Experience the Beauty of Teresópolis, Brazil: A Guide to Visiting the City

Most people who visit Brazil go to the same places.

Rio, Florianópolis… sometimes all the way to Foz de Iguaçu.

And while those are amazing, there is so much more! 😍

Looking to explore something different?

Meet Teresópolis, a charming town nestled in the heart of Brazil’s mountainous region a short drive from Rio de Janeiro. If you’re into nature, dream views, culture, amazing gastronomy, craft beer, and friendly locals, you’re up for a treat.

I arrived with the idea to spend a few days here and ended up staying more than two weeks.

Here’s why you should visit Teresópolis, and how to get the most out of your time.

Discovering Teresópolis: An Overview

Located in the heart of Serra dos Órgãos mountain range in Brazil, the quaint town of Teresópolis has been attracting visitors for centuries with its natural beauty, rich culture, and adventurous vibe.

While Cariocas (people from Rio) love escaping here to enjoy colder temperatures and a different climate, it’s still surprisingly underrated. Most visitors are Brazilians. And even among those who make it here, most end up exploring a tiny part of everything the area has to offer.

Whether you’re into hiking, wildlife, or delicious food, Teresópolis has something for you.

A Brief History of Teresópolis

Teresópolis was founded in 1891 by the Count of Teresópolis, a visionary landowner who recognized the town’s potential as a tourist destination.

The town quickly grew in popularity, thanks to the opening of a new railway line that connected Rio de Janeiro to the mountainous region.

The town’s European-inspired architecture and stunning natural beauty made it a popular destination for the city’s elite, and the area soon became known as the “Switzerland of Brazil”.

Today, Teresópolis still retains its charm and allure, offering visitors a glimpse into the past.

Why Visit Teresópolis

Unique geography, nature, and climate.

Teresópolis is located at an altitude of 930 meters above sea level, providing you with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The town is located between the Serra dos Órgãos mountain range and the Serra do Mar, two of Brazil’s most stunning natural wonders.

The town’s mild climate, with temperatures averaging around 20°C year-round, makes it the perfect destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and birdwatching. Teresópolis is also home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, with over 1,000 species of plants and animals found in the region.

Diverse culture, gastronomy and traditions

Teresópolis is a melting pot of cultures and traditions, influenced by the native Guarani people, the European immigrants who settled in the region, and the African slaves who were brought to Brazil during the colonial era.

The town is home to several museums, art galleries, and cultural centers that showcase the town’s diverse heritage. The Paquequer Historical Museum, for example, is housed in a 19th-century mansion and features exhibits on the town’s history and culture.

At the Artisan Market, located in the town center, you’ll find locally made crafts and souvenirs. And the Casa da Memória Arthur Dalmasso is a cultural center that hosts exhibitions, concerts, and other events throughout the year.

For being a relatively small city, you’ll also be spoiled with good places to eat. More about what restaurants not to miss below .

It’s one of the safest places in Brazil

Many people from Rio and other cities in Brazil have chosen to relocate to Teresópolis. I meet business owners, taxi drivers, and more. All of them mention safety as the main reason why they love the life here.

Whether you’re into history, nature, or simply looking to relax and unwind in a beautiful setting, Teresópolis has something for you.

Ready to plan your visit and discover the magic of this charming Brazilian town?

What to do in Teresópolis

Teresópolis is surrounded by lush forests, sparkling rivers, and impressive peaks. It’s a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and adventure seekers, with a variety of trails that cater to all experience and fitness levels.

Teresópolis is also home to several waterfalls and natural pools , perfect for a refreshing dip or a relaxing swim.

If you’re planning a trip to Teresópolis, here are some of the activities you should not miss.

Explore amazing nature and views in national parks of Teresópolis

While there are three main parks in Teresopolis, most people, even locals, are only aware of one or two. Each one is unique in its own way and deserves the time.

Apart from hiking, Teresópolis is a dream come true for birdwatching and climbing. All the parks are home to a wide variety of wildlife, such as monkeys, exotic birds you’ve never seen before, and reptiles.

Serra dos Órgãos National Park

teresopolis

Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos it’s the most famous park and also easiest accessible. It’s a short walk away from the old town. It’s known for its stunning landscapes of rugged peaks, deep valleys, waterfalls, and dense forests.

It can get crowded on the weekends and they also regulate the number of visitors to protect the park. If you come late on a busy day, there is a chance they deny you entry. I came here early on a weekday and had amazing viewing points (including the one on the picture) to myself.

