Additionally, drivers specializing in niche tours or possessing unique knowledge may command higher wages.

  • Median Annual Salary: $36,763 ($17.67/hour)
  • Top 10% Annual Salary: $61,000 ($29.33/hour)

The employment of tour bus drivers is expected to grow much faster than average over the next decade.

Increased global tourism, rising interest in local and international travel experiences, and the expansion of tour companies are driving the demand for Tour Bus Drivers. Additionally, the growing popularity of eco-friendly and cultural tours requires skilled drivers familiar with diverse locales, further boosting employment opportunities in this sector.

Tour Bus Driver Job Requirements

Education: A Tour Bus Driver typically holds a High School Diploma, with a focus on subjects that enhance communication and geographical knowledge. Courses in English, geography, and customer service are beneficial, providing foundational skills for interacting with passengers and navigating routes. While specific majors are not required, electives in tourism or hospitality can offer a competitive edge, emphasizing the importance of a well-rounded educational background in ensuring both safety and an enjoyable experience for passengers.

Experience: Tour Bus Drivers often enter the field without prior experience, learning through on-the-job training programs. These programs equip them with necessary skills, including safe driving practices, customer service, and route planning. Employers may also provide specific training related to the tour content, enabling drivers to share interesting facts and stories with passengers. Continuous learning and improvement in areas such as communication and emergency response are essential for success in this role.

Certifications & Licenses: Tour Bus Drivers typically require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), often with a Passenger (P) endorsement. Some regions may also mandate a specific Tour Bus Operator license or certification, and a clean driving record is generally essential. Additional certifications, such as First Aid or CPR, can be beneficial but are not universally required.

Tour Bus Driver Skills

Passenger Safety Procedures: Tour bus drivers are tasked with briefing each passenger on emergency exits, safety equipment, and protocols before departure. They must also conduct regular inspections of safety equipment, including first aid kits and fire extinguishers, and stay informed on the latest safety regulations and training to ensure a secure environment for everyone on board.

Route Planning: Developing efficient and scenic routes that meet time constraints while enhancing the passenger experience requires extensive knowledge of local geography, traffic patterns, and points of interest. Such planning ensures tours are memorable, smooth, and punctual, reflecting positively on the driver’s professionalism and the tour company’s reputation.

Defensive Driving: The ability to safely navigate a large vehicle through various environments demands a heightened awareness of surroundings and the skill to anticipate potential hazards. Tour bus drivers must adjust their driving in response to the actions of other drivers and pedestrians to maintain safety and comfort for passengers.

Customer Service: From the moment passengers board the bus, making them feel welcomed and valued is crucial for an enjoyable tour experience. Addressing concerns or questions attentively enhances overall satisfaction and increases the likelihood of passengers recommending the service.

ADA Compliance: Familiarity with the accommodations and modifications necessary to ensure all passengers, regardless of physical ability, can access and enjoy the tour is essential. Knowledge of lift systems, seating arrangements, and communication aids is required to provide an inclusive experience.

Emergency Response: In unexpected emergencies, tour bus drivers must quickly assess situations and implement safety protocols to ensure passenger well-being. A calm demeanor and clear communication, coordinating with emergency services when necessary, are imperative.

Tour Bus Driver Work Environment

Tour bus drivers operate in a dynamic environment, primarily within the confines of their vehicle, navigating through diverse terrains and cityscapes. Their workspace is the driver’s seat, equipped with standard vehicular controls and often enhanced with GPS and communication devices to stay connected with tour operators and passengers.

The nature of their work dictates irregular hours, with weekends and holidays being peak times for tours. Dress codes can vary, often leaning towards company-branded attire for easy identification by clients. The social aspect of the job is significant, requiring drivers to interact frequently with passengers, providing not just a service but an experience.

Health and safety are paramount, with drivers adhering to strict regulations to ensure everyone’s well-being. Noise levels can fluctuate, especially in bustling city tours or when engaging with passengers. The pace of work is generally steady, punctuated by periods of waiting or downtime between tours.

Travel is inherent to the role, with some positions requiring overnight stays or long-distance travel, impacting work-life balance. Despite the challenges, the role offers a unique opportunity to meet diverse groups of people and explore new locations, making it appealing to those with a love for travel and customer service.

Advancement Prospects

Tour bus drivers can advance their careers by transitioning into roles with higher responsibility and pay, such as becoming a tour operations manager or starting their own tour company. Gaining experience in diverse routes and specializing in niche tours (e.g., historical, adventure) enhances their value and opens up opportunities for leading more exclusive and higher-paying tours.

Building a strong reputation for safety, knowledge, and customer service is crucial. Drivers can leverage this reputation to negotiate better terms or move into luxury tour segments. Additionally, mastering multiple languages can significantly boost a driver’s appeal to international tourists, potentially leading to opportunities with global tour operators.

Progressing in this career often involves a mix of practical experience, customer service excellence, and strategic career moves, such as identifying and specializing in high-demand tour niches.

Upstaging Trucking is my go to company for reliable skilled drivers that know what it takes to get to the venue and dock with zero issues. With all the options out there you have to be careful who you give the responsibility of gear transport. For my artist, Upstaging is that company. They are the only team I trust!

Chris Gott - John Mayer Production Manager

This is the best job in the world with the best people. I’m very thankful to be a part of the Upstaging team.

I’m not presently aware of any other world class trucking companies. Myself and our mob will stick with what we know works. Service , reliability and dedication are at a premium. So why not use a premium company? Forget shopping. Order immediately.

Mark “Springo” Spring- Production Manager, Paul McCartney

Upstaging is my number 1 trucking vendor in the US because they mirror exactly what I expect and receive in the UK: an unrivalled, reliable and personable service. Every gig on time, every challenge accepted, and every driver working to ensure your gear is secure and the show is the best on the tour so far

After starting in the entertainment business in the 70’s, sliding into the driver’s seat seemed like a natural choice. Now, with many happy years behind me, I’ve made many lifelong friends, and will finish my career here.

