‘In this world of chaos, nature is our only respite…’

When such words resonate, the true meaning of wildlife and natural habitats come to life. Silent Valley National Park in Palakkad District, Kerala is one such living example of all things beautiful and all things created in this magnificent state. The eerie silence crooning across the corners of this tropical rainforest is one that you may never have imagined. The silence is broken with the chirping of the birds that take you out of your reverie.

#Trivia- It was named a national park only in 1984.

History of Silent Valley National Park

A quaint small space that gained significance because of its evergreen rainforests, and probably the only ones remaining in the country today, Silent Valley gets its name from missing Cicadas that emphasize their presence in the valley.

Many centuries ago, it is believed that, this forest served as a shelter to Sairandhiri (known as Draupadi in Hindu Mythology) and her five husbands (the Pandavas) while escaping from the cruel clutches of their cousins - the Kauravas, in the epic Mahabharata. It is believed that they hid in the realms of this expansive forest where Draupadi disguised herself as Sairandhiri, becoming the maid to a queen named Sudeshna, while living in exile with her family. Hence, it got the name Sairandhrivanam.

It is also believed that the Kunthipuzzha River was named after Kunthi, the mother of the Pandavas. It provides water to the entire forest area.

The British Influence …

It is believed that this gorgeous Western Ghat forest was first explored by a British botanist named Robert Wight in 1857. The Britishers named the place Silent Valley because of the missing sounds of the Cicadas.

#Trivia: Cicadas are noisy creatures that make an unmissable shrill droning sound or noise by vibrating two membranes on their abdomen. This valley supposedly did not have their presence, hence the name.

With many theories that have evolved over the years, Silent Valley National Park in Kerala holds a significant place in the state's vast biosphere.

As it stands today…

Silent Valley National Park in Kerala is protected by the Mannarkkad Plains to the South and the Nigiri Plateau to the North. It is located in the core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. It is part of the Nilgiri sub-cluster that comprises more than 6000 sq. km. Western Ghats World Heritage Site, recognized by UNESCO in 2007.

Such is the significance of this last undisturbed South Western Ghats mountain rain forest that boasts of exquisite flora and fauna and expansive vegetation.

From the unending green escapade that captures your heart, to an ecosystem that has stood the test of time, Silent Valley is truly one-of-a-kind. This tropical evergreen wet jungle in India is home to many beautiful species of animals that serve as a reminder of all things God created so stunning and quaint.

#Trivia- The people’s movement to prevent the construction of a dam and a hydroelectric project in the very premise of The Silent Valley National Park was a first significant milestone that garnered the attention of National and International Environmentalists to the forest and eventual intervention from a Prime Minister.

Although it is small in size, the national park has a much bigger impact on the core ecosystem of the Nilgiri Biosphere and the entire state of Kerala. It is said to be one of the last tropical evergreen forests remaining in the Western Ghats. The destruction or even a slight imbalance in the ecosystem would spiral the biosphere downward, creating a bigger disaster.

#Trivia- The Silent Valley National Park is home to the second most threatened Monkey in the world- The Lion-tailed Macaque. Since the population lives and thrives in this particular evergreen forest, their existence needs to be protected and hence every type of deforestation effort or power project is fiercely fought for every time.

Traveller Reviews Of Silent Valley National Park

Flora And Fauna Of Silent Valley National Park

Image Source No information about Silent Valley is complete without a mention of what it’s past visitors felt about their experience here. Which is why, we’ve put down experiences of some

1. Shihab says: “It’s an entry to another world! In this modern busy era it’s a really good place to refresh the mind and soul. Had heard and read a lot about this place, but now got lucky to be here. Everyone who loves nature must visit this place!”

