Turin, Italy: Basilica of Maria Ausiliatrice (Our Lady Help of Christians)

The basilica of our lady help of christians in turin houses the tombs of three major saints:, 1. tomb of saint john bosco:.

John Bosco founded the Salesian Congregation at Turin in 1864 on the basis of the evangelizing principles of Saint Francis de Sales and his followers, who were were called the Salesians .

Born in 1815, he lived at a time when many families left their farms in hopes of a better life in the cities, only to find out that work conditions were terrible and life expectancy short.  Often children were either orphaned or abandoned and left to roam the streets, stealing and otherwise causing harm not only to others but more importantly to their own souls.  Don Bosco, son of a single mother, sympathized with these children and tried his best to help them. And, in fact, his mother “Mama Margherita Occhiena” would herself be declared venerable by the Church in 2006.

Despite opposition from secular and religious authorities, he persevered and in a few years time, his tireless activity created a network of homes, colleges, lodging-houses, schools, laboratories and recreation homes in Italy and abroad, that have acquired world renown. The reason for the success reached by the Apostle of Youth mainly lies in the fact that Don Bosco wanted his oratories or recreational centers to prepare good Christians and citizens.

He later added the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Our Lady Help of Christians to the male congregation.

His body, partially incorrupt but covered in wax, is kept in a glass reliquary here in Turin at the Basilica of Maria Ausiliatrice (Photo courtesy of the Basilica).

His home has now been turned in to a museum….you can find the website here (in Italian only at this time).  You can see his room, where he died on January 31, 1888.

We celebrate the Feast Day of Saint John Bosco on January 31 .

2.  Tomb of Saint Mary Mazzarello

Body of St. Mary Mazzarello in Turin

Saint John Bosco chose Mary Mazzarello to found the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in 1872 .

She died at Nizza Monferrato on 14th May 1881.

Her body is also venerated in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, near that of Saint John Bosco. She was canonized on 24th June 1951 and her feast is celebrated on 13th May .

3.  Tomb of Saint Dominic Savio:

One of our youngest saints, Dominic Savio.  Born on April 2, 1842 to a devout Catholic family in the village of Riva in northern Italy, he had 9 brothers and sisters.    Even as a small child, Dominic loved Our Lord and His church.  For example, he refused to eat with anyone who did not say grace before every meal and was often seen kneeling before the tabernacle in church.  He received his first Holy Communion at seven (the normal age at that time was twelve),  became an altar server, and attended daily Mass as well as frequent confession.

Dominic studied directly under Fr. Bosco at the Oratory . He was an excellent student. He expressed his desire to become a Saint

His health began to fail him, and although everyone thought he would recover (he predicted he would not and prepared to die a happy death), he died at the age of 17.

st john bosco tour

As people learned about Dominic, they called for his canonization.  Many considered him too young for Sainthood , but he was declared Venerable in 1933 by Pope Pius XI, Beatified in 1950, and then Canonized as Saint in 1954 by Pope Pius XII.

Saint Dominic Savio is the patron saint of choirboys, the falsely accused, and juvenile delinquents .  Many schools and institutions for boys are dedicated to him.

His liturgical feast day is May 6 (originally it was March 9…the day that he died).

Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco 10 Day Pilgrimage to Italy

Activity level, moderate – high, group limit, pilgrimage overview, travel insurance  group name/id:  ca127.

Our Pilgrimage begins today as we depart on our flight to Milan. Meals and drinks served aloft.

Upon arrival in Milan we are welcomed by our HLTC Guide and Driver. We will then make the short journey to Turin where we will enjoy a brief panoramic city tour before arriving at our hotel for dinner and overnight.

We begin the day with a visit to Valdocco, a neighborhood of Turin that’s well known for a complex of buildings related to Don Bosco. The first of these is the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, the final resting place of our Salesian Saints, where we will celebrate a special Mass to mark the eve of the Feast of Mary Help of Christians. Following Mass, we will disperse for lunch before continuing our exploration of Valdocco with visits to the Casa Don Bosco Museum, the Church of San Francesco di Sales and the Pinardi Chapel. Our discoveries culminate at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist where the Holy Shroud is housed along with the tomb of the Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. We will then enjoy an early dinner at a local restaurant before returning to our hotel. For those who wish to participate, the First Vespers will begin around 7pm and a Vigil will be held from 10pm to Midnight.

