Yes! As well as providing financial protection in case things go wrong during your trip, travel insurance will also mean that you have cancellation cover if you can’t go for certain reasons. We recommend purchasing at the time of booking or through our referral link with Travel Insured International (you may also purchase insurance from other providers and provide this evidence to us). Travel insurance policies can be very complex, so we’d recommend that you do your research and carefully read policy documents to determine what is and isn’t included.

Hotels routinely ask for a credit card to be placed on hold for INCIDENTALS or a SECURITY DEPOSIT. As long as there are no issues with the hotel room (no damage and no outstanding room service balances), you should receive the deposit back.

RESORT FEES or hotel PARKING FEES are NOT included in your trip pricing. We cannot collect this fee on behalf of the hotel due to the fact these fees often change and are out of our control. Therefore, you will be responsible for paying resort fees and/or parking fees with the hotel directly, upon arrival.

If you have any questions regarding incidentals and resort fees, please contact the hotel directly.

Airport Fees:

If you are traveling internationally, you’ll be charged U.S. and foreign departure taxes and fees in addition to your package price. These taxes and fees vary depending on your departure city and destination, and may change if the government changes the fees between the time you book and the time you travel. Passengers are responsible for any changes in taxes and fees. Tours may also include a processing fee that varies by destination. When you price your trip, all airport fees and processing fees will be included in your final price.

Change Fees:

Changes are no problem as long as our suppliers can accommodate the request. We can’t make any guarantees, but we do promise to make every effort on your behalf. There is a per person fee for changing a reservation in any way once All Roads Travel has received your deposit. Adding customers to an existing reservation is NOT considered a change. Change fees will be applied for, but are not limited to, the following situations: name changes, hotel changes, and destination changes. These additional fees will appear on your final price after the change has been made.

Cancellation Fees:

Once your deposit is received, all cancellations must be written and sent to our office via email. There is a cancellation fee that will be assessed to your account based on time of cancellation. If your package is paid in full and includes the Comprehensive Travel Insurance, you may be entitled to a refund through the insurance company. Please contact our Customer Service department at [email protected] with any cancellation requests or questions.

Resort Fees:

Resort fees are a daily “mandatory” additional charge that the hotel property charges outside of the initial booking cost. These fees are under the discretion of the hotel and will need to be paid by the traveler, not All Roads Travel.

No, you do not have to be in college to book with JusCollege for any of our destination events! Most of our packages are open to the general public, the only requirement is that all of our travelers must be 18+.

The only restrictions we have are the ones enforced by our hotel and club partners. Some hotels have 18+ check-in requirements and some have 21+. For example: Las Vegas has mostly a 21+ minimum age check-in requirement, while Cabo and Puerto Vallarta has a 18+ minimum check-in requirement. This also varies by property as well.

Planning your 2024 spring break? Check out this post for 20 of the best spring break destinations in the USA for college students!

As a college student, I always took advantage of my school breaks to travel.

When you’re in the working world, it’s not often that you get a full week (or more) off to travel. It’s even rarer to have days off at the same time as your friends or travel mates.

One of my favorite times to travel was spring break.

My friends and I traveled somewhere for spring break during all four years of undergrad – sometimes we went on big trips (like to Amsterdam ); other times, we kept it super budget friendly and road-tripped to somewhere here in the States.

Since spring break will be here before you know it, it’s time to start planning your spring break adventures!

There are so many awesome spring break destinations in the USA for college students. From beach party destinations to PCB to city breaks like New York City or San Diego – no matter what vacation vibe you’re going for, you can find it in one of these awesome destinations.

Pro tip: don’t forget to pack your student ID or your ISIC card – many spring break hot spots have attractions, restaurants, and more that offer student discounts!

If you’re looking for a spring break destination that has exciting nightlife, rich history, delicious food, and is close to a beach, look no further than Savannah, Georgia – this city truly has it all.

Savannah’s Historic District is home to cobblestone streets, mansions, draping Spanish moss, and more than 20 unique historic squares.

Wandering around the Historic District is completely free and is a must-do when visiting Savannah.

The best part? If you’re 21 or older, you can roam with a drink in hand!

Get a refreshing frozen daiquiri from Wet Willie’s before exploring the Historic District, stopping for breaks at the historic squares and eventually making your way to Forsyth Park, a spot perfect for people-watching.

You can also get a ticket for the hop-on hop-off trolley that will take you around to all the main sights in the Historic District.

Did you know that Savannah is believed to be one of the most haunted cities in the United States? Don’t leave the city without taking one of the famous ghost tours.

You can find everything from haunted walking tours to hearse tours; there’s even a haunted Savannah pub crawl !

👻 I recommend this Savannah Ghost Tour

If you want a beach day on your spring break trip, you’re in luck – Savannah is less than 30 minutes away from Tybee Island, a beach destination that’s popular with both locals and tourists.

If you want to go to Tybee Island but don’t have a car, you can even book a Tybee Island day trip from Savannah that includes round-trip transportation!

Savannah is within driving distance from many places in the Eastern USA, and the Savannah-Hilton Head Airport is served by budget airlines like Allegiant which are perfect for traveling on a college student budget.

Hotels in the city’s outskirts are cheaper than those downtown, but you’ll quickly spend what you’d save on hotel costs in Uber or Lyft charges.

The Thunderbird Inn or the Hotel Indigo are both affordable choices that are conveniently located in the Historic District.

2. spring break in new orleans, louisiana.

Recommended by Devin from Deventuretime

The iconic St. Louis Cathedral stands majestically against a backdrop of partly cloudy skies in Jackson Square, New Orleans, flanked by horse-drawn carriages awaiting riders, a vibrant destination for college spring breakers seeking culture and history.

New Orleans is a perfect spring break destination for college students looking for a great party scene, food, and history.

The famous Bourbon Street is located in the French Quarter and is one of the best places to party in the United States. It is a street lined with different bars selling oversized fishbowls and giant beers that you can enjoy while walking down the street.

Mardi Gras is held in this area early in the year, but you’ll see the iconic colorful beads being worn all year round.

Many visitors day drink on Bourbon Street, head back to their hotels to relax, then come back in the evening when the street is lit up and the bars are lively as ever.

Aside from partying, there are plenty of other amazing things to do in New Orleans .

Jackson Square is home to the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral and is filled with locals selling art and playing music. It is a great spot to relax and immerse yourself in the culture of the city!

3. Boston, Massachusetts

Recommended by Nicole Hunter from Go Far Grow Close

The historic Paul Revere statue takes center stage at the Boston Public Garden in Massachusetts, with lush spring blooms and manicured hedges against the Boston cityscape.

Boston is a fantastic destination for your next college spring break.

One of the top activities to do in Boston is a food tour, like the Boston Secret Food Tour .

On this tour, you explore significant parts of Boston all while eating delicious food continuously.

If you take the tour mid-afternoon, you could even skip lunch before and dinner afterward.

Of course, you also can’t miss the Freedom Trail , where you’ll be able to learn more about Boston’s history while visiting some of the city’s most important sights.

As for one of the best night time activities that you could do, consider the Imp r ov Asylum in Little Italy. It is improv at its best!

With multiple showtimes, you should be able to find one that fits within your schedule and budget.

As luck would have it, the Improv Asylum is right next door to one of Boston’s iconic landmarks – Mike’s Pastry . Here you can try one of the best cannolis in the city. Bring cash and prepare to wait a bit in line.

