2. Isla Mujeres, Mexico

  • Average rainfall in August: 3-5 inches
  • Average high: 90 °F
  • Where to Stay: La Posada de Chacón
  • What to do in August: Swim with Whale Sharks

best tropical islands to visit in august

Isla Mujeres is a beautiful Caribbean Island just off the coast of Cancun, Mexico . Meaning “Island of Women,” Isla Mujeres is famous for gorgeous turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, great snorkeling, laid-back vibes, ancient Mayan Ruins, and swimming with whale sharks.

The Isla Mujeres whale shark season runs from May 17 to September 17, which makes August the best time to visit for those who want to swim with the whale sharks — the largest fish in the sea.

If this is on your bucket list, you’ll need to  book an Isla Mujeres whale shark tour   to go. The whale shark zone is about 1-1.5 hours off-shore, and you have to get there by boat.

If you don’t want to swim with the whale sharks, you can also do some snorkeling. There are some great reefs just off-shore, as well as the MUSA Underwater Sculpture Park, with about 500 submerged sculptures.

While August is in the rainy season, snorkeling and swimming with whale sharks aren’t weather-dependent, so you can do both even if it’s raining.

Since August is the rainy season, you can expect lower prices at hotels, so you might even be able to find a great deal at some of the best hotels on the island, like Mia Reef All-Inclusive Resort. All this makes Isla Mujeres the second best island to visit in August.

3. Dominican Republic

  • Average high: 89 °F
  • Where to Stay: Natura Cabana in Cabarete
  • What to do in August: Explore Jaragua National Park or take an authentic cultural tour

best tropical islands to visit in august

The Dominican Republic is one of the best islands to travel to in August. Whilst it is the peak of hurricane season, the temperature remains in the top 80s, and the evenings stay warm.

Plus there are only 28mm average rainfall, and it usually only rains in short sharp bursts and often only at night, making it a good choice for this time of year.

In terms of things to do there are plenty, as it is one of the most popular islands in the Caribbean, but if you look hard enough there are still lots of   hidden gems in the Dominican Republic .  From ATV Punta Cana tours to adult-only party cruises, it is more than worth visiting !

For example, you can do a street art tour in the colorful city of Santiago de los Caballeros or see flamingos in the wild at Laguna de Oviedo. But if you really want to go off the beaten track, explore Jaragua National Park near the border with Haiti .

There is a secluded beach called Bahia de las Aguilas which is pretty much only known to locals, so you will likely have the pristine beaches all to yourself!

A great place to stay in Dominican Republic is Natura Cabana in Cabarete, a treetop cabin with all the luxuries including a spa and a private beach.

4. Puerto Rico

  • Average rainfall in August: 5-7 inches
  • Average high: 81 °F
  • Where to Stay: Tropica Beach Hotel
  • What to do in August: Visit El Yunque National Forest

Girl on a rock overlooking an El Yunque National Park Natural Pool

Although hurricane season is in full swing by the Fall season, Puerto Rico is one of the best Caribbean islands in August to go visit because it is the start of the offseason for this enchanted island.

Things like  transportation , hotels, and even excursions will be much cheaper during this time of year. You’ll also find the island to be less crowded with tourists.

Aside from hurricanes, Puerto Rico does receive high average rainfall year-round and August is no exception with an average of 16 days in the capital city of San Juan.

If you feel like venturing out further from the typical tourist destinations in Puerto Rico like San Juan, try visiting Cabo Rojo and Guanica on the southern and western coasts. They tend to see significantly less rainfall in August with an average of 12 days in Cabo Rojo and only an average of 5 days in Guanica.

Regardless of where you visit on the island the best things to do are out in the water or out in nature.

On the eastern coast, the best place to visit is El Yunque National Forest which is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest system . If it’s going to rain, you might as well be in the rainforest! And trust me, there’s nothing more magical than exploring El Yunque in a downpour.

The western coast is the most beautiful and one of the best places to visit here is La Parguera Nature Reserve.

  • What to do in August: Carnival of Havana

Best caribbean islands to visit in August view of Cuban building and colorful, old-school cars

August – in particular the first half of August, is a great time to visit Cuba! It is just before the months of September and October when hurricanes and tropical storms tend to occur on the eastern side of the island. But, visiting this Caribbean island in October also brings its positives.

Even though afternoons in August may have the odd shower, Cuba sees some very sunny days in August!

Visiting Cuba in August means you will get to experience the Carnival of Havana – an unmissable traditional Cuban festival! Thousands of people join the street parade and join in the dancing.

August is also when the International Festival of Cuban Rumba is held, which is a must for anyone interested in Cuban music, culture, and dance! Of course, you’ll need to visit the  salsa clubs in Havana  in the evenings to show off the moves you picked up!

While there are many hotels in Cuba, staying in a Casa Particular is advisable. Casa Particulars are Cuban homestays and are plentiful across Cuba.

You have the opportunity to gain real insight into the Cuban lifestyle when staying with a local! It’s the best way to fully immerse yourself in Cuba’s fascinating culture!

Ocean and mountain view from boat deck in St John one of the best Caribbean island to visit in August

Visiting St Thomas and St John is the perfect vacation because you get two islands in one! There are so many things to do, from scuba diving to sailing around the islands. On St Thomas, you can visit iconic attractions such as 99 Steps to Blackbeard’s Castle or kayaking and snorkeling in Cas Cay.

7. St Croix, USVI

  • Average rainfall in August: 5-8 inches
  • Where to Stay: Buccaneer Beach and Golf Resort
  • What to do in August: Buck Island Reef National Park Tour

best tropical islands to visit in august

Shockingly, I’ve only been to St Croix in August. And, as you probably know, is peak rainy season! However, I only saw the rain on the way to and from the airport.

In August, you’ll see quick rain showers in the afternoon. Sometimes they’re nice just to cool down the humid summer days!

St Croix is the largest US Virgin Island territory. Buck Island Reef National is off the coast. You can’t visit without taking a tour to the island (which is the only way to get there, since it’s all protected land!).

If you do happen upon a rainy day, you can explore the historic sites or shops in the two main cities, Christiansted and Frederiksted. There’s no much to do for singles, couples, families, and groups! Rain or shine, it’s safe to visit St Croix in August.

8. Antigua and Barbuda

  • Average rainfall in August: 4 inches
  • Average high: 87 °F
  • Where to Stay: Hermitage Bay   or  Dickenson Bay Beach

Antigua and Barbuda is one of the prettiest Caribbean destinations that you must visit once in your life.

Just like for any other Caribbean Islands, August falls in the wet season, because the chances of rain and hurricane are pretty high at this time of the year.

However, if you look at the stats the average rainfall during August in Antigua and Barbuda is only 3.7 inches, with a 30% probability of rain.

Considering the bright side of traveling in August to Antigua , I would take my chances.  In fact, in August you will find lower prices, fewer crowds in Antigua, and still a lot of sunny days and blue skies. This is also the month of the Antigua Carnival when you’ll find the island turns into a whole festival of celebration!

Also, the weather changes very quickly during the day so you may experience some passing showers, which local calls liquid sunshine, but still a lot of sun time. So I wouldn’t change my beach plans if you wake up with rain, as it may pass in half an hour.

Also, the water temperature is nicely warm, making it an excellent time for snorkeling tours and sailing trips around the island.

Antigua is mainly known as a couples´ destination either for honeymoons or couples’ getaways, mainly for its romantic views of the Caribbean sea from ultra-luxury hotels.

If you want to stay in one of them, Hermitage Bay is one of the top properties on the island with a beautiful private beach and private cottages with their plunge pool overlooking the bay.

If your budget is smaller you can opt for one of the lovely apartments at Buccaneer on the spectacular Dickenson bay beach.

A great idea is to rent a car for a couple of days, explore the island, check out the hidden beaches, and take a walk in the charming English Harbour Marina.

  • What to do in August: Tour Bermuda’s famous pastel-colored houses

best tropical islands to visit in august

While Bermuda sits outside of the Caribbean, it’s a perfect island to visit in August for a few reasons. It’s also still part of the CARICOM (Caribbean Community). Bermuda is a beautiful island in the North Atlantic Ocean known for its pink-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and historic sites.

One of the best times to visit Bermuda is in August, as the island has historically low rainfall and is located outside of the traditional hurricane belt. This makes it a great destination for those looking to avoid the potential for bad weather during the summer months.

Bermuda typically receives less than 100 mm of rain in August. This makes it an ideal destination for beach-goers and outdoor enthusiasts looking to escape the summer heat and enjoy the island’s many natural attractions.

There is plenty to do in Bermuda in August, with various outdoor activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving, visiting the many beaches such as Horseshoe Bay, and going to its historical sites such as St. George’s, Unesco World Heritage site.

You can also take a tour of the island to see the famous pastel-colored houses and see the blocal flora and fauna.

Bermuda offers a wide variety of accommodation options to suit all budgets. Definitely consider the Fairmont Southampton Hotel which has fantastic views and even a private beach so you can enjoy your time on the island to the fullest.

10. The San Blas Islands

  • Average rainfall in August: 8 inches
  • Where to Stay: Explora San Blas
  • What to do in August: Take a boat tour through the islands

best tropical islands to visit in august

The San Blas Islands are a group of over 300 islands off the coast of Panama. They are the true definition of paradise! These protected islands are home to the indigenous Guna people. This means these picture-perfect remote islands remain untouched with very little development.

There are a lot of rainy days in San Blas in August, with an average of 6-8 inches. However, there’s plenty of sun throughout the month as well! Plus, The San Blas islands are protected from hurricanes because of their location and proximity to land.

One of the draws of the San Blas islands is that the local population has prevented mass development so don’t expect fancy hotels or resorts here.

Saying that, you can feel truly at one with nature and spend time relaxing and enjoying the environment. Snorkeling, swimming in natural swimming pools, and reading in a hammock are the perfect activities to do in the San Blas Islands.

You cannot visit the San Blas Islands without organizing a tour from either Panama City or a Boat trip to Cartegena in Colombia that has been approved by the Guna People. The whole area is protected so this allows the local population to enjoy their lands and also reap the benefits of tourism.

11. Holbox Island, Mexico

  • Average rainfall in August: 3 inches
  • Average high: 88 °F
  • Where to Stay: Nomade Holbox Resort
  • What to do in August: Swim with whale sharks

Isla Holbox (pronounced hole-bosh) is fast becoming a must-visit in the Mexican Caribbean. It makes for one of the  best day trips from Tulum , Cancun, or Playa del Carmen, as it’s a great place to escape the crowds in these popular towns. Another popular day trip is visiting to Cozumel .

Holbox Island, Mexico is a nature lover’s paradise with miles of white-sand beaches, mangroves to kayak through, bioluminescence in the sea at night, and epic bird-watching — those lucky enough may even see the famous Holbox flamingos.

It is a chill town, perfect for a relaxing visit. Holbox is famous for its hammocks on the beach and in the Caribbean Sea, streets paved in beach sand, no traffic lights, no flashy tourist shops, fresh seafood, street art, and friendly locals.

Though Holbox was once a sleepy fishing village, it has grown in popularity in the last few years. Nowadays, there are accommodations for every budget, so no matter your price range, you’ll find something nice — but if you want to splurge, don’t miss Nomade Holbox Resort.

Holbox is a great Caribbean island to visit in August for one big reason: you can go swimming with whale sharks! These boat tours are only offered from May 17 to September 17 during the whale shark season , and August is known as one of the best months to see them since it’s right in the middle of the season.

12. St Lucia

  • Average rainfall in August: 6-7 inches
  • Where to Stay: St. James’s Club Morgan Bay
  • What to do in August: Land and Sea Tour of St Lucia Attractions and Waterfalls

Saint Lucia is one of the most beautiful and loved Caribbean islands. Whether you are looking for a relaxing getaway or a romantic vacation, the scenic and tranquil waters of the island won’t disappoint you.

You will see mostly glorious sunny days in Saint Lucia during the month of August. Temperatures are an average of 30°C and can drop as low as 24°C. The average rainfall is up to 7 inches and there are very few showers during the day.

Due to the hot and humid climate, you will find good deals on resorts and hotels in Saint Lucia. There are no significant storms that cross the island. Make sure you pack your  summer essentials  accordingly to protect yourself from heat.

There is very little risk of hurricanes in Saint Lucia during any time of the year as it is geographically located very far from the hurricane belt. You can participate in activities like snorkeling, kayaking, and sailing . St Lucia also offers some of the best hiking in the Caribbean.

A St Lucia snorkel tour with land and sea tours is the best way to see the Toraille Waterfalls, twin volcanic peaks of Pitons, Sulphur Springs, and Marigot Bay. Although you want to try to avoid these activities when cruise ships are in port.

The R oots & Soul festival is also a highlight for visitors during the month of August. Stay at St. James’s Club Morgan Bay , an all-inclusive hotel located on the secluded Choc Bay beach on the northern coast of Saint Lucia.

If you’re just searching for beaches, St Lucia isn’t the best choice – try out Turks and Caicos or Grand Cayman instead.

13. Martinique

  • Where to Stay: Hotel Pelican
  • What to do in August: Scuba dive in the warm waters

Martinique is an overseas department of France, and together with Guadeloupe, they are part of the French West Indies – not to be confused with the more northern island St Maarten and St Martin (half dutch/half french island)

In August temperatures are between 28° and 30°. On the climate side, the days are characterized by frequent precipitations (average rainfall is 227 mm), as in most of the Caribbean regions. But the island is mostly protected from hurricanes and violent storms.

It’s true that sunny days are rarer, but August is considered the high season because of school vacations. The ideal temperatures make it one of the best periods to explore, just remember your rain poncho for the long treks!

Another reason to visit Martinique in August? It’s the festival season! From Jazz festivals to Marathons and other sports events, you will find something perfect for you when visiting.

The frequent rains change the landscapes into vibrant green. The vegetation is beautiful and this is one of the best period to visit Jardin Balata and the   Martinique Zoo and Latouche dwelling .

Due to the warmer temperatures of the waters, it’s the best time to go scuba diving in the crystalline waters. There are so many ideal spots although the best is around “ Trois Ilets ” (which translates as Three Small Islands) area.

You might be interested to hear that the vibrant coastal town of Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica’s east coast is a great place to visit in August if you’re searching for Caribbean vibes.

The small boho-casual fishing town of Puerto Viejo has much of its culture stemming from the Caribbean and local indigenous tribes which you can explore during your time there.

You will find superb entertainment like lively reggae bars dotted along the beachfront and guided tours from chocolate plantations and culinary experiences to visiting the indigenous tribe, surfing and jungle trekking.

There are plenty of soft sandy beaches to explore, abundant wildlife , and with the rainforest abutting the coast, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were on an island!

16. Curacao

  • Average rainfall in August: 1-3 inches

Best Caribbean Islands to Visit in August view of Curacao town from the water

Curacao is an amazing tropical paradise located off the coast of Venezuela. Curacao is famous for its white sandy beaches and beautiful hidden bays tucked into coves. The marine life in Curacao is impressive, with a snorkel you can encounter sea turtles, parrot fishes, and many more interesting tropical fish.

Not only the marine life but also the culture of Curacao is amazingly diverse. Because of its history, there are Spanish, Dutch, British, and South American influences all over the island.

These influences are responsible for the great diversity in food, languages and backgrounds of people found on the island.  The colorful capital city Willemstad is the cultural, vibrant center of activity on the island.

August is the perfect time to visit Curacao. While the climate on the island is sunny and warm year-round, there are only about 9 rainy days in August.

Curacao is located outside the hurricane belt, so there is no extreme weather, weather you visit in August or January . Rainy days usually consist of an hour of rain per day, with lots of sunshine for the rest.

If you are looking for a nice place to stay in Curacao, I can recommend Sandals Resort in Santa Barbara Beach. If you wish for a more quiet and relaxed accommodation, I can recommend renting a house in the Lagun Ocean Resort in Playa Lagun.

You can still have a great getaway if you pick the right destination. Here’s an article to help you choose the best Caribbean island to visit in August — plus the things you can do there besides having a blast at the beach.

Searching for the driest Caribbean island in August? We’re talking 90 degrees and just 1.6 inches of rain. Curaçao is a tropical gem you can enjoy even during the rainy season.

The month of August is part of the shoulder season of the island, which means there wouldn’t be throngs of people. You can enjoy the island’s best beaches and attractions without worrying about touristy prices.