2. Shankar says: “An out of the world experience! A five hour excursion where one gets away from the noise, dust, and disturbances of our everyday lives. Our group of 5 were given a Jeep with Lajju as our forest guide. 3 hours of driving up and down a narrow forest path, bumpy most of the way and still craving for more – that is the journey from the SVNP office at Mannarkad to the Sairandhri watchtower. We saw a Giant Malabar Squirrel and the Lion Tailed Macaques on a humid Monday. While one group of adult Macaques were aloof and seemed to be camera shy, a second group of young kids were more playful, jumping around and coming close to where we could see and photograph them. These apart, thick green tree cover, colorful butterflies and flowers and rain fed streams made us ignore the bumpy ride. Though I didn’t climb the 100 feet watchtower, my wife and kids told me that the view of the forest and the Kunti river from up there were great. I opted out of the two hour, 3 km trek to the Kunti river but my family said that it was great, especially when it started raining very heavily. All praises to the forest guard! The Jeep driver, the Kerala forest officials at the top, and the people at the reception were absolutely helpful and friendly. Would definitely love to go back!”

3. Alex says: “The Silent Valley National Park is a unique and precious piece of geography in India. We were fortunate to see a rich variety of trees, plants and animals, that included, the Lion Tailed Macaques (sometimes fierce, and sometimes sleepy), large slithering snakes, a dozen Malabar Giant Squirrels, a variety of beautiful birds, particularly a darter that flew ‘pilot’ ahead of our Jeep, as if desirous of leading us safely through the densest of forests; Large mushrooms, lizards, butterflies, moths, eagles, woodpeckers – other multi-hued birds added to the spectacular experience. What makes Silent Valley unique? From the beginning of time this 90 square km area of tropical evergreen forest was never populated nor trod upon by man. Now, it offers sights of pristine natural beauty to the present generation.”

Silent Valley National Park

The Silent Valley National Park, one of Kerala’s best kept Secrets is a unique preserve of natural rain forests. Silent Valley is the rarest and precious protected area in the world. The journey to Silent Valley is a pilgrimage to nature.

The National park stretches over an area of 9000 hectors. The Kunthi River originating from Neelagiri flows silently through the valley. It drains the entire 15 Km length of the valley from north to south into the Bharathapuzha. Kuntipuzha is one of the less torrential rivers of the Western Ghats, with a pesticide-free catchment area.

You can view all the National Parks of Kerala here

The area is locally known as “ Sairandhrivanam ” literally Sairandhri’s Forest (Sairandhri is Draupadi the wife of 5 Pandavas).

Silent Valley National Park

The park is completely enclosed by a ring of hills and hence Silent Valley has its own micro climate.

Silent Valley is one of the largest tracks of rainforest in Asia. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers, researchers and gutsy trekkers. View from watch tower at Sairandhiri is panoramic and the entire valley below appears to be a wavy green enormous carpet.

There are lots of trekking trails inside the park but not all are easily accessible.

Travel Tips

  • Visiting here is not as simple as we think! You need to get prior permission from the forest department in Mukali on paying entry fee.
  • At Mannarghat there is a PWD Rest House for which the reservation authority is the District Collector, Palakkad. There are also many small lodges.
  • You have to take a guide who knows the park very well with you.
  • Always stay with the group.
  • Smoking is prohibited in the park.
  • Try to switch of your mobile.
  • Keep quiet if you really want to improve your chances for seeing wild animals.
  • Remember that animals are ultrasensitive to sound, odour and color. Clothing should be in neutral colours that blend with nature.
  • Avoid heavy perfumes and deodorants.
  • Liquor, loud music and littering are not allowed.
  • Plastic carry bags and plastic bottles are not allowed inside the park. Stick to cloth bags or rucksacks.
  • Take your camera along for some cool clicks.
  • There is no other private lodging facility available anywhere nearby. Hence it is best to book / plan your accommodation in advance.
  • Also one of the important facts to be remembered is about the LEECH (Atta in Malayalam) it would be in huge numbers from start of the forest. We should be very careful with them as they would easily get in to our foot and we may not feel their bite, but it will suck our blood without our knowledge and become a huge leech within seconds. To avoid this, visitors are instructed to apply Powdered Salts over their foot / legs. Leech proof socks and comfortable hiking boots would be a good option.

Tourist Destination - Silent Valley

Silent-Valley-National-ParkThe park is one of the last undisturbed tracts of the southwestern ghats and tropical moist evergreen forest in the country. It is contiguous with the proposed Karimpuzha National Park (225 km²) to the north and Mukurthi National Park (78.46 km²) to the north-east.

Plans for a hydroelectric project that threatened the park’s high diversity of wildlife stimulated an Environmentalist Social Movement in the 1970s called Save Silent Valley which subsequently resulted in a cancellation of the project and creation of the park in 1980.

