Scream VI: release date, review, trailer, cast and everything we know about the horror sequel

Ghostface is set to return in the sixth entry of the Scream franchise.

Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega in Scream VI

Who's ready for another Scream movie? Yes, Scream , aka Scream (2022) or Scream 5 , came out in January 2022, but it proved to be a favorite with both audiences and critics (read What to Watch's Scream review ). So it should be little surprise that a sequel was quickly announced and fast-tracked. As a result, audiences are going to get Scream VI a little more than a year after the most recent addition to the long-running horror franchise.

The first Scream came out in 1996, directed by Wes Craven and starring Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette and others. There were three sequels before this latest Scream — dubbed a "requel" (reboot/sequel) by its meta script —came out. Does that make Scream 6 a requel sequel? (Sorry.)

Anyway, here is everything we know so far about Scream 6 . FYI, some SPOILERS ahead as we have to mention a few details to the plot of Scream (2022) .

Scream VI release date

Scream VI hits theaters on March 10. That puts the new movie out about 14 months after Scream (2022) , which premiered in movie theaters on January 14, 2022.

Paramount Plus and Spyglass Media have announced a special fan event taking place on Thursday, March 9, where people can be the first to see the movie in 3D. Tickets for the fan event and normal screenings of Scream VI are now available right here .

Scream VI trailer

The full trailer for Scream VI has arrived, promising a new type of Ghostface stalking our main characters. Check out the full trailer and the previously released teaser trailer directly below:

Scream VI is also going to have a spot during the Super Bowl. But you can check it out here first:

Then, just days ahead of the movie's release, Paramount released a final trailer with a number of quotes from critics praising the movie, including one quote calling it "the perfect movie." Check out that trailer right here:

Scream 6 cast

The survivors of Scream (2022) are set to return for another bout with Ghostface, as Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega are all set to reprise their roles.

Barrera played the new main character, Sam, who was revealed to be the biological daughter of original Scream killer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich); Ortega played Sam's sister Tara (though she isn't related to Billy). Brown and Gooding also have connections to the original movies, as their twin siblings, Mindy and Chad, are the niece and nephew of Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy).

Joining the new generation of characters is going to be a blast from the past, as Hayden Panettiere is set to reprise her Scream 4 character, Kirby Reed, in the latest movie.

As far as other legacy Scream characters, Neve Campbell is not going to appear in Scream VI , but Courtney Cox is set to return for the next chapter.

Other new cast members include Dermot Mulroney ( My Best Friend's Wedding ), Tony Revolori ( The Grand Budapest Hotel ), Samara Weaving ( Ready or Not ) Jack Champion ( Avatar: The Way of Water ), Henry Czerny ( Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning ), Liana Liberato ( A Million Little Things ), Devyn Nekoda ( Ginny & Georgia ) and Josh Segarra ( She-Hulk: Attorney at Law )

Scream VI plot

Scream VI follows the four survivors of 2022's Scream as they must face Ghostface once again. Here is the official synopsis:

"Following the latest Ghostface killings, the four survivors leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter."

From the poster, we learn that the characters are heading to New York City.

Scream VI reviews — what the critics are saying

The word is in on Scream VI . WTW's own Scream VI review says the movie delivers with plenty of satisfying, gory kills and further building out its new "Core 4," but acknowledges the meta-commentary angle of the franchise may have been impacted by the short turnaround between movies.

The Scream VI Rotten Tomatoes score has most critics giving it a thumbs up, as it scores a "Fresh" 78% as of March 8.

Scream VI director

After Wes Craven directed the first four Scream movies, Scream (2022) was directed by someone other than the legendary horror figure — Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet. The pair are going to return for Scream 6 .

In addition, Scream (2022) writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are back to co-write the new movie.

How long is Scream VI

The runtime for Scream VI clocks in at two hours and three minutes.

What is Scream VI rated?

Scream VI has a rating of R in the US and 18 in the UK for "strong bloody violence and language throughout, and brief drug use."

How to watch Scream movies online

All five Scream movies are available to stream on Paramount Plus, while they are also available to rent online.

Everything We Know

Everything we know about scream vi, the survivors return, but they've got new allies, a new home, and a new emphasis on action and spectacular stunts. we've got all the details on the latest installment..

scream 6 press tour

TAGGED AS: Horror , movies

When you’ve already done five increasingly meta and self-referential horror movies, where do you have left to go? Well, New York City, apparently. Just as Jason Voorhees did 34 years ago , the Scream franchise takes Manhattan in the upcoming Scream VI , a direct sequel to 2022’s Scream (which was technically Scream V , but opted not to have the Roman numeral designation to play into the whole “requel” theme that was so integral to the story).

By now, we all know that the point of any Scream movie is that it’s part whodunit and part commentary on the cliches and tropes of the horror genre, so its movies are always going to go in for a little misdirection and some knowing winks at the fact that it knows that you know where this is all going, but getting there is 90% of the fun. The first trailer sets the stage. We’re not in Woodsboro anymore.

