MakeMyTrip is not a standalone merchant anymore on the SmartBuy portal and is now a part of the Compare & Stay option that includes Yatra, Cleartrip, and MakeMyTrip. Earlier, you were redirected to a standalone MakeMyTrip merchant portal and had to make the bookings there. However, now you can book MakeMyTrip hotel stays directly from the Compare & Stay section on the SmartBuy portal.

HDFC Bank SmartBuy Offer Key Highlights

HDFC Bank has made a few major changes in the SmartBuy 10x Reward Program. These changes that are applicable with effect from February 2022 are as follows-

  • You get  accelerated Reward Points (2 times to 10 times the regular Reward Points) on the  HDFC Infinia,   Diners Black , Regalia and Diners Club Privilege credit cards and a  10% cashback on most other HDFC credit and debit cards  on travel-related expenses (like hotel/flight/bus/train bookings), Instant Vouchers and on shopping from e-commerce sites like Flipkart.
  • HDFC Regalia and HDFC Diners Club Privilege Credit Cards that used to earn cashback until now will also earn accelerated Reward Points on spends via Smart Buy.
  • The accelerated reward rate as applicable for Regalia and Diners Club Privilege Credit Cards is the same as that for the Infinia Credit Card.
  • The accelerated reward rate on flight and bus ticket bookings via SmartBuy has been reduced to 5x (from 10x earlier).
  • The accelerated reward rate on rail ticket bookings via SmartBuy has been decreased to 3x (from 5x earlier).
  • The accelerated reward rate on Apple store and Instant Vouchers has been reduced to 3x for the HDFC Diners Club Black Card, while it is the same as earlier (5x) for the Infinia Credit Card.
  • The accelerated reward rate on Flipkart has been reduced to 2x (from 3x earlier) for Diners Club Black HDFC Credit Card, while it remains the same for the Infinia Credit Card.
  • Reward Points or Cashback is posted within 90 days from the transaction month’s last date.
  • The reward rate on the various HDFC Credit Cards on Smart Buy as applicable w.e.f. 1st February 2022 is as per the following table-

Reward Rate on SmartBuy for Infinia and HDFC Diners Club Black and HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal Edition Credit Cards-

Reward Rate on SmartBuy for other HDFC Credit Cards-

Apart from the monthly capping, a daily capping is also applicable on the maximum Reward Points that can be earned on Infinia/Diners Black/Regalia/Diners Privilege Credit Card in a given month/day (read on for details). However, there is no daily max capping on the cash back earned on other HDFC Bank Credit Cards.

HDFC SmartBuy offer for HDFC Infinia/Diners Black/Regalia/Diners Privilege Credit Cards

The Infinia and the Diners Black credit cards earn you 5 Reward Points for every Rs. 150 while HDFC Diners Club Privilege/Regalia credit cards earn 4 Reward Points per Rs. 150 spent on all regular purchases. You get bonus Reward Points (due to the accelerated rate of earning RPs) each time you use your Infinia/Diners Black/Regalia/Diners Privilege card for hotel reservations, booking flight/bus/train tickets, shopping from Flipkart, and for purchasing Instant Vouchers (these are gift vouchers redeemable on online stores and offline retail outlets) via the HDFC Bank SmartBuy portal.

Using HDFC Credit Cards on SmartBuy for Maximum Benefit

Now, in order to get the most out of your credit card, i.e. to earn the maximum number of bonus Reward Points possible, you must spend a certain minimum amount in a given month with them— these minimums differ depending upon what category of expenditure they fall under.

Using HDFC Infinia Credit Card on SmartBuy

For the Infinia Card, you may refer to the following table to get an idea of how much you need to spend in a month/day to get the maximum benefit:

A similar calculation can also be done for other HDFC credit cards that earn accelerated Reward Points on SmartBuy:

Using HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Credit Card on Smart Buy

In order to make the most of your HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Credit Card on SmartBuy, you must spend a certain minimum amount with your card as per the following table-

Using HDFC Regalia/Diners Club Privilege Credit Cards on SmartBuy

To earn maximum Reward Points on your HDFC Regalia or Diners Club Privilege credit cards, you must spend a certain minimum amount with the card as per the following table-

Cashback on all other credit/debit cards

As far as all other credit and debit cards are concerned, you get a cashback of 5% (2.5% platform + 2.5% bonanza cashback) on hotel reservations, flight/bus/rail ticket bookings, and on Instant Vouchers; while shopping on Flipkart earns you only 1% cashback (no bonanza cashback in this case). A max capping of Rs. 1,000 is applicable on the cashback that can be earned in a given month.

