Disney Cruises from Los Angeles
Disney Cruise Line is a family favorite, and the Disney Wonder sailed from Los Angeles in the past. You would think that there would be Disney cruises out of LA because of proximity to Disneyland, but that is not the case.
The Disney Wonder's amenities include the industry's best youth clubs, multiple dining options (including adult exclusive), and lots of great Disney live shows.
There are no cruises from LA scheduled. There are several Disney Cruises from San Diego .

They used to depart from the World Cruise Center at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro , but now only stop in San Diego as they reposition.
Which Disney Ships Depart from Los Angeles?
The Disney Wonder , which used to offer cruises from the Port of Los Angeles, has moved its Southern California port of call to San Diego , so there are not currently any Disney Cruise offerings out of Los Angeles or Long Beach, but that can always change, so keep an eye on their cruise schedule. The art nouveau décor of the Disney Wonder incorporates iconic Disney characters along with nautical wave themes. A bronze statue of Ariel, from The Little Mermaid greets guests in the lobby of the ship.
Where Can You Cruise on A Disney Ship from Southern California?

In Disney proxy battle, second firm urges shareholders to elect Nelson Peltz

One week before a highly anticipated shareholder vote, Walt Disney Co. sustained another blow as a second advisory firm recommended that investors elect billionaire Nelson Peltz to the entertainment giant’s board of directors.
Peltz, the Trian Fund Management founder, has gained steam in the closing weeks of his proxy campaign against Disney’s board.
On Wednesday, advisory firm Egan-Jones recommended that investors dump two longtime Disney board members — Maria Elena Lagomasino and Michael B.G. Froman — to make room for Peltz and his running mate, former Disney executive Jay Rasulo. Last week, the influential Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. recommended Disney investors elect Peltz to the board but withheld an endorsement for Rasulo.
Earlier, a major proxy advisory firm, Glass Lewis, recommended that shareholders vote for Disney’s slate of 12 director nominees, rejecting both Peltz and Rasulo as well as three candidates running on a competing slate from Blackwells Capital.
The contentious proxy campaign has become the latest headache for Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger.
Unlike in his first tenure, Iger has rushed to contain one brush fire after the next since he returned to the Burbank company in late 2022.
He reorganized the management structure, slashed costs and has tried to tackle several troubling trends, including accelerated pay-TV cord cutting, which has hurt Disney’s profitable linear television business. The company is still attempting to recover from COVID-19-related closures that stymied Disney’s theme parks, cruise lines and theatrical business and from the tumultuous tenure of former CEO Bob Chapek.

In a Disney snub, Nelson Peltz lands major endorsement in proxy fight
Proxy advisory firm ISS cites Disney’s bungled succession planning in recommending a vote for Peltz. Disney has campaigned against the Trian hedge funder.
March 21, 2024
The Trian group holds more than $3.5 billion of Disney common stock, including the shares owned by former Marvel Entertainment Chair Ike Perlmutter.
“Disney has lost its way over the past decade. Shareholders have suffered greatly, losing tens of billions of dollars in value,” Trian has said on its Restore the Magic website. “We believe the root cause of Disney’s underperformance is a Board that lacks focus, alignment, and accountability.”
Egan-Jones agreed with some of Trian’s assessments.
“We believe that there are compelling reasons to support the Trian Nominees,” Egan-Jones said in its recommendation report, ticking off several complaints about Disney’s operations and priorities, including “the unnecessary and extremely dangerous entrance of the company and its management into the killing fields of the culture wars.”
Disney sparred with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over the state’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law and changes DeSantis made to Disney’s special development district in Florida.
On Wednesday, Disney and Florida reached an agreement to abandon a state court fight over Disney’s authority to develop its central Florida resort district. The settlement came after almost two years of litigation that began after DeSantis took action to topple Disney’s hand-picked district members after Disney spoke out against the Florida law that DeSantis championed.
Critics have also blasted recent Disney movies for leaning into social messages, such as equity and inclusion.
Egan-Jones said, in its report, that Disney’s struggle with Florida was problematic. It also criticized the company’s business model, which it said was “built for the last decade, but not forward looking and flexible enough to ensure success in the next.”
‘We have to go to war’: The man battling Disney’s Bob Iger — and increasingly long odds
For the second time in a year, activist investor Nelson Peltz is battling Bob Iger and Disney to shake up the company and nab two board seats.
Feb. 26, 2024
The current board “appears cut off and unwilling to engage with investors and the broader market,” Egan-Jones said. The firm also lamented what it described as Disney’s “desire to protect the status quo for as long as possible and at all costs [leading to] mediocre financial performance and the resultant lower valuation.”
ISS made its recommendation, in part, because of Disney’s bungled succession planning and poor stock performance in recent years.
However, Disney’s stock has gained more than 30% so far this year, an indication that Wall Street likes the changes made by Iger, improvements in the company’s financials and a restored dividend.
Iger has gathered support from big names, including former Disney Chair Michael Eisner, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, “Star Wars” creator George Lucas and the heirs of company founders Walt and Roy Disney , including Abigail Disney , Walt’s great-niece and a critic of the company’s executive compensation practices in the past.
“The underlying strength of our company and the remarkable amount of work we have accomplished in such a brief amount of time has allowed us to move beyond a period of fixing and begin building our businesses again,” Iger said in a letter to shareholders as part of the proxy campaign.
“As Disney’s annual meeting is one week away, it is important that shareholders vote TODAY,” Trian said in a statement. “Every vote is important.”

