Off season:

You’ll find the cheapest flights to Hawaii during either the spring or autumn months of the year – April to June and September to early December. You’ll find the weather is at its best too so booking cheap flights to Hawaii outside of the major tourist seasons can be a big benefit. Entertainment

This is trivial however, I was in row 11B there aren’t any windows in that row. I enjoy being able to look out the window.

Cheap airline tickets to Hawaii lead to leis and luaus, but try and imagine a world without the hula. This provocative hip-shaking, belly-baring dance was once banned by missionaries. Thank goodness, the hula is still legal today and Hawaii travelers will get their fair share of it. The hula is so contagious; it’s likely you’ll start dancing on your cheap flight to Hawaii.

Hawaii is exactly what the movies and photographs make it out to be. Blue lagoons, palm trees, rainforests, secret gardens, cascading waterfalls, and towering volcanoes. Find a flight to Hawaii to see beaches that range in color from gold to black and its waters are clear blue. There’s no shortage of adventure in Hawaii, which is why tourists always return year after year.

Hawaii is made up of eight main islands – Hawaii, Maui, Kahoolawe, Oahu,  Kauai , Lanai, Molokai, Niihau – and hundreds of smaller islands, and inter-island Hawaii flights are relatively inexpensive. The Aloha State was formally admitted as the 50th state to the United States on August 21, 1959.The best way to see Hawaii is to choose your island and fly directly there. Travelers can get additional Hawaii flights from Oahu, the Big Island,  Maui , and Kauai. But before you leave for your return flight, make sure you grab your lei.

Getting to and around the city of Hawaii

Bus routes number 19 and 20 both run from the airport and go to downtown Honolulu making it relatively easy to find yourself in the city. The only trouble you might have with the buses is if you have a lot of baggage or if you have oversized bags. In that case you are better off jumping in a taxi from outside of the airport. The price of a taxi is a lot more than a bus however although if you can split the fare with a friend you’ll find it won’t be too bad. Make sure you agree on the fee before getting in though.

There are two buses, Route 40 and Route 35, both of which are accessible from the airport. They only operate every 90 minutes though so once you’ve booked your flights to Hawaii it might be worth looking into securing transport before you fly. The other option is to jump into a taxi although this won’t be cheap, splitting the fare with a friend makes it a lot more reasonable.

Multiple airlines offering round-trip flights to Hawaii starting at $180

Mackenzie Roche

If you're a resident of Austin, Los Angeles or San Francisco, you're in luck. You can benefit from wide open availability to Hawaii on numerous airlines in the first few months of 2024.

Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines are all offering cheaper-than-usual flights to the islands.

Deal basics

Airlines : Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian and United

Routes : Austin, Los Angeles and San Francisco to Kauai, Maui, Oahu and the Big Island

How to book : Browse Google Flights and book directly through the airline

Travel dates : January through May 2024

Book by : As soon as possible

Sample flights

Since there are so many options, you can choose your flight based on departure time and airline, not just based on what is cheapest. For example, a Jan. 29 flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is $189 across the five different airlines.

Whether you have loyalty to a particular carrier or hold a specific airline-branded credit card, choose the flight option that best aligns. (Pro tip: In this situation, don't choose United because it charges for carry-on bags. A carry-on bag is included with the other airlines.)

hawaii round trip for 2

There are also inexpensive options from San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The below flight applies to Alaska's Saver fare, which comes with a carry-on bag but minimal other perks. Still, for a $180 round-trip fare, it's hard to beat.

hawaii round trip for 2

Flights from Austin are naturally a bit more expensive and fall around $289. Some of the best options from the Texas capital are to Lihue Airport (LIH) on Kauai and Kona International Airport (KOA) on Hawaii's Big Island.

In the below example, you'll have a layover in Honolulu each way.

Maximize your purchase

Don't forget to use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card : 2 points per dollar spent on travel
  • American Express® Gold Card : 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly through the airline or American Express Travel
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : 5 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly through the airline or American Express Travel on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year
  • Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees ): 3 points per dollar spent on airfare
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve : 3 points per dollar spent on airfare

Bottom line

Take advantage of these ultra-low flight prices and book a trip to Hawaii as a holiday gift to yourself. If you need inspiration as to where to stay, these are some of the best hotels and resorts on the islands .

