20 of the best Norwegian fjords cruises

Norway is a place of staggering natural beauty, from fjords and snow-capped peaks to the northern lights. these are the voyages and cruise lines that showcase them best.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

N orway has the world’s largest concentration of fjords — as well some of the biggest and deepest. These natural marvels were carved out when Ice Age glaciers retreated and created an awe-inspiring contrast of snowy mountain peaks and sheer rock faces plunging into clear azure waters. Norway is also prime territory to spy the northern lights dancing across the polar sky and, come summer, experience the round-the-clock daylight of the midnight sun. Accommodation and food is pricey here, so a holiday afloat will keep costs down and you’ve got plenty of cruise lines to choose from. Here are some of the best.

1. Hurtigruten

Hurtigruten is a pioneer of cruising the Norwegian fjords. Its history goes back to 1893 when the company was founded to provide a daily passenger service for locals and deliver freight to inaccessible towns and villages along the length of the coast. These days the 11-night original route, from Bergen to Kirkenes, is available on passenger vessels, with the voyage passing about 100 fjords with 34 stops along the way. Ships hug the coastline so there’s always something to see and, on selected sailings, Hurtigruten’s northern lights promise means you get another sailing for free if the aurora borealis don’t put on a show.

Saga’s Spirit of Adventure

2. Saga Cruises

Saga’s two 999-passenger ships, Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery, get brownie points for their size; they’re small enough to dock at towns and quays that larger vessels simply can’t reach. The adult-only line’s fjords cruises include overnight stays in towns such as Flam and Geiranger, providing plenty of time for excursions — one being a trip on the Flamsbana Railway, which is one of the steepest in the world. Dedicated northern lights sailings visit at peak time and shore tours seek out viewing spots that provide the best chance of seeing them.

The 228-passenger vessels combine all the trappings of luxury with the thrill of expedition sailing in Norway. Soar above cascading waterfalls in one of the two onboard helicopters or dip underwater to get a different perspective of the fjords from the Scenic Neptune submarine, which can carry six passengers and dive to depths of nearly 300m (1,000ft). Back on the ship, chill out in the champagne bar or back in your spacious suite — some have private hot tubs.

Fred Olsen’s Balmoral in Olden

4. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines

This line is a natural choice for a fjords itinerary just as it was in 1848 when the Olsen family started sailing commercial ships in their homeland. The Olsen Art Studio has been introduced on the latest ships in the fleet, Borealis and Bolette, and they’re used for classes such as painting the northern lights. Fred Olsen’s smaller ships are perfectly proportioned for navigating the narrow waterways, and passengers can get even closer to the scenery with an exhilarating ride on the inflatable RIB boats, now carried on all of its vessels.

A Viking cruise at the Seven Sisters waterfall in Geirangerfjord

As its name suggests, this is another line with a Scandinavian pedigree. Viking’s carefully curated Norway cruises feature longer port calls and overnight stays that take advantage of the midnight sun in summertime and northern lights-spotting opportunities in winter. The fleet of near-identical adult-only ships all feature a Mamsen’s restaurant, named in honour of owner Tor Hagen’s mother. The 14-night Iceland & Norway’s Arctic Explorer itinerary crosses the Arctic Circle to visit the far north.

6. Holland America Line

The Unesco-listed landscape of Geirangerfjord is lined with dramatic waterfalls and it winds for nine miles, plunging to depths of 500m (1,640ft). You can see it in style from the decks or balconies on Holland America Line’s new music-themed, 2,668-passenger flagship Rotterdam — the seventh vessel to bear the historic name for Holland America — with itineraries that include midnight sun sailings. Shore trips include Eidfjord, with the chance to go kayaking or sit back and enjoy a scenic drive to a cider and apple brandy factory.

After a bow-to-stern renovation on Windstar’s all-suite 312-guest Star Legend, passengers can now glide through the fjords in refined comfort. Kayaking, biking, walking and small-boat excursions are among the options to fill your lungs with fresh Norwegian air. View one of the country’s most famous landmarks, Preikestolen or Pulpit Rock, on an RIB excursion along the Lysefjord. Look out for sea eagles, seals or porpoises before gazing at the vertiginous rock that projects out from the rock face 600m (1,969ft) above the fjord.

This cruise line gives you the chance to join a National Geographic photographer and get tips on taking the best snaps on shore tours and in the onboard photo workshop. Begin by focusing on the Crayola-coloured wooden houses in Bergen — the starting point for sailings that follow the fjords to Tromso on the 126-passenger Endurance, the first polar-class new-build ship in the company’s history, or Resolution. Upmarket Cunard is renowned for cultural immersion. Sailings are available on Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2, including a week-long Southampton round-trip fjords itinerary. Sky Princess (Alamy)

13. Princess Cruises

Princess has round-trip sailings from Southampton on its cruise ships Sky Princess and Island Princess, with a range of quirky excursions. Our favourite? The chance to take a leisurely walk with llamas through fjord meadows. You’ll wander from the hamlet of Skjolden and follow trails set against a backdrop of some of the highest peaks in Europe. For something more conventional, there’s a stroll around Unesco-world heritage Bryggen, a medieval port founded by wealthy merchants and lined with paintbox-coloured wooden buildings.

14. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian’s latest vessel is a Prima Class ship carrying 3,215 passengers. Features include infinity pools and a glass-walled sauna in the outdoor spa — the perfect hot spot to watch the cool passing scenery. It will sail to Norway and its 2023 itineraries will also feature sailings from Southampton. Stops are set to include the coastal village of Maloy, a mile-long silver sand beach that’s considered one of the most stirring places in Norway to brave a bracing plunge.

An innovative feature on this ship is the Magic Carpet, a glass-sided cantilevered platform projecting from the side of the vessel that can be raised up and down between different decks and is variously used as a bar and restaurant. Alternatively, sail out of Southampton on round-trip Norwegian cruises on Celebrity Silhouette. Both vessels feature The Retreat, an exclusive area for suite passengers, with its own sun deck, restaurant and lounge.

Havila mirrors Hurtigruten and carries cruise passengers and locals between Bergen and Kirkenes on eco-friendly ships that can sail for up to four hours on battery power. New Norwegian Fjords Cruise Review with Princess

A cruise to the Norwegian Fjords is guaranteed to offer breathtaking scenery with the chance to visit picturesque ports of call. In this post I share my Norwegian Fjords cruise review , including things to do in port and advice to help you make the most of a Norway cruise.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise Review on Sky Princess

We took a 7-night cruise on Sky Princess from Southampton in April. It wasn’t our first cruise on this ship, having taken a 4-night ‘seacation’ the previous year. It was good to sail on her again and spend more time enjoying the ship’s restaurants, venues and public areas.

Sky Princess Piazza atrium

Many major cruise lines offer ocean cruises to Norway so it’s worth checking the cruise itineraries and onboard facilities:

  • P&O Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Princess Cruises
  • Viking Cruises

Which type of cabin should you book for a Norwegian Fjords cruise?

We opted for a balcony stateroom for this cruise trip because we wanted to ensure that we could take in the Fjords of Norway in the mornings as we sailed into the destinations. This was a really good decision as on most port days, the ship travelled up the Fjords early in the morning. As the Fjords were the main reason we booked this cruise it made sense to choose a balcony cabin.

We used our balcony in the mornings and evenings to make the most of the scenic cruising along the coast of Norway.

Norwegian Fjords cruise review

It was a bit chilly at times but Princess Cruises offered guests warm blankets we could use on the balcony and the top deck.

It’s definitely worth spending a little more for a balcony. In an inside cabin you must go to the outside decks to check the weather and to see the incredible views. As we cruised in April, outside of peak season, the price difference between an inside and balcony was minimal. For the best deals, I’d recommend looking at Norwegian Fjord cruises at the start or end of the peak season (April or September).

For unobstructed views, the ultimate room option would be a Sky Suite on Sky Princess . We were fortunate to stay in one on our previous cruise and enjoy the biggest balcony at sea. I’d recommend taking a look at my video tour and review to see if it’s for you.

What’s the best month to take a Norwegian Fjords cruise?

The main season for Norwegian Fjords cruises from the U.K. is April to September when the weather is the warmest. During this time of year you can expect more daylight hours and spectacular waterfalls as the snow and ice melts.

During the summer months of June, July and August you can expect to experience long days and a midnight sun.