A part from waterfalls, shorter hikes, and viewing points like Mirante do Cartão Postal (where the photo is taken), one of the highlights here is Travessia Petrópolis-Teresópolis. A scenic hike between Teresópolis and its even more famous neighbor town Petrópolis. It takes around three days to complete and it’s recommended to do it during the dry season (April/May to September).

Parque Natural Municipal Montanhas de Teresópolis

One of the main attractions in this park is a giant stone turtle. There is a hike called the turtle viewing point. Don’t be confused if you don’t see the turtle at the end of it, it’s because you’re standing on it. Beautiful view thoug – even though you could question the clarity in the marketing. 😅

They opened a new hike in 2022 on the way where you actually can see the turtle.

You’ll also find several places to climb in this park and some cool accommodation options in the area. I went on a private tour with a local guide and we almost didn’t meet anyone on the way (apart from some snakes and lots of birds).

Parque Estadual dos Três Picos

teresopolis

As the name suggest, this park is known for its high peaks, such as the Pico do Caledônia, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

I went for a morning hike to Dois Bicos and loved it. Fairytale landscape. You pass by cows, horses, and then it’s straight up on an unmarked trail for about 1 hour through jungle-like nature.

The views at the top are surreal even when you’re right there, and we had them all to ourselves. There is also a little guestbook at the top where you can leave a message, and read notes from others inspired by the views. 😉

Before the hike’s starting point, you’ll pass by Cachoeira dos Frades, one of the most well-known waterfalls in the area. Perfect for a swim! The waterfall can get crowded in the weekends since you can drive all the way to it. We came early in the morning and no one else was there. As with everything else in life, timing makes all the difference.

Other activities in Teresópolis

Granja comary: good for walks (and football lovers).

Granja Comary is the official training center of Brazil’s national soccer team. A must-visit destination for football fans. The center offers guided tours that allow visitors to explore the facilities, see the troves of trophies and memorabilia, and, if lucky, catch a glimpse of the players in training (you better be here in the right season to get this opportunity).

Even if you’re not a fotball fan, Granja Comary is worth a visit for its beautiful gardens, which are filled with exotic flowers, trees, and loots of ducks.

Feirinha do Alto: Charming weekend market

The Feirinha do Alto is a vibrant street market that takes place every weekend, offering visitors a chance to sample local delicacies, buy handicrafts, and mingle with the locals. A great place to try traditional Brazilian food and to find unique souvenirs to take home.

But the market is more than just a place to shop and eat. It’s also a hub of cultural activity, with live music performances, dance shows, and art exhibitions taking place throughout the day.

teresopolis

When you make it here, make sure to stop by Dona Ro for the best churros in town . She first started selling churros from her home via delivery. Then she managed to get a stand at the weekend market. Now she earns more in one weekend than what she used to do per month at her old resturant job. Sounds crazy, but if you see the line you get it. 😅 She also started offering delivery services throughout the week, paid for her daughter’s college, and more.

Suspiro is known for their delicious meringue. The lady has her own recipe and people keep on coming back for more. Elci doces , run by two charming ladies in their 50+, is your go-to stop for delicious cakes.

The Feirinha do Alto is also a great place to try the cocada, a coconut-based sweet that comes in different flavors, and the caldo de cana, a sugarcane juice.

Where To Stay In Teresópolis

While some of these link to third party sites with more pictures, you’ll always get a better deal if you make a direct reservation (via Whatsapp or social media).

Pousada Casa Tere

This guesthouse has a one-of-a-kind structure and was built in 1972. Located on top of a river, you’ll here live spa music all the time. The pousada opened a year ago after the owner completely renovated the abandoned building. People can’t believe it’s the same place!

The exact history of the guesthouse is unknown, adding to its allure. From the moment you step foot in Pousada Casa Tere, you’ll feel at home. The warm and welcoming atmosphere coupled with the beautiful decor will make you want to stay just a little bit longer.

Located in the Iucas neighborhood of Teresopolis, Casa Verde is a cozy and charming suite that offers all the comfort and amenities you need for a relaxing stay. The suite is located on the first floor of a house and is designed to make you feel right at home. The rustic decor, along with the stunning view of the mountains from the balcony, will make you want to never leave.

Run by a family who lives next door, you have your privacy while also easy access to any help if needed. The dad also makes amazing pizza, which you now can order after a day of exploring! All of them are delicious.

Chic apartment close to it all

If you’re looking for a cozy and well-located apartment in Teresópolis, look no further than this. The apartment boasts stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains, providing a peaceful and picturesque backdrop for your stay.

