Daytona Beach

The founders of Daytona Beach didn't just pick a random spot to create a resort town. They chose a stretch of sand extending some 23 miles, which was to become widely recognized as one of the best beaches in Florida , if not one of the best in the entire United States.

Edged by its distinctive aquamarine waters, this famous beach now borders one of the world's most legendary Boardwalks, itself home to a ton of amusements, funky shops and restaurants, and outdoor street performers.

This is a true family beach, where the sounds of the waves are intermingled with the laughter of children. The beach is also home to 10 parks, a number of interesting festivals, and recreational opportunities galore. And from mid-May to the end of October a parade of giant sea turtles emerges from the ocean to lay their eggs on the sand.

Daytona International Speedway

Highlights : Home of NASCAR, with thrilling races and driving experiences

The moment you enter Daytona International Speedway you'll know you're on hallowed ground. This is not only one of the most legendary auto-racing tracks on Earth, it's also the home of NASCAR, the National Association for Stock Car Racing. Founded by Bill France, Sr., in 1947 and still family-owned, this organization holds colorful events that attract upwards of 125,000 spectators.

And now you can even get a taste the thrill of race car driving in a bunch of interactive racetrack experiences and tours. On the Speedway Tour tram ride, you'll experience the 31-degree banks on the track, and even climb up to the podium in Victory Lane for a photo.

There's also the unique opportunity to ride shotgun with a professional driver at speeds up to 160 miles per hour and at the NASCAR Racing Experience or the Richard Petty Driving Experience, you can actually drive one of these cars yourselves for up to 30 laps.

It's a great spot for a sunrise selfie, or to spot marine life, such as dolphins, and seabirds. There's also a couple of restaurants here for those wanting to grab a bite with a great view over the water, one of which will also cook up any fish you may have caught.

Among the rescued critters are sea turtles, hatchlings, and other animals such as snakes, gopher tortoises, and freshwater turtles. And, since opening in 2004, the Mary Keller Seabird Rehabilitation Facility has taken in almost 18,000 injured birds.

Children and parents can actually view the research facilities and touch some of the inhabitants in the large touch-tank, including stingrays. Other highlights include a Turtle Terrace, a nature trail with boardwalks, a bird observation tower, and all kinds of interesting exhibits.

Aerial view of the Jackie Robinson Ballpark

Highlights : Historic baseball grounds and live music venue

If you're a baseball fan, you'll be familiar with the name Jackie Robinson. In 1946, Robinson became the first African-American to play in a professional baseball game in the US, right here in the stadium that carries his name.

He was a minor-leaguer then, playing for the Montreal Royals. But it wasn't long before he was called up to the majors to play and eventually make the Hall of Fame with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

That old ballpark, now known as Jackie Robinson Ballpark , is located in the historic downtown waterfront district and is a Daytona Beach landmark. History reverberates loudly here, as does the ballpark on nights when today's minor-league team, the Daytona Tortugas, play here. The ballpark also doubles as a concert venue.

Address: 105 E. Orange Ave, Daytona Beach, Florida

Highlights : Large collection of Florida artwork and historical displays, plus planetarium

It tells this history more comprehensively than any other art museum and features more than 2,600 works of art, making it the world's largest collection of Florida art and artists.

Address: 352 S Nova Road, Daytona Beach, Florida

Highlights : Stunning historic mansion offering guided tours and seasonal events

The Stetson Mansion in Deland is a still-standing sentinel of the Gilded Age. It was considered Florida's first luxury estate and its most glorious home up until the 20th century.

Built by hat tycoon and philanthropist John B. Stetson in 1886, the house was constructed with a variety of interesting interior carvings, rare woods for the floors, 10,000 window panes of leaded glass, and world-class art.

The Stetsons were known for hosting the most lavish parties in Florida, attended by foreign royalty and American entrepreneurs, tycoons, and inventors. Family friend Thomas Edison helped design the electrical system, and the Stetsons even built their own power plant, ice plant, and a hotel for their wealthy guests.

The famous Florida magnate Henry Flagler even built a railroad line directly to the property. For a special treat, be sure to visit over the Christmas period, when the home is spectacularly decorated with festive ornamentation. Guided tours are available year-round.

Address: 154 South Beach Street, Daytona Beach, Florida

Ponce Inlet Lighthouse & Museum

Highlights : Florida's oldest lighthouse with stunning views from the top

While some may claim that Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon actually slept on the spot where the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse stands today, it's a topic for debate. But there's no debating the fact that he never found his Fountain of Youth, or else he'd be here to tell us about it.

At the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, named for the man who first sailed into this inlet with a fleet of Spanish ships, you'll have the opportunity to explore Florida's oldest lighthouse, built in 1887 as one of a chain of 10 lighthouses erected in the late-1800s along the east coast of a state known for its shipwrecks.

In addition to seeing the light in the lantern at the top of the tower, which still works as it did over a hundred years ago, you can also inspect the three original keeper's dwellings, which are filled with maps and artifacts from the old days.

In 1998, the lighthouse was declared a National Historic Landmark, and you should definitely try to walk the 213 steps to the top. It's well worth the effort, with spectacular, 360-degree views of the ocean, the inlet, and the Intracoastal Waterway.

Address: 4931 S Peninsula Drive, Ponce Inlet, Florida

Museum of Arts & Sciences

Other highlights include the Schulte Gallery of Chinese Art; the Gallery of Decorative Arts; the Cuban Foundation Museum; and the Root Family Museum, displaying rare items of Americana.