Norway waterfall

You can cruise to Norway during the winter months with cruise lines such as Hurtigruten, which have smaller ships. During the colder months from October to February, you have a chance to see the Northern Lights . The best chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis is in September and March. The sun sets much earlier in the winter, so there are less daylight hours, especially if your cruise takes you to the Arctic Circle.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise Review – Itinerary

Our 7-night cruise itinerary included two sea days and four port days. This was a good balance and gave us time to relax and enjoy the ship as well as visit the ports of call.

Day 1: Embarkation in Southampton

Day 2: Sea day

Day 3: Bergen

Day 4: Skjolden

Day 5: Olden

Day 6: Stavanger

Day 7: Sea day

We were a bit nervous about the conditions in the North Sea but it was surprisingly calm. Before the cruise I’d heard it can be quite rough seas but we were very lucky. I always take Dramamine with me in case I feel seasick.

Our first port of call was Bergen. It’s a good idea to head up to the outside decks during the approach for the best views. We were woken in the morning by the ship’s fog horn but as we neared Bergen the skies cleared and we enjoyed good weather for the rest of the day.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Bergen is known as the capital of the Fjords and has a population of approximately 286,000. Despite this, it still has a small town feel and is easily walkable. It is said to rain in Bergen 300 days a year so we were particularly blessed with clear skies and sunshine.

In Bergen, we chose to take the Fløibanen funicular railway to the summit of Mount Fløyen so we could admire the view of the city. We booked our tickets in advance before the cruise via the Fløibanen website. This allowed us to skip the queue for tickets and get straight on the funicular.

Tickets were around £12 per person return and there was no need to arrive for a particular time slot. The funicular is a short walk of around 15 minutes from Bergen cruise port and is well signposted.

If you’re comfortable in booking trips and excursions independently, this is definitely the best way to do it. It’s easy to find and you’ll save so much money. Our friends booked a cruise excursion to the funicular that included a short coach tour, which came to $100 per person!

The funicular in Bergen can get quite busy, especially because it’s a popular thing to do with cruise passengers. I’d recommend going there first to avoid large queues.

Bergen Norwegian Fjords cruise port

On a clear day, the views of Bergen from Mount Fløyen are pretty special and you can easily spend an hour or two at the summit, admiring the scenery. There are a couple of cafes and a gift shop as well as a resident herd of goats. If you want to walk down the mountain on foot there is a path that takes you through the woods.

In the afternoon, we decided to take a walk through Bryggen , which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 3 minutes from the funicular railway.

Bryggen Norwegian fjords cruise

Bryggen (the dock) is an area of wooden buildings originally built for Hanseatic League commercial purposes. It’s now used for shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. Sadly, Bryggen has suffered many fires over the years and so the buildings are not original but some still date back to the 1700s. You can wander the warren of tiny streets and imagine what life was like when Bergen was a major trading port.

Bryggen in Bergen

On the dock front, there are plenty of places to stop for lunch and a drink and that’s exactly what we decided to do. The sunshine allowed us to dine outside at Madamfelle, also a live music venue, and it was a pleasant place to do a spot of people watching.

I ordered a Bergen fish soup for 119kr (approximately £10) as I wanted to try the local food but the restaurant also offered a wide range of other dishes including burgers, tacos, chicken wings and steaks. A word of warning, food and drink in Norway can be expensive and the beer in particular is very pricey. A small beer was £10 and a pint was £12.30!

things to eat in Bergen

After some time in Bryggen, we took a leisurely stroll back to the cruise ship.

Overall, I thought Bergen was a great port of call and I’d happily return to spend more time there. It was a very friendly city and so easy to explore independently.

Songnefjord and Skjolden

The next morning I decided to get up early to witness the journey through Sognefjord , the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. 5.00am seemed very early but it was the best time to view the sunrise over the fjord and I joined a small number of fellow passengers who had the same idea.

I decided the best place to see this scenic fjord was at the aft of the ship as I could see both port and starboard views on our approach. It was a magical time of day and definitely a bucket list moment.

Norwegian Fjords cruise

I saw waterfalls, snow capped mountains and tiny wooden houses on the hillsides on our way to Skjolden. It was very cold at this time of day so I would definitely recommend grabbing a hot drink on your way to the top decks and wearing warm clothing.

Waterfall Sognefjord

If you don’t feel like getting up so early on your cruise, the good news is that you will do the same journey out of the fjord at the end of the day. The majority of passengers chose to do this as we left Skjolden.

Skjolden is a tiny village at the end of Songnefjord with a population of around 200 people. Most cruise passengers had shore excursions booked at this port and headed off on coach trips to see the mountains, glacier or take a walk with llamas. There were rib rides and standup paddle boards available to hire and we spotted these on our short walk to the village.

We had no plans in Skjolden as we’d attempted to pre-book some bikes in advance of the cruise but found most tourism businesses were closed until May. It’s worth knowing this if you are planning a Norwegian Fjords cruise in April.

Skjolden Norwegian fjords cruise review destination

We decided to take a short walk, which quickly turned into a long walk as we spotted a signpost to the Asafossen Waterfall . The walk was flat and took us past the Eidsvatnet Lake and through a footpath still thick with snow. The 180 metre waterfall is situated opposite a small campsite and ‘The Hand’.

Asafossen waterfall things to do in skjolden

The Hand is a wooden sculpture created in honour of a famous Austrian philosopher called Ludwig Wittgenstein , who chose to spend time in Skjolden for its peacefully environment whilst he took time to think and philosophise. He came from a rich family but decided to give away his inheritance and live a simple life to focus on philosophy.

He designed and built a small wooden cottage on a remote rock overlooking the Eidsvatnet Lake . After a wrong turn, we found ourselves at the foot of the path to his cottage so decided to go for a closer look. This walk is not for the faint-hearted and I was very glad of the ropes that were located toward the top of the climb. It was very steep and it took a few minutes to catch my breath when I reached the top.

Wittgenstein's Cottage Sjolden things to do

I could definitely see why he’d chosen to build his cottage in this spot as the view over the lake was beautiful and the climb up ensured he was not bothered by visitors!

After that little adventure, we decided to head back towards the ship and grab a late lunch on the Lido Deck. Many cruisers were already back onboard enjoying the sunshine in the swimming pools and hot tubs. Some were even in their swimming costumes sunbathing!

Sky Princess norwegian fjords cruis review

For the sailaway we took position towards the aft and admired Songnefjord as we waved goodbye to the little village of Skjolden.

If we were to visit Skjolden again, I’d be inclined to book a shore excursion or hire a bike. Although it’s a nice place to explore on foot, there’s limited things to see and do beyond the walk we took.

Our third port of call was Olden , a small village with breathtaking scenery, even from the cruise port.

We had booked a morning excursion to the Briksdal Glacier , which involved a short coach journey to the starting point in the Jostedal Glacier National Park. We passed some stunningly glass-like lakes on the way and so I’d highly recommend sitting on the right side of the coach if you want to get the best views of them.

The Briksdal Glacier is the largest in mainland Europe and on this trip we were able to see one of the glacier arms.

I’d bought some walking boots in advance of this excursion but after listening to the onboard port talk, decided to wear my comfortable trainers as the walk seemed quite gentle. The steepest section of the walk was at the beginning but there were waterfalls we could stop and admire on the way.

waterfall briksdal glacier

Troll cars are available to hire for an extra charge for anyone who doesn’t want to walk. They didn’t seem to stop when going past the waterfalls. A ride in a troll car costs 250kr (£21.10) return or 150kr (12.66) one way and can be booked in advance or when you arrive depending on availability.

Along the trail to the glacier, there were information boards to show how environmental impacts have caused the glacier to retreat over time. Sadly, I fear that in years to come the glacier will continue to shrink. I’m just glad I was able to experience it now before it disappears out of sight.

Norwegian Fjords cruise excursion to Briksdal Glacier

I enjoyed this excursion as we were given free time. There was no guide we had to follow and we could simply go at our own pace without being herded. We had enough time at the glacier and once we’d returned to the starting point, coffee and cake had been arranged. We enjoyed a well-deserved rest before making our way back by coach to the cruise port.

Around the small cruise port in Olden there is little in the way of shops and cafes but it was a pleasant day to take a stroll. The natural scenery is Olden’s best asset and there is really no need for much more here.

Our sailaway from Olden was particularly memorable as the bar on the quay treated us to a musical send off with a playlist that included ‘Sailing’ by Rod Stewart, ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman and ‘Rocking All Over the World’ by Status Quo. Local people stood outside in their gardens and on their balconies waving goodbye. At this point we were treated to Princess Cruises’ iconic Love Boat horn , which made it even more special.

