Manage Smart Search in Safari for Mac

Customize searching in Safari on a Mac

safari mac search field

The Smart Search field at the top of the Safari browser operates as an address field and a search field. Enter a web page name or URL to go to a web page, or enter a word or phrase to initiate a search.

When you enter text into this field, Safari makes suggestions based on the entry. It modifies recommendations as you continue to type. Each suggestion comes from several sources, including your browsing and search history , favorite websites , and Apple Spotlight . Here's how to manage these sources.

Information is this article applies to macOS Catalina (10.15), macOS Mojave (10.14), macOS High Sierra (10.13), macOS Sierra (10.12), OS X El Capitan (10.11), OS X Yosemite (10.10), OS X Mavericks (10.9), and OS X Mountain Lion (10.8).

Manage the Safari Smart Search Default Search Engine

You can modify the sources Safari uses to make its suggestions as well as the browser's default search engine.

Open the Safari browser by selecting its icon in the Dock.

Select Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. When the drop-down menu appears, select  Preferences .

Select the  Search  tab at the top of the screen that opens to show Safari's Search preferences in two sections: Search engine and Smart Search Field.

Select the  Search engine drop-down menu and choose from Google, Bing, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo to specify your preferred search engine. The default option is Google.

If you aren't interested in the default search engine offering suggestions, which Safari includes in the Smart Search field results, disable this feature by clearing the Include search engine suggestions check box.

Manage Safari Smart Search Field Preferences

The Smart Search Field section provides the opportunity to specify which data components the browser uses when making suggestions. Each of the four suggestion sources is enabled by default. To disable one, remove the check mark in the box next to it by clicking it once.

The suggestion sources are:

  • Include Safari Suggestions : The operating system's built-in search service, Spotlight, explores several areas, including the files on your hard drive, apps, and music files, along with Wikipedia content and more.
  • Enable Quick Website Search : Many websites offer an integrated search engine that allows you to search for content within that site. Safari provides shortcuts to these searches in some cases, allowing you to search sites from the Smart Search field. To see which sites your Safari installation currently supports with this feature, select  Manage Websites .
  • Preload Top Hit in the Background : Safari can silently load the top result in the browser's default search engine for the search terms that you enter. Users browsing on limited data connections usually disable this function.
  • Show Favorites : Your stored Favorites, formerly known as Bookmarks, can be included as a Smart Search field suggestion source.

Show Full Website Address

Safari only displays the domain name of a website in the Smart Search field. Previous versions showed the full URL. If you want to revert to the old setting and view complete web addresses, take the following steps.

Open the Safari  Preferences  dialog.

Go to the  Advanced  tab.

Select the  Show full website address  check box.

Tips for how to search in Safari on Mac

How to Search Safari Mac

The search feature in Safari is a lot smarter than most people probably realize. It’s not called the Smart Search Field for nothing. Without going to Google or another search engine, you can start typing in things like flight numbers or local weather to receive related suggestions.

In addition, you can search an existing webpage, repeat a search, or search a site you’ve visited before. To help, we’ve assembled some tips for using search in Safari.

Searching in Safari on Mac

Perform a quick safari search, customize your search options, search the current webpage, search a previous website, repeat a recent search, switch tabs with a search, change the search engine.

As we mentioned above, you can perform searches that offer up fast results using the Smart Search Field.

You can see quick details for movies, TV shows, songs, artists, and much more. For checking flight status, just enter the flight number.

For getting your weather conditions, start typing in the word “weather.”

Before you head to a specific search engine, try entering your keyword or phrase into the Smart Search Field because you might find exactly what you want without that extra step.

You’ll notice handy suggestions when you enter a term into the Smart Search Field. But, if you want to remove specific types of suggestions , you can disable those options in Safari Preferences.

Open Safari and click Safari > Preferences from the menu bar. Click the Search tab. You’ll see four checkboxes in the Smart Search Field section that you can uncheck if you like.

Safari Search Preferences Mac

Include Safari Suggestions : As you type in the Smart Search Field, Safari will offer suggestions from the App Store, Music, nearby locations, and the internet.