So without knowing what twists and turns await us, here’s what we know so far about Scream VI .

The Survivors of Scream (2022) Are Back for More

Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding in Scream VI (2023)

The new movie follows sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter ( Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega ) who, obviously, made it out of the last movie in once piece (despite Tara seemingly being earmarked for a Drew Barrymore-esque quick exit right in the beginning). Sam’s bloodline connection to original Scream (1996) killer Billy Loomis ( Skeet Ulrich ) will once again be a major story point this time around as well – is she just a victim, or will her father’s dark side manifest itself? (Note she says, “There’s a darkness inside of me” in the trailer). Twins Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin ( Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding ) also follow the Carpenter sister to the big city, and tabloid TV journalist-turned-best-selling-author Gale Weathers ( Courteney Cox ) returns to her NYC home turf to once again get caught up in the mayhem.

The Team Behind the Scenes Returns As Well

William Sherak, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Kevin Williamson, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella on the set of Scream (2022)

The entire crew behind Scream (2022) are back, too. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett ( Ready or Not ) are once again at the helm, alongside producers William Sherak , James Vanderbilt , and Paul Neinstein . Vanderbilt also co-wrote the script with Guy Busick , like they did for the last installment. The whole creative team returning combined with the fact that these sequels are coming out in much quicker succession than previous Scream films (which usually had a few years’ gap time in between) gives Scream VI the feeling of being a more direct and urgent continuation of the story.

Unfortunately, Neve Campbell Has Tapped Out

Neve Campbell in Scream (2022)

Despite returning for Scream V , original star Neve Campbell won’t be making the trek to the Big Apple. Sidney Prescott is still very much alive, but Campbell has cited contractual drama as the reason she won’t be joining the hunt for the latest Ghostface. The actress released a statement explaining the situation to fans, saying, “Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film. As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream . I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

…But Hayden Panettiere Is Back In

Hayden Panettiere in Scream VI (2023)

What’s something horror movies have always taught us? If you don’t see a character’s final breath, you can’t ever assume they’re actually dead. Despite appearing to be killed in Scream 4, we never got conclusive proof that Hayden Panettiere’ s Kirby Reed was a goner. An Easter Egg in Scream V teased her fate – While Richie Kirsch ( Jack Quaid ) is watching a YouTube video dissecting the Stab films (the film-within-a-film series based on the events of Scream ), one of the related videos on the side reads “Interview with Woodsboro Survivor Kirby Reed.” Reed will make her official return to the series in Scream VI , joining in the city-wide hunt for the new killer(s).

There’s Plenty of New Blood

Josh Segarra, Samara Weaving, Tony Revolori, and Dermot Mulroney

(Photo by Jon Kopaloff, Valerie Macon, Cindy Ord, David M. Benett/Getty Images)

Scream VI’ s cast is rounded out by a mix of fresh-faced newcomers and veteran talent new to the Scream franchise. The cast includes Josh Segarra ( She-Hulk: Attorney at Law ), Tony Revolori ( Spider-Man: No Way Home ), Devyn Nekoda ( Sneakerella ), Liana Liberato ( Novitiate ), and Jack Champion ( Avatar: The Way of Water ). More familiar faces include Dermot Mulroney , who appears to be playing an NYPD detective, Henry Czerny , and directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s old Ready or Not leading lady, Samara Weaving .

The Story Relocates to New York City

Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega in Scream VI (2023)

As noted above,  Scream VI moves the action to the Big Apple, as the Carpenter sisters and the Meeks-Martin twins have attempted to leave their traumatic experiences in Woodsboro behind and start afresh. Tara and the twins are now college students, while Sam is juggling jobs, and though they are now closer than they’ve ever been, all of them continue to struggle with moving on from their past in their own ways. That’s when Ghostface shows up and throws a wrench into that healing process.

Setting the film in New York was a deliberate decision on the part of the filmmakers. As Executive Producer Chad Villella explains, ““The one analogy we always use that if Scream V  was the greatest hits, this one is the punk rock B side of the Scream franchise. We brought some action to it and really ramped up the intensity, which makes the movie more fun, makes the city more prevalent, and makes you feel like you’re in a different place and watching a different Scream , but still getting a genuine Scream movie at its core.”

It’s An Action Flick Hidden in a Horror Movie

The Ghostface Killer in Scream VI (2023)

While  Scream VI will, of course, have all the requisite chills and whodunit elements that we’ve come to associate with the franchise, one way the film will differ from its predecessors is that its big set pieces will be a lot more action-focused. The fight scenes have been elaborately choreographed with an emphasis on spectacular stunts, and as producer William Sherak put it, “We hid an action movie in a horror movie.”

