Beer Lovers — Book One of These 'Beercations' for Your Next Getaway
Fans of wine have vineyards , harvests, winery tasting rooms , tours, and destinations around the globe to indulge their love of the grape. Cruises , travel groups, and weekend getaways centered on wine have long been popular, taking travelers afar to explore their favorite beverage. Chatting with winemakers and tasting room staff is often as enjoyable as sipping the wine.
Beer also has plenty of fans, and craft breweries likewise have the appeal of small, independent producers anxious to talk about their brews. Craft beer sales are increasing, and the number of small breweries in the United States is growing. Further, a 2019 survey conducted on behalf of Visit Anaheim indicated that tasting tourism is increasing as "seven in 10 Americans have traveled to a destination specifically to sample the alcohol in the region." The same survey tells us that 72% of beer drinkers have spent vacation time going to a tasting at a local brewery. Vacations based on visiting breweries and doing beer-related activities even have a name: "beercations."
If this puts you in the mood to visit a brewery or two, we have some ideas for destinations with plenty of craft breweries and other features that make for a worthy beercation. Several of these cities are known for their beer production, but there are a few up-and-coming beer cities on this list. With this bit of inspiration and a little planning, you'll find your own favorite beercation destination.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
It seems only right to start with Grand Rapids, known as "Beer City" in recognition of its more than 80 breweries within an hour of downtown and its "Beer City Ale Trail." But Grand Rapids, set on the Grand River about 30 miles from Lake Michigan, has more to offer than beer. The Grand Rapids Art Museum , the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts , and the Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives should all be on a visitor's itinerary. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum , also in Grand Rapids, displays memorabilia from the president's time in office and offers a holographic tour of the White House as it was during his presidency. The Grand Rapids Downtown Market houses more than twenty indoor food vendors, restaurants, a rooftop greenhouse, and an incubator kitchen for food startups and entrepreneurs. Founders Brewery , modeled after a German beer hall and set in a former truck depot, offers a wide selection of seasonal and year-round beers. City Built creates a wide range of brews and serves food with a Puerto Rican flavor. If you need a change from beer tasting, try some hard cider made from apples grown in the local area, another Grand Rapids specialty.
Denver, Colorado
The Mile High City, rich in history and diversity, is home to world-class museums, sporting events, and an extensive array of hotels from luxurious to historic to haunted. With the majestic Rocky Mountains as a backdrop, national park adventures are just a day trip away. Denver's approximately 150 breweries make it a major player in the craft brewing scene. Enjoy the extensive variety of breweries on your own, or choose from the many beer and brewery tours. The Lower Downtown Denver Craft Beer Tour includes a historical walking tour. The Denver Food and Craft Beer Tour explores Denver's culinary scene paired with local craft beers, and Rino Beer and Graffiti offers a glimpse of Denver's street art scene. With so many options to choose from, the biggest problem for beer enthusiasts will be deciding which to select. The Grateful Gnome is a casual brewery and sandwich shop featuring live music some nights (and the occasional Grateful Dead cover band). Odell Brewing Company in RiNo is family and employee-owned, and all tips are donated to local charities. Briar Common , a popular destination near Mile High Stadium, is as much about the food as the beer. Liberati Osteria serves a unique assortment of beer-wine hybrids called oenobeers—beer made from grapes.
Charleston, South Carolina
Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure
Renowned for its southern charm and hospitality, the city of Charleston is rich in history, but it also offers incredible contemporary restaurants, shops, and art galleries. Chosen for its architecture, theaters, churches, and gardens, Charleston is home to the Spoleto Festival USA , one of America's most significant performing arts festivals. Visitors to this lovely city may enjoy a historic Charleston harbor cruise, horse-drawn carriage tour, or perhaps a spooky walking tour of the city's most haunted spots. Tucked into the landscape of cobblestone streets and centuries-old mansions is evidence of Charleston's expanding brewery industry. Commonhouse Aleworks serves a full menu to accompany a selection of craft beers. Rusty Bull Brewing Co. is family friendly with food trucks, live music, and craft beers ranging from pale ales to hearty stouts. For organic seasonal brews, visit the Freehouse Brewery located on the scenic banks of the Ashley River. Dog-friendly Munkle Brewing Company specializes in Belgian and German brews. Pool tables, TVs, outdoor tables, and cornhole add to the atmosphere. With a cool taproom and pub grub including coal-fired pizzas worthy of a fine Zagat review, Edmund's Oast Brewing Company is a must-visit brewery in Charleston. Pub and Brewery Tours offers intimate walking tours and a bus tour complete with tales of Charleston's colorful past and stops at three historic pubs. Charleston Brews Cruise is another bus tour option and includes samples of the unique brews at each stop.
Ithaca, New York
The Finger Lakes region has long been known for their vino (specifically, the rieslings and ice wine, though their lighter-bodied reds aren't to be overlooked). However, the beer scene just four hours from NYC is worth traveling for. The epicenter of the Finger Lakes beer scene is, of course, Ithaca Beer Co. Visitors love their indoor-outdoor taproom almost as much as they love the brewery's signature Flower Power IPA. The other heavy hitter in the area is Southern Tier Brewing Company , named for the southwestern part of New York state known as the Southern Tier. Southern Tier is now widely distributed in New York City and they have taprooms across the country — but it all started at their brewery in Lakewood, New York, which you can visit for a hefty pour of Pumpking in the fall (or the classic Southern Tier IPA at any time of year). Continue the tour de Finger Lakes beer at spots like Grist Iron Brewing Company (Burdett) and Bottomless Brewing (Geneva).
Flagstaff, Arizona
While Arizona may conjure up thoughts of a hot, dry desert, the town of Flagstaff, located in the northern mountains of the state, boasts four distinct seasons. With summer temperatures in the low 80s, breathtaking panoramic foliage in autumn, plentiful snow in winter, and a gorgeous assortment of spring blooms, adventures await all year long. The Historic Downtown and Railroad District is home to vintage buildings now transformed into shops, restaurants, galleries, and breweries. Located on Historic Route 66, the Mother Road and Dark Sky Brewing Co. both partner with neighbor, Pizzacletta , to serve excellent beer and Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizza. Historic Barrel and Bottle House offers upscale bar fare and a wide selection of craft beer on tap. Lumberyard Taproom and Grille is located in a former lumber yard with a taproom, eatery, and patio with a fire pit. These and others are all within walking distance of one another, and most are dog friendly. A short drive south will take you to Verde Brewing Company , That Brewery , and others. Perhaps you'll want to plan your next "beercation" around one of Flagstaff's festivals. Among other fests, Flagstaff Blues and Brews , an outdoor beer and music festival, is held every June, and Flagstaff Brew HaHa , a beer tasting event representing more than 60 local, regional, and national brewers, happens every January.
Portland, Maine
A stroll through this delightful peninsula city offers historic mansions, quaint shops, restaurants, and ocean views. The lobster is delectable, and there's that iconic lighthouse (the most-photographed lighthouse in the U.S.), dating back to the 1700s. In recent years, Portland has become popular for its large number of excellent breweries packed into a not-so-large area. In fact, the city tops the list with the most craft breweries per capita with 18 breweries per 50,000 people. One of the many notable stops is Foulmouthed Brewing , with its family-friendly atmosphere, delicious beer, and impressive menu. The dog-friendly Rising Tide Brewing Company has a cool layout to go along with excellent beer, a fun ambiance, and a selection of food trucks. For an informative tour with great samplings, try the Allagash , known for superb Belgian-inspired beers, games for the kids, and tasty food truck offerings. The close proximity of many of the brew bars allows visitors to pub crawl on their own, but there are tours guaranteed to heighten the experience. Maine Brew Bus Tours offers a variety of unique experiences including Bike and Brews , Walk, Talk, and Taste , Port City Running Brew Tour , and the Brews Cruise in addition to an assortment of bus tour options.
San Diego, California
The Golden State receives credit for starting the craft brewing movement in 1965 when a young man named Fritz Maytag took over the failing Anchor Steam Brewery and introduced new beers based on lost styles. With around 1,000 craft breweries today, the state is a top location for beer tourism. That made it a bit difficult to settle on one California city, but year-round, San Diego has much to offer visitors in addition to craft beer — nearly perfect weather, beaches, mountains, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, a vibrant downtown, wineries, and great food. With more than 140 breweries, it's easy to find one wherever you may be in the area. Take a tour in a vintage Swiss safari vehicle for a unique brewery experience downtown or in the north county area with Scavengers . Book a unique experience with the San Diego Beer Train Trolley Tour. At Mission Brewery in the East Village, you're welcome to bring your own food and book an hour-long tour that includes tastings. Little Italy's Ballast Point offers casual dining indoors or outside. Border X Brewing features Mexican-inspired beers including Abuelita's Chocolate Stout and Horchata Golden Stout, both rich with spicy aromas. So many breweries, so little time.
Stowe, Vermont
New Englanders have come to see Vermont as a beer mecca, and between the farm-to-table food paired with hop-filled brews and VT's après-ski culture, it's not hard to see why. Perhaps the most iconic brewery in Vermont is The Alchemist — their brew pub has been around since 2003 in Waterbury, Vermont. Known for their unfiltered IPAs, the must-try beer is Heady Topper, which you've almost certainly heard your New England friends rave about. In addition to their long-standing Waterbury brew pub, The Alchemist just debuted a beer garden in Stowe in summer 2021. While in Stowe, you can't miss von Trapp Brewery , Stowe Cider , and Idletyme Brewing . Plus, for a luxury stay — whether you're coming to Stowe for a ski-and-beer weekend or to enjoy the fall foliage — you can't do better than Topnotch Resort , right in the heart of Stowe.

