"imzadi": star trek's betazoid term of endearment explained.

Will Riker and Deanna Troi often refer to one another as Imzadi in Star Trek, but what does the Betazoid term of endearment actually mean?

  • Imzadi is a Betazoid term of endearment that means "beloved," and is often used to describe romantic love but can also refer to platonic love.
  • Although the relationship between Riker and Troi goes through different stages, they always remain Imzadi to each other, with their initial connection on Betazed being influential.
  • Even after their marriage and the loss of their child, Riker and Troi continue to refer to each other as Imzadi, showcasing the deep love and respect they have for one another.

Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) and Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) call one another Imzadi throughout Star Trek , but what does the Betazoid term of endearment really mean? The word Imzadi is first spoken (or rather thought telepathically) by half-Betazoid Deanna Troi in the series premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation . After Commander Riker arrives on the USS Enterprise-D as its new First Officer, Troi greets him telepathically, referring to him as Imzadi. Riker continues to stare longingly at Deanna, but he does not respond to her, making it unclear if he could even hear her.

By the time they join the crew of the Enterprise-D when Star Trek: The Next Generation begins, Troi and Riker have ended the relatioship they shared years earlier on Betazed, but both of them clearly still have lingering feelings. Despite this, they do not officially rekindle their romance until the third TNG film, Star Trek: Insurrection . Still, they refer to one another as Imzadi throughout TNG , as well as after Riker and Troi finally marry in Star Trek: Nemesis . In TNG season 1, episode 10, "Haven," Deanna and Will discuss the term Imzadi as Deanna prepares for her wedding to a man she was bonded to as a child. Although she does not go through with the arranged marriage, Troi reveals to Riker that he will always be her Imzadi, even if they cannot be together romantically.

What The Betazoid Word Imzadi Means

Imzadi is a Betazed word that means "beloved." While the term is often used to refer to romantic love, it can also be used to describe platonic love. Similar to the concept of soul mates, those who refer to one another as Imzadi could be said to have a deep, almost spiritual, connection. Although Commander Riker and Deanna Troi are not romantically involved throughout the seven seasons of TNG , they often refer to one another as Imzadi in times of danger or stress. As they become more comfortable in their friendship, Riker and Troi call each other Imzadi more casually, underlining the idea that Imzadi means more than a romantic connection.

Other instances of the term Imzadi can be found in Star Trek tie-in fiction. Though not officially considered canon, the Star Trek novel titled Imzadi by Peter David delves deeper into Troi and Riker's romance and depicts their initial relationship on Betazed. The second Imzadi novel, Triangle: Imzadi II , also looks into the true meaning of this Betazed term, and has Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) refer to the recently deceased Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) as his Imzadi. Along with Troi and Riker, Worf and Jadzia make up one of Star Trek's greatest couples, although their story has a much more tragic end.

Why Riker and Troi Call Each Other Imzadi

Will and Deanna's relationship has gone through many different stages, but they have always remained Imzadi to one another. That initial connection they formed on Betazed proved to be incredibly meaningful and influential for both of them. While many of the interactions between Riker and Troi in the early episodes of TNG were a bit awkward, they eventually grew to be close friends. This friendship added another layer to their relationship, bringing them even closer together.

After Will and Deanna get married, they go on to have two children, Thad and Kestra (Lulu Wilson). Tragically, Will and Deanna's son Thad passes away as a child, causing understandable complications in their marriage. As a half-Betazoid, Deanna can feel not only her own grief, but Riker's as well. Though Will and Deanna are making things work in Star Trek: Picard season 1, they truly come back together in Picard season 3.

In Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 8, "Surrender," Riker and Troi reunite as captives of the evil Changeling leader, Vadic (Amanda Plummer). Will refers to Deanna twice as Imzadi in this short scene, as the two joke with one another despite their dire situation. The clear love and respect shared by Will Riker and Deanna Troi cements them as one of Star Trek 's best couples, and no term defines what they mean to one another better than Imzadi.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Images Tease the Return of Imzadi

Will Riker and Deanna Troi will reunite in Episode 8 of Star Trek: Picard.

Several images from Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 8, “Surrender,” were released on Monday, April 3, 2023, and they tease the return of Imzadi, aka the relationship between William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis). The images seem to show Riker and Troi embracing one another aboard the Shrike , the ship belonging to the monologue-loving Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer). While neither Riker nor Troi appeared in the seventh episode of Picard season 3, these images tease their return, and teases that the duo will share a set for the first time this season in the upcoming episode.