Enable Quick Website Search : For sites you search often, searches are recorded so you can speed up additional searches later. Click Manage Websites to add or remove sites from the list.

Preload Top Hit in the background : View the Top Hits for your search based on your bookmarks and browsing history.

Show Favorites : Display your Safari Favorites below the Smart Search Field when you click inside of it.

You also have an option to Include search engine suggestions below the Search engine field. So if you use Google for example, you’ll see Google Suggestions when using the Smart Search Field.

If you’re looking for a particular word or topic on a page you’re viewing, you can do a search for it.

Use the keyboard shortcut Command + F . You’ll see a search bar appear at the top of the page. Enter your keyword or phrase and you’ll see how many times it appears on the page. You can use the arrows to move to each instance found or skim the page to see the keyword highlighted in every spot.

Safari Search Site Mac

Just click Done in the search bar to close it when you finish.

To search a website that you’ve visited before using a particular keyword or phrase, just enter the site and then the keyword.

For example, you can enter “idownloadblog mac” to search iDB for Mac-related items.

Safari Search Previous Site Mac

You can easily go back to a recent search you performed in Safari. Delete any text in the Smart Search Field and then click the magnifying glass . You’ll see recent search appear below the field that you can select again.

Safari Recent Searches Mac

Also, you can click History > Search Results SnapBack from the menu bar to go to your last search .

If you have several tabs open in Safari, you can also switch to one easily using the search feature. Enter a keyword in the Smart Search Field and you’ll see open tabs pertaining to it. Just click to switch.

Safari Search Switch Tabs Mac

To change the default search engine you use, click Safari > Preferences from the menu bar. Click the Search tab and make a selection from the Search engine drop-down list.

Wrapping it up

When you’re looking for something on the web, you want your search to be simple. And hopefully it will be even easier now with these Safari search tips.

Do you have any types for searching with Safari that you’d like to share? If so, feel free to comment below!

How to change the default search engine on Safari for macOS

You don't have to settle for Google Search!

By default, many people and browsers rely on Google Search. While Google's search engine is arguably the best out there in terms of result accuracy, it collects plenty of user data. Consequently, some users would rather not depend on it when searching for things on Safari. Fortunately, you can change the default search engine in Safari on macOS Ventura . Whether you have a MacBook Pro (2023) or any other Mac model , all you have to do is follow the detailed steps we've listed below and start moving away from Google.

Changing the default search engine on Safari for Mac

  • Launch the Safari app on your Mac.
  • Press the Space Bar on your keyboard.
  • A list of available search engines will appear.
  • Now, whenever you type a search term in Safari's search bar, the app will rely on the search engine you've picked and display relevant results.
  • You can change the default search engine on Safari again by following the exact same steps.

Being able to conveniently and quickly switch the default search engine on Safari for macOS is certainly welcome. After all, many of us prefer not to depend on Google Search when looking for online information due to ad trackers, privacy concerns, or just due to a different preference. Microsoft Edge defaults to Bing, so why just stick with Google at all?

Personally, I rely on DuckDuckGo due to its privacy-focused approach that allows you to block trackers. That's not to mention that its UI is intuitive and it even supports dark mode. Other than that, we have Bing if you prefer it (although you can't take advantage of Bing chat in Safari), and Ecosia, which claims to be a more eco-friendly option.

Safari: The Smart Search Bar, the Cursor, & You

When you open a new tab ( Command-T ) or a new window ( Command-N ) in Safari, you'll almost always want your cursor to start in the so-called Smart Search Field.

safari mac search field

So if Safari isn't doing this for you, here's how you fix it. The secret lies in a setting in Safari > Preferences > General , under either "New windows open with" or "New tabs open with."

safari mac search field

That's it! From now on, your cursor will be ready for you to type right away when you head off somewhere new. And you won't have to move your mouse or trackpad at all. Laziness helps me solve so many of my problems, people.

How to Perform a Quick Website Search in Safari

There are several ways to search the web in Apple's Safari browser. In this article, we're going to highlight a way of searching specific websites using a lesser-known Safari feature called Quick Website Search . The option is designed to work with sites that have a built-in search field, like the one you can find at the top of the main page at MacRumors.com. Here's how it works.