I can rent trucks from a lot of people. Trucks and tractors are the easy part. What sets Upstaging apart from the competition is the unparalleled people that make up Upstaging. The drivers, operations staff and front office is what makes Upstaging the class of the industry in both logistics and the condition of their trucks. No one in the trucking industry offers better support or equipment.

I’ve been working for Upstaging for a little over 7 years. It has been quite enjoyable working here. It’s not every day you get to use great equipment, that keeps up in great shape. You get to travel all 48 states and a lot of Canada. There is time to investigate the cities you are in usually. Some of us bring our bikes. You can always find a bike trail to ride. We got some really good benefits and the pay is really good. The office staff is great. They are just a phone call away if you need help. Overall in 43 years of driving this is the best company I’ve had the pleasure to work for.

I’ve been using Upstaging for over 30 years and I would never use anyone else. Their service, drivers, and equipment are second to none. I know my gear will be where it’s supposed to be every single day and I never need to worry about it. I consider everyone there like family. A truly fantastic company.

I have worked with many great people at Upstaging. It feels great to get to the venue and be a part of something so much bigger than myself. When I see the stage all ready to go, I know I had a small, but important part of making it happen. Being a driver has its challenges, but it’s very satisfying. Our support staff does a great job taking care of us on the road. Our equipment is top of the line, and it’s a pleasure to drive a truck and not have to worry about breakdowns. I have been touring for almost 20 years. I wouldn’t want to do it for anyone else!

It’s not just a job it’s a way of life, and life is good..

I have used Upstaging for the past 11 years and I wouldn’t choose to use anyone else.  The touring industry is anything but consistent and predictable, but it is my job to create as much consistency as possible and plan for the unpredictable, which is what I have found using Upstaging.  People make the difference for me, Upstaging has proven to have the most reliable drivers and a support staff that can fix any issue that arises on tour.  They are second to none.

Upstaging Inc. is by far the best move I have made in my driving career. From the best equipment in the industry to the way they treat and respect the drivers is truly exceptional. We are all one big family and I personally haven’t found a better company to call home.

We are NOT your regular trucking company!! Life on the road with Upstaging brings experiences you won’t get anywhere else. Tour drivers are a small, tight knit group that work with PRECISION. We bring rock shows to your city, roll with our friends and we get catering. And catering has bacon

I first Used Upstaging back in 1983. I have continued to use Upstaging on many more projects over the years, as they make it all so easy, and have your problems solved almost before you even knew you had them. Thank you to all at Upstaging for making my life a lot easier over the many miles we have traveled together and looking forward to many more miles with you all.

My wife Dorothy and I have worked for Upstaging for over a decade. I must say that Upstaging is second to none in this industry. We love what we do and the people we do it with. If you're looking for a place to call home, look no further.

Chad McKnight (Driver)

At Upstaging, I don't have to fight for miles. I'm paid by the day and I've got everything I need to get the job done. It's stress free and easy, I'm so glad I found this place

TOUR EDGE DRIVER REVIEWS

Tour edge hot launch c522.

We tested: 9.5°, 10.5°, 12°

Our take: The no-frills design of the Hot Launch C522 is a welcoming one. It’s almost as though this driver becomes easier to trust, since there’s no fiddling with adjustable weight or adjustable hosels here. You simply grab hold and swing away, and in our experience, the results live up to the hype. This driver produced bombs that flew high and straight with moderate spin, with a dose of added shotmaking capabilities.

The details: The springy Diamond Face 2.0 cupface design improves ballspeed and a deep rear sole weight boosts MOI for added stability, especially on off-center strikes. Additionally, the A.R.C. Acoustic Engineering helps deliver a solid feel and sound.

Tour Edge Hot Launch E522

We tested: 10.5°, 12°, HL

Our take: We’re refreshed to see a driver that bills itself as being the “easiest driver you will ever hit.” And in our trials, we agree, the E522 makes it a cinch to get the ball airborne and comes with built-in slice control to help keep the banana balls at bay. Like the C522, its no-frills design makes it easier to focus on hitting good shots without worrying about whether your clubhead is calibrated in a way that best fits you.

tour driver company

Tour Edge Hot Launch E522 driver

The details: The Houdini Sole features an area towards the rear section that has added mass to push the CG deeper and lower in the clubhead for a higher launch and added stability on off-center strikes. It also comes with a flexy Diamond Face 2.0 clubface and, most notably, an offset hosel design and internal heel weighting to fight slices and hit more fairways. Comes with a shorter-than-average shaft as well for added control and consistency off the tee.

Tour Edge Exotics C722

We tested: 9.5°, 10.5°

Our take: The slightly smaller (445cc) look and feel of the C722 exudes what it means to be a driver made for better players. It’s both forgiving and playable, making it ideal for players who want added distance without sacrificing shotmaking control. The adjustability is great too, meaning you can fine-tune your settings and either set it and forget it or make minor tweaks to ballflight based on when and where you play. Either way, we suspect another big win for Tour Edge with this one. It’s also one of the best sounding drivers we tried this year.

tour driver company

Tour Edge Exotics C722 driver

The details: The Ridgeback and Carbon Wrap tech combine to add power behind the golf ball and helps move weight closer to the clubface for greater flex in the heel and toe areas resulting in more forgiveness across more of the clubface. A Front/Back weighting system allows for adjustments in MOI and CG for either added forgiveness or greater shotmaking maneuverability. Sound Diffusion Ribbing makes of an incredible sound at impact and, finally, the Diamond Face VFT (variable face thickness) tech makes the entire clubface hotter for more distance on center and off-center strikes.

