WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

testimonials_background.jpg

Wonderful Experience

Booked this as a surprise for my husband and to say he was thrilled is an understatement. The staff that checked us in were very friendly and organized. Went over safety and weighed in before boarding. Our pilot, Josh was wonderful. Josh was informative and helpful. This is an amazing experience. The glacier is beautiful and we brought a bottle to drink the water. Cool that you can hear the glacier crack. So glad we did this!

best glacier exploration tour!

My whole camera roll is of our heli tour! We did a glacier exploration tour (2hours) where we flew and landed next to the glacier and hiked along the walls. It was absolutely incredible. Michael and Kate were the best pilot/guide we could ask for! We got so lucky with sun & beautiful weather even in the winter! I cannot wait to come back in the summer to experience more of their tours. The helicopter flight and views absolutely do not compete with any other experience. It was worth every penny!!! Would do it again in a heartbeat!

Took my elderly mum on the heli-dog and extra glacier landing trip! Amazing! They took very good care of her and everyone was so very patient and kind. Don’t even hesitate to include the extra glacier landing!! It is straight out awesome and so very special! It is definitely worth the extra cost !!!

Amazing Experience

This was hands down the best experience we’ve had in Alaska. We hit the glacier tour with landing. Our pilot was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He explained what we were seeing - from why the ice is blue to moulins and more! Walking on the Knik Glacier was surreal. Highly recommend.

Ready to take ‘flying by the seat of your pants’ to a whole new altitude? Here are the 13 best helicopter tours in Alaska!

13 Best Alaska Helicopter Tours

Hold onto your parkas, because we’re about to elevate your Alaskan experience with these top-notch helicopter tours, each offering a unique perspective of Alaska’s breathtaking, icy wilderness.

From glacier landings to wildlife sightings , these tours are more than just a joyride – they’re your passport to an airborne adventure you’ll be telling your family and friends about!

🚁1. Alaska Helicopter Tour with Glacier Landing – 60 mins – ANCHORAGE AREA

It is definitely possible to see other Alaska helicopter tours during your trip

Ever considered experiencing Alaska by drinking glacial water right from the glacier itself? Well, you’ll get the chance on this top-rated tour!

The tour kicks off with a delightful helicopter flightseeing experience over the Anchorage area from Palmer. You’ll be treated to an aerial spectacle of Alaska’s rugged terrain, highlighting its enchanting coastline and patternless mountains. Amidst them, you’ll witness the stunning Knik River and Great Gorge.

Next, bid adieu to your helicopter ride for a bit as you touch down on the secluded Whiteout Glacier for a guided hike. Experience the thrill of treading on unspoiled snow, and don’t forget to snap a selfie with the icy landscape as your backdrop.

This tour is a year-round favorite, offering a 30-minute Frozen Ice formation walk during winter. This is easily the #1 Alaska helicopter tour out of the Anchorage area , so be sure to book well in advance if you want a spot for your trip!

🚁2. Juneau Shore Excursion: Helicopter Tour and Guided Icefield Walk

helicopter tour in alaska

On this tour, you’ll embark on a narrated helicopter trip to the stunning Herbert Glacier, get the chance to take a sip of the natural flowing water, and enjoy a guided walk across the vast Juneau Icefield!

Having hiked this iconic route myself, Sean and I have always said the next time we return will be in a helicopter.

Perfect for families with a few hours to spare in Alaska’s capital of Juneau, this tour has over 300 5-star reviews and continues to claim one of the top-rated Alaska helicopter tour spots on this list! If I were you, I would make booking this tour a top priority.

If you do plan on spending some time in the 49th state’s capital fo Juneau, don’t forget that it’s one of the best whale-watching spots in Alaska! I even have 10 Incredible Juneau Whale Watching Tours to prove it.

🚁3. Grand Knik Helicopter Tour – 2 hours 2 landings – ANCHORAGE AREA

helicopter tour in alaska

Have a few hours to spare during your time in the Anchorage area? This small group helicopter tour out of Palmer is just the thing!

On top of one full hour of exhilarating flight time, guests will enjoy two landings, with one of them being on the iconic Alaskan Knik Glacier. Knik Glacier helicopter tours can be hard to come by, so the fact that this tour actually lands on the glacier is a true rarity.

Following your flight through the Knik River Valley, you’ll get a second opportunity to land in a stunning alpine region with ample opportunities to spot local wildlife including moose, bears, and even Dall sheep!

🚁4. Juneau Helicopter Tour and Guided Icefield Walk

Before going on of these Alaska helicopter tours, you should take into account how comfortable you are with heights and the possibility of some turbulence

If you were hoping for a combination of glacier trekking (don’t worry, it’s for people of all ages!) and flightseeing, then this is the best helicopter tour in Juneau for you.

Step foot on the beautiful Herbert Glacier (though, depending on the weather, you may also go to Taku Glacier, Norris Glacier, or Lemon Glacier!), test the icy glacial waters that run through its crevices, and learn about the history of the glacial progression over time.

🚁5. Glacier Landing Tour from Girdwood

helicopter tour in alaska

Earning Viator’s Badge of Excellence is no easy feat, and this Glacier Landing Tour from Girdwood absolutely deserves the praise!

With flight time dedicated to the mountains and glaciers peppering the Chugach National Forest (one of my personal favorite regions in all of Alaska), guests on Alpine Air Alaska will get to step foot on some of the state’s oldest ice formations.

If you’re lucky, you might even be able to spot a few local mammals (like moose and bears!) in their natural habitat.

And of course, for the shutterbugs out there – this scenic tour gives plenty of opportunities to capture some truly breathtaking aerial shots! So make sure to bring your cameras and phones on this one.

🚁6. Prince William Sound Tour with Glacier Landing from Girdwood

There's nothing like stepping foot on a glacier during an Alaska helicopter tour

Another impressive tour earning Viator’s Badge of Excellence, this enticing Alaska helicopter tour from Girdwood takes you soaring over the breathtaking Prince William Sound!

Enjoy a glacier view window seat as you take in a bird’s eye view of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and potential wildlife in Alaska’s beautiful Chugach Range.

Following your glacier landing (the specific glacier will be dependent on weather), you’ll get the opportunity for stunning photos of the Sound and the surrounding national forestry.

If flightseeing and glacier tours are on your Alaska must-do list (they should be…), then this is the ultimate tour you can take from Girdwood!

🚁7. Ketchikan Helicopter Tour, Top of the World

helicopter tour in alaska

Departing from the heart of Alaska’s southeastern coast, this helicopter tour from Ketchikan not only provides stunning aerial views of the Tongass National Forest and even the Canadian Rockies, but also the opportunity to land on a local mountaintop!

With a very small group size (maximum 3 people) and a knowledgeable pilot, you’ll get an in-depth look at the local glaciers, mountains, and even wildlife in Ketchikan!

Besides, we all know that the photos are some of the best souvenirs from Alaska you can bring home.

P.S. if you’ll be spending time in Ketchikan, here are the 7 BEST Ketchikan Fishing Charters you can take in 2024 !

🚁8. Glacier and Mountain Viewing Tour

In the summer months you can see the lush, green mountains surrounding the glaciers on these Alaska helicopter tours

I promise Viator doesn’t give out these awards willy-nilly, but this Glacier and Mountain Viewing Tour is also among the award-winning Alaska helicopter tours that are definitely worth your time if you’ll be heading to Seward (where Sean and I got married before living in Alaska !)

Now, it’s quite a quick tour which is perfect if you have some time to waste following your Kenai Fjords Tour before your dinner reservation at Ray’s Waterfront Restaurant (another personal favorite).

On this tour, you’ll soar across the absolutely enchanting Resurrection Bay (it’s where the mountains meet the sea and ocean life is plentiful) where you’ll have views of 4 different glaciers and even floating icebergs!

With a landing on the remote Godwin Glacier, you’ll even get a chance to photograph the incredible seascapes and landscapes that make Alaska so unique.

If you’re extra lucky, you might even spot some humpback whales or sea otters while on your aerial tour!

🚁9. Extended Bear Glacier Scenic Flight

helicopter tour in alaska

Departing from Seward, you’ll be treated to probably the most scenic 45 minutes of your life . Not only will you get to soar over some of the most stunning glaciers and Alaskan wildlife, but you’ll also be able to spot Mt. Harding (one of the highest peaks in the Kenai Mountains)!

In the summer, you’ll witness cascading waterfalls, and year-round you will fly through the fjords that make up the beautiful Kenai Fjords National Park. Along the journey, you’ll fly by the impressive Bear and Aialik Glaciers making for presumably the best Alaska helicopter tour leaving out of Seward !

🚁10. Helicopter and Glacier Paddle Boarding – PRIVATE

Alaska helicopter tours provide ample opportunities for great photos

Whether you want to have some fun with your friends or are hoping to pop the question to your partner, there are a lot of reasons why a private Alaskan helicopter tour is a great idea! And this one seriously ticks all the boxes in our opinion.