Not only does this apartment offer breathtaking views, but it is also located just a short walk away from the city center, giving you easy access to all the best restaurants, shops, and attractions that Teresópolis has to offer. Plus, with its comfortable furnishings and modern amenities, you’ll feel right at home from the moment you step inside.

Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or a solo adventure, this apartment is the perfect place to call home during your stay in Teresópolis.

The Culinary Scene: Where To Eat In Teresópolis

While the landscapes is the main attraction here, you’ll fall in love with the gastronomy too! Choose between:

  • Small botecos with some of the best feijoada
  • Fancy fine dining, from churrascarias to Italian and Japanese
  • Local markets with simple pop up shops
  • Lots of farm-to-table restaurants and family run options on the country side
  • Restaurants all about german and Swizz influences
  • Several small breweries and even a small cachaça production

From simple to exclusive – here are some of the best places to eat in Teresopolis.

Café & Grill Roca : Family-run, a new meaning to “food truck” dining

This family-run restaurant is housed in a van that’s been transformed into a cozy dining space, parked just outside the market in Teresopolis. Mariana, the owner, lives behind it and serves up delicious as-if-you’re-visiting-somone’s house food (which you kind of are) with her dad.

He cooks, while she makes the desserts.

Though the resturant opened in 2022, the family has been in the food business for 28 years with a stand on the market. The grandparents have contributed to different types of key businesses. The grandpa used to work as an attorney for one of the most well-known families in the area.

They always had a dream of opening their own restaurant.

The seating area, made of wooden logs, is full of personality and the traditional Samba music adds to the vibrant atmosphere that will make you want to stay awhile. When I pass by, the restaurant dosn’t even have a sign yet (“don’t worry, we’ll fix that soon”). It’s still packed with locals and visitors alike, drawn in by the delicious food and warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Don’t miss the famous moqueca or the desserts, like the pineapple cake, so delicious!

La Cremerie – A paradise for cheese lovers on the countryside

La Cremerie is a cheese lover’s paradise. Located on the charming countryside, the places feels a bit as live snapshot from the Little House on the Prairie.

The restaurant, founded in 1998 by Reinaldo, started as a goat cheese production business in Teresópolis. After learning a lot from Chef Robert Darrot, Reinaldo enrolled in culinary school and won a cooking competition with his famous Cordeiro Serrano dish, a delicious recipe that with lamb shoulder, goat cheese, rostie potatoes, and mushrooms.

Reinaldo’s passion for cheese led him to attend the famous Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris, where he learned the secrets of French cuisine. From that point on, La Cremerie’s menu was transformed, incorporating French touches and creative dishes featuring goat cheese, such as the famous Cromesquis de Ste Maure (breaded goat cheese with sesame), Caprino cheese croquettes, and the signature Salade Chèvre Chaud with gratiné Crottin goat cheese.

From the cheese platter, to the mains (lamb) the wine, and the dessert (chocolate) – everything is amazing.

La Cremerie is open from Thursday to Sunday and holidays for lunch and dinner. The place is on the countryside and super charming, perfect to walk around, watch animals, and relax. They recently opened a café and will start offering accommodation in the near future.

Kanton Bier – Swizz inspired with great craft beer and food

If you’re a craft beer enthusiast, you don’t want to miss Cervezeria Kanton. A brewery run by Hans, a Swiss expat who fell in love with Brazil (and his Brazilian now wife). He’s been living in Brazil for more than 10 years. From Niteroi and the fast pace in Rio, they eventually settled in Teresopolis. What started as a bistro, expanded into their own craft beer.

The interior of the brewery is unique, with vibrant colors and a cozy atmosphere. Glass walls straight into the beer production area gets you even more into th vibe.

Kanton produces about 1200 liters of beer per month. I try the IPA and the wheat beer, both delicious! I also have a, a speciality of the house, with a Hugo cocktail.

Cervezeria Kanton wil soonl move to a new location next to Casa Video, where they will have an outdoor terrace. Be sure to check out their Facebook page for more information! And if you’re ever in Teresopolis, don’t miss the chance to enjoy their delicious beers and cuisine.

Donna Tê Gastronomia – Authentic Italian food with views

Donna Te is an authentic Italian restaurant located in the heart of Teresópolis, run by Vanja since 2014. Vanja is not only passionate about Italian cuisine, but she’s also the president of the Association of Gastronomy in Teresópolis.

