Introduction

Maho Beach, located in the Dutch territory of Sint Maarten, is a world-famous beach that has gained popularity for its unique and thrilling experience. What sets Maho Beach apart from other beaches is its close proximity to the Princess Juliana International Airport. This means that beachgoers can experience the exhilarating sight and sound of low-flying planes as they come in for landing just a few meters above the beach.

Visiting Maho Beach has become a bucket-list item for many travelers, especially cruise passengers who have a limited amount of time on the island. If you’re planning a cruise and want to know how to get to Maho Beach from the cruise port, we’ve got you covered. In this article, we will explore different transportation options that will take you to this one-of-a-kind beach.

Whether you’re seeking a thrilling adventure, a unique photo opportunity, or simply want to soak up the sun on a beautiful beach, Maho Beach is the perfect destination for you. So get ready to witness the ultimate beach experience as we guide you through the process of getting to Maho Beach from the cruise port.

Getting to the Cruise Port

Before you can embark on your journey to Maho Beach, you’ll first need to get to the cruise port. Located on the island of Sint Maarten, the main cruise port is the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise & Cargo Facility in the capital city of Philipsburg. Here are a few transportation options to consider:

  • Option 1: Taxi: Taking a taxi is one of the most convenient ways to get to the cruise port. Taxis are readily available outside the airport and in various locations around the island. The journey from the airport to the cruise port typically takes around 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
  • Option 2: Public Transportation: Sint Maarten has a public transportation system that includes buses and vans known as “publicos.” While public transportation is more affordable than taxis, it may not be as reliable or offer direct routes to the cruise port. It’s best to check the bus schedules and routes in advance to plan your journey accordingly.
  • Option 3: Rental Car: If you prefer the freedom and flexibility of having your own transportation, you may consider renting a car. Several car rental companies operate on the island, and you can easily book a car in advance or at the airport. Keep in mind that driving in Sint Maarten follows the right-hand traffic system.

Once you arrive at the cruise port, make sure to check the departure location of your specific cruise ship. Each ship is assigned a designated terminal, which will be indicated on your cruise itinerary or by port officials. Be sure to allow plenty of time to check-in and go through security before your ship sets sail.

Now that you know how to get to the cruise port, it’s time to start your adventure to Maho Beach. Let’s explore the different options for reaching this iconic beach and experiencing the thrill of the planes soaring just overhead.

Option 1: Taxi

Taking a taxi is a convenient and hassle-free option for getting to Maho Beach from the cruise port. Taxis are readily available at the port, and you can easily find them lined up outside the terminal. Here’s what you need to know:

First, it’s important to negotiate the fare with the taxi driver before getting in. While taxis in Sint Maarten generally operate on a metered system, it’s always a good idea to confirm the fare to avoid any surprises.

The ride from the cruise port to Maho Beach is relatively short, typically taking around 15-20 minutes depending on traffic conditions. During the journey, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the island as you make your way to the beach.

Upon arrival at Maho Beach, the taxi driver will drop you off at the designated taxi drop-off point. From there, you can easily access the beach and start your adventure.

When it’s time to leave Maho Beach and return to the cruise port, you can either flag down a taxi from the pick-up area or ask one of the nearby beach bars or hotels to call a taxi for you.

It’s worth noting that taxi fares can vary depending on factors such as time of day, number of passengers, and specific destinations. It’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand to pay for the taxi fare, as some drivers may not accept credit cards.

Taxis in Sint Maarten are generally safe and reliable, and the drivers are knowledgeable about the island and its attractions. If you have any questions or need recommendations for other places to visit, don’t hesitate to ask your taxi driver.

Overall, taking a taxi is a convenient and efficient way to get to Maho Beach from the cruise port. It allows you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride while leaving the navigation and transportation to the experts. So consider this option if you’re looking for a stress-free journey to this world-famous beach.

Option 2: Public Transportation

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option to get to Maho Beach from the cruise port, public transportation is worth considering. Sint Maarten has a public transportation system that includes buses and vans known as “publicos.” Here’s what you need to know:

Firstly, it’s important to note that the public transportation system in Sint Maarten may not offer direct routes to Maho Beach. However, you can still reach the beach by taking a combination of buses or publicos.

To start your journey, you’ll need to walk from the cruise port to the nearest bus stop or publico stand. These are usually located within a reasonable walking distance, but it’s always a good idea to ask for directions or check with port officials for the exact location.

Once you’ve reached the bus stop or publico stand, you’ll need to wait for the appropriate bus or publico that will take you to Maho Beach. It’s important to note that bus schedules and routes may vary, so it’s best to check the timings in advance or ask locals for information.

The journey to Maho Beach by public transportation may take longer compared to other options, as you’ll need to make transfers and potentially wait for the next bus or publico. However, this can also give you the opportunity to explore more of the island and experience local life.

When you arrive at Maho Beach, you’ll be dropped off at the nearest public transportation stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the beach, where you can start enjoying the unique experience of watching planes land just above your head.

When it’s time to leave Maho Beach and head back to the cruise port, you’ll need to follow the same process in reverse. Look for the nearest bus or publico stop and wait for the appropriate transportation to take you back to the port.

Public transportation is an affordable and authentic way to experience the island of Sint Maarten. However, it’s important to keep in mind that schedules may be less frequent, and the journey may take longer compared to other options. If you’re comfortable with some flexibility and adventure, public transportation can be a great choice to get to Maho Beach from the cruise port.

Option 3: Rental Car

If you prefer the freedom and flexibility of having your own transportation, renting a car is an excellent option for getting to Maho Beach from the cruise port. Here’s what you need to know:

Several car rental companies operate on the island of Sint Maarten, and you can easily rent a car at the cruise port or arrange for a pick-up at your preferred location. It’s recommended to book your rental car in advance to ensure availability.

Once you have your rental car, getting to Maho Beach is fairly straightforward. From the cruise port, you’ll exit onto the main road and follow the signs or directions to Maho Beach. The journey typically takes around 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Driving in Sint Maarten follows the right-hand traffic system, so it’s essential to familiarize yourself with local driving regulations and be aware of any specific road rules. Keep in mind that roads in Sint Maarten can be narrow and winding, so exercise caution and drive at a moderate speed.

When you arrive at Maho Beach, there are parking options available where you can safely leave your rental car. Be sure to adhere to any parking regulations and avoid parking in restricted areas.

Having a rental car gives you the freedom to explore beyond Maho Beach, allowing you to visit other attractions and scenic spots on the island. It’s worth noting that some car rental companies offer GPS devices or mobile apps to help you navigate the island more easily.

When it’s time to return to the cruise port, simply drive back along the same route. Just be mindful of the time to ensure you arrive at the cruise port before your ship’s departure.

