Silca Viaggio Travel Pump: Quick Review

Silca Viaggio Travel Pump: Quick Review – by Grannygear

When I was at Sea Otter I was shown the Silca Viaggio Travel floor pump.  Designed for travel use and enclosed in a canvas bag that also could be used as a tool storage roll, the Viaggio is a thing of beauty.  Machined out of aluminum for the most part and then polished, it looks and feels ‘significant’.

Also significant was the price at $275.00 USD.  I took some pics for the Sea Otter article and that was that. Or so I thought. Then, quite out of the blue, a package from Silca showed up at the door.  It was a rather long tube containing a Viaggio, bag and all. Well, hello there beautiful! Ciao!

Since then I have been taking it with me on road trips, using it in the garage, and seeing how it all worked across multiple types of bikes from road to Plus MTB.  Here is what I have found, but first, a few words from the Silca website :

What is it?

A highly refined collapsible floor pump with a Bluetooth® enabled pressure gauge accurate to 1% along with SILCA’s award-winning HIRO chuck. The pump folds down into a waxed-canvas tool roll for easy transport.

Who’s it for?

The uncompromising cyclist seeking a highly portable and packable floor pump that desires the volume, efficiency and accuracy of a full-sized SILCA floor pump .

Where is the gauge?” Those words were spoken by Mrs. Grannygear when I was unpacking it in the living room.  Well, basically she was holding it in her hands as she happened to be doing some calendar work on her smart phone.  Yes, there is no external gauge on the Viaggio as it uses an app driven by Bluetooth to inform you of the PSI/Bar levels in the tire.

I have to admit I was less than enthused about that part.  Really?  I need a phone to see what tire pressure the pump is accomplishing? That seemed to me like those pressure monitoring devices that sit on your valve stems or electronic shocks and shifters for ‘adventure’ bikes. In other words, a needless complication.  More on this later.

Everything I have sampled from Silca has been very well made.  Even the products that have not been a favorite of mine are lovely to look at and beautifully executed.  The ones I have loved, like the Ti water bottle cages and the tire levers, merge form and function at a high level.  The Viaggio is impressively made.  The machined handle that slides into the barrel extrusion with a soft *click*, storing there while capturing the usefully long hose…the magnetic attachment of the HIRO chuck, maybe the best air chuck I have used on a floor pump…the rebuildable nature of the internal parts…yes, it is costly, but it seems built to last and last.

The app is an interesting deal.  It makes sense in this case as it means the pump has no external gauge to increase weight and bulk as well as be damaged in travel.  I can see that being very useful for the Tattico mini pump, something that Guitar Ted tested a bit ago.  I have to say that using the app on my iPhone was simple and effective, allowing me to set my phone darn near across the room and still see what PSI I was getting to.  As well, it is accurate far and above what any analog gauge would offer on a typical floor pump.

In use, once you begin to pump up a tire, the app says hello to your Viaggio and begins to increment the ‘gauge’.  It takes a bit to settle down.  You pump a few strokes and then, after stopping any pumping motion, the readout will give you a solid number in a few seconds.  Simple.  Note that the number will fall quickly if the chuck is leaking at all at the Presta valve.  You can even set the app to pre-set values for individual bikes.  Cool.  I like.

However if this was a standard, non-travel, floor pump I would prefer to have a simple, large scale analog gauge, or even better, a digital type gauge on the pump itself (like the Silca Super Pista Digital Floor Pump has).  That said, for this travel application, having no gauge works.  If the battery, which is a ‘coin’ type, stored in the base of the pump, fails, it is a very common type to source and of course the pump would still work without the battery.  Got thumbs?  I can pump up a tire to satisfaction by ‘feel’ without a gauge of any kind even though I might not be at an optimum pressure.  But the idea that a dead battery or buggy app/phone relationship makes the pump a semi-blind process takes some getting used to.

The Viaggio seems to be on the lower volume/high pressure end of things stroke-wise, so if you were doing fat boy tires all the time, that might take a while.  I found it fine for 40c gravel tires and OK topping up 2.8 Plus MTB tires.  It still beats a mini pump by a long shot and being able to use the flip out legs and base resting on the floor is better than a hand held solution. I took it, wrapped in the roll bag, on a couple road trips where it stored less awkwardly than a fixed base floor pump with gauges. Easier to pack around for sure.