In the realm of the sciences, there's a Children's Museum filled with interactive experiences for the younger set, and a new state-of-the-art planetarium, which will take you up to the heavens. There's also a nature trail and displays of fossils and bones from the people who originally walked the area a thousand years ago.

The museum also stages interesting events such as Yoga In the Gallery. A good café and a store are also located on-site.

Address: 352 S. Nova Road, Daytona Beach, Florida

Tomoka State Park

Highlights : Beautiful 2000-acre nature reserve with wildlife, canoeing, kayaking, and camping

Just an easy 20 minutes drive north along the coast from Daytona and you'll find yourself at one of Florida's most picturesque nature reserves, Tomoka State Park . Covering an unspoiled 2,000 acres, the park occupies an area adjacent to the Tomoka River that was well known among the local native population for the abundance of fish and other food sources in its lagoons.

Established as a park in 1945, it has since become a popular tourist attraction thanks to the many fun things to do here. Topping the list are outdoor adventures, including canoeing and kayaking, along with fishing.

Bird-watchers are also drawn here, as the park is known to be home or a resting spot to some 160 different species, including a variety of birds of prey such as bald eagles. Other notable wildlife include manatees, deer, alligators, and even bobcats.

A highlight of a visit for day trippers is strolling the park's network of nature trails, while those seeking to extend their stay can purchase a camping permit for the campground. Supplies and canoe rentals are available here, too.

Address: 2099 N Beach Street, Ormond Beach, Florida

Aerial view of Daytona Beach

Highlight : Exciting helicopter tours over Daytona Beach

A number of reputable aerial tours are available that take you on a great adventure over east-central Florida. One of the best experiences is provided by Leading Edge Helicopter Tours .

These exciting tours will have you flying north along the coast toward Flagler Beach and back, and on the way, you'll pass over small towns, highways, and that magnificent stretch of sand that makes Daytona so famous. The view over the incredibly-hued ocean waters are spectacular, too.

Be sure to add this thrilling experience, rated one of the top things to do in Daytona for families, to your Florida travel itinerary. Leading Edge also offer similar experiences in nearby Orlando .

Highlight : Tour Daytona's oldest beach home and haunted house

Built in 1884 by Laurence Thompson, one of the area's first settlers, the charming Lilian Place Historic House is the oldest house on the beachside of Daytona Beach.

Erected at a time when only those with a pioneering spirit lived here, the home is a distinctive example not of frontier architecture, but of High Victorian architecture, boasting high ceilings and solid pine floors. Because this area is so tied to the sea, there's a widow's walk, where the wives of sea captains waited for their men to return (or not).

Stephen Crane, author of The Red Badge of Courage , ended up getting here the hard way by swimming after his boat sank offshore in 1896. Some local folks swear he's still here, roaming the rooms and the corridors, along with other "eternal" guests such as Lucille, the mystery ghost of Lilian Place.

Other ghosts reported to still haunt the old home include laughing children and a woman dressed all in white. A gift shop is located on the premises, as well as a tearoom. Guided tours are available.

Address: 1000 S Peninsula Drive, Daytona Beach, Florida

Highlights : Family-friendly beach buffet with traditional Polynesian music and fire knife performance

Nothing quite beats an authentic waterside dining experience, especially if it's on Daytona Beach itself. One of the best alfresco beach food experiences, the Polynesian Fire and Dinner Show is a fun-filled evening that's suitable for the whole family.

Things kick off with a fun meet-and-greet by the event performers as you check in, followed by your unlimited buffet dinner. Dinner's followed by thrilling performances by musicians and dancers, as well the star act, a thrilling fire knife display.

When looking for good accommodations in Daytona, be sure to check out the best hotels and resorts located on the oceanfront, or as near as you can get to it. daytona beach tourist attractions

Daytona Beach Daytona Beach free

Stretching for more than 23 miles, the "World's Most Famous Beach" is a must-see if you're in Daytona. Situated near the middle of the peninsula, the beach is famous for its large crowds, bustling pier and hard-packed sand. In fact, it's thanks to the sand's firm composition that drivers are allowed to park their cars right on the beach. Though some see this privilege as a major convenience, parents lament the fact the cars create another safety hazard for young children. However, there is a mile-long pedestrian-only zone that surrounds the pier. Beyond the pier you'll also find a variety of shops, bars and restaurants.

The beach is open 24 hours a day to pedestrians, but driving hours are limited to sunrise to sunset (permitting tidal conditions) between Nov. 1 and April 30, and between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. May 1 through Oct. 31. Access to the beach is free, but you will have to shell out $20 per day to drive on the beach from Feb. 1 through Nov. 30. The speed limit on the beach is 10 mph. Pedestrians and drivers should also be mindful of nesting sea turtles from May to October, who typically nest in marked dune areas.

Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse & Museum Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse & Museum

A National Historic Landmark since 1998, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse & Museum is Florida's tallest lighthouse It's also a traveler favorite, thanks to the well-preserved structures and rich history. If you're looking for a bird's-eye view of the area, prepare to hoof it 203 steps to the top of the 175-foot-tall edifice. Travelers recommend wearing walking shoes for the long climb, but say the spectacular views are a must-see and well worth the effort. Once you've reached the top, you'll see Daytona Beach and the north bank of the Ponce Inlet, where the Halifax and Indian rivers meet.