The Meta Jokes Will Be Amped Up

Judging from the first teaser trailer, at least part of Scream VI will take place over Halloween, which will add to the chaos since you’ll have all of Manhattan running around (and strap-hanging on the subway) looking like potential Ghostfaces. In the clips we’ve seen so far, not only is the Scream  mask apparently very popular (we see several different Ghostfaces on the subway), but look around and you’ll see subway riders dressed as Hellraiser’ s Pinhead, The Babadook , and, of course, Friday the 13th’ s Jason Voorhees.

This May Be a Much Different Ghostface

It’s a point hammered home several times in the trailer. Kirby Reed – who has now apparently become a professional Ghostface hunter – says “this isn’t like any other Ghostface.” Later, Ghostface himself says, “There’s never been one like me, Gale” while terrorizing Weathers. In between, we get brief glimpses of what Gale calls “a shrine” but what almost looks like Tony Stark’s lab if he was super into black robes instead of Iron Man armor. So what does it all mean? They’re not likely to go the “sicko fanboy/fangirl” route again (maybe), and this killer appears to be well-financed (do you know what the rent would be like for a giant, personal Ghostface museum?). It’s safe to say the characters really don’t know what they’re up against this time.

But His Voice Will Be the Same

Dermot Mulroney in Scream VI (2023)

Like Anthony Daniels’ C-3PO across all the various Star Wars movies and TV shows, there is something comforting about a familiar voice that brings consistency despite new casts, new stories, and new locations. Roger L. Jackson, who has been the “Do you like scary movies?” voice on the phone since the original 1996 Scream and in every installment since (he even voiced the character in the 2019 television series Scream: Resurrection ), will be back making prank calls yet again.

Scream VI opens in theaters on March 10, 2023.

Share All sharing options for: Scream VI’s latest meta twist: justifying the whole Scream franchise

Scream VI feels like a confident turning point for a long-running self-referential slasher series, though what that series is becoming remains tantalizingly unclear. For close to a quarter-century, the Scream sequels were playing defense. Director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson had a back-to-back one-two punch with the success of the first two movies, but Scream 3 was delayed and met middling reactions from the fans. Eleven years later, with Scream 4 , Craven and Williamson tried to wrap their heads around a new generation thirsting for social-media notoriety, and those younger audiences didn’t seem to care much.

Another 11 years after that, 2022’s newly rechristened Scream addressed the proliferation of legacy sequels in the horror genre and beyond. It was a hit with audiences and critics, which meant the inevitable sequel, 2023’s Scream VI , is the first genuinely fast-tracked Scream since Scream 2 was rushed to theaters. Suddenly, Scream is an A-list horror series again. Or in the corporate parlance winkingly applied in Scream VI , it’s now a franchise , a never-ending cycle of fan service subject to its own set of rules and conventions.

But when Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), niece of the early films’ dearly departed movie geek Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy), holds court to deliver a hyper-nerdy treatise on the rules of franchises, the material isn’t as rich as her explanation of “requels” (or legacy sequels) from the previous movie. Her vague guidelines for franchises — particularly the idea that new franchise entries must go bigger to top the previous films — aren’t that different from the sequel rules Randy laid out back in Scream 2 .

Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) and Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) sit together on a stage with their legs dangling off the edge while mannequins in grey, hooded robes loom behind them in Scream VI

This being a Scream movie, it’s possible that this rehash of the 1997 movie is another wink at horror audiences, a nod to how Scream VI can assert itself as a major franchise entry while still eventually circling back to familiar ’90s slashings. It’s also entirely possible that directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, are already growing weary of film-culture commentary. Two different Scream VI characters voice this theory: “The movies don’t matter,” one says. Ghostface himself puts it even more bluntly: “Who gives a fuck about movies?”

The answer to this rhetorical question is pretty much just Mindy. For Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), daughter of original killer Billy Loomis and survivor of the 2022 Scream , this stuff is too real. She’s still processing the trauma of her boyfriend plotting to murder her, and feeling fiercely protective of her little sister, Tara (Jenna Ortega), as they embark on a fresh start in New York City. Tara just wants to have some college fun, while Sam fumes over internet rumors that she was the real villain of the previous film’s events, victimizing her psycho ex — a clever riff on the way parasocial relationships often form online. Mindy and her brother, Chad (Mason Gooding), have also graduated in New York, and the group’s social circle broadens to include Mindy’s girlfriend, Anika (Devyn Nekoda), Sam and Tara’s roommate, Quinn (Liana Liberato), and Chad’s roommate, Ethan (Jack Champion).

Naturally, these new characters, along with everyone else in the movie, turn into suspects when someone in a Ghostface mask starts slashing people up. From there, the film launches a series of frequent (and frequently ridiculous) hairpin turns. There’s a twisty variation on the classic Scream cold open, featuring some familiar faces, though not franchise regulars. There are fewer legacy characters than last time: Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) is the only returning cast member from the original three movies. But don’t think of this as a soft reboot, not with Scream 4 fan fave Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) back in action.