Island Highlights

  • Walk along the vibrant Willemstad : The capital of Curaçao is bursting with colors, courtesy of its Dutch colonial houses. It’s also considered UNESCO World Heritage Site. After scuba diving (this place is also known for its colorful underwater world), you can explore the town on foot and visit its many museums and cafes.
  • Explore the Island’s West Coast: Most tourists will be familiar with Willemstad. If you have a penchant for undiscovered gems,  the West End of Curaçao will be a paradise for you. Contrary to the capital’s zest, this side will usher in tranquility. It will get you close to nature with its quiet beaches and unique, untouched landscapes.
  • Enjoy non-stop music entertainment at North Sea Jazz Fest: Want some great escape from the hustle and bustle of life? Let music send you adrift: Curaçao is home to the three-day North Sea Jazz Fest, which welcomes international stars and homegrown talents alike to its stage. Past performers include Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Alicia Keys.

Any list enumerating contenders for the best Caribbean island to visit in August isn’t really complete without Jamaica. And with several top-rated resorts, such as Sandals Montego Bay , choosing this as your holiday destination isn’t hard.

This best Caribbean island to visit in August gets around four inches of rain for several days, with temperatures remaining moderate in mid- to high-80s. During the month, the local celebrates Independence Day and Emancipation Day. It’s also a great time to discover some tropical fruits you might not have seen all your life, such as jackfruit, breadfruit, sweet sop, and sour sop. If you love lobsters, it’s also the best time to get them.

  • Take a splash on Montego Bay’s beaches: Get tanned skin and dip your toes in the fine sands of Doctor’s Cave Beach. If you want someplace where you can have fun on water slides and go-karting facilities. If you want a change of scenery, the Jamaican city is also popular for its golf spots, including the Cinnamon Hill Golf Club.
  • Surround yourself with nature in Blue Lagoon: Nestled in Port Antonio, Blue Lagoon is a haven for nature lovers and has the most breathtaking views in Jamaica. Its turquoise waters are surrounded by thick greenery and are a great place to swim, snorkel or go rafting.
  • Climb the Dunn’s River Falls: Up from some adventure? Sweat your stress off and spend a good hour climbing the famous natural falls near Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Apart from hiking, this park has popular spots for walking and birdwatching. There’s also a beach at the bottom where you can relax after.

In case you’re planning a vacation in Antigua, you will be in time for their Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday. There could be some international soccer tournaments at this time of the year, too. It is also the season for turtle-watching on the island. Plus, so much more (and did we say hotel rates could be lower?).

  • Swim with stingrays in Stingray City: In case you don’t know it yet, stingrays are incredibly friendly. Want to make your Caribbean trip a bit different? Spend time with them as you swim in the turquoise waters in Stingray City. You can also pet and even feed them!
  • Attend the Carnival : Want to have Caribbean carnival dates during your trip? Visiting in August means you can participate in what is touted as the Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival. Highlighted by great music and cultural activities, the Carnival runs from the end of July until the first Tuesday of August.
  • See 18th-Century Architecture in Nelson’s Dockyard: One way to immerse yourself in a foreign place is to look at its architecture. In Antigua, you can do just that when you visit Nelson’s Dockyard, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Apart from 18th-century architectural wonders, you can explore its gorgeous harbor or drink the night away with Caribbean rum.

#4 St. Thomas

St. Thomas is the chief island in the US Virgin Islands. It’s a top Caribbean holiday in August because of the low amount of rainfall and many enjoyable activities to include in your itinerary. It’s the hottest time of the year in this corner of the Caribbean, with the average temperature hitting as high as 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Given the ideal weather, you can pretty much do whatever you desire on the islands during your vacation.

  • Go snorkeling at the Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge: If Stingray City lets you enjoy the waters with stingrays, the Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge is a place to snorkel and get friendly with resident sea turtles at Turtle Cove. However, it’s not just turtles that you can find in its waters. Beautiful coral reefs also surround this 45-acre property. Sailing is another activity you can add to your to-do list.
  • Book a boat tour: Several businesses offer catamaran charter trips and full-day cruises so you can take a good look at this island. You can choose pre-arranged trips or organize a DIY one. If you want to visit the neighboring St. John, opt for a package with that as a stopover.
  • Take a Skyride to Paradise Point: Don’t just enjoy this Caribbean Island from its waters — be in awe of its beauty by going to its top scenic attraction via a Skyride tram. Once there, you can have the best views of Water Island and Puerto Rico , and enjoy good food and drinks served by welcoming locals.

#5 Turks and Caicos Islands

You won’t run out of the best things to do in the Caribbean. Among the hundreds of islands it offers, Turks and Caicos will offer you double the fun and relaxation. While you will be visiting during the hurricane season, these islands get just around 2.6 inches of rainfall and average temperatures at around 82°F.

The archipelago is well-known for its breathtaking barrier reef, the best beaches, conch farm, and more. Here are some of the best things you can do during your Turks and Caicos holiday.

  • Visit the Grand Turk Lighthouse: This lighthouse is a renowned symbol of Turks and Caicos , situated at the peak of Grand Turk, the islands’ capital. After touring this landmark, you can bathe in the surrounding blue waters and go snorkeling or scuba diving.
  • Go to the Turks and Caicos Music and Cultural Festival: Held from late July to early August each year, this festival showcases the musical and cultural marvels of the Caribbean islands. During this week-long festivity, you can find several stalls that offer diverse island foods. Another highlight is a local beauty pageant.
  • Watch scenic sunsets at Grace Bay Beach: Stretching across a good 12 miles, Grace Bay Beach is the personification of pristine. It’s clean and calm and offers a front-row seat to some of the most dramatic sunsets you’ll ever watch.

The choices are endless regarding the best things to do in the Turks and Caicos Islands. It’s up to you whether you’re heading to the Caribbean to relax on its beaches or do every flavor of watersports you have not tried before.

If there’s one piece of advice we want to give you, leave your burdens behind and have the time of your life while in the Caribbean.

Best Places To Travel In August

Planning your summer vacation here are the best places to travel in august..

Best places to travel in August: Cook Islands

The arrival of August means that carefree summer days are almost over, but there's still time for families to sneak in a trip before returning to the redundancy of the everyday routine. And there are plenty of August festivals to visit around the world, so if you need an excuse to visit a new destination, we've got some ideas.

The Cook Islands are a South Pacific paradise, with fewer crowds and cheaper room rates than Tahiti. August is a prime time to visit, as the islands celebrate their independence with a festival filled with traditional song and dance, so your vacation will come with a side of culture.

Food festivals abound in August, offering the chance to indulge on everything from lobster in Maine to chocolate in St. Lucia. Honoring ancestors in Thailand, a sailing regatta in Aruba, the king of all fringe festivals in Scotland, and hula celebrations in Hawaii round out the August offerings. These are some of the best places to travel in August.

The people of the Cook Islands celebrate their independence at the annual Te Maeva Nui Festival , held in Rarotonga. A parade kicks off the festivities, which involves eight teams (four from Rarotonga and four representing the Outer Islands) challenging each other in cultural competitions. The traditional dance and choir performances that take place throughout the week are not to be missed. Plus, postcard-perfect beaches and resorts at half the price of other islands in the South Pacific make the Cook Islands one of the best places to travel in August.

The 2019 Te Maeva Nui Festival takes place from July 26 to August 5.

Best places to travel in August: Oahu, Hawaii

Bring a blanket and picnic lunch to Kapiolani Park (Honolulu's largest public park) to witness the Na Hula Festival . The non-competitive event showcases Hawaii's oldest dance form, with hula students showing off their skills. Watch the graceful movements and appreciate the Hawaiian art form, all while enjoying a family-friendly day at the park.

Hawaii's 78th-annual 2019 Na Hula Festival will take place at Kapiolani Park on August 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Best places to travel in August: Maine

The quaint harbor town of Rockland hosts the five-day Maine Lobster Festival each summer. Nosh on all things lobster, like bisque, rolls and mac and cheese while overlooking Penobscot Bay. Events include a parade, local beer and wine tastings, a seafood cooking contest and a lobster crate race, where contestants run across a series of crates bobbing in the ocean.

This five-day food extravaganza makes Maine one of the best places to visit in August for seafood enthusiasts. The 2019 Maine Lobster Festival starts July 31 and goes until August 4. Tickets are sold at any gate at the festival itself.

Best places to travel in August: St. Lucia

Calling all chocoholics: St. Lucia is one of the best places to visit in August. The island officially declared August as Chocolate Heritage Month in honor of the island's cocoa industry, which dates back to the 18th century. Embrace all things chocolate by taking a tour to learn the ins and outs of how the delicacy is made.

At Boucan by Hotel Chocolat , set on a cocoa plantation, take part in the Tree-to-Bar Experience, where you can harvest cocoa pods straight from the tree and make your own chocolate bar. Anse Chastanet offers a similar experience, with a tour of Emerald Estates' organic farm to see how cocoa is harvested, followed by a visit to the resort's chocolate lab for tastings.

Best places to travel in August: New Zealand

Bring your appetite to New Zealand's largest food festival, Visa Wellington On a Plate , held in the country's capital. During this two-week annual festival, more than 140 of the region's top eateries offer dining deals and limited menus, including an exclusive Festival Dish (patrons vote on a favorite that wins the festival).

Special events include creative cuisine presentations like Dumplings Around the Globe, Umami Origami and Pie and Pinot pairings. A food truck rally and Beervana, a mecca for craft-beer lovers, are also on deck. Be sure to pack a coat: it's the end of New Zealand's winter.

Best places to travel in August: Thailand

The Chinese heritage of Thailand's population is celebrated at the annual Por Tor Festival . Translated as "Hungry Ghost," communities gather to offer food for both their own ancestors and those spirits who no longer have living relatives. The event takes place in Phuket Town at the Seng Tek Bel shrine and on Ranong Road, where revelers parade through the streets dressed in traditional Chinese clothing.

Special offerings are left at ancestor's altars including flowers, candles and food (mainly a red turtle-shaped cake that symbolizes good luck and long life to the person offering the gift).

Por Tor takes place on the first day of the waxing moon in the seventh month of the Chinese calendar, usually landing around late August or early September.

Best places to travel in August: Aruba

Anyone from veteran sailors to novices can race at the Aruba International Regatta . Spectators can watch the action from Surfside Beach, where vessels ranging from yachts to miniature boats compete for bragging rights. The event also includes windsurfing and kitesurfing competitions, and post-race happy hours and beach parties.

The 2019 regatta takes place from August 16 to August 18.

Best places to travel in August: Scotland

Drama nerds and theater geeks, take note: the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the king of all fringe festivals. Artists from nearly 50 countries come to Scotland's capital city to perform in plays, ballets, operas, comedy shows and more. As a visitor, it's easy to get in on the action without a ticket. Just stroll the Royal Mile to watch street performers amid a magical Harry Potter -like backdrop — after all, this is the city that inspired the books.

The 2019 festival starts on August 2 and ends on August 26.

What to do in Bali

  • Hire a scooter and explore the hundreds of temples, paddy fields, beaches, and jungles of Bali.
  • Strengthen your body and soothe your mind with a cocktail of surf and yoga classes.

A family visiting a topical beach bungalow resort in Seychelles

With the softest sand and the warmest ocean, the name alone makes is enough to relax your sense. This dreamy archipelago of 115 islands sits in the middle of the Indian Ocean, far off the East African coast.

You’ve got a lot of options for choosing where to stay in Seychelles . Choose a base on Mahé , Praslin , and La Digue , and spend your days cruising around the smaller, uninhabited islands.

Given the location and just how utterly pristine Seychelles is, it’s a very expensive tropical destination for a vacation – especially during December and January. It’s definitely smarter to visit between May and September when temperatures are the most pleasant, and it rains less.

After all, you don’t want to spend all those dollars to just sit in the rain.

What to Do in Seychelles

  • Book a crazy swanky resort complemented suited only to the grandest tastes.
  • Dine on a diet of fancy cocktails and the finest imported food (or go find some local grub).
  • Sit at the end of your private pier and contemplate the effects of climate change on small island nations .

Small town in Barbados - top topical vacation destination in the Caribbeans

Barbados is an absolute banger Caribbean island! With zesty nightlife, awesome local communities, and a surprising number of botanical gardens and other more sedate activities, there really is something for everyone in Barbados. It is easily one of the best islands to visit in the Caribbean .

Young travellers relish the vibrant festivals that take place throughout the year ranging from musical throwdowns to the harvest season and even a fish festival.

At the same time, families will also have a hoot! Barbados is a very safe destination swimming in family-friendly resorts and villas. It’s a much-beloved island for a tropical vacation in the Caribbean for travellers with a younger brood.

On the eastern side of the island, you’ll find some rad surfing spots. Every beach on Barbados is open to the public, which means you can take your pick from the 80 tropical beaches the island has on offer. The food is delicious and you can always pick between the pricey restaurants and the cheaper hangouts favoured by locals.

If you have the cash, you’ll have no shortage of activities to throw it at, but Barbados is also one of the more affordable islands in the Caribbean. There are so many amazing places to stay in Barbados – you’ll find mid-range hotels and hostels to suit a whole variety of budgets. If you want a truly authentic experience, you could consider staying in a vacation rental in Barbados which is usually someones home that they have rented out.

What to Do in Barbados

  • Swim alongside turtles in the warm, azure water.
  • Gorge on fish fry washed down with plenty of locally distilled Mount Gay.
  • Visit Scotland. That’s right – the region known as Saint Andrews bears a striking resemblance to the architectural landscape of Scotland (just with much, much better weather).

Longboats at a tropical beach in Phuket, Thailand

Thailand’s largest island is the top tropical vacation for a wide mix of traveller styles and budgets. With its idyllic tropical beaches – pearl-white fringed with palms, glittering seas, and a myriad of peaceful temples – what’s not to like? Although, be sure to do your research when choosing where to stay in Phuket .

As a rule of thumb, central Phuket is popular with backpackers and party animals looking for some of Thailand’s best nightlife. Meanwhile, families or couples seeking a romantic escape may prefer the north or south areas. You’ll find no shortage of digs, ranging from budget hostel beds and homestays to whopping resorts and luxury retreats.

As a general tip for the Thai islands – don’t write off the monsoon season (May-October). This means sharing Phuket with fewer tourists and netting cheaper accommodation while you’re at it. But don’t forget your rain jacket! It may not be the most tropical place in the world during this season…

What to Do in Phuket

  • Embrace the full breadth of Thai culture. Experience an acrobatic massage, the vigour of a Muay Thai match, and find zen in a Buddhist temple all in the same day.
  • Eat, eat, and eat some more. Surf on local delicacies at the various night markets dotted around the island or enrol in a Thai cooking class.
  • Find out why you should never ride an elephant at the Phuket Elephant Jungle Sanctuary . At this ethical retreat, you can instead walk alongside the gentle giants.

The Maldives

Luminous sapphire seas, blinding white sand, and flowing all-you-can-eat buffets are trademarks of the Maldives. Of the 1,200 islands that form this tropical paradise, around 100 are used for tourism. The most luxurious resorts straddle an atoll in its entirety, providing a more private (and luxurious) accommodation for visitors.

A top tropical place to visit for affluent explorers, the Maldives is synonymous with honeymooners and loved-up couples with deep pockets. However, a number of the Maldivian resorts are set up to attract families too, with kids’ clubs, water slides, and other fun activities to keep the gremlins occupied. Make sure you check out the target market of any resort so you end up in the right place for your holiday.

You’re more likely to find a Maldivian bargain between June and October – the monsoon season. ‘Bargain’ being relative: take that with a pinch of salt. They’d charge you for farting in the Maldives if they could.

What to Do in the Maldives

  • Blow a year’s salary and rent a bungalow over the water to spend your days gazing at the abundant marine life swimming beneath your feet.
  • Discover all manner of world-class diving and snorkelling; the Maldives is a spectacular destination for a liveaboard trip .
  • Utilise the ferry system to escape the all-inclusive lifestyle and explore neighbouring islands with a more local vibe – the real Maldives.

A beautiful beach in the Perhentians - top tropical island destinations in Malaysia

A short boat ride from the Malaysian coast sits two of the most beautiful tropical islands in Southeast Asia. People come to the Perhenthians for two reasons – to dive or snorkel in the crystal clear water, or to lounge on the beach and do a fat load of nada. Featuring some of Malaysia’s most beautiful tropical beaches , the Perhentians are perfect no matter your preferred travel vibe!

Head to Perhentian Besar for a peaceful escape in a world-class resort with all your creature comforts supplied. This island is popular with families and honeymooners and comprises mid-range to top-tier hotels.

Those of you counting the pennies, follow the rest of the broke backpackers off the boat at the more rustic and (slightly) rowdier Perhentian Kecil . This is actually one of the most affordable places to get your open water diving certificate in the whole of Asia. The diving conditions are mint too, so it’s totally worth it!