Boston is fundamentally a walking city – all of the cool historical sites, restaurants, and shopping areas are close to each other and one of the best ways to enjoy them is to walk from place to place.

However, if you prefer a rest, Boston has an excellent mass transit system, both for the city itself and the suburbs.

This means that not only can you easily access sites within Boston, but if you need cheaper accommodation, you can stay in the suburbs, and take one of the trains into Boston. The trains run frequently and are inexpensive.

An excellent choice for inexpensive accommodation on one of the train lines is The Lodge at Brandeis University .

You can also find affordable places to stay in the city center or the suburbs on VRBO .

If you’d rather stay closer to all of the action, the Moxy Boston Downtown is a fun hotel perfectly located a couple blocks away from Boston Common.

Avoid taking a taxi or an Uber around Boston. Most of the city streets run one way and through an indirect highway system that yields very expensive rides for what looks like short distances.

4. San Juan, Puerto Rico – An Exotic Spring Break Destination

Recommended by Julia Williams from The Cure for Curiosity

A vibrant view of Old San Juan's striking yellow colonial architecture, with a historical fort's sentry box in the foreground, captures the tropical allure of Puerto Rico, a favored spring break escape for college students seeking a mix of culture and relaxation.

Looking for that perfect exotic spring break destination without needing a passport? San Juan, Puerto Rico is it!

Just a short flight from the east coast, San Juan greets you with strong sun, reggaetón music, and delicious local foods, like Mofongo – all things that signify island life.

You’ll find the currency is still the US dollar as Puerto Rico is a US territory, but it is more budget friendly than the US mainland, adding to the appeal.

No matter what your budget is, there are a plethora of activities in San Juan .

You can easily fill your days with free activities, like soaking up the sun on the many beaches, exploring the streets of colorful Old San Juan, practicing your Spanish with locals in the eclectic shops, or hiking through El Yunque National Forest in search of waterfalls.

Or, spend a bit more to tour the Bacardi Rum Factory or snorkel some of the clearest waters in the Caribbean .

Come nightfall, head to Plaza del Mercado de Santurce , better known as La Placita, to dance the night away at the local clubs and bars.

You’ll find many of the venues in this area spill out into the streets creating more of a block party feel, and as a bonus, the drinking age in Puerto Rico is just 18 – no college student left behind!

If you’re looking for something different to do at night, take a tour to La Parguera to experience Bioluminescent Bay .

Not only will you have the time of your life in San Juan, but you’ll also find Old San Juan to be particularly picturesque and Instagrammable.

You and your sun-kissed skin will be the envy of all of your friends.

5. San Diego, California

Recommended by Kay from The Awkward Traveller

As the sun sets, casting a radiant orange glow over San Diego, the enchanting Balboa Park comes alive with twinkling lights reflecting off the central fountain.

While no major city in California is REALLY that cheap when it comes to student travel, San Diego has the perfect balance that can make even the most stringent of budgets last for an amazing weekend in San Diego !

First, if you are into the outdoors, San Diego has a variety of opportunities to get into nature, from the Instagram famous Potato Chip Rock to hiking to Sunset Cliffs Natural Park for the best sunset spot in the city. All of them free of charge.

To stay closer to the action of the city, but still not pull out your wallet, you can spend all day soaking up history and culture at Old Town San Diego and Balboa Park.

You can even taste some of San Diego’s best restaurants at an affordable price, so be sure to check out Rustic Root , Galaxy Taco , and Felix’s BBQ with S oul .

A girl standing on Potato Chip Rock in San Diego California

When you’re ready to party, Omnia is the best nightclub if you want a more wild experience, or stop by the wine bar Vin De Syrah to relax over spirits.

Since Tijuana is also right next door, it makes for a great day trip with food and activities at a fraction of the cost.

If possible, renting a car would definitely cost less than grabbing an Uber or taxi everywhere, and it will also give you the freedom to stay a little further from downtown to keep lodging prices lower.

Less than two hours by car from Los Angeles, Palm Springs is a popular desert getaway for many Californians – especially college students.

And, Spring Break is the ideal time for the college crowd to drive in.

Picture fancy cocktails, pool floats, and blaring music in front of the stunning desert backdrop.

7. Zion National Park, Utah for Spring Break

Recommended by McKenna Hurd from One More Step Travels

Majestic red sandstone cliffs under a partly cloudy sky at Zion National Park, Utah, showcasing the natural beauty and rugged landscape ideal for adventurous college spring break explorations.

Southern Utah is a popular spring break destination, when the weather is warm and sunny and the desert has splotches of green mixed in with the red rock.

Rent a car and hit the road for an adventure best experienced in your twenties!

One of the highlights of a Southern Utah road trip is Zion National Park , known for its iconic trails, such as Angel’s Landing, The Narrows, and The Subway.

Each of these hiking adventures are challenging and require a lot of grit to complete – perfect for outdoorsy college students.

Each trail offers something different: Angel’s Landing provides the thrill of hiking along a cliff with incredible views of Zion, The Narrows trail leads through the Virgin River in a slot canyon, and The Subway is an advanced rappelling and rock-climbing adventure that requires a permit.

With the latter two hikes, be aware of flash floods, especially during the springtime, and heed warning signs when there is a threat posted.

Nearby Springdale is the gateway town to Zion National Park and a great place to grab a drink and bite to eat.

Popular places include Zion Canyon Brew Pub for the brews, Whiptail Grill for Mexican food, and Bumbleberry Inn for delicious bumbleberry bars.

Plan your trip to Zion National Park in advance and reserve a campsite in the park.

Watchman Campground is right up against red cliffs, iconic to Zion, and is a cheap place to kick it with a group of friends.

Bonus tip for saving money: purchase an annual America the Beautiful National Park Pass for $80, splitting the cost between the group, and visit nearby national parks with it, too.

Within a five-hour radius of Zion are Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Grand Canyon, Great Basin, and Death Valley.

8. Spring Break in New York City

Recommended by Lyndsay from The Purposely Lost

Expansive aerial view of Lower Manhattan, featuring the iconic One World Trade Center amidst the dense urban landscape, as seen from the Edge observation deck, presenting a dynamic cityscape for those seeking an urban adventure during spring break.

If you’re interested in the best spring break destinations for college students, look no further than New York City .

While the City has a reputation for being expensive, proper planning can make this trip easily affordable.

Although your lodging might be the most expensive part of your trip, New York City has a number of hostels with cheap nightly rates (like Freehand New York City ). Many of the major hotel chains also have frequent deals.

Instead of running your budget up with taxis, become a New Yorker and take the subway.

A weekly unlimited MetroCard is $34, which means you can ride the subway as often as you want, for as far a distance as you need to go, for a full seven days from its first swipe.

You can even spend a day on one of New York City’s many beaches for a swipe of your MetroCard, like the Rockaways, Brighton Beach, or Coney Island.

Also, many iconic locations are actually free activities in New York City .

Walk around iconic NYC bucket list sites like Central Park, Times Square, the 9/11 Memorial, and any neighborhood without paying a penny, and plan trips to museums, like the American Museum of Natural History , the Metropolitan Museum of Art , or the Whitney Museum among others, around their free admission hours.

If the museum you’re interested in doesn’t have free hours, check and see if they have reduced admission pricing for students.

Many of the Broadway shows have Student Rush ticket policies as well.

For the over 21 crowd, make sure you visit a rooftop bar for dinner and drinks.

230 Fifth Rooftop Bar has an amazing view of the Empire State Building , Lucy’s Cantina Royale looks out over the old and new Penn Station complexes, and The Heights Bar and Grill has good eats on the Upper West Side by Columbia University.