The restaurant is not very visible from the outside, but once you enter and take the elevator up, you’ll find a simple yet cozy interior with relaxing music and a great view of the main square.

The menu at Donna Te ranges from salads to executive menus and is open for lunch from Monday to Saturday. The restaurant attracts locals and tourists alike, and it’s not hard to see why. I tried the Talhamin a Paillard plate with tagliatelle with a glass of wine. I’ve spent a lot of time in Italy and eating here takes me back for a while.

Donna Te’s quality, service and view set it apart from other restaurants in the area. If you’re a fan of Italian cuisine and want to watch life go by while enjoying a delicious meal, make sure to check out Donna Te.

Novilho de Oro – 35 years of experience with quality churrasco

Novilho de Ouro is a traditional steakhouse in Teresópolis that has been serving high-quality meat for over 35 years. Their menu features a variety of cuts, my favorites are the Picanha and Bife de Chorizo.

In addition to their delicious meats, Novilho de Ouro offers a Japanese buffet with a selection of sushi, sashimi, and other Japanese specialties. As one of the locals who recommend me to go here puts it: They do it all well!

They also have a wide range of drinks, the caipirinhas are delicious.

The restaurant has a warm and welcoming atmosphere with a rustic decor that creates a cozy ambiance. The staff is attentive and friendly, providing excellent service to guests.

Novilho de Ouro is open for lunch and dinner every day, and also offer catering services for events and parties. With their commitment to quality and tradition, it’s a must-visit for meat lovers and anyone looking for a great dining experience in Teresópolis.

Nando Comida Descolada – Creative fusions

Nando Comida Descolada is a culinary hotspot known for its delicious and innovative dishes. The owner, Chef Alexandre Luz, is a professional chef with extensive knowledge of gastronomy and the art of combining flavors.

Whether you’re in the mood for a refreshing passion fruit caipirinha, lunch or dinner, Nando Comida Descolada has got you covered. The menu features a variety of national and international dishes. Whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner for two, some solo quality time, or a night out with friends, Nando Comida Descolada is the perfect spot.

Bar do Rangel – The best feijoada in town

Bar do Rangel is a must-visit spot to try the best feijoada in town. With its authentic vibe and ice-cold beer, it’s the perfect spot to come and enjoy lunch with friends or family on the weekend. The owner, an icon in the local community, is known for his friendly and welcoming style, taking the time to chat with customers and make them feel at home.

The bar has a cozy atmosphere, with a few tables scattered around the space. Despite its small size, it’s always buzzing with locals who come here to enjoy the delicious food and drinks. One customer even said they’ve been coming here for 20 years.

Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, you’re sure to feel at home at Bar do Rangel.

Mad Brew – Craft beer and meat Argentinian style

Mad Brewery not only serves their own craft beer, but also offers delicious meats cooked to perfection. The service is top-notch and the atmosphere is always happening full of energy.

I start with a small beer tasting. They have 7 different types.

As starters, I try the croquettes. Tasty but not mind-blowing. The chorizo steak Argentinian style levels up the whole experience. It’s so delicious, same quality as in Argentina. The chimichurri sauce, farofa, and house salsa complement it perfectly.

Finish off with the banana toffee dessert. The waiter tells me it’s amazing and I can only agree.

In addition to their beer and food, they also offer gin and cachaca from the area.

The restaurant has two floors and is always packed on weekends, so make sure to plan ahead or be prepared to wait a bit. They recently opened a venue in Ipanema – and if they continue like this, I’m sure there will be many more in the future.

Rainoy Restaurante – Delicious picanha

Rainoy Restaurante is a hidden gem located in a mall, offering high-quality food perfect for any occasion. While the atmosphere might not be the main draw since it’s located inside a mall, the food keep on making people come back.

During daytime, it’s cozier with plenty of people coming in for lunch. At night, delivery is most common since the mall is closed. I try the picanha and it’s so juicy. I also have a brownie for dessert.

Founded by a creative entrepreneur who previously worked in banking, Rainoy started as a delivery-only business in the founder’s apartment during the pandemic. As it gained popularity, the business expanded to a physical location, now employing 25 people, including six motorboys delivery drivers dedicated to ensuring quick delivery.

Rainoy has already opened a second venue and is planning to open a restaurant with a charming vibe in the future. In the future, the team would love to grow the concept further, and with the passion and attention to details, I’m sure they will do great.