What to Do in the Perhenthians

  • Accidentally-on-purpose miss your boat back to the mainland and extend your stay (indefinitely).
  • Don’t even bother asking for Wi-Fi codes on Perhentian Kecil. It won’t work, and you’ve got better things to do.
  • Experience tropical camping on Perhentian Kecil.

best tropical islands to visit in august

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

A tropical lagoon in Palawan, the Philippines

Many say that Palawan is the most beautiful tropical island you’ll find while travelling in the Philippines ; it’s hard not to see why: the beauty of this tropical island paradise slaps you right in the face! (Gently and lovingly.)

Palawan boasts two UNESCO World Heritage sites. Wiggle into your diving gear and explore Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park or hop aboard a canoe for the Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park .

In keeping with the rest of the Philippines, Palawan is a brilliant tropical island for backpackers on a budget. With plenty of hostels and cheap food, you can stretch your money far here. Travellers flock to Palawan, so if you’re travelling solo, you’re guaranteed to make some new travel buddies .

What to Do in Palawan

  • Island-hop around the lagoons and islands of El Nido in the northern stretch of the island.
  • Tickle your tastebuds with Filipino cuisine. Bull’s testicle soup (mysteriously branded Soup Number 5) and boiled duck embryo (balut) are two such delicacies. In fact, the termite of the sea – tamilok – is a Palawan speciality.

Diving with manta rays at Yasawa's famous coral Reefs

Another of those islands formerly seen as a honeymoon destination, Fiji’s appeal has soared over recent decades. It now attracts a mixed bag of solo backpackers and younger explorers as well as the usual tropical vacation crowd. This is in part because Fiji is not that expensive !

As the most developed Pacific Island, it’s also the most popular for family holidays. Made up of more than 300 islands, there is no shortage of awesome places to stay in Fiji . However, you will find most of the tourism across the western islands – particularly Viti Levu and Vanua Levu .

Fiji has something for everyone! There’s diving and snorkelling, sailing and surfing, hiking and whale watching, and, of course, there’s embracing the tropical island lifestyle by swaying in a hammock for days at a time. The temperature remains mostly constant throughout the year, with cyclones occurring between November and January.

What to Do in Fiji

  • Take a break from the beach to slather yourself up in the therapeutic mud baths of Viti Levu.
  • Befriend the friendly locals at a Fijian village. Rather than taking a tour, you can do this independently… as long as you brush up on the customs. Don’t forget to cover up and take a sevusevu (gift) for the turanga ni koro (village chief).

A seal on an exotic beach in the Galapagos Islands

Some 1,000 km from the South American continent, the 19 exotic islands that form the Galapagos are a melting pot of all forms if abundant fauna. With its undisturbed ecosystem and isolated location, wildlife is able to flourish in the Galapagos. Rather than lying still on the beach, a trip to the Galapagos Islands is all about early starts and days trawling the coast for nature sightings.

While the Galapagos used to be exclusively for the wild-loving wealthy, there is more scope for a budget tropical vacation these days. If you have the cash to splash, sure – go ahead and book that liveaboard cruise.

If not, however, you’ll find dorms, guesthouses, and affordable local food. There are cheaper areas in the Galapagos Islands to stay, and then once you’ve got your feet on the ground, you can shop around for tours and excursions.

What to Do in The Galapagos

  • Ponder what the world would look like if we left nature in peace beyond this cluster of beautiful tropical islands.
  • Put down your camera and binge on the extraordinary wildlife you’ll encounter with your own two eyes.

Coconut Crab - indigenous wildlife on the tropical island nation of Niue

Not so much a tropical island, the minuscule island nation of Niue is technically a coral atoll. In fact, it’s one of the largest raised coral atolls on Earth (as well as being one of the most beautiful tropical places on Earth… obvs).

You’ve got rock pools in the north and rainforest in the southwest with secret tropical beaches connecting the two. Oh, and it’s so small you can hike across the length of the island in about five hours!

At present, Niue is only accessible from New Zealand, which does make it trickier to access. It’s most popular with vacationing Kiwis (though not the feathery and cute kind), travellers backpacking in New Zealand , and other South Pacific islanders. But it’s way more chill than its neighbouring South Pacific islands, making it one of the top tropical islands in the vicinity for some R&R.

What to Do on Niue

  • Swing by the Police Station to pick up your Niue driver’s licence – mandatory before you hire a car. Best souvenir ever, right?
  • Experience the underwater world – diving off Niue comes with a visibility of up to 100 metres.

Aether Backpack

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!

A sole female traveller on a beach on tropical Koh ROng

Koh Rong is Cambodia’s answer to Malaysia’s Perhentian Islands. Again, you get to take your pick between two islands to visit both easily accessible for those staying in the Sihanoukville area .

Koh Rong is the more happening of the two with regular raves and parties at Police Beach . It’s not quite on par with Thailand full moon parties, but it’s getting pretty damn close at this point.

Conversely, however, for a quieter tropical escape, head to the sleepier Koh Rong Samloem and nap on untouched tropical beaches in humble bamboo huts. Alternatively, you can just take the 45-minute boat ride between the two islands whenever you’re feeling like a change of pace!

While Koh Rong works out at a lower cost overall, both islands are ideal for budget travellers. They’re mainly frequented by travellers on a circular lap backpacking around Cambodia , and long-term wanderers who still haven’t left.

What to Do in Koh Rong

  • Fill your tummy on the catch of the day at the nightly beach barbecues while local kids dressed in British football shirts run riot.
  • Switch your phone off and embrace the castaway vibe of Koh Rong Samloem – Wi-Fi is in short supply.

Man floating in the aquamarine waters of Raja Ampa - best tropical vacation spot in Indonesia

The Raja Ampat archipelago bobs around in Indonesia’s distant West Papua province. It’s hardly one of the easiest tropical places to vacation due to its remoteness. That being said, if you want to get as off-grid as possible, then Raja Ampat is your dream destination!

Once you reach this faraway cluster of jungle coated islands, you can choose to immerse yourself in snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, and much more.

A number of protected areas have been established in Raja Ampat to maintain the marine environment. That means, on the one hand, unspoiled nature and thriving wildlife. On the other, it does result in Raja Ampat being a costlier choice for those backpacking around Indonesia’s 17,508 islands .

What to Do in Raja Ampat

  • See for yourself what a difference it makes when we protect the natural environment.
  • Get the full Robinson Crusoe experience with a cruise out to some of the deserted islands in the archipelago.

Young boys play on a sunset beach during a tropical holiday in Vanuatu

Of all the tropical places to visit in the South Pacific, Vanuatu ticks a lot of the boxes for your island escape. Vanuatu has managed to steer clear of mass tourism, and accommodation options are more along the lines of independent boutique bungalows and hideaway retreats.

This fiery island has an ample scattering of simmering volcanoes, including a number beneath the water. There’s some of the best wreck diving in the South Pacific off the islands, making Vanuatu a top tropical vacation for adventure junkies.

What to Do in Vanuatu

  • Set yourself the challenge of seeing how many words you can pick up from the 100+ indigenous languages spoken throughout Vanuatu.
  • Duck beneath the palm trees with a platter of brie and a bottle of red wine – a hangover from the time the nation was a French colony.
  • Sip on kava – a natural narcotic drink made from the root of the malok plant.

A town in Koh Lipe, Thailand, with a beautiful tropical beach beyond

If you like the sound of the Maldives but are less enthused by the prices, Thailand has the perfect alternative. Dubbed the Maldives of Thailand for its turquoise bays and alabaster-white sand, you could almost convince yourself you really were sitting in the middle of the Indian Ocean. With no jetty to speak off, arriving on Koh Lipe is an adventure in of itself!

With its romantic beachfront resorts, Koh Lipe is one of Thailand’s best tropical islands for couples. But it also caters well for budget explorers on the Southeast Asia backpacker trail . There’s a scattering of hostels and budget bungalows that – while pricier than other Thai islands – won’t break your budget.

From Koh Lipe, you can even take the ferry onwards to Langkawi, one of Malaysia’s top tropical vacation spots.

What to Do in Koh Lipe

  • Set up camp in one of Koh Lipe’s awesome beach bars and chat the afternoon away with friendly locals.
  • Watch the sun come up at Sunrise Beach and dip back below the horizon at Sunset Beach.

grayl geopress filter bottle

Drink water from ANYWHERE. The Grayl Geopress is the worlds leading filtered water bottle protecting you from all manner of waterborne nasties.

Single-use plastic bottles are a MASSIVE threat to marine life. Be a part of the solution and travel with a filter water bottle. Save money and the environment!

We’ve tested the Geopress  rigorously  from the icy heights of Pakistan to the tropical jungles of Bali, and can confirm: it’s the best water bottle you’ll ever buy!

Woman scuba diving with a sea turtle in the tropical waters of the Gili Islands

Lombok suffered greatly in the wake of the 2018 earthquake, which destroyed homes and paused the island’s tourism. But now, the island is getting back on its feet, and tourists are a welcome sight. Plus, staying in Lombok is awesome; it’s even more laid-back than Bali and way less commercialised.

Besides Bali, Lombok is a springboard to the Gili Islands – three of the most tropical places in Southeast Asia. These are essentially broken down into:

  • Air – For mediation, yoga, and wellness as well as stellar diving.
  • Trawangan – For hedonistic backpackers hungry for nightlife.
  • Meno – For a romantic tropical island paradise or family holiday.

What to Do in Lombok and the Gili Islands

  • Support as many local businesses as you can and tip generously – it’ll help the locals regenerate their lost earnings.
  • If you’re short on time, stick to staying on one Gili Island rather than hopping around all three.

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol - beautiful tropical destination in the Philippines

Selecting the most beautiful tropical islands in the Philippines is no simple feat, but the chocolate hills of Bohol make it an easy choice alongside Palawan.

Bohol is the epicentre of outdoor nature fun in the Philippines. Once you’ve roamed the chocolate hills, you can take your pick from ziplining above the dense canopy, waterfall climbing, exploring caves, and cruising along jungle rivers.

Bohol is one of the most diverse islands in the Philippines. Every day is filled with different landscapes, animals, and adventures.

It’s the perfect area to stay in the Philippines for wanderers on a budget who want to see some otherworldly natural sights.

What to Do in Bohol

  • Let yourself get gooey-eyed over the googly-eyed Tarsiers.
  • Take a day trip to neighbouring Panglao Island – accessible via a bridge.

Leon Cascade - a beautiful waterfall on the tropical island of Mauritius

Don’t be fooled into thinking Mauritius is solely for honeymooners. Mauritius is still one of the best tropical vacation spots out there, even if you haven’t recently declared your undying love for your other half.

There’s not much of a backpacker scene on the island, but you can most definitely backpack Mauritius ! Despite the lack of a budget travel and hostel scene, there are some really dope accommodations on Airbnb fit for less financially buoyant travellers.

Mauritius is a real playground for those who like their idyllic tropical destinations to come with a side of adventure. Hiking, watersports, skydiving, and regular ol’ scuba diving: it’s an island where all your scary dreams can come true.

What to Do in Mauritius

  • Take a helicopter tour to see the ‘underwater waterfall’ off the coast of Morne.
  • Find a secluded spot in the less developed south end of the island for a wilder experience.
  • Alternatively, head north for tropical beach feels at a slow fishing village tempo.

Coastal views of the tropica island vacation spot Kauai in Hawaii

You can’t go wrong with visiting Hawaii no matter which of the state’s eight islands you choose as your destination. But – if you’re not sure where to start – check out Kauai. Kauai is perhaps the prettiest of the islands, with drop-dead gorgeous natural sights and the beaches to match

Besides that, Kauai is also the most backpacker-friendly Hawaiian island. It’s cheaper than the ultra swanky Maui and quieter than Big Island. Though there are still affordable villas in Kauai for those wanting a more traditional stay.

It’s also the wettest of the islands, seeing short bursts of rain more or less every day of the year. However, it’s for that very reason the ‘garden isle’ is so vividly green and gushing with waterfalls, such as the jaw-dropping Wall of Tears.

That being said, if you’d rather see a backdrop of spewing lava, stick with Big Island. It’s magma -nimous.

What to Do in Kauai

  • Scout out the famous shoot locations used in such films as the Pirates of the Caribbean, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Jurassic Park.
  • Explore the ‘other’ Grand Canyon – Waimea Canyon State Park.
  • Leave the accommodation behind in exchange for a tent under the stars. There’s mad camping in Hawaii .

A beautiful beachside villa on a tropical beach in Bermuda

With its pink tropical beaches, swathes of British phone booths, and the biggest monopoly on shipwrecks in the world, Bermuda isn’t your standard tropical paradise.

Bermuda is pricey, but it’s a top island destination if you’re a big spender with money to burn. It’s so expensive that even cooking in your Airbnb kitchen won’t make the slightest difference – even groceries come with x-rated price tags. That being said, it’s a very beautiful tropical island, and easily one of the coolest places to say you’ve visited and there are tons of cool places to stay in Bermuda .

Another popular option is to join a cruise that stops over at Bermuda. You can pack your beach gear , spend a day soaking up the Bermuda rays, and then be back somewhere cheaper by nightfall!

What to Do in Bermuda

  • Swizzle a rum swizzle while watching the skies turn pink over the pink sands
  • Take a glass-bottom boat and snorkelling combination tour out to the shipwrecks of the Bermuda Triangle.

Brazillian flag surfboards on a beach in tropical Ihla Grande

Less of a holiday destination in its own right, the small tropical island of Ilha Grande is more a weekend getaway or day trip when staying in Rio de Janeiro . Only an hour’s boat ride away from the city, the island allures with its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and exciting forest trails.

As Ilha Grande has managed to avoid mass development, the island remains mostly unspoiled with an easy-going atmosphere.

What to Do on Ilha Grande

  • Take a boat tour and visit the even tinier tropical islands around the main island. You’ll find even wilder beaches with marine rich waters crying out for a snorkelling session.
  • Have a wander around the abandoned maximum-security prison, Candido Mendes. You might bump into Julio de Almeida, a former inmate who decided to stay after the prison closed down.

A beach house on a tropical palm-lined beach on San Andres island, Colombia

Officially a part of Colombia, the seahorse-shaped Caribbean island of San Andrés brings together a sparkling mix of Latino, English, and Creole culture.

San Andrés is on the whole populated with Colombians who take advantage of budget flights from the mainland. They also waived the tourist tax fee on arrival. While the exotic island doesn’t generally appear on Latin American travel itineraries, it’s pretty backpacker-friendly.

What to Do in San Andrés

  • Island hop to the Johnny Cay Natural Regional Park, a protected coral islet inhabited by iguanas and reggae tunes.
  • Hire a golf cart from your hotel or local rental company and tour the island in style.

A sailing ship in the tropic ocean waters on the coast of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Comprising the main island and a chain of smaller islands, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines lingers in the south-east of the Caribbean Sea. The topography is unusual; besides your sky-blue seas and emerald green jungle, you’ll also find spiky cacti!

With yacht-filled harbours and chic private islands, this is a top island destination for sailors and boat owners. Affordable self-catering apartments and guesthouses are available on the main island. The further out you travel, however, the costlier and more exclusive your accommodation will become.

What to Do in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Visit Wallilabou Bay, where Captain Jack Sparrow escaped execution at the hands of the British Navy.
  • Summit the smouldering La Soufriere. Once at the crater, you can take a rope-guided walk down into the caldera of the volcano and get a closer look at the lava dome.

A boat tour in the Whitsundays, Queensland - Australia's most tropical places

Some of the world’s most beautiful tropical islands are located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Being Australia, the Whitsundays aren’t the cheapest tropical islands to explore, but they can be explored on a backpacker budget.

You’ve got some choices for where to stay in the Whitsundays . Use Airlie Beach as your base if you’re looking to form a crew to split costs with. And while you’re in the area, hitting up the Great Barrier Reef – the longest coral formation in the world – for a spot of diving is an unmissable experience.

What to Do in the Whitsundays

  • Book a boat trip to explore the uninhabited islands.
  • Feast on some of Australia’s best seafood.

Woman running across sand dunes in the tropical Canary Islands

Strictly speaking, the islands of Gran Canaria and its neighbours aren’t tropical destinations, but rather subtropical. But who likes rules, ey? Also – these islands have some of the most unique landscapes on the planet, encompassing mini deserts and volcanic black sand.

With guaranteed sun year-round, the Canary Islands are popular with Northern Europeans after some winter sunning. Gran Canaria is one of the most popular areas to stay , however, branching out just means you’re going to discover areas much less ventured by tourists!