Hawaii is often on the short list of dream destinations for a relaxing beach holiday. But a potential trip to paradise doesn’t happen without first asking the critical question: How much is a trip to Hawaii?

The answer varies depending on where you stay and when you travel. We’ve crunched the numbers to give you an idea of how much you can expect to spend so you’re better prepared to budget for a vacation in Hawaii.

Estimated Hawaii trip cost

hawaii round trip for 2

Beachfront view of the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. (Photo courtesy of Hilton)

We looked at the estimated costs of a 10-night trip for a family of four (two adults and two children) during the peak summer travel season, as well as a seven-night trip for that same family during the shoulder season.

Here are the hypotheticals:

Travel to Honolulu on the island of Oahu, the most popular island for visitors to Hawaii.

Round-trip flights for four from Los Angeles.

A peak-season trip assumes a June 25, 2024, departure, while a shoulder-season trip assumes a May 8, 2024, departure.

We used three property types to assess price estimates:

A beachfront four-star resort: Hilton Hawaiian Village.

A three-star hotel: Holiday Inn Express Waikiki.

A condo: Various Waikiki units on Vrbo.com.

Totals include resort fees :

$50 per night at the four-star resort.

$29.49 per night at the three-star hotel.

All management and cleaning fees at the condo units.

Totals include parking costs of:

$68.06 per day at the four-star resort.

$45 per day at the three-star hotel.

Parking isn't included in condo totals (varies by building/unit).

Meals include nightly dinners of about $225, including drinks, taxes and tips.

At a four-star resort, meal estimates include breakfasts and lunches totaling about $100 per day.

Costs at a three-star hotel, which includes free breakfast, include only lunches totaling about $50 per day.

Tightly budgeted meals assume cutting food costs by 60% with cheap eats and/or preparing meals.

Activities for the 10-night trip include a snorkeling excursion, surfing lessons, a Pearl Harbor visit and a day at a water park. For the seven-night trip: snorkeling, the Pearl Harbor visit and a day at a water park (no surfing lessons).

Economy rental car reserved through DiscountHawaiiCarRental.com or Turo .

$5-a-day tip for housekeepers .

Based on the information outlined above, here are our estimated budgets.

10-night trip, peak summer travel season

$15,090: Four-star beachfront resort, with a 10-day rental car.

$10,447: Three-star hotel, with a 10-minute walk to the beach and a five-day rental car.

$7,781 Low-cost condo within walking distance to the beach, tightly budgeted meals and a five-day rental car.

Seven-night trip, shoulder season

$9,574: Four-star beachfront resort, with a seven-day rental car.

$6,488: Three-star hotel, with a 10-minute walk to the beach and a rental car for two days.

$4,936: Low-cost condo within walking distance to the beach, tightly budgeted meals and a two-day rental car.

Can you beat these numbers? Definitely. Here are tips on how to save on your vacation to Hawaii.

How to cut your Hawaii vacation costs

Stay on the beach or rent a car every day, but don’t do both.

Does your idea of a great vacation involve hitting the open road to explore every corner of the island? Then, don’t pay premium prices for a hotel on the beach.

On the other hand, if your dream trip involves tons of time lounging on the sand and splashing in the pool, don’t pay $55 a day for a rental car plus $68 a day to park it when it’s just going to sit there.

Many Waikiki hotels are within walking distance of a car rental agency, so it’s easy to get a car for just part of your trip. Select “Waikiki” instead of “Honolulu airport” as your pick-up and drop-off location for your rental car. If you pick the car up in the morning, then drop it off at the end of the day, you can save a night’s worth of parking costs, cutting down your trip cost.

The downside to this strategy is you may have to wait in a long line to get your car. So send one adult to pick up the vehicle in the morning while the rest of the crew gets ready for the day. And don’t forget to include airport transfers in your budget. Budget about $37 each way, including tip, for a taxi or rideshare between Waikiki and Honolulu airport.

» Learn more: The cheapest rental car companies

Eat cheaper

If your family of four has a nice dinner at the world-famous Duke’s Waikiki, including cocktails for the adults, an appetizer and a Hula Pie dessert to share, you’ll spend about $225, including taxes and tip. Of course, the beachfront views, tiki torches and aloha spirit might be worth it. But you don’t have to spend that much every night.