Today we celebrate the Salesian Feast of Mary Help of Christians alongside thousands of our fellow faithful! After a leisurely breakfast, we will take a few hours to cover any of the sites we missed on our busy schedule from the day before. Plan for an early dinner in advance of an evening Mass followed by a grand procession through the streets of Turin! Late in the evening, we will return to our hotel to rest.

Today we bid farewell to Turin and set out for Mornese. Along the route to Mornese, we’ll have the chance to visit the home of St. Dominic Savio. We then proceed to Colle Don Bosco where we’ll explore the birthplace of St. John Bosco along with the many magnificent structures that have been built to commemorate his life, work, and faith. We then head to Mornese, an idyllic village in the Italian countryside and birthplace of St. Mary Mazzarello and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. Here, we’re treated to a comprehensive tour of the village under the direction of the Salesian Sisters who call it home. Afterwards, we will retire to one of the local facilities run by the Salesian Sisters for a delicious dinner and a deserved rest.

We greet the day with a smile as we bid farewell to Mornese as we depart for Florence. Along the way we will take in the beautiful Italian coastline as we look out across the Ligurian Sea. Once we’ve arrived in Florence we will enjoy a half-day city tour that will feature visits to Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo and the Academia to see Michelangelo’s “David.” Finally, we check in to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Today we depart Florence for Rome. Along the way we are accompanied by picturesque views of the Italian countryside as we eagerly anticipate our first glimpse of the Eternal City. Upon our arrival in Rome, we will transfer to Saint Paul Outside the Walls, one of the four major basilicas in Rome, where we will visit the tomb of St. Paul before enjoying lunch and some free time to stretch our legs. We then continue our journey with a tour of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, a Salesian Basilica in the center of Rome. We close the day by checking in to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Our day begins with an exploration of Vatican City. We begin with a tour of the magnificent St. Peter’s Basilica. We will then discover the Vatican Museums which house many of the Western world’s most important collections of art. Our experience culminates in a visit to The Sistine Chapel, a place where our minds and hearts will surely linger for many years to come. After lunch, we spend the remainder of the day encountering many of the most famous sites of ancient Rome. Sites such as the Pantheon, Forum, Colosseum and Palatine Hill. Later, we return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

With our final full day of the pilgrimage, we will share in the truly unique experience of attending a Papal Audience. An early morning start ensures the best possible view of the Holy Father as he personally greets and addresses the faithful. In the afternoon, we visit the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the oldest basilica of the Western World. We then visit the Basilica of St. Mary Major, one the most important shrines in the world dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Time permitting, we will proceed to the Catacombs of St. Callixtus. At the close of the day, we will enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant before returning to our hotel for a peaceful night of rest.

Today we bid farewell to Italy and begin our journey home. We bring with us memories of fellowship and faith that will last a lifetime.

Thousands Visit Relic of St. John Bosco at Shrine, Cathedral

HOLY MOMENTS—Visitors touch the glass encasing the relic of St. John Bosco at the Marian Shrine in Stony Point Sept. 30. Right, Archbishop Dolan incenses relic during Mass he celebrated at St. Patrick’s Cathedral the next evening.