You can also score some very budget-friendly package deals or camping spots. You just gotta break off the beaten path!

What to Do in the Canary Islands

  • Clamber around the volcanoes of the exotic island Gran Canaria.
  • Visit the lesser-known El Hierro for unspoilt beaches and rural solitude.

A bird flies in fron of a mountain on the tropical island of Bora Bora

Exclusive, expensive, and dripping with luxury, Bora Bora is one of the tropical places to vacation if you’ve got the cash. It’s expensive to get there, it’s expensive to sleep there, it’s expensive to eat there.

However, it’s also painfully beautiful, and the moment you plant your weary feet into the soft white sand of French Polynesia, all those money-shaped worries will drift away. It may not be one of the cheapest places in the world to travel, but man, it’s one of the best looking.

What to Do in Bora Bora

  • Lie back and soak up those desktop wallpaper views.
  • Hike up to the summit of Mount Pahia for a close-up of neighbouring volcano Mount Otemanu.

And that concludes our thoughts on the 25 best tropical places to visit! We hope that at least one of these tropical islands has sparked your wanderlust urges.

While tropical islands used to be reserved for the rich and famous, fortunately, that’s changed. While not always cheap, affordable accommodation is out there – even in places like the Caribbean and Indian Ocean.

A growing emphasis on eco-tourism and sustainable travel also means that it’s not all about booking a deluxe resort anymore. That’s always an option, of course, but many islands have shifted to low-impact or independent accommodations and tours.

Before you know it, you’ll be sipping on fresh coconut water while the salty sea air ruffles your hair.

You got me super interested in Bali, yet everything else I read is it’s a dirty shithole, and beaches are filthy and strewn with garbage. Is this still the case?

Hell no! Several of our team live in Bali and they love it.

It is true that certain areas like Kuta can be very crowded and boisterous during high season and the beaches there can get a bit trashed but there are plenty of clean pristine beaches around too.

When I visited Bali last years I was a bit dubious of it myself but soon fell in love with the place and can’t wait to get back.

August in the Caribbean: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

best tropical islands to visit in august

TripSavvy /  Julie Bang

With uncrowded resorts and plenty of elbow room on the beach, August makes a fine time to visit the Caribbean . Plus, you're likely to find the best deals on Caribbean flights and hotels.

Some destinations may feel a bit "dead" at this time of year, with many attractions closed for the offseason. With temperatures in the northern latitudes about the same as in the tropics at this time of year, travel to the Caribbean doesn't have as much "fun in the sun" appeal during August. But it's a great time to connect with the locals and enjoy the unhurried pace of island life.

Hurricane Season Considerations

Hurricane season in the Caribbean kicks into high gear in August, though your odds of encountering a storm remain lower than in September. However, to lessen your chance of getting caught in a hurricane or major storm on your trip, stay clear of the more eastern islands, including Jamaica , Haiti, Cuba, and the Bahamas . The southern Caribbean, from Aruba to Tobago , is usually the safest place to spend hurricane season, as these islands sit outside of the so-called hurricane belt.

Caribbean Weather in August

Although August is one of the hottest months in the Caribbean, it is still only a few degrees higher on average than the "coldest" months, as the ocean regulates the tropical air temperature year-round. With more than 7,000 islands spread across 1 million square miles of water, the Caribbean experiences surprisingly little temperature variation in its coastal areas, with most of the island nations reporting average highs and lows within 5 degrees of each other.

  • Average high temperature: 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius)
  • Average low temperature: 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25.5 degrees Celsius)

In August, the Caribbean Sea reaches its warmest temperature as well, with an average of 83 degrees. The biggest weather fluctuations occur in rainfall, with mountainous islands typically receiving more rain on their windward sides. On average, there are about 12 rainy days in the Caribbean in August, which marks the beginning of the rainy season. Wetter locations in August include Nassau in the Bahamas, as well as Martinique and Dominica.

What to Pack

Loose-fitting cotton or rayon keeps you cool during the day, but cotton holds moisture, especially on the more humid islands. Don’t forget a swimsuit, plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. While you can purchase almost anything you need, prices on the islands reflect the cost of importing products.

Though most resorts and hotels provide poolside towels, you may want to pack your own beach towel because many do not allow you to take pool towels onto the sand. Also, a light jacket comes in handy if you plan to travel to any of the higher elevations, such as the Blue Mountains of Jamaica or the Cordillera Central range in the Dominican Republic, or to combat overzealous air conditioning. Umbrellas won't do much good in a tropical storm or hurricane when strong winds accompany the rain, but a plastic poncho could protect you from a regular summer downpour without taking up much room in your luggage.

Pack dressier clothes for visiting nice restaurants or clubs. It's always a good idea to check the dress code policy before going out; some places require a sports coat, some a collared shirt. You'll also want a more formal pair of shoes than just flip-flops or sneakers.

August Events in the Caribbean

  • Anguilla Summer Festival : This annual tradition features boat races, beach parties, and parades, with lots of delicious food, exuberant music, and pageantry to fuel the fun.
  • Aruba International Regatta : Sailors from around the world come to the island to race all manner of watercraft, from yachts to sunfish to miniature boats and even stand up paddle boards.
  • Crop Over Festival Barbados : This six-week event extends into the first week of August, culminating in the Grand Kadooment Day celebration, which turns the streets of St. Michael into a kaleidoscope of sequins and feathers and colorful costumes.
  • North Sea Jazz Fest Curacao : This event closes out the month with some of the hottest names in music such as past performers Prince, Rod Stewart, Alicia Keyes, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, India Arie, Sting, Carlos Santana, Sam Cook, and others joining the island's best homegrown talent for three days of nonstop entertainment.

August Travel Tips

Consider purchasing travel insurance to cover your expenses in the event that a storm cancels or interrupts your trip. Pay attention to the fine print, though, as some policies specifically exclude hurricanes.

Inquire about package deals in August that bundle excursions with your hotel accommodations at a favorable rate, for example, or let you book an adjoining room for the kids at a discount.

Top reasons to consider a summer caribbean trip.

Here at Mango Tree Travel, we love summer Caribbean travel. It feels like we’ve discovered a secret way to see the authentic side of the islands.

We’ve found some of our favorite destinations in August, including Bequia Beach Hotel  in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and the magical beaches of Bonaire .

There are spectacular but often overlooked benefits of being in the Caribbean during the summer months. With the off-season in the Caribbean islands comes:

  • Lighter crowds
  • More affordable prices on accommodations
  • Guaranteed hot weather, even if a bit of rain comes along with it
  • The opportunity for a longer trip, with your kids on summer break!

If you’re contemplating an island vacation in August, we encourage you to go for it!

Caribbean Weather in August

You probably want to know what kind of weather to expect when visiting the Caribbean in summer.

No matter which Caribbean island you choose to visit in July or August, you can expect warm, humid days,  in the 80s on average, and often up into the 90s .  It’s the hottest and wettest time of year on most islands.

The rainy season in the Caribbean runs from roughly June through November. In most Caribbean destinations in the summer, that means occasional tropical storms and afternoon showers. It rarely means full-day rain, so you should not let rain in the forecast scare you off.

Caribbean Hurricane Season

According to the  National Hurricane Center , hurricane season in the Caribbeans runs from June to October. But what’s often miscommunicated to families thinking about heading to the tropics for their summer vacation is that most islands are unaffected by hurricanes each year.

Many islands in the southern Caribbean Sea are outside or right on the edge of the hurricane belt, which really targets the northern Caribbean islands, Bahamas, and parts of Florida.  August is not  the best time to visit Key Wes t, for example, but would be a great time to visit Tobago at the far end of the Caribbean chain.

Southern islands will provide the most reliable weather in the Caribbean in August, though others should not be written off.  (For the same reason, we also think the Caribbean is a sleeper hit for a  fall break destination in October. )

If you don’t want to limit yourself to the southern Caribbean, certain islands in the rest of the region offer a better probability of good weather in August.

We recommend considering the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Grand Cayman, and Montego Bay, Jamaica as potential August Caribbean destinations. Even though technically fall in the hurricane belt, they tend to be less impacted by the region’s rain and storms than other destinations.

Mango Tree Travel Tip:

If you want to travel to the Caribbean in August, don’t let hurricane season deter you. But be sure to purchase good travel insurance that includes hurricane coverage!

We recommend getting a quote from IMG Global . Travel interruption benefits are triggered under most IMG Global plans by a NOAA hurricane watch or warning at your destination.

Best Caribbean Islands to Visit in August

Best Caribbean Destinations in August

For all the reasons above, the best Caribbean island to visit in August is one outside the hurricane belt. As the weather is warm and sunny for much of the southern Caribbean, it’s hard to choose just one.

The best Caribbean destinations in August include:

  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Vincent and the Grenadines

These aren’t all islands, of course. But some of the best tropical weather and beach vibes, in our experience, can be found in Central and South American countries with Caribbean coastal regions.

We love these destinations so much for tropical travel – especially in the summer — that we had to include them on the list.

Aruba in August

Aruba is one of the most popular Caribbean destinations for families , with picturesque beaches, warm weather, and tons of family activities and entertainment. It’s also known as one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean.

It’s a little built up for some travelers’ tastes, but if you’re looking for an easy, kid-friendly place, with some of the best August weather, she’s your gal.

August Weather in aruba

August in Aruba is typically warm and sunny, with little rainfall. The average temps during the day are around 88°F (31°C), and can drop to the upper 70s at night. Humidity levels are relatively low.

The ocean will also be nice and warm for fun water activities, averaging at about 84°F (29°C). Expect a chance of occasional rain showers and thunderstorms, which pass pretty quickly.

Things to do in Aruba in August

August is a quiet month in Aruba, as far as special events go. But the natural attractions and beaches are enough. Aruba has so many unique wildlife experiences that kids will love, especially animal encounters at the Butterfly Farm ,  Donkey Sanctuary , or  Ostrich Farm .  Not to mention  horseback riding to natural hot springs , and spotting flamingos.

To explore the great outdoors, wander the trails of Arikok National Park or have some fun in the sand at Palm Beach or Eagle Beach.

Where to Stay in Aruba with Kids

Aruba is known for large hotels and inclusive resorts.  Most families choose to stay at a hotel on either Palm Beach or Eagle Beach, Aruba’s two most popular stretches of white sand.  Popular choices include the 400-room  Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino  and the 350-room  Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort & Casino  (both of which have kids’ clubs and casinos, an excellent combination).

It’s no secret that we prefer small, more unique hotels, though. (And frankly, for that reason, Aruba is not our top-choice of the Dutch Islands.) But those exist in Aruba too!

If your kids are over age 12, consider the  Boardwalk Boutique Hotel Aruba , an intimate 46-room hotel just off Palm Beach with grills, hammocks, and pastel-colored casitas.

Or, for something in between a boutique hotel and a massive resort, try  Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort  on Eagle Beach. Its 72 rooms include two-bedroom apartments with kitchens, and there’s a dedicated kids’ pool. Plus, it has more charm than the average big resort in Aruba.

Bonaire in August

If you want similar weather to Aruba, but in a smaller off-the-beaten path island setting, head to her sister island, Bonaire.  It’s one of our favorite vacation spots in August for families. You and your kids will have epic opportunities for snorkeling in one of the world’s most biodiverse marine environments.  If you’re interest is piqued, learn more about why we can’t stop raving about Bonaire as a family destination.

August Weather in bonaire

August in Bonaire is warm and sunny, with little rainfall. The average daytime temps hover around 88°F (31°C), and can drop to the upper 70s at night.

With ocean temperatures in the mid-80s, your family can enjoy perfect swimming, diving, and snorkeling conditions.

Expect a chance of rain showers and thunderstorms passing through, but they don’t last long and shouldn’t interfere much in your vacation.

Things to Do in Bonaire in August

You can enjoy the Taste of Bonaire  Food Festival in August. This is a great way to sample mouthwatering local cuisine and enjoy cultural performances.

The best way to experience Bonaire, though, is to rent a car and explore the local beaches . Never leave your snorkeling gear behind, and always be prepared to get in the water.  You can also go kayaking, windsurfing, birdwatching, or hiking in the stunning Washington Slagbaai National Park.

Where to Stay in Bonaire With Kids

We recommend four hotels when in Bonaire with kids, depending on what you’re looking for. Check out our full hotel profiles of the first three for all the details.

First, we love Harbour Village Beach Club for a laid-back, family-friendly vibe with well-appointed rooms and a beach you can’t wait to return home to at the end of each day.

Second, Delfins Beach Resort is the right choice for families looking for a lively atmosphere, a great pool, and delicious food.

Third, Bellafonte Bonaire is our recommended choice for families traveling with older kids looking for a mix between a luxury boutique hotel and a self-catering apartment.

And finally, there’s Buddy Dive Resort. If you’re looking for one of the Caribbean’s best resorts for scuba diving, Buddy Dive tops every list. This hotel is all about diving – but they make it easy for parents to get underwater. They have suites with multiple bedrooms, seasonal kids’  camps, and offer babysitting.

No matter the hotel or activities you choose for your family trip, you simply can’t go wrong in Bonaire.

Curacao in August

The third island in the ABC Dutch islands presents yet another option for an August family getaway.  Our ABC island guide  will help you decide which of our top three August Caribbean destinations are for you.

Curacao is a rich cultural and beach destination that will satisfy everyone in your family. The island  boasts warm, sunny weather in August, several sandy beaches, and a plethora of historic sites, restaurants, and museums to uncover.

The hotel choices in Curacao range from stylish boutique hotels in town to eco-lodges to the highest-end luxury. There’s something for every family, so read our full hotel profiles to get all the details.

If you want true luxury on the beach, head to  Baoase Luxury Resort . The beach setting hereis spectacular, unlike anything we’ve experienced. You’ll eat your gourmet dinner with your feet in the sand and relax on plush loungers on a pink-tinted beach with stunning views.

For more of an eclectic, in-town boutique hotel experience, consider the colorful oceanfront hotel,  Scuba Lodge . It sits in the center of the Pietermaai district, offering easy access to the city’s cozy cafes and fine-dining – but with views of the Caribbbean sea and a plunge pool that’s just big enough to really unwind.

Finally, f or a more traditional beach resort, with pools, restaurants, and easy beach access, all for a very affordable price, we think  Avila Beach Hotel  is a great choice for families. On top of the family-focused amenities, it’s walkable to the Pietermaai district – a location that’s hard to beat.

Tobago in August

4. Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago is a unique, underrated Caribbean destination for families – especially the island oasis of Tobago.  While Trinidad is a vibrant, cosmopolitan destination, Tobago offers the slow, beach vibes that most families dream of when concocting a Caribbean getaway. The fact that English is the official language of this Caribbean gem makes it an easy destination on the ground, too.

Being outside the hurricane belt, Tobago could very well be the best Caribbean island to visit in July and August. Enjoy picturesque beaches, warm weather for watersports, and truly get away from it all before school picks back up again in the fall.

August Weather in trinidad and tobago

In Trinidad and Tobago, August is warm and humid, with average daytime temps around 90°F (32°C). At night, temps drop to an average of around 75°F (24°C).

You can expect regular rainfall in August, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. These storms can be heavy but don’t last long! There’s still plenty of outdoor fun to be had in Trinidad and Tobago in August.

Things to Do in Trinidad and Tobago in august

August is a fun time to visit Trinidad and Tobago, as there are a few culturally significant annual events taking place.

Emancipation Day culminates on August 1st, commemorating the historic slavery emancipation.

And Independence Day on August 31st commemorates independence from Britain. Both offer live music, traditional performances, food stalls, and parades.

Aside from local events, there are always lots of outdoor activities to choose from.

Like many other islands, you’ll find beautiful beaches in Trinidad and Tobago, from cooling off in the ocean at Maracas Bay, to snorkeling and sunbathing at Pigeon Point Beach.

Or consider exploring the lush rainforest on a guided tour or trail walk. Find recommendations and guided activities at the Asa Wright Nature Centre or Caroni Bird Sanctuary. You’ll see monkeys, butterflies, tropical birds, and tons of unique plant life.

Where to stay in trinidad and tobago with kids

Our full collection of hotels in Trinidad and Tobago is coming in 2023.  But for now, let us just say that we’re itching to stay at  Castrara Retreats  in Tobago, with hillside cabins and a stunning backdrop.

We’re also intrigued by the tiny  Acajou Hotel  in a fishing village on Trinidad’s northern coast that’s one of the largest nesting sites for Leatherback turtles.

Bequia in August

5. St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Considering St. Vincent and the Grenadines? This Caribbean destination is a great family vacation spot in August!  We know from personal experience, as our Caribbean trip to Bequia Beach Hotel  was one of the inspirations for Mango Tree.