Now then. Is it a satisfying product?  I think so, although I have to admit that I would need to travel a lot to make it worth the inconvenience of unwrapping the bag, inserting that handle into place, opening the app…where did I put my phone?…inflating then undoing the handle and storing it, etc.  I keep an SKS floor pump, one of the inexpensive, indestructible metal ones, in the back of my Subaru Outback all the time.  Yeah, the gauge is tiny and hard to read but it is close enough for my needs on the average ride where I am topping up a tire or fixing a flat.

Still, the Viaggio is compelling.  Expensive, yes, but likely built to last and lovely to look at.  If you are going to put Italian names on things, they should be bellisima , yes?  It does what it claims to do and the HIRO chuck is very nice, making anything I normally use feel like a kid’s toy.

I read an interesting review of the Silca Viaggio Travel Pump written by the “Angry Asian” on another site.  James is perhaps the best reviewer of cycling products I have ever read and he brought out some well formed thoughts on using the Viaggio as a travel pump if you fly with your bike.  He found it heavy and a bit long.  I would have never thought of that, as I seldom fly these days, and pretty much never with a bike.  I think I would use something like the Lezyne Mini Floor Drive combined with an SKS digital pressure gauge for airplane travel.

But for packing in the car or van or RV, the bag is nice, can hold tools and would keep the Viaggio looking fresh.  In a car, the bit of weight and size is not an issue.

It’s not often that I find myself flip-flopping back and forth between really liking something and finding it somewhat inconvenient.  Still, I have to admit that the next time I load up the bikes and point the car towards a cycling road trip I will have the Viaggio tucked in the back, nestled into that nice roll bag.  I already have a phone.

Note: Silca sent the Viaggio Travel Pump to RidingGravel.com at no charge and we are not being paid nor bribed for this review. We strive to always give our hoest thoughts and opinions throughout.

Given one free (a $275 payment if you ask me), of course you’ll take it with you. If you sent it back like other reviewers do, the more interesting question is: would you then buy one with your own money?

@Tom in MN…First, I have no certain way of knowing whether or not ‘other’ reviewers send everything back, but I am pretty sure they do not based on years and years of doing this. Sometimes I do and sometimes I do not and that is almost always discussed right up front when the review sample is being arranged.

If I wanted what the Viaggio offered and I traveled a lot where the unique features made the most sense, and if I had the budget for it, then yes. I would buy it. It does everything it claims to do. The value equation is up to the buyer.

For me a floor pump in the car does the trick as I mentioned.

And even if it is free, like this was, if I did not like it I would not use it. Why would I? Frankly I would be more likely to use it if I had paid for it even if it was a so-so product since I am in for nearly 300 clams. Right?

The original inspiration for this and the Bluetooth Tattico was the misfortune of a friend at Dirty Kanza, borrowing a pump that morning, pumping up to 29psi only to pinch flat because the 29psi on THAT borrowed pump was more like 24psi. Then fixed that flat by feel, pinch flatted again 20 miles later, then fixed THAT flat and over-inflated just to be safe and rode the next 160 miles 5+ psi over desired pressure getting the crap beaten out of them. Some other friends had a similar experience at Cape Epic after spending more than $10k in entry fees and travel expenses, then struggling for 3 days to find the right air pressure with the cheap pump they bought in country.

The way I think about this is that the difference between a ‘stiff’ carbon fork and a ‘comfortable’ carbon fork on a gravel bike is less than 1psi tire pressure equivalent on a 40mm tire. Same for handlebars and seat posts, etc.. so we will obsess for weeks over spec’ing a bike and spend a fortune on components, then show up at an event and go by finger pressure or borrowed pump (with +/-5% gauge at best) and end up on something that is sub-optimal by a magnitude considerably larger than the gains we’ve made with our component selection.

Silca Viaggio travel pump review: High end smartphone-connected bike floor pump keeps commuters safe

matthew-miller

There seems to be applications today for just about every task you can think of and over the last few weeks I have come to appreciate a simple app and piece of gear that is essential to cycling. A bike pump is an essential piece of kit for bikers and when you are traveling 15 to 20 miles an hour on a bike it is important to have proper inflation on your tires.

