Online Booking:

  • Timing : The booking window opens 30 days in advance and closes 24 hours before the safari date . Upon booking, you’ll receive confirmation via email and SMS, which you should print out and bring along with a valid photo ID to the safari.

  • Suitability : Perfect for those with flexible schedules or those making last-minute plans.

Tips for a Smooth Booking Experience:

  • Online Reservations : Ideal for ensuring your place and avoiding the uncertainty of on-the-spot booking.

Best Time to do Kabini Safari

Embarking on a Kabini Safari is a year-round possibility, yet timing your visit during the dry season , from November to May , significantly enhances the experience. This period is celebrated as the prime time for wildlife observation for several compelling reasons:

Prime Wildlife Spotting:

  • Enhanced Visibility : The sparse vegetation of the dry season dramatically improves animal sightings. Creatures big and small are easier to spot amidst the less dense foliage, offering a more rewarding safari experience.
  • Watering Hole Gatherings : As the Kabini River’s levels dwindle, expansive grasslands and riverbeds emerge, becoming a magnet for wildlife. This natural congregation point, especially for elephants, provides spectacular opportunities to witness these majestic animals in their social gatherings.
  • Pleasant Climate : With temperatures oscillating between a comfortable 15°C and 30°C, safaris are not only more enjoyable but also offer the perfect setting for extended explorations without the discomfort of extreme heat or cold.
  • Optimal Photography Conditions : The clear visibility and abundant natural light of the dry season are a boon for photography enthusiasts. Capturing the stunning landscapes and the diverse fauna in their natural settings becomes a more fruitful endeavor.
  • Increased Black Panther Sightings : The elusive and rare black panther, a highlight for many safari-goers, is more likely to be observed during this time as it ventures out in search of prey.

Planning Your Visit:

  • Avoiding the Monsoon : It’s advisable to plan your safari outside the monsoon months (July to September) when the park is closed. The dry season not only ensures accessibility but also promises a richer, more diverse wildlife experience.
  • Booking in Advance : Given the popularity of this peak season, securing your safari slots and accommodations in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment.

A Kabini Safari during the dry season offers an unrivaled window into the vibrant ecosystem of Nagarhole National Park. With nature at its most inviting, this period promises an unforgettable adventure filled with awe-inspiring animal encounters and serene natural beauty.

In Pursuit of Black Panther – The Ultimate Kabini Safari guide

My opening lines are a tale of all wildlife enthusiasts who come in pursuit of the Big Black Cat – the melanistic leopard or better known as the black leopard in Kabini forest. Many have been lucky to have spotted Blackie or the Black Panther in the first Kabini safari and then, there have been tales of many who have been able to see him only after 10 or more. That, however, does not mean that they always went back disappointed. Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary might just have one Black Panther but it sure has a wide variety of other exotic creatures that more than make up for the missing panther!

Kabini - a forest known for the amazing leopard sightings

Kabini Forest is in fact, one of the best places for spotting leopards . And if you haven’t spotted one in your Kabini Safari, you are most likely to at least spot a tiger and herds of elephants . Then there are sloth bears, exotic birds, tortoises, bats, barking deer, langurs, and….I can go on and on. Personally, Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary safaris have never disappointed me – making this forest of India my favorite place for enjoying the wildlife safari.

Through this guide to Kabini Safaris, I will be sharing the various attractions of Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary , where to stay in Kabini, how to get here, how to book a Kabini jeep safari and Kabini boat safari and what you can expect through your journey. It also, includes information on the best time to visit Kabini, the safari timings and prices . With all this information, I am sure that you will be soon planning your pursuit of various pals and the elusive Black Panther in Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary. So, let’s get started.

A quick background on Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary

A tiger that I encountered in one of the Kabini Safaris

Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary actually, encompasses two of the six zones of the larger 650 sq km Nagarhole forest (also, known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park ). The other zones border Coorg and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary . The huge deciduous spread is home to over 200 tigers and 100 leopards – which also made it a popular royal hunting ground for the Mysore Maharajas and the British viceroys. Today, one can still spot these majestic cats in almost all the zones but the density and opportunity to see are the highest in Kabini.

Kabini river that gives this zone of Nagarhole its name

One main reason for this is the Kabini River which gives this area its name and attracts numerous birds and animals around it. The wide and open Nilgiri and Teak plantations that make up the Kabini forest make it easier to spot these creatures. Furthermore, unlike its surrounding forest zones, Kabini is protected and there are no highways or human populations within it, making it secure for the wild.

Which of the Kabini Safaris should you choose?

What? There are more than one type of safaris?

Well, actually there is more than one type of safari and I would classify them based on the gates, the type of safari and their timings. These are organized by the Forest Department of Karnataka directly or by their associate – Jungle Lodges and Resorts. Let me decipher them all for you in this Kabini guide so that you know your options better.

Nagarhole Safaris – Options by Gates

Kabini with its open deciduous forests, ponds and river makes it favorable for wildlife sighting

As I mentioned earlier, Kabini is just one of the few zones of the larger Nagarhole forest. The larger area has three main gates from where one can take the safaris.

  • Veeranahosahalli Gate near Hunsur
  • Nanachi Gate near Kutta, closer to Coorg
  • Antharasanthe Gate in Kabini (also, called Dammanakatte or the Kakanakote gate)

Except for the Veeranahosahalli gate, the other gates for Kabini jungle safaris can be booked online using this website . These safaris are done in canters and jeeps. Most of the time you will find that the option of jeep safari in Kabini shows as full. The reason for this is that most of the Kabini jeep safaris are available only through JLR (more on this soon). You can nonetheless, give it a shot else, go ahead and book a Kabini safari on a canter or bus. Each gate has two safaris – one in the morning and the other at around 3 pm. Note that it is better to book at least 3 – 4 days in advance as the canters are limited and get filled very quickly.

While you can expect to see the same wildlife through the various regions, the opportunity to spot is higher at Kabini. Thus, it is best to do a Kabini jungle safari booking for the Antharasanthe Gate .

Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary Safaris by Type

There are two options that you have when it comes to booking the Kabini Safaris – a land safari and a boat safari . Both these options are available twice, every day. The morning ones start at 6 am while the afternoon ones are at 3 pm. The duration of each ranges between 2.5 hours to 3 hours. The experience and the wildlife that you see is what differentiates the two!

Kabini Boat Safari

Kabini Boat Safari - a dynamic option that birders would love

The Kabini boat safaris begin at the Jungle Lodges (JLR) campus . You can do a Kabini backwaters forest safari booking through your resort. It does not matter which Kabini resort you are staying in for this. Most of them have a tie-up with the JLR desk and all you have to do is ask your resort to book a slot for you in that day’s boat safari. (The morning ones will have to be booked a day in advance) . Your resort might charge you a little extra for the drop and pick-up that they offer to JLR – unless it is a part of their Kabini safari packages.

According to me, t he best time for a Kabini Safari on a boat is during the second half of the day . It gets fairly misty in the morning and you might not have clear visibility when on the boat.

What kind of wildlife can you expect to see with a Kabini Boat Safari?

The migratory Bar Headed Geese seen on a safari by boat in Kabini

If you are an avid birder, you will love the Kabini boat safari. From the resident kingfishers, cormorants, ospreys and storks to the migratory rare birds like the the bar-headed geese, I saw them all. What was even more amazing was that I could see them in action at close quarters – swooping and catching their prey, launching and landing and flying close to the water. Read more about the Kabini birdlife in this post .

