Plan to follow a barbecue trail (Joe's BBQ in Blue Ridge, GA is a must-stop), take a Tennessee whiskey tour , go blue-crabbing in Charleston, SC, or binge on beignets , oysters , and po-boys in New Orleans (Fat Tuesday, indeed). When in New Orleans, splurge on a room at the historic Maison de Ville in the French Quarter—a favorite of Elizabeth Taylor's, among other A-listers. And because nothing pairs better with food than tunes, make sure to check out the live music scene.

Shop Until You Drop

Plan an entire vacation around one of your favorite activities: shopping. Savannah, GA, is famous for its Southern charm and historic streets , including the Downtown Design District, the City Market, and the boutique-lined Broughton Street ( Zia is a local favorite)—three prime places to snag some stylish souvenirs. And don't forget to fuel up at some of the city's best eateries !

Is exercising in your blood? Hike, horseback-ride, jet-ski, zipline, ski, rock-climb—there are so many sister-friendly ways to get moving in Colorado. If you’re looking for information on some of the top golf destinations in the world to help plan your next golf trip, we’ve got you covered. Below is a ranking of the Best Summertime Buddies Destinations in the United States and overseas, as selected by Golf Digest’s Course Ranking panelists and members of our Places to Play Facebook group. In conjunction with our primer on how to plan the best summer golf trip you and your buddies will ever take and our tips on how to make the most of your buddies trip , you’ll be all set to have the time of your life at any of these great golf spots.

UNITED STATES

1. Oregon Coast

Bandon Dunes exerts a stronger gravitational pull than almost any place in golf not named St. Andrews. Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald all rank among Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Courses in America, and the Sheep Ranch, opening in June, could be the best of them all.

2. Carmel/Monterey Peninsula, Calif.

Before Bandon Dunes, the Monterey Peninsula was the king of public American destination golf. Pebble Beach is No. 7 on our list of America’s 100 Greatest. Spyglass Hill, the Links at Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills and even modest Pacific Grove highlight a deep bench that gets better with age.

3. Pinehurst / Southern Pines, N.C.

The “home of American golf” has experienced a major revitalization with upgrades to No. 2, the addition of the Cradle short course and a total reconstruction of No. 4. Mid Pines & Pine Needles, in Southern Pines, have also been masterfully reworked, and nearby Tobacco Road adds a theatrical element to the mix.

4. Kohler, Wis.

There’s plenty to explore among four resort courses spread across two sites. Whistling Straits (Straits Course) is the most raucous and typically gets top billing as a PGA Championship and Ryder Cup (2020) venue, but many visitors prefer Blackwolf Run’s quieter, more idyllic River Course.

5. Sand Valley / Green Lake, Wis.

Sand Valley, the latest chapter in Mike Keiser’s destination golf opus, features three stunning options cut from sandy pine forests in central Wisconsin—the original Sand Valley course, Mammoth Dunes and the quirky Sandbox. A side-trip to the Links Course at Lawsonia, a playground of 1920s architecture, is a no-brainer.

6. San Francisco / Half Moon Bay

Public golf in San Francisco runs the gamut from modest, beloved city courses like Sharp Park and Lincoln Park to the once modest but now rebranded TPC Harding Park, site of this year’s PGA Championship. Half Moon Bay, 30 miles south, brings a more luxurious approach plus golf holes peering out to the Pacific Ocean.

7. Hilton Head Island / Savannah, Ga.

Options begin with Sea pines’ classic Low Country courses (Pete Dye’s Harbour Town and Heron Point, and the remodeled Atlantic Dunes), or Palmetto Dunes’ tour of the architectural past with courses by Robert Trent Jones (’60s), George Fazio (’70s) and Arthur Hills (’80s). May River, meanwhile, is modern and mesmerizing.

8. Sea Island, Ga.

Sea Island’s Seaside course remains one of the Southeast’s grand courses, but residents Mark and Davis Love III have been busy with classical retrofits of the resort’s Retreat and Plantation layouts (reopened in 2019). They’ve also restored Brunswick Country Club (Donald Ross, 1939) and added Sanctuary Golf Club, a Seth Raynorinspired public option.