ALASKAN CRAFT BEER TREK 2023
"A great beer trip from Juneau, and a car trip from Anchorage through Fairbanks. Trip had insights to the breweries making for a personal experience with the owners and brewers. The road trip from Anchorage to Fairbanks was a great introduction the main Alaskan thoroughfare allowing for overnight stays along the route and and course multiple brewery visits. Visiting Denali NP was a great excursion. The beer scene and beer law is very different in Alaska and reminded me of the initial craft beer vibes. I would certainly revisit Alaska just based on this alone.
Great breweries and great tour which is very worthwhile.”

Kurt is an exceptionally passionate beer drinker and advocate, who excels in sharing this passion with others. His enthusiasm for beer is infectious, and while working with him I can tell that every detail is considered when creating a memorable, beer-filled experience for friends and clients alike.
I can think of no better guide, or companion, for your Epic Beer Trip. Kurt is a brilliant navigator of Scotland and its treasured pub life, and he certainly knows a lot about beer.
We have developed a great partnership with Captain Kurt and his Beer Trippers as they now prepare for their 3rd annual trip to DogHouse Edinburgh! The group are always such fun to host and we love to share our beery love and Scottish hospitality in the setting of our beer themed hotel! We look forward to the next visit!
It was a pleasure to host a lovely group of people at The BrewDog Outpost in Manchester talking all things beer and brewing. The trip was clearly well planned and thought out by Captain Kurt. Hopefully I’ll catch some more Epic Beer Trippers next year!
We’ve been very privileged to host Kurt and his Beer Trippers on the Epic Beer Trip to Scotland over the last few years. For me it’s great to meet people with such different backgrounds and beer heritages. Campervan is a highly-regarded microbrewery that sells predominantly in Scotland, so there are few chances for people outside of the UK to enjoy the beers. Epic Beer Trip offers a unique opportunity for visitors and hopefully we give an insight into the brewing traditions of Scotland, with a view to the thriving modern beer culture we enjoy here now.
We really enjoy working with Captain Kurt and Epic Beer Trips. He brings great groups to the brewery, full of interesting people, and they fit really well with what we’re doing at Ballykilcavan.
Captain Kurt and the Beer Trippers were great fun to host and we can’t wait to have the group return next year! The trips are really well organised and everyone had a blast visiting different cities and breweries across the North. See you again soon!
We had the absolute pleasure of working with Captain Kurt and his team of Beer Trippers twice over a few years and look forward to working with him again. Not only is he a charming and fun guide to his team of trippers, but highly professional as well, he puts in so much work and effort to organize the best for his clients. Plus, as a company that prides itself on customer service we were so happy to work along side someone who clearly loves what he does and is happy to go the extra mile so his clients gets the absolute gold standard of service from his company. We love Epic beer Trips and long may they come back to Scotland to drink Epic beer with us!

PLAN YOUR USA CRAFT BEER BREWERY ROAD TRIP
If you’re looking for some of the best craft beer brewery road trips in the United States, look no further! With cool breweries from Boston to Ashville , North Carolina to Cleveland , and more, there’s certainly several you can include on your next brewery road trip.
Brewery Road Trip with the Best American Breweries
Table of Contents
East Coast Breweries
Trillium Brewing Company – Boston, Massachusetts
Our brewery road trip now takes us back to New England. Boston tends to have been “the first” for a lot of things in the U.S. and craft beer in Boston is no exception. Back in 1984, Sam Adams became one of the first craft beer breweries in the U.S., and the city has been producing tastier and more innovative brews ever since. That’s where Trillium comes in…
Located down a little alley on the edge of Southie, an unassuming sign adorned with a flower marks the entrance to Trillium Brewing Company. Its “taproom” is barely large enough for a dozen patrons to stand in. But a trip to Trillium isn’t about the atmosphere; it’s about having a pint of truly amazing beer.
In 2016, Trillium was rated the world’s third-best brewery. Let that sink in; this little three-year-old upstart in Southie beat out all those European breweries with hundreds of years of history and hard-to-pronounce names.
Not only that, three of Trillium’s IPAs – Congress Street, Summer Street, and Melcher Street – have been ranked as among the best beers in the world. Hopheads love them for the upfront bitterness, usually only present in West Coast brews, combined with bursts of citrus flavor.
In addition to their location in Southie, Trillium also operates a taproom in Canton and a summer beer garden on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, and they’re in the process of building a much larger taproom just around the corner from their current location.
You can stay at the Hyatt Centric Faneuil Hall after you have had your fill of Trillium’s world-class beer.