The original name is said to have been ‘Sairandhrivanam’ in local parlance meaning Sairandhri's Forest. As per a prevailing Hindu legend, Panchali or Draupadi, the polyandrous wife of the five Pandava kings, disguised herself as queen Sudeshna's maid Sairandhri, while they were staying in exile. Myth has it that the Pandava brothers, deprived of their kingdom, set out on a thirteen-year Silent Valley national dark exile. It’s believed that they wandered down south, into what is now Kerala, until one day they came upon a magical valley where rolling grasslands met wooded ravines, a deep green river bubbled its course through the impenetrable forest, where at dawn and twilight the tiger and elephant would drink together at the water's edge, where all was harmonious and man unknown. The Pandavas along with their wife are said to have camped beside the river, in a cave on a hill slope.

Nomenclature

Going by documented records, British botanist Robert Wight had done an investigation of the watersheds in this area way back in 1847. Later on the British named the area Silent Valley because of a perceived absence of the noisy Cicadas usually found in dense forests. Another story attributes the name to the anglicization of Sairandhri.

Save Silent Valley

‘Save Silent Valley’ was a social movement initiated in 1973, aimed at the protecting the evergreen tropical reserve forest of Silent Valley, to save the prime biosphere from being flooded by a hydroelectric project.

Silent Valley national park The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had decided to implement the Silent Valley Hydro-Electric Project (SVHEP) centered on a dam across the Kunthipuzha River in 1973. Following KSEB’s announcement of its plan to begin dam construction, a lot of trees were felled in the area around that time. The area thus became the focal point of ‘Save Silent Valley’, triggering India's fiercest environmental debate of the decade. The main concern was about the endangered species, the lion-tailed macaque, which brought public attention involving environmentalists, writers and activists from other states to raise campaigns against the issue.

In 1977 the Kerala Forest Research Institute carried out an ecological impact study of the Silent Valley area and proposed that the area is declared a Biosphere Reserve. Eventually, in 1979 the Kerala Government passed a legislation regarding the Silent Valley Protection Area (under Protection of Ecological balance Act of 1979) and issued a notification declaring the exclusion of the Hydroelectric Project Area from the proposed National Park.

Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishath (KSSP) effectively aroused public opinion on Silent Valley national park the requirement to save the destination, publishing assessment report on the project. Poet-activist Sugathakumari played a pivotal role in the silent valley protest and her poem ‘Marathinu Stuthi’ (Ode to a Tree) became a symbol for the protest from the intellectual community and was the opening song/prayer of most of the ‘save the Silent Valley’ campaign meetings. A writ petition was filed before Kerala High Court, against the clear-cutting of forests in the Hydroelectric Project area and the Court followed it up by passing an order to stop tree felling. Eminent personalities who visited the place and staged their protest against the hydroelectric project include ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, agricultural scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, writers and others. Dr. Swaminathan had suggested that the Valley be made into a national rainforest biosphere reserve to prevent gene erosion.

On September 7, 1985, the Silent Valley National Park was formally inaugurated and a memorial at Sairandhri to Smty. Indira Gandhi was unveiled by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. On September 1, 1986, Silent Valley National Park was designated as the core area of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Since then, a long-term conservation effort has been undertaken to preserve the Silent Valley ecosystem.

Union Minister of Forest and Environment Jairam Ramesh and Kerala Forest Minister Binoy Viswam inaugurated the silver jubilee celebration of Silent Valley National Park on Nov.21, 2009.

Silent Valley gets copious amounts of rainfall during the monsoons, but the Silent Valley national park actual amount varies within the region due to its varied topography. In general, the rainfall is higher at higher altitude and decreases from the west to east due to the rain shadow effect. Eighty percent of the rainfall occurs during the south-west monsoon between June and September. It also receives a significant amount of rainfall during the north-east monsoon between October and November. The mean annual temperature is 20.2 °C. The hottest months are April and May when the mean temperature is 23 °C and the coolest months are January and February when the mean temperature is 18o C.

The most abundant bird here is the black bulbul.