How to Enable Quick Website Search in iOS

The functionality of Quick Website Search depends on how a given site implements its search field, but we've found that it works with most popular websites that offer them, so it's worth making sure you have the feature enabled. To do this on iPhone and iPad, launch the Settings app, tap Safari -> Quick Website Search and slide the Quick Website Search toggle to the green ON position.

How to Enable Quick Website Search on Mac

The feature works the same way in Safari for macOS. To see if it's enabled, select Safari -> Preferences... from the menu bar, choose the Search tab, and make sure the checkbox is ticked next to Enable Quick Website Search .

How to search open tabs in safari on mac.

Find that one missing tab in your overloaded Safari tab bar.

Quick Links

Searching tabs using "tab overview".

When you have dozens of tabs open in a Safari window, it becomes difficult to find a specific tab in the tab bar. Here's how to quickly search open tabs within the current window in Safari on Mac.

Safari's Tab Overview screen (similar to the tab switcher on iPhone and iPad) includes a built-in feature that lets you search through all the open tabs in the current window. The only drawback is that if you have multiple Safari windows open, you'll have to perform this action in each window.

To get started, open Safari on your Mac and visit several sites in multiple tabs. Then, click the Tab Overview button (which looks like one square overlapping another) in the top-right corner of the Safari window.

(Alternately, you can select View > Tab Overview in the menu bar or press Shift+Command+\ on your keyboard.)

You will now see all your open tabs in a grid view that Apple calls "Tab Overview." If you're using a modern version of Safari on your Mac, you'll see a "Search Tabs" bar in the top-right corner.

(If you don't see the search bar there, scroll up to reveal it. We recommend that you update Safari immediately  because using an older browser is a huge security hazard .)

On the Tab Overview screen of Safari 14 and up, simply start typing the name of the website or the title of the page that you're searching for---there's no need to click the search bar. On older versions of Safari, you'll need to click the search bar first or press Command+F.

Safari will instantly start filtering your results. When you find the tab you're looking for, click its thumbnail to switch to it.

Use it as much as you'd like to search through your tabs. If you use Safari as the default browser on your iPhone or iPad, this feature is available in the mobile version of Safari as well !

For easy access from the Smart Search field, I have some bookmarks that contain a simple unique sequence of characters in the name (ccc, vvv, and similar). Before 17.4, I typed ccc in the Smart Search field and the bookmark with that name appeared below. After updating to 17.4, typing ccc only shows the option to search with the default search engine. For Safari to show the bookmark, I have to press space after ccc or two spaces if the sequence of characters is at the end of the bookmark’s name. More, if Show Favorites is unchecked, Safari still suggests bookmarks. I see the same behavior in Sonoma 14.4 and Monterey 12.7.4. Can anyone else confirm it’s an issue in Safari 17.4?

TOP-11 Moscow Parks to Visit

I have chosen the best 11 Moscow parks to visit and spend a beautiful time for you. Do not miss and choose one that you like the most – cycling, festivals, flowers, panoramic views and many other things are waiting for you!

Gorky Park (The Central Park of Culture and Leisure) – The main one of the Moscow Parks

In my opinion this park could be called the main park of the city. Why? Because of its huge territory, the central location and the amount of people visiting the park daily.  It was founded in 1928 and in 2011 it was totally reconstructed. Now it pleases visitors with modern objects and soft green lawns.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 9

The Gorky park is a the right choice for everyone! The youth will like a free WiFi, bicycles, skateboards and other rentals; the couples will enjoy spending time near the river, watching a sunset; parents will appreciate colorful playgrounds and a room for mother and child. Everyone can find something for themselves: from yoga classes  to watching movies in a cozy summer cinema, from dance classes to volleyball playground. Gorky Park is also the venue for all kinds of exhibitions, festivals, events for children and adults. During the winter there is one of the biggest skating rinks in the park.