Dirt Farm Brewing – Bluemont, Virginia
Our brewery road trip now takes us to the Mother of States. Dirt Farm Brewing in Bluemont, Virginia is somewhere where you can truly enjoy a brew with a view! The family-run brewery is set on a hill in Northern Virginia, with a stunning mountain vista. It’s based in Loudoun County, which is becoming a popular craft beer and winery destination; however, I must say, out of all the breweries I’ve tried in the area so far, Dirt Farm is the best all-around experience!
They grow their own hops and experiment with local produce in their beers. The results are some absolutely delicious craft beers. It’s well and truly a farm to table brewery or, in their words, “plow to pint”! Alongside the beers, they serve delicious flatbreads and pretzel bites. Oh, and their merchandise is pretty cool, too, if you’re a country gal or guy!
If you visit, make sure you try the “Stout of Control” stout and one of their homegrown beers, which are chosen based on the best harvest crops that year. The family that runs Dirt Farm Brewing also runs a winery down the road (Bluemont Vineyard) and a Pick Your Own farm (Great Country Farms) across the way, so there’s definitely something for everyone in the area!
Kelly Mongan blogs at A Pair of Passports .
Lickinghole Creek Farm Brewery – Richmond, Virginia
Richmond, Virginia has become an East Coast craft beer mecca — and is the next stop on our brewery road trip. Full stop. That said, while urban craft beer breweries have taken over many corners of this historic city, what’s still rare in the Richmond area are farm breweries, like Lickinghole Creek Farm Brewery, located about 45 minutes from downtown Richmond in nearby Goochland County. If you make the drive out to their location, and journey down the long gravel road to the brewery, you’ll find yourself passing their hops, pumpkin, and other ingredient fields before you roll up to their warehouse. This sets the mood to truly appreciate their beers, made with as many fresh, local ingredients as possible.
Their tasting room is largely situated outside on a large patio and seating extends to an open field adjacent to the warehouse with plentiful picnic tables and corn hole boards, plus an area for kids to play. Whether you’re here for a wedding, their famous sunflower field, one of their festivals-slash-beer releases, or just to enjoy a nice night outside with your dog and kiddos, there’s a little something chill for everyone. Brews to try include the Enlightened Despot, Magic Beaver, Three Chopt Tripel, and many of their riffs on these core beers as well as their huge selection of seasonal varieties.
Luke and Meagan blog at Two Restless Homebodies .
Fullsteam Brewery – Durham, North Carolina
Head down south for the next stop on our brewery road trip. Located in Downtown Durham, Fullsteam is a big part of the community in the city and is recognized throughout North Carolina for its contributions. The owner, Sean Lilly Wilson, was behind the famed Pop the Cap movement which successfully led to the raising of alcohol limits and relatively freeing up brewers to make stronger beers.
Aside from his strong activism against limits, Wilson is also passionate about sourcing ingredients from local, organic farmers. Step inside the taproom and you’ll learn that “Plow to Pint” is more than just a sign or t-shirt. It’s the Fullsteam way.
They do brew new beers pretty regularly according to seasons, but their mainstays always seem to grow better after each sip or glass. My personal favorite is Rocket Science, a 7% American IPA that goes well with pretty much any meal. For starters, though, I think you should also grab a flight that’s served on a board shaped like North Carolina. That’ll give you a nice feel for five of their top-notch beers before moving on to Rocket Science or something else.
Carl Hedinger blogs at NC Tripping .
Sierra Nevada Brewery – Asheville, North Carolina
Our brewery road trip once again takes us down south. Sierra Nevada Brewery is one of the largest craft beer breweries in the United States, so it’s only fitting that they have a massive production facility to go along with their success! Their 185-acre campus in Asheville, North Carolina houses a massive 400-seat restaurant, outdoor dining terrace and beer garden, outdoor amphitheater, and an impressive and expansive brewhouse.
They offer a variety of tasting and tour options, but tours fill up quickly and reservations must be made online in advance. Of course, you always have the options to just grab a pint of their signature IPA or any one of 22 other options on draft and enjoy the stunning scenery of the western North Carolina mountains. I’m a big fan of their Kellerweis, which is one of the only American Hefeweizens made using the traditional Bavarian style of open fermentation. It was a refreshing addition to the live music that accompanied the warm summer air during our visit!
When you’ve had your fill, you can relax in your room at the Double Tree by Hilton Downtown near the River Arts District. Or try a more rustic stay at the Deer Run Cabin . And don’t forget to visit the Biltmore Estate in Asheville.
Sam and Toccara blog at Forget Someday .
Cerveceria La Tropical – Miami, Florida
In 1888, Cerveceria La Tropical was established in Havana , Cuba on the banks of the Almendares River. The brewery (“cerveceria” means brewery in Spanish) grew dramatically and by 1958 it supplied over 60% of all the beer produced in Cuba .
La Tropical was a must-visit destination with gardens, restaurants, dancing and, of course, beer. The future was bright. In 1959 the Cuban Revolution expropriated the brewery and the owners emigrated to Miami.
Over the next decades original family descendants fought to secure rights to the La Tropical brand and in 2021 La Tropical opened in Miami in the trendy Wynwood Arts District.
Cerveceria La Tropical offers a wide range of beers including the original from pre-revolutionary Cuba. How cool is THAT? Other selections include “Nativo Key” a refreshing IPA, and the high-octane double IPA appropriately named “Gasolina.”
The beautiful, tropical themed, full-service restaurant serves tapas to main courses, all with a nod to the brewery’s Cuban roots; black bean hummus, lager steamed mussels and citrus braised pork, just to mention a few delectable dishes. One mind-blowing take on a Cuban classic is a Cuban sandwich transformed into an empanada.
The desserts are, as they say, to die for. The individual dessert selections include some Cuban classics like coconut flan and flavored banana fritters, but the sampler, consisting of 4 small dessert selections is the star; think passion fruit and dark chocolate!
Set in Wynwood, one of Miami’s most interesting and artsy neighborhoods , La Tropical is a brewery destination with history and amazing food and drink. The décor is airy, artistically designed and tropical-themed with a stage for live music events. A must stop on any U.S. brewery road trip and one of the best things to do in Miami.
Where to stay in Miami
Tampa Bay Brewing Company
Tampa Bay Brewing Company’s tag line is Beer is your friend. OK. I’ll drink to that.
This Brewery/restaurant is in the iconic Centro Ybor, in the center of Tampa’s Ybor City. Here is a welcoming, cozy, neighborhood-type establishment with quality bar food and an excellent selection of beers.
The menu is varied: starters, pizza, burgers and satisfying entrees. But, really, it’s all about the beer. They brew lots of hop-centric IPAs and other premium craft beers on a constantly rotating basis so you can always have a new beer every time you visit. Some of the beer names are…creative, Old Elephant Foot and Reef Donkey.
TBBC is one of the areas oldest breweries. They have been family owned since 1995 and opened a branch in 2014 in Westchase. They have live music on Fridays and an outdoor patio.
If you visit the Tampa area, you have to visit Ybor City, especially Centro Ybor. While there, don’t miss a stop at the Tampa Bay Brewing Company.
Mid West Brewery Road Trip
Ellicottville Brewing Company – Ellicottville New York
So maybe it not EXACTLY in the Midwest, but it is closer to Ohio and western Pennsylvania than it is to the east coast and is a better fit for the Mid West Brewery Road Trip.
Just a few miles north of Allegheny State Park , Ellicottville is a small village in western New York known for its ski slopes and called the Aspen of the East. Founded in 1820, the town has artsy shops and some really good dining options serving classic Americana fare; think bison burgers, ribs and mac and cheese. It is also home to one of the top breweries in the area, The Ellicottville Brewing Company or EBC.
EBC has wide and interesting collections of brews from lagers and ales to porters and stouts and everything in between. The season selections are fun to try as are the popular releases with quirky names like Pumpkinville Latte Nitro Ale and Pineapple Upside Down Shake IPA.
A walk through the bar, indoor restaurant and brewery brings you to the outdoor German Beer Garden where you can create your perfect evening dining, tasting the beer samples and deciding which one is your favorite.
Talek blogs at Travels with Talek
4 By 4 Brewing Company – Springfield, Missouri
4 By 4 Brewing Company is hands-down my favorite brewery — and my favorite stop on our craft beer breweries road trip. This laid-back brewery is the perfect place to just grab a beer and spend time with your friends, family, or strike up a conversation with the bartender – it’s likely you’ll be talking to one owners. They’re always brewing up something special and unique, but my personal favorite is their Java the Kolsch. This coffee kolsch is incredibly flavorful, but light enough you’ll need at least one more. In addition to their exceptional brews, they have a wall of games, free popcorn and a Beer-it-4ward-Wall. Any patron can buy a beer for someone, then they put their name on the board. Normally it’s $5 for a beer, but if they will take a picture and tag the person and 4 By 4 Brewing to any social media, it will only be $4 at the time. How cool is that?
Paige Wunder blogs at For the Love of Wanderlust .
Badger State Brewery – Green Bay, Wisconsin
Our brewery road trip now heads north. If there’s anything the people of Green Bay, Wisconsin love more than the Green Bay Packers, it’s beer. A few years ago, a Green Bay local decided to take his love for craft brew and create what today is known as Badger State Brewery. Badger State offers an extensive list of creative, Wisconsin themed beers like “On Wisconsin Red Ale” and “Buzzy Badger Coffee Ale”, along with 24 local Wisconsin beers on tap.
But the beer at Badger State is just the icing on the cake. With a beer garden, taproom, and Barrel Haus event hall, Badger State is a venue for multiple events throughout the year. You can find larger, seasonal events like “Firkins in Fall” to smaller, mid-week activities like “Oysters and Beer Pairings” and “Yoga and Beer.” Pay a visit to Badger State Brewery and you get a taste of Wisconsin in every sense: community, fun, and really, really good tasting beer.
Great Lakes Brewing Company – Cleveland, Ohio
The next stop on our brewery road trip is one of the best craft beer breweries in the U.S., located in Cleveland, Ohio . Great Lakes Brewery in Cleveland not only serves up tasty craft brews, but each of the cleverly named beers and logo designs have a connection to the history in either Cleveland or the Great Lakes. You can find the beer in stores all across the country but actually going to the brewery in Cleveland is an experience of its own.
One of their brews is named after Eliot Ness, a famous prohibition officer who took down Al Capone in Chicago and later came to Cleveland. The actual bar in the Great Lakes Brewery has a real bullet hole in the wall by none other than Eliot Ness himself, a bartender will point it out during your visit.
Dining here is also a treat, all the food is farm to table, sourced from farms within 10 miles away. Great Lakes Brewery prides itself on its low waste solutions by sending all their restaurant scraps to compost. Ohio’s first microbrew is seriously cool inside and out.