Disney Just Revealed Details About Its Brand-new Cruise Ship — With a Magical New Theme
Disney Destiny will be heroes and villains themed, scheduled for delivery in 2025
Courtesy of Disney
Life is full of tough choices, isn’t it? But soon, cruisers won’t have to choose between good and evil as Disney Cruise Line just announced its new ship: Disney Destiny .
Disney shared that the ship design will be themed around legendary Disney heroes and villains, including those of Pixar and Marvel. The vessel will draw “on the legacy of beloved Disney stories, characters, and theme park attractions, to forge a cruise vacation that will empower guests to embrace their own calling aboard every unforgettable voyage.”
Disney Destiny is the third vessel in the liner’s Triton class of ships. It will join the Disney Wish , which debuted in the summer of 2022, and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure .

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line, said in a press release shared with Travel + Leisure . “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”
A partnership between Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering, the “teams were inspired by the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their purpose when developing the Disney Destiny .” Ship spaces, Broadway-style entertainment, and experiences will be inspired by some of Walt Disney Animation Studios biggest films, including “Hercules,” “The Lion King,” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”
Disney unveiled exterior images and a brand-new filigree artwork for the bow of the ship, which is a Disney Cruise Line signature design tradition. The image depicts Minnie Mouse in a commanding, hero-inspired pose while donning her signature bow, along with a cape.
The Disney Destiny is currently being built at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. No announcements have been made on its itinerary or on-sale bookings.

Disney reveals the name and theme of its newest cruise ship
Disney Cruises’ next ship promises adventure on the high seas
Fans of Disney cruises are in for a new adventure, as Disney Cruise Lines has revealed new details about its forthcoming ship, the Disney Destiny . A keel laying ceremony, a tradition meant to bring good luck, was held at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, marking the next milestone in the Destiny’s construction.
The theme for this new ship will be “Heroes and Villains,” drawing inspiration from Disney’s timeless tales of opposing forces of light and dark that drive characters to rise to their purpose. Voyagers will be empowered to embrace their calling as they embark on an unforgettable journey. Through the ship's spaces, experiences and entertainment, guests will encounter heroes and villains alike, from stories including The Lion King , Hercules and 101 Dalmations .
Artwork on the bow of the ship depicts Minnie Mouse, in valiant regalia, striking a heroic pose. Her cape waves majestically in the breeze as she leads guests toward their vacation destinies.
“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”
The Destiny is scheduled to be complete by 2025, and eager voyagers can find more information about the ship and booking options at disneycruise.com .

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.
Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.
Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.
Viking Sky sails to the Mediterranean, Europe, Central America and more. The ship also offers world voyages.
Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.
One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.
Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.
Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and more.
U.S. News Insider Tip: The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have the same great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