Step away from the beach and meals get much cheaper. For example, the outstanding burgers at Cheeseburger in Paradise are about $20, as opposed to the $36 baked fish at Duke’s.

In addition, pizza joints, super-affordable ramen houses, authentic Hawaiian diners such as Rainbow Drive-In, chains such as Denny’s and IHOP and fast-food restaurants including McDonald’s, Burger King and Subway can bring your meal costs down.

Or swing into one of the many ABC Stores to pick up packaged salads, sandwiches, yogurt, snacks, drinks or some spam musubi (a slice of grilled Spam sandwiched between or on top of a block of rice, wrapped in nori) to fill up on the cheap.

More affordable yet, you can buy cereal, coffee, milk, sandwich meats and bread to prepare breakfasts and lunches at your hotel or condo.

» Learn more: Is island hopping in Hawaii worth it?

Consider a condo

You can often find a vacation rental just a few minutes from the beach for much cheaper than you’d pay for a hotel.

For example, we found the condo shown below on Vrbo for 10 nights for $1,942 plus tax, for a total of $2,260. And that’s during peak summer travel.

hawaii round trip for 2

For a seven-day rental during the shoulder season, you can cut your total accommodations expenditure by around $500 by choosing a condo over a hotel.

hawaii round trip for 2

Many condos have kitchens, too, so you could save money by making eggs or pancakes for breakfast, spaghetti for dinner and packing sandwiches for lunches while you’re out and about.

Pay with points and miles

The question “How much is a vacation to Hawaii?” has a much more appealing answer if you pay using airline miles, hotel points or credit card points — which can erase hundreds or even thousands of dollars from your trip cost.

If you want to go to Hawaii

So how much does it cost to go to Hawaii? It can be expensive. Hidden costs like resort fees and exorbitant parking prices can easily break a budget. But there are ways to save on the cost of a vacation to Hawaii.

Traveling before or after the peak summer season can save a considerable amount. In addition, don’t pay a premium to stay on the beach if you won’t take full advantage of that location, and don’t pay up to $68 a night to park a car as you’re splashing around the pool for several days.

To save big, consider a condo where you can cook many of your meals to save on dining. With these simple strategies, your answer to the question “How much is a vacation to Hawaii?” is one that fits your budget.

Top 5 airlines serving from Portland to Hawaii

Japan airlines is excellent. I had a great flight with them, and they are the consummate professionals. I booked my flight through Kayak and they sent it on to Underpricer. That felt really scammy. My Oneworld number would not attach to the reservation and I could not choose a seat. I called Japan Airlines and got one but it was in the back. Later I drove to the airport and worked with the excellent agents there to find a better one. Later that day, I got a phone call from Underpricer trying to upsell me the option of choosing a seat. It felt like a Spirit Airlines level crappy move. The flight itself was exactly as nice as you would expect from JAL. The meal was good and the flight crew was awesome.

Liked the food. Needs improvement: 1) the flat bed was very hard and the set up was not at all passenger friendly 2) the announcement were impossible to understand even in English. 3) the flight information on the monitor was terrible it showed a airplane with no information like altitude, airspeed, heading. You could not zoom in or out to orient the aircraft to where you were in the flight. 4) movies were old and very limited as was the music selection.

This flight was operated by American Airlines. AA was completely unprepared for the crowds at DFW for Spring Break and were ridiculously understaffed. They had only three operating kiosks for self check-in, and ONE agent to handle hundreds (thousands?) of dropped off bags. She also had to do double duty to assist passengers at the kiosks. In comparison, flying on United Airlines at Christmastime was a much smoother experience.

Need new movies, a lots of them are 20-10 years old or older. It us a very long flight we need good entertainment. Please load more new movies!

It was one of the best experiences. The staff were amazing. JAL is my second favorite Asian Carrier I have flown on. Korean Air was my first. Thank you JAL for bringing me home safely and for such an amazing staff and service.

JAL is quite nice in business class. Comfortable, spacious seats. Their entertainment, especially their film selection, isn’t that great though as their are not many new releases like some airlines offer their first and business class customers. . Food is excellent and the option to order on demand is always quite nice, which JAL offers. Flight attendants were very friendly and kind. Overall very good experience with JAL.

Very comfortable unlike my first trip where they switched my flight from JAL to AA which was a disaster!

It was an outstanding flight and service. The only thing is the seat cushion for economy could be a little more comfortable. More cushion.