Pacific Coast Brewery Road Trip
Pike Brewing – Seattle, Washington
Head to the Pacific Northwest to the next stop on our brewery road trip. The third microbrewery in Seattle, Pike Place Brewery, was founded by a beer-loving couple, Charles and Rose Ann Finkel in 1989. The name was inspired by the famous market in historic downtown Seattle which is also the location of this successful brewery. Today it is known as simply Pike Brewing but there is nothing simple about this iconic establishment. Over the years the Pike has grown to a 30-barrel brewhouse brewing 12,500 barrels of craft beer annually.
You can experience Pike Brewing through a brewery tour, the large, family-friendly Pike Pub, and the newest addition, the Tankard and Tun Restaurant. They even have a Microbrewery Museum where you can explore the history of beer and browse an impressive collection of beer art and memorabilia all with a pint in hand. Be sure to try some of the year-round favorites like Pike Space Needle IPA and Pike Kilt Lifter Scotch-style Ale. Depending on the time of year you can also get a taste of delicious seasonals like Pike Auld Acquaintance Holiday Ale and Pike Seafair Summer Ale.
Sarah Hughes blogs at Discover the Pacific Northwest
Top Rung Brewery – Lacey, Washington
Our brewery road trip starts at Top Rung Brewery in Lacey, Washington started as a dream for two firefighters. Friends and coworkers, they wanted an escape from their busy jobs and started brewing beers at home. Their love for beer finally turned into a real brewery in 2014. Top Rung is a 10 barrel craft beer brewery with a tasting room.
The owners both still work as firefighters and also work at the brewery. Top Rung partners with local food vendors and food carts and they also allow guests to bring food in. Top Rung has finally brought great craft beer to the South Sound area.
Tarah and Tip blog at FitTwoTravel .
Deschutes Brewery – Bend, Oregon
Founded in 1988, and the third stop on our brewery road trip, Deschutes Brewery (pronounced “duh – shoots”) makes some of my favorite craft beer in the United States. They grew from what was once just a brew pub in Bend, Oregon, into the 8th largest brewery in the U.S., with a brewery in Bend, a brew pub in Portland, and a new location on the East Coast in Virginia.
In Oregon, everyone knows Deschutes, and it’s quickly becoming available throughout the U.S. They brew 8 year-round beers, plus a handful of special reserves and seasonals, like my favorite Jubelale, which is a bold, complex winter ale.
A special feature of Deschutes is the way they name their beers after local landmarks, like Black Butte Porter. Deschutes itself is named after a river, a county and a National Park in Oregon. Black Butte (pronounced beaut) is a popular hiking spot in the national park. If you like whisky, Deschutes now makes a Black Butte whisky from this popular beer.
We typically visit the brew pub, so we can sit down for a beer and food pairing. Both locations have a Pacific Northwest feel and enjoyable atmosphere. They are always completely packed, as a testament to their popularity. At the Bend tasting room, they offer regular tours throughout the week. In an industry that often ends up being owned by conglomerates and big business, Deschutes stands firm as a 100% family- and employee-owned company.