This half-day tour has you enjoying everything from aerial views to mountaintop landings, and even the chance to paddle board through the stunning glacial waters of a remote area of Alaska!

Easily one of the most adventurous tours on this list, if you get to go on this tour during your trip I will be insanely jealous.

🚁11. Winter Helicopter Ice Climbing Adventure

helicopter tour in alaska

Another amazing tour option for the adventure-seeker in your life, this exhilarating outing combines your Alaska helicopter tour with none other than ice climbing !

Start your journey with a stunning flight over the Chugach Range and several glaciers including Colony and Knik before stepping foot on the ice. From here, you’ll suit up in the appropriate climbing gear and get started on your ascent of the area’s breathtaking ice formations!

Don’t worry though, you aren’t required to climb anything you aren’t comfortable with, and there are different challenge levels available for each guest. It’s also a very small group tour with a maximum of 3 guests allowed, so you’re guaranteed all of the attention you may need during the trip.

🚁12. Helicopter Combo Tour in Ketchikan

The best part of going on an Alaska helicopter tour is flying over the open crevices in the glaciers

Want to get the most sightseeing out of your Alaska helicopter tour without any time on the ground? Then this is the tour for you.

During the flight, you’ll hit numerous regions of southeast Alaska including the beautiful 1,500-foot Mahoney Falls and George Inlet all the way to the Tongass Narrows. Along the route (and on a clear day), guests will enjoy epic views of Prince of Wales Island in conjunction with the snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies!

Perfect for those with limited ability or children too young to be trusted on a glacier, the Helicopter Combo tour in Ketchikan is the ultimate choice.

🚁13. 30-Minute Flightseeing Tour from Girdwood

Many companies who run Alaska helicopter tours will bring you to a glacier and allow you to taste the glacial water

Short on time but want to pack as much as possible into every second of your trip to Alaska? We’ve got you.

In just 30 minutes, you’ll take off from Girdwood (home to the Girdwood Brewing Company – one of our favorites!) and initially take in the views from the captivating Seward Highway and Turnagain Arm.

This region is known for its expansive wildlife populations, so you may even have some animal sightings during your trip! From there, you’ll continue to explore the Alyeska Range, numerous glaciers, and get the best bird’s eye view of the journey between Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula.

Perfect for people of all ages, this 30-minute flightseeing tour from Girdwood packs a lot into a short amount of time!

FAQ: Alaska Helicopter Tours

Here, we’re going to dive into answering some important questions you’ll need to know before jetting down the runway!

Are Helicopter Tours Worth the Money?

helicopter tour in alaska

Helicopter tours are worth every single penny you put in. They’re not only an exciting way to experience Alaska’s breathtaking landscapes, but they also provide unique access to remote and otherwise inaccessible areas.

These tours are designed with safety as a top priority and often include knowledgeable, local pilots that share engaging facts and stories about the scenery and wildlife you encounter.

So, if you’re seeking a truly unforgettable Alaskan adventure, then a helicopter tour is definitely worth the money.

What is the Best Time for a Heli Tour?

Make sure to bring a good camera if you plan on going on one of these Alaska helicopter tours

The best time for a heli tour in Alaska is during early summer to early fall – around June through October .

The weather is typically more predictable and the days are longer (thanks to that glorious midnight sun!), giving you more daylight hours to marvel at the breathtaking Alaskan landscape from above.

Sure, it’s going to be a bit colder in the fall, but this is when we were rewarded with one of the clearest days of the year. Our summer flightseeing tour actually got canceled three times due to rain and poor visibility, so don’t bank on the summer months being the best for heli tours in Alaska.

Are Helicopter Tours Cold?

It's important to dress properly for your Alaska helicopter tour since it can get very cold

Especially in Alaska, helicopter tours can get quite cold! The first time Sean and I took a flightseeing tour around Mount Denali from Talkeetna, my hands were so cold (with gloves on) that I could barely take pictures.

Since you’ll be leaving civilization behind and entering a world of mountaintops, glaciers, and let’s face it… snow (yes, even in the summer months), it’s going to be imperative that you bundle up for any of the Alaska helicopter tours listed above!

For more details on the type of weather you can expect during your trip, check out How Cold is Alaska? Alaska Temperatures in 2024

What do you Wear on a Helicopter Tour in Alaska?

Many Alaska helicopter tours have you landing on a glacier

For a helicopter tour in Alaska, layering is key. Start with a base layer of thermal or moisture-wicking clothing to keep you dry and warm.

Add a mid-layer such as a fleece for insulation, followed by a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against the elements.

Don’t forget a pair of sturdy, warm boots, gloves, a winter hat, and sunglasses for the glare. Remember, it’s better to be overdressed than underprepared – you can always remove a layer if you’re too warm!

What are the Best Helicopter Tours in Alaska?

Alaska helicopter tours provide an excellent view of the surrounding mountain ranges

While there are dozens of amazing companies all across the 49th state , the best helicopter tours in Alaska include the Denali Experience Flightseeing Tour from Talkeetna (it’s actually in a bush plane, but it was my favorite flight in Alaska of all time), the 60-minute Alaska Helicopter Tour with Glacier Landing from Palmer , and the 2-hour Grand Knik Helicopter Tour !

What Helicopter Tours in Alaska are Good for Avoiding Crowds?

If you're trying to avoid the crowds on these Alaska helicopter tours, it's good to remember that you may be landing on the glacier with other companies

Fortunately, due to the nature of the size of a helicopter, you’ll rarely be with more than a few people during your flightseeing tour.

However, since many helicopter tour companies communicate on the safest routes and glaciers to land on each day, there’s a good chance that when you land you’ll be with a larger group than you started.

Don’t let that put you off though, everybody will be there for the same pictures and views, so you’ll get the same opportunity as everyone to see the best spots!

Can You See Wildlife on Alaska Helicopter Tours?

It is likely that you will see wildlife on most Alaska helicopter tours

One of the fantastic perks of Alaska Helicopter Tours is the opportunity to spot diverse wildlife in their natural habitats.

From the sky, you might catch sight of majestic creatures like moose, bears, bald eagles, and even the occasional roaming caribou. And let’s not forget the marine wildlife! If you’re flying over the coastal areas or near the glaciers, you might spot whales, sea otters, or seals lounging on the icebergs.

Do note, however, that wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed as animals in the wild are unpredictable and can move areas depending on the season and food availability.

Are Alaska Helicopter Tours Safe?

Alaska helicopter tours are generally very safe. All reputable companies place a high emphasis on safety, and pilots are well-trained and experienced, especially in navigating Alaska’s unique weather conditions and terrain.

Before takeoff, you’ll receive a safety briefing to ensure you’re well-prepared for the ride. Additionally, helicopters are regularly inspected and maintained to meet strict safety regulations.

It’s important, however, to book with a trustworthy company that has a good safety record and reviews. Remember, while nothing is 100% risk-free, these measures greatly enhance the safety of your unforgettable adventure in the Alaskan skies.

If you want to know more about what you can do to stay safe during your tour, take a look at this Helicopter Passenger Safety Guide .

Quick and nimble in their ability to reach remote corners of the state, helicopters are a popular way to tour Alaska's otherwise unreachable locations. If you're looking for an excursion to top all others, consider a helicopter flightseeing adventure. Alaska Tour & Travel has several options available, often with a glacier landing, sled dog ride, or alpine hike added for even more thrills.

One of the most popular heli-tours is 40 minutes south of Anchorage in the small ski town of Girdwood . Here guests are whisked onto Punch Bowl Glacier for a Glacier Sled Dog tour featuring Alaska's canine athletes at their summer training camp location. After a short helicopter ride, you can experience the thrill of mushing behind a dog team in one of the most pristine places in the world. A similar trip can be accessed just north of Anchorage on the Knik Helicopter Glacier Sled Dog flight , which flies to Colony Glacier overlooking the scenic Knik River valley.

Interested in alpine hiking? Helicopters can touch down on rocky ridge lines with ease, allowing for access that normally would take days, or even weeks, to reach. The Knik Heli-Hiking Adventure is one option. It combines helicopter flightseeing with a backcountry hike in the Chugach Mountains.

The area east of Denali National Park also offers heli-hiking and glacier landing tours. From the Denali Park area, Denali Glacier Landing guests soar up and over the eastern Alaska Range's craggy ridges before settling upon an ice field for a bit of glacial exploration.

Active adventurers looking for an immersive backcountry experience will enjoy a three-hour Denali Heli-Hiking Adventure . A naturalist guide leads the trek, picking a path that suits every interest and fitness level while pointing out flora and fauna native to the Denali National Park area.

While visiting Denali National Park, be sure to pair your helicopter tour with other park activities like a bus tour or sled dog kennel visit to round out the experience.