Launched in April 2016, Viking Sea is the second vessel in Viking's Ocean Cruises fleet. Carrying 930 passengers, the ship's small size is designed to allow direct access to smaller ports around the world.
Viking Sea's staterooms range from 270-square-foot Veranda Staterooms to the 1,448-square-foot Owner's Suite. All accommodations include balconies, flat-screen TVs, king-sized beds, complimentary Wi-Fi access and bathrooms with heated floors. The ship's facilities include a fitness center, a Nordic spa (complete with a snow grotto), an outdoor gym and yoga area, a theater and a one-of-a-kind infinity pool on the stern of the ship that gives the illusion of swimming in the ocean.
When you work up an appetite, the Viking Sea offers a variety of dining options to quell your hunger. They range from casual Norwegian cuisine at Mamsen's to alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace. Recent passengers report a stellar onboard experience, describing the food as delicious, the ship as comfortable and the service as top-notch.
Viking Sea sails to ports across Alaska, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and the West Indies.
Carnival Panorama
A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.
Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.
Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.
Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Meanwhile, Family Harbor accommodations are located next to the ship's Family Harbor Lounge and afford guests special perks, such as a free evening of babysitting and complimentary kids meals in the onboard specialty restaurants.
Sailing from Los Angeles , the ship cruises to destinations in Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas . It also departs from Singapore for transpacific voyages.
Carnival Radiance
Carnival Radiance (previously Carnival Victory) set sail in December 2021 after a full transformation. The ship, which holds 2,984 guests and 1,108 crew members, boasts plenty of fun indoors and outdoors for cruisers of all ages.
Carnival Radiance features a ropes course, waterslides, a mini-golf course, dive-in movies in the evening and a sports area for activities like soccer, basketball, volleyball and boxing. The ship also offers a kids club for youths ages 2 to 17. The pool is surrounded by lounge chairs – perfect for relaxing – and those seeking additional quiet space can spend some time at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat. Inside, the spa, the piano bar, the comedy club and the performance event venue, which features musicals, concerts and more, round out some of Carnival Radiance's most popular offerings. Dining options (14 eateries in total, including a Chef's Table experience) abound on this ship as well: Cruisers can enjoy casual fare at Big Chicken or Guy's Burger Joint, or sit down for a more upscale meal at Cucina del Capitano, Bonsai Sushi or the Steakhouse.
Staterooms aboard the ship include Interior (porthole and picture window choices are available), Ocean View, Balcony and Suite category options. Carnival Radiance sets sail from Los Angeles to destinations in Hawaii and Mexico .
Seabourn Quest
Seabourn Quest, which launched in June 2011, is one of the smallest ships in Seabourn's fleet. It can fit up to 458 passengers and about one crew member for every cruiser. It is virtually identical to the Seabourn Sojourn and Seabourn Odyssey .
Seabourn Quest differs from the line's newer ships in terms of accommodations, as it offers some Ocean View Suites with porthole windows instead of verandas. However, all cabins still come equipped with amenities like flat-screen TVs, designer toiletries, personalized stationery, Egyptian cotton linens and in-suite bars stocked with your preferred refreshments.
Outside your suite, you can enjoy a range of pursuits, such as spa and salon treatments, free fitness classes, a nine-hole putting green and two swimming pools. Additionally, Seabourn Quest offers complimentary water sports equipment rentals at its Watersports Marina in select destinations.
Once you've worked up an appetite, sit for a meal at one of the ship's four restaurants, including the main dining room and The Grill, a steakhouse helmed by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller. And for evening entertainment, you'll have access to a variety of bars, plus a casino, a dance club and the Grand Salon, where cabaret performances, comedy shows and more are hosted nightly.
Quest sails to and from destinations around the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Northern Europe and more.
U.S. News Insider Tip: The aft pool on Deck 5 is a hidden gem, often overlooked by most passengers who tend to gather at the main pool. – Dana Freeman, Contributor
As part of Oceania's fleetwide revamp, Regatta was completely redesigned in September 2019. Passengers in Veranda Staterooms and Suites will enjoy verandas and spaces ranging from 216 to 1,000 square feet, while Inside and Ocean View cabins are smaller. The ship now offers solo staterooms for those who are traveling alone. No matter which you choose, all staterooms are equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, plus all-new furnishings and marble bathrooms.
The 670 passengers will receive Oceania's signature service, with 400 crew members catering to guests' needs. Recent cruisers noted they rarely encountered crowds in the ship's public areas. The atmosphere aboard Regatta is decidedly adult, as the ship caters to older, affluent cruisers.
Entertainment varies from nightly musical performances to table games at the casino. Dining is also diverse: Regatta offers five venues ranging from the formal dining room to a casual grill. All-new plant-based menu items are also available.
Regatta sails to destinations in Mexico, Asia, Australia and more.
Seabourn Sojourn
The 458-passenger Seabourn Sojourn debuted in June 2010 and features all-suite accommodations. About 90% of the suites offer verandas, and all accommodations provide 24-hour room service, flat-screen TVs, bathrooms with dual sinks and a separate living area and bedroom. What's more, cruisers are welcomed with complimentary Champagne upon arrival and can enjoy a fruit basket that's refreshed daily. A suite stewardess is assigned to each cabin to assist with requests as well. Sojourn is virtually identical to its sister ships, Seabourn Odyssey and Seabourn Quest .
Outside the rooms, travelers can gamble at the casino, work up a sweat in the fitness center or relax at the spa. Those interested in soaking up the sun can snag a spot by one of two swimming pools or enjoy one of five hot tubs. Cruisers can also fuel their competitive juices with a round of shuffleboard or golf on the nine-hole putting green. When anchored, vacationers in select destinations can take advantage of the ship's water sports equipment, such as kayaks and paddle boats.
There are four dining venues to choose from on the Seabourn Sojourn, including casual and fine dining options. In the evening, cruisers can enjoy cocktails at one of the bars or dance under the stars. The ship's nearly 1-to-1 crew-to-passenger ratio means cruisers should expect exceptional service.
Sojourn sails to destinations in the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and the Mediterranean, as well as some trans-Atlantic sailings.
Norwegian Joy
Built in 2017, the 3,804-passenger, 1,821-crew-member Norwegian Joy was refurbished in 2020. Accommodation options include Inside, Oceanview and Balcony staterooms, as well as Suites, Concierge rooms (which come with concierge service) and The Haven cabins (which include 24-hour butler service and private sundecks).
There are 11 dining venues on board including eight specialty restaurants, the latter of which offers American, French, Japanese, Italian, Mexican and Thai cuisines. Complimentary restaurants include the ship's three main dining rooms.
Cruisers will find plenty of things to do on board, from shopping at duty-free stores and luxury boutiques to watching stand-up comedians. The ship also offers a spa, laser tag, a racetrack, a casino, mini-golf, a fitness center, two aqua parks and more.
Norwegian Joy sails from Miami , Los Angeles , New York , Panama City and Quebec City to ports across the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera, Bermuda and more.