Museon Art Park – A Second Gorky they say

“Museon” is located on the opposite side of Krimsky Val street. And right now some people believe that Gorky and Museon together is a one space sharing the same beauty.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 2

The Park of Arts was named this way because there is the largest composition of open-air sculptures in Russia. In its territory there are already more than 1000 unique exhibits: from monuments of the socialist realism era to various kinds of contemporary art. But this is not all the attractions of the park. In recent years, “Museon” has become an important cultural site of the city. The park regularly hold many different concerts, festivals, educational projects in the field of art and design. There is a Central House of the Artist, a comfortable summer cinema and other attractions on territory. Be sure to stroll pedestrian Crimean embankment, which looks like a modern park.

Neskuchny Garden – True Russian Nature is Here

Neskuchny garden is located on the right bank of the Moscow River. Today it is also seen as a part of the Gorky Park. This landscape park is one of the oldest in the city and is protected by the state. Its name was received from the Neskuchnoye Estate of  Prince Trubetskoi which is still located in the park.

  • Leninsky Prospekt metro station, Leninsky Prospect, 30

This park is famous mostly for its location close to the Gorky park. It is a quite place with true nature, lots of trees and squirrels and also ancient architecture. As in every park, there are sports and playgrounds, cafes and even a football field.

Zaryadye Park – 5 Steps Away From The Red Square

The area of this brand new park was opened only in September 2017 and located in the very heart of Moscow – right near the Red Square.

  • Open from 10AM to 10PM
  • Teatralnaya, Okhotnyi ryad, Ploschad Revolutsii

The park has 4 zones, each of them represent different parts of Russian landscapes. Above the river there is a floating bridge from where you get to see one of the best panoramic views on Moscow. Other attractions of the park are 5D cinema where you can take a flight above Moscow, few cafes and restaurants, pretty lakes with fishes and old preserved churches. In addition there is still being built a  philharmonic hall, covered with a huge dome and an Ice cage where the temperature will always stay below zero degrees.

When you are on the Red Square do not miss it!

All-Russia Exhibition Center (VDNKh) – The Soviet Style Moscow Park

Park VDNKh – one of the most famous parks in Moscow. This park is one of the sights of the city as it hasn’t changed much since the Soviet era.

  • VDNKh metro station, Prospect Mira, 119

The symbol of VDNKh is a fountain with 16 women symbolizing the friendship of the nations of the USSR. Around this fountain there are all the pavilions representing 16 republics. Now inside the pavilions you find various shops, cafes and exhibitions. If you go deep inside the park you will find a rocket Vostok and and an aircraft. What is funny the inside of the aircraft there is actually a photo exhibition. Near the northern entrance you there is a famous sculpture “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman”. It is extremely famous among Russians as all the movies by Mosfilm corporation used to start with the picture of this statue. But if you go further inside the park you will reach a very calm area. A lake is there, forest and birds singing. Since the park occupies a large area I suggest you to rent a bicycle.

Sokolniki Park – A Place For A Hunt Or For Leisure?

The park got its name because of the royal falconry, which took place there in the past when there was a dense forest. (Sokol means a falcon.) In 2011 it was significantly transformed: updated lawns, landscaped ponds and picnic areas, restored summer cinema and theater, a large rose garden, sports grounds, bicycle paths and other things.

  • Sokolniki metro station, Sokolnichesky Val, 1, p. 1

From the main entrance along the alley you can walk to the Sokolniki circle, where 8 alleys form 9 sectors, in each of them you will find trees of the same breed.  The park is famous for its rosary, as well as flower decoration. On the territory of the park there are concert halls, a library, amusement zone, dances zone and many many other attractions. In winter the park has a skating rink (a free of charge one) and ski runs. During the warm season you can rent a bicycle.

Tsaritsino Park – A Different World Inside Moscow

Here you can walk for hours, admiring the most beautiful nature and magnificent architecture.

  • Open from 6AM to 12AM
  • Tsaritsyno metro station, Dolsky, 1

The most amazing part of the park is the lake with a light and musical fountain. Every evening the fountain starts the show. Lights and music combined make you feel like you are not in Moscow but in a fairy tale. The park is also well equipped for sports lovers and healthy lifestyle. There are volleyball and basketball courts, a tennis court, sports facilities for acrobatics, bodybuilding equipment.