Black cormorants seen during the Kabini Boat Safari

As the expert boatman guides the vessel around, he will point out to the various land mammals and reptiles. It is almost certain that you will see spotted deers, langurs and elephants. In fact, during my Kabini sightings on the boat safari included so many elephants – herds, babies and tuskers that I finally ceased being amazed by them.

Herd of elephants seen on a boat safari

The Kabini river safari allows you to get really close to the Indian muggers . The lazy creatures lie around like mute statues in an open museum. At one point, we got so close that I could count the crooked teeth in the crocodile’s jaw. Of course, I got a start when it suddenly slid into the water right next to the boat! Ooops!

Indian Mugger Crocodile that I saw during my Kabini Boat Safari

On some lucky days, the people on a boat safari in Kabini have been able to see tigers and leopards by the riverside. It is not uncommon to spot the exotic Malabar hornbills and serpent eagles too, when on a boat ride. On the whole, I found that the Kabini river boat safari was a little more dynamic as compared to the land safari with all the action that went around the river. There was not one dull moment!

Land Safaris – Kabini Jeep Safari and Canter Safaris

If you are looking for Bagheera (Blackie or the Black Panther) and its catty comrades, then it is an easy choice of Kabini forest Safaris. Land safari it is!

There are two ways in which you can explore Kabini by land – one is by way of the Government Canters and the other is by Kabini Jeep Safari. The forest department canters can be booked through the Nagarhole website and have limited availability. You can even book these in person by reaching the Antharasanthe Gate in Kabini a day in advance for the morning safari and around 10 am for the evening safari.

Kabini Jeep Safari is ideal to spot the bigger mammals and the Cats

The Kabini Jeep Safaris are exclusive to Jungle Lodges and Resorts and its guests only. These JLR Kabini safaris are included in the stay package of that property. It is not possible to do these jeep JLR safari bookings on your own – though you will find an option on the website but it is almost always shown as full. You can try you luck at the JLR Resorts – if they have any extra seats lefts. This is usually after their guests are accomodated.

If you are staying at any other Kabini resort, then you have two options for a land canter safaris. The first is through the Nagarhole website or approaching the Forest gates directly. The second is through your own Kabini resort that has slots in the canters operated through JLR and forest officials. Recently, there is a new bus (a little luxurious with plush seats) along with the open air canters.

Zone B of Kabini forest that is close to the river

Kabini forest is divided into A zone and B zone. The A zone is largely forest, wooded area while the B zone takes you closer to the Kabini river. Frankly, this is more of a good-to-know fact as you have no control over which zone you will be taken to. The vehicles are divided randomly between the two zones and once you are in a particular zone, you will only be in that area.

Morning or noon safari? Well, experts say that morning safari is always better but frankly, my experience says that it is all on your luck. The few times that I have gone on Kabini safaris, I have had amazing sightings at noon.

What kind of wildlife can you expect to see with a Kabini Forest Safari by land?

Kaimara Male Leopard that I saw during my Kabini Jeep Safari

BIG CATS – including the Royal Bengal tiger and the leopards . And of course the one exclusive melanistic leopard – Bagheera. I have been lucky to have seen them and yes, in one single Kabini Safari (not the last one but the penultimate one).

Kaimara Female leopard sitting on a tree - sadly she refused to face us

It is pretty normal to catch these big cats on the land but to see the leopards on the trees is something else. A Kabini forest safari is one experience that gives you an opportunity to actually spot them climbing, lying down and even jumping off the trees.

Grey Langurs - commonly found in Kabini Forest

Spotted deers, barking deers, wild gaurs and langurs are as common as people in a city. Here and there, you are likely to come across Indian terrapins and tortoises. This set of three were so small and camouflaged.

Indian Terrapins - spotted on a land safari in Kabini

“ There ….see three Indian Terrapins on the rock?” – said our naturalist

“ Where ? I can’t see them.” – I complained

“ See those rocks, and something coming out of them? ” he says

“ Uh Huh!” – I mumble!

“ Those are the heads of the Terrapin. Focus your lens on those” – he laughed while I gasped at the way his eyes had spotted these tiny creatures without binoculars!

Osprey with its kill - caught during a land safari in Kabini

Giant Malabar Squirrels and elephant herds are the other creatures that I have seen in the Kabini forest. It is a little hard to spot the birds in the dense jungle but the few that I did manage to catch were Ospreys and Eagles .

Leopards sightings are the other highlight of Pench national park safaris

The other wildlife park where you can spot leopards in plenty is Pench National Park. I was lucky to have spotted cubs through two of my safaris there. Read about those as well as how to book a Pench safari

How to book a Kabini safari?

A quick synopsis of what I have already explained – there are two ways to book your Land safari – the first through your resort in Kabini. These resorts have a quota with the canters operated by Jungle Lodges. The charges for the safari might be a little higher considering the transport to and from the Safari gates. Kabini Jeep safaris can only be booked if you are staying with JLR.

The second option is through the forest office. You can head to the Antharasanthe Gate in Kabini and book your spot in the Government canter. Remember to book these Kabini forest department safaris at least one day in advance for the morning. For the evening one, you need to get your spot by 10 am for that day. You can also, book Kabini safari online through the Nagahole website.

For the Kabini river safaris, you have to reserve a place through your own resort. Each resort or hotel in Kabini have their quota with JLR. There is no option to do a Kabini boat safari online booking.

Common FAQs about booking a Kabini forest safari

How to reach kabini .

The closest airport to Kabini is in Bengaluru (275 km). Bengaluru is well connected to not just the rest of India but outside India too. One can hire a cab from the airport to take you straight to Kabini via Mysuru. Alternately, you can book one of the many daily trains from Bangalore to Mysore and then head to Kabini from Mysore.

Mysore is just 90 km from Kabini. Though it has a domestic airport, the frequency of flights is very low. It is best used as a central railway station for Kabini. One can either book a cab online or at the railway station for Kabini.

Where to stay in Kabini?

There are tons of resorts in Kabini that offer you comfortable stay options with good food and activities like Nature walks, mini safaris, kayaking and more. However, note that they are all quite expensive. There are no budget stays in Kabini. Jungle Lodges and Resorts is the most popular stay option in Kabini but it does get booked fairly quickly during the peak season.

Besides JLR, you have options like The Serai . Kabini Waterwoods , Kabini Evolveback , Kaav Safari Lodge , Red Earth and the Bison. All these really get busy and it is recommended that you book them as early as possible. I have stayed with Kabini waterwoods and Kaav safari lodge . I loved both these and you can see why by checking out the given links.

Other than these, you also have the forest dormitories that you can book through the Nagarhole forest department website.

How many Kabini wildlife safaris should I book?

At least two land safaris and one boat safari in Kabini is ideal.

Is Kabini worth it?

A big yes from me! Kabini wildlife reserve is one of the most under-rated forests and full of surprises. The density of animals in this small forest is quite huge and that ensures some good sightings for its visitors.