What Does "Imzadi" Mean?

“Imzadi” is a word in the Betazed language. When translated to English, its closest analogue is the term of endearment “beloved.” Given her heritage as a Betazoid-human hybrid, Deanna is the one to bring the word into play. Its first appearance takes place in the very first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation , “Encounter at Farpoint.” In this episode, Deanna telepathically calls Riker “Imzadi” when they are reunited on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D .

Over the course of TNG ’s seven seasons, Riker and Deanna had an on-again off-again romantic entanglement. However, their relationship was given new certitude in the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis , which is currently the final big-screen outing for the TNG crew. That movie opened with Riker and Deanna’s wedding reception.

After their wedding in Nemesis , Riker and Deanna are rarely separated. This is confirmed by the Star Trek: Lower Decks season 1 finale, “No Small Parts.” In this episode, it is confirmed that both Riker and Deanna are assigned to the U.S.S. Titan in the years immediately following Nemesis . In Picard seasons 1 and 3, it is further confirmed that Riker and Deanna’s first child, Thaddeus, is born aboard this second Titan .

In Picard season 1, an older version of the couple reappears in the episode “Nepenthe.” This episode reveals that the couple relocated to Nepenthe because the planet’s natural resources might counteract an affliction faced by Thad. Unfortunately, their efforts are in vain, and Thad subsequently passes away.

Picard season 3 has seen the return of both Riker and Troi. But so far, Riker has had more screen time than Deanna, and the couple has mostly only shared the screen when speaking with one another over subspace communications. However, in the conclusive scene of episode 6, “The Bounty,” Riker and Troi are reunited… albeit as the prisoners of Vadic.

Picard Season 3 Episode 8 Easter Eggs Bring Star Trek: TNG Full Circle

The Titan crew is at their lowest point yet, but Star Trek: Picard has some easter eggs to save the day.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Episode 6 Easter Eggs

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.

The easter egg game is afoot! As was true with Picard ’s easter egg bonanza from a few weeks ago, episode 8, “Surrender,” uses callbacks and references in such a way that you can’t actually figure out how the plot would work without this stuff. We know that the final two episodes of Picard season 3 will surely be packed beyond belief with references and Trekkie surprises, but for now, in “Surrender,” the references pack a punch because they make the plot happen.

Here are the best easter eggs and references in episode 8:

Vadic Smoking on the Bridge

Although it’s possible this isn’t an intentional reference, Vadic smoking one of her dusty shapeshifter cigarettes on the bridge of the Titan might be a shout-out to The Wrath of Khan . In that movie, at the very start, there are signs on the bridge of the Enterprise that say “no smoking.” The Titan bridge also uses a pretty heavy amount of TOS bridge sound effects, so there’s definitely a classic vibe to this unorthodox opening.

Ad – content continues below

Vadic Is Like Khan, But Not From The Wrath

As Vadic threatens to crew with all the ways she can mess with the environmental controls with a “tap of my finger,” TOS fans should be reminded of Khan in “Space Seed.” In that episode, Khan took over all ship functions from engineering and sucked all the air out of the bridge.

Riker and Troi, Imzadi Reunited

Troi mentions that she really wished she’d taught Riker another Betazoid word other than “Imzadi.” We learned this word meant “beloved” way back in “Encounter at Farpoint,” but throughout The Next Generation it really did seem like Riker used it way more than Troi — including the transporter duplicate Thomas Riker in “Second Chances.”

Troi and Riker also talk about the death of their son Thad, which was established in the Picard season 1 episode “Nepenthe,” as was Riker’s hobby of making pizza, hence Troi’s joke “good in bed, bad at pizza.”

Picard’s Secret Codex Is Very Familiar

As Jack tries to hack the body of a Titan crewmember, we see that Jean-Luc Picard still loves using “Picard Alpha-Tango” as the base of his go-to password. In First Contact , Jean-Luc used the password “Picard 47, Alpha Tango” twice in two different contexts: once to unlock a message from Starfleet and again to set the self-destruct for the Enterprise-E . Here, we learn his security override is “12-11-Picard Alpha Tango 75.”