Jaya Culinaria Natural – Delicious vegan food

Jaya Culinaria is a cozy, small vegan restaurant that spans two floors. Situated on a side street, it’s a great spot for people watching. It’s full of personality, with small quotes promoting values like happiness and healthy nutrition. They also sells products, from snacks to cute decorations.

The owner has been vegan for 13 years and came to Teresopolis after her father decided to move here for the life quality. Before that, she gained experience working in the restaurant industry in New Zealand for 2 years. She then worked at Harry Burger, two vegetarian establishments, a spa, and completed a vegan course in São Paulo.

Together with her vegan husband, who she married in Teresopolis, they decided to open their own place to offer delicious, healthy vegan food based on science about nutrition.

Initially, the restaurant offered only buffet-style dining. When the pandemic hit, they changed their concept to a la carte dining to better represent their values of sustainability etc. Their menu features 5 dishes that change regularly (daily specials + a vegan hamburger).

One of their signature dishes is Polpetone. The texture is so creamy and you can feel that what you’re eating is good for you. I also try a tea (bisco with cinnamon) and a delicious brownie with ice cream. People enter as customers and leave as friends. A great stop as you’re exploring the centre of Teresópolis!

Bombar – No frills, a local favorite for lunch

Bombar is a small and cozy boteco in town, with only 7 tables. Run by Marcio since 2010, when he bought the bar and started working there alone for 24 hours a day. Nowadays, he only opens for lunch, but the food is still as delicious and comforting as ever.

I try the Parmeggina do Frango, which came with a side of creamy potato puree. Simple but full of flavor, as having lunch at a friend’s house. Many locals come to Bombar Marcio. One of them tell me he has been a regular customer for 12 years.

The menu of the day is available on Facebook, and Marcio also sends it every morning on WhatsApp to his customers. If you’re looking for a simple and tasty meal in a friendly atmosphere, Bombar Marcio is definitely worth a visit.

Barão Terê – Local lunch buffet style

Barão Terê is a charming local restaurant that offers a delicious homemade buffet-style lunch. The food is made with care and attention to detail, using fresh and local ingredients. The restaurant has a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect place to enjoy a casual meal with family and friends.

Barão Terê is highly recommended by locals and tourists alike. The buffet offers a wide variety of options, including vegetarian and vegan dishes.

On the restaurant’s Facebook page, you can find photos of their dishes and updates on their daily menu. Barão Terê is a great place to experience the authentic flavors of Brazilian cuisine in a warm, casual, and welcoming environment.

Hortênsia Cafeteria e Empório Mineiro – The best from Minas

Cafe Minas is a charming cafe run by a couple who share a heartwarming story of reunited love. They had their first kiss at the age of 13, but lost touch until they reunited a year ago and moved in together just 20 days later.

Their love for Teresópolis and passion for cooking led them to start the cafe in 2022. They were inspired to open it after not finding any good coffee or special sandwiches at the local feria. The cafe quickly became popular among the locals, and on weekends, it’s packed with tourists who come to town.

The menu features delicious cakes and typical products such as the “Bolo Milo Cremoso” and the “Sandwich Minero”, which includes gele pineapple, lomo cerdo, mozzarella se Macari, and more. Everything is inspired by the Minas Gerais region (known for having some of the best gastronomy in Brazil).

The space is charming, the service makes you feel at home, and the food is so delicious. If you’re looking for a cozy cafe to enjoy a nice meal and a cup of coffee, Cafe Minas is definitely worth a visit. You can also buy delicious products from Minas here, like cachaca and cheese.

11 Great Family-Friendly Things to Do in Teresópolis, Brazil

by Matt · Published September 30, 2023 · Updated October 6, 2023

A mountaintop getaway, security in teresópolis, how we got there and where we stayed, where to shop, a map of recommendations, 1. parc magique amusement park, 2. finger of god, teresópolis entrance, guapimirim entrance, 4. cachoeira dos frades, 5. museo do futuro, 6. feirarte and the big magic train, 7. organic farmer’s market, 8. lose yourself on a drive through the country, 9. pedra da tartaruga, 10. take a day trip to petropolis, 11. visit an ashram.

Never heard of Teresópolis? Neither had we. So how did we choose this no-name mountain town to kick off our family gap year in South America?

First of all, we find rural destinations more interesting, pleasurable and safe. We already had plane tickets to Rio de Janeiro . So I got on Google Maps and clicked around the periphery of that popular destination. It wasn’t long before I stumbled upon Teresópolis. I was drawn in by the small city surrounded by mountains and natural beauty. Pricing for vacation rentals was amazing! We found a long list of options well within our price range for a month stay. It was love at first sight.