After surveying the Florida coast below, stop by the Ayres Davies Lens Exhibit Building, where you can stroll through exhibits that detail the history of lighthouse evolution. Recent travelers also recommended touring the restored keepers' dwellings. Originally constructed in 1887, these residences now offer a glimpse into the history of the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station, the United States Lighthouse Service and the town itself. Should you get hungry (and who wouldn't work up an appetite after a climb like that?), the inlet offers plenty of spots to grab some grub.

Daytona International Speedway Daytona International Speedway

More than the miles of shoreline, Daytona is probably best known for the Daytona International Speedway. Since opening in 1959, the complex has been the city's claim to fame, as host to the biggest racing competitions (like February's Daytona 500) and other smaller events throughout the year. On non-event days, you can take a guided tour via tram.

During the half-hour Speedway Tour, you'll take a spin through Daytona International Speedway's infield, pose for a photo at the podium in Gatorade Victory Lane, and stand next to the car of this year's Daytona 500 champion. Tickets for adults cost $19; tickets for kids ages 5 to 12 cost $13 and children ages 4 and younger ride for free. If you're hoping to delve deeper into the speedway's historical sites, consider taking an All Access Tour. You'll have to fork over a bit more coin ($26 for adults; $20 for kids ages 5 to 12), but you'll have the opportunity to check out the media deadline room, peer into the pit stalls and enjoy spectacular views of the trioval and infield from frontstretch seating. Even if you're not much of a racing aficionado, previous travelers said it's still worth a visit. Hoping to get behind the wheel? You can do that here, too. Sign up for the Richard Petty Driving Experience and tear around the 2½-mile-long superspeedway. If you'd rather ride shotgun, you can ask an instructor to take you for a few laps around the track – just be prepared to ride at speeds up to 165 mph. To learn more about available dates and times, check the Richard Petty Driving Experience website , and for more information on the Daytona International Speedway, visit its website .

Nestled within the Tuscawilla Preserve, a 90-acre hydric hammock, the museum's lush environment is a quiet respite from the hubbub around the speedway. Jackie Robinson Ballpark & Museum Jackie Robinson Ballpark & Museum free

Set on an island in the Halifax River and possessing the charm of days gone by, Jackie Robinson Ballpark is to be visited as much for its rich history as for the enduring appeal of watching America’s favorite pastime. Originally named City Island Ballpark, it is the site where Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1946 by playing in the first integrated, professional baseball game. Now, it's professional baseball's fourth-oldest ballpark in the nation and home to the Daytona Tortugas minor league team. The ballpark also hosts a museum that offers a tribute to Robinson's athletic prowess and lasting legacy, and spotlights other people of color who broke barriers of their own. If you're catching a ballgame, grab a seat where you can take in the action and behold the beautiful river views. Recent visitors appreciated the reasonable prices all around, including food and drink specials on certain nights. Parents praised the fun, kid-friendly entertainment between innings. What's more, those concerned about safety will appreciate netting around the seating area. For those who stay the full nine innings on Saturdays, the fireworks display is said to be impressive.  Games are held between April and early September. For adults, general admission is $9 and reserved seating is $11, while children, seniors and military enjoy a $2 discount. VIP admission costs $15. If you're not in town for a game, consider visiting the museum, which is free and open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit the ballpark's website .

Racing fans rejoice: At the Halifax Historical Museum, old racing photographs and artifacts sidle antique model cars. But this neoclassical-style building is also a monument to Daytona's history in general: The museum is housed in the former Merchants Bank Building – a fixture in downtown Daytona Beach since 1910. A bank teller's window is still visible in a remote corner, and you'll also find topical displays on the Civil War and American Indians.

Recent visitors said this small museum is jam-packed with history. Others said a stop here provided a nice way to learn about the history of the area.

A centerpiece of the park is also the Tomoka River, where you can reel in your next big catch or rent a canoe to explore the peaceful waterways. If you're considering staying the night, recent campers noted that the campsites are fairly close together, but appreciated the shady environment, well-kept grounds and the convenience of the Tomoka Outpost .

Campers will pay $24 a night, plus taxes and a reservation fee. The park is open from 8 a.m. to sundown every day of the year. Best things to do in Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach

1.  Daytona Beach

While visiting Daytona Beach, it’s an absolute must to see the  actual  beach. There are 23 miles of white, sandy shores to enjoy, open 24 hours a day and accessible to pedestrians. For those wanting to drive, you can even park on the beach in certain areas from sunrise to sunset each day—but it’s dependent on the tidal conditions. Along the beach, you can look for shells, enjoy the surf and bask in the warm Florida sun. From May through October, you might even be lucky enough to see a sea turtle nest hatch and watch baby turtles make their way to the ocean. However,  always  be sure to keep your distance, especially if you’re unsupervised; accidental damage and interference from tourists and visitors constantly threaten the wildlife here.

Museum of Arts & Sciences

2.  Museum of Arts & Sciences

The Museum of Arts and Sciences is home to the Lowell and Nancy Lohman Family Planetarium, where adults and kids enjoy the many seminars and spectacular shows, including weekly laser shows. While most of the museum focuses on art, the exhibitions rotate out frequently, so you never know what you’ll see. One thing not to miss is the weekly yoga classes in the art gallery every Wednesday night; those stretches are a little easier to complete when surrounded by magnificent art.

3.  Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art

Take a stroll around the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art to see one of the world's largest collections of Florida art. The many displays and exhibitions show the history of the state through artwork. There are eight different galleries to explore, including the grand central gallery and six smaller galleries. Besides Florida history, the museum also has a few pop culture pieces that highlight a sense of Americana. Don't leave without popping into the gift shop to pick something up to remember your trip to the museum.