Disney Cruises from San Diego: Everything You Need to Know
By: Author Leslie Harvey
Posted on Published: October 28, 2023
Share this!:
When embarking on a Disney Cruise, most travelers head to Florida or a city in Europe to start their trip. For many years, however, Disney Cruise Line has had at least one ship calling San Diego, California home for a portion of the year – a much more convenient cruise option for West Coast based travelers. My family recently sailed aboard a Disney Cruise that departed from San Diego, as it was an easy vacation coming from our home base in the San Francisco Bay Area.
We’ve sailed Disney Cruise Line before, and discovered that there are several unique features of Disney Cruises out of San Diego. If you are considering a DCL trip from San Diego as well, here are all the tips we picked up and everything else you need to know!
(Trips With Tykes uses affiliate links which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through links in this post. See our full disclosure policy linked in the menu at the bottom of this site.)
What Disney Cruise Line Ships Sail from San Diego & When?
For many years, cruises from San Diego were exclusively aboard the Disney Wonder . The Wonder is one of the older ships in Disney’s fleet. This ship would spend summers in Alaska and come south to San Diego in colder months to sail in fall, winter, and spring. There were not traditionally summer sailings out of San Diego aboard Disney Cruise Line.
Starting at the end of the summer 2023 Alaska season, Disney shook things up a bit. The Wonder headed to Australia for the first time. This repositioning created a little bit of a gap in the usual San Diego schedule. In October 2023, the Disney Magic (the sister ship to the Disney Wonder) came to San Diego via the Panama Canal to cover some of the fall season, but not the full length of the winter holidays (the ship departs San Diego in early December 2023). Several of the Disney Magic cruises are designated as Halloween on the High Seas or Very Merrytime sailings with special holiday decor and celebrations.
The Disney Wonder will, however, return from Australia in March 2024. It will again provide spring break sailings out of San Diego for a few months before heading to Alaska again for summer 2024.
There are no ships scheduled to be in port in fall of 2024 as the Wonder goes back to Australia and the Magic stays in Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean. But thankfully this San Diego hiatus appears to be only temporary. Disney just released spring 2025 itineraries, and the Wonder will once again return to San Diego in March, April, and May 2025!
Disney Cruise Itineraries from San Diego
Where can you travel to on San Diego Disney cruises? Nearly all of Disney’s cruises out of San Diego head down to ports in Baja California and the Mexican Riviera.
Unlike some ships in the DCL fleet which sail the same itinerary and same length of cruise over and over, the San Diego-Mexican Riviera cruises keep things interesting. There are itineraries as short as 2 nights, many more 3 and 4 night offerings, and quite a few 7-night cruises.
Shorter cruises don’t go as far south and hit Baja ports like Ensenada and/or Cabo San Lucas. Quite a few of the 4 day sailings also visit Catalina Island, California. The longer sailings cruise farther south and can reach Mazatlán and/or Puerto Vallarta on the Mexican Riviera. (For more on each port of call, keep reading below).
Our family’s cruise was a unique 5 day sailing, timed to maximize the long Easter weekend that many schools have on the holiday calendar. We had originally been booked on a somewhat different 7 night San Diego sailing for Thanksgiving week 2022, but had to cancel last minute due to illness . So we did the planning fully for a San Diego Disney Cruise twice!
There are of course a few repositioning cruise itineraries that start and end a ship’s time in San Diego. In 2023-early 2025, those include:
- Miami to San Diego via the Panama Canal (Disney Magic): October 2023 (already sailed)
- San Diego to Galveston via the Panama Canal (Disney Magic): December 2023
- Vancouver to San Diego (Disney Wonder): March 2024, May 2025
- San Diego to Vancouver (Disney Wonder): May 2024, May 2025
Weather & What to Pack for a San Diego Disney Cruise
Many people who aren’t from California have visions of hot beach weather and fun in the sun departing on a cruise out of Southern California. While San Diego can certainly have those kinds of days, the city isn’t always as warm as you might think.
San Diego actually has a pretty temperate climate. Temperatures average in the 60s and 70s during the day year round. But the city can be fogged in certain times of year, just like San Francisco! You’ll hear the term “June Gloom” bandied about, and the gloom happens in more than just June. In short, if you pack only bathing suits and tank tops for a San Diego cruise, you are going to be cold.
Ensenada and Catalina Island have nearly the same climate. Once you get as far south as Cabo San Lucas, however, you can count on much more tropical hot weather.
So plan clothes accordingly. We packed light layers for the more northern parts of our trip like a hoodie or a wrap for evenings. And we spent the southern parts in shorts, t-shirts, and bathing suits.
Disney Cruise Line has self-service laundry on every ship that is very reasonably priced and easy to use. So you can pack light for a Disney San Diego cruise, as we did, if you are willing to do a load or two.
What else should you pack for San Diego Disney sailings? I highly recommend seasickness medication and acupressure bands just in case, even if you aren’t someone who is bothered on Caribbean sailings. The Wonder and Magic are Disney’s smallest ships and the Pacific can be rough in open waters. We were all fine, but a few members of my family got a little queasy the last night of our cruise as the ship was rocking and rolling speeding back to San Diego from Ensenada.
See this complete Disney Cruise packing list for other must-haves.
Getting to Your Disney Cruise
A lot of guests aboard our sailing were based in Southern California and naturally just drove to the port. Traffic in the area can obviously be a significant factor (especially coming from the Los Angeles area). Be sure to consider and plan for that if you are coming in the same day of sailing. Our ship set sail at 4:00pm with the final boarding window starting around 2:30 or 3:00, so the critical cut off time arrives earlier than you’d think.
As a result, even many semi-locals may want to travel to San Diego the night before just in case. And that means staying in a hotel (more on that below). One advantage to this approach is that many area hotels will offer their guests a discounted parking package as part of the stay. And parking is a major factor that guests who are driving need to consider.
If you are driving in the same day, you need to arrange for parking otherwise on your own. The Port of San Diego keeps an updated list of long term parking options on its website . Some of these locations are within walking distance of the dock.
Coming from Northern California, we found cheap flights aboard our family’s favorite Southwest Airlines . San Diego has a pretty large international airport (SAN) located right near downtown, so it’s an incredibly easy and often inexpensive destination to fly in and out of. That said, ongoing construction in 2023-2024 has complicated things. Plan for ground transportation hiccups and longer lines as a result.
If you are going to fly to embark on any cruise, cruise lines and travel agents all highly recommend flying in the day before. Flight cancellations and air traffic control meltdowns are a constant reality in the current state of US air travel. Travelers who fly in the same day risk missing their ship’s departure time if even something pretty minor goes awry.
We flew in the morning before our sailing so we could get to spend a full day in San Diego before setting sail. From our home airport at Oakland (OAK), there are usually 5-10 San Diego flights a day (plus many more from nearby SFO and SJC and on other airlines). So we certainly could have risked it and flown in on an early morning flight the same day as our sailing. But why give yourself that stress?
If you are flying in to SAN for a Disney Cruise, you likely will not need a rental car in San Diego. It’s a cheap and quick rideshare or taxi ride to much of the city. Or arrange a shuttle with your travel agent or Disney directly if you prefer a pre-booked option. If you plan to explore San Diego before your cruise, much of it is walkable and Uber or Lyft will get you farther distances without the worry of paying for or finding parking.