Tour Edge Exotics E722

Our take: Some players want a driver they can rely on to hit more fairways—and in doing so, fly as far as possible. The E722 is hellbent on providing maximum forgiveness and distance thanks to a variety of technologies that combine to a 5500 g/cm2 MOI rating, which in layman’s terms is as high as weve seen. This means minimal twisting on off-center hits and straighter, longer tee shots.

tour driver company

Tour Edge Exotics E722 driver

The details: Comes with Ridgeback and Diamond Face VFT Technology for added power, better feel and greater forgiveness across more points on the clubface. Also comes with a 30-gram weight placed at the trailing sole edge of the clubhead, pushing the CG extremely low and very deep in the clubhead for more stability and a tighter shot dispersion. The Carbon Wrap tech on the crown further reduced unwanted weight to optimize the CG location and produce greater power. Lastly, an internal sound diffusion ribbing in multiple locations helps create a super-satisfying sound at impact.

Tour Edge Exotics Pro 721

Our take: The “Pro” in Pro 721 ought to be taken seriously as this driver is designed for better players who want low-spin performance off the tee, but don’t want to give up on custom tuning capabilities. Our testers said it “checks all the boxes for better players who want shotmaking maneuverability” and it “looks and feels like a better player’s driver should look and feel.”

tour driver company

Tour Edge Exotics Pro 721 driver

The details: There are two interchangeable weights located on the heel and toe region of the sole for flight tuning, a Ridgeback crown design with Carbon Wings in the heel and toe areas for a lower/forward CG for lower spin and more strength and, lastly, Tour Edge’s Diamond Face VFT tech and an adjustable hosel allow for even more ballflight/loft configurations.

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.
Fantastic experience - efficient use of time, great itinerary. Well-informed and interesting guide who is also just a great person.

Well organised and informative
I like the HYOH (Hike Your Own Hike) part of this guided tour. I like the freedom to do as strenuous or as little as I want at the National Park stops. I like that yes, you can do things as a group but you aren't stuck going as fast or as slow as anyone else. Just mind what time to be back to the meeting spot & go for it!

Intrepid Travel

Judd was excellent, and very knowledgable, he was very prepared and i would recommend Intrepid to my friends and family
Our trip was great! Judd from Intrepid travel made the entire trip so easy and was so patient and quick to adapt to all of our requests. We had no issues the entire week. Accomondations were usually a LaQuinta and every day we had something cool planned to see.

Amadeo

  • Excellent - 130 reviews for USA tours
The tour was great, especially our guide Pasquale, who brought more flavour to all places we visited and did his best to show and teach us everything, meet everyone’s expectations and create a great atmosphere. Our driver Jacob also was very kind and supportive. Hotels had a good standard and necessary itinerary adaptions were on spot. In my point of view, the only shortfall was tour start and end (meeting/drop-off) points; which would work quite better starting and ending in a hotel, also offering pre and post tour accommodation for the ones arriving early or leaving late. Meeting points in public spaces when you have luggage is not comfortable and might cause problems to travellers. All the rest was great!
Thanks a lot. I had a very good 8 days from 22nd of Jan till 29th 2024 with your team and literally suggest your company to all. Your tour leaders were responsible, respectful, helpful, and supportive. Goodness bless you guys.

This was a wonderful experience brought to life by a passionate and caring tour guide.
Excellent tour. Our guide Robin, was very informative and had an entertaining flair. We went to a series of awe-inspiring viewpoints and did some wonderful hikes in what were referred to as “the mighty five” of Utah. An unforgettable trip with a terrific group of people and a very knowledgeable, gregarious guide.

Excellent. Great guide, driver, weather, hotels, food. Great itenirary. Love love this trip.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Although the tour was very expensive- over $2000 for 3 days is over the top- it wss a great experience, saw lots of wildlife and the guide was outstanding
What an amazing experience this was; from the greeting and pick up by our guide/driver, to the phenomenal sights and the historical references that accompanied them! I am so pleased. This was an exceptionally planned tour that successfully met all of my needs. I would not change a thing and look forward to future adventures with them.

Globus

This was our second trip on Globus and both experiences were fantastic.
I was skeptical of a group tour, particularly by coach. The experienced guide, Jason, along with driver Shauna, changed my view completely.

My first experience with an organized tour like this. Expense alone will limit future trips. Much more walking than my wife was prepared for. This alone reduced her enjoyment. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and thorough with his planning and execution. Andrew has a fun personality and very personable. One item that disappointed me was the shuttle from airport to resort at both ends of the
Insights Tours are always amazing and this one was no exception. Nice balance of free time to relax and experience Hawaii on your own with visits to places on the islands to experience the culture. Learned a lot of Hawaii’s history throughout our visit. Overall a lovely experience and would highly recommend if you want to visit Hawaii and learn more about the islands.

Infinite Adventures

It was my first group trip and also my first camping trip. I have to say it was one of the best trips I've been on. It was an adventure! We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at Remote Camp. Tory and Dave took care of everything and made sure everyone had a great time. No matter what problem you had, they always helped each other! Dave cooked delicious food, we had marshmallows by the fire in the evening and it felt like family. It's a great tour and I can only recommend it to anyone! It certainly wasn't my last tour with Infinite Adventure! Many thanks to Tory, Dave and Natalie (who you could ask any question you wanted to know beforehand) for this unforgettable time! :)
Jump on the bus with Infinite Adventures for a magnificent Alaskan expedition! Dave and Tory are excellent guides and will keep you informed about the areas you visit and give expert advice. I found this to be a truly joyful experience!

The Coyote Trip

The Coyote Trip

  • Excellent - 10 reviews for USA tours
From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.
Great tour. We were a group of 7 and had lots of fun. Tour guides were really nice and friendly and itnwas a great combination of nature and the big cities.

Good time with lots of riding in the van going to interesting places
We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

The tour was amazing, great and tour guides:).

Bamba Travel

Bamba Travel

  • Good - 1,683 reviews for USA tours
A hectic and fast paced trip, starting with early mornings. Loved Niagara Falls and being able to go to the Canadian side for one night (remember to apply for a Canadian Esta and bring your passport). Pennsylvania and Amish country side was a treat. Wish we had more time there. Love hearing about American history. Then Washington DC- amazing city. We disembarked after touring DC monuments and aeronautical museum and spent two more days in DC. Wharf, eateries, sights and monuments within reach.
Bamba Travel was the only tour operator which responded and agreed to help me plan my tour in Hawaii. Although I would have liked a more thoroughly organised tour like pick up from the cruise terminal and transport to the Kualoa ranch organised, I had to take the public bus by myself. It was a bit daunting but Bamba gave me some instructions. At Hawaii it quite easy and safe to take public transport during the day. Bamba was helpful at every step. A bit slow with regards to correspondence bec of time differences as they are in the USA but they would respond daily. Thank you Bamba for helping me organise a tailored plan to meet most of my needs. I had a great time in Hawaii.