9. Los Angeles, California

Recommended by Francesca from Homeroom Travel

Scenic view of the Hollywood Sign perched on the hills of Los Angeles, California, with palm trees in the foreground framing the urban sprawl.

Los Angeles is one of the best spring break destinations for college students.

There are so many fun and unique things to do in Los Angeles that everyone can find something they love. Best of all, there are a ton of free and cheap things to do in Los Angeles as well.

Hikers will find a ton of awesome hikes around Los Angeles. The Hollywood Sign, Runyon Canyon, and Griffith Park are three of the most popular hiking locations.

10. Bozeman, Montana – A Unique Spring Break Destination

Recommended by Ryan from Passions and Places

Skiers preparing to descend a snowy slope at Bridger Bowl, with panoramic views of forested mountains under a cloudy sky near Bozeman, Montana, offering a serene and thrilling spring break experience for college students.

Everyone hits the beach for spring break, so ditch the crowds and head to the mountains of Bozeman, Montana, for a unique – and budget-friendly – ski trip vacation instead.

Two of the best ski hills in Montana are within easy driving distance, with Bridger Bowl (the local favorite) only twenty minutes from downtown and the nationally-renowned Big Sky just over an hour away.

Save money on car rentals and gas (and travel more sustainably!) by using public transportation to get there.

Bus rides to Big Sky are only $10, and Bridger trips are free on the weekends. The Streamline Bus system in Bozeman is also free and will take you all over town.

For more fun in the snow, try cross-country skiing on the groomed trails of Crosscut Mountain Sports Center , just down the road from Bridger.

You can also rent gear from the Round House in Bozeman to ski or snowshoe on any of the dozens of trails just outside of town.

To ease sore muscles after a long day in the mountains, take a class at one of the many yoga studios downtown or go for a soak at Bozeman Hot Springs .

Hotels in Bozeman aren’t exactly cheap, so your best bet is Treasure State Hostel , one of Montana’s few hostels.

The Bozeman restaurant scene is spectacular for a town of only 50,000, with all types of cuisines available.

To save money, grab a delicious bagel from Bagelworks or a freshly baked donut from Granny’s Donuts .

For value at lunch, you can’t beat the massive sub sandwiches at Pickle Barre l or heaping bowls of mac and cheese from the Naked Noodle .

Montana has the second-highest number of breweries per capita of any state, and Bozeman is at the center of the craft brewing scene, with ten of them inside the city limits.

Most breweries have to close by 8:00pm, though (state law), so after a few beers, head downtown to the Rockin’ R Bar or Bar IX . Or for a real Montana dive bar experience, check out open mic night at the Haufbrau .

11. Key West, Florida

Recommended by Megan Starr from Megan & Aram Travel Blog

Quaint and colorful boutique shops line a peaceful street in Key West, Florida, nestled among lush palm trees, offering a vibrant shopping experience in one of the best spring break destinations for college students.

One of the coolest places to go on Spring Break in the United States is Key West, Florida.

While many college students will opt for the easily accessible Miami and Ft. Lauderdale Beaches (or even up the coast to Daytona Beach), Key West kind of offers a different vibe that puts a Caribbean spin on things, making you feel as though you’ve almost left the US for a vacation.

Getting from Miami to Key West is easy if you rent a car and take things slowly.

There are many stops on your road trip from Miami to Key West worth seeing, such as Islamorada (delicious food and craft beer!), Bahia Honda State Park, and the backwaters of Key Largo.

If you’re on a budget, choose to stay on an island other than Key West, where prices are far steeper.

Marathon is cheaper and less than an hour away from Key West. There are also some affordable snorkeling opportunities in Marathon.

Once you’re in Key West, you can find a plethora of fun things to do from taking sunset cruises to partying at historic bars like Sloppy Joe’s on Duval Street.

Anything goes in Key West and travelers are open-minded and just ready for a good time.

If you want to save up for one exciting day trip, you can take a trip to Dry Tortugas National Park and admire the beautiful blue waters and Fort Jefferson.

Key West may not be one of the top spots for a spring break vacation in the US, but it is a wonderful alternative to some of the traditional locations on mainland Florida.

13. Orlando, Florida

Recommended by Derek and Mike from Robe Trotting

The Orlando Eye, a towering 400-foot Ferris wheel, stands as a central feature against a dynamic backdrop of tropical palms and interactive water fountains, highlighting a fun and iconic attraction in Orlando, Florida, a favorite among college students for spring break.

Spring is one of the best times to visit Orlando and avoid the oppressive heat, humidity, and crowds of summer.

This makes the Florida city an ideal spring break destination for those looking for a fun, warm-weather getaway. Here are some tips to help with your Orlando Florida trip planning .

The most well-known things to do in Orlando include the theme parks.

Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Florida need no explanation, but if you decide to visit any of the parks in Orlando it will take a large chunk from your budget.

There are very rarely discounts, so be wary of any “online deals” you find – discount tickets are sometimes scams.

If the theme parks aren’t in your budget, try visiting ICON Park .

It’s not Space Mountain, but you can ride the Orlando Wheel, a much more affordable ferris wheel. The ride is about 20 minutes around and along the way you can snap some gorgeous photos of the city.

Spend your evenings checking out Downtown Orlando, walking around Lake Eola and you can even take a paddle swan boat for a spin.

Afterwards you can grab a bite to eat on Church Street, the popular downtown nightlife spot. It’s got great pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants of various price ranges.

Try Hamburger Mary’s for a fun vibe and simple American burgers at an iconic bar and grille.

In the morning, grab brunch at the Stubborn Mule , it’s got an eclectic atmosphere and delicious steak and eggs with a full cocktail menu at affordable prices.

14. Spring Break in Austin, Texas

The Texas State Capitol building in Austin, Texas, stands grandly under a clear blue sky, its dome a focal point amidst the lush greenery of the surrounding trees.

Austin, Texas is home to some of the best music, art, and food scenes in the US, so it’s easy to see why it’s become a popular spring break destination for college students.

For day drinking, booking a bike bar tour with Pubcrawler of Austin is a must.

15. Bald Head Island, North Carolina Spring Break

Recommended by Maria from Maptrekking

Panoramic view from Old Baldy Lighthouse overlooking the serene Bald Head Island, with its coastal homes and marina set against the backdrop of the expansive Atlantic Ocean and lush marshlands, a tranquil retreat for spring breakers seeking a peaceful escape.

As a barrier island on the coast of North Carolina, Bald Head Island (BHI) is perfect for slow traveling to experience nature and relax from the stressful college atmosphere.

Though the island was the filming location for Weekend at Bernie’s, it isn’t necessarily filled with bustling nightlife and the party scene.

Bald Head Island is better suited for spring breakers looking for a destination full of history, nature, and beautiful beaches.

Check out ‘Old Baldy’ , the oldest lighthouse still standing in North Carolina. Make sure to climb to the top for an excellent view of the whole island.

Also, as a barrier island, there are a few different ecological habitats to discover: beach and dunes, a maritime forest, freshwater lagoons, and salt marsh/estuary.

For some fun activities, try kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding in the salt marsh or beach-combing for rare shells.

Over 260 species of birds have been found on the island which makes the island perfect for bird watching in any season.

BHI is also known for its sea turtle activity. Spring will be too early for sea turtle nesting or hatching but stop by the BHI Conservancy to learn more about sea turtle conservation.

The island is quirky, to say the least! Residents use electric golf carts as transport, so the only cars on the island are usually service vehicles.