Where to Stay Before (or After) a San Diego Cruise
If you plan to spend time in the city of San Diego before your cruise or if you smartly are just arriving in at least a day before the sailing date, you’ll need a hotel. There are hundreds of hotels in the San Diego area at every price point and luxury level, so there truly are no shortage of options. Many guests prefer to stay within walking distance of the port for easy boarding and luggage transportation, but others would prefer to be closer to a specific attraction or don’t mind staying farther afield to save money.
I surveyed members of the Facebook group for our DCL San Diego sailing to find out where most passengers stayed and what they thought of their hotel choice. Here are a few San Diego hotel highlights to consider:
1. Wyndham San Diego Bayside ($$)
The Wyndham Bayside was by far the most common hotel of choice mentioned. If you just need an adequate place to lay your head with a great location at a moderate price, it probably will fit the bill. But quite a few of my fellow passengers reported that the hotel was pretty dated and in need of an update. The consensus seemed to be that Tower 3 (which has the best view of the ship) was the most recently renovated, so ask for that! Parking packages for cruise passengers are available.
2. InterContinental San Diego ($$$)
With amenities like a club lounge and a rooftop pool and lounge view a bay view, the InterContinental San Diego is the most luxurious (and usually priciest) property within walking distance of the Disney ship.
3. SpringHill Suites San Diego Downtown/Bayfront ($$-$$$)
On the same block as the InterContinental is the family-friendly SpringHill Suites San Diego Downtown/Bayfront . Many of the hotel’s studio suites sleep 5 with two queen beds and a sofa bed.
4. Residence Inn San Diego Downtown/Bayfront ($$-$$$)
Also on the same walkable block is another Marriott property. The Residence Inn San Diego Downtown/Bayfront gives families a little more space as well as family-friendly amenities like full kitchens and included breakfast. Studio and one bedroom suites sleep 4 while two bedroom suites sleep up to 6.
5. Hampton Inn San Diego-Downtown ($$)
If you prefer Hilton hotels, the Hampton Inn San Diego-Downtown is a little more distant to the cruise terminal than the four above, but still decently walkable for many travelers without huge bags or mobility issues. Standard rooms sleep 4 and free breakfast is included.
6. Hotel del Coronado, Curio Collection by Hilton ($$$-$$$$)
The Hotel del Coronado (known affectionately as “The Del”) is the San Diego area’s most iconic historic hotel. It’s also where we stayed the day before our sailing. It had been on our bucket list for awhile! Located on Coronado Island, it’s about a 15-20 minute drive to the port. It has fine dining, a prime beachfront location, great pools, and lots of history to explore. If you want a true vacation and luxury level amenities before or after your sailing, this is the place to go.
San Diego Port Layout & Logistics – Embarkation Day
When it’s finally time to set sail aboard Disney Cruise Line from San Diego, the process really could not be easier. If you are used to a much more trafficked cruise terminal like Miami or Port Canaveral, you will likely be pleasantly surprised. The cruise ship is literally right there in the thick of things in the center of town, just right across the street from several hotels and attractions.
If you are arriving from the airport or a farther destination like we were, taxis and Ubers can drop you off steps from the building where you enter to have your cruise documentation checked to board.
We decided to select one of the later boarding groups to avoid the mad rush, and had no wait at all throughout any part of the process to walk aboard. It was so refreshing! We did happen to sail on a day when we were the only ship in port, so check the Port of San Diego’s cruise ship schedule to find out whether other ships are scheduled the day of your sailing, as that can affect lines and logistics.
Ports of Call on San Diego Disney Cruise Sailings
So once you are on board in San Diego, where can DCL take you? Depending on which itinerary you book, here are the ports of call you may experience on a San Diego cruise.
Ensenada, Mexico
Located pretty close to the border, Ensenada is a popular port for cruise ships from Southern California because it satisfies the legal requirements of stopping in at least one foreign port. It doesn’t have as much to do or see, but it’s easy to walk off and walk around town for food and sightseeing. We hired a driver to take us to the famous seaside blowhole, La Bufadora, about a 1 hour drive away.
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Cabo doesn’t have a cruise ship dock of any size, so the ship uses tenders that drop passengers at the far end of the marina. You can take a water taxi across the harbor to get to the Medano Beach area.
A popular and quick DIY excursion that we did is getting aboard a glass bottom boat to cruise out to see the famed Cabo arch, El Arco. There are lots of active excursions in Cabo as well, including ATV tours and snorkeling trips. Cabo Adventures is a trusted tour company that we’ve used before on other Cabo vacations.
Mazatlán, Mexico
Just across the Sea of Cortez on the mainland of Mexico is Mazatlán, a stop on longer DCL San Diego sailings. A popular excursion there that only takes a limited amount of time and that can be DIYed on the cheap is climbing El Faro – a lighthouse on a hill overlooking the water with spectacular views.
Note that Mazatlán will no longer be a port-of-call on spring 2025 Disney cruises.
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Puerto Vallarta is the farthest south that DCL San Diego sailings go. The city is a well-known and popular resort destination with lots of beach options, shopping, and water activities.
By far the most popular and competitive shore excursion to book on a Disney Cruise for families is the Las Caletas Hideaway. This all day excursion goes to a private beach accessible only by boat filled with activities like ziplining, snorkeling, and a kids adventure park. Think of it like a Castaway Cay alternative.
Catalina Island, California
One of the Channel Islands, Catalina Island is a unique port of call for Disney’s San Diego sailings. Disney only began making stops here as of spring 2022. The ship stops off shore and tenders guests into the main town of Avalon. Popular things to do include renting a golf cart and cruising around town, enjoying a hike with panoramic sea views, or water activities like paddleboarding, scuba, snorkeling, and kayaking.