Kestra Riker-Troi

Riker and Troi talk a bit about their daughter, Kestra, and Will worries that if they die she will “have lost everyone.” One might wonder where Kestra is at this point. The answer it seems is that Kestra is already in an “early admissions program at Starfleet Academy.” Picard showrunner Terry Matalas confirmed this detail just before this episode aired. Really! Don’t worry about Kestra! She’s fine!

Troi mentions that she misses “Raktajino lattes.” Raktajino, is, of course, Klingon coffee, first mentioned in the Deep Space Nine episode “Dax.” Captain Benjamin Sisko absolutely loves drinking it.

That Time Worf Dated Troi

When Worf comes to rescue Will and Deanna, we hear the Jerry Goldsmith “Klingon Theme” and then Worf launches into a very emotional speech to Deanna. This references the fact that Worf and Deanna briefly dated on TNG following the events of the episode “Parallels.” In fact, in the alternate future in “All Good Things…” Deanna’s death in that timeline had driven a huge wedge between Worf and Riker. In the current, “real” TNG / Picard timeline, Worf and Riker are now both slightly older than they were in that future, and, of course, Deanna is alive.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Cloaked Shuttle Emerson

Raffi and Worf have a cloaked shuttle zipping around outside of the Titan . To be clear, they’re using the same cloaking tech stolen from the Bounty back in episode 6. (Again, this has been confirmed with showrunner Terry Matalas.)

Geordi Hates Picard’s Wine, Too

Throughout the season, various characters have thrown shade on the wine made at Jean-Luc’s family vineyard, Chateau Picard . In this episode, a memory of Geordi saying the wine was “too dry” is the latest example of a character not liking the wine. (FWIW, in real life, the wine is quite good. )

Data and Sherlock Holmes

When Lore and Data face off against each other in a kind of positronic mindscape, we’re hit with several references to Data’s love of Sherlock Holmes right away. Not only do we hear dialogue from the TNG episode “Elementary, Dear Data,” but we also see Data’s Holmes hat, as well as his pipe. In addition to Moriarty in “The Bounty,” this is the second episode of Picard season 3 to reference Sherlock Holmes in a huge way.

Tasha Yar, Spot the Cat, and Data’s Other Memories

Throughout the rest of the episode, we see Data seemingly “give up” his memories to Lore, which includes several references to TNG , including:

  • A TNG -era Tricorder.
  • A deck of playing cards, which Data says represents the “many games of poker” he played on the Enterprise , referencing various episodes, including “Cause and Effect,” “The Best of Both Worlds,” and “All Good Things…”
  • A hologram of Tasha Yar, from the episode “A Measure of Man,” which also references “Skin of Evil” and “The Naked Now” — the moment that Tasha discovered that Data was “fully functional.”
  • Spot! Data’s cat appeared in various TNG episodes beginning with “Data’s Day” and was last seen in Nemesis .

“Monologuing Protoplasms”

While not a direct reference, Data’s dig about “monologuing protoplasms,” feels like the kind of thing someone might say in Ghostbusters . Just me? Either way, it’s a hilarious moment, which sets up Vadic’s death when she says…

Vadic’s Death and Her “Fucking Solids” Final Words

Throughout DS9 , Changelings used the word “solids” pejoratively to describe anyone who wasn’t a shapeshifter. The fact that she is so exasperated in her moment of defeat that this is all Vadic says is both really dark and oddly funny at the same time. Best Star Trek villain death line ever?

Data Using Contractions

In “Datalore,” it was established that Data’s programming did not allow him to use contractions, a fact which was brought up again in “Future Imperfect.” Now that Data has evolved, Geordi is stunned to hear him use a contraction in Picard .

The Entire TNG Bridge Crew in the Conference Room, Together

We haven’t seen the “big seven” lead actors from TNG all in the same room together in Star Trek since the film Nemesis in 2002. This means it’s been 21 years in real life and 22 years in the Trek canon.

Troi Senses Jack Crusher’s Red Door

The final moments of the episode promise to take us through the “red door” in Jack’s mind, with Troi at his side. Though not explicitly a Trek reference, the idea of the “red door,” and the mystery around it, is vaguely reminiscent of the “red forest” in the series 12 Monkeys . That SyFy series was produced by Matalas and featured several actors who we’ve seen this season, including Kirk Acevedo (Krinn), Aaron Stanford (Sneed) , and of course, Todd Stashwick (Shaw) .