Daytona Beach Bandshell

4.  Daytona Beach Bandshell

The Daytona Beach Bandshell is an outdoor amphitheater where various acts occur throughout the year. During the summer, the arena hosts family-friendly shows every Saturday night, shows climaxing with a stunning firework show. The Bandshell is located at the north end of the Daytona Beach Boardwalk, so plan your visit to coincide with the time you want to enjoy the boardwalk to get both done at once.

Jackie Robinson Ball Park

5.  Jackie Robinson Ball Park

Widely considered one of the best baseball parks in Minor League Baseball, Jackie Robinson Ball Park is as much a fascinating historic site as it is a sports arena. The ballpark opened on June 4, 1914, and is the fourth oldest park still used for professional baseball. This is where baseball legend Jackie Robinson played his first professional baseball game and broke the color barrier in the sport. Outside the gate is a Robinson statue that baseball fans love taking pictures with to remember the icon and their time at the ballpark.

6.  Marine Science Center

Adults who love animals (or those traveling with kids) will want to add the excellent Marine Science Center to their list of things to do in Daytona. Here, you can see a large variety of wildlife that calls Daytona Beach and Volusia County home. You can tour the bird and sea turtle rehabilitation centers, get up close and touch stingrays, and marvel at all the fish that inhabit an artificial reef at the center. Touring the Marine Science Center is best done first thing in the morning before it gets too busy, so you can focus and not get frustrated by crowds.

Daytona Beach Boardwalk

7.  Daytona Beach Boardwalk

One of the major attractions in Daytona Beach is the Boardwalk, Florida’s version of the iconic Northeastern boardwalks in New York and New Jersey. There’s a variety of shops offering everything from souvenirs to sunblock, together with restaurants, diners, and outdoor eateries selling hot dogs and other boardwalk favorites. There’s even a cool arcade where you can take on your friends in a round of skee ball or reminisce at the helm of a retro 80’s videogame.

Daytona International Speedway

8.  Daytona International Speedway

NASCAR enthusiasts, petrolheads, and motorsports fans will want to drive away from the beach to check out the Daytona International Speedway, the home of some of the most famous races in history, including the Daytona 500. The speedway offers daily, hour-long tours of the facility and track that start at 9:30 am. until 3pm. You can also have the experience of a lifetime with the NASCAR Racing Experience, where you can drive a real race car on the track where race legends are born.

9.  Lilian Place Heritage Center

Lilian Place is the oldest Victorian-era home in Daytona Beach and was built in 1884 by one of the city's first settlers. The house is a museum and historical site where guests can take daily tours to learn about the history and legend of the people who once lived there. The house is even said to be haunted, so watch out for any paranormal activity. The museum is open from 1pm until 4pm for guided tours (closed on Tuesdays), while the grounds are open from 9am until 5pm for you to wander about and explore at your own pace.

Daytona Lagoon

10.  Daytona Lagoon

Daytona Lagoon is part water park and part arcade. The seasonally open site features eight attractions, from water slides to a lovely lazy river at the water park. Inside, guests can participate in group laser tag or play arcade games, and there’s an outdoor go-kart track for adults and a smaller bumper car area for kids. It’s always worth double-checking the opening times before you go, as these can vary.

Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory

11.  Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory

Suppose you've ever wondered what it's like to make chocolate. In that case, a visit to Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory is in order. The adorable shop offers a variety of sweet treats and free factory tours where you can learn the art of making some delightful sweets. You can peer into large picture windows to see the chocolate experts at work, ask questions, and even get a few free samples before picking out a box of chocolates to take home with you.

Lighthouse Point Park

12.  Lighthouse Point Park

Just south of Daytona Beach, along a slight stretch of road, is Lighthouse Point Park. The public park is an excellent spot for nature lovers because of its abundant wildlife-spotting opportunities. Along the park's shore is a small beach where you can see dolphins or swim with fish. In the wooded area away from the ocean, visitors can find animals like armadillos, birds of prey, and gopher tortoises. Of course, the lighthouse itself is also a big draw for guests.

13.  Halifax Historical Museum

Those interested in Daytona Beach's history will want to visit the Halifax Historical Museum. The iconic building dates back to 1910, when it was the Merchants Bank Building, and the museum houses an abundance of artifacts from the local area, some of which date back to 5,000 B.C.E. Touring the museum takes about an hour and a half, so it's a great afternoon activity for after lunch when the sun is high in the sky, or if you need a break from the beach.

Dine and Cruise

14.  Dine and Cruise

Take in the sunset, watch dolphins swim alongside the boat, and enjoy the serene waters of the Halifax River on a Dine and Cruise dinner cruise. The experience takes place on the Lady Dolphin of Daytona. Tickets are affordable, starting at $25.95, and include an hour-and-a-half boat ride, dinner and dessert, sightseeing, music, free parking, and raffle prizes. With your food, there are unlimited complimentary soft drinks, while beer and wine start at $3.

15.  Daytona Beach Zipline Adventure

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Daytona Zipline Adventure (@daytonazipline)

Fly high above the treetops with Daytona Beach Zipline Adventure. A thrilling day at the adventure park can include over 40 aerial games and ten different zip lines, some over 200 feet long. Those looking for the most thrills can participate in course one and course two at the park, which takes about two and a half hours but offers the most in terms of zip lines, obstacles, and thrills. If you're looking for a deal, the park does offer discounts to select groups, including military members and first responders.

