See Luke Combs’ Setlist From Opening Night of His World Tour

Luke Combs had the crowd at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in the palm of his hand on Saturday (March 25). It was opening night of his World Tour, and the "Going, Going, Gone" singer did what he does best: Kept it simple and let the music speak for itself.

After several openers —  Riley Green , Lainey Wilson , Flatland Cavalry and Brent Cobb  — Combs captivated the audience song after song. He opened the show with roaring rendition of "Lovin' on You" that got the sold-out stadium crowd on their feet, singing along. He kept the energy up with "Hannah Ford Road" and "Cold as You" before gently coaxing the audience into his more sentimental songs.

Combs gave his band their time in the spotlight, too, as he introduced them to the crowd. He stepped back and allowed them to take center stage as they covered a few recognizable choruses: "Dust on the Bottle" (David Lee Murphy), "Meet in the Middle" (Diamond Rio) and "When I Was Your Man" (Bruno Mars).

The North Carolina native also took a moment to himself. He told the audience he likes to perform one song solo at each show, and after grabbing his guitar, Combs delivered his non-drinking drinking song "Joe."

He gave some backstory prior to performing "Houston, We Got a Problem." He revealed that his first tour stop after signing a record deal was in Texas. He had just met now-wife Nicole, whom he described as "the woman who would eventually change my life." Both the state and his newfound love inspired him to write the song as soon as he returned to Nashville.

After hitting everyone in the feels with the songs inspired by his bride, Combs began revving up the engine again. He finished out his set with "Beer Never Broke My Heart," but as everyone knows, there's always an encore — and he still hadn't played one of his biggest songs.

The audience shouted in delight when the opening guitar riff of "The Kind of Love We Make" rang out from the stage. Combs returned to give the fans what they wanted, diving headfirst into his rendition of "Brand New Man." He brought Wilson, Green and Cobb out to join him before closing out the show.

Just one day before the tour launched, the "Doin' This" singer released a new album titled Gettin' Old . Despite its newness, the crowd had clearly done their homework: With each song, you could hear thousands of people singing back every lyric, word for word.

Combs' World Tour will pick up again on Saturday, April 1, in Indianapolis, Ind. The trek will continue through Oct. 19, with Combs and his crew jetting off to New Zealand, Australia and Europe during the second half.

Luke Combs' 2023 World Tour Opening Night Setlist:

Country Superstar Luke Combs Kicks Off His Record Breaking World Tour in Arlington, and Shares Deep Love for Texas

C ountry superstar Luke Combs kicked off his World Tour in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Stadium on Saturday, March 25, 2023. It’s the first of his sixteen slated North American stadium shows, all of which are complete sell-outs. In fact, as of this weekend, there are only two international stops with any remaining seats ― but you’ll have to travel to either Hamburg, Germany, or Zurich, Switzerland to snag those.

Seriously, Hamburg and Zurich, what are you waiting for?

It’s the largest tour ever for a country artist, bringing one of the genre’s biggest names to some 39 shows across three continents and 16 different countries. That’s right, a country singer is selling out stadiums not just in Texas and Tennessee, but also in Australia, New Zealand, the U.K., Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, France, and Belgium. That’s how far Combs’ sultry and instantly recognizable voice has traveled so far.

The popularity of Luke Combs cannot be underestimated. He remains the CMA Entertainer of the Year, after receiving that award for the second-consecutive year last November. He’s a member of the Grand Ole Opry and an eight-time CMA, three-time ACM, and three-time  Billboard  Music Award-winner, with hits including Going, Going, Gone , Beautiful Crazy, and Beer Never Broke My Heart . I’ll bet, just like me, you’re already humming along.

New Music And Gettin’ Old

Combs’ newest album, Gettin’ Old (a companion to last year’s Growin’ Up) , was just released on Friday, March 24 ahead of his world tour’s kick-off concert in Arlington. This is where the balladeer really hits his stride, making the most of his powerful vocal range, legendary salty tone, and storytelling prowess. You feel every verse, and it’s easy to make these songs your own.

It’s interesting to put the Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old album covers side by side. On one, you see a youthful smirk on the singer’s face with a honkey tonk in the background. On the newest album, the smirk is gone. His expression on Gettin’ Old has been replaced with a knowing realism, and in the background is a ranch-style home with its wrap-around porch. How quickly priorities change.

“This album is about the stage of life I’m in right now” Luke Combs admits. “It’s about coming of age, loving where life is now but at the same time missing how it used to be, continuing to fall for the one you love and loving them no matter what, living in the moment but still wondering how much time you have left, family, friends, being thankful, and leaving a legacy.”

luke combs tour stage setup

That’s heady stuff ― a lot to ponder, but Combs takes it all on, over the course of 18 soulful tracks, on his new album. And, the first song sets the stage. It’s called Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old ― one of four album tracks he had advanced prior to Friday’s release ― including Joe (that Combs wrote for those struggling with alcohol addiction and choosing to live a sober life), Love You Anyway , and 5 Leaf Clover , which he released on St. Paddy’s Day.