Russian River Brewing Company – Santa Rosa, California
Our brewery road trip now takes us to Wine Country! Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, California is one of the most important craft beer breweries in the history of craft beer. The brewery was opened in 1997 by Vinnie Cilurzo, who was the brewer who first created the now-ubiquitous double IPA. Russian River is now famous for both their strong IPAs as well as their Belgian-style & barrel-aged beers. The famous Pliny the Elder is a double IPA that has always been rated as one of best beers in the world. It will always be a classic, no matter what new beers are released elsewhere.
The city of Santa Rosa hosts the annual release of Pliny the Younger, Russian River’s triple IPA. For two weeks each February, beer fans from all over the world line up for a chance to try the rare beer. If waiting in a line like that isn’t of interest to you, Russian River still has great beer & food all year long. Most importantly, Russian River is a pillar of the community in Santa Rosa. Following the tragic fires in the area, Russian River organized a fundraiser called “Sonoma Pride” that generated over $1 million to help the local community.
The Ultimate Island Brewery Road Trip
Kona Brewing Company – Hawaii
The next stop on our brewery road trip is in Hawaii. Kona Brewing Company was started in spring 1994 by a father and son team, followed by a pub in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. Kona’s year-round beers include Big Wave Golden Ale, Longboard Island Lager and Fire Rock Pale Ale. All three are very popular on the islands of Hawaii. Additionally, Kona Brewing Company has three rotating seasonal brews in their Aloha Series including Koko Brown, Wailua Wheat and Pipeline Porter.
Kona Brewing Company distributes its beers in 36 states and 10 different countries, which is an amazing, given the fact that they brew on Big Island. Design of the bottles is especially young and modern. Also, a tour of the brewery in Kailua-Kona is good fun. It takes about one hour and can be topped by a meal in their own pub. A nice additional fact is that Kona Brewing Company supports some community events on the islands, including surf and events and more.

A Dozen Plus Reasons to Travel with Bon Beer Voyage
Our mission at bon beer voyage is simple:, to be the best beer tour company and offer the best beer tours.
We already think we do this, but don’t take our word for it- read on, then decide for yourself:
- Beer Aficionados & Industry Insiders, such as Beer Advocate Founders, Jason & Todd Alstrom, Bob Sylvester, Brewmaster for Saint Somewhere Brewing and Bill McFee and the crew from Barrel of Monks Brewing chose us for their European Beercations.
- British Airways Opportunity Grant Winner – that’s right, one of the top airline companies in the world loved our beer tour business concept so much that they chose to support us in researching and improving our beer tours allowing us to bring you the best in handpicked destinations, accommodations and experiences.
- Two Time Winner of the World Food Trekking Award in 2017 & 2018 for Best Food/Beverage Tour Operations on Water by the World Food Travel Association our beercation cruises not only bring you the best in brewery visits and beer culture, but our dedication to providing top notch experiences, cuisine and of course beer, are what we are known for.
- Our Beer Trips are Run by Licensed, Certified, Accredited & Experienced Tourism Professionals – Sure, we know our beer, but what sets us apart from other beer tour companies is that we also know travel and tourism. Long before we decided to run beer tours we were planning and hosting group travel. We have guided groups for some of the top names in the tour industry, i.e. E.F. Smithsonian & Road Scholars. We are certified & licensed to run tours, registered to sell travel and have passed the requirements necessary to be insured by one of the top insurance companies in the industry. We are also IATAN Accredited Travel agents. Why is this important? We are not just some beer lovers who said “hey, come on vacation with us!” (Although many of our guests enjoy the fact that we do get to spend time with them!) We are professionals whose goal is to be able to provide you with the best beer tours out there- which means your safety and enjoyment are top priorities for us.
- Our Beer Tours are Very Inclusive – The price you pay for your beer tour covers just about everything -meals, brewery tours and tastings, guides & transportation during the tour, as well as accommodations. If there is something that is not included we let you know, i.e. we may leave one night open for you to try a local restaurant on your own or with new friends from the group.
- Our Beer Trips Offer One of a Kind Experiences – visiting Trappist Breweries like La Trappe or Westmalle is on the bucket list of many beer enthusiasts, experiences like getting to join in on a service with the monks of Westvleteren is what makes a once in a lifetime memory. Whether we are touring & tasting in an award winning brewery with the brewer him/herself or going behind the scenes to see how chocolate is made and then tasting how it interplays with the perfect craft beer on your taste buds, we’ll always go the extra mile to make sure your beer vacation goes way beyond the ordinary. Let’s face it, you want to get the most out of your beer trip , and our goal is to provide the best beer tour out there. Our years in the industry have allowed us to make connections in all the right places and with all the right people to make this one beer tour that you’ll be talking about for years to come!
- Gourmet Meals are a Highlight on our Beer Tours … we are foodies as well as beer lovers , like many of you, so we’re sure you’ll find the food on our beer tours tends to be one of the many unexpected highlights of your trip. On our barge tours we have our own private chef on board and our guests usually tell us it’s love at first bite! On land, we research the best restaurants in the area and work with the chefs to create incredible beer paired menus especially for guests on our beer trips.
- Satisfied Guest= Repeat Guests- Our guests tell us we run the best beer trips out there, and we guess they must really feel this way since we have had repeat passengers on every single trip we’ve run since the first. Our repeat business continues to grow over time. This is the best compliment our guests can give us!
- Our Small Group Size Allows Us Better Access to Breweries & Elsewhere … Our policy of smaller group size allows us to get the inside scoop just about anywhere we visit, even in a small brewery where other groups could not get around. It allows a more personal experience, giving our guests ample chance to chat with the host for each event, whether it is a brewer, local guide or artisanal cheese maker; our small group size makes your visit as up front and personal as you’d like.
- It’s Personal – Since we personally do all the research and development for our beer trips and tours, we not only taste beers and check out food and beer pairings; we travel to meet our barge captains, visit our hotels, test out our tour guides and have the pleasure of getting to know many of the brewers and owners of the pubs we visit personally. For us, this is the best part of what we do- the people. To walk into a pub on the other side of the ocean and feel as at home as if you are in your local haunt is a privilege. And to share this with our new friends (our first-timer guests) and old friends (repeat guests) well, it pretty much doesn’t get any better than that.
- Beer School Instructors – We not only Talk Beer, We Teach Beer! Two things we love talking about are beer and travel. So in between our tours, you can often find us running public beer tasting classes for companies such as World of Beer, talking about traveling to Belgium at a tasting of Belgian Beers at Total Wine, speaking to private groups like the Alliance Francophone of the Palm Beaches about topics such as the Beers of Belgium or hosting a beer tasting fundraiser for charities such as the American Cancer Society.
- Travel with Like-Minded Beer Enthusiasts- Your fellow beercationers are like you—enthusiastic travelers with a passion for great beer. People come on our tours for the beer, and return again and again for the people and the beer. After sharing the great beers and the type of once-in-a-lifetime experiences that we are known for , its no surprise that lasting friendships are some of the best souvenirs our guests take home (well, along with the beer!)
- One Stop Travel Planning- In addition to being beer tour operators, we also are IATAN Accredited Travel agents and can help you plan your trip from beginning to end including flights, pre and post hotel stays and more. Once on tour with us, you’ll find we provide everything you’ll need to make the most of your beer trip from detailed pub crawl maps to instructions on how to best pack your souvenirs(beer) for the journey home! Just ask- we’re happy to help.
- No Worries About Drinking and Driving- With our overnight packages there is never a need to find a designated driver.
Of course we gave you more than a bakers dozen! We like to offer additional value!