View from the cruise ship in Olden

Our final port of call was Stavanger , a small city located in Southern Norway. It’s well-known for its Canning Factory Museum and Petroleum Museum but as none of these appealed to us we chose to explore the local area on foot. I’d stood on our balcony when we’d arrived and thought today was the day I didn’t need to wear a coat but unfortunately, after 15 minutes of being on land it started to rain!

We headed to Øvre Holmegate , a colourful street filled with bars and cafes, to get a hot drink and some shelter. This whole neighbourhood is very cheerful with its brightly decorated buildings and when the rain had passed it was a nice place to while away some time.

norwegian cruise port of stavanger Øvre Holmegate

Unless you have booked an excursion in Stavanger or want to visit the museums, it’s difficult to spend a full day in port.

One thing that is interesting to look out for is the street art that is dotted around the city. You can also spend some time in the Old Town ( Gamle Stavanger ) that is right next to the cruise port. It’s an area of white wooden houses and cobbled streets dating back to the 18th Century that have been perfectly preserved.

What currency do you need for a Norwegian Fjords cruise?

Norway doesn’t accept Euros and so you should consider taking Norwegian Krone (plural Kroner) and a credit card that is suitable to use abroad. We use a Halifax Clarity credit card because it allows us to pay in foreign currency with no exchange fee and use ATMs with no additional fees.

Everywhere we visited accepted card payments so it’s one of the easiest ways to pay when in Norway.

Because Princess Cruises operates in U.S. Dollars we also took a small amount to tip staff.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise Review – Onboard Experience

Having cruised on Sky Princess previously, we were looking forward to spending more time onboard. We decided to pay for Princess Plus , which includes the drinks package, Wi-Fi and crew incentives (gratuities) so there was little else to worry about once we were onboard.

Medallion app

The introduction of the OceanMedallion and MedallionNet had the promise of being able to order food and drink via an app from anywhere on the ship and the ‘best Wi-Fi at sea’ but this seemed to become almost non-existent from our first sea day onwards.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

On the first sea day, the weather meant that most cruise passengers were attempting to find places inside to sit and order drinks but this compounded the issue as the reduced crew tried to cope with the huge number of orders coming in.

After a 25-minute queue at the International Cafe and several failed attempts to order via the app we resided ourselves to the fact that we wouldn’t be making much use of the drinks package that day. Even ordering from the stateroom TV didn’t help matters.

It’s also important to point out in this Norwegian Fjords cruise review that this was the first cruise with Princess where we’d experienced people queuing for everything.

The Medallion app continued to be unresponsive for the remainder of the cruise until the last day, when a crew member on Guest Services changed some of the settings on my iPhone. It was a disappointment as the technology worked so well the last time we were onboard.

After enquiring at the Internet Cafe and Guest Services it appeared to be an issue that Princess Cruises was fully aware of. We were told it was in communication with the software company to try to rectify the problems.

One loophole that we noticed during our cruise was when ordering drinks with the crew. The Medallion was not used at all and we were just asked for our cabin number. This meant that you could give any cabin number you liked when ordering a drink and there was no failsafe. On one occasion, we accidentally gave the wrong room number and were told it didn’t matter because that room had the drinks package too!

Regardless of the Medallion app issues you are unlikely to get good use of the MedallionNet Wi-Fi due to the geographical location of a Norwegian Fjords cruise. Coverage is lower in this region but if you know in advance not to expect much, anything you do get is a bonus.

The Wi-Fi on land is excellent so as soon as your ship docks you can access 4G if your phone contract allows. Three Mobile seems to provide the best coverage in its roaming package and therefore there are no additional charges.

Princess Crew

I couldn’t write this Norwegian Fjords cruise review without mentioning the staff onboard our ship. The Princess Cruises’ staff members were, as always, so friendly and helpful despite greater work pressures during our cruise. They all worked so hard with the additional restrictions of KN95 face masks that they wore at all times, even in port in their own time.

It’s understandable that Princess Cruises is doing everything possible to minimise the spread of infections and we felt completely safe at all times throughout the cruise.

Our cabin stewards were so helpful and it was a shame that we didn’t get to see our first steward at the end of the cruise after he was sent on ‘training’. We did wonder if this was a code word for something else…

Food and Restaurants on Sky Princess

The food onboard was good quality and my new favourite place to grab lunch is the Salty Dog Grill on the Lido Deck. It offers, burgers, hot dogs, loaded fries and tacos all freshly cooked to order.

For breakfast, we ate in the buffet, the Main Dining Room and ordered room service. The breakfast in the Dining Room was particularly pleasant and such a nice way to start the day. You definitely had to pick your times in the buffet in the mornings as quite a few people headed there. Especially if they couldn’t get into the dining room.

Room service on Princess cruise ships is complimentary and it arrived during the time we’d requested, which was fantastic. You may wish to consider ordering breakfast to your cabin on mornings when you want to save time or enjoy the views from your balcony.

Dinner in the Main Dining Room was good and our favourite meal was enjoyed on the second formal night. We particularly enjoyed the lobster tails and one of Princess Cruises’ classics – creme brûlée.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Having eaten in all three specialty restaurants on our previous cruise we decided to go back to our favourite – Sabatini’s . This is the Italian restaurant onboard with a $25 cover charge. We managed to get a table next to a window to enjoy the sea views and couldn’t fault the food and service. It was the quietest specialty restaurant on our cruise, which surprised me as the meal was exceptional.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

I’d recommend reading my blog posts about the other specialty restaurants ( Crown Grill and Bistro Sur La Mer ). I’d definitely recommend booking these in advance to avoid disappointment.

Take a look at my useful guide to specialty dining on Sky Princess .

You should not miss a meal in Alfredo’s , the complimentary pizza restaurant that also offers salads, soup and pasta. It’s a popular choice for lunch but quieter during the evenings when most people eat in the Main Dining Rooms. The pizza is made to order in an open kitchen complete with pizza oven and the food was excellent.

Alfredo's Pizza on Sky Princess

On this cruise we finally decided to make the effort to go to Afternoon Tea in the Estrella Dining Room. This is complimentary and includes small sandwiches, cake, scones and tea. In all honesty is was OK and we’d probably not rush back but at least we gave it a try.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise Review – Entertainment

On our cruise, there was plenty of entertainment in the main venues of Sky Princess throughout the day and evening. We particularly enjoyed a violin duo who played in various places including the Piazza .

Generally, we prefer a bit of background music so we can sit and chat but we did enjoy a couple of different bands that played in the Piazza and Vista Lounge .

A new venue we spent some time in was Take Five , which is a jazz-themed lounge that replaced Crooners. Crooners was a favourite venue amongst Princess cruisers but to honest we much preferred this venue. Seating was limited so it was rare that we found a spot but it was a nice place to spend some time when we could.

Being a colder cruise, Movies Under the Stars still screened films but we didn’t brave the evening temperatures. The Bridge Cam was shown on the big screen so people could sit on their sunbeds and watch the sailaway (although we much preferred to see it ourselves on Deck 17 and 18).

Although we never spent any time in Princess Live! we noticed that there was always something going on there and seemed to be a vary versatile venue. There was ballroom dancing, quizzes, games, beauty demonstrations and art auctions. We preferred the Crown Grill bar that had comfy seats and a nice drinks menu.

The Princess Theater hosted nightly shows and I can highly recommend Rock Opera , which is my favourite show on Princess Cruises. There was a comedian who we’d enjoyed on our previous cruise and he certainly made the audience laugh. 5 Skies is the other big show currently on Sky Princess.

What to wear on a Norwegian Fjords cruise

Choosing what to wear for this type of cruise can be tricky as you need to pack for all weathers. During the day we wore jeans, t-shirts, jumpers and coats. In the evenings, we wore smart casual outfits and two formal outfits.

what to wear on a Norwegian Fjords cruise

The level of formal wear was quite diverse on this cruise. People wore dinner jackets and sequinned long dresses to colourful dresses, smart trousers and a shirt. You can find the formal dress code for Princess Cruises here .

Some people chose not to dress up on formal night, which is totally fine to dine in the casual restaurants. It’s your cruise holiday and you can dress up as much or as little as you feel comfortable.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise Review – Final Thoughts

This was our first cruise to Norway and after hearing so much about the Norwegian Fjords, the destinations still surpassed my expectations.

Getting up early to experience the Fjords at sunrise was very special and I’d urge you to do it if you can.

I’ve tried to be as honest as possible in this Norwegian Fjords cruise review in order to share a true reflection of our cruise. The cruise was by no means perfect but we still enjoyed our time away and the stunning scenery we were treated to.