It is worth noting that the cashback and the Reward Points earned on these credit/debit cards are calculated for a given calendar month (not on the per billing cycle basis) . Another point that you must keep in mind is that you don’t get any cashback with the Infinia and the Diners Black credit cards that earn you accelerated Reward Points.

Minimum Spends Required for Maximum Benefit

As mentioned earlier, only a maximum of Rs. 1,000 can be earned as cashback on other HDFC credit cards at 5% rate, while there is no daily max capping on the cashback that can be earned in a given day. So, in order to earn the maximum cashback in a month (i.e. Rs. 1,000), you must spend a minimum of Rs. 20,000 in that month with your card.

Best Practices to follow for the Flipkart Offer

In order to make sure that you get bonus Reward Points/cashback when shopping on Flipkart, it is advisable to follow certain best practices.

  • Using SmartBuy desktop site. Avoid using the mobile app.
  • It is better to clear your browser’s cache and cookies before you click on the SmartBuy link that redirects you to the Flipkart page. It is important because you get the Reward Points or cashback only if you land on the Flipkart page via the SmartBuy link; to verify this, your browser’s cookies are used. Clearing the cache and cookies ensures that the cookies are tracked properly.
  • You should not have any extension installed on your browser. Even better, use incognito mode while you make the transaction.
  • It is advisable to have the desired items already added to your Wishlist on Flipkart. This will speed up the process.
  • Don’t open multiple tabs/windows at the time of checkout.
  • Make sure that you select your HDFC credit/debit card as the payment method.

How to track your Reward Points

HDFC Bank has recently improved how customers can track their bonus Reward Points. Earlier there was no system in place to track the Reward Points and the points earned were posted randomly after 3 months; now, for every transaction that is eligible for bonus Reward Points, an SMS confirmation is sent to the cardholder’s mobile number. Furthermore, these bonus Reward Points are posted at the end of each month. The bank also just added the option in the credit card statement where it displays what extra bonus points have been earned last month—giving customers more control over their accounts!

The following SMS is sent at the end of each month with regards to the Reward Points earned in that month:

“ 2000 bonus Reward Points credited to your HDFC Bank Credit Card ending XXX on 31/JAN/2023 for SmartBuy Jan 23 .”

The Reward Points earned are displayed in the card’s statement as shown in the image below:

HDFC Infinia Statement

There is still some scope for improvement in HDFC’s Reward Points tracking system. It would be even better if HDFC displays the bonus Reward Points for each individual transaction.

Bottom Line

HDFC’s SmartBuy 10X rewards program used to be even more rewarding until a couple of years ago, it is still one of the most attractive reward programs in the Indian credit card market. Earlier, you used to get 10X Reward Points even on Flipkart, which they have now reduced to just 5X and 3X points.

Also, the maximum cap on Reward Points used to be 25,000 points on Infinia and 15,000 points on the Diners Black credit card per calendar month, and you could earn a maximum cashback of Rs. 2,000 on all other credit and debit cards. Now the maximum cashback has also been capped at Rs. 1,000, except for Regalia and Diners Privilege credit cards that now earn accelerated Reward Points on SmartBuy.

Anyway, without a second thought, at least as far as the credit card market is concerned, HDFC continues to be the leader, and rightly so, as, despite all the devaluations and reward cuts by almost all the card issuers (including HDFC obviously), they continue to offer some of the most rewarding cards, particularly so, in the premium category.

1. How to check HDFC Smartbuy points? You can check your HDFC SmartBuy points simply by logging in to your SmartBuy account with the mobile number that is registered with your HDFC Credit Card.

2. How do I redeem my HDFC SmartBuy voucher? The gift vouchers that you get through HDFC SmartBuy, can be redeemed on the respective brands’ official websites/apps. The gift voucher will mostly be in the form of a code that you can enter at the time of payment to the respective merchant and the eligible discount/cashback will be provided to you.