Moscow Metro

Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).

Richly Decorated Central Hall of Novokuznetskaya Station

Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.

Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line

Subway station "revolution square".

Sign “Ploshchad Revolyutsii” in Archway with Bronze Figures

Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.

Subway station Arbatskaya

Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.

The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.

The depth of the station is 41 meters.

Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.

Subway station Kievskaya

There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.

Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).

The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.

= Ring Line Subway =

It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.

The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.

On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.

At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.

Subway station Belorusskaya

The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya  Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.

The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.

Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.

Subway station Novoslobodskaya

Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street:  the station is located at the very beginning of it.

Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.

Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.

Subway station Komsomolskaya

The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.

This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.

The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.

Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.

The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.

In conclusion...

Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!

  • Bombing in Moscow Metro On March 29, 2010, another tragic event happened in Moscow that shocked not only the citizens of the Russian Federation, but also many people from countries that oppose the threat of terrorism. In the early morning rush hour, two women bearing suicide weapons blasted themselves in the subway trains of the Moscow Metro.
  • The Best Redesign of Moscow Metropolitan Map 2013 Russia's leading internet and graphic design agency has won an online vote for the best redesign of the Moscow Metro map. Art. Lebedev Studio is a design company in Russia, founded in 1995 by Artemy Lebedev. They redrew the Moscow Metro map for a second time in three years, with even cleaner graphics and a raft of new details and won more than 50% of the online vote.

What is a Tour Bus Driver?

Responsibilities of a tour bus driver.

  • Safe Transportation: The primary responsibility of a tour bus driver is to safely transport the touring party, including musicians, crew members, and equipment, to each destination on the tour. This involves operating the bus in a safe and responsible manner, adhering to all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Tour Logistics: Tour bus drivers work closely with tour managers to ensure the smooth execution of the tour schedule. They need to be punctual and organized, making sure that everyone arrives at each venue on time, allowing for setup and soundchecks.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Tour buses are large and complex vehicles that require regular maintenance to ensure their safety and reliability. Tour bus drivers are often responsible for conducting pre-trip inspections, identifying any mechanical issues, and reporting them to the appropriate personnel.

  • Communication: Effective communication is key to a successful tour. Tour bus drivers need to keep the tour manager informed about the status of the bus, any delays, and any other relevant information. They also need to communicate with the touring party about departure times, breaks, and other logistics.
  • Emergency Preparedness: In the event of unexpected situations such as accidents, breakdowns, or inclement weather, tour bus drivers must remain calm and know how to respond appropriately. This may involve contacting emergency services, coordinating with the tour manager, or finding suitable accommodations if the bus becomes temporarily unusable.
  • Customer Service: Tour bus drivers often interact with musicians and crew members on a daily basis. Providing excellent customer service and maintaining a positive attitude contribute to a comfortable and enjoyable tour experience for everyone on board.
  • Adherence to Regulations: Tour bus drivers must adhere to all relevant transportation regulations, including hours-of-service regulations that dictate driving and rest periods to prevent driver fatigue.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Why this Ethiopian navy officer ended up as a metro driver

tour driver company

'I've seen everything there is to see overground'

tour driver company

Tall, smiling Worku Bedasso is a bit of a legendary figure at the Moscow Metro. When asked how he ended up working here, he says noncommittally: "It just happened!"

In Soviet times, the young lieutenant of the Ethiopian Navy came here to study on an exchange program: first in Georgia in 1985, and a couple of years later in Azerbaijan. While Worku was learning how to build socialism, a civil war broke out in his native Ethiopia, and “old-school” officers were no longer needed by the new state. His wife and children remained in Ethiopia; they did not want to go to Russia. A few weeks later, the Soviet Union collapsed and foreign students based in Baku were sent to Moscow.

In Moscow, he was granted refugee status and issued with a work permit; however, during the 1998 economic crisis it was hard to find work. Then, his new Russian girlfriend, Olga, suggested he try working at a metro depot, since he was good with machinery. After six months of training, the former officer became a metro driver assistant.

“The first time felt strange and even scary,” Worku recalls. “But a military background helps. A metro driver needs to have stress tolerance, army discipline and a desire to work hard.”

While on the job, Worku enrolled at the Railways Institute (MIIT) to get a degree in engineering. However, it turned out that combining work and studies was too difficult and in 1999, he decided to quit the job...

tour driver company

By 2010, when he had decided to return to the Moscow Metro, Worku had been working for a logistics company in Moscow and Sochi, had married Olga and received a Russian passport. He once again had to make the journey from a driver assistant to a Category 1 driver, and looking back on it today, he is quite happy with his life: “It's fun to drive a train and get good money for it.” Furthermore, in all his years of working, he has never had any accidents: he attributes it to good luck.

That said, at the age of 62, he has started to think of ending his career as a driver and move to a job at a metro depot. “When you are young, you don’t feel the workload, but at my age it’s getting a bit hard! I don’t want to part with the metro. I have seen everything there is to see overground.”

'I’ve said everything about Dostoyevsky. But I’ve loved trains since I was a kid!'

Anton Khlynin studied Russian language and literature at Moscow State University and even spent a year and a half as a PhD student. But at some point, he realized it was time to stop. Anton seems a very serious man until he turns with his back to you and you see a biker's braid popping out from under the collar of his uniform.

“At university, I had a research topic that I thought was very interesting - the perception of Dostoevsky’s works in Scandinavian countries,” - says Anton. “He is the main writer there. I took it up with great fervor, but as I was writing my thesis, I found out that this subject had already been thoroughly researched by another academic. I was extremely disappointed.”