While renting a car offers convenience and independence, it’s essential to consider parking availability, traffic conditions, and the cost of renting a car. Additionally, be sure to have a valid driver’s license and necessary insurance coverage when renting a car in Sint Maarten.

Overall, renting a car provides a convenient and flexible option to get to Maho Beach from the cruise port. It allows you to explore the island at your own pace and make the most of your time on Sint Maarten.

St Maarten Cruise Port to Maho Beach • A Day Trip to the Airplane Beach

How to get from St Maarten cruise port to Maho Beach in one day.

The Airplane Beach in St Maarten is not what I was expecting. I had previously had an image of a fairly peaceful wide open white sandy paradise with crystal clear water, palm trees, and every now and again, an airplane zooming low overhead. That was very silly of me. There was indeed white sand and crystal clear water, but Maho Beach is also one of the most-visited beaches in St Maarten, mainly due to the fact that it’s built directly next to the runway of Princess Juliana International Airport. It is narrow, generally extremely crowded (especially when there are lots of cruise ships in port), and there are plenty of tacky bars offering neon-coloured cocktails, beers, and baskets of fries and chicken wings. You might have already sensed from my description that this beach is not my normal kind of place.

(But it’s still pretty fun to be in the sea when a plane comes in to land.)

How to get from St Maarten cruise port to Maho Beach

St Maarten’s cruise port is in the capital city- Philipsburg – which has space for a whole load of cruise ships to dock at once. This island is an extremely popular stopping point for cruise ships, and whenever we ported here there were at least three other ships parked up at the same time, although none of them were anywhere near full capacity. When we left the ship that morning the sky was overcast and there was drizzle all around; but the weather in the Caribbean can change in a matter of minutes. Rainclouds rarely stick around for long, and we were confident that by the time we reached the airplane beach it would have passed.

If you want to save time, you might want to pre-book your excursion from St Maarten cruise port to Maho Beach. C heck out this tour , which involves a stop on the airplane beach as well as the beautiful Orient Bay on the French side of the island. Alternatively, here is a round-trip tour only between St Maarten cruise port and Maho Beach.

The best way to get from St Maarten cruise port to Maho Beach without a pre-booked excursion, is to take a taxi. The journey is way too long to walk, and costs around $15-20 per person depending on how many are in the car. Leave the piers and head to the right, where there’s a row of taxis waiting to leave. These taxis are more like minivans, and it’s likely that you’ll share a ride with other passengers or crew in order to fill up the vehicle.

Unlike the not-so-long-ago days of haggling a price with your taxi driver, prices are set, and after paying for your return taxi, you’ll be given a wrist band in the style of a package holiday. This is your ticket to the beach and back; the taxi will drop you in the car park close to Maho Beach, and taxi vans regularly take passengers back from the exact same spot.

walking on Maho Beach in St Maarten

Although the distance between St Maarten cruise port and the Airplane Beach isn’t particularly far, there is almost always traffic to contend with. The journey should only take about 20 minutes, but we spent almost double that crawling along in a long line of cars. Having sat in many a hot sticky vehicle on other Caribbean islands like the Dominican Republic or Antigua , I was expecting an uncomfortable journey, but considering the length of time we spent sat inside a vehicle that morning, it was surprisingly ok.

Alternatively you can catch a water taxi from inside the cruise port, which is slightly more expensive. Or walk into Philipsburg and catch a local bus heading to Maho Beach.

Where to eat and drink at Maho Beach

There are several options for eating and drinking at Maho Beach, and when we arrived the bars and restaurants were packed full of mostly American tourists who had been sheltering from the rain. This is clearly a popular holiday destination, whether for people travelling only to Sint Maarten, or cruise passengers and crew like me and my pal Rachel; but I was still surprised by how Americanised the whole place felt. I’d really been expecting a Dutch island. Especially considering all the cheese shops we’d passed en route in the taxi.

The restaurants and bars are huddled at opposite ends of Maho Beach, although the entire thing is so small that it only takes about ten minutes to walk from one end to the other.

(At the end nearest the car park is also, FYI, a public bathroom. Good to know, ya know.)

Hungry and thirsty when we arrived, we sat on the covered decking of the Sunset Beach Bar (check out their live webcam of the planes landing if you’re curious), and ordered fries and drinks. There were so many people that the waitstaff were ran off their feet, carrying gigantic trays from table to table and struggling to keep up with all the orders. Couples sat with suitcases drank their last cocktails in paradise before they headed off to the airport, and groups of friends who’d just arrived were already on their fourth or fifth cocktail as music pounded from the speakers. At the end closest to the beach, screens displayed the timings of the next planes to land on the landing strip to the right.

Next to the Sunset Beach Bar is Sandbar , a colourful new eatery which offers just about every kind of food you could wish for, from sushi and burgers to tacos and smores. For a slightly different vibe, and the opportunity to cook your own food on lava stones, head to the Palms Grill at the opposite end of the beach.

If you’re cruising throughout the Caribbean, I highly recommend using an eSim card so that you can easily access data across the region. The best value I’ve found so far is this one from Airalo – in fact I think they’re so bloomin’ good that I use their esims wherever I travel throughout the whole wide world!

Beach day under the airplanes

Fed and watered, Rachel and I headed onto the beach itself. The tide was in so close that there wasn’t a lot of free sand space at all- although I’m told there’s not a drastic difference between high and low tide at Maho. The crowds of people waiting for planes to land took up almost the entire middle of the beach closest to the runway. Plenty of crew from our ship had decided to visit that day as well, and we passed about thirty galley guys and their supervisor yelling “GALLEY GALLEY GALLEY!!! A-OO A-OO A-OO!!!” as they posed for group photos.

In the sea, people swam and jumped in the swell whilst waiting for the next plane to land. The only thing that separates the beach from the runway is a narrow tarmac road and a wire fence, on which signs are tacked, warning people to stay back because of blasts from the jets. And the area directly in the path to the runway was naturally where people gravitated towards; everyone needs the money shot of themselves with an airplane zooming low behind.

Finally we decided on a spot at the very far end, clear of the runway but close enough that we could make a run for it if we desperately wanted to be under the pathway of a jumbo jet. The sun was scorching hot and getting into the cool water melted away the crazy sweaty energy of the beach bar. The sky might have been blue by then, but the sea was ragingly choppy and the tide swept me off my feet several times before I could even think about getting further out into the water.

Whenever a plane appeared, twinkling in the distance of the now completely vivid blue sky, the throngs would gather tighter together, all vying for the best spot. Each airplane came in so low over the sand that it felt as if you could almost reach out and touch them as they rumbled onwards to the tarmac across the road. For the most part, we stayed out of the crowds but still appreciated the landings at an angle. But eventually the tide came in so close that there was nothing else for it but to pack up and move on.