Most don’t realize because Bald Head is so far north, but there are alligators on the island! They stay in or near the lagoons but can venture onto the beach, salt marsh, and even backyards.

Visiting on spring break will show you a whole different side to the island since the high season in the summer. You will be able to experience peaceful solitude and explore freely!

Crystal-clear blue waters of Lake Tahoe glimpsed between lush evergreen pines and rugged granite boulders, with distant mountain peaks creating a stunning natural vista, an idyllic setting for college students to unwind during spring break.

At an elevation of 6225 feet, Lake Tahoe is one of the best spring break destinations in the USA for college students.

This Alpine lake shares the border with California and Nevada and is surrounded by green pine forests and majestic beaches. It’s the perfect place for a stop on an Arizona to California road trip .

You can visit Lake Tahoe at any time of the year. However, college students like to visit this beautiful lake during spring break when the water of the lake is crystal clear and the hotels offer great discounts for students.

Lake Tahoe in spring is incredible, not only for its charming weather but also for the countless fun and adventurous activities along with picturesque ski resorts.

There are several pristine beaches where you can swim in the turquoise water or just enjoy sunbathing with your friends.

There are lots of adventure activities around Lake Tahoe for spring breakers. You can enjoy kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, or jet skiing.

Kirkwood and Heavenly are some fantastic ski resorts where you can enjoy skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, and snowboarding even during the spring months.

If you are a nature lover, there are tons of hiking opportunities for spring breakers. You can also rent bikes and explore the around Lake Tahoe .

Although most of the casinos are on the Nevada side, you can find some in North Lake Tahoe also. Nightlife in the northern part is more vibrant than South Lake Tahoe.

Make sure to try the tasty Mexican dishes from La Mexicana in North Lake Tahoe. All the items are very delicious and reasonably priced.

For affordable accommodation on a college student budget, I highly recommend staying at Mellow Mountain Hostel located in South Lake Tahoe. This cozy hostel is the perfect place to meet other spring breakers!

18. Panama City Beach, Florida – Best Spring Break Destinations for College Students

Recommended by Daniel James from Layer Culture

he vibrant Panama City Beach skyline, with its row of towering beachfront high-rises glowing in the golden hour sunlight, overlooks a bustling beach scene teeming with vacationers. PCB is one of the most popular destinations in the USA for college spring breakers.

When looking for the best spring break destinations for college students, Panama City Beach (PCB) is a must!

Not to be confused with the country of Panama, this unique beach town located in the north of Florida is well-positioned on the Gulf of Mexico.

More than half a million college students visit this city each year for its wild spring break celebrations. PCB is definitely one of the most popular destinations for spring breakers.

When visiting PCB, expect warm crystal waters and some of the biggest beach parties you have ever seen.

With 27 miles of white sand to sunbathe on, there is everything from live concerts and celebrity appearances, to free giveaways; you can even take part in the action on the smallest budget.

You won’t go hungry while partying on spring break because places such as Harpoon Harry’s , located right on the beachfront, is known as the ultimate party bar and serves some of the best seafood buckets in the area.

It is wise to secure your belongings when partying here, not because of petty theft, but there can be lots of water and beer splashing around, so carry a waterproof backpack  to keep items like your phone or camera protected at all times.

All in all, the parties in PCB are wild and the area is moderately safe with the local authorities patrolling the area regularly, allowing you to party in a carefree manner.

If your spring break falls in March (as most college spring breaks do), keep in mind that alcohol is not allowed on the beach. The rest of the year, alcohol is permitted as long as it’s not in glass containers.

19. Santa Barbara, California

Recommended by Daria from The Discovery Nut

Twilight descends on Santa Barbara, California, as seen from the pier with tall swaying palm trees lining the shore, the Santa Ynez Mountains in the distance, and a peaceful beachfront.

For those who want to get a cultural and active spring break experience while enjoying the perfect weather, there is no better place than Santa Barbara in California.

Often called the American Rivera, Santa Barbara has a rich colonial heritage and many landmarks where visitors can learn about how this area was established by the Spanish colonists and later evolved into one of the most vibrant cities along Central California’s Coast.

To learn the history of the area, head to El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park , a military outpost that was built by the Spanish settlers to protect their domain.

El Presidio no longer serves as a military outpost and instead houses an open-air museum with the second oldest building in California called El Cuartel.

The city is also home to the historic Mission Santa Barbara and Casa de la Guerra , and the most beautiful courthouse in the United States.

And when it’s time to party, head to downtown Santa Barbara where you can find plenty of bars, restaurants, and clubs.

Among other fun things to do in Santa Barbara , spring breakers can also enjoy great recreational opportunities such as surfing , kayaking , and hiking.

The surrounding Santa Ynez mountains offer tons of recreational opportunities such as hiking and trail running, and the weather in March and April, when most people head for spring break destinations is absolutely perfect.

Craving the beach? Santa Barbara provides quick access to some of the most beautiful beaches in California such as East Beach or Butterfly Beach.

Santa Barbara is not a big town but it packs on plenty of adventure and history, making it one of the best spring break destinations for college students.

The island is packed with beautiful nature and history.

Make sure you visit the museums, especially the Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum , the Nantucket Whaling Museum , and the Mu seum of African American History .

College Spring Break Travel Tips & FAQ

When is spring break.

Most USA college spring breaks fall in mid-March, with some being in later March or early April. Most universities publish an academic calendar that lists important dates, like the dates of school breaks, holidays, and finals. To find out when your school’s spring break is, Google “name of your school + academic calendar” and look for the spring break dates.

What is the most popular college spring break beach?

Panama City Beach, Florida is probably one of the most popular college spring break beaches as well as one of the most popular spring break destinations overall! Each year, thousands of spring breakers flock to PCB, also known as the “spring break capital of the world.”

How long is spring break?

Typically, spring break for college students lasts for nine days total: five weekdays (Monday-Friday) and two weekends on each end. This is the perfect amount of time if you want to go on a long trip. But, if you’d rather go somewhere shorter, you can also fit in a long weekend trip somewhere in the USA .

When should I start planning my college spring break trip?

Since spring break is a popular time for travel, start planning your trip in November or December. This will give you a few months to start looking for cheap flights and hotels.

How can I find cheap spring break flights?

My favorite tool for searching for cheap flights is Google Flights . You can use the price calendar to see what dates have the cheapest flights, and you can put in multiple different departure and destination airports.

I’m also a huge fan of Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights), an email newsletter that sends out amazing flights deals to destinations around the US and the world.

They have a free membership as well as premium ones that send out more frequent deals, mistake fares, and more.

How can I rent a car for spring break?

I’ve always rented cars for spring break trips through Discover Cars , a car rental platform that searches more than 500 companies so that you can find the best price. Keep in mind that many car rentals charge extra for drivers that are younger than 25. When searching Discover Cars , make sure to enter the driver’s age to see if there will be a young driver fee added.

Spring Break: An Overview

About one week during the school year, college kids get to take a break. Every year, hundreds of thousands of American students enjoy their spring break getaway in resort towns, whiling away the time in heart-thumping beach parties and overflowing drinks. This picture does not always reflect how all spring breakers spend their much-needed reprieve from academic responsibilities.

Spring break generally means students have a week-long break that gives them many opportunities. Some get the chance to travel home to see their families. Others choose to spend it catching up on schoolwork that they did not get to complete before the break.

For many, it means traveling to various locations, allowing them to unwind from stress by going on a memorable trip. Their destinations are mostly geared toward party places or beach resorts.