What I personally like about this park is the atmosphere. This place is actually far from the city center but I love going there anyway. Whenever I go there I feel like I left Moscow with all its hectic lifestyle. It is the place where I relax, enjoy myself or a company of my friends and feel kind of different. By the way totally suggested for a date!

Kolomenskoye Park – Combination Of Reserve and Architecture

The Kolomenskoye park is actually a Museum-Reserve. It is a former residence of Russian tsars and one of the most scenic places in Moscow.

  • May to September – open from 8AM to 12AM, October to April – from 8AM to 9PM
  • Kolomenskoye metro station, Andropov Ave, 39

Alike with Tsaritsino park Kolomenskoye park has its own special atmosphere with all the architecture, trees, ponds and even a river bank. The park regularly hosts various folk festivals and different fairs. In summer time you can play with kites or rent a bicycle and ride around the huge area of the park.

I love the view that you get on the city from one of the hills near the river. I love the apple trees alleys and the beautiful churches. It is also a bit far from the city center but yet worth going there. One of my best friends even celebrated her wedding there.

Aptekarsky Garden or Botanical garden of the Moscow State University – The Best Botanical Garden in The World

Aptekar in Russian language means a pharmacist so basically it is a pharmacist’s garden. It was founded in 1706 by Peter The Great for growing medicinal plants for the royal family. But later they moved it from under the walls of the Kremlin to the current location.

  • Open from 10AM to 8PM
  • Prospect Mira metro station, Prospekt Mira, 26

In the botanical garden there are no attractions and noisy crowds of tourists. The area of the garden is not as big as any other park in Moscow. And the entrance is not free. But this exactly what makes this park one of the most comfortable in the city. In the Aptekarsky garden they grow thousands of different plants, flowers and trees. Some of the trees are more than 300 years old. They held different festivals there: flowers festivals, sand and ice sculptures expositions.

For me it is one of the most beautiful parks not only in Moscow but in the world. I have never seen so many different flowers and plants anywhere else. And trust me I am a real park lover. And what is more the staff really takes care about every single tree or plant there, some of the trees have names and stories. I love it there and I think the price is really worth what you get.

Victory Park – A Park That Makes Us Remember The War

The park is located on the Poklonnaya Hill and it has one of the world’s largest memorial complexes dedicated to the World War II. The park was opened for the 50th anniversary of the Victory on May 9, 1995. It is also one of the main venues in the city for holding a variety of mass events.

  • Park Pobedy metro station, Brothers Fonchenko, 7

On the main avenue of the park there are with 1418 fountains – exactly as long as the war lasted. Fountains make five water terraces, symbolizing five years of military operations. And in the center of the park there is the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. If you are interested in the history of the war do not miss it. The Poklonnaya Hill is a part of the park and from the hill you get one of the best views on the city of Moscow. And I could say this is the best place for watching the fireworks during the mass celebrations. But be aware it gets too crowded then. As in most of the other big parks you can rent a bicycle or rollers there.

Izmailovsky Park – A Mix of a Big Forest and Attractions

Izmaylovsky Park occupies a huge green territory, making up a large part of the Izmailovo district. The park consists of two parts: Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest and the forest park of Izmailovo. First part is full of attractions and restaurants while the second one is like a real forest with pine trees, birch groves, beautiful clearings and ponds.

  • Izmaylovskaya, Shosse Entuziastov or Partizanskaya metro stations, Izmaylovsky Park

It is easy to spend there a whole day. A large landscaped area and a lot of various entertainments for children and adults will help you not to get bored. An observation wheel, a boat station, children’s playgrounds, a dance floor, sports grounds, a skate park – all this is only a small part of the possible leisure activities. In the park there are bike paths and a rental services.

I don’t go there often to be honest. But the park is very very close whenever to a souvenir market on Partizanskaya metro station. And whenever the weather is nice and I have enough of free time I stroll through the alleys of the park and enjoy the nature. So if you are going to the souvenir market too and you have enough free time then do go to the park too.