Having taken a river cruise a few years ago, this fjords cruise does have some similarities. If you enjoy the scenic cruising and smaller destinations a Norwegian Fjords cruise offers, I’d suggest considering river cruises.

Our favourite things from this cruise were:

  • Being able to walk off the ship into the villages, towns and cities (another similarity to river cruises)
  • Waking up to see the fjords from our balcony
  • The warm welcome from local people in Norway
  • The stunning scenery in the cruise ports
  • The weather in April was surprisingly good
  • The variety of entertainment venues on the cruise ship
  • The friendly and helpful crew on Sky Princess
  • Our meal at Sabatini’s specialty restaurant
  • Breakfast in the Main Dining Room
  • The Princess Cruises cocktail menu offered so much choice
  • The Salty Dog Grill for quick lunches

I hope you’ve found my Norwegian Fjords cruise review useful. If you have any questions about the cruise, destinations or ship, feel free to pop them in the comments section.

Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise Holidays

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Slowly but surely, Norway is becoming a year round cruising destination. With the soaring interest in winter cruising to see the famous Northern Lights adding to the already large number of cruise ships sailing the waters of summertime Norway, the country is in itself one truly amazing, scenic smorgasbord that everyone should experience at least once in a lifetime.

Sights to see

Useful information.

In downtown, bustling Bergen, the view down over the harbour from the top of the funicular is incomparable during daylight. In that same city, a walk among the ancient, clapboard shops and restaurants of the waterfront Bryggen district offers a glimpse into how people traded back in the fourteenth century.

In stunning, secluded Flam, take the train to the summit at Myrdal, as it winds through a landscape of pastures full of cows that gives way to dramatic, plunging ravines and fierce, tumbling waterfalls. The journey is rated as one of the most spectacular in the world, and with very good reason.

If the chance arises- and it mainly does on winter cruises- I definitely recommend that you try a sleigh ride under the stars. The two man wooden sleds, each hauled by a team of eight Arctic Huskies, shudder, swoosh and swerve through an amazing twilight hinterland, across a sea of snow bracketed by looming pine trees. Often as not, your gaze is fixed on a sky full of stars but, if you are lucky, there is a good chance to see the flickering, enigmatic, shimmering Northern Lights.

In terms of food, Norwegian cuisine tends to be simple, fresh and devoid of pretension. The local fish- typically Norwegian Salmon and, further north, Arctic Char, require little by way of sauce for emphasis. With the water in the local fjords so clear and pristine, the taste and texture of fish served here is amazing.

For meat lovers, the reindeer is usually superb, if sometimes a little salty. And for dessert, try the locally picked cloudberries. They usually come with whipped cream, and form a welcome, sharp contrast to the main course.

Remember that in terms of local prices, Norway is jaw dropping compared to the UK. Everything from beer, to coffee, to bottled water costs many times more than at home, so budget accordingly. Many of the local souvenirs, such as reindeer pelts, woollen mittens and hats, are of absolutely superb quality, but inevitably they come at a matching price.

Cruising through a glistening inland waterway surrounded by soaring cliffs and cascading waterfalls with snow-covered peaks in the background is one of those experiences that can take your breath away—and that will leave you feeling deeply humbled by the glory of Mother Nature. Having such an awe-inspiring encounter is what draws travelers to remote corners of the world for fjord cruises.

Whether you are visiting the UNESCO World Heritage-protected fjords of Norway, New Zealand’s Milford Sound, the icy Chilean fjords or other destinations around the globe that are known for these ancient, submerged valleys, be prepared for truly dramatic views. And you can expect more than just a superficial glance at the natural phenomena. Cruises that explore fjords allow passengers to go even deeper and offer unique perspectives with intimate excursions on kayaks or inflatable Zodiac craft, or by catching a birds-eye views from above via helicopter, train rides, or mountain hikes.

Here are some of the world’s most spectacular fjords and the cruise ships that will get you there in comfort and style.

Cruises amid the vast wilderness of Alaska’s Inside Passage bring access to calving glaciers at the head of stunning fjords, whether the ship visits Glacier Bay, College Fjord or Tracy Arm. For sailings that embarks from Seward, plan to overnight so that you can board a small boat to tour Kenai Fjords National Park, with its coastal fjords, islands, glaciers, and prolific marine life—including whales and playful sea otters. Misty Fjords National Monument, visited by small ships and accessible via shore excursions, is the gold standard of Alaskan fjords, a magical, often misty place that involves sailing along icy blue water through the narrow glacier-formed passageways flanked by sheer, 3,000-foot cliffs, tall cascading waterfalls, and dense temperate forest.

Alaska fjord cruises

UnCruise Adventures visits Misty Fjords on its Alaska Fjords & Glaciers itinerary on the 60-passenger Wilderness Adventurer , 74-passenger Wilderness Explorer and 76-passenger Wilderness Discoverer , with fares from $4,800 per person for a seven-night sailing from Juneau or Ketchikan.

a group of Magellanic penguins walking in Chile

Not only are the fjords beautiful in Chile but some of the local residents are downright adorable, like these Magellanic penguins.

South America’s Chilean fjords stretch some 1,000 miles along the southwest coast of Chile through Patagonia, starting at Cape Horn. They are famous for blue-tinged glaciers, icebergs, the rugged Andes mountains and pristine wilderness. The most well-known of the steep-walled fjords is the narrow Garabaldi Fjord, with glaciers as high as skyscrapers. The remote village of Tortel, entirely built on stilts, is visited on itineraries in the region. Wildlife sights include Andean Condors, among the largest birds in the world, along with Magellanic penguins and orca and humpback whales.

Chile fjord cruises

Ships that visit include large vessels from Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises and smaller ships from lines such as Azamara , Lindblad Expeditions , Silversea and Viking . French line Ponant offers a 14-night cruise in February 2024 on the 264-passenger L’Austral that will sail roundtrip from Ushuaia, Argentina; fares from $11,250 per person.

Tina Rolf/Unsplash

The island country of Greenland is home to some 1,200 fjords. On the west coast, the Illulissat Icefjord, which is approximately 25 miles long, has come to serve as a harsh reminder of the realities of global warming, home to giant icebergs that have broken off the fast-moving Greenland ice sheet. The east coast of Greenland has the distinction of having the world’s longest fjord system, Scoresby Sund, with one steep-walled branch that is more than 200 miles long. Adventure cruise lines such as Quark, Hurtigruten and Aurora Expeditions all explore the vast wilderness and fjord systems of this remote destination.

Greenland fjord cruises

Aurora Expeditions has a new 13-night East Greenland Explorer itinerary in the rugged and dramatic landscapes in northeast Greenland that sets sail in August 2023, with fares from $12,415 per person. The cruise is roundtrip from the Icelandic capital of Reykjavík, on the 132-passenger Greg Mortimer . Stops include the tiny Inuit town of Ittoqqortoormiit, population approximately 350, and the goal is visiting the northernmost point in Greenland.

Dynjandi waterfall in the Westfjords of Iceland

Sail to the more remote Westfjords of Iceland where natural wonders such as the Dynjandi waterfall await—with much fewer crowds.

In the Northeast Atlantic, Iceland boasts 109 fjords and visiting them on cruise ship offers one of the best vantage points for seeing them. Charming fishing villages such as Seydisfjordur, with its colorful wooden homes, are often located at the head of some of these cliff-lined waterways —the Vikings having sought such isolated and protected locations for their communities. A circumnavigation of Iceland, roundtrip from Reykjavík, gives passengers the opportunity to compare the fjords of the east, backed by green hills and snow-capped peaks, to the vast and rugged dramatic cliffs and flat-top mountains of the less-populated Westfjords. In both cases, roaring waterfalls add to the dramatic natural scenery. Among the wildlife attractions are the eternally popular puffins as well as whales.

Iceland fjord cruises

Luxury line Seabourn will sail an 11-night circumnavigation of Iceland on the 264-passenger expedition ship Seabourn Venture in July 2024, with fares from $11,499 per person. For an extra fee, go below the surface of Grundarfjordur on the north coast and Papey Island in the east on one of the ship’s two custom-built six-passenger submarines.

Milford Sound in New Zealand

A peak draw on any fjord-driven sailing in New Zealand is the stunning Milford Sound.