3. How do I use HDFC SmartBuy on Amazon app? If you want to make a purchase on Amazon under a Smartbuy offer, just click on the Amazon icon on Smartbuy, add the product of your choice to the cart, and pay for it using your HDFC Bank Credit Card.

5. Do I always earn Reward Points or cashback whenever I shop from Flipkart using my HDFC credit/debit card? Certain credit/debit cards including Corporate credit cards, Commercial credit cards, Dealer Credit Cards, Distributor credit cards, Value Plus credit cards, Virtual cards, Jet Privilege debit card, and Times Points debit card are excluded from the offer.

6. Do I earn bonus Reward Points on EMI transactions? Yes, you do earn bonus Reward Points on EMI transactions under this offer. The bonus Reward Points or cashback are calculated on the EMI amount levied that given month.

7. Is the offer applicable on all the purchases from Flipkart? Certain categories are excluded from the offer. You don’t earn Reward Points or cashback on the following categories on Flipkart-

Flight Bookings, Prepaid / Gift Cards, Bill Payments & Recharges Purchase of Video Gaming Consoles & Hardware Jewelry / Gold coins or its equivalent

8.  What is the maximum cashback that I can get on other credit/debit cards (except Infinia, Diners Black, Diners Privilege, and Regalia cards)? A maximum of Rs. 1,000 can be earned as cashback in a given month on all other credit cards.

9. Is this offer applicable on all HDFC credit/debit cards? Certain credit/debit cards including Corporate credit cards, Commercial credit cards, Dealer Credit Cards, Distributor credit cards, Value Plus credit cards, Virtual cards, Jet Privilege debit card, and Times Points debit card are excluded from the offer.

It is advisable to have the desired items already added to your Wishlist on Amazon/Flipkart. This will speed up the process. : this is incorrect. You may ask users NOT to do so to be eligible for the cashback or reward points.

Hi, The items shouldn’t be in cart. But we can have the items in wishlist for easier shopping. I have tested it myself.

It seems the 5% cashback on Regalia card is getting away.. but in this blog you’ve written as if the perks are enhanced.. clarify pls.

Hi, Cashback on Regalia has been replaced with 5x/10x offer.

I guess some of the limits for maximum benefits calculations are not correct. Take Amzon on Infinia for example. For daily limit, it says Rs. 1,12,500. With Rs112500, we get 3750 normal points, and 15000 incremental points, which is double the daily cap of 7500 points. Daily limit should rather be Rs 56250.

Hi Shikhar, there are 2 columns. One is monthly and the other is daily spends. I just rechecked, the numbers in the daily spends column are fine.

So I have the HDFC Millenia which offers 5% CB on spends directly made onto Amazon & FK. My question is via smart buy does it give additional 5% ? Or is smart buy another way to get 5% once I maximise my direct 5% cashback on The Millenia Credit Card

This is from the terms-

A cardholder will be eligible for 1% CashPoints as per product feature if he/she does a transaction through SmartBuy/PayZapp which includes transaction from 10 online merchants also. All other existing SmartBuy/PayZapp offers will be applicable as per SmartBuy/PayZapp Terms & Conditions.

So both are separate offers. With Smartbuy you would be getting 1% + 5% cashback up to Rs 1000 and directly you can get another cashback up to Rs 1000. In total you can get a cashback of Rs 2000 per month.

Is there any offer for platinum debit card customers!!?

If yes how can I redeem that and where can I see and track my rewards …. thanks

travel merchants available on smartbuy

Can someone clarify the daily cap on SmartBuy which is 7500 points, is that for bonus or regular+bonus?

I remember earlier posts mentioning that it is just for bonus so you can spend upto some 56K to hit that limit(for 5X partners). However I just called smart buy customer care, and they were very clear. 7500 includes normal rewards so daily limit is not 56K but 45K. So let’s say you send 50K, you will get 7500 reward points for 45K, and for remaining 5K INR value, you will get 1X points which is 166 points

Merchant Accounts

The 8 best travel merchant account providers, march 23, 2022.