Your Glacial Landing

Landing on Kink Glacier - Heli Alaska

When we land, your pilot will help you put crampons on your shoes blue ice field exploration. You’ll then have lots of time to take photos or videos. Explore the Knik Glacier ice sheet, glacial melt pools, and enjoy the views. If you’re brave, you can take a dip in the glacial melt pools – it’s a chilly experience like no other! Remember to bring dry clothes or a towel if you plan to jump in. If you’re not up for a dip but still want to have fun, try a glacial mud mask. People often pay over $35 for an Alaskan mud mask in a jar. But here, you can have the real experience right on the glacier!

Video from  AlaskaStateParks : Chugach State Park borders Alaska’s largest city, the Municipality of Anchorage, and is a 495,000-acre dream-come-true for outdoor enthusiasts. Once you’ve visited Chugach State Park, you will understand why Alaskans rarely leave The Last Frontier State in summer.

Our Knik Glacier Helicopter ride takes you southeast of Wasilla and Anchorage, through Chugach State Park. This park is massive! It covers over 495,204 acres in the coastal region of South-central Alaska. This means lots of fun for locals and visitors alike. The park was created in 1970 to protect the stunning Chugach Mountains, to secure water for Anchorage, and to offer plenty of recreational activities. The Chugach Mountains are known for their untouched forests.

Alaska State Parks looks after Chugach State Park. It’s the third-largest state park in the U.S., just behind California’s Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Alaska’s Wood-Tikchik State Park . To give you an idea of its size, Chugach State Park could fit New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago within its boundaries!

Glaciers You Will See

Lake Eklutna - HeliAlaska

1: Eklutna Glacier

Within Chugach State Park and the Chugach Mountains, you’ll find the Eklutna Glacier. It’s located west of the Lake George Glacier. Also known by its Dena’ina name, Idlu Bena Li’a, this glacier feeds into Lake Eklutna. Stretching seven miles and vital for Anchorage. It supplies the city’s drinking water and powers the Eklutna Hydroelectric Project . This project provides electricity to over 24,000 homes and is the most cost-effective renewable energy provider in south-central Alaska.

Just like all of Alaska’s glaciers, Eklutna is shrinking due to climate change. It’s losing more ice each summer than winter snowfall can replace. This affects Eklutna Lake, which is Anchorage’s main water source.

Whiteout - Heli Alaska

2: Whiteout Glacier

After the Eklutna Glacier, you’ll fly over large ice fields and rivers of ice before moving over Whiteout Glacier. There are stunning aerial views our water crossings en route.

Did you know both the Whiteout and Eklutna Glaciers were military training sites in the 1950s to mid-1970s? Soldiers trained here for arctic warfare, learning skills like cross-country skiing and glacier-travel safety. This training prepared them for potential conflicts in Northern Europe and other areas during the Cold War.

The Mountaineering Club of Alaska built a cabin, later named Hans Hut, on Whiteout Glacier. You can read notes from travelers who stayed in the cabin over nearly three decades at the Alaska Digital Archive .

In 1963, the Mountaineering Club of Alaska named the glacier after the nearby Whiteout Peak. At 6818 feet high, the peak is a challenging climb. The glacier hike itself can be tricky to cross due to frequent storms and crevasses. Many adventurers have taken shelter in the glacier cabin during storms.

3: Lake George Glacier

Helicopter Tour over Glacier - Heli Alaska

As you move away from Whiteout Glacier, you’ll get your first look at Lake George Glacier. Historically each spring and summer, as the glacier started to melt, it would fills up North America’s largest glacier-dammed lake. The Knik Glacier’s advance closed off the glacier lake as it came into contact with the mountain slope to the west. For almost 49 years until 1967, the lake would fill up each spring. In the summer, the dam would break, sending a flood of water down the Knik River glacial carved valley. Because of this annual flood, bridges on the highway and railroad about 20 miles away had to be reinforced.

Colony Glacier - DigitalGlobe, Google

4: Colony Glacier

South of Lake George, you’ll find Colony Glacier. Also known as Diltishi Bena Li’a, it sits at an elevation of 1037 ft or 316 m. Each year, it calves into the lake. Over to the east of Colony Glacier, the majestic Mount Gilbert stands tall at 9638 ft or 2938 m. The glacier mountain is named after Grove Karl Gilbert, a member of the 1899 US Geological Survey Harriman Expedition. They were tasked with exploring this area. If you’re interested, you can find more about Mount Gilbert and Karl here .

5: Inner Lake George

Inner Lake George - Heli Alaska

The area around Colony Glacier is stunning. With waterfalls, blue ice formations, and green slopes. The glacier terminates into Lake George, and sometimes you can see it calving at the toe. The glacier’s toe reaches into the lake and cascades down a high face. All that’s left of the larger Lake George we talked about earlier is Inner Lake George. In 1967, Lake George was named a National Natural Landscape. On our Knik helicopter tours, you’ll often see mountain goats around the Colony Glacier area.

This short film from the Alaska Film Archives shows how Lake George breaks through the Knik Glacier. But keep in mind, this natural event, which used to happen every year, hasn’t occurred since 1967. The film is a silent, color, super 8mm clip from the Stewart’s Photo Shop collection at the Alaska Film Archives. If you’d like to know more, please visit the Alaska Film Archives .

Knik Glacier Terminus - Heli Alaska

As the Knik Glacier Helicopter Tour’s namesake and one of the largest glaciers in south-central Alaska, the grand Knik Glacier is overall 50 miles East of Anchorage on the northern edge of the Chugach Mountains. This ice field averages over 25 miles or 40 km in length and in addition is over 5 miles or 8 km in width making it perfect for a glacier walk. Most impressively, it’s about 400 ft or 120 m thick, in reality that’s over 28 stories of ice! That’s a wall of ice 2.5 times taller than the Statue of Liberty.

The Knik Glacier itself seen on the tour is inaccessible by road. Typically it’s reached via helicopters, planes, or jetboats. However, some intrepid hikers or in addition fat bike riders, can make the 8-mile journey. Unlike helicopters, however, no other methods can access the glacial walk. The 5-mile-long face of the blue glacier fronts into the Knik River, subsequently breaking apart or calving and falling into the glacier fed river. The western part of the face is the area that used to block Lake George during the winter months. Witness this all from above during your tour. To find out more about the grand Knik Glacier, visit  www.alaska.org .

Photography During Your Knik Glacier Helicopter Tour

Knik Glacier Landing - Heli Alaska

Imagine flying over not just one, but five glaciers. It’s a dream come true for many photographers and adds a unique birds eye perspective. Join us on a Knik glacier helicopter ride to experience the beauty from a new angle. Glaciers and blue ice formations are truly a wonder of nature. They’re huge and simply amazing to see. Sometimes, you might even see giant chunks of ice falling into the lakes. While we can’t promise this will happen, we can suggest the best times for photography flights. Book your tour with Heli Alaska, Inc. to see this breathtaking icy landscape, full of glaciers, mountains, and lakes in a way you’ll never forget.

Your Knik Glacier Helicopter Flight

You can start your tour from our partner locations in the Mat-Su Valley. We can pick you up from the dock at Mat-Su Resort or the back lawn at Lake Lucille Inn . Visit our contact page for details on how to find us and how to get in touch.

On the Anchorage helicopter tour, you’ll fly through Chugach State Park in one of Heli Alaska’s R44 helicopters . Our local pilots know all about the area, plants, and animals, and they’ll guide you on your trip. Don’t worry if the weather looks cloudy. Sometimes, the best views can be on cloudy days. Of course, we love a sunny day too! But seeing glacier mountain peaks through a layer of clouds or fog in the glacial carved valley can be really beautiful.

Recreation in Chugach State Park

A cyclist in the Mountains along the helicopter tour route - Heli Alaska

Alaska has bigger and wilder wilderness areas than Chugach State Park, but none are as close to a big city or as full of wildlife. The park is easy to access and offers activities for all skill levels. It has 16 trailheads leading to 280 miles of trails. You can do so many different things here: hiking, biking, horseback riding, glacier exploration, helicopter tours, hunting, fishing, camping, gold-panning, ATV riding, snowmobiling, Anchorage glacier tour viewing, photography, and animal viewing, to name a few.

If you love nature and landscape photography, you’ll love this park. It’s a popular spot for photographers because of its diverse wildlife and the rugged beauty of the Chugach Mountains including water crossings and glaciers. The park is home to over 45 different mammal species. That includes nearly every species found in Alaska. The park’s 495,000 acres are estimated to be home to over 1,000 moose, 80 black bears, 40 brown bears, 2,000 Dall sheep, a wolf pack, and populations of lynx, beavers, river otters, foxes, and mountain goats.