Academia no longer appeals to Anton, although he is still interested in literature: he even writes himself, albeit articles about railways. In 2007, he decided to fulfill his childhood dream and go work as an engine driver.

“I have been a fan of railways since the age of five. My first memory is seeing a locomotive on the tracks.”

tour driver company

Anton is now 40 and he recently qualified as a 2nd grade driver, by coming in the top three places in a professional competition. Unlike his colleague, Worku, Anton has seen many emergency situations in his career.

“Once, a passenger fell on the tracks at Park Pobedy [station] (dark blue line), but I managed to hit the breaks in time. Also, there are diggers who are just looking for adventure,” says Anton.  “When I was a kid, I was a member of a railway modeling club, and then of a literary society. I had things to do. Whereas they, it seems, have nothing to do!"

Yet, despite everything, Anton insists he does not regret having changed his career so drastically, even though he admits seeing trains in his dreams, too. “I used to occasionally dream I was running a red light, or that my train was derailing. But now all that is gone and I sleep normally!”

When asked whether knowledge of literature helps him in his work, Anton replies philosophically: “My general level of education helps me in my life. And work is part of life.”

'I drive 2,000 people during rush hour!'

When you look at tall, youthful Vadim Kalugin, it is hard to believe that he is one of the oldest drivers on the Moscow Metro, a veteran of labor. Vadim is 55 years old, and he has spent most of his life underground. Now he is a 1st grade driver. He joined the Moscow Metro straight after returning from military service, on advice from his mother-in-law.

“She herself worked in the aircraft industry and knew what responsible work meant. And she liked the uniform that metro drivers had,” Vadim recalls. “By the way, we are sometimes called ‘underground pilots’. But a pilot carries 300 people on a plane, while I drive more than 2,000 people during rush hour! I think our job involves even more responsibility.”

tour driver company

According to Vadim, the Moscow Metro is not only the most beautiful, but also the most reliable. “Even in the 1990s, during the economic crisis, when many people did not receive their wages, metro drivers were always paid on time and metro trains were on schedule. After all, if the metro stops, the whole of Moscow will stop.”

Vadim says that the main thing in his work is to strictly follow the instructions. “In the metro, everything happens at lightning speed! The driver has no right to make a mistake. In my 34 years of work, I have never had a single reprimand,” he says, adding that, sadly, he is still going to retire next year.

Biden-Harris Administration finalizes strongest-ever pollution standards for cars that position U.S. companies and workers to lead the clean vehicle future, protect public health, address the climate crisis, save drivers money

Final standards will expand consumer choice in clean vehicles and build on historic progress in U.S. auto manufacturing under President Biden’s Investing in America agenda

March 20, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, March 20, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced final national pollution standards for passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty vehicles for model years 2027 through 2032 and beyond. These standards will avoid more than 7 billion tons of carbon emissions and provide nearly $100 billion of annual net benefits to society, including $13 billion of annual public health benefits due to improved air quality, and $62 billion in reduced annual fuel costs, and maintenance and repair costs for drivers. The final standards deliver on the significant pollution reductions outlined in the proposed rule, while accelerating the adoption of cleaner vehicle technologies. EPA is finalizing this rule as sales of clean vehicles, including plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles, hit record highs last year.

EPA projects an increase in U.S. auto manufacturing employment in response to these final standards, consistent with the broader Biden-Harris Administration commitment to create good-paying, union jobs leading the clean vehicle future. Strong standards have historically contributed to the U.S. leading the world in the supply of clean technologies, with corresponding benefits for American global competitiveness and domestic employment. Since President Biden took office, companies have announced more than $160 billion in investment in U.S. clean vehicle manufacturing and the U.S. auto manufacturing sector has added more than 100,000 jobs.

These standards will provide greater certainty for the auto industry, catalyzing private investment, creating good-paying union jobs, and invigorating and strengthening the U.S. auto industry. Over the next decade, the standards, paired with President Biden’s historic Investing in America agenda and investments in U.S. manufacturing, will set the U.S. auto sector on a trajectory for sustained growth. Additionally, the final standards will lower costs for consumers. Once fully phased in, the standards will save the average American driver an estimated $6,000 in reduced fuel and maintenance over the life of a vehicle.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan will join President Biden’s National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi today at an event in Washington, DC to announce the final standards and how they build on President Biden’s historic climate and economic record. The event will be livestreamed starting at noon EDT.

“With transportation as the largest source of U.S. climate emissions, these strongest-ever pollution standards for cars solidify America’s leadership in building a clean transportation future and creating good-paying American jobs, all while advancing President Biden’s historic climate agenda,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan . “The standards will slash over 7 billion tons of climate pollution, improve air quality in overburdened communities, and give drivers more clean vehicle choices while saving them money. Under President Biden’s leadership, this Administration is pairing strong standards with historic investments to revitalize domestic manufacturing, strengthen domestic supply chains and create good-paying jobs.”

“President Biden is investing in America, in our workers, and in the unions that built our middle class and established the U.S. auto sector as a leader in the world,” said President Biden’s National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi . “The President’s agenda is working. On factory floors across the nation, our autoworkers are making cars and trucks that give American drivers a choice – a way to get from point A to point B without having to fuel up at a gas station. From plug-in hybrids to fuel cells to fully electric, drivers have more choices today. Since 2021, sales of these vehicles have quadrupled and prices continue to come down. This growth means jobs, and it means we are moving faster and faster to take on the climate crisis – all thanks to the President’s leadership.”

Statement from United Automobile Workers : “The EPA has made significant progress on its final greenhouse gas emissions rule for light-duty vehicles. By taking seriously the concerns of workers and communities, the EPA has come a long way to create a more feasible emissions rule that protects workers building ICE vehicles, while providing a path forward for automakers to implement the full range of automotive technologies to reduce emissions.”