Additional travel tips for Kabini safaris

  • Make sure that you carry your Government ID cards as ID proofs. If you have done an online Kabini safari booking, then ensure that the ID that you have entered while filling the form is the same as what you present at the gate.
  • Wear comfortable cotton clothes with muted colors like greens, browns or blacks. Carry a scarf or a hat to protect your hair.
  • The Kabini safaris can get really dusty. You will find a fine layer of red sand over you once you finish the safari. There is no avoiding the same.
  • Do not make loud noises and attract attention. Put your phones on silent during the wildlife safari
  • Getting off the vehicles during the safaris in Kabini is strictly prohibited.
  • Carry lots of water and stay hydrated. Keep some dry snacks if you wish.
  • No plastic items are allowed inside the forest. You will have to remove them before you start the safari.
  • There are rest-rooms at the Kabini safari gates.

I havent done a safari yet and I do plan to do one in Africa to see all the ‘Lion King’ animals however I would also love to check this safari out. I am a huge lover of big cats, and to see tigers, panthers and leopards in the wild, I am there! Now I just got to check where Kabini is as I never heard of the place. Have bookmarked this page for furture reference ust in case I want to see those beautiful creatures. 🙂 (My kids sure would love a safari as well right now, much better than them keep watching Discovery Channel during lockdown here in the UK)

Nothing better than seeing the wildlife for real. And Kabini in that respect is quite raw.

I am definitely putting this on my bucket list. I have always wanted to do a safari to see these wild animals in person, and Kabini looks like a great option. If I could see a tiger in the wild I would die happy!

Oh then you should definitely get to Kabini and fast!

I haven’t been to Kabini yet, Amy. And I so want to visit it now as I am in India. I loved how you spent good time in Kabini. I especially loved the boat safari. But, even in the land, you got great sighting of animals. Thanks for sharing the stay options.

Both the safaris – boat and land are so worth your time. Each is different in their own way. Hope you get here soon

Ooh! I would love to do a boat safari. We went on a true safari, which was only by land, but that sounds like such a great option! I wish there were a few budget stays in the area, but with it being a once in a lifetime trip, it’s ok to splurge a bit. I love seeing animals in their natural habitats! 🙂

You got that right! Worthwhile the spend for something so real

Wow! Look at all that magnificent cats you’ve got to see on Land Safari. I will definitely do this when I visit Kabini. Other animals are so attractive, too. The elephants, the monkey, the birds… They look happy to be in their habitat. The Boat Safari looks cool, too, as you get to see the elephants by the river side. And possible sightings of tigers and leopards as well. Awesome!

You are bound to spot something really cool when in Kabini. It is so worth your time. Hope you can try it for yourself.

I have never seen a wildlife sanctuary before (which is kind of sad), but I am planning go on a safari in Africa. However, after seeing what a magnificent experience Kabini is, makes me think I should add this to the list also. It’s good to know they offer both land and water safaris, but I think I’d rather go on land. Seeing elephants, monkeys, wild gaurs and even leopards, sounds way more appealing!

I would not discount the boat safari – it is different and fun too, especially if you like birds. In any case, hope you can visit soon

Woah Ami! That first picture of the leopard would convince literally every animal lover to add Kabini in their bucket list. And seriously, I didn’t even know there were more than one kind of Safaris one could choose! The boat safari looks amazing and I would totally opt for it if pressed for time. It is sad that there aren’t any budget options in the area, but I guess managing and maintaining a place in such a forest without disrupting the area would not be cheap, plus this is a once in a lifetime experience so I guess it is all worth it!

True that – given it is a lifetime experience, it is worth spending a little for the stay. And so far, Kabini has never disappointed me!

Oh my God you saw a tiger? That has been my wishlist for so long and unfortunately I have not seen a tiger in the wild. I have seen leopards a few times and once when I was in Kabini as well. I love going to Kabini over and over again and I will definitely go back when I am in India next time.

Kabini so far has been really kind to me. I hope the same luck passes onto you when you try it out next.

Safaris have long been in our bucketlist! We love how you get to have such an upclose experience with wildlife in their natural habitat. Kabini looks especially beautiful and adventurous and will definitely include it in our destinations one day.

Glad you like it Marielle

Thanks for the detailed information. Can we take boat safari ride by purchasing tickets at the counter on the day rather than going through a resort? I just want to drive to the safari counter and buy tickets.

For the boat safari, you will have to go to the resort and book your tickets. Either way, you can only board from the resort. Safari counter usually gives you tickets only for the land safari.

Thanks for the info, One of the hoarding in Antharasanthe says safari bookings can be made 1hour prior to the safari start time. Can you please confirm that? If possible, please share the contact information of Forest range office.

I am sorry but I do not have the phone number. Also, the information on the blog is the latest that I have from them. Hope that helps

Thank you for all the information Ami , very valuable while planning. Quick question , which resort is closest to the gate Antharasanthe Gate? And for the land safari’s is there a limit to the number of people on a jeep?

Jungle lodges would be the closest. However, all the resorts in Kabini offer a drop and pick up to the gate or Jungle lodges as a complimentary service. As for the capacity, the jeep has a seating for 6 but is only available through Jungle lodges.

  • January 12, 2021

Kabini forest Karnataka

Options for a kabini safari , boat safari:, jungle safari:, jeep safaris, 26-seater mini-bus (canter) safaris, making kabini jungle safari booking, kabini jungle safari online booking, steps to make your booking:, final thoughts.

Karnataka is well endowed with tranquil mountain peaks, sparkling backwaters, luscious forests, and beautiful beaches, making it a popular holiday destination. Among the wide variety of exquisite locales to visit and explore there, Kabini would be one of the most prominent destinations. Hardly a 5-hour drive from Bangalore, Kabini is an incredible getaway spot for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Kabini is home to a wide variety of wildlife species, including some of the endangered ones. Ever seen a herd of elephants crossing the river? Or spotted a majestic leopard among the bushes? You can enjoy such awe-inspiring experiences and much more by going to the Nagarahol e tiger reserve .

The Kabini forest provides shelter to elephants, leopards, panthers, monkeys, sloth bears, crocodiles, sambhar, bison, spotted deer, and multiple other species of wildlife.

Interested in knowing more about the rich wildlife of Kabini? Read our blog “ Wildlife of Kabini: A spectacular array of fauna ”!

With such spectacular wildlife, Kabini beckons us all to her beautiful forests, making us fall in love over and over again! Let us now browse through the options available to enjoy a magnificent Kabini Safari!

Elephant-jeep-safari

Kabini Backwaters Forest Safari is an extremely popular experience conducted by the Karnataka Forest Department in Kabini River. There are various lodges and guest houses in the region through which you can enjoy a boat safari at Kabini as well. Going on a Kabini safari on a boat in the Kabini river would be the perfect way to admire the lush green surroundings, and nearby flora and fauna.

On the banks of the Kabini River, you may spot a herd of majestic Asiatic elephants peacefully bathing, feeding, and getting on with their lives. Amongst the plethora of wildlife present on the river banks, you may observe smooth-coated otters playing in the water, marsh crocodiles lazing on the banks, as well as a myriad of water birds dipping in and out of the water.

For a detailed overview of the beautiful birds of Kabini, read our blog, “Birds of Kabini”(upcoming). A boat safari would surely be one of the most innovative and exciting ways to explore Kabini and absorb its beauty. These safaris are operated by Jungle Lodges & Resorts (owned by the Karnataka government).

Boat safari kabini

This is the most common and popular way to visit and explore the exceptionally beautiful and lavish forests of Kabini. You can make either a mini-bus or jeep Kabini safari booking to reach the heart of the forest, and take a look at the wilderness from up-close. By going on such a safari, you may get the opportunity to spot various wild animals like tigers, leopards, elephants, and sambar deer, as well as birds like a peacock and crested hawk-eagle.