When does Spring Break usually occur?

Spring break usually depends on the university or college’s academic calendar. Typically, it falls in early spring, which can occur between mid-February and mid-April. Most spring breaks are scheduled in March.

Some schools are known to hold the spring break during Easter or Passover, while others prefer to place it around the semester’s midpoint. Spring break is often the Easter holiday, Easter vacation, or Easter week. This all depends on the region one is in, however.

Why Does Having a Spring Break Matter?

Spring Break is held for a reason. It is often scheduled before the finals and the last half of the school year. Spring break serves various purposes for students, often romanticized as a week of wild parties and never-ending fun and traveling. It comes only once a year, and it is one of the most anticipated days for many.

Like everyone else, students need time away from demanding coursework. The core of spring break is the opportunity to take a breather from your studies and spend time with family and friends. While spring break often gets a bad reputation for being all about wild parties, it ushers in many benefits beyond enriching your social life, especially physical and mental health.

Taking a Break Can Make You Healthy

As a student, mental decompression is a necessity. Not only does a spring break help you achieve a better mental state, but you also get to benefit physically. It helps to get away from your daily duties to allow your mind to relax.

When your mental health is right, your body also reaps the rewards. Lower stress and anxiety allow you to focus on your daily activities and enjoy them while you are at them. This helps lift your mood, reduce stress hormones, lower your blood pressure, and sleep better.

Spring Break Can Make You Happier

Taking a short vacation can do wonders for your mental wellbeing. The excitement of a reprieve from academic duties can boost your mood and generally make you happy. You can meet friends or family back home or travel to a superb location where you can make the most out of your week-long vacation.

It Can Help You Prepare for the Challenges to Come

Since spring breaks are usually held before the finals, the much-needed holiday can help you reset and recharge for another semester of rigorous academic work. It can be used as a time off from learning where you get to avoid stress. Others use the time to catch up on schoolwork and complete pending requirements.

Safety Tips for Spring Break

  • Take precautions for COVID-19 – You should stay updated on vaccines and observe health protocols.
  • Stock on emergency supplies like a first aid kit and drinking water.
  • When driving, you need to slow down and drive defensively.
  • Make sure to leave a copy of your travel itinerary with someone back home.
  • Ensure that your baggage and belongings are tracked at all times.
  • Avoid taking large amounts of cash.
  • Be a responsible, legal-age drinker.
  • Keep track of emergency exits when you get to the venue.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did spring break start.

The concept behind spring break originates in the Ancient Greeks. The Greeks used to blow off some steam each spring with a three-day feast dedicated to Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility. The modern spring break, however, started in the late 1930s.

A swimming coach from Colgate University in New York took his team down to Florida for some early training at a new Olympic-size pool. The idea resonated with other college swim coaches, who also started to do the same. Eventually, it became an annual tradition for swimmers all over the country. By the 1960s, an influx of students prompted local businesses in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to offer attractive, affordable products.

Is it necessary to spend spring break outdoors? Why?

Spring break is an important reprieve for students to take a break from their hectic coursework before the finals. It offers health benefits, including mental decompression, improved mood, better sleep, and ample preparation for the last half of the school year.

It serves as a chance to catch up with friends and family. Many also devote their spring break to traveling, good for the mind, body, and soul.

Can students stay on campus during spring break?

Students are mostly allowed to stay on campus during spring break. You will need to complete a Spring Break Planning Form and be charged extra.

It is important to note that many services and facilities, including dining, bus transportation, and residence hall front desk hours, would be significantly reduced during spring break. It is possible that some colleges and universities do not allow students to stay on campus, so you will need to check with your school and confirm.

Key Takeaways

The most popular spring break destinations for college students are Daytona Beach, Miami Beach, Puerto Vallarta, Myrtle Beach, Las Vegas, Louisiana, and many more. There are literally hundreds of these ultimate go-to places for spring breakers, depending on your vacation goals and budget.

The usual idea that comes to mind is usually the beach, but hitting the party scene or doing an unconventional activity works for some college spring breakers, too!

Regardless of your destination, make your spring break vacation all worth it. Get the rest and relaxation you need, get excited over fun activities, spend some time with family and friends, and try new things!

When you're not lounging on Miami Beach's wide shorelines, make the most of the city's event calendar, which includes Miami Beach Pride and Ultra Music Festival (both are typically held in March or April). You won't need a passport to soak in the sunny, breezy spring weather on the island's roughly 300 paradisiacal beaches . Those looking to clear their heads after a few nights out can island-hop to some of the country's less flashy locales to swim with pigs or lounge on pink sand beaches . Having trouble finding affordable lodging and airfare? Consider a fun-filled cruise or vacation package that bundles your resort stay and flight costs.

How to Plan Spring Break on a Budget

A jar of money from a student who is saving money for Spring Break

There’s no denying that college is expensive. According to Grand Canyon University , undergraduate students can expect to spend between $30,132 and $33,662 on tuition, housing, food, and other expenses.

However, visiting the best spring break destinations for college students in 2024 doesn’t have to break the bank, even if you’re on a tight budget.

Here are some practical tips for planning cheap spring break trips for college students:

  • Get organized early –  Accommodation, transport, and other costs often get much more expensive closer to the date, especially around peak periods such as Spring Break. So booking a few months in advance can save you some serious cash.
  • Avoid the predictable destinations – Although you can plan an affordable trip to Florida or Mexico, many of the best deals are in less-known places. For a fabulous Spring Break on a budget, consider heading off the beaten path to somewhere like Moab, South Padre Island, or Central America.
  • Look for bulk discounts   –  Group trips can be much more affordable than traveling alone or as a couple. Grab some buddies and look around for accommodation deals for large groups and group discounts on activities.
  • Pack smart – Buying extra supplies like sunscreen, shampoo, or flip-flops after you arrive can become costly. So make sure you pack all the essentials to avoid unnecessary expenses. Also, avoid overpacking to ensure you don’t get hit with excess baggage fees.
  • Ask about student benefits – You’ll be surprised to learn how many companies and organizations, such as airlines, hotels, and museums, offer student discounts. Before paying, always check if there’s a discount available — it never hurts to ask!
  • Tap into credit card rewards – Many credit cards offer travel rewards, so be sure to check if your card allows you to earn points or miles and how you can use them for Spring Break.
  • Plan a budget – Make sure you don’t overspend by planning a strict budget for your trip, including how much you can afford to spend on meals, drinks, and activities. You can ensure you stick to your budget by bringing a prepaid debit card.

SPEND SPRING BREAK ON A PRIVATE ISLAND WITH YOUR FRIENDS

Published on February 8, 2020

Royal Caribbean's Instagram for Live Updates

If you’re a college student, you know spring break is the first big hurrah before your long-awaited summer vacation — and the first opportunity of the year to set out on an unforgettable weeklong vacation. In many places, temperatures are finally warm enough to ditch long sleeves and pants, and opt for t-shirts and shorts instead. And vacation destinations around the world are gearing up to welcome seasonal travelers with all kinds of amazing experiences. Hotspots like Cabo in Mexico and Miami in South Florida frequently top lists for the most popular spring break destinations, but if you’re looking for an all-out private island experience unlike any other, it doesn’t get better than a spring break cruise to Perfect Day at CocoCay with Royal Caribbean. Take it from a vacation expert — nothing beats a visit to this thrill-filled island paradise. Here’s why.