Crowds of people did not let torrential rain deter them from venerating the relic of St. John Bosco when it was in New York as part of a United States tour. Wearing ponchos and raincoats and carrying umbrellas, and coming from around the metropolitan area, they made their way to the beloved founder of the Salesian order and patron saint of youth. At the Marian Shrine in Stony Point Sept. 30, some 5,000 students from Salesian schools, young people and those with a devotion to the saint came to see the relic. During the day Archbishop Dolan led three short prayer services to accommodate the large numbers of people. Those gathered chanted and cheered for the saint as they waited in tents set up outdoors for their turn at a viewing. At St. Patrick’s Cathedral Oct. 1, people again made their way through the rain to honor St. John Bosco and attend an evening Mass offered by the archbishop. The relic, St. John Bosco’s right hand and arm, is encased in a life-size wax replica of his body, which lies in a glass-sided bronze box. One after another, a continuous line of people walked up to the statue, their hands touching the glass, saying silent prayers to the saint. Explaining the veneration of relics at the Marian Shrine, the archbishop said, “We have his body here in reverence and gratitude so we are reminded of him” to “help us feel closer to God.” St. John Bosco, known as Don Bosco, was born in 1815 in Castelnuovo d’Asti in Italy, and was ordained in 1841. He founded the Salesian Order, and dedicated his life to the young people and poor of the region, with a particular dedication to children who were poor, orphaned or abandoned. He is also the co-founder of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a women’s religious congregation. The archbishop shared three thoughts about the saint, saying that his life teaches people to “never give up” on dreams; always “put God first”; and remember “all of us are made in God’s image and likeness.” With words that seemed to sear into the audience, the archbishop said that just as St. John Bosco saw good in all the children he helped, “God sees Jesus in your soul.” Along with the archbishop was his elementary school teacher, Sister Mary Bosco Daly, R.S.M., who traveled from her home in Ireland to see the relic. Boys from Salesian High School in New Rochelle were among those in Stony Point. One senior, Ethan O’Sullivan, quipped to CNY, “Bosco is the patron saint of umbrella makers. It’s something nobody really knows, so it’s coincidental that it’s pouring.” While that fact may not be entirely true, there is a connection between the 19th century saint and rain. Biographies of St. John Bosco tell that he promised the drought-ridden townspeople of Montemagno rain if they would come to his sermons and go to confession. It did rain, on the feast of the Assumption, as the saint said it would. O’Sullivan continued to talk about Don Bosco with a smile and a laugh, saying, “It was good to see the founder of our school. It’s a great event, a great experience. I’ve looked forward to seeing him in person, in a way.” Another Salesian student, Michael Berman, a junior, added a little more seriously that he wanted to see the relic with his friends because of the saint’s life. “He was such an influential man, not only on kids in his life in Turin,” he said. Nicholas Marricco, a Salesian junior, said, “This is a special moment. The relic doesn’t come out of the cathedral in Rome that often.” He noted that the number of people attending the event “shows the impact he has on children and teenagers, even today.” Marricco remarked that he sees the spirit of Don Bosco in his high school. “In Don Bosco’s eyes, every kid was good. He wanted to make sure the boys were good, that’s what the staff does.” Students from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie also traveled to the Marian Shrine to venerate the relic. Alexandra Lorca, a sophomore, said, “It’s incredible that his hand that touched and did so many things is right there.” Another student, Katherine Klein, a senior, said she admired the joy of St. John Bosco as he helped people. “A lot of people get depressed. You can get a lot out of helping people.” The theme of service and joy of the saint was highlighted throughout the day, and was one of the many reasons people attended. Mathilde Misko from Blairstown, N.J., traveled with her three daughters. “What inspired me about Don Bosco was he took all these boys that people considered worthless and saw their true value,” she said. “The charity and love the boys in Turin received, they gave it to others.” She told CNY that she felt “a close connection to Don Bosco.” At the foot of the saint was a box for petitions. “I thought I was taking my petition and putting it in his hand,” she said. Her daughters, Virginia, 13, Alissa, 11, and Sonja, 15, all told CNY that they felt a special devotion to Don Bosco. Sonja said she watched a movie on Don Bosco and read a book about his life. “Don Bosco does mean a lot to me. He’s easy for me to relate to because he’s so much fun,” she said. René Goldsmith of Sacred Heart parish in Newburgh, an alumna of Mary Help of Christians Academy in New Jersey, a Salesian school, said with a joyful smile, “When you’re a Salesian, you’re always a Salesian!” She said she fondly remembers the nuns who each day would tell students, “Do ordinary things extraordinarily well.” With her was her niece, Megan Fitzsimmons, also an alumna of Mary Help of Christians Academy who is now a junior at the University of New Haven. “Being a Salesian has changed my life,” she said. “It was breathtaking knowing that a piece of heaven was right in front of us, interceding for us.”