  • ChzHeadTX 0 contributions Outstanding Dog Sled Mushing Tour!!!! We took the dog sledding tour, Aiden was our guide, everything was excellent and well beyond expectations. Aiden talked great story during the van ride, he got to know us as individuals, and he was always safe and professional. The Dallas Seavy Iditarod kennel and dog sledding was incredible, truly amazing. Really great guides and handlers, very cute puppies we held, and we got to mush our own sled. The mushing goes fast as the trail is a 3 mile loop and you switch half way. The five dogs run at about 9 mph and the musher has full control. It’s all safe because there are lead and back snow machines if something goes wrong. Do this, it is worth every penny. Salmon Berries is an outstanding tour company, one of the very best! Oh, and lunch was at Denali Brewery in Talkeetna, nice surprise! Read more Written February 23, 2024
  • Camper61333090829 0 contributions Salmon Berry knocked it out of the park! Just got back from the February Anchorage to Fairbank Aurora tour and it was amazing! Salmon Berry makes everything so easy, I'll definitely book with them again for upcoming visits to Alaska. Harrison is an amazing guide, the groups are not too big, and the accommodations are great! Not only do they take care of most meals, transportation, tickets, etc., but you learn so much during the trip about Alaska, its history, the Aurora, and stuff I never even thought to ask about. I highly recommend Salmon Berry for your trip, you won't regret it. Read more Written February 15, 2024
  • CoachSB 0 contributions Turnagain Tour We were in Anchorage for one day. We found Salmon Berry Tours in one of the magazines from hotel lobby. We decided to do the Turnagain tour because it included stops at Wildlife Conservatory and Mt. Alyeska. I called at the very last minute on the day of the tour and they worked us in! Very grateful for that. As the driving part of the tour began, our guide, Michelle, received a call from her boss informing her that we could not drive to the Wildlife Conservatory because avalanche prevention work was going to block the road leading there. So we went to the Alaska Zoo, which was a huge disappointment. Michelle did her best to talk about the few animals we saw at the zoo. I understand why the switch happened, but that didn't change the fact that I was very disappointed. The rest of the tour was outstanding! Michelle is a fountain of information about the area. Lunch was delicious. Read more Written February 12, 2024
  • Daydream30719056809 0 contributions Salmon Berry has it figured out We recently completed the 5 night Northern Lights Tour with Salmon Berry Tours. This was a bucket list trip for my wife’s birthday, and the folks at Salmon Berry made it a special experience. Glenda was extremely helpful in planning the details of the surprise trip. And we can’t say enough about our guide, Harrison, who stayed with our group throughout the trip and handled all details. He is a big asset for their team. We started in Anchorage and took the train to Fairbanks. We were able to see the Northern Lights 2 out of 3 nights in Fairbanks. The dog mushing and hot springs were also highlights. Hotels and meals were great throughout the trip. They had all the details figured out, and I strongly suggest that you rent their winter gear. It kept us warm throughout the trip, with the daily highs around -25 degrees. We enjoyed our time with the rest of the travelers in our 10 person group. So glad we were able to experience Alaska with Salmon Berry. Read more Written February 6, 2024
  • TimWyg 0 contributions Wonderful, guided tour of Matanuska Glacier in January. Michelle and Kohl were the guides of our Matanuska glacier tour, and they were incredible. Both are very knowledgeable and friendly, and they have a good understanding of the history and geology (ice-ology?) of the region. It was also fun spotting for moose and bald eagles during our trip out of Anchorage. Before commencing our hike, we were outfitted with cleats and helmets (definitely necessary), and had the opportunity to enhance our preps by (optionally) borrowing additional balaclavas, mittens, or other protective gear. Possibly contrary to reviews published elsewhere, this hike is fairly strenuous - especially if you are a person in slightly advanced age or tend to be somewhat sedentary. I meet both of those qualifying conditions and I had few problems, but my wife sustained a minor groin injury early in the trip that required her to retire before the end of the planned route. Kohl was very kind in seeing to her safe return to the van. In addition, individuals with snow machines belonging to an unrelated tour were willing and able to help her. I really appreciate that! The photos I attached don't begin to show the power and majestic beauty of this glacier. The day was overcast which, while enhancing the blues present in the ice, didn't allow full justice. One last tip: Make sure your boots are rated for super cold conditions and absolutely leak-free. I have boots certified for these, but a previously unidentified pinhole in my right boot resulted in a wet and very uncomfortable foot by the end of the trip. I need to contact the manufacturer about this. In summary: I highly recommend this excursion, and I thank Michelle and Kohl for their kindness, experience, and now their friendship. I hope to catch up with them again during our next trip to Anchorage. Read more Written February 2, 2024
  • marvina1216 0 contributions Matanuska Glacier Walk We went on the Matanuska Glacier Tour. Kayla and Laura were amazing tour guides, and they were both entertaining and knowledgeable! At a few places there were different route options (for people who didn’t wish to squeeze through tight spaces, for example), opportunities to touch glacier ice, and plenty of beautiful views. Lunch afterwards was delicious, and we even spotted some moose on the way home! Read more Written January 28, 2024
  • LarkintheMorning 0 contributions Searching for the elusive Northern Lights plus other great adventures Awesome trip put together by Salmon Berry. Our guide Harrison was amazing. He was great at conveying his encyclopedic knowledge of the area and the scientific aspects of Aurora viewing. I enjoyed all aspects of the trip, especially dog mushing and finally seeing the Aurora on our last night. We were unable to take the train because of track damage between Talkeetna and Fairbanks, so we jumped in the tour bus with Harrison and he drove us. Wonderful customer service! • drunkphotography 0 contributions Go with the locals or don't get vocal! Even though people can arrange many of the things I did in Alaska, for themselves, I ask, “why would/should you?” I always ask Salmon Berry to organize my trips to Alaska because I’m going to different areas in Alaska, doing different things, each time and don’t know anything about what is in each area. I just tell them what I want to do, and they place me where I need to be, and or tell me how to get to where I need to be, just that simple. I was in 3 different cities/towns there, last week, and came back to Anchorage on the Aurora train from Fairbanks, and all the logistics were handled by Salmon Berry, including where I would stay in each location. I don’t have to overthink anything, I don’t have to call 100 different people in Alaska, I just organize through them and use their business connections to get the best experiences and to ensure I get reserved spots so that I’m not shut out of activities. They provide excellent local knowledge of things I wouldn’t even begin to think of. Some of the local companies they connect you to will shuffle things around for you, to ensure you get into activities, whereas, if I tried to reserve the same activities myself, I’d not get the spot and the activities would be sold out. This happened a few times, before I started using them, and I couldn’t get a helicopter ride and couldn’t do snowmobiling, as a solo traveler. I didn’t have these problems after utilizing Salmon Berry and their connections, which is why I stay with them. Also, I met many fellow travelers whose self-created itineraries were complete messes, they were in hotels where they had to drive to go eat. They rented cars but then later didn’t want to go to drive in that crazy winter Alaska weather, nor did they wish to tackle as many things as I did, after all of that driving, and they stayed in the hotels most days, instead. They came to my hotel to hang out and eat near me. They tried to do so much themselves and ultimately didn’t even do half of what they said they wanted to do and gave up. Salmon Berry can arrange all of this for you, and all you have to do is show up on time to be picked up, then you can quiz the drivers for their extra local insight on what to do where you go and then also use their connects. Salmon Berry will also book private tours or connect you with more intimate settings for things (e.g., the aurora tours), which I’d rather do with locals at their private locations, in smaller, isolated venues, than where others told me they tried to arrange the aurora viewings, huddled up shoulder-to-should with 100 strangers that got off of 10 illegal tour busses in a public park. That’s not my idea of a good time, glad I avoided that, entirely. If think you’re going to save money by not using them, you’re not really going to save as much money as you think. I did over 10 days out there and had many things schedule daily, sometimes 2 things a day. Read more Written January 8, 2024
  • 177myt 0 contributions First time in Fairbanks AK! Going to Fairbanks for the first time and this company really made us feel secure. Prior to the trip my ohana kept calling and emailing lots of questions. They gave us a thorough detailed explanation on what we needed to bring. During the trip, we kept calling and they were always available! Thank you SalmonBerry Tours for the guide tours. • curtisrU2863KW 0 contributions Alaskan Winter Wonderland Awesome experience witnessing Aurora Borealis dancing directly overhead. Harrison is a knowledgeable and entertaining guide who kept everyone engaged, informed, and on schedule. Dog sledding in Talkeetna, riding the Alaska Railway, a Chena Hot Springs soak, and great food at every stop round out a complete winter experience. Their gear rental service fit our needs (and bodies) perfectly. These folks know Alaska, know what they're doing, and the Northern Lights Getaway is more than worth the price. Highly recommended! • PsychSP 0 contributions 6-day Northern Lights tour was amazing--don't be afraid of the cold!! My wife and I just got back from Salmonberry's 6 day Northern Lights tour (starting in Anchorage and ending in Fairbanks), and it was fantastic!! Everything was extremely well organized and planned (and on time), the food was delicious, the clothing we rented from them (highly recommend!) was really warm (even in -20 degrees), and our guide, Harrison, was A++ (super smart, friendly, knowledgeable, fun to hang out with, super safe driver, etc.). Although we took this trip primarily to see the Northern Lights (which we saw on our first night of three tries), it was so much more than that--we loved getting to drive the dog sled at Dallas Seavy's place (many places will let you ride but not drive) and meet the husky puppies, Chena hot springs was super fun, eating dinner at the home of locals in their "dry cabin" was very special, and even on night when we didn't see Aurora, Harrison had other fun surprised planned (I won't spoil it for others) and took us on a fun night-hike in the woods. I'm a picky traveler, and everything exceeded my standards, which is saying something! Also, this would be the kind of trip that's difficult to plan on your own (and especially you wouldn't want to try to rent a car and drive these roads), and the value for the money we paid was excellent. I highly recommend Salmonberry tours!!! And Harrison!! Read more Written December 14, 2023