Beware of the jet blasts- deaths at Maho Beach

Airplanes create quite humungous jet blasts when they’re taking off, and so it seems fairly logical that you shouldn’t stand too close. Kind of like never standing at the back end of a horse. It’s just not a good idea.

And yet there really is just a simple wire fence separating the road from the runway. In 2017 a woman from New Zealand was killed when she was thrown backwards by a jet blast from a Caribbean Airlines flight which was taking off. Pay attention to the signs, pals! And use your heads!

danger from jet blast at the airplane beach in dutch antilles

I had a great day watching the planes on Maho Beach, but will I be going back there in a hurry, pals? Probably not. Once was enough for me, and there are plenty more peaceful beaches on the island which are way more up my street.

Out of Your Comfort Zone

The art of backpacking & adventures to get out of your comfort zone – tips and advice, cheapest way to get from the cruise terminal to maho beach – st maarten / st martin.

Last Updated on March 19, 2024 by Talita

Ever seen pictures of people on a beach with an airplane passing just meters above their heads?

Well, that’s Maho Beach on St Maarten/St Martin, which planes fly over before landing on the island’s main airport!

From Maho Beach, you’ll have an incredible view of these planes since the beginning of the landing strip is right next to the beach. Just take a look at the photos!!!

Saint Martin Maho Beach Plane

So whether you’re spending some time in the Caribbean visiting the island of St Maarten/St Martin, or are just visiting for the day on a cruise , you’ll definitely want to stop by this beach.

The directions below were written especially for people who have just 1 day in St Maarten/St Martin because they are on a cruise stop. But the directions below also work if you just want to visit Maho Beach on your own or want to know how to get from Phillipsburg to Maho Beach!

How to get from the Saint Maarten/St Martin cruise port (Phillipsburg) to Maho Beach?

It’s easy!

Basically, you have 4 options:

  • Private taxi
  • Group van leaving from the cruise port
  • Renting a car
  • Catching the bus/public van from Phillipsburg straight to Maho Beach

For the first two options, I don’t even need to explain to them because they are very easy….but also expensive. About $20-30 per person.

Another option is to rent a car in Phillipsburg and drive to Maho Beach. But as you’ll read below, I don’t think it’s necessary to rent a car in St Marteen just to go to Maho Beach. But if you plan to visit other spots on the island as well, then it’s definitely worth doing.

My article here gives you the 5 best websites to rent cars in St Marteen and around the world .

But since you’re reading this article, I’m going to guess it’s because you want to save some money on your trip from the cruise port to Maho Beach on St Maarten/St Martin, right?

Saint Martin Airport

So why I recommend using public transportation to get from the cruise terminal in St Maarten/Saint Martin to Maho Beach?

There are 3 main reasons why I recommend you use public transportation from the St Maarten Port (Philipsburg) to Maho Beach:

   1. It’s a local experience.

Using public transportation lets you have a real local experience since this is the exact way the locals use to get around the island themselves. You’ll understand a bit better what real life looks like on Saint Martin, and not just feel like a tourist watching the world go by in an air-conditioned van.

   2. For an adventure!

Like the first reason, you never know what’ll happen when you travel alongside locals! Maybe you get to know one of them, begin to chat, and learn more about their lives on the island. And don’t worry – local transportation on Saint Martin is super safe! I’ve already used it for this route at least 5 times.

   3. To sav e money!

This one is obvious. By paying just $2.50 per person to get from Philipsburg to Maho Beach and then $2.50 to return, you won’t find a cheaper option from your cruise to Maho Beach.

Saint Martin Airport Danger Sign

And how to get from the port in St Maarten/Saint Martin (Philipsburg) to Maho Beach with public transportation?

If you’ve read my article about How to Visit Anguilla for a day on a Saint Martin Cruise Stop , then you’ll already know this process. But I’ll re-explain it here:

  • Disembark as early as possible from your cruise so you’ll have more time to explore and enjoy Maho Beach before the other crowds of tourists arrive.
  • Walk for about 10 minutes from the Philipsburg cruise terminal to the center of the city to take a local minibus to Maho Beach. The bus has a sign on the front windshield that says “Maho Beach.” A map with the bus’s location will be below. There are vans passing often, so you won’t have to wait long.
  • To return from Maho Beach to Philipsburg, just follow the same route but instead catch the minibus that passes by with the “Philipsburg” sign.
  • After about 30 minutes, you’ll be in Philipsburg and can simply walk back to the cruise terminal (and if you have time, you can explore a bit of Philipsburg since it’s quite nice).

Saint Martin Map

If you’re exploring Philipsburg in Sint Maarten, don’t miss the “ Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit ” – an exhibit created by the makeup artist and creature builder who made Yoda (not to mention a lot of other creatures from StarWars), Superman, Highlander & more.

Yoda Guy Museum St Maarten

Total cost to go and come back from the Sint Maarten cruise terminal (Philipsburg) to “airplane beach” (Maho Beach):  $5.00 USD

Total time:  approximately 30 minutes to go and 30 minutes to return

FINAL TIP:   Just make sure you return with lots of time before your ship leaves ! Since you’re using public transportation and there’s only one major road between the main areas of the island, you might get stuck in heavy traffic that could make you miss your cruise! And it’d be a nightmare and enormous cost to have to buy a plane ticket and fly to your cruise’s next destination.

With that in mind, leave Maho Beach at least 2.5 hours before the official departure time of your cruise. And remember, that you’ll have to wait 15 minutes or so until the van/minibus stops again in Maho Beach to bring you to Philipsburg.

And as I mentioned about, if you’re interested in visiting Anguilla using public transportation (buses and ferries)during your visit to St Maarten/St Martin, just check out my article here.

That’s it – if you have any questions, just let me know! Write to me in the comments area below and I promise I’ll get back to you!

Other activities to do in St Maarten / St Martin without paying for the cruise tours

We all know that tours booked with the cruise lines tend to be really expensive. And you also know that you can usually get cheaper deals for the same tour once you disembark. But at the same time, you want to be sure that you will find a tour that you like for a price you can pay.

So, I recommend booking your tour for St Maarten / Saint Martin in advance using Viator. It’s a tour booking website that belongs to TripAdvisor and offers a bunch of tours and ticket options for every budget.

In addition to Viator, I also recommend Get Your Guide and Civitatis to find and select the best attractions and tours for you on your next trip. They all have filter options that make it easy to choose the best trip for you!

Doreen

Coming from the cruise terminal in St. Maarten, can you give me the exact street corner where the bus stops on its way to Maho. Thanks

Rodrigo @ OutofYourComfortZone

Hi Doreen, thank you for the comment and sorry for the late reply! There is not an exact corner to catch the bus. You can take it along the third parallel street away from the beach. Around where I circled on the picture in the article.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

What kind of currency does the bus take – US dollars and quarters? Exact change? Thanks

Hey, sorry for the late reply! Yes, US dollar coins and they do give the exact change since the driver is full of US coins by his side! Please let me know if you have any other questions! 🙂

Ron Claros

Rodrigo – what a great web page! Thank you! BTW, does anyone know if there’s been any major changes POST-COVID-19? Are the buses still operating as usual? Are masks mandatory to ride the buses? Same price? $2.50US. Any input is appreciated – I’m planning to visit in the short future… thx again!