Comfortable flight since I had the entire row to myself. Food was good too.

I requested a vegetarian meal, and somehow that wasn’t processed from Japan airlines to the new carrier American Airlines when it was on the ticket. Don’t know if that was KAYAK or Japan air or American Airlines. But the crew scrounge together something for me and that was very good. Also I think American has the tiniest seats in the industry. It’s kind of annoying but it got me from .8 point B and now I’m at point B on the final point at LAX. I had to leave the airport and then go back through security to catch my next plane. I’ve never had to do that before. It was very annoying.

Inflight entertainment stopped working as we taxi to runway and never worked again until landing and taxi to gate. Grrrr

Had to run to make it only to have the flight delayed to wait for all the late connectors Second drink service skipped up

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

MSP to Atlanta was much better than Atlanta to St. Kitts. Paid $180 each for myself and wife for Delta comfort from Atlanta to St. Kitts. Seats were more narrow and obviously old and worn out. Tailbone is killing me. Seat would not recline. Seats behind reclined and we were not an exit row or in front of an exit row. Entertainment did not work in that the movie jumped forward and back and there was no audio. The plug in the arm rest was loose. Flight attendant tried “resetting” the video for my seat but no good. She never checked back. Someone else near me had the same issue. Touch screen was unresponsive. No where near as comfortable as MSP to Atlanta flight. 3 plus hrs. flight time without the basic amenities and not even remotely close to comfortable but paid for Comfort plus. I will be very disappointed if I have the same on my return “Comfort Plus” flight St. Kitts to Atlanta. At the very least my wife and I should be refunded for round trip “Comfort Plus” charges. Please feel free to contact me directly for more details.

public website still broken for years randomly blocking browsers with privacy options active after loading a page maybe once. check-in on laptop was almost impossible but eventually randomly worked. had to print pass at airport since couldn't get back in to load digital pass on mobile firefox or chrome. red eye flight so smooth onboarding, plenty of room to spread out, easy offboarding. onboard wifi instructions mention vpn can cause problems connecting but fails to also mention private dns. no printed or built in menu list, seems weird to require personal device to point at qr code link for menu which does not even allow direct ordering. people with health condition risk related dietary restrictions trying to avoid for example cholesterol and sugar are left guessing what they can order either way without nutritional info highlights (cranberry juice was minute maid cocktail with as much suger as typical can of soda). tap to pay wasn't working and always seems sketchy to manually enter card info. good movie variety, so limited tv was okay.

Great experience overall. Check in at Austin was congested as they only have about 6 check in kiosks, one was broken, and there was a lot of Spring Break travelers.

The main person that was coordinating everything was a short white/light skin Spanish man and he was very rude. It honestly made me feel like it was everyone’s First day at work. His announcements were very not reasonable and they did not make sense. The stewardess on the flight that made the announcements she didn’t even know what she was talking about she sounded inebriated. There were no snacks or drinks on our flight there wasn’t even much turbulence. This flight was not enjoyable nor was it what a Delta flight should be and just this past week I flew with Delta 3 times.

The landing was bad and the hostess came two times and i was sleeping but when she served the person that nexts to me I woke up and she didn’t even asked me if I need any drink or snacks two times!!!!

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

All good except paid for wifi that did not work

Left 2 hours later for delayed I had to take care a kid with special need since people don’t want to move to accommodate the rest of the family. . It wasn’t bad but that made me upset that people can be that selfish.

The crew were really great, but the 4 hour delay in small chunks was the worst.

They did get us booked on a later flight, but it made us miss our connecting flight. So, we had to stay and another state overnight with no luggage or clothes. Because they kept our luggage at airport for next flight on the next day.

The leg space between me and the seat in front of me was excellent.

That flight was smooth, and staff we courteous. it was a full flight so very tight. The boarding through security was not properly controlled. it was rushed and the scanning process for our bags, etc. was pilling up at the other end with no time to empty our belonging my personal items almost toppled over on the floor if i hadn't caught it rapidly. Was it just that time, or always like this - cant say. other than that all else was fine.

For a 22 minute flight all you expect is for it to be safe and comfortable

Good movies, iffy pay WiFi, food ok- on time though and that was great!