Light- and Medium-Duty Vehicle Final Standards

The final standards announced today, the “Multi Pollutant Emissions Standards for Model Years 2027 and Later Light-Duty and Medium-Duty Vehicles,” build on EPA’s existing emissions standards for passenger cars and light trucks for model years 2023 through 2026. The standards continue the technology-neutral and performance-based design of previous EPA standards for cars, pickups, and vans, and leverage advances in clean car technologies to further reduce both climate pollution and smog- and soot-forming emissions. EPA is finalizing the same standard proposed for MY 2032 while allowing additional time for the auto sector to scale up clean vehicle manufacturing supply chains in the first three years covered by the rule.

Annually, the net benefits to society for the light- and medium-duty final rule are estimated to be $99 billion. The final rule is expected to avoid 7.2 billion tons of CO2 emissions through 2055, roughly equal to four times the emissions of the entire transportation sector in 2021. It will also reduce fine particulate matter and ozone, preventing up to 2,500 premature deaths in 2055 as well as reducing heart attacks, respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, aggravated asthma, and decreased lung function.

EPA received extensive feedback on the proposed rule, including through written comments, testimony at public hearings, and other stakeholder engagements. The final standards were informed by the best available data in the public record and rigorous technical assessments. Like the proposal, EPA’s final rule gives manufacturers the flexibility to efficiently reduce emissions and meet the performance-based standards through the mix of technologies they decide is best for them and their customers. EPA’s analysis considers a broad suite of available emission control technologies, and projects that consumers will continue to have a wide range of vehicle choices under the final rule, including advanced gasoline vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and full battery electric vehicles.

Compared to the existing MY 2026 standards, the final MY 2032 standards represent a nearly 50% reduction in projected fleet average GHG emissions levels for light-duty vehicles and 44% reductions for medium-duty vehicles. In addition, the standards are expected to reduce emissions of health-harming fine particulate matter from gasoline-powered vehicles by over 95%. This will improve air quality nationwide and especially for people who live near major roadways and have environmental justice concerns.

Investing in America’s Clean Transportation Future

The final rule reflects the significant investments in clean vehicle technologies that industry is already making domestically and abroad, as well as ongoing U.S. market shifts and increasing consumer interest in clean vehicles. The Biden-Harris Administration is also directly supporting communities across America in moving towards a cleaner transportation future, including by building a national network of EV chargers and alternative-fuel stations; ensuring domestic manufacturers have the critical minerals and materials they need to make EV batteries; and funding clean transit and clean school buses, with priority for underserved communities. President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is focused on growing the American economy from the bottom up and the middle out – from rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure, to creating a manufacturing and innovation boom, to building a clean-energy economy that will combat climate change and make our communities more resilient.

Here's what leaders are saying about the final rule:

“I’ve always said Michigan automakers are the best in the world. And this is their moment,” said Senator Debbie Stabenow (MI) . “I appreciate EPA’s commitment to engaging with our automakers and autoworkers to develop an ambitious but achievable final rule. It represents an opportunity for union workers to continue to build the vehicles of the future right here in the U.S. and tackle the climate crisis.”

“My priority will always be to protect American jobs and our environment, keep the United States at the forefront of automotive manufacturing, technology, and innovation, and keep our domestic industry strong and competitive,” said Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) . “The EPA has worked with all stakeholders to reach this final rule that includes hybrid and electric vehicles, and ensure these goals are achievable. It’s important to protect vehicle choice – the number of available models has doubled in the last three years, and in the last year sticker prices are down 20%. We need to continue to work on making sure that these vehicles are affordable to everyone, that we have the infrastructure in place to make them accessible and practical for consumers, and bring jobs back to the U.S. The bottom line is that the future of the industry must be created in America and driven by American workers, and we are all committed to working together toward that future.”

“The future is electric. Automakers are committed to the EV transition – investing enormous amounts of capital and building cutting edge battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, traditional hybrids and fuel cell vehicles that drive efficiency and convert petroleum miles to electric miles,” said John Bozzella, President and CEO, Alliance for Automotive Innovation . “Consumers have tons of choices. But pace matters. Moderating the pace of EV adoption in 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030 was the right call because it prioritizes more reasonable electrification targets in the next few (very critical) years of the EV transition. These adjusted EV targets – still a stretch goal – should give the market and supply chains a chance to catch up. It buys some time for more public charging to come online, and the industrial incentives and policies of the Inflation Reduction Act to do their thing. And the big one? The rules are mindful of the importance of choice to drivers and preserves their ability to choose the vehicle that’s right for them.”

“This is a day to celebrate American achievement. The step EPA is taking today will slash climate pollution and air pollution,” said Amanda Leland, Executive Director of Environmental Defense Fund . “It will bring more jobs for workers, more choices and more savings for consumers, and a healthier future for our children. The U.S. has leapt forward in the global race to invest in clean vehicles, with $188 billion and nearly 200,000 jobs on the way. Jobs in communities across the country, in places like Michigan, Nevada, and Kentucky. These clean car standards will help supercharge economic expansion and make America stronger.”

“These standards make clear that securing America’s global leadership in manufacturing and securing a better future are 100% aligned,” said Albert Gore, Executive Director of the Zero Emission Transportation Association . “We have everything we need today to meet and exceed this standard, and that means more of the vehicles sold in America will be made in America.”

Anti-drone companies market radio jammer devices online despite FCC rules outlawing them

Signal jammers have become increasingly popular with the rise of drones and surveillance technology.

Several online retailers and drone technology companies are marketing the sale of radio frequency jammers as drone deterrence or privacy tools, sidestepping federal laws that prohibit such devices from being offered for sale in the U.S.

Radio frequency jammers are devices that interfere with communications systems, usually by sending out competing radio signals to confuse nearby electronics. It is a decades-old technology that federal regulators have tried to crack down on, but interest in jammers persists because people can use them to keep away unwelcome drones, disable security cameras or block Wi-Fi networks.

The Federal Communications Commission has warned that jammers can interfere with emergency communications, disrupt normal phone use and have other unintended consequences such as confusing airport navigation systems . According to the FCC , jammers are illegal to sell and may not be operated, marketed or imported into the United States. In general, even local police aren’t legally allowed to use them.