9. Milwaukee

Buddies golf trips passing through Milwaukee are likely headed to Erin Hills, the vast, heaving site of the 2017 U.S. Open just 45 minutes northwest. They also might stop at one of the area’s strong public facilities like Brown Deer Park, where Tiger Woods played his first PGA Tour event as a professional, or The Bog, a countryside Arnold Palmer design with 118 bunkers.

Given Maui’s idyllic setting, bad places to play. Yet there’s only one must-play venue, the Plantation Course at Kapalua, recently revamped by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The Gold and Emerald courses at Wailea deserve consideration as well, as does King Kamehameha rising 750 feet above the island’s north shore.

11. San Diego / Carlsbad, Calif.

No golf trip to San Diego is complete without a visit to the city-owned North and South Courses at Torrey Pines, host of the 2021 U.S. Open. But more gold awaits in SoCal’s crinkled hills in the form of Omni La Costa Resort, Tom Fazio’s Rams Hill, and Barona Creek, reopening this summer after a comprehensive renovation.

12. Traverse City, Mich.

Traverse City is central to an abundance of fine resort golf. Arcadia Bluffs (Bluffs and South courses) is an hour southwest. Forest Dunes (Forest Dunes and The Loop, plus a new 10-hole short course) is 90 minutes east. And Boyne Highlands, with four 18-hole courses, is within a two-hour drive north.

13. Phoenix / Scottsdale

The biggest challenge facing participants on a buddies trip to the Phoenix area is how to narrow the choices, and how to fit it all in. The Valley of the Sun offers endless combinations of multi-round golf days, including We-Ko-Pa, Troon North, Grayhawk, Talking Stick, Wickenburg Ranch, TPC Scottsdale and the remodeled Papago Municipal.

14. Napa Valley, Calif.

Mornings swinging clubs at Silverado Resort, Chardonnay Golf Club, Eagle Vines or nearby Hiddenbrooke can lead to afternoons swirling wine at dozens of tasting rooms throughout Napa Valley, where the moderate climate and off-course attractions are as much of a reason to come as the golf.

A trip here can go several directions: Innisbrook Golf Resort and the famed Copperhead Course are 45 minutes north of the Tampa airport; Tom Fazio’s World Woods is another 30 minutes north, and Black Diamond Ranch is just beyond that; an hour southeast are the Red, Blue and Black at Streamsong, all among Golf Digest’s top-rated public courses.

INTERNATIONAL

1. St. Andrews, Scotland

A pilgrimage to the Home of Golf could simply consist of playing the seven courses of the St. Andrews Links Trust (the Old Course, the Castle Course, the New, etc.). However, short excursions to nearby authentic links like Crail, Elie and Lundin should be on any itinerary, and Gleneagles and Carnoustie are each about an hour’s drive away.

2. Republic of Ireland / Northern Ireland

I was immediately captivated by the fairy-tale appearance of Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia.

Walking the cobblestoned streets within the fortress-like walls of the old city transported me back to medieval times.

The city is small enough to explore on foot, and there's plenty to entertain history and architecture enthusiasts. Enjoying a coffee or a beer in the Town Hall Square while people watching is a highlight of my European travels.

Although many people visit Tallinn as a day trip from Helsinki, which is a two-hour ferry ride away, it's worth staying here for a few days and heading into the Estonian countryside. The roads are often quite empty and incredibly peaceful.

I enjoyed Estonia so much that I returned twice more in the 18 months after my first visit.

I've enjoyed visiting Oman, a country in the Middle East.

Dubai gets a lot of attention for its luxurious travel opportunities , and many know Qatar because it recently hosted the World Cup, but nearby Oman should not be skipped.

After all, Oman's capital, Muscat, provides an excellent gateway to the country.

A stroll along the beautiful Corniche will take you along the water and by the bustling Grand Bazaar. For those who love hikes, there are plenty of options in Oman, including several easily accessible trails in Muscat that offer great city views.

Better still, the amazing Wadi Shab is less than two hours from the capital city and is one of the best hikes I've ever experienced . The trail takes you through narrow gorges and across streams and ends with a surreal swim through incredible caves.