Hey Ron! Thank you for your comment! Great to know you liked the article! I’m not sure about masks, but when I’m cruising or visiting places during the stops, I always carry my mask, just in case some shop or museum ask for them. I was in Barbados last February 2022 and you had to wear masks inside local buses…not a big deal though. So just be prepared.

As for the bus price, it might have gone up a bit, but I’m sure it will still be the cheapest option available.

Let me know if you have any other questions! Take care!

Tim

Thank you. I searched hours to find the exact Maho to Philipsburg route to catch a bus from the Maho/Simpson Beach area to Philipsburg. Yours is the only map I could find. Thank you for taking the time to prepare and post it.

Hi Tim! Great to hear the article was helpful. I really couldn’t find a set schedule, but I know there are vans/buses coming and going all the time through this route. Since I had a bit of try and error to find this route, I thought it would be a good idea to share it here so others can do the same.

All the best!

Kasia

Rodrigo I cannot believe it’s you! Not sure if you remember me from Australia 🙂 but so glad that I found your post as I’m coming alone to St Martin next month for a day with my nearly 2 year old. He is very much planes obsessed so obviously we have to head to Maho beach. Do you you the bus trip is doable with a toddler?

Hey Kasia! How are you? Sorry Kasia, you will have to help me out here. 🙂 Where did we meet in Australia? Surf Live Saving, traveling, college, flatmates? What is your surname? 😀

All that said, I don’t believe the bus is a problem for your toddler. It’s a bit hot there, but it’s not a long or unsafe trip. I know I don’t yet remember who you are, but congratulations for your kid! Let me know if you have any other questions!

I’m a friend of Karolina so we met through her 🙂 Perfect, cannot wait for our trip then! Thanl you so much for your help again and what a fab blog you have. Safe travels x

Hey Kasia! Sorry, I was traveling and a bit out of the grid. 🙂 Yes!! Now I remember you. How are you doing? Still in Australia? Or Europe?

So happy you enjoyed the blog. If you have any questions about anything I can help, please let me know! Have a fantastic trip e enjoy the planes!

Hi there, my husband and I are wanting to take one of the public bus transportations to Maho beach, but would it be easy to find public transpiration from Maho beach to the Toppers Rhum Distillery and the find something from the distillery back to the cruise port? Thanks In advance!

Hi, thank you for your comment and question! Based on my map with the route and Google map’s location of Toppers Rhum Distillery, you would literally drive pass it. So you can do the stop on the way to Maho beach, and get another van marked “Maho” in front of the distillery, or on the way back to the cruise. Then you just pick up any van marked “Philipsburg”.

Just confirm the location of the distillery to make sure it matches with the route on my map. But it seems it does! Enjoy your cruise!

How to get to Maho Beach (the Airport Beach) from the Saint Maarten Cruise Port

Updated January 2024, How to get to Maho Beach (the Airport Beach) from the Saint Maarten Cruise Port was originally published in March 2023

The Airport Beach in Saint Maarten, also known as Maho Beach is a popular destination for plane spotters and beach-goers visiting Saint Maarten on a cruise stop. What made Maho Beach so famous is that it’s located just off the runway of Princess Juliana International Airport. While it’s not my typical destination, I will say watching the planes take off and land just barely above your head and the people watching did not disappoint.

So, if you’re headed to Saint Maarten, here is a quick little guide to help you find your way to the famed Airport Beach.

How to get to Saint Maarten’s Airport Beach

Maho Beach is located on the Dutch side of Saint Maarten and the cruise ship port is located right in Philipsburg, the capital of Dutch Saint Maarten.

Once off the ship and into the parking lot, you’ll quickly find vans loading up with passengers to various destinations including the Airport Beach. Just ask for Maho or Airport Beach and you’ll be pointed to a van headed in that direction.

These shuttle vans will set you back about $15 USD per person for a return ride. Once you’re on board and have paid you’ll be given a wristband, this is essentially you’re ticket back to the port.

The van will drop you off at a parking lot near Airport Beach and from there it’s just a short walk over. When you’re ready to leave head right back to this parking lot and you’ll be able to board a van headed back to the port.

Expect the journey to take anywhere between 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.

Maho Beach, Airport Beach, Saint Maarten, Caribbean

What to do at Maho Beach

The main thing you came for is to watch jets take off from Saint Maarten just mere meters away on the beach. The beach is sandwiched between clusters of beach bars and restaurants, so there is plenty to eat and drink should be hungry.

The area to avoid when planes are taking off is well marked, so unless you want to potentially get hurled into the sea, get off to the sides when a plane is taking off. I watched one lady get rag-dolled down the beach, losing her hat and top as she was blasted into the ocean… but she didn’t lose her beer.

Had Enough People Watching at Maho Beach?

Mullet Beach, Saint Maarten, Caribbean

Maho is definitely worth a visit on your Saint Maarten trip because it is pretty unique after all, but if you’re looking to get away from the big wild crowd, make the short walk over to nearby Mullet Beach.

Plane Spotting at Maho Beach (How to Get There, When to Go and How to Stay Safe)

Plane Spotting at Maho Beach

Creating buzz worldwide, and a local thrill Maho Beach has a charm and quirk that is unique to Sint Maarten. From Boeings, airbuses, windsurfing, beach bars, and top-rated restaurants, this fabled beach, has a lot to offer to those seeking a tourist rite of passage in Sint Maarten.

In Which Country Is Maho Beach?

Maho Beach is one of the most celebrated and iconic spots in Sint Maarten, a Dutch constituent country in the Caribbean. The beach has become one of the island’s must-visit places, and a landmark that is so interestingly quirky, that it has become a tourist rite of passage, whenever you’re on the Dutch side of Saint Martin Island.

Maho Beach sits right between the runway of the Princess Juliana International Aiport and the waters of the Simpson Bay, giving a quirky charm to this long white sand stretch. The beach is popular for planespotting, water activities, beach lounging, or just having a good time drinking at the nearby local bar.

Is Maho Beach on the French or Dutch Side?

The iconic Maho Beach is located on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten, on the island of Saint Martin. The Dutch side is popular for its more cosmopolitan flavor along with its stunning beaches that go with tons of activities that you can do, one of them is plane spotting where the beach is extremely famous for.

Where Is Maho Beach Located

The famed beach is nestled between the stunning blue waters of Maho Bay and the threshold of the runways of Princess Juliana International Airport. Maho Beach is located on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten, west of tourist-heavy Simpson Bay , which faces the Caribbean, at the southern end of the island.