New Zealand

The famed Milford Sound is a pristine, ice-carved fjord, nearly 10 miles long that cuts through steep cliffs in New Zealand’s southwestern Fiordland National Park. English novelist Rudyard Kipling referred to the waterway as “the eighth wonder of the world.” Lush rainforests, impressive peaks, and close-up views of big waterfalls are among the natural bounty of this stunning environment. Passengers might see bottlenose and dusky dolphins following their ship and may be able to spot Kea, the world’s only alpine parrots. Fair warning, however, that the weather does not always cooperate. If the fjord is a must-see, consider booking an overnight excursion to improve your chances of viewing it.

New Zealand fjord cruises

For its late 2023 and early 2024 season, Celebrity Cruises visits Milford Sound on 12-night sailings between Auckland and Sydney on the decked-out, 2,908- passenger Celebrity Edge , with fares from $2,000 per person. For $699 per person, you can add a Queensland overnight (during which passengers leave the ship in Dunedin and rejoin at Milford Sound).

Geirangerfjord Norway

UNESCO-recognized Geirangerfjord is one of Norway’s fjord stunners.

Jesse de Backer/Unsplash

Norway abounds in stunning fjords—more than 1,000 in total—with cruise ships bringing you up close for spectacular views. The crown jewels are the UNESCO-recognized Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord in southwestern Norway, part of a landscape of fjords that encompasses more than 310 square miles, with cliffs rising as high as nearly 4,600 feet accentuated by stunning waterfalls, lush green coniferous forests, dramatic snow-capped peaks, and glaciers. Some 130 cruise ships visit every year, bringing passengers to some of the longest, deepest, and most beautiful fjords in the world. Visit in winter when you have a good chance of catching the Northern Lights, too, or in the summer when the Midnight Sun shines for nearly round-the-clock views.

Norwegian fjord cruises

A classic Norwegian experience is doing all or part of an 11-night, 2,500-mile circuit with Hurtigruten’s Norwegian Coastal Express , an itinerary that features stops in 34 ports between Bergen and Kirkenes. Hurtigruten has deep roots in Norway—it’s celebrating its 130 th anniversary in 2023. Roundtrip fares are from $2,309 per person; and six-night sailings are from $1,600 per person.

Fråm Railway train in Norway passing along beautiful fjord mountains, meadows and waterfall

On Viking’s Grand Fjords & Iconic Viking Shores itinerary, you can get a different view of Norway’s fjords from the Fråm Railway.

Multi-country fjord cruises

For those who can’t decide between fjord destinations, consider a multi-country cruise. For instance, Viking combines seven countries in its new Grand Fjords & Iconic Viking Shores itinerary , which sails between Amsterdam and New York on the 930-passenger Viking Star or sister ship Viking Neptune . Passengers will stop in the quaint Danish fishing village of Skagen, and will have ample opportunity to explore Norway, including the natural beauty of Geirangerfjord and Aurlandsfjord, which guests will be able to view from above during a ride on the Flåm Railway . In Arctic Svalbard, the ships will explore the untouched wilderness of Isfjorden, the second longest fjord in Norway, where passengers should keep an eye out for polar bears. After that, the cruise will sail the Norwegian Sea for a circumnavigation of Iceland and will continue to Greenland to explore the fjord landscapes there, before sailing the Labrador Sea to Canada and then on to the Atlantic.

Fares are from $16,997 per person, for sailings in June and July 2024 or May through July in 2025.

Norwegian Fjords v. Alaska Cruise

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Two of our favorite vacations of all time have been our Norwegian Fjords and Alaska Disney Cruise Line sailings. While beginning to write our cruise report for the latter, I caught myself comparing it to Norway. Rather that going on several tangents throughout the report, I figured I’d break down everything that I think is pertinent here.

Based upon research before both sailings, I know this is a fairly common question among potential cruisers. I also know from reading those questions and comparisons in numerous threads on CruiseCritic , DISBoards , and TripAdvisor that while most people who have done both prefer one or the other, the consensus is that both cruises are exceptional. The internet being what it is, usually you can find polarized opinions about everything, but this does not seem to be one of those things.

UNTIL NOW. Never one to let a potentially good controversy be squandered by rationality, I have a fairly strong preference here. In support of that preference, I’ll go through whether the Alaskan or Norwegian Fjords cruise is superior in a handful of key categories: natural scenery, wildlife, ports, food, and cost. Let’s dig in…

Wildlife: Alaska – This is where the biggest advantage lies for Alaska. Here’s just a partial list of animals you might see: humpback whales, orca, seals, mountain goats, grizzly bears, bald eagles, otters, puffin, and deer. An Alaskan cruise is unquestionably the itinerary to do if you want to see wildlife.

By contrast, in Norway we only saw goats and trolls, and the latter were carved of wood. A lot of people have the impression that you’ll see puffins everywhere in Norway, but unless you take specific excursions to their habitats, that’s unlikely. Don’t expect to see much, if any, wildlife in Norway.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Ports: Norway – Conversely, this is the biggest advantage for Norway. Each of the cities at which we stopped in Norway has a lot going for it in terms of things to do, and not just cheesy tourist spots or shopping. The ports have striking architecture, in-depth topical museums, reliable public transportation, and a local economy predicated upon more than just cruise tourism. We loved the depth that each of these locations provided– Bergen even ended up being one of our favorite cities we’ve ever visited .

Alaska is more of a mixed bag in this regard. It’s definitely possible to find worthwhile things to do beyond the immediate port areas, but you have to dig a little deeper. These ports seemed far more dependent upon the influx of summer cruise visitors (and to that point, there’s also an influx of college students to staff these businesses), and had less to offer beyond the local tourism industry.

The ports for the Norwegian Fjords Disney Cruise are a bit different this year, but with Oslo added to the mix (and Copenhagen now a port stop instead of the embarkation city) this is probably even more pronounced of an advantage for Norway.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Natural Scenery: Push – This is such a tough one. Both have fjords, lush mountains, waterfalls, craggy snow-capped peaks, and more, all of which culminates to create a striking landscape. There are differences, such as the icebergs the ship passes (that are sometimes home to seals) but calling one or the other better is tough.

Whichever you deem “better” will likely come down to the Port Adventures you choose and how much of the natural world beyond the port these experiences show you. Our hike to Pulpit Rock and trip to Trollstigen both offered stunning scenery, but not every cruiser would have those. Likewise, taking the White Pass & Yukon Route high into Alaska’s mountains was unforgettable. When it comes to the natural beauty of these two places, everyone wins.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Food: Push – The special menus aboard our cruise were very similar for the two cruises, to the point that I could swear some “regional inspirations” were identical to what we were served during the Norway cruise. In fairness, seafood is typically associated with both, but it felt like Disney was playing a bit fast and loose with the local specialties in Norway.

In the ports, it’s tough to say which was better. We had a few items (mostly desserts and pastries like School Bread!) in Norway that were incredible, but tried to avoid paying Norway’s exorbitant prices for food. In Alaska, we had Tracy’s Crab Shack, which was excellent. If you like fresh seafood, both are great options, but I have a difficult time calling any of these ports must-visit destinations for foodies.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Costs: Push – I’m sure this will elicit an eye roll from some of you since flying to Europe generally costs more than flying to Canada. However, I don’t think that component of getting to the cruise is the greatest difference.

Rather, where I think the biggest cost differential lies is in expenses during the cruise. As covered in our “ 7 Tips for a Great DCL Alaska Cruise ” we discuss how Port Adventures are essential there, a point also touched upon in our comparison of the port cities above. On the Norwegian Fjords cruise, you could not do a single excursion and have an exceptional time. As pretty as Alaska is, excursions are necessary if you want the “amazing” experience everyone gushes about.

These excursions add up quickly–to the point that I’m inclined to say an amazing Alaska cruise will cost most families more than an amazing Norway cruise. The only reason I’m calling this a ‘push’ is because I think a lot of people end up spending (unnecessary) sums on excursions there, so the two cruises end up being around the same total cost, all things considered.

On a personal note, the Alaska cruise was significantly more expensive for us. We almost always use miles for flights (and did for both of these trips), so that was removed from the equation for us. We were able to score a great last-minute rate on the Norwegian Fjords cruise, whereas we only got a slight on-board booking discount on the Alaska cruise. That plus the cost of Port Adventures made the Alaska cruise about double the cost of Norway for us.

Ancillary note: if you’re approaching these two cruises from a value perspective, another thing we would consider is the relative value as compared to a do-it-yourself trip. Neither of these destinations are cheap, but Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world. Food, lodging, and transportation are all more expensive in Norway. This is not to say Alaska is cheap (far from it!), but it’s not as pricey as Norway.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Our Verdict: Norway – At the end of the day, we enjoyed our Norwegian Fjords cruise more. Both were exceptional experiences–the two best Disney cruises we’ve ever taken–but Norway is #1.