Covering more than 31000 acres and home to a section of the Tomoka River, you’ll find dense vegetation brimming with birdlife alongside expansive salt marshes that are perfect for paddling through in your kayak or canoe.

Hiking trails suitable for all ages run throughout the Forest — don’t miss the easy, 2-mile Buncombe Hill Interpretive Trail or the slightly longer Pershing Highway Interpretive Trail — as well as camping sites, biking routes, and fishing spots sure to appeal to the nature-lover in your family.

46 – Catch a show at the Daytona Playhouse

Daytona Playhouse, Daytona Beach

A local institution that’s been delighting theater-goers since 1946, the Daytona Playhouse is a cultural mainstay in the area.

Offering both classic and contemporary productions throughout the year as well as children’s theater and summer camps for aspiring young actors and actresses.

This affordable, nonprofit organization provides high-quality entertainment in spades, so check the website to see what’s on the calendar during your stay.

You’re sure to find something that piques your interest, whether it’s a murder mystery, a night of comedy, or the latest family-friendly musical.

47 – See what’s on at the Rockefeller Gardens

daytona beach tourist attractions

A focal point for all kinds of regular entertainment, Daytona Beach’s Rockefeller Gardens is a great place to take in some performance art, catch up on the latest blockbusters with a movie under the moonlight, or simply relax with friends over drinks.

The brainchild of real-estate mogul John D. Rockerfeller Jr., near his old winter getaway home and just two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, the gardens serve up walking paths and picnic tables, fishing spots, and jogging routes.

It also hosts events like the Art in the Park – held annually at the end of April or start of May with artisan vendors and food trucks galore – and Movies on the Halifax, where classics and new favorites are accessible free of charge.

48 – Order some lip-smacking goodness at Donnie’s Donuts

daytona beach tourist attractions

Feeling a little peckish after so much sightseeing? Daytona Beach is well known for its eclectic range of eateries, from seafood restaurants to Cuban cafés – and, of course, donut shops.

And the king of Daytona’s doughnut scene is unquestionably Donnie’s Donuts , a family-owned business with locations at Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach that’s been serving up fresh, handcrafted, mouth-watering pastries for years.

Choose from classic glazed, cream-filled, or chocolate-coated donuts (or go for something a little more adventurous like a fruity pebble variety), and prepare to indulge in some serious carb overload.

49 – Go surfing!

daytona beach tourist attractions

With endless stretches of golden (and white sand) coastline and a climate that keeps the waters warm enough to swim in all year round, it should come as no surprise to discover that Daytona Beach is also one of the best places in Florida to learn how to surf.

From classes at beginner-friendly beaches like New Smyrna right through to experienced-only spots like Ponce Inlet where you can rent your own board, there’s a wave for everyone here.

Plus, with the Daytona Beach Boardwalk and Pier just a few minutes’ walk away from most of the main surfing areas, it’s easy to find somewhere to take a break (or grab some lunch) after a long day out on the water.

Both the burgers and seafood meals come highly recommended but it’s the Italian-style coffee that keeps locals coming back again and again.

And after dark, when the nightly live music and dancing take center stage, that’s when Ocean Deck truly comes alive.

Florida tops list of most searched spring break destinations by state: Was your city included?

daytona beach tourist attractions

Spring break has sprung and Florida prepares itself for an influx of tourists who hope to take advantage of the sunshine and beaches as an escape from the cold that feels ubiquitous in the nation’s northern climes.

Data shows multiple Florida cities top Google searches for spring break destinations among other states, putting Florida far and above the most sought-after location to spend the vernal interval.

Only Texas and California boast as many search queries from hopefully spring breakers looking for beaches and sunshine, according to the data compiled by car seat manufacturer Diono.

Miami spring break

Despite severe discouragement from the city of Miami Beach hoping to ward off the chaos of spring breakers tearing through town, Miami's popularity nationwide as a potential destination has not diminished.

Miami dominated search data for states in the northeast. New Yorkers along with many in surrounding states searched for Miami more than any other spring break destination. People in Delaware, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont have all been eying Miami for the season.

Spring breakers in Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina and, of course, Florida also dominated search results for Miami.

Destin spring break

Destin dominated in the south. Georgians, Louisianans and Virginians all were most interested in Destin as a destination.

Known for its pristine white beaches, Destin's fine powdery sand is actually made from the pulverized rock from the former extended range of the Applachian mountains 12,000 years ago when the last ice age ended. When the pulverized rock was carried by waterways into the Gulf of Mexico, currents deposited it onto the beaches of Destin, where it's a tourist attraction millennia later.

Panama City spring break

Alabama, Mississippi and West Virginia all ensured that Panama City would place third among the most searched for Florida spring break cities.

Easily accessible to the south as part of the Florida panhandle, Panama City, and more likely Panama City Beach is a popular spring break destination .

Daytona Beach spring break

Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island were the three states most interested in a Daytona Beach spring break.

Known for its kitschy tourist attractions, biker culture and party town atmosphere, Daytona Beach and spring break are nearly synonymous in the popular imagination.

Clearwater spring break

Two major midwestern hubs, Illinois and Michigan, were the most interested in vacationing in Clearwater, Florida for spring break. Clearwater, like Destin, is known for its immaculate white sand.

Florida's calmer gulf coast waters offer a more place spring break experience in area around Tampa Bay compared to the hectic nightlife and party atmosphere of Miami. Still, record crowds are expected on the state's west coast as well.

Fort Lauderdale spring break

People in the neighboring states of Tennessee and North Carolina searched most for spring break in Fort Lauderdale.