When in Maho Beach, you will find that it is close to several key places on the island, other than the airport. Thanks to the beach’s location, it is home to many tours and adventure companies right around Simpson Bay that can take you to a slew of special spots across the island. You can also head to the neighboring and quiet Mullet Beach if you’re the type to lounge on the beach with true tranquility.

Is Maho Beach Safe or Dangerous?

When it comes to swimming, there is nothing to worry about except the rocks that may prick your bare feet when you get far enough from the shore, so it’s best to have aquatic shoes. The beach is an ideal spot for windsurfing due to the high winds that tend to blow through the bay, however, the real danger that comes is with how people challenge the plane that takes off right across the beach.

The beach is popular for spotting planes that land at the adjacent airport. The area of the beach is small with only a handful of establishments along the oceanfront such as restaurants, bars, and a few hotels. The crowds staying near the runway can be oblivious to the dangers of the planes.

Winds from the jets and airplanes tend to reach more than 100 mph, and that strength can cause serious injury or even death is possible. But despite the possible hazard, a lot of tourists still flock to the danger zones of the beach. The sheer strength of a 747 about to take off can propel people or even throw them violently out into the ocean. Despite the numerous signs warning people to stay away, hundreds still flock to the area for the sake of the thrill and experience, or worse, social media clout.

Has Anyone Died on Maho Beach?

There have been quite a few reports of injury on the beach but not due to swimming in its waters, but because of the wind blasts of departing planes from the adjacent Princess Juliana International Airport . In July of 2017, one tourist died.

A 57-year-old woman died due to the injuries she sustained after being thrown to a concrete barrier by the blast from a departing plane. She died in the Sint Maarten Medical Center shortly after the incident. Tourists tend to flock to the location, for watching low-flying planes as they land and take off from the airport, despite the many warnings about the potential dangers both from officials and the ones displayed on the fences.

What Happened at Maho Beach?

Three hallmark events happened in Maho Beach that gave the beach a rather colored reputation among the locals and tourists. First, the beach was destroyed by Hurricane Omar back ‘08, where it destroyed the Sunset Bar and Grill, Bamboo Bernies, and Bliss, and almost took a year for these establishments to reopen. Due to Hurricane Omar’s devastating effects, the beach was reduced to boulders.

The same thing happened again in 2017, due to the ravages of Hurricane Irma which has severely crippled the island’s economy which took them 2 years to fully recover. Maho Beach was again destroyed, and the beach’s sands were blown out, or completely thinned out, revealing only boulders and rocks.

In the same year, a woman also died because of the blast from a departing plane. Due to the beach’s proximity to the runway of Princess Juliana International Airport, tourists tend to watch planes land as they pass overhead, or challenge a departing plane’s blast right off the airport’s fences while holding on to them.

The blast caused a woman to be thrown against a concrete barrier resulted in injuries that eventually caused her death while being treated in Sint Maarten Medical Center. The blast of departing planes tends to be so strong it is likened to sustained winds of category 5 hurricanes.

Has Maho Beach Been Rebuilt?

Maho Beach’s sand was virtually lost due to Hurricane Irma’s devastation back in 2017, what used to be a world-famous beach for many planespotters, and playful, curious tourists were reduced to boulders, and rocks, and crashing waves. The surrounding resorts and facilities were also ravaged, most of what was washed out to sea.

However, the beach was rebuilt, as well as the nearby Sunset Bar and Grill, another island icon. Bigger players like resorts such as the Royal Islands Club La Plage were also rebuilt, and went back to business in full swing in 2019, two years after the severe damage of the hurricane, that most probably one of the island’s most historical events.

Do Planes Still Fly Over Maho Beach?

From large Boeings, and airbuses, airplanes, and jets still fly over Maho Beach, both arriving and departing. This quirky phenomenon causes a big fiasco among many tourists that flock by the hundreds over the fences of the airport’s runway, right at Maho Beach.

Whether you’re standing right at the fence just to be blown away by a departing plane, or watching one fly overhead as it lands, you can watch planes from KLM, AirFrance, and a slew of other air carriers/

This event may be quintessential Sint Maarten and has put Maho Beach on the list of the world’s most famous and must-visit beaches, but it does pose a risk to many curious and overenthusiastic tourists. Reports of injuries and even death were involved because of this phenomenon, but people still risk their lives for it, despite the officials’ warnings and efforts.

How Often Do Planes Fly Over Maho Beach?

Whether their big passenger planes, jets, or small charters, you can spot or watch a plane fly by overhead every 15 minutes. However, that depends on the season. Planes tend to fly over or take off, on Sint Maarten’s busiest seasons more frequently allowing more chances for more people to watch what the fuss is all about in Maho Beach.

The Best Time to See Planes at Maho Beach

If you’re at an airport, taking a plane to somewhere beautiful and almost unreal, like Sint Maarten for example, you’ll probably notice that it’s always busy. That’s because there are always flights every 15 to 30 minutes, so there really isn’t the best time to see planes at Maho Beach, because that is probably any time.

But, thanks to enthusiasts of the beach, and dedicated aviation geeks out there, there is a chalkboard at the Sunset Bar that shows everyone the daily arrivals schedule for reference. The deal is if you have internet, you can easily access the airport website, and check their flight information.

How Much Does It Cost to Go to Maho Beach?

Maho Beach is public access and doesn’t charge fees whatsoever, however, the parking lot next to the beach sometimes do, for maintenance. So, if you plan to visit, and have a rental car expect to pay some fees but nothing too dramatic.

The real cost you might have to spend there are the amenities you may use, and the food and drinks you may want to treat yourself to. You can bring around 25 to 50 USD, as an initial budget just in case, unless you’re the type with a wider budget and splurging plan, you can always up the ante.

Is Maho Beach Nice?

Maho Beach, other than its fun and quirky plane-flying-overhead feature, is also a nice beach to visit too. It is a considerably long beach that stretches around the center of the crescent-shaped Maho Bay, right next to Simpson Bay and Burgeaux Bay.

The thing with the entire island of Saint Martin , no matter which side, will always have nice beaches, given its beautiful turquoise blue waters, with schools of tropical fish you can check out by snorkeling. The catch is that it is never a quiet beach, other than the airport next door, the beach also has bars and restaurants that attract vibrant and dynamic energy to the area.

The Best Restaurant Maho Beach

The restaurant Moulin Fou, and Tortuga Maho are some of the top-rated restaurants near Maho Beach, offering hungry, or gastronomically adventurous visitors that come to the coveted Maho Beach, and Simpson Bay.

Moulin Fou is a French restaurant renowned for serving prime French cuisine with an interesting address – located right between the Princess Juliana International Airport, and Mullet Bay gold Club, just next door to Maho Bay.