This jungle safari is controlled by government authorities. Hence, you have to follow certain terms and conditions when going on this Kabini safari. Below are the various vehicle options you can find for the jungle safari. It is important that you carefully check out the details of each of them, and then opt to book the one that perfectly suits your requirements and budget.

Jeep safaris are operated by Jungle Lodges & Resorts. Kabini jeep safari booking can be made through the resorts you are staying in if they are associated with the forest department. Your resort booking can get you a place on this safari, and its expenses are generally included in the tariff itself.

Kabini Safari

Operated by the Forest Department, these budget-friendly safaris are an ideal choice for people enjoying their trip with a large group of friends or family members. The mini-bus safari runs twice each day, and these Kabini safari timings are from 6.30 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. , and again in the afternoon from 3.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m on weekdays and the weekends, there are 4 safaris conducted at 6.00 a.m to 7.30 a.m , 7.30 a.m to 9.00 a.m and 3.00 p.m to 4.30 p.m , 4:30 p.m to 6.00 p.m later on in the day.

Its tickets have to be purchased from the Forest Department booking counter present at the Nagarhole National Park or can be booked online. These counters open about 30 minutes before the start of the safaris, and hence it is important to be on time to make the bookings.

The Nagarhole National Park has two distinctive safari zones- Zone A and Zone B. Zone B is close to the Kabini backwaters. The safari tours booked through Jungle Lodges & Resorts can cover only one of these zones at a time. While on the other hand, the Forest Department canter safaris enjoy unrestricted access to both of these zones.

The boat, as well as the vehicular Kabini jungle safari bookings, can easily be made through your resort if you are staying in one of the tourism department lodges. Read our blog “ Top 5 Resorts in Kabini ” to learn more about our favourite resorts in Kabini!

Alternatively, you can make your Kabini jungle safari (on a canter) by visiting the Dammanakatte Forest Department office in Antharasanthe. This office is located close to the Kabini forest gate. You shall need a valid government ID card to make your bookings from there.

While there are several private lodges and resorts present near the Kabini jungle, not all of them have permission to make safari bookings for their guests. Hence, it is important that you properly check out the details of the hotel you are booking your stay in.

Quite recently, the Forest Department has launched an online booking facility for a Kabini safari at the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve website ( www.nagaraholetigerreserve.com ). This Kabini jungle safari online booking facility comes as a huge boon for tourists.

For a long time, to book a canter safari, wildlife enthusiasts had to sometimes stand in a huge queue at Damanakatte. The online booking facility now allows people to avoid any long queues and enables them to make their bookings within just a few minutes. Additionally, as the early morning safari starts at 6.30 a.m., many tourists had to leave Mysore very early in the morning, to make their bookings in time for all these years. This problem is easily solved with the online booking facility.

Moreover, as you can make Kabini jungle safari online booking right from your home, you do not have to waste a single moment of the tour in standing in queues, and shall be able to enjoy your holidays optimally by engaging in diverse, exciting activities amidst the enthralling greenery and natural beauty of this wonderland of Karnataka.

  •  Visit the official website of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, which is
  •   www.nagaraholetigerreserve.com
  •  Go to the booking section of the website
  •  Click on the ‘Book Rooms/Wildlife Safari’ option
  •   Log in to the website. If you do not have an account there, make a new one
  •   Provide relevant details as per the options present on your screens
  •   Select the date and timings of the Kabini safari as per your requirements
  •   Re-check all the details provided
  •   Proceed to make your payment

The same document number as entered on the website while making the online booking has to be produced at the time of the actual safari.

The diverse wildlife of Kabini offers extraordinary game viewing. The beauty of a Kabini safari is amplified because of the various available options. While the boat safari on the stunning backwaters gives an outer view of the forest, the jungle safaris take us into the depths of it. One can sight the spectacular wildlife in its natural habitat, on both the safaris.

Going on a Kabini safari would be an extremely thrilling and adventurous endeavor for any person. There is nothing better than being out in nature while having fresh air and wildlife as companions. So do not forget to make your safari bookings and plan a getaway to Kabini!

A day at the banks of Kabini Backwaters ...

Updated: Jan 14, 2022

The year 2020 will possibly be remembered as the year of the pandemic, where entire world struggled but eventually came together against the Covid-19 pandemic. We desperately wanted to make some good fond memories out of Year 2020 and travel to few places at least to get out of the routine of work from home. After having to stay indoors / work from home and volunteering with local NGO for few weeks during Migrant Laborers travel crisis, we wanted to have a family getaway somewhere close to Bengaluru city. And since the Covid first wave was coming to an end, and ease of travel restrictions allowed us to plan a small getaway close to Bengaluru in November month.

antharasanthe safari timings

Please Note: We as a responsible citizens, have followed all the Covid-19 appropriate behavior such as wearing masks at all times/Use of sanitizers/Staying away from crowd by social distancing, during our short 1-day travel within the state.

The Planning of the Journey:

I had been to Kabini previously on solo one day ride from Bengaluru back in 2017, but had not visited few places and not stayed in Kabini. And this time I came across a nice resort in Kabini which was recommended as family friendly and a relaxed getaway from the city's hustle bustle life. So, I began searching for a Rental car option with a driver who can help us reach Kabini along with our family and travel back to Bengaluru on the next day. After doing some inquiry and research on Google/Facebook, I came across "Shesha's Globe Trot" - a Travel Agency which provides SUV Cab services from Bengaluru to other places. Thus we decided our dates for travel and prepared for our journey.

antharasanthe safari timings

The Journey:

On November 28, as per our plan, We started from our place in Bengaluru at around 5:30am and took NICE Ring Road to hit the Mysore Road (a highway which connects Bengaluru to Mysore). The total journey of Kabini Lake-view Resort from Bengaluru was around 210 kms (4hr 45mins) ride. On the way, we had breakfast in "Hotel Ruchi Mane" close to Srirangapatna. The food was extremely good and the hotel was maintaining all the hygiene and following all the Covid-19 guidelines to safeguard its staff as well as customers.

After breakfast, we went further on the Mysore road and took a right turn towards Ring Road for bypass (to avoid entering Mysore City) and head towards Heggadadevankote (H.D.Kote) to eventually reach the Kabini Lake view resort, where we had our stay booked for a night.

There were very less travelers staying in Kabini Resort that day, apart from 2 or 3 other groups. So, we were greeted by coffee/tea, before we checked into our cottages and freshened up. Once we came out of our cottages, we were welcomed by the sounds of chirping birds at the property which is filled with lots trees and grassland to wander around and relax with nature. In the afternoon we were invited to the sumptuous buffet lunch (Vegetarian) at the open dining place at the resort itself.

antharasanthe safari timings

Post lunch we took some rest and at around 3:30pm, we woke up to the sounds of Rain drops and we thought our evening plan to visit Kabini Backwaters and boat ride would be hampered. But around 4:30 the rain subsided and we took off to visit the open backwaters of Kabini which was around 07kms from our resort. Amid the slight drizzle we walked to the shores of Kabini Backwaters which was surrounded by the Nagarahole Forest. It was a precious and priceless view of cloudy skies and calm waters of Kabini and after so many days of Lock-down due to the pandemic, this was even more precious. We wandered around the shores of Kabini until we were forced to get inside our car due to heavy rains.