In that series, the mystery of the “red forest” turned out to not be exactly what the audience expected, meaning in the coming weeks, as Picard comes to its conclusion, we should be ready for a similar twist with the red door. Plus, after Picard is over, science fiction fans may want to binge a sci-fi series that they haven’t seen, and if you slept on 1 2 Monkeys , it might be the next best thing.

Description [ ]

Summary [ ], the end [ ].

Commodore Data , commander of the USS Enterprise -F , is on the Forever World to visit the Guardian of Forever . He views Captain James T. Kirk along with his crew leaving Forever World after Kirk allowed Edith Keeler to die in the past in order to prevent altering history.

Commodore data

Commodore Data .

Data wishes to touch and speak with the Guardian and so obtains the necessary permission from Mary Mac , an Orion scientist employed on Forever World.

Admiral William T. Riker , commander of Starbase 86 , receives a visit from his second-in-command, Lieutenant Dexter . Dexter informs him that the surveying ship Chance will be stopping at the base next week, that Starfleet is complaining that the base is not processing its 1021-JKQ forms rapidly enough, and that Riker has a personal communique from Betazed . Lwaxana Troi is dying and wishes to see Riker. Starfleet Command has sent the Hood , commanded by Captain Wesley Crusher to transport Riker to Betazed.

AdmiralRiker

Admiral William T. Riker .

Data and the Enterprise Science Officer Lieutenant Blair share a meal with the six scientists posted on Forever World. Answering a question of Data's, Mary Mac notes that Mar Loc has not been seen in a few days. Mary Mac and her assistant Harry relate a story of how research done at Forever World has recently led to the end of centuries of warfare between two planets: Gamma Delta and Gamma Origii . Mary Mac then tells Data she has something very interesting to show him. It is later revealed that she has learned that the death of Counselor Deanna Troi at the Sindareen peace conference was a 'focal point' in the timeline.

Wesley Crusher, now Captain of the Hood , discusses the past with Riker.

Upon arriving at Betazed, Riker and Crusher beam down and encounter Wendy Roper , now Wendy Berq, who mentions that her father, ( Mark Roper ) died about ten years earlier. Riker, Crusher, and Wendy, enter the Troi home and are greeted by Mr. Homn . The home is filled with furniture and memorabilia, although Lwaxana's bedroom is completely empty except for the bed which she is in. Riker apologizes to her, but just as she is dying, Lwaxana grabs him by the throat telling Riker that Deanna's death was his fault and that he should have saved her.

Riker attends Lwaxana's funeral as she is entombed in the Troi mausoleum next to her daughter, Deanna. Crusher and the Hood prepare to leave as Riker reveals that he will be staying on Betazed as Lwaxana's will dictated that he is to go through her memorabilia and catalog it. Crusher asks how Deanna dies and Riker prepares to tell him the whole story.

The End of the Beginning [ ]

Captain Picard summons Commander Riker to his ready room to discuss the upcoming Sindareen peace talks. The Sindareen have achieved several Pyrrhic victories over the Cordians, the Byfrexians, and the Luss, but have destroyed their own economy in the process and so now are suing for peace. Riker notes that Counselor Troi has had some experience with the Sindareen before, but won't go into further detail.

DeannaTroi

Deanna Troi .

Riker goes to Troi's quarters only to find that she was in bed with Dann Lendann , an old friend. Riker goes to Ten-Forward and discusses the situation with Guinan . Troi enters, angry with Riker for the way he acted, and Riker apologizes to her and they make up.

The peace conference begins aboard the Enterprise now in orbit over Sindar . Troi notes that Sindareens can be difficult to emotionally read, but she believes that they genuinely want peace. Eza , an aide to Nici , the Sindareen ambassador is not enthusiastic about the proceedings. Dann sits next to Troi and leaves with his arm around her waist.

Riker wakes up in his quarters as Troi screams "Imzadi" in his mind. He calls for Dr. Crusher to meet him in Troi's quarters and he races there only to find she is in convulsions, a confused Dann standing beside her. Dr. Crusher and Dr. Selar arrive shortly after, but Troi dies a few moments later.

Epilogue [ ]

Riker finishes telling his story to Captain Wesley Crusher. Crusher leaves and Riker goes to the Troi house to begin going through Lwaxana's possessions. He finds that Deanna has kept several items that remind Riker of his early relationship with her including a poem that he wrote for her. He finally breaks down and begins to cry.