It's an experience so breathtaking I'd expected it to be packed with tourists, but it wasn't when we visited. We only saw a handful of people, which allowed us to really enjoy our trip.

I've seen many parts of Africa, but Namibia may just be my favorite spot.

I have been fortunate to go on safaris in Kenya , Botswana, and Tanzania, but Namibia is my favorite travel destination of the bunch.

While there, we rented a campervan and did a self-drive tour of the country, allowing us to explore independently. Yet again, we avoided the crowds and the campsites were usually just us and local animals.

Waking up to the sounds of monkeys, elephants, and even lions was a special treat, especially knowing we were safe inside our campervan.

In addition to the wildlife, there's a lot to explore in Namibia, including colossal dunes, which we hiked up and surfed down —undoubtedly the trip highlight for my children.

Sri Lanka showcases a lot of what Asia landscapes have to offer.

Asia has some beautiful beaches, but Sri Lanka has beaches and tea plantations, mountains, rocks, waterfalls, and more.

We visited Sri Lanka last year and hired a driver and guide who showcased the diverse landscapes of this island country. The food was terrific and extremely cheap — our family of four was fed for less than $10 on most occasions.

The locals I interacted with were incredibly friendly and the island is also small enough to allow for in-depth exploration in a relatively short time.

Costa Rica is an excellent place to visit in Central America.

Growing up in Texas, my wife has been to Mexico many times since the state shares a border with the country. But to explore somewhere new, smaller, and in the same region, we chose to have our honeymoon in Costa Rica .

Although it's still popular, Costa Rica offers an authentic travel experience as I feel it has yet to be overrun by tourists. Like the other countries on this list, it has a diverse landscape, from white-sand beaches to rainforests to volcanoes, so there's plenty to do.

Sweden is a country steeped in Viking and Iron Age history and one of the best ways to witness relics from these eras is to head to Broby bro.

This graveyard is over 1000 years old and the stories of those who are buried here live on today.

Broby bro is best experienced with a tour guide for they can bring to life the tales of the Viking heroes that once ruled the land.

There are dozens of these stories to learn about but none so interesting as ‘Estrid’ whose skeleton was found in the Christian section of the Broby bro graveyard in 1995.

2. Jarlabanke Runestones

A visit to the Jarlabanke Runestones and Jarlabanke Causeway is a great way to get to grips with Viking history and how their rule shaped the lay of the land forever.

Earl Jarlabanke is one of the most infamous Viking rulers who many believed abused his power for his own gain.

He did however create the Jarlabanke Causeway that runs its 116m course in Täby, which Jarlabanke once owned all of.

The Vikings were incredible civil engineers and in a visit to the Jarlabanke Runestones you can learn about how their bridge building and road construction changed the world in which they lived.

The tiny town of Sigtuna is home to just 8000 people and can be found sitting to the north of Stockholm.

This quaint and charming Swedish town is steeped in history and is home to some beautiful olde-world townhouses.

Sigtuna town looks out over Sigtuna Bay which is tranquil and incredibly picturesque, if a little icy in winter.

Highlights of a visit to Sigtuna include a walk around the ruins of St Olof Church.

When the winter snows settle on the tumble down medieval church is starts to look almost fairytale like.

Aside from taking time to stroll through Sigtuna winding streets you can visit Steninge Palace and Rosberg Palace too if you are particularly interested in architecture.

4. Stockholm Archipelago

The Stockholm Archipelago is one of the most impressive landscapes in all of Europe, home to some 24,000 islands that sit in the Baltic Sea.

Typically travellers associate island hopping with South East Asia, or the Caribbean, but in a short one tour trip from Stockholm city centre you can be in an island paradise, just a comparatively chilly one.

What makes the Stockholm Archipelago so incredible is that many of the islands are uninhabited and are true wildernesses.

Naturally, the Stockholm Archipelago is best experienced by boat.

You can kick back and relax or there are some tour providers who let you take the helm.

5. Natural Ice Fields

There are dozens of natural ice fields that surround Stockholm city centre and you can take your pick as to where you want to explore.

No need to have ever skated before as the guys and girls who run tours of the ice fields are fantastic teachers and by the end of the day you will feel as if you are ready to trail for the Winter Olympics…maybe.