Clean, nice, actually useful AI feature, and still improving

The Arc search is very quick and clean. It is currently optimized for searching up informations and less for holding tabs upon tabs of things. It will hold recent tabs for you, with auto archive for inactive tabs with settings you can pick from 12 hours to 2 30 days. There is no permanent tabs/bookmarks but the search bar shows past tabs in the history too, so I never felt like I need the bookmarking feature (would be nice to have though). The AI search actually helps summarizing the information without me having to click and scroll through pages to find them. Sometimes it even shows info I want that normal google search with the exact same keywords didn’t provide. Pretty impressed and switched to Arc search as my main browser now. Looking forward to the future updates for Arc search

Amazing, needs some work

I absolutely love Arc on Mac. And I so much want to be able to use Arc on all of my devices. But the truth is I don’t use my iPhone for web browsing that much. I use my iPad and my Mac. And unfortunately, there is no version of any arc for iPad natively. only the scaled versions of the iPhone apps, which are unfortunately just not suitable for normal browsing. At least there is the Arc sync app where I can get my tabs that I need. But that just adds many extra steps when on iPad it would be nice to just have an arc with sync and with all the features, that should be an arc. The four stars, however are because I know it is still new and I know they’re still working on everything. The one star missing is just for the fact that there is no native iPad app and there is no all in one app in general. If you have a Mac, I absolutely recommend downloading Arc. And if you use your iPhone for web browsing also recommend. And if you have an iPad, I would highly recommend sending out your request to the developers so that they know that it should be a priority.

Beautiful, and actually useful AI features!

I got the email announcement for this and had to download it immediately. While the AI research isn’t perfect, it does about as well (for me) as GPT-4 without the monthly subscription. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind paying a small monthly fee for it, but I’m glad it’s free for now. It’s also super clean and the haptic feedback makes it feel alive! Having the full screen taken up by the webpage with only a small navigation bar at the bottom is interesting, and I would complain about the lack of buttons, however for a mobile browser, I kinda like the simplicity. If this ever gets ported to iPadOS (PLEASE!!!!), I would like to see more buttons available with one click instead of having to hit the up arrow and then back. Can’t wait to see more cool features in the future!

Study: Drinking 1 Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar Each Day Linked to Weight Loss in Younger Adults

safari mac search field

  • A recent study on Lebanese teens and young adults linked drinking apple cider vinegar with significant weight loss after 12 weeks
  • Despite its promising results, the study had some important limitations
  • While apple cider vinegar may impact weight loss, it's not a substitute for healthy diet and regular exercise

Drinking apple cider vinegar has become a popular way to lose weight in recent years, but can it really help people slim down?

A new study found that Lebanese teenagers and young adults who drank up to one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar daily for 12 weeks dropped an average of 15 pounds.

The research, published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention, & Health , also found that participants had lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels at the end of the three-month period.

Previous research has assessed the tangy drink’s ability to reduce weight in older adults, but this is the first study to test the strategy in younger people.

“This age group was selected to address the lack of research on ACV’s effects specifically in younger individuals, and to intervene early in life to potentially prevent long-term health complications associated with obesity,” study author Rony Abou-Khalil, PhD , head of the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at Holy Spirit University of Kaslik in Jounieh, Lebanon, told Health .

While the research may make it seem like a daily shot of apple cider vinegar could be an effective weight-loss tool, some experts caution against making too much of the study given its considerable limitations.

Here’s what you need to know about the study, the potential side effects of drinking too much apple cider vinegar and other expert-endorsed ways to lose weight.

Nadine Greeff / Stocksy

The Potential Link Between Apple Cider Vinegar and Weight Loss

Abou-Khalil said the researchers set out to assess a potential solution to obesity that would align with the growing interest in non-pharmaceuticals. “We were motivated to explore potential natural remedies for weight reduction that could offer safe and effective alternatives to traditional interventions,” he said.

They decided to test apple cider vinegar, made from crushed and fermented apples and long used as a health tonic.

The team recruited 120 participants aged 12 to 25. They divided them into four groups and instructed people in three of the groups to drink either 5, 10, or 15 milliliters (ml) of apple cider vinegar in the morning. (For reference, 15 ml is equal to about one tablespoon.) The fourth group drank a placebo.

When the study began, the average weight of participants was about 173 pounds. After 12 weeks, researchers found that the apple cider vinegar groups shed weight overall.