Craft Beer Tasting
Craft Beer Tasting on the River
Why does beer taste so good after a day of whitewater rafting? That’s a deep question…or not. In any case, we think you’ll agree that after an active day of adventure, sipping an ice cold microbrew next to a rushing river is about as good as it gets.
OARS Craft Beer Tasting trips are the beer lovers’ alternative to our regular departures. After each action-packed day on the water, kick back in camp with friends, maybe try your hand at a round of Bottle Bash and crack open a few cold ones from our longtime partners at Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Payette Brewing or 21st Amendment Brewery.
In addition to a nightly selection of craft-brewed lagers and ales provided by some of the best brewers in the West, enjoy the elevated catered camping experience you can expect on every OARS adventure. Cheers to that!

Everything was exceptional – I honestly think that it could not have been any better. Enjoying an exceptional meal, with a world-class beer, with a professional crew of staff at a place only accessible by raft. I feel restricted by not being able to rate [the trip] any higher than excellent. For me, the trip was nothing short of perfection. Portland, Oregon
Asheville, north carolina.
Although there are more than 100 breweries and brewpubs across the state, Asheville is the epicenter with the most breweries per capita, earning it the title of “Beer City, USA” four times in a row. As such, beercation options abound. You can start by following the Asheville Ale Trail , which provides options by car, bike or on foot. Wicked Weed Brewing is a favorite for its hoppy ales and barrel-aged sour beers. Visit its Funkatorium location, a barrel house and tasting room all in one.
Download the Dig Local app for the city’s latest beer happenings, or let an organized tour, whether the original Brews Cruise or small group Asheville Brewery Tours , do the work for you. Depending on the time of year, try to include the long-running Brewgrass Festival for live music alongside favorite local brewers, or the Winter Warmer Beer Fest to partake in some of the best breweries from around the state.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Denver, colorado, san diego, california, chicago, illinois, seattle, washington, portland, maine, brooklyn, new york.
Believe it or not, Brooklyn was once one of the country’s top beer producers at the turn of the 20th century. As with the rest of the country, Prohibition was one of the major factors behind the industry’s decline. Brooklyn Brewery heralded the industry’s resurgence when it opened in 1996, and today its beers, including the popular Brooklyn Lager, can be found nationwide and abroad. Venture to hipster-haven Williamsburg for a free tour and tasting. Other breweries that you can visit include Threes Brewing , which consists of an on-site brewery and a full bar with 20 taps. Recent newcomer Other Half specializes in IPAs and gives appointment-only tours. Tørst has become a destination for craft beer imbibers; across the river in Manhattan, Blind Tiger Ale House , one of the city’s best craft beer bars, serves a curated tap selection that includes renowned Brewery Ommegang from upstate New York.
For guidance, Urban Oyster offers craft beer walking tours and craft beer crawls. True beer lovers shouldn’t miss the annual NYC Beer Week , a 10-day event celebrating local beer with everything from trivia nights to secret events.

That stretch of time from late spring into autumn is the best time to pack up the car and hit the road to explore the vast and beautiful place that is the good ol’ US of A. This year, skip the traditional asphalt crawl and turn your travels into ultimate craft beer road trips.
There are a ton of great places in America to find independent beer, so where do you start? We mapped out five routes that connect some of the liveliest beer communities in the country. The trips aren’t meant to be done in a day. Instead, sit back and soak in the scenery that makes each of these beer road trips so memorable.
Let’s break out the map, hit the road (responsibly, of course!) and fill this season with great independent beer.

Road Trip: San Diego to Santa Rosa
If you’re simply flying in and out of this craft beer destination, you’re doing it wrong. Instead, pack up the car and cruise the wildflower-lined Pacific Coast Highway up to the breweries tucked into the lush, green vineyards of wine country. Carve out at least a week for this one. There are so many exceptional breweries to visit and sunsets to see, you’ll want to take your time.

And kill two birds with one stone with a stop at the Port Brewing Co. & Lost Abbey Brewing Joint Tasting Room that features 40+ taps from both breweries. A stop at Stone Brewing Co.’s gorgeous Escondido headquarters and restaurant is a must, because — Stone — and bucket lists.
And don’t forget about the up-and-coming breweries. Before leaving San Diego, be sure to visit Societe Brewing Company . This young brewery is refreshingly true to themselves, and they make some darn tasty barrel-aged beers. And make the most of limited time in the city by heading straight to Ocean Beach where you’ll find a mouth-watering Peanut Butter Milk Stout at Belching Beaver Brewery , three giant tasters for $3 at Culture Brewing Company’s tasting room, and a killer rooftop view of the Ocean Beach pier at the Ocean Beach Brewery .
As you make your way north through Los Angeles, veer off the beaten path and head to The Bruery for all of the delicious barrel-aged brews. And a trip up the West Coast wouldn’t be complete without stops at Firestone Walker Brewing Co. and Russian River Brewing Co. Geek out at the mini empire Firestone Walker has created in Paso Robles and load up your car full of Pliny at Russian River .