In our three-year planning phase for our big adventure, we had collected a sizable must-see destination list gleaned from news articles, research, and Windows lock screens. Two of them, Serra dos Órgãos and Guapimirim, were nearby. This place had everything! And that is how we decided to spend the honeymoon phase of our gap year in Teresópolis.

You don’t see many international tourists. Nevertheless, this mountain town with a chill vibe is where Brazilians get away from the noise, soot and crime of Rio. It is also the home of the national soccer team .

As you will see in this post, the city and surrounding area offer unique — and delightfully weird — attractions that amount to an unforgettable experience.

looking out over gated community

If I were to rate traveler security anxiety on a scale of one to ten — one allowing you to leave your cell phone on the table while you use the toilet at a coffee shop, and ten being aware at all times, never letting a stranger see your cell phone or cash, and sticking to a few well-traveled streets — Teresópolis ranks at a two or three. (I’d give Rio an eleven . These ratings are subjective, by the way.)

If you want a more objective measure , Teresópolis is the safest city in Rio de Janeiro state and ranks an impressive tenth for safety in the entire country.

In other words, after our first few days in Rio, we could let our guard down and relax.

Of course, you should never be reckless as a tourist. We still took reasonable precautions. We locked our car and didn’t leave valuables on the dash, or on coffee shop tables. But living in the Chicago suburbs, those basic precautions are a matter of habit. The important thing was that we were able to be out at all times of day, have fun and interact with locals like normal folks.

We stayed a whole month at a three story home with one outdoor and two indoor kitchens in a gated community for about $1,200. (We were there in July, their winter and low season, so prices may vary). The gated community came with top-notch amenities: a gym, a heated pool, a game room, and a beautiful shared park with the typical Brazilian grills, just to name a few. Most importantly, there were other children for our boys to play with. A group of kids would make a daily stop by our house to invite our boys to play soccer or tag.

Car rentals were a great price this time of year as well. We spent between $300 and $400 a month for a compact, manual transmission (again, off-season prices). We rented from Movida , and would rent from them again.

Driving in Brazil is not for the faint of heart. There is the option to take buses and taxis, which are very economical. But we wanted the freedom of a car. Getting out of Rio was hairy, to say the least. But once outside of the city limits, we cruised on well-maintained highways. Once you get into the mountains, the roadway narrows, you might encounter a pothole here or there, and you’ll probably get stuck in construction or behind a slow moving truck. That said, we were glad we had the car.

kids hanging out at gated community

If you plan to stay a while (and you should), you’ll need groceries. It can be difficult to find all that you’re looking for (things like cream cheese, real butter, and baking soda). But we found a few big stores that made finding things a bit easier.

Green Fruit supermarket is high end and a bit pricey. But it had a lot of the difficult-to-find items we were looking for and the products were all high-quality.

Regina Supermercados is large and had most of what we were looking for as well. It was more price-friendly than Green Fruit. As a bonus, it was a stone’s throw from the Feira Agroecológica (organic farmer’s market, open on Saturday mornings) , making it easy to kill two birds with one stone.

Lojas Americanas is for every other random thing you need. This is the closest thing you’ll get to an all-purpose store like Walmart or Dollar General in rural Brazil.

Eleven Child-Friendly Activities in Teresópolis

It is not hard to find things to do. You are surrounded by nature reserves, trails, rock formations, and waterfalls. I would encourage you to just click around on a map and find random destinations, or ask locals once you arrive.

But if your time is limited and you want to hit the highlights — or want to get our kid-friendly take — then read on.

This is the only activity on this list we failed to do. But since this post is from the perspective of a family with kids, I couldn’t fail to mention it. The condition for going was that our five-year-old stop sucking his thumb. That didn’t happen, so we didn’t go (we’re such wonderful parents, I know). Anyway, our family isn’t that into amusement parks, so no one was too put out.

From what I understand the park is small, but a fun way for a kid to spend half a day. Maybe you’ll even succeed where we failed to use it as leverage to control improve your kids.

To see the Dedo de Deus (Finger of God), just drive to Teresópolis on a clear day. You can’t miss it. There are several lookout points ( mirantes ) where you can take selfies or family photos. Again, hard to miss.

If you want more effort and drama leading up to the big reveal, take the Post Card Trail ( Mirante Cartão Postal ) in the national park. Our five- and eight-year-old boys did it with energy to spare. Our three-year-old, however, complained the entire way. It is a moderately difficult hike for kids due to length (about an hour each way) and the rugged incline. But totally doable and good for character development.