Siblings Tara and Sam Carpenter (Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera) flee in panic at night in front of some supposed New York buildings that really look like a cheap soundstage in Scream VI

In spite of the game attempts at maintaining and enriching five previous films’ worth of continuity, there’s a sense that Scream VI is casting about for what the franchise might look like in a culture where moviegoing doesn’t hold the same place of mass-audience supremacy it once did. Cross-media franchises don’t necessarily dominate cultural conversation anymore, but the filmmakers obviously still love scary movies. The film’s best sequence, a Halloween subway ride where the heroes cast suspicious eyes on dozens of menacingly costumed NYC citizens (including several in Ghostface masks, naturally), is packed with visual references to genre classics.

They also make sure to include a clip of Jason Takes Manhattan , the Friday the 13th series trip to New York that notoriously expends much of its running time on a boat, rather than the city streets. (Carrying on a piece of that tradition, Scream VI was mostly and obviously not shot in New York.) Horror fans will have fun at this film. At the same time, the filmmakers — a collaborative team collectively known as Radio Silence — have crafted more of a jump-scare action movie than an atmospheric horror-thriller, not unlike their 2019 horror-comedy Ready or Not .

To be fair, the Scream movies have never been the kind of psychological slow-burners Tara claims she loves in the 2022 Scream . But Scream VI particularly emphasizes fights and chases, with a Terminator-like Ghostface whose stabbing power seems especially vicious. (To combat this power-up, his victims have mysteriously become more adept than ever at surviving gnarly, repeated wounds.) There are advantages to this approach. Scream VI is more streamlined than the slightly scattered fifth movie, with the established and extremely likable “core four” of new characters fully taking center stage. The satirical stuff isn’t as funny or pointed as the previous film’s riffs on toxic fandom, but the film is a better showcase for Sam and Tara as actual characters. Barrera, with her sleepy-eyed angst over her murderous family history, and Ortega, with her irresistible wariness, make a fine pair of neo-gothic siblings stuck relying on each other.

Ghostface, the black-robed, white-masked killer of the Scream franchise, runs after someone against backdrop of white scrims held up by black scaffolding in Scream VI

The family bond is what the movie eventually settles on to drive home its themes, pushing the story further away from movie-world commentary. Again, maybe this is meant to reflect the diminishment of cinema at a time when so many movies are treated as content-mill distractions. “It’s all about true-crime limited series these days,” Gale laments about her inability to sell movie rights to her previous book (though this movie’s portrait of NYC law enforcement, removed from the small-town folksiness of Woodsboro, is amusingly preposterous). The movie briefly touches upon cultural legacies, forever franchises, weirdo collectors, and fandom again, but none of it really sticks.

And the fate of much-hyped returnee Kirby might provide a chilling warning to Sam and Tara: It’s neat to see Panettiere again, but her somewhat awkward role as a hotshot FBI agent shows how difficult it can be to square youthful slasher-movie heroes with lived-in real-world experience. The Scream series may not be equipped for a transition into more character-driven plotting.

Is this a problem? While viewers are mid-movie, not especially. Like the other Scream sequels in general, this one makes for a zippy Saturday night at the movies, and for now, it’s still easy to imagine some characters returning for another go-round in a year or two. (Any franchise that perpetuates Jenna Ortega’s scream-queen reign should get a pass to continue.) But fans looking for a definitive explanation of how this non-supernatural slasher will outfox the era of the forever franchise, where nothing stays dead no matter how many people get killed, will come away empty-handed. Where 2022’s Scream showed how the series could keep adapting and changing to fit new cinematic trends, this one hints at how unsustainable franchise maintenance can feel over the long term, even for a series that’s enjoying its deserved resurgence in creativity and popularity. Suddenly, the Scream movies feel like they’re back playing defense again.

Scream VI opens in theaters on March 10.

Scream 6 - Everything You Need To Know

Ghostface hunting

Do you like scary movies? If you do, then you probably love the "Scream" franchise . Released in 1996, the original "Scream" took horror to new meta levels, reinvigorated the dying slasher genre, and introduced us to iconic characters like Sidney Prescott, Dewey Riley, and the knife-wielding Ghostface. The movie became the 13th highest-grossing film of the year, earned praise from critics like Roger Ebert, and kicked off a killer franchise that's still going strong — and getting meta with it — all these years later.

In fact, the sixth installment in the series slashed its way onto theater screens on March 10, 2023. With a runtime of 2 hours and 3 minutes, it's the longest entry in the franchise, but does it compare to earlier installments — especially the 2022 "requel" that brought the series back to life and set up the events of part six? Did any of the cast members from the fifth film return, and what did critics and audiences think about Ghostface's latest murder spree? Well, if you think you've got what it takes to survive, read on for everything you need to know about "Scream 6."

What is the plot of Scream 6?