IT’S TOTALLY EXCLUSIVE TO ROYAL CARIBBEAN GUESTS

Perfect Day Island CocoCay Bahamas Floating Bar

Perfect Day at CocoCay is a private island owned by Royal Caribbean, which means that the only way to get there is on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Forget super-packed beaches and long lines at bars and restaurants, which is what you’ll find at most other vacation destinations during spring break. Because Perfect Day at CocoCay is exclusive to Royal Caribbean guests, overcrowding is never a problem. In fact, the island offers lots of free loungers and umbrellas at all of its beaches and inland attractions, so you won’t have to waste time searching for an available spot. There are plenty of bars scattered throughout the island as well, including the Floating Bar, which you can easily wade to from the shore, and a swim-up bar that’s always buzzing inside a massive freshwater lagoon — more on that later.

YOU CAN GET YOUR FILL OF BUCKET LIST THRILLS

Perfect Day Coco Cay Daredevil Peak Landing Splashing

There aren’t many island destinations out there that also have a full-fledged waterpark with record-breaking slides — but Perfect Day at CocoCay does, and it’s one of the things that make it an epic spring break vacation spot. The private island is home to Thrill Waterpark , which encompasses thirteen crazy-fun waterslides, an obstacle course, and the largest wave pool in the Caribbean. If you’re really brave, you can take on Daredevil’s Peak. Standing 135 feet high, it’s the tallest waterslide in North America. If you’re not into heights and speed is more your cup of tea, try one of the many racer slides, like Splash Speedway, which has four lanes so you can challenge your besties. Or the Manta Raycers, twin open-flume slides that let two friends go head-to-head on a mad dash to the finish line. If you’re visiting Perfect Day at CocoCay with a group of thrill-seekers, you might want to consider booking a private cabana at Thrill Waterpark. Not only does a cabana reservation here cover park admission for up to eight guests — it also comes with dedicated attendant service so that you never have to leave the action.

Epic slides and rides at Thrill Waterpark aren’t the only attractions you’ll find at this private island escape. You can check a helium balloon ride off your bucket list here, too. Up, Up and Away gently lifts guests up to 450 feet into the sky, yielding awe-inspiring views of the island and the turquoise waters that surround it. And there’s also a 1,600-foot-long zip line ride that carries you right over the harbor fountain. The best part? You can experience all the thrills for yourself in just one day, because the attractions are so close to each other (this is an exclusive private island destination, remember?).

IT’S HOME TO THE CARIBBEAN’S COOLEST PARTY SPOT

Perfect Day Coco Cay Oasis Lagoon Family Swimming

Another reason why spring break cruises to Perfect Day at CocoCay make for unforgettable experiences is because the party scene you’ll find onshore is second to none. If you’re looking for a party, Oasis Lagoon is the place to be. The largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, it’s another one of Perfect Day at CocoCay’s record-setting attractions — and the ultimate turn-up spot. It’s not unusual for conga lines to form spontaneously here and snake their way around the massive lagoon’s swim-up islands and coves. A team of talented bartenders keep the piña coladas, Bahama Mamas and Coco Locos coming strong at the swim-up bar, and a DJ makes sure the soundtrack is loaded with all your favorite jams — in fact, take a dip beneath the surface of the pool and you’ll find there’s even a secret mix of tunes pulsing through the underwater speakers. When you need a break from all the excitement, you can float on over to any of the lagoon’s three swim-up islands and coves. Each has its own unique vibe and in-water loungers where you can kick back and bask in the sunshine, Coco Loco in hand.

YOU CAN CHILL IF YOU WANT TO

Perfect Day Coco Cay Chill Island Beach Couple Enjoying the Beach Cabana

Not everybody wants to spend their spring break partying and living it up. For some, the ultimate spring break vacation is more about disconnecting and recharging — and that’s perfectly fine, too. Perfect Day at CocoCay is all about variety, which is why Royal Caribbean made sure to include plenty of options when reimagining their exclusive island destination. If all you want to do during your spring break is unwind and turn up the tropical vibes, head to Chill Island . True to its name, this gorgeous and serene stretch of white sandy beach is the ultimate chill zone, complete with hammocks, plenty of comfy lounge chairs and daybeds, and even private cabanas you can rent for you and your squad. Steps away, Chill Grill serves up all your favorite beach day foods, like juicy burgers, crisp fresh salads, amazing BBQ, and decadent desserts. There’s even a snorkel shack where you can rent equipment to explore the coral clusters that dot the surrounding waters. If you’re craving a drink, wade out to the famous floating bar, bobbing gently on calm turquoise waves just a short distance away from the shoreline.

YOU CAN ALSO GET IN THE GAME

Perfect Day Coco Cay South Beach Volleyball Friends

If you’re more about water sports and activities, South Beach is your go-to. While it’s just as beautiful as its neighbor, Chill Island, this beach is all about staying active. Challenge your squad to a game of volleyball or beachside basketball. Like everywhere else on the island, you’ll find tons of complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas, plus daybeds and cabanas you can reserve for a little more privacy. And a nearby Snack Shack makes it easy and convenient to fuel up on great bites in between activities. What’s more, South Beach is home to three different bars — the eponymous South Beach Bar, the Sandtrap Bar and the floating bar, so your favorite beers and tropical drinks are never far.

There you have it — the ultimate spring break getaway that offers something for every kind of guest. Whether you come for the beautiful beaches and island vibes, the adrenaline-amping rides, or the bass-pumping revelry, Perfect Day at CocoCay should be number one on your list of epic spring break vacation option. Your ticket to paradise is a spring break cruise with Royal Caribbean, which offers just as many thrills and game changing ways to chill as the island itself — but that’s a whole other story.

The history of Orange Crush: A spring break to remember

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — It’s seen as a safety concern today by Tybee Island authorities, but how did Orange Crush start?

Born in Savannah, Nadra Enzi remembers few trips to the beach, feeling unwelcome for being Black.

“Those of us born or raised in Savannah pretty much considered Tybee Island to be a klan meeting with a great backdrop,” said Enzi.

Tybee Island has had a connected history with Black Americans for centuries, from the Lazaretto slave quarantine station in the 1770s, the civil rights movement wade-ins in the 60s and Orange Crush.

Originally from New York, the creator of Orange Crush, Kenneth Flowe , also remembers his cousins saying there was no beach in Savannah.

“They were doing that because they didn’t want us to go out to Tybee Island and experience that look of disapproval that white folks would give you if you came to the beach,” said Flowe.

Although integrated in 1963 , Tybee was out of the question for many Savannah State University (SSU) students.

Many would travel to Daytona Beach in Florida where a Black college reunion took place every year.

Enjoying their time in Daytona and seeing the importance of having a beach event for HBCU students, Flowe asked himself, “Why not have this at Tybee?”

Orange Crush ’89

“Orange Crush was essentially a Pan African event that, again, it had that element to it with regard to consciousness and unity,” said Jamal Toure, who was on the SSU student government.

At the time in the late 80s, SSU had no official school president and was in the works to merge with Armstrong State College by the Board of Regents.

“We have more of a concern about Savannah State, that it would wipe out the history and story of Savannah State,” said Toure.

The student president at the time, Dr. Ifekan-Shango Simon, says that the SSU student government was actively fighting the merger when they got a pitch from the vice president at the time, Flowe, to have a celebration event.

“When he started talking about the idea, I said, brother, you do understand that there haven’t been large numbers of Black people on Tybee Island since the day people waded to integrate it and got arrested?” said Enzi.

Simon saw this as a way to bring positive attention to the school to help in their current struggles and advertise the university.