Taking a step back, I have to acknowledge that this is largely personal. Wildlife was not our main motivation for taking either cruise, as I’ve had the chance to see most of the highlights elsewhere (aside from puffins, which I still haven’t seen). A much bigger motivation for us was the culture and scenic beauty of each location, and Norway delivered whereas the Alaska cruise felt overly touristy in port.

We mostly expected this going in. The Alaska cruise just scratches the surface of this stunning state, and even prior to the cruise, we had an Alaska trip that takes us to Denali, Glacier Bay, Katmai, Gates of the Arctic, and Kenai Fjords National Parks. We expected this cruise to be a small taste of Alaska–an appetizer for that main course later–and that’s exactly what it was.

By contrast, even though we’d love to return to Norway, I feel satisfied with the areas of it we did see. If for some reason we never get the opportunity to go back, I’d be at peace with that. (Make no mistake: I absolutely want to go back–it’s just not as “essential” as with Alaska since I felt we saw more of Norway; the trip was closer to a complete experience, if that makes sense?)

That’s just us, though. Despite my rhetoric at the top of the post, I can’t really take issue with anyone who disagrees and prefers the Alaska cruise. They are both excellent cruises, and different people are going to prefer one or the other for different reasons.

I did the Alaskan cruise back in 2015, and I have to say that the nature surrounding that cruise was one of the most spectacular sights I’ve ever seen in my life. Definitely recommended in my book.

I also plan on doing the Norwegian Fjords cruise in 2019, and this post seriously is boosting my excitement level!

' src=

Thanks for the comparison. given the size of Alaska, you did see much more of Norway on a cruise than Alaska!

Vicki is right – with Wow and Norwegian, there are reasonably-priced flights to Scandinavia. Probably similar from my location as going to Vancouver (although more “expensive” time-wise.)

' src=

Tom, I’m confused. You said:

“The Alaska cruise just scratches the surface of this stunning state, and even prior to the cruise, we had an Alaska trip that takes us to Denali, Glacier Bay, Katmai, Gates of the Arctic, and Kenai Fjords National Parks.”

Are you saying this Alaska trip (which btw, sounds amazing and I want to go on it or at least live vicariously through you guys!) is one you’ve already taken or one you have planned?

' src=

I think they do visit those in the 9-day itinerary.

' src=

I think the issue may be with Disney’s Alaskan itinerary. Disney doesn’t visit Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier. Not to be missed on an Alaskan Cruise.

' src=

Are you less likely to get sea sickness on a fjord Cruise? Seems like a great trip;

With regards to flight costs, at least coming from the East Coast, it’s definitely possible to get to Europe *relatively* cheaply, especially if you’re okay with flying budget airlines, have a bit more flexibility, and think outside the box – flying a combo of Norwegian Air/FlyBe, I could get to the UK (Birmingham particularly, which is not going to be the most popular destination for sure!) for about $120 by building my own layover/stopover in Dublin or Belfast, and then hopping on one of the $25-30 flights over the Irish Sea. An option google flights isn’t going to show me when I plug in PVD-BHX, but I just went into the search asking what’s the cheapest I can get to Europe as a whole and knowing I can work from there. Coming back was a whole other question, but then I think I just need to time it for a re-positioning cruise to come back…(even if it does mean going to Dover!)

Slightly more normally, and vaguely off topic, I actually ended up booking via Icelandair for this trip in the end…. into Heathrow and out of Oslo (via Reykjavik) for about $390. Google flights would put those same dates for a DC-Vancouver RT at $377 (Which is why when I had to pay to fly into Van., I instead flew to Seattle and split the vacation and then took the bus across the border. Vancouver on points is also how I ended up with a layover in DFW. While flying from Hartford….)

I’ve only ever done Caribbean cruises before – which I enjoy, because I hate beaches and would go stir crazy if I had to spend more than a couple of days on an island in the middle of nowhere. We’re looking at the San Juan-Miami Merrytime cruise on the Magic next November, which will be our first DCL experience. I think out of the two you compare here, I’d prefer Norway because I do like “proper” ports, and history is my favourite of all. Looking forward to visiting Bergen based on your recommendation in September 😉

How Much Does a Norwegian Fjord Cruise ACTUALLY Cost? (16 Examples)

If you are considering a cruise you may be wondering how much Norwegian Fjords cruises ACTUALLY cost. I’ve been on 3 Fjords cruises and have spent a lot of time researching the cheapest ways to cruise.

In this post, we will look at the prices of Norwegian Fjords cruises on the following cruise lines:  MSC  Cruises, P&O Cruises,  Princess Cruises , Cunard, Royal Caribbean, and Hurtigruten.

How Much do Norwegian Fjord Cruises Cost?

The average cost of a 7-night Norwegian Cruise sailing from the UK in May is £884 ($1100). This raises slightly to £963 ($1200) in July and drops to £861 ($1050) in September.

MSC , Princess, and P&O cruises are consistently the cheapest options when it comes to Norwegian Fjord cruises.

I recently cruised to the Norwegian Fjords onboard Anthem of the Seas seen below. I paid £842 for the 7-night cruise, based on two sharing in a balcony cabin.

anthem of the seas in norway

Example Cruise Prices – 7 Nights From The UK

The table below shows example prices for a selection of Fjords cruises. All cruises are for seven days, although some companies do longer itinerates at a greater cost.

Each cruise was found either on the cruise lines’ website or on large cruise travel agents’ websites.  Only one example from each cruise line was used for the comparison, but these are the cheapest prices I found publicly available.

All these prices are for an inside cabin.  Balcony cabins will be more expensive.

The prices of cruises do of course vary but the prices below do provide a good example of what to expect.

* Cruise from Norway not the UK.

When is The Best Time to Cruise to The Fjords?

June to August is the peak season for Norwegian Fjord cruises.

The end of July and August are normally the most expensive time to cruise, mostly because this is when British schools are on their summer holidays.

Hurtigruten are the only cruise line that sails to Norway all year round.

To learn more about when to cruise to Norway, check out this post: When is The Best Time to Cruise to Norway? – Season Price Guide

It’s Important to Look at What The Cruise Fare Includes

Some cruise lines include more than others, it is always worth checking what “extras” you may have to budget for. Many cruise lines charge additional gratuities or tips.

Below are examples of gratuity costs from 6 of the largest US cruise lines.

P&O cruise fares ALWAYS include gratuities.

MSC fares OFTEN include gratuities, but check at the time of booking as this is dependent on a few factors. To learn more about this, check out this post: MSC and Gratuities – Your Guide on How Much You Can Expect to Pay

Cunard, Princess, and Royal Caribbean will add a daily gratuity to your onboard account, or you can arrange to pay them upfront before you go. To learn more about what gratuities are, check out this post: Cruise Gratuities: A Simple Step by Step Guide For First Time Cruisers

Price Variety by Cruise Line – Budget to Premium

There are a number of cruise lines that cruise the Norwegian Fjords and there is a wide variety in prices. The seven cruises discussed below are all with lines that I have personally cruised with (apart from Hurtigruten, who I haven’t cruised with yet).

MSC Cruises – A Budget Option

The average cost of a 7-night Norwegian Fjord cruise with MSC is £660 ($820) per person. It is possible to find MSC cruises for as little as £450 ($560) for the week, if you know how to find a good deal.

MSC Cruises are consistently winning awards as a family cruise line. They offer great value cruises and now include gratuities in the cruise fare. MSC are popular with young cruisers, families and groups.

In 2021 my Mum and Dad took a Norwegian Fjord cruise on the MSC Virtuosa. They had a great time and would recommend it to others.

To learn more about cruising with MSC make sure you check out our recommend cruise line page:  Recommended Cruise Lines.

P&O Cruises – A Mid Range Option

The average cost of a 7-night Norwegian Fjord cruise with P&O Cruises is £570 ($700) per person. P&O often have discounted 3rd and 4th passenger places when sharing a cabin which can reduce the per person cost considerably.

P&O are a British cruise line that focuses on the family market. They often have cheap family deals and cruise primarily around Europe.

P&O include gratuities in their pricing.

The experience onboard is very British, with lots of tea, Yorkshire puddings, and UK plug sockets on board.

To learn more about what a cruise with P&O is like, check out our recommended cruise lines post here:  Recommended Cruise Lines.