Some of these FA’s need attitude check. Snarky bitches

Flight was on time. Staff were friendly. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

New ridiculous policy by american destroyed my allegiance to american. As a million miler with american, I expected it would be easy to get on an earlier flight when I got to airport earlier than expected, and save a five hour layover. WRONG. The online app would not let me switch flights, So I called, and was promised a call back in 90 minutes. HAH! The customer service desk at DCA said “we no longer have access to changing a flight on our screens. If the app couldn’t do it, I should send a letter to American, but there’s nothing else possible!”

Same basket of unhealthy prepackaged snacks (junk food) which was depleted by the time it got to my row!!

Lots of weather delays that were poorly communicated and managed. I get there are weather delays but they didn’t make it clear what was happening or comfortable on the plane

Flight attendants had no personality! The looked miserable! My seat was broken in first class. I can’t believe how American Airlines changed. 😞

I am tired of being nickel and dimed for seat location, checked luggage and carry on bags. That is why i rarely fly anymore.

Me and my husband experienced very bad in American Airlines. We missed our flight going to Doha. The American Airlines was delayed we arrived already 10:27pm. Supposed to be 9:40 pm. So what they did they rebooked our flight and they gave us a hotel. When we arrived at the hotel the front desk said it was fully booked already. Oh my gosh! I said why did you accept the booking if it's fully booked. The guy said that's American Airlines they just book even it's already full. That's 2am already, we have nothing to do so, we decided to go another hotel. We pay the room, food and taxi. Pls give an action on this matter. Refund our expenses and give us more compensation. Not only our room, food, taxi but also our efforts, tiredness looking for a room that can accommodate us.

pleased with overall experienced, but seats in coach are tight.

Flight delayed, boarding time kept changing, not good. Nee firm information given each time.

Food choice is limited, entertainment better than average, seat leg room terrible

Horrible. Flight was delayed and very bumpy. I was super unhappy

Terrible quality wifi and they charge a lot for it. They nickel and dime you for everything.

Not happy with Air Canada . Flight was cancelled got the run around trying to get another flight that was direct none to be found ended up going to Denver then onto Austin adding 7 hours to our trip. Was travelling with some one who had walking issues that’s why we were happy to have a direct flight then it didn’t happen adding more stress on her

I wish there had been more seat options...when I tried to book, there were only.middle seats available. Do travel agents get first pick??

As is pretty much the norm with Air Canada now, we left late from the gate (45 minutes late). This is my 12th flight with AC in the last 12 months and 10 of those flights were either late or cancelled. AC essentially has a monopoly in Canada so they have carte blanche to charge exorbitant rates now and give poor service, with no repercussions.

A 2 hour delay because they couldn’t fit some oversized cargo in the small hold doors of an Embraer! Surely they know the sizes before attempting to load it?

It took 5 hour to get a crew to D Ice the plan. We had to sit on the runway for 5 hrs. in Calgary. It snows most of the winter. No proactive plan. In addition, after 3 calls to customer service they couldn't figure out how to have my wife and myself sit together on her birthday weekend. Everybody kept passing the buck. No decision from customer service, luggage drop off or check in team. The experience was a complete mess! I don't think we'll ever fly on this airline again.

When we got to the airport for our flight from Chicago to Montreal which was scheduled for 2.00 p.m. they had no record of it and booked us on a flight at 3.30 very disappointing . We also had to pay 50.00 each for a seat. All things considered ,I will never book thru Kayak again. Next time I will only book directly thru Air Canada no second party booking Sue

-kayak did not give me advanced notice to my e-mail for my flight and I had major trouble finding the code to access Air Canada’s site because you did not provide it to me and incompetent Air Canada did not have any access based on my name alone. WTF -The flight was delayed twice. -They moved the boarding area -They said I would give free checked baggage because the plane was full and they charged me over $30 -They didn’t get my luggage on to the plane and left without it and I’m heading to a cruise ship. -I have lost one FULL day of my limited holiday and had to cancel scheduled events because my luggage did not get on the plane (even though the plane was delayed). -The “wheresmyluggage.com site is a total incompetent disaster that caused additional stress. -I will be sharing this experience

Plane was a Rouge vacation flyer for some reason. No legroom and entertainment. People were desperately looking for USB ports and such. And then there is this notorious and unsolved space problem where not all carry-on fits in the cabin….

The wifi I paid for did not work. The seats are tight.