On the Ship
Longer San Diego sailings tend to have several sea days because of the distance the ship must cover to get to the Mexico ports of call farther south. This is a huge highlight because there is so much to do aboard any Disney Cruise.
In fact, one of the reasons we settled on this cruise (instead of paying the bigger bucks to cruise Disney to Alaska this year) is that we would get to spend so much time doing the Disney activities and exploring the ship. The ports on our San Diego sailing were not a must-do for us. To be sure, there is plenty to see in all of them, but several of them are destinations we can visit easily and independently from our home base in Northern California at other times. We didn’t feel as much pressure to spend every moment in port. Instead, we opted to spend more time experiencing what Disney offered on board.
Dining & Activities
If you’ve cruised Disney before, the on-board experience on San Diego cruises will look very familiar to you. All of the usual on-boarding dining and activities are offered, from the rotational dining through the three restaurants (Tiana’s Place, Triton’s, and Animator’s Palate on the Disney Wonder and Lumiere’s, Rapunzel’s Royal Table, and Animator’s Palate on the Disney Magic).
We also especially enjoyed Family Karaoke, “Anyone Can Cook” cooking demonstrations, and trivia in the English pub. Plus, the usual Broadway style Disney shows are available along with many other fun activities, including a Pirate Night celebration.
Kids & Teen Clubs
Our youngest child was 9 years old at the time of the cruise so he spent a fair amount of time in the Oceaneer Club and Lab – DCL’s kids club. One thing we loved about Disney Cruise Line is that kids as young as 8 are permitted to check themselves in and out of the clubs (with parental permission), so he could come and go as he pleased. We would get an automated message on the DCL app when he checked out so we knew of his whereabouts.
Our older child turned 14 during the middle of the cruise and was able to go to the older teen club Vibe. There were a lot of teens on our sailing (which was during an Easter break for many schools). They formed fast friendships and really made the most of their time and independence.
If you plan to spend any time on board by the pool on San Diego sailings, keep in mind the weather patterns I already mentioned. The warmest days will be in Cabo and farther south – and shorter cruises won’t go that far. You may still want to get in a swim, but it probably won’t be for long. My husband and son hit the AquaLab after our time in Ensenada so it was doable but definitely chilly! They got in a few waterslide rides and jumps into the pool before it got to them.
All good things must of course come to and end, and Disney Cruise is no exception. When the time comes to debark your Disney Cruise in San Diego, the process is pretty easy but does require some thinking through your plans in advance. As on all Disney Cruises, guests can opt to set their bags out the night before and have Disney whisk them off the ship. But that means debarking at a time set by Disney. Alternately, you can opt to DIY it which gives you more flexibility on timing.
Our family opted for the self walk-off and carried our own bags. We were worried it would be hard to get an elevator but had no issues at all. We had our final breakfast in Tiana’s Place and then queued up to debark.
Because we had breakfast and didn’t debark with the earliest of the self walk-off crowd, we were in for some lines. By that time, immigration and customs had a decently long wait in San Diego. It took us more than 30 minutes to debark and complete the necessary passport checks. This was more time than we experienced this year in Seattle coming off of a Celebrity Cruise to Alaska but ultimately quite doable.
If you are planning to head straight to the airport, it’s easy to take a short Uber or taxi right there after clearing customs. Our flight out of SAN was at 11:20am and we made it in plenty of time, even with the lines and eating breakfast first. If we had chosen to skip breakfast, we could have made an even earlier flight with self walk-off. In short, San Diego is one port where you can book an early flight and likely will have no issues if you can manage your own bags.
Things to Do in San Diego Before & After Your Disney Cruise
If you have time before or after your Disney Cruise to explore the city of San Diego proper, the city really always delivers. There is simply so much fun to do. My family visits San Diego often since it’s such a cheap flight from home, and it’s one of our favorite family travel destinations that never gets old.
Here are a few of our favorite family-friendly things to do.
- USS Midway : Located just steps from the cruise ship port this famed aircraft carrier has lots of naval and aviation history on display. This is probably the easiest and most convenient attraction to squeeze in to your schedule if you only have a few extra hours to explore.
- San Diego Zoo : One of the country’s very best zoos, conveniently located in Balboa Park just a couple of miles away from the port. This is my top pick for families with younger kids.
- San Diego Zoo Safari Park : Located about 45 minutes north of the city, the safari-like experience gets you closer to animals in a more natural habitat. You’ll need several hours to visit properly, so don’t schedule it for boarding day.
- Balboa Park : San Diego’s Balboa park is home to many museums, gardens, and other sights. One of our favorites for kids is the Model Railroad Museum.
- Sea World San Diego : One of Southern California’s best theme parks, Sea World combines roller coasters, family-friendly and kiddie rides, and multiple sea animal experiences, shows, and exhibits.
- San Diego Padres Game : Cruise passengers on spring sailings may be able to catch a home game at Petco Park if the San Diego Padres are in town. The season starts in late March each year. And Park is one of the best MLB stadiums there are, so I highly recommend it if you have a baseball fan in the family!
- Coronado Island : Coronado Island is home to the Naval Air Station but is also known for its beach town vibe. If the weather is nice, plan for some beach time or take a bike ride.