Princess Cruises – A Mid Range Option

The average cost of a 7-night Norwegian Fjord cruise with Princess Cruises is £620 ($770) per person. Daily gratuities will be added to this price.

Princess Cruises are a cruise line owned by the Carnival Corporation.

They focus on high-quality food, entertainment, and service.

Princess is definitely one of my favourite cruise lines, their ships are gorgeous and the experience onboard is very relaxing.

There is usually a variety of nationalities onboard Princess cruises but English is the primary language spoken on board.

Princess cruises don’t include gratuities, but there is an option to upgrade to “Princess +.”  For an additional cost (at time of writing £40 a day) you will have gratuities, drinks and Wi-FI included.

To explore a Princess ship, check out this video:

Royal Caribbean – A Mid Range Option

The average cost of a 7-night Norwegian Fjord cruise with Royal Caribbean is £930 ($1100) per person. A daily gratuity will be added to this price.

I cruised with Royal Caribbean to the fjords for £842 in a balcony cabin, so there are deals to be found if you know where to find them. To learn more about cruising on a budget, check out my cruise course here: Cruise For Less .

Royal Caribbean have the biggest cruise ships on the market and they constantly fill the ships with new and exciting innovations.

It is almost impossible to be bored on a Royal Caribbean cruise, the daily schedule is busy and there are things going on around the clock.

There are multiple dining options on board all ships and the food is generally of high quality.

Daily gratuities will be added to your account daily, as with most American cruise lines.

Cunard  – A Mid Range Option

The average cost of a 7-night Norwegian Fjord cruise with Cunard is £860 ($1070) per person. A daily gratuity will be added to this price.

Cunard is what many would consider traditional ocean cruising.

It has a very strict dress code and multiple formal nights.

Cunard cruise ships are very traditional and elegant in their design, you’ll find a lot of wood, original artwork, and big bouquets of flowers.

If you are looking for a relaxed, easy-going cruise, they are not the cruise line for you.  However the Cunard experience is quite unique and they do what they do, very well.

Hurtigruten – A Expedition Option

The average cost of a 7-night Norwegian Fjord cruise with Hurtigruten is £1600 ($200) per person.

Hurtigruten deserves a special mention when it comes to Fjords cruises.

They are the one cruise line that I have never sailed with – although I would love to!

They are more expensive than mainstream cruises, they have been sailing the Norwegian coast since 1893 so nobody knows Norway better – they say they “don’t know the locals; they are the locals.”

If you are wanting a seven-day cruise, you will have to factor in flights to Norway, seven day cruises start and end there.

There are some cruises that leave from the UK, but they are usually for 11 days or longer but fares are far more expensive.

At the time of writing, 11-day cruises start from around £2500/$3130 for a November sailing.

The staggering beauty of the Norwegian Fjords needs little explaining. This stunning landscape has been shaped over millennia by powerful glaciers leaving rugged rock walls, overhanging cliffs and spectacular waterfalls plunging into the sea. Discover our pick of the best small ship Norwegian Fjords cruises below.

The Norwegian Fjords one of the few areas in the world where ships schedule cruising hours simply to give passengers the time to watch the scenery - and the tranquil experience of gliding through the glassy waters and coming to terms with the sheer scale of the region is unforgettable.

If it is the Norwegian Fjords you want to see, check carefully to see how many days are actually spent in fjordland. For variety, pick a cruise which includes the North Cape or even Spitsbergen, or alternatively combine with a Baltic exploration. For us, this is a region where small ships come into their own, so here's a round-up of the seven best luxury small ships that will be cruising the Norwegian Fjords in 2024 and 2025:

Best small ship cruises to the Norwegian Fjords

1. windstar cruises.

Windstar's lovely Star Legend accommodates a maximum of just 312 guests, and departs Edinburgh for a 10-night sailing to Copenhagen on 12th July 2024 , with the reverse route on 12 August 2024 , repeating the same in July and August 2025 , visiting some of the highlights of Norway's fjordland, including Bergen, Geirangerfjord, Olden and Flam.

Formerly operated by Seabourn, this popular little ship emerges from an exciting refurbishment in 2022, further enhancing the friendly and casual ambience that so delights those guests who prefer a smaller ship.

2. Seabourn

Seabourn Sojourn, the luxury line's elegant 458-guest ship, departs Dover on 10th August 2024 on a 14-day North Cape and Majestic Fjords itinerary, with the same itinerary on 14 June and 12 July 2025 .

Scenic cruising of Sognefjord, Trollfjord and Nordfjord, combined with time in numerous towns and villages along the entire Norwegian coast as far as the North Cape, makes this a particularly lovely voyage on which you'll enjoy Seabourn's outstanding comfort and service in the land of the Midnight Sun.

Seabourn Ovation - Wintergarden Suite

The French flagged cruise line's Explorer Yachts offer lovely seven- and 10-night Norwegian Fjords cruises in early and late July 2024 and June 2025. Visiting at this time means long days, better weather and beautiful fields of wildflowers. Starting or finishing in Bergen, we recommend and additional night or two to explore this beautiful historic city.

Ponant also offers an unusual autumn departure in November 2024 on icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot to see the fjords in a whole new light, which also mixes in stops at the stunning Lofoten Islands.

4. Viking Ocean Cruises

The Norwegian heritage on board Viking ships is clear, from the soft reindeer skins in the Explorers Lounge to the snow grotto in the spa. Light and airy, you will enjoy the stunning scenery from the spacious lounges and deck areas.

These beautiful vessels, accommodating a maximum of 930 guests, offer a choice of lovely summer cruises to combine a taste of the Norwegian Fjords with the Baltic from Stockholm, or with the North Cape and back to the UK. For a Scandinavian style and lots of variety at an inclusive price, Viking is a great choice.

Enhance your cruise

Each of our cruises has been carefully designed for you to get the very best out of your time on board; and now you can enhance your cruise to make it even more special.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

Which Norwegian Fjord itinerary is better

We are going to Norway on a cruise 7or 8 nights and can’t decide between the following two itineraries. Either cruise ship is fine with us but have only sailed Celebrity before. The itinerary is of more importance.

HAL Rotterdam includes 2 scenic cruising days of Fjords (Hardangerfjord/Geiranger) with 3 towns = 7 nights total

4th May 2024 Rotterdam 5th May 2024 Sea Day 6th May 2024 Eidfjord 6th May 2024 Scenic Cruising Hardangerfjord 7th May 2024 Molde 8th May 2024 Geiranger 8th May 2024 Cruising Geirangerfjord 9th Mav 2024 Bergen 10th May 2024 Sea Day 11th May 2024 Rotterdam

CELEBRITY - more towns but no stated Fjords - do you go through the Fjords to get to these towns 8 nights total

5th May 2024 Amsterdam 6th May 2024 Sea day 7th May 2024 Haugesund 8th May 2024 Olden 9th May 2024 Alesund 10th May 2024 Stavanger 11th May 2024 Oslo 12th May 2024 Sea day 13th May 2024 Arrive Rotterdam

Thankyou for any input. We want to see Fjords but not necessarily be on boat 4 days out of 7

I didn’t take a cruise but I stopped at some of the stops listed for both. I would lean towards the Rotterdam cruise. Both fjords are beautiful in different ways and Geirangerfjord is truly spectacular. I’d rather spend time seeing the amazing landscapes of Norway than just going to different cities. But, I suppose it depends on what you prefer. I guess I feel one can always go to lots of cities; how often will you see what Norwegian fjords offer? I truly enjoyed the serene, unspoiled, scenic nature of the fjords.

Define "better".

If you mean more scenic then #1 seems better (without leaving the ship) because it is getting into 2 major fjords incl. one UNESCO word heritage sub-fjord.

If #2 includes an excursion in Olden to glacier Briksdalsbreen it is worth to consider (the valley to it is also very nice). If Stavanger includes excursions into Lysefjord or to Preikestolen it would be also a bonus.

Tip: if there are later ones which offer you 1 day in Bergen on May 17 (national constitution day) it is worth to look at.

My husband and I went on a cruise in June that included stops in Bergen, Alesund, Molde, Olden, Skjolden and Haugesund. We didn't do any excursions and didn't hike due to an injury to my knee. We just had two sea days, coming and going out of Dover, England. I thought that Olden was stunning...we went through a long fjord and it was gorgeous. We enjoyed every stop but if I had to cut one of them out, it would have probably been Haugesund. I wish that our cruise had included Geiranger, because the fjord is supposed to be one of the best. Of course, if you go on the Celebrity cruise, you could add a couple of days in Amsterdam prior to your cruise and explore it. The Keukenhof gardens will be open until May 12th (possibly closing earlier) as well as all of the sites in and around Amsterdam.