Huge crowds have already been reported in Fort Lauderdale . Packed beaches and bars are the norm in South Florida as the weather heats up.

Indianans were most interested in getting as far south as possible. Siesta Beach on Siesta Key recently made TripAdvisor's list of top 10 beaches in the United States.

Another Gulf Coast destination made the list of most searched-for spring break locales. Along with Destin and Clearwater, Siesta Key boasts the white sand that makes it a sought-after beach along with other west coast destinations.

St. Petersburg

Low temperatures in Iowa will be in the 30s for much of the next week, motivating residents to look for respite on the warmer shores of Florida's Gulf Coast. St. Petersburg was the most searched spring break locale for Iowans. St. Petersburg is renowned for its historic arts district and aesthetically pleasing downtown while also being within driving distance to many of the other beach towns on this list along with Orlando.

Orlando spring break featuring Disney, other attractions

With its theme parks and tourist-friendly amenities, Orlando was surprisingly the top spring break choice for one state: Maine.

Deals at Disney: Disney World announces discounted tickets for Florida residents. 5 things you should know

Disney, Universal, Sea World along with Orlando's proximity to places like Cocoa Beach and the Kennedy Space Center also make it an attractive area for spring breakers.

After two record-setting years, Volusia tourism weathers downturn in 2023

daytona beach tourist attractions

DAYTONA BEACH — After two record-setting years capped by two devastating storms , Volusia County's tourism industry took a downturn in 2023, but hoteliers and industry leaders are looking ahead to the coming year with resiliency and high expectations.

A little over a year after back-to-back tropical storms ravaged the Volusia County coast, ripping apart seawalls and destroying pool decks at beachside hotels and residential homes, that resiliency is obvious to visitor Jason Scharrer.

“Since the last time we were here, this past spring, we’ve noticed the improvements in cleaning up the beach area,” said Scharrer, 50, a regular visitor to Daytona Beach for years with his family from their home in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. “Things are getting picked up and reassembled. A year ago at this time, it was borderline dangerous to walk along the beach, with all the debris.”

After two record-setting years for tourism in Volusia County that reflected Florida’s status as the first domestic tourist destination to reopen as the nation emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, the landscape has changed — and not just because of damage from tropical storms Ian and Nicole.

The world has reopened, offering travelers new options that range from cruises to trips abroad. At the same time, Ian and Nicole pounded the destination’s key beachside hotels, parks and attractions, turning “beach access” into a coveted hotel marquee sign for months along State Road A1A.

As the area’s tourism industry adapts to those factors, the destination continues to grapple with lingering obstacles to tourism growth. In Daytona Beach, that includes the less-than inviting first impression offered around the intersection of International Speedway Boulevard and State Road A1A, the gateway to the core tourist district of the World’s Most Famous Beach.

Amid all that, Volusia County’s tourist development tax collections for the fiscal year that concluded on Sept. 30 finished 3.51% below the year-end total for 2021-22, according to figures from the Volusia County Revenue Division.

In the key Halifax beachside tourism area, collections for the year were down 5.5% compared with the previous year. It’s a period that’s characterized as a “reset year” by many in the industry here.

“We’ve had a couple of spectacular years of record-setting gains in the Daytona Beach area and we’re now seeing those levels normalize,” said Lori Campbell Baker, executive director of the Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“These trends are being seen not only in our destination, but throughout the state of Florida and even the rest of the United States. We know that some folks are venturing beyond our destination, doing bucket-list trips abroad. But the Daytona Beach area is a special place and continues to offer great experiences and value to everyone who visits.”

Orlando, other destinations also weathered declines

Indeed, other destinations also endured periods of decline this past year.

Orange County, home to Walt Disney World, experienced five months of year-over-year monthly declines in bed-tax collections until registering a 1% monthly increase in September. Even so, the county finished the fiscal year that concluded on Sept. 30 with a record collection of $359.3 million, a 6.8% increase over the previous year.

In Brevard County, bed-tax collections for the year were up 9.5% compared with 2021-22, according to Peter Cranis, executive director of the Space Coast Office of Tourism. He credited a bus schedule of Space X launches from Cape Canaveral for boosting visitor interest in the destination.

Statewide, total tourist development tax collections for the state’s 2022-23 fiscal year, which runs July 1-June 30, were $880,908,499, a 27% decline from the $1,202,280,184 collected in 2021-22, according to Florida Department of Revenue . That represents collections by 63 counties that implement the tax out of the state's total of 67 counties.

Statewide, the tourism-marketing agency Visit Florida in November estimated that 35.066 million visitors traveled to Florida during the third quarter of 2023, 1.4% more than during the same period a year ago and 7.9% above the total in pre-pandemic 2019.

The new numbers showed a rebound from a slight second-quarter dip, which industry leaders attributed to increased competition from destinations now reopened after the pandemic.

Visit Florida also stated that Florida welcomed 105.2 million visitors during the first nine months of the year, up from 104.5 million during the same period in 2022. Florida posted a full-year record of 137.4 million tourists in 2022.

In 2023, a reset year after 'grand slam' 2022

Before the storms, Volusia County also had just capped another robust year for tourism.

For the fiscal year that concluded on Sept. 30, 2022, record-high overall tourism bed-tax collections of $33.7 million countywide were more than 20% higher than the previous year, which also set a record.

The county collects a 6% tourism tax on hotels and lodges with half of the revenues going to fund the county-run Ocean Center convention complex in Daytona Beach. The other half goes to the county’s three tourism ad authorities to market their respective areas — the Daytona Beach/Halifax area, Southeast Volusia and West Volusia — as tourist and special event destinations.