The islands of the Grendines – Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, the Tobago Keys – have been a haven for yachters and cruisers for years.  But if you can brave the journey to get there, the Grenadines are a paradise for families as well, with secluded beaches, chill vibes, and simply stunning, seemingly untouched scenery.

August Weather in the Grenadines

August in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is quite warm and humid, with average daytime temps of around 88°F (31°C). At night, temps drop to an average of around 77°F (25°C).

Expect frequent rainfall in August, with occasional rain showers and thunderstorms. These are heavy but typically brief. Humidity is relatively high, but the trade winds cool off the island to make it more comfortable.

Things to Do in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

On Saint Vincent, you can explore the lush tropical plants at St. Vincent’s Botanical Garden, or take a hike around La Soufriere Volcano for panoramic views.

But the true treat of this tropical nation is the outer islands beyond the capital.

We wholeheartedly recommend that families make the island of Bequia their home base. Just an hour ferry ride from the main island of Saint Vincent, this small island exudes charm, and is perfect for a laid-back vacation.

From boat trips in the crystal clear waters, to beach days in glittering sand, Bequia sings a song of the untouched Caribbean of years past. Check out our complete Bequia guide  for all the details you need on what to do on your family trip.

The island’s west coast, facing the Caribbean Sea, is renowned for its beautiful beaches that offer wonderful opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, or simply basking in the sunshine.

Barbados is a popular destination, especially among Brits, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors per year.  What makes it one of the best Caribbean destinations in August is the low season, where you’ll find significantly fewer crowds than in peak winter months, with more affordable prices too.

Things to Do in Barbados in August

August is an exciting month for cultural festivals and events in Barbados! Don’t miss  Crop Over Festival , a traditional and colorful harvest festival that’s been celebrated on the island for centuries. This week-long carnival celebration offers family-friendly activities, live music, the Bridgetown Market, and delicious local delicacies.

Year round, Barbados is beloved for its gorgeous beaches, especially along the Caribbean Sea on the island’s west coast. Whenever you make the journey to Barbados, take advantage of sunbathing, swimming, or snorkeling at Bathsheba Beach or Crane Beach.

There are also a plethora of incredible wildlife preserves to explore. Witness native animals and plants at the Flower Forest or Barbados Wildlife Reserve.

Where to stay in Barbados with kids

Barbados gets lots of British visitors and has a relatively well-developed tourism infrastructure. With dozens of resorts, there’s something for all budgets here.

Our full recommendations are coming soon, but in the meantime we’ve got our eyes on the following hotels:

For a luxury stay, start your search with Cobbler’s Cove or Coral Reef Club.

For spacious suites in a charming boutique hotel a little off the beaten path, with great beachfront snorkeling and a top Barbados restaurant on site, Little Good Harbour has caught our eye.

For families on a budget, the mid-range, family-focused Bougainvillea Barbados  is a solid choice.

Bocas Del Toro in August

7. Panamá (Bocas del Toro)

Bocas del Toro, on Panama’s Caribbean coast, is an awesome destination in August. The shoulder season will let you experience the region with the right balance of low prices, fewer crowds, and rainfall to bring the sublime natural beauty of the rainforest to life.

Grenada in August

Finally, we have arguably saved the best for last! Grenada is our original Caribbean love – and we discovered the island during hurricane season.  We learned from  the book that inspired the name for Mango Tree Travel  that, because Grenada sits outside the hurricane belt, it’s a popular destination for the summer and fall months.

So off we went.

In August in Grenada, you’re likely to encounter a community of cruisers  – folks spending extended periods of time exploring the Windward Islands by boat.  Cruisers need to retreat from the hurricane zone during the season. Grenada is below the below, and also offers numerous bays for safe anchorage.

As boaters flock to Grenada over the summer like geese in winter, the summer and fall months here are more lively than many other Caribbean islands, making it a special time to visit the island.

August Weather in Grenada

In August, Grenada is not hot but the weather is generally sunny and dry. With an average high of 88°F (31.1°C) and low of 76°F (24.4°C), August can be a great time for families to explore all that Grenada has to offer.

In August, Grenada experiences the tail end of its rainy season. This means that you can expect to get some welcomed afternoon showers during your stay on the island. Don’t worry though – these showers are typically short-lived and they won’t put a damper on your vacation. Plus, as a bonus, they add to the lush green of the island’s forests and wildlife.

Things to do in Grenada in August

There’s so much to do in Grenada with kids that we can’t fit it all into this post – you’ll have to check out our complete Grenada travel guide to get all the details!

And for those families interested in a truly local experience where you can connect with the island and the people who live there, prioritize the activities on our Grenada ecotourism guide .

In August in particular, though, you’ll encounter Grenada’s version of Carnival:  Spicemas .  The streets fill with brightly colored costumes, calypso and steel drum music, and a general joie de vivre.  Carnival celebrations may not inherently be the most kid-friendly events, but Grenada’s Spicemas can be entertaining for all ages – at least for portions of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which caribbean island has the best weather in august.

For the best weather in the Caribbean in August, head to the islands outside the hurricane belt.  Islands in the southeastern Caribbean – Trinidad and Tobago, the Grenadines, Grenada, and Barbados – typically are spared direct hits from hurricanes.  Likewise, the Dutch ABC islands off the coast of Venezuela are considered outside the hurricane belt.

There are also islands and coastal destinations on the Central American Caribbean coast, such as in Belize, Panama and Honduras, that are less likely to see major storms.

And, although technically in the hurricane zone, Jamaica, Antigua, and the US Virgin Islands have very low average rainfalls in August.

Is August a good time to visit the Caribbean?

Yes! The weather may not be perfect in the Caribbean in August, but if you pick the right island, you can still get long, sunny days and benefit from off-season pricing and fewer crowds. Just be sure to buy hurricane insurance to protect your trip investment.

Which Caribbean islands have festivals and events in August?

There are some exciting annual festivals and special events happening in the Caribbean in August. They include the epic ten-day Anguilla Summer Festival , an island-wide event involves boat races, costumed parades, block parties, and live outdoor music; the national Jamaica Independence Celebrations ; Spicemas  in Grenada; and   Crop Over Festival  in Barbados.

Protect your August Caribbean Trip

When you book travel with your kids – to the Caribbean or elsewhere – you should always make sure you have trip insurance in case things go wrong. You want to be sure you’re covered for trip delays or cancellation, medical costs, and lost luggage.

This is especially true if you travel to the Caribbean during hurricane season.

As mentioned above, we  suggest getting a quote from IMG global . The  Travel SE plan will offer sufficient coverage for most family trips. And we like it for the Caribbean in particular because, on top of having comprehensive medical, cancellation, and luggage protection, the hurricane protection is better than most. If NOAA issues a hurricane warning or watch for your destination 24-72 hours before departure, trip cancellation benefits kick-in (read the fine print for all plan details, of course).

The 20 Best Tropical Islands in the World

An empty white sand beach covered in palm trees on a sunny day

I’m a beach guy. When I think of paradise, my mind drifts to white sand beaches, azure blue water, and palm trees in tropical locales. When most people think of paradise, chances are they’re also thinking of tropical islands in far-flung corners of the world. Lounging with a good book , drinking from coconuts, soaking up the rays.

Tropical islands are that peaceful escape where the days drift by, the problems of the world melt away, and time slows down.

They are a sanctuary.

I spent a month living on an island in Thailand and it remains one of the best months of my entire life.

Having grown up in Boston and spent many years living in New York City , one of the main purposes of my travels is to avoid winter. I seek the sun.

I’ve been to many of the best tropical islands in the world (and there are sooooo many). After over fifteen years of travel and countless hours staring out into the ocean, I’ve done the “hard” research of visiting lots of islands to find the best islands in the world!

In this post, I’ll give you my favorite and best islands to visit in your travels!

Here’s a quick overview of the islands in case you’re looking for something specific (and don’t want to read the whole article):

With a quick overview out of the way, here’s my list of the best tropical islands in the world — no matter your budget, travel style, or interests! Just click on the island below to jump to that section!

Table of Contents

1. The Seychelles

2. the maldives, 4. bali and the gili islands, 7. big island hawaii, 8. the cook islands, 9. curaçao, 10. the perhentian islands, 11. bermuda, 12. barbados, 13. isla de providencia (old providence), 14. the san blas islands, 15. the canary islands, 17. the whitsunday islands, 18. the galápagos islands, 19. saint lucia, 20. the azores.

A boat anchored near a small island in the Seychelles during a beautiful sunny day

This group of 115 islands offers everything a beach lover could ask for. It’s an amazing place to visit for its diverse marine life and it has several nature preserves and marine parks, two of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Sadly, these islands are pretty expensive — though it is possible to visit on a budget if you plan ahead. The best time to visit is during the cool season from May to September when it rains less.

MOST POPULAR ACTIVITIES:

  • Glass Boat Snorkeling Tour
  • Reef Safari at St Anne Marine National Park
  • 5 Beach Adventure Tour

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN THE SEYCHELLES : Jeanny’s Apartments – A beachfront three-star hotel on Grand’Anse Praslin with free breakfast, free parking, and lovely staff.

The stunning, clear tropical blues waters of the Maldives along a narrow white-sand beach

These little coral islands are surrounded by excellent diving, snorkeling, and idyllic white-sand beaches, and are filled with friendly locals. Private resorts litter the islands, and a vacation here is also very pricey, as the Maldives is one of the most sought-after luxury destinations in the world.

Luckily, you can at least get here cheaply, as Thai Air Asia offers cheap flights to and from Thailand (you can find round-trip flights for around $300 USD!).

The best time to go to the Maldives is from November to May when the weather is cool and dry. June through October sees wetter and hotter weather due to the monsoon season.

MOST POPULAR ACTIVITIES

  • Go Diving or Snorkeling
  • Explore Malé
  • Go Parasailing

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN THE MALDIVES : Endheri Sunset Dhangethi ( Dhangethi) – A budget-friendly hotel near the beach that includes free bikes for use and basic amenities like flatscreen TVs and AC.

To start planning your trip, read my budget travel guide to the Maldives!

Aerial view of a line of longtail boats docked on a beach on the island of Ko Lipe, Thailand

Located in southern Thailand , this semi-off-the-map island is one of my favorites and the month I spent here remains one of fondest memories .

Here on Ko Lipe , the super-friendly locals bring in the daily catch for amazing seafood, as the island’s water is teeming with life. Accommodation is still basic, though more and more places now offer electricity 24/7. I expect development will slowly erode this paradise, however, so visit soon!

Close to this island is a little island that provides excellent snorkeling opportunities. You may even spot a few reef sharks. Bathtub-warm water and fine sand beaches kept me here for over three weeks. It will do the same for you. Visit between November and March for the best weather and the fewest people. May through October sees a harsh monsoon season that shuts the island down. The best way to get there is by boat from Pak Bara.

  • Full Day Multi-Island Snorkeling Trip
  • Visit Nearby Ko Adang
  • Explore Tarutao National Marine Park

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN KO LIPE : The Chic Lipe – A boutique hostel with a restaurant on-site that’s just a short walk to Walking Street and Sunrise Beach.

To start planning your trip, read my budget travel guide to Ko Lipe!

a gorgeous beach with a boat parked along the shore in the Gili Islands, Indonesia

But Indonesia has more than just Bali. The nearby Gili Islands are another incredible island getaway. Both destinations make for a more active tropical vacation and the weather remains pretty constant all year round (though April to October sees slightly drier weather). Both Bali and the Gili Islands are close enough that you should be able to visit them both on your trip to really get the most out of this idyllic corner of the world.

  • Sunrise Mount Batur Hike
  • Full-Day Instagram Highlights Tour
  • Waterfall, Rice Terraces & Monkey Forest Tour

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN BALI AND THE GILI ISLANDS : Tribal Bali (Canggu) – A fun coworking space and hostel with an on-site bar, infinity pool, pool table, and super chill vibe.

To start planning your trip, read my budget travel guide to Bali!

Remote islands surrounded by blue water in Fiji

It’s a popular destination with young people and honeymooners, with something for everyone on offer — diving, sailing, snorkeling, whale watching, peaceful luxury, and much more! Most young people and budget travelers head to the Yasawa Islands , known for their inexpensive accommodation, cheap transportation, and late-night parties. The temperature remains mostly constant throughout the year, with cyclones occurring between November and January.

  • Serenity Island Sailing and Snorkeling Trip
  • Mamanuca Islands All-Inclusive Sailing Cruise
  • Viti Levu: Mud Pool, Temple, and Sleeping Giant Garden

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN FIJI : The Beachouse (Coral Coast) – A family owned resort located in a sheltered sandy lagoon, with private bungalows as well as dorm rooms available. Includes free breakfast and free kayak rentals.

To start planning your trip, read my budget travel guide to Fiji!

Thatched bungalow on the water in French Polynesia

One of the biggest honeymoon destinations in the world, Tahiti offers pure paradise and a lot of romance. Its very name has long been synonymous with tropical paradise. Here you can relax in the sun, scuba dive, enjoy fine seafood, and take a morning dip right from your bungalow.

The island is expensive and caters to a more affluent tourist crowd, though there are still ways to visit on something of a budget. Try to visit the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands to get an insight into Polynesia culture. Le Marché Papeete (the public market) is the place to try local cuisine and pick up souvenirs. The weather is tropical all year round and very humid, though May to October sees cooler temperatures.

  • Bora Bora: Shark and Snorkeling Safari
  • Whale and Dolphin Watching Tour
  • 4X4 and Jet Ski Adventure Tour

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN TAHITI : Manomano Lodge – A cozy beachfront lodge with free Wi-Fi, a shared outdoor lounge and garden, and a fully-equipped kitchen.

To start planning your trip, read my budget travel guide to Tahiti!

Steaming Hale Ma'uma'u Volcano Crater at Kilauea volcano, with the endemic Lehua tree in the foreground, on the Big Island in Hawaii, USA

Then there are all the waterfalls on the island, great snorkeling and diving, and the lush wilderness of the Waipi’o Valley, once home to Hawaiian kings. Big Island has it all. I mean it’s Hawaii — how could you go wrong?!

The wet season is from October to March, though the weather is cooler during these months. However, despite being located near each other, weather conditions on each island can vary greatly, so you never know what to expect!

  • Afternoon Snorkeling Sail to Captain Cook’s Monument
  • Eco-Friendly Twilight Manta Ray Adventure
  • Mauna Kea Summit: Sunset Stargazing Adventure

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN HAWAII : My Hawaii Hostel – This hostel is close to everything you’ll need and offers free parking, free Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen, and has a chill indoor/outdoor common area to lounge in.

To start planning your trip, read my budget travel guide to Hawaii!

Person snorkeling in the Cook Islands

With few amenities, this is the best place to find your inner castaway and escape modern life. Rarotonga is the largest and most visited island, however, I suggest you visit a few other islands if you make it out this way. Once you leave the main island, you’ll have miles of beaches and their crystal clear waters (perfect for snorkeling, diving, swimming, and sea kayaking) virtually to yourself!

The islands see similar weather to the rest of the area, with temperatures hot and humid all year round.

  • Watch a traditional dance show
  • Explore Aitutaki Island
  • Hike Around Rarotonga

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN THE COOK ISLANDS : Ranginuis Retreat – Located on the scenic Ootu Beach, this hotel includes free airport transports, free kayak rentals, and an outdoor swimming pool.

To start planning your trip, read my budget travel guide to the Cook Islands!

Brightly painted buildings on the tropical island of Curaçao in the Caribbean

As the largest and most populated of the Netherlands Antilles, Curaçao has the most going on and the most “social life.” It’s the hippest island in the chain and the most visited by younger travelers, so hit the beaches, lay in the sun, and party the night away. This may not be Gilligan’s Island, but what it lacks in privacy, it makes up for in romance and fun.

The weather is pretty stable here year-round. It’s always hot and usually sunny. If it rains, it’s between November and January. And don’t worry about hurricanes – it’s below the hurricane belt!

  • Kayaking Tour
  • Half-Day Fishing Trip
  • Speedboat Adventure Snorkeling

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN CURAÇAO : First Hostel Curaçao – Located in a former ice cream factory in Willemstad, this hostel boasts an outdoor pool, dive shop, relaxing terrace, and air-conditioning.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to Curaçao!

Colorful jetty sticking out into the clear turquoise waters off a beach in the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

There’s not much to do here, and visitors typically lay on the beach all day, resting from last night’s drinking. It’s the perfect place to put up a hammock; the Malay word Perhentian roughly translates to “stopping point” — an appropriate name considering most travelers who visit here end up staying longer than anticipated. The islands are also great for divers and snorkelers, as the reefs and crystalline waters are home to a wide variety of coral, sea turtles, sharks, and colorful fish.

