producers of “Manhunt,” said Boyle was the right choice to play Booth because of his charisma and cheekiness, as well as his background.

“He has a classic training,” she said. “And I think that lends itself to being convincing in other time periods.”

To ready himself for the role, Boyle spend weeks with a group of cowboys, drinking whiskey, chewing tobacco and learning how to ride a horse. In “Manhunt,” he trades his Irish accent for an American one and renders Booth as a charismatic, narcissistic figure, steeped in rage and racism.

His string of historical dramas will continue with “Say Nothing,” a show FX is developing about the sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles; Boyle was cast as an Irish Republican Army officer. He also plays an investigator in the Disney+ series “Shardlake,” a whodunit about a murder in 16th-century England that will premiere later this year.

Boyle still doesn’t seem to know exactly why he keeps getting cast in historical roles. But he has a theory.

“I got a face that looks like it can’t comprehend the internet,” he said.

Belfast City Hall is the ideal place to finish our tour, where you can enjoy lunch or coffee in the beautiful Bobbin Cafe before exploring the free, self-guided visitor exhibitions, the beautiful stained glass and opulent marble halls, which chart the history of the city from a quiet hamlet, to the vibrant, attractive city it is today, mapping the major political events along the way.