The group that drank 15 ml daily lost the most, dropping its average to about 155 pounds. Those who drank 10 ml reduced their average weight to 159 pounds, and the group that consumed 5 ml dropped to an average of 163 pounds. All three groups had a decline in waist and hip circumference and body mass index (BMI).

The team also discovered significant improvements in blood glucose , triglyceride, and cholesterol levels.

The study is the first to assess apple cider vinegar’s impact on health besides weight. It’s also the only one to examine how the drink affects younger people—though other research has tested whether it helps older adults shed pounds.

A small (but often-cited) 2009 trial found that consuming 1 or 2 tablespoons of the tangy drink daily resulted in modest weight loss of 2 to 4 pounds after three months. In another small study, researchers gave apple cider vinegar to people on both calorie-restricted and regular diets. After 12 weeks, both groups had lost weight, but those who consumed ACV had lost more.

Why Might Apple Cider Vinegar Help People Shed Pounds?

Abou-Khalil said it’s unclear what’s behind apple cider vinegar’s potential effect on weight loss, but he has some theories.

“One proposed mechanism is that ACV may help to increase feelings of satiety, leading to reduced calorie intake,” he noted. “Additionally, ACV has been suggested to influence metabolism and insulin sensitivity, potentially contributing to fat oxidation and reduced fat storage.”

Approaching the Study’s Results With Caution

While it may seem exciting that something as simple as a daily dose of apple cider vinegar could lead to weight loss, Abou-Khalil acknowledged that the research has some limitations.

For one, twelve weeks may not have been enough to pinpoint a firm association between apple cider vinegar and weight loss, Abou-Khalil said. “Longer-term studies may provide insights into the sustainability of the observed effects and whether any changes are maintained over time,” he added.

It’s also difficult to generalize the findings given the study’s small size, focus only on adolescents and young adults, and lack of diversity among participants. “Our study focused on the Lebanese population, and cultural and dietary practices may vary among different ethnic groups,” Abou-Khalil said.

Melissa Mitri, MS, RDN , a private practice dietitian and weight loss expert unaffiliated with the study, echoed that sentiment. “There is not enough evidence to date that apple cider vinegar will lead to weight loss in diverse groups of people,” she told Health .

Are There Downsides to Taking Apple Cider Vinegar Every Day?

Consuming apple cider vinegar on a daily basis can bring on some unpleasant side effects.

Apple cider vinegar can “degrade tooth enamel and irritate the esophagus,” Mitri said, which is why she recommends diluting it in water if you decide to drink it.

A daily shot of ACV might also cause nausea and slow down digestion, which could pose a problem for people whose digestion is already slower due to gastroparesis or prescription weight loss medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro.

Apple cider vinegar could also interact with other medicines, such as insulin, diuretics, and laxatives, Mitri said. That’s why it’s important to consult a doctor before trying apple cider vinegar if you’re taking these or any other medications.

“Lastly, it is not advised for those with kidney disease, as its high acidity can strain the kidneys,” Mitri said.

Effective Weight-Loss Strategies

A daily dose of apple cider vinegar may help you lose weight, but other strategies are far more tried and true.

“To lose weight, you need to be in a calorie deficit, i.e., take in fewer calories than you burn,” Mitri explained. “You can do this by reducing your calorie intake in your diet, exercising more, or, ideally, combining both.”

Ultimately, these old standbys are probably a surer path to long-term weight loss than jumping on the apple cider vinegar trend.

A Guide to the Most Beautiful Green Spaces in Moscow

Izmailovsky park in Moscow

Home to more parks than any other city in Russia , Moscow offers a cornucopia of choice when it comes to green spaces. From innovative wild urbanism to 18th-century royal estates, here are the best places to escape from the city buzz in Russia’s capital.

Spread over a territory of almost 300 acres, Gorky Park is Moscow’s most popular green space. Opened in 1928, it was designed as ‘a city inside a city’ with its own telegraph, police unit and a doctor’s office. Some 90 years later, Gorky Park offers everything from segway rides to an open-air movie theatre, through to illuminating lectures and fantastic dining spots.