  • The best Windows laptop you can buy: Expert tested
  • I'm building my dream smart home - here are the 5 things I decided on first
  • You can now make your own custom Copilot GPT. Here's how
  • I switched to this $150 Motorola phone for two weeks, and it went surprisingly well

I didn't think much about using a connected bike pump, but then the folks at Echos Communications sent along a Silca Viaggio travel pump and it is clear that a high quality pump can provide a safe and efficient cycling experience. I've also struggled with very small portable pumps, but this model is less portable while offering the stability and capability to pump up your tires faster in a sleeker profile than most standing floor pumps.

My daily commute consists of biking just over three miles to the train station, riding the train to Seattle, and then walking a mile to the office. Cycling six and half miles is pretty quick and easy thanks to the RadCity electric bike I've been riding for almost two years. It took a while, but I've experienced three flat tires over the last month. I was able to use a bit of tech and my phone to help fix those.

Specifications

  • iGauge compatible Bluetooth® enabled pressure sensor
  • Premium 731 leather gasket
  • Brass check valve assembly
  • Detachable handle + folding feet support
  • Schrader chuck + HIRO locking Presta chuck with a magnetic dock
  • Weight: 2.95lbs/1.34kg, Length: 57cm, Max PSI: 220

The Silca Viaggio Travel Pump comes in a cylindrical cardboard container and is wrapped in a waxed-canvas tool roll. I was expecting a much more portable pump, but the pump and tool roll is still small enough to travel with you on an extended trip. I could fit into my pannier on my RadCity and it works so well, I may just carry it on my daily commute.

The barrel of the pump is shiny silver made of 6061 aluminum material. In order to manipulate the pump, you first slide off the thick aluminum handle mounted along one side and the slide it onto the piston at the top of the pump. It is very well constructed and should last you for years.

Two feet fold down and lock into place so you can stand on the pump feet and keep it secure to the ground. There is a twist lock plastic cover at the bottom of the pump that houses a coin cell battery to power the Bluetooth radio.

The rubber air hose extends the length of the pump and then back down for a total hose length of greater than three feet. This means you can easily route the hose and chuck to your bike and stand back to pump the tire with your connected phone.

A very high quality HIRO locking Presta chuck is installed at the end of the hose with a Schrader end that secures to your tube. Everything about this pump is well designed and built to last.

Smartphone software.

The iGauge software is available for iOS and Android. It is a universal piece of software that works with a variety of compatible pumps. The gauge numbers are huge and take up about a quarter of my phone display.

Hook up the pump and start adding air to the tire to activate the Bluetooth transceiver. Once more than 6 psi is in the tire, data will be transmitted to iGauge. The default is psi, but you can also tap to view the pressure in bars if you desire.

Silca states that the software gauge is accurate to within 0.5 psi, which is much better than the 5+ psi I usually accept with my manual gauges. There are some other settings in the software, but I haven't found details on how to use those features and just rely on iGauge for the pressure reading.

Experiences and conclusions

The Viaggio Travel Pump is available now for $275, but if biking in an essential part of your daily commute or exercise routine then it may be worth the price. Having one at the office to help your employees keep their bike tires properly inflated is also something to consider. We have 50 percent of our engineering office biking to work during the summer months.

After my first tire went flat, I searched inside it and found a couple of blackberry thorns in the side wall. I removed them, replaced the tube, and then put some green Slime tube sealant inside it. I inflated the tube using a floor bike pump that has a gauge on the pump. I was watching the pressure on the pump and had plenty of capacity, or so I thought, when the tube blew up and green Slime went all over me and the garage. It just happened that my wife was in the garage at the time and was not impressed with my bike repair skills.

Thankfully, I had another spare tube so I put that on and went through the same routine, but checked the pressure with my dedicated gauge. This worked fine, but I had to bounce back and forth between the gauge and the pump to achieve proper tire pressure and have been satisfied with a 5-10 psi range. That tire also went flat about a week later with a sharp rock embedded into the tube and tire. The Slime worked, but the rock kept opening up the hole and slowly leaking air.