Relic statue of St John Bosco to tour Australia for Salesians’ centenary

03 July 2023

Salesians of Don Bosco

The relic statue of St John Bosco, better known as Don Bosco, will be touring Australia as part of the celebrations of the centenary of the arrival of the Salesians on Australian soil. The Salesians first set foot in Australia at Fremantle, Western Australia, on 30 March 1923.

The wax replica of the saint is contained in a glass casket and comes from the Salesian Province of Hong Kong, where it was made by Gianpiero Zoncu at the time of Don Bosco’s beatification in 1929. A small piece of brain from the saint was removed and placed in this wax replica before being securely concealed in the large glass casket.

John Bosco was born on 16 August 1815 in a farmhouse near a small village east of Turin in northern Italy. From the time of his childhood, he felt a strong desire to help young people in need. Pursuing this mission from God, he was ordained as a priest in Turin in 1841, at the age of 26, and dedicated his entire life to helping young people to become ‘good Christians and upright citizens’. Having worked untiringly with the young for more than 40 years, Don Bosco died on 31 January 1888 in Turin. He was declared a saint by Pope Pius XI on Easter Sunday, 1 April 1934, and is the patron saint of young people.

In Catholic Christianity, a relic is an object of great reverence, helping to remind individuals of the holiness of a saint and the fulfilment of God’s work through their life. A relic can consist of anything from the bones of a saint to an object that the saint came in contact with during his or her lifetime.

The 400-kilogram glass casket containing the wax replica of St John Bosco will be received by the Salesian Province Centre in Ascot Vale, Victoria, at the end of June. It will be on tour and displayed for prayers and homage at various Salesian works in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth from July to September 2023.

The relic will stay at the Catholic Leadership Centre in East Melbourne during the Salesian Biannual Educational Conference in August. It will also journey with the Salesians and many lay members to the Centenary Retreat in the last week of September at the Foothills Conference Centre in Mooroolbark.

The relic statue of St John Bosco will be farewelled from Australia during the concluding Mass of the centenary celebrations, to be led by Archbishop Peter A Comensoli on Saturday 30 September at St Margaret Mary’s parish in North Brunswick at 11am.

St John Bosco Relics Perth Tour

With special connection to Perth, St John Bosco’s relics embark on national tour to celebrate Salesian centenary.

In a momentous event, the Salesians of Don Bosco are commemorating a century of service and ministry in Australia.

Dating back to March 30, 1923, when a group of dedicated Salesian missionaries set foot in Fremantle, Western Australia, the centenary celebrations are now in full swing, paying homage to a legacy that has significantly impacted the lives of countless young Australians.

At the heart of these celebrations is a nationwide tour of the relics of St John Bosco, the 19th-century priest renowned for his commitment to the education and empowerment of underprivileged youth.

Encased within an intricately designed glass casket, the relic statue houses a wax replica of the saint’s body, along with a treasured relic.

Kicking off its journey from the Salesian Province Centre in Victoria on July 3, the relic statue’s tour will span several cities across Australia, including notable stops in Perth.

Among the revered sites to host the statue are St Mary’s Cathedral Perth, Kelmscott Parish Good Shepherd Church, Fremantle Parish St Patrick’s Basilica, Lockridge Parish Good Shepherd Church, and Banksia Grove Parish John Paul II Church.

These locations are set to become centres of reverence, prayer, and reflection for the faithful.

ACBC President and Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB will be welcoming the relics to a total of six parishes.

A Salesian himself, ordained in 1986, Archbishop Costelloe has a close connection to the relics and St John Bosco.

“In a world where mentorship and guidance hold immense value, the presence of St John Bosco’s relic statue serves as a poignant reminder of the impact a dedicated individual can have,” Archbishop Costelloe said.

“This nationwide tour echoes Don Bosco’s call to create a positive difference in the lives of young people and the disadvantaged, exemplifying his timeless principles,” he continued.

“St John Bosco has a special place in my heart and inspired me to take up my vocation and join the Salesians and take up my vocation to the priesthood.”