Since there was no hope left for the Boat ride in Kabini Backwaters due to intermittent rains and the sun was setting down for the day, we decided to head back to our resort. When we reached our resort, the rains stopped, clouds moved away and we felt cheated by the nature :)

Finally, we decided to play some Badminton in the open ground of resort and some cycling to make it more fun as our parents took the opportunity to walk together around the trees of the resort garden which was much needed getaway for them too to feel some nature after so many days of isolation at home.

antharasanthe safari timings

During our dinner time, we noticed, few more families have turned up into the resort in the evening for the night's stay in the resort. The dinner was multi-cuisine buffet and food was delicious and well prepared. The kitchen at the resort, takes side orders as well to prepare the food of guest's liking as well, if requested which is a plus point when you are travelling with family.

Next day morning, we head to Antharasanthe Forest range for our morning jungle safari which was pre-booked online by us a few days back. We waited for our safari bus to arrive, and this was the only time, we felt, there was a slight problem as it was very difficult to ensure social distancing inside a bus with more than 20 people. All in all, we masked up properly and sanitized our hands regularly during the entire safari and so do few other groups in the bus did the same. We were lucky enough to spot a tiger taking a morning dump in full human view on the safari route itself. I guess it was a more polite "tiger way" of marking its territory :) We could spot more number Deer's and Peafowls and listen to the chirping of birds. It was a safari of around 1hr 30minutes, by covering around 10-15kms of forest area, in search of Elephants and Tigers.

After the safari, we head back to our base which is Kabini Lake-view resort and had our breakfast. At around 10am we checked out from the resort and started our return journey.

We had only 3 more stops before we reach back to Bengaluru.

antharasanthe safari timings

Stop-1: Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary.

On the return journey, our stop was at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary in Srirangapatna. We had visited this place many a times and last on October 2020, when the lockdown and travel restrictions were lifted. We reached this place around 11am and spent some good 2 hours here, observing the birds, Exploring the Tree Park, Boat ride to watch the migratory birds like Pelican and also visiting the Dr. Salim Ali Museum situated on site. (More details in the next section)

antharasanthe safari timings

Stop-2: Lunch at Halli Mane dine-in Restaurant

We stopped for lunch at Halli Mane Restaurant, which was a crowded place but food was authentic and had many varieties to choose from. We had the Halli Mane special thali where we were served with welcome dish as well.

Stop-3: Shopping for handmade toys at Channapatna

After lunch, we continued our journey and stopped at Channapatna Toy store for shopping some famous wooden engraved toys from here, for which the town of Channapatna is famous worldwide.

The road condition was bad from Mandya to NICE Road diversion near Kumbalgodu, due to the on-going construction of Elevated Expressway corridor between Bengaluru - Mysore. We reached home at around 7pm, safe and sound with a mindful of good memories which would be needed, to keep us going, until we get over with this difficult patch of Pandemic life.

Places Visited:

1. Kabini Backwaters:

At a distance of 210kms from Bengaluru ( 4hr 30mins ride ), this can be reached via Mysore road and a diversion at Mysore Ring Road towards H.D Kote (Heggadevanakote). There are plenty of good resorts here at Kabini close to the backwaters like Kabini Red Earth, Kabini Lake View Resort etc.

We stayed in Kabini Lake View Resort and the facilities and our stay was really worth it. Kabini Backwaters is right next to the Resort, but for a clear view and to get close to the Kabini waters, we need to go for boat ride or travel further 07 kms towards Red Earth Kabini resort, where you can drive all the way to the banks of Kabini River and feel the vibes of backwater and sunset. Antharasanthe Range of Nagarahole National Park is just 5kms away from Kabini Lake View Resort, where you can go for Jungle Safari organized by the Forest Range office (Dammanakatte).

2. Nagarahole National Park (Antharasanthe Range):

At a distance from 220kms from Bengaluru and 5kms from Kabini, this Antharasanthe Forest Range office of Nagarahole National Park offers Jungle Safari on daily basis. This is one of the crucial stretch of connecting habitat for tigers and elephants to other areas of Western Ghats through Brahmagiri wildlife sanctuary and to the Eastern Ghats through Bandipur Tiger reserve. This national park boasts of being a home for over 300 species of flora and fauna and deemed as the Tiger Reserve and also has the highest number Asian elephants anywhere in the world.

Details about Safari booking can be looked up at below website of the Nagarahole National Park:

For Safari you have two options. Either on Bus organized by the Antharasanthe Forest Range office or Jeep Safari organized by the JLR (Jungle Lodges & Resorts) and JLR option is a bit pricey, but worth the money for the professional wildlife enthusiasts, who need a bit more personalized safari.

Safari Charges on Bus from Dammankatte : 400rs/per person

Safari Charges on Private Van or Jeep (Organised by JLR) : 1500rs - 2000rs/per person

During weekends there will be one more additional trip in the morning as well as in the evening.

3. Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, Srirangapatna:

This is one of the very well maintained Bird Sanctuary with multiple observatories to view the migratory birds, which descend upon the quiet village of Ranganathittu and make their home during winters in India, between November - March. The Kaveri river flow from the nearby KRS dam, fills up the Ranganathittu wetlands and makes the home for marsh crocodiles too here in the sanctuary. There are multiple small islands (some of which are man-made) for the birds to create their nests and live peacefully for their summer vacation here in Ranganathittu.

There is boating facility which takes us for a 30min ride around the Sanctuary getting up and close with birds as well as with the Crocodiles in the water. This is one of the best places to spend time with nature in and around Mysore during winter season.

Entry Fee for Ranganathittu Sanctuary: 75rs/- for Adults, (25rs/- Kids) - Differential pricing for Foreigners

Boating Charges: 100rs/- for Adults, (35rs/- Kids) - Differential pricing for Foreigners

Route Taken:

We had taken the Mysore Road (Highway from Bengaluru to Mysore) and then H.D Kote route as our chosen route for this journey. During our journey in Nov.2020 the road conditions of Mysore Road was poor (lot of diversions) due to Elevated Expressway construction.

Bengaluru -> Electronic City NICE Road -> Srirangapatna-> H.D.Kote -> Kabini -> Antharasanthe Nagarahole Forest Range -> H.D Kote -> Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary -> Srirangapatna -> Bengaluru

with Overall 450 kms (around 10 hrs) of road journey.

Our Stay during this Kabini Trip:

First of all, our entire Kabini trip was planned around this stay option, which I came across from the recommendation through some travel bloggers over instagram who recently traveled and stayed there, so would like to share some experience of our stay at Kabini Lake-View resort from Nov.2020.

It was easy to locate the resort over google maps and except the last 1km stretch of the road (mud road with lots of up's and down's which could be a nightmare for some low ground clearance vehicles) the roads were pretty good. We eventually came to know there is another way to reach the resort by avoiding this bad stretch, if you go little further towards Antharasanthe and then take left turn between a village.

antharasanthe safari timings

The open parking space was huge and so was the playground for any kind of games/sports or also for any event/function at the resort. We arrived early at the resort before our check-in time, but we were welcomed and within 15mins our cottages were cleaned and allotted for us. The cottages were tidy and clean with spacious living area and clean bathrooms with linen/toiletries.