The Beginning [ ]

Lieutenant William Riker prepares to leave the USS Fortuna when Captain Lansing and his crew throw him a surprise going away party. Kathy Li , who had a relationship with Riker, has baked him a cupcake - her nickname for him. Riker has been promoted to first officer of the USS Hood , but the Hood was damaged in an attack by Sindareen Raiders and so will be undergoing repairs in dry dock for two to three months. During that time, Riker will be stationed at the Federation Embassy on Betazed .

Riker arrives at the Federation Embassy on Betazed to take up his post as Starfleet Liaison. Mark Roper, head of the Embassy, appears to be completely overwhelmed with work. Roper is scheduled to go to the wedding of Chandra Xerx, but doesn't have time. Riker agrees to go in his place and will accompany his daughter, Wendy.

Riker and Wendy attend the wedding of Chandra Xerx. He is embarrassed to find out that at Betazed weddings, the bridal party as well as the guests attend in the nude. Although initially refusing to strip, he eventually does. Deanna Troi is the maid of honor and Riker sees her and can't stop thinking about her in a sexual way. Deanna turns around and stares at him as Riker realizes that she knows exactly what he is thinking.

Riker meets with Mark Roper and learns more about Deanna and Lwaxana Troi.

Riker goes to the University of Betazed in order to "accidentally" run into Deanna. She tries to quickly leave, but he is persistent. Later, Troi returns returns home and Lwaxana tells Deanna that she will have to represent the family at a reception for the Rigelian Ambassador taking place at the Federation Embassy.

At the reception, Deanna makes it clear that she is uninterested in Riker, but agrees to go out on a date with him anyway.

Riker runs into Sergeant Roger Tang who advises him not to get involved with local girls. At the Troi mansion, Lwaxana Troi meets Riker and tells him that she won't let anything get in the way of Deanna's destiny. They go on a picnic and Riker kisses Deanna unexpectedly. They discuss love and careers and Riker agrees to be Deanna's guinea pig for an experiment to see if she can change his psychological makeup.

Riker and Mark Roper sit down at a cafe and discuss Riker's relationship with Deanna. Roper says that Riker is "not her type", meaning Riker isn't intellectual enough, and bets Riker 200 credits that he will never "become intimate" with her.

Troi takes Riker to the Betazed museum of art. He has difficultly appreciating any of the artwork. Troi takes Riker outside to a tree and challenges him to hang from a branch longer than she can. She wins and says it is because she is able to separate her mind from her body. She falls from the tree and Riker catches her. He is then able to hear her commands in his mind.

Deanna gets into a fight with her mother over Riker and her family obligations. Meanwhile, Riker is frustrated when he doesn't understand a Betazoid philosophy primer. He tries to contact Deanna for several days to no avail. Roger Tang is excited to show Riker their new shoulder mounted phaser weapons and they are having a conversation about women when Wendy Roper walks in, mentioning to Riker that she would like to see him more often.

Riker goes to the University to find Deanna and finds that he is able to project his thought into her mind. She takes him to a secluded lake front and telling him its a new experimental technique, they lay naked together, talking all night. When Deanna arrives home, Lwaxana is furious and reminds her of her purpose in life.

Gart Xerx is having breakfast with Mark Roper, who gets up to leave when Riker arrives. Xerx asks about Deanna and when Riker asks about nude therapy, Xerx reveals that there is no such thing. While they are eating, Sergeant Tang calls Riker letting him know that the Sindareen have entered orbit and appear to be about to attack the city.

Deanna Troi and Chandra Xerx are at the art museum discussing Riker when Nine Sindareen raiders, led by Maror , burst in intent on stealing the artwork. The round up all the Betazeds they can find for hostages. Hirsch, the Starfleet communications expert taps into the Sindareen comm system so that Riker can speak to the invaders. Maror angrily shoots Chandra in the leg in response to Riker's call for surrender.

Gart Xerx is able to telepathically communicate with his daughter Chandra and Riker learns everything about the hostage situation. When Maror attempts to take Chandra, Deanna gets in the way so Maror knocks Chandra unconscious and takes Deanna instead. The Starfleet security team was able to kill eight of the nine raiders who had exited the ship, but Maror survives and takes Deanna to the ship with him. The ship begins to take off, but Sergeant Tang is able to cripple it with his Model II phaser cannon. The ship crashes in the Jalara Jungle .