9 Thrilling Facts about St. John Bosco

Table of Contents

St. John Bosco is one of the most famous saints of our time. He had a mission, a calling, and it changed the world!

Now, even after his death, he is still changing lives! Isn’t this the ultimate goal of our lives?

As Scripture says…

“My little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!” – Galatians 4:19

Facts About St. John Bosco

St. John Bosco, also known as Don Bosco, was an Italian Catholic priest and educator who lived in the nineteenth century. He is best known for his work with disadvantaged and impoverished youth in Turin, Italy, where he established a network of schools, technical training centers, and orphanages.

He established the Salesian Society, a religious order of priests and brothers dedicated to child education and care. The Catholic Church declared him a saint in 1934. He is the patron saint of apprentices, editors, magicians, and juvenile delinquents.

Don Bosco was born in Becchi, a small village near Turin, Italy, in 1815. His parents were farmers, and he was the eldest of three children. When he was two years old, his mother died, and his father struggled to raise the family on his own. Don Bosco, despite this, had a happy childhood and was known for his love of people and desire to help others.

st. john bosco

Don Bosco had a dream at the age of nine that would shape the rest of his life. A man appeared to him in his dream and said, “You will be a priest, and you will have to work hard for the salvation of souls.”

From that moment on, Don Bosco knew that he was called to be a priest and to work with young people. ( EWTN )

After completing his education, Don Bosco was ordained a priest in 1841. He began his ministry by assisting poor and disadvantaged youth in Turin. He quickly realized that many of these young people were uneducated and lacked vocational training, so he established a technical school for them. The school was a huge success, and other schools sprouted up all over Italy.

Don Bosco also founded the Salesians religious order. The Salesians were a religious order of priests and brothers who dedicated their lives to the education and care of children. The Salesians now work with children all over the world, running schools, vocational training centers, and orphanages.

Don Bosco’s work with young people extended beyond the borders of Italy. He toured Europe extensively, including South America. He was well-known for his ability to connect with and care about young people. He believed that the best way to help young people become responsible and productive citizens was to educate and train them.

Dreams of St. John Bosco

St. John Bosco, had a number of dreams and visions throughout his life that inspired and guided his mission to help young people. One of the dreams that has changed my life was when his guardian angel took him to the gates of hell!

The following are some of the most notable dreams:

  • The “Oratory Dream”: A dream he had as a young seminarian in which he saw the devil leading a large number of young people astray, and a call to action to save them through education and guidance.
  • The “Tree Dream”: He had a dream in which he saw a large tree representing his work with young people, with branches reaching out to help those in need.
  • The “Two Columns Dream”: A dream in which he saw two columns, one representing a life of virtue and the other a life of vice, and the importance of guiding young people toward the path of virtue.

St. John Bosco was inspired by these dreams to found the Salesian Society, which was dedicated to the betterment of young people, particularly those in need. ( CatholicAnswers.com )

Where are the Relics of St. John Bosco?

The relics of St. John Bosco are located in the Salesian Shrine in Turin, Italy. You can take a fun pilgrimage there and visit many saints in Italy along with our beloved St. John Bosco.

It’s a 2-hour drive from Milan which is a very affordable place to fly into Italy. From there, you can take a train just about anywhere or rent a car.

Here is a guided tour of Milan to show you all the fun that is to be had in Italy. My favorite when I went to Milan was the Duomo Cathedral and getting on a train in Central and going to “Como” Italy which is technically Switzerland! It’s GORGEOUS.

Prayer for St. John Bosco

Here is a prayer to St. John Bosco:

“Dear St. John Bosco, you dedicated your life to the education and care of poor and neglected youth. Help me to follow your example of compassion, charity, and service to those in need. Grant me the wisdom and strength to be a loving and faithful servant of God, and guide me on the path of righteousness and truth. Amen.”

Relic statue of St John Bosco to tour Australia for Salesians’ centenary

st john bosco tour

The relic statue will spend time in the Diocese of Parramatta at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, St Marys, and the Don Bosco Recreational Centre, St Marys – both of which are under the care of the Salesians, from 23 to 28 August.