It didn’t take long for the impact of the storms to be reflected, with monthly bed tax collections for November 2022, in the wake of the storms, down 15.6% countywide compared with the same month a year earlier. In the coastal districts of Halifax and Southeast Volusia, collections for the month were down 16.5% and 22.8%, respectively.

More: Daytona Beach tourism works to weather impact of tropical storms Ian and Nicole

This past summer also saw year-over-year monthly declines, with collections down 11.5% in June, part of a collective 1.76% drop for the first nine months of the 2022-23 fiscal year. More recently, the opening month of fiscal 2023-24, in October, also saw monthly numbers down by 9.7%, according to partial totals collected through mid-November, the latest figures available.

In case you missed it: In Daytona Beach, summer tourism cools compared with red-hot 2022. Why?

Although that’s not encouraging news, many hoteliers also characterize the declines as part of an expected trend as the world has reopened for travelers in the wake of the pandemic.

“We have been preparing for this leveling off as we began feeling and seeing these demand metrics,” said Jim Berkley, general manager of the 744-room Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, the area’s largest hotel. “It’s all been expected and, frankly, many would tell you — including myself — that the correction was less painful than we had anticipated.”

That opinion was echoed by Bob Davis, president and CEO of the Lodging & Hospitality Association of Volusia County, who has watched seasons come and go for six decades as a leader of Daytona Beach’s tourism industry.

“Last year was a great grand slam,” Davis said, “but this year was better than most. I predict that next year will be better than this year, with more meetings, more conventions and a slight increase in leisure travel as people are watching their budgets.”

Group business expected to thrive in 2024

For Davis, that optimism is fueled by the arrival of a new director for the county-run Ocean Center convention center.

Lynn Flanders, who started in mid-November at an annual salary of $172,620, previously worked as assistant general manager of the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority in Atlanta. A premier meeting facility, it includes a 144,000-square-foot exhibit hall, 25,000-square-foot ballroom, a 5,500-square-foot special event space, 20 meeting rooms, and four executive board rooms.

With a range of experience that includes a familiarity with sports venues and events, Flanders is poised to elevate the destination’s appeal to event planners, Davis said.

“Put on your seat belts,” Davis told members of the Tourist Development Council, an appointed board that advises the County Council on tourism matters, “because she’s going to take you for a ride to the next level.”

Berkley, of the Hilton, also is optimistic about the prospects for group business in the coming year.

“We will be up significantly in our group business (at the Hilton) in 2024 based on our (booking) pace,” Berkley said. “Group travel has rebounded tremendously and Daytona Beach continues to be a very viable meetings and event destination, especially for the associations, sports and youth markets.”

That prediction dovetails with the broader travel industry outlook, said Scott Smith, hospitality professor and director of graduate studies at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Although the advent of virtual meetings has impacted corporate travel planning, the appeal of in-person gatherings has started to re-emerge as COVID fades into the rearview, Smith said.

“People now long for the days of face-to-face interaction,” said Smith, who worked as director of convention services in the early 1990s at the Daytona Marriott, the hotel that is now the 744-room beachfront Hilton.

“So even though a lot of meetings have transitioned to virtual, companies also have realized that they are not accomplishing their goals the way they would if they met in person.”

At the 212-room Shores Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach Shores, the prospect of an uptick in group business has softened the impact of a dip in leisure bookings, said Rob Burnetti, general manager.

“The group picture is more optimistic than the leisure side,” Burnetti said. “You see the demand, the phone calls coming in for group business. I think there’s a little backlog of groups that were not meeting during the pandemic.”

Daytona Aquarium among reasons for optimism in 2024

Looking ahead, tourism leaders also are optimistic about the prospect of new attractions and hotels expected to debut in the coming year.

The Daytona Aquarium & Rainforest Adventure , set to open in early 2024 in the former site of the Burlington Coat Factory store at the corner of International Speedway Boulevard and Nova Road, will feature a 110,000-gallon shark tank and 40 additional tanks with other marine life, as well as alligator, crocodile and snake habitats amid an indoor rainforest with plants and land animals.

“New exciting places to visit within the destination are always a plus for growth and developing more visitors,” said Berkley, of the Hilton.

Also keenly awaited is the grand opening of the beachfront Renaissance by Marriott Daytona Beach Oceanfront by Ormond Beach-based Premier Resorts & Management in the first quarter of 2024.

The new hotel will offer 190 guestrooms and suites, elevated dining, a pool, fitness center and over 8,000 square feet of meeting space. It represents a $45 million investment by the company to build a highly anticipated four-star resort on the site of the former Ocean Breeze Club at 640 N. Atlantic Ave. in the core tourist district.

“Daytona Beach is poised to increase room demand as the destination is upgrading its facilities and renovating its existing facilities,” said Domien Takx, Premier’s vice president of operations.

In addition to opening the new hotel, Premier is planning complete room renovations at its Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Daytona Beach Oceanfront and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Daytona Beach Shores properties in late 2024, Takx said.

The latter hotel is still at work on pool deck repairs of damage received from Ian and Nicole, a process that has taken longer than anticipated due to factors that include environmental requirements related to turtle nesting season, Takx said.

Even so, the effects of the storms are no longer on the minds of guests arriving at the company’s hotels, he said.

“I would offer that very few travelers are avoiding our destination” due to storm-related issues, he said.