The Viaggio Travel Pump arrived after the second flat so I put it to the test. The Viaggio pump has a Schrader valve, which is what I have on the tubes of my electric and standard bikes. I installed the iGauge software and tried using the pump with nothing appearing on my phone. I deflated the tire and tried again, with no progress. I tried an Android phone and that didn't work either. I pulled things apart and realized there was a clear plastic insert in the coin cell battery found at the bottom of the pump so I removed that and was off and running.

The iGauge software has a large, easily readable electronic gauge so you can easily see the level of what you are pumping. At first I had a bit of air leaking out when I attached the chuck. I watched the video and adjusted the preload of the gasket and no more air came out when I used the pump. I confidently inflated my new tube and then checked the tire pressure in the three other bikes in the family.

The Silca Viaggio Travel Pump is a very high quality product that helps you inflate your tire to the correct pressure. It folds up well and fits nicely in the included waxed-canvas tool roll. There are plenty of open slots for your other bike tools too.

Silca introduces Viaggio Bluetooth-enabled travel pump

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

The tire inflation specialists at Silca have just announced their latest creation: a high-end travel pump called Viaggio (“travel” in Italian) that not only collapses for easy storage inside a travel case, but also boasts an electronic pressure sensor that sends readings in real-time to your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Wait, what?

As if travel pumps themselves aren’t enough of a niche product, the fact that Silca has opted to equip the Viaggio with an electronic pressure gauge instead of a mechanical arguably ups the ante into the truly silly realm. Or does it? Having used a number of dedicated travel pumps myself over the years (such as from Lezyne and Specialized), the idea of a compact pump that also offers a far more accurate (+/- 0.5psi, claimed) and legible pressure reading than the micro-sized gauges typically fitted in this product category is honestly quite appealing. The same technology is also used on Silca’s Tattico Bluetooth mini-pump.

Other features on the Viaggio include a properly sized removable aluminum handle, fold-out feet, a separate hose with Silca’s excellent Hiro locking chuck (plus Schrader compatibility if that’s your thing), and Silca’s trademark leather plunger and brass check valve, all of which are intended to be fully serviceable and rebuildable. As icing on the cake, the Viaggio is stored in a fancy waxed canvas bag, which also has room for whatever other tools you might need to assemble and disassemble your bike on-site.

Not surprisingly given the Silca brand name, the Viaggio is far from inexpensive at US$275 (pricing for other regions is TBC). But if you’re one of those frequent-flying cyclists who already has an ultra-high-end dedicated travel bike, this sort of thing might make sense. We just received one in for review, so we’ll chime in with firsthand impressions in the coming weeks.

Travel in style with your bike, and take the Silca Viaggio Travel Pump along.

This compact bike pump is constructed from high quality 6061 alloy and can be broken down and folded away for storage. The unique Bluetooth gauge makes for highly accurate reading of air pressure, through your phone, and the included CR2032 battery lasts for 100 hours of use.

Product Highlights

IGAUGE APP

Featuring a Bluetooth gauge that transmits tyre pressure data to the iGauge app on your smartphone, this takes the guesswork out of pumping up your tyres.

ROLL WRAP

TPU coated, the canvas roll wrap makes transporting the pump an easy process and ensures it remains protected when in transit.

6061 ALLOY CONSTRUCTION

Durable and designed to last the distance, the 6061 extruded alloy barrel has been paired with a detachable handle.

HIRO SIDE LOCKING CHUCK

Compatible with Presta and Schraeder valves, the chuck locks to the valve to provide a strong connection to the pump's hose.

Silca's Viaggio Travel Pump is not only extremely useful when travelling with your bike, but it also boasts the performance quality, durability and style that the brand is renowned for. Silca have designed this bike pump specifically for travel, without any compromises; the full-size handle is detachable, the feet fold, and there's a TPU coated canvas roll wrap with tool storage, so it packs down small to fit in your bike box or bag.

The 57cm barrel is constructed from custom extruded 6061 alloy, has a full-metal shock piston, Italian leather gasket and brass check valve, ensuring reliability, efficiency and smoothness. A Hiro side locking Presta chuck threads into the Schrader valve at the end of a 99cm rubber hose.