Coming to the food served, it was always a buffet option for breakfast as well as Lunch/Dinner, but we could order separate side-orders as well to our liking, which was fulfilled by the Resort kitchen.

antharasanthe safari timings

For exploring and to have fun within the resort, we had cycling, badminton and cricket kits at the resort. So, if you come with a decent sized group, you can have fun here as the resort has open play area in center surrounded by tree lines. The staff at the resort can help you book or guide you in planning the short trips around various places in and around Kabini and also help you plan and book Safari for the Nagarahole National Park and can arrange vehicles for transit, if requested in advance. All in all, it was pleasant stay experience at the resort which made our trip more comfortable and memorable as well.

Our CAB / Chauffeur for the Trip:

It was very well co-ordinated by Shesha's Globe Trot and we highly recommend their SUV CAB services and the Driver was very polite and managed our trip really well. The SUV was neat and clean and sanitized before and after our ride, keeping in mind of the Pandemic.

Food Options (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) on the route:

1. Hotel Ruchi Mane, Srirangapatna:

A nice homely atmosphere to have food with family on the Mysore road. It is situated in the Mysore Road, just after Srirangapatna town. There are many breakfast and lunch options on the menu and hygiene is well maintained while food preparation and serving. The sitting arrangement is good (far away tables keeping in mind of Social Distancing) along with clean washroom availability on site, which is not only for hotel customers, but also for the ongoing travelers as well. The open parking in front of the restaurant is spacious and well organized by the parking attendant.

antharasanthe safari timings

2. Halli Mane Dine-in Restaurant, Srirangapatna:

A rather crowded restaurant (little crowded during our visit during back in Nov.2020), but well known for its Village style cuisines and overall setup of the restaurant. All types of cuisine available, but South Indian cuisine is a specialty here, the sitting arrangement is spacious along with clean washrooms. We were served free welcome dish of rice based idiyappam and thick sweet gravy before our lunch order. Parking is available in front of the hotel along with a parking attendant, but since the proximity of restaurant is very close to highway, the space is not enough for parking many 4-wheeler at a time due to the crowd of customers.

How to book a Kabini Safari

Numerous wildlife species, including some that are endangered, can be found in Kabini. Ever seen an elephant herd cross a river? Or did you spot a magnificent leopard hiding in the bushes? By visiting the Nagarahole tiger reserve, you can take advantage of these incredible experiences as well as many others.

Elephants, leopards, panthers, monkeys, sloth bears, crocodiles, sambhar, bison, spotted deer, and numerous other wildlife species find refuge in the Kabini forest.

Are you curious to learn more about Kabini's diverse wildlife? Read "Wildlife of Kabini: A Spectacular Amount of Fauna" in our blog!

Kabini beckons us to her lovely forests with such amazing wildlife, making us fall in love over and over again! Let's look at the possibilities for having fun now.

Kabini Safari Options:

Boat safari: .

The Karnataka Forest Department offers the wildly popular Kabini Backwaters Forest Safari in Kabini River. You can also take a boat safari at Kabini through one of the many lodges and guest houses in the area. The ideal way to appreciate the surrounding lush greenery and local flora and fauna would be to take a boat on a Kabini safari.

antharasanthe safari timings

You might see a herd of majestic Asiatic elephants peacefully taking a bath, eating, and living their lives on the banks of the Kabini River. You may see smooth-coated otters playing in the water, marsh crocodiles relaxing on the banks, as well as a variety of water birds dipping in and out of the water, among the abundant wildlife present on the river banks.

Read our blog post titled "Birds of Kabini" for a thorough overview of the stunning birds that call Kabini home (upcoming). One of the most creative and exciting ways to discover Kabini and take in its beauty would undoubtedly be a boat safari. Jungle Lodges & Resorts is the company in charge of these safaris (owned by the Karnataka government).

Jungle Safari:

The most frequent and well-liked method of visiting and taking in the magnificent and lavish forests of Kabini is by doing so. To get to the centre of the forest and see the wilderness up close, you can book a minibus or a jeep Kabini safari. You might have the chance to see a variety of wild animals while on a safari like this, including tigers, leopards, elephants, and sambar deer, as well as birds like peacocks and crested hawk eagles.

antharasanthe safari timings

The government has control over this jungle safari. So, in order to participate in this Kabini safari, you must abide by certain rules. The different types of vehicles available for the jungle safari are listed below. It is crucial that you carefully review each of their specifics before choosing to make a reservation for the one that best fits your needs and price range.

Jeep Safari:

Jungle Lodges & Resorts operate Jeep safari tours. If the resorts you are staying at are connected to the forest department, you can book a Kabini jeep safari through them. You can reserve a spot on this safari when making reservations at your resort, and the cost is typically covered by the tariff.

antharasanthe safari timings

These low-cost safaris, run by the Forest Department, are ideal for people travelling with a large group of friends or family members. The mini-bus safari runs twice a day, from 6.30 a.m. to 9.00 a.m., and again in the afternoon from 3.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. on weekdays and weekends, there are four safaris conducted at 6.00 a.m. to 7.30 a.m, 7.30 a.m to 9.00 a.m, and 3.00 p.m to 4.30 p.m, 4:30 pm to 6.00 pm

Its tickets must be purchased at the Forest Department booking counter at the Nagarhole National Park or online. These counters open about 30 minutes before the safaris begin, so it is critical to arriving on time to make your reservations.

The Nagarhole National Park is divided into two distinct safari zones: Zone A and Zone B. The Kabini backwaters are close to Zone B. The safari tours offered by Jungle Lodges & Resorts can only visit one of these zones at a time. The Forest Department canter safaris, on the other hand, have unrestricted access to both of these zones.

How to book a Kabini Jungle Safari?

Bookings for both the boat and the vehicular Kabini jungle safari can be made easily through your trippyigloo.com & bookmesafari.com. You can also go on a Kabini jungle safari (on a canter) by visiting the Dammanakatte Forest Department office in Antharasanthe. This office is close to the Kabini forest entrance. To book from there, you will need a valid government ID card.

Additionally, since you can book a Kabini jungle safari online from the comfort of your own home, you won't have to spend any time waiting in lines during the trip and can instead spend it participating in a variety of fun activities while taking in the breathtaking scenery of this Karnataka wonderland.

Conclusion:

Kabini's abundant wildlife provides exceptional game viewing. The variety of options available enhances the beauty of a Kabini safari. The jungle safaris take us deeper into the forest than the boat safaris on the gorgeous backwaters, which only provide an outer view of it. On both safaris, one can see the amazing wildlife in its natural setting.

antharasanthe safari timings

Any person would find going on a Kabini safari to be incredibly exciting and adventurous. There is nothing more enjoyable than spending time in the great outdoors with wildlife and clean air. So don't forget to book your safari and make travel arrangements to Kabini!

Here’s Safari Permit Guide for Nagarhole National Park

By Tushar [27/Nov/23] Nagarahole National Park, located in the southwestern state of Karnataka, India, is a wildlife enthusiast's paradise. Renowned for its rich biodiversity, lush landscapes, and thriving population of diverse flora and fauna, Nagarahole is a must-visit destination for those seeking an immersive safari experience. To make the most of your visit, it's essential to understand the intricacies of obtaining Nagarahole safari permits. Here's your comprehensive guide to navigating the permit process seamlessly.

elephant view nagarahole

1. Types of Safaris: Nagarahole offers two types of safaris - the Jeep Safari and the Elephant Safari. The Jeep Safari is the most popular, allowing visitors to explore the park in open-top vehicles accompanied by trained guides. The Elephant Safari, on the other hand, offers a unique perspective, allowing you to traverse the jungle on the back of a majestic elephant.