Maror and and Deanna survive the crash and trudge through the jungle for several days. Maror is frustrated that Deanna is not begging for her life and finally Deanna attempts her escape just as Maror is about to kill her. She gets away briefly, but just as she is captured again Riker arrives on the scene. He surprises Maror and fights him for a while, but Maror is able to regain control of his blaster and prepares to kill Riker. But Maror backs into a mud pit and sinks under the mud in seconds.

Riker and Troi have sex and she reveals that he is her first partner. She calls him "Imzadi" for the first time.

After five days, Riker and Troi make it back to rendezvous with the rest of the Starfleet personnel. Deanna tells Riker to come over to her house that night to talk to her mother. Mark Roper wants all of the details, but Riker claims that nothing happened and that he lost the bet.

Riker arrives at the Troi home, and although Lwaxana is forced to thank him for saving Deanna's life, she is furious that he "took advantage of her." Lwaxana demands that he leave and when Deanna appears, she agrees, telling Riker that it was a mistake to get involved.

Riker is depressed and gets drunk on scotch. Wendy Roper comes to his room and they end up in bed together. Deanna and her mother fight about her destiny and she tells her mother that she is her own woman and she can do whatever she wants. She decides to go find Riker to reconcile.

Deanna goes to the Embassy, only to find Riker in bed with Wendy. She goes home in disgust. Deanna and her mother partly reconcile and Lwaxana tells her that she had terrible fights with her own mother over her love for Deanna's father, Ian .

Roper tells Riker that the Hood has finished its repairs ahead of schedule and Riker is to ship out within twenty-four hours. He sees Deanna at the art museum one last time and they talk, but neither says goodbye to the other.

As the USS Enterprise -D orbits Deneb IV, Riker, now a Commander and First officer meets the new Counselor who turns out to be Deanna. They still have feelings for each other, but too much time has passed and their relationship never returns to its previous state.

Back in 2368 , the night Riker walked in on Dann and Deanna, he is now in bed in his quarters when he realizes there is an intruder in the room. It turns out to be Admiral Riker, who tells Riker that Deanna's life depends on what he does next.

The Middle [ ]

Riker donates Lwaxana's effects to the Betazed museum as the Enterprise arrives to transport him back to Starbase 86. Data informs him that he has learned that Deanna's death is a 'focal point' in time and that she lives in an alternate timeline. In that timeline, she detected the Sindareen were lying at the peace conference and the Federation refused to sign the peace treaty with them, eventually leading the Sindareen into a serious economic collapse which forced them to genuinely ask for help; in the current timeline, they used the Federation's aid to give them time to secretly rebuild their military forces and strike again. Riker orders the Enterprise to return to Betazed.

After retrieving the body of Deanna Troi from Betazed, Riker orders an autopsy to determine the cause of Death. Dr. Crusher had never been able to determine the cause of death. Now, forty years later, they discover that she was poisoned with Raxatocin , a poison that had only been developed thirteen years earlier. Riker believes that someone has traveled back in time to kill Deanna, thereby altering history. He wants to travel to the Guardian of Forever to fix it, but Data refuses saying that Starfleet regulations clearly do not permit tampering with the timeline, and that the evidence in favour of Riker's theory is comparatively slim as Raxatocin has been known to occur in nature. Riker gives in and agrees to return to Starbase 86. There, Riker appears resigned to his fate and for several days does nothing, but finally he angrily knocks over the large grandfather clock in his office and prepares to act.

When the Chance arrives, Riker beams aboard and tells Captain Tennant that he is on a top secret mission from Starfleet. He has fabricated the relevant orders and the Chance warps out of orbit. Lieutenant Dexter informs Data that Riker is missing and Data, knowing precisely what he is attempting to do, orders the Enterprise to the Forever World.

Imzadi-planet

By the time the Enterprise arrives, the Chance is already in orbit. Data finally makes contact with Captain Tennant by threatening to destroy the Chance . Tennant reveals that Riker has already beamed down to the surface. Data and Lieutenant Blair beam down to the planet's surface. Riker has already stunned the scientists on the planet's surface, but Mary Mac is missing. When they arrive at the Guardian, they find that Riker has used her to access the Guardian and is currently holding her hostage. He knocks her out and Data is unable to convince him not to interfere in the timeline. Data orders the Enterprise to fire on the force field surrounding the Guardian, but it is strong enough to hold until Riker is able to leap through the Guardian and enter the past.