The threatened ones include Nilgiri wood-pigeon, Malabar Parakeet, Malabar grey hornbill, white-bellied treepie, grey-headed bulbul, broad-tailed grassbird, Rufous Babbler, Wynaad laughing thrush, Nilgiri laughing thrush, white-bellied shortwing, Black-and-rufous flycatcher, Nilgiri flycatcher, white-bellied blue-flycatcher, Crimson-backed Sunbird and Nilgiri Pipit.

Hundreds of species of butterflies and moths besides some twenty-five rare species of frogs are also found here.

The flora of the Valley includes about nearly 1000 species of flowering plants, 108species of orchids, 100 ferns and fern allies, 200 liverworts, 75 lichens and about 200 algae. A majority of these plants are endemic to the Western Ghats.

Getting there

Vehicular transport is allowed only up to Mukkali, nearly 24 km from the Park. The rest of the way has to be covered on foot up to the source of the river Kunthipuzha which flows through the valley before merging into the River Nila of Bharathapuzha, the longest in Kerala and considered to be the life force of the state.

Nearest bus station: Mannarkkad (32 km)

Nearest railway line: Olavakkode (75 km)

Nearest airport: Coimbatore (115 km)

Awaiting a bright future

‘Only An Axe Away’ is a well-researched documentary film on the struggle to preserve Silent Valley. The film reflects the anxiety of the people of Kerala about the future of the National Park. It’s up to the citizens from varied walks of life to put in their concerted efforts to preserve the environment in all its biodiversity and ensure that the rich ecozone remains intact for the benefit of the future generations.

Silent Valley

Silent Valley is apparently the last immaculate region of tropical evergreen forest that has fortunately been preserved intact till date. The Silent Valley ecosystem, acclaimed as one of the world’s richest biodiversity hotspots, spreads over 8, 952 hectares of forestland on the Nilgiris plateau and is enclosed by mountains, some of which rise up to an altitude of more than 2000 meters. An “ecological island” with a comparatively uninterrupted evolutionary history that dates back to at least 50 million years is perceptible in its optimal degree of flora and fauna here.  Silent Valley National Park constitutes the nucleus of the Nilgiri International Biosphere Reserve, besides being an ingredient of the Western Ghats World Heritage Site under apprehension by UNESCO. And, it boasts of its very many pristine valleys, infinite grasslands, winding hills, never-ending rivers, undulating slopes, flourishing greenery and the dense forests. The park is acknowledged as the only one of its kind, known for the distinctive herbs and flora, and of course goes without saying the characteristic wildlife that delight in their habitat. Enclosed on all sides by Reserve forests and other forest divisions, the Silent Valley Park is a haven for any wildlife adventurist and is rightly quoted as “Sairandhrivanam” meaning ‘the forest in the valley’. Rare and new-fangled biological species continue to be discovered from this unique National Park even today.

  • Respect nature: Follow the marked trails and do not disturb the flora and fauna. Do not litter and leave no trace of your visit. Respect the park’s regulations and maintain its pristine beauty for others to enjoy.
  • Be prepared for changing weather: The weather in Silent Valley can be unpredictable. Carry rain protection gear, such as a waterproof jacket, and be prepared for sudden changes in temperature. It is advisable to check the weather forecast before your hike.
  • Start early: Begin your hike early in the day to make the most of the cooler morning temperatures and to allow for ample time to complete the trail. It also increases your chances of spotting wildlife and enjoying the serenity of the park before the crowds arrive.
  • Inform someone about your plans: Before setting out on your hike, inform a trusted friend or family member about your plans. Share your itinerary, expected time of return, and emergency contact details. This ensures that someone is aware of your whereabouts and can seek help if needed.
  • Respect the wildlife: While it is exciting to encounter wildlife during your hike, maintain a safe distance and avoid feeding or disturbing the animals. Wildlife should be observed from a distance to prevent any harm to both you and the animals.
  • Stay hydrated and take breaks: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the hike, especially in the warm weather. Take regular breaks to rest, enjoy the surroundings, and listen to the sounds of nature.
  • Be aware of your fitness level and limitations: Choose a hiking trail that aligns with your fitness level and abilities. Be honest with yourself about your limitations and don’t push beyond what you can comfortably handle. Remember, hiking should be an enjoyable experience, not a strenuous task.