You access that trail at the Serra dos Órgãos Teresópolis Park Entrance ( Sede Teresópolis ).

3. Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos

The national park is huge. It contains everything from small loops and roadside attractions to epic multi-day treks through the interior of the park. Clearly, if you have children in tow, you will choose the former. There are other sites where you can learn about the more epic treks.

Entrance is free. All they ask is that you register with a valid ID (they let me in with an Illinois driver’s license).

From Teresópolis, the simplest place to start is the Teresópolis Entrance. There is parking and an information center right at the gate. Nearby, there are beautiful picnic areas nestled in thick forest. Several trail heads originate there, including the aforementioned Mirante Cartão Postal , where you can get stunning view of the Dedo de Deus .

If you drive up farther into the park, the Trilha Suspensa is a flat boardwalk and a very easy trail for kids.

If you’ve squeezed every ounce of juice out of the Teresópolis entrance and want more, the Guapimirim entrance is about half hour from town. Though it doesn’t show it on GoogleMaps, the road continues in past the entrance gate toward the Soberbo River. Along the road, you can drive right up to picnic areas, river pools, and trail heads that take you a short distance to waterfalls and hidden pools.

family hiking to cachoeira dos frades

If there was ever a place that fit my image of paradise, this was it. There is no entrance fee or registration. Just drive up, park on the side of the road, and enjoy.

After seeing the waterfall, you can hike up beyond it and there are more natural pools and water slides.

If you continue driving into the valley, the views are amazing. There is a point where the road passes through an open gate that says private property, but it’s ok to keep going (we were a bit confused on that point the first time). We were told that if you follow the road all the way to the end, you reach a trail head with views to Tres Picos.

And while you’re visiting Cachoeira dos Frades, if you’re into New Age (or just want a delightfully weird experience), drive or walk up to Museu do Futuro. For a fee, you can get a tour of the facilities and learn about sound healing and various other alternative therapies that put you in touch with the universe’s energies. Our host was Mukti, a sweet old man with a gentle persona. For me, it was good Portuguese listening practice.

It’s also possible to stay overnight in their moon- or heart-shaped rooms. I don’t think you’ll find them on any booking sites, so you will need to contact them directly using the info on their website . The rooms are very basic, but the natural surroundings are out of this world. Massage, sound healing, and other therapies are available upon request. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind, off-the-beaten-path, spiritual retreat within a short hike to a gorgeous waterfall, this place might be for you.

This is Teresópolis’ huge outdoor market and fair. It’s virtually required if you are a first time visitor.

Vendors sell everything from clothing to local treats. An outdoor food court serves very inexpensive mounds of barbequed meat. Zany impromptu shows feature dancing superheroes and cartoon characters. And don’t forget one of the main attractions, the carnivalesque magic train that picks up riders near the food court and winds through Teresópolis blasting Brazilian hip hop.

The fair is open on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 10am. It is alternatively called Feirarte , A Ferinha , or Ferinha do Alto . They all refer to the same event (helpful when asking for directions or following road signs).

To us, it was all a bit too loud and crazy. The vendors and restaurant staff were aggressive in badgering passersby for business. But that’s just us, and we’re still glad we tried it.

farmers market

Not to be confused with the more well-known Feirarte or Ferinha do Alto, the Organic Farmer’s market ( A Feira Orgânica or Feira Agroecológica ) is small and laid back. If you ask people on the street, as we did, they might think you mean the more popular Feirarte .

We loved this market and visited weekly. After the boisterous Feirarte , you might think this one a bit dull, depending on your tastes. To each their own.

This was a very pleasant place to shop, try local street food and meet people. Nobody pushed you to buy anything. A small playground allowed the boys to blow off some energy while Liuan browsed fresh veggies and chitchatted with the farmer ladies in Portuguese. They also had a live band, making the ambiance festive.

They run the market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. But you should definitely go Saturday. It’s pretty dead on Wednesdays.

Who doesn’t love a lazy drive through mountains and farmland?

If you set your navigation to one of the many supposed trails on Google Maps, your odds of actually finding it are no better than a coin flip. That’s what we did the day we ended up driving through one of the most stunning and untrodden landscapes we had laid eyes on in Brazil.

We never found the trail we had intended to hike, Sete Torres . So we tried navigating toward another supposed trail. Before arriving at the point on the map, we parked our car on the side of the washed out dirt road. We thought it best not to push our little rented Fiat Mobi any further. We continued on foot for about an hour before we realized there was never going to be any trail. This local farm road was the trail. I ran back, got the car, and carefully drove up the mountain. My family was on the other side, where I had left them.