“These jamming devices pose significant risks to public safety and potentially compromise other radio communications services,” the FCC says on its website.

The manufacture, importation, sale or offer for sale of jamming equipment violates Section 302(b) of the Communications Act of 1934, the FCC says. An FCC representative confirmed Friday that the commission’s position remains unchanged.

But those warnings haven’t stopped some companies from marketing the devices online. These companies take many forms: from Amazon third-party sellers to separate online stores based in China to small domestic companies that specialize in drone-related equipment.

After NBC News published this report, an FCC spokesperson said Wednesday that the commission had several ongoing investigations into jammer sales including on Amazon. Those investigations have not been previously disclosed.

Maverick Drone Systems, a Minnesota-based company, has been offering a portable anti-drone “RF jamming unit” for $2,999 on its website, with China-based company Tatusky listed as the supplier. The jammer, which vaguely resembles a shotgun, is “easy to use” and has a range of 1-2 kilometers, according to the listing.

“Anybody could pick one of these up tomorrow,” Maverick CEO Adam Shaw said in a phone interview.

Shaw declined to say how many jammers he had sold, but he said that, because of the price, most consumers aren’t interested. He said there’s been interest from large corporations and state government agencies that have watched the rise of drone warfare in Ukraine and Israel and want to prepare for the possibility of domestic drone terrorism .

“Could this happen in your backyard? That’s a real concern for a lot of people,” he said.

Shaw said that some jammer sales have fallen through after lawyers for his potential customers weighed in.

“We’ve talked to some big Fortune 500 companies that, immediately, their IT departments and people are hot to trot on getting anti-drone equipment, and then two weeks later, they’ll say they talked to their legal team and they won’t let them do it,” he said.

“There’s a lot of people that want this tech, and there’s people afraid to use it because of what it might interfere with in controlled airspace,” he added. “That’s the big factor, so I don’t think it’s going to go gangbusters and sell a lot until we see a serious event” such as a terrorist attack.

Shaw said he’s not concerned about his own potential liability under FCC rules because he said he believes regulatory compliance is the duty of manufacturers, not resellers such as him. He said he believes the items he buys from abroad are government-approved.

“As far as the FCC is concerned, they should reach out to these manufacturers and stop it from there or work with them,” he said. “All this stuff has to be approved before we even get it.”

The FCC declined to comment on any individual seller or marketer including Maverick. In an email to NBC News on Friday, the commission pointed to the policies outlined on its website, which says that federal law bars the agency from approving jamming devices.

DJI Drones at SZ DJI Technology Co. Headquarters As Company Said To Be Willing to Share Drones' Data With Chinese Government

“Unlike other radio transmitting equipment, jamming equipment cannot be authorized by the FCC because the main purpose of jamming equipment is to interfere with radio communications,” the website says .

Robert McDowell, a former FCC commissioner, said any device that jams radio frequencies is illegal per se unless an authorized federal agency is the one using it.

“Jammers are illegal because they could be used for nefarious purposes and cause chaos,” he said.

McDowell, now a partner at the Cooley law firm, said there’s legal risk both in importing and in selling such devices. Customs officers at ports of entry may impound them or the FCC may act, he said.

“Retailers can be in trouble if they’re selling devices that are not authorized by the FCC,” he said.

Maverick, though, is not alone. On Amazon, nine independent sellers recently offered “jammer” devices for sale for as little as $25.63, according to searches by NBC News. The product listings said they could be used for a variety of situations, including interfering with microphones.

All nine sellers described themselves as based in China. In messages to NBC News, several said they had no information to share beyond what was on the product pages. One seller sent a message confirming that they would ship the “jammer” to California, writing, “US customers can buy it.”

NBC News did not purchase or test any of the devices and has not independently verified whether the products being delivered are accurately described by the marketing.

Some of the Amazon product listings suggested that radio frequency jammers were a part of everyday life rather than a highly regulated product. One said: “The blocker is easy to operate and can be used immediately after startup, suitable for confidential meeting, business negotiation, school, hospital, research and development center, etc.”

Some Amazon customers appeared to be suspicious of the listings. Some wrote in reviews that the products were simple white-noise machines overhyped as jammers. At least one person flagged a device as illegal.

“Illegal device …hey FCC,” one customer wrote in a review last month.

All nine product listings disappeared from Amazon within two days after NBC News contacted the Seattle-based retailer. Amazon confirmed in an email that its policies prohibit jamming devices and said it continuously monitors its marketplace to prevent third-party sellers from listing banned products. Amazon did not offer an explanation for how the nine sellers got past the company’s monitoring.

On eBay, three different sellers recently had products listed for sale as jammers. A spokesperson for eBay said the company looked into the products and determined they were lawful white-noise machines or similar audio blockers, not FCC-prohibited radio signal jammers.

“eBay is committed to maintaining a safe and vibrant community by ensuring goods sold on our platform are safe and legal,” the company said in a statement.

Searches on Google’s shopping site returned links to dozens of devices marketed as signal jammers including anti-drone devices. Google does not handle the sales itself but instead directs shoppers to third-party sellers such as China-based electronics retailers. The retailers generally say they can ship to the United States, and their marketing materials aren’t specific to military or law enforcement uses. One China-based seller posted a video on Google-owned YouTube demonstrating how its product would block mobile phone signals.

A spokesperson for Google said the company had reviewed examples that NBC News shared and was in the process of removing listings that violated its policies against the sale or promotion of such devices.

Sometimes it’s not clear who is behind online sellers. One retailer calls itself a “professional global signal jammer manufacturer online jammer store” but does not disclose its location. It did not respond to a request for comment. The frequently asked questions section of its website includes this exchange:

“Will Customs Confiscate My Package?”

“So far, we have not encountered this situation.”

It’s not known how many people may have unlawfully purchased radio frequency jammers from the various websites reviewed by NBC News. At least some of the companies say they sell to customers outside the U.S., where the strict regulations of the FCC do not apply.