Silent Valley National Park

Silent Valley National Park (40 km northwest of Mannarkkad) The 89.52 sq.km national park is believed to be the sole surviving bit of evergreen forest in the Sahya Ranges. The peculiarity of the Silent Valley Forest is that it is even devoid of the chirping of cicadas’. Vehicular transport is possible only up to Mukkali, nearly 24 km from the park.

The rest of the way has to be covered by foot, up to the source of Kunthipuzha, which flows through the valley before merging into the Bharathapuzha River. The closest to a virgin forest in the entire Western Ghats, the Silent Valley National Park is home to India’s last substantial stretch of tropical evergreen forests. It’s difficult terrain and remoteness shelters a large number of wild animals. Permitting authority: Asst. Wildlife Warden, Silent Valley National Park, Mukkali. Ph: 04924253225 / 8589895652

About Silent Valley

Silent Valley National park  in Kerala is one of the last remaining still preserved bio diverse region not just in India but world. It is now a protected National park spanning an are of almost 240 square kilometers. Park is composed of evergreen forests and is surrounded by the Kunti River. The National Park provides spectacular views of the Kundali hills which can be found at the Western Ghats.

Story goes that it was called Silent Valley because when it was discovered by Robert Eight the British botanist, apparently due to the fact there were no noisy Cicadas found here. Other stories from longer ago tell the story of Sairandhri, an Hindu queen, spending some 14 years here in exile. Not a bad place to spend 14 years, the valley and surrounding areas have a lot to recommend them. Not least the fact they’ve been invited to apply for membership of UNESCO as a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

The valley is home to large populations of endangered species, and is also an extremely bio diverse place because of the forested hills and rich valleys.  World's  largest population of lion-tailed macaques is found here.

Best place for accommodation in the nearby town of Mukkali and Palakkad is another option . There is an Ayurveda resort nearby at Perinthalmanna. Camping inside national park is not allowed even with prior organization, and if you’re intending to do any trekking within the park it is essential to hire one of the park guides. Visitors without a guide are not allowed.

The park is heavily ‘eco’ focused and has an ‘eco’ shop, stocking indigenous tribal artefacts, (not to be found elsewhere!), as well as some more traditional gifts and supplies. Silent Valley is only 60 Kms from Coimbatore and 190 Kms from Ernakulam. An alternate name for it is “Sairandhrivanam”, after Sairandhiri which is the secret identity of Draupadi, who was the wife of the Pandavas. Legend dictates that the Pandavas had taken shelter here.

For those wanting to spend longer, it’s possible to pay for an overnight expedition for 1 to 3 nights. This can be organized from the website, and should be planned some time before travel to the area. Visitors to the valley should not miss out on the views from the watch tower and museum. Offering magnificent views of the park from up a flight of 300 steps, it’s possible to spot many animals, trees, people and features from this vantage point and it should not be missed.

Tourist can take an elephant safari to explore the park and can admire the view of the forests from the watchtowers.

Formation of Silent Valley National park

A widespread protest movement had given birth to the National Park. During the 1950s the state government had taken up the agenda of constructing a dam across the river Kunti to generate electricity. However, keeping in mind, the extent of damage such a project would cause to the environment many Keralites and environmentalists all over the country started to protest against this decision with the help of the media. Indira Gandhi, who had been the Prime Minister during this time also approved of this protest. This led to the setting up of the Silent Valley National Park in 1984.

Built to gather water from the Mourne Mountains and supply it to Belfast and County Down, the Silent Valley Reservoir is one of Northern Ireland's most spectacular attractions.

Ringed by the Mourne Mountains , the Silent Valley Reservoir and nearby Ben Crom Reservoir are among the stand-out experiences of the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and UNESCO Global Geopark . This landscape is dramatic and atmospheric, with jagged mountains rising out of the sea, and rock formations creating images of hags and giants.

No wonder CS Lewis, a Belfast man, frequented this area, often getting inspiration for Narnia in places such as the Pot of Legawherry, Buzzard’s Roost, Devil’s Coach Road or Lamagan Slabs. The names, and the terrain, will have impressed and inspired the great storyteller. The atmosphere too: when the wind blows in these parts you’ll swear you can hear some distant ethereal howling. The whole place seems to have tumbled out of a fairytale.