2. Booking Procedures: Safari permits for Nagarahole can be obtained online through our website of Nagarhole National Park. It's advisable to book well in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure your preferred safari slot. The booking process is user-friendly, requiring you to provide necessary details such as name, contact information, and the number of individuals in your group.

3. Safari Zones: Nagarahole is divided into different safari zones, each offering a distinct wildlife experience. The primary zones include Kabini, Veeranahosahalli, and Antharasanthe. Research the zones to determine the one that aligns with your wildlife-watching preferences, as each zone has its unique characteristics and animal sightings.

4. Timings and Seasons: Safari timings in Nagarahole vary based on the season. Generally, the park conducts two safaris daily – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. It's essential to check the specific timings for your chosen safari zone and season. The months of October to May are considered the best time to visit, as the weather is pleasant, and the chances of wildlife sightings are higher.

5. Permit Fees: Safari permit fees in Nagarahole are reasonable and vary based on the type of safari, nationality, and age group. Indian citizens, foreign nationals, and children have different fee structures. Ensure you check the current fee schedule before making your booking. Additionally, carry a valid ID proof with you, as it will be required during the safari.

6. Identification and Entry Requirements: To enter Nagarahole National Park, visitors must carry a valid government-issued ID proof, such as a passport, Aadhar card, or driver's license. Make sure you have multiple copies of your ID for submission at the park entrance and during the safari.

7. Rules and Regulations: Abide by the park's rules and regulations to ensure a safe and respectful wildlife experience. Follow the instructions of your safari guide, maintain silence during the safari, and refrain from littering. Keep a safe distance from the animals and avoid any behavior that may disturb the natural habitat.

8. Wildlife Photography: Nagarahole is a haven for wildlife photography enthusiasts. However, it's crucial to respect the guidelines regarding photography. Avoid using flash, do not disturb the animals for a perfect shot, and maintain a reasonable distance to capture the beauty of the wildlife without causing any harm.

In conclusion:

Obtaining Nagarahole safari permits involves a straightforward process, but careful planning is key to a memorable experience. By understanding the booking procedures, safari types, and adhering to park regulations, you can embark on an adventure that allows you to witness the untamed beauty of Nagarahole National Park responsibly

Nagarhole Safari from Kutta Side Gate

We visited Nagarhole and stayed at a Homestay and had booked the Jungle Lodges Open Jeep Safari well in advance in the month of October 2016 for a safari on 25th December. There are 2 safaris - One in the morning and another one at 3:30pm in the evening. We opted for the evening safari since we have kids with us and it is a bit of challenge getting up early in that cold and getting the family ready. The Jeep arrived at the homestay at 3pm sharp. The Jeep is an open one with a capacity of 12 people. We were 4 adults and 2 kids. We boarded the jeep and went to the Kutta side police checkpost where the driver waited for another family of 7 people. Started for the ticket counter which is around 12 kms from the gate. Waited for another 10 minutes there and then started off for the Safari. The jungle is bit dry since we were well towards the end of December. We followed the tyre marked paths in the jungle looking for some animals. We could spot monkeys, lots of spotted deers, Sambars, Langurs, Barking deers, Elephant, Bison, Peacocks, Dholes, Indian Gaurs and some birds. We were not lucky enough to spot any Tiger or Leopard. The safari lasted will 5:30pm when we came back to our homestay and that was the end of our Safari in Nagarhole forest. There is one more entry gate from Kabini which is more popular and preferred by tourists. The changes of tiger sighting is more towards the Kabini side. I would definitely try out the Kabini side backwater safari and jungle safari next time. Overall, it is a OK-OK type Safari and you can enjoy the jungle and animals. Do not expect to spot tigers and feel lucky if you manage to spot one.

antharasanthe safari timings

We went on saturday evening by 3.00 PM since the Park timings is 3.00 to 6 pm but the shock is Safari tickets are already closed and they didnt allowed to the safari counter itself. Many people's are disappointed and went back.We waited and got somehow ticket since all people retured and safari is for half an hour and you can only see Deers and some Bison and one elephant which is very far location to see.If you visted dubare elephant camp and come here u will be greatly disappointed. Moreover Bangalore Bannerghatta forest zoo is 10 times better than Nagahole as u can see Lions,Tigers,Bear..in roads . Only u can satisfy by ride in forest path of greenery like hunsur road.

A well maintained national park...drive through the forest was amazing...enjoyed the drive uptil ticket counter of safari ride it was about a 30 km drive ....safari ride too was gud...but we weren't lucky enough to see tigers,cheetah...etc.. We cud only see various species of Deers, peacock, various species of monkeys...it depends on luck factor 😂..I think u guys should prefer morning ride (6:00am-8:00am) ..u ll hav more chance of of getting glimpse of tigers , cheetah n much more..we went at afternoon...anyways we were happy n enjoyed those beautiful moments..go ahead n njoy ur trip too.. Timings:6am-8:00am 3:00pm-5:00pm

antharasanthe safari timings

We went to orange county kabini from 12.12.16 to 15.12.16.We went to vehicle safari on 13.12.16 in the morning for about 3 hours.Since orange county is on other side of the forest we had to cross river and get into safari vehicle. It was a 18 seater vehicle arranged by jungle lodges. It was raining but still vehicle was covered. The animals were less but still we saw number of elephants.deers ,wild buffelos. It was a good ride in the morning amidst nature.Even going on a safari during rain was experiance. But we could not see any leopards or tigers.Anyway must see in nagarahole .Going in rough and narrow roads could be problem for some without breakfast

Well I had been planning to visit nagarhole for a long time but ultimately I made a visit to this world heritage site in month of december along with my friend. Now having visited 15 wildlife destination in India since last twenty years I was shocked to see the amount of mismanagement inside the park. The biggest minus point of Nagarhole is that they don't take ID's from visitors during safari permits which actually doesn't happen be it in central India or up in north. Secondly Nagarhole has two sides from where one can actually begin their safari ride, one is Kabini in Mysore dist. and other is Hunsur, kutta range in Coorg dist. For prominent sightings of big cats and other mammals Kabini is the best side , but same can't be said to that of Hunsur side. I myself entered through hunsur side though I have got some of brilliant sightings but that was simply a luck factor as my remaining safaris were totally dry as except deer there was hardly anything to shout about. Also most of my sightings did happen on buffer zone as compared to core zone. Nagarhole 's core is a big zero if you compare with other park especially in central India. They are charging 1200 bucks per person for core safari ride and instead if we move through buffer zone on our own then there are every chance that you will see animals free of cost as a part of buffer zone falls in nagarhole waynand highway. Lastly Kabini zone is too costly for a common man to venture and if someone is willing to pay a visit from Mysore then rather having just one game drive he or she has to stay at Kabini river Lodge which charges 9000 per person par night. Now that says all its the lack of professionalism hurting nagarhole. It's a big zero if you compare with kanha, pench,Tadoba,Ranthambore etc. Hugely disappointed....!!!!

antharasanthe safari timings

The bus windows in which we traveled were not clean and were shared between two seats so the person sitting on the inner side would not have a clear view. The roads were good and the forest is dense, looks good. Were able to catch glimpse of whole lot of deers, couple of bisons, peacocks and peahens. We visited in the afternoon. Was disappointed with the bus but the national park is good enough for multiple visits, if you want to catch a glimpse of all animals as luck would have it. Timings are morning 6-8 and afternoon 3-5. Ensure you reach at least 15 mins before. Its almost an hour's drive through the forest for which you are charged Rs. 300 per head.