“A while back my buddy Newdy and I were looking around the clover plot at my house for four-leaf clovers,” Combs says of his new song by the same name. “I eventually found one, but shortly thereafter, he found a five-leaf clover and I thought to myself, ‘Man, how lucky do you have to be to find a five-leaf clover?’”

Kicking Off The World Tour In Arlington

The crowd arrived early to hear a line-up of four other warm-up acts — including Brent Cobb, Flatland Cavalry, Lainey Wilson, and Riley Green ― before the headliner hit the big stage, dressed in his trademark black Columbia PFG shirt, blue jeans, and a black trucker hat branded with Blue Otter Polarized (his sponsored brand of Watauga style sunglasses).

The crowd erupted each time Combs flashed his innocent smile, and he was seen carting around his other notable on-stage prop ― a Solo cup ― but at this show, Combs had switched from his traditional red Solo to blue. They were stacked four deep by the end of the evening. He opened his first tour date with the song Lovin’ On You .

“I put a new album out yesterday,” Luke Combs explained to a knowing audience.

The first selection off his new album was  Love You Anyway , which the crowd seemed to already know by heart. They sang back up loud and proud on many of his biggest hits, earning their own solo performances from time to time like on One Number Away . And, when Combs sang his 5 Leaf Clover (which has been out for less than 10 days), and the crowd already knew every line ― the singer seemed astonished, and couldn’t stop smiling in appreciation.

“Here we are 50-something thousand deep at AT&T Stadium,” Combs noted at one point.

So, let’s get the obvious criticism out of the way. It’s too bad that Texas’ only shot at seeing Luke Combs on this tour was in AT&T Stadium, with its notably underwhelming acoustics. It’s a concrete cavern, built for sporting events, unlike Dallas’ American Airlines Center or Fort Worth’s Dickies Arena ― both of which were built with acoustics in mind. That’s why Paul McCartney’s only Texas stop last year was at Dickies Arena instead.

While Luke Combs was a great show, and achieved the goal of one tour stop in the great state of Texas, packing in the fans ― it could have been so much better in a better venue ― one designed for music. Now, back to the show.

“It all started with me and my blue guitar,” Combs reminded his fans, as he donned his famous cobalt blue acoustic guitar for the first time to sing Going, Going, Gone . His name shimmered in inlaid mother of pearl on its fret.

One groom-to-be had all the single women swooning (and all their boyfriends kicking themselves) during Combs’ Forever After All ― as his proposal was spotlighted on the big screen. As if that wasn’t memorable enough, Combs relayed his guitar pick to the happy couple as an added souvenir.

“I’m 33 years old and moved to Nashville nine years ago,” Combs said in the lead-up to his ode to Texas, Houston, We Got A Problem . “The first place I went after I got a record deal was the great state of Texas. I’m not sure if there’s any place on God’s green earth that I love more than Texas.”

It seems Texas agrees. There are few country artists that fans love more than Luke Combs.

Luke Combs is in the middle of his blockbuster 2023 world tour, which will take him across the US, the UK, Norway, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark, France, Switzerland and more.

Those who were fortunate enough to get their hands on tickets have been keenly looking forward to seeing which songs the North Carolina hitmaker is performing.

Combs has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to choosing which hits to perform, but his much-loved beer-drenched anthems such as ‘When It Rains It Pours’, ‘Beer Never Broke My Heart’, ‘1, 2 Many’ and ‘Cold As You’ have all kept their places in his setlist.

With that in mind, it's been fascinating to see Combs also performing his new ode to a recovering alcoholic, ‘Joe’ , on a handful of his 2023 tour stops.

The North Carolina hitmaker outlined that the evocative track was written for listeners who might be able to empathise with the story, and may therefore find it challenging to enjoy his alcohol-themed part-starting tracks.

Here you can find Luke Combs’ updated setlist as he embarks on his 2023 world tour.

Luke Combs dropped his brand new album, Gettin’ Old , on March 24, the day before his tour started. ‘ Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old ’ made its way into his opening night setlist as the fan-voted song, which was perhaps unsurprising, given its importance for both the new project and his previous release, Growin’ Up.

Since then, other surprise, occasional inclusions have been ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ and ‘Refrigerator Door’, the latter of which featured on Luke's 2019 What You See Is What You Get album.

Excitingly, two of Luke's support acts, Riley Green and Lainey Wilson, have been joining him on stage during the tour to perform ‘Does To Me’ and ‘Outrunnin’ Your Memory’ respectively.