Road Trip: Portland to Bend
Start with a beer and a burger at Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, the Bridgeport Brewery and Brewpub. Thoughtful beer and food pairings and a top-notch happy hour is what you’ll find at Burnside Brewing Company. At The Commons Brewery , enjoy classic European styles and some of the best mac ’n cheese in town.
For a truly unique Portland experience, pull up a stool at Old Town Pizza & Brewing , the city’s well-known haunted brewpub located just around the corner from the start of many of the city’s ghost tours. When you arrive in Bend, make your first stop the Crux Fermentation Project . This family-friendly joint has an excellent outdoor patio with delicious food trucks, but people are flocking to this place for the clean, flavorful, interesting beers coming out of the brewery.
A stop in Bend wouldn’t be complete without checking out Deschutes Brewery’s beautiful production facility. Road Trip: Nashville to Asheville
Nashville’s beer scene has grown leaps and bounds in the last decade, and is now home to a large selection of excellent breweries worthy of seeking out during your travels. For a delicious meal and a pint, head to Tennessee Brew Works , located just outside of Nashville’s vibrant downtown area. For a visit to one of the most happening taprooms in the city, make your way to Jackalope Brewing Company . Marvel at the amount of clean and flavorful brews made in Czann’s Brewing Company’s small brewery and cozy taproom. For an excellent brewery tour (with complimentary tasters!) and the scoop on Nashville’s craft beer history, head to Yazoo Brewing Co.
While traversing the southern heat on your way to Asheville, be sure spend a day exploring Chattanooga. Stops at Big Frog Brewing Co. , Big River Grille & Brewing Works and the Chattanooga Brewing Co. are a must.
Once you arrive in Asheville, head to the Asheville Brewing Company where you can catch a movie and grab beer and pizza, too. Post up on the outdoor patio at Burial Beer Company for refreshing Honey Saison. Try a Gaelic Ale, a Daycation IPA or a Black Mocha Stout at Highland Brewing Co. , and don’t miss out on the funky goodness at longtime Asheville watering hole — Green Man Brewery (Green Man’s new building is stunningly gorgeous, with a great view – particularly in the fall.) And if you’re looking for more great views, make the 15 minutes drive from downtown to Pisgah Brewing , a brewery that doubles as a music venue, attracting up-and-coming acts and big names alike.
Perfectly positioned along your route is Blackberry Farms in Walland, Tennessee. Book a night in one of the farm’s charming cottages and finally taste what all of the buzz is about at this boutique brewery.
Road Trip: New York City to Burlington, VT
To truly begin an epic road trip in NYC, head to Brooklyn Brewery . This legendary brewery offers Small Batch Tours for an all-access guided tasting of four Brooklyn Brewery beers. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the brewery’s “Before You Visit” instructions to stay-up-to-date on the tasting room’s limited hours throughout the week, and guidelines for touring this popular NYC craft brewery.
Continue exploring Brooklyn with a stop at the Keg & Lantern Brewing Co. where you’ll find a long list of a variety of ales and lagers on draft, and a visit to Other Half Brewing Company —a hop-forward brewery revered for creative and exciting beers and brewery collaborations. Pull up one of the many bar stools at Threes Brewing for a classic German lager or a traditional Belgian farmhouse ale before traveling back over the bridge to the Chelsea Craft Brewing Company —the oldest brewery in Manhattan.

Tradition and a focus on local ingredients is what you’ll find at the Burlington Beer Company . Enjoy a Q-shaped pretzel, cool atmosphere, and tasty beers and Queen City Brewery , and sunshine and unfiltered ales and lagers on the patio at The Tap Room at Switchback Brewing Company . This community-driven place is offering up weekly specialty bottle releases that you’ll definitely want to plan your visit around.

Plan your end-of-summer road trip: The 10 best beer cities to visit
Finish summer strong by visiting one of these 10 beer cities.
Sure, it’s great to spend time at home during the summer (and early fall) months. This is especially true if you have a nice back deck, patio, or pool (or all of the above) and a well-manicured lawn to play cornhole, ladder ball, or croquet. But, while it’s fun to be home on warm, sunny days, we believe summer deserves at least a few road trips. And while a day trip to a regional amusement park or to a state forest for a hike is great , we’d rather hop in our car and have the trip end with some liquid refreshment instead of nausea-inducing spinning teacups. Specifically, lagers, IPAs, and other thirst-quenching beers .
Grand Rapids
Philadelphia, portland, oregon, los angeles.
If you’re a beer fan and anything like us, you’ll want to take a day trip or vacation to a city that is chocked full of breweries, brewpubs, and other places to drink frosty brews. Luckily, since the U.S. is loaded with beer bars, brewpubs, and over 9,000 breweries, there are quite a few towns and cities well-worth hopping in your car and visiting.
We understand that figuring out where to take that road trip (or flight) is no easy task. There are seemingly countless cities with booming beer scenes. Lucky for you, we did the leg work (beer drinking), so you didn’t have to. We dwindled this massive number down to the ten best beer cities to visit this summer. Keep scrolling to see them all. Summer won’t be here for long. Get your beer-centric road trip plans set as soon as possible.
Boston is a historic city. If you visit this summer, you can walk along Paul Revere’s Freedom Trail, stop into Faneuil Hall Marketplace, or take in a Red Sox game at iconic Fenway Park. You can also drink a lot of beer thanks to the city’s many beer halls, beer bars, and breweries like Night Shift , Trillium , Aeronaut , Notch , and Lamplighter .
If you’re an IPA fan (especially West Coast IPAs), you’re going to want to take a trip to San Diego. Not only does it appear to always be warm and sunny there, but you can mix in days at the beach or an afternoon at a Padres game with trips to local beer bars, brewpubs, and beloved breweries like Societe , North Park , AleSmith , Fall , and Pure Brewing Project .
If you’ve ever seen the TV commercials, you probably already know that Michigan is a summer vacation destination. What you might not have known is that after you spent some time kayaking in Lake Michigan and visiting Mackinac Island, you’re going to want to take a trip to Grand Rapids. This city of less than 200,000 people is home to more than forty breweries. This includes standouts such as The Mitten , Brewery Vivant , City Built , and the wildly popular Founders Brewing Company .
The largest city in Western North Carolina is home to one of the most exciting beer scenes in the country. After you have visited The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, take the drive to Asheville. The city is home to myriad beer bars and brewpubs, as well as over forty breweries. Wicked Weed Funkatorium , Highland , Burial , and Hillman are just a few of the many breweries waiting for a visit.
The “City of Brotherly Love” is home to more than just the Liberty Bell and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia . The city and surrounding area are also home to more than 115 breweries (yes, you read that right). No stop in Philadelphia is complete with trips to Brewery ARS , Crime & Punishment , Human Robot , Triple Bottom , or Yards Brewing for a burger and a flight of beer.
It’s a toss-up between the two Portlands as to which one is the better beer town. While you can’t go wrong with Maine for its ‘Vacationland’ vibe, we tend to believe Portland, Oregon, has a slight advantage when it comes to beer. Can’t-miss breweries include Breakside , Great Notion , Ruse , Wayfinder , and Ex Novo .
You might think of Florida as only a place to travel if you’re going to an amusement park either featuring a boy wizard or a cartoon mouse. But after you visit these destinations, take a trip to Tampa and check out the beer scene. While Cigar City and its range of highly-rated beers is a big draw, the coastal city is also home to Coppertail , Zydeco , 7venth Sun , Angry Chair , and the popular Tampa Bay Brewing Company .
Travelers to Los Angeles might be there for the beaches, sun, and potential of running into a celebrity or two. But they’d be remiss if they didn’t seek out the beer as well. On top of all of the amazing restaurants and beer bars, the “City of Angels” and the surrounding area is home to Monkish , Highland Park , Homage , Golden Road , and Angel City Brewing .
Chicago is another city that’s a great summer road trip destination. The second city is home to two baseball teams, great museums, restaurants, iconic foods like the “Chicago-Style” hotdog, Italian beef, deep dish pizza, and a ton of great breweries. This includes Revolution , Half Acre , Dovetail , Pilot Project , and Off Color .
When it comes to outdoor adventures, you’ll have a tough time beating the appeal of Colorado on a summer or early fall day. But after an afternoon of hiking or mountain biking, you’ll likely want a respite from the heat. We suggest visiting one of Denver’s many beer bars and brewpubs or one of its many great breweries. This includes Wynkoop . Great Divide , TRVE , Call To Arms , and Crooked Stave .