At the opposite end of the market for radio signal jammers are military suppliers, government contractors and other companies that generally do not aim their products at consumers. Many of these companies have websites marketing their products, but they do not list a price or provide an option to buy immediately. Instead, they list an option to “request consultation” or “connect with an expert.”

An FCC spokesperson pointed to the commission’s standing advisories about enforcement and to a 2020 federal interagency advisory specific to drone defense.

On Wednesday, after NBC News published this report, the FCC said it had several inquiries — including one related to Amazon — related to the marketing of jammers.

“We have several ongoing investigations into retailers, including Amazon, for potential violations of Commission rules related to the marketing and sale of equipment without proper FCC authorization,” FCC spokesperson Jonathan Uriarte said in a statement.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday regarding those investigations.

The FCC has a history of cracking down severely on radio frequency jammers and their sale online. In 2016, the commission said it fined an online Chinese retailer , CTS Technology, $34.9 million for marketing hundreds of models of illegal jammers over two years and selling some to undercover FCC staff.

There has been no comparable fine since then, although other Chinese retailers are still marketing radio frequency jammers to Americans online, according to an NBC News review of their websites. NBC News could not determine if any of them had shipped to the U.S.

The FCC has also targeted buyers in years past. In 2018, the FCC said it fined a Dallas warehouse operator $22,000 for using a jammer to prevent employees from being on their phones at work. In 2016, the commission said it fined a Florida man $48,000 for using a jamming device on his daily commute to keep people in other vehicles from talking on their cellphones . In 2014, Marriott agreed to pay $600,000 to settle allegations that it was jamming non-Marriott Wi-Fi signals at a Nashville, Tennessee, property.

Dale Hatfield, a former chief engineer at the FCC, said the FCC’s priorities have shifted over the years to other topics such as fighting robocalls.

“Their enforcement activity seems to be more directed to those things that consumers see more directly,” he said.

Hatfield, an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, said it’s difficult to determine how much of a problem illegal jammers are because signal interference is often brief and difficult to document. And for the same reason, he said, jamming cases are difficult for the FCC to take on.

“It can be very intermittent,” he said. “How do you go back and figure out what the cause was?”

McDowell, the former FCC commissioner, said that the commission’s enforcement is largely driven by the types of complaints it receives.

“Usually the enforcement process works when an outside party brings a situation to the FCC’s attention,” he said.

Jamming devices have many potential uses, from confusing an unwanted drone to disrupting a Wi-Fi network to disabling a doorbell camera. On a Reddit message board dedicated to Ring doorbell cameras, some posters complain that people are using jammers to knock out their cameras and avoid detection while stealing. One Reddit poster said it was ironic that Amazon appeared to be profiting from both sides: Ring is a division of Amazon, while Amazon is also a marketplace for buying devices that may disable Ring cameras.

Amazon did not respond to a question about jamming Ring devices.

Jammers or radio frequency “shields” are also a frequent topic of discussion in online forums dedicated to people who believe that the government or others are singling them out for in-depth surveillance, a belief or phenomenon sometimes known as “ gangstalking .”

The potential market for anti-drone systems such as radio frequency jammers includes large corporations and organizations that are worried about drone terrorism but are not legally allowed to use jammers. In a letter last year to congressional leaders , four major sports leagues including the NFL urged Congress to allow state and local law enforcement to use counter-drone capabilities.

Prison officials in some states have said they’d like legal authority to use jammers to halt cellphone use by inmates.

But under current law, the list of government agencies with authority to buy and use radio frequency jammers is short, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the Energy and Defense departments.

Companies that specialize in drone countermeasures often have their eye on foreign buyers.

IXI Electronic Warfare, a drone defense company, warns on its website that drones are a potential threat to sports stadiums, prisons and airports, and it says it can help to “neutralize threats in seconds” including with a radio frequency jammer that it calls Dronekiller. But in general, stadium operators, prisons and airport authorities don’t have the legal authority to buy such a product in the U.S.

“Most of our focus is overseas as regulations that you are aware of are much more relaxed,” the California-based company said in an email. It said it does offer sales in the U.S. but only to authorized federal agencies.

The idea that such devices might spread in the U.S. is concerning to some experts in anti-drone countermeasures.

Zachary Kallenborn, an adjunct fellow with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a bipartisan policy organization in Washington, said that radio frequency jammers have the potential to interfere with an endless list of sensitive systems from civilian flight control to hospital communications.

“It makes sense for them to be cautious about letting these things loose,” he said.

General Motors Quits Sharing Driving Behavior With Data Brokers

G.M. had provided information about braking, acceleration and speed to LexisNexis Risk Solution and Verisk, firms that generated driver risk profiles for insurers.

General Motors said Friday that it had stopped sharing details about how people drove its cars with two data brokers that created risk profiles for the insurance industry.

The decision followed a New York Times report this month that G.M. had, for years, been sharing data about drivers’ mileage, braking, acceleration and speed with the insurance industry. The drivers were enrolled — some unknowingly, they said — in OnStar Smart Driver, a feature in G.M.’s internet-connected cars that collected data about how the car had been driven and promised feedback and digital badges for good driving.

Some drivers said their insurance rates had increased as a result of the captured data, which G.M. shared with two brokers, LexisNexis Risk Solutions and Verisk. The firms then sold the data to insurance companies.

Since Wednesday, “OnStar Smart Driver customer data is no longer being shared with LexisNexis or Verisk,” a G.M. spokeswoman, Malorie Lucich, said in an emailed statement. “Customer trust is a priority for us, and we are actively evaluating our privacy processes and policies.”

Romeo Chicco, a Florida man whose insurance rates nearly doubled after his Cadillac collected his driving data, filed a complaint seeking class-action status against G.M., OnStar and LexisNexis this month.

An internal document, reviewed by The Times, showed that as of 2022, more than eight million vehicles were included in Smart Driver. An employee familiar with the program said the company’s annual revenue from Smart Driver was in the low millions of dollars.