Although he's become renowned for the rowdy, high-energy atmosphere he engenders at his electrifying live shows, Luke Combs always leaves room for a few breathers when he performs much-loved ballads, such as ‘Better Together’, ‘Beautiful Crazy’ and ‘Forever After All’.

Luke Combs has also been treating fans to a live rendition of ‘Fast Car’, his eye-catching Tracy Chapman cover, along with his latest single, ‘5 Leaf Clover’ , both of which appear on Gettin’ Old.

Other new songs he's been performing include ‘Hannah Ford Road’ and ‘Love You Anyway’, while Luke still ends his sets with his high-octane cover of Brooks & Dunn's ‘Brand New Man’.

In announcing the tour, Combs is cognizant of the increasing prices people are paying for everything from groceries to gas, and he is adamant about keeping his concert ticket prices affordable.

“I know that the price of everything has been going up these last couple years and there’s nothing I can do about that, but the one thing I could do is set the price of my tickets,” Combs said via a statement. “So, what I wanted to do was keep the ticket prices the same as they were before the pandemic. I really really hope you guys will come out and check us out. Can’t wait to see you on the road!”

Combs added via a statement, “I’ve been working on this album on and off for two and a half years now. It was sort of a crazy process through what COVID brought, and what that meant for our touring life last year. It made me have to put a pause on this album for a second, but I’m just really stoked that it’s finally coming out. Working with Chip Matthews and Jonathan Singleton as a producer has been really great and I think that the fans are going to love these songs. I’m just excited to get them out and see what they think.”

Prior to his tour, Combs will make a headlining performance to close out the Stagecoach festival in Indio, Calif., on May 1, and will also headline festivals including New Orleans JazzFest and BottleRock in Napa Valley, Calif. in May. He also has sold-out stadium shows set for Denver’s Empower Field at Mile High (May 21), Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium (July 30) and Seattle’s Lumen Field (June 4).

"A supernatural song writer": Luke Combs praises Tracy Chapman as 'Fast Car' tops charts

Luke Combs is burning up the charts with Tracy Chapman's 'Fast Car'

The performances add to yet another triumphant year for Combs, whose new version of Tracy Chapman’s Grammy-winning "Fast Car" has spent five consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. This is Combs’ 16th consecutive No. 1 single on country radio.

The song was recently certified double-platinum, has garnered over 435 million global streams and is No. 2 this week on Billboard’s Hot 100. "Fast Car" is the first song by a male solo artist to ever top both the Hot AC and Country Airplay charts.

Combs’ latest album, "Gettin' Old," is a companion to his acclaimed 2022 record, "Growin' Up." The New York Times praised the album as "grounded in country, complete with fiddle fills, but it’s also pointed toward a wide pop audience" while Billboard proclaimed, "His electrifying-yet-earthy voice soundtracking this time in his life as a husband, father and entertainer at the top of his game."

American Songwriter summed it up with, "He’s a rock star at this point."

Last weekend, the country star made headlines for going the extra mile to help fans out when he gave a pair of young concertgoers cash to cover the cost of their tickets after discovering 12-year-old Bo Fenderson and Tanner Hale spent 10 hours stacking wood in order to make money to purchase the tickets for last Friday's show in Bangor, Maine.

While performing, Combs spotted a the boys holding a sign and read about their journey aloud from the stage, according to local NBC affiliate WCSH . At that point, he opened up his wallet and gave the pair $140 to help cover the ticket costs.

"How much were you tickets? $100? $200? Y'all paid $200, a hundred dollars apiece. Oh my God, I only got $140 right here," the singer said, according to CBS affiliate WABI . "Y'all want that, pay yourselves back. I'll get you some more."

Earlier this week, before starting his Saturday night concert at Maine Savings Amphitheater, Combs told concertgoers that he refunded everyone's tickets and would play for free due to vocal issues.

"I have to let you know that I have refunded all of your tickets. As of 7 p.m. today, a few hours ago, I realized that I was not going to be able to sing as good as I normally do," he said in a surprising announcement that was captured on video by numerous fans.

"[My voice is not] what I think it should be for you guys having to pay for it," he continued , adding: "So, we're going to put on the best free show we could put on, and I want you guys to know how upset I am to have to tell you that tonight, but all I want you to know is that we're going to do the very damn best."

‘Fun-enough tunes. Big choruses. Nice guy.’: A Canadian journalist watches his first American country music show

Our writer braved the rain and (another) thunderstorm warning to watch Luke Combs at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field. Here’s what he thought.

Luke Combs performing Friday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. He played also played Saturday, wrapping the U.S. portion of his world tour.