A strong monsoon season limits when to go (visit between March and October). During the other times, it’s best to head to Thailand, where the weather is nicer.

  • Go Jungle Trekking
  • See Turtles at Turtle Beach

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN THE PERHENTIAN ISLANDS : Senja Bay Resort – Just one minute from the beach, this budget resort offers both fan-cooled and air-conditioned rooms, free Wi-Fi, and an on-site restaurant.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to the Perhentian Islands!

The historic Commissioner's House, surrounded by fortified walls in the Caribbean sea, on the island of Bermuda

While you will need a respectable budget, if you give Bermuda a chance you’ll find an island home to some of the most beautiful beaches in all of North America and the Caribbean (my favorites are Church Bay, Elbow Beach, and Chaplin Bay). The locals are incredibly friendly and you can find some world-class food here too. There’s tons to keep you busy, with caves to explore, lots of hiking, and world-class snorkeling and diving (Bermuda is known as the shipwreck capital of the world; there are over 300 shipwrecks here).

  • Visit the Crystal and Fantasy Caves
  • Climb the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse
  • Explore the Royal Naval Dockyard

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN BERMUDA : Blue Horizons Guest House – A cozy three-star guesthouse with a homey vibe and helpful staff that’s close to the beach.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to Bermuda!

Bright image of wooden promenade at the waterfront of Bridgetown in Barbados.

Like in Bermuda, you’ll find amazing beaches and caving here. You’ll also find some world-class surfing. The food here is amazing, and you’ll be able to enjoy expensive, delicious meals alongside cheap local food.

While there is plenty of luxury to be found here, you can also visit on a moderate budget making this one of the more affordable islands in the Caribbean .

  • Bridgetown Walking Tour
  • Rum Distillery Tour
  • 5-Hour Island Highlights Tour

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN BARBADOS : Monteray Family Hotel – Located a quick 2 minute walk from the white-sand Dover Beach, this two-star property includes fully equipped kitchenettes, private terraces, and air-conditioning. There’s a pool on site too.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to the Caribbean!

Colorful shack on a beach surrounded by palm trees in Providencia, Colombia

Unlike its luxurious Caribbean neighbors, here you’ll only find more budget-friendly hotels and guesthouses. Everything needs to come by ship or airplane, so it’s not super cheap. However, since no non-natives can own property there is no influx of overdevelopment, keeping the island simple but beautiful. For a more rustic, non-touristy getaway, this might be the island for you!

  • Hike El Pico
  • Go Diving & Snorkeling
  • Relax on Playa Manzanillo

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA : Berton Place – With a homey ambience and local owners who go above and beyond, this three-star guesthouse includes free Wi-Fi, free parking, and is just 10 minutes from the beach.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to Colombia!

A thatched hut off the coast of the San Blas Islands in Panama

These mostly uninhabited islands are under the control of the Guna indigenous people and are quite rustic, making for a great off-the-grid island getaway. The lodging here is made up of simple huts, hammocks, and tents, and there are tons of beautiful spots for good sailing, diving, and snorkeling.

You can also book sailing expeditions here if you’re looking to get off the islands and out onto the water for a few days. Most sailing charters cost around $180-200 USD per person, per day.

  • 4-Day Island Hopping Adventure
  • Go Snorkeling

BEST PLACE TO STAY THE SAN BLAS ISLANDS : Discovery Gunayar – This laidback lodge is is right on the beach and offers rustic but comfortable accommodations with free breakfast.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to Panama!

Aerial view with Puerto de la Cruz, in background Teide volcano, Tenerife island, Spain

Tenerife is the largest of the islands and has a bit of everything, including one of the largest Carnival festivals in the world each February and two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the city of La Laguna and Teide National Park, home to Mount Teide (the largest mountain in Spain and the third-largest volcano in the world).

For beaches, head to Fuerteventura to soak up some rays. And for some hiking, make your way to Gran Canaria with its incredible and diverse landscapes. But no matter which island in the Canaries you choose, you’ll get to enjoy one of the best tropical islands in the world.

  • Dolphin and Whale Eco-Cruise
  • Half-Day Luxury Catamaran Cruise
  • Stargazing at Teide National Park

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN THE CANARY ISLANDS : Lagarto house – This chill hostel in Tenerife has an outdoor pool, bikes you can use to get to the beach, a BBQ area, and a fully-equipped kitchen.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to Spain!

People walking down a stone causeway leading to the white-washed Old Town town in Naxos, Greece

Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, head out for a hike, enjoy some water sports, or learn about history (there’s a huge ancient temple gate, a medieval castle, and the mountain Zeus was supposedly raised on, just to name a few sites), Naxos will be able to keep you entertained as you enjoy your little slice of Greek heaven away from the tourist mob.

  • Naxos Castle Walking Tour
  • Full–Day Historical Bus Tour
  • Rhina Cave Catamaran Cruise

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN NAXOS : Soula Naxos – Located in Saint George Beach just 20 meters from the ocean and 2 minutes from the center of town, this budget-friendly hotel includes free Wi-Fi and lovely views from the rooftop terrace.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to Naxos!

A propeller plane in the water off the coast on the Whitsunday Islands in Australia

The vast majority of these islands are designated national parks, so naturally there are some amazing coral reefs for snorkeling and diving and pristine beaches (my favorite is Whitehaven Beach). Upon arrival, you’ll instantly see why this is one of the best tropical islands in the world — and why over half a million people visit a year.

One of the most popular ways to see the islands is via a multi-day sailing tour (which is what I did when I visited). It was an amazing experience — especially diving! Expect to pay between 399-499 AUD per person for a three-day/two-night sailing trip.

  • Whitehaven Full-Day Eco-Cruise
  • Ocean Rafting Tour
  • Full-Day Catamaran Sailing Trip

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN THE WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS : Whitsunday Apartments – Just 2 minutes from Catseye Beach, these private apartments offer free Wi-Fi, ocean views from each room’s private balcony, and free airport transfers. There’s a beautiful outdoor pool as well.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to the Whitsunday Islands!

Three large marine iguanas standing on the rocks in the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador

Formed from active volcanoes, they’re most famous for being the birthplace of Darwin’s theory of evolution. The opportunities to see incredible wildlife here are practically unrivaled, with marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins, sea lions, orcas, manta rays, the Giant Galapagos tortoise, and many more incredible species.

Unfortunately, this is a very fragile ecosystem and it’s being drastically affected by the changing climate. Visit here while you can and be especially mindful of your impact on the environment. Book a multi-day visit to make the most of your time.

  • Go Kayaking
  • Snorkel with Wildlife

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS : Hostal Romy – This two-star hotel close to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno Beach offers air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and kitchenettes in rooms.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to Ecuador!

Beautiful blue water and a massive green hill in Saint Lucia

First known as “Louanalao” by the indigenous Arawak in 200 CE, St. Lucia is filled with beautiful birds, orchards full of tropical fruit trees, world-class diving, incredible wildlife, and crystalline blue waters. Whether you’re looking for a lazy escape or an active holiday, St. Lucia will be able to keep you entertained!

  • 5-Hour Snorkeling Adventure
  • Full-Day Catamaran Tour
  • Gros Piton Hiking Tour and Sulphur Spring Bath

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN SAINT LUCIA : Green Fig Resort & Spa – This hotel boasts an outdoor swimming pool, a complimentary continental breakfast, free private parking, a garden, and a terrace. Rooms have basic amenities like coffee makers and free toiletries, and some rooms have a balcony.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to St. Lucia!

the rolling hills of the Azores in Portugal

Each of the islands offers a little something different. Rent a car and explore the winding roads of the main island, São Miguel, taking in secluded beaches and picturesque waterfalls, enjoy the wine in Pico, and go hiking on São Jorge. Best of all, it’s close to both Europe and North America and makes for a great stopover point if you’re traveling between the two.

  • Whale & Dolphin Watching
  • Kayaking Vila Franca do Campo Islet
  • Caldeiroes Canyoning on Sao Miguel

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN THE AZORES : Out of the Blue – This boutique hostel has a gorgeous interior as it’s set in a renovated traditional orange farmer’s manor. There’s also a pool, fast Wi-Fi, and a beautiful garden with hammocks for unrivaled relaxing.

To start planning your trip, check out my budget travel guide to to Portugal!

This is by no means a comprehensive list of all the best tropical islands in the world. There are countless other islands worthy of attention and it would take multiple lifetimes to visit them all (though I’d be happy to try!).

That being said, I think these are some of the best tropical islands in the world. Each one of these is a veritable paradise in its own right. You’ll be hard-pressed to find more beautiful surroundings than some of these islands.

But don’t take my word for it. Book a trip and experience a slice of paradise for yourself!

One of Mykonos’ biggest draws is its beaches, with dozens of soft shores to enjoy. If you prefer to be in the thick of the action, go to Paradise, Super Paradise, or Psarrou beaches on the south coast.

There is a quieter side to this windswept island, though. For a calmer Mykonos beach with fewer visitors, try Paralia Ftelias, tucked into the central north coast.

Enjoy a soothing dip in the clear water before drying off and dining at the chic and relaxed Ftelia Pacha, a beachfront restaurant and bar with an Ibiza vibe.

Mykonos Town, also known as Chora, is filled with chic boutiques such as Amnesia for gorgeous jewelry, floaty dresses, and leather sandals.

Try Themis Z for stylish tablescapes and stylish resort wear, while Rarity is a must-visit if you’re looking to extend your art collection. There are outposts of Dior and Gucci, and an abundance of fashion, leather goods, and home boutiques to explore.

One of the best things to do in Mykonos , however, is simply to stroll among Chora’s pretty whitewashed buildings with their floral doorways and brightly-painted balconies.

Admire the gleaming white church of Panagia Paraportiani in Mykonos, which is actually five churches, one built on top of the other.

Beautiful windmills of Little Venice, Mykonos

Summer is undoubtedly the best time of year for whale watching in Iceland. From Dalvik, near Akureyri in north Iceland, you could go in search of Eyjafjordur’s humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, harbor porpoises, and even blue whales, fin whales, and orca.

Zakynthos, one of the best islands to visit in August

Lying in the dazzling Ionian Sea, to the west of Greece’s mainland, you’ll find sun, sea, and delicious food on Zakynthos , also known as Zante.

Zakynthos is one of August’s best islands to visit for its warm sea, perfect for swimming.

Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, Greece

The star attraction on Zakynthos is Shipwreck Beach, or Paralia Navagio, on the north of the island.

This sandy cove, carved into soaring limestone cliffs, is one of the most beautiful places in Greece and is only accessible by boat. In the center of Navagio is the rusting shipwreck of MV Panagiotis, which ran aground here in 1980.

Aerial view of Tsilivi Beach in Zakynthos, Greece

Swimming and diving in Zakynthos’s clear waters are among the island’s most popular activities. Greek beaches , including Tsilivi, Alykanas, and Laganas, are within easy reach of the capital and offer sweeping soft sand, watersports, bars and restaurants, and sun loungers.

Loggerhead sea turtle in Zakynthos

There’s a kaleidoscope of marine life to be discovered underwater, too, with the island a breeding site for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle.

The Barracuda and Octopus reefs on the Keri Peninsula and the island of Marathonissi, in the southern part of Zakynthos, also draw divers and snorkelers for their colorful array of grouper, bream, and moray eels.

Historic site of Bóchali Venetian Castle in Zakynthos, Greece

Bóchali Venetian Castle in Zakynthos, Greece

Studded with mountain villages, olive groves, monasteries, and wineries, Zakynthos’ hinterland is equally rewarding, while culture-hungry travelers will enjoy the island’s capital, also called Zakynthos.

Delve into Zakynthos’ 16th-century Agios Markos Church, which draws parallels with St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, and climb to the ruins of Bóchali Venetian Castle, high above the town. Stop at the castle for an iced tea or coffee and gaze at the unending sapphire-blue views that unfold toward the mainland.

Couple exploring in Bonaire

Bonaire is a nature lover’s paradise, and with fewer crowds than other Caribbean islands and temperatures hovering around 86-88°F, August is a wonderful time to visit.

Bonaire is the most unspoiled of the three ABC Islands , with the wildlife-filled Washington Slagbaai National Park occupying the northern swathe of the island.

Follow one of the walking tracks or three hiking trails to search for parrots, iguanas, parakeets, and flamingoes, while sea turtles nest on the tropical white shores.

Snorkeling in Bonaire

You’ll want to pack a snorkel, with the turquoise waters around Bonaire and the smaller island of Klein Bonaire—one of the largest uninhabited Caribbean islands—a protected marine reserve.

Witness the dazzling display of Caribbean coral reefs , mangroves, and seagrass beds and some of the 350 species of fish that inhabit these rich waters, such as mahi-mahi, clownfish, blue parrotfish, barracudas, and queen angelfish.

Klein Bonaire

For a totally tropical island experience, one of the best things to do in Bonaire is to take a water taxi from Kralendijk, the capital of Bonaire, to visit Klein Bonaire Beach, famous for its chalk-white sand.

Alternatively, commandeer a kayak in Lac Bay, where a wild tangle of mangrove forest meets a remarkable reef, home to queen conch, baby seahorses, and baby rays.

Cork, Ireland

Roughly the size of Indiana, the green-hued island of Ireland is a wonderful place to explore, especially during August when the country sees the least rainfall.

In characterful Cork, southwest Ireland, savor the local delicacies at the historic English Market. You’ll find stalls brimming with regional produce that Ireland is known for , such as cheese, sourdough bread, smoked salmon, oysters, and whiskey.

Fine sands of Tuerredda Beach, Sardinia

Tuerredda Beach, Sardinia

If a languid day spent on a sun-kissed beach is your idea of a vacation well spent, opt for a dose of la dolce vita on Sardinia for your August island getaway.

While many European hotspots can become crowded during the peak of summer, with over 1,000 miles of coastline, Sardinia offers ample space for sunseekers to unwind.

Travel to Tuerredda Beach on the southern tip of Sardinia for its seductively soft sand and rustic feel. This Sardinian beach is flanked by a thick pine forest and faces the tiny Isola di Tuerredda, after which it takes its name.

Curacao, one of the best islands to visit in August

The island of Curaçao is a wonderful vacation choice in August. Outside of peak season, travelers will see fewer crowds but still experience warm temperatures.

What strikes visitors most about Curaçao’s capital, Willemstad, is its UNESCO-listed downtown area, with its prevalent Dutch colonial architecture. Stroll along the vibrant Handelskade on St. Anne’s Bay to admire the colorful waterfront buildings and browse the local market.

View of Queen Emma Bridge, Curaçao

Queen Emma Bridge, Curaçao

Saunter across the swinging Queen Emma Bridge, opened in 1888, this pedestrian pontoon bridge connects the Punda and Otrobanda districts.

One of the best things to do in Curaçao is to visit the Kurá Hulanda Museum for its thought-provoking history of the African slave trade. The Curaçao Maritime History Museum is insightful, too, for its exhibition detailing the island’s seafaring past.

Lush landscape of Christoffel National Park, Curaçao

Active travelers will love Curaçao’s sprawling Christoffel National Park in the north of the island. Set on three former plantations, this jungle-covered park is dominated by the mighty Christoffel Mountain, the island’s tallest peak at 1,230 feet.

Galapagos Islands

People looking at Galapagos toirtoises

The remote and largely uninhabited Galapagos Islands are unique because of their flora and fauna. Lying roughly 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, this 19-island volcanic archipelago is among the best islands to visit in August.

At this time of year, the Humboldt Current cools the waters, slightly cooling land temperatures, too, creating the perfect environment for nature hikes.

Blue-footed boobies in the Galapagos

The Galapagos Islands are a real-life natural history museum. Inspiring Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection in 1859, its species include frigatebirds, sea lions, land iguanas, giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, flightless cormorants, and penguins.

Visit the Charles Darwin research center before gazing at unique cacti formations, land iguanas, giant tortoises, and pink flamingos on Santa Cruz .

A highlight for many travelers here is observing nesting blue-footed boobies—with the best time to see them between June and August.

Sally Lightfoot crabs in the Galapagos

Malta, one of the best islands to visit in August

Valletta, Malta

With temperatures consistently reaching 80 to 85°F, Malta is one of the best islands to visit in August for warm-weather seekers.

Waterfront view of Valletta, Malta

History is, arguably, Malta’s biggest bragging right with evidence that the islands were first inhabited 7,000 years ago. Begin to unpack some of Malta’s past in Valletta , the honey-colored UNESCO-listed capital.