Challenge to improve core beachside tourist hub remains

As the area’s beaches rebound, the challenge to improve the experience for visitors in Daytona Beach’s core tourist hub around the Ocean Center continues to be a priority.

The destination needs to find a way to overcome its “reputation of being a low budget, economy, tired, abused town with little magnetisms outside of the newer Speedway activity,” said longtime hotelier Manoj Bhoola, president and CEO of Ormond Beach-based Elite Hospitality Inc.

Elite’s roster of area hotels includes the Ormond Beach Best Western Castillo Del Sol; the Best Western Plus International Speedway; Hampton Inn by Hilton Daytona Speedway Airport; and the Hilton Garden Inn at Daytona Beach International Airport.

This past spring, work began on a $30 million, 17-month makeover of the East ISB gateway from the Halifax River to A1A. A $9.2 million improvement project for A1A north of the ISB intersection also is funded for a projected starting date next year, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

That work can’t be completed soon enough, said Berkley, of the Hilton.

At a recent meeting of the county’s Tourist Development Council, he said that hopes of future hotel development, new restaurants and businesses that could invigorate the core beachside area hinges on improving its appeal now to potential investors.

“The modernization of the optics of the destination is going to have to happen before anyone gets serious,” he said. “The arrival portal in our city looks worse than it has since I first started coming to Daytona in 1981. We need to stop trying to fool ourselves into thinking that’s OK.”

On a recent afternoon, several clusters of homeless people populated the Daytona Beach Bandshell behind the Ocean Walk Shoppes, where longtime anchor restaurant Sloppy Joe’s recently closed its doors after 13 years.

Hoteliers report that the homeless presence has increased since August when a U.S. District judge issued a preliminary injunction that temporarily blocked enforcement of Daytona Beach's panhandling ordinance that's been in place for four and a half years on First Amendment grounds.

Otherwise, the retail center was a virtual ghost town that afternoon, with only a handful of tourists browsing darkened windows of many closed businesses.

“They’ve got to fill the stores,” said Pat Kennell, 68, a retired police officer vacationing next door at the Wyndham Ocean Walk Resort. “Too many stores are empty. You’ve got to have places that are open.”

Generating genuine positive word-of-mouth about the destination’s appeal would amplify an effective “Beach On” marketing campaign being executed by the Daytona Beach CVB, said Rob Burnetti, general manager of The Shores Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach Shores.

“My personal feeling is that we in Daytona feel it has gotten better, but I don’t feel that message has fully reached the traveling public yet,” he said. “We’re doing what we can to get that message across, but it just hasn’t settled in to where people see that much difference in the destination.”

Miami Beach doesn't want spring breakers, but they don't want Miami Beach either. Here are the new top 3 spring break destinations.

  • Miami Beach announced it's "breaking up" with spring break tourism.
  • But data shows that Miami Beach wasn't among the three trending destinations this March anyway.
  • Las Vegas, New York City, and Orlando snagged the highest spots.

Insider Today

Miami Beach is done with spring break tourists. But those tourists were already looking elsewhere.

The City of Miami Beach announced that it's "breaking up" with spring breakers after "unruly crowds, lawless behavior, and a string of violent acts in recent years," a press release in February said.

Hey Spring Break, we're over. 👋 #SpringBreakUp https://t.co/CjCyrLwkPD pic.twitter.com/vxmVtxd7MO — City of Miami Beach (@MiamiBeachNews) March 1, 2024

Young revelers typically flock to Miami Beach in March for weeklong vacations. Some residents have complained about the behavior of those tourists . As a result, this year, local officials implemented "tough" new measures, including bag checks, DUI checkpoints, restricted beach access, license plate readers, and a heightened police force to dissuade rowdy conduct.

But Miami Beach wasn't at the top of tourists' minds this year anyway, according to travel company Booking Holdings.

Data shared by Booking Holdings showed the top 10 trending travel destinations for Americans from March 2 to March 30. Here's the breakdown.

Las Vegas scored the No. 1 spot for most of March, followed by Orlando and New York City

The Nevada city — known for its lavish tourism sector — ranked No. 1 for three out of the four weeks, specifically between March 2 and 23.

Related stories

The only time Las Vegas slipped to the No. 2 spot was from March 23 to March 30.

Las Vegas might be attracting travelers' attention for several reasons, including the Sphere concert venue and the return of F1 racing to the city late last year . There are also celebrity residencies , casinos , lush resorts , and other attractions.

Orlando, located in central Florida, snagged the No. 2 spot from March 2 to March 23. It sailed into the top trending destination spot from March 23 to March 30.

Like Las Vegas, Orlando is a popular American tourist spot for several reasons. The city is near amusement parks like Disney World and Universal Studios, as well as other attractions like the John F. Kennedy Space Center . Although Orlando is not coastal, it's a skip away from beaches like Daytona Beach and Cocoa Beach.

New York City consistently ranked No. 3 throughout March.

New York City is a beacon for American tourists and tourists across the globe. Local sites like Central Park and the Statue of Liberty are popular stops, while the collection of art museums and famed restaurants often draw attention. Depending on the season, there are also several sports teams to watch.

Miami Beach never ranked above No. 4

Based on Booking Holdings' data, Miami Beach peaked at No. 4 among trending destinations from March 2 to March 23. The city then dropped behind South Carolina's Myrtle Beach and Cancún, Mexico, to the sixth spot from March 23 to March 30.

The City of Miami didn't fare much better, ranking sixth for the first two weeks of March before peaking at No. 5 from the 16th to the 23rd.

Miami fell to the 11th most trending destination between March 23 and March 30.