Country-pop chart-topper Luke Combs wrapped the U.S. leg of his 2023 world tour with a pair of weekend shows at Lincoln Financial Field. Friday night’s concert was beset by rain delays , lightning, mass confusion, and, finally, a late-night set that ran into the wee hours of Saturday morning. (Buzz around the Linc was that the organizers happily forked over the fine for violating the city’s 11:30 p.m. curfew. The fee, one presumes, would probably be far less than refunding a sold-out crowd.)

Saturday’s concert suffered its own weather setbacks, as an early-evening rainstorm delayed openers Lainey Wilson and Riley Green. But the full touring retinue would take the stage, in due time, culminating with a triumphant headlining set by Combs, whose music this reporter hadn’t, until this evening, heard much of.

As a Canadian living in America, I’ve had the U.S. country-pop industrial apparatus largely under my radar. That said: As a native of the land that exported Shania Twain, I’m well aware that, for some time now, country music has long been (some kind of) pop, or mainstream radio rock, shellacked with a little twang, and decked out in a Stetson (or, of late, mesh-back trucker cap).

So it was no real surprise that an artist I’d seldom heard, who — as he boasted Saturday night — has moved millions upon millions of records, could sell out a football stadium. For his part, Combs seems like a genuinely likable guy: affable, with an easy smile, resembling an old-timey lumberjack, or bottom-of-the-card regional wrestler.

A filmed trailer splashed on big screens before the show set up his hard-luck story: a guy from nowhere (aren’t they all?), who made it big, despite all odds. What odds?, I found myself wondering.

I suppose he’s not exactly tabloid handsome; but then country and western music’s history is riven with faces whose ruddiness stands as a measure of their authenticity.

That country music is as slick and polished as any popular genre — if not slicker and even more polished — is an obvious observation. Combs’ big, flashy stage show had a well-oiled, routinized, exactingly professional feel. Every humbling thank you to the crowd seemed scripted, every “surprise” guest appearance (by openers Green and Wilson) timed like clockwork. And that’s fine.

What sticks out about Combs — and country-pop at its most mainstream, stadium-scaled level — is not its slickness, but its underlying desire to seem un-slick . “Thank you for supporting country music!” the guys holler from the stage, as if it’s some struggling, little-engine-that-could genre. As if Nashville isn’t basically the new epicenter of the American culture industry. Like they don’t have brand sponsorships advertised on jumbotrons and QR codes flashing on screen that link to merch stores selling $80 vented button-up fishing shirts. As if they’re not playing in a professional football stadium where a beer costs, at the low end, $16.50 a can.

Also — and I swear I’m not trying to be overly salty — I found it a bit weird when Combs said that his song “Beautiful Crazy” was his first dance at his wedding. Playing your own song as the first dance at your wedding just seems a little me-me-me to me. But I suppose his wife was probably into it. The song’s about her, after all.

At the end of the day: fun-enough tunes. Big choruses. Nice guy. People openly weeping and singing along to every word. I would never dare begrudge anyone their version of a good time.

Luke Combs Honors Toby Keith, Performs “Fast Car” In Private Performance at the Ryman

A lthough admittedly still star-struck from his gripping “Fast Car” duet with Tracy Chapman, Luke Combs still managed to captivate a private audience all by his lonesome.

The country singer performed his cover of Chapman’s timeless folk-rock classic during a private 90-minute acoustic set Tuesday at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. In attendance were nearly 500 winners of “Living Lucky With Luke Combs,” the artist’s scratch-off ticket game partnership with Atlas and North American Lotteries across 15 U.S. states.

The grand prize event involved flying winners from across the nation to Nashville for prizes, including chances at $10,000 and a private concert from Combs. One fan in attendance also won $500,000, The Tennessean reported.

Combs Honors Chapman At Concert

Only 48 hours before the concert, Combs had stood mere feet from Chapman as the two performed “Fast Car” at the 66th GRAMMYs. The North Carolina native’s cover of the 1988 hit was named Song of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards, making Chapman the first Black songwriter to ever take home the award.

Combs’ reverence for Chapman — whom he called “one of the reasons I started singing” — was palpable onstage at the GRAMMYs. The two traded off verses, joining forces for the chorus, as Combs looked to her for cues. As the last note rang out, Combs immediately gestured toward the 59-year-old artist, leaving no question that he gave her all the credit.

Now you’ve heard Tracy do it, which is way better,” Combs told the crowd at Ryman. “But now you get to hear me do it.”

“It’s a lot of pressure playing this after the other night,” he added, before launching into his country-infused rendition.

Combs Obliges Audience’s Request for Keith Tribute

At fans’ urging, Combs also honored Toby Keith with his rendition of the late country star’s first No. 1 hit, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”

Keith died Monday night at age 62 after a two-year battle with stomach cancer.

“I’m glad you guys asked because we didn’t know if we should do a Toby song,” Combs said . “It’s good to know you love Toby’s music as much as we do.”