Set on the north side of Malta’s Grand Harbour, facing the Three Cities, Valletta is a compact, walled city on a rocky outcrop home to fanciful balconied buildings and magnificent Baroque churches.

Interior of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, Malta

St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta

One of the most bewitching is St. John’s Co-Cathedral, where travelers pore over the domed-frescoed ceiling and Caravaggio’s The Beheading of Saint John , painted in 1608.

The city’s rich tapestry of decadent palaces and extravagant buildings was established by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century. By contrast, one of Valletta’s newest buildings is the 2015 Renzo Piano-designed Parliament House, next to the ruins of the Neoclassical Royal Opera House and minutes from St. George’s Square and the Grand Master’s Palace.

Lush landscape of Lower Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, Malta

Lower Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, Malta

From the peachy, photogenic streets of Valletta, make your way to Lower Barrakka Gardens on the edge of the city walls and down to the Grand Harbour.

Turquoise waters of Blue Lagoon in Gozo, Malta

If you’re in Malta to unwind, travel via boat to Gozo’s Blue Lagoon for a thrilling day of paddling, snorkeling, and sunbathing. Go as early as possible to secure a sun lounger and try to beat the crowds.

The best places to go in August 2023

best tropical islands to visit in august

Try some of the less busy islands of the Cyclades © Adrienne Pitts / Lonely Planet

Want an adrenaline-fueled adventure? Would you prefer to relax by the sea? Or maybe you’re keen to absorb some culture at a festival?

August is prime time for an epic escape, and whatever you’re after. So check out some of our recommendations for where to travel this August and start planning your next adventure.

Where are the best places to travel to in August for relaxation?

Enjoy the north coast of Sri Lanka; hit the lesser-known islands of Greece.

Northeast Sri Lanka

Why now? Loll or surf at Indian Ocean beaches under the sun.

There’s a triple whammy of good news about Sri Lanka ’s northeast in August: the weather is great, prices are low and beaches are quiet. Unlike the southwest , which catches the rain now, the northeast coast this month has blue skies, warm waters and – at Arugam Bay particularly – good surf. Civil war ensured this region was largely off-limits until recently, so the coast is little-developed – you can still find an empty patch of sand at spots such as Nilaveli , Uppuveli and Passekudah . The center is also pretty dry in August, good for visiting the rock fortress of Sigiriya and spiritual hub Kandy , which bursts into noisy, colorful life during the Esala Perahera celebrations honoring the Sacred Tooth relic of Buddha each summer.

Cyclades, Greece

Why now? To swim between offbeat isles.

Okay, we won’t lie: August across this magnificent Mediterranean archipelago is hardly castaway-quiet. The weather is too alluringly hot and sunny, and popular islands like party-central Mykonos and dreamy Santorini heave. However, smaller outposts – such as Schinousa, uninhabited Fidousa and craggy-coasted Iraklia – will be far less crowded. Plus, there’s a way to get away from everyone: jump in that crystal-clear blue sea. Book an open-water swimming holiday to hop between bays, coves and beaches under your own steam – rather than hordes of tourists, you’ll see sea caves, rock arches, towering cliffs, and colorful fish.

Where are the best places to travel to in August for wildlife and nature?

Spend some time foraging in Sweden; explore the wilderness of Ecuador.

Why now? For a free foraging adventure.

Allemansrätt is an amazing thing. This “Right of Public Access,” written into Swedish law, means everyone has the right to freely roam the countryside – that is, to visit any beach , swim in any lake, fish anywhere off the coast, put up a tent on (almost) any patch of ground and forage all over. And in a country with as much wonderful wilderness as Sweden, the possibilities are endless – and even in peak-season August, there’s plenty enough space for everyone. Plus, it’s a great month for foraging: look out for wild mushrooms plus bushes heavy with blueberries, raspberries, lingonberries and cloudberries. But where to go? Perhaps a wild camp kayaking expedition around the islands of the Stockholm Archipelago ? Or a hike along the Kungsleden (King’s Trail) in remote Swedish Lappland ? Or how about berry-picking in the forests of Skuleskogen National Park?

Find everything you need to know to plan a trip on our Sweden hub .

Why now? Climb volcanoes, delve into the rainforest and browse markets.

Little Ecuador packs the best of South America into one handy-sized package. It has amazing architecture in Quito and Cuenca ; Inca remains at Ingapirca; Indigenous markets at Otavalo , Saquisil and Zumbahua; magnificent cones (including picture-perfect Cotopaxi ) along the “Avenue of the Volcanoes”; and profuse wildlife in the Amazon, the Galápagos and the northern cloud forests. Both highlands and rainforests are driest in August, so it’s prime time for absorbing the cultural highlights and getting active on volcanoes and rafting whitewater rivers. Ecuador’s a bargain, to boot, with great-value accommodation.

Find everything you need to know to plan a trip on our Ecuador hub .

Where are the best places to travel to in August for culture?

Enjoy the culture of Swaziland; tango in Buenos Aires.

Why now? For natural and cultural festivities in Africa’s little culture capital.

Landlocked eSwatini (known until 2018 as Swaziland) has all the animal allure you’d expect from a wild tract of southern Africa and August is the height of the dry season. There are 17 game-packed protected areas spread across this pocket-sized nation’s bushveld, highveld and subtropical forests – ranger-led walks in Hlane Royal National Park are a particular thrill. But arguably it’s the human interactions here that’ll leave the greatest impression. Ruled by one of the world’s last remaining absolute monarchs, eSwatini has a uniquely well-preserved cultural heritage, displayed in most dazzling fashion in late August or early September at the Umhlanga Reed Dance (this year's falls on September 4, so extend your trip until then). This huge-scale event at Ludzidzini sees up to 40,000 exuberant, brightly dressed girls dance before the king and the queen mother, accompanied by poker-faced warriors. It’s an unmatched eruption of swaying, singing, color and noise.

Find everything you need to know to plan a trip on our eSwatini hub .

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Why now? Learn to tango in the home of the world’s sexiest dance.

Nowhere else are a city and a dance so inextricably linked. Tango is, simply, the heartbeat of Buenos Aires , and the Argentine capital’s passion for both the music – exemplified by the songs of Carlos Gardel, which still waft out of many a window – and the dance never seems to diminish. The cool month of August isn’t just a wonderful time to visit BA : it also sees the city fling itself into its annual Festival de Tango, with performances and concerts by the finest exponents. At other times, you can enjoy more or less touristy (but usually high-caliber) tango shows at various clubs and theaters, or simply watch the weekly Sunday sessions in Plaza Dorrego . But to really feel the spirit of the dance, join a lesson at a San Telmo milonga (dancehall) and stay for the late-night free-for-all with expert Porteños afterward, fuelled by fine Argentine red wine.

Where are the best places to travel to in August for food and drink?

Taste the incredible hawker food of Singapore; hit up the stalls of Portland

Why now? For greenery and gluttony.

Singapore is a hot and tasty prospect year-round. Since it’s practically on the equator, it’s always warm here, while the food scene – from Michelin-starred to street stalls – is always delicious. August, when local school holidays are over and rain is scarce, can be especially mouthwatering. There’s a growing focus on thinking local and sustainable, too, with a resurgence in the popularity of the city’s hawker market culture and comfort food faves ( laksa , hokkien mee rice, fried kway teow noodles), young “hawkerpreneur” chefs adding hipness to the traditional scene and attempts to tackle food-waste issues. Indeed, Singapore is aiming for a greener future all round, with a pledge to double the size of its nature parks and plant more than a million trees by 2030.

Portland, Oregon

Why now? To eat and drink outside.

The Pacific Northwest is notorious for its damp, misty weather. However, your best bet for a break with less drizzle is in August: it’s one of the region’s hottest, driest months, and ideal for soaking up Portland ’s alfresco summer food scene. At this time of year it’s all about exploring the distinct neighborhoods , hanging out on patios and plazas, grazing from food trucks, browsing farmers markets, supping at microbreweries (there are around 70 in town) and scootering between award-winning baristas. Indeed, Portland has more roasters and cafes per capita than any other city in the USA – coffee is treated as seriously as wine here. A java crawl might include rock-star roasters Stumptown, an iced cold brew at Courier and a cuppa at Bison, the city’s only Native American–owned coffee shop.

Where are the best places to travel to in August for adventure?

Hike through Georgia; road trip through Flinders Range.

Caucasus, Georgia & Armenia

Why now? Hike a spectacular, sustainable trail.

When completed, the Transcaucasian Trail will be a monster – a marvelous 3000km (1864-mile) monster, streaking across the little-visited mountains of Georgia and Armenia , from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea. The project, begun in 2015, aims to safeguard the nature and culture of the Caucasus by creating a world-class hiking route and developing sustainable-tourism initiatives along the way. Trekkers will be able to follow centuries-old shepherds’ tracks, visit monasteries and medieval villages, stay in family guesthouses, feast on home-cooked dishes and raise a glass (or three) of excellent local wine. Hundreds of kilometers have already been mapped, including the full north–south crossing of Armenia, via the peaks of Azhdahak and Khustup, Lakes Arpi and Sevan , the national parks of Dilijan and Arevi, and the canyons of Dzoraget and Debed. A section through Georgia’s Upper Svaneti is ready, too, where the high-altitude passes aren’t snow-free until July.

Find everything you need to know to plan a trip on our Georgia  and Armenia hubs .

Flinders Ranges, South Australia

Why now? Cool weather for walking.

The craggy, saw-toothed Flinders Ranges in South Australia  are venerable indeed. Formed over 600 million years, they’re home to some of the oldest multi-cellular fossils on earth – the region’s Nilpena Ediacara National Park, designated in 2021, is arguably the world’s richest and most intact paleontological site. Also, human activity here dates back 49,000 years, with Aboriginal stories seemingly woven around every rock and outcrop. August is a good time to plot your own Flinders walkabout: there’s more rain, but it fills the creeks and pools, attracting wildlife. Animals are more active during the cooler winter days, too – hikers might find themselves strolling with yellow-footed rock wallabies, emus, grey kangaroos and flocks of galahs. The rugged northern section of the 1200km (750-mile) Heysen Trail (which starts on the south coast) cuts through the region, finishing at Parachilna Gorge, winding via Mt Remarkable, Alligator Gorge and the crater-like bowl of Ikara (Wilpena Pound). Truly epic hiking country .

The Best Places to Travel in August

By Caitlin Morton

Best Places to Travel in August

Is there any month more tailor-made for a vacation than August? The peak of summer is the perfect time to jettison all 9-to-5 obligations and indulge in a trip, whether you’re soaking up the sun on an exclusive Mediterranean island or holing up in a bucolic corner of the Mid-Atlantic. Plus, with the E.U. opening up to U.S. tourists this summer and states lifting COVID restrictions, we’re more excited to book a flight than ever. If you’re hoping to squeeze in a vacation before Labor Day, here are nine of the best places to travel in August.

madeira portugal

Madeira, Portugal

This island, 300 miles west of Morocco, is synonymous with winemaking and wine drinking. The Madeira Wine Festival (August 29 through September 12) showcases how the islanders developed the unique oxidation process to create their trademark wine six centuries ago. There are events and celebrations throughout the island, but be sure to visit Cabo Girão, where the microclimate around the cliffs allowed Jesuits to cultivate malvasia grapes and develop the sweet malmsey wine. The vertigo-inducing skywalk here is the highest such installation in Europe, though it’s best to try it before imbibing too much.

Best Places to Travel in August Kilimanjaro Kenya

The Great Migration is one of the awe-inspiring natural spectacles on the planet, when more than 1.5 million wildebeest sweep through East Africa between July and October every year. In Kenya, the best place to watch the phenomenon is the Masai Mara National Reserve, with ample rivers (that’s where the real action takes place) and cliffs overlooking the savannah.

Set up shop at the 15-suite Angama Mara , which sits close to the Mara River and affords 180-degree views of the surrounding plains. Even if you miss some of the migration action, you'll be able to see elephant, buffalo, and giraffe from your suite, or take a Maasai-led walking safari to see even more wildlife.

Woodstock, Vermont

One of the most beautiful towns in America, Woodstock’s appeal extends far beyond fall foliage and craft beer. The city oozes New England charm in any season, which is clearly evidenced by the lovely and quaint Woodstock Inn & Resort . The 142-room hotel thrives in the summer, when the on-site garden boasts more than 200 varieties of produce that get sent directly to the property’s two restaurants.

And the seasonal delights don’t end there. Just down the road at the Billings Farm & Museum, the 20,000-square-foot Sunflower House will enter its third year in bloom this summer. Thousands of sunflowers (which reach peak bloom in mid-August) will be planted in a maze-like structure, ranging in height from 18 inches to a staggering 14 feet.

costa smeralda sardinia italy

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda is one of Europe’s most glamorous summer getaways, with stunning white sands and yacht-crammed waters off Porto Cervo. Lean into the luxe vibe by booking one of the suites at the Hotel Cala di Volpe , and remember to pack the kind of bikinis that were never designed to actually get wet for its ultra-exclusive beach club. The suites, decked out in whitewashed walls and Sardinian marble floors, are perfect for kicking your feet up between pool visits. At night, book dinner at one of the restaurants on Porto Cervo’s beloved Piazzetta—choose between the classic fish spot, Il Pescatore, or Novikov, an Asian fusion restaurant from owner and Russian restaurateur Arkady.

bonneville salt flats utah

Utah is renowned for its national parks (its state parks are pretty spectacular, too), but there are plenty of reasons to visit this summer outside of the obvious. (Depending on where you are, the temperatures range from 70 to 99 degrees during August.) Get your dose of thrills with an ATV ride around the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, with 2,000 acres of sand that turn pink as the sun begins to set. Or choose from ten zip-lines (one of which reaches a speed of 65 mph) at Deer Creek State Park.

If you prefer to watch the action from the sidelines, watch drivers try to break world records at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Bonneville Speed Week (August 7-13). Whatever type of activity you crave, Utah probably has it somewhere. While you're in the state, you might as well make a point to stay at the sensational Amangiri resort in Canyon Point: The remote location, food, views, and spa treatments are well worth a detour.

napa valley

Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is one of the best places to travel in August, corresponding with the region's harvest season (August through October). The crowds tend to be a bit denser during this time, but you can still have a luxurious, intimate vacation—if you know where to look. Start by setting your sights on the Four Seasons Resort Napa Valley, one of the most exciting new hotels of the summer. When it opens, it will be the only Napa property that sits on an active winery. Add to that a dedicated kids club and world-class spa, and you have yourself one stellar stay.

For a not-so-average tasting experience, book The Legacy Tour onboard the Napa Wine Train. Expect sparkling wine samples, a three-hour tour of the valley, and four-course gourmet meal.

minnesota state fair

Summer is the season of state fairs, and few states do the tradition justice better than Minnesota. The nation’s second-largest fair (after Texas, of course) was canceled in 2020, but Gov. Tim Walz is hopeful that this year “should be a pretty close to normal event.” And in this case, normal means outdoor beer festivals, classic car shows, Miranda Lambert and Tim McGraw concerts, and 500 food stands serving up all things deep-fried and skewered.

The fair takes place from August 26 to September 6 this year, giving you plenty of August wiggle room to explore nearby Minneapolis (about 15 minutes away from the fairgrounds in Falcon Heights), a city which only gets more interesting the longer you stay there.

north fork long island

North Fork, Long Island

Each summer, the North Fork of Long Island offers a welcome contrast to the hectic Hamptons on the southern spike. Instead of imported city glitz, it’s a countrified hideaway, mostly full of family farms, vineyards, and small towns filled with clapboard homes. While the Hamptons crowds struggle to find a spot on the beach, spend the month of August exploring the quiet charm of this charming area.

Southold’s Custer Observatory Institute hosts stargazing and meteor-spotting parties on Saturday nights, and you can try oyster-shucking at Greenport’s Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market. Most vineyards here boost their visitor offerings in summer, like Bedell Cellars , which has live music in its tap room on Sunday afternoons in August. Take the seven-minute ferry ride from Greenport to Shelter Island for a stay at The Chequit , a 37-room Victorian inn from 1872 that made our Hot List in 2016.

isla holbox mexico

Isla Holbox, Mexico

May through September is whale shark season in the Mexican Caribbean, when the magnificent beasts emerge in the warm waters between Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy every year. August is a particularly great month for whale sightings due to the amount of plankton in the water, which the whales gather to feed on.