Our guide was very informative & made the experience very enjoyable. Even though it was a wet & cold day we were lucky to see all animals other than the Fox! • ashleycD9908EX 0 contributions Fantastic way to travel from Anchorage to the cruise port in Seward for an Alaskan Cruise! This review is for the "Cruise Ship Tour and Transfer: Anchorage to Seward". We bought last minute tickets to travel on a 7 day Celebrity cruise from Seward but flew into Anchorage. After reviewing a number of more direct methods (train or very big bus) that took between 2-3.5 hours, it felt like it would be bigger to take a little longer and do a tour from Anchorage to Seward. And when searching, I was looking for a way to maximize the travel from Anchorage plus do it in a smaller group. Salmon Berry travel was an absolute WIN! The local young lady that picked us up from our hotel in downtown Anchorage was both a great driver PLUS an entertaining and informative tour guide. We were joined by 2 other groups and had a lovely almost 9 hour trip from hotel door to hotel door. The stops were well spaced out and we never felt rushed. I also felt like our tour guide was accommodating to the desires of the group which was fantastic (and only easy due to the small group format). I have no doubt that any tour one takes with Salmon Berry will be well worth it! Read more Written November 27, 2023

And Transportation was clean and even offered us with complimentary Water and Snacks. Once on our way to Glacier they fed us with all the information of absolutely beautiful nature we were seeing and no time to feel bored during 2 hours drive from Anchorage. • KAlbin 0 contributions Amazing Glacier Walk Kohl and Patty were our guides on the Matanuska Glacier Tour. We were not sure what to expect as this was arranged by a travel agent. It was AMAZING! Our guides were very knowledgeable and filled us with Alaska knowledge on the 1.5 hour trip to the glacier. They picked us up at the hotel, provided us everything we needed for safety on our trek, and then fed us a delicious meal at a local lodge after the hike. I am far from the fit or adventurous type, so I was more than a little apprehensive to attempt this activity. I was able to do it and enjoy it fully. Read more Written October 16, 2023

Some cruise lines even kick off their sales in December, so it's advisable to begin your search for discounted pricing early.

Below, we've included some of the best Alaska cruise deals available right now for sailings in 2024 and 2025. All quoted prices are per person for double occupancy and were accurate at the time of writing. In Ketchikan, reserve a spot for the Alaskan Cultural & Lumberjack Show Experience, which includes an entertaining show, a chance to learn about Alaska Native culture, and a tasting of local food and wines. Guests will also have two sea days to enjoy activities and dining experiences on the ship.

How to find the best Alaska cruise deals

Book during wave season.

As previously mentioned, you can take advantage of some of the best deals of the year during wave season. Promotions offered during wave season include lower cruise fares, reduced deposits and onboard credits. You can also find special rates (or free fares) for the third and fourth guests in the same room, making this the perfect time to book a family cruise.

In addition, look for discounts on higher-level staterooms and suites, or even accommodations in exclusive areas of the ship, such as The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line or The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. These private spaces offer swanky extras like luxurious accommodations, all-inclusive pricing , butler service, a team of attendants and concierge service, as well as private restaurants, lounges and pools. With lower pricing, wave season may be the best time to splurge on a cruise vacation in one of these upscale enclaves.

Promotional pricing beyond wave season

If you miss booking your cruise during wave season, don't panic. Many lines offer special pricing and flash sales throughout the year and advertise lower fares for voyages during Alaska's shoulder seasons, which fall in May and September.

"You will always find the more affordable Alaska cruises toward the beginning and end of the season. This year, the Alaska cruise season begins in April and continues through October," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic. She adds, "The challenge with shoulder season Alaska cruises is that the weather might not be the best – it can snow in Alaska in April and early May – and in the fall, the nights will be longer (although, there is a chance you might see northern lights )."

In addition to giving up the warmer summer weather (and possibly having snow), you may also miss some optimal wildlife viewing opportunities if you cruise early or late in the season. For example, the peak time for bear-watching excursions extends from mid-June to mid-August, which falls during the height of the Alaska cruise season in July and August.

If you're looking for other ways to save money on your cruise, Gray Faust advises that older ships also provide more value when you're looking for deals.

It's important to note that a few of this year's wave deals extend just until the end of February 2024, so you'll need to refer to the individual cruise line websites to see the exact dates for the special offers. You may also be able to find lower prices on some discount and aggregator sites, like Cruise Critic, Cruises.com and Priceline.

From weather patterns to seasonal activities, I’ll share personal recommendations and insights on when to visit the Last Frontier. Together, we’ll ensure your Alaska getaway is nothing short of extraordinary.

When is the Best Time to Visit Alaska?

Many would agree that the golden window falls between late May and mid-September. During these sun-kissed months, you can expect temperatures ranging from the pleasant 50s to the mild 70s, an astonishing 16 to 24 hours of daylight, and the scenery is at its most vibrant.

Finding the best time to visit isn’t just about the weather! While the prime months of May to September offer the advantage of milder conditions, you shouldn’t overlook the shoulder months of April and October in Alaska .

Fewer crowds and notable cost savings might just tip the scales for you. Think about what you REALLY want from your Alaskan adventure!

Are you a sun-worshipper who shivers at the thought of cold? Can’t stand mosquitoes but adore a snowy landscape? Dreaming of the northern lights or the midnight sun? Your preferences will definitely shape your trip!

Whether it’s the unique experience of winter with sled dog rides and aurora viewing or the endless summer days under the land of the midnight sun, Alaska’s diverse seasons have something extraordinary to offer.

Let’s dive into the details to help you pinpoint your perfect time to explore the Last Frontier!

The main tourist season in Alaska is from May 15th to September 15th. This is when most seasonal businesses will be open.

Visiting Alaska in the Summer

Ah, summer in Alaska – it’s a magical time that draws visitors from around the globe! Picture yourself basking in warmer weather, surrounded by the vibrant beauty of nature.

This season is perfect for those who thirst for adventure, offering hiking, fishing, boating, whale watching , and kayaking.

But, summer’s true magic is the land of the midnight sun. Imagine a golden sun that never sets, illuminating the sky for up to 24 hours during the summer solstice. It’s an experience unique to Alaska, and one that must be seen to be believed.

As locals, we can weed our gardens at midnight, or start a long hike after dinner. It’s incredible. The extra light brings on unusual bursts of energy and the desire to stay up until the wee hours.

Yet, it’s not all sunshine and clear skies. Summer is also the season for wildfires. While they are a natural occurrence, they can sometimes lead to smoky conditions and poor air quality.

Some years are worse than others, but don’t let that deter you. With a little planning and awareness, summer in Alaska can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Summer in Alaska isn’t just about outdoor pursuits; it’s a feast for the senses, literally! Seafood enthusiasts, prepare to be dazzled by the abundance of fresh, locally sourced salmon, halibut, and other fish.

Dining al fresco by a sparkling fjord with a plate of just-caught delicacies? It’s a seafood lover’s dream come true. But there’s more! Alaska’s summer also hums with cultural vibrancy.

Whether it’s grooving to local tunes at music festivals, admiring native art at shows, or partaking in cultural celebrations, there’s no shortage of ways to immerse yourself in the rich Alaskan heritage.

These experiences offer visitors a chance to learn about Alaska’s history and culture while enjoying local food, music, and art.

Summer in Alaska is a mosaic of experiences, each more enchanting than the last. Come for the midnight sun, stay for the flavors and festivities

1. Alaska in June

June in Alaska is often lauded as the optimal month to explore the Last Frontier and for good reason! With the weather at its mildest and days stretching on seemingly forever, the adventures are endless.

Fancy a ferry ride from Whittier to Valdez ? June’s tendency for amazing weather offers the perfect opportunity for a journey across the pristine waters. Your choices for activities in Valdez are vast, from kayak tours to cruises to view the imposing Columbia Glacier.

And don’t miss a visit to McCarthy ; early summer in these spots is simply unforgettable and they are some of my favorite places to visit this time of year.