The famous OTrtuga Maho is one of the most well-known restaurants in the area with their servings of salad, pasta, and desserts, you can be sure to have whatever your palate is looking for satisfied by Tortuga Maho, roughly translated as Maho Turtle. But the restaurant’s biggest draw is its ocean view, where you can dine with an amazing view of the Caribbean and the rest of the bay.

How Do I Get to Maho Beach?

You can get to Maho Beach by two common options, by public transport or taxi, or by rental cars. You can get to the beach via bus, or taxi quite easily if you’re staying around Simpson Bay or Philipsburg. If you’re coming from the cruise terminal, it’s around a 17-minute ride to Maho Beach.

If you’re staying on the island for longer days and opted for a rental car, you can park it right next to the beach, but just bring enough cash with you as the parking lot may charge you a small fee.

Where to Park at Maho Beach

There’s a parking lot next to the Sunset Bar and Grill, just spare cash for the parking fee. The rates may change from time to time, but the parking lot usually charges people.

However, due to the reputation of the beach, many people might be flocking, and parking may be full, but according to previous visitors, its capacity may be tricky, as there is a casino nearby, and some guests tend to use the parking lot as well.

How Far Is Maho Beach From the Cruise Terminal?

Maho Beach is approximately 13.9 km or 8.6 miles from the cruise terminal via the airport road and can take around 17 minutes to drive, via car or taxi. Getting to Maho Beach, plane-watching, and enjoy every pleasure the beach has to offer is one of the best, and possibly simples shore excursions you can do while on a cruise, especially if you have a full day of disembarking.

You can also enjoy even more delights from the restaurants along the beach, explore Simpson Bay, and meet other Sint Maarten-loving tourists, and locals, while you’re at it. The thing with coming from the Cruise Terminal is that you get to see a fraction of Philipsburg, and can give you an overview or an idea or two, on how to conquer the Dutch capital.

How to Get to Maho Beach From Cruise Terminal

if you’re coming from the cruise ships to Sint Maarten, Maho Beach is probably one of the hottest entries in your shore excursion list, but do not fret, as you have four options to get to the coveted beach from the cruise terminal.

You can go by taxi, a group can that takes passengers from the cruise port right to the beach, a rental car, or catching public transport like a bus or a van from the city of Philipsburg to Maho Beach.

Your first two options are the easiest, and most probably the fastest, however, they’re also the most expensive. Fare prices can range from 20 to 30 USD, and a group van charges per head.

If you prefer to rent a car to go through the island at your own route and pace, there are plenty of rental companies that dot the city, however, it may not be necessary if you’re only going to Maho Beach.

Or, if you want to take it slower, yet cheaper, you can always get on buses and other public transport options to get to the beach which typically costs around 5 USD.

How Much Is a Taxi From Cruise Port to Maho Beach?

Taxis are probably one of the most expensive transportation options for getting around Philipsburg, or to Maho Beach. Most taxis would cost around 20 to 30 USD, and would usually take around 20 minutes.

How Far Is Maho Beach From Philipsburg?

Maho Beach is approximately 11 km or 6.8 miles from the center of Philipsburg via the airport road and can take around 15 to 18 minutes to drive, via car or taxi. However, that can change depending on certain factors along the way, like traffic, if you’re visiting during the peak season.

How to Get From Philipsburg to Maho Beach

You can get to Maho Beach from Philipsburg by three common options, by taxi, by public transport such as bus or a van, or by rental car. Taxis, however, are known to be one of the most expensive if not the most expensive option. Fare prices tend to reach 20+ USD, but they’re the fastest way that can get you there.

Public transport such as buses and vans are the most economical, they’re good and all if you don’t mind how long the ride can get compared with a taxi. Buses typically cost 5 USD, one way. A rental car is also economical, but not the cheapest, but it would lose its value if you just use it to get to Maho Beach. Rental cars are ideal for people staying longer in Sint Maarten , as opposed to a one-day excursion.

How Far Is Mullet Bay From Maho Beach?

Mullet Bay is only around a kilometer away from Maho Beach. Going to Mullet Bay is usually an idea accompanied when people think of Maho Beach, especially if people want to get away from the noise of both the people and the planes. You can get to the bay by just walking that can take around less than ten minutes, four if you decide to drive.

Can You Walk From Maho Beach to Mullet Bay?

Walking is ideal as the distance isn’t too great that one would need a set of wheels to get to. The distance is only around a kilometer, and walking to Mullet Bay would only take less than 10 minutes.

How Far Is Maho Beach From Simpson Bay?

Maho Beach is only approximately 700 meters away from Simpson Bay, which is ideal as you can just walk in-between them. This short distance covers a lot of ground, and allows tourists to do so many things, and explore more places in less than a day.

What Else to Do in Maho Beach

Apart from the famous plane spotting must-do, or chill and drink at the iconic Sunset Bar & Grill, there are plenty of other interesting things to do in Maho Beach just as much as any crowded yet fun beach in the world.

You can splurge your spare cash in the nearby Sonesta Resort and Casino, complete with games of your liking. One of Sint Maarten’s best draws is the number of casinos it has on its side, and with that casinos and other gaming, facilities are made fun, the Sint Maarten way.

One best thing to do in Maho Beach, when you’re in the area is to leave it. If you’ve had enough of noise plane watchers, crowded bars, and engine noises of airplanes flying by, you can go to the neighboring Mullet Beach, and lounge and chill. It’s just within walking distance and takes little time.

You can also check out the famous restaurants that line the beach for that well-deserved treat, like the Tortuga Maho, and the many restaurants of the resort nearby as well.

Q: Are there any special considerations for taking a taxi with children or seniors?

A: If you are traveling with children or seniors, be sure to let the taxi driver know so that they can accommodate your needs. For example, some taxi drivers may have car seats available for children or be able to help seniors with their luggage.

Q: Are there any other transportation options available from the St. Maarten cruise port?

A: Yes, there are a few other transportation options available from the St. Maarten cruise port, including buses and rental cars. Buses are affordable but can be crowded, and rental cars are a good choice if you plan on exploring the island extensively. However, keep in mind that driving on St. Maarten can be challenging, especially if you’re not used to driving on the left side of the road.

Famous Maho Beach known for plane landing over head with bars on the back of the picture on St Maarten / St Martin

  • Description
  • Contact Information

Maho Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world, as it finds itself at the end of the runway of St Maarten Princess Juliana International Airport (sxm)  laying the scene for many vacation videos and selfies that went viral of planes landing and departing at the adjacent Dutch side airport.

The runway was initially built by the United States army in the Second World War as a hub for search flights for German submarines. The hilly island of St Maarten only allowed for very few spots to build an airport; the most excellent being a sand bar bordering the sea and the Simpson Bay Lagoon .