Both of these cruises sound really good and you probably can't go wrong with either one.

Make sure your ship goes inside the fjords especially the gorgeous Geirangerfjord. Go on the Norwegian coastal ship, the Hurtigruten , rather than on a regular “cruise ship.” This is the ship the Norwegian locals use to travel up and down the coast. We sailed into fjords. A wonderful experience and the food was outstanding!

I think it is key to remember that not everyone has the same travel budget availability as others. Hurtigrutin is a good choice, but it can also be a very expensive choice. An individual can have a great experience on an another cruise line as well.

A cruise gets you amazing views. It does not give you many interactions with locals, so just be prepared for the trade off.

In my opinion it makes no sense to compare a cruise like requested by OP with a Hurtigruten / Havila passage along the Norwegian coast:

  • number of ports is much higher
  • more excusions with often less peope and a way better quality
  • less passengers, so faster group finding and nearly no cruise bubble, especially not in smaller ports in which 2,000 passengers are simply overcrowding everything
  • closer to local culture also due to Norwegian staff and culture presentations on board
  • their smaller ships reach places larger cruise ships cannot get to
  • only 6-7 days for full way Bergen - Kirkenes
  • port-to-port option for people who want to do only part of the journey
  • much more to tell after the journey

It is simply not a cruise as people know it; they are joining Norway's transport route #1 for a few days with a certain luxury level.

I've been on 2 ultra-luxury cruise ships — endless caviar and free flights make the $685 per day worth it

  • The cruise industry's  new ultra-luxury ships  could be worth the expensive fares.
  • Wealthy cruisers get high-end amenities like complimentary flights, caviar, and wine.
  • Luxury small-ship cruising has becoming increasingly popular.

Insider Today

Say goodbye to questionable lunch buffets and tiny, windowless cabins. On ultra-luxury cruises , travelers get mountains of caviar, roundtrip business-class flights, and floating Rolex stores.

When you think of a cruise, you might picture the giant ships run by companies like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian. On these family-friendly floating resorts, activities like go-kart tracks, waterparks, and virtual reality arcades are commonplace.

On smaller, more expensive cruises, these large and loud amenities are replaced with peace, quiet, and foie gras.

Cruises are generally considered an affordable vacation option, with necessities like food and a cabin included in the base fare.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

However, many mass-market cruise companies are increasingly following the budget airline model : Charge a cheap fare and pile up plenty of irresistible pay-to-play amenities.

Travelers could easily accidentally blow past their budget by the end of the vacation.

But guests luxuriate on high-end cruises, many of which are all-inclusive and don't have this problem.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Sure, luxury cruises have a higher base fare. But you'll never have to reach for your wallet once on board.

That's about as stress-free as you can get with a vacation.

"I'd rather have a few empty beds and get the right guests at the right price," Michael Ungerer, CEO of MSC Group's new luxury cruise line , Explora Journeys, told Business Insider in 2023. "Most of [the amenities] are already included, so we don't have to upsell."

After going on two luxury cruise ships, I now understand why so many wealthy travelers are splurging on these vacations at sea.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

In 2023, I spent one night on Explora Journeys' Explora I while it was docked in New York and three nights on Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Grandeur while it sailed roundtrip from Miami. Both were complimentary non-revenue events for travel agents and media.

Seven Seas Grandeur's least expensive 2024 cruise is a seven-night roundtrip Miami voyage in December, starting at $4,800 per person — about $685 per day. (Travelers can book their own flights and pre-cruise hotels for a discounted fare.)

Meanwhile, Explora I's most affordable itinerary is a $3,030-per-person, 10-night November sailing from Barcelona to Bridgetown, Barbados.

Expensive? Yes. But on a cruise, money buys happiness.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

On both ships, the fare includes complimentary bottles of Champagne, WiFi, endless alcoholic beverages, and access to the spa.

With Regent Seven Seas, pre-cruise hotels, every on board restaurant, flights to and from the ship (business class if international), and most excursions are also included.

Ironically, a higher price means a smaller ship.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

The 922-guest Explora I stands at 813 feet and 63,900 gross-tons. The 746-guest Seven Seas Grandeur is smaller at 735 feet-long and 55,000 gross-tons.

To compare, Royal Caribbean's most popular and the world's largest cruise ship, the 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas , is a casual 1,196 feet long and 248,663 gross tons.

We’ll likely never see Icon of the Seas’ waterslides and theme park amenities across Regent Seven Seas' or Explora’s fleet.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

But small ships have two big benefits: exclusivity and the ability to fit in more desirable ports.

The Grandeur is scheduled to sail to destinations like Oranjestad, Aruba, and Castries, Saint Lucia, while Explora I is planned for Hawaii and Casablanca, Morocco.

Icon of the Seas is exclusively sailing in the Caribbean this year.

Luxury ships still have some traditional amenities like pools, restaurants, and bars — just with an upscale flair, of course.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Instead of arcades, Explora I and Seven Seas Grandeur have cigar lounges.

Instead of a kid's playground, the latter has a quiet library.

Even the drinking water is better: No need to travel to Erewhon to sip on crystal-infused water. Just head to Explora I's spa instead.

The devil (quiet references to quiet luxury) is in the ships’ details.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Explora I has the first Rolex store at sea. The Cartier boutique is right next door.

Up a few decks, travelers can workout at the Technogym Artis Line-supplied gym, where a treadmill costs $20,250 and an elliptical $15,500.

Meanwhile, Seven Seas Grandeur is decorated with 503 chandeliers and a $6 million art collection that includes several original Pablo Picasso pieces and a custom Fabergé egg.

As expected, the food on these luxury ships are comparable to Michelin-starred restaurants.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

Both floating five-star resorts have lunch buffets of raw seafood, lobster tails, and crab legs.

For dinner on the Explora I, travelers can dine on the six restaurants' wagyu tataki, grilled octopus, and aged prime rib with potatoes and caviar.

The Seven Seas Grandeur's five restaurants all serve some form of black truffle, sturgeon caviar, or foie gras.

norwegian fjords cruise comparison

For a 10-night cruise, Regent Seven Seas says its new ship carries 1,200 pounds of lobster, 20 pounds of caviar, and 5,000 bottles of wine — the most pricey at $2,500.

Expensive food means expensive service: Like many high-end on-land restaurants, the hostess always offered me a black napkin when I wore dark pants.

Dinners of steak tartare, lobster, and wine were as commonplace as the scrambled eggs at the breakfast buffet.

And, they're free, according to the laws of " girl math ."

By the end of my second night on the Regent Seven Seas ship, "I'm tired of eating caviar" went from being a joke to a serious statement.

If we're stereotyping, cruise ship bars can be less-than-luxe.

But don't call Explora I's Lobby Bar, which looks like it came out of an actual hotel bar, "trashy." After all, its background music comes from the overhead Steinway piano.

Starbucks outposts are becoming increasingly popular on mass-market ships.

But wealthy cruisers don't get to wake up with green siren-decorated cups of caffeine.

Instead, Explora I and Seven Seas Grandeur have their own coffee shops serving delectable espresso-based drinks and a separate afternoon tea service.

Like the lack of mediocre coffee, travelers on these fine ships will never be stuck in a tiny windowless interior cabin.

The smallest stateroom on the 461-cabin Explora I starts at 377 square-feet and flexes high-end amenities like a Dyson hairdryer.

The 373 cabins on the Seven Seas Grandeur start a bit smaller at 307 square-feet. At least it comes with L'Occitane en Provence products.

Both options have walk-in closets, floor-to-ceiling windows, and balconies. That's unheard of in the cheapest cabin on most mega-ships.

But one of the most pleasant differences between ultra-luxury and mid-tier cruises isn't in the amenities or dining.

It's the general ambiance.

Ultra-luxury ships aren't designed for cruising families with young children . The two ships didn't have cartoonish decor, loud lounges, or an unbearable number of children that could've kicked my fight-or-flight response.

Instead, the high-end vessels' common spaces were modern, mature, and relaxing.

If it seems like everyone you know has recently booked a cruise, you’d be correct.

Popular cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Carnival have recently seen off-the-charts bookings.

The same applies to the industry's more niche and expensive peers — especially as travelers have increasingly splurged on luxurious vacations like small-ship cruising.

In February, Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Regent's parent company, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings , said demand for its luxury brands has been "very high."

After eating caviar and black truffles for every dinner on the Grandeur, I now understand why.