The Silent Valley in the Mourne Mountains

L-R: The Mourne Wall; wildflowers on the banks of the Silent Valley Reservoir; the Silent Valley Reservoir; the Mourne Mountains

A curious stone construction encloses the reservoirs of Silent Valley and Ben Crom – a dry-stone granite wall that extends some 35km across 15 summits. This is the Mourne Wall, which stands 1.5 metres in height and reaches to the top of the highest peak in Northern Ireland , Slieve Donard. In days gone by this mountain view supported an entire postcard industry; today it’s an Instagram favourite,

You can find out about the wall – or “the black ditch of Mourne” as it was called by those who constructed it back in the early 1900s – at the Silent Valley Mountain Park Visitor Centre. It was put there by the water supply company, quite simply, to keep livestock away from the water. Today, with sophisticated purification measures, that original purpose has expired; but the wall, crafted from granite using traditional dry-stone walling techniques, remains.

silent-valley-inset1

Ben Crom Reservoir, County Down

The Silent Valley Visitor Centre stands at the southerly end of the reservoir. But you’ll need to tear your eyes away from the awesome view for a few minutes to see an exhibition that gives you the lowdown on this place.

Within the centre the historical details of the whole Silent Valley project are laid out in imaginative fashion. There’s a replica of a section of the Binian Tunnel, a key part of the whole enterprise, built from 1949 to 1958 to carry water from the Annalong River to the Silent Valley

The settlement of Watertown sprung up to accommodate the many engineers and labourers involved in the original building work. The “town” at its peak, was home to around 600-700 engineers and labourers who built the reservoirs and the Mourne Wall.   Fact fans will be interested to learn that the town had its own cinema, hospital and police station – and may have been the very first place in Ireland to have been lit by street lamps.

At one time it would have been muddy and cheerless. Today the walk down from the reservoir is lined with rowan, ash, and oak, and in the spring the meadows are alive with bluebells and celandine. One of the former houses has been refurbished and opened to give a comprehensive idea of what life was like for these workers in the early 20th century.

The visitor centre will also give you an overview of the wildlife that calls this place home. Red kites and kestrels miss nothing as they gaze around the terrain hoping to spot a likely snack; ravens tumble through the sky showing off their aeronautic skills; and if you’re lucky, you might spot the world’s fastest animal. The peregrine falcon, which nests on cliffs throughout the area, catches its lunch by dive-bombing on top of it from several hundred feet up in the sky. If a peregrine is only doing 120km then it’s dawdling along. More pastorally, in spring the larks sing their chorus high in the sky above the heather, and wheatears skip from rock to rock.

Walking in the Mourne Mountains, County Down

Within the Silent Valley Mountain Park several trails crisscross the mountains, woodland and parkland. The Ben Crom Dam Walk, some 10km, takes you to the Ben Crom Reservoir, passing the exit of the Binian Tunnel. The Brandy Pad skirts both reservoirs. This old smugglers' trail starts at the Bloody Bridge – the scene of an ancient battle, as you’ve probably guessed – overlooking the Irish Sea. The trail heads up through Poulaphouca, the Glen of the Fairies, onwards to the Hare's Gap and the slopes of Slievenaglogh. Along this path shepherds have trudged, rebels and outlaws on the lam have scarpered, and smugglers have plied their trade.

North of Ben Crom, just off the Brandy Pad, are the Diamond Rocks. Look out here for “Mourne diamonds”: beautiful pieces of smoky quartz and black mica crystals set deep in the granite. Any small crevice in the rock may yield this treasure. Impressive, glittering, but alas worthless in monetary value. The time spent in the Silent Valley, however… that’s priceless.

Need to know: Silent Valley Reservoir

The reservoir grounds are open daily from 10am-6pm (10am-4pm from November to March).

There is an admission charge of £5 per car and £1.60 per pedestrian and you can pay by cash or card (contactless payment is in operation).

The onsite visitor centre at Silent Valley Mountain Park has exhibitions and interactive displays about the history, geology and ecology of the region.

You’ll find a café close to the car park where you can refuel with tasty homemade treats .

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead.

Camping is not permitted in the Silent Valley.