A unique and innovative pump, the Viaggio includes a Bluetooth pressure gauge. Just download the iGauge app onto your smartphone for easy reading. As accurate as they come, the system will read air pressure to within +/- 0.5psi of the true reading, and the CR2032 battery powering the sensor will last for 100 hours of use.

Finally, A Travel Pump That Doesn’t Compromise on Stability and Efficiency

Regular pumps tend to be bulky and hard to pack. Silca’s newest Viaggio Travel Pump solves those problems.

Silca-Viaggio-Bike-Pump-gear-patrol-lead-full

By Meg Lappe

If you’re planning a bike trip, traveling without a pump is risky, but packing one is often bulky and annoying. Silca’s new Viaggio Travel Pump eliminates those concerns with its portability and Bluetooth iGauge for precise tire pressure measurements. Silca’s bike pumps are par for the course for professional cycling teams and the gold standard for weekend warriors. The new travel pump means you don’t have to leave your trusty pump behind ever again.

The Viaggio Travel Pump has a detachable handle so it can easily fold into a waxed canvas roll. And, at 2.95-pounds and less than two feet long, it’s not adding a ton of weight to your carry-on or checked bag. To make it more compact, Silca removed the pressure gauge on the pump itself and replaced it with the Bluetooth-friendly iGauge app, so you’ll have to download that before using. It boasts the same volume and accuracy as all other Silca models, just slimmed down for travel.

Viaggo Travel Pump

Traveling with bikes often subjects us to estimated tire pressures, and sore biceps from spending way too long with a hand pump hammering as much air into our tires as possible in hopes of achieving that sweet spot. Silca, known for taking our go-to tools and refining them, does exactly that with the Viaggio Travel Pump, taking the guess work out of your travel pump, while still keeping things compact enough for life on the go.

This sleek travel pump combines a 22-inch barrel with collapsible feet for a compact fit that slides into your bag when you're heading on vacation, or neatly stores in the back seat of your car. But what really sets it apart from the average bike pump is its Bluetooth enabled pressure gauge, and Silca's award-wining HIRO chuck. The iGauge Bluetooth pressure gauge connects to your phone to enable pressure reading within 1% accuracy to dial in your tire pressure just right before your ride.

  • An elite pump for accuracy on the go
  • iGauge connects to phone for pressure reading
  • Premium leather gasket makes for a tight seal
  • Detachable handle and folding feet for compact fit
  • HIRO locking Presta chuck docks magnetically
  • Item #SLC001P

Performance. The pump comes in a cardboard, cigarette-shaped box. Pop off the top and out comes the Viaggio pump wrapped in a waxed canvas travel case with a red shoulder strap. Set up is pretty minimal with the Viaggio. There's a battery compartment on the very bottom of the pump with a plastic cover that encases the coin battery - a CR2032.

  3. Silca Viaggio travel pump review: Works well, but too big and too heavy

The Silca of travel pumps. Not surprisingly given Silca's other pumps, the Viaggio comes across as somewhat overbuilt and perhaps a little overly engineered for the task at hand. The body is made of extruded 6061 aluminum, and the removable handle is not only machined from aluminum, but its shape mimics that of Silca's SuperPista Ultimate ...

  7. Silca Viaggio Travel Pump Review

Viaggio = Travel. We recently flew to Tucson for a week of cycling. Not wanting to haul a full-size floor pump in our luggage, nor wanting to use a small hand-held pump, we opted on Silca's Viaggio Travel pump (Viaggio is Italian for travel). Weighing in at 2.95 lbs, it isn't the lightest option but it sure was a great one.

  9. A Review of the Viaggio Travel Pump by Silca

The Viaggio Travel Pump sells for $275; it is available directly from the manufacturer . What I Like: Portable, easy to use pump that works with or without app; Great for balls & Bikes. What Needs Improvemen t: iGauge app doesn't frequently receive app updates.

  10. Testing Today: Silca Viaggio Travel Pump

As travel pumps go, the Viaggio isn't exactly small. It's essentially a scaled-down floor pump. If you're looking for something truly diminutive and packable, you're probably better off with something like Lezyne's Micro Floor Drive. But if you're looking for something that's bigger, more stable, and able to pump up your tires ...