The best season for ice skating in the Stockholm area of Sweden is between December and March.

This is a great day out for everyone; solo travellers, couples, families and big groups.

You will skate through some mesmerising landscapes, you’ll never want to skate in a rink again.

6. Sörmlandsleden

One of the most loved hiking routes in all of Sweden is Sörmlandsleden.

The trail starts about a 40-minute drive from Stockholm city centre and runs for 1000km through some of Sweden’s most pristine pine forest.

Obviously, on a day trip you cannot cover the full 1000Km but nevertheless you can get a taste for this phenomenal landscape.

You will pass through dense pine forest, walk alongside perfectly still lakes and out on to rocky plateaus.

Many people choose to hike up to Sweden’s highest peak, Kebnekaise, stop for a picnic lunch and admire the views before returning to the car to drive back to Stockholm.

7. Drottningholm Palace

Drottningholm Palace is the private residence of the Swedish royal family and is built on the island of Lovön.

Built in the 16th-Century Drottningholm Palace is a piece of history perfectly preserved in time.

Although each generation of the Swedish royal family has left their mark on the palace the 16-century facade remains the same.

In the centuries to come Swedish royals added a palace theatre and even a Chinese Pavilion.

A walk around the palace’s baroque garden is a real treat, especially when in full bloom in the spring months.

You can take a tour of the public rooms and the gardens too.

The complex is open throughout the year.

It is said that Birka was Sweden’s first city and it can be found on the island of Björkö or ‘Birch Island’. As one of the most significant trading spots of Vikings this is a city rich in history and cultural heritage.

In fact, Birka is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The highlight of a visit to Birka is taking a tour of the Viking Village.

Step inside traditional Viking homes, learn about daily life in Viking times and learn about how the black soil of Birka helped the city to thrive.

Once you have finished in the village head to Restaurant Särimner for a hearty lunch overlooking the sea.

Gävle is something of a hidden gem.

This charming town sits 100 miles to the north of Stockholm and is famed for being the home of Sweden’s best chocolate.

Many people enjoy taking a visit to the Swedish Railway Museums to see the locomotives of yesteryear, others prefer to take a gentle stroll around Boulogne Skogen City Park which is especially beautiful in autumn.

If you fancy something a little bit different book a session at the Dome Adrenaline Zone.

One thing that is particularly great about Europe is that all major cities are incredibly well connected, either by road, railway or by air.

Flights from Stockholm to Helsinki fly multiple times daily meaning you can have a flying visit to the Finnish capital should you so wish.

Take a wander down Mannerheimintie and pop into the National Museum.

Once you have toured the impressive museums head down to Parliament House or perhaps Kiasma, the city’s best loved art gallery.

The most iconic landmark in Helsinki is the rusty-red Uspenski Cathedral.

Standing proudly overlooking Helsinki Harbour do not miss this amazing architectural gem before you fly back to Stockholm in the late evening.

Malmö is a majestic city that can be found in the south of Sweden.

With cobbled streets and vast city squares there is so much to explore in the course of a day trip to Malmö.

The first port of call should be Malmö Castles that was built by the Danes in the 16th Century.

Gripsholm Castle is not only incredibly photogenic but is home to a truly unique collection of Swedish artworks and furniture that date back over 400 years.

Once you have toured the castle’s interiors be sure to take an hour or so to roam the castle grounds.

Stopping by the deer paddock to take a moment to observe these chilled out creatures is a treat.

13. Lake Mälaren

Lake Mälaren, or Lake Malar, is one of Sweden’s natural jewels.

Covering 1,140 km² Lake Mälaren is the third-largest freshwater lake in the country.

During a day visit to Lake Mälaren you can drop by Gripsholm Castle or even Drottningholm Palace for a flying visit but many people prefer to head straight to Långholmen.

This is a sandy beach area that sits on the shores of Lake Mälaren and is the perfect place to relax and unwind, especially in summer.

Since 2021, the search for places that are “good for kids” surged 83% on Yelp — showing how important it is for families to find kid-friendly spots, the crowd-sourcing app and business directory said. That interest led Yelp to create a list of top destinations for a family getaway.