In 2022's "Scream," we were introduced to half-sisters Tara and Sam Carpenter, the latter of whom reveals she's the daughter of Billy Loomis — one-half of the original Ghostface duo. Obviously, that's quite a lot to deal with, especially when a new Ghostface shows up and is dead-set on hacking Sam and her friends to pieces. Following the rules of a reboot sequel, aka a "requel," Tara, Sam, and friends Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin make it out of the movie alive, along with long-time final girl Sidney Prescott and the pistol-packing Gale Weathers (RIP poor Dewey Riley).

Of course, there's no rest for the weary, and that's especially true in the world of "Scream." The new installment moves from Woodsboro to New York, with our young heroes from the fifth film looking to escape their bloody past and find a new start. But move over, Jason Voorhees — this time, Ghostface is taking Manhattan, and Tara, Sam, Mindy, and Chad (the "core four") will have to join forces with intrepid reporter Gale Weathers and previous Ghostface survivor Kirby Reed if they're going to make it through the Big Apple alive. Only, this particular slasher seems even more violent than the previous Ghostface killers, and he's not afraid of ditching his trademark knife for the occasional firearm.

Who is starring in Scream 6?

Okay, let's address the elephant in the room — or rather, the final girl not in the room. There are two mainstays of the "Scream" franchise: Ghostface and Sidney Prescott. While various actors have donned the twisted ghost mask, Neve Campbell is the one and only Sidney, defeating masked murderers and overcoming serious trauma again and again. Sidney survived the fifth film, but we're sorry to report that Campbell doesn't reprise the role in part six.

Speaking with People , Campbell revealed the paycheck she was being offered for the film was insulting, explaining, "I did not feel that what I was being offered equated to the value that I bring to this franchise and have brought to this franchise for 25 years. ... I honestly don't believe that if I were a man and had done five installments of a huge blockbuster franchise over 25 years, that the number that I was offered would be the number that would be offered to a man."

Sticking with her guns, Campbell refused to star in "Scream 6." However, Courteney Cox is back in action as Gale Weathers, and she's joined by another vet from the franchise. Hayden Panettiere is back as Kirby Reed, who evidently survived her seemingly fatal stab wound in "Scream 4." Of course, they're joined by 2022 stars Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding as Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad, respectively.

As for newcomers to the series, you can expect to see both scream queen Samara Weaving ("Ready or Not," "The Babysitter") and Tony Revolori of "Spider-Man" and "Grand Budapest Hotel" fame. They're be joined by the likes of "Mission: Impossible's" Henry Czerny and "My Best Friend's Wedding's" Dermot Mulroney, along with Jack Champion ("Avatar: The Way of Water") Liana Liberato ("The Best of Me"), Devyn Nekoda ("Ginny & George"), and Josh Segarra ("Arrow"). And while we won't spoil who's wearing the Ghostface mask, we know who'll provide that chilling voice — "Scream" OG Roger L. Jackson. Plus, you can expect to see ghostly visions of Billy Loomis, played by original actor Skeet Ulrich.

Who directed Scream 6?

Don't mess with success. 2022's "Scream" was a hit with critics and at the box office, so why mess around with that formula? You don't, and that's why Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett returned to direct "Scream 6." Working with producer Chad Villella, these three are known collectively as Radio Silence, and in addition to 2022's "Scream," they've honed their horror chops on the anthology horror flick "Southbound," the "10/31/98" segment in "V/H/S," and the hilarious demonic thriller "Ready or Not," starring Samara Weaving.

So what did Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett hope to achieve with "Scream 6?" Speaking with NME , Gillett explained their goals for the flick, saying, "Part of our assignment on 'Scream 5' was to play the greatest hits, to really show that we were part of a long lineage of characters. With 'Scream 6,' we wanted to subvert that warm blanket and make something that's grittier and rawer. ... It's relentless and really visceral."

Who wrote and produced Scream 6?

As Ghostface himself might menacingly say over the phone — name the screenwriters of 2022's "Scream." Did you guess James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick? Correct. These two writers collaborated to help revive the franchise, and they teamed up again for "Scream 6." However, they had quite a few titles under their respective belts before they found themselves in the bloody world of Woodsboro.

Previously, Busick co-wrote the script for "Ready or Not," a horror-comedy that finds Samara Weaving's bride trying to survive the world's worst wedding night. He's also contributed to TV shows such as "Castle Rock" and "Stan Against Evil." As for Vanderbilt, here's a screenwriter who's been pretty busy. He's penned "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Independence Day: Resurgence," "Murder Mystery," and perhaps David Fincher's finest film — "Zodiac."

On the producing side of things, Chad Villella of the Radio Silence collective (which also includes "Scream 6" directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) guided the upcoming slasher to the screen as an executive producer. In addition to other names, he was joined by Kevin Williamson — the man who brought Ghostface to life by penning the scripts for 1996's "Scream" and 1997's "Scream 2."

How are critics and audiences responding to Scream 6?

Most critics seem to have enjoyed "Scream 6." The film currently has a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 245 reviews, which is pretty solid. But what did they actually have to say about the sixth slasher?