The data on New Year's resolutions aren't the best. Recent data shows that most people give up before the calendar flips to February. However, perhaps you've vowed to be the outlier this year, specifically with weight loss and healthy eating. Diet and weight loss remain top resolutions manually, but change is hard. A strategy, like a meal plan, can help, but developing one can feel overwhelming. Consider a food planner to lose weight. No, you don't have to buy a physical planner. Instead, meal plan apps allow you to hold the tool that can help you achieve your eating and weight loss goals in the palm of your hand.
Various healthy food planner phone apps offer different interfaces, bells and whistles, and price points. Most are more than mere calorie apps. Instead, you'll find ways to track your progress and plot out meals to ensure you're getting the calories and nutrients you need to thrive.
Whether it’s for health reasons, a change of pace, or you tied one on a little too tightly during the holiday season, there’s a chance you’ve decided to join countless others for Dry January. For those unaware, this means this month will be spent without imbibing any alcohol. This means no cocktails, no wine, and absolutely no beer. Well, no beer with alcohol in it, at least.
Dry January doesn’t mean you’ll be completely parched all month because no beer hits your lips. Due to a rise in sober consumers and drinkers who enjoy taking time off from booze, there are countless non-alcoholic beers on the market. Gone are the days of mass-produced, fizzy water NA beers.
We love our festive cocktails and bottles of beautiful reds this time of year. Please give us all the hot toddies and spiked eggnog concoctions. And there's truly nothing like a tall, frosty beer after a long day on the mountain. But when it comes time for that ball to drop on New Year's Eve, the festivities just aren't complete without a glass or two of Champagne. This beautiful bubbly beverage is celebratory in its very essence and, therefore, simply must be enjoyed on the most celebrated night of the year. Unfortunately, though, those bubbles tend to come with a pretty price tag, particularly if one is set on enjoying true Champagne and not another variety of (often more affordable) sparkling wine.
One of the reasons our favorite fizzy drink tends to be a bit pricier is because Champagne can only be classified as such if it comes from the Champagne region in northern France. If your bubbles come from another region - or a different country altogether - it is considered sparkling wine, not Champagne. This region itself is quite small compared to other wine regions, and is made of soil that is infamously difficult to work. Creating a bottle of deliciously pure and bubbly, perfect Champagne is a true labor of love, and that love comes at a cost.
Chug-a-Lug: Seven of the Best Boozy Train Rides in America
words: Cat Wolinski
illustration: Danielle Grinberg
“Drinking on a train is, in every respect, the perfect antidote to our overworked minds,” Bharat Vohra, who blogs about train travels at bratislav.blog , recently told VinePair. “It’s a time to reflect; a time to appreciate the little things, and sometimes, just to savor the very joy of doing nothing at all.”
Whether you call it mindfulness or Slow Travel, train trips are making a comeback , with luxurious rail trails from the Adirondacks to the Rocky Mountains beckoning us to hop onto hassle-free journeys with a glass in hand. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up seven of the best boozy train rides in America where you can relax, unwind, and enjoy a region’s wines, beers, and breathtaking views, no checked baggage necessary.
Napa Valley Wine Train
The Napa Valley Wine Train tops the list of booze-fueled trains for obvious reasons. Operating on a railroad built in 1864 by San Francisco tycoon Samuel Brannan, this ride takes you through one of the world’s most beautiful wine regions, spanning 789 square miles and combining some of the best wines and best views the country has to offer. Watch a video of the experience here .
The Napa Valley Wine Train has a variety of options, each featuring different wineries. There’s even a family-friendly holiday tour, the Santa Train, which takes a journey to the “North Pole.” Tickets vary depending on your excursion. The Gourmet Express Lunch starts at $149.00.
From the famed Napa Valley Wine Train comes the Hop Train , a new offering that promotes the region’s impressive beer heritage. The ride debuted in June with a trio of frothy offerings from Napa Palisades Beer, and the two-hour tour includes beer tastings and bites to eat. Tickets start at $75 per person.
Durango Brew Train in Colorado
You have exactly two chances to ride this luxurious locomotive into the Colorado wilderness. Local craft brewers host guided tastings of their beers on board, and each journey concludes with a party in a forest. This 1920s-era train once hauled gold and silver ore from the San Juan Mountains. Today, its cargo is no less precious. The five-hour-long historic tour pairs beautiful southwestern Colorado mountain views through Cascade Canyon and Animas Valley, accompanied by half-hour tastings with BREW, Steamworks, Ska, Carver, Animas, and Durango Brewing. There’s also beer trivia. Your chances to hop aboard are in September. Tickets start at $109.
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad: Uncorked
This wine train through North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains promises good wine and good company. Your journey begins with a full-service, adults-only ride in the steam engine’s first-class cars, complete with private attendant and dining seating. A guide accompanies the ride and presents each of the four pours with a little bit of history. Fares include cheese tastings, a surf-and-turf meal, and a seasonal dessert, and the GSMR souvenir stemless wine glass is yours to keep. Tickets start at $120 per person.
Cuyahoga Valley Ales on Rails
Located in northeast Ohio, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) is a tourist railway and nonprofit organization that runs through the 33,000-acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
The Ales on Rails tour comprises two hours, five to six beer tastings, and chef-prepared hors d’oeuvres. There are four options for a trip with Ales on Rails: Goose Island Beer, featuring five beer samples, five appetizers, and a souvenir glass; Breckenridge Brewery, which also features five samples, apps, and a glass; BrewDog USA, a Scotland-based brewery that recently opened its first U.S. location in Columbus, Ohio, which features six beer samples, light appetizers, and a souvenir glass; and, finally, Europhiles will enjoy the Germany v. Belgium option, which also features six samples, light appetizers, and a souvenir glass. For wine lovers, CVSR also offers Grape Escape Wine Tasting Excursions, with options spanning Italian wines to autumn reds. Each wine tasting features five different wines and hors d’oeuvres.
Tickets start at $50 for the Goose Island and Breckenridge tours; $65 for the BrewDog and Germany v. Belgium tours; and $60 for the Italian Wines tour.
Adirondack Scenic Railroad Beer and Wine Train
Pairing lush scenery with a drinker’s delights, the Adirondack Scenic Railroad’s beer and wine train departs Utica’s Union Station in upstate New York and heads north through the mountains to Remsen. The nearly three-hour jaunt includes hot appetizers, snacks, and table service for first-class passengers, along with wine by the bottle or glass available for purchase. The other catch: You can’t take the wine with you, so you have to finish it on board. We trust that won’t be a problem.
First-class tickets start at $45, and coach tickets $25.
My Old Kentucky Bourbon Excursions
Liquor lovers meet their match on My Old Kentucky Dinner Train, a tourism train established in 1988. The two-hour Bourbon Excursions sail through the Central Kentucky countryside, offering a four-course meal, master distiller-hosted bourbon tasting, and a rocks glass you get to keep. Tickets start at $110 per person.