Riker arrives on the Enterprise -D in the middle of one of Lieutenant Barclay 's holodeck programs. After posing as a security program designed to activate if Barclay attempted to access such programs, scaring Barclay into never using the holodeck again, Riker heads to his younger self's quarters to warn him about Deanna.

Admiral Riker gives Commander Riker the antidote for the poison and tells him that Troi will be dead in fifteen minutes. He is convinced of the truth when Admiral Riker cites a few lines of the love poem that he wrote for Deanna in the Jalara Jungle. Commander Riker is ready to interfere and he races out to Deanna's quarters.

Riker gives Troi the antidote and tells her to drink it. Dann tries to prevent her from doing so but Riker throws him across the room. Dann is revealed to be a Chameloid and Deanna drinks down the antidote just as she begins to feel a burning sensation.

Worf brings the Chameloid to the brig while Picard, Troi, and Commander Riker return to Riker's quarters to find Admiral Riker still there. Riker tells them that he was there to save Deanna's life, but refuses to give any more details. He surmises that the Chameloid is Lt. Blair and that Deanna's life is still in danger since he is still in the past.

Commodore Data has also arrived in the past and has tricked Lieutenant Commander Data to meet him in his quarters. Barclay runs into both of them in the halls and thinks he is going crazy. When Data arrives in his quarters, his future self turns him off and hides him in a closet so that he can take his place on the ship and kill Troi himself.

Picard goes to Ten-Forward to discuss the situation with Guinan, but she is unable to tell if there are any serious disturbances in the space-time continuum, explaining that she is only 'sensitive' to changes in the past while events in the present unfold for her in the same way as everyone else. Data walks in and asks whey there are guards posted around Troi's quarters. Picard tells him the current situation.

Adm. Riker has concealed a miniature phaser in his heel and uses it to burn through the wall into the next room. He escapes, heading for the peace conference. Data arrives at the conference ahead of Riker and gets Troi to leave with him by telling her that Adm. Riker is near death in sickbay.

Adm. Riker finds Data's head in his quarters and he tells Data- worrying that Data would side with his future self if he knew the truth- that he is an alternate version of Riker, and that the enemy is Lore who is intent on killing Troi for unknown reasons. Data can control his body remotely, so Riker leaves, carrying Data's head while Data controls his body behind them.

Cmdr. Riker realizes that Data has used a contraction and sends a mental warning to Troi just as Data is about to kill her. Riker and Picard attempt to stop Data, but due to his superior strength (and the fact that he has removed his off switch) are unable to.

Meanwhile, Troi has realized that the Sindareens are there under false pretenses and do not want peace. She shouts her conclusions aloud as Eza, aide to the Sindareen Ambassader, pulls a miniature phaser from his sleeve. But before he can kill Troi, Adm. Riker throws Data's head through the air hitting Eza in the chest. Data's body slams Troi to the ground protecting her from further attacks. Adm. Riker realizes that Eza must be from the future as well; it was he who had originally altered the past by killing Troi. Now that Deanna's life is no longer in danger, Riker, Data, and Eza fade away.

Riker visits Deanna in her quarters and mentions that the Chameloid has disappeared as well. Data has told him that Adm. Riker claims that it was Lore who attempted to kill Troi, but Riker is not so sure, although he is content to allow Data to assume that version of events is the truth as he believes that Data finds it difficult to accept that any version of him could want to kill his friend. Riker has made her a present; it is a copy of the white headband Troi had at the end of Chandra Xerx's wedding. Although still unsure about their relationship, they make love and agree to give their relationship another chance.

The Beginning of the End [ ]

Guardian

The Guardian of Forever .

The four time-travelers come out of the Guardian and Mary Mac recognizes Eza as Mar Loc, the missing scientist. The Guardian says "All is ... as it was" confirming that Riker has corrected the timeline and not destroyed it; the Guardian had simply never clarified the issue for those using it because nobody had actually asked if the current timeline was wrong or not. Riker realizes that Mary Mac's unexplained bruise was a spray-hypo mark. Mar Loc must have shot Mary Mac up with something while she left and used her to access the Guardian. Data realizes that he made several clumsy mistakes in his recent trip to the past and Riker believes it was Data's unconscious at work. As they prepare to leave Forever World to find out what the 'true' timeline is like, Riker can sense Deanna's voice in his head welcoming him home.