We set our navigation to a point back in town and continued on the path we had chosen. We wound our way down the mountain, every so often glimpsing the bucolic grazing land below. Every so often, we would encounter a friendly local on a motorcycle or tractor. This spontaneous driving tour was one of our most memorable days.

In case you want to follow in our footsteps, here’s the route we took:

where we left our car on dirt road

It’s literally a huge turtle-shaped rock. Thus the name. The trail to get there goes up the side of a mountain, but it’s relatively short and well-groomed. There is no fee, but you register at the entrance.

As far as I know, there is no parking lot. We just parked on the street below the entrance. Despite how overcrowded an attraction like this would be in the States, there were only a handful of hikers. When we got there, we were alone.

You can easily walk up to the top of the rock. Just be careful that the kids stay away from the edge! The views from on top are incredible.

If you continue along the path, you’ll find a playground and some public bathrooms. With our three boys in tow, it was a perfect final stop to round out our visit.

You will have to read someone else’s blog to find out all there is to do in Petropolis because we only spent a morning there. The city lies on the other side of the Serra dos Órgãos national park and takes about an hour to drive. It is the other cute laid-back mountain town in this region.

We visited the Imperial Museum, which was home to the first emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro I. That is how “Petropolis” got its name. It was named by the second emperor, Dom Pedro II. His wife was named Teresa Cristina. So you can guess where the name Teresópolis came from.

Brazil’s political history can be difficult to grasp. Brazil gained its independence when the prince, Dom Pedro I, broke away from his father, who was the king of Portugal. And thus he became emperor of Brazil. That to me, sounds like one rebellious son gaining his independence, not a whole nation. But then, the second emperor, Dom Pedro II, was deposed, even though everyone liked him. After that, the country flipflopped between a dizzying series of military dictatorships and democratic regimes.

Frankly, the kids found it boring. But Liuan and I found it fascinating.

ashram near Teresopolis

I would have never associated the mountains of rural Brazil with the Hindu religion, but there are two Hindu ashrams in the vicinity. And the both welcome visitors. We chose one that happened to be on the same rural road as our vacation rental, Ashram Vrajabhumi.

It felt a bit strange showing up just to look around, but the people there made us feel like welcome guests. They invited us to come back the next weekend for a big festival. And so we attended it. It was unexpectedly similar to a church service and picnic, adding in a little procession involving the priest plopping sweet syrupy doughballs in people’s mouths along the way.

Parque Nacional Serra dos Órgaos – Teresópolis Entrance

Top choice in Rio de Janeiro State

About 6km south of Teresópolis, off the BR-116 Rio–Teresópolis highway, you'll find the main (and most accessible) entrance to magnificent Parque Nacional Serra dos Órgaos , which offers some of Brazil's most dramatic hiking, climbing and mountain scenery. From this point of entry, visitors can access both the park's tamer lower section – perfect for a picnic with its walking trails, waterfalls, natural swimming pools and tended lawns and gardens – and the wilder upper section, with its challenging high country trails.

From the Teresópolis entrance, the road extends into the park as far as Barragem Beija Flor. From here, lower section visitors can continue up the 800m Trilha Mozart Catão (one hour round trip from the park road) up to the Mirante Alexandre Oliveira (1100m) for nice views of Teresópolis – or follow the park's newest trail, the 1.2km Trilha Cartão Postal , up to a higher viewpoint (1320m) for spectacular perspectives on the distinctive Dedo de Deus and the entire Serra dos Órgãos range.

There are also several good day hikes for visitors who wish to explore the park's more rugged upper section. The highlight is the Trilha Pedra do Sino – a strenuous roundtrip of about eight hours from the end of the park road (R$52 trail fee). The trail passes Cachoeira Veu da Noiva , the vegetation changes from rainforest to grassland, and the reward is a panoramic view stretching all the way to Rio de Janeiro and the Baía de Guanabara.

To reach the park entrance from downtown Teresópolis, take the ‘Soberbo’ bus (R$4). Alternatively, take the more frequent ‘Alto’ bus and get off at the Praçinha do Alto, from where it’s a 10-minute walk south to the park’s main entrance. Both buses can be caught at multiple stops along Teresópolis' main drag, Av Almirante Lúcio Meira. A taxi ride from town to the park entrance costs about R$30.