And finally, don’t forget about Disneyland ! Located just about a 2 hour drive from San Diego, a lot of our sailing’s passengers headed there to extend their vacation after the cruise. If you are coming from outside California, it’s a great opportunity to get a double dose of Disney.

Disney Cruise Line, in a first for San Diego, is originating a dozen voyages from here over the next year and a half, a hopeful harbinger of better times to come for a local industry that has been in steep decline for the last several years.
While its not clear what Disneys plans are for the long term, San Diego port officials are buoyed by the cruise lines decision to bypass other California ports to launch a variety of short sailings as well as repositioning cruises heading to Vancouver and the Panama Canal.
The first of those trips was Saturday, when the 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder docked in San Diego for a quick two-day getaway at sea. A second Disney sailing departing today, this one a five-night trip to Vancouver, wrapped up the current season, which will resume in September. On Monday, Disney announced it was adding six more cruises to Baja California beginning in October 2015.
This is very significant, said Adam Deaton, the ports cruise marketing representative. Disney has a very high standard when it comes to its passengers. They want that complete vacation experience, and they feel San Diego has that capability with the airport being within a couple miles from the cruise terminal.
For the last few years, a coalition of local officials has been trying to woo Disney to come to San Diego, Deaton said.

2008: 921,360 passengers, 255 calls
2009: 842,353 passengers, 223 calls

Disney Cruise Tips: Basic Information
Disney Cruise Line currently operates five ships, with several more on the way: the Disney Magic , which launched in 1998 the Disney Wonder , which launched in 1999 the Disney Dream , which launched January 2011 the Disney Fantasy , which launched March 2012 and the Disney Wish , which launched July 2022. Two more ships, as yet unnamed, have been ordered from the shipyard and will debut in coming years.
The Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder are very similar to each other, except for the interior design and a few differently-themed bars. Both are 83,000-ton vessels with 875 staterooms .
The Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy are also very similar to each other, except for the interior design , plus some additional water features, differently-themed bars and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique on the Fantasy. Both are 122,000 tons and two decks taller than the older ships, with 1,250 staterooms .
The Disney Wish is somewhat similar in size to the Disney Dream and Fantasy, but has a storybook castle interior design and a somewhat different layout of lounges, pools and kids clubs. It has three all-new restaurants for main dining: an Arendelle-themed one with a live musical show starring Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff from Frozen an Art Deco Hollywood themed restaurant called 1923 and a Marvel-themed restaurant. It is 144,000 tons, with 1,254 staterooms .

Disney Cruises Things To Do
- A Disney Cruise Line cruise is designed primarily for families and makes planning a family vacation super easy. Therefore, Disney Cruise Line vacations are directed to multigenerational families, particularly families with young children. However, that does not mean the cruise line forgets the adults, as it features adult-only specialty restaurants, nightclubs, and quiet pools on all its four ships. While the large staterooms attract families, they also invite interest from a small number of honeymooners, couples, and singles. Anyone who wants a more peaceful cruise vacation should choose sailing outside the summer months, as cruise-goers begin to subside and the pace is therefore slower. The people on a Disney cruise enjoy its youthful vibe, as is evidenced by the cruise line’s sail-away dance parties each of which connect some of Disney’s most lovable characters with Disney cruise guests. Pools are also designed for kid-friendly activities and adults who want to relive their childhood once again. If you love activities, such as miniature golf, ping-pong, or similar kid-friendly pastimes, you will feel right at home on a Disney cruise ship. In fact, anyone who loves Disney will also love a Disney cruise ship vacation.
Which Disney Ships Depart From Los Angeles
The Disney Wonder , which used to offer cruises from the Port of Los Angeles, has moved its Southern California port of call to San Diego , so there are not currently any Disney Cruise offerings out of Los Angeles or Long Beach, but that can always change, so keep an eye on their cruise schedule. The art nouveau décor of the Disney Wonder incorporates iconic Disney characters along with nautical wave themes. A bronze statue of Ariel, from The Little Mermaid greets guests in the lobby of the ship.

Los Angeles Cruise Guide
Due to its location along the Pacific Coast, many cruise itineraries to Mexico, the Panama Canal, South America, the Transpacific and Hawaii depart from the city of Los Angeles. This is the best port to find affordable getaways to the Mexican Riviera.
The port itself is actually located in Long Beach, which is a short drive away from the big-city L.A., but also has its fair share of attractions. You can stay overnight at the Queen Mary, a retired vintage luxury ocean liner that is rumored to be haunted and offers ghost tours. Take a dip in the calm waters at the beach, or take a whale watching tour along the Pacific Ocean. Once youve seen it all at the port, a short ride by car, Uber or the L.A. Metro brings you to the star-studded city of Los Angeles, where you can easily spend a week exploring all that it has to offer.
There are many ways to snap a picture of the infamous Hollywood sign, depending on the angle youd like. If you have a car you can make a pit stop along Deronda Drive, and take a quick walk over to the sign. If youre looking for more of a challenge, take the 6-mile hike along the Brush Canyon Trail, where youll eventually get that picture-perfect shot. You can also see the sign from outside of the Griffith Observatory, where for a small fee you can go up to the top of the observatory and take in the best panoramic views of the city of Los Angeles.