The travel industry is a tricky business. Aside from the fact that transactions are often a couple of thousand dollars on average, there’s the risk of having customers scrap their bookings due to any number of reasons. Canceled flights, inclement weather, changes in plans, and emergencies are just a few of the most common reasons why someone might decide to take their money back.

And when that happens, travel merchants run the risk of incurring chargebacks. Naturally, most acquirers will try to steer clear of businesses that pose a greater threat of chargebacks. But on the upside, there are a few upstanding merchant account providers out that will gladly take on the risk that a travel merchant might come with.

Top 8 Merchant Account Providers for Travel Merchants

Not all merchant account providers will join hands with travel merchants, and that’s mostly because of risk. Compared to most other businesses, travel merchants pose a greater chance of chargebacks which can be equally damaging for acquirers. So to avoid incurring losses, most providers will avoid dealing with high risk merchants like travel businesses altogether.

But that doesn’t mean all is lost. The travel industry is an indispensable unit of present day society, so a handful of acquirers have set out to provide the financial tools necessary to proceed with business and collect payments in the most convenient ways possible.

PayNet Secure

Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, PayNet Secure is one of a few merchant account providers that would gladly accommodate the needs of travel ventures. They accommodate every business in various sectors of the travel industry, including airlines, charters, cruise lines, hospitality, reservations, resorts, tour operations, timeshares, vacation packages, and travel agencies to name a few.

PayNet-Secure travel merchant account provider

While they cater to various high risk businesses, PayNet Secure’s facilities are impressively tailored to meet the needs of merchants in the travel industry. One such feature is the chargeback mitigation alert system that lets you know when a customer might have called their issuing bank to file for a chargeback. This gives vendors the chance to offer a refund instead.

Offering competitive rates, high volume card processing, eCheck payment processing, and excellent customer service, PayNet Secure has satisfied countless clients looking to enjoy hassle-free tools for their travel business. But much like any other provider, their rates remain undisclosed to the public, so you will have to reach out directly to know how much they charge.

Another well-established provider, CorePay caters to both low and high risk merchants by providing tailored solutions that meet each business where they stand. Albeit new to the industry, CorePay has effectively worked with countless merchants by providing polished merchant account services that put safety, security, and efficiency front and center.

So, why choose CorePay? Well, the provider offers a couple of reasons, their first being their high level of security. Their facility uses a PCI Level 1 security feature that’s monitored round the clock for suspicious activity. This means you can get updates on potential threats, and even enjoy protection against probable fraud.

Corepay travel merchant account

Other than that, CorePay has perfected the art of accepting payments in various currencies. As a travel business, this can be an important feature that should allow you to cater to clients from various parts of the globe. This is also one of the reasons why larger travel ventures opt to partner up with CorePay.

Host Merchant Services

As one of the more well-established merchant service providers in the industry, Host Merchant Services is a name you can trust. These guys are the common choice for high-volume merchants, so they might not be quite as practical for small travel agencies and travel services that operate within a very small sphere.

Nonetheless, Host Merchant Services does have some major upsides. For starters, they have a transparent and predictable interchange-plus pricing model. This means that you’ll be able to map out processing fees so you won’t get slapped with charges that you didn’t see coming.

Hostmerchant services merchant account provider

Other benefits of working with Host Merchant Services include no early termination fees, no set up or application fees, no minimum monthly requirements, and expansive features that encourage customer loyalty. On top of all that, Host Merchant Services provides excellent customer support for their clients, delivering quick responses and resolve for most concerns.

Catering to both low and high risk merchants, WorldPay has earned quite the reputation among hard-to-place ventures looking for clean, professional, and polished service. WorldPay delivers competitive merchant account services for travel businesses in various subsectors of the industry.

One of the angles they take includes global reach. For travel businesses, expanding audiences to reach clients from outside of the locality is almost always part of the vision. And that’s why WorldPay empowers its merchants with tools that allow secure payment processing from customers from all around the globe.

And of course, the booking process itself can be pivotal to the customer experience. For travel businesses operating online, WorldPay offers tools and solutions that help to streamline booking payments and prevent hiccups that could disenchant customers and cause them to abandon their plans with your brand.

Durango Merchant Services

Another well-known merchant service provider for high risk merchants, Durango Merchant Services offers its solutions to various travel subsectors, but not all of them. Open to nine different travel-related business types, Durango doesn’t cater to things like charters and hospitality services, so you might want to check their list before you push through with your application.