“We basically had to put on a weekend of activities that shed a positive light on Savannah State,” said Simon.

“When Flowe came up with the idea, both him and I had to sell the idea to faculty.”

Including the SSU’s stand-out color orange and the name of a popular soda at the time, they came up with “Orange Crush.”

They came up with a dual event on the SSU campus and Tybee Beach with a series of events for the weekend, including block parties, concerts, talent shows, contests, national speakers and more.

Flowe also got permits for the events on Tybee, a team of students to clean after the event and got faculty to sign off to be chaperones.

Getting students from other HBCUs to join in on the celebration, the stage was set for April 21, 1989.

“No matter how we try to play the game, there is racism,” said Jamal Toure.

Although with a permit, the city called out multiple law enforcement agencies to oversee the event, including Chatham County Police, Savannah Police, Tybee Police, Savannah State Police, Fort Pulaski Police, Georgia State Troopers, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Coast Guard.

“And at that point, I thought to myself, we are the safest African Americans on the eastern seaboard,” said Flowe.

With over 500 crushers , they were watched and monitored by the police and other beachgoers. While unsettling, Flowe looked to change the perspective.

He says they knew they had an agenda and that they would behave themselves to not draw police activity.

“So the only thing those cops really could do on that day is protect us if we were attacked,” said Flowe.

Not letting the stares and the overwhelming police presence stop them, they continued with their party and fellowship for the weekend, having daytime events on Tybee and nighttime on campus.

The first Orange Crush event was a success, with no incidents or arrests taking place.

“That’s the year the student government who originated it controlled it. Totally controlled it, meaning we said who was in and who was out,” said Simon.

In the months following the event, SSU saw an increase in enrollment , the cancellation of the merger and a new university president .

Orange Cush had accomplished its goal.

Despite the positive outcomes Orange Crush, the founders graduated and oversight dropped when SSU stopped sponsoring the event in 1991 following arrests and a drowning.

While the university events stopped, the beach party lived on.

Orange Crush 1991 to now

With the university no longer involved with Orange Crush, promoters began to take advantage of the lack of leadership.

“And then, you know, promoters, their objective is not necessarily a spring break for African American students takes to make money. So it just got a little chaotic,” said Flowe.

Since its inception, there have been shootings, robberies, car crashes and arrests reported on the spring break bash, but Toure notes that Orange Crush isn’t the only event with bad actors.

“When these other universities and colleges were having activities on the beach at Tybee, you had underage drinking that was going on, But do we discuss that? Do we have any conversation about that?” said Toure.

He says there is a double standard placed on events of mainly Black people where a gathering is immediately looked at as more dangerous and violent than other gatherings.

Today, Tybee Island has put measures in place to control the influx of visitors, including traffic controls and a safety checkpoint.

Some say it’s to discourage crushers from coming.

Watching the event for years over social media, Flowe says he has seen the same attitude from the city of Tybee towards the event.

“All they were trying to do was wish it away, or simply close their eyes and say, I hope they don’t come back,” said Flowe.

“But rather than embracing it and saying, OK, what’s the best way to make sure that these kids can come use this public beach and then leave without costing the city so much?”

He goes on to explain that the city’s involvement in facilitating a safer experience for crushers can be the solution for everyone involved.

“If you think about St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah, at one point, I’m sure it was a nuisance, but the city of Savannah has embraced it and figured out how to make it work for everyone,” said Flowe.

He suggests having a shuttle system where crushers can get on and off Tybee safely.

Having this, he says, would minimize trash and items individuals can take on a bus and get people on and off the island at set times.

Flowe says Savannah should encourage promoters to throw events in the evening to make students eager to get off of the island.

Simon suggests SSU to sponsor the event again and include more events for crushers and the community, like art festivals, concerts, culture markets and more.

Advice for crushers

“People’s right to access public space and public waterways should not be abridged,” said Flowe.

“I think that if people start saying, ‘Well, I’m not gonna go to Orange Crush because I don’t feel want it.’ They’re moving in the wrong direction. You know, you’re letting the bully win.”

Simon says that Orange Crush is a time to have fun and that it can also be an opportunity to network and make connections , but to remember:

“Conduct is always important. I don’t tell people how to conduct themselves, but whatever conduct you think you would like to see, that’s how you should conduct yourself.”

Toure says racism still exists, and it’s important to stay aware and safe.

“Understand that if you gotta spend your money, spend your money with people who like you. Don’t spend your money with people who don’t like you,” said Toure.

Enzi says that this is a time to recognize and address the unspoken barriers faced by the Black community.

“You need to make sure that you do not give those who truly do not want you there any excuse to curtail your freedom to check out your record and to come up with new reasons not to have a Black college gathering. Be intelligent with it,” said Enzi.

While everyone has a different view of Orange Crush, this event is a part of the history of the Black and HBCU community in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.

In the first of what is hoped to be regular trips to the country, a group of 10 Iowa State University students got to experience agriculture in Nepal and how it is being impacted by climate change.

Led by Assistant Teaching Professor Ramesh Balayar and Professor David Peters, both rural sociologists in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, the  Exploring Ecosystem Services and Subsistence Farming Activities in Rural Nepal study abroad trip took place over spring break last month. The experience was unique because no other study abroad programs are offered at Iowa State that take students to Nepal. And as a native of the country and someone who had worked there with international development organizations for over a decade, Balayar was able to provide his expertise and insights.

Large group of people oriented in a circle and dancing outside a housing unit.

“I thought it would be great for a leading agricultural institution to expose students to issues facing the indigenous smallholder farmers, especially women in Nepal,” Balayar said.

The students and instructors visited two groups of farmers – one in the southern part of the country and one in the northern part – and saw first-hand how farming practices differ from those in the United States.

Colby Brandt, sophomore in agricultural and rural policy studies, marveled at the terrace systems used and how the ecosystems varied from one part of the country to another.

“They were just as surprised to see pictures of my family’s Minnesota farm as I was to see their farms,” Brandt said.

Morgan Lang, junior in global resource systems, said it was humbling to see the amount of manual labor used by the Nepali farmers.

Farms are much smaller in Nepal than in the United States, with some no bigger than the average house yard. In talking to the farmers, the students learned how prolonged drought or unexpected flooding linked to climate change can negatively impact farmers’ yields come harvest time.

“They depend so much more on having a successful crop to provide food and income for their families because they do not have crop insurance like we do in the United States,” Lang said.

“It really makes climate change real for students – and humanizes it – when they see the impact it has on people in less developed countries,” Peters said.

One of the topics the group talked about on the trip was the efforts people and organizations make to help the Nepali people. Often, groups will come in for a short period, provide tools to make immediate changes to the way Nepalis people go about various tasks, then leave and never return to do any follow-up.

“We need to look at it from a socio-cultural lens and determine how best to implement changes,” said Shradha Silori, junior in global resource systems and environmental science. “We need to consider if that is what the people in Nepal want, or is it what we think they want?”

Despite all the challenges people in Nepal face, the students agreed that everyone in the country was very friendly and always had a smile to share.

“They have so much hope despite the issues they face,” Brandt said. “It really changed my perspective and has made me do a lot of internal reflection and realize I shouldn’t let the little things get me down.”

As the students heard Balayar say multiple times throughout the trip, “Life is beautiful.”

“By the end of the trip, all of the students were saying that phrase, too,” Silori recalled with a smile.