Our own Dominic Griffin responded positively to the film and noted that it's indeed the most brutal entry in the franchise, writing, "'Scream VI' feels like the nastiest and most violent of the franchise thus far, which is saying something given the first dead body we saw on screen in this film had its intestines hanging out. But there's just something blunt and pugilistic about the killings here. There's a sense that anybody can die, even bystanders. It feels like the filmmakers are trying to capture the wanton malice that feels like it's lurking through society and tuck it all behind the Ghostface mask."

Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting concurred, saying, "This slasher sequel lets a ruthless Ghostface loose in the city, slicing up an intense, flawless entry that continues the streak of insightful introspection while escalating the thrills, kills, humor, and heart to a breathless degree." On the more negative side of things, David Sims of The Atlantic wasn't fond of the film, saying the franchise was losing some of its metatextual power. As he put it, "There just isn't enough juice behind the stagecraft. The Scream movies have thrived because they've always stayed one step ahead of their source material — but as the franchise grows more bloated, they risk becoming their own punch line."

As for audiences, they were all about "Scream 6." The film currently has a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 2,500+ ratings. It just goes to show that no matter where you run, Ghostface is going to follow, and people are going to love it.

How did Scream 6 perform at the box office?

"Scream" has always been a popular franchise, and "Scream 6" had the good fortune of both following the amazing fifth installment and starring Jenna Ortega, who'd rocketed to international fame just months before with Netflix's "Wednesday" series. Plus, horror is always super marketable, and with all those elements mixed together, "Scream 6" had the best opening weekend of any film in the franchise.

After debuting on March 10, 2023, "Scream 6" earned $44.5 million domestically and $22.6 million overseas, bringing things to a whopping $67.1 million total. In slicing and dicing its way to the #1 spot at the box office, "Scream 6" beat the #2 film, "Creed III" (still performing well from the previous weekend), and it absolutely carved up its big March 10 competitor — the dinosaur action flick "65," which bombed harder than an asteroid hitting the Earth.

What is Scream 6 rated?

"Scream 6" has been billed as the biggest, baddest, bloodiest of the "Scream" movies. Everybody's been saying this one is brutal and that this Ghostface is the cruelest of the bunch ... and the movie does not disappoint. As a result, "Scream 6" is rated R for "strong bloody violence and language throughout and brief drug use." While all the "Scream" movies are fun and feature plenty of comedy, don't go into this expecting something light and breezy. Ghostface always means business, especially this time around, and the violence here definitely lives up to the hype.

Everything to Know About 'Scream 6'

Scream (the 2022 movie, not to be confused with the original 1996 slasher) was such a successful requel — that is, part reboot-part sequel — that it has launched a whole new rechise? Franquel? Fans are still torn on the terminology, but either way, a sixth Scream movie is coming.

Scream 2022, which saw filmmakers Radio Silence take over for longtime franchise helmer Wes Craven , began a new chapter in Woodsboro's bloody saga, introducing a new generation of would-be Ghostface victims while bringing back legacy characters like Neve Campbell 's Sidney Prescott, David Arquette 's Officer Dewey Riley and Courteney Cox 's Gale Weathers.

Scream VI , which was announced within a month of the release of Scream , will keep the kills a-coming, arriving in theaters in 2023 and continuing the story of the new characters. (With one notable exception; more on that in a moment.) But who will be under the Ghostface mask this time?

Here is everything you need to know about Scream 6 .

What is 'Scream VI' about?

"The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter." Beyond that vague logline, plot details for Scream 6 have been kept tightly under wraps, although we know the latest film will be set in New York City and revolve around a new spate of Ghostface killings, of course!

Is there a trailer?

Yes, and you can watch it right here:

Who's returning for 'Scream VI'?

The aforementioned survivors are half-sisters Tara ( Jenna Ortega ) and Sam Carpenter ( Melissa Barrera ) and twins Chad ( Mason Gooding ) and Mindy Meeks-Martin ( Jasmin Savoy Brown ). Sam is the daughter of original Ghostface killer Billy Loomis, while the twins are niece and nephew to Jamie Kennedy's original Scream character, Randy Meeks.

Also returning is franchise mainstay Courteney Cox as the intrepid and iconic reporter Gale Weathers, with Hayden Panettiere reprising her role as Kirby Reed, a fan favorite from 2011's Scream 4 . (Kirby Reed was revealed to have survived the events of that film and will now be returning to the franchise.)

"I called them up myself and was like, 'So, you guys don't happen to want to bring Kirby back, do you?' I wanted to be in it that badly," Panettiere said on Good Morning America . "I don't think anyone's going to be disappointed."

Image

Wait, what about Sidney Prescott?

Neve Campbell will not be returning for Scream 6 , making this the first installment in the franchise to not feature the iconic final girl, Sidney Prescott. "Sadly, I won't be making the next Scream film," she confirmed in a statement.

"As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream ," Campbell said. "I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It's been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You've always been so incredibly supportive to me. I'm forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years."