  • Weather : The end of June is considered the peak of summer in Alaska. The weather is mild, and the days are long, making it perfect for outdoor activities. It’s a great time for a helicopter tour in Anchorage with a visit to a glacier!
  • Wildlife viewing: June is also an excellent time for wildlife viewing opportunities. With the warmer weather, animals are more active and easier to spot. A great spot to see brown bears at this time is Katmai National Park. Alternatively, hop on a bus for the Tundra Wilderness Tour in Denali National Park!
  • Festivals and events : June is a popular month for festivals and events, such as the Midnight Sun Festival in Fairbanks and the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay in Haines . I highly recommend heading to Fairbanks at this time because the vibe is super fun!
  • Scenery: The scenery in Alaska is simply breathtaking, and June is an excellent time to enjoy it. The mountains are still snow-capped, and the wildflowers are in full bloom. Green-up happens REALLY fast between May and June due to the long daylight hours! Go for a hike or plan for a camping trip for a memorable trip.
  • Crowds: Mid-June is the peak tourist season in Alaska, and it can get crowded in popular tourist areas, such as Denali National Park and Anchorage.
  • Higher prices: With the increased demand, prices for accommodation, tours, and activities may be higher than at other times of the year and they may sell out faster. Book well in advance!
  • Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes in Alaska can be problematic, especially in June. In fact, they can really ruin a backcountry trip. Bring insect repellent if they come out in swarms when you visit and wear long sleeves and pants to avoid getting bitten.
  • Weather : While the weather is generally pleasant in June, it can still be unpredictable and downright COLD some years. Be prepared for rain and cooler temperatures, just in case. I always recommend packing rain pants, too, if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors.

2. Alaska in July

July is a wonderful month to visit Alaska, where the sun rarely dips below the horizon!

It’s the heart of summer, and cities like Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau bask in up to 22 hours of daylight. This natural phenomenon amplifies the joy of outdoor activities.

The Kenai Peninsula becomes a hotspot for fishing enthusiasts chasing salmon , while Denali National Park offers clear views of North America’s tallest peak. Explore the art galleries in Homer, join the Gold Rush Days in Nome, or take part in the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics in Fairbanks .

In Seward, the Mount Marathon Race on July 4th is a thrilling event for both participants and spectators. From hiking and whale watching in Juneau to enjoying local festivals, July in Alaska is packed with unique experiences, all under the extended glow of the midnight sun.

  • Weather: July tends to be the hottest month in Alaska (but this is not guaranteed—it can turn cold too), and the days are still long, making it perfect for outdoor activities such as backpacking and camping in places such as McCarthy or other National Parks.
  • Wildlife viewing : July is an excellent time for wildlife viewing, with animals being more active and visible. Moose abound and if you are lucky you might see a lynx or Dall sheep when driving in more remote locations. I will never forget the lynx I saw when driving on the McCarthy Road !
  • Festivals and events : July is a popular month for festivals and events, such as the Alaska State Fair in Palmer and the Sitka Music Festival . The 4th of July is always fun in Alaska, too.
  • Scenery: The Alaskan wildflowers are out of this world in July! Fireweed, Mountain Aven, Alaska Cotton, Pink Plumes, and SO much more make the landscape quite colorful.
  • Crowds : July is also peak tourist season in Alaska, understandably, as it is the warmest time to visit. It is definitely more crowded if you choose to do a land tour or an inside passage cruise.
  • Higher prices: With the increased demand, prices for accommodation, tours, and activities may be higher than at other times of the year.
  • Mosquitoes : Alaska mosquitoes can still be a problem in EARLY July. Bring insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants to avoid getting bitten.
  • Weather: While July is generally a warm and dry month, weather conditions can vary widely in Alaska, and it’s not uncommon to experience rain, fog, and cooler temperatures even in the height of summer. Be prepared for rain by packing a light raincoat, rain pants, and a warm fleece.

3. Alaska in August

August is a month of transition in Alaska, as the long days of summer start to give way to the cooler, shorter days of fall. It’s my personal favorite time of year in Alaska, leading into September.

During this month, wild blueberries ripen in the interior of the state, while lingonberries reach their peak on the Kenai Peninsula.

Across Alaska, it’s a time of gathering and preparation for winter, and if you’re fortunate enough to befriend the locals, they might share their secret berry-picking spots. I’ll confess, we had our guarded spots in Fairbanks!

This month also tends to mark the start of the Alaska rainy season, which can turn bitter cold toward the end of the month, especially in regions like Fairbanks and Anchorage.

Termination dust, the first snowfall of the season, is typically observed in Alaska during the second half of August, appearing first on the mountaintops around Denali National Park and the Chugach Mountains. This signals the start of winter and the end of warm weather activities.

With fall colors beginning to emerge, wildlife preparing for winter, and unique weather patterns, the second half of August is definitely more FALL than summer in Alaska. It offers a blend of summer’s bounty and autumn’s anticipation, making it a distinctive time to explore the Last Frontier.

  • Mild Weather: August typically offers mild, comfortably cool weather in Alaska, perfect for outdoor explorations. Just remember to pack your rain gear.
  • Fall colors : Towards the end of August, birch and poplar trees as well as the tundra start to change colors. Let me tell you, this is a gorgeous thing to experience. The ground glows in the low sunlight as well as the yellow leaves on the trees!
  • Fewer crowds : August falls in the shoulder season, providing the opportunity to enjoy popular destinations like Denali National Park and Kenai Fjords National Park without the summer crowds. It’s a great time for a Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise !
  • Whale watching : August is a prime time to observe humpback whales, orcas, and other marine mammals. Consider booking a whale watching tour in Juneau , it is one of the highlights of the Alaskan summer.
  • Shorter Daylight Hours: While August still offers plenty of sunlight, the daylight hours begin to wane compared to the earlier summer months, subtly heralding the approach of fall.
  • Wildlife Viewing Challenges: Although encounters with lynx, moose, and bears are possible in August, the changing season may affect their behavior and patterns, potentially making sightings less predictable.
  • Fewer Tour and Activity Options: As the month progresses towards shoulder season, some, but not all, tour operators may reduce their schedules, leading to fewer options for excursions and adventures.
  • Chilly, Plentiful Rain: Rain in August is not uncommon in Alaska, and it can be cold, damp, and abundant. The unpredictable weather demands preparedness; be sure to pack waterproof gear to stay comfortable and dry during your travels.

Visiting Alaska in the Fall

As someone who adores the cooler weather in autumn, wherever I live, my recommendation would be to consider visiting Alaska during the fall season when the state is transformed into a breathtaking wonderland. It’s also still a great time for National Park tours!

Fall in Alaska is a visual feast, with the tundra turning deep shades of red and magenta, offset by the contrast of bright yellow leaves and lush green cranberry foliage.

It’s a season that captures my heart, with its vivid landscape and crisp air, and I know others will feel the same.

This time of year invites visitors to explore Alaska’s national parks and reserves with fewer crowds, no mosquitoes, and striking tundra displays. Plus, the mild temperatures, compared to the often harsh winter months, make fall a pleasant in-between season.

It’s an ideal time to discover the state without the need for heavy layers, but with all the wonder and beauty that Alaska is famous for.

4. Alaska in September

The first two weeks in September are the BEST! If you don’t mind some chilly and unpredictable weather and are looking for a quieter, more peaceful experience, September can be a great time to visit Alaska.

Visit Anchorage and Fairbanks for the mesmerizing Northern Lights , or explore the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park’s landscapes, now painted with fall colors.

Berry pickers can rejoice in the Kenai Peninsula’s wild harvest, while Homer’s Artists Studio Tour attracts art enthusiasts until mid-month.

September’s cooler weather in Alaska doesn’t deter adventurers; in fact, it offers unique opportunities. Denali’s breathtaking views and wildlife bus tours become particularly magical.

I once had the most incredible wildlife experience in September during one of these tours! Grizzlies, moose, dall sheep, eagles, and even a wolf family with pups right on the road were among the unforgettable sights!

With harvest festivals, glacier cruises , and opportunities for wildlife photography, this month in Alaska provides a peaceful and unmatched connection with nature’s charm.

  • Fall colors : In September, Alaska’s poplar and birch trees start to turn brilliant shades of yellow providing a spectacular backdrop for outdoor activities and scenic drives.
  • Wildlife viewing : September is an excellent time for wildlife viewing in Alaska. Bears, moose, and caribou are actively preparing for the winter season, and visitors may be able to spot them foraging and gathering food. This is a good month to visit polar bears in northernmost Alaska !
  • Fewer crowds : September is considered the shoulder season in Alaska, which means there are generally fewer visitors and fewer crowds at popular attractions.
  • Northern Lights : The aurora borealis, or northern lights, become more visible in Alaska in September due to the longer nights and darker skies. I had my first ever breathtaking view of the spectacular northern lights my first September in Alaska, and it was truly an unforgettable experience.
  • Weather: The weather in Alaska can be unpredictable, especially in September. Visitors may encounter cold temperatures, rain, or even snow during their trip. It will usually dust snow by the end of September in Fairbanks, for example.
  • Limited services : Many businesses and attractions in Alaska close for the season in September, so visitors may find that there are limited services and activities available. This is not a problem if you plan ahead and are more self-sufficient.
  • Reduced daylight : As the month progresses, the days become shorter and shorter, which may limit the amount of time visitors have for outdoor activities.

5. Alaska in October

October in Alaska is a mix of climates and experiences. In the interior regions like Fairbanks, ice and challenging road conditions appear, calling for careful planning.