Over time, as planes got bigger, land was claimed from the lagoon to expand the runway. The proximity of the runway to Maho Beach became an attraction by itself giving it the nickname “airport beach”. Stayover as well as cruise visitors consider a visit to the beach a unique moment for a picture or video as there is few other opportunities in the world to get as close to a flying or departing aircraft ( For directions how to get to Maho beach from hotel areas or the cruise port, please see below).

The beach has also become a global must see for plane spotters. The spectacular landing over Maho Bay even made it into Microsoft’s famed Flight Simulator program. The departure itself is not less of a phenomenon, as the hills of St Maarten rise steeply behind the other end of the air strip.

Maho Beach Impression

When is the best time to see planes landing at Maho Beach?

As Princess Juliana International Airport has grown into an archipelago tourism hub  you are ensured that when visiting Maho beach during daytime, you see planes landing every few minutes. Most tourists however aim for the larger boeings and airbuses arriving and departing. Particularly popular are the intercontinental flight departures to Europe (KLM to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and Air France to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) in the afternoon.

A surfboard changed into a chalkboard at the Sunset Beach Bar provides you with a schedule of what airplanes to expect soon to arrive and depart. You can also check in advance what (type of) airplanes are prone to come in soon at the arrivals schedule website of Princess Juliana Airport (SXM) .

The same accounts for departing planes, known for their whirlwind of sand pushing beachgoers into the sea when leaving. Regional propeller planes are not to be feared, but when larger planes are about to depart, keep your belongings together and brace! Remain on the beach side of the road and do not hold the airport fence to keep yourself and others safe. Do not worry about that would be less of an experience; the jet blast will reach you at the beach side too…

Don’t Forget to Enjoy the Beach and its Amenities!

As with all St Maarten beaches , Maho beach is open and freely accessible for plane spotters and beach fans. Famous for its ongoing traffic above your head or not, Maho beach is also a pristine beach at a beautifully situated deep blue bay, that you can enjoy by swimming and sunbathing on the beach. Many amenities and bars are adjacent to the beach, and some of St Maarten’s largest resorts are situated around this area.

If you situate your beach towel towards the corners of the beach, the blast of larger planes will not be not much of a nuisance and only gives you a great view of the crowds experiencing the blast effect.

In the evening, enjoy nearby Maho Village or the Morgan Resort  area for a cocktail to shake off the sand. See below for some great spots for a drink or bite after visiting this plane spotting mecca.

How to get to Maho Beach

How to get to maho beach by bus / public transport from philipsburg and cruise port st. maarten.

Buses to Maho Beach depart every some minutes from Emmaplein bus station on the east end of Philipsburg. Emmaplein is only a five minute walk from the AC Wathey cruise pier, where all cruise liners to St. Maarten dock. Take the buses either displaying “Maho” or “Cupecoy”. Tell the driver you want to leave the bus at Maho Beach. Your total estimated travel time will be, depending on traffic, between 20 to 35 minutes. Taxis  to Maho Beach can also be taken from Philipsburg or the cruise port. The same accounts for excursions that stop at this beach.

How to get to Maho Beach from Philipsburg or Oyster Pond

If you come by car from the Oyster Pond  area, take the main road in the northeastern corner of the bay for ten minutes until you reach the Emancipation Monument Roundabout  in Philipsburg  to Pondfill  road.

Continue Pondfill road with the Great Salt Pond  on your right hand. Pass the traffic lights and the Prince Bernhard bridge. In five minutes you reach a roundabout, turn left and follow the road uphill. When you reach the next roundabout, turn right as a view of the Caribbean unfolds itself.

After the road winds down with a panoramic view of the Simpson Bay Lagoon , turn left on the Krayenhoff Roundabout and follow this main road for 10 minutes throughout the Simpson Bay area with the lagoon on your right hand side until you see the Princess Juliana International airport runway. Keep following the main road you are on to the right until you reach a roundabout with a statue of brown pelicans  flying in various directions.

On the roundabout, turn left and follow the runway all the way along the airport  terminal and buildings until you reach the roundabout at Maho Beach. For parking suggestions, please see below.

How to Get to Maho Beach from the Lowlands and Cupecoy  areas

From the lowlands, cross the border towards Cupecoy. Take the main road through the Golf Course  and continue through Maho Village until you reach the Maho Beach roundabout. See for parking suggestions below.

How to get to Maho Beach from Orient Bay , Grand Case  and Marigot

If you are coming from Orient Bay, the easiest route to Maho Beach is via Grand Case. Depart Orient Bay gates and take the road to the right, turn left on the first roundabout and continue along Grand Case L’Esperance Grand Case Airport .

Remain on this road as it passes through Grand Case and bends to the south. Keep continuing this road until you reach the Emancipation Statue Roundabout. Turn right and continue this road all along Marigots waterfront. At the next roundabout, turn left and continue to the Concordia Monument . After you entered the Dutch side  the Concordia Monument, turn right onto the Causeway Bridge . Continue straight at the roundabout with the statue of pelicans taking off, and continue to follow directions mentioned above.

Parking at Maho Beach

Maho beach consists of a narrow stretch between the sea and the airport; parking or standing still along the road parallel to the beach is not possible. To park your car, it is best to make use of the paid parking’s either at Morgan Resort (east side of the runway end – you get there by turning left on the roundabout and a short drive along the beach) or the garage at the far end of the Maho village (turn right on the roundabout, drive through the village and enter left just before you reach the golf course ).

Do they boat trips you can take we are coming there on a cruise

There will definitely be tours to Maho Beach as it is very popular. Not sure if there are boat tours specifically but you might be able to do a regular tour or get a taxi to get there. I would check with your cruise to see what they offer. It is definitely worth it.

Extreme Aviation at Maho Beach in St. Maarten

By Author Laura Longwell

Posted on Last updated: January 4, 2021

When we stop in cruise ports, we usually venture out on our own rather than joining excursions from the ship or other organized tours. Typically, that means we get more time at our destination and save money. It also usually means we avoid the crowds because we go somewhere a little less touristy. But sometimes we head right into the heart of the tourist hub. Knowingly. And that’s what happened when we visited Maho Beach in St. Maarten.

Plane approaching airport over the ocean

Why Visit Maho Beach

Tips for visiting the beach, get an early start, choose your location carefully, know the schedule, watch for takeoff, prepare for photos, take a break from the crowd, leave time to get back.

Maho Beach on the Dutch side of St. Maarten is the best vantage point to watch planes land at Princess Juliana International Airport (aka Maho Beach Airport). There are just a few yards between the edge of the beach and the edge of the runway–only a two-lane road separates them. That means that the planes have to approach at a low altitude in order to hit the runway at just the right time. It makes for quite a show.