For their part, Radio Silence told Total Film , "We are massive fans of Neve Campbell and what Sidney Prescott is in the Scream universe. Everything we did on Five was because we were fans of hers for years and years and years in the Scream legacy... We're very, very proud of the movie that we made, and the way that the entire cast bonded and came together on this new one and creating that thing and keeping that family element alive was very important to us."

Who's new to the franchise?

Samara Weaving , who starred in Radio Silence's 2019 hit horror flick, Ready or Not , will reunite with the filmmakers for an undisclosed role in Scream 6 , as will her Ready or Not co-star Henry Czerny.

Dermot Mulroney has also joined the cast, playing a police officer, alongside franchise newcomers Tony Revolori ( Spider-Man ), Jack Champion ( Avatar: The Way of Water ), Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, and Josh Segarra.

Who's behind the scenes?

The sixth movie maintains the core creative team from the fifth film, including directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and writers by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, with Scream creator and original scribe Kevin Williamson executive producing with Chad Villella of Radio Silence. Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group are behind Scream VI too.

Williamson recently praised the sixth installment as a "fresh reinvention," telling SyFy , "It doesn’t feel like 'Part 6'... I love, love, love, love it. I've watched the movie with a big smile on my face. I think it's everything and more. And going to New York was awesome. The movie feels new, it feels fresh, it feels like a new movie."

When does it come out?

Scream VI will open in theaters on March 31, 2023.

Scream 6 - Review

Say it with me: core four.

Amelia Emberwing

This is a spoiler-free review of Scream VI, which releases in theaters March 15, 2023.

“Rebootquels will continue until morale improves” would be a great opener to this review, but I regret to inform the naysayers that morale is quite high and RadioSilence’s continuation of the Scream franchise is still going strong. In fact, it’s even better than Scream (2022) — which I gave a 9/10 for breathing life back into the franchise — though, there is one slight pitfall that keeps the sixth entry from achieving the elusive 10. But, while it is the Sidney Prescott of it all, it’s not what you think.

Part of what made Scream (2022) so successful was that it took the old, the new, and built the perfect foundation for a story that could continue without its original final girl (a task many horror franchises have tried and mostly failed ). Scream 6 capitalizes on that, focusing on the return of Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and fan-favorite Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) as the legacies, and letting the “new” cast do its thing. The problem isn’t the absence of Neve Campbell’s Sidney, though. It’s that said absence is explained in a throwaway line that’s about as well delivered as it was written. Writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick nail it when it comes to everything else in this new chapter, but that particular explanation was handled about as well as Neve’s contract negotiations .

Sid’s absence does play into the overall theme of the film, though. Scream has always been about subverting horror tropes and playing in a space that both mocks and reveres its genre in equal measure. That continues in Scream 6, but this time it’s not about tackling horror as a whole. This time it’s full meta, and the butt of the joke is Scream itself. You’ll see plenty of shoutouts to your horror favorites both old and new sprinkled throughout the movie (you already saw plenty of them in the trailer alone), and none of the self-exploration feels over-the-top or like it’s making a mockery of Wes Craven’s legacy. Instead, it’s simply having a laugh at the tropes that the franchise itself has helped create in its own right after nearly 30 years and six entries. Some of the rules apply, but others? Others no longer matter at all. And are you going to have a blast learning which rule fits where.

The Core Four™ take more of a beating than the original three ever did, and there's never any real way of knowing who will manage to limp their way to the closing credits.

Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) delivers her now customary monologue to give you a few hints on those rules. It’s a little redundant, mirroring Scream (2022) more than any other moment in the new film, but effective all the same. We’re not going to get into the nitty gritty of that monologue, but one thing the young Meeks-Martin highlights is that the gore must be amplified in a rebootquels’ sequel, and boy is it ever! The hits (stabs) just keep on coming, and no one is safe. The Core Four™ take more of a beating than the original three ever did, and there’s never any real way of knowing who will manage to limp their way to the closing credits.

The heart and soul of Scream 6 is that aforementioned Core Four (made up of the Meeks-Martin twins and the Carpenter sisters). This chapter very intentionally ditches the standard Scream trope of splitting up its protagonists between movies to have them come together at the end of the first act and instead focuses on a story that keeps the survivors connected the whole time. This doesn’t just lead to you caring more about the main characters, but the people they love as well. Mindy’s only known her girlfriend Anika (Devyn Nekoda) for six months, but you’re concerned about her safety because you’re worried about a member of the Core Four’s wellbeing. The same can be said for Danny (Josh Segarra), Quinn (Liana Liberto) and Ethan (Jack Champion), but you’ll have to check out the movie to learn more about their connections to our leads!

Scream 6 delivers with its secondary characters more than any franchise entry before it, as a matter of fact. And while some of the praise belongs to the closeness the writers give us to the Core Four, a not insignificant amount of the credit needs to go to the aforementioned actors. We’ve always loved Sid, Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale, but gone are the Mickeys (Timothy Olyphant) and Dereks (Jerry O’Connell) of Scream 2. It’d be a joy to see any of these players show their faces again in Scream 7, even if some are, well… quite dead.