However, in southern areas such as the Kenai Peninsula and Juneau, milder weather may prevail, offering opportunities for late-season hiking and wildlife spotting.

The onset of the northern lights becomes a highlight across the state, especially in more northern locations. It’s a great time of year to see the aurora in Fairbanks !

Visitors must be aware of reduced services, but the month’s unique combination of fall colors and emerging winter wonders can provide an unforgettable experience, both in Alaska’s colder heartland and its more temperate southern locales.

  • Fall Colors : Similar to September, October offers beautiful fall colors as the leaves of Alaska’s trees continue to change color and provide a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities.
  • Northern Lights : The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are visible in Alaska in October due to the longer nights and darker skies. It can be a great time for stargazing and experiencing this natural phenomenon.
  • Fewer Crowds : October is considered the shoulder season in Alaska, so you can enjoy the state’s natural beauty and attractions without dealing with the crowds of tourists that visit in the summer months.
  • Wildlife Viewing : Visitors to Alaska in October may still be able to spot bears, moose, and other wildlife preparing for the winter season, providing opportunities for nature photography and observation.
  • Weather : October is often considered a transitional time in Alaska that becomes winter halfway through the month. There are unpredictable weather patterns that can include rain, wind, sleet, and snow. Visitors should be prepared for chilly temperatures and variable weather conditions.
  • Limited Services : Many attractions and services in Alaska begin to shut down in October, which can limit the number of activities and experiences available to visitors.
  • Reduced Daylight : As the month progresses, the days become shorter, and there is less daylight available for outdoor activities.
  • Road Conditions : Typically mid-way through October winter arrives and is there to stay, at least in the interior. It comes on fast at times creating slick, icy conditions so take caution!

Visiting Alaska in the Winter

Visiting Alaska in the winter may seem unconventional, but it’s a season packed with unique and rewarding experiences.

It can be an incredibly beautiful winter wonderland during these months but is also a time of darkness, especially in the interior and far north in the arctic circle where you can take tours from Fairbanks . The shorter days and extreme cold are part of the charm and experience.

Alaska’s snowy months unveil opportunities for outdoor adventures specific to the chilly weather. Whether it’s skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice skating, or even dog sledding, the thrill is unmatched. Plus, the view of the Northern Lights adds a magical touch to the winter nights.

For budget-savvy travelers, winter brings affordability, with lower prices on flights, accommodations, and activities. So why not embrace the cold and explore Alaska’s winter wonderland?

6. Alaska in November

In Alaska, November is winter. It also offers travelers the opportunity to experience the state’s breathtaking natural beauty in a different light.

The stunning landscapes are transformed by the snow, and visitors can witness the Northern Lights dance across the sky.

A favorite spot for Aurora watching is Chena Hot Springs, where visitors can indulge in warm pools under the celestial display. Daytime isn’t to be overlooked either, providing a pleasant respite from the crisp cold with its majestic vistas.

  • Limited access : Winter’s arrival means certain popular spots and national parks may shutter or operate on fixed schedules. Check ahead to avoid disappointment, as some of Alaska’s majestic destinations might be off-limits.

  • Limited Accessibility : Some roads, attractions, and activities may be closed or inaccessible due to winter weather conditions.
  • Higher Costs: December is a popular time to visit Alaska, so prices for flights, accommodation, and activities may be higher than at other times of the year.

Visiting Alaska in January offers a unique winter experience for those prepared for the cold. It’s a great time for skiing in areas like Alyeska Resort or exploring the frozen landscapes on a dog-sledding adventure in Fairbanks.

Northern Lights or Arctic Circle Tours from Fairbanks are a highlight, providing a chance to witness the mesmerizing aurora borealis. Ice fishing on Big Lake is another exciting activity where people can catch char and burbot.

However, January’s chilly weather may not be suitable for everyone, especially those preferring warmer temperatures or having limited mobility.

  • Northern Lights: January is among the best months to see the Aurora Borealis. The dark and clear skies offer optimal viewing conditions for this natural phenomenon.
  • Winter sports: Alaska is a winter wonderland, and January is an excellent time to enjoy skiing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, and other winter sports.
  • Off-season discounts: January is the off-season in Alaska, and you can get discounted rates on flights, accommodations, and tours. You can save money by visiting during this time of the year.

  • Transportation issues: Winter weather conditions can affect transportation, especially if there is snow or ice on the roads. You need to plan your travel accordingly and be prepared for delays or cancellations.

9. Alaska in February

Alaska in February is marked by the welcome return of light, a shift often celebrated around Valentine’s Day. It’s a time when days start to feel ‘normal’ again, no longer enveloped in pitch darkness.

For those seeking winter activities and fewer crowds, February is an excellent time to visit. Whether it’s joining the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, skiing in popular resorts, or taking advantage of quiet trails for snowmobiling, this month offers a blend of winter charm and increasing daylight.

If you’re a fan of winter festivals, don’t miss the Fur Rondy (Fur Rendezvous) in Anchorage, a tradition since 1935. This festival is a lively blend of events, including sled dog races, a carnival, and quirky contests, showcasing Alaskan culture and winter joy.

10. Alaska in March

March in Alaska continues to be a winter month, especially in the interior where the cold can be quite severe. Temperatures can plummet to 45 to 50 below zero Fahrenheit, sometimes persisting for two-week stretches!

Yet, the return of the light and the longer days combined with the stunning snowy landscapes make this a unique time to visit. In my opinion, it’s one of the best months to visit for the northern lights!

I remember the year my husband and his friends began a ski trip in the Alaska Range, starting their 12-day journey in windy -45 F weather, it was an intense experience for them.

There was the time I tried to fill our water jugs at the Water Wagon in Fairbanks one March evening. I accidentally engaged the pump too soon, causing the water to freeze instantly making a big mess all over the side of my car. It was an alarming surprise, showing just how extreme and dangerous the Alaskan weather can be!

  • Sunshine : March reminds us of the approach of spring in Alaska, bringing dazzling sunlight that transforms the snowy landscapes into a glittering spectacle. It’s an incredible sight that must be experienced!
  • Longer Days: The expanding daylight allows for extended exploration and outdoor adventures. Imagine taking a helicopter tour in Juneau , landing on a glacier, and then hiking through the frozen wonderland—all under the rejuvenating rays of the Alaskan sun! • Winter Sports: March continues to offer fabulous winter sports opportunities like skiing and snowmobiling, with the bonus of longer, sunlit days, enhancing your enjoyment on the slopes or trails.
  • Wildlife Viewing: As the snow melts at the end of the month, animals like moose, bears, and caribou begin to emerge from their winter habitats, making it a great time for wildlife watching.

Visiting Alaska in the Spring

Springtime in Alaska is a time of renewal and transformation, as the long winter months give way to warmer temperatures, longer days, and the first signs of new growth.

As the snow begins to melt and the ice recedes from lakes and rivers, Alaska comes alive with a host of outdoor activities and natural wonders that are sure to delight visitors from all over.

One of the highlights of spring in Alaska is the opportunity to witness the annual migration of birds and other wildlife as they return from their winter habitats in warmer climates.

From bald eagles and sandhill cranes to whales and sea lions, there’s no shortage of fascinating creatures to observe as they make their way back north.

Of course, spring in Alaska can also bring unpredictable weather patterns – so it’s important to come prepared with plenty of warm layers, waterproof gear, and other essentials.

But with a little bit of planning and some flexibility, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience exploring this incredible state during one of its most beautiful seasons.

11. Alaska in April

April in Alaska is a captivating blend of bright, sunny, melty, icy, muddy, snowy, and downright unpredictable! The smell of spring fills the air, teasing you with promises of warmer days.

But don’t be fooled; April can still surprise you with a two-foot snow dump. It’s not a month that tops the travel charts, despite the sun and melting snow. Why? Well, it’s brown and muddy—a bit too muddy for most.

Now, let’s get one thing straight: April is MUD SEASON, both in Alaska and my home in Vermont . It’s as real and as messy as it gets, a time when the land is caught between winter’s chill and summer’s bloom.

It’s not for the faint of heart, but for the adventurous soul, April in Alaska holds a certain rugged charm!

  • Northern Lights : Early April is a great time to see the Northern Lights in Alaska, as the nights are still long enough and the skies are clear.
  • Lower Prices : Traveling to Alaska in April is generally less expensive than during the peak tourist season in the summer. You may be able to find deals on flights, lodging, and tours.
  • Fewer Crowds : Because April is still considered the offseason, you may encounter fewer crowds and have more space to enjoy Alaska’s natural beauty.
  • Wildlife: Spring is a great time to see Alaska’s wildlife , as animals such as bears, moose, and caribou are starting to emerge from hibernation and look for food.
  • Weather: The weather in Alaska in April can be unpredictable and change rapidly. You should expect cold temperatures, snow, and possible rain or sleet OR hot and sunny! The unpleasant surprises could impact your ability to explore the outdoors and enjoy activities.
  • Limited Activities : Some activities and attractions may be closed or unavailable in April due to the off-season, including some national parks and visitor centers.
  • Mud Season: Some roads may be really tricky due to mud season and potential fading winter conditions, limiting your ability to travel to certain areas.
  • Daylight Hours: While the Northern Lights can be spectacular, the shorter daylight hours could limit the amount of time you have to explore and enjoy Alaska’s outdoor activities.