Nonetheless, if you find your business type on their list, then you can enjoy their range of services that put security at the helm. Their solutions come with an industry-leading fraud detection and prevention tool that helps to minimize the risk and reduce the chances of chargebacks.

Durango travel merchant ccount provider

While they do impose set-up fees, their services definitely make up for the initial cost. They also guarantee competitive rates, integration assistance if you use one of many different kinds of shopping carts, and prompt, dedicated customer support to help you troubleshoot any issues you might encounter along the way.

eMerchant Broker

Unlike other high risk merchant account providers that leave their merchants fending for themselves against chargebacks, eMerchant Broker provides their clients’ actionable solutions to help reduce the risk. They also implement a range of fraud detection and chargeback prevention tools that improve a merchant’s standing and protect both business and bank.

Their services for travel businesses — although limited to certain business types — offer a unique mitigation program that works to reduce a travel merchant’s chargeback rate to bring it down to a workable ratio for most financial service providers. EMB has partnered with Verifi to develop a program that empowers merchants to resolve credit card transaction disputes directly.

This gives their merchants the upper hand in dealing with chargebacks and provides the opportunity to offer less damaging ways to respond to disgruntled customers, like refunds, store credit, and more. With zero application fees, competitive rates, and excellent fraud prevention features, EMB aims to help merchants protect their business from all angles.

PayKings is slightly different from the average travel merchant service provider in that they also work with B2B travel vendors. This means you can get solutions for your business even if you don’t directly work with end-users. The PayKings provider is partnered with over 20 different acquiring banks, allowing them to serve up speedy approval for all of their applicants.

What’s particularly nice about PayKings is that they’ll also work with vendors that might have had their application rejected in the past or those who might have had a previous merchant account closed for whatever reason. This means that PayKings can work with notably high risk merchants that might struggle to get the same services elsewhere.

PayKings travel merchant service

Other than that, PayKings works to make sure that your business has access to a wide range of payment and protection tools and features. Complete with chargeback prevention tools, mobile payment solutions, EMV readers, 3D secure checkout, eCheck payment processing, and more, PayKings guarantees hassle-free options for clients from around the globe.

Having been around for the best part of 25 years, Elavon is a name that’s synonymous with professionalism. These guys offer solutions for high risk travel merchants whether on or offline and deliver prompt customer support that’s available any time of the day, any day.

They cover a range of businesses in different sub-sectors of the travel industry, making them accessible to clients in various markets. Their end-to-end payment solutions prioritize security, convenience, and efficiency with user-friendly tools that easily integrate with the most popular shopping carts.

Allowing payment acceptance in any environment — whether on or offline — Elavon also makes sure that their merchants get to enjoy supreme control over their transactions by offering reporting and management tools that provide unrivaled transparency and real-time monitoring.

Over to You

Being a travel merchant in today’s competitive industry can be tough, but with a merchant account, you should be able to expand your reach and provide customers with payment options and security that can encourage profitable consumer action. But don’t just sign up with any merchant account provider. These eight vetted choices are some of the best in the business and represent what it means to provide world-class service that’s worth every penny.

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently

Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Russ , I see you are quite near San Francisco - you can start by looking at the VISA procedure , it's fairly straightforward . Since there is a consulate in San Francisco - look here http://www.consulrussia.org/eng/visa-sub1.html

And here - http://ils-usa.com/main.php

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. It breaks down the alphabet into letters that are the same as English, letters that look the same but are pronounced differently, etc. It's out of print, but you can get used copies on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Beginners-Russian-Script/dp/0071419861/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459701143&sr=8-2&keywords=teach+yourself+russian+script

Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

Thanks for all the good advice. Any additional thoughts are welcomed.

One of history's seminal works pertaining to Russian history and culture and a MUST for anyone contemplating a visit or simply interested , is this fine work from 1980 - http://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-The-Beauty-Russia/dp/096441841X

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Here is our visit: https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/an-easy-trip-to-the-catherine-palace/ There are also snapshots of the Church on Spilled Blood in this photo journal. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place. This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. Whatever you do, I'm sure that you will love St Petersburg! Ashley

I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!