Plans are already in place to offer the study abroad experience next year during spring break. Balayar and Peters also hope to add a summer-long experience in Nepal. The two recently submitted a U.S. State Department grant to fund these new projects.

“Having these kinds of people-to-people relationships really advances public relationships between Nepal and Iowa State,” Peters said.

Students get a ‘Jumpstart’ on their careers in Dallas

Uc blue ash students experience transformative travel on their path to lindner.

Students from Carl H. Lindner College of Business’ Jumpstart program — a pipeline between UC Blue Ash and the business college that provides students with additional support toward transitioning into a bachelor’s degree program — experienced a whirlwind visit to Dallas during spring break 2024.

The group of 12 students balanced a packed schedule of professional development and networking with cultural and tourist experiences. Sponsored by Deloitte, students connected with Lindner alumni and employer partners throughout the four-day trip.

Arun Murthy, BBA '95, (center) offered students advice on actions they can take now that will create positive impact for their futures.

Day one: Diving right in

Day one brought a visit to the Charles Schwab corporate campus where students met with Lindner alumnus  Arun Murthy , BBA ’95.

After a tour of the campus, students engaged in a Q&A session with Murthy to gain his insights on what they should be doing right now to prepare them for the next phase of their educational and career journeys.

Murthy encouraged the young professionals to “keep your eyes open” and pay attention to what piques their interest. But Murthy’s greatest advice to students was to get involved and be open to meeting and getting to know new people.

After finishing their day with a visit to the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum for reflection and remembrance, and an evening in the Discovery District of Dallas for dinner and exploration, students looked to a second day packed with adventure.

Day two: A non-stop adventure

I think one of the reasons that I probably succeeded in this type of environment was my ability to connect and the relationships that I made with the people I interviewed with. It wasn't just transactional. It's very relational in nature.

Kasey Beiting Campus recruiting specialist, Deloitte

Day two’s itinerary featured visits to the American Airlines corporate campus, Deloitte University and AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, to learn about sales and sports marketing.

First on the list: American Airlines.

Led by Scott Mallory, a campus recruiter for the company, students toured the expansive headquarters asking questions along the way about everything from employee benefits to navigating career changes.

“One of the most significant lessons I learned was the unpredictability of your professional career,” said Manuel Chacon Molina, who is interested in studying international business upon transferring to Lindner. “Observing individuals like Scott Mallory at American Airlines, who began in human resources and progressed across various departments, has reinforced the notion that while academic foundations are crucial, practical experience is fundamental for professional growth.”

Jumpstart students enjoyed their tour of the American Airlines' corporate headquarters.

For Abybatou Diop, a first-year  Jumpstart  student interested in supply chains and international business, the experience was transformative.

“The American Airlines company tour profoundly changed my perspective on the business world, igniting a passion within me," Diop said. "This experience was life-altering, pushing me to think beyond my previous limits. I am forever grateful for the inspiration it has given.”

Still in awe from their first tour of the day, students had even more in store as they headed to Deloitte University, the training grounds for all Deloitte employees.

Students were welcomed by a committee of Deloitte representatives, including several from Cincinnati who made the trip to Dallas to connect with the Jumpstart students.

Jeff Suttle, director, client relations, led students on a facility tour and provided an overview of the purpose of Deloitte University and how it helps the organization to continuously grow and invest in its employees.

Students enjoyed lunch alongside company representatives Jim Sowar, managing partner, Kasey Beiting, campus recruiting specialist, and Zach Wall, audit senior manager. Afterward, Sowar, Beiting and Wall engaged with students in a more formalized Q&A session, providing advice for how to prepare for their future careers, identifying their ideal career path and challenges they may face along their journey.

“In the first couple of years, I wasn't sure what my path to take, but it was really diving in and owning the fact that, if I'm going to be successful, I'm going to have to work hard, I'm going have to put my head down at times that I might not want to,” Wall told students. “But ultimately, that's the way to meeting that goal on that path.”

Deloitte representatives Kasey Beiting (left), campus recruiting specialist, Zach Wall (center), audit senior manager, and Jim Sower (right), managing partner, engaged in a Q&A session with students at Deloitte University.

As an active leader in the campus recruitment process for Deloitte, Beiting was able to offer the students an insider’s point of view on how to approach the interview process.

“I think one of the reasons that I probably succeeded in this type of environment was my ability to connect and the relationships that I made with the people I interviewed with,” said Beiting. “It wasn't just transactional. It's very relational in nature.”

With nearly 40 years of experience in the tax industry, and more than 20 years with Deloitte, Sowar hammered home this point for students.

“Is this candidate going to be able to not only maintain relationships but grow relationships and create new relationships that will lead to new business?” Sowar said of what Deloitte is looking for in its employees. “And that gets into what kind of personal skills do you have? Can you carry out a conversation? Are you asking interesting questions? How do you interact with people in a group setting and so forth? We do notice those things, and I think they really stand up.”

The themes of leadership and relationships expressed by Wall, Beiting and Sowar resonated heavily with students as they thought about their own career trajectories.

“Deloitte's emphasis on nurturing leadership qualities and continuous improvement resonated deeply with me,” said Chacon Molina. “The immersive experience at Deloitte University, allied to a rigorous training program, helps individuals not just with job-specific skills but also with the mindset and capabilities to lead effectively.”

Students took in city views at the Reunion Tower Observation Deck.

Students’ attention then turned to a more light-hearted adventure: a tour of AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. But, before the fun began, the group stopped to connect with Bohn Crain, account executive with the AT&T Stadium sales team.

Crain’s energy and passion for his career path radiated over the students as they took in his message and holy grail advice: network, network, network.

Crain discussed his mission to meet one new person per day and encouraged students to take on the same challenge, as you never know where that connection may lead. Students were able to put this advice into immediate use as they connected with members of the Lindner Career Services team over dinner at Kitchen & Kocktails, a Black-owned business in the heart of Dallas.

Day three: Making connections

The final day of the trip allowed students to continue bonding with one another as they explored all Dallas has to offer, including the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and the Reunion Tower Observation Deck. Through these experiences, students were able to form new bonds and identify new ways that they may support each other into the future, both personally and professionally.

“I thought Dallas was a great experience for the students. They were able to see what their futures could look like, the places that their degree could take them,” said Abbey Wulf, academic adviser to the Jumpstart program. “It was rewarding to see them engaging with different companies and asking them questions. I think they also bonded with one another over this experience and their time together. I personally hope that the bonds created during this trip remain. That they now have people they can lean on at UC Blue Ash and in Lindner once they transition and after graduation.”

Lasting impact and looking forward

The idea behind the Jumpstart program is to plant seeds and watch them grow. By encouraging our students to constantly show up and just do it, no matter how hard it is — a course, a test, a project — we help to push them further so they can thrive.

Arielle Betts Program coordinator, Office of Inclusive Excellence

Top of mind for both students and employers throughout the company visits: diversity, a topic near and dear to many Jumpstart participants’ experiences.

“The most important thing that I learned from our experience in Dallas was how much businesses are in search of diversity and how important it is for them to have as much diversity as possible. Diversity can help them reach their highest peak of success,” said marketing major Cris Mejia-Sanchez.

According to Arielle Betts , the program coordinator behind Jumpstart from Lindner’s Office of Inclusive Excellence , this experience represents another cornerstone of the foundation of the program and what she hopes to achieve with it.

“The idea behind the Jumpstart program is to plant seeds and watch them grow," Betts said. "By encouraging our students to constantly show up and just do it, no matter how hard it is — a course, a test, a project — we help to push them further so they can thrive.”