This year, head to dreamy Isla Holbox to celebrate Whale Shark Day on August 30—no better time to try your hand at a once-in-a-lifetime whale shark dive. Eco-boutique hotel Las Nubes de Holbox is the only hotel adjacent to the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, and connects its guests to sustainable whale shark tours around the island’s stunning natural landscapes. Afterwards, relax at the Orquídea Spa with a salt bath or facial of organic Mexican products.

10 Best Places to Travel in August

This month, appreciate the beauty of the arts, nature, and world-renowned creations..

  • Copy Link copied

Picture your ideal summer. Is it heading to an idyllic island for some enriching R&R? Perhaps it’s hiking around an American wilderness where there are more animals than people? Or could it be a short-haul jaunt to a lesser-known corner of the Caribbean off-season?

Well, we’ve got you covered if you crave any of these trips for your summer vacation—and we’ve got seven more ideas, too, with our top picks for the best places to travel in August.

1. Sydney, Australia

August is great for: cheering on the Gals to greatness.

Last year, Australia and New Zealand won a joint bid to the host the Women’s Soccer World Cup, and the tournament takes place in these two nations starting in mid-July this year. By the second week of August, it’s quarter final time. The final itself will occur on August 20 at Sydney’s Stadium Australia, an 80,000-seater arena originally built as part of the capital’s hosting duties for the Olympics in 2000. Sydney will host 11 games in total, including Panama versus France on August 2.

If your interests skew more to culture, it’s an ideal time to come, too: This year is the 50th anniversary of Jørn Utzon’s masterpiece, the Sydney Opera House, whose gleaming, white, sail-inspired roof has become a shorthand for the entire country. The August roster of event s includes a showcase for Jessica Pratt, one of the highest profile homegrown sopranos, and 19th-century opera La Giaconda , anchored by German tenor Jonas Kaufmann.

The Park Hyatt has a worthy rival in the luxury space in this 192-room outpost of the Asian hotelier, which opened in March in the former Department of Education building downtown. Opt for a room on one of the newly added, higher floors for the best views.

How to get to Sydney

If you’re heading solely to Sydney, there are direct nonstop flights from LAX on United, Delta, and American, plus a canny bonus from HNL on Hawaiian. If you want to take in some other matches, including those in New Zealand, consider the Qantas route from JFK to AKL, which started in June and subsequently allows you to connect across the Tasman Sea to Australia.

2. Denali, Alaska

White mountains are a backdrop against orange, green, and yellow land.

The Great American Outdoors Act is dedicating $9.5 billion over a five-year period to fund national parks and public lands, like Alaska’s Denali National Park & Preserve.

August is great for: huskies, blueberries, and hiking.

Though you’re not likely to see the aurora borealis here this month—it’s too bright in summer for the phenomenon to occur as easily as it does for the rest of the year—there are ample reasons to visit Alaska’s Denali National Park & Preserve right now (especially on August 4, which is a national park fee-free-day in honor of the anniversary of the Great Outdoors Act from 2020).

The 6-million-acre site, anchored by the 20,310-foot-high namesake mountain, is ideal for whitewater rafting down the Nenana River or off-trail hiking. It’s the only national park with its own kennel of 30 sled dogs , and rangers hold demos daily over the summer, giving you a chance to tour the huskies’ kennels and see the traditional Alaskan mode of transport in action.

August is also when the town of Healy, 30 miles from the park, hosts its annual Blueberry Festival : Expect concerts, family fun, and, of course, plenty of blueberry-powered treats.

Where to stay: Denali Park Village

Book now: Denali Park Village

Denali Park Village ’s lodges and cabins sit in a valley along the Nenana River; there are trails to hike and explore right on property, or head to the Miner’s Village, where you can try your luck at panning for gold.

How to get to Denali

Book a flight on Alaska Airlines to Fairbanks, the closest airport; from there, it’s a 125-mile drive through the rugged countryside to reach Denali.

3. Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i

Left: young woman performs Tahitian dance at the Heiva I Kauai August 1, 2010 in Kapa'a Beach Park, on Kauai. Right: Na Pali Coast from the Kalalau Trail in Kauai

From the Heiva I Kaua‘i festival to the Kalalau Trail, there are plenty of natural and cultural attractions worth visiting in Kaua‘i during August.

Photos by VDV and RaiPhoto/Shutterstock

August is great for: pan-Polynesian celebrations.

The connection of Hawai‘i westward to Polynesia is at the forefront this month during the two-day festival Heiva I Kaua`i 2023 (August 5–6 this year). It draws Tahitian dance and drumming groups from around the world, including the USA and Japan, to perform here. Think of the thrillingly rhythmic tradition like a folk break dancing, where the steps and routines change on a whim in response to the thunderous drum beats, which stutter and syncopate unpredictably. The various contests are accompanied, of course, by stalls selling Tahitian foods and souvenirs that nod to its notable crafts, including the black pearl.

On Kaua‘i this month there’s superb fishing, too: It’s prime season for the likes of blue marlin and tuna— Ohana is a reliable operator for charters. The weather is a plus whatever you’re doing, since it’s dry season with rainfall of less than two inches all month on average. That also it makes hiking around the Garden Isle easier than in the rainier months. Try a scenic half-day hike on Kalalau Trail ( reservations required ) or the family friendly Kuilau Ridge Trail.

Where to stay: Timbers Kaua‘i at Hokuala

Book now: Timbers Kaua‘i at Hokuala

The ideal perch for a family visit is one of the three- or four-bedroom homes on this 450-acre resort complex, which also has an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Course on site.

How to get to Kaua‘i

West coasters, of course, have the easiest access here. Delta, United, and Hawaiian, among others, fly directly to Lihue from Los Angeles, while Alaska has flights from Portland, Seattle, and San Diego.

4. Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi city skyline

Though many people head to Kenya for its wildlife, Nairobi is one of the best places to experience some of the country’s culture.

August is great for: a come-one-come-all fusion dance fest.

Consider coming to Africa for an urban adventure instead of simply going straight on safari this summer: From August 11 to 14, the Morabeza Kizomba Festival takes place in Nairobi, Kenya ’s capital.

The dance-and-music tradition it celebrates is pan-African, though kizomba originated among the regions colonized by the Portuguese—hence most lyrics are in that language, and the dance style has a Latin accent, too, owing a clear debt to the tango, albeit with less rigid choreography. Expect more than 20 dance workshops, live music concerts, and themed parties. Afternoon socials have become increasingly popular in Kenya in recent years, putting Afro-Latin dances like kizomba or bachata at the center of an evening socializing.

The grande dame of hotels in Kenya’s capital is a hideaway from the bustle, with its 45 rooms—all at least 850 square feet—are set in the house’s own vibrant gardens. Make sure to be back in time for sundowners on the terrace.

How to get to Kenya

Kenya Airways runs a comfortably outfitted Boeing 787 on its direct, nonstop flight from JFK to NBO: The almost 14-hour jaunt operates daily during the summer. The airline is a fellow member of the SkyTeam alliance, which means it seamlessly connects to Delta’s domestic network.

5. Budapest, Hungary

Chain bridge on Danube River in Budapest

Budapest’s Széchenyi Chain Bridge was the first bridge across the Danube in Hungary.

August is great for: a saint’s day, speed records, and saying Happy 150th Birthday.

This year, the city marks its 150th anniversary—or rather, it celebrates the merger of the once stand-alone cities of Buda and Pest (plus the now-forgotten Obuda) into a single metropolis, intended to be a fitting counterpart for the glittering Vienna, the other main city in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Today, pause on the main bridge, looking east and west. Buda, on the Danube’s western flank, is hilly, with winding streets and a quieter, more residential vibe, while the eastern areas, once Pest, are low-lying and flat, with most of the commercial elements of the modern city (think shops, restaurants, and nightlife).

August is also when the city celebrates its patron saint, St. Istvan (better known as Stephen) on August 20: It’s a national holiday, aka the day of the new bread as a nod to harvest season. Expect plenty of July 4th-style celebrations, including impressive firework displays. The same week, Budapest will also play host to the World Outdoor Athletics Championships, the third largest sporting event in the world . The city has just unveiled a newly installed, nine-lane track intended to help athletes maximize their speeds—pick up tickets to see world record attempts at everything from the 100 meters to relays.

Where to stay: Matild Palace

Book now: Matild Palace

One of two wedding cake–like palaces sitting close to the Danube’s main bridge, this maximalist hotel is a glorious addition (the blue- and gold-tiled bathrooms are particularly delightful) to the city’s luxury hotel scene.

How to get to Hungary

There are no nonstop flights to Budapest from the USA. The cheapest option is likely to fly to London and connect on a low-cost carrier for the short-haul hop—it’s about a 2.5-hour flight on the likes of Ryanair and Wizz Air.

Windwardside of Saba: red-roofed white buildings among green hills

The five-square-mile island of Saba is part of the Caribbean Netherlands.

August is great for: adventuring in the Caribbean’s quiet corner.

This five-square mile island is an intriguing alternative to many nearby Caribbean destinations that aim squarely at fly-and-flop travelers lured solely by a luxe hotel and a sandy beach.

Saba (say it SAY-buh) is an outdoorsy destination and one that’s particularly appealing to divers, since its volcanic origins have created otherworldly undersea landscapes. When magma pushed through the sea floor, for example, towers of rock reached hundreds of feet underwater, surprisingly close to the surface. There are two dozen self-guided hiking trails, too: Try the 1,000-plus-steps hike up the Mount Scenery Trail—the almost 3,000-foot summit is the highest spot in the entire Netherlands Kingdom. (This island remains part of that country, which commandeered the rock in the 1640s.)

Come this month in particular for Create & Learn , a festival that runs for two weeks starting on August 24 and is operated by a local nonprofit; it’s intended to share traditional arts and crafts skills with everyone—whether local children or curious visitors. It’s held four times each year, and each iteration focuses on different niches. This August, come to learn about painting, pottery, and knife sheathing.

Where to stay: Julianna’s Hotel

Book now: Julianna’s Hotel

The recently renovated, four-room annex known as the Captain’s Suite is the pick of the crashpads here; the rooms open onto a private terrace with superb Caribbean Sea views.

How to get to Saba

The best way to reach the island is via St. Martin (SXM), which has direct flights from MIA, CLT, ATL, JFK, and more. Then it’s a 12-minute flight to Saba on WinAir, or a 90-minute ferry ride across to the island—nervous fliers should opt for the latter, as the ultra-short runway here can made touchdown a white-knuckle adventure.

7. Tokushima Prefecture, Japan

People parading on street, wearing blue tops, pink skirts, and straw hats. They all have their hands up in unison.

Japan’s Awa Odori is the largest dance festival in the country.

August is great for: a glimpse into Japan’s creative traditions that goes beyond Kabuki.

The Awa Odori festival focuses on the Japanese dance tradition that emerged via the Buddhist custom of honoring ancestral spirits—the name derives from the feudal moniker for this region, Awa, and dance, or odori.

Each year, from August 12 to 15, more than 1 million visitors descend on Tokushima on the eastern end of Shikoku, one of the quieter corners of the country, best known otherwise as the hub of Japan’s indigo-dying tradition. Come to watch groups of dancers and musicians, known as ren , roaming through the streets in costumes based on the yukata, or summer kimono; they chant and dance to the accompaniment of lutes and drums.

Most of the activity takes place in the evenings on streets that have been pedestrianized downtown for the event: There are paid, semi-professional performances on some stages, as well as enthusiastic amateurs, plus the usual smattering of food and souvenir stalls ranged around. Look in particular for the ona adori groups, or women’s dance troupes, distinguished by their fan-shaped braided hats, or amigasa; these were traditionally worn by ninjas, as the wide brims make identity-concealing much easier—a detail that the dancers playfully leverage.

Where to stay: Hotel Iyaonsen

Book now: Hotel Iyaonsen

No one should come to Japan without spending a little time idling in one of its hot springs . This hilltop Tokushima hotel has a bathing complex handily located down in the valley nearby, accessible by cable car.

How to get to Japan

Haneda (HND) is now the main international touchdown in Tokyo, replacing Narita (NRT). There is regular, direct service there on all the major legacy carriers as well as Japan Airlines. It’s just over an hour to reach Tokushima (TKS) on a domestic connection from there.

8. North Fork, New York

Places like Hallock’s Cider Mill in Mattituck are what make North Fork so charming.

August is great for: an alternative to the hectic Hamptons.

Forget the Hamptons, especially in August, when the crowds are thickest and the vibe loses its oh-so-exclusive edge. Opt instead for an alternative, the East End through the looking glass: the North Fork , a countrified cousin that’s more cut-off jeans and boots than hot pants and stilettos.

One of its major assets for visitors: the more than three dozen wineries here. Head to 300-acre Pindar Vineyards for Sunset Fridays this summer, where pizza will be served at sundown, or the family-owned Macari , a 500-acre winery known for its superb sauvignon blanc. Bedell Cellars was founded by the late movie producer and avid art collector Michael Lynne (hence the arresting, artwork-emblazoned labels).

Amble round the backroads and pick up fresh produce from more than 100 farm stands—the soil out here, thanks to glacial movements millennia ago, is particularly fertile, producing standout summer crops. Mattituck’s Harbes Family Farm has a kids’ petting zoo, and the beaches, like Orient Beach State Park and Goldsmith’s Inlet , are quieter and more appealing than any oceanfront spit in the Hamptons this month.

Where to stay: The Shoals

Book now: The Shoals The year-old property calls itself a “boatel” with 20 rooms and 20 slips, allowing guests to arrive by water or explore the Long Island Sound. The private outdoor showers for each room are a thoughtful touch.

How to get to the North Fork

Budget around three hours to get out here by train from NYC—you’ll need to change at least once—or check out the Hampton Jitney service; it takes around 2.5 hours without traffic.

9. Engadin, Switzerland

St. Moritz, high alpine resort town in the Engadine, viewed from Lake St. Moritz

Come to the Upper Engadin area and hear music throughout the churches and hotels of places like St. Moritz.

August is great for: operas and arias amid the Alps.

Most people flock to this corner of Switzerland in the winter, for the ski-and-be-seen spot of St. Moritz, but it’s a shame that they overlook it for much of the rest of the year. Running from July 29 until August 11, the Engadin Festival is an annual classical music celebration that’s been running since 1941 here.

The concerts that form part of its program aren’t limited to conventional venues, though: The event commandeers everything from churches to old riding halls around the region for its shows. Programming is equally diverse and inclusive, ranging from solo recitals, chamber music formations, and orchestral concerts with soloists. This year’s performers include mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti, cellist Daniel Müller-Schott, and pianist Dmitro Chony.

Where to stay: Grand Hotel Kronenhof

Book now: Grand Hotel Kronenhof

The 112-room hotel in the village of Pontresina is an unapologetic celebration of old-fashioned Alpine luxury—think gilded chandeliers, ceiling frescoes, and comfy, overstuffed armchairs.

How to get to Switzerland

There’s a direct, nonstop flight from JFK to Zurich (ZRH) on the Swiss national airline, plus service from SFO on United. From there, take one of the ultra-reliable, sleekly efficient local trains to the Upper Engadin.

10. Edinburgh, Scotland

Bird's-eye-view of city, three people looking at it from a hilly distance.

This August, Edinburgh is putting a spotlight on arts and culture with its Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

August is great for: spotting the next Oscar winner making a live debut.

Think of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as a combination of Broadway, Saturday Night Live, and the Groundlings—a comedy-skewing live performance fiesta with more than 3,000 shows taking place across 250 venues over almost four weeks (from August 4 to 28 this year). The dizzying full schedule is constantly updated, so make sure to download its app for the easiest planning.

By far the world’s largest performing arts festival, the Fringe was established soon after World War II. Since then, it’s proved a spotting ground for future superstars at the earliest stages of their careers. It cost intrepid festivalgoers just a few pounds to see the likes of the late Alan Rickman (aka Professor Snape from the Harry Potter film series), Mr. Bean actor Rowan Atkinson, and comedian-turned-chat show host Graham Norton made their debuts here in the past. Many of this year’s emerging talents will likely follow in their fame-finding footsteps.

In particular, look for the winner of the Edinburgh Comedy Award (formerly known as the Perrier), which crowns the standout from this year’s line-up—Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, and Nanette breakout Hannah Gadsby are all past winners.

Where to stay: Gleneagles Townhouse

Book now: Gleneagles Townhouse

A onetime bank in the historic center of Edinburgh re-emerged after a gut renovation as a swanky city outpost of the century-old golf resort. Head to the rooftop bar on a warm evening for killer cocktails and views out over St. Andrew’s Square.

How to get to Scotland

Both United and Delta offer direct, nonstop flights to Edinburgh from the USA—the former from EWR, the latter from JFK.