While the character-driven story of Scream 6 is the primary reason for its success, it’s far from the only one. Some of the set pieces in this chapter will take your breath away, whether it’s the immaculate representation of an unbearably claustrophobic subway car or the jarring illustration of a person’s obsession in the Stab trophy room. Hell, even the confined space of Sam and Tara’s (Jenna Ortega) cramped apartment will get you in the New York state of mind (even if the film was shot in Montreal). Brett Jutkiewicz’s cinematography doesn’t disappoint, either. There are several scenes in the third act that marry the beautiful and the macabre in very exciting ways. This is especially true of the trophy room. Just the gift that keeps on giving, that!

The Verdict

Emotions and brutality are at an all-time high in Scream 6, setting it up to be the best sequel in the franchise yet. Though it does ultimately fumble the reason for Sidney Prescott’s absence, RadioSilence has officially proven that there’s a future for the franchise with or without its original final girl by giving us strong connections to the new Core Four.

Scream 6 officially happening, starts filming this summer.

Paramount and Spyglass Media are officially moving forward with Scream 6 and is planning to begin filming the horror sequel this summer.

Paramount and Spyglass Media are officially moving forward with Scream 6 and is planning to begin filming the horror sequel this summer. The slasher franchise first launched in 1996 with the Wes Craven-helmed eponymous film centered on Sidney Prescott in the small California town of Woodsboro as she is targeted by an unknown assailant wearing a Ghostface costume.  Scream 's success would spawn a franchise of four sequels and a TV series on MTV, which featured no ties to the stories of the movies.

The latest installment, simply entitled  Scream , picked up a decade after the fourth film as Woodsboro comes under attack from a new person wearing the Ghostface costume and primarily targeting Sam Carpenter, a woman with ties to the town's deadly past. The renewed killings capture the attention of original protagonists, David Arquette's Dewey Riley, Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers and Neve Campbell's Sidney, bringing them all back in an effort to put the attacks to a stop for good. The new  Scream , hailing from  Ready or Not  group Radio Silence , has been a critical and commercial success since its release in January and it appears to only just be the start.

Less than a month after hitting theaters, Paramount  and  Spyglass  have announced that  Scream 6  is officially happening. The new installment will once again be helmed by Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett on a script from returning duo James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick with production slated to begin this summer. Paramount and Spyglass wrote about the announcement in the following joint statement:

“We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family."

Long before the film hits theaters, the new  Scream  had been frequently described by the creatives behind it as a relaunching of the beloved slasher franchise rather than strictly a sequel or reboot. In the lead up to the film's release, many of both the new and returning stars had expressed their excitement to not only return for the fifth outing but also their interest in coming back for more, with Neve Campbell confirming she'd come back if the script and story interested her. Given her having been impressed by Radio Silence with their first go in the franchise, the door would appear to be very open for more Sidney Prescott in the near future.

That being said, while the writers noted they didn't set a plan for sequels to the new film, the latest chapter in the franchise also carved a path forward with its new characters for  Scream 6 . Given the film's critical and financial success, having outgrossed  Scream 4 's with over $107 million in less than a month since hitting theaters, it makes sense Paramount and Spyglass are looking to capitalize on this renewed interest in the series with another installment, though the planned summer shoot schedule does point towards these plans having been in the works prior to the film's release. Audiences can catch up on or revisit the latest  Scream  in theaters now.

Scream 6 VI

The sixth time may be the charm: “ Scream VI” is heading toward what could be a franchise-high opening at the box office this weekend. The Paramount and Spyglass Media slasher movie made $5.7 million at the domestic box office in Thursday previews. It’s expanding from 3,125 domestic theaters to 3,675 on Friday.

“ Scream VI ” is looking to take the crown from its earlier predecessor with an estimated debut between $35 million to $40 million this weekend. The sixth installment brings back the surviving stars from last year’s movie, including Jenna Ortega , Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown, plus Courteney Cox, who plays the longstanding “Scream” star Gale Weathers. “Scream VI” relocates the Ghostface murders from Woodsboro, Calif., to New York City, with a new cast of college-aged characters trying their best to not be stabbed repeatedly by the masked killer.

Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin return from 2022’s “Scream” to direct the latest installment, as do writers Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt. Last year’s horror ended its box office run with $81 million domestically and $137 million worldwide, all from a $25 million budget. “Scream VI” bumped up its price tag to $33 million, which, combined with positive reviews and clever, viral marketing, could bode well for the sequel.

Also staying in the box office ring this weekend is Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III,” which dominated last week with a franchise-record $58 million launch. Also premiering this weekend are Adam Driver’s sci-fi, dinosaur action movie “65,” which earned $1.225 million in previews, and Woody Harrelson’s basketball comedy “Champions.”