  • "Second Chances" invalidates the account of how Will and Deanna's relationship ended detailed in "Imzadi". Deanna explains to Will's duplicate, who would become known as Thomas, that their romance ended when Will didn't meet her on Risa as they planned, choosing instead to focus on his career.
  • In Chapter 12, Roper says that "Betazed is a long-standing Federation ally." This statement, along with other contextual clues throught the book would seem to indicate that Betazed is not actually a member of the Federation. However, in the continuity of other non-canon sources the are a member world.

Star Trek: Picard 's Final Season Almost Had Even More Voyager and DS9 Cameos

The return of ensign naomi wildman in this post-scarcity economy.

Image for article titled Star Trek: Picard's Final Season Almost Had Even More Voyager and DS9 Cameos

Star Trek: Picard ’s third and final season had a lot going on —and that’s even before you throw in half the regular cast of The Next Generation , and then some, showing up as the weeks went on. But it turns out, there were almost even more returning faces—and not necessarily just from TNG .

Speaking to Master Replicas Collectors Club members in a Zoom Q&A recently (via TrekMovie ), Picard showrunner and perpetual hoper-for-a-spinoff Terry Matalas revealed that Picard almost brought back several figures from across TNG ’s sister series, Voyager and Deep Space Nine , at various points across the third season.

One prominent addition would’ve been the return of Scarlett Pomers’ Naomi Wildman—the Human/Ktarian child who became the first baby to be born aboard Voyager during its time in the Delta Quadrant, growing into a young acting ensign, regular confidant of Seven of Nine, and Captain Janeway’s assistant. According to Matalas, Naomi’s return would’ve been an important character beat for Seven , but the season’s 10-episode runtime necessitated the episode’s removal.

“There was an episode once the Titan was on the run and it needed to hide. And so we had this idea of Seven bringing them to sort of like space Tortuga, like spacedock for pirates where the Fenris Rangers were. And she gets help from an older Naomi Wildman who had also followed in her footsteps as a Fenris Ranger and was a badass. But Seven realizes she sort of created a monster because Naomi had become harder than she was,” Matalas explained. “And so it was it was a Seven/Naomi story. We broke the story and we had reached out to the actress who played Naomi. But it just didn’t feel—if you had 13 episodes, you were doing this for sure. But if you had 10, you’re like, ‘I need to get to LeVar [Burton].’ It’s time to get there.”

Further cut cameos would’ve come in the climax of the season, when the Federation—gathering Starfleet’s finest to celebrate Frontier Day—found itself under attack and taken over by a rogue Borg infection targeting the younger generations of Starfleet officers. But as they were mostly related to Star Trek: Voyager , the concurrently airing Star Trek: Prodigy ’s narrative dealing with those legacy characters presented a potential conflict.

“Harry Kim appeared as the captain of the Voyager -B in the first draft of Frontier Day. But Prodigy was telling a lot of Voyager stories and we didn’t know if Harry was going to appear and we didn’t want to step on their toes,” Matalas continued. “But yeah, for me, I would have had as many as we could get. I would have made that Star Trek Avengers: Endgame . I would have made Frontier Day with many ships… I would have Kira [Nerys, Nana Visitor’s character from Deep Space Nine ] there, even if all you get is a bridge shot. But all of that is very expensive. We were already way too ambitious.”

This also included Kate Mulgrew’s Kathryn Janeway , who also appears on Prodigy —in both a hologram of her captaincy days and in physical form as a current Starfleet Admiral—and almost appeared to set the stage promoting Seven to the new captain of the Titan , rechristened into the Enterprise -G. “It would have felt like if we had put Janeway in the in the finale, specifically in the last scene where [Seven of Nine] is promoted... it might have overwhelmed the scene and made it more about Janeway and less about Seven of Nine,” Matalas concluded.

It makes sense to remove a lot of these—especially given how much Picard was already doing weaving in the Next Generation cast at large already. Plus, as nice and nostalgic as it would’ve been, it would’ve detracted that this is at least a very specific goodbye to Picard and that very specific set of TNG characters. Well, that is until that movie Patrick Stewart keeps talking about comes out, I guess. Maybe we can get some cameos then.