People waiting for plane to take off

Until recently, the major attraction was the landing of KLM’s regular 747 flights. Photos of the massive plane’s flight path make it look like the plane is mere inches from beachgoers as it heads toward the runway.

Alas, the 747 doesn’t fly here regularly anymore. But watching the planes is still a fun experience.

Beachside restaurant

We spent all day watching the planes take off and land and learned a lot along the way. Here’s our best advice for how to get the most out of a day at Maho Beach.

Watching the planes land at St Maarten airport beach is a popular activity. We knew it would be crowded since we were cruising in high season around the holidays . To get a good spot and have the most opportunities for watching landings, we decided to start our day early, and that turned out to be an important decision.

Coming in from St. Kitts , our ship docked just before 9am. Not long after that, we were off and ready to start our day. A taxi to from the cruise port was only $7 per person each way, so we found a shuttle and headed for the beach. By 10am, we arrived at the small beach, which was already filling up. Getting there early was critical to having options for where to sit.

Pool and chairs on a deck

At 10am, the beach was about half-full with lounge chairs packed closely together. Fortunately, the Sunset Bar and Grill was nearly empty. We realized that everything had the potential to get quite packed as the day went on and setting up shop on the beach would put us directly in the middle of the crowd.

Instead, we opted for cushy chairs beside Sunset’s pool area where we could relax all day, have dedicated food and drink service, and go to the beach whenever we wanted. For a rental fee of $10 per chair, which included use of the pool, it turned out to the perfect decision for us. If we hadn’t gotten that spot, our day at wouldn’t have been nearly as enjoyable.

When you’re deciding where to sit, consider how long you plan to stay at the beach, your tolerance for crowds, and whether you plan to eat or drink. Thinking about this ahead of time can make a big difference.

To see Maho Beach and visit Orient Beach, too, consider this half-day tour . If seeing more of the island is on your agenda, see reviews and prices for this tour that will take you to both the French and Dutch sides, including a Maho Beach visit.

Food and drinks

Everyone who comes to Maho Beach is there to see the planes. As a result, every time a plane takes off or lands, there is a mad dash of people across the property to get a good view. Knowing the schedule can help you plan where you would like to be a few minutes ahead of time so that you can avoid the rush.

If you have Internet access, the airport’s website is a great place to get flight information. Alternatively, you can get the daily arrivals schedule easily from the chalkboard at the Sunset Bar. What wasn’t immediately clear to us was that the planes listed were only the major airlines.

Throughout the day, dozens of small planes land, bridging the gaps between the jetliners’ landings. No matter how small the planes are, it’s exciting to watch them appear seemingly from nowhere and head straight toward where you’re standing.

Plane behind a sign about the dangers of being too close

One aspect of a day at St. Maarten’s Maho Beach that we hadn’t counted on was that plane landings aren’t the only attraction. Take-offs get a lot of attention, too.

As the planes turn to take their place on the runway at take-off, their exhaust barrels toward the fence that separates the airport from the road. If you’re sitting on the beach or at the bar, you like wouldn’t notice it. But some intrepid souls decide to ride the fence to get the force of the blast. Signs along the fence make it clear how dangerous that can be.

Warning sign telling visitors not to fence surf and a man on the fence

Watching planes land here is truly a unique experience, and most people are focused on getting great photos. Unless you have a great travel camera or excel at taking action shots, it can be difficult to time things perfectly because the planes move fast.

You can take photos from anywhere on the beach or at the bar where you have a clear view. For us, the two best spots were parallel to the runway to get more overhead shots and near the pool where we could capture the whole scene of the arriving plane and the beach below.

We set our cameras to continuous shooting, so we could capture the plane as it moved across the sky. My sister also shot some great iPhone videos and got perfect photos by just holding down the iPhone’s button to create a photo burst.

Jet landing over people on a beach

Both the beach and the bar can get crowded. If you’re planning to eat lunch, consider ordering before you’re really hungry in case it takes awhile for the food to arrive. The restaurant gets particularly busy 12:30-2:00pm but is quieter at other times.

If you’re a confident swimmer, consider taking a break from the crowds.

Most people swim quite close to the beach, which can make the water nearly as crowded as the land. We swam out a little farther and were alone with schools of fish, sea urchins, and coral. Consider bringing a snorkel set to see them up close. [Also, check out our helpful guide on the best snorkel gear for traveling .]

Coral reef underwater

Transportation is convenient in St. Maarten. We had no trouble getting a shuttle from the cruise port or getting one back to the ship.

Instead, our challenge was time. St. Maarten has a number of drawbridges that can stop traffic for some time–while it only took about a half-hour to get to Maho Beach, it took us closer to an hour to return to the ship in the afternoon. Don’t cut it too close.

Wow. I can't believe you can get that close to a plane. I can't believe people aren't killed or injured more frequently. I wouldn't like to be there.

@Robin, a woman got killed a while back from the jet blast of a jetliner while riding the fence. The jet blast threw her head first into a pillar of concrete. She hit her head and died.

People get hit by flying debris all the time. There's big warning signs not to stand immediately behind the jets, however, some people still do it. It's actually quite thrilling to stand off to side and watch.

We rented a scooter at the port for $60 and rode about 26 miles around the island. It was a perfect way to see a lot!

well your still too young to rent your own car, so I would recommend you catch a cab from the cruise port...Probably cost you $15 - $20 each way if your going alone... You might want to convince your parents to go with you, because it really is an experience EVERYONE enjoys!

goneclear

Just Get a Taxi as you get off the ship, Will be cheaper if you get someone to share it with you. It's about 25 to 45 min drive depending on traffic. Dont tell the taxi to wait as that will cost you. Maho beach is in an very nice area where you can do some shopping also. When you are ready to leave just walk over to Maho Beach Hotel and there are taxis there. You will enjoy this. Try to do it in the after lunch period or evening as that is when most of the big jets come in.

thanks for all the info!

We just got back Saturday. We went to Maho/Sunset Beach Bar on Wed 12/14/2005. Check out the following link. This guy knows what he is talking about. Our experience was different. We walked to downtown (short walk)saving the $10 water taxi ride. Once down there you can catch a bus for $1.50 to Maho. We wandered out of the downtown area and only had a choice of taxi's. Costs us $16 to Maho. If I would have stayed until a bus came I could have gotten a much cheaper ride to Maho. We met some friends at Maho and they had taken the bus for $1.50. When we were done at Maho we walked a short distance to the Sonesta resort and they hailed a cab for us. $5 each person back to the ship. 4 of us $20. Give yourself at least 45 minutes to get back to the ship. Lots of traffic on the way back. Our ship's final boarding was 4:15p, we left Maho at 3:15 and had about 15 minutes to spare.

There are some good links on this board to flight schedules for Julianna Airport. If you do go to any flight tracking site the airport abbrevation is SXM.

Good luck and have fun.