Disney Cruise Line has officially resumed sailing from San Diego. Today, Disney Wonder sets sail in southern California for its first cruise in over 18 months.
Sailing at reduced capacity, the Halloween on the High Seas voyage will call on Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The vessels three-night sailings will run just opposite, calling to Ensenada instead. On November 5, the 84,000-gross registered ton Wonder will reposition to Galveston, Texas on a 14-night sailing. The line is requiring that every guest, regardless of their age, be vaccinated on the two-week Panama Canal transit. This means that kids who are not eligible for the vaccine will not be allowed to sail.
Disney Wonder wont be the only ship sailing from San Diego in the coming months. As the cruise industry returns to service, the Port of San Diego is expected to have over 100 cruise calls from various lines, including Holland America, Princess, and Celebrity.
Like other cruise lines, Disney has used a phased-in approach to the resumption of cruising. During the shutdown, all four ships were docked in Brest, France for health enhancements and crew repatriation.

Disney Cruise Line’s Summer 2024 Sailings – A Look at Opening Day Prices
The Summer 2024 Disney Cruise Line sailings were announced this week , and it is time to take a closer look at the opening day pricing. Please keep in mind, the pricing information is available for anyone to view, but there is the standard tiered booking for Castaway Club members starting March 27th more popular sailings will have fares increased by the time general booking opens. You must be logged into Disney Cruise Line’s website and make sure your account is properly associated with your Castaway Club ID so that you will be able to take advantage of your Castaway Club level booking day.
Below, I’ve collected the opening day pricing, lowest price per stateroom category, based on double occupancy (2 adults) for all of the new Disney Cruise sailings to provide a general idea on where the cruises are priced. I realize this does not take into account onboard booking, or a more detailed quote for your sailing party.
The idea for this post was simply to get baseline pricing for each cruise and I felt 2 adults provided the baseline for double occupancy to help everyone plan for Gold, Silver, and first-time cruisers booking windows. The pricing is grouped by ship and itinerary for more of an apples to apple comparison.
One last note, the pricing below is representative of a snapshot in time on opening day. As cruises book, prices will increase and stateroom availability will dwindle. The pricing below includes taxes, fees & port expenses for 2 adults.
Please note, port order for each sailing is still pending confirmation.

One Reply to “Disney Cruise Line’s Summer 2024 Sailings – A Look at Opening Day Prices”
I think DCL has lost their minds. Their prices are insane. They keep taking things away, downgrading service, food etc, but raise prices. I’m sure they will get takers. I’m platinum and I will not pay these prices.

EXCLUSIVE : After wowing with her muscular turn in A24’s Love Lies Bleeding , Katy O’Brian has joined the cast of the eighth Mission: Impossible for Paramount Pictures and Skydance, sources tell Deadline.
Details as to the plot of the latest spy actioner in the series remain under wraps, as does her role. But it follows up Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning , which grossed over $567MM worldwide last summer and landed a pair of Oscar nominations for Best Sound and Visual Effects.

Tom Cruise Wants To Continue Making ‘Mission: Impossible’ Movies Into His 80s Like Harrison Ford With ‘Indiana Jones’
Christopher McQuarrie has returned to direct from his own script and is producing alongside Cruise, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger and Chris Brock serving as exec producers. While M:I8 had at one point been looked at as a franchise ender, McQuarrie has suggested in interviews over the last year that this will not be the end of the road for Hunt and team. Previously set to debut on June 28th of this year, the title will now bow on May 23, 2025 given delays amid the actor’s strike.
O’Brian stars opposite Kristen Stewart in Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding , a romantic thriller that garnered rave reviews in its world premiere at Sundance before going on to a wide release earlier this month. Showcasing the athletic chops she’ll perhaps be bringing to Mission: Impossible , the film follows her aspiring bodybuilder Jackie as she moves to rural Nevada and falls in love with an employee at her new local gym, there being introduced to the chaotic and damaging world of steroids.
O’Brian is repped by Gersh, Luber Roklin Entertainment, RCM Talent & Management, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.

- Tom Cruise Is ‘So Busy’ That ‘You Never Know’ When ‘Top Gun 3’ Will Get Made, Says Franchise Producer: He ‘Really’ Likes the ‘Wonderful Story Idea’ 21 hours ago
Tom Cruise is a busy man, which makes it all but impossible to put a timeline on when “ Top Gun ” fans might finally get to see a third installment in the beloved action-drama franchise. Variety confirmed in January that Paramount was developing “Top Gun 3” and had tapped its “Top Gun: Maverick” co-writer Ehren Kruger to work on the screenplay. Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer now tells ScreenRant he has no idea when Cruise might even have free time in his schedule to shoot the third “Top Gun” film.
Cruise is currently filming “Mission: Impossible 8,” which will serve as the sequel to last year’s “Dead Reckoning.” Paramount is also behind that action franchise. The studio is hoping that “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski will return to helm the next “Top Gun” movie. Bruckheimer now confirmed Kosinski came up with the story idea for the next sequel. “Top Gun” newcomers Glen Powell, Miles Teller and more are likely to return.
“People looked at me like I knew what was going on,” Powell told Variety at Sundance earlier this year about the next “Top Gun ” movie. “There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to [Joseph] Kosinski, Cruise and Jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be going back…I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”
“Top Gun: Maverick” was a huge hit for Paramount, which tried for decades to find a way to get Cruise back in aviators. The film was nominated for the Oscar for best picture and grossed nearly $1.5 billion, making it the most popular film of Cruise’s career.