Safari is open for public holidays also. Those who missed safari can enter forest through Udbur checkpost and drive till Bavali (around 17 kms forest), both 2 and 4 wheeler allowed. SAI SUMANTH 55 months ago Few things I need to be honest here ANTHARASANTHE Forest office ratings is 1 star. But the jungle/nature/wildlife is always 5 star! Now, let me describe my ratings: For a common citizen: 1. You need to be contacting or booking in advance by a day at least 2. You are made to wait 3. You will be put in a bus which basically go on a routine fixed route. You find the animals or not is not the driver's concern 4. You will be put on a bus in which the regular crowd has booked by themselves Now, for the privileged ones: A. Those booked thru resorts B. By connects C. By unofficial method, where no tickets are issued but still the amount is paid You can expect the following 1. You will be ensured some sort of sighting 2. Driver will pull the vehicle aside and wait for a sighting 3. They will interact on communication devices between each other to ensure that you sight something 4. EOD you will not be disappointed NOW THE QUESTION IS - 1. DO YOU WANT TO ENCOURAGE CORRUPTION AS A TOURIST? 2. IF YOU ARE A FOREST OFFICIAL, CAN YOU TAKE SOME ACTION ON THE HAPPENING? 3. YOU DON'T CARE AND ALL YOU WANT IS WHAT YOU WANT AS A TOURIST/PHOTOGRAPHY ENTHUSIAST/AS A HIGHER OFFICIAL?

N.B. The timetable is based on our last updated data on January 26, 2024 .

The Kabini Backwaters Forest Safari is an extremely popular experience conducted by the Karnataka Forest Department in the surreally beautiful Kabini River. There are various lodges and guest houses in the region through which you can enjoy a boat safari at Kabini as well and going on a Kabini safari on a boat in the Kabini river would be the perfect way to admire the lush green surroundings and nearby flora and fauna too.

On the smooth banks of the Kabini River, you may spot a herd of majestic Asiatic elephants peacefully bathing, feeding, having fun, and getting on with their incredible lives. Amongst the plethora of wildlife present on the river banks, you may observe smooth-coated otters playing in the water, marsh crocodiles lazing on the banks, as well as a myriad of ecstatic water birds dipping in and out of the beautiful backwaters.

A boat safari would surely be the most innovative and exciting way to explore the Kabini reserve and absorb its beauty. These safaris are operated by the jungle lodges and resorts of Kabini which are owned by the government of Karnataka. This is the most common and popular way to visit and explore the exceptionally beautiful and lavish forests of Kabini tiger reserve peacefully. You can make either a mini-bus or jeep Kabini safari booking to reach the heart of the forest, and take a wide look at the wilderness from up and close. By going on such a safari, you may get the opportunity to spot various wild animals like majestic tigers, leopards, elephants, and sambar deer, as well as birds like a peacock and crested hawk-eagle as well in the safari.

This jungle safari is controlled by various government authorities and hence, you have to follow certain terms and conditions when going on a Kabini safari like this one. Below are the various vehicle options you can find for the jungle safari and it is important that you carefully check out the details of each of them, and then opt to book the one that perfectly suits your requirements and budget respectively. Jeep Safaris Jeep safaris are operated by jungle lodges and resorts of Kabini itself. Kabini jeep safari booking can be made through the resorts you are staying in if they are associated with the forest department and your resort booking can get you a place on this safari, and its expenses are generally included in the tariff of the safari itself. Mini Bus Safaris Operated by the Forest Department, these are budget-friendly and are the ideal choice for people enjoying their trip with a large group of friends or family members.

The mini-bus safari runs twice each day, and these Kabini safari timings are from 6.30 am to 9.00 am and again in the afternoon from 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm on weekdays and the weekends, there are 4 safaris conducted at 6.00 a.m to 7.30 am, 7.30 am to 9.00 am and 3.00 pm to 4.30 pm, 4:30 pm to 6.00 pm later on in the day respectively. The tickets for these safaris have to be purchased from the Forest Department booking counter present at the Nagarhole National Park or can also be booked online. These counters open about 30 minutes before the start of the safari timings, and hence it is important to be on time to make the bookings for the safaris otherwise you will have to wait in a long queue.

The Nagarhole National Park has two distinctive safari zones which are Zone A and Zone B respectively. Zone B is close to the Kabini backwaters and the safari tours booked through Jungle Lodges and Resorts can cover only one of these zones at a time whereas, on the other hand, the Forest Department safaris enjoy unrestricted access to both of these beautiful zones. You can stay at our resort in Kabini and enjoy these safaris during the daytime. The boat, as well as the vehicular Kabini jungle safari bookings, can be made easily through your resort if you are staying in one of the tourism department lodges during your visit.

Alternatively, you can book your Kabini jungle safari (on a canter) by visiting the Dammanakatte Forest Department office in Antharasanthe in Karnataka. This office is located close to the forest gate of Kabini tiger reserve but you shall need a valid government ID card for verification to make your bookings from here. In recent times, the Forest Department has launched an online booking facility for a Kabini safari at the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve website which is www.nagaraholetigerreserve.com. This Kabini jungle safari online booking facility has become a huge boon for tourists visiting Kabini. For a long time, to book a canter safari, wildlife enthusiasts had to sometimes stand in a huge queue at Damanakatte but now, the online booking facility now allows people to avoid any long queues and enables them to make their bookings within just a few minutes.

Moreover, as you can make Kabini jungle safari online booking right from your home, you do not have to waste a single moment of the tour standing in queues, and shall be able to enjoy your holidays optimally by engaging in diverse and highly exciting activities amidst the enthralling greenery and natural beauty of this surreal wonderland in the state of Karnataka.

Tourists flock Dammanakatte to see tigers, ‘Black Beauty’

Increased demand on weekends and holidays, one more safari trip added

Mysuru: Following increased demand for safari at Dammanakatte Forest amidst Kabini backwaters in Antharasanthe Forest Range of Nagarahole National Park, the Forest Department has included one additional safari trip on weekends and holidays.

The existing safari timings have been restricted to one-and-a-half hours and an additional safari slot has been created to handle the tourist rush. There are only three mini buses that go on safari at Dammanakatte forests and of them, one is a 20-seater and two are 27-seater buses.

Of late, tigers and black leopard that is nicknamed “Black Beauty” have been frequently sighted at Hulikere, Hosa Kere and Nayanjikatte areas. Also there are multiple elephant herds roaming and grazing around in Kabini backwaters greenery. This has made tourists and wildlife enthusiasts to make a beeline to Dammanakatte to catch a glimpse of animals in their natural habitat.

Forest Department officials told Star of Mysore that the black leopard (Black Beauty) is about six to seven-years-old and has been living in Kabini backwaters territory since 2014.

This feline is one of the most photographed animals in Nagarahole National Park. The ‘Black Beauty’ has multiple female partners spread across its territory. Unlike other leopards that are shy and elusive, this feline often gives a glimpse to tourists who flock Nagarahole.

Safari Charges

On holidays and weekends, tourists can take the one-and-a-half hour safari at 6 am, 7.30 am, 9 am, 3 pm and 4.30 pm. Rs. 500 has to be paid as safari charges and for children, it is fixed at Rs. 250.

Foreigners have to pay Rs. 1,600 and their children have to pay Rs. 800 per safari trip, said the Department officials.