12. Alaska in May

May is a time of growth and green-up in Alaska! While it isn’t the warmest month in Alaska it is an uplifting one.

The buds peek out on the trees and seems as though you just blink and then all the leaves out in full glory. It is a very cheery time for Alaskans because the days are longer and the sun is high in the sky.

It is also a busy time for Alaskans because folks put their heads down to start focusing on projects outside their home such as chopping wood, clearing brush, prepping their garden, and more.

This means it is a great time for budget-conscious tourists to visit who don’t care for summer crowds because it is less expensive, the snow is mostly melted, and the bugs aren’t out yet.

  • Longer Days : In May, the days are getting longer and the weather is usually milder than in April. This means you’ll have more time to explore the outdoors and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and fishing.
  • Wildlife: This is the best time to visit Alaska for wildlife viewing opportunities as many animals are starting to come out of hibernation and are active again. You may be able to spot bears, moose, caribou, and other animals.
  • Wildflowers : Springtime in Alaska brings the start of wildflowers that begin to bloom across the state, providing a beautiful backdrop for outdoor activities and photography.
  • Fewer Crowds: May is still considered the offseason, so you may encounter fewer crowds and have more space to enjoy Alaska’s natural beauty.
  • Weather: While the weather is generally milder in May than in April, it can still be unpredictable and change rapidly. You should still expect cold temperatures, rain, and possible snow, particularly in the earlier part of the month.
  • Limited Activities: Some activities and attractions may still be closed or limited in EARLY May due to the offseason, including some national parks’ visitor centers.
  • Black Flies : As the weather gets warmer, black flies become more active in Alaska. This can make outdoor activities uncomfortable if you’re not prepared with appropriate clothing and repellent.
  • High Water Levels : The spring thaw can cause high water levels in rivers and lakes, making some water-based activities unsafe or impossible.

Alaska Temperature by Month

Alaska’s weather varies widely due to its size . It is such a humungous state so I am going to provide average temperatures for two parts of the state. That way you can use the info to plan your travel for the best time to go to Alaska for your own preferences.

Average Weather Year Round in Fairbanks, Alaska

The interior of Alaska experiences a subarctic climate, with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. Despite the averages, it is important to remember Fairbanks experiences a very wide range of temperatures, with its winters dropping to lows of -40 degrees Fahrenheit or below and its summers reaching highs in the 80s Fahrenheit.

Here are the average temperatures by month in the city of Fairbanks, located in the heart of the interior:

It’s worth noting that temperatures in the interior can vary widely depending on factors such as elevation, proximity to water or mountains, and weather patterns.

However, these averages should give you a general idea of what to expect if you are planning a trip to this part of Alaska.

Average Weather Year Round in Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and has a subarctic climate with cool summers and cold winters. Here are the average temperatures by month in Anchorage:

Keep in mind that temperatures in Anchorage can also be influenced by various factors such as elevation, proximity to water or mountains, and weather patterns, which definitely bring significant variations.

FAQS: Best Time to Visit Alaska

There are a lot of questions that arise when someone is planning a visit to Alaska for the very first time! Here are some thoughtful answers to things you may be wondering about.

What is the best month to go to Alaska?

July tends to be the warmest time to go to Alaska and visitors have access to all the tours and activities as it is the height of the tourist season. However, as we all know, we cannot predict what Mother Nature will send us for weather, even in July.

There have been times in July when I can recall that it was wet and cold enough to wear a fleece camping at our cabin in McCarthy, Alaska . The interior of Alaska tends to be warmer and hotter in July.

What is the cheapest time to visit Alaska?

The cheapest time to visit Alaska is typically during the shoulder seasons of late April to early May and late September to mid-October. During these times, you can often find great deals on flights, accommodations, and tours as tourist traffic slow down before or after the peak summer season.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that visiting Alaska during the shoulder seasons also means dealing with potentially colder (and maybe unpleasant) weather and fewer daylight hours (in October). Additionally, some attractions may be closed or have limited hours during this time.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option but still want to experience Alaska at its best, consider planning your trip for late May or Late August. These months offer a good balance of warm weather, longer days, and lower prices compared to the peak summer season in June and July.

What is the most expensive month to go to Alaska?

The most expensive month to go to Alaska typically depends on the type of travel and activities you are interested in. Generally, the peak tourist season in Alaska is during the summer months, from mid-June to mid-August, when the weather is the warmest and the days are the longest.

During this period, prices for flights, accommodations, and tours tend to be higher due to the high demand.

What month is best to see northern lights in Alaska?

The best time to visit Alaska to see northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, is from late August to early April , with the best viewing opportunities in the winter months. If you don’t care for the harsher winter temperatures then September is the best month to try to view the northern lights.

If they come out for you it will be an amazing memory! Otherwise, February and March are the ideal months to view the lights !

They can be seen across much of Alaska, with some of the best viewing spots being Fairbanks and the Arctic Circle. For those looking for a real adventure, there are some excellent guided tours to the Arctic Circle from Fairbanks , as well as Fairbanks Northern Lights tours .

When is the best time to go on a cruise in Alaska?

The optimal period to enjoy an Alaskan cruise is between May and September, as most vessels operate during this time – when the ice has melted, and whales have migrated from their southern breeding grounds.

While July and August are the peak months for cruising, travelers seeking a more tranquil voyage should consider scheduling their trip for early June or late August. Consider choosing a small ship to maximize your experience while being environmentally responsible and respectful to local communities.

When is it summer in Alaska?

Alaska summer is short, really short. June and July until mid-August are truly the summer months in Alaska but they can still bring cold damp weather depending on the year. If you want your best shot at summer weather visit the last week of June or the first week of July.

How many days do you need in Alaska?

The number of days needed to enjoy Alaska depends on the type of activities you want to do and the places you want to visit! Alaska is a huge state with a wide variety of attractions. The duration of your trip will depend on your interests, budget, and travel style.

If you want to see some of the highlights of Alaska, an 8-day trip could be sufficient. During this time, you could start in Anchorage, take a glacier cruise , drive to Valdez (or ferry in Prince William Sound!), then head to Denali National Park, and enjoy some outdoor activities such as hiking or fishing near Fairbanks.

However, if you have more time and want to explore the backcountry in some of the more remote areas, such as McCarthy, in Wrangell St-Elias National Park, and participate in multi-day expeditions, you may want to plan a trip for two weeks or more.

When is the worst time to visit Alaska?

The worst time to visit Alaska is in the mud season before trees have leafed out, Late-April to Mid-May. Everything is gray and mucky. Also, the winter months between November and January can also be the least favorable time to visit due to the harsh weather conditions combined with very daylight hours.

When is the best time to see whales in Alaska?

The best time to visit Alaska to see whales is generally from mid-May to mid-September. During this period, humpback and orca whales migrate to Alaska’s coastal waters to feed on the abundant supply of fish and plankton.

The peak season for whale watching in Alaska is typically from mid-June to mid-July, when the weather is usually mild and the seas are calm. However, whale sightings are possible throughout the summer months.

It’s worth noting that the exact timing of the whale migration can vary from year to year, so it’s always a good idea to check with local tour operators or wildlife experts to get the most up-to-date information.

When should I plan a trip to Alaska?

You should plan your first trip to Alaska in June. Generally, the peak tourist season in Alaska is during the summer months, from mid-June to mid-August, when the weather is the warmest and the days are the longest. During this time, you can enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

Best Time to Visit Alaska for Small-Ship Cruises:

July and August are the best months for enjoying an Inside Passage Alaska cruise, although, folks tend to cruise Alaska anytime between April and October. The same months are also recommended for taking the Alaska railroad!

Best Time to Visit Alaska National Parks :

The best time to visit Denali National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park , and Gates of the Arctic is summer until early September.

If planning a trip to explore the Tongass National Forest, where rain and cool temperatures are likely most of the year, April and May tend to be the driest months for your travels.

Likewise, April, May, and June are usually the driest months of the year in Glacier Bay National Park.

Best Time to Visit Alaska for the Northern Lights:

You will want to plan your trip in September or during the winter months, from December to March. During part of this period, Alaska experiences long nights and short days, but it also offers stunning views of the Aurora Borealis.

The Bottom Line: Best Time of Year to Visit Alaska

Visit Alaska in the summer between June and September for the best weather and more activities!

While Alaska is an incredible destination that offers something for everyone no matter what time of year you visit, summer is the best time to enjoy activities without worrying about cold weather!

There’s never a bad time to experience all that this beautiful state has to offer but summer is the most popular time to visit and with good reason.

With a little bit of preparation and some careful consideration, you can ensure that your trip to Alaska is one that you’ll remember for years to come.
